Reviews (page 5 of 7)

Enjoyed the album. It's dreamy. Some of the cowboy stuff feels a bit odd/dated, but I had the feeling that I was attending a hippy church service somewhere in Appalachia. Well composed and paced in a way that many records do not consider today. Beautiful vocals and harmonies.

Not bad, but would benefit from Stills, Nash, and Young.

Wikipedia described this as an album that signifies the death of the Hippy movement. That’s exactly how this album sounded. I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Solid 3.

wierd- couldnt tell if it was in a bad way for good way

forgot I was listening

nice mix of psych and folk

The least interesting member of Crosby stills Nash and young, a group that included stills Nash and young. This is ok. He can sing and play and write decent songs. But it’s not compelling. 2.5.

Crosby’s debut solo album, this could almost be another C,S,N &Y album, except that Steve Stills is nowhere to be seen. Mind you there are many members of Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane & Santana to take his place. Graham Nash appears on 6 of the 9 trax, prescient considering that he & Crosby went on to record 4 albums together. It sounds a lot like a C,S & N or C,S,N & Y album. It’s just missing some killer trax. But I think if I played it a few mire times I could learn to love it. I bought my copy at Ashwoods over 50 years ago for $1.00 but I just have not played it much over that half-century. Silly, really.

Yea. It’s decent. That’s about it. A star studded cast doesn’t make an amazing album.

Hated the opener but the following 8-minute cut of ripping guitar riffs and meaningful storytelling creates a case for redemption right away. Strangely, purely instrumental (or gibberish lyric) tracks are the strengths of this album, with nearly indiscernible singing (even with good headphones) dragging certain tracks down. Listened to: on a train to Philadelphia. Favorite tracks: Cowboy Movie, Traction in the Rain, Orleans

Not particularly standout, but not awful either. Background noise, not as dynamic as others of the same time period

Completely serviceable but ultimately not hitting for me. Cowboy movie is great. Lots of the tracks just miss the mark. I like the project of the album but maybe it tried to be more introspective and emotional than it could really pull off.

ehhhhhhh okay

Never heard of this, ever. Didn't even know he made solo lps. Expected to strongly dislike this, but that opening track is almost mystical feeling sounding. I'm quite impressed. 3 stars for now.

Not sure what I was expecting but it was ok. Lots of twiddling instrumental stuff but probably too folky for me. Cowboy Movie was my favourite track

Yeah man, cool cool hustle hustle.

Enjoyed this lots of interesting guest musicians, and good instrumental songs.

It’s alright, nothing that stands out as great to me

No me ha llamado la atención.

This album has a dark and mysterious vibe to it. The harmonies are great, and while Laughing and Cowboy Movie are solid tracks, some of the others are a bit lacking. This album is a fine listen but it does require a certain mood to enjoy properly.

E.g. songs 1 and 2 are very different (1 sounds like naive 60s/70s John Lennon stuff, 2 is a lot rougher and very masculine, even with a bit of Led Zeppelin in the vocal as well as the guitar) A lot is going on, and I'm sure this has its merits, but it's not really something I want to listen to right now, so I think it's a 3

probably not something I’d revisit but can appreciate the artistry here

Technically good but underwhelming

I feel myself flip-flopping on this album as i'm listening to it, is it enjoyable late-60s-early-70s psych grunge rock or some of the most boring music i've listened to for this challenge? I'd like to hope the primal scream-y grunge rock of the 90s this inspired is better than the album itself. I liked the instrumental track the best.

Chill hippie session music.

Interesting, but nothing really grabbed my attention.

01) Music Is Love - 7,0 02) Cowboy Movie - 7,0 03) Tamalpais High (At About 3) - 7,5 04) Laughing - 7,0 05) What Are Their Names - 8,0 06) Traction in the Rain - 7,5 07) Song with No Words (Tree with No Leaves) - 7,0 08) Orleans - 7,0 09) I'd Swear There Was Somebody Here - 5,0 TOTAL: 7,00 (70/100) Current ranking: 117/170 I'm not really familiar with CSNY discography, even less with their solo albums. This is a nice, easy listening but not something I would listen to on my own. It has a bunch of famous contributors and I guess it's a good representative of the day and age it belongs to.

This was completely forgettable. Musically fine but nothing interesting here.

Thoughts during the first 2 songs: I love the music and his voice but the lyrics arent the greatest The rest of the album is great! SOLID 3.5/4

I don't rightly know what it is, but CSN&Y just aren't for me. I've now listened to most of their albums and their solo work, but none has really stuck out.

Like him better as part of group but you can hear where he has had influence.

Very loose

Loved the Harmonies! But nothing but a song or two grabbed me emotionally and stood out.

a low 3. has its moments

>>>>>>>>>>>> <<<<<<<<<<<<

It was fine.

Enjoyable in that west coast 70s rock vibe

It was okay

its good

This one is a pretty good jam session for some big names. There is a lot here to enjoy, but some of it can be uninvolving. Bright spot: "Cowboy Movie", a bluesy Grateful Dead-influenced jam. Good listen.

Some of these songs were pretty cool, some of them felt like nothing. It had more cool guitar then I expect.

Decent enough background music

I started it, listened to it and then it was over and I'm not sure I remember it other than it wasn't awful

Favorite Tracks: Orleans Music Is Love What Are Their Names

I liked this.

Pro: Vocals("Music Is Love", "Laughing", "What Are Their Names"), some cool experiments("Music Is Love", "Orleans", "I'd Swear There Was Somebody Here"), Graham Nash, Neil Young, Crosby's guitar, Mickey Hart Cons: Jerry Garcia (does he know more than the one guitar solo?), the cover, too much Grateful Dead slopping all over, heavy sedation

Is it cheating to add in loads of legends into your album? Despite that, it's pretty goof, but its weird I just can't ever see myself wanting to listen to this again. It's a 3 but it's potentially the highest 3 I can give

Super mellow. I like this kind of hippie nonsense. 3/5

Nice background vibe, not super engaging

Pleasant album to listen to but not really my style

Atmospheric record with nice guitar playing and vocal harmonies.

pretty cool. never listened to any of his solo stuff. liked it

1st track has a rick feel that doesn't jive with the rest of this laid back album. It's Savid Crosby, but Graham Nash, Neil Young, and Jerry Garcia are all on this album too. Laughing (backing vocals by Joni Mitchell) Traction in the Rain (featuring the autoharp) Song With No Words

This seems to be the dad rock equivalent of the Wu tang clan with one member making an album that features all of the other members at some point which is the only interesting thing I can see in it. It’s completely fine music I just cannot bring myself to give a shit about Crosby stills and Nash in any serious way.

This is what happens when a hippie gets depressed and turns to hard drugs. In this case, this hippie had tons of musical virtuoso buddies he could call in favours from. I enjoyed the instrumental pieces more than the ones with lyrics, by and large, and enjoyed more than I thought I was going to enjoy.

Your name is David Crosby bro, it's right there man

A perfectly fine album from Crosby. I got the CSN album last week and this is similar. However it doesn't reach the heights other work does. 3.5/5

Honestly, not a bad album. At least he knows his style.

Very enjoyable jam band record with a variable who's who of guest musicians contributing. However, in the context of 1001 Albums to hear before you die, I probably could have died without hearing this album.

Not a bad album.

That's a primal music kind of album. I respect it though. It is very original.

I’d Swear There Was Somebody Here when I listened to this. Was like watching a Cowboy Movie.

Kind of whiney. Crosby works great when balanced by someone else, but kind of grating on his own.

For me it was a nothing.

David Crosby is better known for his work with group: the Byrds, CS&N, CSN&Y, and number collaborations. If I Could Only Remember My Name is is first solo album, which was recorded soon after his remarkable success first with CS&N's first album, and then CSN&Y's first album. Crosby's solo work has the same defining elements as the the music of his successful bands; rich vocal harmonies and expressive acoustic guitar solos. However, the tracks on this album are not as consistent as Crosby's work with his well-known groupings.

I did like most of it. Seemed to get lost or disconnected from itself sometimes. But worth a listen

Not for times with bad mood

No me ha llamado la atención.

#92. David Crosby is the Ringo of CSNY, isn't he. It's bit strange, and honestly I can't tell whether I like it or not. 3/5: Octopus's Garden out of ten.

Goed album.

nothing extraordinary to me

chillig

I really enjoyed this, picked up where CSNY left off.

This album was very chill and mellow. No complaints from me.

This is definitely not what I was expecting. It's a bit more experimental and heady than I would expect, but then again I don't really know a ton about David Crosby. Totally fine Sunday afternoon listen.

Some songs missing on spotify

While this could possibly be the most "music with a lowercase m, white man singing for 30 minutes" album ever made, I actually enjoyed it a lot. Turns out David Crosby was the best solo artist of CSNY. Rest in peace big guy. One of the funniest Twitter users of all time. I will never forget him telling a fan to "not quit his day job" after they sent him a painting of himself. Absolutely unhinged behavior. Strong 3, borderline 4.

Fine. Not my style and kind of boring.

Nobody can deny the musical genius of David Crosby. However I feel like what this album was lacking is more Stills, Nash and Young.

First half of this was really good, reckon Crosby is probably better than Stills and Nash, probably why his name is first. Second half gradually descended into ethereal whale song. This signature brand of folky harmony is better in small doses I think, so 36 minutes was acceptable. Not particularly my cup of tea but very listenable until the last couple of songs.

Have to agree with the group - starts off well, but by the end the wheels fall off. Might be better on repeat listenings - I think this is one of those albums that you might grow to love. Nash was always the best of the key trio anyway.

Agree with Jamie, started well and was pretty interesting, but was a bit out there by the end. Didn't mind it at all though

Not a bad album, but not really memorable either.

I mean it was alright. Not something I would really want to go back to.

If I could only remember listening to this album. Musically, it's not bad. Just nothing special about it.

Definitely letting the hippie flag fly. Generously innocuous, though it seems to think that because you have some acoustic spacey noodling and lots of echo-y voices, it must be good. Cowboy Movie was probably my favorite, getting a more directed energy and aggressive vibe.

OK, but not for me.

Sadly a rather boring album. There's nothing special about it.

Some interesting psychedelic songs on here, very reminiscent of the Grateful Dead and that era of music. Some of it is kind of boring though. 3/5 Probably won’t listen again

Didn't like it much

Hmm, not sure what I expected, but the cover and album title are very meme worthy, and I'm surprised that I haven't seen them in a meme format just yet. It wasn't too bad overall, likely helped by the mostly instrumental sound throughout. Initially after reading that the album is in the psychedelic folk genre, I was a little dubious, but after listening to the entire album, weirdly enough, I get it. With the arrangements and a strange other worldly quality, it really does fit into that extremely niche genre. Best: Song with No Words (Tree with No Leaves) Worst: What Are Their Names

Like the first half, second is alright

I had forgotten how much I like this. Songs that will be listened to in 100 years? Maybe not.

Early album with evidence of style that fully develops thru the years. Not my favorite collection but respect the harmonies and mystical instrumentation.

About 1/3 as good as any Crosby Stills Nash album

Very hippy, laid-back record, with great vocal harmonies and arrangements. A good work, but not extraordinary

Album sounds exactly like what you'd expect from cover art

Was working while listening and not fully paying attention but this worked well as background music. Not bad

Before my time. But still enjoyed.

Sadly two songs are unavailable on Spotify in the US. I mean it's alright 5/10.

She Crosby on my Stills until I Nash

Kinda ripped. Cowboy movie was a bop. wudda been better if it just ended there

Not all on Spotify

Ganske rolig

Your name is David Crosby

I had higher expectations, considering all the special guests (Nash, Young, Joni Mitchell, Grateful Dead)… bit disappointing and boring.

Easy listening

This album gave off some chill vibes. It was enjoyable, but it didn't feel significant.

Pretty chill. overall enjoyable

pleasant

Some pretty good songs on here but nothing particularly stood out. Didn't dislike any of the song some for the playlist

Old school Crosby. Still my third favorite Crosby after Bing and Sidney.

5/10. Just need a Graham Nash album for a full CSNY substandard solo album sweep

Mostly boring but had its moments and was relatively short. And a quick fuck you to Neil Young for making this harder to listen to than it should have been. 6/10

No real strong memorable groove or chorus here as far as I could find. Lots of great instrumental performances, and good (though melodically ramble-y) vocal stuff. Ultimately a bit boring though more listens may make a difference there.

I wasn't really sure where this album was going on the first listen by the end I started to get into it. Second listen I was still a offput by Music Is Love but I really like Song with No Words (Tree with No Leaves).

Pretty standard csny sound

Very pretty album full of harmonies. Pretty much felt like a normal CSNY album to me, with lower lows and lower highs.

A delightful slice of Crosby

I was surprised that David Cosby had such a bland voice back in 1971. The best tracks, IMO, are the ones where he and his guests harmonize over a folk-jazz background, preferably without lyrics. The last two instrumentals are interesting & Gerry Garcia's guitar contributions give those songs a boost. As Lester Bangs said, this is good music to digest food to.

No me ha llamado la atención

As much as I admired the songwriting, with so many albums in this list featuring members of CSNY, Joni Mitchell, Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane it was hard to see the distinctive, unique element in this (not quite) solo album. CSNY fatigue.

Crosby of the Byrds collaborates with members of Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Santana, Joni Mitchell, Graham Nash, and Neil Young to create his own jammy folk rock album. I prefer Crosby's voice when it sounds like CSNY. It's cool when it's rustic as in "Cowboy Movie" or "Laughing" but it's not as soothing as the other tracks. With so many collaborations, we have so many different instrumental styles. Some work, some don't. Some jazzy, some jangly, some psychedelic. But most of it is really good. Weak start, weak end, but they all interest me at least some way. Favorites: Cowboy Movie, Tampalais High, Laughing, Traction in the Rain

Groovy

Not a huge David Crosby fan but this was alright.

It was weirder and more lush than I expected, but did also splurge put into unnecessary noodles at points. I am glad this album exists, but may not listen to it again.

This album has the disadvantage of me listening on a plane towards the end of day of travel. So the bar was high to dazzle me. I found the tracks on the album okay, but boring.

Very middle of the road. The last couple songs were rather dumb but everything else was somewhat enjoyable.

Crosby's first solo album after his run with Stills, Nash, and Young. Of course, he's not completely alone but it's just his name on the cover. It's a pretty laid-back album. Some of the most sleepy folk you'll ever hear. It's an enjoyable listen if you enjoy nice peaceful songs, but could get boring at times. I thought it was nice, with Crosby tapping into his thoughtful mind. Perhaps the last album of the 60's. Why are two of the songs pulled from Spotify? Turns out Neil Young wrote those two, so he had the rights to pull them when he took his ball and went elsewhere.

Okay album, somber, good lyrics, enjoyed the listen

Crosby has his place in the cannon of American music. I'm not sure his solo work represents his best work which I think was really more with CSNY. This album is puzzling for importance. Listenable, but nothing stands out from any other solo Crosby stuff, at least to me

Generally lacking the magic of Crosby, Stills, & Nash, just like the two Stephen Stills albums on the list. “Traction in the Rain” stood out, but not much else. “What Are Their Names” felt like a Neil Young/Grateful Dead song, which essentially it was.

Like David Crosby himself, this album is beautiful, erratic, comforting, and a disorganized mess all at the same time. Throw in his grief from his soulmate, Christine Hinton, dying a year earlier and copious hard drugs he used to numb the pain and we get this. An album with great harmony (Orleans). An album where only five songs have lyrics, as if the grief held back his ability to convey his thoughts. It’s not a great album, but it has quite a few great moments.

Better than Neil Young.

Very spacey but occasionally very dreamy and very beautiful

Slightly wet peace folk rock song that moves past pleasantly but with lo lasting memories. Harmless...A lot of Js have been smoked to this i bet

Bäst: "Traction In The Rain"

Meh, nada especial

I really liked this at the start, but it fell off a bit towards the end for me.

71 of 1001 David Crosby - If I Could Only Remember My Name... Favorite Track : Cowboy Movie Rating : 3/5 Not as much as I expected. The song I like best gave me Neil Young vibes.

Of course the similarity to Neil Young is unavoidable to note, but it feels less earnest and more pretentious than his former band mate, at least on this record. The heavy slog of the 70s is all over the sound and it kind of meanders too much. It's still a pleasant album to listen to, but there are far stronger albums doing the same that I'd pick before I'd get to this one.

Folk rock

This is a tough one, I really enjoyed most of it, specially Cowboy Movie, Tamlpais High and Song With No Words. The music was great, I find Crosby’s vocals to be a bit meh so I guess that’s why I enjoyed the one with no words so much. 3.5 stars I guess

Crotchety Old Cros deserves his legend status, along with that whole reputation of being difficult. His solo work is good, but obviously Crosby shined brightest with others. When they could stand to be in the same zip code as him. Despite being elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice (once for The Byrds, once for CSNY), I'm sure he went to his grave believing he also should have gone in as a solo artist. But this is really the only thing he released solo that had any sort of impact. This stiffed on initial release and it took years for anyone to reconsider it. Worthy of being on the list for sure, it just leaves you longing for the harmonies with The Byrds and Stills, Graham and Young. That feeling is amplified on the great tracks featuring Nash and Young, underscoring the fact that Crosby's voice was meant to blend with others.

Not my style, but listenable.

In a lot of ways this plays like a CSNY album, but looser. It's almost like David Crosby called all his friends over to jam and decided to record it without having a real cohesive plan for an album. Crosby has a really strong bench of players backing him up, with a who's who of San Francisco's best musicians, as well as Crosby's bandmates Neil Young and Graham Nash. My favorite part of the album may well be the incredible guitar work by Young, Jerry Garcia, Jorma Kaukonen and Crosby himself. The album is mildly jammy and meandering but reasonably concise, if that's possible. More than half the songs clock in under 5 minutes. That said, one of the best songs ("Cowboy Movie") is over 8 minutes long and I didn't even mind. The album is a chill, pleasant listen that still could have been stronger, given the level of talent involved. The 2 Neil Young songs aren't available on Spotify, but can easily be found on YouTube. Fave Songs: Laughing, Cowboy Movie, Tamalpais High (At About 3), Traction in the Rain

Some nice stuff on here but also a lot of meandering instrumentals

me gustó, igual tranqui. 7.5/10

Better than expected, some nice guitar work

He's like my third favorite member of CSNY. Still, it's solid folk music. I listened to it on my way home from work after a long day and almost fell asleep. Maybe that's more on me than it is on Dave.

First listen

In his late years, I would come to know David Crosby for his entertainingly ignorant tweets about contemporary music. But here, he’s rendered as another white guy with a guitar spewing hippie shit I don’t care about. On first passive listen it sounds pretty catchy too and might play as decent musical wallpaper, well played David Crosby.

I just listened to this and can't really remember any of it. Perhaps it was as memorable as David's name....

Hmm. Sounds a bit like Crosby, Stills and Nash. And the Byrds. And Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. And Neil Young. Quite a nice, cosy album.

Present to the ear, but nothing really stuck out. Couldn't remember a single track.

Wourth another lusten

Yeah lovely. Big CSNY fan so good to hear his solo stuff. RIP

Crosby chooses to use his voices as an instrument rather than concentrating on lyrics. It’s interesting to listen to but there is a lot on “bum da da da ooh ooh la la”s and I struggled to concentrate through the whole album

Chill vibes, for sure.

Good bit of variety

Quite good - some Grateful Dead style 60s/70s rock noodling and some beautiful CSNY folk rock melodies. Not bad.

I wanted to like this more than I do, not only for Crosby's vocals and legacy, but because musically speaking its right up my street. Even the collaboration list is stacked with fellow CSNY bandmates along with members of The Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane. Its musically pleasing and was a nice listen, but overall it feels more focused on jamming instead of song structure. Cowboy movie is an exception as it has room to breathe and go somewhere. Most of the songs on here are directionless and instead suited for the background of the backyard on a sunny day.

3 Sterren.

Good 70's groove

Some great Young vibes in there. A nice album I would probably revisit.

Spotifysta puuttui osa kappaleista, joten kuuntelin tämän kokonaisena Youtubesta. Rauhoittava.

Definitely not unpleasant music, but I really didn't care about it too much either. Just some old, background-listening folky pop rock.

good blues rock / country album

David Crosby's first solo album, made after the success of Crosby, Stills & Nash's debut album, and their first break up. He had a few other artists featured on this album as well such as Neil Young, Graham Nash, members of Jefferson Airplane, the Grateful Dead, Santana, and Joni Mitchell. There were some exploratory works on this album that felt unpolished, but were also some fantastic songs as well such as Cowboy Movie. That song is apparently loosely based on the temporary breakup of Crosby, Stills & Nash. In this song, the individual members of the band are given aliases; Stephen Stills is Eli, Graham Nash is the Duke, Neil Young is Young Billy, and David Crosby is Fat Albert. The other character in the story, Raven, is apparently Rita Coolridge, who in real life had affair with both Stills, and Nash, and caused the bad feelings between them, and led to the splitting of the band. The harp section in Traction in the Rain is great! The song Music is Love had symplistic lyrics, and is underwhelming. Overall, not a bad album, but nothing really stood out with it either. Favourite songs: Cowboy Movie, What Are Their Names, Traction in the Rain Least favourite songs: Music is Love, Orleans, I'd Swear There Was Somebody Here 3/5

Calm, relaxing, easy to listen to and jam along to music. It wouldn't be my first choice to listen to this often, but it was still enjoyable overall.

Not bad, but kind of forgot I was listening to it.

A pretty somber album. Not too bad overall

An unobjectionable album. I listened to it while going to sleep.

Aware of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young — but not of this solo record. Pretty good, but at times could've used some of those other names around.

Best Song: Cowboy Movie. Something about the way this is mixed makes the low-end sound incredible. It's as though the bass is strumming inside of my brain. The rest of the song almost falls away in the face of the deep rhythm of it. Honorable mention to: Song with No Words, which was also excellent. Worst Song: Orleans. I actually like the vocal melody, but I don't like the choice to play the vocals as a harmony. Just let Crosby sing it in a single voice. Overall: Excellent musicianship, where the playing felt impassioned and thoughtful. It's not in-your-face music, and everything has this kind of quiet timidity to it. The album also comes off the rails at the end, transitioning into what sounds like a sort of pseudo-religious offering. I'm here for the understated folk rock, gimme more of that.

Quite entertaining

Falls somewhere between Juno Hendrix’s rock edge, Pink Floyd’s atmospheric bluesiness, and CSNY’s harmonizing cheese. But not bad actually.

it's alright, nothing special

Great voice….just not my thing

Listened to on 8/1/22 3.5/5 Favorite song: Cowboy Movie This album was very chill and easy to listen to - nothing crazy or flashy about it. Slight western flare but easily backgrounded

Mellow and soulful offering. Slightly bluesy vocals.

Otro que toca oír en Tidal. Bonito y tranquilo. Me gustó "Music is Love" y "Laughing".

Ganske ok, men plagsomt at det ikkje ligg på spotify

The "...." in the album name is where he feel asleep. Great album to fall asleep to.

A couple of songs missing, but I liked what I did hear

Started really strong and it stays pleasant all the way through but some songs are sadly more uneventful than others.

Not a folk essential for me, but a very good album from a folk legend. The last 2 songs were completely unnecessary, but the rest is great.

This is the debut album from American singer-songwriter David Crosby. It's a folk rock album with a dash of psychedelia, that includes a long list of guest musicians from other rock music projects. The album has been certified gold in the US. It's interesting that only half of the ten tracks on this album have lyrics, while the other half are instrumentals. The music is harmonious without being overbearing; a tinge of country and blues intertwines with the primary sound of folk rock. The album would make for great background music to a dinner or drinks event. I recommend everyone gives this album a listen.

Niet zozeer mijn ding

No me ha llamado la atención

7th May 2022 Listened on the way to work, one of the rare albums not on Spotify! Met up with Ebbs and Ben in Clapham in the evening. Lovely album, sleepy country blues.

couple of decent tracks. I didn't hate it and only turned it off when it got to the french nonsense at the end so that's a bonus.

Not really outstanding. Don't know why this is a 1001 AYMHBYD. Still not bad (5/10). FT: Laughing, Cowboy Movie

Middle of the road for me.

It ends too soon before I got a sense of his/their style

♫ Everybody's saying music is looove ♫. » David Crosby venait d'envahir l'espace sonore.

Not bad, quite nice and tranquil. Perhaps a bit boring and weird ending.

Decent, but not great. Background music. Would rare a 3.5 if I could.

It was fine.

Rating: 5/10

First impressions are that this is a beautifully played album. The acoustic guitar is played tightly wound, the upright bass comes through adding depth to the recording. "Laughing" a clear favorite on streaming services, the aforementioned is delightfully demonstrated. Overall, even as a solo artist, Crosby cannot escape the connection to Crosby, Stills, (&) Nash & Young where comparisons are inevitably drawn, but where an ensemble of musicians may bicker over creative control we are instead made privy to Crosby the way Crosby would do it, and that is okay. He is backed by several guest musicians, all masters of their craft. The album is beautiful and it is definitely more on the laid back side of things, and certainly a recurring theme in recent days reviewing albums on this site. This album deserves a spot on the rotation, either on shuffle or for casual days.

Apparently, there are so much contributors in this album that David Crosby forgot his own name (what a terrible album name, even for a '70s album). So he looked up in the sky as the sunset paints it red, and at last... he now has a perfect album cover for his new album! (also a terrible album cover, it's hilariously corny). But despite the bad album name and cover (and also the personally bad vocals), it's actually a decent album that many elements (most of which are psychedelic licks) that tries to distance the sound from the stereotypical country music sounds. I enjoyed the psychedelic efforts in the first half, most notably the eight minute "Cowboy Movie". The second half is mostly chill and moody, a series of efforts that became boring from "Song with No Words" onwards. Overall, it's an easy listen. It has a few surprises (though I think it might be due to me underestimating it based on its name and cover).

I don't think it is a must have, not an etalon at all. Quite enjoyable but no more than average good music.

I didn't expect CSN, but the songs that hinted at that trio were the best on the album. Didn't add.

Good album, a little jazzy and fades into the background

Old people's music, hippies trying to make money but pretend they're not. Songs all sound the same, and only ok. Not for me; just sounds like so many other albums from that time.

Decent album, gets repetitive, but still enjoyable.

Classic American wistful-cowboy strumming. Better than I thought it might be.

Briefly very into CSN&Y and a general Woodstock phase in earl college years. Reflecting in this I realized that Woodstock 1999 was further back in my son’s relative history than actual Woodstock is in me, and I feel so so old.

Quite nice folk album.

Mellow, nice

If I Could Only Remember My Name by David Crosby (1971) In 2010, during the pontificate of Benedict XVI, the leading Roman Catholic periodical L’Osservatore Romano listed this record as #2 on “Top 10 Greatest Pop Albums of All Time”. That should get the attention of a few of the readers of these reviews. The PG-rated lyrics of the first two tracks (language, nudity, violence, sexual situations) present themes of charity and justice that land shakily on the right side of Catholic moral thought, however lacking they may be in poetic depth. The rest of the album is truth, peace, love—you know, hippie stuff. Heavy, man. Don’t Bogart; pass the joint. Musically, the album is sometimes excessively repetitive, but with nice improvisational flourishes from a wide range of rock superstars (Graham Nash, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Jerry Garcia, Grace Slick, and many others climbing on board the David Crosby train). Crosby comfortably dispenses with lyrics altogether on four of these nine tracks, revealing his true genius in composition, vocal harmony, and expansive instrumentation. His jazz-influenced melodies and chord structures are typical Crosby—one can readily identify other Crosby songs that have a doppelgänger on this record. That’s nice for reminiscence, but those familiar with his oeuvre would have appreciated a fresh palette. The traditional song “Orléans” is a missed opportunity for a canon perpetuus sung with really fine voices. See if you’re as disappointed as I was. The closing track “I’d Swear There Was Somebody Here” is too brief, but it gives a nice idea of the music that swirled in David Crosby’s head. It’s really beautiful, but one could do without the twang. The cover art is a nice photomontage suggestive of a joyful tear falling from the eye of the artist beholding beauty—reflections of a sunset over the sea. (Or is it a sunrise? You decide.) In sum, this album is good, but not great. L’Osservatore Romano is not, after all, infallible. I don’t believe Acta Apostolicae Sedis rates albums. Let me know if they ever do. 3/5

A little bland but not unpleasant.

Enjoyed it. Background

I didn't hate anything here and I liked the general vibe quite a lot. But nothing ever stood out and demanded a 4 star rating. So...

Not what I expected

Mood music. Very mellow. Jammy. I like it as background music, but when I focus on it, I seem to lose focus quickly. It's pleasant enough. Favorite tracks: "Cowboy Movies", "Song With No Words"

Harmonizations don’t get much better than Crosby

Enjoyable, great harmonies, but other than that, not very exciting. I don't think it deserved the critical panning it got upon its release, but It's not Crosby's best work. Again, perfectly enjoyable, very calming, just not terribly groundbreaking.

I think this album is fine, but it really dragged on for me. Every song kinda sounded the same, and after every song I would check to see how many more there were. Definitely good music for playing in the background, but it didn't grab me in any meaningful way 3/5

Good, i'd listen to this again.

Solid three stars for now, maybe upon further listens this can be a 4 star album.

Good album.

Enjoyable album, chilled out Americana, great harmonies.

Enjoyable if a little meandering towards the end.

Enjoyable, occasionally prescient ramble through the high desert. Ruminative as a sunrise over Monument Valley.

Fun bluesy vibes, almost psychadelic at times. Very nice.

Jingly jangly

some pretty parts. merp

that unmistakable CSNY sound

Very mellow, enjoyable ***

Atmospheric album. Didn't really know this one, besides from Deja Vu.

A fair album. Not really worth coming back to for another listen. Folk rock but just not that exceptionally good.

good album. Some very familiar sounds heard on other great albums.

Pretty good, a nice feel to it all the way through. Very California sounding

I generally like this album, there area few good guitar licks. though i cant say i will ever listen to it again

It's very nice to listen to something like Neil Young that is not Neil Young. I don't want to reduce Crosby's career to be some type of Young cover or anything like that, but I'm comparing their importance for USA's music. This album is good enough to show this importance but it's not the best work in my opinion.

Chill kitchen folky vibes

Great start, but trails away in the second half. Some very Led Zeppelin 12 string guitar sounds. A few more stars on the cards by void’n those later dull tracks

Enjoyed it, good album, hadn't heard any of his stuff before.

Je reconnais bien david crosby. , certaines chanson be font penser a crosby still nash and young. Particulierement, almost cut my hair sur deja vu .3.5

Pretty good folk stuff. Not my kind of music, but certainly listenable.

The album is really good, I like it a lot. "Music is Love" is great. "Cowboy Movie" sounds like a dead song (and is over 8 minutes long, lol). David Crosby was a member of the Byrds. In 68 he was asked to leave the band, and he formed a supergroup (Crosby, Stills, and Nash) with Stephen Stills and Graham Nash. Neil Young also joined them on and off. This is the debut album of Crosby as a solo act. He has a ton of guest appearances including Jerry Garcia, Nash, Young, Joni Mitchell, Jefferson Airplane, and Santana.

Not my cup of tea but I can see why people like it - makes me wonder about Laurel Canyon in the 70s. Some great guitar playing and fun to hear Neil Young in there - great album title.

It’s good background music but just lacks an engagement for me. Miss the harmonies that made CSNY so great. While talented, these quiet guitar licks don’t do it for me.

It's fine.

Very chill

First thought was "is this country?" "Oh it's more folk I suppose". I know the name David Crosby but don't know his music. I like Cowboy Movie, some nice energy here. Then I didn't enjoy the rest as much. Not bad, but nothing that jumped out for me.

Good album solid songs though some are a bit repetitive and annoying at times

Good stuff!

"Music is love" was nice. But nothing too standout on a first listen.

Definitely missing Stills, Nash, and Young

It's alright

Half a record with the Dead, a quarter with his CSN&Y mates, and random guests from around the whole scene...sure must’ve been a time! It’s short, yet still feels long. My musical tastes do trend towards psychedelia and such, so I have some patience for this, but it’s just not my thing. Too much of a square!

i like the cover

is he susposed to be crying that sunset?

If only I could remember a song off of this album.... heh 😏

One extra star for some interesting guitar work, but otherwise this is just hippie nonsense.

Not my jam

Wasnt hugely into this one tbh

Most of this album just didn’t hook me that much although there were a few good ones. Not enough to justify more than 2 stars unfortunately

whatever, man.

This was better than I expected, but I still didn't love it. I got distracted and wasn't able to finish it -- which isn't a good sign.

This is "Dad Rock" in the sense that it's like your dad sitting in a chair in his garage strumming up some tunes he made up off of the top of his head. I was waiting for the album to start the whole time, but it was just strumming the whole way through. Given the talent throughout the making of this album, I find it quite disappointing. Favorite Track: "Music Is Love".

Just another example that 1971 was a bad year for music. My own ratings has 1971 on average 5/10. Other years average is just over 6/10. This is boring and bland but at least it was only 39 minutes long.

No way anyone listened to this who didn't smoke WAY too much weed.

Like a more boring Neil Young.

I'm still not sure what arcane knowledge this list is expecting us to divine from listening to every album ever recorded by a member of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. A surprisingly slight and unmemorable album, given all the artists contributing.

This was occasionally fine - the harmonies on 'Orleans' & a few other songs made me realize what must have been an inspiration for Fleet Foxes. The bluesy jamming on 'Cowboy Movie' is decent. But the whole thing feels half-thought out - song ideas and jamming vs a cohesive, structured album. Might have been a 3 if I'd gotten this 400 albums ago, but going with a 2 for today. Melissa Etheridge should be embarrassed.

Getting a lot of albums from the 70's and earlier in the past few days. Similar to a lot of folk and rock from these decades, it didn't really grab me. I liked some of the songs (the brisk half an hour runtime is a point in it's favour) but the album's weighed down by my personal indifference to this period of music. Maybe that'll change in the future as I go through the list! Even though the album is good in a purely musical sense, it wasn't for me I guess.

There was good stuff here, but so many of these songs went on and on and didn't go anywhere and tended to bore me. This wasn't bad, but not great. The guitar playing is really good tho. Actual rating...2.5 Liked Songs: "Cowboy Movie" , "Laughing" , "Song with No Words (Tree with No Leaves)"

mmm no es mi estilo

Not sure I get this one, it's like a mid Neil Young album. It probably should be a 3/5 because overall it was a pleasant listen, but the lack of high points reduces it to a 2

This album is solid evidence that not all solo projects from big name bands are worth them being made. Even with all of the guest stars, I'm not sure what they bring to the table on this one and it certainly doesn't show up in the finished project. 2.5 stars, rounded down because of my disappointment.

I was disappointed. I was expecting more of a CSN&Y. This was a bit dull. I lost interest

Noodly nonsense

Ok album. Standout song: What are their names

Typisk rockkritikerplatta. En svag tvåa alltså.

For a man who spent a lot of time off his head, this was not what I was expecting.
