Reviews (page 6 of 10)

An incredible document of what an incredibly flawed human was once capable of.

I've never heard someone use their own name in so many songs

I love to see a 22 minute album. Very fun, this type of music would sound amazing live, still fun to listen to though.

55/100. Not a fan of the music or the man himself, but as a live album it’s a decent performance.

crazy how listening to this while making icons really soothed my soul... i always have mixed opinions about live albums but i really liked this one! it was fun!

So this guy sucks. The album however, is pretty good. It's no where close to Sam Cooke Live At Harlem Square Club but serviceable nonetheless. His vocals were pretty nice but I won't be listening to this one again.

I liked how close/loud the instruments seemed to be to the mics. Don’t have much to say about him that hasn’t already been said

22 mins is not an album. If you like 12 bar blues and rock and roll this will be enjoyable but all the tracks are very similar. Some well-known songs in there

Complicated to rate this one because I generally dislike live albums and Jerry Lee is a piece of shit. However, his influence is undeniable IMO. My favorite live band is Low Cut Connie and Adam's performance style is directly influenced by JLL. Adam wrote a reflection about JLL when he died, published by Spin. (https://www.spin.com/2022/11/jerry-lee-lewis-tribute/)

i get that JLL has his place in rock and roll history, but i feel like this specific album doesn't really capture all that he had to offer. i enjoyed this album, i did, but its only about 20 minutes. I have to imagine the man played a longer show than that, and so im curious why this snapshot of a performance is lauded as one of the greatest of all time. a bit odd in that respect. again, i liked it, but its just not enough of an ode to really pay tribute to the man. also, take this all with a grain of salt. dude married his 13 year old cousin so... thats gross

Thought this was a super cool live album to do and to actually hear how Jerry Lee played live but by the end it all kinda ran together. I was hoping for at least changing It up on some of the songs but it all sounded like great balls of fire.

Absolute classic and so important to rock ‘n’ roll. It is hard to separate the man from the music and from pedophile to the stories of abuse left a trail of ex-wives dead and alive.

Love live energetic music.

Nice little live album. Goodness gracious

solidan rokenrol. ništa posebno, ništa loše

Prometheus of modern Rock and Roll album from a piano perspective. Mostly 50's covers but considered one of the best live albums of all time. You can hear all of the ingredients that influenced the sound and the sounds that influenced later generations. Also a great reminder that your grandparents still got down in their time. "How'd you meet grandma, grandpa?" "At a Jerry Lee Lewis concert, I saw her from across the dance floor. She had a dynamite smile and an ass that wouldn't quit." Fun listen.

Czuć w tych piosenkach ducha rock and rolla.

His Wikipedia page is something else. Just gonna ignore that, the live performance was good, music was good enough but kinda samey by the end Will I listen to again: 14%

Ok live album. The mix doesn’t highlight Jerry’s piano and vocals. But the energy is clearly there.

Yet another short, fun live album. (Again, live albums shouldn’t be here because they’re like greatest hits albums but I yield). I don’t know if I ever heard a full album from the taciturn, young cousin-loving, driving impaired Jerry Lee Lewis. This album had a lot of energy and fun. Top tracks: “High School Confidential”—is this meant to be ironic?, “Money”

--High School Confidential...fun! --Money...I think this is the first version of this song I've liked. Dude can play --Great Balls of Fire...I've heard better versions from him but it still rips --Good Golly Miss Molly...keeps the party going --Lewis' Boogie...not enough piano. More piano! --Your Cheating Heart...we slow the tempo down. It's almost like Jerry's hand can't handle slowing it down so he plays at double (triple?) speed to fit the new tempo --Long, Tall Sally...another toe tapping classic --Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On...things are starting to meld together but we're almost done. Short, sweet, and fun

The energy feels unreal for that time.

Rating: 2.8 I’m not easily swayed by the energy of live performance. The music was very enjoyable and the (surprisingly mush-mouthed) Jerry Lee Lewis had the crowd in the palm of his hands.

Catchy as hell, but I couldn’t stop thinking about what a horrible person he was.

Bare god musik. En anelse kontroversiel fyr dog hahah

Sounds like a great gig, uncomplicated and raw. Fantastic live recording. I suspect this one is in the list because JLL was such an influential figure in popular music - though enjoyed his peak before the concept of the album enjoyed its own. So as a record capturing an important musician, it's a good listen, as an important album, maybe less so.

403/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑

It’s not really my kind of thing, but it’s fast, fun, and relentlessly energetic. I also appreciate the tight runtime.

“we hope you’ll enjoy this little diddy”

A recording of a live concert at the Star Club. It must have been great if you were there. When you listen to it, you can feel the bubbling and steaming atmosphere, you can almost smell it. However, I don't find it so exciting as a recorded version. I won't be listening to it again any time soon. 3/5

There’s no denying this album is a powerhouse of energy, an explosion of raw rock ‘n’ roll that tears through everything in its path. Jerry Lee Lewis delivers an insanely intense performance, and it’s easy to see why it’s considered one of the wildest live albums ever recorded. But the style just doesn’t resonate with me. It feels too chaotic and dated for my taste, and while the energy is infectious, I’m glad rock music has evolved in other directions since then. 3/5

Decent, slightly 50s vibe to this. Makes your head want to bop. (Accidentally bloomin rated the wrong album, why is there no edit/undo buttonnnnnnnn?? Koffi Olomide does not have a 50s vibe!)

I know very little about Jerry Lee Lewis, aside from that he's *not* the same person as Jerry Lewis (thankfully), and he had something bad associated with him with underage girls. (I didn't realize until I read the Wikipedia entry that the scandal was that he married his 13-year-old cousin (first cousin once removed, so definitely *not* kissing cousins) about 6 years before this was recorded, so I guess she was finally older than 18 when this came out, but still a first cousin....) Backstory aside, this seems like it was a fun performance, and even though nearly all the songs are covers, he definitely infuses his own style and swagger. I've never been a big rock-n-roll fan, so there aren't any tracks that really stood out for me, although the opening track "Mean woman blues" is particularly intense-sounding. And the recording seems well-done for a live album in that era, although I really can't get behind Stephen Erlewine's (Allmusic) rant that "compared to this, thrash metal sounds tame, the Stooges sound constrained, hardcore punk seems neutered, and the Sex Pistols sound like wimps." But hey, he's a famous critic, and I'm not.

Would definitely be an amazing gig to go to

Classic tunes done in a classic style. Makes me feel both old and young.

It's fun, I knew most of the songs. But, would I seek it out? Would I intentionally play it? Probably not. 3

Good ole time rock n roll. Was a good listen

Takes kissing cousins to a new level

3.5/5 fun listen and great energy

Cool live album

Felt too dirty listening to it

Pretty good

Probably would have been unforgettable if I was there live dancing with my 60’s sweetheart. On Spotify and 60 years later, more forgettable.

great energy. will definitely revisit. almost a 4

7/10. Cool live performance, uncool live performer.

Impressive vocals and great performances from the band. This record is packed with upbeat tracks, with only a single song being a lower tempo. I feel like most of the tracks sounded too similar, with the only difference being the vocals at times. Favourite Track(s): Your Cheating Heart, Great Balls Of Fire Least Favourite Track(s): Long, Tall Sally

It’s good ‘ol time boogie-woogie rock’n’roll for sure especially since it is sort of the same song played eight different ways!

I am really liking these older live albums. It's fun to her them in this setting and to hear how they sounded live. A lot of times it's a lot heavier and a lot cooler than on the recordings of this period.

Dad- 8 Mom- 8 Mike- 6 Lori- 4.5 Michael- 5 Miles- 4 Cole- 4 Avg- 5.64

Cousin fucker extraodinaire, fires out a high energy live set at the (in)famous Star Club. Energetice, sleazy and sounds like great fun. Best Tracks: Great Balls of Fire; Good Golly Miss Molly; Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On

Great live album. Early rock and roll at its finest. Too bad Jerry Lee was a bit of a creep. This was recorded before he married his barely teenaged cousin, so I can separate the art from the artist just enough to give him credit for being an amazing performer at the time.

Surprisingly listenable for a live album--this recording captured JLL's frantic energy in a way that was fun and engaging. I enjoyed listening to this way more than I expected to, even if I'd probably never seek it out again. Standout track: Money

Meh, his past still gets me. Pass.

Classic

I am a sucker for Great Balls Of Fire. Just a fun, catchy jam. Sounded like a wild live performance overall and I hope those people got their money's worth for just 22 minutes of music! Feels like I can't go with anything else but a 3 here though.

Good energy. Nice and short. Pretty homogenous.

Just sounded like a good time boogie in Hamburg Germany

Jerry Lee Lewis is a piece of shit weirdo! Had to listen to this one on Youtube also as the one on AM was only 22 min. That being said the man seems like a genuine showman. Money is a great song. I know it's been covered a ton of times by different artists including Lewis himself. Solid but nothing crazy. I'm sure it was something back in 64 though.

Fun, but not something i'm going to remember much about.

In an industry full of pieces of shit it really takes effort to stand out as an exceptional piece of shit, and Jerry Lee does it many times over. But oh man, there is something about a guy who is like “I am evil, the devil speaks through me,” and then you listen to his live recordings and they make you think “This guy is evil. The devil is speaking through him!” Real dark energy here, kind of hard to look away. I liked it, I didn’t like that I liked it.

Surprisingly pretty good and very upbeat and full of energy but i will give it a 3 because i read his wikipedia page

Can't knock the energy, he's slapping the shit out of that pianer like (redacted) but on almost every song I thought, "Man, I wish I was listening to Little Richard right now" I'm not taking points off for being a piece of shit, even though he was an exceptionally shitty one, music history is basically a wall smeared with shit tbh.

Great Album, not great human

Energetic rock n roll. Fun

3/5 Rehellistä vanhan liiton rock'n rollia. Ehkä jopa kolmen puolen tähden arvoinen lyhyt taltiointi.

I guess everybody know Jerry Lee Lewis. And some of his songs are so well known that it's probably not wrong to argue that all grown-ups know them. That does not necessarily mean that you like the songs, and, well, the album is nice to listen to but I wouldn't put it on again.

Sounds like it was recorded through a tin can – and live albums? Not my thing. But hey, Jerry Lee's energy is hard to ignore.

A landmark, of course, but one's never liked these songs. The high energy grates after a while – the hootin' leads to little more than hollerin' and then devolves into basic screaming and banging which only goes so far. The novelty has long since worn off, but once a killer, always a killler, one supposes.

Definitely has its place in history, but his stuff has always felt a bit lightweight to me. Also, you know, the whole "marrying his teenaged cousin" thing kind of casts everything in a dark light.

Ymmärrän hyvin miksi olennaista. Toisaalta samaa biisiähän tuossa veivattiin levyn verran ja aika nopeesti tulee kyllästymispiste eteen

Rehellistä, menevää ja yksinkertaista rokettirollia! Kiva levy mutta yllättävän nopeasti blueskaava alkaa toistamaan itseään.

My streaming service has two versions of this album. A short (22 minutes) 8 track version and the proper (according to Wikipedia) 13 track, 37 minutes recording. Curiously one is titled in English and the other French. Regional licensing agreements, perhaps? Anyway... the longer version is more coherent. The recording isn't great from a technical sense, of its time perhaps. It is entertaining. More entertaining than I expected. Not really my thing, but I will give it 3/5.

Just fantastic rock n roll energy

Non-stop, balls to the wall, piano destroying energy. Minus points for an over-reliance on other musicians' material. Thrrrrrree rrrrrroling arrrrrrrs out of five.

Short and sweet. Fun to hear a 1960s audience lose their minds. Not sure if I’d listen to this live album rather than the studio recordings, though. 3/5

Onvervalst potje rock n roll, lekker energiek.

Personal digressions aside, this dude was a rocker and groundbreaking for the time. Would have been an interesting act to experience live, being so against the grain for the times. 3.5/5

With only 8 of the 13 songs available to listen to (I’m assuming due to licensing or contractual reasons), it’s hard to give a full review. That being said, for 22 minutes I was reminded just how bombastic and rock n roll this guy was, only to be reminded how creepy he was by marrying his 13 year old cousin. This is still a good listen and the primitive recording methods of the time really do present a rough raw in-your-face experience.

Enjoyable, but if you like stuff like this it’s way too easy to point to people that did it better (Little Richard…). Doesn’t really belong in the upper ranks to me

Quite the cocaine fueled performance! He’s like “alright boys, we’re gonna do this one double time!” You can understand why this is only 22 minutes. I struggle with live albums, especially if they become greatest hits. But it’s a solid performance and fun listen.

This dude prob should have named the song Middle School Confidential. Yuk. This is prob the best way to experience Jerry Lee. You really get a sense for his chaotic energy. That said, I’m having a hard time going up to 4*. It’s 22 minutes and the songs start to sound the same. Good. Not great. 3.5/5

Track listing for this on Spotify and YouTube music is weird - only eight tracks of the 13 and in a different order. But it is available as the first 13 tracks on this album: https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_m9BT71MRj_rhoIBDCTV5NRovhrq-pJD-w Wanted to give this a low score because, you know, JLL being such an asshole. But this was an exuberant lively performance that was hard to dislike.

Apple album had 8 songs but Wikipedia shows 13.

Albumi #145, 12.02.2025 Villiä menoa hurjalla energialla Länsi-Saksassa. Varsin mainio livepläjäys.

Correcto

It's fun to hear a guy be that excited with the piano, even though I feel there's only so many similar takes on the standard three chord blues I can take.

classic rock n roll

Short, sweet. Ignoring his personal history, a little slice of rock and roll.

3 feels harsh but the live recording audio quality makes the musicality hard to spot. I like Money as covered by the Sonics better.

Cracked out historic blues rock. Piano on, friend.

Interesting that this album is considered one of the greatest live albums of all time. There's no denying it's a great performance, but the "greatest ever" claims are probably coming from people who were alive at the time of the album's release, and have more of a personal connection to it.

The moment this popped up as my album I dreaded listening to it. And while I didn't care for the music itself so much, I was fascinated by how good it sounded for a live recording of the time. When I looked up this album evidently a big part of the positive reception the album received when it was released was the audio quality, with people surprised by the simplicity of the microphone setup. Also what was interesting was where it was recorded--Hamburg, the city where the Beatles essentially got their start--because evidently when Lewis's career went south due to his marriage controversy his people thought a comeback was imminent with a particular song only to be usurped on the radio by the recently invading Beatles.

Feel like super old rock, a little bit country

Not sure i needed this, but it was certainly a wild time.

pedophile :(

heard this guy was a POS... tunes r bangin tho

I feel bad for that drummer trying to keep up.

Man, shame JLL was such a gross scumbag, because the energy in this album is just unmatched. So much fun, but a bit icky knowing who the artist is.

Short, sharp, good energy

I think I got a contact amphetamine high from listening to this

Wow. What a great pianist.

If you take away the fact that Jerry Lee Lewis was a creep and a predator who appropriated black music, this is actually fairly good. For a live album, this is especially good. But while this is good, there are so many other artists who did these songs better. Jerry Lee Lewis as an artist definitely made an impact, and it makes sense he'd have at least one album on this list. I wish I could give half stars because this is definitely a 3.5 for me. I think I have to round down, though, all things considered.

Jerry Lee Lewis : Little Richard :: Elvis : Chuck Berry I see why this was popular, but there’s nothing original here. Little Richard did it better before, and The Beatles did it better after. In hindsight, “High School Confidential” sounds odd considering who Jerry Lee Lewis married.

Live album whyy Jerry Lee Lewis is a pdf file, though this is not bad High School Confidential 6/10 Money (That's What I Want) 7/10 Great Balls of Fire 7.5/10 Good Golly, Miss Molly 7/10 Lewis Boogie 6.5/10 Your Cheatin Heart 6/10 Long Tall Sally 6/10 Whole Lotta Shakin 7.5/10

More familiar with The Beatles versions of some of these songs but there are some classic rock n roll songs here and then he wastes it by playing Your Cheatin' Heart :-D

couldn’t understand a word of this but at least everyone had a good time

Chock full of classics, but still a live album.

Immediately gave me massive "drunk dad at the Christmas party"-vibes. But like watching your father grabbing the microphone - ready to embarrass himself in front of the whole family: It's going to be over fast, half as bad when you remember that everybody is just having fun, and you really have to commend the confidence, energy, and actually decent singing.

How mad that I get this today of all days, as I literally fly out to Hamburg. There's plenty to like in here. There's SO much energy. Great twinkly, frantic keys. If you're in the mood then it's great fun. I'm sure if you're in the room then it's incredible. It's obviously live though, and the recording isn't brilliant. This has got to be one of the shortest albums on here right? Just as well, because I don't think I could do much more of this in one sitting even though I enjoyed it. 3.5 rounded down.

Not a very long album, but it has energy. The songs are all familiar, and some of them I've heard by other artists during this project (which isn't a surprise for the time period). Clearly the value in this album isn't in the songs themselves, but in the performance and production. Comparing it to other live albums is interesting. The recording quality is very good for a live album, and i think the audience's energy and Lewis's feeding off that definitely help elevate the overall listening experience. Idk this isn't going to be one that I immediately purchase and listen to all the time, but it's a fun listen and is mostly harmless in the grand scheme of things.

It was ok. Lewis was certainly an energetic performer live. I'm not sure what was going on with the Little Richard impressions. Unfortunately the guitar was lost in the mix. Sometimes you couldn't hear a solo, but this was recorded in the 60s.

old head final boss apparently he dated his 13 year old cousin which f so kin da freaky ahh 7/10

Two years after the Beatles played there on their ascent to stardom, one of their major influences captivated the audience at the Star Club. The energy of Lewis and his band is infectious, but at just 22 minutes the album is over before it really begins.

Full disclosure: I was so confused when this album started playing because I was fully expecting Jerry Lewis, the comedian whose albums were listened to at my dad’s parents’ house on the first record player I ever listened to (fond memories). But for commentary more related to this album, the COKE that this man must have been inhaling!! Such iconic songs that have nostalgic value but all I can see is Grease/Dirty Dancing extras jumping around at the end of the summer dance.

Ah, Jerry. Making people separate the artist from the art decades before R Kelly and Diddy. Absolute piece of shit, but that’s a hell of a show. 1 star human, 5 star show.

60s classics like great ball of fire. Definitely grandpa vibe of music

Jerry Lee Lewis - Live At The Star Club, Hamburg Classic example of "Separating the music from the artist" but it just feels wrong listening to this after knowing who Jerry Lee Lewis actually was as a person. As a musician however, he really rivaled Elvis Presley down to a peck, and for good reason. This live album feels very alive, full of energy, with the drums going hard while Jerry is singing at the top of his lungs in front of a huge crowd. It feels as if you are there with the crowd, witnessing the atmosphere that Jerry is trying to create, and he succeeded with that. While I don't like him for the stuff that he has done in real life, I can't deny that he has made decent music at most (although half of this album sounds exactly the same, but I digress). Overall, it's a good album as a whole, but because of the things Jerry has done, it just doesn't feel right, specially with some of the lyrics on the album. He married his 13 year old cousin when he was 22 by the way, so keep that in mind... 1.- Mean Woman Blues = 7/10 2.- High School Confidential = 6/10 3.- Money (That's What I Want) = 8/10 4.- Matchbox = 6/10 5.- What'd I Say, Part 1 = 8/10 6.- What'd I Say, Part 2 = 7/10 7.- Great Balls Of Fire = 8/10 8.- Good Golly, Miss Molly = 8/10 9.- Lewis Boogie = 7/10 10.- Your Cheatin' Heart = 7/10 11.- Hound Dog = 8/10 12.- Long Tall Sally = 7/10 13.- Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On = 8/10 FINAL SCORE = 7.3/10

Fun and iconic music. Think I would like studio versions better but overall solid. 3.5/5

is this the shortest album so far? lots of energy here - must have been crazy live. 3.5

Good old time Rock N Roll!

Good music by a terrible person.

It was nice. Not my usual style but it there’s me a nostalgic feel to it, which I enjoy. And, I think I’ve albums are pretty dope.

I did not use a private Spotify session for this one. It's about what I expected, rock/blues standards show casing high energy raucous piano playing. Not making it into my regular rotation, but respect it for what it is.

I was Surprised, it was a lot better than I expected.

just some decent fun early rock and roll.

przyjemnie

Little richard is way better

good energy, amazing, i don't know blues is nice. a little repetitive.

3 stelle

Honestly expected this to be better. Not a huge JLL fan, but I expected him to be at his best on a live album. That just didn't come through.

Was a good listen! Have trouble giving 5 stars as I think there are only 2 originals on this…. Mostly covers

Lots of classic tracks, and it is over before you know it. Good listen 3/5

You know, with Jerry Lee Lewis, the more I learn about that guy, the more I don't care for him.

Incestuous pedophile, but damn... one wild, insane rock 'n' roll performance that you could easily call proto-punk.

Hmmm.

Good music for that time period.

I was hoping the live performance would have had a bit more energy, compared to some of the other live albums on the list so far but it was quite forgettable.

50’s USO fun

Old guy doing old music. Kinda neat but not too interesting

Gets an extra star for passion and recording quality, but this just seems like a 1950s time capsul

Not bad, but nothing overly exciting.

Dates now but fun when you're young

Damn, the energy in this is electric. Loved the piano. Most songs sound the same though, so it gets a bit repetitive. At least the Spotify version is only 22 minutes long. Favorites: "Money", "Your Cheating Heart", "Long, Tall Sally"

Packed a lot in for just 22 minutes. Solid rock and roll.

And this is the problem with live albums on the list and particularly with this artist. The music is driving and well recorded but the showmanship which must have been a key part of the performance just does not come across.

Some classic Jerry Lee Lewis tracks. Jumping rock and roll from the 1950s.

Rock'n roll classique. Son un peu grésillant

As a live recording, this is great; it truly captures the pure Rock'n'Roll energy. But the sound is a bit simple, and, more importantly, I believe most of the songs are covers. Maybe this was before the times when Rock was solidly in the album-oriented era. But then it makes sense to rank it lower when we are specifically ranking albums. Jerry Lee Lewis as a traditional Rock'n'Roll singer or "Great Balls of Fire" as a song would definitely get 5 stars. But the album isn't really a vibe.

Lively, fast paced songs. An unexpected surprise was “Your Cheatin’ Heart”, I really enjoyed their rendition there.

Short album but was good. Had some bangers like good golly miss molly and great balls of fire

The album is fine. It seems like not a lot of original material, but that's ok. I don't think I'd listen again, but I wouldn't be opposed.

This is good classic, pre-Beatles rock. Money, in particular, is a blast of a song with great vocals and slamming piano keys. The rest of the album is pretty iconic, though also stereotypical 50s with tunes like Great Balls of Fire and Good Golly, Miss Molly, which Little Richard did better.

Piano rock 'n roll. It must have been wild when it was new, but it sounds outdated now. Favorite song: money.

I just know my Nan loved this.

I’m usually not the biggest fan of live-albums but this seemed to translate the experience of being at the venue in person very well. Although this genre is not my cup of tea, I enjoyed this album. It’s a shame that so many tracks are removed from the Spotify version. (from copyright I guess?) I could listen to this for a little bit longer than 22 minutes. But a good, short weekend album. Favorite track: Great Balls Of Fire 6/10

Music is fine, just what you'd expect from the era.

A little old for me

i haven't heard much from this era (late 50s so this was a welcome change for me! "whole lotta shakin' goin' on" was the standout track in my opinion. :) it's interesting to hear how rock has evolved over the decades since this album (and earlier) controversial guy though, just read the wikipedia page and holy shit

This music is heavily reminiscent of a live Beatles show, minus the thousands of giddy screaming girls. Even this Jerry Lee Lewis guy sounds pretty similar to Ringo Starr, especially on the tracks that both bands covered (Money and Long Tall Sally). In places, when I wasn't paying close attention, the resemblance became a little uncanny. Other than that, the music here is straightforward high-energy rock'n'roll. Lots of fast, repeated piano chords, often in high registers, make an appearance, as well as crash-heavy drums in the background and plenty of twelve-bar blues progressions. From the Wikipedia article, I get the impression that Jerry Lee Lewis had quite the stage presence, though it isn't as apparent in the audio recording. I'll try not to let the fact that he's a horrible person affect my rating. (Hence the bonus 3 stars.) 3/5 Key tracks: Great Balls Of Fire, Good Golly Miss Molly, Long Tall Sally

Rockin' good music and a solid performance. It was a little more Elvis-like than I was expecting. I'm not a huge fan of putting live albums on this list. Oh yeah, and JLL is a turd.

Enjoyable - very short for a live set but high energy. Always enjoyed his music.

Fun record

man. the person who invented the world's second chord progression must've been thrilled

Goodness, gracious, great balls of fire

Nothing to hate, but also nothing to love on this one.

Great live album with classic tracks

yeah ive got a hounddogggg ive got a philadelphia boar and i ride into a volcanonooooo and iiiii break down the doorrrrrrr ii v i

honeymoneyboneyhoneyloneymoneyboneyyy

Jerry Lee Lewis playing all the hits in under 23 minutes. Enjoyable listen, nothing amazing, but nothing to hate.

Great honky tonk music. And I know he was such an inspiration musically and performance-wise for so many artists. Not my fave.

i DID NOT understand a word he said and it doesnt help that the lyrics are wrong too. elvis type shi.

A classic performance

This the second time two things have happened: 1) I had to find the “proper” version on YouTube as Apple Music only has a version with 8 tracks (I never really want to cheap out on any record that pops up). This happened with ‘Black Monk Time’ a few weeks ago. 2) This is the second live album so far. The first being Thin Lizzy’s ‘Live And Dangerous’. So I’ll say the same thing I said the first time: I never really know how to rate live albums, as I don’t frequently see them as “essential” listening in an artist’s discography. So I can only judge this based on the quality of the performance with the ceiling I usually offer such LP’s; and it’s pretty solid offering. It’s mostly rock ‘n’ roll classics that you have probably heard a million other bands cover before. The performances are pretty flawless and, man it is energetic as hell. So I don’t really have a problem with it. But like Thin Lizzy’s ‘Live And Dangerous’, your opinion on it will probably depend on how big of a Jerry Lee Lewis fan you are. So for me it’s a 3. I don’t dislike it at all, I just don’t think there’s anything here to make me want to listen to it numerous times.

I had fun listening to this but it seems odd that you get to have an “album” that’s 22 mins long…

He's a good piano player, it's a good recording. It just doesn't do anything to move me past three stars.

This motherfucker got so much swag. I am tapping the shit out of my foot at my desk. I wanna boogie. Guy seems like a legend but probably wouldn't listen again. 2.7.

High energy, fun live album. Didn't know where the term Good Golly Miss Molly game from. Apparently this guy was as popular as Elvis back in the day but then he married his 13 year old cousin and fell from grace.

Good enough. Can’t see myself listening again

5/10 - Short and mid. Although my thoughts about how albums of this era always have a song about cheating somehow. I have heard great balls of fire surprisingly,

This album is shorter than the song I submitted to music league this week

More likable than I expected

*** a high energy rock n roll album, no screeching guitars. yAY!!

It’s not hard to understand the appeal of a JLL show at his prime. This is high energy by any standard and I’m not sure what kind of precedent may have existed before Jerry came along. That being said, it’s not my taste. I was born decades later and this is more or less a curiosity for me. An interesting reference for how we got to where we are and what shaped the artists that I grew up loving. But I’m never going to cue this up again for my own recreational listening.

Vibrantly energetic, but non-resonating.

FAVO: Money, Good golly miss molly, Long, tall Sally

The piano in all these songs are amazing but the songs themselves are nothing special. The ones I liked tended to be covers (although most of the songs are covers).

Pros: - This captures the primal energy of piano-led rock ’n’ roll much better than most studio recordings. The whole genre can seem quite quaint and tame now, but this live performance from one of the founding fathers does a decent job of conveying why it would’ve been so exciting to the yoof o’ the day. - Concise and to the point; quick segues between tracks mean the album doesn’t lose momentum. - Jerry Lee refers to himself in the third person on nearly every track; should be annoying, but somehow I found it entertaining. Cons: - As with so many early rock ’n’ roll albums, it’s the same handful of covers and standards performed in very similar arrangements. Song-wise, this album offers nothing new. - The guy, by all accounts, was a wrong’un on many levels. I usually try to keep that sorta thing out of my ratings, but it does make it hard to truly warm to this record. All things considered, it's getting 2.5 stars. But I’ll round up purely because I did find it quite enjoyable to listen to, as far as these things go.

Not bad for a live album. A few covers thrown in there but I get that was the style at the time.

guilty pleasure :-)

This is to modern music in the same way the cave paintings are to Da Vinci or Picasso. Listenable but little else

Very nice, old fashioned vibe, good for parties or small and active gatherings!!!

Excluding Jerry's creepy personal life, this one was pretty good but also shorrrt. 3/5

There is always a debate when reading reviews of live albums whether or not they should be included on the list. My view is that if it is a very good recording and it comes across as such when listening on your own audio equipment then I’ve no problem with it. Wiki says that many in the know say it is one of the greatest live albums ever recorded. I cannot agree with that. I assume that recording techniques in 1964 comprised of strategically placed analogue microphones around the band which was probably fine then. But when listening now if you take away the energy of the recording, the actual sound is a bit thin and muffled. I know that we are not judging albums primarily about their sound quality but for me listening enjoyment is a major aspect of an album and despite how good a song is it spoils it if there are sound or production defects. That said, as I have already indicated the record does have a lot of energy and it must have been an amazing concert. For that reason, despite sound issues, I’m glad it was captured for posterity. All the songs are well known and as they are now musical artefacts they must be respected. I’d forgotten about the seedier and unsavoury aspect of JLL but plenty of reviewers have reminded me of it. Rating reflects this and lower than what the actual music deserves. 3/5 11/7/24

Energy and humour. I'd give him a 4 if he wasn't a paedophile, marrying a 13 YO.

so Jerry stole from black artists and then the Beatles stole from Jerry . Am I following

Short set from one of the greats. You know what you are getting

The album is high energy, driven by the live performance. There's a couple of major hits on the album, that bring it up a ton for me, but there's a few moments where the band just seems out of sync/tempo, and it just doesn't sound great to me. Favorite song(s): Good Golly Miss Molly

Did anyone check on the piano after this performance?

# Playlist Track - Great Balls of Fire # Notes - An interesting music history lesson and a somewhat enjoyable show.

Classic

For a pedophile, pretty rockin and hip record dude

-I do enjoy some good rockabilly… it’s a lot like Elvis but crazier ig? -i can see why the teens of the 50s and 60s were so blown away by this stuff because by their standards it had to have been like listening to Miley in 2013 -Favorites are Money and Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On

Fun...

decent fun live album

Maybe the most raw and energetic performance I've ever heard. Every song has a fiery attitude that makes it impossible to not move and dance. My only complaint is that every song sounds exactly the same, which is more a product of the songs chosen. But I feel like 2 tracks on a 45 would get the same effect as the full album. A fun listen overall

Fun short live album

Live albums are never good. This one was better than most, but it’s still a live album.

Kurzes, energiegeladenes Album. Fand ich dementsprechend ganz cool.

I kinda feel bad for any artist getting hyped to release a live album because most of them are just not good. Although hearing a crowd going crazy for Jerry Lee Lewis while he makes weird mouth sounds in Great Balls of Fire is pretty funny.

This LP has stood up to the rest of time

This is an energetic thrashfest of blues driven rock and roll piano at its pounding, jangling, driving fullest. The smell of cigarette smoke and youthful sweat is unmistakable. Enjoy the ride, kids, enjoy the ride.

Fun. This album was fun. Simple, ferocious, infectious, straight-ahead Rock and Roll. Of course as a museum piece, you can't help but consider the cultural appropriation side of it all. Black music, typically ahead of its time, had been playing boogie-woogie and other proto-Rock for decades before Lewis hit the scene around 10 years prior to this album. But of course, as "Black" music, it was shunned by the white culture police. Ironically, as wild as he was, it took the likes of Lewis and Elvis to break through, at least with the kids if not the adults.

The early rock standards have never really done it for me, but Lewis’ performances here are some of the best. Unfortunately, he is a racist pedophile who (maybe) murdered one of his wives.

An exceptional live album. It’s amazing how many songs I recognized. My real issue is that it was so short and the honky to k piano just started getting old.

One of the better live albums I’ve gotten, and yes he’s talented, but also a horrific person so I refuse to give it more than a 3.

Good if you’re 60+

Not a bad album for a dude that married his 13 year old cousin, some classics, but a little too eh in the country/blues to have regular listen. needs to be about 10 years earlier or 10 years later. Sorry Jerry

Pretty fun, thankfully short

I like that it is filled with energy and good vibes. However all tracks seemed to me as the same and it began to bore me at a certain time

Alright, lots of energy and all the obvious hits.

I wasn’t looking forward to a live album when I first saw this, but after a song or two I got into it. Really cool! I’ll probably never listen to it again but I see why it was included.

Classic rock and roll. How can a piano sound like that?

C'était un live plaisant.

Rest in Peace to The Killer, gone now but not forgotten. The audio quality of this one is poor, due to the era and due to the live venue, but it's a greatest hits album. 3 stars.

Energetic Rock n' Roll but Jerry Lee Lewis was a POS

Short and nice.

Definitely has a talent with handling audiences, also a talent with handling cousins so I've heard

Только за счет Great Balls of Fire ставлю 3.

I have no idea what he’s saying but he’s killing it.

I knew before listening that Jerry Lee Lewis is known for boogie woogie, but it still felt a little repetitive. I can tell that he's a fantastic performer, but the music itself felt like it could have used some variety. That's why "Your Cheating Heart" was my favourite part of the album, because it felt like things were allowed to breathe a bit.

"Troubled" individual wasn't he. Hard to argue with the emotion and energy of this performance, with all the key tracks from the beginning of rock and roll. So conflicted between "this guy's a wrong'un" and "these tracks changed the way we perceive music".

Well, I can’t argue the talent, but it got very same-y very quickly

While I generally like oldies and first-wave rock 'n roll, I don't particularly enjoy Jerry Lee. I'm sure he was a fairly entertaining performer, but his recorded work doesn't really blow my hair back. This album was a quick listen and didn't make much of an impression on me. Moving on....

elvis?

Very enjoyable. Not sure I'd come back to it though.

Very Good performance. Amazing charisma. Short length and wasn't that into the songs.

I can imagine how fun this music would be live. I can see people dancing and jiving at a party. It really brings it to life, more than it is for me listening in my headphones sitting at my desk. It puts into perspective how music has changed over the ages depending on how it is listened to.

I remember growing up, the 1989 biopic with Dennis Quaid was pretty popular… or at least my dad liked to watch it a lot. Because of it, I also recall the scandal of Lewis marrying his thirteen year old cousin. How even in 1993, I was halfway to that age, and understood enough how messed up it was. And he died only two years ago. Man, just imagine being married 7 times. I bet his balls were on fire, or at least they deserved to be. Anyway, I’m not crazy about the music. Songs are plenty familiar. But for a live album recorded in Germany in 1964 it sounds pretty good, and clear. I guess it’s highly regarded as far as live albums go. Honestly I could see this as having influenced everything from the Doors to the Misfits, and punk rock in general. And it is a pretty short release. I guess I don’t really feel one way or the other about the music itself. But it probably would be one of those “you had to be there” kinda things, it definitely sounds like it would be more entertaining like it seemed in the film.

My dad used to play Great Balls Of Fire all the time when I was a little kid and I loved it. It seemed more popular back in the 80s and 90s than now. I feel like original rock and roll has been forgotten a bit or it's at least fading quickly. I tried to find significance in this album aside from the music because the album itself didn't thrill me that much. It does sound good for a 60 year old live concert recording, but the music itself isn't something I'm going to revisit. And then I read that Jerry Lee Lewis had married his 13 year old first cousin once removed a few years prior to this show and it kind of kills Jerry Lee Lewis for me a bit. He would have been so canceled today. This show would not have existed today. Not that that makes the music better or anything. It was interesting, but live albums aren't typically something I find myself returning to.

Not sure what to say about this. It’s definitely Jerry Lee Lewis being his most Jerry Lee Lewis. It’s not my style, and I can’t complain.

Favourites: high school confidential, money, your cheating heart. Decently fun, but not really my taste. 3/5

I was filled with an inexplicable amount of dread upon reading "Live". Likely because of Made in Japan. However, I enjoyed the album a surprising amount for a live album (usually only like them if I was there). I kind of liked the singing a little bit and quite enjoyed the instrumentals. Very much so a jam, would've been better if Jerry Lee Lewis kept his mouth shut. sorry bro. 3/5, -2 for the singing lol

Its good, but the sound is too dated for me to want to listen to it regularly.

Minus 1 star for being a pedophile

Felt kinda like an Elvis impersonator… the lyrics were a little annoying but the supporting musicians sounded incredible.

It's early rock and roll. It's pretty upbeat, so that's good, I guess? Better than Elvis, at least, and ironically less country-ish. Wikipedia says it's considered one of th greatest live albums of all time. That might be a bit much, but it didn't suck, so that's something. 3 stars.

Meh. This isn’t a great live album. It’s missing that sense of continuity and earnestness. The songs are fine but nothing more.

I can see why this live performance was pretty nuts for its day-you can definitely feel the energy! Listen again: maybe Purchase for my collection: no Favourite Song: money

Has some Elvis vibes, sounds nice, makes you want to shake it, pretty nice. Even though the album is live, it's pretty good.

Points taken for being a scumbag but this was high energy and a fun listen

RnR, live 1964 -> 3

Decent short live album

Hard to push past the individuals problematic personal life to really appreciate the music and not have it tainted by questioning what was he really singing about in these songs. But the idea of the album and the rawness of the recording is refreshing in a way you rarely get anymore. Concerts are all in such large venues and have such fancy recording equipment, but this feels like you were in a small club bopping along.

live rock n roll!

Thoughts before listening: Early rock n roll with Jerry Lee Lewis' wild man piano playing leading the way. I don't believe I've ever listened to JLL outside of his hits, so it'll be interesting to see what this sounds like...especially being a live album. Review: 8 songs in 22 minutes and all high energy piano led rock songs. This is definitely fun with some absolute early rock standards on here, but the live production is a little annoying. I love live albums, but the crowd noise on this one is distracting (I feel the same way about James Brown's Live at the Apollo). "Money", "Great Balls of Fire", "Good Golly Miss Molly", "Long, Tall Sally", and "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On". All classics that I'm glad to add to the playlist (also what a playlist this is, in the last 24 hours I've added songs by Jerry Lee Lewis, Slipknot, and Ice-T). This is a 3-star album.

Good times

Get it boi!

Old rock n roll

A good representation of JLL. He's not my thing but it confirms the influence he had on a bunch of people later.

Still not really my thing as with rock and roll generally - undeniably classic but not my thing. Really cool drums and hard hitting drum sound - more that I would have expected. Anyone who worries about cancel culture needs to learn the lesson that you can marry your 13 year old cousin and still have a public musical career ahead of you (at least in the 50s-60s).

catchy, but also comes from a certified scumbag

Separating the art from the artist, this is enjoyable. 22 minutes? Great. Bad person, though, to put it mildly. I dunno why we couldn't just have Little Richard or something and get a better version of this.

Svårt att bedöma. Det är ju inte asbra. Det är inte asdåligt heller. Inget jag skulle lyssna på.

I'm sure my dad went to see him in Belfast in the 70s/early 80s and said Jerry was out his nut, came on late then eventually passed out and got carried off. For as far as live albums go this was good, high energy coherent, short too.

Good old rock and roll by a horrendous human

I have a soft spot for blues/rock-and-roll but this one is among the most generic and dull rock-and-roll I have ever heard.

Classic boogie woogie - not really my wheelhouse but would be fun to play piano

High School Confidential.

I'm vaguely familiar with Jerry Lee Lewis, but I've never listened to one of his albums. This album was about what I expected in terms of the musicianship: the energy was high, and Jerry's piano playing was his personal brand of manic precision. I'm typically not a big fan of live albums, but it was really cool to hear Jerry whip the crowd up into a frenzy with each song. Other than the piano playing though, there wasn't a whole lot going on. The vocals, drumming, and guitar playing were present, but that's about it. I don't know if Jerry's other albums feature a lot of other people's songs, but I think he was able to leave his own fingerprint on each song that wasn't his. This album didn't light the world on fire, but it was pretty enjoyable to listen to.

Very surprised by the accolades that this album receives in many of the prominent music publications. Jerry has great stage presence and electric energy, but when it comes down to a critical review this album is not recorded well. I did find myself dancing my seat a couple times but most of the time it was irritating how loud the piano was.

Undeniable. Weird how great balls of fire will always be a top gun song to me. Money is great too. Loses points for all the songs sounding the same and the lack of lyrical complexity.

I mean the people love this guy! Who am I to deny them. Hard to ignore the context of this music largely being stolen, but the charisma comes through the headphones and was enough to pull me through. Fave track: Great Balls of Fire

No lie, that guy rocks pretty hard from behind a piano.

A classic is classic for some reason. It sounds (of course) old school for 2024, but still enjoyable. It's not a masterpiece tough.

Lots of good energy. Some good old fashioned rollrock

A legend! I like the live album feel.
