Reviews (page 7 of 7)

Music for distilled water enjoyers.

Terrible voice

Yawn.... I don't hate it but Christ it's boring.

90's rock. Nicely played and sung, but without any interesting ideas or hooks it's nothing special. And at nearly 53 minutes it overstays its welcome. 2/5

The early pop-country is all too unwelcome and lengthy. There's some above-average material, too, but it's quite buried.

Bargain bin Sheryl Crow. Early 90s alt-country-AOR....why?

Generic 90s pop rock.

The album is unnoteworthy. No need to listen. Not really a 2, but I will round up.

Not for me

Meh nothing special about this album and it's kind of boring and bland. Not for me.

Ditto. Not exceptionally awful but super boring. I can't think of anything on here that stood out at all. I have no idea why this is here. Why is it here?To think of the artists and albums that got snubbed. Take yer 2 and git out

It was good for what it aims to be, but I just was not into much of it A couple songs I liked I think

You said it, sister. Whatever.

I moderately enjoyed this. Bit samey.

Very plain, and empty. It's also pretty generic for its time. And I do not like this girl's voice that much. Overall, this album was not easy to listen to.

Was ok. If a song came on from the album I wouldn't recognize it or think anything of it.

Ehhh. JUst water down pop.. Does have few good lyrics but damn it's musically it's just boring.

Na "put me on top" vokali zvuče ko kad sam ja strastveno pjevala na mikrofonu s 8 godina

whatever…

Should've known it'd be mediocre when there were multiple comparisons to Elvis Costello on the Wikipedia page.

Not for me I think.

This seems so firmly tied to the time in which it was created.

I’m usually a big Aimee Mann fan. But didn't really get into this album. Maybe it was just because it was 1993

Very on the nose 90s rock sound. I can appreciate the story telling and the musicianship but the whole nostalgic guitar sounds for me is very grating

she has a nice voice, she has other compositions i've enjoyed, but not this one. she had a great cameo on portlandia once too!

Boring, very boring

Eh. Again, not really my thing. She's a fine songwriter, I'm just generally not into the soft 90s rock scene.

Beetje saai

boringggggggg

Another easy listen. Not bad, just also not special. I will probably have forgotten this album before tomorrow. Gonna rate it a 2 as I'm bored and it's definitely less interesting than most of the things I've rated 3+.

Never heard of it before. Kind of boring.

Pleasant but not pleasant enough to want to hear it again.

Another very fucking generous 2 from yours truly. What a load of shite this album is. Definitely worse out there though.

I really thought I was going to love this, but, honestly, I didn't. None of these songs stand out to me at all. I'm shocked. Maybe on another day, I'll like it more. 2/5

Didn't make a big impression

The best part of this album is the opening of Could’ve Been Anyone. Unfortunately, it only lasted about 10 seconds. Objectively, I think Ms. Mann has a good voice, but I just don’t like it. I think there are too many intonation changes.

mid singer songwriter 2.5

Not something I’d listen to again. Not particularly bad, but nothing that stands out.

Its fine I guess?

Ehhhh.. I don't hate it I guess..

I’m a big fan of Aimee Man’s voice—listen to Weyes Blood if you’re looking fit a modern version. This album is way over produced. It’s as if a studio fat cat got a hard on for her and gave her way too much money to produce this album, not only that but it is indulgent and long. This would be a better album if it was pared down—the three songs that are work better IMO. The 4th sings starts with a dope sample then the 90s guitar just tramples all over it. The song, “Stupid Thing” is simply bad. If you want hood Aimee Man Listen to the Magnolia soundtrack, those tracks are magic. Aimee Man at her best. C-

I wanted to like this, but it just fell so incredibly flat for me. Too produced, too... everything.

2/5 pretty unrememberable tracks

Not a fan at all

Yeah. Whatever!!

It’s like country without the character? Or maybe that 90s cigarette mom rock but without any of the soul, feeling, or intrigue. It was as tender and flavorful as the boiled chicken dish at a cheap banquet.

It’s not that I didn’t like it but it just wasn’t for me. Background movie music

Slop. Shit I’d hear at a reasonable volume at Harpoon Larry’s while scarfing a crab cake topped cheeseburger. So fucking bland it’s painful. 0 edge 0 bangers Didn’t tap a single toe Didn’t even nod Had to listen to sixpence none the richer after this to remind myself female led 90’s pop rock bands are valid. I’m gonna be sick bro

Good album.

Dawsons Creek can keep this one, its not for me.....

Perfectly competent MOR rock that left absolutely zero impression on me. I couldn't tell you anything about this album. Someone reviewed it as the soundtrack to the Gilmore Girls if there were no hooks. Can't disagree.

From the way it started, I could tell immediately it was from the 90s. Continuing the first few songs, it sounded like it was female-fronted pop rock from before Jagged Little Pill. After that, it really transitioned hard into folk and folk rock. I did not enjoy this album.

INPUT = {"artist": "Aimee Mann", "album": "Whatever"} LINEUP = {"men": 0, "women": 1} FEATURED_ARTISTS = {"men": 0, "women": 0} TOTAL_MEN = 0 TOTAL_WOMEN = 1 WOMEN_PERCENTAGE = 100 OUTPUT = "Minimum score awarded. 1/5"

Yeah just album just sort of went by. Not really a lot of remarkable stuff on here. It is an album which is also a product of its time. The singing style of the singer also didn't really appeal to me. 1/5

This had a 2-star quality to it but I honestly got nothing out of it, wasn't impressed by any part of it, and couldn't wait for it to be over. That qualifies it for the 1-star board. Edit 1: These lyrics are so bad.

Had to turn it off because I couldn't stay awake. Incredibly boring. I noticed a lot of reviews pointing out the quality production and song writing. However, it's like a dish made of quality ingredients, but they just boiled the shit and added no seasoning or spice.

The title of the album is how I feel about it.

👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎

I don’t understand why this is an album I should hear before I die

Yeah not for me.

This album has opening act on the B stage at Lilith Fair energy. I should've known...

Not really enjoying Aimee's vocals. There are some lovely instrumental arrangements but honestly, Aimee's voice drowns a lot of them out. But ya know, Whatever.

Ikke for meg…

None of her most popular songs on an album by an artist I’ve never heard of. With good reason

The Good: Excellent catchphrase! The Bad: That it refers to the artist attitude while recording this album. The Ugly: Wha’evah… I had a bumper sticker that read Whatever when this album came out… I loved that bumper sticker… I did not love this album. As a matter of fact, while listening to this all I could think about was what the fuck am I listening to, and why is this fucking album on the list? 2026 has not started off with a bang for me, that’s for sure, as, as this is the third album where I am struggling to wonder if it is worth more than 1*… Why is this on the list? Nothing on it made it special… worse, I can’t seem to find it on any top list mentioned. If you head to udiscover.com and check out their top 71 albums for 1993 then you will find 71 albums I’d rather be listening to than this shit… Guess that’s the nail in the coffin for Aimee… 1*

This sucked. It’s like Mistki or Weyes Blood if they were bad and couldn’t keep a tune. Boring songs and even more boring instrumentals. I had trouble finishing this album and had to skip a few songs because I just couldn’t take listening to the same thing over and over again. The music wasn’t unlistenable I’m sure people like this but man is it unimpressive.

Belanglos

the lord is testing me

Did not finish. Aimee obviously has a nice voice and the album is fiiiiiiiine... but not for me. I was about 5 songs in and I realized nothing had stuck out to me at all. Sometimes you just have to give a skip.

Music I’d expect from a nine toed woman that likes lingonberry pancakes

Do I give this two stars because it sounds like the soundtrack to a high school show, or one star because according to Wikipedia Elvis Costello is a fan? One star it is

Really unremarkable. I could have happily died without listening to it...

I thought this was bland and inoffensive, there was little to keep me interested. There’s nothing wrong with it, but it doesn’t excite me in any meaningful way.

Ikke noe for meg, egentlig.

Bland.

Banal lyrics sung by flat whiney vocals to wandering aimless melodies - this whole album sounded like a toddler singing nonsense to a tune they are making up as they go along.

Gear: Dunu SA6 Artwork: 👱‍♀️🪦🤷🏼‍♀️ Production: 🧼🧻🤷🏼‍♀️ Music: 🍭🫧🤷🏼‍♀️ Rating: 🤷🏼‍♀️/5

Got to the 5th song and realized there's nothing here. It makes me angry to listen to with how bland it is. Absolutely should not be on this list. 2.5/10 (1.25/5)

Sounds like the kknd of band that was invited to the Saturday night entertainment shows that ran on TV when I was a kid. Neat, tidy and doesn’t hurt anyone - and I hate that in music

This sucks.

I am scrambling to come up with a reason for this to be on the list. It's not even British! It's still boring though! And basic! I can't forget bland!

Whatever you do, get ready to be bored. She sings boring is the only way I can describe her. Almost female version of a dylan without all the other talent.

Corny Pop with very pitchy vocals

I don’t want this to come across as a lazy review, I genuinely listened to the full album 3 different times. And I just took nothing away from it. Like it made no impact, I don’t remember the songs, I don’t remember the lyrics, I don’t even remember what she sounds like. This album is just so powerfully underwhelming. I don’t know what else to say other than I don’t think this album is for me.

I feel like someone told this lady that she has a nice voice at a bar once and she decided to make an entire album. The melody she uses is borderline childish. Her tone is ok at best and the quiet backing instrumentals to highlight her voice are laughable. What a boring entry to this list. After looking at the wiki no wonder I disliked it, Elivs Costello was mentioned. Ok her voice has gotten worse as the album has gone on, it’s like she is making up the lyrics on the spot, oh it’s bad. 2/10

I don’t understand how this album even made it on this list. Mediocre.

The bad and boring kind of 90s pop

2/10 This sounds like a distillation of 90s pop-rock with all of the edges sanded off. I mean, it’s ok if you’re out shopping for dungarees at Top Shop, but as a ‘must hear’ album, I just don’t really get it. Her voice isn’t great, both from a control, or from a tonal point of view. It sounds like a mediocre open mic singer-songwriter that’s been given a decent budget to hire a band of pros, but made sure that she kept the reins on so they don’t do anything too interesting. With that in mind, I’ve no real idea why so many of these songs are over 4 minutes long. Aimee Mann’s fans are probably now all 50 year old women with ‘Live, Laugh, Love’ etched into bits of driftwood adorning the walls of at least 50% of the rooms in the house they kept in the divorce. It’s pretty well produced, although her vocal is a bit high in the mix and perhaps a little dry in places, which doesn’t help her. The band seems very competent too. It’s not offensively bad or anything, it’s just uninspired and dull. And way too long. I Should’ve Known - What a strange intro. Sounds like they forgot to trim off the bit where the band were pissing about before they started recording. 30 seconds in and the 90s appear. It’s got that 90s toe tapping rhythm to it, but it is bland. It’s also too long. Fifty Years After The Fair - This is twee and her slightly nasally voice that she doesn’t have great control over just helps it to sit in ‘mediocre pub band’ territory. I think she probably loves REM. 4th of July - I think this is supposed to be an anthemic ballad, but it doesn’t have a discernible hook. Meandering. Could’ve Been Anyone - The first 10 seconds sounded like something different might be happening. Then the song started and it was just the same stuff again. Real middle of the afternoon small stage at a festival stuff. Put Me On Top - I think she’s trying to do some more interesting stuff here with a few of the transitions, but this is the most blah 90’s chorus makes sure we don’t forget that this isn’t actually interesting. Stupid Thing - Boring thing. Say Anything - This actually sounds like the band are trying to do something a bit more exciting in the first half, but then it just gets worse and worse. The ‘I’ve heard everything’ bits are so so bad. Jacob Marley’s Chain - Sombre song referencing Victorian literature - check. Plodding and repetitive. Mr Harris - I think there’s a half decent song in here actually, the execution just isn’t right. Vocal isn’t strong enough and is also too high in the mix. I Could Hurt You Now - Strange verses that sound like it’s trying to be ‘dark’. Chorus is more bland pop-rock. I Know There’s A Word - That word you’re looking for? Boring. I’ve Had it - There are places where she just doesn’t hit the notes. This is another really boring one. Way Back When - Certainly not the worst verse on the album. A bit of whimsy that’s not too twee, and then the chorus is just rubbish. Forget what I said. The outro is way too twee. Piss off Aimee.

Bland cookie cutter pop. Makes me wanna change the station.

👎🏻

1+ Stars (3/15)

Pop country. Rom-com soundtrack

Argh! More mindless American pap! There is more to music than just playing notes. I can see the boardroom execs thinking this is so bland it will offend no-one, and be loved by middle aged bunnies every where as its so "safe". Someone said it was beatlesesque!? Dung Beatles.

I have an odd aversion to most female singers. Most. Dunno why. They all sound the same to me or extremely auto tuned. It either bores me to death or sounds like nails on a chalkboard. I don’t know why. This sounded pretty generic to me. Like a lady singing country music. Kinda generic.

Well that tailed-off steeply after a mildly interesting opening track. Became all a bit boring, like a Poundland Sheryl Crow.

Whatever sums this up. It's too smooth and well produced for my palette. I'm sure Americans lapped it up, but I can't see why it's on this list, asit hasn't improved my life in any way at all.

did not like this very much.

This album sounds like she recorded it lying right where the cover picture was taken. A bunch of mediocre songs with her singing over them. Don’t get me wrong, she has a great voice, just a boring album 1001 album worthy: No - 45/80

This must have come out during the heydays of Jewel, Merideth Brooks and Alanis. If it did, it’s weak in comparison. It’s just poppy bubblegum pop gum pop….. I don’t like anything about this album really. It won’t get a one star rating because its not horrible pieces together like more deserving 1 star albums. It’s just lacks any sort of emotion from me.

Bleh. Not for me.

Did not like it

1. knouun - 1 2. fair - 1 3. july - 1 4. anyone - 1.5 5. put - 0 6. thing - 1.5 7. zay - 1 8. jacob - 1 9. harriz - 1.5 10. hurt - 1.5 11. uuord - 1.5 12. it - 1.5 13. uuhen - 1

I can't stand this album anymore. Shame.

Awfully generic.

Dumb lyrics. No thanks.

I absolutely fucking hated this.

So boring

Beside the fact that the music was lousy, that woman cannot sing. Why is this album on the list?

There's very little that I like about this album. Her voice is nasally. The instrumentation is sometimes interesting, but then it gets really basic and boring. The lyrics are ??? (odd, weird, confusing). This feels like a bad album by a new artist that should have been faded. The only song that isn't ruined is I've Had It, but it also kind of fills it's potential, based on what was on the rest of the album. This didn't need to be on the list. Favorite Song(s): I've Had It

Aged like milk and drivel...meridith brookes she ain't.

Hated the entirety of this

30/100 This was very 90s and parts of it are actually enjoyable. But the singing is mediocre and the production is very monotone. Also the outro ain't it chief.

This felt like it would never end... in a bad way. Not a fan.

See title.

Yeah, title checks out. After listening to this album for seven decades and growing a grey beard, I checked Spotify and was horrified to see that I was still in the middle of the second track. Incredibly generic snorefest. One of the most pointless inclusions on the list, and that's saying a lot. Didn't sell well, no standout singles, no interesting story behind it, no new ideas .. genuinely what is even the point. 1/5. Waste of my time.

What a nothing album. It's not awful, but there is nothing here that I'd consider worth coming back to. About 100 other artists do this exact schtick but better.

The soundtrack to every bad hallmark film

I can safely say, from the bottom of my heart, that was the worst album I've heard on this list thus far. Her weak, nasally voice, the uncomfortable lyrics, the sophomoric musical talent, all pulled into almost an hour long album. What an absolute waste of time. I refuse to listen to Aimee Mann albums again. 0/5 -> 1/5.

There's just something about Aimee Mann that repels me. I can't quite explain it. But it encompasses everything — her vocal melodies, the tone of her voice, the compositions themselves. Marianne remarked not long ago that she can't understand why I don't relate to Mann's music as she seems to check all the boxes of music I like, but not so. A one-star is, of course, as harsh as it gets, but I couldn't even get through the second song before I bailed. It was actively aggravating me. Sorry.

Whatever indeed. Utter ballads.

The album title said it all.

Drivel

There is nothing memorable about this album.

não me pegou em nada

The most generic music you'll ever listen to in your life.

De openingssong, ‘I should have known’ was zo verschrikkelijk nog niet. Alles was even saai en tam. Aimee Mann kan lekker de tyfus krijgen! Rating: 2/10

4,5/10 Highlights: I Should've Known

Overly tied to the 90s

Zzźzzzzzzzz, hey what!

Not my bag, strays beyond merely bearable into positively annoying.

The most forgettable member of the Lilith Tour era.

Not a classic. Sorry

30/100

Blaaaaaa. Ärsyttävä vähän huono lauluääni

Absolutely horrendous

What even is this

Amerikaanse volkrock🤢

Zijkmuziek eerste klas

Pop country is a genre that rarely feels like a musical success. And this album falls right into line. I couldn’t make it through the whole album. Cheesy and boring.

Downright horrible. It's out of tune, the songs are bland, the lyrics are mellow. I'd have guessed this is peak poprock, but Aimee Mann was a decade earlier.

Have to say this felt a little insulting after the likes of Aretha Franklin and Nick Cave. Quite awful though. I did not like it at all. Beige beige beige

Not my thing

Every once in a while I come across an album on here where it feels like it's just a personal favourite of the author. This is some very boring, middle of the road, white bread music. Something nonabrasive my mother would have listened to.

Aimee Mann- Whatever I’ve known about Aimee Mann for awhile but never dabbled with her music. Let’s see what’s happening here 1. I dig the harmonic vocals over the hook. The instrumental is fine. She’s got a good voice too 2. Ok I get the appeal of this but it ain’t for me. There’s nothing wrong with it but it’s not my vibe. Great voice tho 3. This could ride if I was in the mood for it. I am not in the mood today lol 4. Boring 5. Lord I’m ready for this to be over. 6. This album putting me to sleep 😴🥱😴🥱 7. Ok this instrumental has some interesting things happening. There’s still not a lot of teeth to this album tho 8. Another yawner 9. God I am not into this AT ALL. I’m about to DNF this. 10. This album is hurting me so yes, you can hurt me now. The bridge is good 11. The word is bored Aimee. This album is boring 12. I’ve had it as well. Another miss for me 13. Mehhhhhhhhhhh what’s with the circus ending. And the train recorder whistle. I’ll never listen to this again Not for me. 2/10 A appropriate title for sure

This one isn't for me.

I honestly hated this.

I like her a lot but I wasn't much of a fan of this album.

I Should’ve Known 1-1.5/5

What a load of shite Singing is poor, music seems to be without any sort of hook, just wanted it to finish

Boooooooring

Magnolia elokuva soundtrack... 1001 elokuva.. tämä naikkonen.... Aimee Ann..

Not good

I'd rather listen to crust punk.

Listened to a few songs in the background and don't feel like I need to listen further.

elvis costello likes this which makes sense. give me marshall crenshaw instead. "i know theres a word" we get it you cant write songs god this was pathetic the ff7 synth on jacob marleys chain made me want to fuck my eyeholes with pinecones

First Certainly sounds like it's from the 90s. Very boring and bland pop rock with some country influences. The start of the first track before we go into the dirtbag guitar makes one hope for something interesting to happen. no cigar.

whatever

I knew I'd hate this album when I saw how she spelled her first name. My granddad would have liked this album but he also liked the Corrs and being a racist so that doesn't mean very much. I found it a very standard album, from a very normal musician. Put it in the bin with the others.

Meh. Whatever.

Dear oh dear that's two duff albums on the trot now. This one sounds like even in 1993 it was 15 years too late. Generic girl vocalist and band. It could be Chrissie Hind's less talented younger sister. Dull as ditchwater. Next!

Does anyone else feel like the 90s are over-represented on this thing?

Ai.. Deze krijgt de eer voor de 1e 1-ster.

I actually hate it

Not my style.

Nope, no thank you, I'll pass, please move along

They should have shelved this in the recording studio. shit sandwich

Nope, nope and nope.

Didn't enjoy it at all, a slog to finish

Couldn't even make it through the whole album, thought it was shite.

Whatever indeed

This sounds like Alanis Morissette, but without personnality. Whatever.

Alanis Morisette Wish Version. In this case : Canadian can do it, but better !

I’m on track 5 of 12 and I can barely go one. I will finish, because I refuse to let Aimee Mann win this. My god, what was it about the nineties and white, insipid voices that can’t hold a note/sing in tune, and let’s not even start on the lyrics. How on god’s earth did this album get on this list.

This is dull as ditchwater. Straight up did not enjoy.

Meh. this is just early 90s soundtrack filler.

On se fait chier là dis donc !

I fail to see much that’s unique about this album.

The lyrics may well be clever, but I can't get over the music and the vocals to appreciate them. Albums like this make me wonder what it is that I can't hear, because I really can't understand why this would be on the list.

not for me at all sorry

One of the biggest questions: why women with beautiful voices waste their talent for singing songs that are total crap, to say the least.

Nahhh not for me

una reverenda mierda.

I did not enjoy this album at all. I was 18 when it was released and exactly in that black-clad, Doc Martens demographic, gleefully listening to all the female rock acts I could get. But this is... You know, it's a favourite with older male rock critics. That's where Whatever exists. It belongs on "Best Album" lists but it doesn't seem to have a place outside that bubble. Maybe fans of the album get a nice nostalgic feeling of the early 90s? For me, it's bland rock that doesn't go anywhere.

Mom rock, grocery store music
