Reviews (page 8 of 8)

Didn’t watch the movie, so probably missing what makes this album good

maybe if i had seen the movie ... i havn't ...

There is some really cool atmospheric music on Air's "Virgin Suicides" soundtrack. But its too much. And it lacks context. In the film, these tracks are backing to scenes that benefit from that musical vibe. And, I'm assuming, the tracks are not played in their entirety as they are on this album. If you really love the music, then I guess you might enjoy hearing the full songs. But I was just left feeling like I was only getting part of the experience, missing the piece that was the images on screen. The 1001 features other soundtracks, but sticking with soundtracks by a single artist and avoiding compilations. But Air's contribution is more of an original score, whereas those other soundtracks are not. If we are including movie scores on the list, why is this the only one?

I am glad I waited a few days to rate this. I am flummoxed by the high reviews. Very few of these songs feel like stand-alone tracks, it feels like a collection of sounds that accompany and play a supporting role to a visual medium I can't see. I don't hate the general feel or sound but something is definitely missing (it doesn't even feel that emotional to me, perhaps because the visuals are adding that piece of the puzzle). It's funny we got Nine Inch Nails two days after this because I am no NIN fan but that album feels MUCH more cinematic to me. Instead of missing a piece of the puzzle, I can almost see a movie playing in my head during large chunks of the NIN album. Not so with Air. Ambient music is weird to me. How am I supposed to get invested in something that is purposefully so chill and designed not to grab your attention?

This started positively with Playground Love. But then it just drifted. I think I wanted more vocals and less background music. But soundtracks are all about background music. It sounded pretty timeless. This could quite easily have been released in 1972 as a companion piece for Tubular Bells. It might have helped if I was familiar with the film. In the end I made up my own story as the soundtrack progressed. The plot of a mass shooting at a popular 1980's megastore brand wasn't the brightest of plots.

Sounds like some guys who wanted to emulate Pink Floyd but neither of them could play Guitar nor sing

Weird but good

I just found this a bit nothing, Sunday afternoon drift music. Not sure a soundtrack, especially this soundtrack deserves to be in the list. Air are pleasant enough but they don't exactly blow my mind.

I really ought to watch this film. 'Playground Love' is a great song and I had the CD single. The rest of this album is superfluous.

First soundtrack I got on the list, which made me intrigued. But since I have not seen the movie I did not care for the album much at all

it's a movie soundtrack that's for sure worth the listen but won't come back

The music is pretty enough but felt like background stuff.

I wonder where this ranks on the overall list of albums and how this could get on the list. I'm wondering if there will be other scores on this list. It's fine to listen to but I might be bored. I also don't know much about this band. I think my favorite song from this right now is highschool lover. I liked dead bodies too.

Sadly not even close to Moon Safari.. or anything else by Air for that matter. Definitely an outlier in their discography. An interesting listen, but when I think Air I definitely don't think "psychological drama about child suicide".

Another miss fire from the list. This list could nearly be called the almost 1001 albums. Air Moon Safari is the album to choose

This is a good soundtrack but I don’t get why it’s on here. Especially as there’s another Air album on here.

Melkosia levyjä päätynyt listoille

Kuuntelin ehkä väärällä heetkellä ku ei ookein kolissut tyylikkyydestä huolimatta

As a soundtrack, it's very good. As something to sit down and listen, it's better as background noise. Worth a listen, once. Didn't add.

background music

With the exception of the 'Histoire de Melody Neslon' homage, Playground Love, this is just a good(ish) soundtrack to a passable film - one that people attribute more depth to because, suicide I guess, and the Coppola last name. There's some nice proggy stuff in there, and some lovely synths, but ultimately it's a film soundtrack that has been stripped from the accompanying images. Not especially exciting that way - sometimes they can be, this isn't one of those times.

I made it all the way though!! I guess it works as a soundtrack and decent background music but it general its a bit boring. There other work is more interesting.

I like Air, but this is no Moon Safari. Atmospheric go to sleep music. Maybe good as a movie soundtrack but not as a stand alone record.

Very strange album. Good background music with some cool drum fills in there. Altogether not a bad album but it is forgettable. Probably won’t listen to again.

You can tell it makes a great soundtrack, but a tad dull for just listening to. Good music though!

This was a weird one that I don't need to hear again. I wonder if see the movie would have changed my opinion but as a standalone album I didn't think it was very good.

As far as movie soundtracks go, it’s no Hans Zimmer.

There wasn't much to grasp onto in all of these tracks. It wasn't bad, just not memorable.

Meh, not bad

This is a soundtrack album by the electronic music duo Air for the 1999 film The Virgin Suicides. The album does a great job of capturing the "soundtrack" of youth. The music is nostalgic, but eerie as well as relaxing; an ever-present reminder that time flows on and what is a problem now will not last forever. Interestingly, the album was produced quickly and Air initially wanted the music to seamlessly match the scenes in the film, but in the end they decided they wanted songs that could be listened on their own. I enjoyed the chill atmospheric music present on this album. This album has peaked my interest in searching for similar types of music, as well as got me curious about the movie. We need more custom soundtracks created for movies going forward!

It wasn't that this album was terrible it was the fact it wasn't moon safari or anywhere near.

Favourite: playground love,dead bodies

The rhythm of the guitar riff on Clouds Up is the same as the chorus of 50 Cent's In da Club. Once you realize that, this album is 50% more fun. Best track: Highschool Lover

An OST. Pretty Meh.

remember liking this when it came out but its pretty poor for air. 2

It was better than most electronic albums I've heard. But that isn't saying much.

01/05/2022

Boring

This music belongs on the Gran Turismo franchise it’s got that chill vibe about it, with Sax and other instruments added throughout. I can just imagine finishing a race on GT4 and hearing one of these tracks as I return to the Main Menu. Would maybe listen to Highschool Lover, but that’s probs about it.

Good atmospheric album, never seen or heard of the film, if I had I might have enjoyed it more.

Good instrumental songs, the first song in the album is truly good, the rest is listenable, but very tedious.

I haven’t seen the movie so idk the context but it kinda sounds depressing or like something bad is gonna happen. But I would I probably feel it more if I knew the story

I like this movie, but the soundtrack did not make me feel any kind of way.

Never seen movie, so that might not help, but pretty boring instrumental soundtrack. Good for film maybe, but boring for listening to on its own.

About as boring as the movie.

Not for me

Getting better with more listens but not exactly what I’m looking for

What an out of the blue recommendation. It was ok I guess, relaxed, but nothing special. I imagine some of the significance has to do with the movie? The last song with the voiceover is pretty dope and has inspired me to give the book a read.

Slow, lush, and ponderous. Didn't grab me.

Cool atmosphere, not bad work listening. Probably works great with the movie, don't really care for it much on its own Saved: Playground Love, Dirty Trip*

It wasn’t anything special. Soundtrack album that was mostly instrumentals. The sound was quite interesting and ominous and one song reminded me of a tame impala voice over. But it still wasn’t that great. 3.8/10

There's really nothing here. I assume it worked as a soundtrack but not interested as a stand alone album.

It’s a soundtrack of background music

Meh. Psychedelic soundtrack.

tell me why i don’t hate this. however songs like word hurricane are a lil much, but this kinda gives me main character vibes lol. also it reminds me of the twin peaks sound track which is off a plus. however she do be trying a lil too hard for me. i fell asleep listening to this

Overrated soundtrack for an overrated movie. BT: Playground Love, Highschool Lover, Dead Bodies

Quite enjoyed the first track but a lot of the album felt quite flat.

Not a huge fan.

Why this album and not Moon Safari??

Did not really like it. It was mellow

Maybe one song held up on it's own but as a whole it was so dark and the last song really spooked me/got to my bad feelings :( Maybe goes well with the movie, but wouldn't keep it on the list. 2 stars because production was p good but boring

Bored, good as ambient music in a waiting room.

Couldn’t listen to the full album because ours more on YouTube music

Hard to listen on a Friday end of the sprint... Low energy...

It was fine. Didn't really grab me.

Great Movie...Meh Soundtrack. I Liked the voiced interludes that painted scenes of the movies but other than that I found it mostly mediocre and boring

Just a less good Daft Punk. Too mellow for me.

Clouds Up is my jam. Otherwise ethereal.

Airin muita levyjä tuli fanitettua joskus nuoruudessa. Tähän levyyn jäi tutustumatta, kenties koska en ottanut leffan soundtrackia vakavasti heidän ”omiin” levyihin verrattuna. Taso jääkin kauas esim Moon Safarista tai 10000hz Legendista. Ehkä vaatisi elokuvan mukaan katsottavaksi jotta tunnelmaa osaisi enemmän arvostaa.

instrumental background noise

Not for me.

Soundtrack, instrumentalt, roligt, følelsesladet

Not for me

I’d rate this 0 if I could. Every song when it started sounded like the previous, it had nothing going for it whatsoever. Incredibly boring and tedious

Plinky plonky, there's a donkey. Zzzzz.

Music to listen to in the background whilst you mope.

The last song was good, the rest was just meh.

Lounge music and if this was playing in the lounge I'd move to a different lounge.

no es mi estilo lento

Thin, inconseqential soundtrack album that's woefully short on substance. (Any idiot can lay down four synthesizer chords in a loop.) Lacks any of the color and personality that contemporanous film scores like Philip Glass' *The Hours* or Thomas Newman's *American Beauty* have.

I see absolutely NO reason for this album to be on this list. P.S. I HATE the movie.

Why is this nonsense on the list? That hurricane song legit made me angry.

It's true that I've never been a 13 year old girl. It's also true that I regret having listened to this album.

Snooze fest. 1 star

the movie wasn't that rememberable, I surely didn't need to listen to the soundtrack before I died.

Yaaaa didn’t enjoy this one. I think I’m over these instrumental albums 🤣 just not for me. Kind of creepy to listen to (which is the point, to be fair, I assume)

Sophia Coppola is the definition of nepo baby. Her films are self indulgent, artless and tin eared. You notice that the films get oscar buzz and then fade quickly. Lost in translation, a borderline racist, ‘white peple are better than Japanese people who are small weird and funny if you’re a rich white person’ has a cultural memory. Nothing else does. Her Priscilla film has disappeared already. Speaking of tineared and artless here’s the soundtrack to another forgotten Sofia Coppola film. Now I’ll be fair you often need the visuals to fully appreciate a soundtrack. But in this case, you don’t. It’s crap. Not even a must miss. If this was 3.5 billion albums you must hear before you die I’d question its inclusion. 0 stars.

Couldn’t help noticing that this sounds like the outtakes from a bad Nine Inch Nails or Cure album ( but I don’t think there are any of those). Not one single memorable song, nor any melody worth mentioning. I don’t mind gloomy atmospheric music, but this never feels like there’s a point in listening to. Is that the message here? I don’t know, in fact, I don’t care. 1 unsatisfied star

Almost put me to sleep

Probably really cool if you're actually watching the movie, but as an album this is highly unremarkable

Snooze fest

What is this tripe doing on the list?

Like some Ibiza chill compilation.

Why?..

Soundtrack, alright. What next? Random sounds from a videogame?

HATE when songs have no singing at all.

yeah, nah

I just didn’t care for it. Didn’t move me to any newfound interest in this band.

Its good the listen while doing something or to just let the time pass. Otherwise, its just a generic ambient.

Soundtracks are rarely great without the moving pictures. Perhaps this one works for the film. It is otherwise very meh

Soulless muzak

I hate that crap, but the cover art was cool

It's really boring

I think this is the most annoyed I’ve been by the list author’s choice in the 45ish albums I’ve listened to so far. I have not seen the film, so without the context of the movie it was composed for, this is just a bunch of electronic xylophone noises over simple bass lines. Also, if film scores were eligible, where the hell are the likes of John Williams or Hans Zimmer? The scores for A New Hope & Interstellar are way more influential and important than whatever this electronic schlock is. 1/5

Zuhause, Heidenheim, Deutschland. Was ein Schund!

# 532 : Virgin Suicides Haven’t seen the film, and as expected, this score doesn’t quite stand on its own. Slow, dreamy, and often dull—more like background music for sleep than a compelling album. Does anyone still revisit this? Listen for: Nothing stood out Listened: 25/07/2025

Emotional, Full, Some lovely songs Overall little impact

Why is this on this list? It’s boring.

Boring, sweepy synths that work in the film but flop alone. I’m repeating myself, but this is not an album to hear before you die.

Dark, foreboding.

This wasn't for me. It's just weird ambient shit. Not actively bad, but what was the point?

Background music, boring

First listen

Maddeningly awful. What is this even doing on the list? Absolutely terrible boring electronic music, seemingly ripping off interludes from Pink Floyd. (I swear I think its the track High School Lover that directly rips off Richard Wright's piano part on Great Gig in the Sky. Cheesy drama-goth titles like Cemetary (sic) Party. Every single track was skippable.

Weird and unlistenable.

I'm sure it's a great soundtrack but it's not a great album.

That made me want to eat buckshot

This seems an odd choice to me, the score to a film I will never watch (because I read the Wikipedia synopsis after seeing Coppola’s Marie Antoinette and Priscilla and decided it would traumatise me too much). I found it all a bit samey, a bit droney and dull, but I can certainly see how it would work well in a film and a few moments reminded me of Tame Impala or something like that. I didn’t mind The Word Hurricane or Dead Bodies, but overall I just think I’ve heard many better scores and as a standalone album it really didn’t give me anything. (1.5 stars)

I resented having to waste my time listening to this. Boring and uninspired.

I guess these are songs. The drummer and bass player did their best to salvage it, but the shitty synth textures and swells do a solid job at taking attention away from the only interesting thing going on in most these "songs"

Movie Music, Just background

Yeah, I don't know why the fuck this album is included. Almost an instrumental album, the Virgin Suicides has electronic ambience that doesn't challenge the listener or create anything new. A musical like Les Misérables did way more for Broadway and music than this album did. Did this album really change how movie music was made? I don't think so. To be fair, I'd like this album okay if I listened to it outside of this context. The Virgin Suicides could be sultry or hauntingly beautiful. But I'm annoyed at its inclusion so we're going with the lowest possible score.

Oh my god this movie sucked. Not for the music, which is actually pretty decent. But I’d give money to not have to think of the movie ever again, and this album made me think of the movie.

Boring and meaningless without the film.

Must be great for the movie, but not easy to listen to

I have no idea why this album would be included on this list so 1 star or F-.

Why not a Danny Elfman soundtrack? Why not a John Williams soundtrack? Hell, why not a Henry Mancini soundtrack? Quentin Tarantino’s sound tracks are also 100% more influential than this collection of uneasy-sounding electronica, regardless of his simple collation efforts. In all honesty, I think I liked this soundtrack better when it was called the Twin Peaks soundtrack.

I listened and was bored to death. Then I read it was a soundtrack and I understand. Without the visuals of the movie this is a boring listen. Makes no sense why it is included on this list.

Why oh why?

Really not my cup of tea. Slow and boring for me.

OST? Nee!

Totally uninteresting to me. Slow moving, minimalist, background music. I don't get it. I see that it's a soundtrack... But surely a list of "must hear" albums would include music that stands up and captivates without the context of a film... Right?

Method of suicide? Dullness. They were dulled to death.

music to lose hope to

It was ok instrumental

Depressing music

This should be the final album of the project.

Not my style

blech. I skip most soundtracks for this reason right here. Boring, uninspiring, and a waste of time.

Boring.

Awful. The worst kind of "music".

Really did not like this one, would have rather listened to nothing at all. The only track that really stood out to me was Highschool Lover

Really, no!

1+ Stars (3/15)

This was weird and quiet and annoying

Ah, a movie score. Im a big fan of movie scores having quite the collection on a hard drive somewhere. Names like Basil Poledouris, John Carpenter, James Horner, Jerry Goldsmith, not to forget the legend Hans Zimmer. These are examples of people who have put out some of the most iconic movie scores in history. Sadly, this isn’t at that level, not even close. Maybe I actually need to see the film for the music to make sense, but this was rather generic and there was no track that was really memorable. As movie scores go, there are much better that I would put on this list.

A soundtrack? Really? I started this list with high hopes of expanding my music enjoyment but I can see there are some pretty huge biases involved here. Why even include soundtracks? I’ve never seen the movie this is the soundtrack to so that isn’t coloring my opinion one way or the other, but this album certainly doesn’t make me excited for the movie. I suppose the lack of lyrics makes sense given this is a backing for a movie but in my eyes (ears?) that’s a negative for an album, no matter what case.

No. .just no

Not my jam. Also I learned more about hurricanes than I expected to.

I don't understand why a film score is considered part of this list? I can see how this would set the right tone as background music for a film, but it doesn't seem like groundbreaking music/art to me. It also got pretty annoying after a while.

Hmmmm iffy

Was going for 2 star unnoticeable background noise but the last few songs really dragged out and I ended up really not enjoying it

Couldn't get into it. Didn't see movie. Music seemed mostly sad.

depressing

I tried but musical/orchestra/classical music is just not something that gets me going. It’s beautiful music, but I couldn’t sit through the whole album. Listen again: Not in this decade. I’m sure I’ll like this stuff more as I age hahaha Purchase for my collection: No Favourite Song: didn’t listen enough Worst Song: didn’t listen enough Cool album cover though!

I hate listening to movie scores. Sorry, but it's everything I hate. Music attempting to be atmospheric for very specific moments between fictional characters with made up dramas, it all feels so very TRY HARD to elicit an exacting emotional reaction… I just don't get how people can listen to it without the visual accompaniment of the actual movie. This is also heavily electronic, so I hate it even more. It's not for me. Too pompous and lacking too much context for me to care about its entire tonal point.

Score: 20 Movie soundtracks, and soundtracks in general often use leitmotifs as a way to tie every track together and the technique can be used incredibly well. Sadly here, it isn't. Nothing interesting is done to build upon the themes of the music. This does not work as a standalone album. The first track is admittedly quite nice, there is some beauty to it and it's performed well. Sadly after that it devolves into the same song over and over. I dont like the mixing at all on this, a lot of it sounds drowned out and not in an intentional way. When a song hits a nice melody it ruins it by dragging on too long. Dead bodies is also a pretty decent song on it's own but it's hard to look past the mediocre production. The final track is agonizing to get through with its obnoxious spoken word lyrics. I was begging for it to be over. Without the movie attached this is a slog to get through, and all you're left with is a shitty pysch rock album.

Man for an album called virgin suicides this ain’t heavy in the slightest

Booooring

What was the point?

Soundtrack. Ensimmäisen raidan melodia on ihan kiva, mutta biisiin vaadittaisiin vähän muutakin.

The ‘dialogue’ made me interested to see what the film was about, but the music was too indulgent / prog rockish for me.

Just a nothing album

I don't like electronic music

I don't like this music, sorry.

Not interested in the movie. Really not interested in a soundtrack. I don't want to listen to the Star Wars soundtrack, which totally added to a wonderful movie, so why would I listen to this? Yawn.

Wat saai

A soundtrack so…

Plate.

If I died and hadn’t listened to this album I’d be perfectly fine with that. Boring

Snooze

Very emo - not my thing

I like Air, Moon Safari was great but this album felt like one low note being played for an entire hour.

Beyond boring

Terrible

I was totally blown away.

Um, wtf. That was horrible. If I didn't already hate Sofia Coppola films, I would now. How is that in the 1,001 albums to listen to, unless music is really bad. What is happening in the world?!

It was the soundtrack to a film I’ve never heard of.

Just couldn't get into it at all

Leuk albummeke
