Reviews (page 6 of 8)

Pretty cool actually, interesting sounding and enjoyable

Pretty cool as an experience but I don’t think I would listen to it again

Never got into Air and never saw the movie, but I bet this was the perfect soundtrack. Makes me want to watch the movie.

Lacks the electrifying energy of their amazing album, "Moon Safari". If that one is an intricate effort made with LED lights, this one is a different effort using oil lamps. But hey, one can still make interesting, trippy shadows with it. And they certainly did so here.

Not bad. Sort of lo-fi triphop, pink floyd-y in places. Prefer instrumentals over vocals. Probably huge for teen girls in 2000. Good background album. 3.6

Meh. Not my music style

I liked it more than I thought that I would. I'll probably never listen tonit again if I'm being honest, but the experience wasn't bad at all.

Calm, quiet, exciting, and sad. This album is a flow of emotions.

Chill and lovely. Didn’t feel like it hung together much as an album given its nature as a soundtrack. But I enjoyed the vibe.

Atmospheric, quite nice

I've often wondered if the film is as bleak as it sounds. After reading the synopsis on Wikipedia it's actually even bleaker. But this isn't about the film. I love Air. Moon Safari is one of my favourite albums. I've listened to most of their other work, but for some reason I have never given this a spin. Which is really weird. It's as gorgeuous as you'd expect. Very Air. The opening track, especially, is just lovely. It's bleak and melancholy but, with underscored with their Gallic warmth and comfort. I imagine it fits the vibe of the film very well.

Movie be movin

Album is very instrumental made as a soundtrack to a movie. So it's good to put on in the background, but not really for active listening that much. Includes electronic and jazzy elements and jazz I do quite enjoy as of late. "Playground Love" is a big vibe. Album cover is also aesthtically pleasing, nice art noveau vibe. As a whole though it didn't really blow me away. Still, I wouldn't say I didn't enjoy it. Will listen again. 6/10.

Interesting hints of Pink Floyd and Radiohead rolled into one.

FAVO: Dirty trip, Suicide Underground

This is going on my regular listening and will check more by air.

There's a few good songs, especially the drums. Soft 3

Some really nice beats but others were too alternative

It’s a really good score, but it’s a score not a soundtrack

I don’t generally go in much for soundtracks, especially ones for something I haven’t seen. But I do like Air, so I went into it with an open mind. This album is pretty good, but I think I’d rather just listen to an actual Air album

It starts and ends with some phenomenal songs but most of what’s in between is pretty forgettable.

suicidally depressing end song

Good background music, but nothing really caught my ear. 5/10.

I think you must have seen the movie to really enjoy this. All in all not bad, but it didn't get me very enthousiastic.

It's oj

Okay for a soundtrack, but I wouldn't listen to it on its own.

I struggle with soundtracks as stand alone albums. A soundtrack needs the images to relate.

полальбома звучит по-космически, половина вторая - как какието треки из 70х,только без вокала Вокал есть только на одном треке, его в остальных песнях не хватает как будто. не совсем понимаю для кого и для чего этот альбом

Comes off as trying to be edgy for edgy sake. Very 2000 of them. The theremin, synth sounds, pseudo heartbeat, ending monologue are all a bit cliche of the time.

Really enjoyed this soundtrack. I have never seen the movie, however I'm leaning towards a watch at some point. 3/5

Great soundtrack, less great album. Ghost Song is cool.

6.4/10

Better than I expected background music

Very relaxing

Solid not always my cup of tea tho

Saw the movie at the cinema - it was ok, just the Picnic at Hanging Rock of the 90s - which I also thought was an ok movie but nothing super special. Same holds for the VS soundtrack. I wondered if I had appreciated this album more had it been a regular Air album, but then listened to 10,000 Hz Legend (one of my favourite albums ever), and the difference is massive. score: 7/10

Some good stuff, like the opener, but too much ripples on.

This is a hard one. I thought, after the first track, this would be a slam dunk. Unfortunately, it's just not. The album drags, the music wanders and, all in all, it's not a great active listening experience. It sounds like what it is: a soundtrack for a movie. Is it a vibe? Absolutely. It is a whole bucket of feels. But very few songs actually have melodies, let alone anything resembling a song structure. And, while that's great behind action and dialogue in a movie, it's not so great for active listening. I wanted to give this high marks, but I can't. Sadly, it only rates a middling score.

I enjoyed the music but that last summary song is dark. Probably would help if I watched the movie.

Some surprisingly ok stuff on here

Kinda strange but okay

Started well, lost its way a bit, but good background while I worked

eclectic?

Good background music

Having never seen the movie, and only reading some of the synopsis, the album feels like it captures what a slow, drawn psychological thriller, involving the minds of the feeling of being a trapped teenager. Not one of my favourite albums thus far, but can appreciate what Air have done with this one. Best: Dead Bodies Worst: Dirty Trip 2.5 stars

Solid background music but not something too exciting

I can understand why people would like this, but I don't. It reminds me of Pink Floyd. Not my taste, but it's obviously quality music. Favorite song: Empty House.

pretty good actually 3.5

Some of this I really liked, some of it not so much.

Okay. It was mostly atmospheric and kind of weird, which is just normal seeing how this is a soundtrack for a sort of depressive movie. I'm not sure why this is so highly praised. The summary for this one says "In 2019, Pitchfork placed the album at number four on their "Top 50 Best Movie Scores of All Time" list". I have absolutely no idea how this album could have made it to the top. Maybe that's why I'm not a music critic

It's funny, I was just thinking the other day about what kind of soundtrack album I might expect to see on this list. I thought that the only soundtracks that really deserve to be on here are those with a single, unified musical vision, preferably with a limited number of individual artists. In that respect, this is a successful soundtrack. It's basically an album by Air. But there are a couple of other factors I didn't consider. The album needs mostly to stand on its own without our needing to see the movie to get it (i.e., Superfly, Purple Rain, Saturday Night Fever). Also, it should make you want to see the movie, otherwise, what's the point? In that regard, this album fails. This was lovely in an unsettling way, but it was hard to get a real feel for it and it really didn't make me want to check out the movie at all. The songs are interesting and well done, but not compelling enough on their own for me to want to come back to them. I feel obviously like I would have gotten more out of this had I seen the movie, because the songs probably correspond to particular moments in the plot. Fave Songs: Playground Love, Highschool Lover, Clouds Up, Dirty Trip, Dark Messages

Actually decent but just not good enough to push the 4 mark sorry air

The Virgin Suicides soundtrack I know and love has bangers by Heart and Al Green and Todd Rundgren and Sloan and fucking Styx. None are on this version, which is just the film's score. I call that an injustice, since those pop songs are a big part of what make the movie so endlessly rewatchable. That's not to take away anything from this version of the soundtrack, which for a film score is still decent enough. I just prefer the Wilson Sisters and 10CC.

Nice album

Quite nice. I see it's from a film and now I've researched it, I'd like to see it. Even though the last track on the album gives away part of the plot and the ending.

When I saw that today's album was another from the electronica genre, my heart sank. This is a movie score for The Virgin Suicides, which was an awful movie, so I wasn't super confident that the soundtrack would be any better. I was pleasantly surprised, however. Before today, I'd never heard of Air before. They are a British duo who came out during the electronica boom of the late 90's. Their atmospheric, ambient sound made them outliers of the genre. I think this may be why I actually like them. This music, even with being mostly instrumental, was quite captivating, and really had an air (no pun intended) of melancholy, and sadness to it (probably because it is for a movie which is about a string of suicides). The heavy bass work on this album is awesome. The bass grooves are really well done, and when coupled with the simplistic organ, guitars, and theramins scattered throughout, create an interesting sound that I didn't hate. Overall, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this album. I mean, not enough to run out and buy it, or listen to it on repeat, but I wasn't rushing to shut it off like I was with most other albums in this genre. Also, average song length was around 3 minutes, and the album was only 40 minutes long, so bonus points for knowing when enough is enough, and not overstaying their welcome. Favorite songs: Playground Love (with Gordon Tracks), Dead Bodies, Clouds Up, Bathroom Girl, Word Hurricane, Highschool Lover, Empty House Least favorite songs: Dark Messages 3/5

Electronic background music. Relatively enjoyable.

A bit boring as a standalone album 2 1 Ok it picks up 3

Erie need to be in the mood for it. Interesting

Nothing to write home about but not bad either. Definitely a pretty easy listen but I don’t feel the need to come back to it. 6/10

couple of really good songs and a good album to do work to

Électro-rock ambiant. Trame sonore d'un film de Sofia Coppola. "Dirty trip" flirt avec le jazz et le funk, point culminant de l'album. L'album boucle la boucle avec un rappel mélodique du début.

This soundtrack reminds me of why I could never connect to Virgin Suicides. It sounds like what somebody thought would be a cool soundtrack rather than what would fit that movie. It still doesn't make sense to me. And listening to it now - it all sounds fine, but it doesn't take me anywhere. It feels a little aimless and fades into the background.

Love the movie, like the soundtrack. It's weird though how separate this music feels from the movie when you listen to it by itself. I guess that's a compliment in that it works on its own? Or a criticism that the music never quite melds completely with the film? Only a magic 8 ball could give us that answer. (Also, the Jimmy Smith album is pretty sweet and that cover photo is worth a million bucks.)

Pretty good, bit slow at some parts

Electronica is not my thing! But this was good ambiance for background so I will give 3 instead of 2.

This album is hard to rate due to it being a soundtrack for a movie I have never seen, since there is a lot of repetitiveness and I'm sure having context for scene setting songs and dialogue parts would heighten the enjoyment. I loved a lot of what I was hearing - really dark, chill, and moody. I think this would definitely fit better on a 1001 soundtracks list, someone please make that!!!

This was fine, but my favorite part of the album is the cover. This entry has me wondering if there are other film scores on the list. I can think of oodles that are better than this—off the top of my head, films with better soundtracks include any of the LotR films, Fight Club, Spirited Away, The Prisoner of Azkaban, Edward Scissorhands ... I could keep going, but I won't. Here's hoping we get some of those at some point.

Soundtracks are not really my thing, too much atmosphere and not enough content. Overall did like the atmosphere though

I don't know what to think about this some of the songs I found haunting and chilling the last song especially doctor you don't know what it means to be a 14-year-old girl

Highlights: "Empty House," "Clouds Up," "Bathroom Girl," "Dark Messages" Great production on interesting ensembles: huge monophonic synth sounds, sparks of acoustic strings, chimes of peaky modulation, full reverse tape, the tightest tom rolls in the universe. Lots to like. Wish there was more spooky psych out there. To overthink it, a mostly instrumental album is suitable for a po-mo-y story about projection, objectification, the dual dominance and paucity of images over text in how we make sense of modern life and others, etc. Good album!

This album is a vibe. I had no expectations, and I was pleasantly surprised.

It is a nice very atmospheric album. However, I think, besides a few cuts it is a bit bland (many chill-electronic jams fade together), definitely when you define it as one of the best albums of all time.

Mellow, ambient, but forgettable.

- Only ever heard Moon Safari before - Liked it, might have enjoyed it more if I'd seen the film - Good background music - Fav songs: Dirty Trip, Playground Love, Afternoon Sister

I thought this was better than the other album of theirs that we heard, but it’s not something I’d put on again. It sounded like the drumming was done live in the studio which sounded very cool with the electronic music on top of it.

Do you remember a few months ago we had the album that was a soundtrack to a film that didn't exist? This is a soundtrack to a film that does exist, which is an improvement on that. I was sceptical going into it - haven't seen the film, so didn't think that it would really add much. It is background music, but it's very listenable, feels like it could definitely be one of those movies where the soundtrack is front and centre. 3/5.

It is a very slippery slope, especially as we cross the halfway threshold on these albums, to have a soundtrack, and one that is a score, as the album of the day. I am a sucker for scores, and this one was really good. The problem is that I could come up with at least another 50 scores that should be on this list, and another 50, at least, soundtracks that should be on this list. They should have a whole separate 1001 Soundtracks to listen to before you die that includes scores, soundtracks, and things like forest and weather sounds. Sadly, I hope we never see another soundtrack on this list because it would be a shame to include ones like this and not such famous ones as Lord of the Rings, Interstellar, Star Wars, Black Panther, The Mummy, Guardians of the Galaxy, Master of Disguise, MacGruber...you see where I am going with this.

A movie score feels like cheating, right? In any case, why this one over something from John Williams, like Star Wars? Is that too pedestrian to say? Anyway, it's actually a really good score. We had another album from Air a ways back, and that fact alone made me guess they were British, but they're French. In that case, ooh la la. I honestly can't remember if I've seen this movie, I'm pretty sure I haven't and the title is making me think of "Picnic at Hanging Rock." But this score is pretty rad, there's some great tunes on here. Granted, I think any instrumental/score would be relatively rad, so I'm not going to inflate the score on this one. Again, feels like cheating. Favorite tracks: Bathroom Girl, Dark Messages, Dirty Trip, Afternoon Sister, Dead Bodies. Album art: Really like the cover, suggestive of something much older, another reason why I think my mind when to "Picnic at Hanging Rock." Nice picture, nice colors. 3.5/5

I like Air, but this album doesn't do it for me. Maybe it helps if you have seen the movie, which I did not. 3/5

This was a bit of a strange one - I'm not sure how I feel about it being on the list. On the one hand, it's a fantastic soundtrack to a fantastic film. On the other hand, it also sounds VERY like a soundtrack and not really like a standalone album. There's also a piano piece that sounds far too close to "The Great Gig in the Sky", to my ears.

Pretty but also pretty boring

ganska mysigt. som en liten kopp med romglögg.

Another band I haven't really given the focus to that I think I should have so this was a really cool listen. I haven't seen the movie but even just as an album it works pretty well. Very melancholy and ambient. The pitch-shifted spoken word bits don't really fit when listening to it as an album though.

Rock progresivo. Ni fu ni fa.

I like it in the context of the movie but can't see myself just listening to it again.

A good electro-soundtrack. Sounds like the music of virgin suicide. A predecessor to The Social Network soundtrack as it's also comprised of electronic and instrumental elements.

I think this album is very effective as a soundtrack to the film, and creates an eerie melancholic mood.

Chill vibes that may be a little too ethereal. Moon Safari was right there, people.

Relaxing

Indistinct and forgettable, a step down from Moon Safari. The final track using the film dialogue was distracting, dimming the album's appeal as even ambient listening. Unclear why this would be on the list.

Ideasta Teksti Tekstistä Kirja Kirjasta Elokuvasta Musiikki ja sitä pitäis arvostella??? Jahas.. Taidanpa antaa yhden tähden... Laitankin kolme.... hyvä soundtrakki..

I like Air and hadn’t heard this album. Probably because it’s a movie soundtrack and some of the songs have monologues which is reducing its rating by a star.

An enjoyable listen, just think I'm lacking some context here by going in cold without having seen the film. Sounds more like ambient covers of Air than their usual personality-filled work, but again I'm lacking the extra oomph that comes from seeing these tracked alongside the film.

Soundtrack, so a little bit slow

Enjoyable album mostly instrumental

Cool sounds. Evocative in a way that fulfills the mission to be both a film score and a standalone album.

Air is always pleasant to listen to but attention drops sometimes, a 3

Pretty good, but got a bit bored towards the end.

Air is a nice band, generally speaking. And this soundtrack displays some of their skills in quite effective ways. Then again, two decades later, this work is maybe a little too anecdoctical to be included in a list of 1001 *essential* albums. I wonder if *Moon Safari* is on Dimery's list. Now that's a somewhat groundbreaking album that had some relevant impact at the time. *Maybe* this one could be included in my own list... Number of albums left to review: 766 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 117 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 57 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): 60 (including this one)

Favorite song: Playground Love

ihan kiva.. instrumental albumi VARMAAN TOIMISI PAREMMIN JOS KATSOISIN ELO KUVAN... MUTTA ENPÄ KATSO EN... viimeinen osa rupes vituttaa... joojoo kiva että puhut tarinaa ja VITTU OO HILJAA... OO HILJAA... ghost song top....

Mostly new music but gives me a creepy vibe the movie might need to be watched less of a complete meh

Very atmospheric and an interesting listen

Again, I don't think soundtracks should be on this list. You're only getting half of the artist's intended effect by listening to "songs" that were written to accompany something visual. But, based solely on listening, this is pretty cool. It almost makes me want to watch the movie - even though I won't because I heard it doesn't do justice to the book (which I haven't read). :)

Weird that the first song had lyrics and everything else was synth, but still interesting.

I had shit to say about NIN but this interface is stupid so fuck off Virgin Suicides.

Never heard of the movie but this was really good, I can imagine changing it to a 4 if I listen to it a bit more.

2 220921

Completely unnecessary inclusion, yet again from the contributors.

Surprisingly good. Very chill (except for the last track obviously)

I’m generally a little dubious of soundtracks as albums. Mostly didn’t really read for me as songs as such, what did wasn’t really my thing, and mostly just faded into a weird background texture.

Couldn't get into it. Too dour for this time in my life, but I recognize that it's a very good album.

Electrónica, rock. Ecléctico.

Very chill and rhythmic. Would be good listening late at night with a drink in hand.

Air - Virgin Suicides (2000) Proper chilled out soundtrack, in an unmistakably electro French way. All very nice to listen to, but my highlight is “dead bodies”, which is like a 70s car chase. Forgot how much I really like that song. Soundtracks aren’t for me though, maybe I need to watch the film.

Kinda reminded me of flaming lips. Mellow

Not at all like most stuff I listen to, but most of the tracks were pretty cool. Any songs with lyrics or voiceovers severely detracted from the album as a whole though. Favorite track: Dirty Trip

Euro electronic—apparently a movie sound track—not bad, okay background music

I like Air, but this album has always seemed empty in comparison to their others. It makes sense - this is a soundtrack to a move. It's MEANT to be in the background.

This is not not a soundtrack, which biases me against it from the start in some sense. On the other hand, it's a necessary antecedent for something like the Xiu Xiu Twin Peaks project; The vibes are clear, in moments intentionally left incomplete. Back on that first hand, the concluding narrative is helpful as it is jarring.

This is a film soundtrack so the music is there to set a mood and frame the action. Essentially, this is music that is designed to accompany something as well as be listened to on its own. Perhaps it's because of this that this album doesn't really stand out to me in any way. The music is pleasant, and I enjoyed it, but there was nothing in particular that grabbed me.

Great music, haven't seen the movie. No real standout tracks but also no tracks that I feel like skipping. Really enjoyed Ghost Song. I think Playground Love would be better lyric-less. 3/5

Had some moments that were a little Pink Floyd-esque in the vibe. A little psych-ey. Not my speed overall but can see the appeal to some.

musica ambiental

Har aldri latt meg fanga heilt av Air, til tross for min forkjærlighet for fransk synth

Big fan of Moon Safari so had some hope for this. It is quite pleasing but it is a film soundtrack..so is incomplete without the visuals. Should it be here? Anyway there are some pleasing (repeated) themes but can't give it more than a 3.

Pretty mellow. Good vibes. Could listen again.

Can't rate it without seeing the movie....

Very nice soundtrack that truly suited the ambience and vibe of the movie. Favourite song is Playground Love, and I also really liked Bathroom Girl and Highschool Lover.

Interessante mas não pra uma listA dessas sipa

Por ainda não ter visto o filme, eu não considerei tão interessante como outros álbuns deles que já escutei.

Interesting to get a soundtrack. I liked the hook used in the electronic tracks and the last track is a cool sounding summary of the story.

I liked this, cool and a bit weird. Just didn't 100% vibe with it

Merely scratch the surface of their postmodern technique of layering kitschy and retro sounds. Again a repeat of Pink Floyd-ish instrumental tracks. (6/10) FT: Ghost Song, Playground Love, Highschool Lover

Not much to say, this was a very enjoyable soundtrack. Favourites: "Playground Love", "Dirty Trip", "Highschool Lover"

It's fine for background music. I find it strange to have this on a "must-hear" list. "Empty House" is a great track, though.

Kinda cool, bit different, not super memorable

It was nice to have on as background noise. Nothing really notable about it, but Dead Bodies. If the rest of the album had that energy, it would require another listen.

I need to find another word than “fine” for albums that are just “fine.” Obvious Beatles influences (and a few more rip-offs, than homages) and overall is not completely unenjoyable. But there’s nothing that’s going to bring me back to it, either, and I’m not sure why it’s on the list.

didn't make me suicidal but didn't make me too happy about living either.

Was ok. Some of the songs had a good groove. Might have helped to have seen the movie.

Background for sure-

Upon seeing the album art, somehow I thought it was going to be a sort of alternative rock album. I was pleasantly surprised when the first song almost made it feel like I was floating. They carry an interesting melancholy/ominous feeling, and while I've never seen the movie, the music seems to match the subject matter quite well. I liked the combination of guitar and light synths that carry most of the album. My favourite tracks were playground love, the word hurricane and highschool lover. Definitely a unique soundtrack that makes me more interested in checking out the film, despite my general lack of enjoyment for virgins suiciding. 7/10

Enjoyable background music

OK background music, mothing special though

I didn't expect to enjoy this album, based on the subject matter (I haven't seen the movie but did read a synopsis), but I kind of did. Very atmospheric and the kind of music that, other than a few pieces of film narration, would be good background for working or leisure, depending on the activity. I don't know if I could enjoy it the same way if I had seen the movie, because it's a triggering subject for me, and the plot was still occasionally distracting as I listened because I had read about it, but as it was I found it an enjoyable and almost relaxing listen.

Solid score and soundtrack to a great film. Love the atmosphere of this one!

Always enjoyed this one

Weirdly, I've seen this movie before. I was young, had access to Netflix (the movie-mail version), and heard this movie was good? I remember nothing about it, aside from... just about everything going over my head. I do remember finding out about it through Air doing the soundtrack, which was a band I did (not) listen to at the time. So... yeah, I was a weird kid. This record is nice, but I think the problem is that it's supposed to compliment scenes in films. While it's good, it's background music. It's very Pink Floyd in their "Dark Side of the Moon" era-influenced. Favorite track: "The Word Hurricane"

A nice relaxing jaunt.

“The Virgin Suicides” arrived in 1999 as Air’s accompaniment to the deeply troubling film of the same name by Sofia Coppola (I read the plot summary on Wikipedia so you don’t have to). In my review of the sublime “Moon Safari”, I praised Air as the direction Pink Floyd could have taken their sound in the 90’s. If “Moon Safari” was Air’s “Meddle” in its style and serenity, this is perhaps their “More” or “Obscured by Clouds”: a mostly instrumental set somewhat diminished by nature of serving as a soundtrack, but a very listenable run of tracks nonetheless. The music itself is mellow, haunting and sometimes beautiful. Straight away in “Playground Love”, we get a wistful, entrancing vocal melody (sadly the only one here) that snakes its way round a complex chord progression. The rest of the tracks follow suit: all gentle and lilting with a heavy reliance on analogue synthesisers, and a few choice aggressive movements that stick out like sore thumbs: the astonishing climax of “The Word Hurricane”, or the frantic, one-note, piano-drum combo in “Dead Bodies”. As it all unfolds, there’s a palpable influence of more than Floyd here: the album’s sound seems indebted to concept pieces and prog bands of the 70’s. “Afternoon Sister” sounds like something straight out of Camel’s “The Snow Goose”, while there’s King Crimson-esque Mellotron galore right from the opening seconds of “Playground Love”. Other hallmarks include rich, sustained lead guitar, and simplistic interplay between the bass and drums recalling… actually, Pink Floyd again. Similarly, much like any other soundtrack or concept album, themes are revisited and revised. “Playground Love” is given a sparse piano-led reworking in “Highschool Lover”… the funereal organ refrain introduced in “Bathroom Girl” shows up again in “Cemetary Party”* and “Afternoon Sister”… “Ghost Song” is the eerie younger sibling of “Dirty Trip”‘s freewheeling jam. It gives a nice cohesive feel, though it’s a shame most of the tracks here are under three minutes (also perhaps a result of their purpose as a soundtrack). While this helps keep the pace moving, it also doesn’t allow many of them to settle in or develop past a single motif (“Dark Messages” and “Ghost Song” don’t really feel like they get going). When the longer jams come along (“Dirty Trip” and “Suicide Underground”, with its cringey low-pitched monologue launching into another sentence every time you think it’s over) it feels satisfying to have more breathing room to allow the spacious instrumentals to truly expand. On the whole, the album is an accomplished effort and dreamy half hour of music, if not as accomplished or diverse as Air’s other work. *Interesting note of trivia: this is the second album I’ve had of 125 to misspell “Cemetery” in the track listing (after “The Queen Is Dead”- both done in different ways). GET IT TOGETHER GUYS!

Pretty good, makes me want to watch the movie!

Trilha sonora linda, é exatamente o que eu precisava hoje, principalmente no dia de São Valentim haha

Great ambient background music.

Dark messages has a sound bath type vibe to it. Whole album feels like a soundtrack or score to a movie (JUST REALIZED THEY ACTUALLY DID THE VIRGIN SUICIDES SCORE DUH). Playground Love is the only familiar one to me, but I like that track. The album gets more haunting as it progresses. Empty house is a track I want to listen to when I'm reading a spooky story.

kinda sadge

Buen disco

Just chillin

Air deserve to be on this list, but a film score is an odd choice, no? I mean, I can see why they'd be chosen to score a film... Their dreamy/creepy atmospherics sure do sound like they could be in a film... But I haven't seen The Virgin Suicides so I can't know for sure how well these tunes work in that setting. In album form they're kinda interesting but don't seem like a must-hear. I'll give it a middling 2.5/3, BUT my interest has been piqued to go and watch the film ASAP. Once I've done that I reserve the right to adjust my score accordingly...

Nice and chilled. I wouldn't have been interested in this a few years ago but my tastes are apparently changing! The spoken word track was a bit distracting though

Eclectic collection of melancholy instrumental tracks that served as the soundtrack for the movie of the same name. Flows nicely, but it's nothing I would listen to more than a few times. 3/5

As I feel about most ambient music, it was fine but mostly felt like background muzak. Some songs were more interesting than others. 3 stars.

Enjoyed some tracks a lot but not sure if listen through the whole album again

It's OK. It has made me want to watch the film at least!

Great air album - prefer moon safari though

Pretty solid, lots to like here but not much really stood out to me. Might come back to listen again but it wouldn't be my first choice to pick at random and play. 3.5/5

I was hoping for Moon Safari, but you can't go wrong with Air. All the tracks sound good, establishing Air as the forefront of downtempo. Being a soundtrack is definitely holding me back, most of the tracks don't end up going anywhere and feel kinda incomplete. Even crazier tracks like "The Word Hurricane" felt like there was supposed to be more. The soundtrack certainly evokes a range of emotions that I wish I could see the film for more context. If I'm not crazy, I'm noticing some themes being repeated, but it's a tad bit hard to tell. But despite that, the premises interest me as long as I'm paying attention, with my favorite songs being where the drumming comes in.

I enjoyed this, but it didn't really flip my switch. I have a feeling it's the kind of thing that might be more suited to a specific mood and for me it ended up being more background music as I listened to it.

Nice electronic album supporting the film like a soundtrack should do. It does not contain any remarkable songs apart from Playground Love.

Du bon electro franchement. Un pu eclate par moment . 4.95

i've always kinda loved air. by which i mean, a few of their tracks absolutely floor me, and the rest i tend to find kinda meh. sooo...on i guess average, i _kinda_ love them. this album does nothing to change that. it falls, for me, solidly in the "y'know, fine" category. easy to have on but, to my ears, not in any way really outstanding.

Establishes a hypnotic quality which I dare say would be amplified if I knew the movie. I might check it out.

vibey to the point of anxiety hahah. maybe i should give it another listen when i'm more relaxed

Instrumental, movie soundtrack

Atmospheric, moody, beautiful and almost wistful. Pace changes and themes keep it interesting. A soundtrack that works well as a standalone LP. Play in background at party to subtly raise guest paranoia.

Achieves the goal, reaches the feelings. Cheesy at times, peak 2000s synth ballads. Somewhat repetitive but that's to be expected with a score

Not the album that Air should be remembered for (I'd argue there are 3 far better ones). I guess the core difference lies with this one being a movie soundtrack rather than an independent piece of music, but regardless: this is a rather peculiar choice for this list.

Air doing their Air thing! Fav new track: Suicide Underground

Not usually hot on film scores but this is different, the lyrical Jazz of "Playground Love" starts this off wonderfully. Interesting to note that it is rumored that Thomas Mars lead singer with Phoenix is lead vocalist "Gordon Tracks" on Playground Love, which makes sense as he later married Sophie Coppola! Some ambient tunes so I wasn't overawed but I found it entertaining. "Suicide Underground" and "Playground Love" the standout tracks for me.

Interesting listen. Good album, not great for running. 😃

Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Highschool Lover, Afternoon Sister, Empty House, Dead Bodies, Suicide Underground Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: ?? Don't see what all the hubbub is about. Good but standard light atmospheric soundtrack music that closes strong. I'm sure it's better when you've seen the movie, but I don't remember this being Letterboxd. Should've been the Daft Punk Tron Legacy soundtrack imo

The only way this should be ahead of Moon Safari is because it marks itself out by being a film soundtrack. Still having said that, I do love Air. Remember seeing them at Brixton Academy back in the day and it being a great live experience too

Nice soundtrack. 3.5/5.

passed me by this one. soundtrack albums are often lacking without the imagery that goes with it. you can tell its conjuring up an atmosphere or a feeling but without the images its a bit lost.

Oh suicidal virgins, my favourites. I once groomed this teenager online and when I finally persuaded them to meet me, they saw I was a washed up former footballer and ran away. They later shot themselves on Facebook live. What a thrill.

The album is driving saucier instrumentations through the speakers. Some very good tunes, a little slow in some places

A nice change

Als Soundtrack sicher schön

Wish I could give this a 3.5.

This is a soundtrack album, pretty interesting. Took me on a journey having it in the background with a quite intense finale song, narrating the story from the film

This was a good album. Very chill and relaxed. It would make for nice dinner music, as a matter of fact of added It to my dinner party mix. A solid 3.5 🌟

Playground Love is goodski. Hearing the story in Suicide Underground was cool.

Toffe listen voor achtergrond

Never listened to this before despite liking air... love playground love and otherwise it’s just a nice instrumental reminder of their best stuff.

it was pretty good! I like air's other albums more, though.

Electronic, synth pop. Mellow and chill with a few songs that build up rather nicely. Mostly instrumental but some great vocals as well. Great Sunday afternoon music. 2.5/5

6.5/10

Glad this project introduced me to this band and this soundtrack (I read up on the film for which it was scored, which I had not heard of before, too). I like some of the work on this album, which is outside the norm of what I typically enjoy.

Odd album, an interesting listen, but difficult to place on a scale, as the songs vary as much as they do. 3/5?

Weird, but in a good way

Very backgroundy, which makes sense as its a soundtrack. I definitely liked it, didn't love it. Kind of makes me want to see the movie

Good background music, nothing more.

I listened to it. I just don’t remember it.

Just OK.

Je ne m’attendais pas à cette proposition là. Je vais être généreux avec un 3 étoiles. C’est bon mais jamais j’écouterais ça dans mon auto.

Interesting. I enjoyed the music. ***

This was kind of an unexpected surprise. I really enjoyed the variations on a theme throughout the album. The subtle changes to those thematic elements gave them each a unique mood that I'm sure tied to the relative scene in the movie. Good stuff.

Lukioaikoina pari kaveria fiilistelivät Airia, mutta itse en sen hienoutta tuolloin ymmärtänyt, enkä vieläkään ymmärrä. Leppoisaa mollikasta taustamusaa tämä on. Konseptina tietty tällainen yhden bändin soundtrack-albumi on jännä, mutta siinä sarjassa esim Yann Tiersenin Amelie-soundtrack on ihan omaa luokkaansa. Ja ehkä Belle & Sebastianin Storytelling-levykin keulii tästä etupyörän mitalla ohi. Sofia Coppola- ja nuoruusmuistoilla kuitenkin kolmonen.

The proper songs are neat, but there are obvious songs used for scene-setting in the film that don't necessarily translate to a great standalone listening experience, and it ends up feeling like Lidl Pink Floyd. Still overall enjoyable, 3/5

This is nice. Compared to their other albums I'm familiar with, it's more subdued and background-y (like a movie soundtrack). Though I can play Dead Bodies over and over again!

nice vibes, mostly instrumentals

Depressing, but good work focus music

It's weird and enjoyable, but Air certainly has better albums.

This starts out great with Playground Love, it imbues such a languid chill-out mood, but then it kinda drifts off into a pretty typical movie score. The soundtrack to this movie is actually much better with classics by 10CC, Todd Rundgren, Al Green, and Sloan. Lovely film too.

Not as good as their soundtrack to Lost in Translation

pfffffff

I like this one a bit. It's mostly instrumental atmospheric stuff, with some vocals here and there. The song "Dead Bodies" has some great drums. Still not a "must add to my library" album, though.

First time there has been a movie soundtrack on here, interesting. End result seems to be more instrumental-only tracks. They all seem to have a unifying musical theme and are "unobtrusive", though it's hard to put into words. I think I might have guessed this was a soundtrack as a result. Overall very pleasant background listening music.

Album solido, ottimo per accompagnare una qualunque attività.

Bueno para escucharlo mientras se hacen otras cosas, fue entretenido

it is, and sounds like a movie soundtrack so good job i guess

i like air but this movie is overrated and the album seems silly as a standalone listen. the last track is straight-up bad

uhhh.....lush sounding but not overwhelming....gets better as it progresses. Like the psychedelic flourishes in the Word Hurricane.

Belle atmosfere, l'album é molto di accompagnamento, ed essendo una colonna sonora é comprensibile. Trasmette un senso di sospensione, di allontanamento dalla musica stessa.

Good atmospheric music to put on the background if doing other things

Het album heeft een goede sfeer maar het instrumentarium en tempo spreekt mij niet aan.

Well made, but often very slow (not in a good way) and somewhat repetitive.

Decent mostly instrumental movie soundtrack. Not as great as Interstellar or LotR, but acceptable.

Trippy

Ist...okay, aber kein Bringer. Ich finde kaum Gründe, diese Platte noch mal zu hören.

okay for being fairly chill

bom pra estudar

not bad, good music to listen to when working

It was okay...why did they try to sound like Pink Floyd?

Never that fussed about Air. Pleasant enough background music.

It was an interesting narrative. Made me want to look into the movie (which I haven't watched). Good background music for working along to and such. Nothing too exciting, in my opinion.

Nice album, just some of the songs lacked a bit of variance.

Ambient elektronisk film score. Første nummer med vokal er godt. De andre er ok, men megrt filmiske i udtrykket, med nogle gode instrumenteringer. Nok bedre hvis man har set filmen 3.5 stjerne

bit weird but kinda cool. 3*

average

no lyrics, just love. but there is this educational monologue bit in The Word Hurricane, love that, ayaw ko lang nung ending bc it has the dental thing sound

Incidental at times... but then again it is a soundtrack. Not the air album I’d put in 1001ATHBYD! Still enjoyed it mind.

Really?

Why exactly are we putting motion picture scores on this list? It's not actively awful but I have no reason to listen to it again.

A soundtrack to a movie I haven't seen. Maybe it's great with context, but honestly this felt disjointed and I have no idea what makes this essential listening.

Great as a soundtrack, definitely sets a mood, a very very consistent mood, and it's right up my alley in terms of sound. But it's very much a soundtrack, and lacks the diversity of rhythm and instrumentation and tone of Moon Safari. I really disliked the summarizing narration in the last track (in "The Word Hurricane" too, but definitely and strongly disliked the narration in "Suicide Underground"). So, it's musically pretty good, and a really great soundtrack, sets a mood and doesn't draw much attention to itself in favor of supporting the drama onscreen, but as an album that means it's not that interesting <i>by design</>. As a album, I'd say it's a 2.5/5.

Ouch, missed Exile in Guyville. One of my all-time favorite albums. Regarding Air, might be too mellow to know what I'm hearing. Would go so far as to call it gimmicky. just not my style.

Bit dull bit same-y

I think it's difficult to rate a soundtrack album without sight of the movie. So in this case, I wouldn't rate this highly as an album.

Far inferior to moon safari

Not a patch on their first album, Moon Safari. This album was just one track really, played monotonously, no variation. I've never seen the film so I can't comment how well it fits that, but as a standalone album it's just boring.

Didn't realise it was a score. Must have been a score to something insipid. I only enjoyed Playground Love (lovely sax parts, really mellow), the rest did not tickle my fancy. Moon Safari was good, this album was a little too vague and hard to nail down.

Atmospheric, pretty in places but quite dull. Great artwork. Two stars. 1 "Playground Love" (3/5) 2 "Clouds Up" (2/5) 3 "Bathroom Girl" (2/5) 4 "Cemetary Party" (2/5) 5 "Dark Messages" (2/5) 6 "The Word 'Hurricane'" (2/5) 7 "Dirty Trip" (2/5) 8 "Highschool Lover" (theme from The Virgin Suicides) (2/5) 9 "Afternoon Sister" (2/5) 10 "Ghost Song" (2/5) 11 "Empty House" (2/5) 12 "Dead Bodies" (2/5) 13 "Suicide Underground" (2/5) Total - 27 Average - 2.08 347/1001 186/347 albums reviewed were new to me.

not very good. background electronica

Not great.

I kind of enjoy Air, but I sadly found this album completely forgettable.

One of the most boring movie soundtracks I've ever heard

Not my favorite music from Air

Jaja ni enterada qué c*rajo estaba escuchando. Un poco pretentious.

Fine listen but nothing memorable

Very interesting sound

Sound track coehisive-ness

Not into mental health as an entertainment plot device so not super excited about this movie. I haven’t seen it so maybe it would mean something different if I had. Soundtrack is cool but depressing and not the mood I want to set the tone for my day exactly. Didn’t hate but didn’t like it

Good album. Good movie.

als een vliegtuig die hoog boven je overvliegt... je weet dat er geluid is, maar het registreert niet echt

Oh, there are movie soundtracks on this list? If this is on here there better damn well be the soundtrack to Heavy Metal...just sayin'.

Hmm. Well, it wasn’t terrible. It wasn’t great. I can see how some people dig it.

Good instrumental music. Music good without vocals.

Already listened to Moon Safari. This isn't so different that it deserves a place on the list. 2/5.

Just a complete copy / paste of my review for Moon Safari by Air... and the irony of the last sentence is not lost on me. When to listen: feeling spacey and futuristic. It’s synth. It’s fun. It’s unique. But it’s also repetitive.

Listening to the score without the movie is a little weird. Like I get the impact because I can tie the songs back to the scenes, but if you've never seen The Virgin Suicides I don't know how much you'd get out of this.

HIce zapping y por lo que escuché es un OST y ya

Ho hum

i dunno

it was fine

Yet another "We don't allow soundtracks on the list, but here's a soundtrack". It's very airy and ethereal. I don't think this is an album I NEEDED to listen to. I fail to see the historical significance. My rating: 2/5

This is alright, I listened to it in the background while working and tbh I remember very little. Weird to have a soundtrack on the list, I feel like they're designed to accompany a cinematic experience and alone often feel a bit... incomplete. Especially one like this that's mostly instrumental Anyway I can't really be negative because it's nice music for what it is.

First song is superb. The rest not so much.

No standouts

Disappointing. There's so much potential in this album to have been better than Moon Safari, but I feel like that because it's made for a movie that it's held them back a bit from making it more exciting or comprehensive. They've made it into background noise, which obviously is fine for a movie, but when you're listening to it normally it sounds flat and uninspired. There are some good parts to this, and there is definitely a great album in here somewhere, but it just meanders along without making much of an impact. Maybe a harsh 2, but this could have been better without the movie.

Playground Love brought me back to driving my 1988 Dodge Omni around the roads of Upstate New York listening to WBER. Not sure I needed that bit of nostalgia.

A French rock album that was created to be a soundtrack for a movie. There’s two strikes against already. This may have been awesome as the audio aid to whatever was happening on screen, but it doesn’t stand on its own in my opinion. I (barely) got through this album and won’t be going back to that well again.

To quote Nancy Kerrigan: “Why?” A soundtrack doesn’t work as a standalone album and this one is incredibly scattershot any way you serve it up. It’s a collection of moody, redundant musical riffs that grow tiresome pretty quickly. The spoken word is not at all integrated and stands out as a startling choice anytime you let yourself sink into the vibe. The words French Electronica should have been enough of a clue that this would be a slog, but throw in the soundtrack element and this was doomed from the start.

lento aburrido pero facha

Didn’t mind listening to it but it didn’t do much for me overall

This was pretty much all instrumental, but I didn’t hate it because it was the score to a movie. I saw that movie a long time ago, so I sort of recognized some of it. The music was fine.
