Reviews (page 6 of 7)

This might be one of the whitest albums I’ve ever heard. LOL

Meandering- I’ve forgotten most of it already

No es de mi estilo. Las letras una mierda.

this was pretty ok

Not blown away but a nice listen. Can't see me returning to this in a hurry. However better than I thought. Wrongly assumed beige slow ramblings but actually well crafted tunes. Nice new experience. 2.5/5

Some of this is okay, but it’s mostly because of the features. Crosby’s voice doesn’t really hold up on its own. There was some promise at the beginning of the Cowboy song, but the stuff about the Indian girl was rather cringe.

It's meh to be honest

Even an All-Star lineup of guest musicians can't keep this album from being a very typical late-60s-to-early-70s Laurel Canyon Hippie Club Folk fest. I did enjoy Phil Lesh's appearances on the album. His bass tone at the time had a particular timbre that I really like. Beyond that, I doubt I will remember this record.

This is perfectly fine, but it is a negative WAR CSNY solo album. Probably a 2.5 but I’ll round down to two.

That first song is such a mess. Yeah idk abouth this one. "Cowboy Movie" is prety decent and "Laughing too". The rest is prety much background music to me. Nothing really bad but far from anything good. Nevermind the 2 last songs are really bad. Hes trying to be poetic and all with the name/lyrics of these track and weird vocal effect but he just sounds dumb as shit.

Didn't hate it. Didn't love it. Crosby has an interesting writing method that's a little off-kilter which I enjoy.

I would have given this a 3, but the hippie bullshit on the last three songs pissed me off.

Top Songs:

Fuck off with folk rock, boring acoustic shit and 192 albums from Crosby Young Stills Nash.

If I Could Only Remember One Song

I don't really understand what this album is trying to do?? Or why it would be highly regarded? I guess the last track is a good example of ambient yoga music.

Familiar and enjoyable

Certainly nothing memorable, just felt like 1/3, maybe 1/4 as good as what I'm used to hearing with his voice.

Turns out he needs Stills and Nash

Not my music

music is hated. (⌐■_■)

This is better than some boomer folk rock. It’s better than CSNY. It’s got great guest appearances. Crosby is a really nice singer. But it’s still too high of a concentration of boomer folk rock. The first song is called Music Is Love for gods sake. Come on man

talks from the nose if he was an animal he would definitely be a duck if he had a divine job he would be an angel duck forgettable

Simply boring, every song sound the same

Background music. Nothing really grabs you. Favorite: None Would I listen to it again: No

Another album in the nice-but-dull bucket.

Meh. Don't think I was in the mood for it. Was sorta snoozing through listening to it. Didn't interest me.

Not for me

2.5 - Each song on this album is something that would play in the intro or outro of a sentimental movie, like maybe Forrest Gump. Didn't really stand out to me, but gives you that lingering feeling.... makes you think about your ancestors or a long lost love

If I could only forget

I can hear you, Neil! Put your editing pants on my friend!! I guess it’s what I’d expect a Byrds-CSNY-style solo record to sound like. It’s alright, but I’ve always thought Crosby was the weakest of the CSNY songwriters (sorry) so a whole album of his material is not the most compelling. It’s meandering and unfocused, but it’s pretty enough.

Review - First solo album of his I've ever heard. Not bad exactly but very bland, no tracks stood out to me. Definitely not one you need to hear before you die. Rating - 3/10 Need to hear? NO

Sparkly and tubey David takes himself very seriously on this. Somehow pretentious hippy music. Should be something i like, but I don’t.

Folk Rock, 1971 -> 2

Spaghetti an die WAND

*shrug*

Walmart Bob Dylan Never liked folk, never met someone who isn't either mental or over the age of 60 that does. Excruitaingly mediocre for a top 1000 most influential album

Cool songs and story but messy putting it together.

Well that just about sums up the empty droning sound of the hippie. It is atmospheric but also pretty bland.

Uumm deepening my depression

Weak commune tunes. Would have been a 1 if not for the cowboy song. I can't even be bothered to go back and look what it's actually called.

As part of a group, Crosby is great. Solo is not as great.

It's was OK, but nothing was memorable.

Immensely forgettable white dude.

Felt he needed a bit more of Stills, Nash and perhaps even Young

If only he could have remembered not to make this record!

I listened to this twice through and lost focus both times. It's nice music that I found worked well in the background, a kind of folksy rock that does not offend but also did not make a huge impression on me. 3/10

dad music, good for just doin stuff around the house

I was excited about this as I love David Crosby's voice. This album was beautiful and something totally different than I was expecting. I was expecting some CSNY type stuff. This definitely wasn't that. It was a decent album, but nothing that I would intentionally listen to.

Great voice but not very inspired songwriting

Boring as shit

5/10 If I Could Only Remember This Album

Talented musician with nothing to say, and determined to say it anyway.

Kinda bland. I dug Cowboy Movie though.

The streaming service that I use that's definitely legal suggested Steely Dan after I finished this album and I much preferred that

Not bad, but no takeaways for me. Feels almost more like background music

Why not

It’s okay enough, points to what more is to come.

Just when I thought I was done with CSN, CSNY, and The Byrds, here comes David Crosby, with his goofy little mustache, to drop a Lee Corso "not so fast my friend" on me. I'm not familiar with any of DC's solo work, but I'd wager that this album will fall somewhere between 'meh' and 'fine' on my rating scale. I'd put this solo effort from David Crosby squarely in the 'meh' camp. This album had some nice guitar playing and some good harmonies, but nothing on here really jumped out at me. I literally just finished listening to this, and I've pretty much all but forgotten what I just heard. I didn't find the songwriting particularly great, and even though the guitar playing and harmonies were nice, nothing evoked any sort of feeling or reaction from me. I'm not big on CSN (with or without Y), but man, you hit me with a 'doo-doo-doo-doo-doo, doo-doo-de-doo-doo-doo' and I can instantly hear the guitar of "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" in my head. This album definitely doesn't have anything close to that. It's a shame that this album is such a snooze, because some really talented folks worked on it. I'm giving this album two stars, mostly for the guitar playing on "Music Is Love" (the vocals were not my jam), the gentle harmonies on "Tamalpais High," and the pedal steel guitar playing on "Laughing." This album was pretty pleasant to listen to, but I found it pretty bland and forgettable, and I'm not sure it's stood the test of time to earn a place on this list.

boring shit. 2/5

More tedious, self indulgent tosh from Crosby, Stills or Nash. They are completely interchangeable. Utterly unremarkable.

For a group of people who fancied themselves as bringing a peace-love-and-understanding enlightenment to the World, the hippies proved to be just as predominantly-self-indulgent as every other group of human beings. This album perfectly captures both sides of that dichotomy; the pretension and the reality. It sounds like a collection of slightly-better-than-competent musicians, who don't often play together, noodling to their heart's content without serious regard for either the art form or the audience; producing an album that, while not unpleasant, is wholly unmemorable. That said, I'm not experiencing the too-familiar indignation at having this album included on the list. It's mildly interesting in a musical-history way. Cowboy Music is splendidly weird and Laughing sounds like CSN from an alternate universe (or, what CSN may have sounded like, on occasion, if Steven Stills wasn't such an overbearing ass). And again, it isn't unpleasant to listen to.

I liked the CS&N sound, but too slow and monotonous.

Some cool guitar work but mostly boring

Enjoyed “Cowboy Movie” rest of the album not so much.

Beautifully spaced-out, deeply sincere, and somehow feels like music designed to be overheard from another room while everyone involved is lying on the floor. Respectable, but also mildly narcotic.

There are times I believe this list should be called "1001 Albums Featuring Members of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young that You Must Hear Before You Die." I'm a fan of CSNY and their music. I really like Neil Young's solo work. If I Could Only Remember My Name reminds me a lot of CSN's first album as a group. It has a group of songs that are not bad but are very sleepy, especially on the back half of this record. The last three songs are basically instrumentals with vocals in the background. I enjoyed the first 3-4 songs, though I feel like David Crosby really focused more on the harmonies on some of these songs more than he focused on writing really good songs that support the harmonies. There was no need for a David Crosby solo album in here, just like there was no need for a Stephen Stills solo album, much like there was no need for an album from Stephen Stills with a whole other band. I don't think anyone can doubt the impact CSNY had on music, but much of the inclusion of their music on this list seems purely for nostalgic reasons and not because the albums are good. I do not consider this album to be vital and as I type this sentence I can't decide if I am going to give it a "2" because the music isn't good and there's no need for the album to be in the book. I am tired of living under the thumb of Boomers who think any artist with an acoustic guitar and brings back fond memories of a time that probably never existed is worthy of being considered very important. We have lived under your thumb long enough and you aren't a rebel anymore. You ran a hedge fund and could afford to retire early because the generation before you didn't screw the world up like you did. Or should I give it a "3" because it's not THAT bad and is unobtrusive.

Big fan of Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. But after giving this album a listen not sure how much ole David Crosby contributed to the success of that group.

An all star cast of Laurel Canyon & SF psych scene fixtures get together for a loose jammy album with very unstructured and honestly pretty weak songs, but a very chilled out, if uninspired, vibe. Bluesy, folksy, astral, primal. It's got some great vocal harmony and the a strong performance from DC, but mostly it's at it's best when it's basically a Grateful Dead live session with some great Jerry Garcia noodling and fun exploratory bass from Phil Lesh and Jack Casady.

i like the cover

I guess this is fine for what it is, and not as bad as some of the groups he was in. At least it's pretty short.

What a snoozefest Not for me

An album I wanted to enjoy more than I did. Thought everything was fine, but didn't wow me in the same way that CSNY did on their album, like this was missing essential parts that make it more engaging. Fine enough and very soothing, but nothing compelling me to come back to

Liked it more than I thought I would but still not really for me

mostly forgettable

Adequate background vibes.

The Good: Knowing we are not alone! The Bad: Not knowing one’s name, when it is clearly listed on the album… The Ugly: Realizing that my name isn’t David… or Crosby… After having sat through the album Deja Vu, by CSNY, I was kind of looking forward to this here little excursion… but then I found out that we don’t know who we are, leading me to stop the excursion before getting lost in the woods too! So yeah, this was not was I was hoping it would be. One too many songs just drag along, probably loved by plenty a hippy, enjoying a little acid trip, while trying to recall their own name. Chalk this album up to an experience which I will not be repeating. 2*

I got kind of bored and the 37 minutes felt more like an hour

*1971. *This was fine. Not memorable at all, but good background music. *CSNY is better than solo Crosby, but this had the same vibe. RATING - 6/10

2/5 Mr. Crosby, if you wanna remember your name, you should smoke less 😅 Jokes aside, the only interesting part about this is that it's psych rock, but it doesn't come close to the really good stuff. Crosby seemingly smoked so much weed that he forgot how to write actual lyrics. They match the IQ of a newborn by mostly using "da-de-da". The last song also belongs in a church and not on an album like this. I also read a bunch of reviews and it turns out that most people who rated this album really high know who CSNY were. For the record, I know but I don't care. I have a feeling that there have been too many Hippies involved in which albums to put in 1001's list, which is measurable by the amount of folk rock we've encountered in just a month already. If you're one of them, could you please stop? Go and glue yourself on a road and get hit by a truck or something like all the new doom hippies of my generation do.

Never heard of this album or artist before and, frankly, I have no idea what I'm in for. This brand of album cover is very 90s-coded, though I can't help but notice that this thing was released in 1971. Were I to guess, I suspect I'm in for a folk album, though I'm really taking a shot in the dark with that one. Yup, folk. I'm not a folker, and I suspect the ship for me to become one is already long at sea. There are a few interesting genres in here, though truth be told this album is deathly, deathly boring. There's a great bit of dead air in here, which is made even worse by the nondescript feelings I have for country. "Cowboy Movie" is pretty alright, even if the song is way too long. The bluesy/country sound is a good blend and an interesting pivot for the album. Crosby's vocals aren't half-bad, either. "Traction in the Rain" is a good tune from later in the album. The atmospheric acoustic guitar performance is pretty pleasing, and Crosby's vocals are once again good. "Song With No Words" is another good tune - I wasn't expecting to be hit with two good tunes back-to-back. The rambling vocal style is well-executed, and I am once again a fan of the delicate instrumentation. Book time. A lot of collaborators. Charted decently. Moving over to Wikipedia reveals that this album has a cult following. Yeah, nah. This thing kinda sucks dick. In place of this album, I humbly submit The Mollusk by Ween for inclusion on the list.

Strong hippie vibes. Can't say I enjoyed the album. Bits of it were nice — like Cowboy Movie as a track or some random progressions in other tracks — but that doesn't make a great album. The album experience feels like a comedy coming-of-age film soundtrack. I think the collaboration was the highlight rather than the music and inspiration itself. If you look at the albums released in 1970-1972 there is an incredible amount of psychedelic rock that blows this out of the water. I could barely finish the album because there's only so much "dee dum, deedle dee dum da" non-lexical vocables and harmonizing between soft voices that I can endure before I realize there has been zero oomph from anyone for a few minutes. I went back to Cowboy Movie after the last track, and even that managed to feel like an 8-minute slog instead of a redemption. 2.5 / 5 if I'm feeling generous.

Eh. CSNY but without any actual good songs? I enjoy the harmonies that are ubiquitous amongst their music, but that’s about it. This solo effort seems like it rode the wave of success of previous group efforts, but doesn’t hit the mark of quality for me.

2-3 seems like stuff my dad would like

even while i was listening to this, it was just forgettable

From someone in Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young this was about the sleepiest album I have heard in a long time. I would have thought with the people involved this could have been a fun an rock forward album and not this weak showing.

'Music is Love' was more 'Music is Hate' for me, are those Neil Young's thin, whiny vocals? Yup. Apparently he contributes vocals to 'What Are Their Names' as well. Lovely. The second track, 'Cowboy Movie' is much more to my taste. It does drag on a bit, though. 'Tamalpais High (At About 3)' sounds like 'Steely Dan' in one of their blander moments. and that's the album's 'three tracks to grab me' quota reached. I'll sample the others just in case. More of the same. According to Wikipedia 'In 2010, Crosby's album was listed second, behind the Beatles' Revolver, on the "Top 10 Pop Albums of All Time" published in the Vatican City newspaper'. Had they been at the communion wine? This isn't for me. It is terribly bland and self-indulgent. 2/5.

Tons of talent on the record, seemingly wasted. Tough to stay engaged with this one.

and the crowd goes mild!!!! this was boring when it wasn't actively annoying. there's just no need for yet another unnecessary bluesy-folk solo album by an old white guy from a more important band on this list... at least it's not neil young i guess. my favorite part of this is the album cover, specifically the title and artist. i like to imagine david crosby making the face on the cover trying to think of his own name, then immediately answering his own question. classic comedy. favorites: tamalpais high (at about 3), traction in the rain, orleans... mostly the songs where david does minimal singing.

I found this somewhat meandering and aimless. Vocal mixing was not good either. This list has far too much CSNY for my taste.

Mellow (listening at midnite...ugh). Nice harmonies across a lot of the tracks, but all in all I was unable to focus thru the fog of sameness. Listened before? N Saved tracks? N Favorite tracks? Song with No Words ⭐️⭐️ Liked it OK

Not bad. But I think he misses his mates on this one.

Whoever mixed this album should be fired

Pretty uninspired stuff. Not a single standout melody. It’s trying at once to be both experimental and straight-ahead folk and ends up falling between in no man’s land.

A trippy hippy dippy California folk album with cult leader David Crosby leading his band of stoner friends through a set of meandering, disconnected and randomly assembled jams. A few of them don't even bother to have lyrics. There are moments - like "Cowboy Movie" and "Laughing", where the vibe, Crosby's songwriting, and the crack team of ace musicians all click, but those moments are too few and far between.

It's a little too much of the same thing for me, maybe a little too much mellow? David Crosby is great, and if I had to hang out with someone from CSN, it would be him. But this album just isn't for me.

I SO BADLY wanted to like this. I love CSNY. I love his voice. I love the musicians who played on this record. But it sounds incomplete, like they were just screwing around in the studio and hit “record”

Nope 2.5

Inoffensive, the guy can really play but still better as a part of a larger group.

The album ended and 10 minutes later honestly I can’t remember what it sounds like

This was better than listening to some metal album that hurt my ears. I’ll give it that, but that’s about it. This album was boring. I kept hoping the next song would become a favorite, but that never happened. Oh well. On to the next one!

I really loved parts of this. ‘Cowboy Movie’ was beautifully bluesy. ‘Laughing’ was great. Some nice guitar work throughout. Lost it for me with way too much ‘do-be-doo-ing’. Sometimes for whole songs. A high 2

Nice harmonies, but slow and repetitive is just not for me. So bored. At least I was able to do some yoga to it. Listened before? N Saved to library? N Favorite track(s): N/A

Lite av ett sömnpiller.

2.5 - kinda slow, no songs really stand out to me, but not horrible - expected a little more from all the names attached to this production

...my name, my excitement, my will to live...

Lester Bangs famously dismissed it as indulgent, and frankly, he had a point. The songs often drift without direction, and unless you’re in a particularly mellow, altered state of mind, it’s hard to latch onto anything concrete. There are moments of beauty, sure, but they’re buried under a fog of cosmic noodling. If you’re looking for structure, hooks, or lyrical clarity, you might find yourself wondering—as the title suggests—what exactly you’re supposed to remember.

Quite enjoyed as a background track but wouldn’t listen again

Meh. Some glimpses here and there of what was to come via Crosby Stills Nash & Young. But on the whole I found it rather insipid.

I like him with CSN/CSNY much better. Nothing to write home about.

Occasionally there are moments of respite on tracks such as "Tamalpais High (At About 3)" or "Laughing", but mostly it's just tiresome uncreative Laurel Canyon rock and folk. The instrumentals are mixed wonderfully but the vocals are frustratingly buried in the mix like needles in a haystack. If I wanted jam I would get some toast. Feels crappy like the Nick Drake albums. So, of course Mr. Dimery loved it. I'll bet you could have remembered your name if you'd just managed to put down the beer, doobie, and cocaine, but it was LA in the early seventies, so who are we kidding?

Positive: great sounding album. Creates a vibe like making an album late night on good substances with your buds Negative: at best pleasant, and at worst boring. not an album I would return to. If Crosby’s name wasn’t attached it would be a curio from the period with a small cult

Meh nothing to get too excited about

Pleasant enough psychedelic folk, but nothing really jumps out.

che sbatti

The bluesy bits were surprising to me, not so much the folky bits. Better than what I expected, but ultimately a bit to laidback for my liking.

After the success of the great first CS&N album, I anxiously awaited the three solo albums from the boys. Had highest hopes for Stills, then Crosby, then Nash. All were pretty mediocre with few tracks as good as when they were together. The Nash album was a pleasant surprise and turned out to be the best of the three. Crosby still came in last. All pale in comparison to any of Neil Young’s first three solo albums.

Gorgeous chord (my favourite one) towards the end of Music Is Love. All quite nice but a too uneventful. That was a LONG 37 minutes. Woah hang on now - I'd Swear There Was Somebody Here is spooky ethereal! Great album-ender.

Some nice ideas on here but not the strongest album by any means.

Hmm. Fine to listen to, but pretty boring, all told. Spotify moved on to play another track after the album ended without me realising, and I thought 'finally some life' before checking to see it was a different artist. Cowboy Movie was certainly the outstanding track on the album. 5/10

Partito male, poi si è ripreso. Ma in generale non è proprio il mio mood.

The best I can say is it's listenable.

Kind of a bland and blissed out post summer of love album with a bunch of Crosby's pals. It just washed over me.

2+ Stars (6/15)

I like CSN&Y but only Young could really make it on his own. The album is pleasant but that’s all. 2

Only the airy elements of CSNY. Sounds like a less cool version of Grateful Dead jams and a dude who smoked a little too much before the session.

# 509 /1001 : If I Could Only Remember My Name Zzzzz. BORED. A two line bio, not much meat and just a sad dude with a guitar. 40 minutes of sadness and it feels more like this album is on the list for Crosby's reputation, rather than for the music... Listened : 24/06/2025

Meio psicodélico, numa pegada parecida com Led Zeppelin. Não curti.

A very meh album. 4/10

It's fine. It didn't hurt my ears but hopefully I don't listen again, either.

Pleasant and pretty background music. Nothing earth-shattering.

Has a moment or two but really forgettable. Just feels bland and I don’t think I will be revisiting

I played it and I didn't remember any of the songs. It's not bad, but it doesn't appeal to me at all.

Not my cup of tea personally Best track cowboy movie, music is lovely also ok.

I like the Byrds, CSNY, and David Crosby as a person, but I don't understand why this particular item was on the list. It feels unambitious and unintentional.

largely forgettable

David Crosby on his own is prettttty trippy (and bluesy), isn't he?

what am i missing

I love all the iterations of CSNY, but this David Crosby album just did not do much for me.

It was relaxing by the end, but didn't stand out to me.

Liian hentoista, hiljaista, pehmoista, utuista, epäkiinnostavaa menoa omaan makuun. Paremmin en osaa asiaa ilmaista.

Dreadfully slow. I liked it at times but more often than not it failed to hold my attention.

J'ai failli abandonner après deux minutes J'aurai raté le morceau suivant (dommage) mais aussi le reste de l'album (pas dommage)

It’s a bit of a shame this album takes up a spot on this list. I’ve had two Neil Young albums in the last few weeks, and I think the universe could sense my complaining and threw me an album with Neil featured at the end of its first song. In the spirit of all that, just copy and paste my reviews for those Neil Young albums - anything that sounds like the harmonizing of CSN&Y is worth your time, leave out all the rest. “Tamaplais High” was a good group jam. “Laughing” achieved a similar sound. Most everything else was a bit bland and forgettable. Put it on in the background of doing something else to get at least something out of it. 2/5 much too similar to all other classic folk rock without doing anything unique, memorable, or something that CSNY didn’t do better

It's fine. Nothing special...everything sort of all sounded the same. Wouldn't go outta my way to listen to this album again by any means. Even the most popular songs on the album were not ones that I knew or really loved.

Got excited when I saw the album. First song was kind of off putting and 'Cowboy Movie' was decent and the rest of the album was tame. For the list of talented people on this album its a disappointing one. Originally had this as 2.5 but came to Song with No Words. Now thats some self-indulgent shite. 2/5.

All a bit meh...

Pretty forgettable - even Neil Young can’t make this better.

5/6/2025: RiverNerns, but more shouty to start. Lacks cohesion.

Soft dad rock. Honestly kinda bland for me. Maybe it had a lot of big names, but still 2*

Takovy typicky americky bard, neni to uplne moje.

I love Crosby, Stills and Nash. They're even better with Neil Young. But David's solo career is a huge disappointment. The songwriting is subpar, especially "Cowboy Movie", the instrumentals interludes are stupid, and even the Neil collab was trash. The best song is Laughing.

cowboy done boring and corny

Not bad, not to my taste

Good if want that vibe

not memorable

Не интересно совсем

is boring

I wanted to like this, but I kept finding myself drifting off and not listening. I kind of remember the first track. Alas. At least the title felt ironic.

323/1001 🌕🌕🌑🌑🌑

Prefer his work with Stills and Nash

Gear: ZMF Bokeh Artwork: 🌅🧔‍♂️🌊 Production: 🫢🤔🤷 Music: ☮️🙄🥱 Rating: 🌅🌅/5

This album comes up a little short for me. I love CSNY but Crosby solo doesn't reach anywhere near the heights that the group does. There are certainly some beautiful sounding moments but it's just all a bit boring. 4.5/10 (2.25/5)

This really struggled to hold my attention. Just not my thing I guess.

Lots of oohs and ahs and a few umms. Doesn't make for great songwriting. Neil Young and Joni Mitchell try but they can't save this. Is it just me or does Cowboy Movie sound a lot like Cowgirl In The Sand but not as good.

p222. 1971. 2 stars. Meandering hippy noodling. Sounds like outtakes from a CSNY album - "sorry Dave, these don't make the final cut." On the plus side, it's short, and has some gorgeous harmonies.

I prefer Nash's solo stuff. Check out Better Days - it's a great album.

I'd rather listen to Stills, Nash or Young.

2 probs isn't fair as it was harmless rather than offensive, but ultimately forgot I was even listening to anything...

Boring semi-folk/psychedelic rock for fake hippies.

yeah i dunno i never heard of david crosby and id be fine not finding out he exists, no offence to you mr crosby kinda boring the singing is bad some music is interestingish NNN

David Crosby, that's the one of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young that I always liked the least. I think that's how I feel about his debut album too. There are things that I recognize, but I don't think they're by him. Guitar and vocals by Neil Young, vocals by Joni Mitchell, etc. I'm really having a hard time with this album, but I don't think I like it. So 2 stars and a clear point deduction for David Crosby

This feels intentionally uneven. Tiresome enough to help me understand why others hated hippies.

Horribly dull.

There are two types of 70s folk in my eyes. One is genuine and borrows from actual folk ways. It stands on tradition and adds to it in a way that makes the whole better. And then there’s this, people who like the vibes of folk man. Free love and shit man. The hippies lost and this is why. This says nothing. It sucks. The cowboy song was okay.

It was good, but forgettable. Nothing jumped out at me.

Not heard any of these before. Music is Love is very easy listening. He thought he was onto something with Cowboy Movie? 7 minutes of a 37 min album. Liking it more than I thought I would. Song With No Words is putting me to sleep. Three decent songs early and the rest were pretty tame and uninteresting to me.

oh mein gott das cover isch jo schlimmmm. aber defür heisst s erste lied music is love hahahah. wow david musics for fun music is free hahaha. cowboy movie groovt recht guet, mag wie knackig d gitarre töned. aber isch chli lang für nöd würklich e idee füren song oder? tamapalis high langwiliig. laughing schön, schöni harmonies. what are their names chli e langwiligs instrumental song with no words isch au kein song sorry zwei akkörd und duiduduidu isch kei lied. denn hett ich scho ei million lieder gschriebe. s gitarresolo isch okaaay. orleans französisch? okay okay. id swear there was somebody afoch chli umegejohle. kids abd dogs fangt schomol horror aah.

If there was ever an album to really prove why CSN and CSNY were amazing, this was it. I understand now why Crosby's name goes first on CSN, he's clearly the architect of the sound. But boy does he struggle to pull a thought together, or really hone it into a killer song. It's beautiful music, but it's not interesting. Desperately needed Stills and Young (and maybe Nash, not as familiar) to put everything together, bring some oomph, and hone it to what it was. Still a nice relaxed album, just not great.

Not for me

Not really my thing

God damn this was a long 37 minutes of my life. So boring. It's not obnoxious enough to be a 1 but I definitely don't get it, the final boss of all baby boomer music. The most Rock Music music ever. I really liked Orleans but the rest is not for me. Boring stoner shit. BORINGGGGG

How did this completely unremarkable album that I would have never heard of if not for this list make it in?

I liked this one, I didn't love it though. It's surprisingly dreamy for an early-70's record, but most of the songs didn't stick with me. I may revisit this at some point to see if I feel different about it. Key tracks: Laughing Song With No Words (Tree With No Leaves)

The weak link of Crosby stills and Nash then

Kind of boring 2.5

Bit boring.

If i could only remember anything about this album

This was largely unoffensive to have on in the background but anytime I did zone into it, it was a bit hard going and depressing.

This album was nice and chill but also confusing. It didn't seem to have a concept or direction, and overall, it just felt too restrained. And it was kind of a snooze fest. And what the heck with that ending.

sorry, very boring, I can't

Solid.

If I could only remember the album.

Meh. He was better in CSNY. Do not like his voice solo, instruments sounded perfectly fine on many of the tracks but his voice just didn't. Also lyrics were kinda meh and bland. Overall just felt like a bleh album. Nothing doing for me.

meh. he's better with CSN(Y).

Not for me

I wouldn't have added this album to the 1001 list. It's not bad; it's just that there is nothing that distinguishes this album from anything CSNY ever did.

While the vibes and guitarr playing is great a lot of the songs are just to weird for my taste. Its fun getting introduced to music by a person I have heard about from other things (crosby, stills & Nash) but this isn't something I will listen to again.

Classic Crosby. I loved this stuff in my 20's as a folk loving hippie. Now I find it a bit weak and flowery. He's better with a band. Music is love - flowery crap Cowboy movie - better but I still skipped it. Nice guitar. Ended up skipping every song until I abandoned it. He's so much better with a band!

Enjoyed guitar notes

There is nothing special about this

It's good but David Crosby shines when he's in a collaboration not a solo venture. I think he even admitted to such. RIP

Zzzzzzz. And he can’t sing. Also supposedly there were many guest artists on this album but somehow it all sounded the same to me. Hard pass.

It was okay

Musically a bit lame but just o.k. Sometimes his whining voice can be annoying. worst: "Music Is Love", "I'd Swear There Was Somebody Here"

Maaannnn this is some Sunday morning listening.

A pretty nothing album

Interchangeable boring folk rock. The bluesy parts are better, but even then the musical performance is below average.

Some songs were cool, but overall it wasn't overly memorable.

70’s

Slow, soft rock

I had the weekend to absorb and ponder a rating for this record, but if I could only remember what I listened to a few days earlier. This album is not memorable and there's a reason why the "best" works involving David Crosby are works involving other people. When I think of the Byrds or CSN or CSNY, I hardly recall the meaningful contributions from David Crosby and that's the problem with his solo album(s). The special guests on this album gloss over the fact there's little here to see or hear. Apart from, Cowboy Movie, the album suffers from uninteresting material and bland performances from Crosby.

Not bad but not an album I’d reach for.

An album that feels very directionless and lacks any heart. There's little in the way of creativity, spunk, or excitement. It's just bland acoustic country-rock with a large host of musical superstars (or would-be superstars, anyway) scrawled onto the record sleeve, presumably to increase sales. Laughing is the only really good track here – where the atmospheric softness actually achieves its goal of being mellow yet powerful. Most of the other songs are mellow and, well, powerless. The mixing makes the texture sound oddly empty for most of the album's runtime, excluding more energetic tunes like Cowboy Movie and Music Is Love. Speaking of Music Is Love... talk about a terrible idea for an opening track. The singing is wobbly and crazed, drunkenly repeating one line for essentially the entire track. Why this is the most popular track on the album – by a significant margin – is beyond me. 2/5 Key tracks: Laughing, Song with No Words, Cowboy Movie

This didn't do it for me. A few cool moments, but that ain't enough dawg.

Paikoin muniinpuhaltelua, paikoin ok. En kuuntele toista kertaa

Rating: 2.5

Not bad but like a bunch of the albums I've listened to so far, boring.

Like a csny album but just the C. Pretty unremarkable

This album was…well…forgettable. I listened to it twice back to back and struggled to grasp anything from either listening. It wasn’t a bad album, per se, just background. Some of the harmonizing was chill, and Cowboy Movie had some good guitar work. If only I could remember this album.

Normally I vibe with Crosby, but this album just washed over me without making any impact.

The thing about getting these albums randomly is it really depends on the mood you're in and today, this album kinda bored me.

So boring, that I wished that I couldn’t remember his name.

It all kind of runs together for me. His voice is terrific, but I enjoy the CSNY stuff more.

After listening to this boring album, I definitely won’t remember his name.

Boring

This seems a bit like a worse version of yesterday's CSNY album, and that makes sense because it's 1/4 of it (and apparently featuring a ton of other people of that era/genre). It's missing the great harmonies that made Deja Vu a good album and it's unfortunately full of more aimless meandering. Cowboy Movie feels way too long for what it is, though Tamalpais High redeems it pretty quick by being a much better jam track. Unfortunately "Song with No Words" brings it back to being more tedious. I don't know, I don't want to give this a 2 but it's decidedly worse than the Crosby's work with his supergroup. If I could give this a 2.5 I would.

Maybe the blues influenced rock of the late sixties was new and innovative at the time, but after 40 years of hearing it, it just sounds old, and the guitar playing is sloppy.

The Wikipedia made me dread this; his girlfriend died and his band broke up, so he ended up doing hard drugs and hanging out in a studio whilst celebrity mates checked in on him and jammed a bit. The resulting album of mostly instrumental psychedelic folk was poorly received by the waiting press. After hearing that, the resulting ambivalence I felt when listening is miraculous. I liked reading the lyrics of the cowboy song.

började väl ganska okej men vad fan hände sen? lyssna igen

Mustaschen räddar honom från en 1:a.

Got some good bits but not for me

Yeah no...not for me.

can you imagine what it must’ve been like to be an adult when these ridiculous children started to run the world?

I love CSN, but separately, Crosby’s rough work.

A couple of good songs but a lot of slow stuff

If I'm sticking to my rating system, I WAS more annoyed than impressed. But it's not poor Crosby's fault. I'm just ready for the generator to get away from folk/psychedelic. My Spotify is now almost exclusively recommending Radiohead for me because it thinks that's all I listen to.

Just ok for me. Very hippie!

Big meh from me. Maybe it was influential for its time but to my ears there's nothing interesting going on lyrically or sonically. The first couple songs had my attention but after that I lost interest. Fav songs: - Cowboy Movie

Nicht meine Richtung

Wow! That was boring.

Wow, this was a special type of boring

Not my thing at least it was short

I didn't like the album, but it wasn't as annoying as I thought it would be. Still, I probably won't listen to it again and I don't feel like I missed anything so far.

J'ai écouté j'ai oublié aussi

I found the vocals quite bland and album overall not that memorable

Made no impression

Repetition is comedy but unfortunately this isn’t a comedy album.

Bland, inoffensive, middle of the road music. The only emotion it made me feel was boredom. Probably 1/2*

Ok, but not rememberable, lots of slow songs. I enjoyed the “radio”song son Spotify more than this, so 2**

Wasn’t too interested in this one

Still don’t really understand with every album from any part of CSNY is on here, had to be there I guess

probably didn’t give it a fair shot but it wasn’t what i needed yesterday

Not much of a fan of this album. Was never a fan of the artist and listening to this did not change that.

mmmmmeeeeeeeehhhhh music

Listened Before? N Eh, it was okay. There's missing songs here due to his political protest against spotify so I didn't get the full experience. Maybe if I'd been more impressed with the songs that are available I would have sought out the rest but I just don't care. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Cowboy Movie

It was what I expected. Thankfully, it was less than 40 minutes long. Nothing stands out on this album. He can't really sing and I did not care for the music. I tolerated it.

Sounds a bit like some Yes and America. This is some decent prog music. Track 1 Music is Love was awful but the singing and music pick up after that. Tamalpais High has some nice blues. The second half went back downhill slowly.

I wasn’t captivated by

This isn't Crosby at his best. He always hit his highest heights while playing in groups. The Byrds and the several iterations of Crosby, Stills, Nash, etc. all reach heights that this album fails to reach. It's not a bad album per se, but it's very safe. It has one sound/recipe and really doesn't deviate from it much. You can tell it's David Crosby from beginning to end, but aside from that, it's not really an album I'd deem worthy of inclusion on this list.

Is it bad? No. Is it great? No. Did I need to hear this before I die? Certainly not. I’m much more of a Young and Stills fan than I am of this. These feel like a bunch of throw away tracks that got recorded and didn’t have anywhere else to go. Dweee doh dit doh dit dee doh doh det

Folk rock muuuuy lento. Tostonazo. Un 2.

Not composed songs in the usual sense. More like Crosby and friends hanging around a recording studio, diddling around with guitars and calling it an album. Better than most people trying to do that. but still.

This album reminds me a lot of America's output, being like you're relaxing on the beach, but that beach is in the middle of the woods, on a cold day. However, unlike America's early output, which I quite enjoy, I found this to be pretty boring. I understand that perhaps this was a big step for the soft rock genre, but is that really a genre worth highlighting? I mean, half the time, David Crosby and Co. decide to replace actual lyrics with slow, thoughtful vocalizing, but it leaves the song feeling hollow. There were small bits of joy when everything did come together properly, but as someone who just listened to Deja Vu, why would I pick this over something like that?

This album seemed to get worse the longer it progressed, good thing it was only 37 minutes long. Felt like folky nonsense to me. Highlights: Cowboy Movie What Are Their Names

What the generator has taught me so far is that of the CSNY bunch, I only really rate Y... This seems more like a collection of half-finished demos/rarities 'from the vault' than a fully-fledged album, to me. The songs that do feel compete are ok, I guess. I'd listen to What Are Their Names and Orleans again.

I didn’t hate it but I didn’t really like it.

It’s ok if you like that sort of thing. Not a fan of the casual racism. And yes I know it was a different time but that doesn’t mean I have to like it.

Some good parts, but the songs are a little too long and repetitive. This era of music has some really annoying guitar sections.

Just more classic rock

Quite relaxing - it gently washed over me…

Can’t remember this one that well,mainly instrumental.not really good.Perfectly fine i guess.

Only one song that didn't bore me to death, otherwise I'd give it 1 star. Had to go to YouTube to hear the 2 songs with Neil Young, wasn't worth the extra effort.

This is my husband’s kind of music, not mine. But because it’s my husband’s kind of music, I know far more about David Crosby and his repertoire than I care to. If I had to pick a favorite song (very low bar, here), I’d say the beginning of Laughing. I like the tempo, the beat, and Crosby’s solo voice. But I don’t like the backing harmonies that pick up in the middle of the song (yes, I know it's the Grateful Dead, I don't like them either), and by the end the guitar gets too twangy. Also, the lyrics are beyond dumb: "I thought I met a man / Who said he knew a man / Who knew what was going on / I was mistaken, only another stranger that I knew". WTF?? Nothing appealing about the other songs. The lyrics for What Are Their Names are ridiculously dumb and naive. Cowboy Movie is casually racist and misogynistic. Bleh. But +1 for not being the Chemical Brothers.

plunka plunka.

Super bland folk. Nothing to write home about. Honestly I didn’t care for this and I generally find folk and folk adjacent music to be at the very least palatable. I didn’t feel that here.

Pretty mid.

Not bad, but forgettable.

Wow, what an all star line up behind Crosby, but its too bad that the music isn't very memorable. Cowboy Movie is probably the best song on the album but it sounds like re-tread Neil Young.

From the half album I was able to listen to on Spotify, it seemed decently good for a protest album. For the most part though, I found myself drifting off in between meandering guitar solos over melancholy piano chords. No hurry to revisit this one.
