Reviews (page 12 of 12)

I’m afraid this very quickly became background. I was listening to it while working and it was easy to ignore. Didn’t finish it.

Fella can toot that horn.

It was ok

it's too chaotic, I don't linke it much

It’s just piano music what you would think of in a 60s speak easy kind of place. It’s easy listening just not something I would return for, however it’s better than RAP.

I liked more of the backing music than the main trumpet parts; those were kind of annoying at times. Probably why I don't care for jazz that much. Not bad, just not really my thing I guess.

Just jazz

I don't jazz enough to know if this is "good", it was rather uninteresting to me

- Not for me - Still looking for an instrumental jazz album that I can actually enjoy

Background music

It was ok. Not my thing really, but some nice rhythms.

If I ever decide to go ahead with that remake of The Merv Griffin Show that I’ve dreamed about for years, waking horrified and sweat-soaked every time, I now know the music to play us into and out of commercial breaks. Hail Cthulhu.

A few enjoyable moments, but nothing special.

I don't mind jazz but usually prefer vocals and the trumpet in jazz a bit too screechy for my ear drums

After three jazz albums in a row I'm feeling a little jazzed out

Pleasant enough jazz. I can’t find a deep connection to it, but I would enjoy it during dinner.

Preferred to have vocals. Nothing wrong with album just not my cup of tea.

If I ever own a fancy Italian restaurant this album is gonna be blasting through those speakers 24/7

It was quite nice as background music - nothing more.

Simply not my kind of music.

Sounds like standard jazz to me…

Not my thing

I had high hopes for this, as I knew the name but had never delved into the back catalogue. But I must admit by the third track I was shocked to realise that the album wasn't almost done. Not really a Jazz person, and this put me in mind of 70s US tv themes as much as anything.

Just average jazz...more meh than anything. The album looped around on me and started over and I didn't even realize that I had head it before it was that generic. 2/5

I want to like jazz more, bit while, at times, the groove on this was fantastic, it often sounded like someone kicking the crap out of a piano in rage whole the rest of the band tuned up.

Not really my thing, but fine background music. The copy on Spotify seems to have been ripped from a scratched CD or something as the last two tracks have a barely perceptible but annoying click all the way through

Ich merke, dass ich mit Jazz/Blues nicht so richtig warm werde...

Not my style but ok

Home Is Where the Music Is is a jazz and Afrobeat double album by South African jazz musician and singer songwriter Hugh Masekela. This is considered one of his best works and the album seamlessly blends signature jazz styles with his home continent's flavor of African music. This was a beautiful jazz album and I enjoyed it, but like I've said before - jazz isn't really my thing.

I just can't get into this, sorry. Maybe I'm too dumb to appreciate jazz. It just felt like background music.

jazzy soy - update: much too jazzy by far, no longer soy

I find that jazz is best served to me in small doses. Although this was interesting and I can't deny the skill that went into creating it, having most songs hit or come close to ten minutes was a bit too much. Some sections felt pretty long-winded and I would start zoning out around 6 minutes in. You know listening to an album becomes a chore when you constantly check how many minutes are left in a certain song, and I, unfortunately, found myself doing that for every track in this album.

Jazz voi olla hyvää, jos siinä on menoa. tässä ei ollut. Dnf.

not really my genre

Sounded like very impressive musicianship, but not to my liking - I prefer cool jazz, but this sounds more like a modern version of bebop.

I had high hopes for this one after the first song, which I really enjoyed. Then it turned into typical background jazz music. Fine to be on while cooking diner, but nothing I will seek out.

Didn't totally hate it, Jazz with no lyrics not for me though

Ok but just not that exciting. Didn't make it to the end

Too much jazz - pointlessly meandering without ever arriving anywhere may be satisfiying for the performers, but may be less so for the listener. Case in point: me. 2/5

The trumpet and saxophone seemed to be on their own track and just mixed on top of the rest of the music most of the time. Sometimes they jived together, but most of the time they didn't. They were on their own beat and own tune. I didn't really care for that. I know that's sometimes part of jazz but I just don't care for music where the instruments aren't on a similar beat and don't mix in tune well.

Masekela fent cas de Davis i recuperant les seves arrels sudafricanes amb un doble disc molt meritori i amb moments per recuperar, però que no termina mai i es fa més llarg que un dia sense pa

It is a jazz album. I don't need or want an hour worth of jazz music.

This is older than me. I can see why KJ said he was falling asleep on Friday.

Man I don't really like jazz. It's some OK background noise but nothing I'd choose to listen to.

It's Jazz. If you like it great but if you don't this gets a bit repetitive.

Jazz is a hard sell for this listener and there is rarely any middle ground between love and hate. The technical prowess required to play jazz has been explained to near death and while it can be appreciated, it does not equal enjoyment. Maybe this is not Hugh Masekela's most important work, but there are moments of nice surrounded by even more moments of insecurity. Jazz by and large seems like a trip into someone's head without your consent, a kidnapping perhaps? Without vested interest, or for a lot of the audience, musical understanding and the subsequent appreciation that comes with that, jazz can feel very foreign. Overall, today 04-12-22 was probably not a day for jazz so criticism is especially harsh for this reviewer. Hugh Masekela is identifiably talented, the seemingly chaotic arrangements e.g. "Maseru" that come back together toward the end is a feeling of overdue respite, but this is where the review gets negative in that enjoyment of music, particularly jazz, should not feel as though it were self-flaggelation with the hopes of earning a right to be a critic. The jazz genre sort of comes across this way because the formula is a bit more complicated, the time signatures ever-fluctuating, the self-aggrandizement of its members an inevitability. Profound respect for the talent and the skill required to put this together, but it does not equal enjoyment here.

The first two songs are perhaps the most enjoyable jazz that I have ever heard. The rest are instrumental fiddling that I wouldn't even want to play as background music. In other words, if "JA" represents the moments where I enjoyed it and "ZZ" represents the moments where... not so much, this album is: JAAAAAZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

An ok jazz instrumental album, but to my untrained Jazz ear nothing really stood out. Best: Unhomé Worst: Ingoo Pow-Pow (Children's Song)

För att vara jazz var detta ok

Beginning to think jazz, salsa, etc are just kind of a bad fit for how I’ve been listening to the albums each day, because with every one of these my experience has been enjoying the first few songs, but then getting completely sick of it by the end of the album. Like I think this just probably isn’t music to be listened to in silence, by myself, on headphones! but it’s not like I own a bar or a club, so,

It's fine, but there's plenty of better jazz to get through before you get to this record.

10 tracks, runtime of 1 hour 16, immediately knew this was either prog or jazz despite never having heard of it. This would be great to have on as backing to a cosy evening drinking whisky or chill afternoon with coffee but not so much for active listening.

Parts of this I enjoyed but most of this I was uninterested. Initially very pleased to see something that isn't 70s rock on here but sorely let down.

Very jazzy

I wanted to like this and maybe I would if it was on in the background?

Didnt mind this, but 1 and only listen.

nä fy

I found this happier than most of the jazz we’ve worked with so far but still didn’t do it for me Fave tracks: “The Big Apple” “Part of a Whole”

Ik had niet eens door dat ik al tegen het einde van dit plaatje loop... niet heel boeiend dus

Jammer als je een beetje dwangmatig bent en je vindt dat je elk album van begin tot eind moet luisteren.

Too jazzy

Well, I thought I'd enjoy this. But I didn't. It wasn't engaging enough and all the songs felt so long. Even that accursed Orbital album was more palatable. Maybe it's just that I haven't listened to much jazz-related music. I don't hate Home Is Where the Music Is but I wouldn't listen to it again. This is definitely not an album that I needed to listen to.

Bueno, pero no lo escucharía siempre, seguro es buen músico pero no lo diferencio de alguien más tocando jazz

not really my kind of thing but it was fine background music for working!

Coffee shop jazz. Meh.

Ya se de donde sacan el soundtrack de los intros de películas porno.

Tämäkään tuotos tästä genrestä ei kovettanut. Kuuntelee kyllä kerran ongelmitta, mutta kuuntelee sen tasan yhden kerran.

Hm...I like Inner Crisis, but all the other songs get me a little nervous

Tough to rate, I rarely listen to Jazz. As a drummer I’ve enjoyed playing Jazz charts because it can be so complex and challenging, but I’ve just never felt it. Whenever a movie tries to inspire love of Jazz (Soul, La-la-land) I’m like the character who says, huh? So did I enjoy listening to this album? Not really.

This is a classic album by Hugh Mase...ZZZzzzzzzz. Sorry, not a jazz fan. I'm sure it's great.

Good for trumpet jazz, but a little too much of a good thing.

Very jazzy. Pretty good. Made me drive faster a couple of times.

Jazz instrumental album. Easy listening. Background music.

Only listened to 2 songs, not my thing but wasn’t bad

Upbeat elevator jazz

Has some nice jazz as well as some African beats. Not too bad

1001 albums de salon lounge, ça va très mal se passer si je revois un tel album dans la liste

Not really my taste, but I listened to it all. The last track was probably the best, most upbeat and fun.

boop boop be doo de de de de booooooo boop de doo wah.

Wisselvallig. Sowieso al niet mijn stijl, maar door de chaos heen af en toe toch iets toegankelijkere stukjes.

Miles likes jazz.

Miles likes jazz.

Too much jazz

Not for me at all

Sim city background music

As much as I like jazz, I can't do a whole album of improvisational jazz. Tastes like capers.

Not unpleasant but didn't really click with me apart from the odd moment here and there

File this in the ‘not for me’ category… although ‘inner crisis’ was ok

Very much not for me I’m afraid. One star. Tom.

Nothing distinct, nothing memorable.

yeah... I listened to like five songs only

The authors of this book have an uncanny ability to find a legendary artist with dozens of albums - only one of which they'll put on this list. And the one they choose is just okay. Pretty impressive how they can do that.

dnt like

420 albums in, and I can confidently say: I still don't like jazz. It all sounds the same to me. There, I said it. #sorrynotsorry

em no. Es solo instrumental wtf

Man I hate Jazz

I must have been in a really good mood to have not fired my phone through the window listening to this.

Not a jazz fan at all.

I can't with this one. this kind of self indulgent jazz is just so not my thing. DNF track 2

i'm sorry. i can't. don't hate me

musica para aperturas de espacios de radio.

I was not ready for more trumpet.

Never ending trumpet at the local cocktail night.

Growing up loving Chet Baker and John Coltrane, I'm finding it difficult to bridge the gap between that and this record. I mean, reading reviews here that describe these tracks as "tasty" or "fun" or non-ironically comparing them to Super Mario (!) makes me feel like I'm missing the frequency everyone else is tuned into

Boring

ich brauche leider lyrics

Очень длинно, мне не понравилось

this was excruciating to get through. i hate jazz, i hated these songs, i hated how long they went for and that this album went for over an hour

Day 180 I just don’t like Jazz very much unfortunately.

Cod jazz hokum done properly by FZ check out Hot Rats etc

Jazz is just not for me...

He's obviously a very skilled musician but god is he boring, music's answer to Frank Pickle.

Felt like I was Carrie Bradshaw’s boyfriend that was obsessed with jazz. Not for me. Too chaotic.

Not my style. An uncultured lout like myself found it to be a complete and utter bore.

👎🏻

I have tried many times, but I cannot do jazz. I appreciate the talent on display, but I did not enjoy this album.

I don't like Jazz.

How many jazz albums will I have to sit through? Still don't like it

It’s hard to find good jazz, and this isn’t it.

New policy. All instrumental stuff is getting 1 star. Fundamentally, it's not what I listen to music for.

Not my stuff.

Not for me

This is fine. I like the Hammond B3 in it. Nope. This is just not my jam. The screechy saxophone solo on Minawa is hard for my untrained ear to distinguish from someone who just picked up the instrument. This is a long album of what basically amounts to one long song. Parts of this album feel like a Bitches Brew knock off. Nomali is my favorite song from this album. Ends with the worst song on the album.

Some nice songs but i got bored

Not that engaging

The algorithm is giving me a lot of jazz lately, and I'll be so happy when we move on to something else. Jazz is not my thing. Sure, there are skilled musicians doing their best work on this album, but it is just not for me.

Weird music

I had a hard time getting through this one, but I wont say it doesn't have its merits just isn't for me. Kind of reminded me of Snoopy lol.

Could not get through the first song

I don’t like jazz.

I will never understand how this type of jazz music is beloved by anyone. It's just a bunch of noise, loosely connected.

No es mi taza de café favorita.

Average jazz, which means fairly boring to me

Just boring but really its just not my thing

No singing-- Feels like ambient background noise.

I learned something over the past few weeks. I really don’t like jazz. This album didn’t change that opinion. This was a struggle to even get through. Masekela may be a master of his art, but not for me.

Not a jazz fan. Hated it. The only song I somewhat liked was the last one with vocals.

I hate jazz!! I hate brass especially trumpets! I hate instrumental music! This was not for me!!!!

First listen

Tråååkigt

Jazz at its worst.

I'm not a Jazz man

Too jazzy for me this time. Some other time this would have been three stars, but not now. Didn't even have stamina to listen it through.

Couldn't listen to this during the day, however it was relaxing while cooking dinner. Overall, not what I'm looking for out of the this list.

Funky jazz. For the duration of each track, a singular musical idea is flogged until it is lying at the side of the track as buckets of cold water are thrown over it and veterinary staff scramble to erect screens around it. Inoffensive and perfectly pleasant, it just does nothing for me - I'm sure this improvisational noodling is a real treat to those who love the genre. At best, background music with some occasional funky action.

76 minutes of music to wait on hold to while a city natural gas clerk takes a nap.

It starts off well, but at a certain point it becomes tiring to listen to. Hugh Masekela's refined sound no longer seems as appealing as it initially was. And so you lose interest in an album that sounds incredible (but only sounds like it).

Not for me. Hard listen at times, absolute background music. Has some ok parts but too long and free form

What’s the point of this? Just gross.

This one is tricky, I mean, its jazz. I love jazz, but I haven't heard a jazz album outside of anything by Cortex, Piero Piccioni, or Archie Shepp that has necessarily moved me. While this album is good, it doesn't feature any tracks that made my eyebrows raise or my ears perk up. I wouldn't listen to this again, but that doesn't mean it's bad, just that its not for me. It got to the point where everything started to sound the exact same where the drums would crash really hard and Hugh would be playing in a super similar way, and a whole hour of that is not what I want to hear, ever. Definitely an album picked to seem deep, but it's just...jazz.

The sax on the first track set the early, agonizing pace... and it was all downhill from there... Seriously, trumpets are the Devil... But at least there weren't any drum solo - - - ugh... And unholy Hell were these songs long and rambling... Definite contender for worst album yet...

I’m sure this is good. I’m sure that there are people who love this sort of music. I just don’t really care to waste my time listening to this. Not for me.

Really not my choice of music. The piano was good sound but trumpet wasn’t my thing and I need words.

This wasn't the worst jazz album but it also wasn't memorable, nothing stood out to me but jazz isn't my thing (yet). There's some rolling drum fills that are entertaining but they're scattered amongst a very long, very schmaltzy hour of music for grandparents. I don't see anything that makes this worthy of the list. The best song was the last one because the album was finally over, jk, I liked the tribal drums and chanting. 1.20 for Hugh and his horn.

Not really that enjoyable. Bunch of squeaking and honking. "Blues for Huey" sounded like the drummer was wrapping up the song the whole time. Prob heard this over at nan and gramps at some point. I could skip the jazz era and not feel like I missed out on anything...9.75.

I would have considered myself somewhat of a jazz fan, but as more entries end up on this list it is becoming clear how hard it is to appreciate in anything other than small bites. I was somewhat into this jazz fusion album for a little while, but I definitely didn't need 70+ minutes of it. 3, maybe 4 songs of this would have been fine. Unfortunately the long playtime and a couple really bad songs at the tail end dragged down what would have otherwise been an OK listen. Hard not to pass on Home Is Where the Music Is as a result. Cut this album into a third and it likely picks up a couple full points. 1.27 stars

I just kept feeling like I was in a super dark jazz club the entire time and I was BORED. Of course I need to preface that jazz has never been of interest to me simply because it feels very one layered to me, and this confirmed my boredom and disapproval.

not for me

This sounds like what I think of when I think of jazz. (ntm.)

no lyrics

215/1001

I couldn't finish the thing. I lasted a couple of tracks before realising this just isn't for me at all. I am not a fan of music that has no discernible melody or rhythm, it puts me on edge and makes me anxious.

I gave up barely into track 2.

Nicht meine Richtung

Struggled with this one I'm afraid

Too long and boring, I was rather pleased when it was done. It was completely innofensive, but it still gets a 1 for being over an hour.

Jazz just isn't my jam.

חופר מדי

Not for me

"Home Is Where the Music Is is a 1972 jazz and Afrobeat double LP". Oh. Great. A mashup of my least favourite genres, from my most despised decade of music, and it's a double helping? Pure cacophony. If you're going to play instruments, at least adhere to a structure. I don't even want to think of the wankers who hear this and give it a 5.

Just miserable

Before listening: I don't know who this is but I'm worried he's some third tear Marvin Gaye or Al Green, two artists I don't even like. I think we're in for a doozy. After listening: This might've been an instrumental so I ran for my life. Don't know if there were words and I didn't bother to wait. Sorry Hugh.

jazz albums do not need to be 1 hour plus

Nichts für mich!

I don't like jazz.

Hin und wieder habe ich mit dem Kopf bei "Part of a whole" etwas mitgewippt. Ich bin kein riesiger Trompeten- bzw. Blasinstrument-Fan. Für nebenbei etwas zu komplex. Fürs aufmerksam Hören zu wenig für mich persönlich.

Not my cup of Jazz

While i believe this gentleman is very talented, instrumentals are just not for me. I was reminded of music played during corporate happy hour or a hotel lobby. Not bad - just not what I’d gravitate towards in most scenarios. Truth be told, did not complete the full album.

Because I’m not a fan of jazz, can’t really rate this album any higher. It’s not an album I’d actively seek out and listen to again.

total arse

Jazz to long

Thumbs down.

Just jazz

Jokin tässä on sekä rytmisesti että melodisesti tavallista armollisempaa. Korkea 1.

Abandoned in favour of some electro

If this music lived in my home I'd go out for a pack of cigarettes and never come back.

Wow was this one album? Felt like it lasted about 7 hours

Not my preference - excellent musicians.

Not the biggest jazz fan. I want to get into it, and I like a particular sound, but I don’t know enough of it yet to figure out what it is. This was aight tho, stand outs were tracks 3-5. Also liked the drum solo on track 7. Also confirmed this is the father of Sal Masekela. Shout out Sal.

I'm sorry, but this was a gigantic waste of my time. I've been slowly warming up to jazz music throughout this musical journey, but this subgenre of boring elevator music that is essentially just one guy playing random piano notes for 76(!!!) minutes, is something I will probably never understand. I can't give this anything but a 1/5. I apologize for my ignorance, but this was basically the musical equivalent of watching paint dry.

A 70s lounge but with someone occasionally stepping on a cat.

Jazz is for decepticons. 1/5

Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Some nice sounds at the start, just not my taste Favourite song: didn’t have one

I’ve been trying to avoid giving jazz albums 1s because I don’t like giving genres I just don’t get low scores, but I really did not like this.

Not a jazz instrumentals guy. Plus, most of the songs are unavailable on spotify.

Another jazz album.... seemed to be little difference between tracks.

Pass. A tough listen for me. Didn't make it through the end. .5 for me just because it was music

This was pretty boring I must say. To be fair I was embattled in an NHL 17 playoff race the entire time. Go flyers 2020 champs 1/10

I hate Jazz, but the Afrobeat side of it was not too bad though. I just got listening fatigue way too early and I just did not like it. Might be a little unfair giving it a 1, but that is just how I feel right now.

with the 2 previous ones in a row, its like somebody wants me to die... I was generous for the others but this one deserves nothing

90s dance music - not my thing

Not my buzz

Jazzy...not in the mood though

Jävla 9+ min trumpeter, lyssnade 1,5 låtar.

Sounds like ambient music you would get in a lift. Just me?

Ron burgendy is the finest jazz guy I know. This was shit

Restaurant music, not my preference 2/10

I gave it a shot, but jazz just isn't my thing.

-jazz. -snl-ass jazz. -i will never listen to this again.

Disappointing

I’m just saying that you don’t want a baby because you’re going out of the country with a kid 🧒 who doesn’t know you exist or that your family has no business 👩‍💼 and your mom 🧑 and I are both very much happy 😃 but I’m also happy 😃 so happy 😀 so excited 😆 happy 😃 I can’t find any of the girls 🧒 I have been working for the longest so I’m excited 😊 and I’m glad 😌 to know I can have the opportunity and get the opportunity of having the chance for the baby in a better life too thank you for nothing
