great drums, some cool moments but I don't feel it that much apart from that
Det var musik
I highly dislike jazz, this recommendation helped me only with making sure I do. For that reason I can't comment on quality.
Jazz is cool and all, but I got really bored about halfway through.
Part of a whole takes a while to get going, but once it loosened up a bit i quite enjoyed it. Minawa feels far too straight for my liking and is therefore quite dull The jazz drum is the star of the big apple. Maseru offers a real freak out performance which finally offers some life, even of it ventures into “recorded in front of a live studio audience territory”. Inexplicably it goes into a dull piano break before the bass appears and speeds things along. Inner crisis hits like a good old police drama theme. Ingoo pow pow adds some vocals of sorts, but does nothing to raise the enjoyment levels. Overall just a fairly dull album
Whilst I continue to dislike jazz, this at least was somewhat more bearable than most of the other jazz stuff that has been forced on me.
I am going to have listened to more jazz during this project than I have during the entirety of the rest of my life. I'm genuinely starting to wonder what proportion of this list is jazz, because it's beginning to feel like I'm never more than 4 days away from more jazz. And, at best, I'm indifferent to it. The piano section in the first track is horrible, which is a shame as I wasn't hating the rest. I was somewhat surprised by the noise that I assume was a saxophone, but sounded like a swanee whistle. When your song is nearly 10 minutes long, you do not need a fade out ending. After that I zoned out a bit, though I did quite like (at least bits of) Nomali. I still don't really find jazz that engaging though, so we're back to some more low scores: 2/5
A little too meandering for me overall but definitely a nice listen.
60/1001 First listen. Five seconds in and I’m giving this a 3/10 (tolerable). In fact I’m writing this review now. If anything changes in the next hour and fifteen minutes I’ll update my rating. I have an open mind but jazz? 3/10
Tooooo long, but a pleasant sound nonetheless 4/10 Favourite track: N/A
It just never ends
My initial impression of "Home Is Where The Music Is" was promising, especially the opening track 'Part of a Whole' that starts with some lovely piano work. However, this appeal quickly faded. By the three-minute mark, the track felt aimless and overextended. This trend continued with subsequent tracks, like 'Minawa', where the shift from piano to trumpet failed to capture my interest. At 76 minutes, the album's lack of brevity made the listening experience attritional rather than engaging; a feeling of indulgence that soon became tiresome, reinforcing my suspicion that Jazz is not my genre. Apologies to the Jazz aficionados but for me this was a disappointing two-star experience. 1 "Part of a Whole" (2/5) 2 "Minawa" (2/5) 3 "The Big Apple" (2/5) 4 "Unhomé" (1/5) 5 "Maseru" (2/5) 6 "Inner Crisis" (2/5) 7 "Blues for Huey" (1/5) 8 "Nomali" (2/5) 9 "Maesha" (2/5) 10 "Ingoo Pow-Pow" (Children's Song) (1/5) Total - 17 Average - 1.7 174/1001 95/174 albums reviewed were new to me.
I just… really don’t like Jazz apparently
Music for playing quietly in the background. In a coffee shop or cocktail bar. Maybe an elevator. Not a bad album if you like that sort of thing. Not something I'd actively have chosen for myself and I doubt I'll listen again, unless im in a very spoecific mood. I did not enjoy. Found myself actually hoping that it would end by the time the last track started. One more song!!!! too bad it was over 6 minutes long. but surprisingky the last track is the most interesting of all.
Säkert bra
There's a lot more jazz on this list than I expected. It's really cementing my dislike for the genre.
Couldn't find the write up on this one. Must have been in an early version of 1,001. Pretty neutral on it. I did find myself checking, "is this over yet?" many times hence the lower rating.
- Strongly appreciate his activism. - I’m not into jazz, but this album's pretty inoffensive and palatable as far as jazz goes because there is a fairly strong melodic core to the songs, but I don’t think I’ll ever reach for it. - I’m not into the tone of the trumpet/flugelhorn… it isn’t as smooth as I like - it can feel muddy (not precise enough) and rough/scratchy. I also find that it’s so much more forward than anything else, so it ruins the songs for me. - The piano tone is nice, though. - Why does every song have to be so long? - Nomali is pretty.
Apparently I don’t like jazz.
76 minutes of jazz. I'd have worn a nicer wristwatch if I'd known how long I was going to spend staring at it today.
This challenge has really reinforced something I already suspected before starting it nearly two years ago: I genuinely struggle with jazz. And this album was no different. It’s long, repetitive, and doesn’t offer much variety to pull me in. The Afrobeat infusion does add some energy and makes parts of it more engaging, but overall it’s not something I’d return to. Favourite track: Honestly, I couldn’t pick one – it all blends together for me. Least favourite track: “Ingoo Pow Pow” felt like a complete and utter mess. Album artwork: A classy cover, at least.
This project is making me realize that I don't really like trumpet music that much
No idea why this and not any other random jazz album. It was fine and groovy in parts. It had weird trumpet pageantry in others that seemed a better fit for high school drama class.
Not such a great idea to listen to this album back to back with Miles Davis, left it sounded pretty bland, even after In a Silent Way which is a pretty laid back Miles album, Miles is never bland. Every now and then I started getting excited about some of the builds after the solo sections, but never the solos themselves. Not my day to meet Hugh Masekela.
Yazz
Add another jazz album added to the list lol it was alright just not my cup of teas lol
Just really long, enjoyed some elements but like 70 minutes is just two much for this type of music. 2 stars
Wow I hate jazz.
Boring, couldn’t get into it
‘One thing I’ve learnt from 1001 is that I can’t really handle Jazz in most forms.’ This is the most liked review for this and I think it reflects my opinions exactly.
Baustelle, Gerstetten, Heidenheim. Stinklangweilig.
Just kind of bland Best Song: The Big Apple Rating: 4.5/10 Stars: 2
Not super into it :(
Good album. Competant jazz with African flourishes. The African bits are the most impassioned and interesting. The jazz is pretty ordinary though. Last track the best. Probably was groundbreaking for jazz listeners at the time but so kuedos for that but modern jazz listeners will have heard this territory explored more adventurously with better results
Not in the jazz mood today. 2/5
- Jazz & Afrobeat album - It's a nice jazz album, and clearly lots of talent is present, I'm just not sure no-vocals jazz is really for me - Was difficult for me to get into, but would be good study/background music
I don't know what this is or why it's on here. It says he was at the forefront of blending jazz and world music but I only hear smooth jazz. It's not offensive just a bit boring, belongs in an elevator.
It's jazz - horns and there's a piano. No thank you.
Run of the mill jazz. The Big Apple was the highlight for me. 2.4 outta 5
Prefer his other stuff
eh.
Jazz. The horny kind.
Meh
Started yesterday and listened to about half. Didn’t annoy me as much as other 1’s, and wasn’t unlistenable. Certainly better than Miles’ first offering. Just about a 2.
With instrumental jazz, my approach is now to listen to a song and decide whether it's a 1 (annoying) or 2 (boring). Congratulations to Hugh on his well-earned 2 stars
Didnt mind some of it
Jazz is very much not my cup of tea, background music at its finest
Litt for masete etter min smak
not a fan
Good, nothing that blew me away like the 1952 miles Davis birth of the cool but what my untrained ear would say as standard jazz.
Nice background music, enjoyed more than I expected, however, not something I could see myself putting on again. 2.5/10
More of a reflection on me then the album
I listen to my daily albums first thing with a cup of coffee. In that setting this album is fine as background noise to get your day started but can’t imagine ever choosing to listen to this again. Or any jazz album for that matter. Far too many of them on this list.
Jazz, not much more to say
I used to really like that kind of jazz, I guess I outgrew it, it is just irritating noise now
I can't lie, despite the talent this bored the crap out of me. My band kid heart did enjoy the musicianship, but this album was far too long. By the end I was just really over it. Jazz in small doses is fine by me, but this was really just overdoing it. Not for me.
It's very long. I'm sure it's very good but if truth be known I would never listen to a jazz album.
Too jazzy?
Decent but not my style
Very good but think I've heard recent stuff like this so didn't hit as hard as the Fela Kuti album did. I'm glad to deposit his name & sound to my memory bank.
Wavered between a 2 and 3 star for this as like all very long albums the songs were hit and miss. The last song pushed it down, but there were a few pleasant listens.
Pleasant background music. Not my cup of tea usually though
Har ikke knekt jazz-koden ennå. Enten full sprut av ikke planlagte trompetlyder eller kun pusting på bassen. Hva skjera.
Opening track got me hooked thinking this album would be great, and some subsequent tracks kept it going for me, but then I slowly got bored and was really bored by the time Maesha was on.
Decent album. I like his version of Grazing in the Grass
Love the doubling horns and other brass playfulness. Love that they tend to somewhat start and finish a song, not getting (too) lost in solos, although towards the end of the album it starts falling more and more into the 'annoying jazz tricks' pit for me. For example in 'Blues for Huey' an icky long drum solo. The songs tend to have an emotional story arc, which I appreciate. Virtuosity is not the point. I still don't find instrumental jazz interesting enough to sit through an entire album. But in the right time and place, this could be ok.
A bit on the experimental side of jazz
Jazzy and contemporary art of music. Piano is bringing like a whole Orchestra into it. Good for relaxing vibes with reading.
High quality Afro-jazz. I'm not a big fan of jazz but this is almost good enough for me to carve out an exception for a few of the songs.
Not unpleasant. Very long. Not particularly engaging.
I'm too pleb for this
It’s not great driving to work at 8am music, but it is good jazzy music to put on while making dinner. It’s also pretty long.
Bar Schach Atmosphäre schnell eintönig
Ugh, jazz.
The Vince Guaraldi Trio did the music for Charlie Brown. This was not dissimilar to that.
Screechy and honking horns over lovely piano playing.
Good Player, but two sad
more diner party music. but it's not bad. It's in the same style as Myles Davis Bitches Brew.
It's great background music. In a room with people. Not so much when you're trying to work. The musicians know what they're doing, the arrangements are intricate... But in the whole I really can't get into this, and it feels like it's partly my fault.
2+ Stars (6/15)
Jazz just rubs me the wrong way and this album is no exception. Some of the tracks are not too bad but most are like Blues for Huey which incorperates all the aspects that turn me of jazz including that "Listen to me being brilliant for no particular reason" vibe which most jazz suffers from to an unbearable degree.
Perfectly fine Jazz for background music but suffers a lot for all the main problems that plague the genre. Mainly just not my cup of tea even if I can appreciate some of the talent involved to make it.
You get a real jazz/funk fusion vibe from this album. It's neat, but I still am not a big jazz person, and many of the tracks ran together for me. It's a fine vibe, but not usually the mood I'm going for when I put on music.
I'll be completely honest I just can't get into this. It's by no means a bad album it's just not my thing at all. I appreciate the work that went into this album and it has some great performances all throughout. My stand out track is blues for Huey because of the amazing drumming.
Jazz, algo melancolico, excepto cuando la trompeta suena potente. Si te gusta el jazz... pero tectiene que gustar. Esta bien como fondo de una peli de robos 😅
Only the first two songs of the album were available on Steam, I guess the rest just weren't meant to be listened to. Overall, not too bad of an album, it sounds like background music for a movie from the 70s where not a lot is happening in the scene that we're watching, but then in the second song, it sounds like even less would be happening. Not a bad jazz piece - a bit meh, but definitely very chill.
Immediately engaging and refreshingly unique at the start. It really drew me in - but as it went on, it became rather repetitive, and I found my attention drifting.
I am not a Jazz girly
Previše neupečatljivo da opravda ovoliko trajanje.
If you love horny jazz, this is for you. I wasn’t in the mood. 1001 album worthy: nah: 101/188
unfortunately another jazz album that must have some boundaries
Clearly talented, liked it at bits and wish I was more in the mood for jazz while listening but... it also didn't do much to get me in the mood. I like to think I was ready to meet ya halfway, Hugh, but ya never popped and stayed pretty meh.
★★★½
This is a serene, soulful jazz-fusion album, easy on the ears however lacking in the crazy, off-beat twists and turns which define my favourite albums and artists of the genre. It's also pretty damn long at 76 minutes in length, which I'm not entirely sure is fully warranted given what is explored (or not) across its running time. I can sometimes vibe with this sort of stuff, but I wasn't particularly in the mood for over an hour of it today, and I didn't last the course.
I like the afrobeat behind the jazz but that is about it. It's another album where I recognize the artistry but I just don't enjoy it.
Is it music? Yes. Is it music I enjoy? No. If you like jazz, you’ll like this album. Of you don’t like jazz, well you get the idea.
I'm sure for some people, this really hits an emotional spot. Not for me.
Good musicianship, but forgettable
Not listened to it much to be honest.
Fine in a jazz bar in the background, don’t want to listen to it for fun. Pretty bored.
Wahhhh. Apparently! I! Don't! Like! Jazz!
2/5 not bad but not for me
Yeah man right on
I've tried. I've tried. I'm just not a jazz guy.
This album pretty much falls into my "Not bad but not my cup of tea" category. I really enjoy jazz, but this was just a bit too noodly for my tastes.
There were a couple songs I liked, then stopped liking, then started liking again. Just a bit too long.
The kind of jazz CDs they used to sell at Starbucks
Outside of David Sanborn/Kenny G, this was my first time dedicated listening to a jazz album front to back. It's pleasant enough, I could see playing this while working or as background music for a dinner party, but I don't think it’s something I would listen to regularly or during my commute. Much of the album sounds like soundtrack to a 1970's crime drama - I could see Gene Hackman trailing a bell-bottomed thug, pausing to crush a cigarette before going down into the NYC subway. Track 5 was a standout. I'm sure this album has reach and meaning to many but just not my thing. 2/5.
It's competent but jazz is boring.
Not for me, don't have any context to say whether this is seminal or anything either.
lidt ligegyldig
Way too much jazz. Just too much trying to make an amazing solo while doing the same boring thing everybody else does. Drums are solid though.
Most of the songs were taken down but those that remained were kind of boring. Realized I’m not that big of a fan of jazz.
Enjoyed Ingoo Pow-Pow, the rest was mediocre
jazz is still just not for me
Not a fan.
I don't know what to do with this. Sometimes jazz hits, and sometimes it doesn't for me. Too often throughout this album, the sax and/or trumpet are too chaotic - too much noodling. Highlights - Maseru really kicks in nicely, Nomali, and then Maesha takes me somewhere and I'm happy to go. But overall, there's too much that I would want to actively push stop on.
I dislike jazz. I dislike brass instruments.
Inspired playing of uninspired music.
The second jazz album that has come up for me is. I am learning that I like the drumming and bass in jazz, but I am not crazy about horns, especially brass. They seem to overpower the rest of the music. I don't think I would want to listen to this again.
Zzzz
Love jazz but this doesn't do it for me. It's a bunch of very skilled musicians using their ability and knowledge to make background music for The Sims. Maesha in particular felt like a bland, never ending slog.
Aussi incontournable qu'un lampadaire dans un immense stationnement.
Not that much afrobeat on this list and it's not really all that obvious on this album either. I'm not much of an jazz fan, too much of it is toying with "standards", showing off technical ability and constant soloism. This album has it's moments, but it blends into nondescript background music very easily. I'm dissapointed.
I always want to like jazz, but rarely do. This was ok.
Jazz. I love jazz. This was nice, but less interesting than the Jazz I love.
This is an alright jazz album to put on in the background. I'm not big on jazz but there was enjoyable things here, maybe overstayed it's welcome a bit
I really hate rating this as low as I do, it just isn't my type of music. I can really appreciate the artestry that's in this, the more unconventional trumpet and trombone parts and the dynamics of it all, but I just don't really enjoy it. I'm sorry.
Interesting instrumentals I probably don’t know enough about to properly appreciate. Definitely some funky moments but nothing jumped out overall. (2.5 stars)
Different
6/10 Highlights Ingoo Pow-Pow
Time to throw a dinner party cause that’s pretty much the only place I see myself listening to this again
76 minutes of instrumental impro-jazz to start the week? Now that’s just fuckin’ great! I have to admit I really like a lot of the main themes in the songs. Therefore it is a shame that they improvise away from them most of the time. I have found out throughout this project that I hate impro with a passion.
Not a big fan of jazz
I guess I might not like jazz?
Oh jazz, how do I rate you? There is a voice telling me that I "should" like this, but I just can't get into the music. It's not horrible, but I would never pick this album to just listen to for pleasure. Plus, this one is too long.
This is my third straight album that's over an hour long. It's very talented instrumental play, but overall, not my cup of tea, and yes, a bit too long. Favorite Track: "Inner Crisis".
Fin baggrunds jazz. Dog stadig jazz.
Mere jazzet og mindre afro-beatet end jeg havde håbet. Til tider nogle okay jazz toner, men ofte alt for langt.
As jazz goes, this isn't too bad, but it's still not something I would choose to listen to, or listen to twice at any rate.
..
Jazz is not my thing
Not bad just not my thibg
Little too jazzy for me.
Nope. I tried jazz ages ago. I even pretended to like it for a while. This is classic jazz that I cannot connect with. Someone likes this, not me, not ever.
I thought the first track was a little interesting, but the further the album progressed the less interested I became.
I can flugel my horn with the best of them. But this album was just to long winded. Better than some of the jazz efforts already received here, but end of the day it’s just jazz to me.
Really dull. And possibly the worst album name ever
It’s jazz
Better than some other jazz albums we’ve had but still not my bag. Way too long and really started to drag in the back half. 2/5
Ett bra groove, jag fattar att det är stort.. men det är långt utifrån boxen, jag kan inte ta till mig så mycket trumpet!
Fairly anodyne jazz.
If you don't like this album, you don't like jazz. And I can confidently say that I don't like jazz.
One of the greatest trumpeters of all time.Love is work.
Would LOVE if I were in a bar with low lighting, sipping a negroni and smoking a cigarette. Then I’d be, like, “wow, this is my jam”. But I was not.

SimCity music
Bien
Good listening music.
For me Jazz equals sleep. 2 stars or D.
I like the trumpet, but not that much
It's ok. I must be picky with my jazz tastes. This one didn't sit well with me.
Blues. Okay, got it. Decent but yeah
I was kinda excited for this because I'd never heard of this artist or album before, but it was a disappointment. Dull, overlong, too smooth.
Still too young for jazz. Home iIs Where The Music Is runs long and is an entry in the ”too long” list. I did enjoy Inner Crisis, the rest were jazz. (2.3*s)
Starting this off with an explanation of my mind...jazz is not my thing and after listening to two albums in a row I tried to think about why. I think it is the lack of cohesion and what I perceive as chaos in the music, which I am sure is the point, so I tried to think of how to perceive the chaos positively. In this album it was not bad....it seemed to flow most of the time, and connect back to the undersounds that carried the songs. However, they were just long, for me anything over 6 minutes just seems to drag so I just didn't need so much. I think I could have almost enjoyed it if they were shorter.
Christ, that was a slog. It's definitely too long, it's decent where it has some energy, but it loses it all too often and that makes it a tough listen, particularly towards the end. Think it's another 2, I'm afraid, the beginning isn't good enough to hold up the long tail.
Väldigt trevlig musik men kanske inte riktigt min smak. Funkar kanske bra som mingelmusik där hemma någon gång?
Couple of bits stuck out, but this was mainly background music for me. It was pleasant enough, but it didn't move me in any way, shape, or form. It was also way too long, which is why I feel somewhat justified in awarding it only 2 stars.
Sounds fine, but I still don't get this genre.
jazz... dan weet je genoeg... op zich goeie ideeën en melodieën... maar uitgemolken tot op het bot en verder
Jazz is nice in short bits, but really makes me annoyed & uncomfortable in long form.
Really wanted to like this one, but have always found jazz from that period hit and miss. This had too many jangly discordant passages thst I just wanted to be over, so not quite a 3.
You like Jazz. I don't particularly
The first half of this album was solid, listenable, a little boring, but fine. The back half was disjointed and at times seemed musically bad. 3 for the first half, 1 for the second half.
this was mostly unintrusive. one of the songs sounded like the mario 2 theme for a minute that was nice
I kind of liked the final track, which was the most 'fun' by far, but the rest was "tolerable in the background" until inevitably some squeaking and/or really rapid technically-adept but really grating horns
Jazz, as usual, is not my jam but I can see how others appreciate it :)
Abrasive on the old ears.
Did not leave much impact on me personally
this was good and i enjoyed listening too it, but i probably wouldn’t hear it again, at least not in one go, just bc it’s very long and jazz doesn’t do much for me
Ena stunden ett trumpetsolo. Nästa stund ett trumpet solo.
Thid didn't excite us and was also so quiet at points, but then blasted us later when we had turned it up to accommodate.
Nice, jazzy
Some of the tracks are good in isolation, my favourite being the drum solo to close out 'Blues for Hughey'. However, I don't think I'll be coming back to a 70+ minute long mostly instrumental album with nothing much else going for it
Not my cup of tea. Too dull.
May revisit one day
I struggled
part of a whole - warm piano, and trumpet?, nice drum rhythms, 4 min mark with trill on horn instrument, section with bass cymbals and piano, favourite section in this song, I like the recurring hook in this song minawa- very jazzy piano, bass, high piano arpeggios, trumpet at 2:30, crashes at 5mins, decrescendo at 6mins, I like that tom rhythm in the background, really pretty ending to that song the big apple - I liked that chord at around 1:12, I like this drum rhythm, hihat and snare, another one at 3:30, cool sound like a whistle at 5:23, 5:48 another chord, quiets after with piano taking main focus, ride cymbals come in at 7mins, fade out ending unhome - solo bass, trumpet comes in, light drums and piano, piano and toms briefly follow same rhythm maseru - solo trumpet, wow okay very uptempo, fast piano and busy rhythms, definitely a highlight, almost like swing jazz sound, piano trill at 2:55, bass becomes more prominent at 3:45, just piano at 4mins, rhythm changed, very busy again with hectic bass and piano, as well as drums, what an outro inner crisis - beautiful piano and bass supporting, eerie vibe, changes 1:25 all other instruments come in, I like those hihats in right at 3:45, changes to left, I really like the chorus section how all the instruments unite blues for huey- ride in left, snare rhythm in right, bass and trumpet come in, bass follows horn in melody, kick rhythm at 2mins, drums only and crescendo, eventually trumpet comes back at 3:40 or so with melody while drums feel very chaotic, bass returns at 4 mins, piano returns 4:20, “call an ambulance” I liked that nomali- beautiful piano and ride cymbal, trumpet, chords change at 2mins, with drums, fade out maesha - 10 min song, trumpet piano and drums comes in and makes entrance, bass becomes prominent at 4mins, trumpet is back at 7mins, as well as this crackle noise, trumpet and bass play same notes at 9mins ingoo pow pow - fast tempo, hihat in right, toms, vocalists singing noises, what am I listening to right now I really hate this, what a terrible ending to an otherwise nice sounding album If not for Maseru this album would rate lower honestly. As beautiful as some of these sections of these songs are, this album is a drag and goes on forever. It’s really not my style, wouldn’t listen to again but glad to give it a chance with zero skips,
Admittedly not my genre but I wasn't able to get through this one. So many pretentious, drawn out jazz numbers that by the 7th song I was done. Boring, slow, uninspired. 4/10 (2/5)
Generic, hotel lobby jazz.
#333. Thank you for your patience. An associate will be with you shortly. 2/5: jazz
I wish I could get into jazz, but I still don't get it. It's not necessarily unpleasant music, but it always sounds like one long song to me. 2.5 stars
I have no idea when one song ended and another began. I’m sorry, God, I don’t like jazz.
I guess I like this more than some of the other jazz (I forgot I was listening to it rather than being put off by it) but I have no other comments.
Fine jazz. Quite good as background music and had its moments of interest for me, but mostly I think that jazz will probably never be my thing.
I don’t get jazz
Welcome to Jazz Club…
Jazz. Not bad, but I’m just not really a jazz guy. A bit on the long side for me as well.
Decent jazz. Really nothing outstanding in my book. Maybe I've just been spoiled with extremely good jazz in the past. Interesting thing about this album is that it has a strong African vibe at times.
Part of a Whole - 3 Minawa - 2 The Big Apple - 3.5 Unhome - 2 Maseru - 2 Inner Crisis - 3 Blues for Huey - 2 Nomali - 2.5 Maesha - 2 Ingoo Pow Pow - 2 Too slow and low for me.
Nice and relaxing, but nothing outstanding. This would be great to listen to in a restaurant or cafe while eating or having a conversation, but I’m not sure why this is an album I need to listen to before I die.
Some of the songs sounded like background music for a 70s TV show. I don't care for jazz music, but I'll give it an extra star for not being grating, at least.
Found this fairly boring.
Music to get anxious too. Which by some, I imagine, unintended irony ‘Inner Crisis’ was the most accessible tune on here.
I'm sure it's very accomplished in its genre, but I just do not give a s*** right now.
Maybe I'm not very knowledgeable about jazz, but I didn't find it a great album. It sounds good, but it didn't excite me.
1. part - 1.5 2. minauua - 1 3. big apple - 1 4. unhome - 1.5 5. mazeru - 1 6. criziz - 1 7. huey - 1.5 8. nomali - 1 9. maezha - 0 10. ingoo - 0
Relaxing jazz interrupted by anxiety inducing horn runs. This album is hell for neuro spicy brains, I would be pleased to never hear it again.
4/10 I took a nap. it was not without a vague sense of jazz though. 5-21-2024
A chill listen if you're in for some calming jazzy background music. Makes you feel like you're in a fairly swanky hotel restaurant for a peaceful Easter Sunday brunch
Vibes. Straight vibes. But I gotta be in the right mood for it.
Starts off promising, but it’s too hectic and anxiety inducing. Did not really enjoy this. Maybe it was influential?
Jazz just isn't for me.
Promising start, feels like appropriate dinner party background music. The kind where your guests leave thinking you're a bit of an ass.
No thanks
It’s jazz alright
I liked it. Although not my favorite type of music it played well. Songs were too long and sometimes got too repetitive and boring. One song cant remember which had a trumpet part and then abruptly it started a piano part which was surprising and refreshing.
first song was fun but a bit long, blues for huey was a lot of drums which i'm a big fan of, this could have been half as long and would have been better for it.
The singles are good and the rest is so boring
Not the biggest fan of jazz but there were one or two on here that brought a nice vibe to walking through the city.
don't enjoy jazz
neat
Mouais c'est du jazz quoi
started off really interested, but by track 3 this just became background noise for me.
Very talented but not for me. I likes the last song best.
Oh great, more background music.
A lot of jazz is great and innovative. This is not. You can tell that he's starting to go down the smooth jazz path.
background music
some jazz sounds fresh and innovative but this just sounds like a lot of other jazz.
Tried with this album, but it couldn't hold my focus
Not super into jazz.
Aight but annoying
This was a tedious listen for me. I just wasn’t feeling any of it, although I can appreciate the musicianship. Normally pretty into jazz, these songs just didn’t feel like they were going anywhere. Nice enough 70s sound suitable for background music in a movie or something I guess. Just not for me.
My apologies to all you jazz fans that I keep giving these albums two stars. There were two songs on this album, Nomali and Maseru, that I enjoyed a bit. But I can’t imagine re-listening to this album. I knew the name Hugh Masekela through a musician named Johnny Clegg, whose music I enjoy, who named him as a major influence. So I went to check out more music by Mr. Masekela, and in fact I enjoy much of it. But the music he was making at the time of this album is not for me. I’m grateful that it made me research him more deeply to find a plenty of music that he made that I enjoy very much!
Jazz is not made for me. First song was good after I lost interest.
I’m not very into the jazz scene so I have not heard of this album before. It is effective as background music but I don’t think I will listen again.
A little too old-school jazz. Ok for background but not one to focus listening ear.
Jazzzzzz. Great background, cuz I just cant listen to Jazz instrumentals all by themselves
More evidence that I guess I just really don’t understand jazz. This one did not create quite the cacophony that others have, and I didn’t find it unpleasant. It just didn’t spark my interest either.
not my vibe. I have decided I don't like Jazz
Boring. He kind of threw in some Afrobeat stuff to make it less straight jazz, but...yeah. Jazz.
Jazz mit Trompete
i'd study to this. too long though.
Not feeling this one
Good, but not my thing
Mild noodles.
Album # 2. I am not a fan of Jazz so this album was filler music while I conducted my work. Obviously he is using a lot of percussions and brass instruments and thus some of it reminded me of the band Chicago. It was nice to have on in the background on a low volume but not my cup of tea
Bonita instrumental
El groove inicial me ha sorprendido para bien y cuando se centra en eso y melodía es realmente agradable. Pero en cuanto hace "jazz things" (canciones eternas, solos de virtuosismo turrero...) me cansa instantaneamente.
Not my cup of tea
Ich würde sagen Barjazz. Habe ich beim langen Lauf gehört und wunderte mich, dass das Gejaule gar nicht aufhört. 72 Minuten ist das schon schwer zu ertragen. Für Liebhaber sicher super.
Jazz. Nun gut. Immerhin einer der melodischeren und harmonischeren Art.
Not my style but understand why it is considered a quality album.
Jazz
Not really my thing. Kind of sounded like 70s variety show music.
I did not enjoy this album at all. I am not a fan of most forms of Jazz, so it sounded like elevator music to me or music just to put in the background. There were some moments were I felt something, but it did not last long. Favorite Song(s): N/A
Jazzy
What’s the big deal about this one?
I do not listen to many instrumental albums... So this was a bit of a challenge for me to get through. As a trumpet player, some of the playing on this album is WILD! Never in my life could I play notes as rapidly as he can. His fingers must be flying. A lot of the slower moments were really beautiful. I don't really like instrument playing that's too gritty or grimy, which pulled me out of a lot of songs. That's a big personal preference thing though, the playing itself was amazing. Some of the songs on this album got WEIRD. Which was cool but also a little mind-numbing. Favorites: Maesha Honorable Mention: Blues for Huey for shredding my last braincell apart with the drums
I dont mind but Why is this album round the 9 min per song
A bit dull.
Sounds refined but there's no way I'm regularly listening to 8 minute jazz songs dominated by trumpet.
it was fine
This is just more jazz to me. Pleasant enough, but unremarkable.
Not bad but kind of boring.
musically good, but hard to listen to without vocals, would be good study music though.
The jazz was not good for a long drive
2/5 - an album is a collection of songs
Decent pleasant but unlikely to listen to it again High 2/5
Jazz sudafricano!!! Esta lista sigue siendo capaz de sorprender después de más de 500 discos. Me ha gustado Minawa pero se me ha hecho pesado y plano. Más o menos me gusta este tipo de jazz pero este disco no es imprescindible.
Im not into jazz/blues
I could not finish this album. I wasn't for me. Repetitive trumpet music is not my style.
Gear: Dunu SA6 Artwork: 😐🔠⬜ Production: 👂🔎🔥 Music: 🎷🎶⏳ Rating: 🎺🎺/5
Not my thing at all. Coffee shop music
The generator has been punishing me w/ far too much jazz lately! It's still a no!
A long jam jazz album
My home is not where this music is going to be in future.
Not my type of music
Background Jazz.
not for me
I still don’t get jazz. The last track was kinda cool.
Puhaltimet kivat ja taitavat kyllä, mutta en saa niiden tarinoista kiinni. Eli jää tylsänksi, joskin kiva pirteäksi.
I like a lot of jazz, but I do find it either hits the mark or is left floundering. Strangely for me this is neither. Nice background music, doesnt really go anywhere often. Sometimes borders on the ‘80s tv theme tune’ ground, other times it does border on the interesting. But not too much. The more piano based songs are a bit dull, but often picked up when the trumpet comes in. I think its a trumpet anyway. Whatever the instrument is that makes this sound better.
Really pleasant smooth jazz. Started off strong but ended up having had enough just past half way.
Yes, it's jazz alright! Quite enjoyed it, but mostly as background music really. It's difficult to give jazz records a fair score as I'm probably never choosing to listen to it again, and I couldn't pick any song out individually that I enjoyed But overall it's not bad. Probably demonstrating my ignorance here Saying all this, I felt it got worse as it went on and I was thoroughly bored of it by the end....2.5
This was yet another fine enough jazz album but I'm really starting to get fatigue from jazz just like I got fatigue from punk. It also doesn't help that I had a really shitty day today and ended it with this lame album.
Jazz is never going to be it for me but this was solid
Struggle with jazz overall. Not sure I'd listen to this again
I mean…no
# 38 : Probably alright if you're into slow trumpet jazz. I am not. Maseru was a bit of alright.
Some funky shit on here, but 10 tracks over 70 mins is a big ask.
Shite
The toy story guy singing country tropes with the support of a big band. I am definitely not jamming to this.
Pleasant enough, but it's a no.
Jazz. No. Enough already.
