'Keep The Streets Empty For Me' is excellent. Good album, very listenable. 3 / 5 stars.
I appreciate her artistic vision and she definitely has her very own sound, aesthetic and everything. Love her voice, too. But overall, this is just too dark for me and it's a matter of being equally unaccessible (to a point) and me not wanting to actually enter any further.

While I wasn't a huge fan of the vocals, I did like the instrumentals enough to appreciate the whole effort as a more accessible kind of Björk-lite. Found myself hitting a groove after some initial distaste up front, and I think would be okay coming back for another listen if the circumstances were right. I know Ray gets a bit more experimental and out there on his later releases, and this was a good stepping stone to checking those out.
Fever Ray is singular. They're such a bizarre person, super psychedelic and weird and tribal, absolutely immersive music. I'd never heard their debut, and I'm so glad it got suggested. Hypnotic shit.

This was an unexpected and delightful surprise, because when I saw the artist name, my brain mixed it up with, “Sugar Ray.” This is nothing like Sugar Ray. The album is rich with atmosphere and kept me engaged the entire time. The track, Keep the Streets Empty for Me, was hauntingly familiar, and it painted a montage in my mind of an IRA cell preparing to strike, hoping to avoid collateral damage, and fully expecting they might not come back. I picture Sean Bean as one of the soldiers in their ranks, so their prospects are not good. That track also marks a shift in the tone of the album. The remaining three tracks strike me as a requiem or sorts, as opposed to the subdued energy of the first 2/3 of the album. I will definitely be listening to this album again!
This was perfectly fine background music while I was working, but it didn't grab me in any way. 2.5.
The early tracks had me thinking I could really get into this, but by the end I think I wanted to like it more than I did. Worth another listen or two at least.
It is interested and beautiful, but I don't think my life is any better having known it. +1 point for a cover of Nick Cave's STRANGER THAN KINDNESS.

It's funny to look at the reviews others have left because I have been on both sides of this one. First I thought it was boring as hell, now I quite enjoy it. 3rd Listen. Third time is a charm, because the first couple times I heard it I was unimpressed. This time I really got it and enjoyed it. Can't wait to hear more of it. 3.5/5

I was really into The Knife - Deep Cuts record a few years back, but sadly this record largely washed over me without anything really standing out at all. Karin's vocals started to grate on me fairly early on, which didn't help.

Couple of duff tracks but on the whole I loved this & it's got better on a second play (apart from the couple of duffers!).
A spooky and ethereal electronic record. I really loved the dark and brooding vibe this had. Obviously some Björk parallels to be drawn here, for better or for worse, but personally I loved this. Reading some of the other reviews, I see that "If I Had a Heart" was featured as the opening theme to Vikings, and even though I've not watched it, I can see it. One of my musical obsessions lately has been experimental folk with a Nordic vibe, like Heilung's work. That's probably why I like this so much. Overall this is a very good album I'd never heard before. Thanks for the introduction, generator! Favourite: If I Had a Heart

A hilarious shit-tier Peter Gabriel wannabe project. Whiny nasal-sounding little kids singing terrible lyrics is sped up and/or slowed down and dubbed over B-side instrumental passages. It's laughable, annoying and abysmal on every level. Couldn't even finish listening to it.
Excellent album, just the type of overlooked project I was hoping would be on this list.

Door mijn liefde voor Xavier Dolan en The Knife was ik zeer aangenaam verrast dat Fever Ray in de lijst staat. Ik zet niet snel een heel album op, maar het is wel heel sfeervol en eigen. Eigenlijk 3,5*, maar naar boven afgerond.

This is good - maybe not the best electronic album out there, and devoid of any catchy tunes; but some tracks are really great (some, on the other hand are a bit weired). If I Had A Heart is probably the most well-known song, as it was the Vikings opening tune. 3/5
If one of my mates had made this album I'd think it was great. Being presented it I feel it sounds like something one of my mates would make.

I loved this weird norse viking invader music. I know the female lead vocalist from some other project and I've been trying to put my finger on it since the second I heard her sing on this album. I basically loved this weird awesome and sparse album. Totally enjoyable and weird.

Before her debut as Fever Ray, Karin Dreijer was one half of the electronic duo The Knife. Their big claim to fame was the 2002 song "Heartbeats," which was covered soon after by José González. Both versions are amazing and memorable songs. Unfortunately, nothing on "Fever Ray" is quite so memorable. A lot of it feels like a Björk wanna-be. Out of the 8 albums from 2009 that have appeared on the 1001, half have been cut. For one, it again annoys that only 21st-century stuff ever gets removed. But second, here are some 2009 albums that I prefer and would rather got the shine... Neko Case - "Middle Cyclone" St. Vincent - "Actor" Phoenix - "Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix" Florence and the Machine - "Lungs" Mumford and Sons - "Sigh No More" Passion Pit - "Manners" Decemberists - "Hazards of Love" And go check out any version of "Heartbeats" if you don't know it.

This one is right on the threshold between a 3 and a 2. It was fine, but I just forgot about it very quickly.
I was actually expecting a cool blast of Swedish electronic pop from one half of The Knife so I was quite surprised by the rather slow and minimal approach taken here. Not that it is a bad thing at all, there is evidence that it is being used to substantial effect. Good way to have a fever, I guess. Favorites: When I Grow Up, Dry and Dusty, Seven, Triangle Walks, Concrete Walls, Now's the Only Time I Know.

I’ve never heard of Fever Ray (or The Knives, which seems to be the main band for this artist). This album artwork looks pretty great though! I have fairly high expectations just from the artwork. I want to like an artist that can produce something like that! Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Seven, If I Had A Heart, I’m Not Done This album was pretty fantastic. It sounds like what I wanted Björk to sound like when I first listened to her: trippy and weird, but still catchy. I loved the minimalist beats here, with the music mostly being led by the synths rather that a big bass drum. The vocals were primal at times, utilising pitch shifting software to sing high notes as well as demonic lows. I don’t often like much electronic music, and even less experimental, but this was a big hit for me.

Not sure how exactly to put this rating into words... Suffice to say that I like it more than the 4s lol. It's got a dark and kinda unsettling vibe you just won't get outside of The Knife or maybe Joy Division, and I really freakin' dig it. Not gonna be for everyone obviously, but I do find it truly singular.

Caution: Do not listen to this whilst enjoying a meal or snack. It's just disgusting how many mouth noises are front and center in the vocals. Every click of the tongue, half swallow, saliva shift, etc. is right there in your ears. It's such a weird mixing choice to keep that in there and produce those sounds so prominently. ASMR to the 1000th degree - but gross. Mouth sounds aside, the beats and movement in the songs are good. It feels like a Bjork album and sounds like one too. I do like the instrumentation especially Triangle Walks, but mostly, this album is annoying.
Wasn’t aware of this album, but having watched the tv series Vikings I recognised the first song instantly. Enjoyed this more than I expected and did recognise a few off the album. Good album deserves its place on the list.

It's nice to have some newer music too I think? I feel like I will probably listen to this again. I'm sad that the artist is so bizarre, but who isn't really?
This was a little too weird for me I think. Perhaps more listens would change that but not sure I want to invest time into this album. Creepy and uncomfortable would be my takeaways from this. And I don't even want to give the artist's styling the time of day...
This album was a complete waste of time. This hardly registers as music to me. The vocals are what prevents it from feeling like a repetitive mess, but the vocals are also the weakest part of each song. Just bad all around. Favorite track: Coconut

So this was interesting and there was some really good stuff in there. Musically, it was enjoyable and different. I would have enjoyed this a lot more if their voices were better.
Right off the bat I'm like I LOVE THIS, midway through the song I realize I've been listening to this for 5 years. It's the intro to Vikings. Can't wait to dig further. OK finished the album and I'm on my second listen. Loved it. Maybe the best thing I've discovered doing this.

Fever Ray of The Knife presents a solo darkwave record, characterized by eery vocals (reminds me of Bjork) and cave-like electronic ambiance with hard beats and polished production that sound similar to the works of later electropop artists, particularly Lorde. It's a cool coherent experience that I'll mostly revisit for the dark ambience, but suffers quite a bit from repetition, with many tracks merging together. Favorites: Seven, Triangle Walks, Now's The Only Time I Know

This album was ok had some good songs and some interesting ones. I really like Triangle Walks, I’ve listened to that song before. When I grow up was also good. I like the singers previous group as well The Knife, check out Heartbeats on the album Deep Cuts.

I’ve never heard of Fever Ray, but the cover seemed cool, so I was intrigued! This album is very ethereal, and I can just imagine sitting in the forest, meditating to it. After reading some info on Fever Ray, most reviews describe it as “creepy”, and “dark”, but I didn’t find that. Afterwards, when I actually saw screenshots of music videos, I can see where the creep factor comes from, and am actually eager to listen again after watching the videos and reading the lyrics-I think my view will change hahaha. Very interesting electronic sound, worth listening to again. Score: 80 Album art: 70 This album sounds like an artist in the 80s died and came back as a ghost to record in 2009. Its ethereal and calming, subtle and reserved. If you like the soundtrack to donkey kong country 2 or John carpenter's film scores you will like this. The production is superb and the various vocal effects are interesting. I liked every song but I think concrete walls is easily my favorite. That track is perfect. The album rewards your patience as I feel like it gets better the more it goes on.
I don't understand what is happening in this album. Love the cool Donkey Kong Country/Glover/N64 sound. It's haunting and spooky and reminds me of older video game soundtracks. Sadly, I can't stand most of her singing, mostly screeching and whiny. Also, the lyrics are kind of odd and out there, not sure what she is trying to say. People like the first track, I couldn't get over the lip smacking. I'm giving it a 3 because of the instrumentals alone, they are really that good.

This was okay. Not bad, but not a standout either. Some songs could definitely be shorter, as is constantly the case with electronica, but this is better than a lot of electronica albums I've gotten. I think the first half was stronger than the second half. My favourite song was If I Had A Heart.
I can see the appeal if you’re into electronic music with a purely atmospheric purpose. The downtempo beats and ethereal vocals match with the restrained electronic elements to create a haunting and unique atmosphere but it’s definitely not for me.

This is not my thing, and her voice is often irritating to me. But I always liked the opening track as the "Vikings" theme.
I had heard of The Knife before but was under the impression they were a sort of Euro-dance group so I was a little apprehensive about this. But I was wrong, and very pleasantly surprised! This album was great. Incredible synth work, and great vocals too. Karin Dreijer's vocal style seems to owe a debt to Bjork but in some ways I like it more here on this album. While this isn't quite a 5 star album for me it is at least good enough that I wanted to listen to it again the same day.

I listened to The Knife a lot but never got into this album. Very chill and cool.
This had quite an interesting droning effect. I don't mean that as a negative, but it did tend to lull me to a trance while I was driving, which at the worst is dangerous. Interesting sounds, interesting vocals, and the use of "dishwasher tablets" as a lyric were plusses. However, I also don't see myself playing this one again.
I was really digging this sound, but then the tracks started to blur together and it didn't quite keep me so interested. I may try again sometime, because the like that I felt at first was strong.

I kind of liked this stark kind of electronic music. Would be perfect for trekking across some featureless landscape. Some interesting lyrics. Although its bleak nature made it a little tough to fully love or listen to often. But at certain moments it could be perfect.
Actually really enjoyed this, despite it being electronic! It was probably the vocals, they provided an ethereal, haunting quality to the songs.
Making the “we have Björk at home” joke might be going a bit too far here-some tracks have an almost sinister air that’s appealing. But Fever Ray is similar enough to Iceland’s biggest musical export that one comes away feeling disappointed for what could have been.

interesting electronic indie pop with vocals, predictable, easy to listen to, not super adventurous or interesting, but very easy to listen to. Very dark, minor, bassy sound to all of the tunes on the album.
I've never heard of the Knife or Fever Ray and I absolutely love their non-cheesy, unique, and exciting electro pop music. This album, which is an introduction to their music for me, is very interesting and exciting! I love their type of voice which I would compare to Robyn, Christine and the Queens, Bjork, M.I.A. and many other musical giants. Not sure how I've missed this artist completely but I really like the magical fairytale feel of this album. It feels like an adventure. I'm interested to listen to more of their albums now.

A very well done electronic pop album. This was referred to by a critic somewhere as a “singer-songwriter” electronic album and I agree with that. It seems very personal, as though in conversation with the singer but thoughtful enough to be understood by the listener for themselves. I enjoy the use of vocal effects to create the different voices for the songs, as well as the use of synthesis.
I like it, its very unique and very cohesive. I guess my only gripe would be lack of dynamics, it is a pretty steady presentation without ups and downs, all very similar songs. But I like those songs, and I feel more well-rounded for knowing this music. 3.5 rounding up

Not re-listening, but this is one of the best albums of this era with a unique, genre-bending sound which I’ve always loved

Started of interesting then just didn't evolve. Got bored.
It's too incongruous. Chanting, melodic, low energy. Dead air.
I really really got into this. The brooding electronic rhythm and beats are perfectly matched for the bjork-esque vocals. Triangle Walks and Keep the Streets Empty are really strong, though the whole album keeps that vibe and hits for me.
Another installment in the electronic music genre that I like. Thanks to this project, I've heard more electronic music than ever before, and I've learned there is a lot of music in this style and genre that I like. That's fantastic!
This is another good record, but another example that this list probably needs to be updated. Not sure that I would rank this anywhere near a top 1000 to hear before one dies
This album got away with highway robbery getting on to this list. I'm sure this is supposed to be a transformative exotic album, but it's mostly pretty cringy.
But boring. Little bit gothic with electronics, but thankfully not nine inch nails!

It's an interesting listen, but I don't know that it's one I'll revisit. This album contains some interesting sounds, textures, and some good songs, but it isn't particularly memorable to me.
Never heard of them or this album before. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. It definitely will take me more time to make an honest judgment on it. For now, it's a solid 2.5/5.

While not as bad as most electronica, it still wasn’t that enjoyable
The name of the album has conspiracy theory vibes and the cover is like a Unabomber woodcut. My interest is piqued. I have to admit to being pleasantly surprised. I like the music quite a bit. The vocals are like a less annoying Bjork. I didn't listen all that intently to to the lyrics I just enjoyed the overall vibe. 3.5 stars.
Quite a lo-fi electronica album that almost leans into ambient sound territory. Lots of understated drum beats that permeate throughout the album, whilst unchanging in tempo, acts like a heartbeat for the self-titled debut. I genuinely enjoyed this one. From the get go it had me intrigued and caught in this subtle trance. It held my interest throughout, holding this haunting aesthetic both in music and vocals, but never felt gimmicky. Added to my music library. A very welcome surprise indeed.

Loved this album! I wasn't expecting the Vikings theme song to kick off an album on this list, but it is a good song...you never know.
Loved the sound, hated the vocals. I know that the main person thinks this is the sound of honesty and that this is them or whatever, but just stop and realize how good the music you're doing this over is. Got grating but thankfully the music keeps me invested in the album completely, nothing sounds quite like it. A worthwhile listen, even if a little grating after a while. A decent record.
Love The Knife. Never knew about this solo project. (2 Swedish albums in a row!?) I like it. More mellow and experimental than The Knife's club-ier beats. Reminds me of Björk projects that came before at times and XX/Beach House albums that came after at other times. Also worth mentioning that this just predates the Johnny Jewel, Drive OST synth-pop phenomenon. Feels like it was likely an influential record. Either way it is a very cool project that I can just sort of get lost in. I especially love the more ambient, languid pieces like "Seven," "Triangle Walks," and, especially, "Coconut." Those tracks really resonate as the leg-stretching work of an artist otherwise known for their dance music.
This album had me at When I grow up I want to be a forester Run through the moss on high heels This was a very pleasant listen as I worked on a late night job application. Some songs that were easy to get lost in, but none that floored me.
Agh, I've been fretting over whether to give this a 3 or a 4 all day! I listened to this album religiously in college, and I'm drawn to it for the same basic reasons: very striking artistic vision, anachronistic production (the new age synths, sequencing, processed vocals, with a few clean guitars in there), creepy lyrics and vocal delivery. In essence, everything a girl could want. I'm just a little hung up on some of the lyrics. There are some really mysterious, stunning lines, but some just feel either repetitive, or others obfuscatory. But overall, I want to reward albums that feel confident and out of time, and this one really feels that way.
Fever Ray caught me completely by surprise. What a completely unique sound! Now this is an artist that knows the joys and wonders of the Voice Live, am I right? About half the tracks use that deep, haunting vocal and half use an almost Tegan and Sarah-like crone. I love all the mouth sounds in “If I had a Heart.” It makes me as uncomfortable as the subject: greed, lust, power. Concrete Walls is insane. Really insane. I think the subject is psychosis. Or maybe its from the perspective of a cockroach. Either way, the synths are haunting and the percussion is infectious. Keep The Streets Empty for Me is deeply unsettling. There’s something very un-human-like about this song: “I’m laying down, eating snow. My fur is hot, my tongue is cold. On a bed of spider web, I think of how to change myself.” Weird and brilliant artists are coming out of Sweden. This album reminds me of an incredibly disturbing Swedish fantasy film “Border” which is about trolls. I am shook. 4/5.
Hmm what to say about this one? It suffered from a common problem I’ve had with the albums on this list: it would be better either instrumental or with a different vocalist. The music was good, the singing was a turnoff. I like electronic music and I like some avant-garde music…but in not this combination of it. Reminded me a lot of Sigur Ros which I wasn’t a fan of.
Some synth-pop sounds that sounded okay, decent background/soundtrack music for my day. Nothing overly exciting or special for my tastes, but I didn't not enjoy it. Reminded me too much of Bjork, at times and ironically the first song to stream after the album was done was a Bjork song, go figure.
I like the song from Vikings because I used to like watching the series, but other than that I'd say this is a pretty ordinary album that's functional for background duties. And that's it.
Initially, it’s a very nice album in concept it’s like joy division but electronic the lower pitch vocals are raspy but cool/ unique but the higher pitch vocals are horrible like an unlistenable mix of Bjork’s and Alanis Morrisette’s worst vocal qualities (and I really, really like both of their singing) but this album is quite interesting to be honest just could’ve been better. And what a disappointment for day 200 less than half as good as my day 100 (court of the crimson kings) this is a 3/5.
Nothing special. The instrumentals are cool but the vocals leave a lot to be desired. This sort of electronic-pop had been done before so I’m not sure why this is included on the list. Again, not bad, but not great.

Go get some Heartbeats, my person. Go get some. Wait, this is a Fever Ray review? Fuck, ummmm… it is fine. Someone from this band is in the Knife. The first song is a bop.

4 Unique icy sound
This was enjoyable. I don't really know how to pin it. No track stands out a lot more than the others, Maybe Concrete Walls or If I Had a Heart. Nice textures throughout the record.
I liked it sounded like a dude wanted to make the Hotline Miami soundtrack in the style of Aphex Twin the vocals were consistently annoying but I really liked the production except for the one song that used the marimba I can’t hear the marimba without thinking of that shitty stock music every documentary uses solid 7/10

The first time I listened to this, I thought it was "When I Grow Old." That really changes the dynamic of the song, actually. The electronica in the music doesn't sound bad, but her vocals just seem so... dull. Even when she makes them lower on "Dry and Dusty." Listening to the last track, my boy asked "Coconut? Why would anyone do a song called Coconut?" So I had to put on Harry Nilsson's "Coconut," which is a better song. Bjork did some work remixing some of her tracks. I feel like she needs someone like that to do more work on this. There's a lot of experimentation, but there needs to be someone there to say "that sounds cool, but what if you did this to it...?" A voice to help her figure out what to DO with her ideas. Electronica otherwise just seems like... noodling. Pass.
This was ok - some good, some bad. I liked the droning, haunting sound of the opening track If I Had a Heart (later on Concrete Walls too). And then I realized that Fever Ray has an annoying voice by the second track When I Grow Up. When her vocals are more front and center (on about half the songs), the songs aren't as good and I struggled to enjoy the beats. Because of her voice and occasional strange beats, sometimes I wondered whether the album was meant to be a spoof - like a Will Ferrell EuroVision thing. The lyrics are also a bit too simple or everyday, not really making you think. All in all, another electronica album that is just meh.
At first I thought this was just 'ambient beats to study and chill to'. It is that, but also a lot more. It's atmospheric and detailed and rewards an active listen. Unexpectedly enjoyed it, atmospheric, good working album
A difficult one. I loved The Knife. This is clearly a more difficult record - cold and wintry where the Knife would occasionally use colour and warmth. But I feel like it would repay you for further listens - but I don't have time to test this in a day! I'll be coming back to it.
Moody and unique. Sounds a lot like The Knife but also the same person so makes sense.
I listened to Fever Ray right off the back of Massive Attack's Protection and at some point I wasn't sure whether it was a continuation of the same record. Just as dull, 2/5.
Never heard of this before, but quite liked it. The overall sound is interesting, nice gentle electro atmosphere, quite low impact but just enough there to keep me listening. I saw MO at Glastonbury a couple of years ago and that felt very similar to this (albeit a bit more upbeat and with some extra oomph). Would I actually go out of my way to seek this out? Probably not, but it's a perfectly pleasant listen. 3/5

One of those albums that you hear the songs and go "Oh it's THEM!" - lovely spooky soundscapes that are so much more than scene setters for TV dramas. I'll be giving this another listen in late autumn, for sure.

This was... a weird album. The distortion on many of the songs was just disorienting and unpleasant. There was nothing on this album that really stood out or made me excited to listen to. Just wanted it to be over.
I really like this, musically really interesting, a lot of different world music themes being used. It's like a non-shitty Bjork.
Except for If I Had a Heart and Concrete Walls, I liked this record more than I expected. Which is not to say I liked it very much. It was somewhat interesting vocally.
I liked it. I'm glad it had vocals. The female singer added to the creepy/moody feel of the album. I'm not sure if this would be an everyday listen for me but i won't mind revisiting it.

This was the sound of the times in which is was released. Alarmingly quotidian lyrics delivered with a highly-stylized affect create a contrast with the futuristic electronic track reminiscent of Kraftwerk. See also/instead: Grimes, Santigold, Karen O.

Weird, not terrible and not what I expected at all
Kinda hypnotic sounds, well, they would be but I found the singers voice to grate on me after a while. I appreciate it but it’s just not music that I would listen to, unless I was like invoking spirits or trying to be mysterious.

I'm not sure if I liked this or not. It's an interesting album, I find the whole thing intriguing really. It has an 80s gothy feeling to it, but doesn't sound dated or out of its time. I'll be looking further into this band. It was an enjoyable interesting listen.
This is a groove that I could stay in for hours. Unlike a lot of other electronic music, one can hop in that groove without even thinking about drugs. The second half tailed off which cost it a 5.
So dark and bleak. The synths bring everything together beautifully. The riffs are minimal and build nicely through each track with great attention paid to every note. It reminds me a bit of some of the below the radar tracks on early 80s Peter Gabriel albums. The songs are well-written and different enough to hold your interest for 50+ minutes. The lyrics are personal, murky and cryptic, full of references to snow and water and streams - like a winter in Sweden. A great album to listen to with Eraserhead running in the background. I didn’t love her use of synthesizers to get a deeper, male-voice, but hey, that was only in 2 or 3 songs and it was the thing twelve years ago, after all.
It was nice to recognize the theme to Vikings here. Scandinavian artists just seem to put out the most creative and different sounding albums and this one is certainly unique sounding. This has a Bjork vibe but much more accessible, I quite like it and will check out her former band Knife as well.

Cold electronics, bleak, industrial soundscapes, striking manipulated vocals. (I initially thought Fever Ray was a man to begin with). Definitely interesting, but more of a terrifying listen than an enjoyable one.
I like it, but it doesn't excite me.
The beats are very much my thing but the vocal pitch shifting and modulation ruin like 1/2 the songs for me. I'm so into the spare electronic sound though that I can forgive the vocals. I'd definitely prefer to have an album by The Knife on this list in its place.
Strong Björk and Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith vibes. Definitely can appreciate the great instrumentals as well as the general vibe, I'm not a huge fan of the lower-pitched vocals here though, that's just a preference. Overall pretty nice!
