Reviews (page 7 of 8)
Almost no soundtracks on this list and this mediocre crap is included? So many better options out there.
Boring.
OK I guess, but as a soundtrack it's trying to create a mood to pair with the story, and I don't know the story, so I didn't have good references for listening to this.
Didn’t like this.
A fun listen but I probably won’t seek it out again beyond the first song. I saw that movie a long time ago and did not clock the music being so good lol
Interesting, not bad. Will probably never listen to it again.
Lack of words really brought this down
2/5
I’ve never seen the movie and don’t plan on it, so I was just listening to this as a true album and not as a “score”. It was fine. Atmospheric and forgettable
2.5 (40:27, 13 tracks, 2nd Album, 2000), Electronica, dream-pop, chill, Film score Haven’t seen the movie (it’s fictional by the way) – pretty sure I should. The movie is based on neighborhood boys' accounts of trying to figure why 4 girls (‘the Lisbon girls’) committed suicide. I liked the album, dream-pop, but I don’t see why it’s part of this list. Pretty sure the movie itself gave Air a bump here. People seem to reference it mostly as 'their favorite soundtrack.' Air's Tiny Desk performance is interesting – they look pretty French. Air is a French music duo from Versailles, consisting of Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel, at NPR's tiny desk they were a trio. Their critically acclaimed debut album, Moon Safari, including the track "Sexy Boy", was an international success in 1998. Its follow-up, The Virgin Suicides, was the score to Sofia Coppola's first film The Virgin Suicides. Dunckel and Godin also released four other studio albums in the 2000s, including 10,000 Hz Legend (2001), Talkie Walkie (2004), Pocket Symphony (2007), and Love 2 (2009). In 2012, the duo released their second score Le voyage dans la lune, and soundtracked the Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille with 2014's Music for Museums. AIR might be an acronym, the band has given conflicting information about whether Air is an acronym, 'amour, imagination, and rêve'." "...which means 'love, imagination, and dreaming'." However, in a 1998 interview for Australian magazine Rave, Godin reportedly denied the claim, saying "No. Someone made that up, but it was a really nice thing to do. I wish I could have that idea." The Virgin Suicides was nominated for Best Soundtrack at the 2001 Brit Awards. According to Jean-Benoît Dunckel, the album was recorded quickly. At first the music was inspired by the film and an attempt was made to synchronize the music with scenes from the film; towards the end of the process, the intention was to craft songs which could be listened to on their own. I'm a big fan of Moon Safari, a fabulous album which would be a worthy contender for this death wish. I know Playground Love and its companion piece Highschool Lover from one of those amazing Q Magazine cds and they are great. But I've not seen the film and so much of this seems inextricably linked to the themes of the movie, so not as good as Moon Safari. Not sure why it is here....
Moody ambient background music. Unsurprisingly, the soundtrack of a movie that's not even music related does not make for a good album. I don't see why I would need to listen to this before I die.
Boring. The spoken word parts are terrible.
1.69
Eh idk about this. I wanted to like it more and I liked the soundtrack in the movie but it’s kind of annoying to listen to independently
Meh, feels like background music that I am neither called to nor interested in anything other than background, except virgin suicides the last tract which gets you from the story. Meh meh meh
Ok, definitely want to listen to more scores, not something I'd rush back to
#846. This might have been made better if I had the context of having seen the movie, but I somehow doubt it. 2/5: meh
Top Songs: Dirty Trip Dead Bodies
Kind of a novelty item for me. While it was a nice easy listen, it’s not something I would ever buy.
Incredibly moody, eerie, made me feel like I was in a dramatic unsafe setting despite just being at work. I don't think I would listen again (as this album just mostly works best as a movie score) but I think it really accomplishes what it set out to do.
Meh
I am not really sure how to feel about this album. It’s not one I would ever put on as it is essentially an album of backing tracks; however, as a soundtrack (score), it works, especially in the context of the film. (I think? I have not watched it) It did capture that dreamy/hazy/melancholic 70s vibe well, although because (again) it is a score it pretty much sounds the same the whole way through and therefore to sit and listen to the whole thing gets tedious.
Highlights: Playground Love, Bathroom Girl What can I say... It sure as hell is background music! It was weird to see that Air did the soundtrack for Virgin Suicides. Never watched the movie so I didn't know. It really didn't seem like a natural fit from what I've heard of Air. The record sounds like a basic OST - it really doesn't stand out. And I don't know if better familiarity with the movie's themes would fix my view on it, but I didn't like the experience all that much. Very repetitive and it sounds like your average mystery OST. Given the release was back in the year 2000 I am sure that this wasn't all that original either with the whole onslaught of contemporary ambient music.
First time listening to a soundtrack album and as I didn't watch the film I'm judging it just as a music album and based on that I didn't like it that much, the first song was great and that's all there is to it, I imagine the other soundtracks would work perfect in the film but just as an album it didn't really stick with me.
Effective mood music for the dreamscapey film in question. Air are craftsmen and the music reflects that. But this nowhere near a 1001 album sorry guys.
Plinky plonky plinky plonky with some terrible talking bits
Nothing wrong with it, but I don't get why this is on here. Maybe it would make more sense if I saw the movie.
I don't get why this was on the list. It was fine, but didn't feel special/essential.
Playground love and day trip is definitely the strongest. Not a big fan of instrumental songs
Very mid
Listening notes from when I listened to it are gone so this is from memory. There were a range of decent and boring songs, their was certainly an overarching mysterious, perhaps almost spooky tone to the soundtrack which felt at times 'doctor who-esque'. One of the songs had some guitar that reminded of the film 'Labyrinth'. A little odd, without having seen the film and detached from visual aids a lot felt strange and I didn't have the context of the story which I'm sure would add more to this. Not a big fan of the cover art. 48/100 (Taking 50 as an average places this above average which doesn't reflect my feelings, this number instead puts it more in line with other ratings, may need to fix that soon) Score edited 28/01/26
Interesting one to get from this list. Kind of surprised a soundtrack made it onto this list. There were some nice parts. I quite enjoyed the piano playing. But it felt a bit disjointed listening to it as an album, I think this is perhaps best enjoyed with the film itself(not that I've watched it).
Not keen on this. Not a patch on Moon Safari
I liked the first song, thought maybe this would be a nice chill album that made for good background music, but the rest got a little too experimental for me.
a whole load of humming, synths brashly placed here and there. simple but somehow incoherent???? ok too wildly underdeveloped to hold itself up. out of 13, only 3 tracks stood out to me as having even a semblance of clear melodic direction. wouldn’t come back
That is a trippy dark album. I feel like I should have been on mushrooms while listening
- achei mt parecido com pink floyd
Listen to any video game soundtrack from this era and you get the same experience
Great background musoc
Pretentious choice
Boring and inoffensive for the most part. Again I don’t feel soundtracks should be on this list. Last track literally is just narrating what happens in the movie, so I’m glad I now never have to watch it. lol
Mysterious but also not the most essential listen
I’ve never watched this film before and when looking it up, this was nowhere near the movie plot I was imagining as this soundtrack played..
When Moon Safari first came out I enjoyed some of the songs, but some were just a bit too French Electronica for me. The base is always a bit bouncy in French electronica, so even when it’s a dark song the base lifts it to a place where it shouldn’t be. In comparison, any of the soundtracks done by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have the same dark undertones, but the base reflects this. It’s not whimsy. Overall, this was just about fine. I can listen to a whole Air album because the whimsy air just does my head in. I listened to all of this and as a result my head was done in.
What the devil? Ok, I will accept the premise that instrumental soundtracks are a part of music culture. While I didn’t hate this listen, music made specifically for a movie come across as a bit unmoored without the actual movie. I suppose these kinds of albums would resonate much more strongly for massive fans of the movie. To me, it sounded alright. I really hope (and pray) that the Star Wars soundtrack is not a part of this journey.
Generally enjoyed this ‘album’, but it’s not meant to be something that stands alone. The criteria for success is how the music fits with the film/story, not as a listening experience. That’s the main reason for the two (2). Is why was this included? Would you enter an hog in a dog agility contest? Doesn’t matter how nice that swine is, it’s a different beast altogether
Music to walk out of a theater at the end of the movie. I liked the movie, but didn't feel like the soundtrack was amazing or warranted an entry on this list. It's funny how I'm getting more and more frustrated as I get further into this list. Please, please somebody change the algorithim to give me a good album this week!
Maybe it’s better in context of the movie?
It bored me but it was interesting enough to not give it a 1.
I started out with high hopes for this album, because I like ambient, atmospheric, instrumental music, and I've liked other works from this group, however this one didn't do it for me. I spent most of the time bored and hoping for the next album to start. Maybe it would make a difference if I was familiar with the movie/story?
It's not objectively bad, but didn't do anything for me. It's probably just fine as a soundtrack, but even if I had seen the movie I can't imagine wanting to listen to this album.
This was incredibly boring. 2/5
Couldn’t really get behind this one. Most of the album is slow ambient music with no words. This is what I would consider studying music. Just listening to it at face value doesn't really do much for me.
Well I figured it was bound to happen. I dont feel soundtracks should be included on this list. But I guess since this soundtrack is done by one band that counts. I do enjoy Sophia Coppola as a Director, and I did see this movie once, never read the book. I am a fan of movie soundtracks, but I feel they only work well listening as an album, if you already know the movie so well, that you can listen to thw soundtrack and imagine the scenes of the movie playing in your head. But neither the movie or the music of the film, resonated or stuck with me at the time I saw it. This wasn't all that great, even though I recognized a few tracks. So if we are including scores on this list ... I can many other soundtracks that are better and with actual composers.
Like this album but not all the movie quotes
This was fine but not very memorable
It was fine, definitely felt like what it was, background music for a movie. Not entirely sure how it made it on to this list
I've never seen this movie or heard this soundtrack, but apparently both are good? Idk. The whole thing feels like a Final Fantasy soundtrack. There's no part of this that I couldn't hear without seeing Cloud walking thru an overworld. Sephiroth in the wings at all times. This is not derogatory! I enjoyed it. But if this is one of the best film scores ever, per the critics, then damn, idk what we're doing. One of the things I do for this whole exercise is put it on in the background and see if I can tell when the first song that gets algo-generated after I finish the album comes on. I couldn't on this one. 2
Borrrrring
Not my bag
In my memory, this was a great album. Now, 25 years later, I have a different opinion. It got boring pretty quickly. I even got annoyed at some point: it just always kinda the seem thing. Maybe I am just having a bad day. 2/5
Ehhh. This was ok in parts but also mega annoying. Its a solid 2.5 I've not seen the movie, but I did give up on the book half way through. I think maybe it's just not my sort of thing 2 ⭐️
That's not my taste in music - boring
Not great
Not really my vibe, was tedious to get through.
Hmmmm, I’m just not sure a soundtrack works in the same way on this list. Sure, it’s good arrangement and background music, but feels a totally different experience to listen to it as an album. Feels like it’s missing something, and I guess that’s the picture that accompanies it. Any soundtrack albums I’ve got so far have landed a bit flat, but this maybe better than the others. And as a soundtrack, nothing particularly outstanding or interesting. So again, seems a strange selection for this list. (2.5)
To be honest, I never did quite get the hype around this project/band. I mean, it's not horrible or anything like that, but it is not absolutely stellar either. It has all the right to exist and I'm sure it'll be greatly appreciated by fans of a music style that is not mine...at all
This is a tough one to rate as an album given it wasn't written to be listened to on its own. As a result the majority of songs are really just sketches, many based on the same theme with the same mood. The opener works best as a "real" song (probably because of the vocals), though "The Word Hurricane" and a couple songs near the end also exhibit some evolution throughout. The rest mostly just build on the same melody until they end. Of course there's a reason for that, so the question is how much should my rating account for the fact you're missing something by just listening to this. In the end I'm going with a 2 because I wouldn't want to hear this again, though I can't deny that it sounds lovely and is well produced.
I hope the soundtrack to A Clockwork Orange is on this list. At least that's a great album to listen to regardless of having seen the film. Right, right? If you plan on seeing this movie, don't listen to the last song here.
Tried this. Even had it on vinyl. Freaked me out. Sold it.
Sometimed the album doesnt really Match the mood of the day.
Variations on a theme.
I didn't listen to the whole thing, I was already feeling down and this movie and soundtrack felt too depressing for where I am
Piano, soundtrack
I don't really get why this was on the list...
Need to watch with the movie
Nice but boring. Not Moon Safari!
Playground love
I didn't know this movie so have absolutely no idea what the music should accompany. I read the synopsis of the movie though. It sounds alright, but if we are allowing movie scores, the Lord of the rings should be here instead of this.
46/1001 Air - Virgin Suicides Heard before? ❎ Revisit? 🫳 As the album starts, it's really quite mellow and potentially mirrors the nature of the film (not seen so cannot judge), but as it progresses, the tension builds up - Ghost Song is particularly good. However, that start did kind of make it blend into the background. Certainly not one I would discount from re-listening to in the future.
Playground Love is really good. The rest is unfortunately boring, althoughthere were some hight, but not much.
Day582 - somehow these two goobers managed to get another album on here when one was more than enough
I did not need to listen to this before I die. The album in and of itself isn’t bad per se, but why is this on the list when there are already so many un- and underrepresented artists and genres?? Mystified.
This album sounded like a soundtrack. If I was going to listen to Air I probably wouldn’t pick to this album. Soundtracks require the reoccurrence of theme over the album which in this case, through their ethereal vibe and electronica began to blend into ambiance for me. I like their variation between on albums like Moon Safari or Walkie Talkie. Empty House was interesting with the Spaghetti Western influences to the Trance-style ambiance. Key track for me was the upbeat and operatic Dead Bodies. Again, overall it wasn’t disappointing or bad, just not a Go-To.
Überwiegend instrumental, düstere Stimmung. Erschließt sich mir nicht. 2/5
It takes a LOT to bore me but I can confidently say I was bored at many points on this record. Seriously that's really hard to do - how do you bore a guy that's a few years into an ambient music deep dive?! Clearly a soundtrack so im sure it hits way different with the movie accompaniment but that sure as hell isnt the point of this list. Nothing on here was outright bad, but nothing was memorable, especially with the consideration that Air holds at least one other spot on this list with a much more substantive album. Maybe this is a soft recommendation to watch the movie, but I won't. 2/5
like a breath of stuffy, dusty air
I'm sure it functions just fine as a film soundtrack (never seen the movie) but as an album it's just kinda nothing Fav song: Empty House
Don’t get it. Very boring. 2
Bookoooooooooooring

Ihan on tunnelmallista.
There are better Air Songs out there in my opinion.
The album has moods that go well with the movie, without that context is is rather bland. 4/10
Boring movie soundtrack
This baffles me because this group a different album in this same year and it was leagues better than this. This is so much more scattered noise while the other one was a fresh take on electronic music for the time. It gives the impression that this album is the forgotten step sibling. While I pity it, I don't love it.
May work as a score but just the album is pretty lifeless.
Some good. 2/5
how exciting, this is the first soundtrack for me on here.
The album sets a mood and it does it really well. As something to have on in the background while reading or wanting to feel a certain way is something I could see myself doing. Its not music I would listen to everyday though.
The album was okay. Not really my type of music. I think I liked their other album better. 2.5/5 Won’t listen again
Playground Love was good. Others meh.
Was pretty close to falling asleep during most of this, honestly. Not a huge fan
Dead Bodies // 1.5/5
Moody ambient music, with some passages that are brilliant and others that I don't want to hear again. High 2.5 stars
Smooth jazz movie soundtrack
An album about as substantial as the band’s name. May have been a good soundtrack, but boring as heck as a standalone musical experience.
Hey, I like the band Air as much as the next guy, but a mostly instrumental movie soundtrack from the year 2000 does not really qualify as one of the 1001 albums to listen to imo. Some songs are OK of course, but this is one of the bands weaker and more forgettable works. 2/5
I guess this was ok as a movie soundtrack, but was pretty boring in general. 2/5
Kinda boring.
This was so unmemorable that I doubted whether I actually listened to it or not. I don't remember actively hating it either though, so that deserves at least another star, right?
Simple math here: for a soundtrack, 4 stars. For a regular album, 3 stars. But why should I listen to this before I die? 2 stars. So yes: 2 stars.
Its 90's emo created by an electronic band. It seems very appropriate for the movie and would elicit deeper emotion from the storyline. Also knowing the movie's storyline it feels like this idealized version from a man's perspective of these girls' lives and experiences. Its like look at these beautiful women and how sad we never got to actually date and hook up with them. They were so perfect (except the one, no judgement Kristin!) its so sad they died and none of us were able to sleep with them (more). Did it convey that message and idea, sure probably pretty well. But also we have heard that perspective a lot. Also it was just kind of the same sounds over and over, aethereal, sad, perfect, melancholy. I would guess these girls were pissed at times, angry, and loud (Maybe this could be Dirty Trip, but then it just kept going). They were also happy at some point, enjoying the world around them, small enough moments that they knew they were missing things. As an album without the movie, it is a little too much sadness for me. In the end it was almost all just emo, so meh...
It sounds very nice. Very pretty, I think is the right word First song is actually great. After that some chill electronic tracks 7 is a nice one 8 is a beautiful acoustic track As i listen, I realize that most of the tracks here explore the same harmony sequence, witch is indeed interesting, but can get a bit repetitive at points. (Personaly, it doesn't bother me). I feel like the main thing i need here is context. And it makes sense, as it is a movie soundtrack, after all.
Filmmusik den Profis überlassen!
mildly pleasant, but a fairly minor album
Nothing special really
Chill background music. Good movie. Doesn’t belong on the list, however.
It seems the 1001 list doesn’t allow soundtracks on the list. You won’t find very significant soundtracks like The Harder They Come, The Graduate, Saturday Night Fever, Stop Making Sense, or Hamilton for that matter. Or a cult classic like the Repo Man soundtrack. If you are not a fan of electronica divorced from its cinematic context, take today as an opportunity to listen to one of those.
I haven't seen the movie. For better or worse, this means I can only truly evaluate this in terms of the music alone... which is basically ambient electronica. Of course, this is likely perfect for the film. There is so much to say about the problems of this album being on the list, but I will simply say, if this album deserves to be on this list, it should at least inspire me to see the movie. It didn't. Out of respect, I normally rate music that I don't get a 3. In protest to this soundtrack being on the list, I am giving it a 2.
From the musical duo that brought you Alone in Kyoto even though it came out afterwards! Was this even a movie soundtrack? I would kind of like to see the film knowing that this is the music setting the scenes.
Filmmusik på gränsen till muzak. Första (typ enda) låten är bra pop. Tvåa
Not my kind of music.
What was this? This could have been interesting when it was released, because of the film or whatever (even so I doubt it), but nowadays sounds like insipid, bland filling. Something that does not harm as background music, but adds no value to your life. It's somehow creepy and strange, which is OK, but dozens of acts create that environment better. Definitely not one of the best 1001 albums ever.
Decent songs on their own but make for a boring album.
Boring for me and nothing too interesting. Not bad but def not for me.
Mellow, experimental and clean. This record was a little all over the place, but does its work as a soundtrack, the music wasn't too invasive, but maybe to the loss of the listener, the music... was just there. That's why I find it hard to choose a favorite song. The record overall is a fine listen but just not impactful, its there and it does its thing. Favorite track: playground love. Overal score: 4.0/10
I dunno, doesn't feel essential. Will I listen to again: 1%
An album that gives the experience of watching a movie but playing on your phone the whole time
It's okay to listen to. Nothing remarkable but pretty good as far as ambient /electronic soundtracks go
Interesting.
If I didn’t already know this was a soundtrack I would definitely think it should be a soundtrack. Idk, never been able to get into Air, despite trying since the 90s. Love the cover art, though!
Would have preferred an entire album made up from just the sound of air! It was actually Houmous & Chutneys 23rd studio album ‘Airy’ 1.5
Gefällig, aber andere Filmmusik begeistert mich mehr. Vielleicht muss man den Film gesehen haben.
Decent enough for spreadsheet navigation - luckily I was already awake so I wasn't too bored with it. Nothing I would ever really seek out...or listen to again. And that last track was straight up bizarre.
Fine… maybe better with the movie.
A pretty spacey and mellow beat tape. Overall a decent time with it that is great for a soundtrack to some late night hobbies to chill out to
I don’t get this one.
2.5. Nice atmospheric sounds and a couple of good tracks.
p857. 2000. 2 stars. Mostly limp, ambient noodling. You will have a more enjoyable experience watching the film.
This is the score to a movie. Not the Soundtrack, but the score. As a band nerd I appreciate scores and the musicality of creating an experience with the right music, but this isn't exactly a John Williams masterpiece and instead had an entire song of alternating quarter notes. Still not the worst thing I've heard on this list though.
Fine, but nothing memorable.
could have died before hearing and been just fine
It's...interesting, but it's really in no way a must listen, and I think that impacts my desire to give it any kind of good score. My 1001 Albums buddy brought up the point of (and I'm paraphrasing): "if soundtracks like this can be on this project, musicals sure as hell should be". And I tend to agree. There's a lot more "essential" listening in that space than this. Hell, there's a lot more essential listening in the soundtrack space, too. But I digress.
Instantly forgettable.
Love air but this is by far not their best
Don’t care for this music
Although I can appreciate the atmospheric sounds, I don't think I can give this a higher rating than 2. I'm impressed that a movie soundtrack made the list of top 1001 albums of all time, and I do think its earned its place here. It's not quite a 1 star because it's not like I hated the album, there was just nothing exciting or memorable about it. I'm sure it's a great movie score, just not a great album 2/5
What a weird album to be on this list.
Um is this from the movie?
Love Air. Love the single. Love ‘MoonSafari’. Love some moments throughout this album. Love the snippets of dialogue. I enjoyed listening to this as a soundtrack, but I do not think this deserves to be in the list as an album. Soundtrack rearing ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Album rating ⭐️⭐️
I love AIR. ’Moon Safari’ is an amazing album, but this feels like one really good song and a bunch of half finished studio sketches. It probably works really well as the film soundtrack but as a stand alone album it’s underwhelming. Disappointing.
Some of the electronic vibes were really good, but overall this album was hard to listen to because of the serial killer creepy vibe. The final song was a struggle to finish because the narrator was so vividly describing atrocities, which left a very unsettling feeling as the album finished. I may have rated it a three without the final track.
Young Dry Keiths. As bland as can be, imo.
Electronic music. Interesting
it was quite nice but quite forgettable too
A handful of very pretty songs but the rest were just okay/forgettable.
Not my cup of tea
I would be able to tolerate the choir and string synths in an 80s album but it just feels stale here. There is potential, but nothing impressive
It could have not existed, and I wouldn't notice a difference. I guess it could be a good background noise for reading, but other than that, I don't see a real value here.
Really strong start became a bit too weird for me pretty quickly.
Soundtracks are a prickly pear with the author(s) - worthy of inclusion when it matches their POV and not worthy when their weird rules for exclusion apply. Here, Air's Virgin Suicides soundtrack is a forgettable album to a near-forgettable movie. How this rates worthy of inclusion on this list is confusing to me, but then again Air's popularity alone confuses me as well. 2/5
I'm sorry, but soundtracks should *not* be on this list. They don't make complete sense in isolation. One of my favourite movie soundtracks didn't become that until after I saw the movie, and for good reason. They complement the movie, such that the movie complements the album. Knowing the album without the movie detracts massively from the music. Poor choice from the list creator. 2* purely for the opening track being good. Rest of boring boring filler.
I really, really hate the inclusion of movie soundtracks in this list. They don't exist on their own. Without the visual aspect, the songs can't convey their full meaning. I like Air, and 'Playground Love' is one of my favorite songs. If it wasn't for that, this would be a 1 star.
I've had a few albums where I saw the artist and groaned, only to find I loved the material. This time I figured something by Air had to be good, but this album really sucked hard. It's a soundtrack for a film. I think there's probably only one or two film soundtrack albums I could bear and this isn't one of them. It starts out okay I guess, but it soon gets repetitive and by the end it's just boring.
Otros discos enormes de este 2000: COLDPLAY- Parachutes, PJ HARVEY - Stories from the city, stories from the sea, YO LA TENGO - And then nothing turned itself inside-out, THE JAYHAWKS - Smile, EELS - Daisies of the galaxy, THE WATERBOYS - A rock in the weary land, ELLIOTT SMITH - Figure 8, RADIOHEAD-Kid A , COLDPLAY-Parachutes, U2-All that you can't leave behind, MADONNA-Music , QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE-Rated R , Dakota Suite- Signal Hill, Lambchop- Nixon, David Gray- White Ladder, Mojave 3- Excuses for travellers, Piano Magic -Artists´ Rifles, D'Angelo- Voodoo, Primal Scream- XTRMNTR, Goldfrapp- Felt Mountain, Death Cab for Cutie- We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes, Doves- Lost Souls, Black Box Recorder- The facts of life, Calexico- Hot Rail, Ágætis Byrjun (Sigu Ros), The Sophtware Slump (Grandaddy), The Marshall Mathers (Eminem), Skantonia (Outkast), Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven (Godspeed you black emperor!), Since i left you (The Avalanches), The Noise Made by People (Broadcast), The great eastern (The delgados), The Friends of Rachel Worth (The Go-Betweens), Tourist (St. Germain), Community Music (Asian Dub Foundation), Chore of Enchantment (Giant Sand) y otro monumento en forma de triple álbum como es 69 lovesongs (The magnetic fields).
Given this is a movie soundtrack, most of the songs fade into the background which is fine, of not very captivating. That said, there are one or two songs that grab you and those are the ones I like. Dirty Trip is my favourite, I think, but even then it's still just alright. The rising tension of the song keeps you gripped, but there's little else to say. The Word Hurricane is interesting in the last bit when it dissolves into discord, but two songs does not a good album make. Favs: Dirty Trip, The Word Hurricane
Nice, but not essential
It is good soundtrack music, but it doesn't quite have something extra to make it particularly memorable as a standalone album to listen to. It's just fine.
Sounds like Ben Folds.
Very pleasant elevator music. 2/5
It had a pretty good vibe. I don’t know that I will ever listen again or recognize it if it comes on tho
Interesting and boring at the same time.
Not nearly as enjoyable as Moon Safari
Air is very much the kind of artist I should like, but idk I'm not too crazy for Moon Safari and I like this one even less. It's just kinda shallow sounding for ambient pop. But I do like Playground Love. 2.5/5
Why does anybody think that this is a must-listen? This is okay but no better than that. I'm sure it works well with the film but not independently.
Rating: 5/10 Meh.
Only until it realised this was a movie soundtrack did i realise the point of the album. I was originally going to say nothing but the first song jumped out at me, which makes me sense now. 2.9 stars, but if i had seen the movie i probably would’ve rated this much higher.
A decent soundtrack, but still just a soundtrack - which means I don't think it belongs on the list. Evokes a mood, which is the point, but doesn't work as well without the movie. Lacking in lyrics, lacking in soul, lacking in inspiration. Not for me, but passable background music I guess.
Well, that was boring. I started liking it but got bored really quick. 2 stars, at least it wasn't obnoxious.
I imagine this would be better had I’d seen the movie. But it’s decent, mostly atmospheric background music. 5.5/10
I can see this being very fitting for a certain type of film, but I don't think it stands very well on its own as just an album. For being almost exclusively instrumental, it's a bit too uninteresting to listen to from start to end. Generally I feel that Air is a bit overestimated as well. They're doing what sounds like 80s or early 90s synth music in the 2000s, so it's not that unique to me. Vangelis for example does it better.
This was honestly just boring. I really liked "Moonlight Safari" but this album just didn't click with me. Not sure why.
There were a couple of moments where I started to like this album, but it kept kind of going back to just sounding like an extended Dark Side of the Moon interlude. It makes sense for a film score, but not being super familiar with the movie the album doesn't really stand on its own for me.
Sleepy. I don't understand why people like this one a lot. It's...fine at best. 2.49/5
Missed this movie in 1999. Soundtrack is okay, very sad considering my thoughts about suicide now that I’m older. Probably will give it 2 stars.
Some songs like Dead Bodies and Ghost Song were pretty good. I think all of these songs are a bit better individually or would do better in they were put into other full albums as a sort of interlude. As a whole album, though, this was pretty boring to listen to.
Meh
Eclectic for sure. Odd album overall, likely better if you've seen the movie.
Interesting background music - but why is a score in this list? This is 1001 ALBUMS not 1001 movie soundtracks. I haven't seen this movie - would like to I guess?
*yawn*
Certainly some nice sounds, but fairly unengaging. Very difficult to get into and stay invested in. Maybe good for some ambient background, but doesn’t stand on its own for me.
It's OK I guess but without the film to go with it seems unnecessary for the list
Not really my style of music. I really enjoyed the final track though
Album 402 of 1001 Air - Virgin Suicides Rating : 2.5 / 5 An interesting listen. Not the normal "soundtrack". Nice listening experience but can't recall any "songs" to mention.
Boring.
Felt like what it was - a movie soundtrack. Cool to have on in the background, but mostly just that. In saying that, I guess that the whole point of some music is just to have something playing in the background. For this list, I feel like we need something that sets it apart musically to be on here.
Moon Safari is a brilliant album of fully realized songs. Compared to that, this sounds like what it is - one song followed by a series of musical ideas composed and arranged for the express purpose of complimenting scenes in a movie. Why in the world someone would choose to listen to this instead of one of Air’s collections of actual songs is mind-boggling. And it's going on the sublist. GROUPS THAT PRODUCED GREAT ALBUMS BUT ARE REPRESENTED ON THIS LIST BY A MEDIOCRE ALBUM: Air, Go-Betweens, Metallica, U2, Bruce Springsteen, the Cure, the Black Keys, Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth, Paul Simon, Prince, Miles Davis,
I wanted to like this so much. It just... melted into the background and I stopped paying attention to it. Good music, but I had difficulty in actively listening to it.
Far too slow for me but I could understand enjoying it in the right environment.
Someone must have really liked the movie.
Never heard any of this band, album or saw this film. I’m halfway now and that’s where I’m going to stay.
I absolutely love the first song and had high expectations for the rest of the album but was immediately disappointed. I'm sure this record is good as a movie soundtrack but it doesn't really work as an album on its own.
This did nothing for me. Nice to listen to but I’ve never been a massive Air fan and this one didn’t sway me.
Not at all unpleasant to listen to, but it very much comes off as a Soundtrack more than an Album. Too much so to make sense as a pick on this list.
I personally thought the songs lacked a climax and where kind of mid ngl
I love listening to film scores and although I have seen The Virgin Suicides (ages ago), on its own this wasn’t that interesting.
Cmon what are we doing. A mediocre collection of tracks that no one needed to hear outside of enjoying this movie.
Playground Love is an incredible song. The rest of the instrumental tracks could have been more compelling.
2.5 stars. An alright album if you're lost in thought and want something in the background. "Clouds Up" sounds like it was not meant to be the focus of my attention. "High School Lover" was good. The songs, especially the closing track, are too apparently the soundtrack to something else.
Pleasant ambient music. Seems like it was perfect for its intended purpose. Not sure it’s something I “need to hear before I die”
Depressing. Could see why this was the soundtrack to Virgin Suicides.
Air was the first album I got and I had a whole schpeel about it. This was just ambient noise.
This is the second album I've drawn from Air. I rather liked the last one (Moon Safari), scored it a 4 with the comments "It seems to bounce around between... really good, and OK. ... there's a charm here, and I overall enjoyed this album." So that's encouraging. This is a soundtrack album, so it is, by nature, background-y. Which is also a bit, well, boring. Strike that, a LOT boring. It is certainly pleasant enough, but there's not a single memorable moment. Not sure why this is deemed essential. 2/5
Not bad. Chilled out vibes On the verge of a gear it never really gets into
Ok. Moody music.
Meh I’d rather listen to Obscured By the Clouds
Not for me.
I'm not sure I would include a film score on the 1001 albums list as the spots are far too precious. As it is there far too many albums from the same artists on this list and this is just wasting a list spot something far more relevant. If I were to include a film score of popular music, this one would not be it. The score is as middling as the film. If you were going to include recent important French electronica as a film score then work of Daft Punk on TRON Legacy would be a much better choice, or even the American Beauty soundtrack (also from a 1999 film) with which Thomas Newman handles the subject matter far more musically interesting and engaging manner, particularly if you've never seen the film.
Trökigt.
Music was nice background, especially where they played actual instruments rather than synthesized keyboard.
Would have been a 4 if it wasn’t for the creepy and disturbing last song. I understand the last song relation to the movie but keep it out of there. But this was all out of context because I have not seen the movie.
not familiar at all with this movie or soundtrack. some tracks-the instrumental ones-were fine as background music, but others-the ones with dialogue bits-were just really odd since I have no frame of reference to the movie. why is this on the list?
This feels like a recipe for marinade - kinda weird on its own without meat. A film score needs the film so that all these sounds and moods have context. On its own it ends up flat.
probably better in the context of the film - just haven’t seen it!
I have never seen this movie. I did not particularly care for the album. It wasn't awful but it wasn't good. Nothing really moved the dial. Thankfully it was short.
This was a fairly weird one to listen to. I’ve never seen the movie and, although the music was well-done, it just felt incomplete and disjointed, as the music likely related to different scenes from the movie. The first song was pretty nice though. Last song spoils the movie, although I’m not planning on watching it anytime soon, so not a big deal for me.
I loved Moon Safari and then they released this! It was about time the French managed to give us something other than Mr Jarre, but there is still his influence through Air's music. This seemed like a distancing from that style and I didn't know what to make of it at the time. It seemed a brave creative decision, after the success of their breakthrough LP. It's pretty good for what it is, a film soundtrack, with all its repeated melodies running through it. But as an album of songs it's OK - mellow in a creepy way and the perfect musical setting for your Catholic themed dinner party. A mid 2.
As a movie soundtrack, it's not bad. As a standalone album, it doesn't do it for me. Too much ethereal music meant to just accompany a movie. It's got some really good pieces, but as a whole it falls a bit flat for me.
Not exactly bad, but I don't get why this on the list, didn't take anything from it. I don't really get soundtracks - this might be a brilliant soundtrack to the film, but without the context it was just boring to me. 2/5
Movie was interesting, album not so much
Eerie. Not my cup of tea
Kind of just ambient sound to me.
Bit sleepy for me. Wouldn't listen again.
Mostly instrumental guitar/bass/drums
Wasn't for me.
Pretty mid
Repetitive, dull and underwhelming. Does it work in the movie? Who cares? I wouldn’t want to see it now anyway.
It's OK I guess.
I don’t know why I had to hear this. Boring and not much going on. A couple songs that are alright.
Interstellar is MY favorite movie and the soundtrack is great. They should put that on here instead. idc about british guy's movie I've never seen.
So I was bored until the very last song and I got really creeped out. I don’t know if that’s like insensitive or something but this was creepy as hell and just not something I liked.
Really wasn't a fan of the first track. Thankfully the rest of the tracks were different and basically all instrumentals. They were ok I guess, but I wasn't vibing with them today. Maybe I would be on a different day? They were pretty chill and easy to listen to. Not bad overall, but not anywhere near good. Feeling a high 2 to a low 3 on this one
Bit boring
Certainly a good OST, but for me, lacks substance as a stand-alone project. As an OST: 4/5 For the sake of this website: 2/5 (Dead Bodies almost bumps this to a 3)
2/5 naaah
I don’t want to listen to a film score. Don’t put me through this. Ok I listened to it, don't worry. I just can't get behind listening to a score out of the context it was made for and especially not in this case because it just doesn't work as an album. I'm sure I should watch the movie, but that's not what I signed up for here.
2/13, 15%
Fine, just really not at all for me. The band is called Air - and that's a little like what this listening to this album is for me: not much at all, just kinda there like air. Only far less necessary for, you know, sustaining life.
A soundtrack that sounds very muck like a sountrack. Makes me want to watch the movie, but not necessarily listen to the whole album again. Two movie reels out five. 📽️📽️
not bad, but also not good. Wouldnt listen again but heard much worse on here
I love Talkie Walkie by Air. But this album just didn’t grab me.
Ho-Hum except the opener. Strong two week three.
Just electronic, not a fan
Some decent bits, more for background music
If I need an album to put me to sleep, this would be pretty high in my choices.
I really enjoy this movie but listening to this music out of context made me feel like I was getting half an experience.
I don't see the point of listening to this out of context. It's not self-sufficient, it's not supposed to be. Cute cover though
Nice soundtrack but really not something I'd seek out to listen to again. Might check out the movie at some point though.
Weird. I dint know if it stands alone.
Air did a good job with making music for the movie. However, it's background music for a movie. Lyrics are far between. The song names are things like 'Bathroom'. It's not what I want.
I enjoyed Moon Safari. I'm not sure this adds a lot though. In fact one or two of the tunes sound like pastiches of the first album tracks.
Okay, so this was a pretty short one so I knocked it out early. It was hard to call this an 'album' per se. It's melodic and dreamy, and as a person who's never actually seen the Virgin Suicides, I don't know if I have all of the context necessary to really appreciate it. Air is a French electronic music duo that uses synthesizers and actual dialogue from the movie to create a distinct atmosphere that permeates the film (no spoilers, but TW: suicide). I dunno. This wasn't one of my favorites, but I like the marriage of the two artistic mediums of music and cinema. Maybe I would have appreciated this more if I had seen the film. NPR said, "Listening to the Virgin Suicides score on loop hasn't been so much an exercise in nostalgia, or even a means of escape. Reliving it is more of a prescient reminder-- one I needed to hear as a teenager, and that I could use again today-- that now is not forever." My teenage years were nothing like the ones depicted in that movie, so I'm reminded of the quote from Kimmy Schmidt "Your experiences are not universal!" Favorite Track: Suicide Underground
A moody soundtrack that might be good if I was hearing it while watching a movie I wanted to see, but alas, no.
this was really mid. perhaps would have been good as an ost but as a listening experience in its own right it was not all that interesting, and the monologue in the last track without any context at all was quite off-putting. not my cup of tea.
Not a fan. It did make me think about seeing the movie. Every song sounded the same.
I remember liking “Air” the artist back in the day, I certainly did not this time around
Surprised to see a movie soundtrack. I mean it’s fine, but if you divorce it completely from the movie I wonder if it makes the list
Snoozeville.
Not actively unpleasant to listen to, but incredibly boring to spend that much time on.
Another head-scratcher as far as I'm concerned. I hear some Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon influence, but overall this is just background music. Fine as a subtle movie soundtrack, but that's it. Won't listen again.
Virgin Suicides is background listening but doesn't connect with me from a film I've never seen. It's just there, 2/5ing.
Very weird to see this on here as it’s not even a soundtrack, it’s a movie score with a lot of awkward, silent pauses
Damn this just wasn't great - I don't get the appeal. Literally just electronica/instrumentals. 3/10.
A film soundtrack with a pretty leitmotif, but needs to be heard with the film playing. Not sure why it's considered outstanding.
Not a fan
Not as good as Moon Safari to my liking, very prog in most parts except the short track times. Interesting, more so If you imbibe in other recreational substances. Most likely not to listen to again. Favourite tracks Playground Love and Suicide Underground.
Not for me.
Just an average soundtrack really and nothing that stands out.
Not offensive, but also not remarkable
This is really not my thing, but I guess it’s fine for what it is. It’s designed as background music, and I’m generally looking for a more active listening experience. Something like “Dark Messages” creates a great mood, but it has no melody, no structure, and doesn’t go anywhere. The opener, “High School Lover” and “Bathroom Girl” are probably the most song-like songs, but everything except the title track is still missing major aspects of what I think of as a song (e.g. a melody, or a B-section). It’s also a little same-y- for a mood-oriented CD, it sure sticks in the same mood a lot of the time (to whit: minor chords, descending sequences, dark), and several songs felt like the same song played once with conventional and once with electronic instruments (including the hooks to “Playground Love” and “High School Lover”, which may be intentional). I didn’t detest listening to it, but it never got me excited and I’ll never play it again.
Fell asleep, but sounded nice
Love Air but this album disappoints.
ok
