Reviews (page 5 of 8)
As entertaining as this album can be, there's only so much I can get out of this kind of music - at its core it is empty which is okay. That said, this album is about as much as I can ever see myself enjoying this genre.
I don't hate Def Leppard but I don't love them either. "Rock of Ages" is a good song, though.
Great 80’s hair rock
Some great classic rock anthems here. If you went in expecting anything else... idk what to tell you... Some of it got too samey but still a fun ride.
Ee må godt være der, men det for lidt i halvt tempo... Første halvdel kunne ligeså godt have været AC/DC eller Guns'n Roses Light.
7/10
6.5/10
It's not terrible, but it could have been a lot better with a better singer than this 3rd rate Robert Plant. Some songs are alright, some are cheesy. Favorite song: stagefright
Fun album - great hooks, great melodies. And Photograph is a fantastic song. Glad this is on the list.
That was a fun flashback
Heard this album a lot on MTV when I was a kid.
Heavy Metal 80’s hair band…..album is ok…reminds me too much of junior high school, I hated junior high school!
I’m not a lover of the type of rock music Def Leppard put out. I always feel that it is MOR rock designed and polished specifically for FM American radio stations (maybe they are DAB now?) I did purchase their orchestrated greatest hits album last year as I felt I need a Def Leppard in my collection but this will be as far as I go into their discography. This album is OK every now and then but the formula for each song is the same so nothing here to challenge or learn something new. 3/5 8/5/25
It wasn’t awful but the fact that Pour Some Sugar on Me wasn’t on here suggests that we have more Def Leppard coming and I’m not sure we need that.
Fairly standard hair metal, not a bad listen.
Classic 80s. Other than the hits, this was pretty basic.
After yesterday's Metallica - which I did not like - I thought, oh no, here we got again. But to my surprise, I liked this. Not what I expected, and that's a good thing. Listened to it all the way through. Not saying it's going in my regular rotation ...
Classic example of big hair rock. Saw then play a couple of years ago and loved it
This is glorious 80's hair band rock and roll. Catchy and fun while not afraid to belt out some over the top exhortations to the brighter side of sex, drugs, and glam rock. It is hard to navigate between nostalgia and concrete critique, so I'll just say, give it a listen. It is a fun and wild ride you won't regret, but probably won't revisit very often.
Hooky, overproduced album brought back a lot of memories. More like a greatest hits album with some great bangers "Fooling," "Rock of Ages," "Photograph." Some duds as well.
While the 80's hair metal scene has lost it's power, Def Leppard are still legends. I would give up my left arm to see them in concert, just to check off that box. However, while this album has a couple classics, the rest of the album can't hold up on it's own. ~ 3 stars
It's classic Def Leppard. I didn't hear anything surprising from this album. I mean, I guess it's pretty great for what it is - polished pop/jock rock? I dunno. You know those bars that are really popular with a younger crowd, and visually they're really slick looking places, but when you go there you're just like, "why is everything sticky, and what is that smell?" Yeah, this album is the aural version of that bar.
3.5 - Cool Vibes!
Ok
This album was everywhere when it came out. Hits were best listened to in the Strip Clubs of the times. In the light of day not so much.
3.1 2x
Like the best parts of the hot rod soundtrack
Solid classic rock
Painfully 80's. Aside from the single 'Photograph' eminently forgettable.
Pretty fine... I think they call it dad rock. I'm a lot older and less drunk than the TA but still enjoyed it a quite a bit
Being honest, was a meh album but a couple of songs
Sheffield’s finest rock hair metal band 🤘
If you like mediocre hair metal then this is your thing. 7.0/10
liked it, not alot but yeah
Definitely a quintessential Hair metal album. Heavy 80's rock with withstanding hits. Nice to hear the other songs on this album.
it's good to know my perception of Def Leppard was 100% accurate
Sounds like underaged drinking in all its glory. It’s just sappy pop songs with guitar dive bombs.
rock rock til you drop- 4 photograph- 4 or 5 stagefright- 4 too late for love- 3 die hunt the hunter- 3 foolin- 3 or 4 rock of ages- 4 coming under fire- ay yo. 4 action not words- 3 or 4 billys got a gun- 3 or 4 i think i wouldve been fine if i didnt hear this before i died
Cheesy as expected, but honestly pretty fun.
I imagine this was annoying / grating when it first came out but I can appreciate it now
Billy’s Got a Gun
Historically, was never a big fan of Def Leppard. Actually enjoyed this album more than I thought I would! Solid 3.
Surprisingly a pretty good time.
I don't know what to do with this. I kind of like it in a vacuum, and singles like Photograph are permanently etched in my brain. But I listened in the purest environment possible, a 4 hour road trip, and it didn't capture me, I turned it off with a few songs left. I actually skipped out of Foolin' - great chorus but the rest of the song sucked. I wanted to like this more than I did because Hysteria is permanently etched into my 11 year old brain. I finished the album this morning and it was better as background music, but that's faint praise. Can I rate this the shrug emoji? As an aside, when the first track started playing, I genuinely thought it was AC/DC, a thought which kind of makes me want to kick my own ass
It’s fine, 80s rock. Pretty much what I expected.
Olvidable, pero estuvo bien. Sin más.
Not as good as Hysteria
Photograph, F-f-f-foolin', Rock of Ages and some other great songs that elementary school me got in trouble for blasting.
I feel like this record has a lot to answer for in how influential it sounds like it must have been on 80s hair metal. I didn't want to like it but "Photograph" is pretty good. Not as good as Ringo Starr's song by the same name but still respectable and I love it that in both the singer is essentially making the same complaint. Is their name a tribute to Led Zeppelin? p.s. If this record were made after 9/11 I doubt they would have gone with this cover art.
Ah, the definitive Def Leppard album at long last. (Still a mystery why this collection also has "Hysteria".) It sounds *exactly* like I (vaguely) remember from the rockin' 80s, no better and no worse. I was kind of hoping that the videos (which I never saw back in the day, thanks to a cable/MTV-less upbringing) would add to the effect/quality of the songs, but sadly they too are exactly what I kind of expected, although the video for "Photograph" is actually quite disappointingly boring and uncreative, and while it's fun to see their drummer with both arms, I do wish he wasn't such a big fan of the Union Jack short-shorts. I'll admit that the only highlights on this album are their impressively numerous singles; the rest is *very* forgettable, making for a fairly uneven album. If I had enjoyed Def Leppard more as a teenager, this would easily be 4 or 5 stars for nostalgia alone. But there was always something kind of...generic...about them that made me trend towards the somewhat harder-edged bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, even the Scorpions (none of whom were all that much more interesting musically, admittedly). I was also struck by how much Joe Elliott occasionally sounds a *lot* like AC/DC's Brian Johnson, albeit Elliott's growls aren't nearly as impressive as Johnson's.
I am not a big fan of Def Leppard, but there is no denying that this record has some of their most iconic songs. There are a few filler songs here. It brings back some memories.
This collection didn’t contain any of my favoured Def Leppard songs. Quite mediocre.
Another powerful album that gets you going but it's just not exciting for more listenings.
When people say 80's music their heads usually go to synthpop and new wave but often forget that the Rock sound found here was also ubiquitous. The hits are the hits and have been in the zeitgeist since their release. And no, I am not going to deny that "Photograph" is a fun song. The non-Singles all have that same generic 80's Rock sound, which turns out should just be called the "Mutt" Lange sound. A lot of it sounded like AC/DC to me. Mostly I can do without that slick 80s rock production. I wasn't much a fan back then and not much has changed in the ensuing years. I did find that "Stagefright" wasn't too bad though. I'm not going to ever come back to Def Leppard but I can understand the appeal.
This is a fun record, and while "Photograph" got most of the attention, there are several other great tunes on here. That said, it's not revolutionary...
I have a fondness for metal but this isn’t quite a 4 for me—not sure why but it was more in the enjoyable than the listen again category.
85% of the rating is nostalgia. Never cared for Def Leppard, still don’t, but it reminds me of some friends I had in high school who liked them a lot. All in all, not the worst album. Not the best either.
I don't know if I've ever actually listened to Def Leppard before, but it sounded almost exactly the way I would have expected it to, but maybe a little bit less heavy.
Fun stuff. 3.4.
I didn't really enjoy this album, because I don't enjoy the genre, but I can understand and appreciate why it was on the list. Personal enjoyment: 3/5 Relevance to this list: 5/5
Strained and uncontained Soaring vocals, rowdy riffs Over the top fun
first listen forgettable
Too Late For Love // Die Hard The Hunter // Comin’ Under Fire // 2.5/5
yuh get it i guess
Whenever I hear this band, I always feel like they have the ability to be really good but their music and arrangements are just really basic and bland
For all my fellow St. Louis locals, you know this album is basically half of the KSHE 95 playlist.
It's definitely what it is, I'll give it that.
3.5
Def leppard became a joke to us 90s alternative kids and this hasn’t aged well but it is much less terrible than I expected going in
Loud, catchy, and 80s as hell. This is one of the best takes on pop metal (AKA hair metal) that you’re going to find, but I do find it starts to get repetitive at a certain point. Best song: Stagefright
Good rock album.
Good 80s rock. Some good guitar.
From back in my day
Not a fan of rock in general.
I feel a little mixed about this album. The popular songs are really great, especially Photograph, but also Too Late For Love, Foolin', and Rock of Ages. The other songs are kind of filler, and some of them are a little annoying (e.g. Rock! Rock!). That leaves me somewhere between a 3 and a 4.
Hard Rock
Bluesy 80s hair metal. Had me tapping my foot the whole time, but I did own this album as a kid so I'm deep down familiar with it even if I don't remember specifics about some of the songs. Decent background music.
Fine (but not quite peak) hair metal with a hearty helping of cowbell 3.3
Anthem rock.
oh man when the band starts off the album singing about Rock as a concept you know its going to be a long listening session. Photograph is a slick radio single. I enjoyed the solo on Stagefright a little too much. Too Late For Love is again another slick radio hit.
It’s better then I’d like to admit but somehow I cringe when I listen
Def Leppard all polished up for radio saturation. This album is the sound of a band whose already doing well making a bid for the brass ring. The music is totally in line with expectations for "hard rock" of the era. For all its posturing and gestures towards being tough this music is fairly benign with all the rough edges sanded off.
Fun 80’s hair metal album that bring pure energy. Is it amazing? No. Should it be on this list? No. But it is, and it is entertaining enough to rock out my morning.
3.75 Squarely in the center of '80s Metal.
The Good: Who doesn’t like a good fire? The Bad: Still don’t understand what a scope has to do with a fire… The Ugly: The fact that this album wasn’t called Nostradamus… I got to say that listening to this album has not proven the challange which I thought it was going to be. I found myself boppin’ my head left and right, the occasional fist-pump into the air… I had a good time. And that, for me at least, is what Def Leopard has always been about: having a good time. Mutt Lange did a great job with this album, even if, on one too many songs, it seemed like DL was trying to be another AC/DC. 3* because, at the end of the day, it still is cheesy and should not get a 4*, unless I change my mind overnight...
Album includes the smell of rubber during a Trans Am burnout
This is pretty great and very listenable but really there's only 1 great song on this record (Photograph). and 1 other really good song (Foolin'), and the rest would be fine to lose to history really. It was a fun listen but I won't miss it if I never put it on again. Sidenote: I've always wondered how those 80's hair-metal vocals were recorded. Such an interesting sound!
Riiiigtig hårmetal haha. Hvis jeg er i mood kunne det godt blive en 4, men jeg synes det flyder lidt i baggrunden og har svært ved at huske de individuelle sange
Lots of huge hits. Super 80s styling. Pre one armed drummer. It's fine I guess. By the way. Who needs bass? This record.
Rockin 80s hair metal. Idk, not really a fan of the genre, but this album has enough catchy hits & good energy that it's at least an enjoyable listen.
It’s pretty fun throughout the album
Better of the rock
This album is more the generation after me and many of my students were fans which prejudiced me against the group a bit - but on a clean, fresh listen, it's pretty good. A bit one-note at times, though.
Cult band.
Reminds me of being at my dad's house
Correcto para aficionados al heavy.
An o.k. 80s hair metal album with a few interesting moments. Woo. 2.5/5 -> 3/5
Last album (Hysteria) was from the one arm era -- lets see if this one is any more full-bodied. I've heard Photograph about 1000 times in my life and I don't think I've ever missed it after it stopped playing. On one hand, its a fine song -- well-written hook, catchy as hell, plenty of cowbell... on the other hand, it just feels like a "diet" version of Van Halen's Jump covered in far too much hair spray. Die Hard the Hunter is every bit as silly as the name would suggest, but I'll be damned if I wasn't having fun. Cheesy ass synths and bloated as hell production are peak 80s hair metal, but this one actually had some substance behind it -- a riff that you can sink your teeth into. Foolin' pulls the carpet for a separate 80s trope -- super clean produced acoustic guitar and tender vocals. I really don't love hair metal, but I'll be damned if this isn't catchy. Honestly I'm not even disappointed in our parents' generation -- I get it. On the other hand, Rock of Ages is dorky as hell. I can safely say this album is not for me, but for glam/hair metal it was better than most. This is a soft 3 for me.
I like this one more than Hysteria. The Rock of Ages intro always gets me because I expect Pretty Fly to come on. Foolin' and Die Hard the Hunter are other stand outs. Better than Hysteria, but still not quite a 4.
Def Leppard sucks! -Joseph Dirt Not really my kinda rock but def had some jams. Also didn't realize The Offspring sampled that gibberish at the beginning of Rock of Ages. Low 3. Janie's Got a Gun >>>> Billy's Got a Gun
precision engineered pop/hard rock
Not my type. Music is nice, some solos also, but the lyrics suck ass, like having sex with some woman all night is a weird thing to sing.
Fun, but not my taste so probably won’t listen again.
Hair, metal. Strong performance (kind of tame by today's standards). Solid blast from the past
Photograph Foolin' Rock of Ages are the big radio hits. Well produced and polished sound, but not my genre.
Boring 80s pop metal
As I have stated in several of my reviews, I heard the radio hits from this record (against my will) about 1000 times too many when it came out and didn't like it. Now that about 40 years have passed, I still don't love it, but I am able to appreciate it as "not terrible". Actually, it's quite well done...just not really my thing.
Pure corn
I can recognize Pyromania is a decent album that has a few hits and some pretty approachable arena rock songs. I'd probably take this over Hysteria but either one is just an OK album that works in the right setting. Fine for a single listen but they don't do much to stay with me at all. I didn't realize Def Leppard sold as many records as they did. They have a handful OK songs but nothing that really lands with me. 2.72 stars
I love it when you get to join the dots between music - Rock of Ages must be a fave of the Offspring. Much more musical than I was expecting.
First cassette tape I ever bought. I was 10 yrs old. Still awesome. I understand why people don't think it belongs on this list. This album launched a 1000 other terrible albums from other bands and I'm here for it! Haters can eat a big fat d*&k!
Still not a Def Leppard fan. They can surely rock but they aren't for me.
When I seen a second Def Leppard album on the list my initial thoughts were do we really need this along with Hysteria. After listening I think we do. Ignoring the fact it’s overblown over the top and just don’t take it too seriously, this was a real good fun album. You can see how it help bring metal/hard rock to the mainstream. It’s not in the same league as Hysteria, but still well worth a listen.
Mindless, fun rock, that packs a good punch, especially in Too Late For Love. Basically, I could write the same review for this as Heaven 17 (which I'm sure the Leppards will be thrilled about) - I enjoyed it, but won't be seeking it out.
It's interesting to hear the template for Hysteria being developed here. Tight production and playing from the band from start to finish makes for about as pleasant experience I could expect from a genre (glam-metal) I'm not overly keen on. Many of these tracks were staples at rock nights back in the day and have aged surprisingly well. I was even tempted to give this 4 stars, but I'll save that for their next album.
Deducted a point for the awful cock-rockness if it’s opening track.
Wasn't really my scene, but they were definitely in the air. Sure I know the words, and I probably secretly do like a few of the tracks. It was an era.
🤘🏼
This album is fine. You know the hits and the rest is filler.
Not bad
Classic album
AC/DC with chorus'd vocals and more synth. Good but not great.
I thought it was pretty good, I only listened to half though
Hysteria is better.
Hysteria has a lot of hits. This album has several. It's just that the voice gets to be a bit much for me. I can take it in small doses and enjoy the occasional song, but listening to a whole album isn't something I really care to do with this group.
it may be no Hysteria and it may be cheesy but it has Photograph. Foolin' and Rock of Ages!
Love the hits on this one. Hard to believe it was ‘83. However overall it is an uneven effort with the in between songs feeling weak. No deep cuts.
This version of Def Leppard features the use of 10 band member arms. They really hit their stride on the album after this where they cut the arm number down to 9.
3.5/5. Nothing revolutionary but there are 3 tracks on here that are certified bangers and deservedly continue to receive airplay on your favourite classic rock stations.
I remember Def Leppard blasting down the halls in my college dorm. Head bangers playing their air guitars. I get they are legendary. Just not my genre.
A classic and genre-defining album for a genre I’ve heard too much of. Still, it’s the best of the best at what it’s going for.
this is glam rock at its very best. overblown and theatrical to the max, when it works it 100% works. bridges and hooks that work their way into your brain and never leave
I thought this was good a few songs in but by the time I got to the last couple songs I realized they all sound the same. What has 7 arms and sucks?
I mean sure. Sign of the times.
Feels like British KISS (at least this album, albeit less about love). Pop metal confuses me, feels abit commercial at times, album is overall not bad but lacks abit of originality.
Brings me back to childhood…
Enérgico como siempre
Felt a bit like generic hair metal. Kind of wafted over me for the most part, but I did find myself groovying along at times.
So ironically 80's. At the time I remember family members really grooving to Def Leppard and I likely grooved along too. I still love Photograph, but the rest don't really hit the same today as they did then. Not anything wrong with it, but now that we are out of the 80s the dramatic riffs and action movie oriented lyrics don't elicit the feelings they used to.
I was a big Def Leppard fan in my youth, so their music is nostalgic for me. A few fun hits on here, and definitely love me some Photograph, but overall this just sounds like any other 80s hair band now.
A mid album, not the biggest fan of their stuff Top tracks: Photograph, Rock of Ages
Okay.
Not bad, not incredible, just not bad.
Бодрый скуф-рок. Как я уже говорил про гансэндрозес - пока трансформация в скуфа не прошла полностью ставлю 3
This album was a big deal hair band favorite when it came out. It was not something I gravitated to but it's worth a listen.
103/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑
There are a few good songs in here but the sheen of the production wears thin after a bit. Maybe that's just a contemporary sensibility. Still I won't be running back to this record, though I wouldn't be in a hurry to turn it off if it was already playing.
rock till you drop isch seehr silly aber finds no funny. photograph het afoch e saaaugueti hook. und de prechorus isch super catchy. oke s review wo bi qobuz debi isch beschribt huere guet wie pop das album eigntlich isch und wie overproduced aber s funktioniert. stagefright findi etz weniger catchy aber au no funny bridge und so. too late for love findi scho ehner öangwilig und d drums sind mit de ziit immer glich und huere viel. die hard the hunter meega langs instrumental. foolin will e rockballade sii maaann isch das cheesy. oke. nicher wirds rockiger und het meeega viel cowbell haha. rock of ages isch typisch jooo RROCK emfall ich lieb ROCK okay jo für da hets recht viel synthibass. comin under fire isch au wieder mega en ROCK song. aso finds nice aber jäää ACTION! haha sie wüssed dass cheesy sind. vocal harmonies schono viel hahah wenigstens hets gitarresoli und so. guillermo tiene una arma. der wilhelm hat en pistol. haha s foht so ernst ah und de prechorus isch soo cheesy mit de vocals hahahah. gitarre ide zweite strophe isch cool.

Listened and enjoyed but forgot to review. Saved 4/10 songs so I’ll give it a 3
3 I never realized how much the lead singer of Def Leppard sounds like Brian Johnson. I’m not saying they sound exactly the same by any means, but there are a few moments here I swear it comes damn close. Anyway, there were two songs here that I enjoyed, and those happened to be the two songs that I already knew prior - Photograph and Rock of Ages. To its credit, Photograph really is a fantastic tune and quite possibly among the best from this era of hair metal, and there’s a certain charm/borderline sense of epicness to Rock of Ages, if a bit on the nose and cheesy (though, for better or worse, I always assume I’m about to hear The Offspring whenever I hear the opening now). The two are also the only Def Leppard songs I’ve seen live, in this case, at the Taylor Hawkins Tribute Show. Coincidence they ended up being my favorites here? Probably not. Either way, shoutout to Miley Cyrus for killing the vocals on Photograph. As for the rest of this album - yeah, pretty standard rock fare for the era. Not a lot stood out to me, though, I will say, as douchey as this is probably about to sound, Too Late For Love went up a couple points in my book when it provided me a sense of “walk-up song” as I approached the squat rack to attempt my max at the gym. For as much as I think this album tries a bit too hard at times, it’s mostly enjoyable overall. Definitely not any kind of all-time great in my book, but I’d never complain to hear anything here mixed in the shuffle.
Old School rock and roll!
A decent slice of pop hair metal. Well produced.
The drummer had two arms on this album, but we now know that he could play these songs with just one. I am not supporting this freeloading sandbagger.
Soild arena rock. Very nice tone on the guitars. Overall nothing mind-blowing but still a lot of fun.
I've never purposely listened to Def Leppard before but this wasn't as bad as I thought it would be...
relatively easy listening classic hard rock - enjoyable and good melodies, albeit a little repetitive.
80s pop rock does not do it for me.
C+ Rock Rock (Till You Drop) 3 Photograph 3 Stagefright 3 Too Late For Love 3 Die Hard The Hunter 3 Foolin' 3 Rock Of Ages 3 Comin' Under Fire 3 Action! Not Words 2 Billy's Got A Gun 2 This was pretty boring. Sorry Def.
My little brother loved this album back in the day. It makes me laugh that it made this list. Pretty straight-forward middle of the road stuff.
Big no thx
Rock ochentero, de película de los 80s, instituto.
Not too bad for the genre (just not personally my favorite) and there are some surprising and intriguing moments. Definitely makes sense to include on the list at least from a historical perspective.
I sort of like the style, but I feel like it all blended together and nothing stood out to me. Not bad, not great.
Great album to have on the list! Def Leppard is one of those bands I always knew of but was interested to actually listen to. So ideal for the list! I enjoyed it. I hope we will get more from them.
Did anyone else’s dad refer to Def Leppard as Blind Cheetah? Just mine? There are a couple classic songs on this album and the rest has that quintessential 80s hair metal sound. Nothing too wild on here, just some solid rock. The only thing, is like most hair metal, it all eventually blends together. I’ll give it a three because I enjoyed it and Photograph is probably one of the most famous songs of the era.
3.5
Rock ochentero, de película de los 80s, instituto.
Sounds like music for a cheesy rock n roll musical
Good 80s rock
Good sound
I feel like this would be awesome at a concert, but not to just listen to
I would have hated the 80s. 2.7.
Meh
3++
Surprisingly good... knew a LOT of these songs from the radio. A couple of skips.
It was great yeah yeah why are there only rock albums on hete
not my thing but still good
It's decent pop-y rock! But I grew up with this being the norm, so it doesn't really track as innovative for me.
Rock! Rock!
Fun listen.
Gefällt mir.
this simply did not give me any strong feelings
No parts that I super disliked but yeah, it was just fine. I kind of wish that the vocals were louder or like pulled forward from the music. I found it hard to tell what they were were saying because it blended too well with the music
Not usually a hard rock fan but these songs are just so darn catchy. I think further listening would bump this up a star
Because it was better than the others, but I can’t say I’ll listen again.
Good music that I didn't pay much attention to
Glam metal has never been my genre, and Def Leppard has never rocked quite as hard as they claim to for my taste. Still, songs like “Photograph” and “Rock of Ages” have a certain poppy charm.
This album is like the definitive 80's butt rock album for me. It's not totally for me, but I see the appeal; the blend of gated reverb, square-wave synth and 80's high gain power chords with multi-tracked vocals is a powerful sound. And the beginning yell of Stagefright sounds 100% like Dr. Rockso! All fun enough to get a medium score from a genre that might otherwise rate poorly.
Was ready to not like this after Hysteria, but this is the better album by far, even though it's very glam metal-ish. Decent album despite me not liking butt rock in general. 3.25/5
Get the sugar because it's pouring time! I'm just going to end up listening to a bunch of the hits, no need to listen to this full album, shit rocks the corporate casbah
Yeah it was alright. Gets your engine reving.
I'm not F-f-f-foolin', oh, f-f-foolin' F-f-f-foolin', oh, f-f-foolin', This is a classic.
A couple absolutely great songs ... but after listening to Hysteria last week, this album couldn't live up to that one. Still a solid 3+
I struggled a bit at the start but then a few of the hits came in and it perked up and then I just went with it. Fun, ridiculous rock.
Netter Rock
Aika perus hardrockplatta. 2,5/5
OHs nos. Fine sure. But not four stars.
Their first two albums were the best hard rock records AC/DC never made . Then they moved Stateside to make this and their fans never forgave them. And so it’s a good job the record was so modern, relevant and with good enough tunes that the Mutt Lange production would make them global megastars with this and the next record. It’s all in the production it seems. The intro to Rock Rock (til you drop) heavy with keyboards, the more lush feel than High and Dry and overall, well, slickness. Photograph caught the zeitgeist and win then America. Quite rightly. Elsewhere though, the songs aren’t great and this Eighties production jars. Die Hard the Hunter jugs along in a less satisfying way than Iron Maiden were doing at the time and Too Late For Love isn’t a strong enough ballad to get them into that soft metal market. Yet. That would come in 1987 with Hysteria. Rock of Ages is a commercial enough second single. You can almost see the blueprint for Pour Some Sugar on me. Interestingly, the live album with the deluxe version is far more balanced with tracks from the first two albums too and a less glossy production. Pyromania was a prototype for Hysteria. Which makes it an interesting - if not satisfying - record.
One of the few British bands that fared better in the U.S. than the UK, at least in their formative years. I wasn’t a big fan of DL until Hysteria, but this album isn’t as terrible as some of the reviews make out.
Surprisingly good, was expecting worse, but it didn't blow me away either.
Rock ochentero, de película de los 80s, instituto.
For what it was and when it was, it's perfect. I'm not sure how much it holds up in 2023, but it's still a fun listen.
Fairly enjoyable
I see this album as the good ending of a band like Bon Jovi. It still isn't anything special, but at least there are some competent tracks present on this album to make it stand out a little bit. Stuff like Rock of Ages and Photograph are at the very least enjoyable in the moment, and there are some solid hooks for hair metal. Again, it isn't something worth going out of your way to listen to, but I can only assume this is on the positive side of the glam metal movement. The fact that said positive side only reaches a 2.5 for me is not a great sign, however.
Comment veux-tu que Def Leppard ait une quelconque crédibilité dans ce générateur si même mon père n'est pas fan.
ça gueule de partout dans la joie la plus totale, ce qui n'est pas pour nous déplaire
Joa net so schlecht. 3 Sterne. Wenn ich 2.5 geben könnte würde ich das hier tun.
Not usually my sort of rock but this is a pretty fun and not dumb album as you might expect. Photograph and Stagefright are the standouts
Never been much of a fan of a lot of 80’s “hard rock,” the late 60’s- 70’s are just so much better. Usually change the station when a Def Leppard song came on, not sure why. This album wasn’t bad and I didn’t feel the compulsive urge to turn it off like in the past. Not sure if it’s bad enough for a 2 star, maybe 3 is better? Very cool that they have a one-armed drummer.
Only like 4 good songs on the whole album. The rest just sound like noise.
2.5/5. Pretty generic and boring 80s rock. It's not bad, but like I said, it's boring.
Xlassic
I think we never have enough Def Leppard, but I guess I would enjoy it much more if I had listened to it some years ago.
Pretty classic classic rock.
i can hear the influences on 80s hair metal all throughout the album, but its not exactly its zenith
Here it is. The 50th album. And on Thanksgiving too! I'm genuinely shocked that I've managed to have the dedication to doing this for 50 whole days. So, is Def Leppard's Pyromania fitting for an occasion like this? Not really. This is a very basic rock album. The writing is fairly simple, the riffs are made to be catchy, and it's a very accessible album as a whole. Does this mean that the album is bad? I wouldn't say so. I enjoyed listening to this album. I just don't think it's anything too special. Bands like this thrive more on their standalone big hits than their full-fledged albums. Overall, this album does its job of being an accessible metal album and that's about it. It's fun and cheesy, but not exactly a masterpiece. High 3/5.
Hard rocking. Very powerful vocal/chorus parts. Stylish. 3.5/5.
chock full of classic rock radio staples. solid album that just falls of a cliff at the end, the last three songs are absolute filler. highlights: “rock! rock! (til you drop)”, “stagefright”, “foolin’ “…
I liked it. Several familiar songs. British hard rock but still good. Not every day, but good occasionally.
Lyder lidt som en parodi på 80’er rock, men det er fedt nok
Some really good sounding music on this album. Some of Def Leppard's most famous songs, but also some very forgettable songs at the same time. Sometimes can sound repetitive. "Photograph" and "Rock of Ages" are classics, but not exactly an unskippable album.
This is actually enjoyable, would listen again
I've always felt this album sounds overproduced and too clean, and I hate the sound on the snare drum. Regardless the songs are catchy, and this and Hysteria will always be fun listens.
Rock ochentero, de película de los 80s, instituto.
extremely 80s glam rock with synthy cheesy goodness. kind of overstays its welcome, but I can see this being the bee's knees back in the day
Not their best but fun enough.
This was a fun listen. I haven't heard some of these songs in decades. Fun 'turn back the clock' listen
Classic 80s rock. A few that still play on the radio. 7/10
3.5/5
Aged but still a solid album. 3.5/5
2.5/5
Favourite tracks: photograph; rock of ages
Second DL Album for me and it wasn't quite as great a surprise as the last one, this one started to slide towards more what I expected. Still a decent cheesefest.
One of the best examples of 80s hair metal out there. Photograph, Rock of Ages, and Foolin' were big hits off this album. It definelty sounds dated listening to it now, but at the time it was huge. It was ok
Not to my personal taste.
A few good parts every so often but this aged pretty badly
Cat: some songs are classic, heavy, dancey, poppy. But I didn’t realize the singer could be so Angus Young screechy. Great guitar work. AJ: PHOTOGRAPH!!!
Not adventurous on any level but solid, prototypical, 80's hair band metal here.
Cool rock album but songs don’t sound unique after halfway through
Better than I thought it would be. Not original but well executed
Solid album, very cool, nothing spectacular but a really good listen!
Seems like a good influential album
standard issue butt rock but I won’t lie, was fully in by Rock of Ages
Ahhh hair metal. Def Leppard during this time were basically one of the most well known ones, and they really did do a damn good job of representing this genre. There's a lot of good riffs and a nice mix of pop and hard rock all over this album, the only thing I'd say is that is all blends together a little too well. Photograph slaps though.
Some songs are too much on the heavy metal side for me, but I like the guitar sound of Phil Collen.
Not too special, was over before I knew. Nice sample though
Very unbritish rock. Joe's voice is better in later LPS. About 5 superior songs including standout "Photograph". High 3.
Fun
Rock of ages!! 😎 fun listen but all the songs sound the same in my head.
Ok
A real 80's soundtrack, with a sound that could slip into any classic 80's movie
Classic
I think I enjoyed this more than Hysteria. That being said, I did lose a bit of interest over the course of the album. Some songs are a bit too similar to each other. I like two songs on here, and the rest aren't bad, but I am indifferent to them. My favourite song was Rock of Ages.
ok
I'd say 3.444. Just not quite a 4. But its got something.
This one is a little more metal than Hysteria. Still fun and still interesting to listen to but not as many songs worth a repeat listen. 3.5 stars
Det var faktisk bedre end jeg regnede med!
Can't believe this is considered metal. I would consider it stadium rock. All in all a good album but probably not something I will seek to buy. 3/5
18.04.23. Вполне себе сносный глэм-метал для больших стадионов. Довольно приятная музыка, сделанная в духе своего времени.
100% agree with Jacob on this one. Even though I do still like this more than I once expected, and think it is certainly better than a lot of music by Def Leppard's peers of the era, Pyromania just doesn't quite hit for me (with a few exceptions.) They just hadn't quite refined the balance yet that they'd achieve on Hysteria. Nothing I found distasteful necessarily, just found songs blending together and not quite grabbing my attention. A solid 3.0.
I had slightly less fun with this Def Leppard album than the last Def Leppard album we got. Something about this one felt 40% more cheesy, and 40% more “normal?” than the other one. There were some classics though. “Photograph” is amazing, and that’s the kind of thing I want all their songs to me. “Too Late for Love” is so hilariously cheesy in the beginning with “somewhere in the distance….” intro. And yet. I love it! There’s just less of that in this album. For my money I’d listen to their next album more, but the energy is there, the fun is there, I just know what they’re capable of. 3/5.
Nesten parodisk generisk pop-rock. Men det funker jo (litt?)
Def Leppard is not a terribly original band, and seem to typify the melodic pop metal genre of the mid to late 80s. However, they do have a somewhat unique and recognizable sound even if it’s derived largely from the hard rock greats of the 70s. This album does have quite a few memorable hits and though I don’t find this album particularly phenomenal, it was a fun listen.
Not a Def Leppard fan. Lot of popular songs I recognized but just nothing I'd put on myself but I aint complaining if it comes on.
Extremely accessible, somewhat mindless, quite energizing.
Not as fun as expected. Photigraph rips but the rest was forgettable.
Unashamedly soft rock/hair metal. Standard rather than stand out. I enjoyed it for was the fun romp it is
dad rock
Meh
1983. Photograph, Foolin', Rock of Ages
Just sounds like 80s credit music. There are gems in here though
Great guitar sounds and production. Honestly I love everything except the vocals. Just can't do it.
Not as good as I hoped
Loved the singles when I was younger but I feel like I’ve outgrown this.
Basic 80s rock
Du hard rock FM assez idiot et rigolo tellement c'est kitsch et daté. Cliché à tous les étages, ça s'écoute sans déplaisir, mais avec un plaisir plutôt coupable.
Gym metal. Something to make you throw up devil horns on the stairmaster.
Fun classic rock. It really my style. High 3.
A lot of this was, frankly, pretty awesome. Some a bit forgettable. Joe sings in that weird distorted head voice that was popular in the 80s. The singles are great, they were the most well known to me. Also, Billy's Got a Gun - great song to end the album with.
I really love the beginning of Foolin’. Also, Photograph, Too Late for Love and Rock of Ages are seared into my memory because of MTV.
I understand why this album is on the list. I approached it with trepidation and already decided on my rating prior to listening. Somedays this project is work and adding a listening task to my daily to-dos overwhelms me. So what do I say about Pyromania? I get why metal folks dig this. Can't deny that Rock of Ages had my toe a tapping. I really admire the band's commitment to playing together after the accident. I liked hearing Andre share some of the production minutia and commitment to details the band brings to their art. "Gunter gleiben glauchen globen" helped up this Deutschophile's cool factor even though it's not German and I readily shared that with the hot guys who would sing it when I brought up my love of German. But at the end of the day...I simply do not enjoy metal. It's an effort. But I'll pump up another star from my bad attitude going into this.
I don't know why I remember this story (if it deserves that moniker) but way backnin the early 90s one summer I often found myself sitting in a study carrel in the science library of a large Midwestern university, aimlessly reading the graffiti when I got bogged down in whatever I was reading. I used to write down samples I found particularly noteworthy, on of which was "Def Leppard sold out!!!" At the time I thought it was wild someone would feel inspired to make that announcement in like 1993 or whatever, it occurred to me while listening to this that they probably wrote it about this album when it came out and it just never got cleaned. Anyway, it's hair metal, competent fast rock with, like, super dude-bro lyrics sung in that particular way. Fine, would not seek it out.
So, this is their radio friendly album huh? Well nothing really stood out for me.
Eh, hair metal - I never cultivated a taste for it. This didn't actively piss me off, I guess. Fave track - "Photograph" ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Glam metal. Blandito.
Solid
Def Leppard is like McDonalds. It isn’t fine dining, but you know exactly what you’re gonna get and sometimes, that’s exactly what you need.
Probably an important step between dad rock in the late 70s to cock rock in the mid 80s. But I like dad rock and think cock rock is a bit silly , so this is not really much of an evolution to me. Not unpleasant though.
I don’t think I’m the demographic for this album but it was good
Not really my thing but it was enjoyable while it was on
To quote Maxwell Smart, "The old patented Mutt Lange big anthemic chorus trick". He's a bit of pop genius the old Mutt (wouldn't you love to go through life known as"Mutt") everything from AccaDacca to Shania Twain! I love the Def, they were up for it, knew their audience and gave them what they wanted. I knew a guy who saw them at an outdoor gig in the early 90's, maybe BDO, and he said it was a brilliant show. I watched a couple of the videos while listening to this, all soft focus 80's and lots of stud belts/guitar straps, they were like a Pommy lads take on Van Halen. This is pretty good stuff, not my cup of rock but so what; good song writing, some very good twin guitar attack and a whole lot of fun. I loved the story on Phil Lynnott from the Lizz, he knew the Def could do what they could not, this record shows that.
Def Leppard is by no means big art. But it sure is helluva catchy and it leaves you smiling. Imagine putting on Side B for the first time and “Foolin’” is the first thing on? Good times! Pyromania is also the birthplace of the legendary Gunter Glieben Glauchen Globen. So there’s also that.
I've been watching a lot of 80s movies recently, this album definitely fits that theme.
Rockin’
This was pretty fun to listen to
Rock, rock, and more rock
Yeaahh babyyy sista albumet!
