Reviews (page 7 of 14)
7/10 this has two absolute masterpieces and a whole lot of listenable stuff. For as much as I say I don't like the rolling stones that much, you wouldn't be able to tell from my scores on the albums I've gotten so far. 1-31-2025
Great album. Classic
Fini album, klasik.
Zato ide 8/10
Amazing record. C'mon, it's the Rolling F'n Stones !!
Great album! Not every song a banger but some classics!
he’s a monkey
4.4 top album van de stones Beste plaat is gimme shelter
A bit too honky tonk, but bookended by 2 great songs
I thought his would be better based on the name alone, but sometimes expectations don’t match reality, it was a fine album but I was expecting more.
Great opening and ending. Pretty good middle.
It's not Sticky Fingers- Robby For Gimme Shelter and all the bluesy guitar -d
Was excited for Stones album. My dad is a massive fan but I’ve always been more of a Beatles guy. This was a great album, didn’t blow me away like the 5 star albums I’ve had so far but thoroughly enjoyed it. The opening and closing tracks are really good. Overall, a great listen!
i really do like the rolling stones, i’m not sure how or why i hadn’t listened to them much before but you can’t beat them. liked monkey man and let it bleed made me giggle
Stones shred
Cool album, would listen again for e.g. driving or cleaning up 4/5
83/100. A very solid country rock record by The Rolling Stones. The album has a consistent sound and is pleasant to the ears. The only downside is that it loses momentum toward the middle and early end of the record.
Another solid outing from the Stones. The songs always sound like covers of other songs to me, but that doesn't stop the enjoyment.
This is the second album from The Rolling Stones I've generated in the last three days, and this is clearly the better one. It opens up with an anti-war message, and closes with a harsh reality of life. There are also some good songs in between. Favorite Song: "Gimmie Shelter"
Not a fan of monkey man even though it is consistent with the rest of the album
It starts with "Gimme Shelter" and closes with "You Can't Always Get What You Want", of course it's worth listening to.
This has three of their biggest songs and bunch of countryish songs that made me think I kept listening to a different band/album. 7/10
i really enjoyed this album i didn’t think i would enjoy it but my favourites are definitely you can’t always get what you want and gimme shelter. there were a few songs which were more country style but they are still good songs, but not my favs.
Pretty good. Lots of blues vibes. Some songs I recognized. Some I didn’t. Would listen to again.
classic for a reason
A rocking good time. The jams and the attitude make for a high energy ride. The outro of “you can’t always get what you want” is nice, especially with its iconic choir lead in, but it’s all about the barroom tunes like “Midnight Rambler” for me.
Likely my favorite album of theirs. Really enjoy the country/blues influence. 4/5 Will listen again
Not even the line "you can cream on me" could diffuse the sheer greatness of Gimme Shelter and You Can't Always Get What You Want. What a difference from the self-titled album!
All time classic, although they are a bit boring for me.
Deep cuts aren't remarkable IMO, while still being good. But, boy oh boy, are YOU CAN'T ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU WANT, GIMME SHELTER, COUNTRY HONK, and MONKEY MAN, worth their weight in gold.
4.3
big fan had heard before
Alright
Gimme Shelter is so good this album almost gets a 5, but the rest of the album was not that impressive for me. Still, it’s the Stones, all sounds good and very American in a British sort of way.
One of the classic Stones albums, all very bluesy and I love it, all the albums stands up. As I get old the more I appreciate how great the stones were back in the early days. Bring black / blues music to the UK. The newest album Hackney Diamonds is also really good go check it out. Stand out tracks: - Gimme Shelter - Country Honk - Let it bleed - You can't aways get what you want
classic, great songs, i love the different sounds on the album
Some really good songs on here.
Pretty solid, I enjoyed this
Damn good bluesy rock. Best track - gumme shelter
9/10 1969. Blues/Rock/Country Midnight Rambler You Can't Always Get What You Want Gimme Shelter Live With Me
Some tracks not my vibe but others I like - mixed bag
Someday I should look into how an English rock band nailed an entire album of American honky-tonk sound. Also Merry Clayton performs the best backing vocal track of all time on Gimme Shelter, with her voice cracking with emotion. Frisson every time.
Although there are simply too many Rolling Stones albums in this collection (and this is only #2 of 6 total, sadly), I'm appreciative that this is a strong Rolling Stones album at least. It's bookended by two great classics in "Gimme shelter" and "You can't always get what you want", while the remainder in between is largely new to me and pretty uneven, which is about what I expected. "Midnight rambler" and "Monkey man" are strong songs (and possibly part of their repertoire? They sound familiar, in any case). Thankfully, there aren't too many stinkers in the lot, although "Love in vain" is pretty painful (and also surprisingly Dylanesque, although I now discover that it's a cover of a Robert Johnson song from 1937), and I'm not really sure what to make of "Country honk", as it's clearly the same song as their classic "Honky tonk women" but this version is weirdly thin and not very Stonesy (I wish they'd dropped this version from the album and included "Honky tonk women" instead of releasing the latter as a standalone single, but I'm sure that was a money thing). Likewise for the title track, which starts off feeling like some weird saloon version of itself--is this really the version that got so much airplay for years afterward? I'm not sure why this Rolling Stones album in particular made me feel particularly aware of how much (blues) appropriation they profited from (it could have been all the reviews talking about how "authentic" they sound), but it does, and it's hard to unhear now that I've noticed it. It also makes it hard to know what to rate this album, but misgivings aside the number of classic songs means it's probably deserving of four stars.
It’s gritty, soulful, and a little bit dangerous, like the feeling of being on the edge of something wild. The rhythms swagger in a way that brings Creedence Clearwater Revival to mind, but with a nastier, more defiant streak. The harmonies feel both reckless and intimate, like they’re barely holding together. It’s unpolished, but that’s what gives it its punch.
Gimme shelter is pulling a lot of weight here. Good album though
Already knew this epic album
Pretty nice, but only the first and last track are really good, the rest I don't know too good and sounds a bit boring on first listen. 7/10
This is an example of what makes the Stones great. Solid record.
Hit and run raper in anger song is good trust jake is a monkey man who can't always get what he wants
The Good: Rolling Stones sharp as knives The Bad: Knives can cut, and it seems we need to Let It Bleed… The Ugly: That we are celebrating this bleeding with a cake and a record… What is there to say, that hasn’t been said before? One of the greatest Rock n Roll bands ever… yet, on this album, on one too many songs, they are trying to be a straight from the Mississippi Delta, and that just hasn’t aged well. Gimme Shelter and You Can’t Always Get What You Want are on most people’s Top 50 Greatest tunes ever, which means 4* It would be 5* if there was more cohesion and less trying to be something they are not...
A classic album for a reason. Really good stuff on here.
Very much a record of two half’s. There’s the first and last tracks then everything else. Very very uneven. But Gimme shelter is worth the album price alone. 4 stars for shelter.
It’s The Stones, so you know it’s good, but it’s not their best album. A lot of filler here, bookended by two bangers. Shows the blues side of the band.
I never seem to be disappointed with the Stones albums when they were good, so like the 60’s and 70’s. I get why they were so popular. Gritty blues, acoustic rock, harmonized jams. I’m just confused as to why I say something like I just did and not dig deeper into them. This album flows nicely, keeping the tempo riding along at a pace you could road-trip in. This is the type of album you could have a conversation over and not get pissed at the other person for talking over your favorite part. I will say, this album doesn’t make me what to return to it like a 5 star album would, according to me at least, that’s the only fault in it. Choice cut: Gimme Shelter
8.1
Yeah this is a bit more solid than most stones albums / any rock album of its time. I think the biggest standout on here is the moments of restraint mick and the band use on some arrangements - they know when to go crazy and Gimme Shelter it, but they know when to pull it back and You Can’t Always Get What You Want it
This has two of the best songs of all time. Some of the best backing vocals ever as well. I won tickets in college to see Crosby & Nash after identifying a snippit of monkey man. 🤷🏻♂️ Some of the songs are filler, but most of it is solid. A strong 4.4!
Imagine putting this album on for the first time in 1969 and experiencing Gimme Shelter right out of the gate. Stones are a hit machine, starting with this album.
Første og sidste number er åbenlyst langt bedre end resten af pladen, men der er faktisk mange cool sange på og det flyder godt! Meget godt, fungerer bedre som plade end jeg huskede!
Great songs!
would’ve been 5/5 but lost a star for country honk bc the hell was that
Pretty solid entry, very bluesy and "American" outing for the Stones. Two massive hits off the album, and Midnight Rambler is a great tune as well. The rest was ok, interesting slower take on Honky Tonk Woman.
I've never listened to this album in its entirety before, but it's amazing how many of the songs got a lot of radio play. I enjoyed pretty much everything on this album, and will probably add this to my regular rotation.
Pretty Damn good! There were definitely some weird songs on there, but for the most part, its fantastic Saturday morning blues/rock music.
Really solid blues/country rock album. Opens and closes with some absolute classics. The instrumentation is interesting and solid, and the vocals are catchy.
So good. I love the return to their roots with the electric blues. Every single song on this record is digestible and unskippable. I feel like I'm listening to a Scorsese movie when I turn this on, especially with Gimme Shelter. Love in Vain is a perfect blues song, followed by an amazing country rock song with Country Honk every song after is so good, but I love how it ends on You Can't Always Get What You Want. I love this record.
Probably the best opening and closing tracks on a stones album, but in between doesn’t quiet match up to sticky fingers or exile on Main Street. That’s why this is the stones 3rd best album, still more than worth of this list though.
Another really strong one. A couple songs on here that kind of sum up the issues I have with them but they’re surrounded by such great tracks that it more than makes up for it. Tough on where I’d put this one in my ranking of their albums but it’s gotta be up there. Rating: 4.5
Gimme Shelter is my favorite
My folks played this one a lot growing up
Enjoyed this one.
My third favorite Stones album With my two favorite Rolling Stones songs opening and closing the album. Gimme Shelter. Feels dirty, scared, You Can’t Always Get What You Want- Dooh Wah. Those two are 10 out of 10. Incredible best song of all types of songs. Rest of the album feels good too. Some bangers solid material. I give it an 8 1/2 or nine out of 10 if that was the scale so I’m gonna go to a four out of five.
Not totally totally my thing, mainly because I wish they’d speed up a bit. But still very good
Very nice album, enjoyed listening to this, it was pretty good although there was only one major hit in there. Having this in the background was nice.
Some of the best rock songs of all time, but unfortunately, a few others that fall pretty flat. Overall, a great album with a lot of different musical influences and compelling lyrics
Album saved on my phone = Certified banger. Giving a 4 feels harsh but it doesn't quite reach that 5. Some big tracks on this one but I didn't realise how much Monkey Man slaps
Great Album
Let It Bleed is one of the Rolling Stones' albums I'm most familiar with, mainly because my son, as a toddler, became obsessed with the iconic album cover. He dubbed it the "cake song" and insisted we play “You Can't Always Get What You Want” on repeat 15 times daily. My own introduction to the album came years earlier when a classmate played it on cassette, whispering, “You must hear this,” as if he had unearthed the most underground band in history. Nice try, mate! Let’s get the obvious out of the way: any album that opens with “Gimme Shelter” and closes with “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” is an automatic classic. These two tracks are timeless; any artist dreams of writing something even a fraction as powerful. Among the lesser-known tracks (if such a thing even exists in the Stones' extensive catalogue), “Live With Me” perfectly encapsulates Jagger's swagger and Richards' edgy guitar tone. The title track takes country influences and spins them on their head in a rollicking fashion that builds on the band's strengths. “Midnight Rambler” would sound pedestrian in the hands of any other band but is glorious here, starting with an upbeat riff that gradually reveals a menacing undercurrent. “Monkey Man” features a distinctive groove with reggae influences, showcasing Jagger’s playful charisma. As the song progresses, he becomes increasingly frenetic, while Richards delivers his trademark catchy guitar riffs, complemented by horn arrangements and Charlie Watts’ legendary steady drumming. Some tracks may resonate more with Stones purists. “Country Honk,” a stripped-down reworking of “Honky Tonk Women,” feels redundant, and the repetitive blues structure of “Love in Vain” misses the mark. Nonetheless, the Stones infuse these songs with their signature flair, even if they don’t stand out in the band's extensive discography. Compared to its predecessor, Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed is more eclectic in genre experimentation while boasting bigger riffs and possibly more memorable melodies. For me these albums are near equals, and while it feels odd to call Let It Bleed a transitional record, it paved the way for Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main St., both of which refine the elements explored here. Exile, in particular, embraces the chaos surrounding the band, resulting in one of their most immersive experiences ever recorded. Ultimately, Let It Bleed is a pivotal moment in the Stones' evolution—by no means perfect, but undeniably iconic. Did/Do I own this release? No. Does this release belong on the list? From a historical perspective, it's a landmark album, even if its best tracks are the opener and the closer. Would this release make my personal list? I like the Stones, but there’s so much to savour in their discography that it’s hard to pick a definitive album. Will I be listening to it again? Overall, it’s an enjoyable experience with incredible peaks, and as I grow older, I find myself drawn to the Stones more than ever.
The Stones earlier stuff is phenomenal, and this is one of their best.
Very good. Didn’t think I liked The Rolling Stones that much but maybe not. 1. Gimme shelter 2. Live with me 3. You can’t always get what you want
A really fun listen. The first song was insanely good. The others didn't match up to it but still solid.
Love the bluesy Stones
Bookended by 2 absolute masterpieces the rest of the album is ok… Other stand out tracks for me were Midnight Rambler and Country Hook the rest were a bit run of the mill.
Excellent album, enjoyable all the way through. I always thought of the beatles and rolling stones as the 2 iconic British bands of the 60s. Listening to this made me appreciate how different they are. Rolling Stones really lean into Americana on this album - honky tonk, blues, rock and roll. Done in a really cool way. Stands the test of time. Clearly influential for a lot of rock bands that followed through the 70s and beyond. Gimme Shelter is one of my favourite songs by them, and it really kicks of the album.
8/10. Some classics. Great album overall.
Bookended by 2 of the greatest Stones songs ever.
Awesome album!
Strongest album opener ever? Gimme Shelter is one of the most powerful songs, with lyrics that are unfortunately just as relevant 55 years later. The guest vocals by Merry Clayton (I had to look that up) are absolutely insane and really the song would not be nearly as amazing without them. The rest of the album is pretty decent but it would be impossible to keep up the quality after that opener. You can’t always get what you want is a very strong closing song. Overall this album suffers a little from a lack of consistency but the highs outweigh the lows.
Hell yeah Not quite 5 stars but very solid album
A classic in the Rolling Stones discography. The Stones lean into what they did best here, and that's hard/blues-oriented rock. I could personally take or leave the few British honkey tonk, country-like tracks though. A pretty heavy and dirty album at points, this album is bookended with some classics. All things considered, a pretty good production given the turmoil within the group at the time.
can’t deny that it’s good but no new songs grabbed me besides the ones i already knew :(
Great album, honestly I've underrated the Rolling Stones for far too long mainly due to my disinterest in a couple of their albums I listened to early but this Sticky Fingers have convinced me I didn't know the Stones at all - a lot of fun :)
I'm a simple man. I love the Rolling Stones
Certainly one of the better Stones albums on this list, and certainly a favorite of mine. Though having done a full listen for the first time in a long time, I will say the middle of this record drags just a bit too much.
Come for the opening and closing tracks you’ve heard too many times, stay for the penultimate track you’ve heard too few.
Pretty edgy for 1969. I liked it, several songs I would come back to including Gimme Shelter, Let It Bleed, and Can't Always Get What You Want
Just for the major hits, this gets a 4. Without those, its a 3.
This album has one of the best starting and concluding songs written. The rest of the music is fine. Personal enjoyment: 3/5 Relevance to this list: 5/5
Pretty good Stones record. Sounds very much like a "gateway to the 70's" album; the songs Gimme Shelter, Live With Me and Midnight Rambler all have such a cool sound that's easy to place in time. The title track is great; super dirty! 3.5/5
Nice bluesy rock, old school Stones. Not their best, but there are a few truly great tracks on this album.
Honestly, this band is really overrated. Favourite Songs: Gimme Shelter, Let It Bleed, Midnight Rambler, You Can't Always Get What You Want. Least Favourite Songs: Country Honk, Live with Me.
Great music and tunes. The hits are masterpieces. I can't get past jaggers voice on half the songs though. It's sacrelig, but a lot of stones songs would be better with another vocalist
One of the best albums and the best inspiration period of the band
Solid
Merry Clayton, Gimme Shelter - it’s all there
An album that starts with Gimme Shelter is always going to be pretty damn good. Love in Vain continues well. Some decent but somewhat forgetable songs until we get to the last part of the album, with Monkey Man and You Can't Always Get What You Want finishing it off strongly. 4.25*
The middle of the album starts to blend together but honestly a solid album and an absolute classic
one of the best stones albums, so many hits
Good opening and then it kinda went down from there, but it's the Stones so it's good, right? Right?
Just a well-qualified classic. Never gets worse.
Good week with two Rolling Stones albums. Killer band. I like them more and more the more I listen. I’m familiar with the greatest hits, but their entire catalog is worth a listen. Hard to pick which album I liked better. Solid either way.
To be honest, I recall this album being better than this. Midnight Rambler and You Can't Always Get... are elite rock'n'roll and obvious standouts. I also quite like Gimme Shelter but there's a lot more forgettable in there than I'd remembered, which I guess makes sense somehow. 3 stars feels a bit low; it's consistently solid even if it's only fleetingly outstanding. Let's say a light 4, definitely would be a 3.5 if it were possible.
liked it, Love in Vain was awesome
Not their best album but still a great album. Just goes to show how good they are that this isnt their best album and its great.
Production has aged beautifully. Mick jagger rocks and so does Charlie watts. Some of the songs were a hair long.
Big win. Like this much better than the other Rolling Stones album we heard, and that one was p good too! Awesome stuff though.
i expected this album to be a direct repeat of “beggars banquet”, but i was pleasantly surprised upon hearing it. i really enjoyed this album, an eclectic mix of slower songs and more upbeat ones, creating a fine balance. i also found jagger’s vocals more agreeable on this album, and much less forced than previous ones. i think their return to their original, more bluesy sound was a good choice, resulting in a more interesting album than what they had previously released. overall, i enjoyed it immensely.
A return to form with their 8th studio album, much more bluesy and country rock than the harder or more mainstream stuff I’m used to. Really enjoyed it
Good but not as good as Stinky Fingers. Low to mid 4 stars.
I did not expect to be returning to the Stones so soon, but you can never have expectations for what you might get each day. As I mentioned previously, Exile on Main St. made me considerably more excited to hear what else this band had to offer. For today, I went back a few years to 1969 to dive into Let It Bleed. The aforementioned album really seems to be the best of everything the band was capable of. But this record focuses far more on the country and blues side of things. It’s something they hadn’t explored since Aftermath, and the albums that preceded it. Which, as shown by my reviews, I was not a fan of. But I figured this was going to be a little more enjoyable at the least, considering their abilities as musicians had definitely improved. Thankfully this album is good. Not Exile good. But still a worthwhile experience. It’s considerably more stripped back in comparison, and I think that’s what makes this less interesting to me. I was REALLY a fan of that party-like atmosphere that made Exile such a fun listen. This takes its time a little more, and isn’t as diverse from song to song. It’s starts insanely strong though. And ends decently strong as well. I sort of fail to see what is so amazing about that closing track. It’s good, not great. Gimme Shelter, on the other hand, is fantastic, and another one of their songs I recognize from my childhood. Seems like my dad played The Rolling Stones a lot more than I thought. It might be a bit too strong of a start. Because that song simply overshadows everything that comes after it. And only a few other tracks really get close to being as good. I may have expected too much from this album. I’ll just have to keep that in mind for their future albums. This is supposedly a follow-up to Beggars Banquet, so I’m intrigued to see if I like that any more or less. Rating: 7/10
This gets a 4 if only because of Gimme Shelter. Best Stones song...hands down. One of the best songs ever...period. The rest of the album is really great (albeit to a large extent played out).
Pretty rad album. The Stones have high expectations and sometimes the B-sides get forgotten, but each one of these songs is a banger by other standards. Will replay.
“Let It Bleed” is bookended with two of The Rolling Stones’ biggest hits. The opener is the dramatic and cinematic (featured in 3 different Scorsese movies) “Gimme Shelter.” Incredible style. There’s nothing quite like it. And the closer is the classic “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” The bulk of the album is a loose set of countrified, country-fried tunes, the highlight of which is probably the title track. I’m also a big fan of “Monkey Man.” It’s one of my favorite Stones deep cuts and I like to put it on BBQ playlists. 4.5
Best Stones's album, imo. Through years of gaslighting due to societal conformities (and because I own a Japanese pressing on CD), I actually don't mind, and even enjoy, listening to "Let It Bleed."
Great Stones album. One of the best
This is a light on the darkness at the end of the '60s, the end of the hippie dream, and the Stones' embrace of Americana. This is where they make the turn that'll lead them to Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Oh, and Merry Friggin Clayton.
Is Let It Bleed my favorite Stones album? Nah. Is it still a great record. Yep. I dig the country aspects of this and their previous album, Beggar’s Banquet. In my opinion their best work comes soon after this. But compare this with the more saccharine songs the Beatles put out this same year and I’ll take this.
Excellent
Arguably the Stones best
Another album that was more country-influenced than I realized: Standouts are Let It Bleed, You Can't Always Get What You Want, Monkey Man, and Gimme Shelter
I've never heard the Stones beyond what's on the radio. I was surprised at the almost Southern American sound present here, and the almost goofiness of some of the songs. A solid album, and I'm glad I listened to it.
Good one
Thoughts before listening: One of the Stones' classic albums from their best era. Off the top of my head I can't remember what's on this one, but the band put out nothing but heat in the late 60s/early 70s. I believe this one came out before Exile and Sticky Fingers, and while I believe those are their 2 best albums, I know that this one if great as well. Review: The Stones playing bluesy, sloppy honk tonk with pianos and horns throughout this album. I really enjoy it although there are a few songs that drag the album down a bit. Still though, "Gimme Shelter" and "You Can't Always Get What You Want" are absolute classics, and I also really like the song "Let It Bleed". All in all this is a 4-star album that doesn't quite match the Stones' high water marks from that era.
Thought this was pretty good! The Stones have always alluded me as such a significant figure in classic rock but for some reason I never really got into them, think this was a great starting point though. Really great balance of some calmer, folkier songs with some heavier tracks, standouts for me were Gimme Shelter, the title track, Midnight Rambler, and You Can't Always Get What You Want. Definitely gonna give this another listen sometimes, tons of fun. 8/10
Gimme Shelter gets a star of it's own.
It’s a classic for a reason
If this was released today, nobody would batter an eyelid. But it wasn't, it wasn't even released in the 70s. Extremely futuristic.
Classic
Always great listening to a Stones album. Great tunes start to finish. Probably not my favorite album of theirs, but that's not a knock on it.
Another classic.
Quite liked this one compared to some of their other albums on this list. Is this their best album in my humble opinion?
Pretty pretty pretty good
Pretty good album, couple big hits and decent supporting cast.
You Can’t Always Get What You Want, but you can Let It Bleed.
8/10
You can't always get what you want, but if you try, sometimes you get what you need
Bookended by two classic 5's and enough in the middle to push it past a 3.5.
Bluesy
This album is 60's as fuck. White English dudes using blues, soul and country music to make songs about love, sex, drugs and serial killers. Good times.
Any album with both "Gimme Shelter" and "You Can't Always Get What You Want" has to be at least a 4.
Listened to before, but not for a while. Great album. A few small things don't work for me, but overall pretty amazing. Richards' guitar work is great throughout. Jaggers vocals are great on some songs and a bad fit on others. If the single version of Honky Tonk Women was included, of give it a 5. "When the train left the station It had two lights on behind The blue light was my baby and the red light was my mind."
A couple of great songs in here and some middle range. Not sure about the Honky Tonk stuff.
Whenever you listen to the Rolling Stones, you feel like you’re partying right alongside them. This album gets a little slow towards the end but overall is an excellent feel good album!
Not the best of theirs but really good.
lethargic singh
From the late 60s to the early 70s, The Rolling Stones were on a roll 😉
Ein paar sehr gute Songs, sonst Durchschnitt 4/5
Was für ein Opener, was für ein Abschluss.
Nice
Classics.
Best of the three Stones records so far.
Wonderfully Bluesy
Tied with Beggars Banquet as my favorite Stones album. Not a weak song and a whole bunch of absolute classics.
111/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
Apparently the Stones asked M. C. Escher to design the cover for Let It Bleed but he declined. That would have pushed this to a 5. This album is in the sweet spot of The Rolling Stones’ best era of recording 1968-1972.
i can see why its popular back in the day
It's a classic for a reason. It sounds great, the songs are memorable (and not too long), and it just has a ton of verve.
I was surprised by the heavy bluesy honky-tonk influence within so much of this album. It gave me a new perspective of The Stones music.
A little more hits focused than expected, but the hits ARE amazing…
I have a fondness for this era of Stones albums--they're nasty, dirty, and finally living up to their reputations. This isn't Beggar's Banquet or Goat's Head Soup or even Sticky Fingers, but still a damn good album. "Midnight Rambler" is probably my favorite, but there's really not a bad song on the set.
I recognize the stellar quality of this album and gladly assign 4 stars!!!
Pretty good overall. A few classic songs, even if they’ve been played to death. It took hearing my mom sing Gimme Shelter while playing that Rock Band video game to realize the words “rape” and “murder” are said over and over again in that song.
Outstanding
Classic Rolling Stones
At first I thought these guys were just a bunch of himbos incapable of writing a song of any substance - and that’s still the case. But they aren’t trying to present themselves as anything other than the rock n roll fuckboys that they are and this was a fun album to get dumb to.
Way better album than Beggars Banquet
The Stones
Good
Not always the biggest fan of the Rolling Stones but this is a good one. The prominent harmonica throughout is a big plus and a legendary opener in Gimme Shelter. 7.5/10 (3.75/5)
Fabulous
You can't always get what you waaaant
Let It Bleed - Rolling Stones Gimme shelter is Such a banger to open on. This song has been everywhere. Every soundtrack, every movie, every sporting event. It’s very Americana. Speaking of, Country Tonk song is good as well. You can hear their influences growing up and being inspired to make this sorta feel good bluegrass music. This went all over and it was a wild ride to hear the rest. I liked it but didn’t love it. You Can’t Always Get What You Want is sorta a meme cause of that House TV show haha but otherwise it feels like a culmination of all their ideas picked from each song of the album at the end Pretty solid record
The best Stones album
So much slide guitar
I enjoyed this album. It felt quite bluesy and sometimes like Bob Dylan, who I like!
Of the four or so Rolling Stones albums I’ve listened to in this project, this has been the best, although I’m still not totally sold. The first and last tracks were the only ones I had heard before, and they were my favorites. “Gimme Shelter” in particular is just an undeniably great classic rock song. 3.5 rounded up (with the .5 pretty much entirely carried by the bookend tracks) Favorite tracks: Gimme Shelter; You Can’t Always Get What You Want
Erinomainen jenkkisoundialbumi, pidän kovasti. Tai siis aika jenkkiähän Rollarit aina on. Country puree.
Nimibiisi ja You Can't Always Get What You Want ovat vähän turhan letkeitä, mutta silti ilmiselviä onnistumisia. Pidän Beggarsin "deep cuteista" enemmän, ja Exilella on runsaammin löydettävää. Silti jokainen Let It Bleedin raidoista on kuulemisen arvoinen - ja Keithin You Got the Silver ansaitsee erityismaininnan, eikö?
Yeah overall it’s a pretty decent album. During this time era, they were doing some Psychedelic music, and than the completely switched up with this album, but any ways this album as a lot of different styles of music that they Incorporated in to making this record.
Starts great and ends great
Really solid album. Bit bluesy!
Always preferred The Beatles to the Stones, but still enjoyed many of the Stone's songs. This album seems like a compilation of those songs I liked. The Stones, correctly so, didn't try to copy the Beatles sound. This independence, and their longevity, has given them the recognition the deserve as one of rock's most influential and recognized bands. 4/5
This is the first time I’ve listened to full Stones albums and I get it now
Very good album for The Rolling Stones. Gimme Shelter is such a great rock song
Fun British honky Tonky bluesey country rock bookended by two great songs (gimme shelter and you can’t always get what you want)
Great!
Nice album but kinda what nothing that really suprises me
Nice
Yeah, gotta confess I quite liked this one.
Great album
Rockin'. Excellent Rolling Stones vibes. I'll listen to this one again. The record is just about perfect for what it's trying to do, but it's so straight forward that it doesn't really excite me. Four stars.
First time listening to the whole album, not a big fan of the country sounding songs, but redeemed by the hits.
Never been a big Stones fan but I can appreciate the classic songs on this album
A few songs that you recognize but overall not an exceptional album.
the last good stones album, for a myriad of reasons the two biggest being the death of an icon (jones) and the death of their muse (beatles)
This was excellent. Probably the only album by the stones that I’d gladly throw on to listen to. Magical opening.
This was pretty good. I liked the outro song "You can't always get what you want" the most. I'm surprised The Rolling Stones have largely flown under my radar because I definitely have a general appreciation for their style.
To my slight embarrassment, my introduction to this album was the 2007 video game "Rock Band", which included the opening track "Gimme Shelter" as a playable song. Even then, I played that song over and over, struck by the blend of psychedelic, blues rock, and soul. Glad to finally hear the whole album and learn that the good vibes continue through the whole record. Stand out tracks include "Gimme Shelter", "Love In Vain", "Let It Bleed", "Midnight Rambler", and "Monkey Man".
I see why these guys were pretty popular.
Classic, feel good album. <3
You Can’t Always Get What You Want makes this album great for me!
my review got deleted…solid honky-Tonkin country blues from the Stones. Solidnkeith Richards playing throughout. An album thay hits opposites - fun and serious, tight and loose, precise and sloppy, rockin and quiet.
Stones at their best
No wonder I love this album, it is sandwiched in between Beggar’s Banquet and Exile. I really dig this phase on the timeline of the Stones. Many stand outs on this, most notably for me: Monkey Man, Let it Bleed, Midnight Rambler, and the legendary opener Gimme Shelter. Interesting the timing connected to founding member Brian Jones’s death. Also another reminder of something that has gotten somewhat lost in music over time, album cover art. Interesting side note: One of my favorite renditions of Gimme Shelter is with U2 performing the music live at Rock HOF show 2009, and Fergie knocking it out of the park standing toe to toe with Mick. (…and sexy AF doing it too…) 4.25/5
Solid album that starts and ends with a couple timeless songs. I felt like a few songs in the middle were written in a couple minutes, which is perhaps the case and I guess could be a positive for a band that can jam like that. Fun fact, Richard’s supposedly came up with the album name as a play on the Beatles Let It Be, highlighting the more aggressive style of the stones. Going 3.75 rounded up. I liked Exile a little better.
She said, "My breasts, they will always be open Baby, you can rest your weary head right on me And there will always be a space in my parking lot When you need a little coke and sympathy" Yeah, we all need someone we can dream on And if you want it, baby, well, you can dream on me Yeah, we all need someone we can cream on Yeah, and if you want to, well, you can cream on me No notes. 4.25/5
Classic stones
3 of the greatest rock tracks ever written but otherwise mediocre.
Stones, strong as always :)
Fuck this album was good! It came along at a perfect time in my week. I love the Rolling Stones (greatest hits kind of fan) and really enjoyed listening to this all day. So what if these white male dudes want to pretend to play honky tonk blues - it’s fucking awesome!! Loved it
I enjoyed most of the tracks - nice bluesy sounds, a few I could skip next time around but I listened through the album a few times which is usually a good sign. I’d say I’m more of a greatest hits fan when it comes to the stones - but still pretty good for some horny ol’ rock. I learnt today that we all need someone to cream on - who knew?! Fave track: Gimmie Shelter
Classics are classics. The others aren’t and that’s ok.
Lots of recognizable hits and some different musical types than I was expecting. Definitely very catchy at times!
While I wouldn't want to eat that cake, I'll definitely listen to this again.
Very good
honestly want to give The Rolling Stones credit for being so brave as to open and close this album with the two platonic ideals of rock songs and then put a bunch of nonsense filler in the middle
Brilliant, fun album
Gimme Shelter is such a great opening track, and one of my favourite Stones tracks for sure. I think they could have left Country Honk off this one, and I'm not overly fond of You Can't Always Get What You Want... luckily the rest of the record is really cookin' and feels great.
4/5
I will never be able to separate this from 1,000 Vietnam movies. 4/5
I like the parts where they strayed from purely blues songs a lot, if the whole album was like that it would be a 5.
"Gimme Shelter" is fantastic! That's the first thing I'll say about this album. The other songs are great but not on the same level as the aforementioned song. Before listening to this album, I had only heard a few songs of the Stones. Give it chance and I think you'll like it.
The opening track might be my favorite Stones song. Love this stuff.
Great album. I'm not even a huge Stones fan, but this is a really easy album to get into.
Another great and undeniable classic. Hell of an opening to an album. There are some real bangers on here, but a few songs don't do much for me... "Love In Vain" and "You Got the Silver" are solid attempts at authentic blues/americana, but not particularly good. Had "Honky Tonk Women" been on the album, it would be a monster. One can't slag off this album, though I kind of want to. 4.4
Classic
Lots of classics on this one
It's got bangers yeah.
didn't realize how many classics there were on this album
It was so enjoyable its crazy!! En verdad nunca creí disfrutar tanto de un álbum de The Rolling Stones. Ahora no soy poser, puedo comprarme la camiseta fea esa de la boca sacando la lengua. 8/10.
Classic Stones. Starts strong, ends strong.
The Rolling Stones are the Rolling Stones. I don't know that they are my jam, but I appreciate them for what they are. That being said, Gimme Shelter is one of the greatest rock songs ever so I'll give this album an extra star for that song.
Loved this album! Never expected to like The Rolling Stones if I'm honest, so this was a nice surprise.
Mmm … cake …
.
Its the stones. Its gonna be good. This is the second stones album ive listened to on this list and while good, I think I enjoyed let it bleed more as an album overall. That said, gimme shelter has to be one of the greatest songs of all time and for that alone its gotta be 4 stars.
Erg goed, lekker jazzy. Ik jkende een hoop. Zeker niet allles
Fabulous
great opening and closing songs.. didnt care for much in the middle.. deffinatly felt the blues influence
3.7
Once again the Rolling Stones, the second album on this trip of these 1001 albums. Aftermath is in my opinion better but also this one is one of the great albums of the band!
Solid one, they have the mojo
One of my fav. Stones albums. Gimme shelter, let it bleed, midnight rambler, monkey man and of course you cant alwsys get what you want. Awesome album!
Classic
Yeah. It’s the Stones. Good stuff. The hits are great. The deep tracks are fine. Tracks added to Spotify: 0
Not my favourite Stones album - tracks 2-5 I found pretty irritating. However it picked up again with Midnight Rambler and I was on their side again by the end. Hard to rate as I don't think I'd return to the whole thing, but probably deserves 4* for Merry Clayton's vocals alone.
4/5. I obviously love gimme shelter and you can't always get you want. Monkey man is great as well. The other tracks I was a bit less enthused by, but they're still a nice vibe.
3.5
I dig the blues-y Stones.
It opens with Gimme Shelter so it's off to a flying start, bookended by You can't always get what you want which is also great. But the rest doesn't really do it for me. Not my favourite album of theirs, but I'll still give it a 4.
I liked it! Opener was a definite highlight and an awesome track to start an album with. Rest of the album wasn't quite so good, but I still enjoyed it!
S-Tier: Gimme Shelter, You Can’t Always Get What You Want A-Tier: The rest
Klassieke Stones sound, 2 wereldhits, en 1 ontzettende misser. Bij elkaar 4 sterren.
Definitely a classic Stones album. "Gimme Shelter" and "You Can't Always Get What You Want" start and end this album. Some of the lyrics did not age well but here the Stones set themselves up as the Beatles opposite
Fuckin love this era of the Stones.
Rock'n'Roll Classic
4/5. Great album. The hits are timeless. It's the stuff in between the hits that drag it down a bit.
I didn’t much care for early Rolling Stones. I found it uninspiring. I don’t much care for later Rolling Stones as it just feels faux and like a parody of themselves. But this period - late 60s - I am very fond of them. My folks were Rolling Stones fans at this point and took me to see them in Hyde Park in 1969. So they kind of wandered into my subconscious and stayed. I also think the best two Rolling Stones songs are on this album. ‘You can’t always get what you want’ and ‘Gimme shelter’ are no less than wonderful. This also sent me into a rabbit hole of looking up covers of ‘gimme shelter’. I used to listen to the Sisters Of Mercy version over and over and this time I discovered some great and not so great versions. But the song itself is perfect. The album in toto is great but I would choose to listen to those two songs on repeat and not bother with the rest.
Stones at their best - Lots of country and rock and roll without going too far into the cheese.
Is it possible that this album is 60+ year old? Wow. Here you see how heavily the Stones were influenced by American blues.
Classique !
Great album!! Gimme Shelter is a banger for the ages, and Love in Vain is as sad as the title and a great segue into the rest of the bluesy tones of Let It Bleed. Monkey Man and Midnight Rambler feels experimental, and the choice to finish with You Cant Always Get What You Want feels both internal for the band and external for the audience. What a record.
There are some classic/amazing tracks, and there are some that did not age well. It's awkward listening to British dudes pretend to be from Appalachia.
Prime stones.
Classic start and ending of the record, with a blues/country middle. Clear standout songs are the obvious Gimme Shelter and You Can't Always Get What You Want, but I liked the album named track Let It Bleed quite as well. It's a very good album that's not hard to listen to start to finish. It only doesn't get a 5, since there's stronger complete albums our there. This one, while great, feels two tiered.
Some really good iconic songs and some not so good.
Love the Stones, but this is not their best album. You Can't Always Get What You Want has always been a favorite.
Enjoyed this album - not one i would choose but really liked listening to it!
Four stars for two legendary songs (Both "Gimme Shelter" and "You Can't Always Get What You Want" are iconic and wonderful) but on a personal level, I always struggle to get on board with and/or keep my attention on Rolling Stones album cuts.
This ignites memories for me, when I discovered great music through movies. A lot of these songs were part of that journey.
Listening to this album in my bunk bed I do like some of these tunes, I’ve never really gotten into Rolling Stones so it is hard for me to rate it. Like yeah gimme shelter is a 5/5 song, and the last one. I need to listen to it more but based on the tunes I really like I’m going high
Solid album. One of their better ones that I know of.
Vital to 70s rock
BL: very much aware of this album but admittedly I’ve never listened to it. Which is a massive hole in my repertoire considering my love for the stones. I’m sure I’ll greatly enjoy this one but I’ll have to see. AL: this album didn’t necessarily strike me as much as I expected it to. It feels rather formulaic. Then you have to remember that this is the formula that all subsequent albums would follow. The mid point of the album has a bit of a dip but overall quality stays consistent and it’s a good listen. The slide guitar and mixing is especially amazing for a recording of the time. Will definitely need to relisten. FT: “Love In Vain”, “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” 4/5
Not my pinnacle RS, but you can’t deny this album rocks. Blues and southern US sound are of course not their brand, but the homage absolutely stuck a chord with US fans. This stuff has great composition and some catchy tunes. Gimme Shelter is obviously top 3 RS all time.
es el mejor, de momento, no es mi estilo pero no esta mal
Better then i thought it would be
Gimme Shelter and You Can't Always Get What You Want are classic songs to come from a complete Stones album. Thoroughly contemplative of the era, this album is reminiscent of a different time yet oddly familiar.
A transitionary album for the stones. Not as coherent as exile as it seems big hit singles were put at beginning and end album with more blues rock folk in the middle.
Good listen. Loved how effortlessly the album flowed.
Gimme Shelter might be my favorite Rolling Stones song, and then ending on You Can’t Always Get What You Want, with that huge choral buildup, is fantastic.
pretty good i think
Great listen.
Classic. Very enjoyable.
Another album full of classics.
A classic Stones album and maybe my favorite of theirs. They sound like they’re having a lot of fun with this.
