I liked this!! Long promised road and student demonstration time in particular but probs need to listen to more again tbh

This was really fantastic. So ahead of its time. Fav Track: Student Demonstration Time 8.4/10

Beach Boys har været en stor inspiration til mange af mine favorit musikere. Det er derfor heller ikke en overraskelse at jeg er vild med deres album Surf's Up.

Добротный спокойный альбом. 7 из 10.

This is too dark and heavy for The Beach Boys. I guess this is what you get when you cross The Beach Boys with psychedelic rock and the politics of the early 70s. It ends up being pretty good. Even the cheesy songs like A Day in the Life of a Tree work well enough. Til I Die and Surfs Up are the best of the bunch. And yes, Student Demonstration Time really is terrible.

So who was gonna tell me this was better than Pet Sounds?? 4.5/5

Based on the artwork, this might be the strangest death metal album I've ever listened to.

A good album with some messages that are still very relevant today, not all of the songs were terrific but they were all pretty good.

The Beach Boys' production quality is out of this world

This is an amazing, eclectic collection of sounds. Seems like the beach boys are of the other side of pet sounds. I feel like Ween listened to this album and got some inspiration. It's good, but is never think it was the beach boys. They are literally singing don't go near the water in the first song.

What a departure in sound! This was the Beach Boys reinvented, largely without Brian Wilson and it shows. If I didn’t know that it was a Beach Boys album I would have had no idea. I primarily know and love their early to mid-60s output, so this was wholly unexpected and certainly not unwelcome. There are a couple of songs that were dated stinkers even at release, so I teetered on a 4 or 5 on this.

Yes, it's uneven, and yes, the misses here miss wildly - I can't tell whether "Student Demonstration Time" is an earnest attempt at a Doors song or a parody. And the production and related turmoil swirling around the group is constantly evident here, for better and worse (I'd like to take this opportunity to point out that Van Dyke Parks remains a fart-sniffer of the highest order). But the meaning of the Beach Boys has always been, like the sport they represented but mostly didn't actually practice, in moments of transcendence, and those are present in spades here - all the more impressive for being carried out mostly in Brian Wilson's absence. And if there's such a thing as "hitting wildly" then "Feel Flows" does it.

The Beach Boys? Creators of my first 5, "Pet Sounds"? This is a pretty dark album cover for those guys, based on what we've heard so far. I didn't know they took a detour into activism. It starts off with a bop, though ('Don't Go Near the Water'), even though there's an unpleasant lil interlude. 'Long Promised Road' is basically a proto-'Tubthumping' (mixed with 'The Heart of the Matter' - which I like). Then comes an 'I Can't Help Myself' style boppin' PSA about feet*. Sure, OK! You haven't lost me yet! 'Disney Girls (1957)' was covered by Eurovision superstar Alexander Rybak! I found it a little boring otherwise, though. Not sure what to make of 'Student Demonstration Time' lyrically, but musically I don't love it. Bring back the songs about feet! 'Feel flows' is pretty good. ('Feet flows'?) I like the alliteration, but I could do without the flute interlude. 'Lookin' at Tomorrow (A Welfare Song)' is no good - the instruments overpower the vocals. But that guitar part is definitely in System of Down's 'Aerials', right??! Strong ending because I like System of a Down's Aerials. 'A Day in the Life of a Tree' is a delight. Very Magnetic Fieldsy. 'Til I Die' is OK, a little depressing. 'Surf's Up' is good; it's almost like a parody of a Beach Boys song, possibly somewhat intentionally. More good sounding lyrics, which is always of value. I had heard exactly none of these songs before, and it's no Pet Sounds, but it was a pretty good album. I didn't know they had it in 'em! Highlights: 'Long Promised Road', 'Surf's Up' *Wiki says:: Jardine explained, "It's cute, but come on ... for some reason Jack Rieley liked it too and said, 'It's got to be on the album. That's definitely an ecology song.' 'Ecology? A song about your feet?' It's personal ecology."

Album cover made me think this would be a lot darker than it was. Good album. Beach Boys intrigue the fuck out of me. Sonically interesting and shit. Last 4 songs bang

This is not your Dad's Beach Boys album. Quirky, socially conscious, punchy, different. Written while Brian Wilson was dipping hard into chemistry and dperession, so the rest of the band is trying to fill in. Nothing hooked me to bring me back to it, but it's weird enough to listen to again. My Rating: 4/5

4/5 The Beach Boys or the Blues-Rock Boys? - The social record isn't their forte, but it's refreshing to hear them step into the protest song space. - Interests in the environment, students, the marginalized, and others show up in these tracks. - The record was originally going to be called "Landlocked" and this album certainly feels like a surfer with cabin fever. It ain't your mama's Pet Sounds, but it's a fun tape nonetheless.

I liked it for what it is

The Beach Boys always surprise me. I guess the name always evoked a sense of pretty boy pop, but there’s layers.

This is actually my favorite Beach Boys album. I think Pets Sounds is overrated. I think Smile is good but goes on too long. This is just weird enough and unpopular enough that besides a greatest hits of their early stuff, really hits. That being said, it's not my favorite album of all time.

I had never heard most of this album (Disney Girls was one). I really enjoyed it. A very different, somber vibe from the Boys (much closer to Pet Sounds in tone than Surfin' Safari), which I think suits their strengths.

I went through this when Sean recommended Feel Flows a while back. Excellent song. The album has other bright spots - Long Promised Road, Surf’s Up - but overall hangs together a little less than PS or Today.

Album déjà réécouté pendant le week-end, une très belle découverte!

For a long time Pet Sounds was all I listened to of The Beach Boys. I think this was the album I listened to next several years later. A very different listen from a wearier sounding band. The title track and Feel Flows rank among their most beautiful songs.

As a teenager, the very first album I purchased with my own money was by The Beach Boys. That was the start of my appreciation of their music and this album was certainly on the list of their many albums I purchased over the years.

A weird fucking album. Luckily, I like weird fucking albums.

Best Track - "Long Promised Road"

Les Beach Boys souffrent d’avoir pondu un chef d’oeuvre avec Pet Sounds. Tout le reste en pâli. Pas contre j’ai bin apprécié quand même. Long promised road est excellente. Student demonstration time suprenante avec le son garage rock à mille lieux de surfin USA.

decent

Had never heard of this album or the songs on it. I liked them though and still think the beach boys are great

Previously rated: The Beach Boys Today! (4/5) Pet Sounds (4/5) ********************************* I don't think I've heard a single track on this album before. Some of the lyrics here are a bit too on the nose for me, and associating the Kent State shootings with what was originally a comedy song ("Riot in Cell Block No. 9") was kind of strange. However, I think it deserves another listen because there are some interesting things going on here. It doesn't have the standout tracks that Pet Sounds has, but a lot of what's here beats the filler tracks on that album.

Liked this more than I expected. Listened through to Pet Sounds after Brian Wilson died and couldn’t get into it. This was more Neil Young than barbershop quartet. Felt ahead of its time.

🗯 Cracked sunshine, innocence gone — but still gorgeous. This isn’t the same Beach Boys of Surfin’ Safari or even Pet Sounds. By 1971, the counterculture had burned bright and begun to collapse, and so had Brian Wilson. Surf’s Up feels like the wreckage and the beauty intertwined — lush harmonies, but with an unmistakable melancholy running through them. Tracks like ’Til I Die and A Day in the Life of a Tree ache with existential weight, while the title track (rescued from the abandoned Smile sessions) is nothing short of breathtaking, a hymn to lost utopias. Even the lighter cuts (Disney Girls, Long Promised Road) carry a wistfulness that makes the whole album feel haunted. It’s a late-era triumph, proof that The Beach Boys could still conjure magic while standing in the shadows of what they’d already done. Verdict: Excellent (a bruised beauty, less iconic than Pet Sounds but still deeply moving) For fans of: Brian Wilson, Smile-era fragments, melancholy wrapped in perfect harmony

Liked this more than I thought I would!

Beach Boys going psychodelic, I liked it, some weird moments

Solid Album, the vibe was goood. Will go back.

Really great album of top-notch early 70s psychedelia on top of its iconic cover. Blah blah blah Student Demonstration Time sucks.

'Toothpaste and soap will make / Our oceans a bubble bath / So let's avoid an ecological aftermath.' The Beach Boys weren't the only artists in '71 to bemoan ecological catastrophe: Marvin Gaye in fact did it more classically on 'Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology).' But no one did it as romantically or as heavenly as the grown-up and fed-up group once inclined to preach an all-is-good ethos on tracks like 'Surfin' U.S.A.' It's now Surf's Up and all is not good: 'But now my branches suffer / And my leaves don't offer / Poetry to men of song.' In good faith, I can't say this is on par w/ Pet Sounds, which in its own way is just as dark and daring as this one, but I applaud it for its originality and for its moments of unusual beauty, especially tracks 6-10.

This isn’t a bad album, not by a long shot, but when you set it against the full weight of the Beach Boys’ catalog, it doesn’t sit near the top for me. What is interesting is how much more inward and aware it feels compared to their sun-bleached early work. There’s a personal, almost confessional tone running through it, paired with a sharper social consciousness that you don’t always expect. It reads like a transitional record, a moment where they’re still carrying the harmonic DNA everyone knows, but bending it toward something more reflective, even uneasy. The commercial reception backed that up: it charted well, enough to show the public was still listening, but the material itself signals a band in the middle of an artistic pivot. Familiar, yet distinctly not; a break from the past without completely abandoning it.

also really good

Awesome songwriting and some beautiful mature sequencing. Wasnt quite sure what the picture was like so far after pet sounds.

Best track 'surf's up'

4 stars I was not familiar with this album at all. I was skeptical. Having only really listened to Pet Sounds all the way though and finding it somewhat overrated (but still good), I wasn’t sure a 70’s Beach Boys album would do much for me. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The album does contrast with expectations of The Beach Boys in a way I feel works. Starting with “Don’t go near the water” has this surreal experience that something is off. It ends up being pretty consistent. While the album does not include anything nearly as perfect as “Wouldn’t it be nice” or “God Only Knows,” I feel like the flow and pace work better than Pet Sounds. Who knew? It’s still not at all perfect. But I managed to enjoy it all the way through on multiple listens- even songs other complain about like “Student Demonstration Time” I found to be fun and effective. I felt like “Surf’s Up” felt a little out of place on the album, but it may be because I’m familiar with the Smile version having heard Brian Wilson Presents Smile years ago, and knowing how it was supposed to fit more within the flow of its original context. But it is still an interesting track and fits in the same kind of unexpected feeling of the rest of the album. This was a pleasant surprise.

I grew up with a Beach Boys Greatest Hits tape. I loved it. I still do. But that was almost the entirety of my knowledge of the Beach Boys. Then Almost Famous came out and introduced me to Feel Flows which became an instant favorite. But I still never looked into any other Beach Boys beyond what I knew to that point. The cover of Surf's Up doesn't look it would be anything related to fun and sun and surfing. It looks dark, ominous and brooding. And so it goes with the album - this isn't the polish pep I was expecting - even with the cover casting a shadow. Other than Student Demonstration Time - which catches my attention for being kind of ridiculous in a bad way - once I can separate myself from my summer sun expectations, this ends up being a pretty great record.

Є щось таке у музиці біч бойз, що важко артикулювати. Мені цікаво до них повертатись інколи, хоча не зовсім прям мій стиль.

There's something a bit uncanny about this record, like a couple going through a divorce putting on a rather convincing smile in public, through which you can only see the cracks when you already know they're there. But sometimes you've got to ease it with metrics like "cohesiveness" and "consistency", and simply realise that if 90% of these songs are pretty bangin', then that must mean it's a pretty bangin' album too.

Very good and cozy music

Best one yet. Buying this. That one occasion that Charles Manson and drugs had a good influence.

Overall, really enjoyed the album. Had a lot of great songs, especially Disney Girls and Surfs Up. There were a few weirder songs, but overall great.

Haven't listened to much of the Beach Boys, not at all what I expected. Fun, nice listen with some interesting effects going on.

listened to again great stuff

p234. 1971. 4 stars. Parts of this have not aged well, and several of the tracks stray into faux eco-hippy nonsense - but when it's good, its brilliant. It is 32 degrees in the UK, clear blue skies, and this is the almost perfect soundtrack to a lovely day.

Really surprised by this one. Had not listened to much beach boys beyond Pet Sounds and couldn’t believe how evolved their sound was. Seemed very ahead of their time

Very cool listen. Gotta respect when a band with the clout of The Beach Boys decides to try something new and undefined -- and, they do it well. I don't think it's perfect, but it's very unique and very solid. Fave songs: - Don't Go Near The Water - Long Promised Road - Take A Load Off Your Feet - Student Demonstration Time (side note: why does everyone hate this?? It's kind of a total vibe???) - Lookin' At Tomorrow - Surf's Up

I did not expect this type of sound from The Beach Boys it was interesting!

I was previously only familiar with their hits. This album showcases a lot more range and I found it really engaging.

This album subverted all my expectations for The Beach Boys. Everything I thought I knew about them no longer stands. Off of just knowing their hits I was prepared to hate this album, and wow was I pleasantly surprised. Awesome album with awesome songs, I didn’t know my beach brethren had this in them.

That was a great album although the feet song is weird.

Spécial spatial. Prod pleine de surprises. 3.75 étoiles

This is a bit of a revelation. I'm generally a Beach Boys skeptic but this is excellent. Only really knew Feel Flows before but but will need to revisit this

real enjoyable. paced well, short and sweet. had to remind myself it was the 70s.

Čakal som, že to bude horšie ale stále to znie dosť staro. Neboli tam zle pesničky a prizmurujem trochu oči lebo to není môj žáner.

Not as depressing as the album cover makes it seem, although it is most definitely a darker sound for The Beach Boys, I love the atmospheric spaces they make in the instrumentation along with the echoey vocals. It feels like music for walking along the beach at night, that half sort of peaceful/haunting vibe.

Loved this - different side to The Beach Boys, but reflects the changes music and culture went through in the 60s into the early 70s.

This really blindsided me. It's a big change from conventional Beach Boys sound, which doesn't completely work. It feels a bit insincere, as if they're trying to get with the times and grow out of their niche, but there are growing pains. It's an inconsistent and flawed record, but it is interesting. My favorite part was the last 3 tracks ("A Day in the Life of a Tree", "Til I Die", "Surf's Up") which are actually all the Brian Wilson-written songs on the record. I guess that goes to show that when I say I like the Beach Boys, I'm really saying I like Brian Wilson. I think the rest of the album needs to sink in for me, and will get better with re-listening. It sits around a 3 or 4 for me after one listen, so I will round up with the expectation it will grow on me.

Tremendo registro histórico. Mucho más psicodelico de lo que me esperaba, igual me gustó.

Really enjoyed it - I will have to listen to more beach boys

Tämä oli kyllä hyvä! Vaihtelevaa ja miellyttävää meininkiä koko levy!

I much prefer this album to the previous, kitschy “in their sound” Pet Sounds. This was simple, classic, and delightful.

Incredibly flawed in the first half (long promised road aside). Second half hits all the depressing highs.

I enjoyed this one, though I have to say that I'm looking forward to Pet Sounds as it's my favorite Beach Boys album. This one had a lot of tracks I'd never heard before, and they weren't all what you'd think of when you think of the Beach Boys. More somber and less sunshine sometimes. I also really like the album art. Standouts: Feel Flows, 'Til I Die, Surf's Up Rating: 3.75/5

This album was pretty good! I hadn't heard any of these songs before so it was nice to hear some new beach boys!

konczy to trzydniowa passe trzygwiazdkowa serdeczne gratulacje

This album is full of theatricality, which makes of it something great and a very diverse album. It is such an enjoyable album that catches you from start to begging. I have to admit it has impressed me.

This reminded me of the first time I heard Odessa by the Bee Gees, in that I had very specific expectations based on what I was used to from the band and was very wrong. This album title seemingly alludes to the era of surf pop being over (everyone loves a good pun). Despite being very different to my favourite Beach Boys albums, this does stand up on its own as a different type of good. It’s almost proggy, and way more intricate to those poppy surf bops.

A really unique and relaxing listen. Nice and low-key melodies while still mixing in some summery/teeny bop classic Beach Boys. Much more sophisticated and mature sound. Straightforward and generally unremarkable lyrics, but still fun to put on and close your eyes to. Top tracks: Don't Go Near The Water, Disney Girls (1957), 'Til I Die

Solidly good album overall. Enjoyed how Don't Go Near Water was an almost satirical take on their early work. Great harmonies throughout the whole record.

12/07/2025 Apparently I don't have an issue with the Beach Boys.

So I’m familiar with a lot of The Beach Boys work because they were one of my first memories of hearing and liking a band. My grandmother gave me a few best of cassettes and a golden oldies cd and that was my earliest memory of music. But that being said I never actually got into their actual studio albums cause I grew up WAY after their prime and compilation cds were everywhere. But my point is that this entire album I had never seen or heard before. The cover is so dark and gloomy, my immediate assumption was that this was from their branching out period where they strived to get psychedelic with their sound and I was so happy to be right. That first track “don’t go near the water” how have I never heard this/never been on one of their best of albums. The song subject matter is still relevant to this day, it’s kinda dark and gloomy, but it’s also so creative and with that wholesome BB charm. Honestly this whole album really blew me away. I assumed this era in their history was underwhelming or embarrassing cause music documentaries and album sales would make you think that The Beatles were just annihilating them and they are always pitted one another in “music textbooks”. But honestly this is equally good. The amount of talent and creativity is all over this super fun album. My only problems are as always I struggled with some of the slower songs, so there are just a few skips. And because it’s the BB and they have their super nostalgic and crystal clean harmonies, which I enjoy in all their pop hits, but for their “edgy” psychedelic album they should’ve taken risks with the vocals. Don’t try and sound like other bands, keep doing what your doing but maybe less falsetto harmonies. I think that would’ve added a cool dynamic to this album, but what do I know. But to end on a positive, this album did force me to dive deeper into their catalogue to find more gems like this album. Definitely go give this album a listen.

Fun synths, interesting lyrics. Liked track 3

This was my third Beach Boys album in a month, but all three were different enough to be interesting. The typical Beach Boys sound is here, but it's generally tempered compared to some of their earlier stuff. The environmental message was occasionally cloying but came from a good place.

This album is pretty great. 1001 album generator is giving me a much greater appreciation of the Beach Boys and their brilliance. Such rich, tangible and fully realised songs. This album is full of great, fun songs, a few that are just okay. I really love Disney girls, beautiful song, I’d even say it rivals Something by The Beatles. I really don’t like the way ‘Lookin’ at tomorrow” sounds, the production is very nauseating for some reason. What a great, weird cover too! Fav tracks - Don’t go near the water - Long Promised Road - Take a Load Off Your Feet - Disney Girls - Student demonstration time - Feel flows - A day in the life of a tree Worst track - Lookin’ at tomorrow

Wow... I'm NOT a Beach Boys fan but this sounds nothing like a Beach Boys album (until the final track Surf's Up). A ton of psych influence, overt social and environmental lyrics, more diverse and experimental sound. All fused with the solid studio magic perfected on Pet Sounds. I don't love it all but it was a very pleasant surprise.

80/100. Surf’s Up feels like The Beach Boys looking inward, not just musically, but emotionally. Musically, the album offers plenty of beauty. The harmonies are lush, and the arrangements often drift into dreamlike territory. Not every track holds the same emotional power, and some moments feel more like transition pieces than fully formed ideas.

9/1001 The Beach Boys - Surf's Up Heard Before? ❎ Revisit? ✅ Melancholic Beach Boys is the best version of the band. Here, it sounds like a warning of the hippie dream gone wrong. One or two dude here and there, but overall an excellent album.

Better than Coldplay

I liked this. Not entirely what I expected.

Beach Boys are woke???

Truly an album that grows on you with each passing listen, as Carl Wilson takes over during his brother’s decline. There’s hints of all sorts of genres to come, from yacht rock to indie folk, all encompassed in 10 tracks. And other than one absolute eye-roller, the music here is another step ahead of what anyone else did. Good album.

life-affirming pop music with one beyond obvious blemish

This is a bizarre mix of what people love about the Beach Boys while also being a victim of their desire to expand what they can do. A lot of the base songs sound pretty interesting but the way something is mixed or arranged is sometimes a detriment to something that is otherwise pretty cool. I was pretty shocked seeing this album cover, and that it was a Beach Boys album.

3.6 - First half all good, last 4 songs not so much

Prachtige harmonie. Ben maar tot de helft gekomen. Dusss een save for later

Weird fun but good!

A great album though I found the mix had the voice too high in it

today's the day I learned The Beach Boys had 17+ albums. lyrically it feels quite experimental and whimsical. I was not expecting some kind of an environmentalist rock record. it's strange. I can't really get into it but at the same time there is something intriguing about it that keeps pulling me back in. 3.5

Great album

Piaciuto più dell’album precedente

Overall: 8/10 The only reason this was on my radar at all is because of that incredibly depressing and beautiful album cover. It's so NOT Beach Boys that you can't help but be drawn to it. The music inside fits the cover surprisingly well, with this being a bit of a melancholic departure for these guys. Honestly, I'm surprised this album isn't more popular. It obviously isn't their best work but it's very artsy and shows that Brian (RIP) wasn't the only member of the band capable of making these types of artsy pop songs. I highly recommend it to any fans of The Beach Boys who want to hear something different from them. Fav Song: Take a Load Off Your Feet Least Fav Song: Student Demonstration Time

gemütlich

Yeah, this is a trippy album, an example of rock and roll music at the time. I thought it was good, though, and will listen to it again.

I was a Beatles girl so I never got super into the beach boys, but it they truly are the epitome of 60s psychedelic beach rock

very fun, though some songs had a similar concept

I like it 3.5 stars

Dobrej klidecek, prvne poslechnuto

so fun! didn't realize it was so different than their other popular songs

it was surprisingly really good. i didn’t know blues rock beach boys existed. i only know the a cappella ones

Pretty solid

I actually enjoyed this one more than the first one I listened to. This one sounded deeper musically and lyrically than that one.

The epitome of the phrase flawed masterpiece, this album sees the Boys getting serious about the issues. The relatively sparse vocal layering (by Beach Boys’ standards) of Carl Wilson’s production lets the songs breathe. When Brian pops up at the end with the title track, you kind of think, ‘Oh Brian, I wondered where you’d got to’.

I've never considered myself a fan of The Beach Boys, but I might have to start. I wasn't a huge fan of the first couple songs - 70s surf rock always sounds cheesy to me, but Disney Girls was surprisingly decent even though it doesn't really fit the era or genre, and while some parts of Student Demonstration Time were disappointing, the overall melody is super catchy and there are some awesome lyrics (especially "the pen is mightier than the sword, but no match for a gun"). After that, the album settled into mostly mellow psychedelic rock which was great, though nothing really stood out to me.

I've never heard of this album before; I kind of like it. It's a little different from what they usually sing.

8.5/10 The Beach Boys didn't disappoint with their first album on this list. R.I.P to Brian Wilson. Masterful songwriting and composition. This album provides great insight into the world we live in today, with lessons about taking care of our environment in songs like "Don't Go Near the Water" and "A Day In The Life of a Tree." We also get a bombastic track about the dangers of rioting in "Student Demonstration Time," my favorite track. All the while, it mixes in some songs to chill out with and navigate through life. There's only one dud on the album, "Lookin' At Tomorrow." Favorite Tracks: *Student Demonstration Time*, *Long Promised Road*, Don't Go Near the Water

How timely. RIP Brian Wilson. Although I definitely prefer Pet Sounds, I enjoyed this a lot, especially with the harmonies. 4/5

It's interesting...

R.I.P Brian Wilson Crazy coincidence to get this album the week of his passing though maybe the generator did that on purpose and it isn't a coincidence at all. Idk. Either way I'm happy to honor the legendary Brian Wilson by listening to this absolute classic. "Til I Die" hit extra hard... Love & Mercy 🌊🌴🍹🌺🏖️ Favorite track: Disney Girls

R.I.P. Brian Wilson

Its good, quite whimsical but definitely not my fave Beach Boysm

- one of those moments when you realize why critically acclaimed bands are critically acclaimed - brutal look at the state of things seventy years ago. life of a tree today just as bad. student demonstration time. god - good good album. so much depth to it - harmonies are so very good

beach boys met een geweten... blijft goed, ook met serieuzere teksten

Bizarre contrast between the name of the band, the album and the album cover itself. Beach Boys are a crazy band with some of the deepest and weirdest lore of any artist. Brian Wilson was a genius and the rest of the band was good as well unless they were Charles Manson or Mike Love. This album is a pretty good one, some very pleasant songs here along with some weird stuff like Student Demonstration Time. Not the very best album out there or even the best Beach Boys album of this era, but nice to listen to nonetheless.

Despite the name, this seems like the least-surfiest Beach Boys Album I’ve had so far. It verges on activism. They come out strong by protecting water, but pull their punches in “Student Demonstration Time”. I loved the grooves here though and the multiple genres they touch on. Their impact on future acts is evident here, as I hear Grizzly Bear and the Dirty Projectors.

The Beach Boys on acid.

This isn't your cleancut Beach Boys, this is your animal style fries Beach Boys. This album kicks ass. Listen to it until you get it.

Beach Boys, an American institution. Not their best album, but a different sound from their norm.

Might have even liked this more than pet sounds idk

Positivt överraskad, fina låtar o catchy melodier

Rest in peace to Brian Wilson. I wish this life had been kinder to him. What a legacy to leave behind. I hadn't heard this in full before and was surprised at how exploratory, weird, and dark it is. The Beach Boys do prog and it's pretty interesting, but the closing three tracks are the real kickers here. What a staggering closing run of songs. Could do without whatever Mike Love is up to on "Student Demonstration Time". The production is fine, but his vocals sound terrible and his, like, history report is embarrassing and feels insincere. Insincerity and Mike Love are often holding hands. Anyways, whatever about that guy. "Surf’s Up" steamrolled me.

A great, if not classic, album by this band. R.I.P. Brian Wilson.

already heard, good stuff

Dang, rest in peace. Brian Wilson absolutely shaped music to come.

Odd that this came up the day Brian Wilson died. It doesn’t evoke the same feelings for me as the earlier albums did. It feels a little all of the place, which I normally love. But I guess it’s hard when it’s just not hitting that classic mark for me. I also think that’s what makes it a fun journey. I’d never heard this album, so it’s a pretty amazing experience to hear them do something so unexpected consistently. The consensus is correct. Student Demonstration took me out of it completely. Otherwise, psychedelic Beach Boys making a 70s album.

Never heard this one! Very cool I think a 3.5 for me…

3.6 Interesting. The sound of a band clearly trying to reinvent itself, but doing it well. Opener sounds like classic beach boys but there's something different about it. Then it rapidly descends into a slightly sombre, proggish sound of a band that knows it has to move with times. Highlight is the closer, sums up the album quite well. Only gripe was student demonstration time. For some reason, it felt so out of place. Instantly skippable.

The Beach Boys have a varied history and sometimes too much emphasis get put on Pet Sounds, which admittedly is their most impressive release but they do have other excellent work in their catalog. Surf’s Up is a very strong release, with writing credits and lead vocals spread out, yea Student Demonstration gets some hate but I don’t even think it’s that bad. Bookended by two really strong tracks in Don’t go Near the Water and Surf’s Up, I really enjoyed this. 4 stars

Welcome everyone. Rip brian wilson. What a great crop of songs. Dude knew how to write some good music. Very very somber and very fitting 1001 album generator person. Its just good and varried. Its what you want. Its what you need. And its a nice send-off, in our time, for a brilliant music man.

Anything that shares DNA with Smile is ok in my book.

Solo me había escuchado el mítico y este me gusto

I was listening to this today unrelated to the challenge, because we got the news of Brian Wilson's death yesterday. The title track is one of the most beautiful pieces ever written. May one of the most gifted musicians to ever do it rest easy. (Also fuck Mike Love and Student Demonstration Song. A lot about him can be summed up by how stupid this song is.)

Beach Boys. What else can I see: "Don't Go Near The Water", "Student Demonstration Time", "Lookin' At Tomorrow", "and "A Day In The Life of a Tree".

Engrossing, very mature and interesting. A bit patchy.

I mean it’s alright

Dobbie

Brian Wilson died yesterday. This is an album I hadn't heard before. Not quite a 5 star album but right below it. I definitely could see myself revisiting this and more of their catalog.

Brian Wilson only lead the title song? Strange but really good. It was an awesome listen Rip Brian Wilson ❤️

Not the Beach Boys album I would have chosen, this was a revelation. Especially today. I can see why in 1971 this album was not well received. My young self would not have been impressed. Listening to this today, the songs sound fresh and relevant. Complex and Beautiful.

awww RIP Brian Wilson. Nice album.

Prefacing this by saying I love The Beach Boys and they are, in my opinion, the greatest American band of all time. Brian Wilson is a generational talent and a musical mind that will never be replicated. Dick sucking aside, this is a great record. It blends genres but keeps a lot of the harmonies and pop sensibilities that make The Beach Boys so fun to listen to. I hesitate to call this record more mature than some of their 60s records but maybe it’s more refined?? It’s less psychedelic and more structured maybe? Either way we are well past some of the wackiness of Pet Sounds and cherry picking a lot of what makes them so fun to listen to. Favorite tracks include Long Promised Road, Feel Flows, ‘Til I Die and Surf’s Up (a track recorded during the Smile sessions I’m pretty sure because it was the only one I’d heard before)

so much cooler than past albums, as much as i love all their music. instant classic. RIP Brian Wilson

Wow this was recommended on the day Brian Wilson died. Its a more mature sounding band, but it also seems thinner, the harmonies are not quite right. Still a great listen

Not my favorite genre but musicians are obviously skilled.

𝘚𝘶𝘳𝘧’𝘴 𝘜𝘱 isn’t sunshine and surfboards. It’s the quiet sound of California’s dream fading into introspection, melancholy, and maturity. Tracks like ’𝘛𝘪𝘭 𝘐 𝘋𝘪𝘦 and the haunting title song show a band far removed from their teenage image — reaching instead for something deeper, more fragile, and timeless. This is not the Beach Boys most people expect, but perhaps the one that mattered most. Brian Wilson’s genius is etched into every note of this record, even in his absence. His emotional fingerprints remain unmistakable: lush harmonies, heartbreaking arrangements, and the sense that music can say what words can’t. With his recent passing, albums like 𝘚𝘶𝘳𝘧’𝘴 𝘜𝘱 feel less like relics of the past and more like open windows into his beautiful, troubled mind. Rest easy, Brian. The waves you created will never stop reaching the shore.

The Beach Boys have been accused (by me) of recording the same song dozens of times. I stand by this accusation. However, I readily admit that I haven't ventured into the Beach Boys discography beyond Pet Sounds. This, I'm starting to think, was a mistake. This album showed me that giving the Beach Boys another chance might not be the worst idea in the world.

Am I the only person who likes Student Demonstration Time?

Estoy desconcertado. A primera escucha esperaba las clásicas melodías pero todo sonaba como depresivo?!?! Tuve que escucharlo 3 veces para entender de que se trataba y vaya, que camino por recorrer. Un gran álbum!

Great album with songs I hadn’t heard before. Very different sound from what you generally associate with The Beach Boys.

First real time listening to anything other than the main beach boy hits.

A lot drearier than Pet Sounds. I don't mind.

The most ominous beach boys album. Sometimes feels like an anti sunshine pop record. Very immersive.

Highlight Song/s: Don't Go Near The Water and Long Promised Road I got this album on the day Brian Wilson died; I thought that was kind of funny(not him dying per se,) but the mopey album cover and the album name alongside the sad news of his death. But then I found out shortly after it was scripted (which my opinion on was mixed.) Anyways this is my second Beach Boys album, last time was Pet Sounds (not a fan of) back in August apart from that I just listened to their hits like Good Vibrations, Surfin' U.S.A and I Get Around. So It's good to listen to them properly again. I like the melancholy on this album, it sounds like its the end of an era; very bittersweet. The fact that this album is when Brian Wilson was stepping back from a leadership role, makes it a bit heartbreaking. Godspeed Brian.

Brian Wilson's vocal harmonies age like fine wine. RIP.

Seems way too on the nose for this to be a coincidence, but I guess I’ll see if a number of other people got this album today. Or maybe multiple Beach Boys albums were sent out today. (The day after Brian Wilson’s death if someone reads this in the future for some reason) I never heard this one in its entirety and it’s so good. I saw Brian Wilson live in 2016 and he did the entirety of Pet Sounds. It was a great show and I did not take for granted I was in the presence of such an important figure.

Interesting that I got this the day after Brian Wilson passed away. I liked this so much more than I was expecting to. A lot of it is different than the Beach Boys typical sound, and the subject matter is so progressive and deep. I'm familiar with Pet Sounds of course, but I think I like this more.

One of the odder beach boys albums

I'd never heard of this one. It's a very well designed album. Good to listen to, like a prog album. Highly recommend with headphones.

Like many of us I’m listening to this the day after Brian Wilson’s passing and it’s a sad day for music history, RIP Brian Wilson. The Beach Boys for me had a very specific moment where they were great and this solidified that for me. Starting the record the first song was a huge mixed bag, certainly not “bad” but not very good either. The next three songs were actually quite good but they give off the vibe of trying really hard to remake that Beach Boys magic and falling just a little short, honestly that’s the vibe I get from the whole record, trying to recapture that sound they had in 65-66 and partially succeeding but falling just short. This whole record is a little odd in sound anyway. However easily the closest the record comes to touching that classic sound was “Til’ I Die” with wonderful harmonies that make a truly haunting song and the closing title track, that had been around since the Smile sessions. This album is an odd, “trying to recapture”, and kinda disjointed album, but as much as I’ve mentioned them attempting to remake that magic they largely come very close, despite its lulls the 2-4 tracks and especially the final 2 songs really make this one come together, I’ll give it a 3.5/5 that gets rounded up to a 4

Ironc that I get a Beach Boys one day after the death of Brian Wilson containing a asong called Until I die and that there's a song about Riots Anyway I didn't know a single song from this album but i liked it.

A far cry from the ubiquitous pop jangles of their early years. Really good, beautiful music.

A very sombre album compared to Beach Boy's other efforts. I love the darker atmosphere on this album i think they pull it off quite well. The songs are also really catchy and have some really good production attatched to them 8/10 Favourite: Surf's Up Least Favourite: A Day in the Life of a Tree

A lot of great songs on it. But Pet Sounds is still my favorite, 4 stars for Brian Wilson.

The melancholy is amazing here!

Love vocal harmonies in the back. RIP

Charming

Kam tatsächlich an dem Tag, an dem ich erfahren habe, dass Brian Wilson verstorben ist. Gutes Album.

bruv... i know that brian died yesterday but are you sure that its ok to give us this in memory of him? 6/12 is literally my fav's birthday and i need to be very happy. yes to keep my true identity a secret i'd like to call myself a Robyn fan. i mean, "Dancing On My Own" is such a banger. I especially like the david byrne collab version on SNL50 although ppl says that its shit asf cause they are all out of breath and other problems. its really fun. anyway back to surf's up. it makes me anxious. maybe its because im always anxious this week due to my finals. and there's some political messages. like, who the fuck cares about ocean except ppl that are associated with the surfing subculture? i think im becoming more tense and nervous than yesterday because of the bit of disturbing nature of this. maybe its because brian died and i cant see it in a objective way. anyway here's a 3.5. Please, take it. Also please don't adjust the algorithm to give us Pet Sounds tomorrow, dear site mod. we dont need a wake that lasts half a week long. give us some good old beatles, ok?

not my fav album from them, but still really really great stuff on here.

Different to anything Beach Boys I've heard before, still has the harmonies but they maybe aren't as prominent, it's a little trippier and more psychedelic. Overall enjoyable and worth another listen

RIP to Brian Wilson. Amazing album here. Just unbelievable experimentation and a change of sound that was great. Also Student Demonstration Time is a jam idc what people say. 8/10

I really like the sombre, laid-back sound. Discovering how The Beach Boys evolved beyond surf rock has been a highlight of the project for me.

Surprisingly good and I really liked it!

Fun weird album. It isn't pet sounds but it's still magical on its own terms.

Disney Girls and Day in the Life of a Tree

RIP brian wilson this my first beach boy. its pretty good.

First of all RIP. This album was really good

++*: Don't Go Near the Water ++: Long Promised Road, Take a Load Off Your Feet, Student Demonstration Time, Lookin' at Tomorrow (A Welfare Song), A Day in the Life of a Tree, Surf's Up +: Disney Girls (1957), Feel Flows, 'Til I Die 8,5/10

I was not expecting this, and it showed up the day after Brian Wilson passed. It's truly beautiful. The music of Student Demonstration is a bit cheesy, but it was well-timed given current events. Really a great album from front to back.

I’m giving The Beach Boys’ Surf’s Up a 4-star rating, mainly for its bold departure from their earlier surf music sound. The album’s musical aspects are truly enjoyable. However, I have mixed feelings about its social activism themes. Some lyrics come across as opportunistic and a bit sleazy, almost like reaching for low-hanging fruit. Despite this, I appreciate the album’s overall musical direction, which is why I’ve rounded my rating up from a 3.5 to 4 stars.

Sad to see the maker of such good music go :( 4/5

I’ve always liked The Beach Boys, but I never even heard of this album. Very confused at first because it doesn’t have much of any of that classic Beach Boys harmony. Part way through I got the vibe this is something Beck listened to as a kid. Once I was finally able to disconnect my expectations for a Beach Boys album from what this actually is, I rather liked it. Will most like listen again. Side note, this album dropped on me the day after Brian Wilson died. Weird.

Different from other Beach Boys albums I've heard

RIP Brian Wilson.

It’s no Pet Sounds, but there are some cool tracks. RIP Brian Wilson. He died yesterday! Can’t be a coincidence.

I think that it took Brian Wilson's death for me to really be able to properly get into The Beach Boys, and after having revisited a few of their albums today, I'm really starting to hear their music differently. Surf's Up is absolutely beautiful, being so short but managing to cover a lot of ground in that time. The classic sunshine pop that they are known for is of course still very present, but the slightly darker side of this album isn't afraid to show itself in moments that it fits in super well.

It was haunted in tone, in theme, and in timing. Not the surfy sunshine of old, but something heavier, more introspective. The sound of a genius drifting out to sea, one broken harmony at a time. Perfectly eerie for the day Brian Wilson left the planet.

Quite a stark contrast from what other albums sound like. Great album nonetheless.

Got this right after Brian Wilson’s death, the music world lost a real genius. I know a lot of the Beach Bous hits but was nice to hear another side of them with this album. 3.5/5 rounding up for the legend that we loar

I remember touring with Brian and the boys back in 1957 with Houmous & Chutney. Back then they were called The Bitch Boys. They introduced themselves to Len. Back then Len Houmous was also the stage announcer. He misheard them due to their thick Glaswegian accents and announced. the Beach Boys. They moved to California and The rest is history. Still to this day, very few people know they are Scottish. 3.9 1/10 Don’t Go Near The Water

Very topical for multiple reasons, this is quite a departure from what I'm used to from the Beach Boys. Very political, verh conscious. I like it. Rest in Peace Brian Wilson.

Very good

Had not listened much beyond 'Pet Sounds' but really enjoyed this album. The first 4 songs especially are among my favourite Beach Boys songs. For a 17th album (!!!) it's a great listen.

Good stuff Favourite - Disney Girls

Beautiful vocal harmonies

I like that one song Disney girls thank you glenn Kim I love you to the moon.... and even all the way back

Interesting and more dynamic than their usual stuff.

Just a couple of days after Brian Wilson's death, this is a very appropriate one to come up. Ironically, Wilson didn't write or sing on much of this album except for the last 3 songs which are the best on the album. This one is a strange, eclectic group of songs with some great psychedelia ("Feel Flows"), a political sensibility, and much goofiness. Though "Pet Sounds" is their masterpiece I really enjoyed this one.

Really enjoyed this

RIP Brian Wilson. Really good album

Flaming Lips, Spiritualized, MGMT... etc. Interessante. 4/5

aside from the dreadful "student demonstration time", this is pretty great. the best songs are the brian ones of course, plus disney girls (1957).

Not what I expected from a beach boys album but excellent nonetheless

It starts with subertion of what the Beach Boys are in the public mind(boys enjoying the beach, d'oh) and it gives you an enviromental curveball. I kinda enjoyed the album. RIP Brian 4/5

this is the closest we get to Smile being on the list, huh? felt like a real mishmash of things and really just made me want to go listen to Smile. still a fun listen tho.

Not a fan of The Beach Boys but this is a great album!

I don't think this was a coincidence - the day after Brian Wilson's death? This album is a very different sound than the tried and true Beach Boys sound, but that doesn't make it bad. Respect!

Interesting album. The whole thing is pretty good, sometimes dark, sometimes playful, sometimes dorky. But then you get to the last three songs, which are noticeably so much better and more interesting than the rest. I’m guessing these are the Brian Wilson songs. Anyway, very cool album with some strange and curious dimensions (the juxtaposition of the title and cover art? crazy) and I would say it’s a must-listen. (#155)

For an album without any obvious Beach Boys classics on it, this is pretty decent.

got this the day after brian wilson died, it's no pet sounds but it's still great stuff

Amazing experimental album. A powerful statement as a band that is adapting to the music changes and help them remain relevant forever

3.7 Great album cover and somewhat better content than I expected.

I’ve never been a beach boys fan. Too poppy for me. But I thoroughly enjoyed this, and I appreciate Brian Wilson’s genius. 4

It’s very fitting that a Beach Boys album comes up just a day after legend Brian Wilson passed away. Not only a Beach Boys album, but one of their better ones. I bought this in a thrift shop almost 25 years ago and I never really gave it the attention it was due. Much of this album bypasses the beach and sun for darker topics and melancholy vibes, yet the sunny melodies survive. Student Demonstration Time is timely in today’s world environment and is also very clearly inspired by Revolution by The Beatles. Surf’s Up moves from sunny to meditative to eclectic creating a satisfying song that makes you feel like you’ve been given an unexpected super sized meal.

Seems a lot of people had a Beachy day today! After a few listens, I feel much more of a kinship to this album than when I began. It's got important messages about being kind to our water and our feet, and reflective musings on life and death. And the societal topics are just as relevant today as ever. There's a riot goin' on. I enjoyed the mix of quirky and chill and introspective and even bluesy. The album was weird, but it definitely grew on me. A Day in the Life of A Tree and 'Til I Die felt like Brian was already preparing goodbye songs. I'm glad he still had 54 more years to enjoy! RIP to Mr. Wilson, and thanks for all the tunes.

Weird coincidence for this to come up the day after Brian Wilson died. This was kind of what I would expect from The Beach Boys, with a few little twists. It was enjoyable but not up to their very best material. I love the album cover though.

One listen. Gut instinct 4 star. The Brian Wilson news sucked, dude is a world class musician and will be missed. The music and harmonies in this are so weird but they work so well. What a pioneer.

This feels like a perfect blend of 60s style with 70s inspirations. It's so damn catchy and not at all what I expected from the Beach Boys. Loved this one a ton. Favorites were Long Promised Road and Student Demonstration Time.

RIP Brian Wilson. This album is really great. Student Demonstration Time is on here too! Not quite as good as a Pet Sounds or Smile, and I think I like Sunflower a little more too, but an 8.5-9/10 is still a damn good rating. Favorite songs were Long Promised Road, Feel Flows, Til I Die, and Surf’s Up

could i write poetry to this? n

The political song lyrics are dopey as fuuuuck, but, otherwise, this album is pretty amazing.

Ég hlustaði á þessa plötu daginn eftir dauða Brian Wilson og mér fannst hún mun myrkari en það sem ég bjóst við að heyra við Beach Boys plötu. Það gæti hafa verið vegna fráfalls hans en platan var engu að síðu góð. Alveg endurhlustunarinnar virði.

3.7 1x . needs second listen. timely as Brian Wilson just passed yesterday

It’s not Pet Sounds and there’s a melancholy streak running through it but it is never dull

Not the Beach Boys I'm used to. This is not the cheery style that they're known for. Much better than expected.

RIP Brian Wilson who passed away yesterday 😢 Interestingly weird and different than what they'd done before do it was likely a big risk. Allot of it works I guess.

Listened to this on the day of Brian Wilson’s death. I’m not really a Beach Boys fan but this is a wonderful album full of melodic, quirky songs. Some of it reminds me of early 10cc.

i think i liked this more than pet sounds? but maybe i am a philistine.

The album cover is not what I expect when I think of the Beach Boys. The songs themselves are similarly not what I expect. Overall a pretty solid album.

Enjoyed the listen. Added "Long Promised Road" to my liked songs. Also wild to listen to "Student Demonstration" as a song from 1971 with all of the parallel turmoil of today.

aptly got this album the day after the death of Brian Wilson. Not a bad album, some good songs on it and a nice balance of different styles. Solid 4 stars

Surprisingly good, not really what I expected from the Beach Boys

The biggest surprise about this album is how activist it is. There are so many songs very clearly written to be pro-environmental works, and I love it. I love that a band that was all about surfing and fun believed that it was their platform to reminder people that the water isn’t fun if we actively poison it. The songs are unmistakably Beach Boys, but with some evolution in style to the singles I knew. A great listening experience.

love love love the beach boys, so happy to see them pop up, crazy it was the day after Brian passed away. I don't vibe as much with this album but some of the songs are great and honestly even the ones I don't click with I'm sure I will. some real haunting ones and stuff. Just isn't as sharp as it could be. Pretty firm 4.

Dark and broody compared to a lot of Beach Boys - very enjoyable

"Student Demonstration Time" was just downright embarrassing. Drags the whole album down. The rest of it shines with Brian Wilson's arrangements and gorgeous harmonies. 1971 was a hell of a year, man, even the Beach Boys struggled to focus on the positive.

Didn’t know The Beach Boys had this in them

Everyone under 50 who loves music must have their “I’m sorry, I wasn’t familiar with your game” moment and this one is mine. I listens to Pet Sounds years and years ago and could appreciate it, but still didn't get it. Now I do.

It is a good album.

It was great. Sad because of the timing of things.

I should be on a date at a retro bistro while sipping on Strawberry Ice Cream soda before we go to a drive-in movie theatre to watch Dirty Harry. Overall, the album consists of pleasant tracks that give off summer vibes but personally to me, they seem monotonous

I love the “we aren’t surfers anymore” narrative, find it very funny. Disney Girls and a day in the life of a tree are such beautiful songs. RIP Brian Wilson, getting fucked up in heaven with Dennis now

I got this album the day after Brian Wilson died... spooky! I don't think I'd ever listened to this. Not quite the high of Pet Sounds, but still great. Very different from their earlier work.

Wasnt familiar with this Beach Boys Album but its really good. Cover goes unnecessary hard. Student Demonstration Time was my fav. (4.0/5.0)

I guess we all got Beach Boys related content today due to Brian Wilson’s death yesterday. That being said, I normally enjoy The Beach Boys in small doses, but this was the first time I heard this album and I appreciated hearing a more subdued sound from the band.

Joining the probable many who are rating this with an RIP, thanks for the tunes. This album was a nice switch up from The Beach Boys normal and I liked the introspectiveness. Ironically Til I Die was my favorite (3.5/5)

Good vibes, fun for a summer drive

It rocked a bit more than I expected.

lol que onda? creo que cai en la trampa de juzgar un Álbum su portada, guardé 5 canciones, no son pegadicas pero si son como pa tenerlas de fundo, y eso es algo que aprecio un montón

I was surprised at how varied their sound is. 'Take a Load off your Feet' and 'Disney Girls' were the standout tracks.

Excellent Album.

I liked the album a lot! Great lyrics and good vibes

was really excited this album was assigned to me yesterday after Brian Wilson’s passing and then realized it was assigned to everyone. All the same, everyone should listen to it, but its no Pet Sounds. While the writing is good, it reeks of forced relatability (Don’t Go Near the Water) alongside loosely veiled political statements. This is fine, but some of their song choices just feel odd, which would have been a dismissible trait in the early 60s, but they were established at this point, and so was surf rock. Great album, great sound and a good lineup of songs —some of the picks are unfortunately juvenile.

What a beautiful album. I’m not sure how much I will go back to it, but I loved it and want to hear more from The Beach Boys overall.

Immediately love the cover art

Not the best, most memorable stuff by the Beach Boys, but still great to listen to.

Great album, mostly slow and relaxed with a few upbeat songs sprinkled in there.

rly good album!! i love the beach boys

неплохой, было приятно послушать.

A very different side of the quintessential summer band I had no clue even existed. This is music for when the beach is trashed, the heat is scalding hot, and everyone’s nervous about the summer inevitably coming to a close. It’s dark and unusually pessimistic, but still contains the group’s signature harmonies, like a ray of sunshine attempting to break through the ever-building clouds.

I liked it. This was the first Beach Boys album I’ve ever listened to. I’ve only ever heard their hits randomly but never a whole album.

BB Hole

Warm and comfortable

Raw energy.

Great Beach Boys album. Very pleasant and accessible. The song about student protests in LA was super prescient…

Genuinely really enjoyable sound. Actually really refreshing. Standout songs: Long Promised Road Student Demonstration Time

Another album I had never listened to in full.

catchy and layered. RIP Brian

Very timely - my son had been telling me to listen to this, so I’m glad I did. Will definitely listen again.

This was fun! Only ever listened to popular beach boys.

Won-won-wonderful...except Student Demonstration Time. Shoutout Bruce Johnston for Disney Girls, that is absolute heat. Thank you, Brian. (8/10, 4/5 on this scale)

Great Beach Boy album, showing why they influenced the Beatles.

There's some real clunkers on this late Beach Boys attempt at being socially conscious. There's a song that's an ode to caring for you feet. Seriously! And a homage to our oceans and how bathing pollutes them. Uhh...okay Hippie. But it's the back half of the record that really gets going. In fact, Feel Flows has to be one of the best Beach Boys songs I've never heard of. It's got some pretty out there lyrics, but the production and melody are incredible. All in all, Surf's Up is uneven, but the highs hit really high.

Always great!

It’s an enjoyable, solid 70s Beach Boys record. There are some real gems: Til I Die and Surf’s Up are obvious, but Feel Flows, Long Promised Road, and Disney Girls are classics as well.

The Beach Boys get major clinical depression

The Beach Boys, like The Beatles, were always more than just a mop-top 60s boy band playing music about surfing or holding hands. Really solid album. Brian Wilson is an excellent songwriter and producer.

A different Beach Boys album. Dark and at times psychedelic but I liked it. Production is top notch.

Obsessed with the ending of the title track. Quite a mixed bag but intriguing.

I've never heard this album before. I don't even think I've ever heard any of the songs on it. Pleasantly surprised.

Favorite track: Surf's up other picks: student demonstration time, feel flows, til I die

Dark, weird, and schmaltzy. Kind of erratic at times but overall a wonderful journey of an album.

Listening to this one the day after Brian passed away. I'm so sad I didn't appreciate this man's work more when he was alive. RIP Brian Wilson, thank you for Disney Girls.
