This is an album that really lives up to its title. Air's brand of electronic music is very spacey and ambient, pulling from lounge music for an elegant and laid back sound. It sounds like something that you'd listen to on a space cruise. For something so laid back, though, it's also shockingly adventurous with both its arrangements and sonic choices. The opening track, La femme d'argent, goes through so many subtle changes across its runtime without pulling you out of the chill vibe. While the majority of this album is instrumental, and those instrumentals are very compelling, some of my personal favorite tracks are the ones where they bring in vocalist Beth Hirsch, whose vocals lend a certain antique quality to this very future-facing record.
This album is very stylish and smooth to listen to, I have listened to some of these songs to relax me before. And it had that effect again, it’s a calming listen.
An album that I am conflicted about as it starts brilliantly with a few corking songs and hooks but by the end it is unbelievably boring and I just want to skip songs (wondering what could have interested them in recording or releasing such lame lounge electronics that goes nowhere and says nothing).
This Album came to me while I was high in room and even back then it just took me with it. The groovy and crisp bass lines and the synth that overlay everything with a certain feeling which I can't explain. But it's great to listen to, when you're on a train and just in your thoughts. It's not an album I could do a sit and listen, but it's great for just sitting somewhere and day dreaming
Well, fuck me sideways. Do I like French electronica??? First the album from Les Rythmes Digitales and now this (and I know Air is French because they helpfully put "FRENCH BAND" on the album cover). 800 albums in and this list still finds ways to surprise me. I had no idea the French were so much better at the beeps and boops than Americans. 3.8
First Listen; 3; For two albums in a row, I got electronic albums from French artists. Go figure. This album starts off strong, with tracks based around nosier synths and more driving rhythms, but it slows down on the back half and gets a little boring. Overall, the synths and effects set a fun mood, but it does get repetitive. Favorite Track: Sexy Boy

Today, from something that was exactly what I expected to something that, at least once before, defied my expectation. Air's “Virgin Suicides” was one of the bigger surprises so far for me, especially for a band that I thought I knew what to expect. I am hoping they surprise me again. To be fair, this is a lot more similar to the French Electro that I'd expect from an electronic band from France. I am surprised I am as receptive to it as I am. It probably helps that the daft punk robot vocals don't come in to ruin things until “Remember”. It probably also helps that “Talisman” came through with some nice bass prior. Where Air succeeds is when they feel like composers and not cyborgs, and they are usually decent at that. Even “New Star in the Sky” tempers the robo voice enough to feel just organic enough. That's the thing that so often sucks with stuff like that… it's being made by idiots who want everything to sound like it was made by the matrix. Air seems to dabble with that fetishization of terrible electrodes. But they do not tumble headlong in. This isn't the Virgin Suicides. But it's worth a ⭐️⭐️⭐️ ½ and a relisten.

I think this entire album has been on a soundtrack for a few dozen films. Seriously this all sounds like slow motion/montage music from films made in the 00's. I guess it's good? It's not music I will ever listen to again.
No complaints was some nice listening and I will admit electronic music needs more than one listen to get a good impression, but middling for me overall.

This was the perfect album for an afternoon of shaping croissants (and not just because it's French). Kept me calm and collected as I applied the egg wash and watched the croissants come out of the oven looking mangled as hell
I first learned about Air through this project and I’m loving them. Some quick research refers to them as “downtempo” style. Perhaps this subgenre is the key to unlock my enjoyment of electronica.
Second time this one has come around. original review was "Very Cool" in August of '25. I rated it 4 stars. Today I give it 3.5. I will round up, but it hit differently this time. "Ce Matin Là" remains my favorite track.

Dark Side of the Moon for people who aren't depressed. Pretty solid album, although I like the darker vibes of Virgin Suicides. A tad dated, especially with the 70s funk stuff going on a bit. The final two songs are easily the best (and shocker, they're the ones that are giving the most DSotM vibes).

It's very chill. The first 2 songs are the best and then the album steadily gets less interesting with each passing track. Kind of like the sort of chill, spacy, background music that people in the 60s thought we'd be listening to by the end of the millenium. Ce matin-là is lovely.

Owned this for years but not heard it for a long time. That was great! Totally forgotten what a great album that is. I remembered that Sexy Boy is a fantastic song but the rest was a very pleasant suprise. Not a weak song anywhere on the album and lots of highlights. A really nice sound, good instrumentals and lovely vocals. Favourite tracks. Sexy Boy and Kelly watches the Stars.
I liked this one better than the Virgin Suicides soundtrack. I appreciate thar (unlike that other album) there are vocals. Hints of Kraftwerk which is always a plus. I'm feeling a bit generous (and I want to make sure I revisit this another day) so I'll give it a 4.
Felt really pleaseasant and "daft punky" , with that touch of European instrumentalization
#3 Feels like I'm in the best elevator in the world. The french were absolutely cooking in music in the 90s and 2000s. Daft Punk is obviously the most notable from this musical scene but today I learned there's more. Air is also supposed to be quite popular so I guess I'm not that deep in the rabbit hole to which I might not return to besides when it's time to listen to some Daft Punk.

A solid album, but I think I'll need to give it more listens in order to fully appreciate it.
Started out thinking this was not offensive, but was also not going to be of particular note. Then we got to Talisman, and I thought "Wow, that song is actually good." So I listened to the whole album again and realize much of it is good. And I listened to it a third time and realized that this is actually a good album. It has the disadvantage of a sound that seems to whisper "don't take me seriously." But I think that after a few listens, you will see that this is a fake out - perhaps to ensure that only the faithful can partake?

Some chill music to have on in the background but it isn’t really my thing and I probably wouldn’t listen again. Think they were able to create a good atmosphere in their songs but then a lot of them went on too long and were too repetitive for me. Fav song: La femme d’argent Least fav: Remember
My only reference for air is that I have got multiple pub quiz questions wrong about French musical duos with them as the answer. Love this cover but the actual album is just ok. This came at the perfect time. I bought this for my partner on vinyl a few years ago as she remembered it fondly from her dad playing it in childhood - couldn’t be more different to what my parents were playing in childhood! But I ended up enjoying it then, and I definitely enjoyed it now. A great album.

I've had the song "La femme d'argent" in my playlist for a couple of years already and heard "Sexy boy" years ago, but it's the first time I'm listening to the whole album. I like "space" music, the likes of Didier Marouani and Jean-Michel Jarre, so I'm pretty familiar with the sound palette. I don't enjoy all tracks equally, as I'm not a big fan of vocoder. For example "Remember" has some interesting sounds but the vocals ruin it for me, and the Beth Hirsh songs don't really do it for me either. Too much pop, not enough "space". I like "La femme d'argent", "Talisman", "Ce matin-là", the rest not so much.

This is an album that the music geeks I know gush about. The kind of record where someone will post in the friend group discord server will post that they got a copy on vinyl and 12 people will immediately respond with some variation of "exquisite choice". This happened a couple of months ago and I didn't check this record out at the time because I was busy. Having now heard it, they were right. This album is excellent. Fantastic synth work and just immaculate chill vibes. Put this record on to be transported to a chic 22nd century cocktail bar, where the conversation has equal chance of being intellectual and salacious.

For a debut album, it’s pretty well done. They’re able to create these soundscapes that are very inviting and small-scale but also have these melancholy or sometimes spacey tones. The vocal tracks are pretty good, and some tracks do stick out more than others. It’s meant to be enjoyed as a purely auditory experience, so I can’t blame it for dragging at times. Overall pretty sweet, might check out more from them.
This album is so sleek—so vibey—that it almost makes me tolerate French people as a concept. While listening to it, I googled if it inspired Radiohead’s Kid A, which should tell you how much I enjoyed it. (Ironically, Air was actually inspired by OK Computer.) It turns out that this is just from a genre Kid A draws from, called “downtempo.” And it turns out that I love downtempo. Moon Safari is a ridiculously perfect album title: shiny and futuristic—exploratory and a little wild. While its influences are definitely worn on its sleeve, it doesn’t matter because the songs are fantastically composed, and generous heapings of fresh ideas are mixed in. Listening to it feels like being in a movie, which makes sense as Air went on to score a ton of movies. I would also recommend checking out the two music videos that went along with this album. The one for “Sexy Boy” is hilarious and surprisingly good social commentary, and the one for “All I Need” (haha, more Radiohead) is just really sweet. If you’re ever preparing for a job interview and want to feel more confidently professional, listen to this album. If you’re ever in a doctor’s office on acid, listen to this album. If you’re studying and need good background music, listen to this album. If you’re Ben Stiller and want good music for the Severance soundtrack, listen to this album, and tell everyone I recommended it to you because I’m awesome.

good alt trip hop album
I didn't know the band and became curious about it's roots when I found some similarities with Daft Punk. What a great vibe.
Some good songs, but overall the album is mid, 2.5
Mike Mills is best known for his independent films 20th Century Women (2016), Beginners (2011), and Thumbsucker (2005)(Lark Creative) but he has many other high quality creative projects including sleeves and promos, well worth a google. This has to be one of his most memorable and striking covers. Suits the music perfectly.
It was fine. Will I listen to it again? Probably but won’t be going back often. Very chill album

A great debut, and a chill electronic album for my list.
Well rounded, easy listening electronic-jazzy-pop. This album is a bit of an enigma but I find it quite approachable and enjoyable. Sexy Boy is kind of a red-headed stepchild here and kinda detracts from the project as a whole. Minus the aforementioned, this record is worth your time and I can see how this was an influence to a host of later acts.
Fun sounds, very ethereal. I really enjoyed some songs, others I found a bit boring.

I bought this record the day it came out because I was really into electronic music at the time (or what was then being called, electronica). At the time it was not what I was looking for. I kind of dug the chill funky retro sound but I wanted more Boards of Canada, Squarepusher, or Aphex Twin. I eventually grew to enjoy it but it’s still more of a mood album to put on while doing something else.
Sexy French chillout
Like this much much more than the Virgin Suicides Soundtrack. La Femme d'argent hitting those Deodato vibes and then Sexy Boy (which I had no idea was by Air but I knew pretty well) and then I was well on my way to just vibing the whole way through. Definitely will be listening to this again. Not quite 5 stars in my book but probably the strongest 4.49 I can muster.

Either I like this or I just really loved the year 1998.
I absolutely loved The Virgin Suicides, so I went into this expecting something here to reach out and grab me the same way. It never really happened. The music is smooth and pleasant, but most of it stayed at the level of background music. There are some nice textures and a very clean late-night lounge feel, but after a while it all started sounding a little too polished and weightless. Nothing was bad, and I understand why people love the atmosphere, but atmosphere alone wasn’t enough to carry the whole album for me. Maybe I set the bar too high because of The Virgin Suicides. This was easy enough to listen to, just nowhere near as interesting or memorable.

Jamais écouté avant. Il y a des albums dont on comprend parfaitement le projet, qui sont tout à fait à la hauteur de leurs ambitions, qui parviennent à être visiblement ce que leur créateur espéraient qu'ils soient et qui, pourtant, nous laissent parfaitement de marbre. Moon Safari est de ceux-là. Difficile de prétendre qu'il est raté, inécoutable ou à côté de la plaque et il fait bien ce qu'il essaye de faire. Mais voilà, le résultat final, plus que chill, est globalement chiant, et ne s'élève jamais au delà d'une musique d'ambiance ma foi plutôt agréable (et après tout, pourquoi pas, c'est déjà pas si mal), mais sans le moindre relief. Mention spéciale aux morceaux chantés, à la limite de la soupe indigeste. Top : La Femme d'Argent Flop : Remember

If your idea of Electronic Music is Aphex Twin or Autechre, or some Japanese Industrial Noise, then AIR will seem very easy listening. They are, of course, stylish and polished and chic. They have morer than a touch of Jean-Michel Jarre and Daft Punk about them. Their melodies - yes they have melodies, Merzbow fans - are directly appealing. The whole thing could easily sound like elevator music, but it is rather better than that. Sexy Boy and Kelly Watch the Stars are the obvious standouts, but every track is honed to a fine edge of enjoyment. Personally I think it's all a bit safe, but clearly a lot of people love it. Wweorrrth a listen at least once.

An absolute masterpiece. Listened to many times, but most recently with my brother, on CD, in Paris. Perfection.
Alright, how about a little french electronic music that’s not made by those other french electronic musicians? Going in, I did not know pretty much anything about Air(the band), and after listening to it, I was able to get a better gist of their sound. Honestly, I enjoyed it. It was interesting because it sounded like they were blending real instruments in with the electronics, which was a nice touch. I mainly enjoyed all the spacey sounding ambient tracks, such as Talisman and New Star In The Sky, my first two standouts, but the more pop oriented stuff on the album, such as Kelly Watch The Stars, another standout, were very enjoyable and did give me a Daft Punk vibe, especially in the vocals. I also enjoyed the introspection of Remember, my final standout track, for its floaty, almost melancholic vibe. Overall, I enjoyed this album. It’s not one of my top tier records, but if you need some good quality electronic music to listen to, I’d say check this one out.
beginning few songs haven't hooked me yet. first listen through I wasn't blown away, but it also wasn't what I was expecting to listen to. Now that I know what to expect, I'll give it another listen and evaluate it for what it is. I do not like this album. I tend to like the genre "jazztronica" for working, but this isn't as upbeat as I normally like and also has too many lyrics for my taste.

Very sweet vibes on this one. I hadn't thought about this album at all since the first time I heard it, but I immediately remembered how spaced-out and relaxed the experience is. Probably not going out of my way to listen again, but I certainly won't complain if it comes on.
Moon Safari is an outstanding debut that harnesses everything cool about the 1970s into a concentrated, electro-psychedelic experience. Air fuse slinky, jazzy elevator music, funky guitar riffs, vocoders, and atmospheric synths into a retrofuturistic sound that has become their calling card. The additional vocals provided by Beth Hirsch on a couple of tracks hold Moon Safari back from near perfection, mainly because they just don't fit the aesthetic provided. Otherwise, the production is tight, the tracks play out in a satisfying order, and the songs themselves waste nothing.
This was kind of lovely? New to me artist that I could get into.

As tasteful as Roger Moore wearing a safari suit (live & let die). As sexy as Roger Moore trapping Brit Eckland in a closet while making out with Maud Adams (the man with the golden gun). As playful as Roger Moore infiltrating the enemy lair via a hollowed out motorised crocodile (octopussy). As progressive as Roger Moore’s inter-racial kiss with Grace Jones (a view to a kill). A French electronic music album. Hopefully it's better than that filthy Serge Gainsbourg guy. It is better than both Gainsbourg and all of the shitty British electronic music artists that this list seems to love. Electronic music is at its best when it evokes moods, and that's what this does. It evokes a variety of moods dependent on the track, and some are even fairly good as pop songs. While talent in electronic music can be difficult to discern to the musically uninitiated, I would consider Air to be talented musicians working in this sphere. Listen up, everybody: electronic music is a genre with as much merit as rock, rap, pop, jazz, or soul. It may not always be the best listening experience, but it has multitudes of quality just like the others. This album is ranked #2 of 19 albums for 1998. I always see Moon Safari at record collector and it’s always intrigued me, but I’ve never given it a full listen until now. The production is the obvious highlight of the album with this ethereal, floaty sound throughout it all. Instrumentals usually don’t do much for me, but I really like the ones on this album. “Talisman,” “La Femme d’Argent,” and “Le Voyage de Pénélope” are all really strong instrumentals, but I think my favorite one would have to be “Ce Matin-Là.” It starts with this really cool pulsing sound that adds so much to the atmosphere of the album. Then the horns come in and it turns into this piece that, to me, is extremely reminiscent of Mario Galaxy. I love instrumentals that are full of all sorts of sounds that you can’t really describe, and this album does a great job of that. It’s one of the biggest highlights of the album. The vocal tracks here are also fantastic, with all of them having these super delicate and soft vocals that pair perfectly with the established sound of the album. I love the songs where they sing themselves, like “Sexy Boy” and “Kelly Watch the Stars,” I love the super electronic sound of their voices. The addition of Beth Hirsch, who has a much cleaner voice, is also really nice. Her two songs on the album are both fantastic and add a different feeling to the album. Overall, this album really impressed me and I’m glad I finally gave it a listen. It’s a really unique album with a sound I haven’t heard much of before. It gets 4/5 stars, excellent, and my favorite track is “Ce Matin-Là.”

One of my all-time favourite albums anyway, perfect for chilling on a Saturday afternoon when the weather is warm and you can gently glide into the sunset and the night. Best served with dry white wine and a bunch of good friends.

This is a pretty great album, but I have to be in the right mood. I started listening to it yesterday, and thought "this is nice, but I'm about done with it" and it was only song 3. I finished up tonight, after a mentally draining day at work, and it definitely lowered the blood pressure a bit. I'm probably underrating at a 4, but I have to be in such a specific mood to want to play it again.
This album is groovy, a classic electronic album of the 1990s. However, I think there's a lot better out there!

I thouroughly enjoyed this album. Each song felt vastly different from the other and as a whole seemed psychadelic and it did feel like I was on a safari on the moon, not sure how they did that. I liked la femme d’argent the most i think, which got me invested right from the jump.

I've heard from this band before, since one of its songs is in one of my favoriete movies (ten things i hate about you). But I've never really listened to it. I think it was okay. It was nice background music, but I also kinda forgot it was there. Not very memorable for me personally.
Easy listening late-90's jazzy pop without the hip vibes of The Thievery Corporation. The music here isn't bad or offensive, it's just forgettable. There's no bite to it. Meh.
This is a really solid album with a really confidently defined sound and aim, I feel. I can imagine it was rather avant-garde for its time-- its leaning away from contemporary arrangements, melodies, instruments, etc. I love the overall feelings and atmosphere it creates; it really does feel like you are on a safari on the moon! Overall, a really well-done project.

Wall-to-wall warm wonder. I skipped a night at a bar to catch these guys play live outdoors a couple years back and it was a magical evening getting to hear them play the classics off of this timeless downtempo record. Moon Safari's always been a easy 5-star for me and it's good to hear that upon re-examination for the umpteenth time it's keeping up those great, groovy vibes. The album is just luscious as hell. AIR have often been compared to Daft Punk, but I think that says more about their medium and their ethnicity than their sound. Where Daft Punk's earlier works revel in that delightfully cheesy electro sound, AIR's a much more thoughtful, meditative silky-smooth exploration. There's a delicious delight in the smoky simplicity of its tracks, where it's all distilled dusky warmth and good vibrations. And that's not to say there's not some playfulness with the instrumentation too - I hear reverb-heavy woodwinds and brassy trumpets amongst the warbling LFOs, thick basslines, rich vocoders and analogue old-school synthesizers. It has that luxurious, languorous air (ha) about it of drifting through space, with a bright sun-soaked retro-futurism that has aged excellently well. In a way it kind of resists a really direct engagement with the sound - it's teflon-like smoothness suits passive listening best, a fitting soundtrack to a quiet evening in with a tea or tequila. Unsurprisingly, then, it plays excellently on wax (as hipster as that sounds). Throw this on and let it carry you upon the waves. Pleasant aesthetic overall. It flows well, leaving the impression of a live set in a retrofuturistic lounge somewhere in a megatropolis. At the same time, it remains perpetually restrained, anonymous. It does anything but demand to be listened to; it channels a passively captivating vibe. Given that there's basically nothing here for an active listener, can it really qualify as must-hear? Hmm, well hearing and listening are two distinct actions, so I'll go with a soft yes. 4/5

Kinda sleepy. But kinda good.
Seemingly from nowhere, this became the retro, easy-listening album, none of us had previously realised we couldn’t do without. 40+ minutes of slick organic spaceage pop with barely a wasted second on anything but pure melodic exuberance. There is an overflow of intriguing sounds, both instantly familiar and relentlessly inventive. Never do they bother making sounds unless they have already written a song that deserves those magnificent vibes. These masters also have a handle on the complete history of pop music and use the knowledge to extract only the finest essences that can serve their cause. ‘Moon Safari’ is a brilliant album and today’s listen has confirmed just how much I love it.

Can't say this generated much of an option either way for me. It's OK enough, doesn't offend my ears. It's nice enough background when on. Really struggle to to have much more of an option. It represents another strand in pop music so fine It's on the list, it lapses into similar to film music of the time, but we can't have that here so this will have to do, though its not as strong composition wise. Yes, I'm another who has seen the cover not knowing what to expect. 3 star

I really like it. But strictly as like, background nothingness in order to not have to pay attention to it. When I do actively tune in, it's interesting enough, but man it does not hold my attention at all.

The only other Air albums I’ve listened to have been soundtracks, and as much as I liked those, I think this was even better. A little less background/ambient, a little more lively/expressive/with a sense of individual character. There are elements which remind me of Daft Punk (to my surprise), but it’s more restrained and maybe more refined. Really pleasant listening. 3.5-4
felt very sentimental. my last days in Granada, and I listened to this while walking to the office for the last day as an intern. With this album in the background, the city looked so pretty. Almost made me tear up.

It started off as a modern take on Space Age Jazz of the late 50s and I was really into it but then it evolved in unexpected ways to be very moody and ethereal before coming back to the Space Age Jazz. I was very surprised by how much I liked this.
This definitely want as bad some other electronic music I've heard. This is much more mellow and does have the annoying sounds you hear in a lot of them and is more musical and melodic. Though still just not a fan of electronic music.

I was fully prepared to give this a 1 or a 2 based off the cover. Actually pretty surprised. I didn't hate it...it's got some grooves, it's got some hooks. It's cool. Probably wouldn't come back to it, but it's a solid 3. Glad I listened to it and can appreciate it.

Whats the deal with electronic French duos? I'm grading this one very subjectively because it has a special place in my heart. Heard it for the first time at a party circa 2001 and was immedately struck by how cool and chill and different it was. It may not be one of the best albums of all time but it's pretty fantastic.
I know “Sexy Boy” from the movie 10 Things I Hate About You. The rest of the album wasn’t as bad as I was expecting it to be, still just background music to me.
I really liked this album and I’m going to rate it as a 4/5. The instruments were very enveloping and it makes you feel relaxed but dynamic at the same time. This album would be perfect for a unique romantic dinner. I will definitely listen to it again. Moon Safari (1998) by Air.

Good and it was kinda magical bc at the end of my awesome day we went to this fancy sushi spot and Sexy Boy played… anyways i ljkedd it a little less than i thought i would but some bangers for sure!
I have not heard this before. None of these songs sound familiar which is surprising since this record came out when I was in college, I guess no one in my orbit was into this at the time and neither were the radio or MTV. I guess MTV had pretty much stopped playing music by this time. This starts off good with some nice downbeat with some funk keyboards, but it kinda stagnates halfway through and begins to sound more like easy listening and it ends on a dud. I think this could have been a better album if a few songs were cut, or if the entire back half was cut and it was released as an EP.
The first part is excellent. I had been listening to several of these songs for years with no awareness of the album or the band, my spouse silently added them to our Spotify playlist. Sneaky.

98 was a good year, ey Si? Holds back, taking too much care not to mess up its mascara and creases, but this idée fixe is forgivable as this record emerged in the wake of the coked-up bumwaving of le Britpop, and it’s set off by eternally unfashionable sentimentality and a clutch of glorious tunes.
Warm and soothing analogue memories of the late '90s flood from the first note. This was always my favorite of the "cool electronica featuring a folk singer named Beth" crowd, and held its own today despite "Sexy Boy" dragging a bit. Two records with a Charlie's Angels-inspired song in a week is absolutely one too many, but I'll keep this one around.
So many songs I recognise but didn't realise they were all on the same album, let alone the same artist! Cool.
