Reviews (page 10 of 13)
It's full of quality as you'd expect and well put together, but it doesn't have a lot of stand-out tracks. A number of the tracks I wasn't particularly taken with, especially those that lean towards country. 3.5 rounded down.
"Street Fighting Man" and "Sympathy For The Devil" aren't enough to lift this mediocre Stones album up to the pantheon of later releases. Brian Jones would be cycled out before his unfortunate death, so in many ways it's the end of one era and the start on a new...
I feel like this album starts with a bang and then pretty much declines from there. Sympathy for the devil is awesome, but the rest of the album does not live up to that performance.
Kinda boring. It was ok like pretty good. I want really paying much attention to it so I think I would like it if I re listened to it
Solid Stones record. This is the Stones I think of when listening to this album. Very easy-going and a nice listen overall.
not super into it but sympathy for the devil and street fighting man are always good.
Very Stones. Jagger's voice gets a little whiny and annoying sometimes but the melodies are nice enough and I listened to it as background music and enjoyed it. 3 stars.
hell yea music
Not much to it outside of the hits
Mostly great stuff, but never my first Stones pick.
Pretty good
Sympathy For The Devil kannte ich, und sonst ist es Rolling Stones pur: bluesig, rolling, rockig!
While I appreciate the bluesier tone of this album, there's just something unexplainable that I don't feel like I'm connecting with it. The songs are either really gun and out there, or just feel like filler thay doesn't do anything for me personally. Still one of the better Rolling Stones albums in my opinion. Top tracks: Sympathy for the Devil, No Expectations, Jigsaw Puzzle
The songs all sound great, but I don't think I really "get" them. There are interesting perspectives being told, like on the famous "Sympathy for the Devil" and "Jigsaw Puzzle," but I am not left with a particular message or feeling in mind. "Prodigal Son" and "Factory Girl" are more simplistic lyrically, although I don't enjoy these more for being easier to understand. "Stray Cat Blues" is about...getting freaky with a 15 year old? "No Expectations" was a very beautiful sounding song. The construction and performance of the classic rock sound is pleasant, but I am not sure I can really appreciate what the album has to offer.
I was looking forward to delving into this one due to the opening track Sympathy For The Devil. Unfortunately a lot of the album didn't live up to that with a lot of blandness. There is some interesting instrumentation sprinkled throughout the album, but I don't think that's enough to make it great.
I had listened to this about a year ago and liked it much more that time. I found it pretty boring blues rock. It’s cool in the context of The Rolling Stones career path but as a listening experience pretty meh. Rating: 3.0
S’aight
Ahead of its time for 1968, wouldn't return to it
I luv sympathy for the devil Also mega enjoyed: no expectations, jigsaw puzzle, stray cat blues Thought I was going to hate this! Pleasantly surprised
There's one good song, there's some generic blues-y slog, and there's one extremely annoying song (Dear Doctor). 3 instead of 2 because Sympathy for the Devil is legitimately very good.
I wanna put it as a 2/5 but this album just sounds too good for 1968. amazing song to lead the album and has some other bangers to get with. 2.7 for me so made it a 3
White guy blues
not bad 7/10
Sympathy and Street Fight are all time greats. I liked a few others that I wasn't familiar with.
Some great tracks but as my friend put it, world’s best blues bar band. Most of the songs seemed like borrowed elements from other blues musicians that in my opinion did it better.
A few good songs
Nice album! More country than I was expecting
I forgot that I listened to this album yesterday, so that should tell you how memorable it was to me.
I was underwhelmed
It was interesting listening to this after Creedence Clearwater Revival for the first time. Similar sound (RnB rock), but prefer CCR. Some great songs on here, including Sympathy for the Devil which is my favourite Stones track. But in general, Micks vocals feels like a bit of a drag. A dirge. The music provides the melody, but would want more form the vocals. One plus though was Salt of the Earth, which I've not heard before. But then, perhaps that was good because of the gospel backing singers rather than the band themselves?
Some Songs I’d never heard. Good music and singing.
You can pinpoint this as when the Stones exit their psychedelic era and go back to their roots/country/blues rock era. This whole album is kind of a mishmash of the latter-mentioned rock genres, bouncing around between the three. I actually don't think that "Sympathy For The Devil" works as a starting track here though, as it doesn't seem to fit in with the rest of this album from a thematic standpoint. Not a bad listen overall, but guess I was expecting more or maybe I just prefer the Stones harder rock sound (which I'm sure I'll get to later in this list)
4th album from the Stones and it's fine. Opening track is a banger and the rest is just meh. I've never found the Rolling Stones all that interesting. They are present and fine but beyond their hits, their album tracks are just okay and nothing exceptional.
really drops off after WOO WOO
It was fine. Nothing special. I was expecting more from a Stones album.
#210. This list is making me like the Rolling Stones less and less with every album I listen to one here. Yet again, an album with about 1½ bangers, and a bunch of slop. 3/5: come on guys, I feel like you should be better than this...
2.65/5. The majority of the songs on this album were background noise to me and didnt stick out. Exceptions were sympathy, Jigsaw Puzzle, factory girl and salt of the earth. Those were great songs. Also the more i listen to Stones albums all the way through, the more I am getting annoyed by Jagger's delivery.
Love sympathy for the devil, and some nicer tracks with an almost country sound to them. Does dip hard later in the album.
It's official: I do not like the rolling stones
p130. 1968. 3 stars. Evidence that the Stones were once a decent blues/rock band. When it's good it's very good indeed, but there is a LOT of filler.
‘Sympathy for the Devil’ is the hit of this album, but other than that I didn’t hear anything too spectacular. Granted I was driving a van full of kids to go camping, so my attention was divided.. 3/5
Much better production (dat bass) and more focused sound. Their best album so far. Highlights: "Sympathy for the Devil" (badass opener), "No Expectations" (countryish ballad with slide guitar and piano), "Stray Cat Blues" (sounds scuzzy, good at setting the mood. Jagger's vocals remind me of Morrison), "Salt of the Earth" (Music is great, vocals are a bit meh (another Dylan copy), becomes anthemic by the end with the female choir)
Pretty average Rolling Stones album, I liked the first two songs the most.
A Great Album Filled with bangers but also monotonous fillers…
Good shit. Nada taaan remarcable, yo diría que el fuerte del disco es sympathy, muy buen tema. El resto son buenos temas de folk/blues. Sacan harto de dylan, lo cual es positivo.
It has 2 huge singles that are great but I was a little disappointed that most of the other songs were just okay. A 3 because I expected this to be better, but it certainly isn't bad.
Not my favourite Stones album but still had a few classics.
Sympathy for the Devil is one of my favorite songs. And that’s the problem with the Stones; they have some amazing songs but most are meh. This album is better than the last I got. This album is an improvement, at a 3.
I kind of zoned out but it wasn’t bad. the songs blended together so i would need to learn lyrics to get more into each one and not get tired of the sound.
starts with "Sympathy For The Devil" which is probably my favorite song ever but it tapers off quite a bit after that, not the best stones album
Pretty great album. 3.5 stars. The Stones sound pretty lean and angry here after the excesses of their previous album. Sympathy for the Devil is the standout, but Street Fighting Man holds its own. They also do a great Blues cover of Prodigal Son.
3/5
Sympathy for the Devil is by far the best song on this record. I've still yet to listen to a Stones album that made me drop what I was doing and pique up in interest. This album was again a lot more blues than I expected, so much so that Synpathy feels out of place. My favorites here are probably Dear Doctor and Prodigal Son.
Time for Rolling Stones album number 3! It's been a while since I got one of these, about 4 months as a matter of fact. I did not like my first album of theirs, Aftermath, and I thought my second experience of theirs with Sticky Fingers was pretty good. Beggars Banquet was released between these two albums and, fittingly, my enjoyment of this album was between those two as well. I like this album significantly more than Aftermath mainly because it has less offensive writing. I was actually hopeful that I would get to experience an entire Rolling Stones album without an offensive song in it, but then "Stray Cat Blues" comes on and Mick Jagger just has to sing about having sex with a 15 year old! God damn it! Anyways, back to comparing this to their other albums, the sound is kind of in between those two, but it does lean closer to Sticky Fingers as a whole. There are some pretty good songs on here. The album's opener, "Sympathy for the Devil" is one of the band's most accomplished tracks, and for good reason. That song is pretty good. It has an interesting concept that is executed well. I think the album also ends on a good note with "Salt of the Earth," which is another good song. Not every song works, but the ones that do work pretty well. The overall sound is decent. It feels consistent, but not too consistent to the point of monotony. Overall, while this is not my favorite Rolling Stones album, it certainly isn't my least favorite. 3/5.
I thought this was a more middle of the road album for The Rolling Stones. Not their best, but it’s not all that bad either. Their two prior albums were more psychedelic rock, and I personally wish they would have stayed on that road, cause I really enjoyed those albums. Either way this one is definitely more of a blues rock album, so if that’s your thing, than you’ll definitely enjoy this one.
It’s my long held belief that The Rolling Stones do not have any great albums. However, they are an excellent singles band. They fall into the category of bands whose best albums are the greatest hits records. I’ve listened to Beggars Banquet a few times over the years and on this fresh listen, the hits are still the only songs that I recall ever hearing. The tracks aren't bad, but they're just plain forgettable.
I’ve always thought I didn’t care for the Stones. But I really liked the first track. The rest didn’t do anything for me, and some felt like they were stealing.
Never really got into RS. Listened to it and found it to be a little more folksy that I expected. Still, some upbeat rock that sorta I enjoyed.
6/10 Please let me introduce myself... what a way to start an album. Amazing track. Woo Woo! 10/10 The other songs are also on the album Highlights: Sympathy for the Devil Street Fighting Man (best of the rest I guess)
This was definitely the stones going blues rock before they nailed it on sticky fingers. It’s mostly fine but it’s definitely carried by sympathy for the devil and street fighting man more than anything.
A bit all over the place with a good hint of country. Very easily identifiable as the stones. Only two single worthy songs tho and nothing more. A safe Album that touched a few bases and touches them well. Lyricism in a good place, factory girl reminds me slightly of the pogues
Eh, its alright
Has some classic tunes. But overall I find it a bit overrated stones album. However - SofD and salt of the earth is are great bookends.
Ehh, the hits are good but the album is mid.
Didn't realize they just sounded like Bob Dylan
I'll give them this, "Sympathy For The Devil" is a perfect rock song. Highlights: Sympathy For The Devil, Parachute Woman, Street Fighting Man
Лучшая песня - Sympathy for the Devil.
Listening to this over the weekend opened me up to the stones a bit. Banger 3 song opener. There is killer Get Back style footage of them figuring out Sympathy for the Devil in Godard's film of the same name.
Klang ungewöhnlich, aber ich kenn mich mit den Stones auch nich aus. Sympathy is natürlich gold.
A few classics, some typical Stones, some bluesy numbers
First time I actually listened to a Rolling Stones album
Is fine
Preferisco altri album nella loro discografia.
A good listen, but not my favorites of theirs
Its not a bad album, but its nothing i would listen to again.
Its ok
This record is from towards the beginning of a stretch where the Stones were cranking out wildly excellent records. I feel like this is on the weaker side of what they were putting out though. I gel really well with the tracks that have heavier emphasis on piano and those bouncy tempos, but the more standard Blues-Rock approaches on this album failed to stand out to me. All in all that adds up to about a half-and-half record in terms of quality. I will say, I do appreciate that this listen made a lot click into place that never had for me before. When I was exploring the Stones on my own in my younger days I only ever gravitated towards their more straightforward Rock outings, so hearing Sympathy For The Devil and Street Fighting Man this time around and finally understanding what makes them so great when I had always written them off in the past was very rewarding for me. Top tracks: Sympathy For The Devil, Jigsaw Puzzle, Street Fighting Man, Stray Cat Blues, Salt Of The Earth
I really like Jig-Saw Puzzle. Pretty good overall.
THE STONES
Не моё, скучновато. Понравилась пара песен.
My memory of the album was a bit better than the re-listen from 1976. Remember all the songs. L’s first time of ever listening to this album, absolutely a Stones fan to this to this day! Sympathy still great 55 years later. (2.6*s)
It's music.
Favourite songs: Sympathy for the Devil, Stray Cat Blues, Parachute Woman, Street Fighting Man, No Expectations Least favourite songs: Dear Doctor 3/5
One of the weakest RS albums.
Right, Beggars Banquet starts with my favourite Stones song, which isn't saying much as I don't get on with them, but Sympathy For The Devil ticks a lot of boxes. Then nothing else gets close and it's the same middle of the road inoffensive sound that I've never liked or disliked, it's just there. I've said the same for the countless albums we've already had from them; weirdly their new release last year has a few songs I do actually like although that might just be because they got a lot of run from Planet Rock and they seeped into my consciousness and likes that way. Anyway, this one peaks on track one, Street Fighting Man lifts it midway through after some rubbish (Dear Doctor is awful), and it sits in the middle of the road to the end. High 2/Low 3 just because of SFTD.
The Stones really are a singles band, aren't they? Sympathy For The Devil is a brilliant song, but there's not really an awful lot after that. Street Fighting Man is decent, but the rest is all very samey and bluesy. 3/5, just.
Hyvää KAMAAA heh...
The Stones are not for me, but it is of course good
Couple of bangers, and generally a classic. But a majority of the songs don't have that magic hook or staying power. Still a good rock/bluesy album, but there are better from the Stones.
Buen disco.
Gear: Moondrop Variations Mix: "Sympathy for the Devil" ist ein Produktions-Benchmark - der Rest des Albums kann leider nicht ganz mithalten Musik: Killer: "Sympathy for the Devil" und "Street Fighting Man" Filler: der Rest Wertung: 😈😈😈(😈)/5
Really bluesy and way more low key than I thought. Sounds like the times
meh. Not my style but has potential with a few replays
Again pleasantly surprised. The Stones are better when they sound less Jaggery.
2,8
Good but quite the same style nothing stood out to me thats new
skipped the first track bc i already know that one. so i just listened to the ending of it so i can see what it sounds like transitioning into the next song (No Expectations). (...aaanndddd i got a Spotify ad in between so nevermind i guess........) i loved no expectations. they were high as fawk in that studio huh.. parachute woman land on me tonight, will you blow me out. well, my heavy throbbers itchin' are crazy lines. so like is this their "country music influenced album"?? sonically? lmao. me im just tryna do my jigsaw puzzle, so true. same. street fighter man is noice. nods. that is no way to get along indeed... "i think i'll go home now" ok well that's gross. thats disgusting. (i opened the wiki page of this song..only to see its LOVED BY MANY...and then i see "it appeared in the movie Joy (2015). so i google the director. david o russel. of course it fucking is. congrats to you ALL.....) last 2 songs were good............... :l
All my life I've always been a Beatles fan more than I've been a Stones fan. Blame it on exposure: when I was young I had a full-frontal blast of THE BEATLES: ROCK BAND, which inspired me to collect every one of their stupid albums and buy into the mythology the old guards had given them (which, to some extent, I still believe to this day). Contrast that with the Stones, where at most there was one song in GUITAR HERO III, a Weird Al polka, maybe some needle drops, and the knowledge that Lennon and McCartney wrote "I Wanna Be Your Man" for them. There wasn't really as much there to get me to dig through their stuff. Even as the years drew on and I became more aware of the praise given to them, a lot of their stuff has remained in a pile that I've come to label "Albums I'll Listen To One Of These Days–Honest!" Hell, it was only a couple of years ago I finally listened to the US versions of AFTERMATH and BETWEEN THE BUTTONS. So here I am, finally, with the first album in their golden period. How does it hold up to me? What have I been missing all of these years? To begin, let's pull this framework all the way through and get it over with: I prefer what The Beatles were doing in '68, which was their legendary WHITE ALBUM. Now, it's no doubt probably not fair to compare them. I mean, the WHITE ALBUM is an eclectic monstrosity of a double album born out of the turbulence the band was going through at the time. BEGGARS BANQUET, meanwhile, is a single album made under lighter circumstances except for what Brian Jones was going through, and at its core it's a return to the roots rock and blues they were doing earlier in their career. And don't get me wrong, I get that that's why this is here on this list: the return to roots. Well, the partial return, anyway, because while they were coming out of a heavy dive into psychedelic music on THEIR SATANIC MAJESTIES REQUEST they weren't leaving behind the worldly and more exotic influences. You wouldn't listen to "Sympathy For The Devil" or "Factory Girl" and say they're just roots and blues. Not to mention, I figure it's expanding on how they incorporated those influences into their regular sound that would lead them to later make LET IT BLEED and EXILE ON MAIN ST. and so on. It's just there here, at its earliest "stripped-down return to roots" form... Even with the external influences, it's still mostly just roots and blues music. Of course it's GOOD roots and blues music; it hasn't gotten all of this praise as the first album in their golden period for nothing after all. But I feel like even if I had listened to this at that young age, in the period of time between "Paint It Black" and THE BEATLES: ROCK BAND... I don't think it would've really swayed me to be a Stones fan more. Maybe another one, but not this one. To put it another way: I also find that "Hey Jude" kind of upstages this album. Sorry 'bout the birthday, Mick.
This album feels like a blend of different genres - there is rock, country, jazz? Liked "No Expectations" and "Factory Girl", but some of the songs were a miss for me.
Such a good start then never hits those heights again.
Under 40 minutes and opens with Sympathy for the Devil, but doesn't capitalise on that. Save for Street Fighting Man, the rest is fairly forgettable and I wouldn't listen to it again.
This album starts great with Sympathy for the Devil, a classic song that just about everyone knows. Unfortunately, the rest of the album doesn't hold up. It's a very hit and miss album with some good songs hidden in the mix, but it never gets quite as memorable as the opening track (which honestly sounds like a completely different album), nor does it compensate for the handful of boring country rock songs that pop up on here. It's competently produced, the riffs make sense, the lyrics range from meaningful to pap, but it didn't stick with me. I don't feel old enough to get into this, unfortunately.
I'm not a rolling stones fan but this was pretty good.
Solid album. Favourites: Sympathy for the devil, no expectations, jigsaw puzzle,
Not enough misogyny to be good
so, i am a bit confused because i actually quite liked this album. i probably wouldn’t listen to it again but i thought i would always hate them and i was wrong they’re not always insufferable. but part of me wonders if it was just pure relief because i hated them sooo much. anyways, not so bad. sometimes even a bit fun.
the album really peaks with the first track. sympathy for the devil is so much better than the rest. the melody and the mixing especially. the mixing is kinda rough on this album and not the good kind of rough. i did enjoy most of the songs though. favs include: no expectations, factory girl, jigsaw puzzle, and dear doctor. the rest are fine too. also, what the hell is - stray cat blues??? 15 year old? it's disgusting. the mixing on parachute women is really grating where the kickdrum is panned to the left and it just pecks your brain really annoyingly. i don't know why the mixing is so rough on this album. i was really expecting more from a Stones album. aren't they supposed to be the Beatles contemporaries? the production, the writing, the melodies really aren't up to any of those classic Beatles albums tbh. anyway, it's a strong 6 light 7 for me.
This album starts with 'Sympathy for the Devil', which remains the Rolling Stones' manum opus (woo woo, woo woo, woo woo, woo woo, etc.). It closes with 'Salt of the Earth' and has 'Street Fighting Man' in the middle, both of which I know from covers by 90s/00s indie bands. These brought some welcome familiarity. I also liked the rest of the album, which comprises gentle blues rock with a wistful country flavour. Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: Sympathy for the Devil Date listened: 29/01/24
I loveeeee the very first song. An overall good experience listening to it. Prolly wouldn’t listen to it again tho
There were some really good, famous songs on this album. There were also other songs as well.
I can hear the appeal and its pretty cool, but not all that for me
A classic I guess but some of those lyrics dude wth. Idk didn’t blow me away but I dig the country jam vibe
Thought it was okay
en stark trea.
So… this is why I don’t really get The Stones. “Sympathy for the Devil” and “Street Fighting Man” are fantastic but the rest of the album is… fine. It’s like a blues cover band or something. This is why I think they are a singles band. Their greatest songs are REALLY great but the rest just seems like filler. #TeamBeatles
I have no strong opinions about this album. It was more acoustic/folk than I was expecting based off of Sympathy For The Devil
Good
A classic but not my favorite Stones album.
Bonus point for incredible cover art
It’s ok wasn’t expecting country
Pretty decent rolling stone record. Few memorable hits but overall an enjoyable listen.
Good Stones album. Not every song is great, so it lacks the overall strength of an “Exile” or “Let it Bleed”. 3.5/5 Probably will listen again
Stones at it‘s best!
Folk music based. Funny how the two songs you would know are more rock than folk.
Un 3 sobre 5
Good album, not my favorite of theirs. I prefer their earlier stuff.
Good album. More bluesy sounding than I expected. Symphony for the Devil is a classic and love hearing that song.
Mittlere Qualität für ein Stones Album…
Favorite Tracks: Sympathy For The Devil Street Fighting Man Prodigal Son
Ok, grandparents
Not bad for the Stones
Deze mats ik met drie sterren vanwege Sympathy for the devil, verder wel zaad.
Not terrible, but I probably wouldn’t listen to by choice. The music is good, just not my thing.
A classic but a bit underwhelming to me.
На семерочку – 40%
Definitely not my favorite Rolling Stones album. It still includes some legendary tracks. Good listen, a little disappointed compared to other projects by the band.
Té un parell de cançons molt bones però comença amb Sympathy for the Devil i ja d'allà no fa més que perdre
Les Rolling Stones commencent à trouver leur propre voix et à se différencier de leurs contreparties, à devenir «étranges».
Sure, you’ve got two of the biggest classic rock radio hits of all time on this album. And that might be enough to earn it four stars, but everything else here is just so meh, I gotta take away one. This is right before the golden age of the Stones, and it’s a fine blend of that new sound we’d eventually associate the group with and their blues roots. A good sign of things to come, but just never really reaches the peaks of Stick Fingers or Let It Bleed.
“Sympathy For The Devil” and “Street Fighting Man” are so, so good, but everything else here is so, so dull.
With a few great known songs the rest felt pretty disjointed and becomes just ok.
Classic Stones album, a couple of outstanding tracks surrounded by meh.
Haven't listened much to Rolling Stones, but this wasn't very convincing. I might be wrong, but I expected Stones to be a bit more... hard rock perhaps? This is quite tame rock in my opinions. Didn't really find any specific song that grabbed me on the album. Also, 'Sympathy For The Devil' is in my opinion an extremely overrated song. All throughout the song it feels like it's about to take off, and then it's over.
It struck me that I\ve never listened to a whole Rolling Stones album and I kind of see why. "Sympathy for the devil" and "Street Fighting Man" are classics. The rest I could leave. There is so much better blues music out there from the same era. Feels like brits trying to emulate american blues music.
fine, pretty bland in my opinion. nothing bad
Pretty good album, I definitely enjoyed sympathy for the devil
Always a favorite. Never heard all of this album, but it seems to be a good one. I like that the stones always throw back and mix in some classic blues
I always want to like the Stones more than I do. This record is an example of why. It’s so close to something I want to listen to, but it’s not.
Dont mind it; but not loving it
3.5. Nærmer seg musikksmaken min :)
Sympathy for the Devil: Can't stop thinking of a train. Dear Doctor: Reminds me of the Avett Brothers. Factory Girl: This sounds so much more folksy than I thought it would. Salt of the Earth: very gospel
i zoned out and accidentally fell asleep at the end of the album
3- I’m not sure how I feel about the stones, I think this album would normally be higher for me. Just felt it being quite rusty but not in a nice way
I’m not a stones fan but not a bad album..
Good album. Not much to write about. 3/5
I find the individual songs hard to get into but the album really works as one piece. More folky and blues than I am used to with the Stones.
Stones Sympathy for the devil is cool. I really liked factory girl too. Stones are pretty hit or miss for me. I found some of the generic blues rock stuff hard to listen to. Wish it was better recorded, and had better performances, and better songs too.
really didn’t like this as much as I thought I would. This feels weird to say but the guitar sounds terrible, especially the tone on sympathy for the devil which is such an iconic solo. Stray cat blues is pretty gross lyrically.
I think it’s cool but it wasn’t very memorable. First track is super cool.
I am a huge fan of The Rolling Stones when it comes to their rock songs. Not so much of a fan of their country/blues tunes which is heavily heard in this album. Overall it was okay and nothing too spectacular, except for the legendary "Sympathy for the Devil" (which is one of my favorite songs ever!) Favorite Song(s): "Sympathy For The Devil", "No Expectations", "Street Fighting Man"
Sympathy for the Devil is a classic, but this album doesn’t hold my attention after that. To me it’s one of the less interesting Stone albums of their prime years
Woo woo, woo woo, woo woo, woo woo, woo woo, This is the only song that resonated, woo woo, woo woo, woo woo, woo woo
A bit disappointed with the rest of the album after how good sympathy for the devil is, a bit more bluesy than some of their other albs
Sympathy For The Devil isn't my favourite Rolling Stones song but there's definitely something unique about it, which is more than I can say for the rest of the album. Once again, it's all fine (Stray Cat Blues and Salt of The Earth are better than fine) but everything's in that same rootsy vein that doesn't stand out to me, hence I struggle to understand the hype. FWIW I feel like I'm always slagging off the Stones so for balance, I'll go on record as saying I really like their new album. Much more than this one. 2.5 / 3
Another one with a couple heavy hitters lifting up an overall meh album.
Bra! #3 lite sämre, men ändå bra musik #4 kort.
Street fighting man and Sympathy for the Devil are great. I'd listen to the those tracks again but I don't think i'd listen to this album again.
Blues rock. Primal Scream borrowed heavily from this for Give Out But Don't Give Up, particularly on "Big Jet Plane," which is basically a rewrite of "No Expectations" (even a reference to pearls and swine). Highlights are "Street Fighting Man" and "Sympathy for the Devil."
This was one of the bad albums I never bought!! 3 stars!
Enjoyed it.
Wasn’t what i expected tbh! Not that bad, but not my fave
I like the stones, but not there albums. Its usually 2/3 bangers with a bunch of filler wildly mixxing in quality. The bluesy stuff here is okay but nothing special. The hits on this one are great tho.
Sympathy for the devil
I mean sympathy for the devil and street fighting man. classic stones. but some of their songs (salt of the earth) I'm not a fan of.
3.5/5. Great Album but nothing super exciting.
First track went hard, the rest were ok
Diversity of instruments in this album never fails. Easy listen.
Sympathy for the Devil though
One great song. One other ok song. The rest is garbage. 3 stars just for Sympathy for the Devil.
T was rustiger dan the beatles? Voor mij viel er geen een echt op , maar wel fun album voor onderweg
The more I listen to these albums the more I understand why they're so relevant. This album sounds way ahead of its time. I was surprised that this modern sound stems from the late 60's. (Then again, possibly "modern sounds" also take influence from this.) Very versatile album.
As with all Rolling Stones albums, the hits are incredible and the rest is generic blues rock.
Had more of a hokey, less rock-n-roll sound than I expected.
It was better than I thought. A little more early than I was expecting. May play it again.
Liked the first couple songs, hated the next couple, the rest were meh.
Obviously the first song is a classic, but the rest of the album is pretty meh. Definitely some good musicianship going on, but honestly nothing too remarkable except for the lyrics in stray cat about banging a 15 year old. Yeech!
This is fine but not anything remarkable to me. I find most of the songs pleasant enough but rather forgettable. I've never been a huge fan of the stones and this doesn't change my mind. I like the folky and bluesy aspects of the music but would rather listen those genres outright than this interpretation of them. I'm enjoying the related songs spotify has chosen to play after this album more than the album itself.
Far from the best Rolling Stones album, but a few standout tracks
Seré muy exigente, dicho esto. 6/10 álbum de los clásicos, si lo pone mi papá en carretera lo escucho pero no guarde ninguna canción para mi biblioteca
Good but not great, in my opinion I prefer Exile on Main St and whatever their album with the crotch shot is called. Definitely better than Aftermath though I’ll return to this one at some point, it could grow on me
The Rolling Stones are monumental for the advancement of music. Their artistic decisions laid the groundwork for rock and roll to flourish in the following decades. Beggars Banquet, with a more country rock vibe, may have been an inspirational album at the time but felt a little lacking overall.
Being the first Rolling Stones album I've listened to the whole way through, I consider this album a solid success. Sympathy for the Devil is an obvious classic. The production value is also second-to-none, to the point where it can carry some of the same-y blues/rock songs that may overpopulate the album. Highlight: Sympathy for the Devil Lowlight: Parachute Woman Surprise Hit: Dear Doctor
slightly better than their magazine
Not their best, but decent nonetheless
Nothing super wrong with this! Some charismatic rock n roll with an Americana bent that feels a bit like cosplay but that's okay. Too much of that Jagger magnetism to be a write off but I won't necessarily be listening again. Fave track: Sympathy for the Devil
Enjoyed this listen - maybe not as much as other Stones records I've listened to, but still had a pretty good time. Great playing and character, even if some of the blues tracks all begin to sound a little bit samey. This is maybe a light three and a half for me. Fave track: Street Fighting Man
Passabler Root Rock. Sehr bekannt der Eröffnungssong "Sympathy for the Devils"!
Great
The sound of a band having more fun then the listener, the Stones indulge their love of roots rock but never quite convince us of the same. Sympathy for the Devil is a tired old thing and Street Fighting Man is a dull riff. Stray Cat Blues was a highlight and an entertaining jam.
God oplevelse. Mere blues-agtig end jeg forventede
It is an okay album. Track 5 was the best
No Exceptions, Prodigal Son and Street Fighting Man are wonderful the rest are not songs I feel compelled to revisit.
The Stones are icons, but their stuff is hit or miss for me. "Sympathy for the Devil" hits, but the rest not as much.
Still think the Stones are overrated. Good album, but don’t think it’s as good as people make it out to be.
intro was awesome, decent album, not really my taste but still really good
Iconic sound to usher in the legendary 70s rock n roll scene. Sympathy for the devil has unlimited replay potential, great song that people will recognize but aren't sick of. Nice crunchy guitar thoughout the album, twangy bass with a nice low-end, iconic vocals, and punchy drums! The sound gets a little bit repetitive with the slide guitar sound. Lead guitar can get a little bit too heady. Stand-out songs: Sympathy for the devil (T1), No Expectations (T2), Stray Cat Blues (T8). A good album for both the oldheads and younger listeners, super listenable, and not too demanding. I did find myself wanting it to end by the last track, despite being ~40mins. Really middle-of-the-road album for me, 2.57/5
I forgot that I had blocked Spotify from recommending The Rolling Stones until I got to this album, which gives you an idea of how sick I am of this band. However, I have never listened to an album all the way through. This one features one of my favorite songs by them, Sympathy for the Devil (because of the Master and Margarita). We’ll see how the rest stacks up. Ok after listening this sort of confirms my idea that The Rolling Stones were rock’s original hipster posers. That being said, I do lament the time when a band could record this many albums in quick succession because it allowed for more looseness and spontaneity, which bolstered confidence and was good for creativity. I would be hard-pressed to think of a band of similar stature operating this quickly today (which would be a false comparison regardless, popular music is so much more fragmented today). In any event, I get it, but it’s still kind of a big meh for me.
Average rolling stones album.
A strong opener followed by surprising but not unwelcome country music. Not super familiar with the rolling stones but this is not what I expected. It was an interesting mix of rock and country. Enjoyable but I got a bit tired of it by the end. 3/5.
- Stones have a good sound that I wish had a little more edge - Cool classic rock with some jamming - Stray Cat Blues explicitly being about a 15 year old is not a great look - Sympathy For The Devil and Jigsaw Puzzle are my favs
- a little too bluesy for me - really enjoyed the drumming
It seems that the Rolling Stones have made it as far as they have by pumping out as much music as possible. Most of their albums have a couple hits and then are strewn with mediocrity. This album is no exception. Sympathy for the Devil is the standout, followed by Street Fighting Man. A band with a fantastic Greatest Hits album and a remaining catalogue of music I don't really care about.
It was alright I guess. A little harmonica goes a long way. The first song always slaps though
Sympathy For The Devil was the only track I knew here. I heard that as the opening track and I was thinking "Okay, here we go, this should be good..." but then Sympathy For The Devil finishes and nothing as fun or compelling follows. There were a couple of alright songs but most of them were a bit boring. Quite a shame really. Favourite: Sympathy For The Devil
7/10
Fine album. Great singles, kind of meh filler throughout. Sympathy for the devil, oh doctor, and street fighting man were my favs. Aside from that it feels a bit like a standard Rolling Stones mid-tier album. Solid, good, enjoyable, but nothing really particularly special.
Fun, Classic rock, couldnt keep me interesred
Bar the incredible songs at the start of each side, this one is a pretty average Stones record
Obviously an iconic band so so you expect better things, this wasn't a bad album but it didn't wow me. Track 1 and 3 are the stand out tracks. It's a bit all over the place with the genres the songs don't seem to transition from each other well. I expect better from the rolling stones.
The Stones are one of the best greatest hits bands ever, but I've yet to be really impressed by one of their albums.
Sympathy For The Devil only. the rest of the album is just sitting there.
Sympathy for the devil is alfa, the rest is goof but not amazing. Too much similar sounding blues. 3.5
Average, Rolling Stones sound
Sympathy for the devil is obviously a huge track, but aside from that nothing really stands out at all as being very good.
Yep, it is a Stone's album. A few outstanding tracks with a bunch of countrified-blues filler. Not bad as their offerings go but not essential for me
Sympathy
Ive listened to Symapthy for the Devil like 100 times but never listened to this album before. It has a really interesting blues sound I would say and IDK how I felt ab it. Different
Aika monta tuttua kappaletta. Enemmän bluesmaista mitä olin aatellut
Brilliant example of 60's rock, with a bluesy-folk vibe. Very enjoyable but a bit slow for today's standards of rock.
Not a huge Stones fan, but this had some great classics, but a few were just kinda meh.
3.4 Basically a Bob Dylan album lmao. But I actually enjoyed it, it's a good album to have in the background since the songs flow into each other pretty well and the overall theme and vibe is the same. fave songs: jigsaw puzzle, prodigal son,
A bit more country than I was expecting, but that’s ok. Always nice to hear Sympathy for the Devil too.
A few of their famous hit but this may have a few you seldom list to.
Its mostly alright but spiced with one very good song.
-i mean cmon, its the rolling stones -first song was pretty cool -no expectations was kind slow but sweet -im always surprised by the rolling stones idk why -parachute woman has this really cool vibe to it -i don’t love the rolling stones, but i don’t hate them -street fighting man isn’t as good as i was expecting it to be but i enjoyed it! -i do really like prodigal son -stray cat blues is a certified banger -love the name of it too
Enjoyed the two listens. Only tracks I really dug were Sympathy for the Devil, Street Fightin Man, and Salt of the Earth. Not a bad album, but not my favorite Stones album. Solid 3.
aight
the only "classic period " Stones record I have never owned. Mostly filler, to me this album has a far higher miss/hit ratio than "Exile". Hot Rocks has the essentials. Sorry, Brian
Strong first and last songs but didn’t do much to convince me the stones aren’t a greatest hits band.
Country blues, guitar parts get slightly repetitive but the inclusion of conga + other African/south Asian instruments make for an interesting sound that’s quite unique. 3.5
Some of this is too honky-tonk, a little boring. Trying too hard to be American gospel or blues. But I do like a few songs. Somewhere in between a 3 and 4 for me
I have not listened to this album before, and was only familiar with the two hits (Sympathy, Street Fighting Man). Of the lesser known songs, they range from Dear Doctor, which is pretty poor, to Stray Cat Blues, which I liked quite a lot. Jigsaw Puzzle is basically Sympathy for the Devil over again but less interesting. Overall, this is fine, but not something I'd choose to listen to.
mildly depressing aura about this album. it's boring and mediocre.
Not their best album. Sympathy for the devil and Street Fighting Man are good songs but the rest doesn't hold up. There are better Rolling Stones albums like Sticky Fingers. This one didn't have to be on the 1001 album list.
you know what i actually like the rolling stones
I feel often that with this generator I'm getting nicer and more open towards the albums I get, which is probably good overall, but it's making my positive-to-negative ratio feel slowly more and more lopsided to the former of the two. Luckily, I can count on The Rolling Stones to put me straight and remind me that my tastes and opinions are still consistent with when I started. For instance, here is the third Rolling Stones album to get a three star. Is it bad? No, in fact I could totally understand why someone would like, nay, love this, but it just feels so generic in a modern lense where Rolling Stones was falling so behind on the revolutions happening around them in music that they decided to fall back and rest on what they knew, and there can be merit in that, but what makes this more special past an admittedly great opening track. If I wanted music that sounded like this I would either go earlier into the 60's or later into the next decade, not give the very personal genres of folk and country to the British boy band. I''ll never deny Rolling Stones their iconic status, as they've certainly earned it from various track to track, but I don't understand so far what any of their albums as a whole work of art has done for the music landscape but seem like music your great uncle swears is better than the Beatles.
i've obviously listened to sympathy for the devil and that's a banger, then there's 3 mid tracks in a row but it picks back up at the end of the a-side this is a pretty easy 7/10 but the rather mediocre half of the a-side prevent any higher
Estuvo bien. Debería explorar más la discografía de sus majestades satanicas
huh. the rolling country bears. who’d’ve thought. good pacing. actually didn’t really care for sympathy for the devil 🚂🚂. jigsaw puzzle, factory girl, and salt of the earth were the standouts to me. stray cat blues costs the record a star. hate that we can’t do half stars on this webbed site. put me in a room with a gun with two bullets john lennon kevin spacey and mick jagger and watch me shoot jagger twice.
I actually didn't mind this!
Was okay, started amazing. Bit dull in the middle
I've found that The Rolling Stones are more of a singles band rather than an album band. That being said this album isn't too bad, everything gets overshadowed by Sympathy for the Devil.
This album was already in my regular playlist. A first, however - after listening, I actually removed some tracks from my listening rotation. There is such a think as too much honky-tonking
Owes more to jazz and gospel history than I’d realised. Although was a bit tired of the harmonica by the end….
It's cool
3/5 Best: Street Fighting Man Worst: Parachute Woman
Strong 6
Album starts strong with Sympathy For the Devil, but doesn't keep the momentum alive in my opinion. The first half is otherwise mushy and "Stray Cat Blues" is the standout of the second half. 3/5 purely because SFTD is a jam and Keith Richards.
Good album, crazy how long ago this was
Rock album
Sympathy for the Devil fuckkkkkkkkkk yeah. WOO WOO!!!! I love that slide guitar on Jigsaw Puzzle. Street Fighting Man is also a jam and the 5th(!!!!) song from Rage's Renegades album. Pretty wild in the first 114 albums. Also pretty wild that Keith Richards will be alive long after the crust of the Earth melts away from climate change. I took an Adderall today, might have to NIN after this.
Hope you guess the name. I didn’t. Interesting album with country style but nothing special in total. Just very well-balanced. I don’t want to listen it for a lot of hours. 4 in my old scores system. 3 in my new.
It's okay. I like a few select songs of theirs but it just becomes same same after a few songs.
I liked sympathy for the devil and street fighting man but the rest of the album was too bayou blues for me. Didn’t really feel this one.
i like it
Good but not great for me.
Never really given the Stones a chance, but this album has made me think otherwise. Good ol’ classic rock with a bit of a southern feel to it. Not bad!
This album is fine. Never been a fan of ‘Sympathy’, but went in with an open mind. It starts out as a fun album, but starts to lose me after a while.
It's Rolling Stones. Classic. Not much else to say.
i like sympathy for the devil
Not my vibe, but not bad. Fav: Dear Doctor Least Fav: Salt Of The Earth
Didn't sound too bad: kinda rocky but also had a lot of folk/country elements, wasn't an awful album with a couple of songs added to the liked, a lot of it sounded very similar sadly.
I really want to like this whole album, but then there are songs like "Dear Doctor" and "Prodigal Son" that ventured too far down the hillbilly road for my tastes. I really liked "Jig-Saw Puzzle" and if all the songs were like that, I'd rate this album higher
Not sure why this album felt disjointed to me. I guess it's hard to avoid comparing albums against each other when you get the same artist back to back, but it never felt like the whole package of Sticky Fingers. C'mon, that's a great joke - look at the album cover.
Great.
We have here an interesting album by The Rolling Stones that includes their best song ever, "Sympathy for the Devil" of course, and another anonymous 9 songs, which are pretty nice for a bluesy/rock background, but nothing else. "Beggars Banquet" is seen as one of the best rock albums of all time, and possibly the best record by The Rolling Stones. I definitely think that this is a massive exaggeration. It's an average plus album - it has great guitar solos written by Keith Richards, some exquisite bass and drum line, but other than the first song, nothing is catchy or too interesting. I gave it a good listen, but I wouldn't speak highly of this album afterwards.
Favorite/liked songs: Sympathy for the Devil No Expectations Street Fighting Man Factory Girl Salt of the Earth 5/10 Least Favorite Song: Dear Doctor Didn’t dig the bluesy songs as much
Mediocre, as stones always are
Decidedly boring
it’s a fine white boy blues rock album. they sometimes have sparse backing tracks and sometimes have extra layered guitars. the devil song opens the album and people fucking love that one. the rolling stones are fine. i cant see why anyone would call them overrated. it’s okay, while being a little boring. its boring, while being pretty okay.
Sympathy of the Devil is a fantastic song and the best song on the album. This album gets a little more country and I did not particularly care for it. It wasn't awful but not super enjoyable. I don't feel the need to revisit it outside of Sympathy for the Devil.
update: still underwhelmed
I just don't think this album is that great to be honest. Salt of the Earth is nice, Sympathy for the Devil obviously and I actually enjoy No Expectation quite a bit, but to me most of this things is no more or less than blues rock that wouldn't even get noticed if it wasn't released by the Stones.
Its the Stones. I liked it but in no rush to hear it twice.
First song was great, it went down every song though
Nothing too exciting besides Sympathy for the Devil
7/10
-Sympathy for the Devil- Without this we'd have never had the G'nR version so I'm thankful. This one didn't know when to end. BS aside that's a good song but I do like the GNR version better. -No Expectations- I have none going into this song. It ended and I wasn't paying attention. -Dear Doctor- Folksy. -Parachute Woman- Bluesy. Meh -Jigsaw Puzzle- This one is better, but what's up with the lyrics on this album? Sympathy was good, but these others are a bit lacking. -SFM- Yeah. It's okay. Pretty repetitive. -Prodigal Son- Be my swine? What is this? -Stray Cat Blues- Less bluesy. I like this one. -Factory Girl- Pretty sure this is objectively bad. -Salt of the Earth- This is one of my favorite Stones tracks aside from not knowing when to end. All in all I expected to like a lot more on this album but I didn't. These guys have some all time great songs. They also apparently have some strikes.
One of the better Stones albums
I can never really get on with a full Stones album. More of a singles band for me. This is alright.
