I really dig the beats. Her vocal style is unique and interesting at times, but also ever-present, and too much at some point. Lyrics seem boring and cliché, or perhaps just unrelatable to me. The percentage of female R&B music focused on relationship problems that I enjoy is negligible. Maybe just 10% of this album and a little Alicia Keys. 2.257

Enjoyable modern RnB album. It suffers from the same issue that a lot of the recent additions to this list do - I just don't think there's been enough time to really codify this into the music canon. Time will tell.

In the second track, there is this whistle wheeze that repeats through. It the sound my dog makes before he throws up on the carpet at 3 am. That kind of covers my thoughts on this. This also contains a bunch of cliche retread pop and r&b elements. This is boring.

2 - Was hoping to like this, but this wasn't anything special. It was way too slow for me and it felt like nothing was happening.

What I’m finding with the more modern picks is how cynical I’ve become towards music released in my lifetime. There are some interesting moments here and there on this LP, but it is so painfully obvious what has been put in with an eye for radio play and charting. There’s been a steady homogenization of popular music (indie included), and it’s just sad to see music as a product rather than an expressive art form. The year this released so many other kickass albums dropped that challenged what music could be and broke the mold - is this the best representative album we’ve got?

cool slightly experimental r&b album will have to listen again

I just don’t like modern R&B very much. I’m not even sure just what it is, maybe the way the production swivels and the vocals slowness of the vocals. I think I will probably struggle to rate R&B albums fairly, but I’ll try. It’s music that feels sexy, but I don’t know how to listen to it when I’m just existing unsexily, which is my natural state. I don’t really feel like she’s saying anything interesting or original with these songs, even if it’s very competently performed and produced. I feel like it’s unfair to give it 2/5 given my own struggles with this genre, but I can’t rank it with some albums I actually like that I gave a 3 to.

Not really my jam or my area, but this is clearly a great record from a great artist. I fully get why it was included on the list.

Finally a modern one, but kind of boring

R&B with an electronic twist. It's different, but the tracks began to sound a bit samey.

A decent and chill record that is just a bit forgettable. Onanon is a bop but too late in the tracklist to make much of an impact. Was very surprised to see Arca credited on a few tracks as the production is pretty restrained and safe throughout compared to her far more out-there and interesting work

Niet helemaal mijn genre, maar af en toe toch best aardig.

This certainly caught me by surprise. Having no context for who Kelala is her voice just shines bright through the whole album. Fave track: Take Me Apart. Certainly worth another listen.

Hmmmm, kinda the same ballpark as FKA Twigs, but I think Kelela suffers in that comparison. Or it might just be that I'm a lot more familiar with FKA Twigs... 🤔 Pleasant enough - I think it might benefit from a listen with good headphones to catch all the electronic stuff going on. Fave tracks - "Waitin" and "Onanon"

This one honestly surprised me. Production on it was fantastic, not really one for R&B but this came off kinda synthwave like? Cool album.

Music for the people. Truly unproblematic in any way, which is another way of saying that it makes little to no statements. It's fun music, possibly a tad repetitive. I enjoyed it and have no big complaints. 3/5

It’s an alright album, not my usual sort of thing but I’m pretty open to anything if it’s good. Not sure I really needed to hear this one before I died though. I will say there are some riffs that remind me of the classic Australian band Bardot and for that I added another star hahaha

Finally some contemporary stuff! And it's an album I'm quite familiar with. Love this one and jammed it a lot when it came out. "Frontline" is still probably my favorite song by her.

I think she has a great voice. I think the album started really well but for me and only me it is not my thing. For others I think it is a great variation of a theme that has saturated the market.

Delightfully futuristic R'n'B, with great vocals. This is a few duller tracks away from a strong 5 stars.

Really surprising R&B piece. Had not heard it before, but very happy with it. I think it is missing a little something to pump it up for me though.

2.4 - seems to think that electronica is innovative. mixing it with basic rnb doesn't enhance either. Some interesting passages rather than songs throughout managed to keep my attention but by the time it starts going heavy with the autotune it's like every other generic modern rnb but with a bit of electronica thrown in.

I really enjoyed the subtle start to this album. I'm not the biggest fan of R&B but this album had a nice chill vibe about it, was just ok to listen too. No songs really stood out though, just felt like one big song as all the songs have the same sound to them. I did get a little bored towards the end of the album, when all the songs sound the same there's only so much you can listen to.

BL: a complete blind listen. So will have to wait till after I’ve listened to pass judgement AL: I can’t help but feel massively Dissapointed by this one. I feel like this doesn’t really deserve to be on the 1001 albums list at all. There was very little that stood out in this record to me than the hundreds of other modern RnB/Neo-Soul albums that get churned out every year. The production was good value, there were some songs that I liked. But nothing at all that warranted it’s place on this list for me. I think I have to give it a 1 just for how forgettable it is. A record like “Heaux Tales” by Jazmine Sullivan did this a whole lot better. FT: “Take me Apart”, “Blue Light” 1/5

Pretty smooth pleasant album, but I question whether it’s that remarkable or unique for this list. I do like it a little, or much more than most R&B I’ve heard thanks to the production and her vocals, which are never too showy nor annoying.

Over long, over produced.

The genius production element here is the multiple vocal tracks layered and mixed I to every song. This is quit good and done well. But that's the sole reason for being on this list.

Wow this one actually blew me away on first listen when I wasn't expecting that much. I had never heard of Kelela besides her feature on "A Seat at the Table" by Solange only realizing she was featured on it in the middle of listening. I don't think this album is perfect but it's the most I've felt while listening to an album in a long long time, first time I've felt this way to an album during these 1001 listens. The vocals, the production, the lyrics, the vocals, the vocals, and the VOCALS on this are all in credible and I cannot recommend enough. Favorite Tracks: Frontline, Take Me Apart, Enough, Jupiter, Better, LMK, Blue Light, Onanon, Bluff, Altadena

Had never heard of the artist and was really impressed with the album throughout.

A funky and beautiful piece of r&b. Kelela is full-voiced and sounds pitch perfect with every thumping track. Amazing production guides this one to a satisfying finish line.

One of these albums where all the credits are for "production" and "mixing". A lot of talent here but to me the stewpot of Electronica generates something with the soul severely muffled.

Having never heard of Kelela, I went to old trusty Wikipedia to see if there was anything I should know about this album. It seems that the critics were absolutely frothing about this when it came out for being such a genre melder. Let’s listen and find out! Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Take Me Apart This is admittedly a genre that’s never really clicked for me, but I really don’t understand the fuss with this. To my ears, there wasn’t anything remarkably different to other R&B music that I’ve heard over the years. I don’t have a wealth of music to compare it to, but this certainly didn’t wow me. I will say though that it amused me to know end that the opening track is called Frontline - in the UK (and maybe other places) this is the name of a product that kills fleas.

While it is not my preferred genre, there was no song on the album that I disliked. 3 - 4/5, still in doubt 3/5 as I will probably not play this album again afterwards 4/5 as it succeeded in selling me a genre I'm not a fan of

This album is fine, but I'm not sure if I see why it's one of the 1001 albums. It sounds pretty and all, but doesn't really have much else going for it. The album feels overly long and almost all the songs are boring and too long (apart from a couple of weird short ones, which were still boring). Kelela, who I'd never heard of before, has a nice soulful voice, but really poor enunciation. I couldn't understand what on Earth she is saying most of the time. I guess it's on the list because of the "experimental" production that wasn't even that original really. The last track took me completely by surprise, though. I was sitting there bored, tired and looking forward to finishing the album and going to bed, and then, suddenly, I'm hit over the head with these lyrics: Nothing to be sad about It's not just me, it's everyone Let me remind you, let me remind you Nothing to be sad about There's a place for everyone Let me remind you, let me remind you This was so exactly what I needed to hear that I got all choked up. I was almost in tears until, at the last chorus (after she's already sung the chorus a LOT), I suddenly realise that the lyric is actually "nothing to be said or done." I was getting all emotional over a misheard lyric. That realisation was quite a letdown. The actual lyric doesn't even make much sense. Oh well, it's still a decent song and the only song on this album I even slightly care about. Favourite track: Altadena

Loved this! I'm old, but I really liked the late 2010s sound, that kind of dark synth influenced by that OneOhTrix guy. But her voice adds another layer.

If you like Kelela’s vocals and uninteresting backing beats then you’ll love the album because that’s all you get in every song.

Over all good listen for music that is not my norm.

Remember this coming out and being an album you could slap on and listen front to back. It still has that quality. The production is subtle, then bombastic and then simple again creating this dubby space for Kelela's sweet little voice to fill. Lyrically it could be more complex, but then again this is a RNB album and not a PHD. Very solid four. Recommend her most recent album too.

It's been a long time since I've listened to a contemporary R&B album that I didn't dislike, to be honest. This album feels a lot more intimate and it is helped by the remarkably languid beats and floaty synths throughout the album. With electronica influences from the decades beforehand and here and there a little Prince throwback this is a listen best done while lazying on the couch with your headphones.

Soul. Aburrido.

I’ve been to enough pitchfork music festivals (two, in 2009 and 2010, when the website was slightly less of a joke than it is today, *slightly*) to know a “Best New Album” when I hear it. Sometime during the second track, I thought to myself, “Pitchfork gave this Best New Music, didn’t they.” Since I was driving at the time, I couldn’t verify it on the spot, but once I got home, I did. Lo and behold, my suspicions were correct. This record was given Best New Album status over at Pitchfork. In fact, all of Kelela’s records have received that honor to date, which is no small feat. If only there was a way for me to monetize this useless skill of mine. Maybe I could go to bars and bet people that I can tell if a album got Pitchfork’s highest praise. They’d play me a song from a record and I’d say yes or no, like a parlor trick for aging hipsters. I think I could probably do pretty well at it, like as a side hustle, but at best, the audience for that type of bet is small. As usual, I digress. My point is, if your tastes typically align with Pitchfork’s, you’ll probably enjoy this record. It might be the Pitchforkiest record I’ve been assigned so far - sort of a retro-futuristic take on r&b with glitchy percussion and a healthy portion of synth pads. Experimental enough to not be totally mainstream, but mainstream enough not to alienate people who might usually be put off by experimental music - the Radiohead paradox.

The production on this album, largely by Jam City and Arca (with Ariel Rechtshaid! which meant I was very likely going to like this album), really shines. So much so that Kelela’s vocals—which are good and add a quality of tenderness to the brash-at-times production—take a backseat to the production. Ultimately, I preferred the Jam City-produced tracks over Arca’s. LMK and Truth or Dare we’re highlights. This album made me want to switch over to Tinashe’s 333, so that’s what I’m listening to now that I’ve finished Take Me Apart. 3/5.

3.9 + Part of a raft of excellent alternative R&B records that have been popping since the aughts. I think Kelela holds up against other acts like FKA Twigs in terms of exciting electronic sonics blended with gorgeous singing. However, similar to FKA Twigs, I find her sound icy, icy cold. Within the genre I gravitate more towards artists like Blood Orange, Sampha, Frank Ocean and SZA. Standouts: "Onanon", "LMK."

I don’t really know when this album should be played to get the most out of it. It didn’t speak to me other than saying “next”.

day 16. woah, a recent one! I'm not at all familiar with Kelela (or really, R&B in general). I found this to be a pleasant listen and the production is solid, but I don't know that it's particularly memorable. Her vocals aren't particularly distinctive. And I started to get a bit bored in the second half with a lot of the songs bleeding together and getting more ambient. but some of the songwriting is pretty good and I like the overall vibe. my faves were Frontline (by a lot), Onanon, LMK also why is Bluff her #1 song? it's 1 min of filler ... I don't get it ... 3/5, it's just alright for me, not running to get back here

I forgot to take notes on this album, but I remember thinking it was good chill background music. I actually listened to it twice to see if anything stood out. I think there was some song I liked more than others, but nothing really jumped out. I think this was a debut album, which is impressive, which might be why it's on a top 1,000 list.

Had this on while working. All the songs kind of blended together, but not in a bad way. Just nice soft pop/hip hop that flows together.

This is not my usual genre of music and honestly I've never heard of it or her (which doesn't surprise me one bit) but the production is fantastic and so Keela's lush voice. The lyrics um, could make me blush

I really enjoyed the electronic R&B vibe and Kelela's soulful voice. Better and Blue Light stand out for me. The music blends together a bit, but it seems like great background music that you can play over and over.

This is pretty far removed from what I usually listen to, but I very much enjoyed it for background listening at work. In terms of expanding my understanding and appreciation of different styles of music, this one was definitely a success. Also, this is surely the sexiest album cover we've had so far.

I could imagine throwing this on in the background for a relaxed vibe, but not for targeted, intentional listening.

Pretty cool stuff, I'm not usually TOO into R&B, but the production here is interesting enough to keep my attention, and she's got a great voice. Gonna try to come back to this and check out her other music soon. Gonna give this the ol' 3.75 rounded up because my initial feeling is that I like this more than a lot of my other 3s lol.

Quite recent r&b album, released 6 years ago. What's the point of putting it on the list of greatest albums of all time? Not a style I like, vocal by Kelela is not my favourite as well. I think its a well made record, very solid concept visible throughout the tracks, but the atmosphere on it wasn't something I enjoy. Well, good effort, but lack of reception on my part.

Very chill, but nothing really stood out to me.

Some interesting bits of production here and there aside, this really didn't do it for me - far too R&B for my tastes.

Ambient electronic RnB isn't usually my cup of tea, but loved this. Perhaps because that my cortisol levels are off the chart at the moment. Whatever the reason, this record is chilled, melodic and innovative. It's super relaxing yet also engaging. The perfect delivery of it's artistic vision. Enjoyed the electronic parts, which kinda outshone the vocals. JUST STOP SINGING. But no, she did not stop singing. Not that it was bad singing, it was just interfering with that sweet, sweet electronica I wanted more of. Slick production, though.

She has a lovely voice, but this style isn't my bag. I feel like it's overproduced and there are too many things that feel like asides that make it hard to get into the theme of the music.

You wonder how much the editors really think you must hear this before you die given they removed it from the book immediately after a single edition. I feel ill equipped to rate this album, I've grown to like many examples of genres I previously wrote off in my youth, but modern R&B is one I'm yet to find an example I genuinely like. First two tracks of properly average R&B in, and a glance at the running time and I'm thinking, this could be the first one I'm tapping out of early. That said, the title track is pretty great. So there are ideas here. Ok, it has my attention. Enough is equally interesting. Ok. This is not an R&B album, more a beat-based soundscape with an R&B tinge. Wait. Another bog standard R&B song. The singles here are a disguise. Stop doing this! Either be good or be shite, please pick one. Her new album was just released this week, I wonder if she picked an approach. I guess out of the singles, LMK is at least a little interesting. Ok no, I think this album is just teasing me. There aren't any more of the cool soundscape songs until Turn to Dust, which is again really nice. There's half of a really great album hiding in here for me. The rest is interesting for an R&B album, but that's what it is, and I just don't really go for that.

Computer, genereer muziek. Zoveel beats, ambient bedje eronder, 10% vulgair taalgebruik, afgestemd op die-en-die demografische doelgroep. Kortom, een album alsof het door ChatGPT is gegenereerd. Doe mij maar wat menselijke creativiteit, desnoods de schraapstem van Dylan, als je maar hoort dat het door een echt mens is gemaakt.

Weer zo'n plaat waarvan ik niet begrijp waarom ik deze moet horen. Niet zoveel mis mee hoor. Maar een 13 in een dozijn-plaat. Geen missers, geen uitschieters.

Het is net als met de top2000: recente nummers of albums moeten nog maar bewijzen dat ze enige eeuwigheidswaarde bevatten. Het is allemaal best hippe zang op een hippe beat en het luistert op zich prima weg, al wordt het op het eind toe wat pretentieuze eentonige aandachtstrekkerij, maar wat vinden we hier over pakweg 10 of 20 jaar van? Maar afgezien daarvan, het is wel weer iets waar ik nog nooit van had gehoord. Nu dus wel, dankzij de 1001.

Highlights: "Enough" The album is very much piggybacking FKA Twigs and Badu via Little Dragon without developing or contributing much. She Drakifies these influences so they can be purposed for MoMA catwalks and CW breakup montages. The heavy reverb and 808s are selling these extremely weak and repetitive melodies that cling to the roots. It's all overture, moody impressions you immediately forget everything about the second they're over. This music is designed as window dressing for *something else*.

Cool sound, interesting timbres and textures, but her voice really is the same every single song and I felt like I got no respite from her voice.

What a slog. So much of it sounds alike and I was bored to tears. I don't get why it's here. It doesn't seem like there's anything really remarkable here. She isn't a terrible singer and the production is good, but I was begging for it to end by track 3.

Why, exactly, should I listen to this album before I die? Okay, it's not my sort of thing, but I can hear no recognisable merit in this that would elevate it above anything else in the genre. Bland and insipid.

R&B with a flavor of glitch and techno. Wish it was a bit more unique, and not sleepy. Would probably slap in a club remix. Melodies are interesting and but sometimes disappointing

This is a great album, it is modern and has a lot of interesting sounds and lyrics. The right combination of electronic music and a kinda pop style of singing

This is an exceptional r&b album. Not only is Kelela a beautiful singer will a natural delivery, but the production backs her up effortlessly with swirling soundscapes and forward-thinking electronic beats. This is yet another album with production credits from Arca, who you can also hear on the FKA twigs album LP1 and Kanye West's Yeezus. All this to say, there is a clear trend of producer Arca working with talented artists to make superb musical works. But enough about Arca, let's focus back on Kelela. It's clear that Kelela has clear artistic vision that is both modern and timeless. Blending elements of contemporary r&b with art pop and electronic dance music makes Kelela's sound unlike anything else right now. The overall album flows nicely and has a mellow, sensual sound to it overall. Even if it does meander a little too long, the end product is stunning. Easily the most enjoyable album this week.

Not favourite kind of music

I was not previously familiar with this artist but I ended up really enjoying this album. It's just f-ing sexy, there's no two bones about it.

Inoffensive laid back r&b that instantly fades into the background and does it's best to stay there. Production is solid, but Kelela's vocals are on the bland side.

Average but bloated pop album, great production though and kelela has a great voice

I'm just starting my 1001 journey and up till now I have felt the bar has been set very low. For me, I wouldn't expect your standard meat and three veg to be good enough to make the list. I'm looking for something that stands out. For the most part this album deserves to be on the list, and is an album I would buy. I will certainly be checking out Kelela's other albums.

Started well, but wasn't for me ultimately.

I liked this a lot more than I thought I would. I'm generally not a fan of R&B, but as I listened to this, I realized it must be because I'm burnt out on late 90s/early 2000s R&B. The complete lack of male rappers interjecting with an unnecessary rap verse was refreshing. Coming in at 54 minutes, it did start to drag a bit for me in the last 15 minutes or so. Overall, this album has good vibes and I liked the production.

This was good never heard of kelela before

I almost went with 4 stars but felt it overly generous. Great voice and talent, interesting production and it feels very modern. Not to my tastes and a bit dark and unmemorable though.

My main complaint with soul is that it's often one dimensional and needs to be fused with other styles. Kelela does that very well with a unique fusion with electronic. I still have some challenges keeping interested since the tempo especially during the versus remains homogeneous. But it's a good attempt to solve my problem so it gets +1. Cover photo doesn't do any harm either.

The production on the opening track caught my attention, and then again on the title track. There is a lot of original synth chords etc. and overall sound changes, with the dozen or so producers. Onanon is my favourite song, I think. She could have used the occasional rapper to spice it up.

Not bad, just not interesting

The highlight is the dark and harsh production with elements of retro synthwave, which reminds me a lot of a weaker FKA Twigs. The R&B singing style is nice and echoey, which works well with the unique production, and is reminiscent of the R&B style that dominated pop in the 2000s (think Alicia Keys). It's too long and a lot of songs sound too similar, but there are a few standouts, and there tends to be something impressive in the effects that grab my attention in most songs. Favorites: Frontline, Take Me Apart, LMK, S.O.S, Blue Light

Fine R&B album. Not usually my thing, but I definitely didn't hate this.

Great combination of electronic music and R&B. Back in the 90s, this is what I pictured R&B sounding like in "the future." Pretty strong songwriting, even though this genre is not really my jam.

Sounds kinda old and kinda new at the same time. Kelela has a great voice which sounds mercifully natural for an album recorded in the last decade. Stylistically the album doesn't fit well in any category. You can imagine these songs getting remixed into any number of electronic genres. For my tastes I think I would like to see the material contorted even further into rougher electronic versions but I understand why the choices were made to let Kelela's songs retain their origins in R&B.

Most of these newer albums will not stand the test of time. Yes, it might be good, and popular. Is it good enough to be on an enduring list like this? Probably not. Just like all the other albums that have made appearances and left the 1001 list...this one will follow. There is nothing special here.

Good but not overwhelming

So excited they included this album. I found it in the new section back when it came out in 2017, gave it a try, and was blown away with the first song in how good it was. Kicks off the album in a perfect way. The rest of the songs are a great blend of interesting beats both slow and thoughtful. It's been raining to day and I listened to this by the window as it rained and it was a perfect soundtrack.

Very cool! As usual, feels great to hear an album from the last decade. I've seen this one around and heard of Kelela, but never listened to her music before. I like this one a lot, not entirely distinguishable from a lot of contemporary R&B artists, but there are some great instrumentals here. I will say this, though: if they put this album from 2017 on the list and somehow SZA's Ctrl doesn't make it, the whole list is getting the bin. Favorite tracks: Frontline, Waitin, Jupiter, Turn to Dust. Album art: Really like the warmth of this one. Just an artist portrait, but the color and lighting is very nice. 3.5/5

What a great album! Certainly a breath of fresh air--- "LMK," "Onanon," "Blue Light" and "Frontline" are probably my favorite tracks on here.

Production -4 Stars Talent - Well, let’s just say that copious use of the word ‘Fuck’ usually indicates a limited contextual vocabulary. ‘Fuck’ is, of course, an important aspect of relationship life - the terrain of Ms Kelala’s album. But (surprise surprise) other things come into the mix too. Not that you’d know it from the patchy lyrics and lavish use of auto tune, pitch shifter and other audio black magic. Not worth the time or the fucking money. And yes, I know it cost me nothing to listen to this album. Still…

repetitive r&b

Generic-sounding. Uses the same shaking effects and jittery beats that one hears everywhere. Vocals are fine, her voice is here and there lovely but nothing to get excited about here, but one allows for the possibility that, not knowing the genre, one may be missing considerable subtlety.

Objectively this isn't bad at all, but it's just really not my jam.

Intimate, artful, stylish, thoughtful and compelling....I just wish it were a little more fun. I’m probably not the demographic to really get this but I find myself saying “why so serious” in the middle of this. Sometimes art and commitment aren’t enough. I like it better than Simon and Garfunkel though.

She made her debut in the music industry with the release of her 2013 mixtape Cut 4 Me. In 2015, she released Hallucinogen, an EP which deals with the beginning, middle, and end of a relationship in reverse chronological order. Her debut studio album, Take Me Apart, was released in 2017 to critical acclaim. About to be a queer Queer is an umbrella term for people who are not heterosexual or are not cisgender. Originally meaning "strange" or "peculiar", queer came to be used pejoratively against those with same-sex desires or relationships in the late 19th century. Beginning in the late 1980s, queer activists, such as the members of Queer Nation, began to reclaim the word as a deliberately provocative and politically radical alternative to the more assimilationist branches of the LGBT community.

Not my bag, but the production is really good. I'm not sure what makes this an album you must listen to - its no different than any of the same genre specific album that's currently available.

I struggled with this album a bit. It sounds fine, both the music and the vocal are good and they blend well together. Listening to this album without context, I felt that it was a bit generic. Not bad at all, but it didn't sound particularly revolutionary for 2017. The Wikipedia entry shed a little more light on it, noting it's fusion of R&B and EDM, as well as other musical styles. I feel like EDM has been a part of R&B for a long time, but I don't know enough about the genre to say that definitively. In the end, I like this album, but I don't know that it's super groundbreaking. I think that the years since its release have altered my perception of it. At the same time, this album was released after FKA Twig's EP, which was much more experiemental in terms of electronic music in R&B. In the end I think it's good enough to give 4/5, but it's definitely close to 3/5 4/5

I'm not sure entirely what to make of the ambient-inflected R&B of Take Me Apart. The vocals are especially syrupy, but even Arca's production stays in the background, low-key but lush. But Enough was gorgeous enough and the sequencing of long and short tracks engaging enough I don't really care where it sits in a more informed listener's canon. It works as a measuring stick for me.

The production is lauded as being cutting edge and innovative, but this is from 2017 so I don't really understand why. If this was from 2007 I might be slightly more impressed. Perfect for mid-range clothing retailers who want music to make them appear hip while blending smoothly into the background.

I had no idea that this album existed. The album is best described as electronic R&B and was unremarkable. None of the songs really moved the dial and some were a little long. I have no desire to listen to this album again.

Nice sound but didn't engage

Cool fusion of r&b and electronica - all futuristic sounds and soulful vocals - and the production is excellent throughout. Whether there’s enough here to warrant classic status is unclear.

R&B just isn't quite my genre, although this is obviously very well produced.

This looks like it's gonna be r&b. Oh great it's also dance music, but kinda quiet dance? Either way yeah not my thing. Every song sounds the same. This was a chore. 2/5.

Very melancholy, not really my style

Gaiter Burger in the House! Great voice, but didn't stick with me. Was completely forgettable. Maybe this grows after a couple listens, but I could barely make it though one without the desire to go mow my lawn.

On first listen I thought there was more electronica and this was an impressive fusion bringing a more modern approach to R&B. I went back through the first half again and most actually felt more like typical R&B than I first thought. Maybe I wasn't paying close attention the first time and just believed what Wikipedia said about the style? Overall Kelala's "Take Me Apart" is both chill and passionate, and even the less adventurous tracks are enjoyable. The title track, however, is awesome, and is the best example of the electronic fusion.

Was digging this vibe. Fills the R&B hole in my playlist that is good for chilling in the dark (Imogen Heap, Frou Frou, etc). I could listen to Onanon on repeat.

This blend of R&B with electronica is a great concept. The execution is a bit off though. Too often it feels like the music is like a blanket shielding Kelela from the listener. I feel like she is muffled at times, and I don’t like it.
