Reviews (page 11 of 13)
В небеса какие-то не уносит, но музыка хорошая. Приятно. Лучшая песня - For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her.
Better than I expected. Instead of most folk albums that tend to sound lonely and marose, this album has many upbeat songs. The voices tend to compliment each other as well.
Not my favorite S&G album, but still serviceable. Scarborough Fair is a classic, as is For Emily, but many others failed to leave much impression.
A solid record from the 60s. It's very very dated so it loses points for not exactly holding up well. But for what it is I think it does what it does well. It's not going to blow anyone away but if you'd never heard S&G before I can't imagine you wouldn't find something you like about it. It's probably better than 3/5 but I don't think I could really give it 4/5. See, this is why we need at least a 10 star system instead of 5.
Not my thing but I appreciate the significance.
Yeah, what can you say. It's a S&G album, and it feels the same as the others did.
it's ok, nothing special
Nice universe
Scarborough Fair really is beautiful, not matter how many times I hear it. The rest of the album is OK
Ok. A little boring
some nice songs in there, but overall not enough energy for my taste. pleasantly surprised by a couple
probably 3rd best of the ones I've heard so far
hobbit ass beat i fuck with it
I really like the medieval sound to some of the tracks, like Patterns and Scarborough Fair. Homeward Bound had more country sound and is a very pretty song. The rest didn’t resonate with me; just not to my tastes. Overall I’d say a 2.5, rounding to 3.
Good stuff
Der viele Hall war nie mein Fall
I
twinks haciendo folk muy reconfortante y tranquilo
I actually liked this more than I thought I would. I like a lit of their songs individually, but was worried that a whole album of them would be a bit... much. But there was more variety of sound than I expected that kept it interesting.
Meh
It was ok, some very nice calming songs but I'm not sure I'd listen to it again.
Calm peaceful and deep. Side note.... How could two people that create such calm and soothing music eventually hold so much hate in their hearts that they could not be in the same space together.
Soft
That "Patterns" song is a banger and so is "A Poem on the Underground Wall" but the rest didn't stand out that much to me. Nice though!
Not typically my thing. Maybe I don’t “get it”? Folk rock is just boring to me. I can feel the substance, but I can’t get deeper than a surface level listen.
Bastante agradable para lo suave que es
That’s a lot of herbs.
The ANNUNCIATION on this album
Thought 7 O’Clock News / Silent Night might be able to do what the Nothing Much Happens podcast does for me until the :23 second mark
One time my roommate said he was making “Scarborough fair bread” and I said “what goes in that” and he said “parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme”
more like semen and gay uncle. They have albums i enjoy less (sounds of silence and bridge over troubled waters) but my problem with these guys was always just how forgettable their music was for me, typically rounding up on 'average' at best (which is what this album is for me, ranked below bookends which i felt was atleast more enjoyable.)
This one is definitely mood music. I found it lost me for a minute after Scarborough Fair, but I'm glad I played it through. The songs really are beautiful. Personally, I prefer Sound of Silence but enjoyed the nostalgia
This was a surprisingly chill album. Not very long and an easy listen.
good
Boys knew how to sing for sure. Was a good hangover listen for sure but it end at that. Could see myself sleeping to this.
Most 60s music generally hasn’t aged too well. Mainly, most songs that got any sort of radio play were under 3 minutes, and as a result I feel most of them are over before they’re fully realized. That’s why I never really fucked with The Beatles or The Beach Boys. Simon and Garfunkel run into the same problem, and it’s unfortunate since I like Sound of Silence. It sounds pretty nice, I don’t mind it when it’s on, but I don’t think I’ll ever revisit it.
I can really appreciate how much work they put into the instrumentation and production (months worth, even—and it really paid off as far as I'm concerned), but otherwise I think it's just fine. I'm pretty sure I'll be into one of their other releases more.
Surprised by the lyricism and genre blending into the core folk sound. Blues, country, rock, etc… At times too period specific and high brow. Most songs a little too soft or slow for my usual taste. Favorite song is A Simple Desultory Philippic
Хороший. Но на контрасте с smith зашел слабее
Some very solid songs but enough filler that it felt much longer than it was.
A truly magical album. The harmonies, the poetic lyrics everything I love about this album and this group. Some songs are little pretentious in my option and some f the more humorous or novelty esque songs don’t land for me but hey you can’t be thst uptight all the time. Overall loved this album!
There are WAY better spice combinations in this world. Take equal parts of garlic powder, salt, and sugar, add some black pepper, and a dash of cayenne, and you have one awesome rub for ribs. For a nice kick on your cinnamon toast, add nutmeg, a pinch of cloves and a hint of cayenne to your cinnamon and sugar and you'll have morning heaven. Heck, even a nice mix of garlic and salt on your pan fried chicken will satisfy flaor seekers. Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme are ok, but pale before the mixes I've laid out here.
Has me feelin’ groovy.
Thoroughly meh
It was very chill and relaxing. Think of still turn to other folk style music but can appreciate that they're good.
Scarborough Fair // Patterns // Homeward Bound // The 59th Street Bridge Song //
Pleasant and nostalgic, but a little dull overall.
Great stuff
Definitely a 3½, plenty of lovely songs, second half is a bit of a miss for me. Sorry, gotta go seek the breast of darkness and be suckled by the night.
Somehow my 5th Paul Simon album at just over 200 albums. Have loved them all but think this might be my least favorite so far. Still really beautiful and I love the depressing news update over silent night to end the album. I hear a lot more Bob Dylan influence in this one than the later ones I’ve heard. Rating: 3.5
most of it was just alright, standouts were Scarborough Fair, homeward bound and silent night. the news layed underneath was quite disturbing. vocals are great, although most songs were far too short. most hovered around 2 mins, very short album overall. apart from 3 mentioned, just average Simon and garfunkel about 3.5/5
I enjoy the Boys(TM) but not their greatest stuff IMO.
lovely morning charm and old vibes come with the calming guitar sound
Pleasant, folksy, humdrum of an album. "Homeward Bound" is of course lovely. "A Simple Desultory Philippic" is a funny and acidic contrast to most of the album. "For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her" is luscious and sweet. And "The 59th Street Bridge Song" is, of course, groovy. The 1966 production is not stellar, however; I felt that the instrumentation was unnecessarily tinny, while the harmonies were weedy and not sonorous, which makes me like almost every song less. It's clearly a product of its time, and I'm too picky.
Beautiful guitar playing, beautiful music...but sounds so dated. A great record of its time.
3.5/5. Good, I like Simon and Garfunkel. Not my favorite album by them, however.
Beautiful vocal harmonies and musical arrangements, but lacks any bite. I can see why people like Bon Dylan outshone these guys early on, which is a shame because the lyrics are great. It just needs that little extra oomph.
It's alright
It's okay
whimsical, fun album. Things flow and mesh well but not my favorite Simon and Garfunkel album
Great lyrics, chill tunes. Not a huge Simon and Garfunkel fan but enjoyed it.
Not the best album to listen to while indoor rowing but great music to think about summer when you're in a snowstorm
Pleasant, I suppose - it's just too slight, without much emotionality, for me to get excited. Maybe it's a bit too clean? I felt like it was going for intimate but never quite got there. Enjoyed some songs well enough but won't be returning. Two and a half. Fave track: Scarborough Fair/Canticle
(3.5) Really big fan of Simon & Garfunkel. I remember watching The Graduate in high school when I was really getting into them and some of the tracks from this album were on that soundtrack. Solid album overall. Can’t remember if I listened to this one all the way through before, but both the title track and “Homeward Bound” are in my everyday listening playlist. Haven’t listened to “For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her” in a while. Really like that one. Now I wanna go back and listen to the S&G records I have.
Easy listening, Scarborough fair is a classic that's lead to countless covers.
Beautiful imagery in the lyrics- specifically in "The Dangling Conversation" I love the respect for Lenny Bruce given in multiple songs
I had some notes that got wiped at some point and it's a Saturday so I'm not in the mood to try and recreate them. I liked it. Felt like there was a ton of variety in this album, compared to the Who album we listened to on Thursday. Instrumentation, dynamics, harmonies, and more.
Smooth and nice, but almost too nice it annoyed me, Homeward Bound is pretty get but most of the rest is forgettable
I never listened to an S&G album all the way through. I love their most famous gems. Four of them here in Scarborough Fair, Homeward Bound, The 59th Street Bridge Song, and For Emily, Wherever I May Find Her. I think these songs really take you to another place. I also really love Simon’s solo stuff in the 70s and 80’s. I’m not big into folk music (sorry Harry!), so I was always afraid the other songs on these S&G albums wouldn’t live up to their best work. And sadly, I don’t think they do. I was really hoping there was a wealth of great tunes here that would transport me, but I don’t think so. I even gave it a second listen and liked the songs better the second time through. But aside from the standouts, I’ve learned I’m just not that big into S&G beyond their most famous tunes.
A fun time with a bonus Dylan song
Familiar with the album and a big fan of what the two lifelong friends became. Standout tracks are Scarborough Fair, Homeward Bound (my favorite) , 59th St. Bridge & Silent Night/7 o'clock news. Their first album as S&G and it shows. But talented enough.
eu daria 3,5 estrelas, bem diferente de tudo que já ouvi, uma vibe bem legal e a primeira música foi magnífica e tem várias outras boas!
The instrumentals are lush and elegant in some places and I love it. It's a bit inconsistent and bland though, and the hippie anti-war theme didn't age well imo. That Bob Dylan parody tho, lol.
Scarborough Fair is good, but nothing else jumped out at me
I liked the songs I already knew. Not greatly taken with the others.
Not bad, not my cup of tea
It was ok. Nothing too special, will probably only listen to homeward bound again off this album
Big fan of Simon & Garfunkel, do like this album but there are some songs I can give a miss. Big Bright Green and A Simple Dulsatory Philippic don’t do anything for me. It’s not there best album though is it?
I’m a S&G fan. I’ll start by saying that. However, I feel like I wasn’t high enough for this album. There’s some good tunes and beautiful melodies but overall it’s a mid-tier album for me. Standouts are The Dangling Conversation and Homeward Bound
Homeward Bound remains one of S&G’s best songs and Scarborough Fair is just so damn pretty. The heavenly harmonies are there as is the pristine production and moments of songwriting genius, but as a whole it feels too tame for my tastes and contains too much filler for a record that already clocks in at a brisk 28 minutes. No other real standouts besides the two aforementioned tracks. Not a classic but an enjoyable enough listen.
I thought "the dangling conversation" was a Dillon track! totally radio friendly and easy on the ear throughout but not gonna rush back for another listen
Ok
Prety good, very good vibe, short and to the point
I prefer other Simon and Garfunkel projects. This was enjoyable, but I couldn't get into it that much.
I dont know… I felt nothing extra about this one. I can hear the influence these guys had all over the folk- singer songwriter genre but still I dont think I’m gonna revisit.
Kann man gut hören, sehr melodisch. Aber ohne Groove
3.25
Good harms, needs more bops.
S & G provoke two things in me: A resistance to like and a kind of Seinfeld is Unfunny reaction. The first is easily overcome by the duo's craft; The second would be a fair read if it weren't for my love of Bridge Over Troubled Water. On this early effort, I was happy to pick out the Dylan imitation, the invocation of poets. Perhaps records need more of the baroque, less jumping between short slack themes.
A nice album with classic songs.
This is alt girl/boy music, but 60/70s pilled. It isn't terrible. But I am not the biggest fan of it. Feeling a light to decent 3/5
This is the point where Simon & Garfunkel start to work for me, but it's still a little too soft and a little too uneven. There are a few real gems here though.
Surprised I liked it as much as I did.
It's fine.
Found a few songs a bit silly (beyond the intentionally silly ones) but I deeply respect this as a showcase of Simon and Garfunkel's abilities as arrangers.
Short and sweet :) really wish they'd let us rarte stuff with half stars because this is a perfect 3.5 album tbh. Few dud tracks but the highs (Patterns, Homeward Bound) are near the S&G peak
I feel like its probably an important album for the time period and it's solid. "A Poem on the Underground Wall" is my favorite.
"homeward bound" is a good "the road" song: "Tonight I'll sing my songs again I'll play the game and pretend But all my words come back to me In shades of mediocrity Like emptiness in harmony I need someone to comfort me" ^^^legit goes hard as fuck "a simple desultory philippic" is pretty dope. almost like a less funny weird al doing a dylan parody. even name drops dylan (and dylan thomas). at the end of the song he even just says "FOLK ROCK". i appreciate how short this is. 28 minutes! and i enjoyed it more than i thought i would. really nice production value for the era.
I like Simon & Garfunkel, but this album contains a lot of the Level-B hits of theirs and it seems to feed to the pretentiousness that Paul Simon's music can often steer into. Not a bad album, but this is a lot of acoustic and mellow songs that can steer towards boring folk rock. The songs are good but Paul Simon has definitely done better. But the pretentiousness on some of the songs is borderline unbearable. The last song is the news over "Silent Night," which is a move that "South Park" would not parody because it feels too on-the-nose. Track #9 is a parody of Bob Dylan's songwriting, but Simon parodies pop culture references that Dylan would use, then falls into that same trap on the last track. I had to look up if this was a parody or the call was coming from inside the house. "Flowers Never Bend with the Rainfall" is S&G's version of Coldplay's "Every Teardrop is a Waterfall," meaning they are two songs titles which an AI would write if forced to listen to 10,000 hours of either group. I would have left it with two S&G albums in this book.
Simon and Garfunkel were a musical match made in heaven so their vocals would be an easy 5. Not all of the material here has aged well so the songs are a pretty mixed bag ranging from 1 to 5. I don't know if this was more a thing of the past but it has a pretty scant play time at less than 30 minutes. This one ran pretty hot and cold for me but that pretty much sums up what S&G are to me. Their greatest hits were great but once you got much deeper than that I lose interest pretty quickly. Outside of the hits there's not much else here that grabs my attention.
Scarborough Fair is of course incredible, and Homeward Bound is a great track as well. Otherwise it’s a pretty bland offering from a duo who have more consistently strong projects
まあまあ
This is a nice little album right here. Simon and Garfunkel are definitely one of the most legendary duos in all of music, and after listening to this album, I can kinda see why. This is another short album, but it doesn't feel like it went by too quickly. The songs are fairly simple, but they're good. There are some interesting things to look at here. The closing track seems pretty fitting for right now given that it's basically Christmas time and the world is still in the never ending chaos that is the 2020s. Speaking of now, this album has aged pretty well. The writing is, again, a bit basic, but still well thought out. The mood is a bit somber, but not too somber, with some lighthearted moments thrown in there. I don't have much to say. It's a solid folk rock album, and that's kind of it. High 3/5.
AJ: Homeward Bound is wonderful. Paul Simon is amazing. The vocal harmonies are amazing.
Great harmonies, somewhat a product of it's time, lot of twee lyrics. Filled with classics but it's not something I'll ever look to put on.
Simon & Garfunkel are one of those legendary groups that you undoubtedly hear about at some point during your life. I am somewhat struggling to see why this album made this list though. Aside from the spectacular Homeward Bound, much of this album seems very... plain? I can't put my finger on the right word, but for such a seemingly influential sound, this album fails to really hit any of the marks for me. Struggling to find a reason to give this anything more than a 3, maybe even closer to a just a meh 2.5 Highlight: Homeward Bound Lowlight: 7 O'clock News / Silent Night
Not really my thing, but I can appreciate why people like it. Homeward Bound is a nice song and I like the juxtaposition of the newscast over Silent Night. It makes a pretty powerful statement.
It's good, but not totally for me Will I listen to again: 5%
Lush harmonies. Sophisticated lyrics. More Simon than Garfunkel. ‘Nuff said.
I went into this expecting to like it more than I did. I've liked many of Simon & Garfunkel's songs, but this album just contained too much experimental filler. I'm sure some will say the lyric writing is genius. Outside of a small handful of songs, I found it far too pretentious.
I might be gay now
I enjoy them but this one is too slow for me. I really dislike the title track.
Classic. Simon and Gartfunkel have written a great anti-war album. 29 min for 12 song is very low for today standards. Great production. Great lyrics. Guitar works is legendary.
I like S&G but I don't think this is their best. The song selection feels a little disjointed, which doesn't make for a good album, and even some of the vocal arrangements aren't as tight as you'd expect. Best Songs: Scarborough Fair, Flowers Never Bend in the Rainfall Listen Again: Probably Not
Not really my vine but overall good music
Homeward Bound, 59th Street Bridge Song, and Simple Desultory Philippic are highlights on this one, but there is a LOT of cringe scattered throughout. Their albums would get so much better from here on out.
I know a lot more songs in this than I thought. It's a good mellow, acoustic album. Not a go out and but, but one you won't turn off when it's played. It's a quick listen.
Mielenkiintoisia kontrapunkti harmonioita ja leppoisaa folkkia. Scarborough Fair / Canticle paras.
Okay
Okay
Nice eclectic album. Some bangers. Some not so bangers. A great album for the right sort of mood. Want to listen to it on vinyl
Kinda vibes, def good for a relaxing evening
What a beautiful, legendary album that I will spend almost no time listening to going forward. This style of music just isn't my go-to in any leisurely setting, but this is still an obvious great one. My relationship with Bob Dylan has really evolved heavily lately, as I've gone from "still not getting him" to "loving the song that parodies him the most because it still does remind me of him." Favorite track: A Simple Desultory Philippic
A few classics but largely boring. Wasn’t expecting the mean Bob Dylan parody. I’ll give it 3 because 2.5 isn’t an option.
I've never really understood the way they sing their vocals on songs. I gotta be careful driving when they're playing since I could fall asleep
Twijfel tussen 3 en 4, maar omdat ik net te weinig ken doen ik 3
It feels like they're right behind me whispering into my ears. Rating 3.4.
I'm not a big fan of the old timey folk sound of Scarborough Fair to open the album, but the rest is really good. I especially like how they follow that opener with the very 60s rock inspired Patterns. Homeward Bound and the Big Bright Green Pleasure Machine are favorites and I also like the Dylan mocking A Simple Desultory Philippic.
meh
quite a few familiar songs, but pretty sleepy.
Title track is lovely. Album is very very 1966 sounding. I'm surprised I've never heard Flowers Never Bend With The Rainfall before.
Bit bland for my tastes
I understand the appeal of Simon and Garfunkel, and the songwriting in particular on this record was great, but it did feel a bit one note and overly simplistic. Still a pleasant sounding record regardless.
It was better than I thought it was going to be, which isn’t saying much. Ultimately, this level of folk music isn’t appealing to me and as such, was a tough listen
It was good, but I wanted better
Soundtrack to my life if I were a Hobbit.
B- Scarborough Fair / Canticle 3 Patterns 3 Cloudy 4 Homeward Bound 3 The Big Bright Green Pleasure Machine 3 The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy) 3 The Dangling Conversation 4 Flowers Never Bend with the Rainfall 3 A Simple Desultory Philippic (Or How I Was Robert McNamara'd Into Submission) 3 For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her 3 A Poem On the Underground Wall 3 7 O'Clock News / Silent Night 1 I'm not a huge Simon & Garfunkel fan, so I was surprised to give this more than a 2. Although, that ending song was painfully corny. What does MLK Jr's death have to do with a Christmas song?
Just not really my thing. Still good.
i would enjoy the beginning of the songs but by the end it sounded kinda repetitive and boring its an alright album though
Little milquetoast-y. One song I hadn't heard before was good.
RANKING Patterns Scarborough Fair 7 O'clock News/Silent Night A Simple Desultory Philippic Flowers Never Bend with the Rainfall A Poem on the Underground Wall For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her The Dangling Conversation Cloudy The 59th Street Bridge Song Homeward Bound The Big Bright Green Pleasure Machine
Good vibes - easy listening. I looked at the song list and did not recognize a single one by name. But there were some gems in there I had definitely heard before. Punchy short album. Can see why they got such a following in their day.
There are great songs with great melodies and there are just nothing songs.
Made me approve Paul simon in Africa much more
calming and something new, sounds like some indie music i listen to
im sorry garfunkel is such a funny name
I particularly liked Homeward Bound. While the rest of the album was also nice, I wouldn't listen to it again.
Nothing spectacular but a very nice listening album the whole way through. Perfect length of less than 30 minutes in my opinion. Could have told me that was a Beatles album and I'd believe you. I was not expecting Silent Night to close it out mixed with a very depressing news story.
Folk rock classic, simply not exciting.
The opening track is absolutely masterful. While the rest of the album is fine, it struggles to match it. The Dangling Conversation and 7 O'Clock News are songs to save as well.
A very pleasant and pretty lightweight album. Great melodies, not much variety, a little pretentious in the lyrics. Length is good. Best song: Scarborough Fair
More pleasant music from Simon and Garfunkel that also sounds very similar to both of their solo albums (mainly Paul simons). This album was like a piece of bubblegum where it’s short and sweet but gets old after like 5 minutes (in this case 28). I liked homeward bound the most and the dumb silent night cover the least.
hmmmmmm interesting? i wouldnt listen to much more tho....!
Son los unicos que pueden hacer este tipo de musica
A couple of things that stood out for me. Definitely I can only take Simon & Garfunkel in small doses. I don't think I could listen to this to frequently. Very interesting backstories on some of the songwriting credits. I'd read about the connection to the Martin Carthy arrangement of Scarborough Fair and grief ofer not attributing to 'Traditional'. I hadn't known of issues with Cloudy though. One song really surprised me for how Bob Dylan like it sounded. I may be wrong, but recordings of some of the songs felt different than I remembered. Maybe different mixes/recordings, or maybe in my mind.
good
It’s a timeless sound and their version of Scarborough fair is amongst the most gorgeous things ever recorded. Homeward Bound hints at the songwriting greatness that was to follow. The rest of this album doesn’t consistently hit that level but there’s certainly nothing wrong with any of this
That opener is a classic! I said it on the prior albums but I'm not a huge S&G fan and I don't think this album does anything to change that for me. I did like Homeward Bound.
Can’t help but think this didn’t age too well
Not my fav, last song was good tho
Fine album that's fine but not as good as the 2 albums that follow. Doesn't feel that cohesive.
I'd only heard "Scarborough Fair" so had low expectations going in. First listen was pleasantly surprised. Second listen bored again. Its just fine.
Scarborough Fair/Canticle is quite dreamy. My faves from this are Cloudy and A Simple Desultory Philippic
The harmonies stand out the most, its an extremally melodic and calming folk album. I can tell apart the songs easily, and most are great, some songs fall flat if its due to boredom or it just does not sound good, but that is only a miniscule part of the album. Favorites: Scarborough Fair / Patterns / Cloudy / The Dangling Conversation / For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her / A Poem on the Underground Wall / 7 O'clock News I liked most of the album, and the rest was good / alright, there is some filler, but overall it was good. 100% relisten.
3/5
3 words to describe folk music. It's exactly what youd expect, although there's the odd 60s rock flair that pops into some of the tracks. Enjoyable, although I'm rarely in the mood for this kind of sound.
Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme is the third album by American folk rock duo Simon & Garfunkel. The folk rock album is considered the duo's breakthrough and one of their best works. It is certified triple platinum in the US and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. I enjoyed the relaxing vibes on this album. It was an intelligent, creative, and beautiful piece that reflected the social issues of the mid-60's while being a cornerstone of folk rock for decades to come. Everyone should give this album a listen at least once.
I really enjoyed Bookends, but I think this is just a *little* too twee for me. Great production regardless! 3.5
Not terrible, but not really for me. There’s a Christmas song?? 6.5/10
Tolerable, one or two bop moments
Very pleasant
Enjoyably chill
This album really makes me think I'd never want to get stuck in a conversation with Paul Simon. These are lyrics from a man who thinks he is extremely important. Some of these songs are way too over the top folk-y, some of them are pretty good. Was familiar with most of them but pleasantly surprised by the one where they pretend to be Dylan.
I can see where the high ratings for this album come from but it just felt a bit sickly to me. Felt a bit too simple. I think I'd have to be in a certain mood to listen to this again.
It was what I expected. I like them.
Felt like I was missing something so tried to relisten, but still couldn't get into it.
Eh it was fine. Not really my thing.
It's a good album. Some songs are great, some are good, none are bad. But there's three Simon and Garfunkel albums on the list. I like the other two better. That makes this record a good candidate to make way for newer artists. Favorite song: The Dangling Conversation
Is it good? Yes. Is it a good album? Eh. Better than the rushed “Sounds of Silence” album, but still shows room for artistic improvement. A couple of standout songs, but cohesively sounds more like a compilation than an album. Can’t rightly put my finger on why. But hey, the music’s still great, and once you watch “The Graduate” (1967) you’ll struggle to find a better mental picture for “Scarborough Fair/Canticle”. Standout Songs: “Scarborough Fair / Canticle” “Homeward Bound” “For Emily, Wherever I May Find Her”
MEh
So aromatic
The album feel's like a musical set in Wales about the rural and urban life during coal industrial revolution, directed by The Beatles with Highlander as the lead singer and main actor PS- Now I understand why the cat died, curiosity is a wondrous thing as this final piece of weird art. 10 as an experience and a poetic piece, but as a musical album it's kinda weak, though it has some fire : Patter's - 9 7 O'CLOCK News - 9
Pretty decent
The hits are solid there were a couple descent deep cuts (silent night, the dylan one, patterns) "your mom is so unhip that when you say dylan she thinks youre talking about dylan thomas" - Paul Simon
Great for going on a rainy morning walk, but only great in that exact context
Yes, pretty, but too sweat for me.
This duo takes folk to its greatest peak by delivering great melodies that I never associated folk with before.
Great folk rock. At this time you can hear they were experimenting with aspects of psychedelia. Great songwriting as well.
Strange
Last 2 songs great, rest is boring
Lovely and herbaceous but it could use a little spice.
what a weird one. it feels so weird to hear pre-bookends/bridge S&G. not an area i'm super familiar with, and for good reason - this is pretty derivative! their sound grew to be so interesting and dynamic before an early end to their partnership, so it's weird to hear them sounding like every mid-60s folk-pop group eh!
Cooles Album:) Ich mag die Gitarrenmelodien und die ruhige Stimme dazu. Aber das ist nicht das Beste Album von Simon & Garfunkel meiner Meinung nach
Soft tracks for gentle souls. Pleasant but bloodless. Pleasingly short. Famous songs but generally forgettable. The album ends in a light ebb.
Title track and homeward bound are great, everything else is fine
Good, but a whole album is a bit too much S&G for me
This was pleasant to listen to, but nothing more
Anti-Semite should be zero
LP
S&G are great, but this album is chock full of "I'm the next great poet" vibes. Leading to several songs that are era-appropriate wankery.
I like Simon and Garfunkel but this isn't a noteworthy album
Pleasantly depressing melancholy from the 1960’s. Not going back.
A few good folky songs and a lot of fluff.
Pleasant, folky choons that hold up well for a 1966 album ‘A Simple Desultory Philippic’ (is this random song name generator?) is so Bob Dylan I had to double-take. Silent Night got blacklisted almost immediately, but other than that it was a sitting-next-to-a-log-fire-in-a-cabin-in-the-woods-style of pleasantry
Very nice. Very soft, but some lovely songs on here.
It's the same song over and over again! The Garfunkel song is rough!
Some god vocal harmonies but no stand out tracks. Would not return to it
I was not a fan of the first song and thought the whole thing might be a bust. Started to enjoy it more after that. Decent.
This is an odd rating for me. This album has four all-time great songs, which should be enough to lift any album to a five rating. “Homeward Bound” and “Scarborough Fair” are probably enough on their own to do that. But the other two — “59th Street Bridge Song” and “For Emily” find their definitive versions on another album, Simon and Garfunkel‘s Greatest Hits, where they are sung live. The versions on this album sound like tinny practice sessions in comparison. Really, you owe it to yourself to go right now to the Greatest Hits album and listen to art Garfunkel sing For Emily. We all know that Paul Simon was the musical genius of the duo, but you need to listen to the power of Garfunkel’s voice as he sings the final words of that song, accompanied by the intensity of Paul’s guitar. That’s the moment when you really appreciate Garfunkel’s voice and the magic of this duo. Other than those four incredible songs, however, the rest of the songs on this album were not hits for a reason. And two of the four are better elsewhere. Hence the 3 rating.
they like to do this thing where they get a tight, quick groove going and then immediately stop it and slow it down for a vocal line. overall i expected it to be worse!!
Fine
Very calming music at the end of a busy day.
Kaikki lempiyrttini. Estetiikka puree, itse musa vähän... tylsää. Teemana sodanvastaisuus? Mutta saa mut silti hyvälle mielelle. Sopii sunnuntaihin, kuten Simon & Garfunkel aina.
A couple of very good songs. A lot of just ok songs.
I just don't have the patience for songs about books and poems and little shops in New York like I used to.
Sooo nostalgic, my mom loves Simon & Garfunkel. I think it is just a little too slow and sad for me.
6/10
Really liked The Dangling Conversation and Homeward Bound, but overall a pretty meh album.
Not too shabby, a lil on the slow side but its still got a few hits
low 3, didn't catch me at all but seemed well written so maybe future potential
Scarborough Fair, Patterns, Homeward Bound, The Big Green Pleasure Machine — супер. A Simple Desultory Philippic — забавный трек, не знаю, чё фанаты дуэта на него ополчаются. For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her — красивая песня, переслушивать не хочется, но впечатление оставляет приятное. В остальном — невыразительный в собственной мягкости фолк.
A pretty decent record, but it definitely wears its influences (British folk-rock and Dylan) on its sleeve. I get more enjoyment out of Nick Drake or Steeleye Span.
I don't love S&G, I think the 1st track is the only one I've liked on this album. For S&G it's good but to be honest I can't get into it much. It's fine in the background for sure.
I liked this. It was a very soothing, meditative listen. The melodies are immaculate, these guys were clearly very good at writing songs. The pallette of instruments kept things interesting as well. Also I think I much prefer shorter listens, my mind starts to wander after the 40 minute mark on a record so clocking in under 30 is a huge plus.
Another very good album from Simon & Garfunkel. Some great songs
Good and boring.
Alright with a few good songs but not their best album
liked, but wouldn’t listen in my free time.
Pleasant listen with Scarborough Fair and Homeward Bound the ones I was most familiar with. Everyone - Simon, Garfunkel, Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme all did good work here and can be pleased with themselves. 3 stars.
Very melancholic, perhaps too melancholy. Almost plagiaristic-ally Bob Dylan. They even mention him by name. Not to say I didn’t like the album, I enjoyed every song excluding the final track. 3/5
I enjoyed this album. It didn't make me go WOW! But I still enjoyed it. My favourite songs would have to be Cloudy and Scarborough Fair/ Carnticle. I love the magical enchanted forest-y vibe from Scarborough Fair! It transports me to another world.
Meh. Better than wet socks.
good songwriting, however nicht ganz meine schiene. Didn‘t blow me away.
Silly
me sorprendió creí q me iba a gustar menos 7.5/10
Not goat but soothing album with great instrument
Mooi maar niet zo mooi als bookends
Simon is great when he's at his best. However, a throwaway Dylan impression, and two trad songs on a 28 minute record is a pretty disappointing return. 'Homeward Bound' is a great train song though and some of the harmonies are damn lovely so I guess it's a high three.
Nice, pleasant, gentle acoustic folk album with some lovely songwriting. Apparently the tone of this record contrasted with the sense of impending doom in 1966, but my understanding of 1960s history is not strong enough to take anything from this context. Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: Homeward Bound Date listened: 24/10/22
Leuk hoor. Beetje softe muziek, maar wel afwisselend.
A little underwhelming; Simon seems not yet at the height of his songwriting powers nor Garfunkel at his best as a singer. The match up seems almost forced here. Scarborough Fair, Silent Night and Cloudy just fail to ignite, with excitement only building on some more up tempo tracks - but even Homeward Bound has gotten tired with repetition, same with Feeling Groovy. A curiosity.
Nice one
Lekker rustig.
This is the first studio album I've listened to by these guys, which is weird because I've meant to dive into their catalog before—every time I've ever heard an album track by them I've always dug it. Anyway, I discovered a couple gems on this one. Overall: The production is often great, but more often than not, I found the arrangements distracting (e.g. the live versions of Homeward Bound and For Emily are much better than the ones found here. Those are stripped down so you can actually hear the singers). Paul Simon is a fantastic and quirky songwriter, but he hadn't quite found his voice yet on this album. His efforts at satire are embarrassing, and I often found myself rolling my eyes at his too earnest and sometimes pretentious lyrics. Still, Scarborough Fair is kind of magical. I dug Patterns. Cloudy was cool. And The 59th St Bridge Song . . . maybe this was a remastered version or something, but damn, I was getting some serious ASMR action from that tune, which I never noticed before. I also love how short it is. It comes, makes you smile, and leaves before it gets cloying. Not a bad listen, but I was hoping the deeper cuts would be better. There weren't any track that were as great as, say, Richard Cory or Hazy Shade of Winter. But I'm up for listening to their other LPs.
Homeward Bound is a five-star song but the most of the rest of this album doesn't showcase the amazing work of S&G. I still enjoyed it but as I know they have better music, it felt average
Good song writing but not overly catchy and nothing I'll come running back to. I enjoy Simon and Garfunkel but this album was on the boring side for me. Still a good listen.
Homeward Bound is outstanding. The rest is very mediocre for Simon & Garfunkel standards.
A nice listen, homeward bound is def my fav.
Listened to on 9/22/22 3/5 Favorite song:silent night 7:00 news Very easy to listen to - nothing spectacular but some weird fusions
Easy to listen to and quite folksy. I actually liked the title track the least. Favorite was Homeward Bound.
Not my favourite Simon and Garfunkel album. The songs are okay, but the best is yet to come.
I am very thankful I wasn't a teenager when this came out...I would have been an insufferable hippy... but I do love Simon and Garfunkel...and some of these songs hold up so well to me... Scarborough Fair, Homeward Bound, 59th Street Bridge, For Emily, but Silent Night is more like a timepiece ... some tracks are a little folksy too, Cloudy, is almost an afterthought of a song... but these two, when singing together...still have a magical sound together.
Easy listening
Need to listen again, pretty calm
Sounds like they put some filler in to turn amazing singles into an album
Solid; not the type of music I normally listen to…feeling groovy my favourite
6/10
Enjoyed every song. strong 3
Nice light album. Nothing really stands out.
Gryta
Some nice songs, not much else to say. One or two have been ruined a little by singing them in school choir years ago..
Chill album, mellow, poetic
I mean it’s just Simon & Garfunkel. Good but nothing mind blowing.
Not my fav.
Nice and chill
I've always loved their harmonies and their soft, relaxing sound. Not my favorite S&G album, but a good one nonetheless.
Pleasant but dull
Another week, another Paul Simon album. A couple of moments, a traditional English ballad, a terrible Dylan pastiche, a Christmas Carol made interesting by having the evening news program recorded under it providing a nice juxtaposition.
Signs of greater things to come.
I think I need to do the entire 1001 album experiment at least three times, because it seems unfair to Simon & Garfunkel to have me judge this album on a beautiful and hot July Friday when I have an exciting weekend to look forward to. I might rate this album higher on a different day, in an altogether different mood. I cannot deny the poetry of the songwriting, especially on the iconic Scarborough Fair, Dangling Conversation, and Flowers Never Bend. Green Pleasure Machine was just stupid fun that made me smile. For Emily was my least favorite track on the album, and I felt emotional in the closing Of the album with 7 o’clock news, and I was thinking how we could probably create an entire new version annually or less.
-Some kinda cool and spooky vocal effects and harmonies in "Patterns." Also the backing drums are cool -I like the upbeat pace of "The Big Bright Green Pleasure Machine." The drums are also kind of shredding -Woah the synth kinda go crazy in "A Simple Desultory Philippic." Also lots of pop culture references that I at least kinda get. Also Bob Dylan parody thrown in there -I like how everything is thumping at the same time in "A Poem on the Underground Wall" -"7 O'Clock News / Silent Night" is pretty spooky combo of, well, the news and "Silent Night" -Nice, with some interesting points, but other than "A Simple Desultory Philippic" there is nothing that makes me want to listen to any part of the album again
A classic but not mind blowing so only a solid 3*
Nah, not for me. Americans covering bad English folk songs is unnecessary, and the other tracks sound like an attempt to copy the title(ish) track. 7 o'clock news/silent night is the one original thought here, just weird enough to maintain interest.
Parsley, Sage, Rosemary And Thyme is undeniably well-crafted by legends, it's just not so much my thing or my speed. It's a bit twee in places, a bit too 60s in places, but does a great job of being everlasting despite a 28 minute run-time. Easy 3/5.
This is beautiful, very gentle, folksy music. There aren't many cleverer lyricists than Paul Simon, but this is all a little bit too gentle for me. Homeward Bound is the best of the bunch, and Scarborough Fair / 59th Street Bridge Song not too far behind, but it doesn't have enough bite. 3/5.
not much my type of music…some brilliant compositions pop up anyway though…
There's at least a glimpse into Simon's immense talent here, in "Patterns". And of course there are hits here, but otherwise it's unspectacular.
Ganz, ganz schlechte 3 Sterne.
Pretty good album, some real classics on here.
Tasty.
A most pleasant listen if slightly pretentious (just too earnest) at times (see last cut). Some lovely moments – the title cut/opener, and “For Emily” – and pretty authentic as a ‘60s artifact (both a weakness and a strength). One tries not to let anti-Simon feelings that have emerged in the years since (not just cultural appropriation but the sense of entitlement and just being insufferable as a person) cloud one’s objective judgment on this one.
3/5 niceish
Okay
i might say it's okay, i enjoyed it
that was not my bag baby. great harmonies though, just not my bag
"I've lost my harmonica Albert" - haha, ded!
It's pretty good. I understand why it's on this list. I'm just not a huge fan of this particular record.
Bookends is in my Top10 but I've never managed to get into this one apart from the hits it's populated by mid-60's music for the socially conscious College student. I consider them girding up for later times. Listening the whole way through doesn't change my opinion- great timeless song then a filler which really shows it's age.
Добротный альбом, который достоин попадания в список. Без явных хитов (которых у этого дуэта немало), но зато цельный.
This is very pastoral. The first song ,Scarborough fair’ was the best one. Pretty simple songwriting here but it has its charm. Overall I think 3 stars for this one. It was enjoyable but pretty run of the mill.
I like it just fine, although it never ever ever occurs to me to actively want to listen to it. Why is that?
I like Simon and Garfunkel even though I typically do not like folk music. I was familiar with a majority of these songs. There were some that I did not know. The album is relatively short which was a little surprising.i probably would not listen to the entire album again but I would listen to certain songs.
3.7 - Not as rich and satisfying as other Paul Simon albums. "Scarborough Fair" is a quiet beauty filled with hushed intensity, a masterpiece. There are other moments of beautiful poetry and melody - "Patterns", "Homeward Bound", "For Emily...". Mixed in are a few misses. The gentleness of "The Dangling Conversation" becomes cloying to my ears. "A Simple Desultory Philippic" is an homage to Bob Dylan that's too fawning. "7 O'click News/Silent Night" doesn't land with the same impact as I imagine they thought it might.
Good, but I really dislike Scarborough Fair. Always have.
