Reviews (page 9 of 13)

So this is apparently where the sound that made the Stones famous started. I get it but it didn’t grab me

Enjoyable, classic (: more folky and country than I expected.

Much better than sticky fingers. Still not a huge fan of the Stones but Sympathy for the Devil is an all timer. I’ll give this a 3.5 rounded down.

Seemed fine, nothing special though. I'm sure it was meaningful at the time

Never listened to more than song 1, I don't have too much praise but I enjoy the overall experience

Incredibly annoyed that I enjoy the musical stylings of the Rolling Stones.

This was good, I recognized some songs.

It was interesting to listen to, but Im not a super huge fan of the Rolling Stones. Sympathy for the Devil is an amazing song though.

another record, that I find most mediocre - despite its fame.

I liked this.

A lot of blues. Not bad, couple of familiar songs

Bluesier than I would expect from the Stones!

Pretty good,

Fairly enjoyable but a bit forgettable

Sympathy For The Devil is a great song, but I don't understand how people are so in love with this play-acting mirror-universe country shit. Like, I'm not one to complain about appropriation but this shit just rings really fake, like the blues at Disney World. They're talented, but something just doesn't sit right with me. They're better when they're not wearing those blues clothes. Just can't wrap my head around it.

My favourite was “Sympathy for the Devil”, solid album overall. First time listening to the Rolling Stones (except from the intro to Slow Horses) and would listen again.

it is ana lright album

Same vibe as station to station - background music for work or party, also something good to put on when you're with old people haha. No songs jumped out again but I did know/already kinda enjoy some of the songs. This is making me rethink my rating system so I might have to change the others...

Classic Stones, always good.

This is definitely the Stones era that I like, but apart from the ones I already knew, it's all a bit forgettable? I liked it, but I wouldn't make any particular effort to listen to it as an album again. And why for Christ's sake does Spotify insist on playing the extended albums, even when I've specifically clicked on the standard version? It's such a shit app.

⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5. Easily top of best openings to an album ever. Again, loved the Apple Music explanation on this one for the subliminal political messaging.

Sympathy for the Devil is an A+ song. As an inhabitant of the American South, I am so amused by English folks' impression of country music. Adorable.

I am not a huge fan of the Rolling Stones. I think this may have been the first time listening to this entire album. I thought it was fine.

not my thing, but very impressive that this came out in the 60s. legends.

I’d probably give this a 7 if it was a 10-point scale. I think it is objectively a great collection of songs, and maybe it can grow on me with more listens. I mean, I know it’s The Rolling Stones. But lack of personal familiarity has me rating conservatively. Peace.

Not sure if I’m a stones fan or not. Enjoyed it but wasn’t blown away

I've had a physical copy of this for probably 25 years, and have only listened to it maybe 10 times. The Stones are weird: They had some truly iconic rock songs on here - "Sympathy for the Devil," "Street Fighting Man" and, to a lesser extent, "Stray Cat Blues"- but all they really wanted to be was a blues band. They're not a great blues band. There's probably a lot of "you can't always get what you want" in there. The hits save this from disaster, but it's not a fun record to listen to.

Jep, hyvä rollarilevy tässä!

Sympathy for the devil is always a must listen for me. The rest of the album was so so...

Cohesive and compelling in its storytelling

Sympathy, Street Fighting Man and No Expectations are great tunes. Could leave the rest.

Sympathy for the devil is one of my favourite Rolling Stones tracks. But it drops off a lot after that.

Was hoping by listening to this album I’d understand why my mom is such a fan, but honestly was completely neutral the whole listen. Of course except for Symphony for the Devil, but maybe I’m just basic. Other great track was Salt of the Earth. So the intro & outro moved me but that was about it.

Chill gubbrock. Strange mix lyrics.

This first track is pretty legendary. Good album.

Very entertaining, yet some songs feel like a bit of a drag The energetic songs are amazing and far better imo then the laid back ones

I had to listen to this a few times Some good songs and good guitar playing but couldn’t help thinking it’s a bunch of English guys trying to sound like southern sharecroppers. Appreciate they love the blues but it came off a bit like stealing someone’s culture and making money off it

Really good. I can't quite latch onto it as something special though

obviously it’s the rolling stones. obviously it’s good. but i think the thing is i’d rather listen to blues music with non-mick jagger singing.

There's one song everyone knows from this album, and it's "Sympathy for the Devil". I believe it's the 2nd best song on "Beggar's Banquet". "Street Fighting Man" is the best (I think). The rest of the tracks are average. Unfortunately, I've got COVID and feel ill. 3 stars for "Beggar's Banquet".

As much as I adore the simplistic elegance of the album art, I think this record is a bit underwhelming. There’s some really great musicianship in parts. Factory Girl features some particularly lovely strings.

There’s better Rolling Stones albums.

of the Rolling Stones albums we've had so far, this was my favorite by far. i never expected this 1001 project to make me hate the Rolling Stones, but here we are. this album was pretty snappy, only dragged in the more countryish tracks.

Starts out on its highest note and drifts from there. 2.5 rounded up for being short.

Beggars Banquet by The Rolling Stones is a pretty bluesy album. The music here is fine but not great. The two top songs are, of course, Sympathy and Street Fighting Man. The rest of Beggars is just okay. Or in the case of Dear Doctor and Factory Girl, quite silly. There’s not much here to get very excited about for the album as a whole. As such, I can only get to a 3 for a rating. 3/5

Love they started the album with “Sympathy for the Devil.”

Stone Zone part 4. Out of the 900 odd albums that I have yet to listen to, this list seems really intent on recommending me these Stony Rollers. The last Rolling Stones album I was recommended was Aftermath, which had a bit of a silver lining. I liked "Paint It, Black", which I later learned was added to the US version and not the original UK pressing of the album. Not sure how I would feel about the album were that song not included in the version I listened to, though it's affirming to know that The Rolling Stones are capable of putting out quality music. This is quite good! I think I finally get The Rolling Stones, as this album is competent across the board. There isn't much to say more than that, really. It's of a consistent style and that style is consistently good. No Expectations was my favourite song on the album. I liked the more relaxed old country sound as opposed to the more lively tracks. Sympathy For the Devil, Parachute Woman and Salt of the Earth were also quite good. Mick Jagger's vocal performances are still something I'm not sold on, though they're not as much of a problem as I remember them being. In all fairness I started out with him on the worst possible note - listening to the pseudo-seppo vocals of Let It Bleed. Sometimes I need to filter Jagger's vocals out of the music in order to get the best listening experience (like on Stray Cat Blues), though for the most part he's pretty tolerable on this album. As a sextuple "must-listen album" award winner, I view it as mandatory for me to sit my ass down and read about what separates this album from the rest of the Stones' output. This album came from adversity. A return to form. Foreshadows a darker turn in their music - no clue what that's gonna sound like. Very successful in the UK and US. That's nice. It doesn't once explain that this album laid the groundwork from which the Stones would achieve superstardom, though I'm happy to do a little independent learning every now and then.

Great songs, not my favorite band overall.

I consider this to be one of the Stones' great records. Alongside Let it Bleed, released within a year of this one. And yet, besides one or two standout tracks, as an album it never gets even close to a 4 out of 5.

This is fine I guess - I've never really liked the vocalist, and the music is quite noisy, with each song starting to feel bit repetitive by the time it finishes

Pretty solid, but not their best.

There are some classics on her like “Sympathy for the Devil” and “Street Fighting Man,” but much of the rest I was neutral about, or actively turned off by (the country-rock tunes.)

I used to be a massive Stones fan though this really isn't my favorite of theirs

Enjoyable! The whiplash from Sympathy for the Devil into No Expectations was certainly something - I still don't understand why that song was chosen to open this album - but otherwise it was some solid roots rock stuff.

Liked this more than I expected but was also kind of boring

Late 60's Blue's inspired rock and roll music; ok but other than standouts mentioned nothing great and not my favorite Stones songs. Standouts: Sympathy for the Devil (though an overplayed song), Street Fighting Man

Hey that’s pretty good

I guess this is The Rolling Stones return to form album. In the time that definitely means something. To me listening almost 60 years later, it doesn’t. It’s a good album. But it’s not mind blowing. I’m not sure straight forward blues rock ever can be. Sympathy for the Devil is a masterpiece. The rest is good 7.5/10

Faktiskt rätt ok album.

This album follows the same pattern as a lot of their other albums. It starts with an all-time great song then devolves into solid but unspectacular blues/rock. Favorites: Sympathy for the Devil, Stray Cat Blues

It's ok, some good and some bad, I'm already hit or miss on the Stones so this is no different to me

it’s fine

More hillbilly than expected.

Так-то вроде неплохо, но в целом не очень воспринимаю эту пластинку. Кроме "Sympathy for the devil" песни какие-то слишком уж простые и музыка временами немного режет слух. Так что только 6,5 из 10.

half decent

Kužim da je legendarni album, okej, ali mi jednostavno nema dušu, iako sam odrasla na ovim pjesmama. Više mi je onako za neke seniore na partiju old is gold 😁 Bit će neka sredina recimo, 3/5, 5.5/10

Sympathy, street fighting, stray cat, salt of the earth - all excellent Otherwise …. Ehhhhhhhhhhhh

Enjoyed, nice blues album, with sone rock N roll stones in there.

I liked it, but not as much as exile on main Street.

The Rolling Stones are like 20% stone cold classics and 80% middling bluesy numbers.

It’s fine. Fun to listen to. The Rolling Stones are an interesting band because they really nail it on vibes and attitude most of the time, but they don’t seem to have very many great songs. I enjoyed this album, especially “Street Fighting Man,” but I don’t feel the draw to revisit it.

The wild thing about this album is it is so much more interesting than Nick Drake's and came out 2 years earlier. It doesn't have that late 60s early 70s vibe. A lot more timeless. Probably still falls into the trap of having only grew up with the hits, the non-hits aren't as good.

Good early stones work, loved the guitar and the overall feel but not many hits.

Bluesete, som en amerikansk roadtrip. Litt tyngre enn Beatles. Man føler att gitarsolo fortsatt er et ungt konsept

"Beggars Banquet" contains some of the Rolling Stones' most iconic tracks, including the monstrous "Sympathy For The Devil" and "Jigsaw Puzzle," which are truly exceptional. However, for my taste, the album's overall quality is uneven. While "Street Fighting Man" and "Salt of the Earth" are still quite strong, tracks like "Dear Doctor," "Parachute Woman," and "Prodigal Son" don't quite connect with me and I find them lows on the album and almost their repertoire. It's an album with clear highs, but the inconsistencies prevent it from being a favorite.

I don’t know, first track is amazing but I just feel the album is a bit monotonic

Not so good

when i heard Jaggar's first "ow!" on "Sympathy for the Devil" i thought "oh we are soooo fucking back". but i soon learned that (other than a few exceptions) I spoke way too soon. this is not a BAD album per se, and I think the production and performances from all the band members are very strong, but there's just something missing from a lot of these songs, especially the more politically oriented ones like "Street Fighting Man" and "Salt of the Earth". I can appreciate these songs for their historical context and how apparently they were so influential as to be banned from several radio stations at the time, but it also feels a bit like posh London boys playing at being working class. sort of in the same vein as John Lennon's "Power to the People". i think their cover of "Prodigal Son" fits in nicely with this political messaging too, and i'm a big fan of the arrangement they did. Overall, "Sympathy for the Devil" absolutely knocked my socks off, and i also really liked "No Expectations" and "Prodigal Son", but the rest frankly was a disappointment! idk if that's a spicy take, but we might be doing a little revisionist history/letting things slide simply on the sheer strength of that opening track alone.

i've heard this album before but it's been a while Sympathy For The Devil - 4/5 No Expectations - 3/5 Dear Doctor - 3/5 Parachute Woman - 2/5 Jigsaw Puzzle - 3/5 Street Fighting Man - 4/5 Prodigal Son - 4/5 Stray Cat Blues - 4/5 Factory Blues - 3/5 Salt Of The Earth - 3/5 Average score: 3.3/5 this is a huge improvement from their Aftermath album, that's for sure. it sounds like they solidified their blues sound since that album. the production sounds a lot cleaner here too, which i feel compliments their performance a lot better overall. none of the tracks were terrible by any means, though Parachute Woman was probably my least favorite. everything else was alright to me, maybe even good i don't think i've been made a huge Rolling Stones fan after hearing this from start to finish, but this was a decent release and a step in the right direction for the group in my opinion

1968. Blues Rock. 7.5/10 Sympathy for the Devil.

Two great songs, the rest just okay.

Bin leider nicht der allgrößte Stones-Fan. Punkte gibts für Sympathy for the devil, Street fighting man und das Plattencover

Sympathy for the devil is a great track, but I am more of a Stones Greatest Hits guy, so the whole album is not 100% my kind of thing.

They are definitely a singles band. This and gimme shelter have quite a bit of filler and then 2-3 amazing songs.

Feel like the Stones are either incredible, or painfully average This album has both

Sympathy for the Devils slaps, the rest is enjoyable but doesn’t really stand out. Narratively rich but not enough to get me to come back

"Sympathy For The Devil" what an insane classic I think that's clearly my favourite Stones' song. The rest of the album is good but I think it's not their best album, I mean not my favourite the other songs were good to listen to but not really catchy just good.

one of their most meh albums tbh

Country blues rock - not their best work but a cool album.

The Rolling Stones have made a lot of great music over the years. Unfortunately they've made even more mediocre music. Most of the singles are great and most of the albums have a lot of filler. So does this album. I'd say more than half of it. Favorite song by a mile: sympathy for the devil.

Pretty good bluesy album - enjoyed some world music influences which were big at the time. I’m trying to be more critical of my album reviews

Enjoyed the songs I already knew but got a bit bored by some of the rest.

I, for some reason, have never listened to The Rolling Stones before. So, I was excited to listen to this album. The music was nice, but not something I’d personally seek out in my free time. It was slow and relaxing.

Generally, I enjoyed the lyrics more than the melody. I like the narrative aspects of each songs which remind me of the comedic aspect of songs in... musical theater or musical films, for instance. 🥇Sympathy for the Devil 🥈Street Fighting Man

Some absolute bangers on this album.

Pre-listening thoughts: I wasn’t all that enthused with the other Stones record we got so I’m skeptical going into this one Post/during listening thoughts: this might be my most controversial statement ever about music but I think The Rolling Stones are like Rihanna of the 1960s. They have really good singles that got a lot of airplay but their albums are overall kind of weak and not really worth listening to. Like way weaker than their reputation would have you believe. But someone probably included them on this list because it’s the Stones and you have to hear these two or three songs from this album before you die, but not the whole album. I’m actually kind of convinced this album was included JUST because of Sympathy for the Devil. Either way, I think the Stones are maybe the most overrated group from this time period. And you have to be fucking with me that there are SIX Rolling Stones albums on this list and not one of them is Some Girls. What the hell guys. 6/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: no Fav tracks: Sympathy for the Devil, Jigsaw Puzzle, Salt of the Earth Least fav tracks: Factory Girl

The Good: We’ve got RnR royalty… The Bad: Again… The Ugly: Seems that country is very RnR too… What really is a Beggars Banquet? I mean, wouldn’t “Soup Kitchen” be a better term? Or… is it possible that the Stones knew they needed to reserve the word “Soup” for another album? I like the Stones, I’ve never seen a full concert live, but I’ve been to a couple—long story, for another day. I love Sympathy For The Devil, it is my standard road-trip kick-off song since the mid ‘90s. I can handle Street Fighting Man, a staple of music soundtracks… The rest of the album, well, I guess that’s where the Beggars come into play, as they can’t be choosers… This is the third album by the Stones which has presented itself on this list, and I am still keeping my fingers crossed that my favorite album shows up… cause if it doesn’t, well, then this list is just lacking in great music. I gave Exile On Main Street 5* I gave Let It Bleed 4* I give Beggars Banquet 3* and I’m being generous here...

Stray Cat Blues is a wild song in a bad way. About hooking up with a 15 year old

Yep, it's a Stones album. Street Fighting Man is an all time banger though.

Old, a bit twangy

Good álbum, relaxing

i'm not a big fan of the original, intended cover. what's the Beggar's Banquet? is it human shit? is it doo doo feces? gross. anyway, "Beggars Banquet" is a perfectly fine record. it's got some real iconic tracks, it's got some nice deep cuts, and i even like some of the folkier cuts near the end like "Factory Girl". my main issue with the record is that it has such great songs like "Sympathy For the Devil" or "Jig-Saw Puzzle", these great, daring compositions with great performances and lyrics that betray a smarter band than you'd initially think. then you get dull songs like "Dear Doctor" or "Prodigal Son" to follow them up. i can't really hate them, but i can't really muster up any love for them either. they're not sons or daughters, they're bastard, boring cousins, and they drag the record down. also, hot take time: i think "Street Fighting Man" kinda sucks! the song doesn't ever kick into high gear like how it wants to; it feels like a long intro to a better track taken out of context. you guys are not gonna like what i have to say about "Beast of Burden" either, but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.

Two classic songs do not a classic album make.

One really amazing song

this album is only on the list for the first song, the rest was mediocre

Not too bad of an album, but apart from a handful of tracks there's not much I'd be returning to in a hurry.

sympathy for the devil carries the album

still good but the previous one from rolling stones was better

As a kid, I knew a handful of Stones hits and a handful of Beatles hits. I always would say that I preferred the Stones, since their hits always seems a bit harder and edgier than Beatles hits. As a young adult, I did a deep dive into the Beatles and came out the other end absolutely floored. I've recently done a dive on the Stones and there's a lot of forgettable fluff in between a handful of hits. This album is no different. Yea, I can tell it's the Stones by their sound, which is good for something, but there's just not much that I can see as great going on here. Very middle of the road album.

Less an album and more a collection of songs. Some excellent songs, some mediocre. I enjoyed it, mostly. 3.5/5

3/5. A country rock album. I think there is a dissonance because I do expect a certain sound from the Rolling Stones, and although that is here, there are other songs that really fall out of line. Some are good, like No Expectations, but many of the other songs don't sit right with me. The Stones don't need a specific sound, but it still feels like experimentation they haven't quite landed yet. It's an okay album but not a lot to hold it as a great album. Best Song: Sympathy For The Devil, Street Fighting Man, Stray Cat Blues

This album surprised me. Has a bluesy and sometimes Western feel. Don’t really care for the vocals but liked how each song was really telling a story with the lyrics. Interesting and catchy instrumentals.

⭐⭐⭐ – – 3[.2] of 5 stars. Besides the opening track, and a few other standouts, the rest of the album just feels like the same copy-and-paste blues stuff, and didn't really do much for me. In my opinion, there are better Stones albums than this, and I feel that this album kind of only exists for the opener, "Sympathy For The Devil." I liked the rock-y guitar work on a couple of the tracks, such as the opener, as well as the piano and bass on "Jigsaw Puzzle," but the rest felt rather same-y. Favourites: Sympathy For The Devil⭐, Jigsaw Puzzle, Salt Of The Earth Dislikes: Dear Doctor, Parachute Woman.

Cool album

It was good but none of it lived up the the hype that the first song brings. 3.5/5

Rolling Stones... I like them, I think? Never a skip at least, loving many of their songs admitably limited to classic rock stations/playlists. Though still have never listened to a full album of theirs, but probably would've at some point. High expectations for this one. Sympathy for the Devil What is there to say about this song that hasn't already been said. Absolute classic. Great rhythm, edgy concept for the time and an all time charismatic performance from Jagger. Oozing coolnees. Iconic. 5/5 No Expectations Massive shift in both tone and energy from the last track. Alternating guitars are cool. Nice bass sound. There's something nostalgic about it though I've never heard it before. Piano at the end seals the song nicely. 3.8/5 Dear Doctor Bluesy start. Weird mix on the vocals. Not sure about the instrumentation. The voice... No that's terrible... 2/5 Parachute Woman Bluesy. Kinda basic blues rock instrumentation. I've heard other takes on tracks similar to this where it's been imo executed much better, not bad just not inspiring. Fine. 3/5 Jigsaw puzzle Sounds much better than the previous two tracks, much clearer recording. I like the progression. Some nice guitar licks. The bass sound is also great. Great synergy within the band. Groovy piano. Catchy chorus. Fun track! 4.5/5 Street Fighting Man Loud guitars. Sitar? Wish it was implemented more. Great vocal performance, gritty yet showy. Finally got a more psychedelic element in the end, great! Good. 3.5/5 Prodigal Son Folky. Sounds like he's playing a character. Sparse. Lyrics paint a vivid image. Fine. 3/5 Stray Cat Blues Great intro. The bass playing stands out. Suspect lyrics... The chorus sounds fine but the lyrics... Hope this is some satire that I'm not getting. Uncomfortable. 1/5 Factory Girl Nice rhythm. Great acustic guitar. Folky. Hope this girl isn't underage... Nice violin solo. Fun track. 3.5/5 Salt of the Earth Weird stereo effect on the vocals. Buildup to the chorus works well. Don't care much for the vocals. Comes off as propaganda. Didn't care for. 2.5/5 Really mixed reaction to this one. Some great, and some questionable tracks. The performances from the band/vocals were the highlight on this album. I however feel some of the song concepts were slightly dated. Fave track. Sympathy for the Devil Least fave track. Stray Cat Blues

Blusey Stones is good Stones.

Not a bad blues record. But cool it’s The Rolling Stones taking it back. Singles were really important

Pretty good, maybe not my jam though

I like this album! I almost never do when it’s The Stones. This is the most likeable I’ve found them.

This album marks the beginning of the Stones' return to their bluesy rock & roll roots, a sound which they would go on to perfect during their projects in the late 60s and early 70s.

I got 2 rolling stones albums in a row both were fine

It's a good Stones record. Top end. Obvs there's only a few that are truly great. I think Let it Bleed and Exile both top this, but it's decent. Two obvious all timers kick off each side. Aside from those you have Salt of the Earth (another song I prefer covers of) and Stray Cat Blues, both of which decent. And some pretty good laid back blues. No Expectations the highlight of these. It's good. Am I itching to put it on again? No.

If we live in a world where creative artists only have a finite amount of Awesome to pour into their creations then I think the Rolling Stones used all of it in just 2 tracks. Sympathy of the Devil and Street Fighting Man are both great…. The rest no so much.

The intro song is a defining Stones tune, but also a Mt. Rushmore track for all of classic rock. Still holds up and sounds amazing. 630M listens, that's royalty status. Then you throw in "Street Fighting Man", a total classic & cover song favorite, & "Stray Cat Blues" (listen to Soundgarden's version!). I wasn't a huge fan of "No Expectations", "Dear Doctor" or "Prodigal Son" which were so far from "Sympathy" and bordered on odd. I'm amazed by the Stones but most of this album was just above average for me outside of the classics mentioned above. This one wouldn't make my list but I love the cover and the essential tracks. 3 stars for the missing glue songs that would hold it all together for me.

this website is giving me a great appreciation for music farther before my time than i usually listen to

Not really my thing, but I appreciate that The Rolling Stones exist.

I don't get the hate. It's inconsistent, but a fun rock album.

The music is well strung together, even if it's a bit basic and derivative. I'm inclined to ignore the muse and just listen to the music, so I suppose 3 stars seems fair here.

Sympathy For the Devil and Street Fightin' Man are classics but the rest of the tracks don't uphold anything cole to that standard.

Some bangers some mid.

A bit of an odd mix of songs, perhaps one their greatest commercial successes followed by rag tag blues, country western rock. Nine of it is particularly bad, nor is it very impactful. Just ok.

I quite like Sympathy For The Devil. The rest is okay.

Sympathy for the devil is great, the rest of the album is meh

They definitely created a very bluesy sound on this album, which served Sympathy For the Devil well. The rest of the tracks were good but apart from its reputation I’m not sure if it’s a real classic

Sympathy for the devil is incredible the rest is just credible

It was OK. Quite folks more than rocky.

I expected this to be a boring album with a great opener, but to be honest 3 or 4 songs caught my attention. Good one.

Folkier than I thought it would be. Sympathy for the Devil is a great song.

Sympathy For The Devil was a #1 tune, others less successful. I never found The Stones very enjoyable , more of a Beatles fan. 3/5

I haven't really listened much to The Rolling Stones even though my parents are big fans who have attended many of their concerts. This album was good and enjoyable but nothing too special.

This album was just OK. There are better Stones albums out there but this one might scrape it's way into the top 5. For me, most Stones albums are 1 or 2 good/great songs surrounded by a bunch of filler of widely varying degrees of quality and this one is no exception.

Average for me.

The obvious and undisputed highlight is Sympathy For The Devil. Nothing else comes close, and the rest of the album feels like bonus material because of that. However, putting that and the possibly influencing Black Ops nostalgia aside, you are still left with an okay late 60s rock album, that isn't too long and varied enough to be enjoyable throughout. 3.5/5

3/5 There are some top moments on this album, like the beautiful, melodic No Expectations, the disgusting banger Stray Cat Blues and the fantastic Salt Of The Earth, but overall it's fairly average, frustratingly so at times. Street Fighting Man has an amazing intro and great progression, but then the verse is a boring monotonous meh and the chorus isn't great either. Sympathy For The Devil 3/5 No Expectations 5/5 (FAV) Dear Doctor 3.5/5 Parachute Woman 4/5 Jigsaw Puzzle 3/5 Street Fighting Man 3/5 Prodigal Son 2.5/5 (LEAST FAV) Stray Cat Blues 4.5/5 Factory Girl 2.5/5 Salt Of The Earth 4.5/5

I liked the overall feel of the album more than the other Stones albums so far. It felt more like an album, rather than a bunch of songs they recorded.Even the down moments still held my attention. Still, I'm not a huge fan, and I don't think that anything other than the album opener is really worth going out and getting for me.

Yeh I quite like the stones - prefer them to the beetles 7/10

Pretty good, man.

Its the stones innit. They write good pop songs, they set the standard of the time and its very well done. All music is stolen from elsewhere so ignore the people crying foul over appropriation.

Rock, 1968 -> 3

2 good songs, mostly generic Stones's bullshit.

The Stones. The Rolling Stones. Strangely didn't feel like a Stone album. Great lyrics. Great sound.

Empieza y termina muy bien, el medio está meh.

la verdad que si no fuera por street fighting man y sympathy por the devil, es un disco mid

I think this was better than the last Stones record I got from this list (Exile On Main Street) which possibly suggests that they got worse over time. But for the most part this was pretty decent to listen to - though I did skip the last minute of 'woah'-ing on the first track

Best of the Rolling Stones so far but while I enjoyed it I still wouldn't say I'm a Stones fan still. 7/10

Decent without been memorable

Listened while playing Fortnite. I saved a few songs from the album, it’s different sounding I don’t love it but I don’t hate it

The Rolling Stines can fill out a Greatest Hits release with ease, but I have yet to find what I would call a good Stone's album. Does this one really deserve to be on the list? There are two amazing songs (Sympathy for the Devil and Prodigal Son) mixed in with a a bunch of unforgettable bluesy snoozers. I'm not denying their talent as a band, just that this album deserves to be on here when many other albums are more complete and polished. 2.5⭐️ (one star for each hit, 0.5 for the rest)

3.1 A classic Rolling Stones album. And by classic I don't mean great, I mean it's the same recipe as all the others - a very small number of absolutely unbelievable songs (here it's Sympathy for the Devil and Street Fighting Man) which makes these arguably the greatest Greatest Hits band in the world, a few stand out gems amongst a plethora of faux-americana, honky tonk-esque tracks that just makes for overall unpleasant and forgettable listening. There's a reason why the worst latter-half Beatles album by far was their americana-influenced Let It Be. Honestly don't get it, after possibly 50 listens thanks to family and exes. The two aforementioned songs the only thing keeping it afloat above the 3's

SFTD is a banger and an all-time classic and there are a couple other solid songs in there, but it's far from being the best RS album.

i sorta never gave the stones a chance and certainly do not love them ... i think i was surprised at how 'experimental' this record was and by that i mostly mean that they used a lot of 'world music' percussion... funny i almost basically entirely associate the stones with martin scorsese movies at this point so listening to this did sorta make me feel like I was in a martin scorsese movie... anyways i dunno always mixed with these guys - i liked the country tunes but I don't appreciate the like ... oozing horniness on the record cuz i think the dudes are a lil nasty ...

Decent. Street Fighting Man is the best song on here. Sympathy For The Devil is a good song but for me has been played to death. You might be familiar with Sympathy being partially inspired by the novel The Master and Margarita, but what you might not be familiar with is it is worth your time to search YouTube for “master margarita cat gun fight scene”.

A good album but loses a full half star for the closer salt of the earth - a patronising tune about 'hard working people' written and performed by a bunch of tax dodgers.

Es gibt ein paar Super Nummer. Dann wieder langatmige, sich ständig wiederholende Stücke.

Beggars Belief this made Banq

Take away the singles and it doesn't leave a lot of decent tracks on this album, goes to show that Rolling Stones were one of the best singles band and putting together a cohesive album was always a struggle 3.5*

Mick’s mighty mouth makes mediocre music, made my morning middling.

Favourite songs: Salt of the Earth, Stray cat blues Beautiful lyrics really elevated this album from an ordinary rock album of the 60s to something slightly better

Najlepszy póki co zespół Sotnesów, który się trafił. Tak nieironicznie mi się podobał, pierwszy ich krążek, który w moich oczach był powyżej poziomu neutralnego. "Sympathy for the Devil" naprawdę fajne, "Dear Doctor" całkiem spoko, podobnie "Prodigal Son". "Stray Cat Blues" mi się podobało, dzisiaj by nie mogło chyba powstać, o ile nie zrobiłbyś z tego rapu. Kusi danie czwórki, ale nie wiem, czy będę wracał. Takie mocne 3,5. Serio wolałbym 10-stopniową skalę.

When we started reviewing this list I thought that Stones were safe and mellow but it's fine. It is not fine I regret giving 4 to the previous album and I won't make the same mistake again. 3/5 - perfectly OK. Devil song is a banger though.

All these stars are for Sympathy for the Devil, the rest of the album was ok

Didn't hate it but let's be real the rolling stones aren't thaaat special

I'm obviously a Beatles over Stones guy but have always generally liked the Stones but not loved them enough to go album listening. I've relegated most of my listening to Hot Rocks Vol 1 and 2. So of course, the only two songs I knew on this album were Sympathy for the Devil and Street Fighting Man. Both are perfectly fine tunes but were never even close to my favorites when listening to Hot Rocks. The rest of the album is fine. I really noticed Prodigal Son as a Zeppelin prototype. Zepp obviously perfected the blues rock but I could see this song as a guiding light that would shape Zepp. Stray Cat Blues was quite raunchy in a good way and that raunchiness is probably what drives most Stones fans, especially those in the Stones over the Beatles camp. I couldn't help but thinking that Ted Nugent took Stray Cat Blues and made it more pop accessible with Cat Scratch Fever. Anyway, solid outing from the Stones.

Devil’s music.

An explosive lead-off single. But the rest of the album is mostly rock-ified blues, which is not my favorite genre.

Sympathy For The Devil might be the highlight? Also really liked the fifth track, Jigsaw Puzzle. Sounds a lot like Dylan or the Beatles. I think The Rolling Stones are at their best when they’re not pretending to be American bluesmen.

Sympathy for the Devil, Jigsaw Puzzle, Street Fighting Man, Salt of the Earth I'll admit I'm often unimpressed by the Stones, and this album wasn't really an exception. Sympathy for the Devil is energetic and fun, and there were a couple tracks (noted above) that stood out to me, but for the most part, I'd just rather listen to something else. 3 stars.

A bit folky , a bit rocky. Not bad. I listened to this while cooking

not the best

Surprised by the southern roots-equestrian instrumentation throughout the album. As someone not very familiar with the Stones, I pictured a much more classic rock sound to accompany one of their albums placed on a list such as this. The harmonicas, piano, and guitars created a very different atmosphere. I think the big lack, at least to me, was the lack of anything super catchy or sticky

Different from I was expecting. Needs a 2nd and a 3rd listening 3⭐ out of 5 30/Nov/2024

One of their bluesier albums without a doubt. It's a good album, but I do find it a bit light.

Musically enjoyable, yes, but they lean so hard into replicating American roots and blues that, at times, it comes across as caricature.

Favourite track: Sympathy For The Devil.

A fair mix of styles but only a few standout tracks.

Decent album, saved a couple songs. Good listen though, unlike Gorillaz debut.

Back when the music was not overly-produced. A powerful rawness

It’s fine.

Pretty cool. Didn't feel overly special. Sometimes I don't get how the Stones got the "Sex, Drugs and Rock n Roll" tagline. Because a lot of it feels pretty tame. A good album, but I won't come back to it.

I’m glad the Rolling Stones stopped with the psychedelic garbage and became The Rolling Stones™ but I don’t think we needed the album when they first made that pivot on this list because this is mostly just okay. That being said, any album with “Sympathy for the Devil” and “Street Fighting Man” on it is probably better than most other albums, no matter how uninspiring the other eight songs are.

I know it's a classic Stones album, but like every other time I've tried to get into them as an album band, I find there's too much bluesy filler. Some great tracks though and nothing I especially disliked

its okay broke my stream of 8 great albums in a row damn

I like a couple of songs on this but I still find Jagger painfully annoying. I highly recommend Soulsavers’ cover of “No Expectations” with Mark Lanegan singing. Way better than the original, which I often find is the case with Stones tunes.

Like every rolling stone album I've ever heard... Some absolute bangers and some dross filler

A few great songs, a few good songs... And a number of not so good ones.

While having some great songs on here, this was really a disappointing album. If you want great Stones, check out Sticky Fingers.

I mean Sympathy For The Devil is a great song. The rest is pretty much just standard/generic-sounding Rolling Stones. It's not bad, played well, fun to listen to, but I can't imagine that anyone would really care about this album if it wasn't the Stones. I would guess that this album is on this list just because of the opening song but I feel like surely there was another record that could have been included in place of this one. 2.5/5, will round up for the guitar solo on Sympathy For The Devil which has to be the coolest guitar solo with the worst sounding guitar tone of all time.

Loved sympathy for the devil. Everything else —> was ok

A good stones album.

Sympathy For The Devil and Street Fighting Man are the standouts, some decent other tracks on here, but nothing close to those two.

this is probably the first time i have ever sat down and listened to a full Stones album. That being said, it isn't bad, but it also isn't great. I knew Sympathy For The Devil and Street Fighting Man before coming into this. The album is fun, but for me, it's nothing crazy.

The music is enjoyable, but I can’t say anything stuck out as amazing. I didn’t realize The Rolling Stones had such a folksy tilt.

I’ve never been a big stones fan but I did enjoy this more than I expected. Their bluesy rock sound is somehow a little more endearing now that I’m a little older I guess. Something for me that I just can’t get over on any stones song is mick jaggers voice. I feel like it’s either u hate it or love it. There is a decent variety of instrumentation here so that’s cool. A strong three.

One hell of a start with "Sympathy for The Devil"! The rest of the album is pretty forgettable though. By no means did I dislike it, but it's not a lasting album for me outside of the first song.

The first song: Wow great, 5/5! The rest of the songs: 2/5.

I like the blues sound but too many slow tracks for me

Two banger: "Sympathy For The Devil" and "Street Fighting Man" The rest of the album is just solid Rolling Stones. 3,5

Древний роковый альбом, для своего времени это было по бунтарски и довольно смело, сейчас это просто качественный альбом, с придурковатым вайбом. Для меня довольно скучно.

Too boogie woogie, great singles though

Better than some of their other albums. Still doesn't blow me away though. It doesn't reach me on a deep level. Good party music though.

Great instrumentation and pacing. Lots of unique tracks. Might need to give it another listen to full appreciate it. Definitely something good here. Highlights: Parachute Woman Street Fighting Man

favourite song: no expectations

decent

Much like a previous one, I'm surprised how much honky Tonk country there was in this album. Definitely some massive classic songs though

I did use a private session on spotify for this one. This project has been having me listen to a lot of Rolling Stones and I think Spotify thinks I am a fan now, I am not. Sympathy for the Devil is a classic, followed by whiney bluesy rock. I don't like Jager's voice, I don't get it.

It's just the Stones man. Good for who and where they are.

You can’t start with Sympathy for the Devil if you’re not going to keep that energy going throughout

Love the instrumental, sounds like steely Dan if bod Dylan was singing. The piano and acoustic guitar could be played without any vocals and still would be great. Best songs to me 1. Sympathy for the devil 2. No expectations 3. Stray cat blue - wtf 4. Salt of the earth

What a disappointment. The greatest Rock n Roll Band ever! So should be great!! Opens with Sympathy for the Devil, one of the BEST tracks ever!!! Brilliant!!!! Follows that by bring us back down with the beautifully wistful No Expectations!!!!! Superlative!!!!!! But then goes downhill from there. Street Fighting Man has a bit of oomph! Salt of the Earth is good. But the rest. Beautifully played, great production, but just a collection of mediocre country blues. They sound as if they aren't really trying. Should add that if you want mediocre country blues then you want the Stones playing it!

Rolling Stones is always a good listen. Pretty easy listening for this album.

47 years and I finally get it. I just don’t like Mick’s voice.

Ehh. Besides songs I already knew, nothing made me want to listen again.

lowkey one of my favorite stones albums

I didn't like this one quite as much as Let it Bleed, but still a decent Stones album. 3.4/5

I've heard the album before. Sympathy For The Devil is one of the all time great rock tracks. Street Fighting Man is also solid, but the rest of the album feels like filler.

Two great songs.

Started with one of the all time great. Too bad the later portion of the album couldn't match it. All good, but only that.

Started out strong, but the flip side was definitely weaker...

I've found that I like the idea of The Rolling Stones more than their actual music. Outside of Street Fighting Man (my favorite track of theirs and maybe a top track for me all time) nothing here sticks with me and becomes very repetitive. Like a bar/saloon band riffing while some rando says some shit. Still good, but not resonant.

Listened to Monday 19/05/25 - in the evening driving in the car with my dad AL: I really enjoyed this album, the use of slide guitar which has a really raw recorded feel, as opposed to overproduced which you can often hear, reallly adds to the ‘down and dirty’ era of the stones we experience here, right after their drug bust, writing about all they were disillusioned with. While I don’t think this is as strong as ‘Exile on Main Street’ or ‘Sticky Fingers’, I think this is a very solid record all round, and am glad to have listened to it. FT: “Sympathy for the Devil”, “Jigsaw Puzzle”, “Prodigal Son” 3/5

I truly want to see what everyone else sees in the Rolling Stones. Any talks about the greatest rock bands, even greatest artists in general, have the Stones somewhere near the top. But no matter how many times I listen to their most celebrated output from the late 60s to early 70s I'm left feeling underwhelmed. Beggars Banquet is no exception. It's 40 more minutes of perfectly produced blues rock that flows in one ear and out the other. I don't even dislike it! Put Beggars Banquet on and I'll happily sit and listen along, but other than Sympathy for the Devil none of it leaves with me. *Heard before.

Beggars Banquet is a pretty decent album just like what i would expect from The Rolling Stones. This album relies more on the country elements of this band rather than the harder rock elements (they are still here) This might be the reason why i don't like it as much as Let It Bleed or Sticky Fingers. Those two albums had more memorable songs than this one. There still were some pretty good songs here, Sympathy For The Devil, Street Fighting Man, Prodigal Son and Stray Cat Blues were all some pretty good songs and definitely helped this album immensely. This album is good just like the other Rolling Stones albums i have done but its not as good as them. Best Song: Street Fighting Man Worst Song: Dear Doctor

Looking at the wiki, it makes sense that is was an album that got back to their original sound. It sounded like an early album. It's very country and blues, which I'm not a big fan of. It reminds me of early Beatles, which I'm also not a big fan of. I prefer their later sound.

I don't think I've ever listened to a Rolling Stones album before today. I know that they are pretty legendary and such, but I just have never gotten around to it. I enjoy their track 'Paint it Black' but there's no track on this album that catches my attention in the same way Standouts Sympathy for the Devil No Expectations Salt of the Earth 3/5

Yet another Stones album. This does have my second favorite from them, Sympathy for the Devil, and for that I'll give this one a 3.87. Many styles on here, as usual. I just don't like Mick's voice, or his face.

Kicking off Beggars Banquet with the howling screams of Mick Jagger on "Sympathy for the Devil" is quite a statement. I was buckled in, but nothing else on the album warrants such reckless abandon. We get some country and blues and the repetitive "Jigsaw Puzzle" before we hit the reset button and begin the formula again with the rockin' "Street Fighting Man" and following it with more country and blues. The braggadocious machismo redirects from street fights to threesomes with 15 year old runaways or trying to find a down to earth factory girl. "Salt of the Earth" is a pub sing along meant for the everyday man. So far, this follows a Rolling Stones trend of having some great songs on albums, but as a whole, there are some misses.

This album is certainly the Rolling Stones.

Yeah totally fine! Appreciative but not a huge fan. Bluesy coolness.

Not my favourite album of the stones

Ok. Not a huge Rolling Stones fan. Might not come back to this one.

Man, Sympathy for the Devil is sooo good. The rest was just okay, and that's a bummer. 3/5

7th best....

For me, this is certainly not one of the best Rolling Stones albums (early 70's Stones is my sweet spot). I will concede that this is the album that opened the door to greatness though. There's a bit of experimentation, but delivered conservatively. In the near future this sound will gel.

Highlights: Sympathy For The Devil, Stray Cat Blues, Salt of the Earth. In a nutshell: The Stones find their groove- rock and country blues, but a little dirty. Beggars Banquet is in part a reflection of the music styles which influenced the band - blues rock with a bit of rock and roll flair. Also, it raises the question over appropriation - if you acknowledge your source and actively "give a leg up" for the minorities and/or underappreciated who inspired you, is it appropriation? I'm unsure. I'll have to think it over. Although the blues rock and roots rock songs crammed in the album were tedious for me, there are good songs on here. I can hear the origins of their trademark sound; the sound we identify the band with today. And the best is yet to come. Overall: 6/10

I've run out of comments to make about The Rolling Stones' albums. They're pretty unremarkable.

Wouldn’t choose to listen to again. Not bad, just not my thing. Could hear and appreciate the technical proficiency but largely left me cold.

I found this to be a more middle-of-the-road album for The Rolling Stones. It's not their best, but it's not bad either. Their two prior albums were more psychedelic rock, and I personally wish they had stayed on that path because I really enjoyed those. This one, however, leans more towards blues rock, so if that's your preference, you'll likely enjoy it.

This is very bluesy. It's ok. Also folky at times. It's ok

The singles are excellent, the rest are kinda meh.

It's ok. Starts with one of their best (if not THE best) songs, but never reaches that high again. Most songs are ok, some better. Musicianship and guitar playing is great. One very problematic song, but that's a whole other issue.

Cracking opening track and then into material that was new to me. Track 2 was good, not too much of the slide guitar to make it too cringey. But then what happened? A few awful tracks where I don’t think they knew what they wanted to be. It’s good to have a variety of styles on an album I guess, but this was awful. Back on track with the excellent ‘Street Fighting Man’, and I also liked the closing track with its gospel vibe. So it seems I prefer the Stones when they stick to their script.

I like the woo woo song at the start, but then started to lose a bit of interest throughout. Not bad by any means just not the most interesting

The first track overwhelms the rest of the album, but it’s an interesting mix of country and folk music influences.

I sort of like the Rolling Stones, but I dunno, this one didn't land with me.

I know it’s a classic but just ok for me.

I'm noticing a pattern with stones albums. There are a few hits and then the rest of the album is blues-y mush. The 2nd half was better though.

Don't get the big deal

The Stones are best when doing their own thing and not trying to sound like someone else. Here, you have essentially two songs where they sound like themselves, and we all know which two those are. Advice: Mick, you're MICK FOOKIN' JAGGER you don't have to try to sound like Bobby Dylan or Muddy Waters. If I wanted to hear those guys I would go listen to them. Keef, wake up, tune up, find a lane. Again, when you do your thing, it's genius. Charlie Watts, just keep doing what you're doing - this album needs more drums. Bill Wyman good luck in your future endeavors, no notes. Nicky Hopkins, good job, calm down a wee bit please. Thanks.

Not bad.

Not a ton of hits for me, but the hits do hit well. Sympathy for the Devil is one of the best rock songs of all time.

Solid project but not that special in my opinion.

i found this album bang-average. the guitar riffs were not particularly exciting, and the vocals seemed to not change for the whole 39 minutes. some songs redeemed the album, such as sympathy for the devil and jig-saw puzzle, which felt mor developed and thought through, although sympathy for the devil went on for about 3 minutes too long. personally, i feel that the rolling stones have considerably better work than this, and that this album is not their strongest

Liked it, didn't love it. Not my favorite Stones album.

Seems like every Stones record is just -honkeytonk admiration -classic late 60’s rock doowop -that one song everyone on planet earth knows -more honkeytonk -Mick having a moment of actual humane introspection -oooohbabeyyy you’re a honkeytonk giiiirl from upper Virginia god I wish I grew up in Appalachia Now I will give this album some credit for diverting from that method a slight bit and leaping away from the 60’s classic rock sound into something often more subtle and nuanced. And the story telling is pretty vivid too.

Never really love The Rolling Stones but I enjoyed this one -- especially thinking of it as a juxtaposition of what the Beatles were putting out in 1968

Just earlier this week I listened to Exile on Main Street, which I reviewed and bemoaned the Stones for only having a few tracks I enjoy. Just a few days later, I pull a second Stones album, and wouldn't you know I like a lot of it. Sympathy is an obvious classic, probably my second favorite song from the band, but tracks like No Expectations and Jigsaw Puzzle also impressed me. Again, I've tried Stones records before, and their most beloved (Sticky Fingers and Let It Bleed) didn't do much for me. I guess I was just listening to the wrong ones.

Sympathy for the devil <3

This was fine nothing special

Could not get the voice of Nick’s sports song guy out of my head but I liked the tunes

I don't understand The Rolling Stones. 3.5

Rest of the album doesn't live up to the first song (sans street fighter man)

I knew the Devil song and nothing else. I like the overall sound and would enjoy hearing it some more, but even after 3 listens no other track really grabs me.

The singles do the heavy lifting, but even the other tracks are solid, if unexceptional.

I thought this might be a reminder why 'best of' albums exist. Was pleasantly surprised by 'Jigsaw Puzzle' and "No Expectations' (and couldn't possibly be surprised by the one song everyone knows.) But most of the rest of the album was forgettable to downright bad ('Dear Doctor' especially.)

Is okay

For my 200th Album... Pretty decent. I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. I always have this different version of the Rolling Stones in my head. This album really touches on the old rock and roll. The rock and roll where piano was a driving force in songs, and there was some strong blues influence in the guitar. At least that's my impression of this record. There are some staples on here that still hold up to today. One song in particular called Dear Doctor is a prime example of why Mick Jagger is great and awful at the same time. His backing vocals, which are in an off key falcetto, mimicking that of female vocals, singing with his lead vocals, to which are simply what we know and love, are probably the worse sets of vocals on a song. I don't know what they were thinking. I bet it was drugs. Probably drugs. Good record. A good change up from a lot of the records I've been getting. There's just something about good ol' rock and roll.

Clearly a good album with a few hits but the Stones are just getting rolling here

Beggars Banquet without Sympathy For The Devil would probably have been really dull and not worthy of this list. Far from the best Rolling Stones record in my opinion. Almost 2 stars.

WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO Fucking brilliant The rest is okay, but Sympathy is what makes this album legendary. So that's why I must give this 3.1*. And that's exactly the problem with the Stones. They have legendary songs, but (apart from Exile on Main Street and Sticky Fingers), they don't really have legendary albums like the Beatles had. Stray Cat Blues and Street Fighting Man are songs that are also pretty cool, but not amazing. It's released in the same year as the White Album from the Beatles and you've got to admit, that one is much more legendary and timeless than this one.

Like most Stones albums - a couple of all time iconic songs, and a bunch of others to round it out.

So acoustic and folky, love these layers from the Stones

Great guitar playing but some of the songwriting doesn’t age well by my standards. With that being said it does stick to a nice distinctive style throughout, which was actually quite nice.

Pretty generic rock. Absolutely crazy that people put this band on the same level as The Beatles.

Okay. Sympathy for the Devil is the best song on this album. Overall sounds too country or something.

Surprisingly good actually. Twangy, Mick Jagger style. A kind of country/ folksy Rolling Stones album.

Is it considered to be awesome because it's the Rollings Stones or is it truly awesome? Hm...if the same songs were created by a band - not the Rolling Stones, would they still be awesome?

Sympathy for the Devil is an all-time rock classic. For my taste, I'd grade it a B. I feel like I've settled in to not liking the Rolling Stones and this album did not cause me to reconsider.
