Reviews (page 4 of 10)

It’s not my usual style, I can recognize the influence it had on the time though.

Great live album. Unfortunately, the recording quality is not always good.

A rip roaring and dynamic live performance of early rock n roll.

Unbelievable energy on this record - must have been mind-blowing at the time. A true and worthy predecessor of the modern concert experience. Listened to: at home. Favorite tracks: Money, Good Golly Miss Molly

Timeless

this probably went so positively bonkers live i do wish id been there to see it

Very energetic!

Very cool blues rock

Some fantastic classics, still would prefer them not be on a live album though. 3.9

Classic Jerry Lee short live album but nice representation of his thang

Teenage incest non withstanding this was very enjoyable

Old school high energy bangers

I was very pleasantly surprised by how much I actually liked this. I can really hear where a lot of the artists I love were influenced by his music. It's a little too much key clanging for me to sit through a whole album of, but it's gone some certified bangers.

Fun bright and energetic live album. Really great to sort of feel the energy he gets and gives from the crowd. Had this on while on a run, great music for it.

Great album, shit person

I love his energy and showmanship

Loved this, just pure unfiltered rock energy from start to finish.

That was a fun collection of Classics that I had not heard all together before.

I think he was very influential in shaping rock and roll music. The songs were all good but I didn’t feel like there was anything special about this live performance that made me feel like it was necessary for this list.

Lots of energy, and probably not a minute too long (or short).

Kinda fun, and nice and short.

The amount of passion and fire in this concert is incredible. It shows exactly why live performance (especially early rock performances) are much better than studio records IMO. This list needs more albums like that.

This is a blast of rock and roll that captures the energy of one of the greats. Without his awful inhumanity he would have been so much more.

This was really solid and pretty fun

3-4 Great Balls of Fire 5+

Live at the Star-Club Hamburg Generally not a fan of live albums so wasn’t looking forward to this. There’s two versions on Tidal, a German release and what I presume is the UK/US release, but it only has 8 songs and different track listing from what’s on Wikipedia, but at 22 minutes I thought at least it would be over quickly. It’s nice to have my expectations and assumptions turned on their head though, I thought this was great. The energy is fucking nuts. Despite Jerry-Lee being an objectively terrible human being his piano playing is superb on this, and you can genuinely feel his stage presence and showmanship in the audio. The band, particularly the drummer, are great too. Pretty much straight ahead rockabilly/rocknroll playing but they absolutely stomp. Just read it’s the drummer from The Animals. As a side note, I’ve been listening to that History of RocknRoll in 500 songs podcast and, due to musician union rules in the 60s backing bands weren’t allowed to go to the US from the UK and vice versa and take other musicians jobs. So if a singer like Jerry Lee Lewis or Gene Vincent or Muddy Waters went on tour to the UK they had to use UK musicians as a backing band, which is how I guess Barry Jenkins ended up on here. Anyhow, the classics are all present and correct, delivered with manic intensity, but I really love the version of Money. Great choice of song, although Money was released very early in their history, Motown hadn’t quite become the musical force and phenomenon by early 64, so it’s an interesting choice. Maybe a nod to the Beatles cover, or a nod to blues, country and RocknRoll branching out into what would become soul. Or like Lennon he just liked the literal message. Love the version of Your Cheating Heart too, a lot of tenderness in his vocal and a nice drop in tempo before the finish. Whole Lotta Shakin’ absolutely slaps/bangs/fucks, as the kids would say. Kind of tempted to go 5. As a snapshot of primal RocknRoll it’s absolutely amazing, but it is a live album, so maybe it doesn’t count as a a proper ‘album’, whatever that means. So I’ll go 4, but if everyone else goes 5 I’ll change it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Just lots of fun. When rock n roll was young.

Another nostalgia blast. Interesting to hear his life performance, and to know how much he was influenced by other early rock, and R&B artists.

the 22 minute, 8 track version on streaming platforms contains more aura than i was ready to experience in an album from 1964. jerry lee lewis plays piano with bravado, beatings on the keys and gliding through glissandos, and sings with raw energy including screams, purrs, growls, croons, and shouts. i will definitely look for the other 15 minutes.

When I saw that this was another live album I trembled in fear as I recalled the day where I had to sit through all of Deep Purple's Made in Japan. Imagine my surprise and glee when I checked the runtime and the whole album was only a few minutes longer than Space Truckin'... anyways best songs were Money, Great Balls Of Fire, Lewis' Boogie, and Your Cheating Heart. I rock with this runtime so heavy and the songs are actually so fun so another 4 for the books

fun, high energy & good live recording

i am a jerry lee lewis fan

fast and loud. super fun. my first grade teacher did the call and response “goodness gracious” and we’d say “great balls of fire” fun to hear where that came from

I really liked these songs; the live setting was high energy and made it exciting, and the whole thing was 22 minutes. Minus one for Jerry Lee Lewis being a creep.

Recording and releasing an absolute fire late pre-Beatles era rock stomper of a live recording? Four stars. Marrying your 13 year old cousin? Zero stars. This rating is about the record, which is very good and entertaining.

Excellent live album! Certainly a trailblazing effort for live recordings capturing Jerry's raw style.

High energy classics that almost make you forget that he married his own cousin, who was underaged.

Me lo he pasado en grande, pero quizás se me ha hecho un poquito repetitivo

A controversial artist, to be sure. Had no idea he only just died a couple of years ago. Objectively, this is excellent. Early rock’n’roll. No doubt about his talent or the intensity of his performance. He was definitely dynamic. He may have had the personality of a shit-covered hornet, but the bitch could play. And his influence is undeniable.

It’s hard to ignore just how much of an arsehole Jerry Lee Lewis was, but it is most certainly worth it to sit back and appreciate his immense stage presence, condensed into an easily digestible and enjoyable 22 minutes. The fast-paced mix of highly energetic tracks is driven by Lewis’ piano work and enveloping vocals, the listener launched from one to the next in quick succession. A truly monumental performance, and record.

Spotify is a fucking mess and has this album missing 4 songs (5 tracks), but fortunately they exist on other Jerry Lee Lewis live comps and someone compiled them into the album as it's supposed to be. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2ByHepTROnG0HoQqsYIFXe?si=bbc8abdbd1a44790 When taken as a whole, it's a pretty fantastic document of one of rock's legendary live performers at close to his peak. It rips right along, and you basically know every song already. A fun listen!

this guy sucked ass. I enjoyed listening to this a lot. It is very funny to hear people screaming "Jerry! Jerry! Jerry" in the most German ass accents imaginable.

Jerry Lee doing his thing in 64. This covers his big hits and captures the frenetic energy he would deliver.

A strong live performance, sehr gut

Gem of a surprise. So much energy and thunder in that performance, totally had me smiling through what I thought would be corny old rock and roll songs. Point taken off for him being a wrong’un though.

Filthy lunatic but boy oh boy could he rock the house down.

Finally a gem I never heard. Jerry Lee is rocking. A short intense record, perfect. 4* It seems the American pressing has a different song selection. Now I gotta look for a definitive pressing. Found it, "The Killer Live 1964-1970" Wikipedia has the track listing in the order it was performed.

The album is amazing and willd. Too bad he was an awful human to the women in his life and a child rapists and bigamist

I know, I know, the guy was a sexual predator. I will rate his personal life a one or zero stars. But this album demonstrates a rock and roll energy that I don’t think existed in many people in 1964. The guy had musical magic in him. You can try, but good luck not tapping along to this one.

I don't know much about Jerry Lee Lewis aside from the fact that he was one of the pioneers of Rock N' Roll and also his terrible marriage controversy. I think the latter almost tainted his image for me, and maybe his legacy, but this album still seems highly praised and talked about so I tried to go into it without that knowledge polluting my judgments. This is a live album adapting the sounds of classic Rock N Roll in their most rudimentary and classic forms. Rock's often associated with the guitar I'd say, at least for me, but here Jerry offers just as much, if not more viscera on the piano. When matched with the drums and his singing style, the piano playing' lightning-fast and groovy presence is only made more grand. The most standout aspect is Jerry's "boogie woogie" style of playing, it just sounds iconic and takes me back to this time. "Money" may be the best example of this, there's something so raw about the presentation but at the same time, its contents prove to be highly organized and calculated. "Great Balls of Fire", maybe more iconic, is so immediate and sounds like a perfect encapsulation of what this type of rockabilly music should be, with bouncy basslines and hilariously placed piano slides. The vocals are also over the top, in a good way. I also really enjoyed the longer closer "Whole Lotta' Shakin Goin' On" which has a pretty great guitar solo (that's still mixed very quietly under the drums). For a 1964 live album, this album still sounds incredible as well. The piano and vocals feel like the stars here, but the drums are capable of keeping up with the tremendous pace Jerry plays at. I've seen videos of Jerry live before and have seen just how crazy he is with the piano, using all parts of his body like his feet on the instrument. I don't know if he does that here because it all sounds too organized and well done, but it's the image I had in my head the whole time. The version of this album I listened to was very short, and because of that, I think it was super easy to enjoy it from front to back. I do think a lot of the parts sound sort of the same, which is inevitable considering the limited nature of this performance's live roster. I don't consider this to be a flaw since it still all sounds really good at the end of the day. I don't like the slower "Your Cheating Heart", but aside from that, I enjoyed my time with this thing. It's one of those oldies records that still packs a punch to this day while still sounding very much of its time.

großartig

pedo :(

Just imagine being part of this crowd, the energy was amazing

Damn, sure would’ve been fun to be at this show. Jerry really rocks and rolls and shreds that piano. His energy is wild. I love it. Feels like his whole soul comes out on stage. Definitely a party!

This could be my favorite live album so far. Great energy from the singer and the band.

3.5/5 So much energy in this performance. You have to dance on this. Made me really happy. Short but powerful.

Me encanta! Pero alguien me puede decir que está diciendo en la primera canción?

22 minutes. Done before breakfast. Fast paced and good.

Bra jäkla drag under galoscherna och svårt att inte ryckas med. Det här är ju en show man inte hade tackat nej till att se live.

I have a soft spot for roots rock type stuff like this. Can see how it would have ripped at the time. However, obvs colored by the artist's modern reputation.

What an absolute psychopath. I don't love live records but this suits Jerry Lee Lewis.

Has some good energy to it and flows nicely

Rock n Roll

Great rock and roll music when listened to without context.

A little tip for listening to Jerry Lee Lewis, is to do so without ever checking his Wikipedia page in detail. Would have been a fantastic gig to be at too.

Only 20 minutes, but what a crazy 20 minutes!

Wish I had been there lol

Impressive live set. Not a dancer, but the piano really made me want to get up and move.

If only it were longer. Don’t tell me his set was actually 22 minutes. I guess when you put as much of yourself into a performance as he did into this, you burn out pretty quick. Damn this was a fun listen though. Absolutely classic rock n roll and rockabilly songs performed by a legendary performer. The guitar solos sounded so ahead of their time, both in style and in tone. It’s easy to see how much of an innovator he was at his peak. Nothing beats the energy he put into these performances. 4 stars.

favourite song: great balls of fire loads of fun and fairly short. just full of energy

I am quite conflicted about this one. He seems personally abhorrent, but my general policy is not to knock art for that (though I'd hesitate to put money in his pocket). He is an amazing musician and I love this genre, but most of these songs (the best ones) are not his and his versions aren't particularly transformative. Also, I am generally not a fan of live recordings. All that being said, I can't stop listening to this, so I will settle at a 4.

So are we judging the album or the person? I read some reviews and I thought this was about the music. There is no question to this man’s talent and contribution to early rock and roll.

The feel is kinda all over the place, sometimes it’s cool sometimes I don’t like it. The feel on the second tune is huge. Overall pretty sick

This was fun. But jeez…don’t marry your cousin

Although it's not my type of music particularly, it's iconic.

Surprised by how much I liked it. Songs are fast and just really good. Knew almost Al of them. No one has played piano quite like him

He may have been a dodgy geezer but he could belt out a tune. Great Balls of Fire is 🔥 Simpsons reference: Yes

It came in, it did its thing, it left. Just great stuff, love a walking bass line, not quite 5 star but nothing to complain about

Fun album, and short. Probably as crazy as a punk rock concert as far as relative energy compared to the mainstream at the time. I heard he was basically insane. 3.5/5

Lots of classics on here

A riveting rock 'n' roll live performance that I'm certain had everyone up and moving, immersed in the moment.

Niceeeeeeeeeeee

Not a lot to say about Live at the Star Club, Hamburg that hasn't been said. It's full of explosive energy and timeless rock and roll songs performed with passion and everyone there is having a riot of a time. It's less than 23 minutes too! Shame JLL was one of the worst humans around, it taints the entire experience, but the music in isolation gets 4/5. Not a 5/5 because there are too many covers.

Really made the young girls scream!

So much great energy from Jerry Lee Lewis. Loved that. Great music. 8/10

Fun little jazz album. Was an enjoyable listen but not too much other than that to write home about. Goodness gracious great balls of fire. 7/10

The Killer! Not sure how I have never heard this one. The energy just kind of jumps off this record. Loved it.

I didn't want to like this (underage incest marriage and worse) but I did. Would be impossible not to get sweaty from dancing to this.

The blurb from the book tipped the hand a bit here, but the really great thing about this record is the enthusiasm and intensity. You can really feel, esp in the opening numbers, Jerry is just bursting with energy and the rest of the band is just hanging on for dear life. It would be cringey and awful if it weren't so fun and exhilarating. I daresay that piano was worse for wear by the end of this show. Also it's easy to see why/how Jerry Lee Lewis became a star, if this is what his live performances were like.

Eine ADHS Explosion des am 29.9.35 geborenen Interpreten. Er „Rockt“ die Bühne in Hamburg und „rollt“ einen Hammer nach dem anderen raus .. „Great Balls of Fire“, „ Long Tall Sally“ & „ Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On“. Auch wenn es nicht ganz meine Musik ist, ist die Platte zur Wiederholung dringend empfohlen 😊

Makes me want to get up and move! Jerry Lee Lewis...Often imitated, never duplicated!

Hey, it's fun. "Shabadabadingdong" vibe. You know the kind. Keeps me bobbing. 4/5 - "Just slightly above my '3' average, I think I really wouldn't mind listening to it again.

Liked his music

Man after reading the history of this guy, he is batshit insane. However, just judging his music, this guy rips it up. Bring the passion, the energy, and for the time the new sound. 4/5 Favorite Songs: Great Balls of Fire, Good Golly, Miss Molly Least Favorite:

old live music are the best better than pre-recorded

Love a bit of Boogie Woogie. Short and sweet

Love the incredible punk-like energy . Great recording and lots of fun to listen to.

This was actually awesome. Studio recordings of these songs are soooo boring but I felt the energy in the live recording. Enjoyed this one.

Hadn’t heard this album before or really heard his live voice. It was great. His studio tracks have an echo effect and it waters down his powerful pipes.

All the hits on one album.

Wow. So much energy!

Good Golly Miss Molly! Lots of energy on this live album!

22 minutes of "high school," "boogie," and "rock." Always fun. Always creepy.

Jerry Lee Lewis hurtles through a set of rock-'n'-roll classics at breakneck speed. Just listening to the recording is exhausting. Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: Good Golly Miss Molly Date listened: 15/01/24

1.14.24

Excellent music. Unfortunately, I've heard it so much that it feels old to me.

I've been a fan and I'm glad this is on the 1001 for the few people who have never heard Jerry Lee. That said, while he's talented, it's clear he's repurposing black soul and R&B for white audiences, for the most part. Great Balls of Fire and Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On are absolute all time classics, though. I guess I'm going to give this a four strictly on the basis of how influential Jerry Lee was. Just a great rollicking piano sound!

A lot of the songs sounded very similar after the first few, but very fun foot-stomping music. Great as a live album as you can hear the response of the crowd, which just eggs him on even more. Enjoyed it.

Sounds like some music that would play at a fancy restaurant. Actually kinda enjoyed it but would have enjoyed more if it wasn’t live. -B

Brutal. Puro rock'n'roll

Totally rocking album! The level of energy must have been nuts for a concert in the mid 60s. I feel like I was watching him live. Very glad to have heard this album and a lot of the hits included were surprising.

Good performance. Live album

Too much piano noise...his voice does not sound great...sounds like he is yelling throughout the songs! Oh well

alright, so jerry lee lewis is fun. let'ss see. This was a lot of fun. the right album to get through a rough morning.

Fun, good party album. I find it a bit samey, can't see me listening to the album through again by myself

Classic stuff

Dance music!

According to Wikipedia, this is considered one of the wildest and greatest live rock albums ever. I can see it - this album at times has almost a manic energy that is tantalizing yet accessible at the same time. Incredibly sincere recording captures an intimacy that you don't hear form a lot of older albums.

The music is really fun but this guy gives me the creeps. But today we're just talking about music so 4 stars from me.

Not to bad for an incestuous pedophile

i imagine this was fantastic live, i didn’t mind the live recording either because it didn’t distract from the actual songs

Now THIS is a Christmas album. Nothing says Christmas quite like a rockabilly running off and marrying his 13 year cousin. Just for good measure, his backing band on this album is named the Nashville Teens. I guess it's true what they say. The heart wants what the heart wants. Or more accurately, the heart wants what the dick wants. But get past your preconceived feelings about the Killer, and just enjoy this. He might have been a racist pedophile for a good chunk of his life, but that doesn't mean he couldn't rock. Just like OJ murdering two people doesn't make him a bad running back.

I enjoyed this quite a bit. While the songs are mostly very simplistic, the energy is palpable. I am a sucker for live albums, and this did not disappoint.

All the hits you want to hear in one live set.

Old fashioned rock and roll.

4.4 Probably should be rated five star. Jerry Lee is a madman and absolutely rips it up. I got a kick out of the bass player being barely able to keep up. The version I listened to was only 20 minutes, it looks like there is a 40 minute album that I will have to get my hands on.

Goodness gracious.

he certainly plays as though his piano's on fire

This rips so hard.

E' stato un album piacevole da ascoltare, divertente.

Rockabilicious!

Very intense performance over 20 minutes. Lots of energy and passion is coming across! One thing I was wondering while listening: I'm not sure how many of these songs are his vs covers.

This is one of the roots of rock and roll. Ironically I think every song on the album is a cover but you can see how the sound influenced everything to come. 4 stars for me!

Dude sounds like a hell of a live performer. I had no idea what to expect from this, but I really enjoyed it. Managing to hit the vocals so well while playing at such a high energy level is pretty impressive.

Incredibly impressive live performance, I was not in the mood for it though. I'll give it the benefit of the doubt.

Great energetic set, probably the only thing you need to have from Jerry Lee

One of the best live albums ever from sheer energy but it actually has a little bit of a lacking tracklist despite its short length.

Oh man, Killer alright. Imagine being in the crowd for this one 🤯

Very solid live album. While nowadays these songs seem cliche, that’s only because of how important they are to the foundation of everything we hear today. While it’s surprisingly well produced and mixed for a concert from 60 years ago, Jerry Lee Lewis energetic performance is what really shines through.

Nice rockin' album, JLL is great live It was a little short though, 22m is half what I expect from an album

Great livealbum. You can really hear the joy the band is having on stage.

Loved this. Have to put the man’s character aside because that’s not the point of this and, let’s face it, many would be excluded if we took their character in to account. Such energy. Would love to have been there

Cooking with great balls of fire

Listening to Live at the Star Club feels like witnessing the evolution of swing into rock and roll. There are swing elements which make you just want to dance. Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On is a great example of a song that's just meant for dance. You could picture it playing at a 60s high school prom. But then you have songs like Money and Great Balls of Fire where Jerry really belts. Funny enough, it reminds me of the Max Rebo Band from Star Wars which I'm guessing drew influence from Jerry. This album feels very Elvis as well. Just feels like 1960s in a time capsule.

Lekker energiek, maar moet je wel met aandacht naar luisteren, want het is zeker geen achtergrondmuziek.

Really enjoyed it Appears bloke is a nonce married his 13 year old cousin

So many thoughts come up listening to this album. Jerry Lee Lewis was huge when my dad was a kid and I imagine him loving this music. I also want to look up why Hamburg was the hot spot for music back then. I grew up in Germany as an American military brat and I bet it was a blast hanging out in Hamburg in the 1960s.

I'm not a fan of live albums, the production quality is never going to be as good as a studio and I don't think the audio of the audience adds much. But what does that matter when you have an artist performing at the top of his game with more energy than Robin Williams on a kilo of cocaine. This album is frenetic, non stop, top tier rock and roll. All the more shame he's such a shit human being.

Heerlijke swing rock&roll, lijkt me een prachtige live show om bij te zijn. Album is wat mij betreft te kort.

This is like metal.. but it's blues. I love it, it's rocking, the energy is out of this world. A full-on performance. I wonder if Freddie Mercury liked Jerry Lee Lewis? I hear a lot of Mercury's vocal traits and phrasing (in High School Confidential in particular (I'm writing this whilst listening to that tune). A really enjoyable listen, far exceeded my expectations.

Pretty wild… a lot of energy. About on par with that MC5 album, but rock ‘n roll piano. Fast and aggressive but somewhat repetitive. I feel like it’s a 3 for me. For 1964 he’s pretty off the rails, though isn’t he. Ok maybe a 3.5 for Long Tall Sally. He’s nuts! Definitely an experience.

A punk album before punk was a thing. You can feel the raw energy in this live performance of early-rock classics.

Rockin' an a Rollin'

Enjoyed this a lot. High energy, great vibes, band played their arses off and the crowd were loving it.

I'm not a huge fan of a live album, that being said I'm enjoying this a lot more than I expected to. These are all songs I've heard before, the energy is high and it's quite enjoyable. Will I listen to it again ever? Probably not, but I'm glad I listened to it once. Also, I love a tight 2:30 minute song so much, I need more of those.

Great entertainer, questionable role model.

I usually don't care all that much for live albums. This was pretty great though. All of his hits, short and sweet, and sounded really good.

I know, I know. But this sure does get you up out of your seat!

I really enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Such a variety of genres in one album

It's extremely fucking difficult to get past the "Eww, he married his 13 year old cousin, but this is an exceptional live album.

This guy yells a lot

Precursor del rock n'roll, disco en directo con una gran fuerza y energía. Ritmos electrizantes a base de piano y buena voz. Para conservar durante muchos años

Lots of hits

Intéressant, un album de rock dont le piano est le point central. Il est évident que Lewis était une bête de scène. Un plaisir à ne pas bouder

It's amazing what a redneck cousin-marrying pedophile can do behind a piano.

After work porch chillin on a cool September night!

He deserves all the heat he gets for his personal life. Honestly, he probably deserves way more. However, this performance is sensational. There's no two ways about it.

Allllll of the classics! This was fun and would have been a great show to see live. Just a basic good time. 4/5 stars since nothing really jumped out at me but I enjoyed it!

A pretty good album but in my opinion Little Richard still stays winning for this early rock and roll boogie blues vibe. I like how he sings though he just GOES for it.

The second best rock musician named Jerry in the 60’s and 70’s. This was pretty cool to listen to, tons of energy and kind of reminiscent of back to the future? Good stuff for a Friday commute

Too bad this guy was a creep. I have this one a listen as I don’t know much of his stuff. This was a great performance. The energy that comes through is authentic and impressive.

That would have been a fun concert to attend, every song was a classic rockabilly song. I had to look up who the original artists were for most of these, they were covered by the Beatles, Elvis, and Hank Williams. Overall a great example of early rock and roll

Rock n roll, baby. 4/5

Wow this was better than I was expecting. I’d heard Jerry Lee put on a raucous live show and this seems to be an excellent document of it. He rolls through a well chosen set of covers and originals with a ton of power and speed, I could hear glimpses of punk in his playing. He controls the audience and then blend well with the recording. His piano playing also stomps and is a clear highlight.

Despite the fact that he was not the best person, as far as I understood, this album is really good!

C'était vachement bien. Short but sweet, mais c'est pas dommage pour un genre qui a vite tendance à être répétitif autrement. Un type de musique qui gagne sans doute beaucoup à être écouté sur un enregistrement live comme ici.

Really enjoyed the album, gave it five listens, enjoyed each listen more

Very good

Not my preferred genre of music but you can absolutely feel the intense energy in his performance - he really set the place alight!

Actually good for a live album. Dude was going crazy on the piano especially.

Elvis who? Mr. Lewis doesn’t miss a beat here. The man could certainly light up a crowd. What really impressed me on this record though was the drums. One Barry Jenkins (of The Animals fame, not the Academy Award winning director). Jenkins just let’s it rip here, like a modern punk drummer. Obviously you know most of the tracks here, and have probably heard them a thousand times, but I really liked the live setting here. It allows for some great band chemistry between the band that you just don’t get in studio.

That Nutty Pianist sure can tickle those keys, can’t he?

He was a piece of shit in multiple different ways. He plays the piano real nice, but still a piece of shit. Did I mention he's a piece of shit?

за 20 минут кайфа и энергетики не могу поставить ниже

Album 125 of 1001 Jerry Lee Lewis - Live at the Star-Club Hamburg Rating : 4 / 5 Favorite Track : Good Golly, Miss Molly I'll comment on the music, not the musician. Great live performance. Awesome, classic tunes. Would have been fun to see live. I think he may have made an appearance at one of the Charlie Daniels' Volunteer Jams I went to, but not sure. Good stuff.

Fuck this piece of shit. Great album though. Favorite track: Money

Liked it a lot. Great feel. Not much else to say.

The more I listen to live albums the more I appreciate them. The energy on this is electric.

22 minutes on fire

ENERGY. This was a firecracker.

Jerry was shooting flames out of his piano in the first half of this album but then he cooled off at the end

very good album, old one but good.

Nope, he's not as good as Little Richard. Yarp, he's a massive scumbag. Nope, very few (if any) of these are originals. Yarp, it is, unfortunately, a live album. Nope, I wouldn't turn down a chance to witness one of those concerts first hand. And that's speaking as somebody who actively dislikes live music performances, preferring not to be jostled by bellends who also happen to display no ability to use a khazi properly.

Great energy, short little banger of an album

Not my thing but clearly a good time

Hey, for old geezer music, this totally rips. The recording may not sound the best, but what do you expect from a live album from 1964? This record gave me a much better understanding of JLL as a performer. He and the band exhibit a raw energy that can't be contained, like a runaway snowball barrelling down a hill. You can tell the frenzied audience is in the palm of his hand too. I've never been the HUGEST fan of classic '50s rock n' roll, (there's only so many times I can listen to 12-bar blues in a row) but this is certainly one of the finest examples I've heard.

What a wild performance! I played this one on the speakers in the house and Dree and I were both laughing at the way he riffs and wails through these songs. So fun. Shame that only about half the album is available to stream. I’d love to hear the whole thing straight through.

Condensa a importância do Jerry Lee Lewis para o rock, uma performance que é uma verdadeira explosão de emoção.

This is definitely one of the first hard rock performances. Of course fantastic piano skills by Jerry and his band did a great job too. The crowd was also really into it. Simple, short and sweet.

"Words cannot describe — cannot contain — the performance captured on Live at the Star Club, Hamburg, an album that contains the very essence of rock & roll...Live at the Star Club is extraordinary - the purest, hardest rock & roll ever committed to record...He sounds possessed, hitting the keys so hard it sounds like they'll break, and rocking harder than anybody had before or since. Compared to this, thrash metal sounds tame, the Stooges sound constrained, hardcore punk seems neutered, and the Sex Pistols sound like wimps. Rock & roll is about the fire in the performance, and nothing sounds as fiery as this; nothing hits as hard or sounds as loud, either. It is no stretch to call this the greatest live album ever, nor is it a stretch to call it the greatest rock & roll album ever recorded. Even so, words can't describe the music here — it truly has to be heard to be believed."

Really like this album. Brillianty fun and short. I knew it already and after discovering went back to it quite a lot. If there was a 4.5/5 I would give it that. JLL himself was clearly dodgy right enough.

Solid 5 but minus 1 point for being a pedo

Damn, it's interesting to hear a rock and roll album from the early to mid 60s that rocks quite as hard as this. But I don't know if I can give it full marks considering the comments. That dude really was a piece of shit, huh. Favourite: Long, Tall Sally

This was fun old school piano banging.

How the hell does Jerry Lee Lewis have so much energy? The dude is smashing the piano. The album it is 30 minutes nonstop, even between songs. Overall, it is a nice record. I liked the songs, liked the vibe, liked the concept.

This shit was good! Oh and the album slaps too!

Great live album. Wish I was there.

There is something about the classic, high energy rock'n'roll live albums from the heights of the genre craziness. I have never listened to Jerry Lee Lewis, but there is a lot of similarities in his voice and style with the one and only Elvis Presley. And I thoroughly enjoyed this album. It's extremely hard not to get drowned in this type of music. The only issue is that for me, five songs in a row in this style and I'm fed up. It's not made to be listened one after another on a random afternoon. It has to be all out, full energetic night, otherwise there is no reason to listen to it. But I'm glad I did, although once again, I don't think I would be coming to this album, or genre too often.

What a cool album! I sure do hope this guy isn't a racist pedo psychopath with a god complex - boy would that suck!

As someone who didn't know this singer previously, this was a fun little diddy.

classic JLL. I like the quotation marks on title.

Amazing energy.

*listened to full version on YT rather than shortened version available for streaming* HL: "Hound Dog", "Great Balls of Fire", "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On", "Money"

Puro rock and roll

me genera ganas de fumar adentro de un restaurante y tomar coca de vidrio

Another entry on the "great music, terrible person" list. Spotify's generated playlist was outstanding.

A tight 22 minutes of cardio endurance. Another solid musician who is also a terrible person

old but still worthy

бодренько, веселенько!

Jerry Lee Lewis was undoubtedly a sordid and crazy man but he sure knew how to put on a show. A rollicking, engaging, very fun live album that showcases his talent, especially on the piano. It’s quite short, clocking in at just about 22 minutes, but a lot of music is packed in there. Would definitely listen again. 4/5.

Ignoring the fact that he was one hellova arsehole, this is an incredible piece of live rock n roll...it sounds edgy, the mix is great and the piano is brilliant. Spotify cuts it down from 37 to 22 minute so I feel a bit cheated. Strong 4

Pretty classic rock and roll. They could go pretty hard with a piano!

Good album, but any time he said something about shaking your hips, I couldn't stop picturing him talking to a preteen and that was a buzz kill, to say the least

Pretty good 50s rock and roll.

High energy rock n roll!

That must've been a helluva show to be at. Creepy dude, great performer.

Alto astral, rock n roll das antiga

Exactly what i expected really, but performed live. pretty great tbf

Incredibly energetic and upbeat. It's a very short album but it's an excellent live album showcasing peak rockabilly.

I didn't know really any of Jerry's music other than Great Balls Of Fire before this album. He's got a really good lower register, but likes to do a lot of really interesting higher register things and falsettos which keep it interesting. His piano playing is just insane, plus the fact he's singing on top of it shows talent that is just levels above so many others. This album is a really interesting look into where it feels like swing and rockabilly really started transforming into rock and roll, and Jerry Lee Lewis plays both sides of that line very very well. Favorite Tracks: Great Balls Of Fire (of course), Good Golly Miss Molly, Long Tall Sally

Good stuff that. It's the good old moral dilemma of is the music ok even though he was a bit of a wrong un. Without really knowing much about what he did that made him a wrong un I'll score it seperate from the man.

Jerry Lee Lewis is a friend of mine. He lives in my coal shed and dances in the moonlit shadows. He hurt my butt with his gigantic mancock.

Married his 13 year old cousin, so gets marked up for that

Suverän livespelning. Hade fått fem om jag gillat musiken.

first listen a real tour de force

No paras de mover los pies!

I didn't think I was going to enjoy this but damn it was a great high energy performance.

A little crazy, but no one's got the flair like this guy. Just a fun rock and roll time

Love the energy of this album

JLL sounds absolutely incredible here. The production of this live album is great. His song choice is amazing and from top to bottom this thing hits.

He died the other day, the crazy wrong 'un. This is meant to be 37 minutes long but only 22 minutes is available on streaming, not even YouTube seems to have it. So god knows what's on there. Hound Dog is one of them. Review: I believe the word is 'rollicking'.

Great live album

Great live album. Star off for being a wrong ‘un

Predictably raucous and great. I’ve heard him do the same stuff (except for Money) a million times & he never fails to entertain. The audience chanting his name was pretty cute. A legend only just taken from us.

Wow, this is a real blast. Short, sharp, fast and loud (with a moment of respite for Your Cheatin' Heart). It's a greatest hits of early rock and roll blasted out at high power before a live audience. No fat, no time-wasting. The drummer is a wildman, and Jerry Lee is pumping that piano hard, and vocally wailing. Not as much screaming as Little Richard (the obvious comparison), but strong and hard. I used to think I didn't like live albums, but then I started counting really great live albums, and I think I would have to put this on that list. There is something about the live intensity and interaction with the audience that transcends the studio work (sometimes). And you know how much I like a short album, and this certainly fits that bill, at a crisp 22 minutes. Not a lot of fat on it. RIP, Killer. You were a deplorable human being, but you sure could rock and roll.

Fun little 20 minutes

Great! So energy filled

Just groove, I like it a lot. I don't know how much I'd play it over but at least I'd like to see such show live 4.25 / 5

Very nice live album with really great melodies and piano pieces. The energy is so good I love it and would gladly listen to it despite nothing particular about the singer and vocals in general. 4.5/5

Electric set, there’s no way anyone was sitting down at this show!

This is not the guy who plays the nutty professor

Wow, what a blast of pure energy this short, rollicking album is.

Pure energy, visceral and fearsome. However, one’s always hated most of these songs, which are basic and childish. JLL is a livewire and a screamer, no doubting the stage presence or commitment. Also the insanity (see wife, 13-year-old cousin as). Grudgingly rating up because it does sound like a landmark and production is surprisingly crisp for a nearly 60-year-old recording.

Goes like a train. Shame he’s a massive weirdo because WHAT a worker

kick ass live musician. Terrible human but whatever.

Really good live performer. Would've loved to have been there.

Good old Rock and roll. I wish I was in this concert in Hamburg!

A bit sloppy and messy, like live albums often are. Really enjoyable, and interesting, and sounds like it was an awesome gig. Weirdly also sounds like he was already kind of a heritage act, even so close to his heyday. Loved it!

I usually don't like live albums, but this was a good one. Lots of energy, lots of fun.

Despite how famous and popular this dude apparently was I have never heard if him before this! I am always partial to a bit of early rock and roll tbh. From reading more into his life it sounds like he was an over-hyped annoyingly arrogant momma's boy though haha! This gig sounds like an extremely good time!! I loved the songs and think I would have loved being there, listening in my headphones while vacuuming was quite a visceral experience where I could really imagine the dancing and the sweat and the drinks, fun!

I know how important JLL in terms of rock piano and how wild he was. Great Balls of Fire is a great doc about him, naturally has a troubling side as well... Fantastic nutty piano playing I can't comprehend, a total riot

One of the greatest live performances of all time. Nothing really beats the passion and stage presence that this album presents.

This is an amazing album, it's just a shame about Jerrys personal life. It makes it really hard to rate this as high as it should be, but taking that out of the equation as much as possible, and just rating the music this deserves to be high.

Sadly, it was a live show but the rock&roll is jammin'

Listened a bit, it was fun but not in a Jerry Lewis way, more in a Jerry Lee Lewis

Great classic rock and tons of energy.

Terrific!

You have live albums and then you have live albums

On the one hand, I think Jerry Lee Lewis is a gross human being, and no sane country would have allowed him to marry his 13 year old cousin (once removed). One the other hand, this concert would have been fucking ecstatic to attend. You can feel the electricity of Lewis's energy through the recording. The only real criticism that I have of it is that it features very little of his original songs (only Great Balls of Fire and Lewis Boogie). I like all of the covers he does though. I suppose that it's okay to like this one since the bad man died long ago (checks Wikipedia). HOLY FUCKING SHIT, DID YOU KNOW THAT JERRY LEE LEWIS IS STILL ALIVE?? DUDE RELEASED AN ALBUM IN 2014. What the fuck? 4/5

Blistering. 4

Tons of energy and fun to listen to. Great rock and roll. Sad that the linked album is missing songs.

The energy is unreal and the piano is piercingly powerful! 3.7⭐

fuck yah. I like jerry lee lewis. Any live shows coming up?

Enjoyed listening though more of a history lesson than something I'd put on. Would have been so dope to go to a show like this.

Great fun this

I can definitely feel the energy I feel like it's the inspiration for many lo fi recordings in terms of the quality of the mix. I can hear MC5, The Stooges, The Black Keys

Eh...I mean it was pretty solid. Jerry Lee Lewis is a talented vocalist and performer, no big shock here. Giving this album a solid four stars because it has this great strong energy, but it's not quite an album with no skips. Side note, this rating is based on enjoyability, not the character of the individual. Lewis was a predator and I'd be remiss to review an album of his without mentioning he's gross. Fave track: High School Confidential, if you don't listen too closely to the words, which betray a creepy fixation on high schoolers.

Excellent music from an absolute trashcan of a human.

I really dig it

This is such a fiery rock-'n'-roll live performance. It really convinces you that this genre is a lot more than old-fashioned honkey tonk and blues numbers. It has the feverish energy of a bustling church dance. Too bad the dude is a pedophile though lol.

I mean, it's 22 minutes of sheer, frantic fire. While most of his contemporaries were simply imitating the energy of black rock-and-rollers, you can tell that Jerry Lee felt that fire in his bones. As a result, this performance feels like it belongs in the same conversation with James Brown instead of over with Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly where he often gets lumped. It's a fantastic performance and a great bit of musical history from a deeply problematic individual. Docked a star because "High School Confidential" feels especially gross in the light of his incestuous, pedophilic marriage. Sorry, man. Can't get past that.

Lots of songs banged into 22 minutes... I finally know where the song Money featured in Tommyboy came from

A fun and high energy album. He played the hits. Definitely a good listen.

Big fan of rock and roll. Good vocals and good listening. The album is short, so it is perfect for one sitting. Lots of classics on here, but not a big fan of live albums.

Short and sweet

Lots of fun

Apparently he was as good as pianist as he was a terrible human being. The album is great, full of energy and good rock but it's hard to enjoy knowing the man behind the music.

Jesus, Jerry, you're going to break the piano. Best track: Mean Woman Blues

Qué disco más entretenido. En realidad, el rock and roll es así, pero este disco tiene una gran versión en vivo de Great Balls of Fire

No paras de mover los pies!

I listened a lot of covers by Mexican artists, but finally i listened the OG of Rock & Roll, good live.

Entertaining rock n roll live album. Jer-ry, Jer-ry!

Love the early keyboard driven RnR. Would have been great to see Jerry Lee Lewis perform live in his prime. Great songs and performance but dated enough that I can’t round up.

It was okay. Good rock and roll, lot of energy for the live show. Little boring to be honest.
