Reviews (page 2 of 10)
Didn’t float my boat. Regarded as a great concert, but I’ve been to better gigs than that. Bit of wrong’un too wasn’t he!
he did what
Jerry Lee Lewis manages to answer the question: What if Little Richard was white and married his 13 year old cousin? A question which really didn't need asking.
rest in pieces asshole
Ah yes, the racist, pedophillic, incestual, music stealing piece of shit. And this is a live album to boot. Go listen to Little Richard Is Back (And There's a Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On!) (1964) instead for an album you must hear before you die. 1⭐️
“Live at the Star Club, Hamburg” by Jerry Lee Lewis (1964) Jerry Lee Lewis is a rock and roll icon. But here we have a record that is, in a word, horrible. This museum display is evidence of everything that’s wrong with albums made from live recordings. I’m sure the concert (qua concert) was great, but this record (qua record) is organized crime. It’s a fecal fossil. If this is your first exposure to Jerry Lee Lewis, please don’t listen to it. Please, please do not listen to this album. In an attempt to capture lightning in a bottle, it ends up with a few fireflies in a leaky butterfly net. Comparing these live recordings with the studio originals reveals the poor quality: none of the classic Sun Records lead vocal reverb, and a very bad mix with too little guitar and virtually no bass, tinny drums, sloppy pitch control, extremely limited tonal and dynamic range on the piano and (ironically and fatally) virtually NO audience interaction. It’s a blasphemous denial of Jerry Lee Lewis’ genius as a recording artist and as a musician. Also, the tracks on this album scramble the order of the songs from the original concert (and the Spotify abridgment gives only eight of the album’s thirteen songs), thus denying Jerry Lee Lewis’ chosen set arrangement. It slaughters his artistic integrity. Lamentable. Jerry Lee (age 85), I hope you read this, and I join you in shaking a fist and raising a finger at Smash/Mercury. 1/5
I picked this up on CD years ago after a colleague did a write-up about it. I haven't listened in ages, but it's just as bonkers as I remember, particularly "Mean Woman Blues" and "High School Confidential." I love a raucous live album, especially one that hasn't been fixed in the studio. The Killer was decidedly NOT a good dude, to put it mildly, but Live at the Star-Club Hamburg makes an excellent case for separating the art from the artist.
That creep can roll, man.
Energy like no other. Killed it.
Short and sweet. If and when time travel has been invented and becomes affordable, this performance will be high on my bucket list. It sounds like Jerry is pushing his voice and his piano to their physical limits, and his three bandmates aren't far off. Other bands later used this to theatrical effect. Not only is this the OG performance; it also feels more genuine than the artificially summoned anger from much of the later rock, metal and punk movements.
How can you NOT get jumping for a Jerry Lee Lewis show? Total high energy from the master of boogie woogie piano.
Nummer 10. Vilken skev story. Vilket helvetes drag.
It does not sound like a comeback, a nostalgia exercise, or a professional live set. It sounds like a man trying to rip the roof off the room because restraint would be a personal insult. This is not Jerry Lee Lewis at his most refined, but probably Jerry Lee Lewis at his most unstoppable. It’s savage and towering.
Album so good you start wondering if there were altruistic reasons he married 13 year old cousin. There wasn't, he really was in love with and later abused his 13 year old cousin. Also the album is missing like half of it on Spotify for some reason. Doesn't matter. None of that affects my enjoyment. This is fucking rock and fucking roll. There's no way you listened to this without tapping your feet at least once. This nost definitely influenced punk, to just go out and fucking rock, go crazy, have ENERGY. He's a monster on piano, the band can barely even keep up. I'd be getting up and running to this if I wasn't so high and also at midnight. Shit is just straight up, pure awesome in an album
Jerry Lee Lewis's gift and curse was that he was an eternal teenager - frenetic, brash, horny, uninhibited, narcissistic, invincible until he wasn't. At age 28 and in semi-exile on account of what's euphemistically referred to in his Wikipedia entry as his "turbulent personal life," he played this ferocious set at one of the Beatles' old haunts in Hamburg. And I mean "haunts" in both senses; Lewis sounds here like he's trying to exorcise demons - of the changing trends that were passing him by, of his own broken career, of his own bent self. And what he conjures is a vision of the rock-and-roller as schoolyard bully. His "Money (That's What I Want)" shoves the Mop-Tops' version to the ground and takes its lunch money, while his "Hound Dog" goes toe-to-toe under the bleachers with Elvis's version and comes away with at least a split decision (one imagines Lewis, seething at the piano at how nobody ever canceled *that* fucker). And of course the material he made famous sparkles - "Great Balls of Fire" is wild and uneven and raw like it should be. By the time he staggers into an exhausted, wobbly version of "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" he's given everything he physically has to the stage. If you've ever wondered why rock and roll was such a force - why it led to the youth of the world convulsing in a spasm of thrown chairs, thrown panties, thrown voices - start here.
Amazing album, but the version they have on Spotify is crap. It contains half the songs in the wrong order.
Bad man makes great music.
The Spotify version of this album only has eight tracks - I don't know why - it was originally released with thirteen tracks - one more (Roy Orbison's 'Down The Line') was added for the CD release. The tapes for two additional tracks recorded on the night have been lost - these were 'You Win Again' and 'I'm On Fire'. The album was recorded in April 1964 during Jerry Lee's 'fallow' period following the fall-out of his marriage to his thirteen year old cousin Myra Gale Brown - this caused a storm of bad publicity when he arrived for his British tour in May 1958 - they had actually been married 6 months by that time and he was seemingly still married to his first wife. The scandal effectively ended his standing as a top-tier rock 'n' roll artist at the time, destroying his mainstream career for over a decade. If one treats "Live At The Hamburg Star Club" purely as a musical review then this is a superb, raw live album that's full of energy and makes you wish you were there. The set list contains Jerry Lee standards and also Rock n Roll standards from his peers. It's quite brilliant. Five stars. Side A 1 "Mean Woman Blues" (5/5) 2 "High School Confidential" (5/5) 3 "Money (That's What I Want)" (4/5) 4 "Matchbox" (5/5) 5 "What'd I Say, Part 1" (5/5) 6 "What'd I Say, Part 2" (5/5) Side B 7 "Great Balls of Fire" (5/5) 8 "Good Golly, Miss Molly" (5/5) 9 "Lewis Boogie" (5/5) 10 "Your Cheatin' Heart" (5/5) 11 "Hound Dog" (5/5) 12 "Long Tall Sally" (5/5) 13 "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" (5/5) 1989 re-issue 14 "Down the Line" (4/5) Total - 68 Average - 4.86 312/1001 169/312 albums reviewed were new to me.
This album is so good musically that by all rights I should give it a minus one for being just 22 minutes long - but ol’ Jerry Lee always leaves ‘em wanting more. Rock solid.
Nice
The Killer slaughters in this short live set that defines everything and I mean everything that is Rock N Roll in a feral performance that besides The Who Live at Leeds has no equals. Just about everything that came before it and would come after it sounds neutered compared to this set that is an ugly thing of beautiful raw power that grabs you by the throat and fucks you and shit up in ways that remain untouchable some 60 years after it's initial release. Jerry Lee Lewis sounds positively possessed on this demonic document of Rock N Roll at its brutal and primal take no prisoners best. What a crime scene!
Separating the art from the artist, as the guy really was a piece of work, this was really good. Not the kind of music I normally listen to, but you can't deny the energy going on on this record.
60 years of American media have tried and mostly failed to recapture the Americana overflowing from this album alone.
Excellent album, though not an endorsement of the individual.
Insane stuff, totally ferocious playing - rock and roll in it's purest form
One of Rock and Roll's original sociopaths at his finest. The first live punk album? It's worth asking. It's the kinda music that, even to this day, goes straight to the nervous system. Try playing this at max volume without bopping your head and tapping your feet, even just a little. Good luck! An excellent selection of covers and a couple of Jerry Lee's classics makes for a perfect blend. I think it's the best cover of Money I've ever heard. I love this album
They call him The Killer because he's murdering that piano. And possibly two of his wives... Genuinely one of the wildest fastest sets ever played. That it's as old as it is only adds to the legend. Completely frantic, off the rails, feels actually dangerous. Few recorded live albums capture the feeling you get watching a performer who is actively a danger to themselves and others while they're onstage. If you go to enough live shows, you begin to notice that type of performer more often but it's rare that they are able to get a full album recorded. Even rarer that they are also uber talented. Favorite Tracks: Mean Woman Blues, Money, What I'd Say, High School Confidential, Great Balls of Fire, Hound Dog, Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin On
Extremely energetic live performance. 5 stars
I think this is a great album. Not only is it just a great example of pure, primal rock 'n roll, but it's one of the greatest sounding live albums. Not a bad song in the bunch and the band is hot. 5 stars.
Lots of energy, the baby loved it
Energetic and revitalising, a literal banger.
Doesn’t get much better than this when it comes to traditional rock n roll. Not a bad live sound for ‘64. Short, snappy and the standard length of a gig I guess. The Beatles and stones would’ve considered themselves not worthy in his presence!
Excellent
F***ing sensational. The engineering of this record really slams home just how loud, energetic and dominant this performance must have been in the room that night. I love this kind of record. You really should hear this to understand the timelessness of a captivating performance. The raw power and impact here makes us consider how popular music became so watered down and impersonal 60 years later.
There might as well not even be a backing band on this, the way Jerry Lee's bashing away you can't even hear anyone else but the drummer most of the time. But you don't really miss them though; Jerry Lee might be a reprehensible egomaniac, but he sure knows how to make it sound like hell is coming out of his piano. All those 50s/60s rock and roll standards can kind of sound tame when you listen with modern ears, like you listen to "Money" or "Hound Dog" and it's hard to understand how *this* was once considered a societal problem. Along with the Sonics' debut album, this gives you all the danger, all the delinquency, all the *racket*. Coming into this, I didn't think it would live up to what I had built it up to being when I was in high school, but honestly it sort of does? Probably I should feel a bit more conflicted about talking up this album as much as I am in light of what we know about him, but like, he's dead now so whatever.
It's a balls of fire album! 5/5 Love it
It's a shame this is only 22 minutes long, because it's an absolutely tremendous slice of rock 'n' roll history from one of its biggest names. That piano takes a fearful beating from JLL; you can practically feel the sweat flying off him. The band is into it, the crowd are loving it. Superb.
Ghud Ghollie Miz Mollay famously not the title of 1950s film starring Jayne Mansfield♟️♟️♟️ You lose Eastern Europe! 🎖️🇺🇸
"Money (That's What I Want)" is my favourite sing of this album
Jesss, see on hea
Every single song on this album is a legend!
Wahnsinnsalbum..krasse Energie, geile Musik
Wow nonstop bops and no filler. Love the energy and the surprise hits.
So much energy pouring out of one man. It's thrilling, it's everything a live album needs to be. Makes you wish you were there to feel it for yourself. Rock 'n Roll at its core. Gave me great balls of fire.
Today, for avoidance of doubt, I would not attend a 22min concert of cover versions by an alleged murdering, racist, hebephiliac. That aside, 5 starts.
I know but damn if this isn’t a hell of a performance.
This one was not an easy find but I was able to locate it on old vinyl stored in an attic and mercifully it was not warped and played very well. Made me very nostalgic for the early 60, and the chance to have seen Jerry Lee live at the height of his prowess. Amazing and gifted original rock and roller who deserves all the accolades he receives.
No clue what this guy did, but damn this music is right up my alley. Each song is jam packed with grooves, i can only imagine the energy in this club during the live recording. It had me dancing along doing my laundry and cleaning the kitchen - really good stuff.
Yes, as a man, he was a POS. But man could he rock. I am not judging the man here. This about the music and the show he put on...and just WOW! Jerry Lewis and the Nashville Teens? Humor or horror. This is f'ing rock and roll....
What a great album! I would’ve loved to have been at that concert!
Sweet Rock and Roll.
😃😄
Great album
Jerry was a beast
I assumed I was going to hate this. Old timey music is bad enough, but live old timey music? Even worse. But actually, this album slaps. It's so fucking good. The energy is huge. Why did rock and roll ever go out of fashion? It's so damn energetic and danceable. Shame this guy seems to be about as bad a human being as his music is good.
i like jerry lee lewis because he married his 13 year old cousin, thats really based. upvoted!
This album was a total joy for me to listen to. It is too bad that I am reading that the man was such a POS, but could he ever perform. A lot of these songs do sound very similar. But still, rating the album and ignoring the character of the performer, I give it 5 stars.
Fantastic.
Underbart att höra Jerry Lee Lweiss Live!!!
5 stars
Crikey, well these tunes set the template for so much that followed of course, but these live versions astonish in their delivery and intensity from the off. Jaw-dropping from start to finish. Old or young I defy anyone not to love it. What a gig this must have been!
While listening to this I thought „no wonder people where goings nuts during the concerts!“ pure energy and power.
I'll overlook that he was a right back n front and that half of these are covers. This is top class
What an absolute barnstormer of an album. Imagine being at this gig! The band sounds so punk and you can hear the sweat dripping off everyone. I love this one and will definitely be giving it plenty of listens in future.
My favorite Willie album.
I don't know anything about this guy, but this album was energetic af. At this point I don't know which are covers and which are originals, but all were a fun romp.
As per usual, judging only the music, this is top level
One of sun records finest, imagine being around at the time and seeing this live. Mid 5.
I would be upset if I only got 22 minutes out of a concert ticket, but as an album it allows for “all killer and no filler.” Easy then to listen over and over without complaint. Top notch boogie woogie, reminding me how much fun piano jazz can be.
Pianovetoisen rock'n'rollin ehdoton helmi, ja tässä harvinaisessa tapauksessa liveveto tuo levylle lisäarvoa! Toimistollakin tutisee puntti niin, että laitos järkkyy. Sen verran lajinsa huippua, että annetaan femma.
Kuin juna tämä levy puksuttaa eteenpäin! Juuri sopivan pitkä. Livealbumina toimii aivan erinomaisesti, ja tunnelma on räikeä! Rock-klassikko, piano on kovilla.
Electric
Great @ cheerful rock n roll !
Great balls of fire.
'If you don't like peaches, please don't shake my tree!'
Opgevoerde Rock & Roll. Het is even zoeken.
i'll admit, i'm biased. i went into this thinking "oh boy, another live album from the 60s" and expected to give it three stars and move on, but boy was i wrong. jerry fuckin ROCKS these eight tracks and just absolutely gives it his all. though they're all more or less the same 12-bar blues song, he really cranks up the tempo, resulting in an album that's beautifully and mercifully short, barely scraping 22 minutes total. no one correct me but i assume he just showed up on stage in hamburg, played for half an hour, and told the crowd "welp that's it for me, it's past my bedtime. deuces!" *mic drop* and the hamburgers went fuckin nuts. that's tight. i respect that. favorites: high school confidential, money, great balls of fire, good golly miss molly, whole lotta shakin goin on
The energy of this guy is INSANE. I wish I were there and take as much cocaine as Mr Jerry to keep THAT MUSIC GOING. What a fucking legend.
this has anything you would want in a live album… both hits and covers, the crowd going crazy during and between songs, and most of all intensity and passion from the musical act. in short, “the killer” was a bad, bad man. R.I.P.
Great
Honestly, was gonna skip this but I’m glad I didn’t. This is pretty heavy given the context of when it came out.
Legendary!
First album in the series I listened two twice back to back. 5 stars all the way.
This is great! 5???
Setting aside his personal life which would would be a definite 0 stars, I found the raw power of this performance to be outstanding. I doubt there are many live acts who could compete with this. The Nashville Teens are on fire and JLS pounds each piano key with the force and drive that would put to shame Led Zep, the Who or any other hard rock act you would care to mention. 5 stars from me
Very energizing ⚡️
Wild. Wish i could time travel w todays Blue Dream to this club for this show. Hot dawg
A rocking good time!
[Note: the album linked here is not the album referenced in Wikipedia, for the full show/album search for the French titled "Au Star-Club De Hambourg" 🤷] Live at the Star Club, Hamburg is a testament to Jerry Lee Lewis's raw talent and a stark reminder of his deeply problematic past. Marrying his 13-year-old cousin, holding despicable views, and allegedly being involved in multiple suspicious deaths, Lewis is a prime example of an artist whose art and life are irreconcilable. (For a detailed exploration of the murder allegations, check out the Disgraceland podcast episode on Jerry Lee Lewis.) Despite his troubling legacy, Lewis's performance on this album is undeniable. His playing is a furious, almost unhinged display of power, showcasing his absolute piano mastery. The Nashville Teens, his British backing band, struggle to keep up with his relentless tempo shifts and impromptu choices. From the opening note, Lewis is on the attack, pounding the keys with a ferocity that's both thrilling and terrifying. Normally, live albums fall short of capturing the thrill of a show. But this is the exception. Listening to it feels like you’re right there, sweating in the room, as Jerry Lee delivers his intense, near-demonic sermon. Few live albums from any era match the unhinged rock-and-roll ferocity of Live at the Star Club
This live recording is a lot of fun and full of crazed energy. It offers a great sampling of the Jerry Lee Lewis ‘Killer’ experience. https://open.substack.com/pub/richcain/p/project-1001-live-at-the-star-club?r=4ztyq&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true
SOLID GOLD. That's Rock-N-Roll.
This is awesome - great live album and it's short too which I appreciate. Would've been a hop!
Day286 - jerry lee lewis is early rock and roll royalty and this is fun stuff. if the rock hall went back and threw out every piece of crap artist who lived it would empty the place out so i’ll separate the artist from the person
Very short album, but I definitely see the influence on Rock & Roll and Elvis. It's not something I would listen to on repeat, but definitely starts for influence.
Tamest bit of trivia about Jerry Lee Lewis is that he had Chas Hodges of Chas n Dave on bass in a pick up group for him a few years after this. Chas watching him every night on the piano inspired him to switch to piano and go on to team up with Dave. Chas also played bass for Jo Meek's in-house band alongside Ritchie Blackmore. I could rabbit on and on. Anyway, phew rock n roll.
This album just fucking plain flat out rocks it's fucking arse off from start to finish. An absolutely blistering set from Jerry Lee and band.
Barn burning rock and roll. Jerry was a great singer and songwriter and guitarist. Love all his stuff. Live or studio doesn’t matter.
16/7/24 Never had so much fun listening to an album.
cool
That's a hell of a way to start a Monday!! The lendary Rock n' Roll Star: Jerry Lee Lewis! Hell Yeah! That's my type of music, no mistakes here. 5 stars!
Best rock & roll album out there. The playing is really energetic and are some of the best renditions of said songs.
Haver, második számnál repült az öt csillag.
Following up on my Little Richard sentiment from a few reviews back: this is 1000x more punk than the trash ass Germs record I had to listen to last month This legit might be the best live record I've ever heard. It's fast, it's hard, it's nasty, it's performed by an absolute derelict. If I was at this show I would've punched a minimum of two southern cops in the mouth. Five fucking stars, bravo to you, you depraved pervert
Fuck apathy and ennui. Fuck stasis and complacency. Fuck big bands and the music of white America. Fuck slow time. Fuck our parents. Fuck quiet technique. Fuck traditions and classical sensibilities. This music is about movement, sensuality, ecstasy, joy, spontaneity, and energy. It's punk. It's ignorant and disrespectful (in overt and subtle ways). It's a conduit for unspent and repressed energies. It's cathartic and liberating. It's madness. It's unethical. It's disturbing... In 2024, though, this (and Jerry Lee Lewis) are quaint. They've been surpassed by more extremity, more experimentation, more intensity. But this heartbeat of energetic disruption can still be heard and felt. Even as you frown at biographical shortcomings and cultural appropriations, your toes still tap, and a smile infects your face. If not, you're a corpse. This isn't music. It's a stimulant. Amphetamine. I shouldn't take it, but it makes me feel so fucking good.
Unreal- immediately put a smile on my face and the energy and attitude was so unexpected. I would have immediately dismissed a Jerry Lee Lewis album before this and so glad I have it a chance. Such a great time capsule of rock. Just have to forget that he married his 13 year old cousin. But I’m reviewing the music not the man…
This is metal as all hell. I'd never heard a JLL live recording. I knew his hits, of course, but never really understood that whole "The Killer" thing. Until now. He just brings the fire from start to finish. I'm really not a big live album person. But this one's an exception, because he really does show the flash and flair that made him what he is. Good listening -- and only 22 minutes!
Hammer.
Bad dude but man this album brings it.
(rating the album, not the person) This is a spectacular, energetic performance. It's electrifying, exciting, and truly rocking.
OMG. imagine seeing this live...
I need to learn to play the piano like that
Klasse Zeitdokument!
This took me straight back to my weird phase when I was 13 and SUPER into this er of music for like 3 months because I was crushing so hard on someone that I ended up relating to songs about love from the 50s and early 60s. Embarrassing? Yes. Kinda cute and nostalgic in a fun way? Also yes. This was great and he really was an all time performer, Jerry and Little Richard were both just ahead of the pack.
That was a 25 minute roller coaster of awesomeness. Actually saved the album to listen to later. Very pleasant surprise. Had no idea what I was getting myself into
Quick. Live. Fun.
Wow. He bangs the hell out of that piano!! Sounds so good live too. Great songs 5 ⭐️
Jesus, what a live album. This is the type of record that just makes you wanna get up and dance just because the energy of the artist is just that infectious.
That’s a 5. I feel a little dirty giving it a 5, but I think it’s fine. Jerry Lee Lewis is a strange, strange man. I think he did some really weird shit in his lifetime, and I don’t like any of what I’ve read since I finished listening to the album. However… I can kinda separate it, mainly because I just don’t have any sort of deeper connection to the guy’s music like I did for a certain rapper who shall not be named. It’s just kind of annoying that this is as good as it is; I don’t have a single complaint. I think the crowd’s energy is electric, I think the live performances from the band are off the charts, and his piano performances (while singing!) in particular are downright incredible. There’s not a single missed note nor a single missed breath from the man, and he had that crowd hanging onto both of them deeply. His stage presence and control are unbelievable to me – I’m glowing with praise about the way this sounds because it just sounds that damn good. Yes, a lot of this set is ripped wholesale from other artists, and I’d be remiss not to acknowledge that, but I do think he did those songs justice – What’d I Say in particular keeps a lot of the grit from the Ray Charles version, and it just feels good to listen to. Honestly, I enjoyed this a lot, and I really wish the whole thing was on streaming. It’s pretty damn good. Solid 5.
There were three things going through my mind while listening to this. One was "this was WHEN!?!" Two was "this guy really poured himself out for his audience," and three was "this is a rare gem." I wish they had allowed the recording to cover a bit more of the audience and his interactions to make it all the more personalized, but still just to be able to hear this piece of history is really something special. This happened before I was born and still I feel like it is an essential listen for today's music lovers. It is truly timeless.
This rocks harder than anything else I've heard from 1964, louder, meaner and faster.
Brilliant.
Yeah!!!!!!
Great
I can’t believe this is only 22 minutes. Not a dull moment.
Should other people's views affect the reception of their music? Tough question. This is the rating of the music, not the person.
rock and fucking roll. He was a maniac but a great rock 'n' roll man. 5 stars.
The good old days when piano was still an instrument used in Rock’n’Roll
This is rock n roll and raw as you can get it. Sourced right from one of the pioneers. My only complaint is it's too short! I want more!
Good shit.
Best one so far! Fantastic live album. I need this on vinyl
I’ve always taken the view that this project is a review of the music rather than the artist. Despite how much distain I have for Michael Jackson’s personal life, the two one star reviews are because I genuinely think Thriller and Bad are not good albums. When I get to Off The Wall, it’ll be rated much higher. There is nothing bad I can think to say about the music on Live At The Star-Club Hamburg. It’s a fierce, ferocious and perfectly realised expression of the power of pure Rock n Roll. The chunky piano chords, the frenetic drumming, Lewis’s voice with it’s grunts and hiccups. It makes Rock n Roll sound dangerous again, something that Elvis never managed to do. And yes, it’s entirely arguable, in fact possibly justifiable, to suggest that the danger present in Lewis’ music is because of the danger present in the person. But I’m not going to go there. We all know what he did and who he was. But if you’re able to overlook that, then you’ll discover at lot of very good, very influential music
Every song is about sex.
Uralt und immer noch gut
IMPORTANT NOTICE! The album on Spotify is NOT the full album. The full album runs 41 minutes and can be found on youtube. The 22 minute cut on spotify doesn’t give the full picture. This album is rock n roll in its purest form. Jerry Lee might have been a despicable human but he could ROCK.
The version in the Wikipedia review has 13 songs. The one on Apple Music only has 8. But the 8 are pretty damn good. I would really like to hear the full album. I’m going to try to find it on vinyl or cd.
Kinda hate how much I love this. It's such a tight, energetic and raw performance. Jerry is a God awful person but a damn good musician. Also he tried to drunkenly kill Elvis lol
Really enjoyed this, snappy, short, and a whole lotta fun. Can only imagine it would have been absolutely wild being at that show!
I love this album. It goes hard and it sounds like Jerry Lee is jacked up on something stronger than coffee. Relentless. The energy level is through the roof. The crowd is going bonkers. This is the best Jerry Lee Lewis album I've heard and probably the best of all the mid 50's rockers like Elvis, Carl Perkins ect... I can't think of one single other piano driven album I even remotely enjoy. This one is full steam ahead from the get go. The energy going on here alone qualifies this to be at least 4/5 stars.
Pure energy
Cool
Sooooo fucking fun rock and roll at it’s best
Quintessential. 5
Raucous energy, succinct length, minimal talking, great songs. What's not to love.
5 outta 5 no notes
Speed + JLL = heaven
I despise rock and roll music; it makes my ears bleed when I'm forced to endure it as it's just so awful. But this, this is transcendent and forced me to revaluate my feelings about listening to music from a genre I don't usually enjoy. The way Jerry pounds the keyboard and wails with abandon makes this sound feral, but there's an incredible level of showmanship here. Everything is just so tight that it's almost perfect, yet there's enough left loose that it feels raw. Literally brought tears to my eyes it was that good. I think this is probably the best album I've been introduced to by this programme. I would never ever have listened to this if left to choice.
Wild!
Amazing live album.
I have had a really nice time working to this album - jazzy lil bops that
I like Elvis. I like Little Richard. But I have a new favorite old time rock & sock-bop-a-lop-a-doo-wop-bam-a-lam-boom singer. Jerry fucking rocks these songs and I think it's his piano playing that puts him a notch above some of the other legends. He beats the hell out of that piano!! Awesome live album. A legend playing legendary songs. Would've loved to have been there but I wasn't born yet. (It doesn't look like the full album was on spotify. Found it on Youtube.)
9/10
just what i needed 5
Jerry Lee Lewis had the trademark weirdness and moral ambiguity of the rock stars of his era, but he could put on a hell of a show! The hammering piano, the blues chords, and his electric voice transmit the energy of the show right through the headphones. It's hard not to get up and dance to this music.
Such energy
Holy shit, this album rips! This is rock n roll baby. Jerry Lee Lewis sets the piano ablaze and breathes the smoke through the microphone, and the band is right there with him. The energy never relents and the tempo only does for one number. How much speed was Jerry on this night? Very difficult not to move, or at least tap your foot, to this music. This is what the early days of rock were about.
Jerry Lee Lewis - Live at the Star Club Yesterday after listening to this album, I saw that the actor W. Earl Brown posted on Threads that this was the greatest live album of all time. I commented that I just received this album as my daily album and his reply to me is the best way to describe this album: "It oozes sex and explodes with energy. The fact that Jerry Lee could create something so powerful with a 3-piece combo backing him, in an era when the capacity of sound systems were minimal, is mind blowing." Thanks W. Earl Brown! 5/5
This is the music I grew up listening to. I knew 7 of the 8 songs, though the one song I associate with a country music star. I enjoyed listening to these moldy oldies.
Jerry Lee Love the rhythm and energy on this album. Cool how he pushes the tempos. His singing is so expressive I love when he throws in a little yodel. Piano solos are great too. Pure Rock and Roll! “Your cheating heart” was really good. 5
Rock and fucking roll!
8 high quality songs performed with all the energy in the world and no filler. Exactly what an album should be.
Wow this album totally blew me away! So much fire, passion, and energy. I, of course, am like many and do know Lewis' Great Balls of Fire but have never explored much more beyond that. This killer experience was worth every single second. Excellent piano and in spots really good electric guitar too (wish it had a little more guitar, but I know that wasn't as popular at that time). Loved the whole album. Favorite Tracks: all of them!
Absolutely slamming. Live album hitting hard.
Pure rock and roll!!!!
What a hell of a power!
i love this album!!! so!! funky!! and!!! fun!!! i would like to tattoo it on my brain please and thank you
Raw energy is fabulous
What a stage presence, great energy
A classic
Lots of fun energy, always feels like its about to come off the rails, edgy and catchy
Great balls of fire, this was an excellent classic 60s album!
Muy corto, pero me parece absolutamente maravillosoooo
I bet this was such a fun concert. It’s so high energy. Is Money a Jerry Lee Lewis original? I think I’ve only ever heard more modern covers of that. The fast tempo and keys are so fun. My most favorite concerts I’ve been to in the last few years have had this level of energy. It’s something I really value in live music. My only real complaint about this album is that it’s way too short.
Amazing album, very fun
Boy can really play the piano. Sounds like it was a helluva show
Fizzes with energy. Probably won’t listen again but glad I did. This is why live albums are so good.
p74. 1964. 5 stars. I'm not a fan of live albums, but this is terrifyingly good - early 60s raw musical energy, captured into a perfect 37 mins (YouTube version).
That was good!
This is a great rendition of Jerry Lee Lewis. I’m not usually a fan of live albums, but I really enjoyed this one!
high energy, great songs, wish I was there, want to buy a piano
The cocaine was good in Hamburg this night. What a ball of energy.
Classic
Apparently this dude has made some bad life choices. Where he made good ones was the in this music set that was recorded. Early Rock n Roll at it’s finest. I came here for the music🤟
Cool!
heck yes
Jerry Lee Lewis was a master of his craft, and this album really let that craft shine. I thought this was an incredibly well-mixed live album. Great from beginning to end.
Jerry Lee Lewis is a legend at the ivories, and this album showcases exactly why. Everyone has heard a few of these songs, but the flawless performances on a live recording combined with the frenetic and bombastic songs themselves made this album a treat to listen to. Highlights: High School Confidential - Opening song of a concert and live album and this man casually blows the keys off a piano. Fantastic skill on display. Money - Damn this was a fun song to listen to. Classic oldie rock perfection. Good Golly, Miss Molly - Wow, JLL was allergic to keeping it low key. Tearing the keys up! Your Cheating Heart - The one slow song on the album, which does well to showcase the vocals a bit more. Lowlights: None. Final Thoughts: A fantastic album of piano-centric classic rock in only 22 minutes runtime. Everyone should give this a whirl at least once.
This album flies by but also packs a hard punch in just over 20 minutes. Jerry's belting it out and singing all the hits that are still played at karaoke and piano bars despite a lot of people probably not knowing the origins of bangers like money and great balls of fire. It's impossible to not start to at least tap your foot listening to this. It's so fun it'll make you forget how awful jerry lee lewis actually is and also that this was all probably stolen from black people.
This was incredible. Pure music.
Amazing musician- and showmanship!
5/5. A wild and exceptional live album. The energy is what drives this album entirely but there can be some repetitive vibes considering the genre, otherwise would be perfect. The man can play piano no doubt, crazy stuff. Still giving a 5 because this is a live album, and man does he play his heart out.
Fun, tight 22 min. Great energy.
This was 22 minutes of Jerry Lee Lewis just burning the whole fucking place down. Brilliant.
Great energy.
Killer
Putting aside his shitty personal qualities- the dude is an absolute maniac on the keys. This stuff hits hard and it’s from the 60s. I understand from others that he claimed to have created rock n roll, and while that is highly debatable, this doesn’t sound like anything else from that era… the drummer is a fucking magician. This stuff is fast, chaotic, and we’ll arranged. Loved it!
I would kill to see this set. My only complaint is that it didn't go longer.
This album was fun. Especially because I've only heard other versions of a lot of these songs. Jerry Lee Lewis has a really strong energy when he's singing.
Extremely surprising for a live album. Phenomenal. My only gripe with it is that it isn’t longer.
5/5 amazing performance Lewis manages to sound smooth and harsh at the right times
Short and excellent all the way.
Awesome
Hot!
Fundamental rock n roll. Do you even have a pulse if you think that this show wouldn't have been absolutely amazing to see live? JLL is a "interesting" person but I won't let that influence me. This is an important record.
Some real hits on this album
Jerry Lee Lewis has always been one of my least favorite of the famous 50’s artists, but this is an exception. This performance just oozes with frenetic energy, and it keeps it up for almost the whole set. That said, it doesn’t change my opinion of him as a whole, and his normal music is pretty boring.
Wow, what a performance. Usually difficult to convey energy in a live album but the key-slamming vocal drive and rocking mix does this flawlessly. Can't imagine what this would have been like to experience in-person, rock and roll at it's finest. Half a star off for being so only 22 min long (some tracks not included).
For a 22 minute album this is full of energy
Jeg DIGGA dette. Ekte, grytidlig rock n roll
This completely rocks, although it’s unfortunate that Apple Music does not have the full version and I had to listen on YouTube with ads. I can’t hold that against the music, though. With great versions or his own hits, as well as some choice covers, this album has Jerry Lee Lewis as manic and wild as he will ever sound. In a lot of ways, Lewis was bringing a punk like swagger and attitude long before punk music came around.
thank you lord for putting wyatt between this and 'whats the story...'. if i came off that high to this who knows perhaps i wouldnt appreciate it as i should. to get the dullness dutifully ticked off to move on to 'high school confidential' was SATISFYING. no filler, just 22 minutes of racuous stomping glory. let it be known that everyone on the 4 bus yesterday knew i was enjoying this record
Short, but very sweet, what a performer/performance!
Classic Jerry Lee Lewis with all the hits, performed live
👌👍👍👍
This was great fun to listen to.
This is a piano bar but on a recording and Jerry is the maestro par exellence.
Wow. Rock n' roll doesn't get much more rock n' roll-ish than this. Every track a classic and enough energy to light up all of Hamburg for weeks. It's a shame the Spotify version of this album is missing a bunch of songs that are shown in the Wikipedia track listing. Anyway, gotta go with 5 stars for this one.
What fun! A little self similar but very engaging!
A hoot to listen to. I feel like I should put on a pod for skirt and grab a milkshake. A jazzy jam that makes me forget about the horrific atrocities that were occurring in the time period these songs were released during
This might be the best live album every put to tape. Jerry Lee Lewis puts on a hedonistic raucous show that reignited his career after the public fallout after learning about his marriage to his 13 year old first cousin (once removed). The music on this album is so intentionally haphazard, it's almost proto-punk and Jerry Lee Lewis has an attitude to match.
Awesome!
rock 'n' rolll
9/10
Rock n' roll's original whirlwind / Grade A shithouse. One of the few live albums I have ever heard that really makes me wish I'd had the chance to see him live. It's a performance every bit as raw and frenzied as the Jerry Lee Lewis legend would have you believe he was in real life.
Álbum clássico e muito foda. Me surpreendeu positivamente em todos os aspectos.
Pariendo el rock & roll. Agradecido.
Tunnetta ja energiaa! Erinomainen fiiliksen välittävä taltiointi!
Huge amount of energy & really authentic. That poor piano!
These songs sound faster, harder and rawer than any versions I've heard before. The electrified energy in the room is palpable. Makes you really understand why parents and authorities were so freaked out about the power and energy of rock 'n roll. R.I.P. to one of the greats!
Basically a greatest hits live
Brilliant album
Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Rating: 10/10
Pure rock!
Just pure blues. It comes out so effortlessly. You can especially tell how people respond to stuff thats so natural on a live recording
22 minutes of nuclear energy packed into 8 simple songs. This would have been something to see!
Listening to this is hearing a master of their art form at work. Personal issues aside, Jerry Lee Lewis is excellent on this record. Great Balls of Fire and Long Tall Sally are two of my favorite early rock and roll songs and these versions are great. There’s a reason he’s called the killer as some of this stuff goes harder than anything Metallica ever recorded.
I absolutely did not think I would like this and it blew me away. It's such a hot-ass record. I think it really captures the spirit and electric energy that rock 'n roll has always striven for.
Well that was an absolute blast. What a show that must have been!
Dope
Not my kinda thing but I can really see the influence this has had
8th August 2022 Listened in the morning, worked from home then walked on the beacon with Jen. The energy that came off this!! No wonder it’s only 20 minutes, exhausting. What a talent and I bet he was electric live.
classic rock n roll baby
Insane energy, this must have been a great show to see live! As questionable a man as The Killer was, there’s no question he could rock a piano and the stage.
Great songs, definitely passes the test of time.
fuckin slaps, imagine how cool it would be actually getting to be there - 10/10
Fun, high energy, bangers.
Loved this so much! Hit after hit!
Man oh man is this one fun. A rollicking good time.
Wow. Brutal. Punk as fuck.
Absolutamente mesmerizante, te amarra y no te suelta.
First time listening to Jerry Lee Lewis, but I recognized a few songs. This album was a jam
beautiful
Lively energetic and a ton of fun
1964 - old school rock & roll
I wish I was there on that high school party
What an album! 4 stars cos it's good and a bonus star as it's live and from the same year that Pretty Woman and She Love's you (Beatles) were topping the charts and this just blows them out of the water
Damn. Just rocking all the way through. Fun and energetic.
Fantastic
Pariendo el rock & roll. Agradecido.
From today it sounds like generic rock'n'roll although the vocal is nice timbrewise and the live atmosphere is awesome.
Non stop bops
Krass guad
Grande. Shake baby shake it. Great Ball of fire!
Amazing concert
WOW
Surprisingly good
Better than you’d think
Curti dms, ótima energia, lokasso
Wow. So good
Great live real rock album, the energy really comes through.
Fun live set!
This was just SO good. This album is sheer energy. Lewis' passion and charisma really shines through, making you feel like you're part of the audience. Just so damn good.
Classic song after classic song after classic song
Great performance. Knocking it down a star because of the length.
good foot stomping music
Énergie! JERRY LEE
Points deducted for jerry lee lewis being evil in the real world, but this still would've went hard to hit the twist to
Not going to pretend like I'm some old school rock critic who goes nutz over this but I gotta give this man his due that he can bash a piano like that with such indecency for 1964. Not adding Jerry Lee Lewis to the playlist but glad to spend this time with him.
Separating the man from the artist, this album is wild and tons of fun. Especially in the context of when it was recorded. It crosses over into cheesy at times, but maybe that's just because of how much time has passed and how much his style has been borrowed over the last 60 years. There's no denying how much fun it would have been to be in the audience for such a show.
Polished love performance of rock and roll. Short and sweet at 20 mins and very listenable
solid 4.0.

Bouncy, grooovy, just incredibly danceable abs for 64’ this has vibes that some albums today cant recreate
For a rock and roll album that came out in this era, it quite frankly rocked. He’s just slamming the piano at high speed singing some of the best songs of that era. I can’t imagine being in that era with this completely foreign concept of music and just wondering if Jerry Lee Lewis was dropped from another planet with Elvis. It’s too bad that he wasn’t the best guy, but this album was fun.
This is a live performance where Jerry Lee Lewis cemented *something*. This is rock and roll delivered with an energy that devours everything the genre usually is. Jerry Lee Lewis blasts through some jazz, blues, and R&B standards at breakneck speed, while absolutely battering his piano and singing like he's racing the instruments. Songs like High School Confidential take it far enough that I dare say the result has some aesthetic similarities to punk. It's sloppy, it's powerful, it's flying off the rails, and it's a blast. This is an early '60s live album that transcends the status of "document" and remains exciting to this day. This is a remarkable missing link between Elvis and what rock was at the end of the '60s.
Sounds like the pervert could put on one hell of a show!
Sweet sweet Jerry Lee
