It’s just a bit dull… it’s like the songs that play in a shop when they can’t afford the good stuff.

Props to Aimee, mann; she really captured the essence of her album with its title.

It's not that it's bad, but how is this part of the top 1001?! Completely forgettable mainstream young woman country music, just like hundreds of others just like her.

While the writing may be solid, her voice just doesn’t jive with me. I don’t find the music particularly exciting. By the time the final track hit the chorus I was singing along with “I’ve had it” This music had a time and place, but it will rest obscure amongst the moody coffee shop rock.

I anticipated subdued acoustic singer songwriter stuff (it's here) but there's more of a rock edge to these songs than I was expecting. Not bad, but probably nothing I will listen to again.

I knew in the first 10 seconds I was in for 52 minutes of doing everything I could to not keep hitting skip. It's not bad, it's just an hour of boring songs that blend together. The album title is very appropriate.

I was hoping to like this but I really didn't. I didn't think any of the songs were particularly special or memorable, though I liked the sound of them. Her rhymes were often really trite and guessable, and her vibrato is all over the place. That makes her pitchy to my ear and it becomes sorta cringy to listen to. Not for me unfortunately.

I'll just emphasize what other reviewer escreveu, ok? "Boring, forgettable. You really have to wonder how some of these albums make it onto this list."

good singing, but the soft alternative rock sound isn’t really doing much for me. Nothing specifically to criticize about, just not a salient sound to my ears.

I couldn’t be more indifferent to this if I tried. It made less impact on me than a leaf fluttering in a forest 50 miles away. And not that fond of her voice- I’m sure her songwriting is solid but as I make a W with my thumbs and forefingers I whine ‘WotEva’! It’s really a 2.5 but hey…

This is very 90s alt/pop and wouldn’t be out of place in an episode of Felicity or Dawson’s Creek, or accompanying the moody scene in a 90s teen romantic comedy, you know the one where the love interest realizes they messed up and may have lost a good thing. All that to say this is ok, but is dated and definitely a product of its time. I was a teenager in the 90s so I appreciate the nostalgic sound, but it just doesn’t hit the same notes as Nirvana, Bush or Alannis. No songs stood out and they all sort of sounded alike. 2

I want to be supportive of other woman. I read other people’s reviews and I guess she does this all herself? I hope she follows her dreams. It’s a bit pitchy at times and not the type of music I generally go for. That said: it’s a no from me dawg.

Was disappointed with this album. I like 'til tuesday and Aimee's voice but this is firmly in the 'meh' category. How it made this list is a head scratcher. Maybe it could be replaced by The Way We Move by Langhorne Slim and The Law.

More country-tinged soft rock, sounds a bit like Sheryl Crow? Very early-mid 90s. Not really sure why this is here. It certainly has decent musicality and stuff going on within the songs when you listen for it, I just don't like the songs much. Although I have to admit it does grow better as it goes along. Well. The middle portion anyway. Say Anything was ok. Mr Harris was pretty nice. In fact the Rufus Wainwright connection particularly makes sense in this one. The producer is also responsible for the scores for Punch Drunk Love and Eternal Sunshine of the etc Mins, which are both excellent, amongst many others. Diverting enough to avoid bottom marks but no more.

What do you know, the title perfectly encapsulates my feelings on the album!

The album is fine, pretty much what we'd expect of female vocal-led singer/songwriter in the early/mid 90s, it's all fairly middle of the road, along the lines of Sheryl Crow, Liz Phair, Alanis Morissette, et al.

Man, that's one of the most 90s albums I've ever heard. The production, the songwriting, the performances... all so painfully early 90s. The kid's toy xylophones, the oooeeeooo harmonies, the super chimey guitar chorus, the in-your-face vocal mix combined with the super-dry, extra-crispy, almost mechanical drums... it's all so over-the-top and locked into a very specific time. I will concede that Miss Mann is a talented songwriter. But I just don't like the way the songs were realized. It's just way too over-produced. I know that's just how it was done at the time but I don't like it and this is my review, so...

No lo escucharía

I'm surprised this is on the list, there is nothing here that is any different to thousands of other artists. Instantly forgettable, just background music.

Listened to this while playing ISS Vanguard solo. I lost the mission. This was an Aimee Mann album. I love her music...but this was nowhere near her best stuff in my opinion. Meh.

In de lijn met Meredith Brooks, Melissa Etheridge, Tracy Bonham, en noem ze allemaal maar op. Een typisch jaren 90 verschijnsel. En dat vooroordeel klopt. Het klinkt typisch jaren 90, huismerk Alanis Morissette, met iets minder pit. Er zit niet 1 vermeldenswaardig nummer bij, vandaar dat we ook geen hitje van haar kennen. Het eerste deel van het album worden de gitaren er nog wel eens in gegooid, dat gaat er wel makkelijk in. In het tweede gedeelte wordt het wat langzamere singer songwriter muziek, waarbij namen als Joni Mitchell en Rufus Wainwright bij me opkomen. En dat is in mijn geval geen compliment. Het stevende af op een typische, ietwat saaie 3. Door deel 2 zakt het naar een 2 helaas voor Aimee.

Every song sounds like the last one, with plaintive lyrics that warble on. And “Jacob Marley’s Chain” steals its main melody from Nik Kershaw’s “The Riddle” almost wholesale.

Why is this even included in the list? I got bored.

Albums like this are so difficult to rate. Like, with no context, this album is totally fine. It has some charming songs and it moves from track to track very satisfactorily. It's when you put this in the context of being one of the 1001 albums you MUST hear before you die. I find that really hard to believe. I can see some people being fans of this artist, but I don't really see anything innovative or significant about this album. I wish I could say any of these songs really stuck out to me. I don't really have a favorite. If I was rating this album independently of this list, I would rate it higher. Perhaps a 3/5.

Whatever is right. This album felt like it belonged on a Hallmark movie or some show like Felicity. It's 90's blueprint is showing.

This was not what I expected. I think Mann’s lyrics are clever and the overall presentation of this album is chaotic and fun. Nothing really blew me away, though.

Whatever is the first solo album by American singer-songwriter Aimee Mann. I thought this was a decent album, but nothing really grabbed my attention saying "this is amazing". A bit underwhelming.

I get it, this is predominantly a British and American rock list and lots of albums from these two countries will appear in it. But come on! There are so many albums out there and we had to listen to something like this? No list is complete and everyone will have their opinion, but really? This was the same from the beginning to the end, no spikes or lows. Horrible album.

Despite Aimee’s punkish looks with Doc Martin boots this is basically vanilla chick pop. She does have a lovely voice though.

Esté disco lo descubrí a toro pasado. Empecé con "Magnolia" y "Bachelor nº2" pero es una artista más completa e interesante de lo que parece y de esa imagen apegada al grunge que creo que fue más pasajera de lo que parece desde fuera. Qué buena voz y que bien cantaba desde su primer disco. El disco al final me ha sabido a poco.

I've known who Aimee Mann is since my brother brought home Magnolia on VHS in the early 2000s (side note: it took up two tapes...why didn't he just buy the DVD?). I'd put her in the same spot as I put Tom Waits: great lyrics and storytelling, but grating voice. I'm also not a huge fan of singer-songwriter stuff, and this felt like it dragged on and on. I wish I liked Aimee Mann but I just can't get there. More of a 2.5.

Calling this an average album would be a stretch. I didn't like the music, style or Aimee's vocal. Just a boring record, on to the next one.

As apathetic as the title suggests, not much more than standard angsty 90s rock with some slower emotionally-oriented albums thrown in. Mann has some great vocals here and there, but the whole LP feels very unmotivated and lacking in purpose.

The solo debut of the vocalist behind Til Tuesday and their hit "Voices Carry." She has a jangly power pop sound and vocals with country and folk influence that match with 90s contemporaries Alanis Morissette, Tori Amos, and Fiona Apple. She has some great songs in other albums, and I like the production and songwriting here, featuring some cool instrumentation like in "Say Anything." But it was too long with too many filler tracks, and hardly anything stood out to me at all. Favorites: I Should've Known, Could've Been Anyone, Say Anything

I didn't like this album , it sounded very generic and all songs sounded very similar. I can see the emotional side to the album but I just couldn't see it. Some of the guitar solos were good and the vocals were nice but it sounded very copy and paste

Appreciate the attempt to balance all the dad rock with a little mom rock. But the only thing I liked about this album was the cover. Very relatable.

WTF? I started listening to the first song, I Should've Known, which was her lead single and I barely made it through. Sounds like radio pop drivel - intentionally pandering to the masses through glossy guitar strumming and oohs, ahhs, and bop-bops from backup singers. Sounds like the kind of stuff that Liz Phair got panned for when she toned down her edge in the 2000's - so why are we glorifying Aimee Mann's stuff? That's a hard first impression to come back from. 4th of July at song three was redeeming. Jacob Marley's Chain and Mr. Harris also caught my attention in a good way. The rest of the album was...whatever. Or worse...same drivel as the opener. Not deserving of this list.

This is appropriately named. Aimee's voice is okay at best - she's got a Carpenters kinda vibe. But, I never liked the Carpenters either. I can definitely hear how (maybe) subsequent artists picked up on a few of the unique "vibes" and ran with them later in the 90s, but those artists would fall mostly into the one-hit wonder category - so I'm not sure how impressive that is. Anyway, not for me.

Didn't make a big impression

The best part of this album is the opening of Could’ve Been Anyone. Unfortunately, it only lasted about 10 seconds. Objectively, I think Ms. Mann has a good voice, but I just don’t like it. I think there are too many intonation changes.

Nyt on vahvat ysärivibat! Artisti oli entuudestaan hämärästi nimeltä tuttu, mutta yhtään biisiä en olisi osannut mainita. Kovasti mennään kuitenkin samantyyppisissä äänimaailmoissa kuin esim. Shania Twain ja moni muu aikakauden artisti. Biisit ovat todella peruspoprockia ilman suurempia koukkuja. Epäilemättä sopiva konsepti amerikkalaiseen musiikkimakuun. Periaatteessa ei häiritsevää kuunneltavaa, mutta yleinen tasapaksuus ja kiinnostavien elementtien puute vaivaa levyä. 2,5 joka ei saa nyt armoa.

I’m a big fan of Aimee Man’s voice—listen to Weyes Blood if you’re looking fit a modern version. This album is way over produced. It’s as if a studio fat cat got a hard on for her and gave her way too much money to produce this album, not only that but it is indulgent and long. This would be a better album if it was pared down—the three songs that are work better IMO. The 4th sings starts with a dope sample then the 90s guitar just tramples all over it. The song, “Stupid Thing” is simply bad. If you want hood Aimee Man Listen to the Magnolia soundtrack, those tracks are magic. Aimee Man at her best. C-

Ugh. This was a chore to listen to. Other than her significant contribution to the Magnolia soundtrack I’ve never been much impressed by Ms Mann. Her voice challenges your idea of “in key” and never quite sits down in the mix. It always feels like a tourist I wandering through the music looking for a way home. And her lyrics feel the same to me. A spoiled rich girl playing voyeur to someone else’s shitty life and calling the experience her own.

This is exactly the kind of music, that AI is going to take over and I won't be sad..

Perfectly competent MOR rock that left absolutely zero impression on me. I couldn't tell you anything about this album. Someone reviewed it as the soundtrack to the Gilmore Girls if there were no hooks. Can't disagree.

From the way it started, I could tell immediately it was from the 90s. Continuing the first few songs, it sounded like it was female-fronted pop rock from before Jagged Little Pill. After that, it really transitioned hard into folk and folk rock. I did not enjoy this album.

Yeah just album just sort of went by. Not really a lot of remarkable stuff on here. It is an album which is also a product of its time. The singing style of the singer also didn't really appeal to me. 1/5

This had a 2-star quality to it but I honestly got nothing out of it, wasn't impressed by any part of it, and couldn't wait for it to be over. That qualifies it for the 1-star board. Edit 1: These lyrics are so bad.

Had to turn it off because I couldn't stay awake. Incredibly boring. I noticed a lot of reviews pointing out the quality production and song writing. However, it's like a dish made of quality ingredients, but they just boiled the shit and added no seasoning or spice.

The Good: Excellent catchphrase! The Bad: That it refers to the artist attitude while recording this album. The Ugly: Wha’evah… I had a bumper sticker that read Whatever when this album came out… I loved that bumper sticker… I did not love this album. As a matter of fact, while listening to this all I could think about was what the fuck am I listening to, and why is this fucking album on the list? 2026 has not started off with a bang for me, that’s for sure, as, as this is the third album where I am struggling to wonder if it is worth more than 1*… Why is this on the list? Nothing on it made it special… worse, I can’t seem to find it on any top list mentioned. If you head to udiscover.com and check out their top 71 albums for 1993 then you will find 71 albums I’d rather be listening to than this shit… Guess that’s the nail in the coffin for Aimee… 1*

This sucked. It’s like Mistki or Weyes Blood if they were bad and couldn’t keep a tune. Boring songs and even more boring instrumentals. I had trouble finishing this album and had to skip a few songs because I just couldn’t take listening to the same thing over and over again. The music wasn’t unlistenable I’m sure people like this but man is it unimpressive.

Corny Pop with very pitchy vocals

I don’t want this to come across as a lazy review, I genuinely listened to the full album 3 different times. And I just took nothing away from it. Like it made no impact, I don’t remember the songs, I don’t remember the lyrics, I don’t even remember what she sounds like. This album is just so powerfully underwhelming. I don’t know what else to say other than I don’t think this album is for me.

I feel like someone told this lady that she has a nice voice at a bar once and she decided to make an entire album. The melody she uses is borderline childish. Her tone is ok at best and the quiet backing instrumentals to highlight her voice are laughable. What a boring entry to this list. After looking at the wiki no wonder I disliked it, Elivs Costello was mentioned. Ok her voice has gotten worse as the album has gone on, it’s like she is making up the lyrics on the spot, oh it’s bad. 2/10

The bad and boring kind of 90s pop

2/10 This sounds like a distillation of 90s pop-rock with all of the edges sanded off. I mean, it’s ok if you’re out shopping for dungarees at Top Shop, but as a ‘must hear’ album, I just don’t really get it. Her voice isn’t great, both from a control, or from a tonal point of view. It sounds like a mediocre open mic singer-songwriter that’s been given a decent budget to hire a band of pros, but made sure that she kept the reins on so they don’t do anything too interesting. With that in mind, I’ve no real idea why so many of these songs are over 4 minutes long. Aimee Mann’s fans are probably now all 50 year old women with ‘Live, Laugh, Love’ etched into bits of driftwood adorning the walls of at least 50% of the rooms in the house they kept in the divorce. It’s pretty well produced, although her vocal is a bit high in the mix and perhaps a little dry in places, which doesn’t help her. The band seems very competent too. It’s not offensively bad or anything, it’s just uninspired and dull. And way too long. I Should’ve Known - What a strange intro. Sounds like they forgot to trim off the bit where the band were pissing about before they started recording. 30 seconds in and the 90s appear. It’s got that 90s toe tapping rhythm to it, but it is bland. It’s also too long. Fifty Years After The Fair - This is twee and her slightly nasally voice that she doesn’t have great control over just helps it to sit in ‘mediocre pub band’ territory. I think she probably loves REM. 4th of July - I think this is supposed to be an anthemic ballad, but it doesn’t have a discernible hook. Meandering. Could’ve Been Anyone - The first 10 seconds sounded like something different might be happening. Then the song started and it was just the same stuff again. Real middle of the afternoon small stage at a festival stuff. Put Me On Top - I think she’s trying to do some more interesting stuff here with a few of the transitions, but this is the most blah 90’s chorus makes sure we don’t forget that this isn’t actually interesting. Stupid Thing - Boring thing. Say Anything - This actually sounds like the band are trying to do something a bit more exciting in the first half, but then it just gets worse and worse. The ‘I’ve heard everything’ bits are so so bad. Jacob Marley’s Chain - Sombre song referencing Victorian literature - check. Plodding and repetitive. Mr Harris - I think there’s a half decent song in here actually, the execution just isn’t right. Vocal isn’t strong enough and is also too high in the mix. I Could Hurt You Now - Strange verses that sound like it’s trying to be ‘dark’. Chorus is more bland pop-rock. I Know There’s A Word - That word you’re looking for? Boring. I’ve Had it - There are places where she just doesn’t hit the notes. This is another really boring one. Way Back When - Certainly not the worst verse on the album. A bit of whimsy that’s not too twee, and then the chorus is just rubbish. Forget what I said. The outro is way too twee. Piss off Aimee.

I have an odd aversion to most female singers. Most. Dunno why. They all sound the same to me or extremely auto tuned. It either bores me to death or sounds like nails on a chalkboard. I don’t know why. This sounded pretty generic to me. Like a lady singing country music. Kinda generic.

Well that tailed-off steeply after a mildly interesting opening track. Became all a bit boring, like a Poundland Sheryl Crow.

Whatever sums this up. It's too smooth and well produced for my palette. I'm sure Americans lapped it up, but I can't see why it's on this list, asit hasn't improved my life in any way at all.

This must have come out during the heydays of Jewel, Merideth Brooks and Alanis. If it did, it’s weak in comparison. It’s just poppy bubblegum pop gum pop….. I don’t like anything about this album really. It won’t get a one star rating because its not horrible pieces together like more deserving 1 star albums. It’s just lacks any sort of emotion from me.

Beside the fact that the music was lousy, that woman cannot sing. Why is this album on the list?

There's very little that I like about this album. Her voice is nasally. The instrumentation is sometimes interesting, but then it gets really basic and boring. The lyrics are ??? (odd, weird, confusing). This feels like a bad album by a new artist that should have been faded. The only song that isn't ruined is I've Had It, but it also kind of fills it's potential, based on what was on the rest of the album. This didn't need to be on the list.
