Reviews (page 5 of 7)

i like it, i like Aimee mann, but this is very clearly not her best work.

First song was pretty good, but the rest were pretty meh and forgettable.

Odd choice - there’s significance in it being her debut but there was better material to follow, especially Bachelor No 1 and Lost In Space. This album has brilliant tracks, largely concentrated in the first half but it trails off towards the end.

This sure was a 90s singer-songwriter album!

Some talent here for sure, though the lyrics are very, well, angst girl genre. Vocally a bit weak as well.

This album started out relatively strong but really fizzled out by the end. Definitely a victim of coming out during the CD era.

Yllättävän vähän kuunteluita levyn kappaleita tälle listalle kuuluvalle. Rentofiiliksistä vähän countryfolkkimaista indie rockki tyyppistä singersongwriter musaa. Sopii ihan hyvin aurinkoiseen rekka-autoiluun. Kotona. Pelle-Hermanni lopetus

Incredibly non-offensive album

Surprised I hadn’t heard this album before, it’s right in my wheelhouse but 2-3 years before I developed my musical taste.

whatever

First time that I have listened to Aimee Mann...kind of sounds like a Sheryl Crow, without her gift for an infectious hook....

Reviews for this album are a bit negative in my opinion, yes it’s certainly not the most unique album of all time and certainly not one of the best albums of the 90’s or even just 94 but there’s some good songs it’s all listenable and enjoyable. 3/5

Started off pretty decent but crept towards Tori Amos territory with some of the odder songs. 5/10

I enjoy Aimee Mann's song writing but for some reason the way she delivers those songs always feels a little lack luster to me. Great production from Jon Brion as always. I can see how this would be an essential album to listen to, but it doesn't have a lot of replay value for me.

I think her best work was getting her toe cut off in Big Lebowski. Then prolly 'Till Tuesday, and then maybe this. It's decent song writing. Reasonably good melodies. But I'm not really into it.

It was ok. There was a lack of emotion on some songs and that's what I didn't like. Other than that, it was okay, 5.6/10

Well crafted songs. No complaints, but not striking lightning in me either. I do like her voice.

Totally fine 90s alt-rock. It's peak semi-boring 90s.

Even after all these years, this album is still not as good as I wanted it to be.

Hmm nothing too spectacular, drags a bit too long for me. Felt like her voice was cracking a lot but idk Saved tracks: Put Me On Top, Say Anything, I Should’ve Known, 4th Of July

Was OK.

Felt nice to discover Aimee 6.5/10 Fave: 4th of July

Hadn't listened to her before, it was alright, I doubt I'll ever listen to her again.

This grew on me. Def was vibing by the end. Very 90s.

Not sure what I'm missing here but didn't get into this at all.

This was alright - very of its time. I think if I'd've encountered it around uni time I'd have been well into it. It definitely doesn't deserve the hate it's getting in some of these reviews! 🙄 Fave track - "I Should've Known" was a good opener - would've liked the album to carry on in that vein more! "I Could Hurt You Now" was also a stand out...

More generic than I was hoping. There are traces of something more unique and interesting in the music, but this album fails to truly give it the time to shine. A song would usually start out in an intriguing way, and then nothing would come of it, which was frustrating. The music that was present wasn't bad, but the peeks of more interesting music just makes me frustrated that the whole album doesn't have that sound. My favourite song was Jacob Marley's Chain.

I really like her work with the band Til' Tuesday and plenty of songs from her solo album Mental Illness, but this one just doesn't click with me. The entirety of Save Me >>>>> this whole album

Disc lluminós i radiant.

very tasteful, which is not entirely desirable

I didn’t finish listening to it but from what I did hear I did enjoy.

This album was considerably better than I thought it would be going in. The first two tracks are quintessential 90s music--honestly could be part of a soundtrack to describe how they sounded. The most popular track, 4th of July, was comfortably the worst one for me. I appreciate this singer-songwriter album for approaching the music holistically--it made for a much more cohesive listening experience than most of the others here. Favorite track: Fifty Years After the Fair

Enjoyed

Really enjoyed this album, it was fun. Not much here to rag on, but also not much to rave over. 3/5

Not bad but it's just kinda there and not doing anything interesting.

I recognize the name but I don't think I could identify any of her songs. The first 25 seconds had me optimistic for something a bit more experimental, so I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed that this album was start to finish, singer-songwriter pop rock. Not that it's bad, it's just that the intro hinted at something that could have had a wider style palette. I kept waiting for a song to anchor this album for me, but it never came. The vocal delivery might have been holding this back. The lyrics have some emotion, but the singing feels a bit too laid back. Highlights: I Should Have Known, I've Had It, Way Back When 2.75

Better than I expected. Decent background music. Lacked a standout track and the country vibe was not necessary.

Almost a 4, it's a very solid pop album. Not much else to say

Yeah pretty good

Good album!I I’ll be revisiting it for sure.

Not bad, quite pleasant. But not super interesting either. One and done.

noh on miellekästä musiikkia... pop rokkia, parempi kuin oletin (underrated). ei mikään populääri albumi ainakaan spotifyssä, parhaat biisit max 100k plays.. miksi vitussa elvis costello mainittu album summaryssä jacob marley's chain

Yeah, pretty good. First half of the album felt stronger to me.

A surprisingly decent collection of pop songs, but definitely could have gone to the grave without hearing them.

bien tranqui 7.5/10

Liked her sound most of the time

Pop suavecín de cantaautora. Ni fu ni fa.

Un poco rollo. Parecido a Shania Twain. 3

I was excited to see an Aimee Mann album on this list, but I must admit I was a bit puzzled by the choice itself. I'd say any one of her next three releases would have been a better choice, especially Bachelor No. 2. This remains a very good album, but I'd struggle to justify its inclusion in such a limited format list. Since I do believe Aimee Mann is more than worthy of a nod, I'm giving this a 3, but it would surely be upgraded to 4/5 if a more relevant album of hers was selected. If you enjoyed this at all, I would recommend digging deeper into her discography, as there's certainly more good stuff to be found, even better stuff for a good portion of her career!

Nice easy Listening album

First song, it comes off as a little generic. Kind of original Bangles.

Pleasant but largely forgettable. Okay voice, good lyrics, a few catchy songs, mostly kind of downers.

too long favs stupid thing could’ve been anyone i should’ve known

Ágætis gítar-köntrískotið-popp. Aimee er svöl.

I’ve always liked Aimee Mann’s voice. She’s a good lyricist too. This is a solid singer-songwriter album but there wasn’t a lot on it that stood out to me to make me want to return to it anytime soon. There were a few moments where the music took on a full-bodied rock sound (the second half of “Say Anything,” “I Could Hurt You Now”) and I would have liked more of that.

I've heard of her before but never listened on my own. I felt like the album was just OK. Maybe she is very influential and thus warrants a spot on this list, and this is one of the better of her albums? I really didn't love her voice. There's this concept in singing that I think about sometimes, where the anatomical sum of someone's voice can lead to them just not having an attractive singing voice- regardless of training and practice. It's just that they don't have a voice that attracts people on a more objective level than "well it's just not your preference", and I kind of feel like she has that. I think that a lot of indie rock acts have singers that "put on" a voice in order to make their voice interesting. Which is fine! But with her I just find her voice to be kind of dull, and the music doesn't do enough to pick up the slack. I think this is really prominent in track 4, "Could've Been Anyone", where it has a fun 90's sampled drum n bass groove to start, then a big room drumset rock sound smashes through and the energy quickly builds and then..... oh.. her voice comes in and the air is kind of taken out of the room. It's almost like the band is jamming together in one room and she is in another building. It sounds like it's produced like that and thus, it feels like that. Looking at the album in context, this came out in 1993. Also in 1993 was In Utero, Siamese Dream, Enter the Wu-Tang, Bjork's Debut. Doggystle - Snoop Dogg. Some singles from 1993: "I Will Always Love You" - Whitney Huston, "Can't Help Falling In Love" - UB40, "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" - The Proclaimers. Looking at this is context, the sound on this album just feels kind of pedestrian to me. Those other records that came out that year are probably on this list and in my opinion blow this record out of the water. Grasping at some positives here, I thought "4th of July" was a nice track. The downtempo ballad was nice and I liked it here early in the album (but not too early!). Bass playing was really tastefully done, and I enjoyed the other instruments like the synths and vibraphone. Her voice comes across nice here as well. I think it fits these ballad type of tracks better than the rock band arrangements, and I found these tracks to be the better ones on the album, like "Mr. Harris", "I know there's a word", "I've Had It" - which btw how can I not love a song with lyrics like : "And dan came in from jersey He went to get the drums And if buddy ever comes we can get if off the ground" I ended up liking the second half of this album much more than the first half, and I'm not surprised because there's so many more slower ballad like songs on the second half, but I am surprised that the album has such a big "first half / second half" contrast. I tend to write these in a James Joyce-ian stream of consciousness style and I started thinking this album was going to unfortunately be another 1 on the list, but then it built up to a 2, and now I'm giving it a 3. But it's a middling 3, like a 3.0. The second half saved it. I'm going to listen to some of her other music to see if she has more softer arrangements- because the ones with a more rock sound really didn't grab me.

Music is ok, but I don't like the plain-Jane tone of her vocals. I can tell a lot of crafting has gone into the songwriting and arrangement but the voice tamps it down.

Pretty interesting sound

Pretty inoffensive

Good singer and the music is right.

90's feeling, kinda pop-rock-ey

i like lilith but this might be too rock n roll for me. lets see. yea. its a fine album but not always my cup of tea. The playlist it recommended like it i dug.

I probably should've listened to this on release.

3/5. It’s an interesting perspective that provides a solid collection of songs to the indie rock scene.

Alright. Decent 90’s music

Good 90s feel

Definitely hear the early 90s alt rock influence here. Gets a little slow for my taste after the first couple of songs though

Found it a bit dated, however clearly some very good songwriting going on. The album seemed rather consistent too, which was nice.

It was fine. First songs were a bit forgettable in my opinion, but I think it got better into the second half of the album, though the last song just sounded silly and confusing. I thought Jacob Marley's Chain was really beautiful, and I kinda wish the album had some more folk-esque songs like it. Favourite: Jacob Marley's Chain

Not an unpleasant time, but I'm not sure why it belongs on this list. I will say, this is the rare album that gets better as it goes on. It's back loaded, and not front loaded! Wow.

Not the Aimee Mann album that should be represented on the list. But it really doesn't matter since all of her solo work sounds the same. Let's be honest: Mann's best moments came from when she fronted 'Til Tuesday (Voices Carry is a 5), and she's a bit overrated as a solo artist because she's good friends with people like film director Paul Thomas Anderson. This isn't too say her efforts are bad. They all mostly fall into the "pretty good" category. Another way to put it is her solo work is fine. The West Coast Elite keeps trying to sell the world on how she's the Joni Mitchell of her generation. Thankfully, no one is buying buying it. I really like Aimee Mann's cover of The Cars' "Drive", but that's not on this album.

Dawson's Creek vibez

50 Years After The Fair Sounds like Tom Petty could be the guest vocalist. I am not a huge fan of the guitar sounds, reminds me a lot of country guitar from the 90s. The overall effect of her sound is this feeling of toothlessness.

I like her name. Otherwise...meh.

Never heard of this before, kinda Cheryl Crow vibes? Poppy, rocky, countryish sorta stuff with a coat of 1990s over the top. Not too bad really, didn't blow my hat off but competent enough. 3/5.

Pop, 1993. A normal record which is not memorable or very interesting but on the other side it's not bad at all. The tracks have nothing special but they flow quite fluently. To describe this album in one word: decent.

Begon veelbelovend, maar werd wat eentonig later

Good album.

Some interesting lyrics and hooks but overall, not my style. A little boring.

Lovely

Whatever

It was pretty good? A weird mix of alt-rock and country that actually kind of works well. I liked her voice and song structures. 3.5/5

Honestly this is not the best Aimee Mann album. An album or two should make the list, probably Lost in Space or The Forgotten Arm.

Fun enough

Super easy listening when it's on, but once it is over I could hardly tell you a single song title. It just doesn't seem to leave behind any strong feelings or impression. 5/10

In general I am pretty big Aimee Mann fan. This is a solid but less than spectacular album...just typical AM sound. 3/5

3.5 stars. really liked the album a lot.

Tytuł płyty pasuje

My initial impression was that she was a discount Alanis Morrissette, but as the album went on, it became clear that she's got some real songwriting chops. I'm still not convinced this belongs on the list, but it was better than I expected. Best track: Mr. Harris

I liked this. Knew the name, never listened to her albums. Despite being a little overproduced I liked most of the songs. Worth a repeat listen.

She's got some talent, but feels like the producer tried to fill every moment with tricks.

Nothing really jumped out at me on this album. I like Aimee's music, and this was an easy listen.

Completely forgettable. But fine. Not sure why it's on the list. Wouldn't turn it off if it came on again, but not seeking it out, either.

Aimee Mann nije mi dobro, aimee mann, nije mi dobro!!! Could've Been Aynone, Stupid Thing...I've Had It (podsjeća nekako na National, al više instrumentalno).

Decent

nto bad

Didn't mind this at all

Some cool instrumental stuff happening, and she has that great millennial dread that many of her contemporaries demonstrate and that I quite enjoy. But overall samey.

Solid 90s

surprised how much I enjoyed this

Fun 90's. Inoffensive but nothing exceptional.

Was easy listening, so easy I forgot I was listening to it.

Whatever by singer-songwriter Aimee Mann is another album on this list that I did not expect. She has made several better albums. Maybe because it's her solo debut. Anyway, "I Should've Known" and "Stupid Thing" are the best tracks and it is fine as a whole but not outstanding.

Aimee has one of those voices that's pretty good, but you don't expect anything from. I feel really similarly about what I've heard of Joni Mitchell, so it's a compliment in a way. I enjoyed the album for how different the songs were and about the range of story telling within it. Also, I learned that she plays Opal, a.k.a. Giant Woman, on Steven Universe and that counts for something. Jokes aside, this was a decent listen and I know that at least one song will stick with me. Favorite songs: 4th Of July Stupid Thing Jacob Marley's Chain

Good 90s sound

Pop suavecín de cantaautora. Ni fu ni fa.

Whatever. Fine 90s singer-songwriter stuff, nothing spectacular. Some album I listened to recently was noted for the band being unable to come up with an album title and their record label was putting pressure on them. Maybe that's what led Aimee Mann to "Whatever." But whatever is also the feeling I came away from the album with. However, it did introduce me to Nick Hornby's "31 Songs," a book I'm very interested to read.

2021.12.08 Mr Harris

It's like diet The Pretenders. Good, hooky songs and sharp lyrics. Honestly though, I fell off and got bored. Hours later, I don't remember a single motif from the album. 3.5/5.

Oh this is a nice album. Sounds like Taylor Swifts older sister lol. This music just makes me feel good. The sound that could play in the radio all day because it's so easy to listen to, but it would quickly get very boring. Made my day I wanna give it a 4. The lyrics are nice too. Probably deserves a 3 because she doesen't actually sing that well. but idc:))

Fun 90s pop

I only know Aimee Mann from the magnolia soundtrack and this album isn’t as good as that but it still solid. I wa shining to it by the end but few songs really stood out. Feels like a proto-Taylor Swift album. Fav song: Say anything

I liked it a lot more than I thought I would and it was a more varied record than I anticipated.

Un poco rollo. Parecido a Shania Twain.

Meh, nice?

Leuk rustig maar niet speciaal

Beautiful songs, beautiful voice.. just not in the mood for 90s rocky romanticism, not feeling it now.. but know where to go if I ever do!

Middling, it bobbed along merrily. Would listen again.

I enjoyed this. It's MOR soft rock, but lyrically engaging and has a nice feeling about it. It sounds like someone singing from the heart. A bit of a country vibe in places. 3.5/5

Not bad... not exactly my cup of tea. I found myself dragged into the songs with more of a narrative like Mr. Harris, but at other parts of the albums the songs/delivery kind of bled together. I wish this album had the Magnolia song on it.

Rating: 5/10 Best songs: I should’ve known,

Decent enough singer/songwriter fare whilst not particularly my bag.

Not too bad..reminded me a bit of Sheryl Crow. Didn’t hate it!

These feel like songs that would have been in the background of my life during my college years then later, in the background of grocery stores as I got older. This album is a lovely listen, with thoughtful and mature songwriting and a nice pop sensibility. It is tightly and slickly produced, with not a flaw to speak of. And Mann’s vocals are pretty perfect. But I listened to the whole thing twice, and I’m surprised to say that I kind of checked out about halfway in. Like six songs were enough and I sort of mentally got the point. Mann would have really benefited from an edit here. She could have dropped three songs and ended up with a much better album.

Not much to say. Decent.

Its an OK album I don't dislike it but think its very mediocre, I'm a 90s person and there are just way more better sounding albums from that time, its very 90s sounding but its pretty boring Its definitely not a must hear album and I'm not sure how it got on this list its well produced but doesn't excite.

2 - not for me

Whatever indeed, this thing is so boring it’s hard to feel anything about it. The music is a generic and safe version of ‘90s rock, her big voice also hits those mall-core notes, and the hookless songs make you wonder why these particular sounds were put together into a supposedly cohesive track. It isn’t without merit - it is inoffensive - but I don’t want to listen to it.

별로...

I hoped for more. I liked maybe 2 songs. Some of them went on for too long. I can appreciate it for what it is; it just isn’t for me.

Ok... like, whatever

Firmly middling 2.5 stars

Boring music for boring people

Whatever - Aimee Mann 1993 This was grueling and so boring. While the background of her breaking away from the corporate music machinery promised something impactful, the actual listening experience just didn't translate. The production and songwriting felt incredibly flat and failed to grab my attention or keep me engaged all the way through. A 2

v generic 90s pop/alt rock. it was ok but the latter half lost me. stupid thing and fifty years after the fair were 2 notable tracks!

the album name of whatever is pretty fitting, cuz thats kind of how i feel about it. generic sounding 90s pop rock but overall its Fine i will hand it to her that i dont think ive ever heard a song abt wanting gilf dick before (mr harris), so thats uhh something i guess?

DIdn't really care for this too much

what are these lyrics bro

Aimee does have a really good voice, and I remember enjoying her songs from the movie "Magnolia." That said, this album just didn't hold my interest. Just simple, not very catchy soft-rock songs.

Not really my bag and kinda cant understand why its on here - maybe i need to listen to the lyrics closer

Decent just nothing here too noteworthy or grabbing me

I should've known

It feels like a 90s high school movie. Predictable and skippable.

I might as well have listened to white noise

The titles on point.

90s pop drive-in shopping mall mediocrity at its finest. One has to wonder how the album selection works to allow something like this to end up in the list. Nobody did ever really listen to this album, it's the stuff that was up on radio and you changed station after a while, hoping to find some interesting songs. But whatever: I interrupted a listen to Main Street by Roy Wood to try a couple of tracks of this Aimee's tasteless drivel. I promptly stopped that stuff and continued to appreciate the rest of Wood's masterpiece. By the way, I find it amazing that it's not on this list, go figure why.

It's for someone. I'm not that someone.

It was fine. 2.5. I didn't actively dislike it but it just wasn't exciting and sounded like so many other artists from this era.

Very boring

wanted to love this pretty badly - my parents are both big Mann fans, and i heard her songs all over growing up - but i think this particular record is pretty anonymous, and the Brion production is way too busy for songs this literary. I've Had It - spare, delicate, diaristic - is by far the best thing here. it's too bad this is her representation on the list, i think she's a wonderful songwriter and deserves to have her more sophisticated, better-written songs be more widely heard

First song sounds very mid-90s, grunge tinged pop. Getting a lot of 60s jangly influences, bit of sgt pepper horns, and a bit of country pop in her vocals. It's a very pleasant, catchy, and easy-to-listen-to album. Bit of acoustic coffee shop singer-songwriter too, she has a nice voice. Nice lyrics. Gets very samey halfway through. The initial interest wears off. Meh.

Pop, rock, alternative rock.

Shania twains mindre flinke kusine eller no? Under middels.

Hum... ok? Parece bom para curtir uma fossa

Not for me

Good for what it is- it’s just not my thing

Bland pop rock, or as she says herself: «Whatever». Her Magnolia soundtrack is better than this.

good album title

We're at two in a row for typical american commute. Nothing offensive occurs, save for the occasional clownesque elements ( there's a David Byrne connection here according to the book). In the moment it is fine, just fine. But I don't want just fine to justify a spot on the list.

This really isn't my cup of tea, so I don't really think this is an album that I needed to play. Nice enough. Inoffensive.

This album really reflects the sound of the early nineties alt-rock but it’s just not as catchy as some other notable groups nor is it her best album. Sadly a 2 for me.

reasonable. let's do it to it. the thing about these nineties/noughties albums is that #they love using the CD format to make these shits 50+ minutes. oh well. guess i'll make lunch. who the fuck processed the drums like the matrix (the canadian production duo for avril lavigne and/or liz phair). why. i rate "could've been anyone"/"say anything" though. stupid thing has a chorus. jon brion??????? this might be the least jon brion sounding jon brion project i've heard in my life. "jacob marley's chain" does get a shout at his usual trappings (one metaphor song ¯\_(ツ)_/¯). "mr harris" + "i know there's a word" + "i've had it" do them. standouts. album ending's a good bit. (related but unrelated) she's from richmond??? berklee???? right then. 1.8-3.2. overglorified kelly clarkson music. hell. overglorified shania. that's a pro shania/kelly statement. picks up in the second half (thank god). wikipedia says it's geffen's fault. i'll take her at her word. it'd be a 3+ without all the radio malarkey.

No es lo mío..

This was an album filled with a series of forgettable pop songs.

Nee, Danke.

Eh, this was an okay listen but totally forgettable if I'm honest

Ei napannut. 1,5/5.

Sheryll Crow, maar anders.

No fav song

It was okay but too old feeling for my liking

I didn’t know any songs on this. I really only know one Aimee Mann song and one ‘Til Tuesday song. I like her voice, it the songs were kind of boring. I liked 4th Of July the best.

It sounds like the music you would hear in the background of some shitty 90s to early 2000s teen tv drama.

Yeah this is ‘93 I’m not really getting anything out of this, it just feels generic— like “yup, that’s a band playing music with lyrics” I guess I feel “whatever” about this (heeheehoohoo)

A bit boring frankly. Doesn’t have the excitement of other early 90s singer songwriters and her voice isn’t as distinctive as her peers. A couple of good tracks in there, and I like Jon Brion’s contributions on anything.

Reminiscent of Sheryl Crow. Not for me though.

The songs on this album reminds me very much of 1990s rom com movies, I am almost certain some of her songs were used for such movies. I remember one song, You Could Make a Killing which was a soundtrack for Cruel Intentions in 1999 which I liked (this song is not on this album however). This album is musically very mediocre and samey. I should listen to her lyrics more carefully because it is praised very much, but at first listen I focused on the music and it's just not my cup of tea.

MoR soft pop rock

It's pretty good. Didn't blow me away or anything.

I think Aimee Mann is a good song writer, I just can’t latch onto the style here. The style sounds like if you asked AI to generate an adult alternative song with female vocals.

Hmmm, I didn't know what to expect here. One of the first couple of tracks reminded me of something else and it took another song or so to figure out that I was thinking of "is it like today" by world party, which interestingly was released the same year as this album. At some point in the next song or so I went out to pack the car. Erm, I came back in. I couldn't tell you much about the things I heard when I did though. Listening harder, some of these lyrics are quite clever. But the music is pretty generically nice and dull and the tunes aren't jumping out at me. Her voice is nice. The instruments are nice. The songs are nice. It's all therefore fairly forgettable. I'm at track 10 and I'm off to put more stuff in the car... I mean, it carried on and I continued to not really care. Then it ended.

This was ok, but mostly generic background music.

This album was ok. Nothing really stood out and made me love it.

I didn't finish this album. Four tracks in, I got a pop album that means nothing to me. There are worse things out there, sure, but this here doesn't need to be on this list.

I dunno. I wanted to like it. I didn’t like it.

It’s a bit boring 2.4

yep. whatever.

I really did not care for this when it began, but then it improved to my ears. When it's mid, it's forgettable 90s rock. When it is better, it has quite poetic lyrics with a sadness that is deeply relatable against quite basic but well-supportive rock tracks. The playing is clearly live, which I appreciate. Overall, not super moving but ok

Pretty inoffensive but never really got going for me. She was in the Big Lebowski though (and did the soundtrack for Magnolia) so that’s worth an extra star

90s girl pop. Not my cup of tea but not terrible.

Meh! Will need to try again another time.

Artiste inconnue. =>2/5

I think these melodies are horrific and I’m personally offended by the entire song of Mr. Harris

The book of cinder? Unlikely

Pretty boring. Might revisit as only gave it one listen through, but didn’t really grab me.

whatever by kate buchan

It's Lilith Faire 1994 and I'm going home early.

Not for me. Can’t understand why this album made this list.

This just is not for me.

Kinda boring and generic, there wasn't anything I enjoyed. Not particularly fond of her voice either.

Whatever, indeed.

Smart lyrics but found it boring

I get that the production is cool and Aimee Mann can write some catchy tunes, but this album just felt kinda meh and forgettable. It's well-made, for sure, but it's missing that special something, that real emotion or risk that other artists from the time had. Some tracks just sort of blend together, like coffee shop background music. It's decent, with some good songs here and there, but it didn't really do much for me. Compared to the raw energy of Ani DiFranco or Tori Amos or Fiona Apple, this felt a bit too safe and clean. It's a solid piece of 90s alt-pop, but it didn't stick around in my head.

How do you rate albums that you don’t hate but you know you’ll never listen to again? 2 seems fair…..whatever¯\(ツ)/¯

I thought the beginning of the album had some ok songs, but the end was definitely a slog. This just isn’t really my type of music, but for 90s soft rock it was fine.

It’s ok but don’t know why it’s on this list

Felt very much of its time

I enjoyed: “Say Anything” and a couple other tracks but this album was not particularly my vibe.

Can't say that this stuck out as anything amazing

Whatever

The country comes through strong

Not a bad record, I'm just not that enthralled by her stuff. Again, at the risk of sounding really mean, I'm gobsmacked at some of the mediocre stuff that has made this list.

This album grabs your attention early with a strong opening track, but it drops off after that. That being said, it's still a good album and is enjoyable, but as albums on this list go it is a little on the weaker side. I would be willing to check out more of Aimee Mann's work. Favorite track: "I Should've Known"

Album name says it all

It was only legal to name your album “whatever” between 1991 and 1996 so Aimee got lucky she hit the sweet spot. This sounds like a debut album, certainly something there but the songwriting isn’t quite good enough to hold my interest, I skipped forward through a lot of songs at about the 2:30 mark. I honestly have no idea if this is supposed to be her masterpiece or if she peaks on her second or third album, I hope it’s the latter.

Have you ever wanted to listen to an entire album of 90s network sitcom theme songs? Very bland music. Vocals, songwriting, instrumentation and production are all just very safe and meh. 2/5

Really wanted to like this, and suspect that if I'd listened at the time I'd have been a fan, but coming in in 2026, I've heard a lot of this done better by other people. Sadly felt too AOR with awful guitar solos.

She's over-bored, and self-assured

If I could give this negative stars I would

Good but nothing really memorable for me.

Decent enough

I enjoyed it at the time but really couldn’t remember much of it after. Maybe it needs another listen.

2/5 Didn’t find this album all too memorable or interesting.

Extremely 90s. This was not for me. But she's talented.

Well, I heard it, I didn't die, though there were moments in this one where I didn't care if I did. Maybe the most perfectly named album ever. Bo-ring. Just nothing really memorable here, and her voice does nothing for me. I don't usually get annoyed by lyrics that rhyme, but for some reason here it gets on my nerves.

eh, I really wanted to like this more but it was just kinda disappointing I liked could've been anyone but the other songs kind of just blurred together I like this style of music usually but this just wasnt the best example of it 2.7 stars 5.4/10

Totally fine but I’m perplexed by the acclaim.

It was ok, but forgettable. I can’t really think of much to say about it. Favorite song: Mr. Harris

This was quite dull. Some singer-songwriter albums are fantastic, but many fall into the traps of songs that sound the same and forgettable lyrics. "Stupid Thing" was the highlight, but everything else blended together. I've heard some things from Aimee Mann before that I enjoyed, but this album was not it.

Ugh. I think I was born 5 years too late to get any enjoyment out of this. Aimee Mann is fine but she’s really not for me. Never liked her. This whole album sounds like covers of Wings songs. Also I’ve never been sure if the piano player on Ally MacBeal was or wasn’t Aimee Man. Two stars.

The listening equivalent of the tatt in my mother-in-law’s house.

This is not really for me, but I feel like Aimee Mann is probably so cool.

90's pop rock. The opening track grabbed me a little, but I quickly became bored with this album. Pity as I really wanted to like this album . Good voice and overall good production but nothing worth remembering

Not for me.

Did I really need to hear this before I died? Maybe not. It's mediocre, standard pop (edging on pop rock) of its age. Incredibly samey. Listenable, but mostly forgettable.

no comments, meh

Just didn’t speak to me. Bit too mainstream and wasn’t keen on her boice

not really made for me Will I listen to again: 0%

This is fairly tepid, non-committal pop. I have no idea why this is in the list.

You know that once scene in cars where Mac is driving on the highway and the fun cars pull up and play music and its like slow jazz or something and Mac gets tired and goes "Sleepy tunes"? That is how I would describe this album. SO boring.

There's some talent there but overall the singer and the recordings are really unpolished and sound like it all needs much more work. The songs were a bit generic.

There is something about this is just not great that I can't quite put my finger on 2.5*

Best Song: Say Anything. I liked the falsetto in the chorus. Worst Song: I Know There's A Word. Excruciatingly slow and sleepy. Overall: In the history of albums that exist, this was certainly one of them. Nothing of note, either good or bad. I can already feel myself forgetting this.

She kinda lost me on the softer tracks, but a couple of the out and out rockers were cool. Favorite track: I Should've Known

This album is painfully early 90s girl power indie pop rock. Less of an "edge" than Fiona Apple or PJ Harvey, but almost indistinguishable from Cheryl Crow, Melissa Etheridge, or Natalie Imbruglia. So is it good? Well, it's not *my* cup of tea. There are some catchy songs, in an early 90s poppy sort of way. It veers dangerously close to country a few times with some shitty slide guitar, but overall, it doesn't make me angry. Yet another album that isn't bad, per se, but I cannot understand why it made it into this project. 2.5 stars.

The title says it all, really.

Say Anything and Jacob's Chain are decent sounding tracks, the rest is kind of generic. I guess there's a reason why I've never heard of Aimee Mann despite growing up in this time period and listening to a lot of music. 2/5

She's no Cheryl Crow, and I don't care too much for Cheryl Crow.

Not my favourite album. Sounded like very personal story telling, but it didn't resonate with me musically or lyrically. I enjoyed having it on in the background though.

Not amazing but a couple interesting moments (shout out unexpected organ). Lacks any true wow moments but I can see why PTA collabed with her for Magnolia. In 93 this may have been fresh but due to the sheer amount of late 90s early 2000’s singer/songwriter alt rock bloat that followed this album (and surpassed) I give it a 2.5/5

it sounded like the soundtrack of friends

Not terrible but pretty unremarkable, won't be listening to that again even if I didn't hate it.

Boooooooooring.

#744. Pretty forgettable. This is like an opening act for Lilith Fair. 2/5: meh

A country album.

Piano heavy slow alt-emo rock from 90s. Good but songs are a little meandering.

feels like it gets repetitive after 4th song

Didn’t really grab me tbh. High 2

It just happens sometimes, where a vocalist's style doesn’t click with a particular listener. There isn’t much Aimee Mann could have done to win me over. That aside though, the impact of pop rock has to come from the kinetic energy generated between the band and the sugary vocals, but nothing jumps out. I find the elaborate storytelling elements curious but not compelling. It’s all a bit tepid.

Pleasant enough for background listening, but not something I'd jump to play again. The songs aren't particularly distinct or memorable, very "chill hangout" type of music. Lower-range female vocals, acoustic vibes, somewhere between pop and grunge.

This what they mean by "Adult Contemporary" right?

Originally wrote something sassy, but after reading other reviews for the album on this site, decided there is enough negativity being thrown around. Ultimately, I found the music a bit too "safe" and the lyrics not particularly insightful, clever or moving. While I'm not going to listen to it again, this is a totally fine example of the 90s singer-songwriter sound.

Some of these other reviews are calling everyone out as misogynists and sexist. But as a white female who was a teen in the 90s and grew up in a wealthy family, I'm gonna call this shit out for what it truly is: Rich, white girl, 90s-teen-tv-show background music. It's AWFUL!! The cover was more promising than the first 10 seconds of this album. All black clothes, Doc Martens, "whatever".... I thought for sure I was in for some good Grunge or Alternative. NOPE! If you like the Friends theme song, you might love this album. Track 10: I Could Hurt You Now is the only redeemable song of the album. If you want GOOD 90s teen white girl music, please check out Mazzy Star, Jewel, The Cranberries, Natalie Imbruglia, etc.

It's just a very generic sound. There is nothing really here that got me excited, I have already forgotten about it.

We get this but no Sarah McLachlan. Bummer. 2/5

Whatever, Aimee

This isn't bad...it is just very dated. You can imagine hearing this playing over the speakers at Central Perk during an episode of 'Friends'. I've listened to other Aimee Mann music and this seems like a poor introduction to her music. I'd prefer some Til Tuesday stuff. 2/5

"Whatever" indeed....

No me gusta mucho Aimee Mann.

4/10 Favorite: Stupid Thing

Would listen to this again while cleaning or lifting.

Didn't really vibe with this. Not bad but probably wouldn't go back.

The track I've Had It was neat. The rest: not so much

The title describes It pretty well. Not horrible but bland af. Why its this here?. 73/100

Wait, what did I think of this album again? Oh yeah, forgettable.

2.5 stars. Meh pop/rock album. Like a low-budget version Alanis Morissette. Standout is "Jacob Marley's Chain" but real duds like "Stupid Thing" throughout.

This album was really, really dull. It might have been produced well, but god it was boring. It brought to mind a female version of Elvis Costello, dreadful lyrics, shallow music, annoying voice. Even the track length is a snooze-fest, with just about every song the same length. It grew really difficult to identify when one ended and a new one began. I'm going with two stars, but only just.
