Reviews (page 6 of 7)

Not great. Songs don’t stand out as much as other pre-indie singer/songwriters of that time. Was a pretty boring listen

Ok 2/5

No bottom end, my subwoofer is confused

It's not bad, but not really all that interesting either. Kind of just goes along. 2.5/5 Probably won't listen again

++: Put Me on Top, Say Anything, Mr. Harris, I Could Hurt You Now +: I Should've Known, 4th of July, Way Back When, Nothing +-: Fifty Years After the Fair, Could've Been Anyone, Jacob Marley's Chain, I Know There's a Word, I've Had It -: Stupid Thing 5,0/10

Probably speaks to someone, but not to me.

Meh. Fine but boring.

This certainly wasn't difficult or offensive to listen to, but it all seemed pretty generic to me. All of the songs on the album sound like the filler songs on an album with three banger singles. I actually don't think I'm going to go further than track 6

Rating: 4/10 Nah.

Whatever. An apt name for a boring album. Answered the question of “what if PJ Harvey had no charisma and droned a bit more”. Not necessarily a question I needed an answer to. It was fine for parts but dragged on and couldn’t get into it.

Sadly not really worth many words. I could easily list numerous similar better artists from 90s that I would have considered average let alone the best stuff from era. Not good enough! Fine but why bother.

Inoffensive porridge that I feel like I have heard a thousand times before. Like porridge, I started off finding it dull but perfectly pleasant but by the end of the 50 minute bowl I was finding it hard to stomach. There is absolutely nothing special about this. The music is bland and her voice isn't particularly great. Generic American singer/songwriter album from the nineties. Another "why is this on this list?" moment from me.

Okay, but i can't recommend it. Was kind of boring.

Whatever

I guess a lot of folks either weren’t around or don’t recognize this is what things sounded like in the 90s. Production and songwriting are the focus of this album and those are both done well. I’m not saying it’s great, but it’s good for what it is - basic.

Boring.

Over Produced, Songs just kind of sound banal. Not bad but nothing that I found exciting. I can't even say I could dance to any of these songs. Unremarkable. Banal. Boring. Where's the passion? This is not rock or roll. This is just (indie/alt) pop, but pop first/foremost. Good songs: I've had it (still boring though) Bad songs: Put me on top Okay Songs: Stupid Thing, Say Anything, Jacob Marley's Chain, Mr. Harris, I could hurt you now, I know there's a word, way back when

While it wasn’t completely unbearable to listen to, it was boring. I don’t get the hype.

Not really my type.

What a boring, generic album. Very skipable! a quite liked the cover.

Not good, not terrible. This album is well titled as "whatever"

Not enjoyable for me

I can't tell if this is a step up or down from 'Voices Carry'

I generally like Aimee Mann, but this was a little folksy for me.

Growing up in the 90s I listened to a lot of music and enjoyed much of it. Although Aimee Mann was not on my rotation I feel like I have heard her a thousand times before with artists like Gin Blossoms, Sheryl Crow, and other staples of 90s alternative pop/rock. The song writing is not bad and has some really decent hooks. There always seems to be a light dusting of country influence during this time period in the bridge or the short guitar solo. Unfortunately her vocals are mixed too far forward and often feel like a recording of a well sung karaoke track. As I progressed deeper in the album the songs blend together with no real differentiation between. I have gotten bored.

Super mediocre y aburrido 4.9/10—>2/5

It's just a not very interesting album and way too long

Фув наконец-то нормальный альбом, хотя говно, но пахнет вкуснее

Very rooted in the 90s.

Aimee has a strong voice. These are nice enough songs that my Mom would probably love but the lyrical content isn’t something I care about and the music itself isn’t exciting enough so it just feels dull for me like the soundtrack for a Christian television show or some shit. 2 stars

Someone else said this sounds like the album version of Gilmore Girls and that’s pretty apt. I’m not a fan but I understand why someone would like this. It’s pretty well-crafted ‘90s pop rock, clever and hooky in places but like the Doc Martens the artist is wearing on the cover art, it’s a little too extra for me.

Better than I remember

Любимая музыка какой-нибудь Кейси Масгрейв. Я с трудом вижу сходство с героями инди-фолка, как утверждает спотифай. Песни, пожалуй, ок. Лучшая песня - Stupid Thing.

Nothing caught my ear and made think yeah this is really good! All a bit bland.

Definitely could have died without listening to this

This didn't really add anything when you have PJ Harvey on the list.

"Whatever" the lyrics are, the music was too dull to enjoy.

Meh. Nothing good but completely inoffensive.

This sounds too formulaic to me.

Neither of any interest or any annoyance. The album came, played and left...next!

This sounds like every other white solo female artist from the 90s. Bland and boring. I think you have to have no balls to enjoy this.

Mid Vocals and production are just so boring

Cover - kinda grungy looking lady w grungy text Inside - fairly bland pop music Just didn't grab me

Tio pop

Crazy how an album called "Whatever" was mediocre beyond belief!

Nice voice, music ain't bad either but for me the glue doesn't stick...It justifies why I've never heard of her before!

What a rollercoaster of feelings! First, don't judge an album by the cover, but this looks like prefabricated pop-rock from my childhood. Then I started listening to it, and I actually liked it! It is more folkish rock than I thought, with good vocals and superb production! It actually reminded me somehow of some of my favourite 80s songs, like Moonlight Shadow, but with less guitar and a more modern approach. But in the end, this is a bit boring for me. The songs are not engaging, and I feel this is a subpar Alanis. But I moderately liked it anyway. Probably will come back to it later. Adding to the "Songs for driving" list.

I like Aimee Mann! I don't like this Aimee Mann.

2.0 - Weak

I really like a lot of these songs but the production is just too much and takes away from the organic feel that would make them stand out. At times, the production takes the lyrics from being heartfelt and raw to sounding cheesy and superficial. It's a bummer because I think if this were taken by a different producer it would have been significantly better. Apparently this was a sentiment shared by Aimee because she has stated in her later work she tried to shy away from the 90s clean production style. Would love to hear this remastered in a way that is more true to an 'artist recording in their bedroom' style. Great voice and obviously exceptional songwriter. My dislike of the production might just be a me problem.

Yeah "whatever" is a good choice for a name it's just not good

Is she the gal that was in a Buffy episode? I give her points the that

Hate hate hate. Ok maybe that’s a bit strong. It’s not especially offensive, but also of no interest to me whatsoever

Snoozefest

I don’t hate this music, but I also don’t see anything special about it. I struggle to understand why it’s in this list.

whatever. this is 90s sitcom background music.

As much as I like some later Aimee Mann work — the Magnolia soundtrack, particularly — this didn't do much of anything for me. Very whatever.

1001 albums to take with you into the sensory deprivation tank

Things I didn't know about Aimee Man. She sang "Voices Carry". she features on a Rush Song. I also hadn't heard this album before, and it didn't make me a fan. It was okay, but I was definitely glad when it ended.

This started off really strong and I thought I was in for a hidden treat. While it isn't a terrible album, I just didn't find it particularly good either. For a first album (and for a first listen to this particular artist), there's potential for good songs probably throughout her discography.

A very 'whatever' experience.

Good but not great. Not bad. Not essential listening before you die. Definitely not one of the most important 90s albums to hear.

There’s a certain type of album that is really important for a minute and then stops. This screams ‘1993 acoustic music’. And it hasn’t dated well. It’s good. But it’s barely relevant anymore. She does better stuff later (which you’d hope for in any artist) So another non essential album. 2stars.

So so booring

A bit boring honestl.y

Pretty uninspiring guitar pop. Nothing exceptional.

Aimee Man is one of those artists whose name I've heard for years and years but never (knowingly) heard any of her music. We all have those, right? I wasn't intentionally ignoring her, I just never had a reason to seek her out. She's never mentioned much in terms of "great" artists. I couldn't even have told you what her genre was. Not sure I can now after listening, either. Pop? Pop rock? Soft rock? I don't know. This was a very alright radio-safe pop rock album, is what I've come to. Catchy in all the right places, a nice clean sound that won't offend the ears, and a singer-songwriter with a voice so clear and listenable that while it might sometimes be a little annoying, you'll never feel the urge to shut it off completely because there's something pleasant about it. I didn't remember much of anything about this album after the fact. It's been over a week since listening and I couldn't have hummed you any melodies. I couldn't tell you what any of the lyrics were, or what the songs were about. Except "Jacob Marley's Chain." Because that one is so drastically different than the rest of the album. You might say - "Can you remember any songs from an album you heard once a week later?" Well I could with Tracy Chapman's album, soooooo...... This is the most fine and most inoffensive album I could've imagined. And I really do not understand why it's on this list. Two stars. It wasn't bad. It was just bland. Standout Track: I Should've Known

Fine 90s fare.

I Should’ve Known by the name that this album would be Whatever.

would probably go hard if I were a teenage girl in the 90s but as it is, pretty boring

Struggling to see how this album ended up on this list as it seemed remarkably unremarkable. Nothing particularly stood out and it was pretty bland. Plenty of other similar bland records out there so just not sure what raised this about the rest.

I had assumed that the 90s would be my favourite decade on this list as most albums I own come from this great time in music. This kind of album proves why it is not my favourite decade so far. Never heard of her and will instantly forget her too. Very bland pop which should not make this list. On the plus side if she was starting her career now the industry would demand that she was paraded around in her underwear and sing songs dissing her ex boyfriends and fellow artists.

About as uninspiring middle of the road pop/indie/rock as you can get. Not awful as such, but it seemed to take forever to get to the end.

I have no idea why this is popular. well produced is the best I can say

Yeah a new one on me, looked at the date (1993) and wondered how I had not heard of this artist but then had a listen and can understand why, 90's pop rock was not my favourite in the 90's and that hasn't changed, not my thing, I find it to be very boring, really don't like this album much ⭐⭐

4.5/10. This album has a track called 'Could've been Anyone' and I agree, this album could've been written by anyone. It just felt super generic, super middle of the road and none of the songwriting really stood out to or motivated me. It was fine to listen to but just quite uninspiring which started to rub off on me, a couple of the songs were a little better than this description but overall in the context of the list I feel this album is pretty underwhelming.

Its ok!

Whatever

p709. 1993. 2 stars. Sheryl Crow, but without the tunes. Well done, but not exceptional in any way. Bonus point for "Stupid Thing". Why is this album on the list?

Good writing, boring execution

This really doesn’t do much for me at all. It doesn’t fill me with rage like the 1s on my list, but it also feels completely forgettable…

Medium Langweilig

This was ok not really my thing

I swear when they made this list, for every album after 1990 they just threw darts in a record store

Not for me. Mediocre. Loved the magnolia soundtrack though

Good for a first solo album. Consistent vibe and energy. Didn't grab me and felt a bit long but I could see this being right on the money for some people. Decently well done, probably makes sense to have something just like this on the list but I doubt I'd relisten.

She was fun in 'Til Tuesday. Too bad she ended that for this.

Not bad, nothing too exciting either imo.

It sounded like she wasn't really trying vocally, and there wasn't anything exciting instrumentally.

Nothing really wrong with it, but it doesn't stand out

You can hear why there is mutual appreciation with Elvis Costello. Supposedly the lyrics are great but the production was too off puttingly bland to make me want to listen again yesterday.

Just not my bag really

For me, it's music to do stuff by. Pleasant, but didn't really get my attention. There may have been other factors at work though, and I think I'll give it another try sometime.

The only Aimee Mann song anyone needed to hear was "Give Up", which is not on this album. The songs that are on here are mediocre and forgettable. Maybe it's essential to her fans, but it didn't win me over at all.

Like Fiona Apple, but far less interesting. Formulaic singer songwriting.

it's not as the title suggests as Whatever. album is very basic, if you want to call it that, as there isn't many lyrics that don't go past the surface level, but that doesn't make it a bad thing. more of a radio friendly level of music, something that plays in the background when you're shopping at K-Mart.

I love magnolia (1999)

Biased against this album from the jump just based on the overprocessed sounding drums preceding I Should've Known. Otherwise, the song is actually just fine. Would actually be quite good if the production weren't flat as a piece of paper. Fifty Years After the Fair sounds like an Elvis Costello song in formation -- and even the backing vocals have his twang. Most of this is kind of disposable pop bullshit, but Jacob Marley's Chain > Mr. Harris is solid one-two. The later sort of plays as a Christmas song, but it feels modern in tone. Ya know I honestly didn't hate this. At times, it reminded me of Gwen Stefani (circa No Doubt) and at others it felt like Elvis Costello. That said, in the spirit of this list, I really don't think it should be here... Stands around a 6 objectively, but scoring as a 2 because I don't think I'll come back.

This is kinda some forgettable 90s pop bullshit. Meh not a fan.

See the album title.

I kind of like Put Me on Top

I bought this album as a punt cheap at a record store sale. Had never heard of Aimee Mann but the cover attracted me for some reason. Probably thought she was a bit like Alanis Morissette and that rebellious female rock stuff that was around at the time. It turned out to be money wasted as although Aimee might have thought she was like the Alanis set, she was a lot lot more MOR. Got rid of this CD and never expected to hear the album again so was surprised that it turned up on this list. Listening through the album again confirms that my initial view of it stands firm and there is nothing here to interest me. 2/5 12/11/24

Not for me

The comparisons to Elvis Costello are fleeting. The first few songs are alright, kind of reminded me of Ryan Adams more than Costello. Mann’s singing is pretty painful at points, kind of like Joni Mitchell, but without the earnest magic. It all comes to a head at Jacob Marley’s Chain, a really awful song. Mr. Harris and I Could Hurt You Now are somewhat redeeming, but this album mostly falls flat.

Surely this can't be in the top 1,001 albums everyone must hear before they do. Maybe the top 100,001. She doesn't even sound sure of herself when singing. She sounds like me when I'm embarrassed about my singing voice so I mumble most lines out. Wouldn't even want to hear this in an elevator or a reception lobby which is where it probably gets the only airtime nowadays.

Not my cup of tea my G

What a perfect name for a 90s album, Whatever. Unfortunately that pretty much sums up my thoughts about the album as well, Whatever. It’s very dad rock 5.0/10

I want to like this album, but I won't return to it. I recognize she's a talented songwriter and musician, but this just do anything for me. She was a great performer, very personable and enjoyable, when I saw her live and I love the segment with her on Portlandia, but I just can't get into this one. Rating reflects my likelihood of relistening.

if you had a girlfriend in the 90's you undoubtedly have heard this more than enough for one lifetime. Myself included.

Whatever is the first solo album by Aimee Mann, originally released in 1993. Never heard of this artist prior to listening. This is straight-up 90s indie-pop. Lots of jangly guitars and catchy hooks. Maybe too many catchy hooks. A lot of the songs were very similar in style. Like they were all constructed in the same way. The songwriting is pretty ok. Nothing stood out to me but this is pretty inoffensive overall. Just your average 90s pop.

Aimee Mann is an artist I’ve never got into much. Literally only knew one song called “Wise Up” I heard in tv show “Community”. Well here’s my chance to hear a whole Album by her Stand Out Tracks I Should’ve Known Fifty Years after the fair Mr. Harris This album is fine almost has a Joni Mitchell vibe but with a 90s sound. It also has that CD era album length. It’s pretty good but beside a few songs can’t see me coming back to it. it has merit but isn’t anything above a high 2 2.5/5

Your aunt who thinks she can sing.

Ok for some background music, but definitely not top 1001 material. I’m not sure I agree with most of this list, actually.

Let's be honest, there are a lot of unpleasant reviews for this, but it's really not great is it? Still better than Bob Dylan though.

Nothing wrong with this, but there were probably 1001 better albums just in 1993.

90’er poprock, nice nok, men heller ikke noget st være helt oppe og køre over

Ammattimuusikko. Levyn kuuntelu ei ollut nautinnotonta.

90-е типикал поп рок ура круто

Whatever. Did not finish.

I don’t get it.

Whatever mann

I don't know, it's just kinda boring

Aptly named. Probably the most forgettable album in the entire list. This is my third time listening to it and I still can't remember 95% of what this album sounds like. Couple of great tracks near the end save this from a 1, and it's not outright bad anyways. Just outright boring and forgettable

Soooo boring. 2/5

Maybe this was ahead of its time, which is why it's on here? Idk, sounds very bland to me. Call hold music. 2* because I reserve 1* for albums I abhor.

All filler, no killer.

Not great

Straight-forward, sarcasm-laced, heartfelt mid-90s pop. Not Counting Crows, Live, or Toad the Wet Sprocket? This instead? I’ll give it a bonus star for Aimee Mann’s pristine songwriting skills, but….well, whatever.

I don't like her voice or the vibe of the album, not for me. Made me feel like I was stuck in a 90s rom-com montage. 1.5

i've only ever had people i don't like recommend me aimee mann and so have avoided her work completely until today. it was perfectly fine and inoffensive, 2.5

If you liked Meredith Brooks or similar back in the 90s, then I would highly recommend this album as this is a strong competitor. Unfortunately, I dislike this genre so I have to give it a lower rating than it probably deserves. Fave Track: I Should've Known Rating: 2

Really nothing too say, it's not bad but very far from deserving it's place in this list

It was fine, but didn't do anything for me.

I've only heard of Aimee Mann because of Connor Ratliff's Dead Eyes podcast. If I remember correctly, he interviewed her because 1) he really likes her music 2) she had an anecdote about coping with rejection that fit really well into the overall theme of the podcast. I think Connor may have played a few of her songs during the closing of a few episodes, but I don't remember much about those songs. I listened to a lot of adult contemporary music when I was a kid, but I don't remember ever hearing Aimee Mann's music back then. I tend to enjoy "Lilith Fair" type artists, so I'm interested to see what this album is like. Overall, this album was okay. The songwriting, arrangements, and production were nice, and Aimee Mann's vocals were pretty good too. This album was a fairly enjoyable listen, but it lacks a lot of the punch that its contemporaries have. While the vocals are well done, there's really a lack of emotion in them, which is a shame since a lot of the songwriting is pretty clever. I also felt like the album was far too long, and I really lost interest in it the deeper into it that I got. This album is pleasant enough to listen to, but the lack of emotion makes it kind of boring. With things like Jagged Little Pill or Exile In Guyville out there, I can't think of any reason that I'd listen to this album again. This one just doesn't live up to the sum of its parts.

maybe this was interesting or revolutionary or whatever when it came out but to my born-in-2001 ears it just feels... meh. uninteresting composition and mediocre lyrics with plunky first-choice rhymes that do nothing for me. whatever indeed.

Fairly forgettable songs, not bad but not something that I see myself returning to.

Day200 - aimee mann is a name i’ve heard for thirty years or more. i know the critics love her but it isn’t what i would listen to by choice

Too long and quite twee. Nothing outstanding here

Nja, det är inte dåligt men albumet saknar starka låtar.

This was not very interesting. Somewhere between Shania Twain and Alanis Morissette sprinkled with some PJ Harvey. The Harvey sprinkles are the best.

90s B-movie background music

It’s just a bit dull… it’s like the songs that play in a shop when they can’t afford the good stuff.

Props to Aimee, mann; she really captured the essence of her album with its title.

Most generic 90s pop-rock ever

It's not that it's bad, but how is this part of the top 1001?! Completely forgettable mainstream young woman country music, just like hundreds of others just like her.

Not impressed with this.

very Songwriter-y, very Professional Musician-y I don't much enjoy being able to hear the pencil scribble on the page or the questioning 'did I pass the audition?' look. music: hated. (⌐■_■)

Liked a few of the songs, but really suffers from over-smoothed 90s production.

Ben Folds does Lilith Fair

meh whatever...

While the writing may be solid, her voice just doesn’t jive with me. I don’t find the music particularly exciting. By the time the final track hit the chorus I was singing along with “I’ve had it” This music had a time and place, but it will rest obscure amongst the moody coffee shop rock.

Meh. I like Aimee Manns voice a lot but this was a little too pop for me. I prefer her folksie stuff

I anticipated subdued acoustic singer songwriter stuff (it's here) but there's more of a rock edge to these songs than I was expecting. Not bad, but probably nothing I will listen to again.

I knew in the first 10 seconds I was in for 52 minutes of doing everything I could to not keep hitting skip. It's not bad, it's just an hour of boring songs that blend together. The album title is very appropriate.

feels like a coffee shop singer who has all their friends enthusiastically cheering while you're just trying to have a conversation 1.7

kind of struggling to understand why this is on the list. maybe they wanted a bland album represented too?

It was okay, nice background music

Forgettable, could barely finish the album

Minivan Mom Music™️ for your elementary school Art Teacher who also works part-time as a barista at the place with the Global Village Coffeehouse wallpaper and smells slightly like weed, but, like, bad weed, like the kind grown by the Super Senior who isn’t attentive enough to have a green thumb but who will eventually become the CEO of a multi-million dollar dispensary chain that charges you $40 for a bag of five 10mg gummies that you take to delete the Sunday Scaries because you’re in your 30s now and for some reason the thought of spreadsheets trigger an anxiety attack. Oh, right, Aimee Mann, ummmmmm……🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

I was hoping to like this but I really didn't. I didn't think any of the songs were particularly special or memorable, though I liked the sound of them. Her rhymes were often really trite and guessable, and her vibrato is all over the place. That makes her pitchy to my ear and it becomes sorta cringy to listen to. Not for me unfortunately.

Pretty mid

Very boring

good singing, but the soft alternative rock sound isn’t really doing much for me. Nothing specifically to criticize about, just not a salient sound to my ears.

I couldn’t be more indifferent to this if I tried. It made less impact on me than a leaf fluttering in a forest 50 miles away. And not that fond of her voice- I’m sure her songwriting is solid but as I make a W with my thumbs and forefingers I whine ‘WotEva’! It’s really a 2.5 but hey…

This is very 90s alt/pop and wouldn’t be out of place in an episode of Felicity or Dawson’s Creek, or accompanying the moody scene in a 90s teen romantic comedy, you know the one where the love interest realizes they messed up and may have lost a good thing. All that to say this is ok, but is dated and definitely a product of its time. I was a teenager in the 90s so I appreciate the nostalgic sound, but it just doesn’t hit the same notes as Nirvana, Bush or Alannis. No songs stood out and they all sort of sounded alike. 2

This was very mid.

I want to be supportive of other woman. I read other people’s reviews and I guess she does this all herself? I hope she follows her dreams. It’s a bit pitchy at times and not the type of music I generally go for. That said: it’s a no from me dawg.

Was disappointed with this album. I like 'til tuesday and Aimee's voice but this is firmly in the 'meh' category. How it made this list is a head scratcher. Maybe it could be replaced by The Way We Move by Langhorne Slim and The Law.

More country-tinged soft rock, sounds a bit like Sheryl Crow? Very early-mid 90s. Not really sure why this is here. It certainly has decent musicality and stuff going on within the songs when you listen for it, I just don't like the songs much. Although I have to admit it does grow better as it goes along. Well. The middle portion anyway. Say Anything was ok. Mr Harris was pretty nice. In fact the Rufus Wainwright connection particularly makes sense in this one. The producer is also responsible for the scores for Punch Drunk Love and Eternal Sunshine of the etc Mins, which are both excellent, amongst many others. Diverting enough to avoid bottom marks but no more.

What do you know, the title perfectly encapsulates my feelings on the album!

This was...ok, nothing more/

Pop/country americano. Lembra um pouco Alanis pelos vocais. Bem anos 90. Quase música de rodeio. Nada de demais. Médio.

A pretty solid pop-rock album with that is able to send you back to that particular style of the mid-nineties singer/songwriter. Nothing mindblowing, but it was a good time to jam to

Mellow music

This is some pretty basic early 90s pop stuff. Some strong chamber sounding elements, definitely not for me.

whatever

Pretending to be the Pretenders, much? Not on my watch.

not my thing

Very middling singer songwriter stuff.

The album is fine, pretty much what we'd expect of female vocal-led singer/songwriter in the early/mid 90s, it's all fairly middle of the road, along the lines of Sheryl Crow, Liz Phair, Alanis Morissette, et al.

Man, that's one of the most 90s albums I've ever heard. The production, the songwriting, the performances... all so painfully early 90s. The kid's toy xylophones, the oooeeeooo harmonies, the super chimey guitar chorus, the in-your-face vocal mix combined with the super-dry, extra-crispy, almost mechanical drums... it's all so over-the-top and locked into a very specific time. I will concede that Miss Mann is a talented songwriter. But I just don't like the way the songs were realized. It's just way too over-produced. I know that's just how it was done at the time but I don't like it and this is my review, so...

No lo escucharía

I'm surprised this is on the list, there is nothing here that is any different to thousands of other artists. Instantly forgettable, just background music.

Listened to this while playing ISS Vanguard solo. I lost the mission. This was an Aimee Mann album. I love her music...but this was nowhere near her best stuff in my opinion. Meh.

Not my thing

Some nice melodies and riffs but overall a very mid pop album.

Quite uninspired. Did not pay enough attention to be able to tell if the lyrics were good or not.

Not my style. Wasn’t very catchy or have any songs that kept my interest

No strong feelings against it, just can't work out why it's on the list

I've been freezing my ass off all day. Warning: I didn't give this album much time. Every song sounded the same to me!

Ehhhh, nah. I had it on as background music and it was fine. If I were paying close attention, I probably would have turned it off.

Good for background noise by nothing really stood out.

I liked her work on the Magnolia soundtrack, but this album was not my thing.

A couple of Aimee Mann tracks at a time I can really get behind. A whole album was far too much of a helping for me. I don't think this record is nearly dynamic enough for its length. Her idiosyncrasies still shine through however. Two and a half. Fave track: I Know There's a Word Fave track

Not much to write home about tbh. A very 90s voice, quite bland.

She isn't a bad singer, but also not a special voice.

This album overstays it's welcome before the end of track 3. I think I would get more entertainment from a mason jar full of rusty nails. Could've Been Anyone and Jacob Marley's Chain were really the only ones I liked.

It’s catchy and interesting but it starts to drag pretty fast. It’s too long as most early 90’s albums are

I didn’t have to hear this. Bad length. Bad songs.

whatever idc

Slow personal songs that tell interesting stories. Musically simple.

I found this to be a bit dull, repetitive and uninspiring. Maybe it was Aimee’s voice. She may be a wonderful songwriter and I may have missed out on that but the sound just didn’t do it for me. S

Every song sounds like the last one, with plaintive lyrics that warble on. And “Jacob Marley’s Chain” steals its main melody from Nik Kershaw’s “The Riddle” almost wholesale.

Not bad, but also not memorable. "Whatever..." ;)

Meh, mostly harmless just nothing special.

There was nothing wrong with this. Basic boring guitar pop. Seems insincere. 3/10 doesn't belong here

First song got my attention, rest of the album is very mediocre 90s pop rock with a country twang, not one for me.

The mistress of the minor key! She must be an influence to Phoebe Bridgers

absolutely nothing interesting in the boring uniform sound here, and the production is so head ache inducing and buzzy, chords and melodies feel lost, never sticking, no nuances. but it's ok enough for the background i guess

Ei iskeny

Not bad per se but boring. It sounds extremely generic 90s girl countryrock. Will probably not listen to again.

Eh, didn't finish it. I found the music kind of boring and offputting for some reason, outside a couple songs. I'm sure the lyrics are good, but did not do it for me.

Whatever

vnk nee

Why is this even included in the list? I got bored.

Albums like this are so difficult to rate. Like, with no context, this album is totally fine. It has some charming songs and it moves from track to track very satisfactorily. It's when you put this in the context of being one of the 1001 albums you MUST hear before you die. I find that really hard to believe. I can see some people being fans of this artist, but I don't really see anything innovative or significant about this album. I wish I could say any of these songs really stuck out to me. I don't really have a favorite. If I was rating this album independently of this list, I would rate it higher. Perhaps a 3/5.

Whatever is right. This album felt like it belonged on a Hallmark movie or some show like Felicity. It's 90's blueprint is showing.

This was not what I expected. I think Mann’s lyrics are clever and the overall presentation of this album is chaotic and fun. Nothing really blew me away, though.

This is great on paper. Great technical abilities, but ultimately boring and unforgettable.

It was just another country pop that was saved from the 1-star rating for 1 or 2 songs that are enjoyable.

Pretty middle of the road throughout. It's not really "bad", but it didn't elicit anything from me, either.

Like how the dinosaur evolved to birds, this is the ancestor of boy genius.

Whatever is the first solo album by American singer-songwriter Aimee Mann. This pop rock album received positive reviews from critics, with many complimenting Mann's wordplay and melody of her lyrics. The standout tracks are "I Should've Known, 4th of July, & Mr. Harris". I thought this was a decent album, but nothing really grabbed my attention saying "this is amazing". I do agree with critics that Aimee Mann has great lyrics on this album, and the music compliments them too. Fans of pop music should enjoy this album.

A bit underwhelming.

I get it, this is predominantly a British and American rock list and lots of albums from these two countries will appear in it. But come on! There are so many albums out there and we had to listen to something like this? No list is complete and everyone will have their opinion, but really? This was the same from the beginning to the end, no spikes or lows. Horrible album.

Not really my kind of album, nothing really wrong with it just not for me

Boring 90s solo indie girl stuff

Despite Aimee’s punkish looks with Doc Martin boots this is basically vanilla chick pop. She does have a lovely voice though.

Completely bland. Competent. But still bland.

vise mi se svideo magnolia album

She sounded so similar to someone but I just couldn’t pin point it… It was alright- just boring honestly. I was done after a couple songs.

...see album title

Sounds like the sort of bland music you get in some american dramas, or in Poundland.

Nothing offensively bad on here but forgot about the entire album the second I finished it

I didn't like this

I've known who Aimee Mann is since my brother brought home Magnolia on VHS in the early 2000s (side note: it took up two tapes...why didn't he just buy the DVD?). I'd put her in the same spot as I put Tom Waits: great lyrics and storytelling, but grating voice. I'm also not a huge fan of singer-songwriter stuff, and this felt like it dragged on and on. I wish I liked Aimee Mann but I just can't get there. More of a 2.5.

Calling this an average album would be a stretch. I didn't like the music, style or Aimee's vocal. Just a boring record, on to the next one.

This sounds like the kind of music the women in Friends would listen to

As apathetic as the title suggests, not much more than standard angsty 90s rock with some slower emotionally-oriented albums thrown in. Mann has some great vocals here and there, but the whole LP feels very unmotivated and lacking in purpose.

It's just whatever

Whatever. Low effort, middle of the road quasi-pop country.

Du petit folk ben plate 3/10

Nowhere does it get bad, but it's such a bland 90's pop-rock album, done so much better by legions of others in this genre, that I really don't know why this was an album I needed to listen to before I die. I can't think of any part of this that sets it apart, on equal footing or even above the rest.

pretty average 90's

90’s alt-country-rock schlock

Not for me. I tried hard to listen and review but lost focus each time.

It's fine but not very compelling. Surprised I've never heard of her.

Kunde varit en etta men nån låt drog upp det

Um uneventful is the best way I can describe this for me

Some things are best left in the 90s.

I didn't really enjoy the album but it gets points for reminding me to rewatch Magnolia

Between a 2 and a 3, but ultimately it just drags a bit too much (both individual songs as well as the album as a whole).

I probably missed something but this seemed like pleasant pop but nothing remarkable.

The solo debut of the vocalist behind Til Tuesday and their hit "Voices Carry." She has a jangly power pop sound and vocals with country and folk influence that match with 90s contemporaries Alanis Morissette, Tori Amos, and Fiona Apple. She has some great songs in other albums, and I like the production and songwriting here, featuring some cool instrumentation like in "Say Anything." But it was too long with too many filler tracks, and hardly anything stood out to me at all. Favorites: I Should've Known, Could've Been Anyone, Say Anything

90's chick rock, not for me

Aptly titled.

Whatever.

Whatever

Nothing jumps out to me here. If you told me it was Alanis Morissette I would believe you

I didn't like this album , it sounded very generic and all songs sounded very similar. I can see the emotional side to the album but I just couldn't see it. Some of the guitar solos were good and the vocals were nice but it sounded very copy and paste

Appreciate the attempt to balance all the dad rock with a little mom rock. But the only thing I liked about this album was the cover. Very relatable.

WTF? I started listening to the first song, I Should've Known, which was her lead single and I barely made it through. Sounds like radio pop drivel - intentionally pandering to the masses through glossy guitar strumming and oohs, ahhs, and bop-bops from backup singers. Sounds like the kind of stuff that Liz Phair got panned for when she toned down her edge in the 2000's - so why are we glorifying Aimee Mann's stuff? That's a hard first impression to come back from. 4th of July at song three was redeeming. Jacob Marley's Chain and Mr. Harris also caught my attention in a good way. The rest of the album was...whatever. Or worse...same drivel as the opener. Not deserving of this list.

Mediocre pop rock. There seems to be a lot of albums like this on the list that could be replaced with more varied and interesting choices.

All blended into one song

I've heard this album before...wasn't impressed. Seemed very average at best. We'll see how it goes this time.... After my second listening day of this album: Still not impressed. Fairly weak and unimpressive. None of the songs stand out to me. Some may like it, but it doesn't do anything for me. 2.5/5

Mediocre at best. 2/5

Fairly dull indie pop. Needed a bit more oompf.

Ugh not feeling this one. A bit too folksy

This is appropriately named. Aimee's voice is okay at best - she's got a Carpenters kinda vibe. But, I never liked the Carpenters either. I can definitely hear how (maybe) subsequent artists picked up on a few of the unique "vibes" and ran with them later in the 90s, but those artists would fall mostly into the one-hit wonder category - so I'm not sure how impressive that is. Anyway, not for me.

Lots of Aimee Mann sounding like Aimee Mann. Not an album I'd listen to again. Does capture some of that early 90's sound, but overall 2 stars.

Ok album, but not sure that it belongs in this list.

Fairly boring country-esque pop-rock

Good tunes, can feel her story telling

Pleasant but unremarkable, a few songs t9 enjoy but it kinda disappeared most if the time.

Dull, just felt low effort and completely forgettable

Eh. Not my cup of tea.
