Reviews (page 6 of 7)
I actually enjoyed the overall sound, groove and harmonies. Sort of mix of reggae and rap. My issue is the lyrics. Really liked "Hand on the Pump", but the excessive use of the N*** word and the topic (killing) are really off-putting. Lead singer's (B-Real) voice is high, almost nasally, but I found it a great sound. Another singer (Sen Dog??) has a low rap sound, and they play off each other nicely. Fav song is "Latin Lingo". Has a great base line and the rap is mesmerizing. Added to personally library !
I recognize Cypress Hill’s unique style. The samples are on point as is B-Real’s nasally voice. The music holds up. The lyrics are another thing.
Would give it a 3.5
This is the funky Cypress Hill shit.
Identifying Cypress Hill : It’s the album Cypress Hill by the band Cypress Hill
Captures the rap scene right as it is transitioning from "I went to the hat store and I bought myself a hat" and "I am going to fucking shoot you in the fucking face". I think I prefer the Rage Against the Machine version of Kill a Man, but I respect the original and I am glad to have heard it. I love that 99% of rappers are, at their heart, real big goof balls. It's a genre that is meant to be playful and silly, and is at its best when it is done so.
Has a sound somewhat similar to Public Enemy from the same era, but lyrically more focused on hardcore street life than political awareness. They definitely have unique voices and flows. But where they shine, in my opinion, is when they incorporate Latin percussion and Spanish lyrics. Ultimately, I find the gangster rap thing kind of exhausting over the course of an album though.
Oof, usage of gay slurs has not aged "Pigs" well. "How I Could Just Kill a Man" is pretty iconic though. Interesting some of the lyrics are very close to some Rage Against the Machine's later works, so clearly they were influenced (not to mention they toured together). Some of the lyrics are so silly though, "Scooby Doo ya'll" made me laugh out loud. It's okay, I see the influence but for me the execution isn't my hip-hop style.
some slick production but the messaging is off-point
I don't really care for CH's jokey-style of hip hop but that's just me. I can appreciate their work though. 6/10.
Hip-hop. Ni fu ni fa.
Hip hop con ritmo. Me ha gustado.
It's okay
Se oli ihan toinen levy jota soittamalla kulutettiin aikoinaan puhki, mutta ihan hauskaa menoa tässäkin on.
Ehtaa Cypressiä, varma kolmonen
Liked it. I never paid much attention to Hip Hop in the 90s, now I'm liking it and this had it's catchy moments.
I don't have much to say. A lot of this late 80s/early 90s hip hop sounds very similar to me. Cancel me if you must. 3/5
Not bad, not great
Nice album rap. Mais un peu redindant. Jaime quajd meme. 3.5
I’m in no position to judge this genre, but I will say that it’s “fun” to listen to (which, I know, is not the intent). Cypress Hill is definitely unique in this space. They developed their own sound, and I can appreciate that. It grinds on my after a while, though.
A Tribe Called Quest with more aggro lyrics and production. lots of creativity here but it's a challenging listen overall
Some decent hip hop, even if some of the tracks get a bit samey
Pretty classic, not as good as Black Sunday. Solid but not their big hits in my mind.
Está bien pero no es lo mio...
really angry until they took to the mary jane, the old wacky baccy, da 'erb, reefer, the doobies. once that happened the album was a lot less about killing people and hating on pigs and just better in general.
Well better than Kanye West. That was a tough two days listening to that ass sandwich. That's all I have to say.
fun
3/5
Ikke lige min favorit type hiphop. Men flere gode beats og en fed start. Kvaliteten er høj men sangerens stemme irritere mig
El flow tan característic i associat a la banda ja començava aquí. El hit incontestable és 'How I Could Just Kill a Man', però la resta està a un bon nivell, amb la vena llatina més pronunciada que a treballs posteriors i la compenetració entre B-Real i Sen Dog ja liderant les composicions del grup
I didn't really like this album - not my kind of music I guess. They all sounded very similar to me. But these songs are very 90s which is nostalgic.
Pretty good in places, esp. the samples. Mixed well, so sounds good for '91. But I found it rather tiring to listen to overall.
Regarding B-Real’s choice of singing style, he “barely liked it,” but “learn to like it.” I haven’t.
Bit of fun.
You know what you're gonna get with Cypress Hill. Classic Gangsta Rap, with lots of weed and guns. There's definitely some nostalgia factor going back in high school when you could build your personality around smoking weed. Definitely outgrown these kinds of lyrics/themes these days but I'll give it points since I used to love some of the tunes on here. I bet they'd sound really good backed by the London Symphony Orchestra, possibly while high.
Good album, not great
He escuchado otros discos de Cypress Hill que están mejores, pero si entiendo que éste esté dentro del listado porque marca el estilo del grupo
Good for certain situations, wouldn't listen regularly
Groovy beats. All the gun and violence imagery was a bit too much for my taste but I digged the rap flow. Light another is a favourite.
For an early 90s rap album Cypress Hill made something unique. Some of the songs are heavily weed based but that’s what they’re known for. The album is good but not as good as Black Sunday. 6.4/10
Pretty good old days.
Better than you think
First time listening: 12/16 songs liked It's quite underrated for sure, as most definitive hip-hop albums are rooted amongst African-Americans. This stamps "Latino" all over the album. Wacky, ear-tickling samples, with the weird voicing of B-real, make for a classic album. 3 songs saved.
I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Cypress Hill kind of became a one trick pony. But there is some quality production on this project. Definitely some early 90s cruisin music.
disco interesante, una cancion en español que me sorprendio. sonaba mucho a molotov
Not my cup of tea but can see why it is a clarion call to those who get it
If I was 15 it may have been a 5, as it is was a good hip hop album, nothing more
Buenos ritmos. Funky divertido. Percusión a tope.
Buuuuaaahahhh
3.75 on this blast from the past
bueno
Eh, gansta rap isn't really my thing. Cypress Hill carved out an undeniably iconic sound for themselves - you can tell a Cypress Hill track within seconds. Fave track... one of the ones with more Spanish, I guess? "Latin Lingo" or "Tres Equis"
Good ‘ol cypress hill
So I generally kind of hate 80s-90s hip hop because it's kind of corny and lame and super dated sounding. But this album is pretty tight so far. They made some pretty iconic beats
Hard to give a rating. It's not a bad album by any stretch but after a while it becomes hard to distinguish between songs. Lyrically, its tight and there are some solid grooves they rap over but there are definitely better rap and hip hop albums out there.
Classic. Great study album
3.5| Wasup Hommies!!! saquen la clika CH is in la casa. Mucho funk en sus mezclas junto con las rimas te llevan en un trip (musical no fumón) por los 70's-80's No creo que sea su mejor disco pero si creo que es el disco que dió pie a muchas bandas latinas para explorar el rap.
3.5 | ¿Eres tú Fermin IV, Huidos o Emmanuel Horvilleur?
I mean, you already know what this album sounds like. Cypress Hill
3.75 great album
a number of great cypress hill songs on this album. Including pigs and how I could just kill a man.
good album, not their best.
not my favorite album from them but not bad
Funky shit
I struggle with Cypress Hill. I lost a few brain cells listening to this knuckle dragging caricature of a rap album. There’s a few consecutive tracks in the middle section of the album that are pretty good with some good beats, but on the whole it’s reasonably uninspired. B Real also sounds ridiculous
Classic sound. Never went out of my way to listen to them before, but I’ve definitely heard some of those songs played throughout my life. A bit repetitive.
Not what I usually listen to, but I'd give it another try. I liked the use of instrumentation alongside the rap!
1991. Key Songs: Pigs, How Could I Just Kill a Man
didn't fully listen, kinda goes tho
The single tracks are o.k. but a whole album of any kind of hip-hop is slightly too much for me.
Struggled with this one. There’s some decent stuff tucked in here but they will have to be a playlist group for me. One song every once in a while on a playlist, not 45 minutes straight.
i love the beats, love the samples - but man that vocal delivery has always been so damn grating to me.
pas assez mélodique pour moi
I just found it kind of annoying honestly
Spooky vibes, and honestly mad weird.
This was not good
nicht so packend.
not my cup of tea tbh 2
They are on the upper end of enjoyment in terms of 90s hip hop albums. The compositions by DJ Muggz sound so unabashedly from its era which make this album even more so relevant. Overall, a fun and interesting listen but far from their third, 'Temples of Boom'. 7/10 [SWAP]
hip-hop selection on this list largely canonical and stellar but i find this one pretty annoying, sorry :(
Real Estate was a vibe
Better than some in this genre, but still not my favorite genre.
Did not like. Annoying voice, lyrics were just mid, production was fine at best. Felt a lot longer than the 46 minute runtime.
meh. it was better than I expected though
Not for me.
I really enjoy the sound Cypress Hill creates on this album through some creative mixing and sampling. I only wish the lyrics were as creative. It’s really all about smoking weed and shooting people and even to that end isn’t written in a way that’s especially engaging or surprising.

How I Could Just Kill a Man Hand on the Pump
292/1089 this was a fun and interesting enough listen as part of this project but none of it stood out to me as something i need to revisit 24/100
I guess this is a hood classic but I found it pretty grating.
nostalgic, i just don't think it aged that well or I would listen to it if I hadn't played tony hawk for my whole life
Hip-Hop
Standouts How I Could Just Kill a Man
More uninspiring hip hop improved with the occasional horn and strings.
It's a no from me
kinda boring. Some interesting sounds.
High school era, hits from the bong …could of waited another 30 yrs to revisit this effort
I feel bad because I think my average rating for hip hop is pretty low compared to how I think I enjoy the genre. But that's a factor of this list having a lot of old-school hip hop prior to gangsta rap (Which is about when I started enjoying hip hop with the more intricate and complex rhyme schemes that flow better). And unfortunately, this is still that old-school flow with the more sparse, early 90's sound. So yeah, just not really doing much for me.
Another boom bap album, but this time it's a group of Latin Americans, which I only figured out upon hearing the song "Latin lingo." Goes to show how closely I was listening.. that might be my favorite song on the album; the songs with bilingual bars were pretty cool. It's still really hard to rate albums like this because the style of music is characterized by having minimal instrumentals to make room for the spoken word, so to speak. But like ray, I also don't internalize lyrics very much, nor do I look for them as the main point of appeal in music. The instrumentals, sampling, and flows are all funky and rhythmically interesting, but that's about all that I can say. All the music from this genre sounds the same because it's supposed to. I think rap music reached its peak after the 21st-century, when an artist started using more musical elements. Some of the samples on this album made me think how it's cool that you can loop sounds from daily life and create a rhythm from that.
I really did not like the first 4 tracks, the . . . violent nihilism? Any excuse I can think of for those tracks doesn't fly, and most of the explanations I can think of are cynical and self-serving and irresponsible. Ok, after that -- a number of the tracks sound pretty cool; the music/rhythm, I mean - the rapping is kind of annoying (to me); I don't even know what they're saying, half the time, but it SOUNDS like obnoxious braggadoccio, which really rubs me the wrong way. Some of the sound collages and beats and whatnot are pretty cool. So, like 3 or 4 (lean toward a 4) for that part, but 1 or 2 (lean toward a 1) for the "vocals" (and the lyrics). But, overall 2 or 3. I think I dislike the vocals (delivery, and lyrics, and nihilism posing as cool) so much that I'll give it a 2 overall. But I did like the beats and the samples and the bass and the whatnot -- basically, everything except the vocals.
This sounds like an uninspired knockoff of Insane Clown Posse.
Liked the first song, but flow and sound aren't really my thing
The beats are OK, if a little eccentric (and a touch annoying), but not much else is good to me.
I actually liked Black Sunday back in the day when they were blowing up, listening to this now, not so much. The nasal vocals are seriously irritating and it’s all rather teenage boy style annoying. Yep, I’ve grown out of this one
Too repetitive. Not for me
Major Album that I never got into
2 notes into the first track and there was no denying it was Cypress Hill. I appreciate their sound but it never was high on my list of bands to listen to.
Not the best hip hop project.
Not a fan.
I means it’s ok not my favorite, I feel like they were speaking gibberish the whole time
2.25 - I’m more familiar with subsequent albums. This holds up better than Run DMC, but I was a bit disappointed in this.
Not bad but kinda boring
Eh.
Sound very Cypress Hill, oh wait it is. The fact that I haven't heard this album but it was the same music I have heard before makes me think that the albums are just the same music.
I found myself absent mindedly tapping along with the beat occasionally and would start paying attention. Upon which I would realise that the current section was being repeated with no variation for the next 2 minutes. I have concluded that my ADHD stops me from enjoying hip hop. I struggle to appreciate the talent in putting together a bar of stuff that sounds alright and then selecting it and pressing CTRL+C -> CTRL+VVVVVV. Other than that I am not interested in the album. I decided for one song to try to listen to the lyrics to figure out if it was at least lyrically interesting, after about a minute of trying I couldn't make out a single word and gave up. Low 2 At least it was short.
Unfortunately, so much of this music sounds the same and I really could do without all the foul language, but then it wouldn't be culturally accurate, would it? I thought the song "Hand On The Pump" had the same three notes that the song, "Duke of Earl"' has, and every time I heard those three notes the words, 'Duke of Earl' went through my head and every time I heard those three notes, I was disappointed as it wasn't the song, "Duke Of Earl" and I wondered if there were any piracy issues. Mostly, I was just glad when the album was over, and I hoped there would be a little more time before another hip-hop album shows up in the rotation. I did like the way that "Tres Equis" started out with the single horn and then joined by other instruments, so best song for me was "Tres Equis" which the language was Spanish, so I didn't understand what the words were except for a few like calenti which means hot and the song title "Three X's"
Very easy to see how this inspired guys like Eminem, which was cool. However, this album wasn't really for me, and I don't think I could see myself listening to them again.
Garbage. Reminds me of Insane Clown Posse. I think I was a bit too harsh on this one. Bumping to a 2.
I figured I would be down with this album. After the first 3 songs I was tired of it. Same sound, same themes.
Another rap album that I ultimately just find quite boring. Some good songs that I may add to a playlist but won’t listen to album again
no estoy para rap hoy
Not really for me
This felt generic by my modern standards. Maybe it was more important when it was first released; I do like some of the messaging, too. But I disliked more than I liked.
Okay, but far from great. There are much better early 90s hip hop groups.
Not the worst rap/hip-hop, but not great. I’m happy I don’t have to listen to this again. 2/5
noioso
Not my Taste
tried to give this an honest listen despite me not being a fan of cypress hill. while it has some unique aspects, it’s just not my vibe.
I don't really listen to that much hip hop, so I didn't really know what to expect. Some of the songs were really catchy, although I probably wouldn't listen to the album again. I just couldn't get into it. That being said I enjoyed the song Light Another a lot.
I liked the start of this but got a bit repetitive as it went on. Glad to have heard it but not one for keeping around.
I recognize its cultural relevance, but it never really clicked for me.
not bad. just not my thing. I can appreciate the art though, I know it's good because I can sit through it. But I wouldn't listen again.
Nah
Kinda liked it when it came out but not my favourite type of hip hop. Might listen to a couple of tracks now and again but it's not an all time great, even for hip hop.
10 albums to go. This is fine for what it is, some funk and groove in the production but it doesn’t give me anything else. I’m not a fan generally of boast rap or songs that are wholly about drugs - so this isn’t a great combo for me.
Not a fan. I don’t know if it’s his voice or the constant scratching like they just discovered they could do it.
Het was niet zo slecht maarja hip hop
Dwa odsłuchy. Nadal nie czuję tej muzyki.
I'd sort of forgotten about Cypress Hill. When Black Sunday came out in '93 they were pretty much inescapable - they seemed to me to be at the more tolerable end of the genre and I would go so far as to say I quite liked that record once I got past the whiny vocal delivery. I'd never heard this record before but I do quite like their sound, even if the words are a bit shooty for my tastes. As with pretty much every record I've ever heard in this genre, I can't relate to a single word of it, but I guess I don't need to. It also starts to sounds very samey after a while - when it finished playing, I couldn't really remember any of it, and I was left with no real desire to remind myself.
Seem to repeat myself about hip hop generally. My knowledge of it is low. My enjoyment of it very mixed. The hypermasculinity and misogyny of so much of it seems to be mercifully absent from Cypress Hill, or did I just switch off as I wasn't very interested in it? Think they smoke a lot.... this could take things either way... ??
cool production and creative sampling, but it doesn’t blow me away. b-real’s voice is a bit annoying, and stops me from fully immersing myself in the album. not bad, but doesn’t do much to set itself apart from other hip-hop albums of the early 90s. lacking the charisma of the beastie boys, timelessness of atcq, and grit of wu tang clan. just a meh hip-hop record.
I think I prefer it when my hip-hop is Conscious rather than Stoner.
5/10 - some fun beats but generally not my thing
it was ok, good start the rest however was not for me.
It had a good start and I was hopeful that the beat would keep up but it fell away for me
Not my speed
Meh, I really didn’t care for this one much.
I really admire the ability that this band has to release a 15+ song album where all of them sound exactly the same.
Greit nok, ganske samey hele albumet men liker sounden
Didn't mind Some later tracks but not a fan of this.
This doesn't reach me at all. The lyrics are clever but, unfortunately, I can't relate. The music is monotonous, overly simple, boring. I'm the wrong audience for this.
Good shit, but their tracks/samples are pretty damn repetitive and I don’t see myself going back for more than a few songs.
*copy / paste en text woni schriibe dasi kei fan vo old school hiphop bin*
Cypress hill scho vill erinnerige Au am konzert innsins im mexicano gsi. Legend. Aber sie hend na besseri albe, woni na chönt lose. Das leider too early hiphop
How I (wish I) could just skip a track
Very reminiscent of Beastie Boys (in that one member sounds like they belong on The Muppets) and Public Enemy (the production). They can write a hook, which is fun. But they can also write a super annoying backing track (see: Hand on the Pump, Psycobetabuckdown), which looking back is a very early-90s hip-hop Thing To Do. Its fine - isn't my style - kind of annoying. TWO STARS
Sin letras se queda en nada. Aburrido
Break it up, Cypress Hill.
Phunky. Liked some of it. Gets repetitive but could keep you poppin if it was in the background. Just not loving some of the message.
I know of Cypress Hill, but the only song of theirs I know is "Insane in the Brain." Well, you know what, maybe I know "How I Could Just Kill a Man" too, but I'll wait until I listen to the album to find out for sure. I think I have a decent idea of what to expect from this album's sound, and I'm curious to see how I'll feel about this. I didn't really care for this self-titled debut from Cypress Hill. It wasn't a bad album, but my dislike for it was just a matter of personal preference. This album had a unique sound, with good samples, interesting Latin influences, and some funny lyrics. But for the most part, this album just wasn't interesting to me musically. I didn't care for the stripped down production style, with the static and how the album was mixed, and the overall sound got a bit repetitive as the album went on. Again, it's just my personal taste that I didn't care for those production choices, and that's something that's held true for me with most of the west coast hip-hop albums I've reviewed. But there were some things that did work for me. I know it's a small detail, but I really liked those hand claps on "Light Another." That sort of punchier sound on the beat worked really well for me, and I don't know why Cypress Hill didn't use that sort of sound more often. Also, I liked the more funk reliant sound on "Real Estate," "Psychobetabuckdown," and "Something for the Blunted." Those songs were easily the best on the album, and I would have loved to hear more funk samples utilized like that on this album. Cypress Hill's debut is impactful, but it's just not my style.
Meh
Not even remotely my kind of thing - and yet - still better than so much of this list.
90s hip hop. Was okay, but nothing impressive. But it did not seem to be misogynistic like the rest of hip hop at the time
English is not my native language - I can hardly understand rap lyrics. So the voices, the beats, the samples need to carry me through the album - with enough variety since obviously there are no melodies. The album started strong (that voice! isn't that from "insane in the main brain?") but then got boring quickly, and the past 30 minutes was a chore. Would not want to listen to this again.
Very short loops, production has too strong emphasis on drums and vocals, a funny voice that isn't funny. It's like listening to the same song over and over. And not even a good one.
I think this is likely the sort of album that inspired loads of others, you can definitely hear where some of the besties boys may have got their sound from. It's all fine, I just got a bit bored after a while. The backing tracks were good and aggressive, just not really for me. I'm not exactly their target audience though.

Minimamente legal, eu daria 2,5 estrelas.
2 stars I’m sure it sounded good at the time. And it’s not bad. But it all starts to sound the same and just does not have the bandwidth to take up a whole album. Dated and kind of cheesy sounding now.
De har det sjovere mig. Jeg fik hvad jeg forventede.
This isn't bad, but I don't want to listen to it anymore.
92/1001 Cypress Hill - s/t Heard before? ❎ Revisit? ❎ 46 minutes of essentially the same sounding beats and flow just became a somewhat frustrating listen. I honestly don't like the flow either. The only bit of real difference came in the extremely short penultimate song and the final track, where they embrace more of a jazz and funk sounding backgrounds. Basically gangsta rap with the addition of lyrics about weed. Tiresome.
I'd love to visit the year of my birth as a thirtysomething. This came out just a couple weeks after I was born. Delighted to learn the producer was an Italian American born in Queens, NY. And the two rappers are of Afro-Cuban descent. "The Phuncky Feel One" is the standout track but I don't have much to say about it or any of the other tracks as I didn't try to follow the lyrics. The beats are fine but I need some really special melodies in rap to draw me in. Excellent design on the album cover.
Not for me.
no me gusta
Definitely some bangers and some nostalgic tracks on this one but Cypress Hill just doesn't hit for me anymore. Not adding this one to my Library.
Well, it's Cypress Hill. I appreciate the album for what it is, stoner style rap, with just a hint of funk. The beat is relentless and the lyrics are "lighter" and fun. Certainly not in my wheelhouse, but ok nevertheless.
I guess it's good in its genre, I liked some of the sampling and Latin flavour, but there's very little rap I can engage with and I was relieved to get to the end.
2-3
Listening to this album was like oh hey! it’s Cypress Hill ! To quickly oh hey… it’s cypress hill…. They’re great for a mixed tape but just not on their own.
Some fantastic beats and great trumpets are featured in this album to create some really catchy tunes, showing the quality CH can achieve But the lyrical focus on gun violence (Kill a Man / Hole in the Head), drug culture and disposable attitude towards women is really not my thing, then or now
Another album that is completely out of the music that I'm comfortable with. I understood about 10% of the lyrics, but I still understood the overall story of the album. It's weird how the whole album works so well together. That said, this album was not made for me. I would not choose to listen to this again. As someone who doesn't listen to hip hop, I noticed there were elements of rap, punk, and reggaeton in here. I liked the album more than I thought I would, if that counts for anything. The first track, "pigs", caught me off guard. As someone who works in a law enforcement adjacent career, I immediately recognized it. I don't necessarily sympathize with anything said in the song, but it drew me in. I was excited to hear the rest of the album. I'm torn on how to score this. I can tell it's a great album, and I enjoyed listening to it, but I also didn't like it. Trying to decide a score, I can see either a 2 or 3. I'll see how I'm feeling when I rate it tomorrow.
🐣🤷🏻♂️
They all start like Insane in the Membrane will kick in, even When the Sh** Goes Down, but wrong album. Mah. Funky Hip Hop, but all sounds the same.
Far too long. Great production at parts, specifically the first 1/4
Most of the songs sound pretty similar. Gangsta rap is silly.
Kind of unpleasant and boring, but somehow grew on me a little bit by the second listen.
It’s ok but maybe not for me. Decent background music while cooking but I lost interest pretty fast, especially after “How I Could Just Kill a Man,” which is the big hit from this record, but I didn’t totally care for.
It was fine. It used some good samples. I didn’t know any songs. The only Cypress Hill song I know is Insane in the Membrane which wasn’t on this album.
Just not my genre
Ok I guess. Got annoying after a while.
The beat carried most of this album, as the lyricism was obscene. Although it did have its moments and was a fun look into old hip-hop. You can clearly tell that Cypress Hill had a lot of fun making this. Especially the song about lighting another one up. Or the interlude of just smoking a blunt. Overall it was a solid 2.5 in my eyes. As i dont really listen to that kind of hip-hop. But not bad for a first listen to that kind of space.
Not my genre.
I don't like the vocal delivery from b-real which really knocked the rating down. Won't listen again
It was pretty good, not really my thing though. I wouldn't mind hearing a song or two now and then but an entire album was a bit much
2.5 stars This didn’t grab me. A while back we reviewed Wu-Tang’s debut. I’m probably not supposed to compare East Coast vs West Coast but the two albums are from the same era and both very influential. Wu-Tang’s storytelling, lyricism, and sampling was consistently engaging. I found Cypress Hill kind of boring, but the album got more interesting as it went on.
For better and for worse, this is some Funky Cypress Hill shit. Going into this, I knew a little bit of Cypress Hill... Insane in the Brain and Hits from the Bong (sadly neither of these songs are on this album). The tracks on this album felt like less catchy versions of those songs. The best part of this album is definitely the funk and soul sampling. Now this is super common, but I imagine in 91 this was mind blowing. I assume this album influenced a lot of people (jump around by house of pain definitely rips off this sound). The beats on this album still hold up though. Very cool. A lot of great guitar parts sampled and weaved into the beats. A lot of great samples I'm surprised they were able to get cleared. Unfortunately, the rap style is just not for me. The flows are very monotonous and the one guy is very nasally (I think this rapper was a big influence on Danny Brown, who I also have mixed feelings about). I kind of wish another rapper could have a shot at these beats. I think there's a much better album in here with a better vocalist. The beats feel like there is some variety, but the rapping is so same-y across the tracks that it gives the whole album this repetitive vibe. It's just a wall of funk rap. I vaguely recall it improving near the end but I can't say for sure. On the plus side, there were no dated cringey skits. I feel like that's always a risk with old rap albums. So good for them. O and one more complaint... i'm not a fan of the album cover. But rap album covers from this time are normally pretty rough. (I just flicked through the rest of their album covers... and this actually might be one of the best ones. Yikes.)
En aktiivisesti vihaa mutta enpä tykkääkään. Aika tylsä mut rytmikäs.
This was a tough listen. I get this is probably some fundamental 90s rap album but I just did not enjoy this. Probably has something to do with dropping the f slur not even a minute into the album. I know it was different times but idk it just turns me off. The album as a whole though was just really not enjoyable either. It sounded mostly monotonous to me and I couldn’t wait for it to be over. I’m honestly on the verge of giving a 1 out to this album but I think I’ll be merciful today.
# 519 : Cypress Hill Well, I can listen to it, but its not real exciting. A lot of repetition, kind of made it boring. Nothing stood out and I know why I don't choose Hip Hop when I am jamming tunes LOL. If I had to pick a track : PSYCOBETABUCKDOWN Listened : 08/07/2025
Kinda repetitive but in a good way. Nothing wrong with similar sounding bangers. Emphasis on the repetitive part. Can get pretty tiring. Highlights: Pigs, Light Another, Latin Lingo is pretty solid,
One of the worst hip hop albums I’ve heard in the list so far. Just feels cheesy and generic compared to other stuff I’ve heard. It’s not bad just basic.
Get high or shoot people, but trying to rap about both is confusing (and actually kind of dull).
Не зацепило.
Not my style.
This isn't bad really, but it's not something I can see myself listening to. I'm not a stoner. I like Real Estate though.
Gar nicht mein Fall
People put this on and thought they were cool?
I know that this is a critically acclaimed hip-hop album, but something about it was niggling me and it finally struck me on the third track, Hand on the Pump. It opens with a sample of Duke of Earl by Gene Chandler, and I realised that I would much rather be listening to the original. They’ve just taken a classic intro to a song and chopped it up, without adding anything new or it having any relevance to their track. I have nothing against sampling per se, but it needs to have a reason for being rather than artists acting like a kid in a candy store grabbing everything in site.
Now I know why they ordered the London symphony… to get on this list.
technically impressive within the genre, but not something i'll ever reach for
a whole album of having insane in the brain in my head and it's not on here? fucked up enjoyed this fine but this guy's delivery was SO samey, really started to grate on my by the end
Decent
Big letdown, I thought I’d like this one
Great for Danny Brown fans who wish he would put out an album rapping over throwaway De La Soul beats
Random critique beyond this being not a great album: it felt like they were saying "Cypress Hill" way too many times per song. I know it's not uncommon for rap groups to say their name in the songs, but it felt like it was excessive in this album.
Distinct style, cool beats, just hip hop is too monotonous for me
No stand outs, won't listen again.
This era of rap seems to have become particularly dated. I personally don't care for the sound, although I didn't start listening to rap until the 2010's.
I can't listen to this - boring, annoying, terrible.
Not bad, not really hitting in 2025 though.
4/10.Ill be honest I just didn't care that much for this, for starters I've noticed this list seems obsessed with debut albums rather than an artists more popular stuff. All in all this is probably worse than Ice Cube (although a bit less misogynist, however there was quite a jarring use of a slur in the first track). Maybe it's a genre that I just don't quite get as I'm pretty far removed for the culture and it's not even my country. I think the beats were decent but still exactly what I'd expect and nothing really caught me off guard. I think I tuned out for the most of it tbh so I can't rate it too high.
Not in my top 1001 albums
Pigs // 2.5/5
Cops are pigs, weed is awesome, violence is cool. That's the album. It's repetitive and gets pretty boring by the end.
It didn’t start off great but it was intriguing to say the least. Truthfully there was nothing particularly special or gravitating and relatively mid.
The repetition is exhausting. The samey-ness quickly made me lose interest in even trying to make it through a complete song. I've heard worse rap albums but I did not enjoy this.
Based on this album I think the Insane Clown Posse was heavily influenced by Cypress Hill and that’s not a compliment.
I tried to get into this and it was fun in parts but over the course of the day the repetetivness of the songs dragged for me
I'm a big hiphop fan but the truth is this music hasn't aged that good to be honest, it just sounds old? I don't know, but it's just not anything that will "stick", however it is not terrible.
This album was odd. I really liked the beats and rhythms. I enjoyed this album. But there wasn't much here that stood out to me. I enjoyed the album, but outside of a couple songs, I don't think I would return to anything here. But the vibe of it was fun Liked Songs: "Pigs" , "The Phuncky Feel One" , "Real Estate"
It was just ok. Nothing really grabbed me and by the end I was in no rush to listen again.
Rap and hippity-hop are never going to be my tempo, but this is not over long, and some of the samples are enjoyable. Still never going to listen to it again, though.
tava esperando um trem completamente diferente achei as beats fracas
I just don’t love the vocals
I wish I could give this 2.5 stars. Replacement level 90s rap, with the bonus that it has also rap in Spanish (but not as good as Mellowman Ace).
I don't really like male rappers
Boring
It’s ok but not my kind of vibe
not for me
2.5
West coast rap hip hop
Sounds too much like Beastie Boys
The melting pot of this album is cool. I get some lyric fatigue with everything being about guns and drugs. You write what you love though, I guess. There are some great beats here, with a semi- annoying flow on top. Ultimately not my thing, but I like that it exists.
It was alright, not really my go-to music. I feel like we have had very different life experiences.
Juvenile. The beats are tighter than the crappy lyrics.
sounds generic hip-hop to me.. Favorite track: how i could just kill a man other picks: stoned is the way of the walk
Bam bum bam bum
A bit underwhelming. Very similar sounding from the beginning to the end. Little variance in flow.
The sounds just didn’t appeal to me. Sounds pretty whiney.
More Hip Hop / Rap being thrown my way. Another one that sold bucket loads of copies. What I’m hearing so far is quite interesting on the production side of things but I don’t think I’ll ever be comfortable with the genre. I listened to the full album and ultimately there wasn't really anything here to encouraged me to give it a second go. Couldn't really find any connection with it
Ok. I think. But not my type.
# Album Name: # Cypress Hill # Artist: # Cypress Hill # Rating: 2/5 # Comments: Honestly not my thing at all. I still prefer the sounds and style of early hip hop but none of the songs i could relate with and nothing stood out as good. # Top Tunes: None # Would I listen to it again? No
If the Beastie Boys were from California instead of New York they would be Cypress Hill, and as such, are they are equally lame.
1. I didn’t smoke dope in the early 90s, so the social appeal of CH never made its way to my ends 2. This music hurts my head. How on earth is it compatible with weed consumption?
American Rap.
I needed to hear this album like I need a hole in my head. Next….
Short loops
Rap med mycket repetitiva vokaler. Bra funky beats
Not very interesting
Fun listen but won't be back.
Cypress Hill were really big with my fellow 14-year-olds back when, and I owned a copy or another of their albums myself then. Never really got the appeal, although stylistically at least, they came to create a very unique thing all their own. You can see it here already, albeit not yet fully formed.
i hate cypress hill's shrill vocal style, compound that with the fact their lyricism sucks ass and the only reason they get a 2 instead of a 1 is most of their instrumentals are good. this is basically danny brown from the 90s.
You wake up to the warm afternoon glow of the California sun streaming through the fucked up venetian blinds of your filthy green waste smelling apartment. You look at the clock, it’s 3pm. “Dios mio” you say as you look at the stain on your carpet. You’ve knocked your bong over in your sleep and the rancid water is currently seeping into your carpet. You grab the lukewarm half drunk forty ounce of malt liquor from your nightstand, take a swig, and shoo the flies away from the room temperature white castle that’s been sitting on your coffee table all night. Need that fuel before you go to the studio. You drive downtown in your extremely modified continental, the most expensive thing you own by a huge margin, and get into the studio, you spit out a chunk of black mucus and prep your nasally voice for a hard day of recording, but first you flip a coin, today will I rap about smoking weed, or killing people? You spend ten minutes in the studio saying the n word way more than someone of your complexion should be. You sink into some sort of bean bag chair. What a hard days work, time for a cone. This album is cypress hills worst. They have good beats but the songs are nigh indistinguishable from each other. The rage version of I could just kill a man is better. This album goes on for too long.
Nah
Not my kind of music
Not my favorite
I read Cyprus Hill’s wikipedia page in preparation for my listen, and when it came to the description of B-Real’s voice I wasn’t worried. It’s like the Beastie Boys, their voices weren’t annoying, it fit the cadence of the music. I really couldn’t stand B-Real’s voice on this. And the fact that s lot of the instrumentals are also annoying was really off-putting. I don’t understand the people who are saying that this is the album that made Hip-Hop click for them. I’m already a fan of Hip-Hop and I don’t get it. Overall, I don’t think it’s bad enough to warrant one star, I don’t think it’s interestingly bad enough, and it isn’t boring necessarily. But still, I did not enjoy this at all
Rap, 1991 -> 2
was expecting more
One or two interesting tracks
Fine. Nothing fancy, but not too bad
Not for me, surely for someone though. Might work better if you're a narcotic?
Meh

Not my favorite. But influenced a lot of rock bands I like, so that's cool. 2/5
Some of the samples were really fun and I'm obsessed with the sloshy hi hat samples but most of this just doesn't hit my ear right
Liked parts of it, meh on a lot. Being stuck in a clean room listening to Pigs and I Could Kill A Man on repeat for 45 minutes probably didn't help
One of my least favorite bands. This album doesn’t change my mind.
This was a great hip hop record, insane beats and flows, liked the rhymes too... The only thing is that it doesn't have that replyability, like yeah first time listen was good but its not going into my rotation-
Meh
Never listened to this debut. And what a weird choice for the list. It is much more old school rap influenced than I ever would have thought this group was. It doesn't quite sound like them yet, though the lyrical content is similar.
I've never had anything in my life that allows me to relate with gangsta rap... I've had some struggles, but you know, suburban white girl struggles. This is a whole ass vibe that I can't access, nor do I want to. I'm glad the people who love it really love it though.
Highlights: How Could I Just Kill A Man, Tres Equis. In a nutshell: "I wrote this track on weed and speed. My philosophy is ACAB. When hoes see my dick, they concede. Max rhymes, cliches to the extreme." Pardon the bad attempt at rapping. I’m getting the vibe that Cypress Hill rode the coattails of Public Enemy and N.W.A. Some witty rhymes, more self-referential bullshit (a pet peeve of mine). Liked the samples used throughout. It was difficult to connect with this album. But I don’t hate it. Overall: 4/10
Couldn't get through it. Sometimes this list makes me wonder if I even like music
Not a fan
Not for me
Nah
Not bad but not fully invested
Eh, it's okay. Nothing that interest me
lyrically and thematically dull and repetitive, can't see anyone actually enjoying this unless they are getting high. maybe then it would be a 3
good beats . how many times did they say cypress hill? 10 thousand maybe? a little too many drugs. enjoyable if you're not paying attention
Def not my thing lol, fine I guess
I have not heard of this band before but I didn’t expect a gangsta rap group from the name. I’m not really familiar with that genre of music but I found this album to be pretty good. I liked the song psycobetabuckdown as it had a catchy melody. I probably won’t listen again as it didn’t gravitate to me too much though.
Classic early 90s rap. Best to leave it in the 90s tho
