Reviews (page 4 of 8)
Not mind blowing as far as subject matters goes, but some super fun songs on here and everything is performed very crisp and tight. A couple iconic performances on here shine through some of the more standard hair metal fare, these guys are clearly at their best when they’re ripping and having a good time doing it. A couple deeper cut tracks on here just blend together a bit too much for it to be a must listen for me.
If you like Def Leppard you’ll love this. It’s practically the blueprint for the band. Not terrible but pretty much cookie cutter hair rock. 3
So much more dynamic of an album than I expected. This could be a good working-in-the-shop album. No individual song caught me, but as a whole it's a great listen.
Def Leppard (and almost all hair metal) is stupid music for stupid people. BUT stupid people certainly have more fun and this music IS fun!
I could've sworn that I got this album already (never mind, that was Hysteria!) I guess this was when Def Leppard really started to lean into the hair metal sound that was all over the place in the 80's. Melodic hooks and vocal harmonies galore, it's hard not to have fun here (if you'll allow it). I don't think the overall body of work is as memorable as say, Hysteria from a few years later, but "Photograph" and "Rock of Ages" are both very much worth the price of admission at least.
It as good as the other one of theirs we had but still a few good moments
The production takes centre stage here and completely smothers any resemblance of a good song. This is an album that I loved back in the day but it seems very cringe now. A couple of high points save things some what.
I wasn’t exactly familiar with Def Leppard, but they reminded me a bit of KISS, so I was pleasantly surprised. And I was also surprised by the intro to ‘Rock of Ages’ and the explanation behind it 😁 Three stars…
I've never been a fan of Def Leppard. They always seemed to stand apart from their contemporaries in the NWOBHM and not just because of their focus on aiming for success in USA - I actually quite liked "Hello America" from their debut. They all seem like really nice guys and I really respect how they stood by drummer Rick Allen when he lost his arm. With the benefit of time, and hearing interviews and seeing projects in which the likes of Joe Elliott have beed involved, I can hear the influence of Mott the Hoople and Thin Lizzy but I just can't warm to their music. I love what Mutt Lange did on AC/DC's Highway to Hell and Back In Black albums but here his production is one of the major turn-offs. The guitars sound big but the drums, possibly mixed with drum machines, are drenched in reverb, the vocals, especially the backing vocals, in chorus, the whole sound layered and over-polished. "Photograph" is fairly catchy and "Rock of Ages" is memorable as possibly the best/worst of the vapid 'rock 'n' roll' lyrics. None of the other songs hang in the memory for long. Yes, it was hugely successful in their target market but the list of hugely successful rock/metal bands in the US wouldn't suggest a particularly discerning audience. Glossy pop-metal, good for a gym listen once in a while, but no more than that.
Quite a generic sound 80s rock album to me, not bad but nothing blew my socks off.
Ok
1001 albums to hear before you turn into a Rock! Rock! 116# Yeah it's quite rocky, but I wouldn't know if they didn't mention it.. like 312 times. Other than that... it's rocking Has that 80s drums and synths which if not done in a great production it sounds dated. Photograph is cool but also sounds dated as .. a rock. I was aware of Def Leppard.. like that they were a rock band and stuff.. but yeah this was more melodic choruses than what I was expecting. I want to photograph actually, cause i want to buy a digital camera just to take photographs of stuff or people, minus 10 points.
Nice hard rock sounds like AC/DC nothing new
I forgot how much I can enjoy heavy metal
Good album
Great album with several very popular classic songs. I remember listening to this when I was young and thought it was super heavy and really rocked. Listening to it now, it seems really tame and more like pop rock. It still sounds good but I have heard it many times and a local radio station that I used to listen to played the hit songs every day so it's not something I need to hear again. Nice to give the whole album a listen again though.
2.5*
Decent
Kova levy taas Def Leppardilta, se aikasemmin tällä listalla levy tais olla parempi. Kovaa menoa ja hyviä kappaleita tälläkin. Jämäkkää ja isoa stadion rokkia. Parhaat: Too Late For Love, Photograph
As part of the NWoBHM, Def Leppard's 3rd album ushers in the era of stadium rock and hair metal. Polished in the studio, metal edges bugged out, the album brought Def Leppard mainstream success near the top of the charts. Sounds good for what it is.
Genuinely absurd to me that "Photograph" is such a legendary, great song that defines its parent genre but the rest of this album comes across as awkward and off-putting. I respect this album for its importance but I always preferred Bon Jovi in terms of this stuff. 10/10 album cover though, I've always loved it since I was 13. I would've worn that on a shirt back then.
We already had Hysteria. This is redundant.
Like fine
Very typical 80s rock, a bit fun. 5/10
Like it 3/5
It's okay. Neither bad nor good
fun hardrock album with big glamrock influences, no standout songs anymore however
Decent.
Photograph is pretty great
How I feel about cheesy 80s rock totally depends on my mood. On this occasion I started off really into it, but got a bit fed up of it by the end of the album.
Cool
Does what it says on the tin. No notes.
I cant believe I got this the day after Bon Jovi... I used to listen to a lot of hair metal and Glam Metal in high school, but I have since grew out of it and can't stand most if it anymore. The singles are good (at best), but the rest of the songs are pretty bad or boring. I guess the correct adjective is dumb. Rock, Rick, Til You Drop is one of the dumbest songs I have ever heard. Same thing goes for Die Hard The Hunter. Low 3.
A curious album. The good songs I think are really good, some of which seem to be pretty underrated too which is unfortunate. There are no really bad songs, but the mid songs seem to come from a place of them trying too hard to make a rock anthem and they end up lacking the heart of the better tracks. It's still good overall, but could have used a little more care. 3.4/5
Why have I never noticed the similarity b/w Def Leppard and AC/DC vocals? High school nostalgia, but I don’t need to revisit this one too often.
It took a lot of hairspray to make this record.
Enjoyed it more than I figured I would but the entire album in a single sitting is an endurance test. 3.5
I liked it in the beginning because it was powerful, but a few songs in it started to feel like very generic rock.
Thought this was kiss for quite a lot of the album
Loud, cheesy and dumb... but still groovy and fun to listen. This kind of greasy, overproduced pop-metal has been so rehashed over the years that it's hard to imagine how radically different it felt in the early 80s. Our parents listened to Bob Dylan or Elvis, so that's what we heard at home ; for some of us, stuff like Def Leppard were a big shock, because they sounded like they were from another planet - and you could actually hear them on the radio, contrary to more extreme but less easy to find genres of music. Of course, it was just a fad, and five years later hair metal had already become a parody of a parody. But I'm still happy it existed at some point in time, allowing hard rock music to invade the mainstream psyche. It's clearly not something I'd listen to anymore (even nostalgia has limits...), but blasting this album while drinking my morning coffee was kind of a guilty pleasure. 5/10
I liked a couple of these, and the rest were kind of ”meh” or just ok. This is really 2.5 for me…normally I really have to dislike a record to give it a two, so I will settle on three stars.
Better than expected. Not my thing but some of the singles are very Transformers The Movie (which is no criticism).
It's 80 hair metal, you either love it or you don't 3*
I'll probably offend a lot of people by saying this but this kinda felt like fairly generic rock to me?
Dont need two Def Leppard albums on the list. I can appreciate it's place in history. It's just not my thing. 2.5/5. Raising to 3.
Good if in the mood for rock music
7 / 10
Starts out great but flags significantly as it goes along
I don't think this is as solid as Hysteria, but it definitely paved the way for a seriously hairy 80s. In retrospect the production is kind of annoying with the booming toms, but I'm always impressed with their harmonies and vocals. Maybe a 3.5 for me, but dropping as I gave Hysteria a 4.
тяжеловато, но запомню ли я откуда офспринг запев взяли?
I could see myself really liking it on another day but just wasn't in the mood for rock-pop today.
I wasn't aware that Def Leppard were considered part of the new wave of British heavy metal. I really thought they were an american hairmetal band. Some interesting songs, but in the mirror looks and sounds a bit cheesy.
I guess this is one of the few old metal bands that I enjoy an entire album of.
Some bangers. Another of cheese. Fun.
3 or 4 of these songs are classic rock staples. They carry a lot of the weight here. I don’t think we talk enough about how crazy is it that the drummer lost his arm like 2 years after this album came out and just continued to drum for the next 40 years
My rating 3.4. So much nostalgia wrapped up in this album that when it came up I was excited. Then I listened to it. Doesn’t hold up. The hits are the hits but most of it is pretty mediocre.
Classic glam rock that actually rocks. Not as strong as hysteria, but it has the hits. Steady drums and that classic whining yell followed by a gravely chorus.
Not as many standouts as Hysteria. Was slightly disappointed by this one
Good
2.5
Wow, no lo que esperaba AT ALL. Canciones guardadas on first lisen: Rock! Rock! & Photograph.
Radio friendly housewife rock from the steel city sellouts. Styx-like vocal harmonies & Joe Elliott doing his best Steve Tyler impression whilst laughing all the way to the bank. To be fair, they do the whole American pap-rock better than the locals. This is a lot more listenable than Hysteria as it still has a bit of edge, albeit blunt.
Ok
When I think of ¨cock rock,¨ this is it besides Motley Crue. Something about this cheesy, 80s, nasty sound is the perfect vehicle for mayhem and the pleasures of the flesh.
Def Leppard sound exactly the way you'd expect Def Leppard to sound. They sound like standard generic 80s power hard rock. Which I guess says something, because they helped set the sound of this style enough for it to become a stereotype. It all kind of sounds the same to me, but hey, it does what it says on the tin I guess. If this is your style, then there's probably loads to enjoy here.
Det här är inte riktigt min smak av rock. Det är inte direkt dåligt, men det träffar inte lika bra som säg black sabbath, the who eller modernare rock. Rösten och gitarren är nog det jag "ogillar" mest.
Fun illustration of glam rock rifts, but I did not find anything that remarkable outside of the guitar work.
DL went full on pop metal with this album and got really big. They lost me at that point as I preferred their earlier music. Needless to say this Mutt Lange sound inspired many other arena rock acts in years to come.
Hello senior year...such nostalgia. You kids get off my lawn
This is the first entry from Def Leppard, and undoubtedly there will be more. This album has three decent hits: “Photograph”, “Foolin’”, and “Rock of Ages”. I hear them every time the radio is tuned to classic rock. However, the remaining seven tracks are similar to each other and boring. Overall everything balances to an average rating.
I liked this one more than Hysteria, I tried to imagine myself with a blonde mullet in a backyard at a BBQ, but that only held for so long before reality set back in.
Wir müssen nur die Zeit zurück drehen...
Hair metal with all the fun and none of the sleaze. Some of the lowest rated albums i have are in this genre as they are just gross to listen to. This was silly and loud and catchy and camp and Sheffield and much better.
Strong rock, almost felt like a parody at times but still enjoyable
So far really getting a more commercial radio vibe from this album, it’s almost too safe and boring. After reading that this was a move to being more of a radio friendly sound it makes sense. Not a bad album but largely uninspiring and lot of repetitive hooks and choruses that feel like many songs should end 30 seconds before it’s over. A couple of good hits and nice guitar solos but this one is pretty average for me.
Album #22, Def Leppard, Pyromania ⭐️⭐️⭐️ We’re getting into a genre I couldn’t care less about. ’80s heavy metal isn’t my thing. I don’t know if this counts as hair metal, and I’m not that familiar with Def Leppard. But I’m leaving my bias at the door for these listens. It opens with “Rock! Rock! (Till You Drop)” and I thought, oh God, here we go. But you know what? It won me over. First and foremost, it’s loud. Properly loud. Everything is well balanced and clear in the mix. You can hear every instrument distinctly. The drums are absolutely huge. It’s full-on stadium metal. Whether you like the music or not, you have to appreciate a record that sounds this big. It’s headache-inducing at times, but it is what it is. It’s a great-sounding record. Song-wise, I don’t care for some of them. You have to take the corniness at face value and accept that it’s part of the deal. “Too Late for Love” does nothing for me. The songs about rock and roll are pretty boring too. “Photograph” is easily the best song on the album. There’s a cool effect on the melodic guitar lines, kind of a phased, reverbed sound, and I love it. Any track with that kind of melodic playing really benefits from it. “Comin’ Under Fire” is good. “Die Hard the Hunter” is too long. A couple of others are decent. I’m giving it three stars because, for what it is, I actually enjoyed it. It won me over. I wasn’t in great form today and thought this would drive me mad, but it actually cheered me up a bit. So I owe it that.
This was about what I expected. Photograph is a really good song. They’re great rockers and the somgs have a certain heft that other rock bands don’t.
I enjoyed the first few songs here particularly Stagefright - this had some energy to it that for me was lacking in the rest of the album. I can take or leave a lot of glam metal but it can be done well. I'll certainly give this album a 3 as it's a very good glam album, just got a bit samey after a while. I will say Die Hard The Hunter was more enjoyable.
Extremely limited experience of Def Leppard before this, basically restricted to only their biggest hits. This album starts very fun, if a little poppy for Rock, with "Rock Rock till you drop", though I believe this was just the direction rock took during the 80s and, despite my grumbling, it did give the genre it's staying power for the majority of the decade. On second listen, I did really enjoy the romantic vibe of "Photograph", with the air grabbing choruses and guitar riffs that lead to air guitaring among friends, it's another really fun track. "Too late for love" had an incredibly catchy chorus and fantastic guitar chords; one of those tracks that made me feel good when listening to it. As the album creeps on, I notice (at least for me) that every track exists purely for fun and, emotionally, doesn't really offer anything else. Although I am enjoying every track, each one doesn't appear to have anything to say. I don't think I care... "Rock of Ages" is still great fun; Not everything has to say something. Too many times I think people don't understand that something can exist purely for fun and little else. ******************************************************************************* This album has, for one reason or another, reminded me again of my limited musical dialogue. This is now my 51st album and I still couldn't tell you what a harmony, an extension or what bright or transparent music is. I promised myself I'd fix this so that I had a more err... "Sonic" appreciation for the music as the journey unfolds. PPS - I notice this is another album with reviews that are, quite frankly, disgustingly hateful. If you're going to hate it, at least be constructive as to why it's as bad as you say it is. There are some real fucking arseholes on this website.
So many rock and roll songs about rock and roll. Fun album, some cool riffs. 2.6
I was ready to give this a higher score just based on the hits I know. However the rest of the songs just feel like filler and kind of lazy. They found a formula and were too afraid to stray.
Hell yeah brother
Nothing groundbreaking but nothing offensive either, sounds a lot like Metallica, not sure which came first 3
Another OK album for when you want to play something loud and not really think about it.
I am biased, but '83 was a great year. Solid album, definitely something I'd come back to listen to again.
I get it but it’s not for me:/
Energetic over the top poppy hard rock. Good album all around, high energy fun and sexy. Worth a listen but it’s not an all time great (Spotify made that clear by having me listen to Van Halen and Deep Purple immediately after).
Sympa, un peu répétitif, je confondrais facilement avec ACDC
Of course it's cheesy, dumb pop metal. What exactly was everyone expecting from an 80s hair metal band? It's decent music and fun. Photograph rises above decent. 3.5
𝘗𝘺𝘳𝘰𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘢 is solid, radio-ready British heavy metal, polished by Mutt Lange into something big, bright, and built for arenas. The riffs hit hard enough, the hooks are undeniable, and the production makes everything feel larger than life. Still, it leans so heavily into its glossy sound that it never quite grabs me the way other early-80s metal does. A strong record, but not essential for me.
A little cheesy, some talent, definitely not the worst on this list. A+ album artwork.
cheesy
2.5
Serviceable poppy hard rock. Not bad but lack some real hits to be something more than just decent.
While “Photograph” is glam rock perfection, the rest of the album leaves a bit to be desired. The songwriting doesn’t feel inspired and the unremarkable instrumentation can’t compensate for it.
Album No. 0128 on my list. Let’s just say I hoped for something a little better and expected something much worse. The only song I had previously known from “Pyromania” by Def Leppard was “Photograph”, because it’s the album’s most well known song (and appears on GTA V’s Los Santos Rock Radio). I don’t particularly enjoy this type of overtly over the top masculine hair metal style music, but I concede that the song is incredibly catchy. I expected the whole album to be like this, which it indeed was. But beyond those stylistic factors, I was afraid the songs themselves would be bad as well. But they were actually not. I mean, they’re not as good as “Photograph”, but most of them were still pretty okay. Mostly just straightforward, overtly over the top masculine hair metal. But not necessarily in a bad way. I’ll add “Photograph” (of course), “Too Late For Love”, and “Rock of Ages To My Playlist”. 3/5 stars.
3.0 - Ok
The hawk the bone the eagle the bandit the fox make sure I hear this three times an hour
It's the bowling alley sound track. Hysteria is the better album
I’m conflicted bc this sounds cheesy and silly but is that not like most of classic rock?? Idk it’s fine overall
It brought back some memories; I didn't listen to this kind of music back then! It's fun to listen to after all these years, and some songs really get us going, lots of energy... but my tastes have evolved and the metal I listen to now is something more mature and heavy! But it was fun, so a solid 3/5
Quality classic rock, but rather repetitive
Pretty good arena rock from the 80s, if it does get a little tiring towards the end of the record. Highlights: "Photograph"
Lo he escuchado a pedazos pero la neta esta interesante
Not my kind of music, but thought it was overall good.
5.0/10 May have liked this as a teenager... not so much now.
I liked this more than I expected to!
I understand the appeal of this band and album, and to 12 year-old Jeff it was understandably pretty cool. It didn’t quite do it for me, but Rock of Ages is a power pop banger, so that rounds up a 2.5 to a 3. A decent surround sound mix on Apple Music helped as well.
Good old fashioned rock. Tight.
Light 3,5
Smells like hairspray. I'm pretty sure this album had a measurable impact on the hole in the ozone layer. I can't fault the job it does at being what it is. But it's very dated at this point. I'm sure this will bring back a lot of memories for a lot of people. But if you weren't the right age when this came out... it's just fine.
Hum, better than Metallica, but still not really my thing.
Gunter gleiben glauchen globen. And suddenly I'm a little kid skating around a rink.
This is fine to be on nothing caught my ear but it wasn’t like I needed to turn it off - between 2 and 3 - thought it would be less poppy
Standouts Photograph Too Late For Love Foolin' Rock of Ages
When people say 80's music their heads usually go to synthpop and new wave but often forget that the Rock sound found here was also ubiquitous. The hits are the hits and have been in the zeitgeist since their release. And no, I am not going to deny that "Photograph" is a fun song. The non-Singles all have that same generic 80's Rock sound, which turns out should just be called the "Mutt" Lange sound. A lot of it sounded like AC/DC to me. Mostly I can do without that slick 80s rock production. I wasn't much a fan back then and not much has changed in the ensuing years. I did find that "Stagefright" wasn't too bad though. I'm not going to ever come back to Def Leppard but I can understand the appeal.
Actually enjoyed a fair amount
It's OK, but not really for me. There were a lot more exciting things going on in music in 1983: post-punk, new wave, indie and metal - this isn't anything, what even is it? Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ ★★★☆☆ (5/10) Total reviewed : 178 Already owned : 40 Purchased : 6 To buy : 5 Nope : 127
Alright rock. Nothing bad to say about it, but not my thing so doesn't stand out too much
I mean, they did what they set out to do and they did it well. This style of young, dumb and full of… fun…rock just isn’t for me
Satisfying, their sound is always fun and the less-significant songs still provide that treat. Not quite at a 4 but close to it
6/10
Couple good songs, but got old fast.
Þetta er ekki minn tebolli. Photograph er fínt lag og þetta er voða polished þannig séð. Startaði þessu glam metal dæmi sem ég elska ekki beint. En finnst smá asnalegt að henda í tvist bara útaf því.
Good album, some nice songs there, i did NOT enjoy listening it from my computer tho, only from my mini speaker but a bit too hard rock for me so a 3.
Klassisk 80'er-rock. Den var ganske udmærket at lytte til.
I think “Photograph” is a great song. The rest of the album is just ok.
Another good rock album! Photograph has always been a favorite
Quality hair metal.
Wow I am really surprised by this one! I'm normally very hesitant with glam metal, but this was just dramatic 80s fun! Very enjoyable, especially if you don't take it too seriously.
I was already prepared to not like this, such was my hatred of ‘80s pop and hair metal. Then the singer chimes in sounding just like the guy from AC/DC on the very AC/DCesque first track, “Rock! Rock! (Till You Drop)” and the dread deepens. Luckily that was the nadir. I will acknowledge that “Photograph” is a good song (it’s the cowbell), ditto “Foolin’” (again, cowbell), and the riff supporting “Too Late For Love” is pretty tasty. Elsewhere there are songs with good elements weighed down by terrible period production (the drums, especially) and cheesy, cliched lyrics. I recall hearing these songs at the roller rink, blaring out of bitchin’ Camaros, or airing on MTV (the number of videos this album spawned is impressive), but I am likewise old enough to know that their musical quality took a pretty steep dive from here. These days I might select one of these songs on the barroom jukebox when I’m feeling nostalgic, but that’s it.
Okay, I really, really wanna roast this record for being radio friendly lite AC/DC pablum but 1) it was everywhere in junior high and I have to respect the market share and how it was the soundtrack to my pre teen years 2) def leppard covered Jobriath's Heartbeat and a bunch of glam rock songs on their covers record "Yeah!"and the lead singer was in the Jobriath AD documentary praising his work. It's part of my Repo Code that I can't dis another Jobriath fan, so pyromania gets a 3, even if Thomas Dolby used a pseudonym rather than be associated with working on it.
Cool!
TRES Y MEDIO A ESTOS ROCKEROS COMERCIALES
I think 99% of the time you can tell that if an album has a song with ‘rock’ or in the title it’s going to be very meh (only exception is bowie) 3/5
Rocking
Watered-down hard rock. 6 or 7 out of 10, so definitely 3 stars. But I'll grant that the album might should be on a list of albums to listen to. It was very influential in bringing the genre to mainstream radio. (Not that being on the radio means the music is good. "It's All about that Bass" was a big hit, but it's not good.)
Early 80s, actually kinda rocked
I just don’t like this genre honestly
Not my style
More like “meh”tal. Am I right?!
A trend in these hair/glam metal albums, are about 3-4 good hits that made the radio that you recognize. Any other song on the album is not nearly as good or listenable, and drags it down.
I don’t want to lie and say i did not enjoy this. This genre is fun sometimes, but Glam Metal is just a weird genre to me. I had fun, so I’d give it a 4, but the machine drums, my god… I’ll definitely scratch off a point for not using real drums :(
Not my kinda stuff
I get why people love their big hair, big guitar rock. I'm just not one of those people.
I’m plenty familiar with Def Leppard’s stuff, and while I can respect what they did for rock in the 80s, hair metal in general just doesn’t do it for me. Everything’s big, glossy, and built for arenas, which is fine, but it loses some of the grit I like in rock. That said, the opening track was pretty good and kicked the album off strong. You can tell the band knew how to write hooks that stick, and the production is top-notch for its time. There’s no denying the talent, even if the overall style isn’t my thing. Pyromania is solid for what it is, but it’s not something I’d reach for often. If you’re into that big 80s sound, this is right up your alley. For me, it’s just a decent listen that reminds me why I never fully got into the genre.
Unmoved.
typischer 80er hard rock, weichgespült. allerweltstauglich.
Some good songs, like Photograph. I was surprised how much they sounded like AC/DC on a couple of songs. The vocals weren’t my favorite.
It's not bad but not my thing... Definitely a bit same-y and the last song is... not needed?
2.5
Guilty pleasure
I’ve given Def Leppard a lot of grief over the years. Much of it was deserved. But when you shut off the old brain and just listen, Pyromania ain’t half bad.
Brits do Poodle Metal better shock (Hysteria is better, btw)
Solid rock album, highlights were the singles. Good preview of what they would become with the next album.
I liked this one! Some jams on here and some prior earworms that I never realized were indeed Def Leppard
Definitely quintessential hair rock and kind of what I imagine the genre to be. Photograph is a classic and stage fright really shreds. Foolin’ is pretty iconic as well. Better album than I imagined, couple of hit songs on it.
"Is that AC/DC?" "...No, it's Def Leppard." Fine enough rock, but doesn't stand out from the crowd. Gets a bit better but pretty standard hair metal - which is not necessarily a bad thing.
Fine album. Nothing too special or mind-blowing. Just a solid rock album.
Pretty much exactly what I expected.
"Pyromania" is the third studio album by English rock band Def Leppard. Glam metal, hard rock and heavy metal are the Wiki-listed genres. The album was a shift from their heavy metal roots to a more radio friendly sound spearheaded by producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange who told the band to gather riffs and vocal ideas instead of completing songs. It was the first album to feature guitarist Phil Collen who replaced Pete Willis during the recording as Willis was kicked out the band for alcoholism. Other bandmembers included Joe Elliott (lead vocals), Steve Clark (guitars, backing vocals), Rick Savage (bass, backing vocals) and Rick Allen (drums, backing vocals). The album had mostly positive reviews and was a massive commercial success reaching #2 in the US and #18 in the UK. Guitar strikes and a whirling synth open "Rock! Rock! (Til You Drop)." The band kicks in with Elliott on vocals. This sounds a lot like AC/DC. They get their trademark anthemic loud backing vocals going. Loads of production. The standard two guitar solos. Extremely pointless lyrics. The crunchy guitar riff starts "Photograph." Drums and, yes, a cowbell. Catchy backing vocals and guitar. Oh, and more overtop production but this song has held up pretty well. "Too Late for Love" has swirling wind noises, a darker guitar melody and Elliott goes an octave down with with his voice. Chanting backing vocals and Elliott's statement and plea. An atmospheric synth and a heavy metal ballad guitar are intros for "Foolin'." More of the chunky guitar riffs and anthemic backing vocals. This is another song that has held rather well and maybe it due to Elliott's vocals and lyrics of paranoia and torment from a girl. Oh, they bring out all the stops in "Rock of Ages": a nonsensical German phrase, a cowbell and Elliott rapping of sorts. That's all before it kicks in to a standard rock song. I do like the evil laughter at the end. My 14-year old self played the heck out of this cassette when it came out. Well, what does my 57-year old self think now? Two songs have held up rather well..."Photograph" and Foolin'." The rest?.....Ah, sounded pretty dated. This album is very highly produced and very formulaic. Anthemic backing vocals, two guitar solos per song, guitar melodies, some sort of synth intro, an underlying rhythm guitar and lyrics geared towards, yes, 14-year old boys. But, the songs, choruses and riffs are very catchy and the production is detailed. AC/DC and even Kiss influences heard throughout. Having heard "Hysteria" fairly recently, I'd say that's held up better. But, there are a few songs that still sound good and, maybe, this album brings up good memories worth going back for.
I'm honestly shocked I liked it as much as I did because I normally hate hard rock but I guess that's why i'm doing this!
A few good hits, hair rock.
Def Leppard has just never been my style of metal.
Fav song: Rock of Ages This is dumb fun. You either like it or you don't. Nothing here is to be thunk too hard on.
It is typical Def leopard, some of their classics on here. A lot of it does sound the same though.
There was something pleasant about it
hair metal goes pop
Not exactly subtle but I quite enjoyed it 😅💪
Pretty good but don't love it
I only recently listened to my first Def Leppard album Hysteria and I loved it. Didn’t like this one as much but still an ok album.
I enjoyed this more than I thought I would! Not a favorite but it was a fun listen.
again just a solid album that i don’t really love nor hate. it’s just not my kind of genre in general, but i def see the appeal in the sound. it’s fun, easy to listen to and slaps enough. when “too late for love” came on i actually liked it a lot. at least sonically it slapped. the following song also kind of slaps i guess. “foolin’” was nice. there’s been some nice guitar riffs here and there throughout the album. 3/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Effing 80s Rock n Roll, man. \m/\m/
This album has Photograph on it. Thats a perfect song.
Excellent pop rock album. Pop rock for it's time, at least. Definitely AC/DC wannabe, as far as vocal style and simple chords, but way more ballads than AC/DC has ever and will ever write.
Hair
It's alright, never been too keen on 80s hair-metal
Expectations very low only being familiar with Def Leppard radio tunes. Turns out the deeper cuts are wayyy better.
jako cheesy 80te acdc typa shit. goofy i dobro za slusati u pozadini
Def Leppard is one of those bands that, if I’d been around during their heyday, I probably would’ve been a fan. They blend right in with the hair-metal scene of the ’80s, with big hooks, big hair, and even bigger choruses. I don’t usually seek out their music, but I’ll be damned if they aren’t one of the best at the time doing it. Pyromania is pure, polished rock spectacle, the sound of a band made for stadiums.
I loved this as a 13 year old, and listening to the tracks takes me right back to those long-distant days. There are some great tunes - namely ‘Photograph’ and ‘Rock of Ages’ - but ultimately an album’s quality has to outstrip its nostalgia value, and this one - while a fun listen - hasn’t. Good.
Loved it in the 80s, but not into it now.
This is my favorite Def Leppard album. Just straight up pop/glam metal. Good tunes, including a lot of bangers. You can't tell me that Photograph is a lame ass song, you just can't. Nothing amazing, but fun to listen to. 3.1 / 5 stars
Another album of ball screaming. Another album where I clocked out half way through. 5/10
Billy's got a gun
Pretty Exciting Stuff. Love the cover, and wouldn't mind hearing more of them
I am not a big arena rock fan so I was worried being asked to Rock! rock! (Til you drop) on the opening tracking. In fact, I skipped that last 1min of this song. However, the rest of the album explored more complex themes and was solid 80s rock album. Standout track is Foolin’
3.5 stars
Far more enjoyable than I expected. Photograph was the clear standout to me on this, but there was still a lot to like on the other songs. This type of music isn't exactly my cup of tea, but I think it's a worthy entry from the world of butt rock.
Though it's pretty shallow lyrically and, in retrospect, doesn't bring any surprises musically, it is a decent album and overall a fun listen. In 1983, it played a role in bringing hair metal to the mainstream by merging metal and pop sensibilities. So, while some aspects feel dated and out of style, it does capture the sound of an era that's fun to visit on occasion.
This was fine. Several good songs on here. Hysteria is better, though.
This album is alright, kickstarted the hugeness of hair metal and all but most of these songs just pass me by. But holy hell does Def Leppard know how to make a single, each of them are just insanely good and super catchy. Also this is one of my mom's favorite bands (though she prefers their earlier work)
Good 80s record, very anthemic. F-F-F-Foolin! is my favorite. Liked the last song especially the final minute/hidden track!
Pretty standard 80s rock with a couple of better than average songs.
This was better than I expected
3.4
First time listening to a Def Leopard album. I appreciate the songwriting and enjoyed the melodies in the choruses.
a nice classic hard rock album. not very interesting and not too boring
• Quality hair metal (or is that an oxymoron)
Some classic songs.
i don't like def leppard or whatever genre this is but this is tolerable
Enjoyed it gave me tenacious d vibes 😂
It’s not bad. Not great, either. It’s pretty fun, though.
An 80’s classic doesn’t mean it holds the test of time. It’s ok. Hair metal is such a strange thing.
Not my jam but some bangers on here, namely Photograph. Funny how this music sounds like a precursor to modern rock bands like Staind and Shinedown.
Classic 80s hard rock album! Cant go wrong with it but it wont leave you with any massive impact. I probably don’t understand the impact this had in the 80s since im too young. Solid album. Favorites: Too Late For Love, Photograph
Photograph Foolin' Rock of Ages
A good listen. Really liked Photograph. More AC/DC than I thought.
Good listen
Eh, it was pretty much fine. Seemed like Gym Rock
Fun but I won't be going back to it
soso
This is supremely cheesy '80s metal-lite, but it's very good at being supremely cheesy '80s metal-lite. Beneath all the "let's rock!" goofiness, there are some great melodic parts, and "Photograph" is still awesome.
Thoughts before listening: 80s pop metal album that was huge. I know the hits will be fun to listen to, but I am not expecting much from this. Review: So this isn't bad, its fun 80s hard rock and reminds me of what I knew of rock music at my earliest age, being all over radio, MTV, and just played in general life. That being said, I developed a strong dislike of this brand of poppy hard rock as I got older and developed my own tastes. Alternative and punk rock were essentially the antithesis of this overly polished sound, and I gravitated to that music through high school and college. So, I can clearly say that while this is solid, iconic music, its just not really my thing. 3-stars
Not as good as I was hoping. Ok though.
I was ready to give it 1 star and move on, but after the first song it's just...not terrible or anything. there's certainly a vibe to it. a sweaty, stinky, uncomfortable vibe that takes me back to like high school football games. it smells bad but it also smells American teenager rebellion so you know it smells our kind of bad. I know they're from the UK so don't @ me.
Some impressive riffs on here, especially in the second half, and I respect its sheer volume for a record this radio friendly but I don't care for the songwriting and vocals all that much. I prefer my hair metal less melodic and with just a little more grit, which is a bit counterintuitive to the very concept - can see the appeal nonetheless.
This feels polished within an inch of its life, but it was fun to listen to. The electronic drums sound super dated in 2025. Loved the classic 80s guitar sound and shiny harmonies.
It’s fine.
Nice hard rock album of the 80s, precursor to the hair metal phase that would take over the airways soon 3/5
In the attempt to make heavy metal radio friendly, they’ve produced an album that’s pretty bland. Not pop not metal but something in between that feels dated and sad. Not horrible though, it’s actually pleasant background music.
This album is almost exactly as old as me and it shows lol. It's so cheesy and bad, but I'll round up because Photograph is a quintessential 80s banger, and there are a few sick hooks and choruses hiding underneath all the cheese. 2.5
Nice album, really liked Photograph.
I mean, I get it. It's hair metal. And this is a fine version of hair metal, but I wouldn't say it was "good". It's a fine album.
все таки поп я люблю больше…
Spinal Tap vibes, for sure. Feels very dated. I don't dislike it but I'd rank it near the bottom of all the metal albums that have come up here.
Yeah, it's shallow and cheesy, but if I'd had a skinful in the Solid and walked into the Cathouse while they were playing something off this I'd be well into it. Five star party music, but I'm listening on my way to work so it gets three. Tough break, DL, bad timing
Technisch goed, maar nummers boeien uiteindelijk niet genoeg. Teveel tussen AD/DC en Van Halen in.
Fun album
It's just so stupid you have to love it. Mid tempo hard rock with solid riffs, precise leads, loads of hooks, and some insanely expensive sounding production. It's before my time so never really internalized this stuff, but can really see how it would become a ubiquitous deeply imprinted part of dumb guy culture.
I first heard this album when I was 12. It is so tied up in memories of my first 6th grade dance where not only did Michelle Zabka go, but she danced with me, and then I slept over my friend Cory’s house and we listened to “Foolin” about a million times. So, to make a long story short, can’t be terribly objective, here. But “Photograph” still rocks solid
Better than hysteria. It was pretty good and I don't really like this band.
Photograph has a good tune, particularly in the chorus. The rest all sound the same for the most part, but good solo closing out Die Hard The Hunter. Comin' Under Fire is sexy. Cool start and end to Billy's Got A Gun.
80’s hair rock
Classic glam rock
I had definitely never heard this whole album. I knew all the hits, but there was some good stuff on here. It did all sort of sound the same toward the end, but I enjoyed it.
As entertaining as this album can be, there's only so much I can get out of this kind of music - at its core it is empty which is okay. That said, this album is about as much as I can ever see myself enjoying this genre.
I don't hate Def Leppard but I don't love them either. "Rock of Ages" is a good song, though.
Great 80’s hair rock
Some great classic rock anthems here. If you went in expecting anything else... idk what to tell you... Some of it got too samey but still a fun ride.
Ee må godt være der, men det for lidt i halvt tempo... Første halvdel kunne ligeså godt have været AC/DC eller Guns'n Roses Light.
7/10
6.5/10
It's not terrible, but it could have been a lot better with a better singer than this 3rd rate Robert Plant. Some songs are alright, some are cheesy. Favorite song: stagefright
Fun album - great hooks, great melodies. And Photograph is a fantastic song. Glad this is on the list.
That was a fun flashback
Heard this album a lot on MTV when I was a kid.
Heavy Metal 80’s hair band…..album is ok…reminds me too much of junior high school, I hated junior high school!
I’m not a lover of the type of rock music Def Leppard put out. I always feel that it is MOR rock designed and polished specifically for FM American radio stations (maybe they are DAB now?) I did purchase their orchestrated greatest hits album last year as I felt I need a Def Leppard in my collection but this will be as far as I go into their discography. This album is OK every now and then but the formula for each song is the same so nothing here to challenge or learn something new. 3/5 8/5/25
It wasn’t awful but the fact that Pour Some Sugar on Me wasn’t on here suggests that we have more Def Leppard coming and I’m not sure we need that.
Fairly standard hair metal, not a bad listen.
Classic 80s. Other than the hits, this was pretty basic.
After yesterday's Metallica - which I did not like - I thought, oh no, here we got again. But to my surprise, I liked this. Not what I expected, and that's a good thing. Listened to it all the way through. Not saying it's going in my regular rotation ...
Classic example of big hair rock. Saw then play a couple of years ago and loved it
This is glorious 80's hair band rock and roll. Catchy and fun while not afraid to belt out some over the top exhortations to the brighter side of sex, drugs, and glam rock. It is hard to navigate between nostalgia and concrete critique, so I'll just say, give it a listen. It is a fun and wild ride you won't regret, but probably won't revisit very often.
Hooky, overproduced album brought back a lot of memories. More like a greatest hits album with some great bangers "Fooling," "Rock of Ages," "Photograph." Some duds as well.
While the 80's hair metal scene has lost it's power, Def Leppard are still legends. I would give up my left arm to see them in concert, just to check off that box. However, while this album has a couple classics, the rest of the album can't hold up on it's own. ~ 3 stars
It's classic Def Leppard. I didn't hear anything surprising from this album. I mean, I guess it's pretty great for what it is - polished pop/jock rock? I dunno. You know those bars that are really popular with a younger crowd, and visually they're really slick looking places, but when you go there you're just like, "why is everything sticky, and what is that smell?" Yeah, this album is the aural version of that bar.
3.5 - Cool Vibes!
Ok
This album was everywhere when it came out. Hits were best listened to in the Strip Clubs of the times. In the light of day not so much.
3.1 2x
Like the best parts of the hot rod soundtrack
Solid classic rock
Painfully 80's. Aside from the single 'Photograph' eminently forgettable.
Pretty fine... I think they call it dad rock. I'm a lot older and less drunk than the TA but still enjoyed it a quite a bit
Being honest, was a meh album but a couple of songs
Sheffield’s finest rock hair metal band 🤘
If you like mediocre hair metal then this is your thing. 7.0/10
liked it, not alot but yeah
Definitely a quintessential Hair metal album. Heavy 80's rock with withstanding hits. Nice to hear the other songs on this album.
it's good to know my perception of Def Leppard was 100% accurate
Sounds like underaged drinking in all its glory. It’s just sappy pop songs with guitar dive bombs.
rock rock til you drop- 4 photograph- 4 or 5 stagefright- 4 too late for love- 3 die hunt the hunter- 3 foolin- 3 or 4 rock of ages- 4 coming under fire- ay yo. 4 action not words- 3 or 4 billys got a gun- 3 or 4 i think i wouldve been fine if i didnt hear this before i died
Cheesy as expected, but honestly pretty fun.
I imagine this was annoying / grating when it first came out but I can appreciate it now
Billy’s Got a Gun
Historically, was never a big fan of Def Leppard. Actually enjoyed this album more than I thought I would! Solid 3.
Surprisingly a pretty good time.
I don't know what to do with this. I kind of like it in a vacuum, and singles like Photograph are permanently etched in my brain. But I listened in the purest environment possible, a 4 hour road trip, and it didn't capture me, I turned it off with a few songs left. I actually skipped out of Foolin' - great chorus but the rest of the song sucked. I wanted to like this more than I did because Hysteria is permanently etched into my 11 year old brain. I finished the album this morning and it was better as background music, but that's faint praise. Can I rate this the shrug emoji? As an aside, when the first track started playing, I genuinely thought it was AC/DC, a thought which kind of makes me want to kick my own ass
It’s fine, 80s rock. Pretty much what I expected.
Olvidable, pero estuvo bien. Sin más.
Not as good as Hysteria
Photograph, F-f-f-foolin', Rock of Ages and some other great songs that elementary school me got in trouble for blasting.
I feel like this record has a lot to answer for in how influential it sounds like it must have been on 80s hair metal. I didn't want to like it but "Photograph" is pretty good. Not as good as Ringo Starr's song by the same name but still respectable and I love it that in both the singer is essentially making the same complaint. Is their name a tribute to Led Zeppelin? p.s. If this record were made after 9/11 I doubt they would have gone with this cover art.
Ah, the definitive Def Leppard album at long last. (Still a mystery why this collection also has "Hysteria".) It sounds *exactly* like I (vaguely) remember from the rockin' 80s, no better and no worse. I was kind of hoping that the videos (which I never saw back in the day, thanks to a cable/MTV-less upbringing) would add to the effect/quality of the songs, but sadly they too are exactly what I kind of expected, although the video for "Photograph" is actually quite disappointingly boring and uncreative, and while it's fun to see their drummer with both arms, I do wish he wasn't such a big fan of the Union Jack short-shorts. I'll admit that the only highlights on this album are their impressively numerous singles; the rest is *very* forgettable, making for a fairly uneven album. If I had enjoyed Def Leppard more as a teenager, this would easily be 4 or 5 stars for nostalgia alone. But there was always something kind of...generic...about them that made me trend towards the somewhat harder-edged bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, even the Scorpions (none of whom were all that much more interesting musically, admittedly). I was also struck by how much Joe Elliott occasionally sounds a *lot* like AC/DC's Brian Johnson, albeit Elliott's growls aren't nearly as impressive as Johnson's.
I am not a big fan of Def Leppard, but there is no denying that this record has some of their most iconic songs. There are a few filler songs here. It brings back some memories.
This collection didn’t contain any of my favoured Def Leppard songs. Quite mediocre.
Another powerful album that gets you going but it's just not exciting for more listenings.
This is a fun record, and while "Photograph" got most of the attention, there are several other great tunes on here. That said, it's not revolutionary...
I have a fondness for metal but this isn’t quite a 4 for me—not sure why but it was more in the enjoyable than the listen again category.
85% of the rating is nostalgia. Never cared for Def Leppard, still don’t, but it reminds me of some friends I had in high school who liked them a lot. All in all, not the worst album. Not the best either.
I don't know if I've ever actually listened to Def Leppard before, but it sounded almost exactly the way I would have expected it to, but maybe a little bit less heavy.
Fun stuff. 3.4.
I didn't really enjoy this album, because I don't enjoy the genre, but I can understand and appreciate why it was on the list. Personal enjoyment: 3/5 Relevance to this list: 5/5
