Reviews (page 6 of 14)
Pretty good album. Nothing outstanding apart from Gimme Shelter but still
Upon listening again, I thought most about Merry Clayton singing the backing vocal on 'Gimme Shelter'. Best part of the album; highly encourage everyone watch '20 Feet From Stardom' for an extended anecdote on her recording performance. You also get to hear the isolated vocals. Wild stuff. And an absolutely legendary performance. Stones stuff is coo enough too, I guess.
Not first listen; 4; Gimmie Shelter and You Can't always Get What You Want are obviously the standout songs, but I enjoyed the other tracks much more on this listen than I did years ago when I tried to listen to it. Live With Me and Monkey Man I enjoyed in particular. I think I used to be looking for a louder sound or more catchy songs, but I appreciated the blues and country influences much more.
I don't know care that the lyrics are so horny, because goddamn this is a jam. The Rolling Stones, if nothing else, are tight. And just great musicians. And they know how to layer a band. Not a dud note in sight. 7.5 / 10 Best track/s: Gimme Shelter, Midnight Rambler (that little speed up must have blown people's minds in 1969), You Can't Always Get What You Want...
3.8 goooood vibes
Gimme Shelter on kyllä kova biisi. Vahva kantri soundi tässä levyssä. Tykkäsin kyllä kovasti. Parhaat: Gimme Shelter, Monkey Man
Two amazing songs bookend a mix of country and blues songs. The classics make an okay record great.
Another great record. Love how the opening bars feel kinda like the Stones' one (weak) nod to psychedelia. And then they said "enough with that s$&t".
Funky as F
Surprisingly superb and succinct. Found more TRS I actually enjoy.
I guess I’m biased towards the music I grew up with. Happy to see this artist and pleased with this album overall - gave it several listens throughout the day.
När man sedan får kanonspår som Live with me, titelspåret Let it bleed, You got the silver (bra sånginsats av Keith) och You can’t always get what you want.
Stark fyra.
A true classic
Lots of bluesy meat in this sandwich, between two slices of their finest work. Gimme Shelter is one of my fave RS songs, and You Can't Always Get What You Want is a classic. Some of the honky tonk/blues/country content in between gets a bit samey at points, but it's all solid. I enjoyed the feral energy of Monkey Man, and defy anyone not to bust a few Jagger moves along to Live with Me. Feels like a good soundtrack for an American road trip, albeit a short one!
Might be their best
Excellent Stones rawness. Saved every track bar the country variant of Honky Tonk Women
So much jammin on this album. I bet it is very exciting live. 71/100
Opener and closer are so good, the middle isn't quite as strong but it has held up extremely well over time. It still sounds really good, warm, well-mixed, the groove and guitar playing is extremely well chosen. When it's good it absolutely rips
There’s a reason the Rolling Stones are popular this is a brilliant album
Another one of my favorites from the stones. 8/10 Favorite tracks- “Gimme Shelter”
Despite issues with one of their founding members they still manage to hold it together and produce an amazing album - full of their signature blues rock flair their 8th studio album still holds up. Best: You Can't Always Get What You Want Worst: Midnight Rambler
Bueno
George can't always get what he wants.
Loved listening to this album all the way through. Tracks like “Gimme Shelter” and “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” make it stand out, and discovered “Country Honk” from this play through which I really liked. Some of the best the stones have done
TBD
good shit. very listenable. still some skips. favorite song is Monkey Man, also Gimme Shelter obviously whips ass
Low 4 This is what the Stones are all about: some of the best singles you’ve ever heard + an album full of landfill blues. How can a band deliver so many bangers and zero good albums? ABBA, Blur, Queen, and the Stones should fight it out for the ultimate “best-of” band. Queen’s Best Of is not as good as the rest, although their albums are plenty awful. Blur’s albums are a bit too good. Stones vs. ABBA. I probably prefer ABBA Gold to the first disc of Forty Licks. We shall see whose albums are worse over this challenge. Edit: After listening more, I increased the rating from a mid 3 to a low 4. Some of the album tracks are pretty good, actually—namely “Live With Me” and “Let It Bleed.” “Country Honk” and “Monkey Man” are okay too.
I already knew this album well. Reflections on listening again today: The album really highlights the Stones’ reverence for American roots music. Delta Blues, some country, some gospel, some soul. Mick Jagger’s Dartford, Kent, accent often sounds incongruous as he strains to sound authentic. But on the highlight song, Gimme Shelter, perhaps not coincidentally the most original ‘Stones’ song on the album, his vocals are great, and the song’s a timeless classic. Underpinning the whole thing, even when they’re in genre-tribute mode, is the unmistakable Stones ‘groove’ which, regardless of vocals, always sounds brilliant.
It’s only rock n roll, but I like it. Very good record by the Stones.
Classic Stones with three standout tracks. Liked Songs Added: Gimme Shelter Let It Bleed You Can't Always Get What You Want
Solid blues roots Stones. Very good.
"Gimme Shelter" is the big one here. Lots of blues on this one. Very solid album.
Love this one. It has some I knew on it. But definitely get a good feeling of blues here.
An album which has 3.5 Stones classics (Gimme Shelter, Let It Bleed, You Can't Always Get What You Want, the country version of Honky Tonk Woman) and 1 Stones minor classic (Midnight Rambler). The rest is ok. I think that's worth 4 stars.
"Gimme Shelter" and "You Can't Always Get What You Want" are classics. Other than than there are a few honkey tonk country like songs, like a stripped down more folksy version of "Honkey Tonk Man" itself. "Let it Bleed" is a bit of a labour. "Midnight Rambler" is a solid blues track. "You Got the Silver" has good slide guitar, more countryish vibes. "Monkey Man" is a really cool sounding track. Probably the best deep cut on this album. I'll give this a four, because like many Stones albums, there are filler tracks here. Just not as many as usual. 4/5
Great album, starts of with one of my favorite Stones songs and has the perfect song to finish off the album….Gimme Shelter , You can’t always get what you want
that squeaky chair sound. Hilariously American record, gimme a honky tonk girl…they sound like caricatures. Maybe they are cosplaying? You can’t always get what you want is perfect though, just so good
Of the three Rolling Stones albums I have had so far (Aftermath 1966 and Beggars Banquet 1968), Let It Bleed (1969) has been the best. It's got a lot of the American blues influences coming through but the previous albums felt a bit generic. Gimme Shelter stands out but I am not that much of a fan of the other hit, You Can't Always Get What You Want. Overall a decent listening experience.
4/5
Normally I’m underwhelmed by Sacred Boomer Bands, but The Rolling Stones truly are just that great.
Fave stones I’ve listened to so far! Like a nice tight album, too. Very relistenable
Innegable, son los Stones.
My new favourite Stones album!
Definitely my favorite of their albums. The minimalist approach to blues/country rock worked really well on this album.
Solid 4
A real solid one that doesn’t overstay its welcome.
Based on everything else I love, it almost seems I must be defective to even say it, but the Stones have just never fully clicked for me. There's not a single album I really care to listen to front to back. That being said, if I were to choose one, it would be Let It Bleed. How many other albums get bragging rights for having such epic opening *and* closing tracks? I love those songs and the title track. The rest is good, but doesn't hold my attention. But my god, the Muses were on something else when Gimme Shelter was born. They love Merry Clayton. Absolutely one of my favorite songs of all time. It never fails to give me full body chills no matter how many times I hear it.
Vintage Stones. One of their best.
My fav Rolling Stones album by far.
Right up there with the best Rolling Stones albums. It opens with my favourite Stones song, Gimme Shelter, closes with You Can't Always Get What You Want, and in between lie some classic RS schtick, bit of blues, bit of rock, lot of fun. Go on have a go!
I’ve never played this album yet knew every single song, that’s how much of a stone-cold classic this record is. Anchored by two of the greatest songs in rock ever, Gimme Shelter and You Can’t Always Get What You Want, I like all the middle songs more than most reviewers apparently. Still, I can’t quite give this a personal 5 because of the off-putting lewdness that’s just gross: “everyone needs someone to cream on,” as one example. I mean, true, but also, ew.
My favourite RS album so far on this.
1st I’ve heard the whole album. Bluesier than I expected. Good album with some classic hits.
ah ok, now I kind of get why everyone loved the Stones. last RS album on here i was fairly disappointed by, but this absolutely makes up for that -- within 1s i remembered just how absolutely iconic Gimme Shelter is. and i also enjoyed some of the deeper cuts i hadn't heard before.
The generator gave me the all killer, no filler Sticky Fingers as my 13th album and unluckily for the Stones, it may have spoiled me for their other albums. Don't get me wrong, this one is still really good, and it begins and ends with two of their all-time greatest tracks. But around Midnight Rambler it starts to get, well, a bit rambling.
This was the first time I really listened to Let It Bleed. Gimme Shelter” is as powerful as everyone says. The song that stayed with me most, though, was Monkey Man. There’s something about its rhythm and drive — I can’t explain it well, but it just feels cool. I don’t really know much about blues, but the rawness and rough edges in these songs hit me hard.
Some brilliant songs scattered among some forgettable fluff. Better than most of the albums I've given 3 however.
I like this more than sticky fingers. Gimme Shelter and You can’t always get what you want are absolute classics and timeless. Not every track hits but when it does you can see why the Stones are the legends they are.
I'm starting to think the only 5* Rolling Stones album for me would be the greatest hits ones. All of their biggest songs I think are just excellent but everything between them on these albums does very little for me. Also having now listened to three of their albums on this project, they all just sound kind of the same to me. I think I will forever be in the category of like, not love, with this band.
Love gimme shelter and You Can’t Always Get What You Want. Not as much of a fan of the blues inspired stuff in between. Still can’t fault the musicianship and recording, still a super enjoyable listen.
Good one
Quintessential bluesy hard rock classic. Gotta love it.
Banger central
Typical of their great run of albums between Aftermath and Exile, this is a hodgepodge of what they do best. I never get tired of hearing the cosmic "Gimme Shelter," the goofy "Let it Bleed" and the arid "You Got the Silver." "Midnight Rambler" feels like filler - when the Stones get dismissed as a blues cover band, this is evidence it's not their strongest suit. Capping off an album built on self-pity and resignation with "You Can't Always Get What You Want" is a piece of track sequence poetry.
I always forget how countrified this album is. A couple tracks don't do a lot for me, but overall this is peak-era Stones and it's hard not to rate an album with standouts like "Gimme Shelter," "Monkey Man" and the Keef-sung "You Got the Silver' highly.
This is good! It's bookended with classic Stones songs! Midnight Rambler is also good! Good for them!
4.4 faves: gimme shelter, midnight rambler, live with me
Not sure if this was my best introduction to the Stones— nope never mind that was just the Honkey Tonk song. Great otherwise.
Listened Before? N Another banger by the Stones. Loved the slower bluesy/country sound here. I could listen to this all day. Close to a perfect blues rock album. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Country Honk
A classic of course
Largely forgettable middle, but great opener and finisher.
Another classic from one of the greatest Rock Bands of all time!
It’s quality even though not really landing for me
glad I listened
Lotta hits. Can’t go too wrong with the Stones.
Nota: 3.7
Okay, more like it The big negative is far too much of this is country. Like a mad amount. Like 30 mins of 42 are country. But then it has 3 songs that are absolutely insanely good, the opener being Gimmie Shelter, the closer being You Can't Always Get What you Want and then also Monkey Man. If more of the songs were like this its easy 5 stars.
**** 1/2 Contains one of my favorite Songs of the Stones. Good Album, too bluesy though. Anyway: thumb up
Rolling Stones being classy and bluesy, I quite like it
Not a fan of the lore country/folky songs. Very raw feel but that’s part of its charm. Has in my opinion, one of the greatest songs of all time in Gimme Shelter which helps bring the rating up to 4 out of 5, if not for that then it would be 3 out of 5.
This was a surprise, not really knowing the stones back catalogue it was much more folk than I expected.
Ok. "Live With Me" mi je kul. Tud zveni mi bolj kot prav oni. (Poudarjam kle, da mam površinsko znanje o Rollingih.) Naslovni komad isto fajn. "Midnight Rambler" je zanimiv. Kr dolg, skor 7 minut, fajn se razvija tempo, dokler kr naenkrat skor ni nič, razen mal brenkanja in orglic? (Jap, orglice so - thanks, wiki!), iiin gremo z Mickom počas nazaj v komad. Kul. Naslednji isto kul, "Monkey Man" je pa en teh k me pritegne od začetka - najs. U, pozabila sm, da se z zborčkom začne "You Can't Always Get What You Want". Pozabila sm tud, kok je dobr komad. Huda reinkorporacija zbora proti koncu. Na splošno, zelo fajn album.
“We all need someone to cream on…” excuse me ?! Highlights - You Got The Silver, Gimme Shelter, You Cant Always Get What You Want ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Amazing! So many bangers on this album, and it was made a lot earlier than I thought. Bravo! 👏👏👏👏
Is Gimme Shelter the greatest opening track in history? Maybe. Another album with a strong opener and closer with some filler in the middle. Let It Bleed is a strong song in the middle that stops the ablum from lagging, and Monkey Man is a decent penultimate track. Definitely not the Stones best work.
Such a great classic record. Great songs, well produced.
Great period for the Stones.
This is a sound that truly stands the test of time. Enough has been said about the great beginning and ending songs of this album. The rest is absolutely fine as well.
Solid listen, digging the folk bluesy vibes on this one. Only knew Gimme Shelter and cant always get before hearing it, but was pleasantly surprised by the direction it took in between. Love in vain and Monkey were standouts
Pretty solid
Is Gimmie Shelter my favorite song ever? Possibly...
Great album. Weird cover.
Best opener and closer record ever? Wonder what would top this?
Classic stones, gimme shelter will always be a top track. Lots of hits, and not terribly long and drawn out.
very good, but I think some of their later albums are better.
How had I never heard “Country Honk” before? I enjoy this version of the Stones.
Surprisingly good.
This was great. Made me want to go listen to other stones stuff. Really enjoyed it.
I’m never going to be a fan of Mick’s vocals. But this sounds as much like an old-school blues album as the Stones, given their rock priorities, could’ve managed. “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” is essential, of course.
Classic, for my liking, this is a 3.75
great rock album, full of great riffs and storytelling
Midnight Rambler
The generator gave me 2 Stones albums in b2b days. This one is clearly much better than the debut album. This album was the start of the peak era for the band and the records that were coming out. A well-defined blues rock sound completes the album.
Classic, some all time bangers contained within, the less famous songs are all decent if not always super memorable
A wonderful album with my fave song by them on it. One of their best!
A great album.
Great album. Have always loved it.
Lot of good tunes in here. Nice and relaxing
Geggjuð plata, byrjar og endar með alvöru bangers
had heard some of these before but never the full thing, i really liked it i thought it was solid and tight sounding
This album is bookended by two phenomenal tracks. Gimme Shelter is probably my favorite Stones song, and one of the best songs of all-time, in my opinion. "You Can't Always Get What You Want" is an ambitious quasi-ballad that turns into a rock anthem, complete with choir-backed vocals. A perfect closer. Rock, blues, and even country blend together on Let It Bleed, and the Rolling Stones manage to make it all work.
Classic Stones
Breathtaking!
Didn’t realise how many iconic tracks Rolling Stones had or this album
extends rock and blues into sth harder, dark lyrics, lyrics get a bit lost in the music, has also country "Gimme shelter"/"monkey man"/"you cant always get what you want"
A real testament to their songwriting and musical talents. 8/10
Let it Bleed is interesting, it opens and closes with two of the most iconic Stones songs in Gimme Shelter and Get What You Want, but in between are a bunch of country/blues-rock tunes. The overall theme and direction of the album is missing, but still an iconic one for sure.
Black Ops 1 nostalgia be hittin fr fr
This must the best era of their music, it feels like they totally shed the boring rock and roll style stuff from the earlier albums, even though it still is very bluesy, it just feels more artistically interesting, obviously guitar work is amazing, some of these have great grooves, starting to understand why they are considered the best band, it feels really interesting. Also just the different range of instruments which are used and the female backing singers in some of the songs just make it feel very varied and not too boring, which quite a lot of music from this era feels like. The hits are just as good as the album songs as well. The longer ones don't feel forced to be long like that one from the other album of Mick Jagger just vocal riffing for like 10 mins. I think from very distant memory this might be the same if not a bit better than exile on main street and much better than the self titled one and aftermath, which I already got. Only downsides are probably very specific to each song, but generally this is great. Favourite songs: gimmie shelter, love in vain, live with me, midnight, rambler, monkey man, you can't always get what you want. Overall around 7/10
Really love this one, didn't really listened them before, very good vibes, a pleasure to listen to this
cool
L'album se clôt sur un autre coup de génie, "You Can't Always Get What You Want".
I was surprised to hear alot of instruments other than the basic 3. There are a few songs I have heard that were covered by other groups. This is my first Rolling Stones album and I am pleasantly surprised! I was expecting boring classic rock, but I got so much more. 4/5 Great! I will dive more into rolling stones
Buen disco
Didn't think I ever listened to this album before, but totally recognized it. Marv listened to this. It's a GREAT album. Pitchfork: No Pitchfork score. Rolling Stone magazine Top 500 Albums #41 Best Songs Gimme Shelter Country Honk Let it Bleed You Can't Always Get What You Want
First and last song are incredible, some good songs with a few meh sprinkled in. Overall a very good blues rock album. 8/10
Maybe the second best Stones album on the list I have heard. I think Midnight Tamber is best live the three songs that close the album are spectacular.
Gimme Shelter is another banger. I've always loved Merry Clayton's vocals. Slightly rough sounding album but very, very good indeed.
85% Best: Gimme Shelter; Live With Me; Let It Bleed; You Can't Always Get What You Want Must-Hear? Sure
That was great!
nice early stones
First and last songs bring this from a 3 to a 4. Absolute bangers. The rest is...fine.
This is the Rolling Stones at their best. So so fun. I love the rock feel with the big band backing Mick Jagger and the Stones. The entire album is very danceable! This is almost a compilation album of greatest Rolling Stones songs. Love it! It is missing something to really push it to solid 5/5, but it is definitely a 4.5. Liked Songs: The entire album
I’ve never been like a huge Stones fan, I’ve always found that they never had the musical strength or heart of The Beatles, that said I really enjoyed this one. Opener “Gimme Shelter” is fun and “Love In Vain” is cool from an instrumental standpoint. I wasn’t that into “Country Honk”, but I really liked “Live With Me”, and the title track were my two favorites thus far. The closer “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” is also fantastic.
Not top 5 stones albums for me. Pretty mid album tracks.
Have to listen to Midnight Rambler again, seemed to just go on and on
Heard some songs I had never heard.
Gimme Shelter.... then some other songs that were fine. Did I mention Gimme Shelter? It was okay... really thought it would be more essential to be honest.
I think for me it's a 4.5, but it grows with time, sounds amazing and some hits hit really hard. Midnight Rambler and Love in Vain captivate me
Gimme Shelter might be the Stones best single song, which is saying a lot. YCAGWYW is a fantastic closer of course. In between, this is far from my favorite Stones record, and I’d go as far to say it’s a little overrated in terms of the Stones’ classic period output. I wish it had Honky Tonk Woman on it instead of Country Honk. Still 4 stars though.
A lot more twangy and country style than I expected from the Stones, but overall an enjoyable listen
First and last songs are all time greats, everything in between in pretty good, but not anything special.
Very good, a classic for a reason.
Classic late 60's rock jam packed with some of the most iconic songs of the era. As I get older, I appreciate The Stones more and more, but am far from a fan. I like them, I will listen to them, but I rarely if ever purposefully put on a song or record by them, but in the insentces that I do listen to an entire album, I enjoy it. In another 5-10 years, I might actually really dig them. All that to say, this is a good album andmight just revisit it someday (I have heard this one before - several times). 8.2/10 96/1001
The album is bookmarked by two of the greatest Stones songs, but between the bread is plenty of interesting fillings to keep one satisfied and nourished. With eclectic mixes of blues, gospel, rock, and country recorded and brought to you by the U.K, this is a standout Stones record
Good album. Haven't listened to it before but really enjoyed a few of the cuts.
Immediately happy. Four stars feels wrong but it’s a strong 4 bordering on 5. Probably penalized for being not as good as some of the other records.
This album both kind of disappointed me and surprised me. I'm not entirely sure what my expectations were when I saw "The Rolling Stones" on the cover, but this wasn't quite it. At the same time I was positively surprised by some of the tracks and the general vibe of the album Standouts Let It Bleed You Can't Always Get What You Want 4/5
Enjoyed that.
Very good
Let It Bleed contains multiple of the Rolling Stone's biggest and most well known songs. "Gimme Shelter" might be the best definition of classic rock ever, but I couldn't help but hear the blues that was all over this album. The Stones also included country, some jazz, and I swear progressive rock. The combination made for a great, rocking album. On a final note, I simply must mention Merry Clayton's beautiful, jaw-dropping vocals in "Gimme Shelter." You cannot tell me that "Gimme Shelter" would have become the huge hit it is to this day without her backing vocals. Next album please.
Very nice
Always been my go to stones album, bookended with two of the greatest rock songs ever. A rare Keith Richards vocal thrown in as well. Drags in parts but very solid
Love this album- really enjoy the blues element. Gimme shelter and YCAGWYW up there as my fav stones songs
The Rolling Stones are pretty much a greatest hits kind of band for me. Throughout their career they've been consistently inconsistent. They'll get you worked up with a red-hot, smokin' banger only to follow it up with a bunch of mediocrity or disappointment. It's like a roller coaster with all the highs and lows. The Stones were at their peak from about 1969 to the early '70's so this is one of their best. This is a soft 4 for me.
I can feel the blues. I really like when they go into this country aesthetic. Solid work and great closer too. I do prefer Exile on Main St though. (8/10, 4/5 on this scale)
Fun album with some of my favorite Stone’s songs. By far, “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” is a true work of art.
This is an all time classic blues rock album. It literally starts and ends with two of the greatest rock songs of all time. My only problem with this album is a few songs are just alittle too slow for me. But this album is the foundation of all the music I love and listen to today. Seriously one of The Rolling Stones absolute best albums.
Some hits
Not a bad song on the lot
Top notch Stones. Somehow never fully listened to this all the way through as an album over the years. Was a pleasant experience.
I enjoyed this stones album! It had heavy blues and rock inspo and some country twang which I’m normally not into but for the stones I think it works. This has two of their best songs featured “Gimme Shelter” and “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” I also really liked the vibes of “Monkey Man.” I would listen to this album again and recommend it to others!
Gimme Shelter is worth five stars alone - what a song
Full of good jams. Everything you want from a Stones album.
Starts and ends with the highlights - "gimme shelter" and "you can't always get what you want". The rest is still good though. Classic rolling stones
Good album! I can see how some of the blues songs can annoy some people but, those did not really bother me.
Gimme Shelter and You Can't Always Get What You Want capture the limelight, but this is a solid album.
This album grew on me on second listen Gimme Shelter, Let It Bleed, and Midnight Rambler are the standouts. I realize I like The Rolling Stones more than I thought.
There is a lot to unpack in Let It Bleed. Let’s address the elephant in the room: was Let It Bleed what Jagger sang to Bowie after their 1985 duet? The world may never know. Whenever people talk about the Stones, it is often said that they were like the Beatles but dirtier. I give you evidence: Let It Bleed. There are some great songs on this experimental album including Gimme Shelter (one of their best), Country Honk (truth in advertising); and midnight Rambler, which I always loved how that songs keeps on building into itself. There is also some interesting blues, country and honky tonk. The pièce de résistance is, of course, Can’t Always Get What you Want, which is one of their best songs ever. I once attended an economics seminar the professor claimed that because of Jagger’s study of economics (which is true) that the song was about aggregate opportunity cost in the post Friedmanomic era (pretty sure that is crap, but was a good story). Either way, what a great ending to one of the best pieces of Americana ever recorded by a solidly English band.
I liked this, there was a good mix between the songs, yet they were still obviously rolling stones songs. Excellent choice with ending the album with You can't always get what you want. Great all around.
Yeah, that’s one of the good ones!
Nice classic, I'm not a great fan of blues, but I enjoyed the vibe of the album
Gimme shelter is a great song. Love in Vain I didnt like the vocals, but the vibe and instruments were nice. You cant always get what you want is a classic as well.
Excellent first track, devolves somehow along the way into Mick Jagger screaming "I'M A MONKEY MAN," and then caps off with an iconic and joyful tune. Fun times to be had at the supermarket, that's for sure
If it were for the first and the last track alone, this album deserves the highest rating of 5 stars PLUS 5 stars on top. Both songs are amazing. The middle section? Well, you know that Paul McCartney poked a bit of fun at the Stones by calling them a "blues cover band". This wouldn't leave my head when I listened to the whole album again. These tracks in the middle are not bad, don't get me wrong. "Honkey Tonk Woman" is a banger especially. But it really is a bit too deep in the blues and not enough in originality. Hence I can only give 4 stars.
Love me some Stones blues!
What a fucking album, dripping with danger and darkness. Amazing songs, epic sounds and such a loose feeling. Nearly as good as Sticky Fingers! Favourite tracks: Gimme Shelter, You Got The Silver, Love in Vain, Midnight Rambler, Can't Always Get What You Want
It's Only Rock'n'Roll (but i like it)
Haven't ever listened to a Rolling Stone album before, but I really enjoyed this. 3.5*
Several great songs here. But some are just ok.
Although I know almost all the songs, I had never actually listened to this album. Really strong stones record. Probably peak era. Catchy and swaggering.
Starts off and ends with fantastic songs, but I was hoping for more from the middle of the album. The country version of Honky Tonk Woman was quite interesting, especially as that's how the song was originally written and the rest was fine, but not great. Debated between high 3 and low 4, but going to go with 4*.
Since when were the Rolling Stones abducted by aliens and replaced by a funky mellow blues band
What an opening song!!
Great album and nothing too much to say for me— some of the live tracks are better but that’s something I disagree with Bryan on (presumably). For instance Midnight Rambler has a great 12 min live track.
Good one
This albums is really good in my opinion but i dont see why this is so highly rated. Sure "Gimmie Shelter" and "You Can't Always Get What You Want" are great (probably two of the best stone's songs) but the rest of this album just feels like filler to get between the two songs. That being said i do like some of those songs "Love in Vain" and the title track are great. 8/10 Favourite: Gimmie Shelter Least Favourite: Country Honk
3.5 - Good
Gimme Shelter is cracking, +1 star for that alone. You Can't Always Get What You Want is a classic. The middle of the album largely passed me by. Perhaps because of their longevity, but I am not really sure that The Rolling Stones have a concrete identity. Gimme Shelter is as different to Angie as is Paint it, Black to Honky Tonk Woman. I'm all for artistic development, but I just don't get it. A solid 3.5 album.
Never been a big stones fan, but I think this is more what I was expecting from them compared to exile on main street. Gimme shelter is a great track. Country honk and let it bleed are good too. 3.5, but 4 as Jamie was harsh
It's a solid album throughout. Gimme Shelter is a great intro, Midnight Rambler has some killer instrumentals, and I do like the choir and vocals in You Can't Always Get What You Want. But as a whole it doesn't convince me I'd consider it a favorite.
Favorites: Gimme Shelter, Country Honk, Let It Bleed, Midnight Rambler, You Can’t Always Get What You Want Incredible album. The Rolling Stones take blues rock in a totally new direction — their own. Gimme Shelter is one of my favorite songs of all time. Just great stuff.
Much better than Aftermath. Opener and closer are fantastic. Some decent songs in between but nothing special. Most of it sounds like covers despite only one actually being a cover. I find with The Rolling Stones that you could make several 5 star greatest hits albums, but you'd struggle to find an actual 5 star album in their discography.
Great old school blues rock.
Amazing album. One of their best.
Really like the vibes and the instrumentals Fav song - Monkey Man 4/5
I never want to like this stones album because I feel like they do honky tonk much better on sticky fingers and exile. BUT this rips. midnight rambler plus two of the best opening and closing songs on any album. she blew my nose and then she blew my miiinddd
I expected more with Gimme shelter and You Can't Always Get What You Want being the bookends for this album. A 3.5 rounded up... But I will admit it would be rounded down if I wasn't a blues person.
Good
Un hermosor
Good album bookended by the highlights. Monkey Man and Midnight Rambler are close ones tho. 7/10 Why was Honky Tonk Woman not part of this album? Dont like Country Honk as much.
I get Rolling Stones 9/10
7/10 decent sandwich with two incredible slices of bread monke
Good old rock n roll which I would highly likely listen over and over again but most of the things are what I heard before.
Not the best Stones album, but still a great album. "Gimme Shelter" and "You Can't Always Get What You Want" are all time classics though.
Okay, this is kind of amazing. There’s really so much great work here. Also, are The Stones solely responsible for starting the honky tonk trend of the 70s? While this is so clearly inspired by the old rhythm and blues from the American south, it never sounds like a copy. The music composition and production quality are truly stellar. Insanely influential. Very impressive.
Initial Thoughts: Already knew of "You Can't Always Get What You Want" Straight off the bat, "Gimme Shelter" is such a good opening; when I think of a 1969 music album (especially Rock), this is the type of song that hits at the beginning!!! Probably several movies that feature this song. 8.8/10 "Love in Vain" - Started a bit slow for me but once the simple drum beat came in, then it started to grow on me. Gives me, "Final Slow Dance Before Saying Goodybe" type of song. Bittersweetish. Favorite part is, every ".... in/to the Station" line starts; great tone, almost sounds like a quasi-vibrato. 7.2/10 "Country Honk" - Was not expecting actual country lol. Fiddler carrying as usual for this type of country / Honky-Tonk inspired music. Catchy hook. Might have to listen to again as I have to be in the mood for country; definitely better than that country pop shit that I sometimes indulge in. 7/10 "Live With Me" - Alright to me, nothing special. Like the guitar and brass (sax?) instrumental. Didn't really care much for the lyrics. I feel as if there are better rock songs on this album. 5.8/10 "Let It Bleed" - Think I've heard this song prior to listening to the album. Cream on me? Excuse me? Again, the instrumental is stellar and vocally very attractive. Not sure if this is one I have on repeat. oh wait he straight up says c*m on me? Aight. I feel as if you're not a TRS fan, you wouldn't be able to fully comprehend this song... so ik I'll probably make those fans upset but this is after one listen. Sonically good, lyrically questionable for me (I'll have to do a deep dive to see if there's a deeper meaning). 6.5/10 "Midnight Rambler" - Like the swing on this one. Like the lyrics and storytelling---is this about a murderer or something? As someone who doesn't listen to much blues, it is a pleasure to hear it every once in a while. Probably one of my favorites. Longer, but I like the slowdown at ~5 mins. 8.2/10 "You Got the Silver" - Meh, I was zoning in and out of this one when listening but it picks up for me in the last minute. Who hurt bro though? 7/10 "Monkey Man" - Idk what it is, but the first 3 lines really feel appropriate for Mick Jagger to sing. Keep in mind, idk TRS or Mick that well at all, but he really makes this song instantly better. Probably intentional, but I love how he straight up sounds like a monkey at the end. 8.7/10 "You Can't Always Get What You Want" - Classic for me, like many others, this is probably one of the first TRS songs you hear. I always had a friend quoting the chorus so it's replayability is high. Gotta be a Top 100 Rock Song of All TIme right? 9.2/10
I am definitely a "Jimmy Miller produced era" Stones man - and although I don't think this quite hits the heights of the two albums that would follow, there are still a number of bona fide bangers on here - Gimme Shelter and Monkey Man ("the Charlatans based their whole career off this song" - Glen Hyde c.1994) to name but two...
Helps me prove my hypothesis that the Beatles had better albums, but the stones had better singles. Gimme shelter is probably one of the best songs of all time but gun to my head if you ask me to name more than 3 songs on this album I’d tell you to pull the trigger. Still love gimme shelter
4.5~
A high four for me, and definitely my favorite of the Stones albums I've heard so far. Gimme Shelter and You Can't Always Get What You Want are such perfect songs - problem is, I just want to keep replaying them. Though I did enjoy the rest of the album too!
Good
I know the big hits but have never listened to a full album. Really loved some of the country-tinged songs, especially the title track. Favorites: Gimme Shelter, Let It Bleed, You Can't Always Get What You Want Would I listen to it again: Yes
The production's very 60s and not in a good way, but there are some absolute classics here, and I love Charlie's drumming.
monke
Vintage Stones.
Stara klasika, cely album jsem si poslechl poprve v zivote
Scorsese's favourite album. I mean, the guy LOVES the Stones but he really used Gimme Shelter in THREE films. And can you really blame him? If anything, having heard that and You Can't Always Get What You Want so many times in my life makes them feel a bit out of place on this album. Not because they don't fit but because they are so prominent in popular culture. The rest of the album admittedly did not have the same meteoric impact that the songs that bookend this album did, but after reading about the circumstances of the recording of this album it is fascinating that they were able to dip their toes into so many different genres and come away with a very entertaining and varied album. While every song does feel fresh (and also has Keith Richards on vocals for the first, and thankfully not last, time), it never quite reaches the highs of the two big hits here with the exception of Love In Vain which was a very pleasant discovery for me. Overall, two masterpiece songs does not make a perfect album and there are a few tracks here which I had middling feelings towards on most of my listens. A phenomenal album, but not their best. Highlights: Gimme Shelter, Love In Vain, Let It Bleed, You Got The Silver, You Can't Always Get What You Want
The overall score doesn’t suggest it, but this album calcified me as a Stones Hater. Have always liked Let It Bleed, thought it would be a slam dunk 5 here. Certainly the best Stones album I think. If a guy were to build a Mount Rockmore of songs, I think it would be hard to keep Gimme Shelter off there. Title track is a great song. Can’t Always Get What You Want is a great song. But my god, listening to Mick Jagger do a straight earnest take on Love in Vain, followed immediately by the borderline-parody sounding Country Honk is rough. I get that before 1955, the only song English people knew was Greensleeves, so I’m sure it was very titillating to hear good American music. It makes sense that rock got so big so fast there. But is there anything worse than hearing a guy like Mick Jagger sing Robert Johnson? Or push a country song through his nose? Awful. And to think they are STILL going today!
10th stones album. Influence from gospel, country blues and country rock. Sounds very American. Nice laid-back country rock.
As a teen, I remember thinking that legendary bands like Rolling Stones and the Beatles were overrated and boring (because nobody knows better than a teenager, right?). As I’ve gotten older and somewhat more decrepit, I can definitely appreciate these older gems a lot more. This might be the most dad-rock album to exist, but there’s a reason why tracks like Gimme Shelter still get so much radio play. This is good old fashioned blues rock from front to back, oozing with charisma.
Has the majority of top stones hits. I like the ones not so popular such as love in vain, track 2. Track listing not the same order as on rear of cd Other than the best of stones 2 cd album, this is my favorite stones album. Has a diverse range of genres that take make you appreciate the good songs. Especially when tired of hearing the songs that always get air play in the radio. It's an album the more you play the more you hear in the movements
I mean, it's the stones man. I will say, following home shelter with love in vain, is a choice. It kind of killed the momentum for me. But it finishes with one of the greatest songs in rock and roll.
talk about a START and a FINISH could i write poetry to this? y
Amazing opening
Interesting to contrast the musical skill of this album versus the Friday album by the Ramones. Simple can be good but not always.
They are genius. I never really loved The Rolling Stones, but you can’t deny their talent.
Might be my favorite stones album so far.
Not the biggest stones fan, but this one, this one, is of course pretty good!
You really can't go wrong with the Stones. Gimmie Shelter has got to be up there with my favorite Stones songs and is a great opener for this album. Country Honk, I guess, is a different version of the more popular Honky Tonk Women (I like the latter more). It seems like they were going for a more bluesy or country sound in this record. You definitely feel that in the meat of the album. Monkey Man was a song that was a late album standout and obviously Can't Always Get What You Want is a classic (overplayed in the mainstream, but still solid). I would grade this as a solid 4. Doesn't quite reach levels of a 5 after Gimmie Shelter.
Very good album with an absolute classic of an ending song. Was bordering in the 3.5 realm until You Cant Always Get What You Want which is really up there for favorite songs of all time. No real blemishes on this one either.
This album was filled with way more songs that I knew than I originally thought looking at the track list. Just some absolute classics when it comes to Rock. Monkey Man and YCAGWYW to end it were the best two songs.
Gimme Shelter is an obvious jam. Top tier song ever imo. Did not realize Country Honk was the original way Honky Tonk Woman was written. I think I prefer Honky Tonk. Let It Bleed is dirty! Lots of cream and coming on. Midnight Rambler is a nice bluesy number. Weird hearing Keith Richards sing on You Got The Silver. Not bad. Monkey Man is another jam. Heard it in a bunch of movies/tv shows. Finally, You Can't Always Get What You Want is another absolute classic. This is a high ass 4. If they maybe replace Country Honk with Honky Tonk then that might bump it to a 5. But alas a high 4.
Some great songs on here. Love the closer
Classic album with classic tunes
Never really noticed how Dylan-esque this era of the Stones was. And the bookend tracks are perfect.
Cool record to listen to, incredible production and mixing. Then a mix of slow and good songs to just pass the time. For the time, very good, will add it to my collection.
Good
pretty cool
What an album, starting off with Gimme Shelter, a top tier banger. A good album overall with several high highs.
Not a bad song, Gimme Shelter +1, You Can’t Always Get What You Want +1
Whoa! I used to love this album. I think this was the album that helped me love the Rolling Stones. I'd bought a few greatest hits albums to kind of acclimate to them. And my dad was a fan when I was growing up. But this was the first one that had a bunch of singles that made me go, "These guys really know what they are doing." I think it is still my second favorite album after Exile on Main Street, but they are completely different feeling albums. Gimme Shelter- why did it take me 30 years to look up these lyrics? Love in Vain- Robert Johnson's version is better, and not just because it is the original. The Stones do a great job with country and country blues. But I don't think Mick's voice carries country songs well. Country Honk Live with Me Let It Bleed- a cool country rocker about drugs Midnight Rambler You Got the Silver Monkey Man- the only song on the album I never got into You Can't Always Get What You Want- what a wonderful closing to the album- and if you think about it- the opener is a raging protest song against (probably) the Vietnam War. The closer is an acknowledgment that the war may not end. That protesting may not work. That people will protest against each other. So look for the happiness where you can get it.
Day441 - maybe not my favorite stones album but gimme shelter is my favorite song
Gimmie Shelter is an all time banger and in my opinion, the best Stones song. This album would've gotten five stars if Honky Tonk Women was on here instead of Country Honk. But that slip up costs them a star. Still, a pretty damn good Stones album.
Being one of the most iconic bands in all of music, The Rolling Stones have achieved a discography of over 30 studio albums, which is insane. Out of all of those albums though, many people consider this their best. And I have to say, I think I agree. This was the most fun I’ve had with a Rolling Stones album, and there were few moments that took me out of it. Right off of the bat, the opener *Gimme Shelter* is absolutely killer. Mick Jagger’s loud vocals add to the feeling that something is coming that the song encapsulates so well. Merry Clayton’s guest vocals are stellar as well, and help make *Gimme Shelter* one of the best album openers there is. *Gimme Shelter* also encapsulates what makes this album great. Enthusiastic performances, clean production, and a fun and engaging tone and atmosphere. Another example of this is the title track, *Let It Bleed*. Its catchy and alternating chorus is great. This album is also a bit tongue-in-cheek, with some more raunchy songs thrown in like *Live With Me* and *Let It Bleed*. However, one of the best tracks is the closer, *You Can’t Always Get What You Want*. Its choir makes it feel angelic when it’s present. That combined with the blues rock fusion makes this an absolutely incredible closer. Mick’s performance and presence in the song is excellent. The one song that didn’t sit right with me, *Country Honk*,felt like a watered down version of their single *Honky Tonk Woman*. However, this album is still a classic in its own right and for good reason. It’s among The Rolling Stones best. I’d recommend it.
Let It Bleed is one of my top Rolling Stones albums. For a long time, all I owned was a Greatest Hits Collection for the Stones. I seemed content with that. A few years back, I decided I would check out some of their albums and one of them was Let It Bleed. After listening to it again for this particular project, it seems my thoughts are still the same. Gimme Shelter and You Can’t Always Get What You Want are monster songs. Epic in their own right. I don’t mind the country songs but I do prefer Honky Tonk Woman over Country Honk. The “cream on” line in Let It Bleeds always creeps me out a little. And I’ve come to really like Monkey Man and Midnight Rambler the more I listen. It’s a great album by The Stones and gets a 4 from me. 4/5
Good album. I’m not a huge Rolling Stones fan so this almost slipped to a 3 but there were enough impressive songs to push it to 4
Bueno bueno.
This record is overrated to say the least. Singles are the bookend tracks and what lies between is just filler. There is a fun track a cool one, a blues rocker, but this doesn't have the soul that Beggars does, the energy of Sticky Fingers, or the grandiose of Exile.
4.3 - 3 stunning songs in gimme shelter, monkey man and you cant always get what you want. However the rest of the album was really filler
Opener and closer are 10's stuff in between is decent
Probably the best of the Rolling Stones that I've heard on this list so far. I usually don't have strong opinions either way on their music, and I don't here either, but this album leaned a little more toward good than their albums usually do for me.
Crazy that this is the first time I've listened to a full album by The Rolling Stones. It was good! Diverse. The stereo production was kinda crazy. I lost a little interest in the twangier tracks, and the title track was pretty raunchy, but it was all made up for by "You Can't Always Get What You Want." What a song! This was good, I would say it's a must-listen. #88.
Two absolute classics top and tail this and there's some good stuff in the middle too but a few that aren't as interesting.
I really considered giving this a 5, however you can’t always get what you want brings this down to a 4. I love the rolling stones but I do not love that song
Best of the Stones albums I've had so far. Gimme Shelter the clear highlight but the pace and tempo is pretty solid throughout. Good length, not much filler
banger.
I feel like I should be in a shitty dive bar somewhere listening to this, but I'm stuck at work.
One of my favorite songs is on this one.
Really enjoyed it. Some really bluesy music sandwiched by two all time greats. Wasn't what I was expecting, but definitely better. 8/10
Great
Great album
a nice mix of styles and no bad songs
Really liked Gimme Shelter and Let It Bleed; didn't care much for the rest of the album. I feel like it only made it on the list for the icon status of You Can't Always Get What You Want
Probably more of a 3.5 stars, which feels patently ridiculous to say: this record, among the Stones' opuses, led off by one of the most chilling rock songs ever put to tape... 7/10. To one's own self be true, however. I've never understood how Beatles vs. Stones was ever even a remotely interesting debate. One wrote half of the pop canon by 1970. The other is the recipient of the 2025 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album, whose bassist, by the way, is (quoting from Wikipedia) "his own son's ex-son-in-law, the father-in-law of his ex-mother-in-law, as well as the stepgrandfather of his ex-wife." But what do those extratextual details matter? The album starts with Gimme Shelter and ends with You Can't Always Get What You Want! The seven songs in between vary in quality, but those bookends are enough to make it an unimpeachable classic.
4/5. As an album, this is definitely not the best Stones album but it does have some great songs on here that does take to above average. Gimme Shelter and You Can't Always Get take it to a 3 alone but there are some other good songs on here that make the album a solid listen all the way through. Definitely some lazy songs that we can do without but most are great. Best Song: Gimme Shelter, You Can't Always Get What You Want, Midnight Rambler
not bad! I actually like the country & western sound for them, and i think it sounds good in Jagger's voice. there weren't really any songs that knocked me out with how good they were (other than maybe "Gimme Shelter") but I enjoyed myself and I'll probably listen again at some point in the future
At first listen, it was hard to make up my mind about this album. I didn’t hate it as venomously as other people seemed to hate it anyway, I knew that much. Eventually, I decided that I liked it; like it enough to give it four stars, even. I think what caught me off guard was this faux country/American folk cosplay the Stones seem to be guilty of at times, which maybe I would be more forgiving of if they were actually American and not from London. However, the songs that were good were really good. This record is wedged between two absolute belters of tunes, Gimme Shelter and You Can’t Always Get What You Want. Seminal Rolling Stones songs, absolute stompers. Some people seemed to think the rest of the album didn’t hold up but I quite liked the middle part. I really liked Let it Bleed and Midnight Rambler. I remember this album, unlike a lot of other albums on this list, which counts for something. It was a big improvement from the last Stones album I listened to but so far, The Stone Roses are still ahead in the Stone war.
Enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would! Love the blues here.
Gotta love the Stones
Bookended by two absolutely massive songs, with the rest of the album being completely serviceable. As a full package, it's not perfect, but probably the blues-iest and most enjoyable Stones package I've gotten so far on this list.
The ones you always hear on the radio don't do much for me anymore, but I thought the deep tracks on the album were really good. Though, a lot of these songs don't song as good once you hear them live off of "Get Yer Ya Ya's Out."
Good tracks throughout, but what elevates the album is starting with Gimme Shelter and ending with You Can't Always Get What You Want.
4- Stars (10/15)
Great capsule of their work. Not sure it’s 5 but opens and closes so well, with a lot of meat in between.
Bookended by Gimme Shelter and You Can't Always Get, this is largely run of the mill blues rock, but they do it so well for some British geezers. 3 Stones album in quick succession from this generator. Ive had enough.
I liked this one. It has a lot of classics that I've known my whole life, but haven't really sat down and listened to the original album. Morning very different than what I expected, but it was pretty solid. Definitely more single hits than a full-scope album experience.
Gimme shelter is a belter
It's good. Country Mick Jagger is always funny. But they still pull it off somehow.
At the beginning of this album I was convinced I had started a Scorsese movie. Really great record. Love the bluesy rock sound.
One of my great musical memories is tied up in Let it Bleed. At probably 19, I was driving from SF up to the Sierras. In summer, the stretch leading from the Valley into the Sierra Foothills is all rolling hills covered in dry golden grass. Gimme Shelter came on shuffle, and that song with the windows down on that road was as perfect a match of music and moment as I've ever had. I like the rest of the album, but it never reaches the heights of Gimme Shelter again. Thats one of my all time great songs. It'd be a straight 4, but it gets demoted to 3.75 (still rounded up to 4) for Mick Jagger's choice to write, sing, and widely publish the lines: "Yeah, we all need someone we can cream on. Yeah, and if you want you can cream on me)" Go to jail Mick, because that line is a crime. Album Cover: (B+) Its iconic, but I dont get the cake.
"Gimme Shelter" is a very famous song that I didn't recognize right away. It's pretty sweet. Iconic vocals. "Love In Vain" is a very different song. It feels like Bob Dylan. "Country Honk" is a great song. I had genuinely no idea the Rolling Stones wrote songs like this. "You Can't Always Get What You Want" is a classic, I like it a lot. This album surprised me. The Stones are clearly more interesting than I thought they were. 8/10
