Reviews (page 3 of 8)
Scream, Dracula, Scream by Rocket From The Crypt is an adrenaline-fueled and exhilarating album that epitomizes the band's raucous energy. Released in 1995, it solidifies their status as a powerhouse in the punk rock scene. Tracks like "Born in '69" and "On a Rope" showcase the band's dynamic and infectious sound, with tight musicianship and Jason Crane's charismatic vocals. The album's production is raw and gritty, perfectly capturing the band's electrifying live presence. While some tracks may not reach the same heights as the standouts, Scream, Dracula, Scream remains a thrilling and wild ride from start to finish. It's a must-listen for fans of punk rock and a testament to Rocket From The Crypt's enduring appeal.
I liked this!
Rock con ciertos toques punk, divertido de escuchar, intenso, guitarrero y con contundencia
Rocket from the Crypt are a punk band I've not heard of until this record appeared as the daily selection on 1001 Albums. There is more emphasis on melody in these tracks than what you get from your typical punk band. The songs are much too bright to be called "grunge" - I'm guessing lots of 80s rock band influences. "Young Livers", "Used", "Ball Lightning", and "Misbeaten" are like 90s punk versions of The Clash and Elvis Costello tunes. The lead singer even sounds a bit like EC.
Another album I’m shocked that I enjoy so much. The hooks are just so catchy and earwormy that it makes up for it not being one of my favorite genres. 7/10
Favorite Songs: Used and Heater Hands. I really enjoyed this album, but it was just basic punk/rock. Why is it necessary to hear? Heck, even Wikipedia barely had an info on it.
Great punk album!
On the one hand, it's a bit one note, but on the other hand, it's a fun note, but on the other other hand, it goes on for over an hour, which is perhaps a bit much of that note. Shorter doses would be preferable. I saw RFTC at a Glastonbury, late 90s, and they convinced the more chemically altered members of the crowd to treat the hellish mud quagmire in front of the stage as a slip n' slide, which was fun enough to secure them a 4 in this here review! Fave track - "On A Rope", obvs...
Groupe que je ne connaissais pas du tout; belle énergie et dérision qui me plaisent.
Álbum de punk rock clássico, contem algumas musicas boas e no geral me surpreendeu.
Never heard this lot before. There’s a photo on their wiki page in which they appear to have copied The Hives’ dress-code. I loved The Hives. This band’s sound is not as frenetic as The Hives but it’s very classy, all the same. Blown away when I read that this was recorded at Gold Star Studios, where Spector’s wall-of-sound was built. The production is great, and there’s not a song here that I don’t enjoy. It seems to be classified as punk, but it just sounds like great rock’n’roll to me.
Tight, tight album
Swami John Reis hear my prayer: "Please send me a daily listen that continues to rock despite its years." Raise your hand if you're a Drive Like Jehu, Hot Snakes or Night Marchers fan. John Reis has blessed us with many great records through a variety of groups. Rocket From the Crypt has always been the "most fun" of them. Loud guitar, upbeat tempos, and cheeky lyrics — this album delivers on that most of the time. It's not 5 stars good. I've got to save those stars for Hot Snakes and Drive Like Jehu records.
This is delightful. I’m thoroughly charmed. I guess they’re a punk band (sometimes) but they’ve got a Stonesy rock swagger (especially when the horns come in). They’re very comfortable reaching into every corner of rock for sounds that fit the song at hand. I was consistently surprised by the instrumentation and tonal shifts. I love the riff on “On a Rope.” I think I’ve heard it before somewhere but man it rocks. Big, bold, brash and fun. Occasionally the vocals were a little grating but I still respect the swagger of this band.
Upbeat punk rock. Worth another visit.
The lightest of fours. An enjoyable poppy punk outing, first few tracks are especially good.
I don't know, I really enjoyed this. The opening track was a bit of a turn-off at first but, as I started to listen, I started to really dig the vibe of this whole album. It's irreverent and energetic (maybe even frenetic) but there's still a lot of skill and subtlety hidden inside these tracks. The engineering and mixing, in particular, are pretty spectacular. Like I said, I don't know. It was just fun.
This album has me with a smile on my face, especially with the ska sections. I don't love how the lead singer sounds, but the grooves are punk and chunky.
Having never heard of this band or album, I was pleasantly surprised! 90s punk with quality songwriting and great horns throughout. Bit too long for this type of sound, but fans of Fucked Up or Titus Andronicus should absolutely check this out
Nice ride down memory lane. I remember when this album came out. It was like a punk version of the Blues Brothers. I absolutely loved the first three tracks, "Middle", "Born in '69", and "On a Rope" (and I still love them today). Unfortunately, after such a great start, everything after sounded quite underwhelming, to be honest. And it's still the case now for me, even though my music tastes have quite broadened since i was a teenager... That being said, I find the average grading of the participants in here extremely harsh. This is no essential listen, obviously, but it's still decent punk rock. So for once, I'm gonna give a 4/5 grade to an album I actually won't include in my own list. Trying to tip the karmic balance a little here, even if this won't change anything to the average grading... Number of albums left to review: 738 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 129 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 65 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): 69 (including this one)
Camp
Härlig rock! Lite punkigt, lite rock'n'roll, lite blåsorkester. Påminner om Foo Fighters (eller tvärtom med tanke på åldern) - framför allt Ball Lightning.
It Really suprised me this album… I had never heard about this band..
Punk 'n roll!
This was just a FUN album that i could really easily get into and carries the energy through the whole thing. Little sinister, little horny, little vibey. 4/5
I didn't recognise the name of this band or album, but when "ONAROPE, ONAROPE, GOT ME HANGIN ONAROPE", kicked in I remembered it instantly! I don't think I knew any of the other songs so was excited to check the rest of the album out. I enjoyed it overall, especially the energy and the brass section, which was great throughout. At first I thought the vocals were a bit too pirate-y, but they grew on me. I do think it feels like it loses steam towards the end, so perhaps 50 mins is a bit too long for a punk album. Maybe the last few songs will grow on me too though. Overall, a nice surprise which I see myself listening to again. It's interesting reading through some of the negative reviews on the more unusual albums on the list. It's seems like people were expecting this to be 1001 CLASSIC ROCK Albums to Hear Before You Die. Broaden your horizons, people! Albums like this are why I'm here. 8/10
I wasn't sure what to expect here, but I loved this. Really strong energy, driving, catchy songs with just the right amount of chaos. The horns were a nice touch. Overall, this reminded me a little of my favorite band, The Replacements. Will definitely listen again and check out more of their stuff. 4 stars.
Whoa I really like this! The lead singer sounds so familiar. Does he sound like the NOFX singer a bit?
Good stuff
Links 90s hardcore punk to the heartland punk of the aughts (Gaslight Anthem, The Hold Steady, etc.) Maybe it's the horns?
Dug it!!! So cool, the sound is right up my alley (horns, ska influence)
Pretty good! Fun 90's punk.
The drums on this album are crazy This is definitely one of our better punk albums THE HORNS ON THIS WHAT Enjoying so far Born in '69 is a great song The cover is gross but the music sounds cool The vocals arent great but the instrumentals definitely make up for it 7/10
Very good
CD
Very surprised that I haven’t heard of this band. It’s a little harsh but I like it. Post-punk in the vein of Rancid who I love. I’m a broken record about this (no pun intended) but really missing the half star option as I’d give this a 3.5. Rounding up this time
Honestly not in the mood for this kind of thing much anymore - loud and angry is a young man’s game. Still, this is that being done about as good as it gets. Fast songs, lots of variety, unflagging energy. Surprised I hadn’t heard of this before.
Really dug the guitar and drums on a lot of these tracks
Punk rock noventero. No llega a vinilo.
Ok I don't think I've heard any of this before, but it feels like I have. I like it! Rocks just right. Bit of rockabilly but not so much it turns me off. I would happily listen to a few of these tunes again. 4/5.
Rock. Grunge.
Great energy and really fun melodies, just not catchy enough. Also not a fan of the vocals. I feel like if this album was redone and tightened up, it could be this really cool vampy theatrical piece
J'ai lancé en mode "du punk... Meh", mais finalement c'était bien cool.
Nice discovery here! Steady side A. Connected with most of the songs. Side B is a different story. Made some research on the band and looks like the guys were real characters, hosted raffles during concerts, used gigantic spin wheels on stage to decide set lists, played kids shows… fun stuff I will definitely include some of these songs to my playlists
Pretty interesting and unique album. Like punk rock with real instruments. Talented instrumentals behind shouting lyrics.
Not sure why I enjoyed this as much as I did
Dug it. Very much my kind of sound.
Hmmm. This cover looks like a warning to listeners like me. Although that font draws me in. Dracula and a scorpion? Never mind that. Into the breach! The first two songs were a bit rough. Although the lyric “you only kick half an ass” interests me… Actually found myself enjoying “On A Rope”. Pretty sure I’ve have heard this song before. Really like “Young Livers”. The opening sounds almost festive! Are those bells? Is this a metal ska album? Those are some nice harmonies. What is happening? “Drop Out” is pretty good too. I’m not sure I can sustain the necessary energy for a whole album of this, but I’m liking some of this quite a bit more than I thought. “Used” is my favorite song yet. Throw in a sax and some orchestration and… bells?! This song is pretty great. “Ball Lightning” - ‘you want some cheese with your whine?’ Really liking this song too! Nice backing vocals! So glad to have pressed on in this journey. Enjoying some good 90s guitar work. Ok now we are on “Fat Lip”. I can barely take the verses. But I am liking the chorus. Rocket From Crypt is not making this easy… then again “fat lip learns slow.“ I started to notice some quality percussion in “Suit City” but it and “Heater Hands” feel like too much work for me to listen to. “Misbeaten” is a little more melodic and adds a horn section… and the backing vocals at the end are a pleasant surprise! Love the ending! “Come See, Come Saw”... Horn forward with a pun title? Guitar solo at the end? Temptations-style backing vocals?! Yes, please! This might be my favorite track. “Salt Future” takes it down a notch. A song about Salt Lake? Well it probably won’t be embraced as the city’s unofficial song but there are those harmonies again. “Burn Alive” ends with a high production value song that I warmed up to as it progressed. Listened to this three times now and, while there’s three or four tracks I’ll likely keep skipping, I’ve added this to my library and will be listening to this again. I did not expect this to be the case at all…There’s variety, cleverness and quality musicianship throughout the album. A genuine surprise to me!
Great punk music after the 80s is tough to come by, but this is great punk music. They’re using horns without skewing into ska, which is impressive in and of itself. Definitely an album and a band I will revisit. Atom Willard’s drums are a highlight, but he’s one of my favorite players so I may be a little biased here.
Love being exposed to more punk
Soft 4 stars. Had low expectations for an album with a scorpion on the cover, but was not disappointed.
Never heard of them, but this album was great! Exactly my type of rock. Dips a bit in quality by the second half, could have been 10 minutes shorter given the genre, but I really did enjoy it!
Surprised by this album, really enjoyed it.
New to me - and loving it.
Punky and melodic, rancid vibes
A good punk album Raucous yet palatable, would listen again
lowkey really liked this one, i was vibing. 8/10
Really enjoyable, not sure why i never got into these guys. Like a nice mix of Rancid, Less Than Jake, and indie rock.
Love it, raw punk rock n roll!
Great punk. Better than most of Nirvana's catalog.
Took some time to warm up to, not the best start to an album, almost threw me up. But as it went through it became more enjoyable.
Really liked On a Rope. A very repetitive song but not long enough for it to be a problem haha.
I got such hyped with this. That's how I imagine classic rock music. Definitely I will listen it again. However I don't think it's something special for 5.
This one brings me back! The title got my attention and I bought this CD (remember those?!) right off the rack when it was first released - thought it was going to be kind of hardcore punk, but was closer to the pop/ska band Madness than the Sex Pistols. Standout track is “On a Rope”, but I like the rest of the album too. Good for an upbeat party, or easy feel good listening. Cool artwork.
never heard of them but surprisingly liked them for this style of music
Rock and roll is coooool
pleasant surprise, did not know these guys
Dont care much for his voice, but the music was actually really solid. Favorite tracks: “Young Livers,” “Fat Lip,” and “Salt Future”
Honestly a pretty fun punk album for me.
Good punk rock (maybe pop-punk?). It's so whiny that if they made it today you'd be certain it was ironic, but in the 90's, who could really tell? I wasn't sure about this album the first time around but sat on it for a while and gave it another spin and felt a bit better about it second time. I give it 4/5, but only barely, it's right on the edge of being a 3.
Nicee
I never gave this a shot because I hated how their name so clearly aped Rocket from the Tombs. But it’s nice solid well crafted mid-90’s alt rock. Crunchy and tasty.
REALLY dig this album. Will give this another spin for sure.
Enjoyed it, no songs I initially recognised but it was a nice change of pace
More fun than I was expecting, a bit of ska in there. I didn’t realise they did On a Rope.
Workout
Interesting album, enjoyed the energy
Eh. Liked a few songs, mostly found it meh
This is a fine piece of 90s hardcore punk from a fine example of a band typical to the San Diego scene of the time. One of the more interesting things I noticed is how ahead of its time the album cover is: it really reminds me of a late 2000s post-hardcore album cover rather than something out of the mid 90s. Musically it's acceptable enough as an amped-up walkthrough of the classic hardcore punk beats. There's a little more variety than I would have expected originally given the genre, though it comes at the cost of consistency - this band does the hardcore punk thing way better than most of the other styles they try, which is mostly straightforward alt rock. I suppose that if the San Diego punk scene is an absolute must to include on a list of seminal albums, this would be a pretty good example of it. In terms of hardcore punk as a whole genre though, there is better out there, but few that seem so...oddly friendly as this one. There's just something so inviting and jovial about this album where so many other bands of this time seemed so utterly miserable. I guess that's what sets it apart: it's hardcore punk that doesn't compromise on energy or intensity while still being inviting enough to entertain the uninitiated who listen to it. Key Tracks: On a Rope, Ball Lightning, Come See Come Saw, Burnt Alive
unnecessarily scary album cover lol but good energy!
Good punk record from a band I had never heard of prior. The first three tracks are pretty great, but the other song are never quite as high. I enjoyed it for what it set out to do, but I don't see myself getting attached to much of the material on here. Also a it repetitive as it continues on. Very odd choice for this list in my opinion, but worth a listen for any fan of punk music.
Another kinda mid album, I'd consider it more revolutionary if it didn't sound exactly like The Saints who I got two days ago.
Not a band collection of tunes and was a reasonably good listen
It obviously doesn’t deserve to be on this list but I’m not gonna pretend I didn’t have fun listening to it.
Not a fan of the vocalist at first listen. I like the music and I can hear how they'd be interesting and energetic live but as of the first song - not my thing.
Gefällt mir. Ich klinge da jetzt vielleicht wie der oberste Hipster, aber so richtig feiere ich das, was John Reis noch an anderen Bands hatte (Hot Snakes, Drive Like Jehu).
5/10… punk / garage revival / *1995
Подозрительно быстро утомляет, несмотря на бодрый звук
I had fun, was hoping there'd be more of a horror theme though
Ugh.... Pero luego se alivianó machin! Buen disco para echar desastre
I liked this
Another fine but unremarkable album. I'm not sure why this is on the list. I can't see anything new that it does with punk. Weren't trumpets used for a ska style firmly established by the mid 90s? Thankfully the last couple songs were my favourite so that may help leave Highlights: Salt Future, Burnt Alive
was so intrigued by this album title. quite enjoyed but could only listen to it quietly today, will have to relisten. but good
A very high energy album. If you heard one or two of these songs you’d like it, hearing all of them is rougher. That being said, I did enjoy it. The instrumentation and horns were a great touch. It turned it from a generic 90’s punk thing into something more interesting. I don’t know that it belongs on this list, it’s decent, but it’s not exactly a life changing album.
meh ok
I had absolutely no hope for this being good when it came up, but it was surprisingly enjoyable! Who knew the guy from Drive Like Jehu had a straight down the line punk outfit, which was seemingly more successful??? The world is full of revelations.
Enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
Brass was interesting, but the rest of the album isn't.
Americans doing punk in the 90's, never going to be amazing. To be fair the whole album is lively but it gets samey and the lead singers voice starts to grate.
Could have been a 4 if I’d liked the vocals a little bit more but still really enjoyed the album
Had I first heard this when released in 1995, it likely would have had appeal, and I’d be reviewing it now with the benefit of 30 years’ worth of fond nostalgia. But I didn’t, so it’s wholly new. So it’s just ok.
Pretty fun 90's punk album for the most part. Leans ska at certain points and just has an overall high energy with quick bursts. Tries to do too much at other points, however.
This didn't come across to me as a punk album. It seemed more like a generic mid 1970s mainstream mediocre rock album. Not bad but not great either.
New to me; fun, but nothing really stood out to me on it
Andrew wk stole this shit
Saw this band in HMV when they released 'On a rope' and played the song ad neaseum at the time. It's not quite as good as I'd remembered it and the same goes for the album, it's ok but not one I'll return to
I really got into the groove of the last track but otherwise was ok
This was actually mildly interesting and had some energy. I was skeptical at first but was a decent listen. 3.5 but three side.
Yeah alright, not too bad.
p757. 1995. 3 stars. Decent 90s pop/punk with early Costello vibes. If this had been released in 1978, they'd have been legends. As it is, it sounds like a well honed tribute band.
It was okay. There was much better bands during this time period not on this list however. Singer sounds like the guy from Less Than Jake, who are better than these guys.
Good energy, really average music. I can't say I hated it, but it was also just SO generic. The backing did very little of interest besides occasionally bring some brass instruments in that gave it an ever so slightly ska vibe. The vocals were OK, but not really my cup of tea, they have a really irritating almost smarmy quality to them that is just grating, especially over the course of a whole album with zero variety. Would probably enjoy listening to the odd track from this again, but definitely not the whole album in one sitting... it became hard work after a while.
This has the occasional super cool idea. Fat lip having a thunder effect at the end of a guitar solo gave me chills. Just think it's mostly super generic tho... above average 3
1001 albums to hear before you go to the crypt 107# Was this necessary to be on the list? i doubt it. Nothing excellent in particular, or innovative for the year i think.. It's full of energy and overall a nice punky alternative rock disc
It's okay. Nothing really jumped out too much to me. I enjoyed the sound and I know the one song, but otherwise, I don't I'll come back. I'd much rather listen to Social Distortion.
Punk rock, hardcore punk.
fine
I think I was listening to this song with the wrong weather - not ideal for stormy rainy days, but overall decent as a rock album. Good soundtrack to Get Shit Done to.
This is like three degrees removed from something I would like. Not bratty enough, not ska enough, not silly enough.
Overall: 5/10 It's fine. I got a lot of enjoyment out of the energy and the horn sections but it's nothing really that special. Animals by Pink Floyd isn't on the list but sure, generic pop punk is essential I guess. Fav Song: On a Rope
Fyrri part plötunnar hugsaði ég að gefa þeim fjórar stjörnur. Fílaði hann mikið og fannst skemmtilegur. Seinni hlutinn missti aðeins dampinn og datt þá niður í þrjár stjörnur. Hef aldrei heyrt um þessa hljómsveit þrátt fyrir geggjað nafn.

After the first couple of songs, I thought I would be giving this two stars tops. But as it continued, there were some songs that I actually liked. Anyway, this is a three star album for me…probably won’t bother to listen to it again, though.
Middle 3 Born in '69 3.4 On a Rope 3.7 Young Livers 3.5 Drop Out 3.3 Used 3.4 Ball Lightning 3.7 Fat Lip 3.3 Suit City 3.5 Heater Hands 4 Misbeaten 3.2 Come See, Come Saw 3.6 Salt Future 3.4 Burnt Alive 3.5 Score: 3.464285714
Pretty decent album. I seriously never heard of them before. Probably buried in the mid-90s hop hop stuff only.
rock anos 2000 ou quase
Not to be confused with Rocket from the Tomb who played with Richard Lloyd of Television fame, and created a lot of confusion with these boys in the early days of the internet. Anyway its just kinda an ok punk album but in the 90s not the 80s.
Є філери, але є і хіти типу On A Rope. Сподобалась наявність духових. Взагалі така музика трохи повертає мене в часи старшої школи, я таке любив.
Not my cup of tea
this album was making “emo” sounds in the 90s while everybody else doing grunge was going for darker sounds they chose to have fun and try a more punky sound, resulting on this. it reminds me of early 00s emo bands so its nice
It's amazing what a good drummer can do for a band. Riding the power of an incredibly tight drummer, the band really comes to life. RFTC makes music in the "punishing riffs repeated to death" genre - and sometimes that works for me, and sometimes it doesn't. Surprisingly, the riffs have to be really good for me to like it! But Rocket found a way to sidestep that - they use the repetitive riffing to add contrast to a really unexpected passage, or a really hooky chorus (see: "On a Rope," in particular). I really enjoy that approach. They surprised me a number of times. One other note - I'm pretty sure one of these British-indie bands from the 2000s ripped off "On a Rope" completely - maybe Arctic Monkeys or the Libertines? Anyways. One of those hoes owes RFTC some money, man. THREE STARS
Better than expected.
Good fun.
- come see, come saw is fun - born in '69 is catchy - i need to stop listening to these while i'm doing other things my memory is awful - rating: 3/5
didn't mind it, could listen again, nothing special though
Fun, energetic 90s ska/punk. If the album could live up to "on a rope" it would be incredible.
It was an alright album, I listened to it while playing Guilty Gear and it was good background music. I wasn't paying attention to it too much tho. I'll give it like 55-60/100
I prefer Hot Snakes/Drive Like Jehu and it’s not even close.
ok energisk rock, men hurtigt glemt
Pretty noisy but well executed
4/8/26. Cool hidden gem for me, can add another to my personal roster of 90s punk bands, similar to Green Day, Rancid, etc. Thought the second half was stronger than the first half, will revisit again.
As soon as I saw the name, album art, and year of the record, I immediately thought this was going to be ass. And of course, when trying to figure out why this thing is on here, the only sentence in the 'Legacy' section on Wikipedia is 'The album was included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die'. On a Rope was pretty alright. It sounds like something you'd hear in the Burnout playlist. Outside of that? Nonoffensive 90's rock that I'd expect to hear on an episode of Bondi Rescue or some other 2000's Australiana TV show. Pretty uninspiring but not all that bad to listen to honestly. It DEFINITELY dragged towards the last 4 songs and I got over it.
This was a fun listen. Never heard of these guys.
There are nice songs, quite nice songs, and a really good sound, for sure. The base here is quite a protagonist, with some nice trumpets and winds. But, even though the music is good, it's nothing impressive. I've not loved it, and, at times, it was a bit of a tiring album. Maybe I'm not currently in the mood for it, but I find this album quite a nice one, with a very clean and great production, but that is not particularly interesting or really enjoyable. So, I'm stuck in the middle this time. In one word I've repeated all over this review, it's nice.
Not for me. Not terrible just not for me.
I think there are enough alright songs here for a 3-star rating, but there's definitely something a little off about its energy. on the second playthrough it hit me how much he sounded like Elvis Costello and I had to go check to make sure it wasn't Costello doing a 90s punk side project.
Okay-ish, surprisingly generic for what it is.
Perfectly cromulent high energy punk. Not a whole lot makes it stand out, but I'd probably never complain if it came on shuffle or something. It tends to blend together a bit honestly, it all pretty much sounds the same and it goes on for 45 minutes. I don't know that I'd sit down and listen to this in full again. It needs a little more room to breathe, some sonic variance. Or maybe just cut a few songs - nothing stood out as bad, but maybe it'd be a better overall experience with a clean 8-10 songs.
Jeg anede ikke at de lavede punk der lød sådan her i 90’erne, jeg troede det var ren ska og Dookie. Hvis den var skåret til og var 30-40 minutter ren energi havde jeg nok givet den 4
Sjovt lyt! Lød meget start-00erne for mig!
Seemed fine and fun to begin with, lost a bit of it's edge towards the end. Sounds like a fun band though!
Actually quite good!
It was one of my favorite 90s albums. That's not saying a lot.
This one isn't for me. I did like the elements of brass on there and some of the melodies. Born in 69 was enjoyable and probably my favorite. But in general for me is too many overlapping loud elements and I find it distracting and disorienting.
This album would've only been worthy a 2, but the brass elevated it big time. It's still not for me, but at least now it's mildly interesting.
Bit of a standard punk. Not bad, not particularly interesting. Maybe I don't care for punk.
There's a reason one of these tunes has ten times as many listens.
Better than Green Day, but still not quite a 4
it's always fun to see an album with the post-hardcore tag, even though this wasn't really my bag. A little too jaunty for my tastes.
<Alan Partridge shrug gif>
Felt like generic rock and didn't really stand out to me in any way. I wasn't previously aware of these guys and would be surprised if they ended up back on my radar again.
Another new discovery for me. High energy, fun pop punk through and through. Sounds like their live shows were ridiculous. No real complaints, but probably not something I’ll listen to frequently.
Kolejny przeciętny album rockowy, który brzmi jak jedna naprawdę długa piosenka. Z tym, że tym razem wokal jest na granicy bycia nieznośnym. Całość się ciągnie, nudzi i nie zachwyca. 5/10.
This album has a lot of good songs that are fun and catchy. I really like the cover with the scorpion it looks really cool. I also like their band name and album name. Rocket from the crypt! Well, shoot, I'm straight rocketing! I think I might revisit this album
This was very listenable but also very unmemorable album. When I played it in the background in the morning it was good but when I put it on hedphones the vocals bothered me.
I have tried several times over several decades to enjoy this album/band. But it just doesn’t hit for me. I appreciate that it is pure rock and roll but kinda generic to me. And I really don’t like the vocals. Would’ve appreciated them buried in the mix a bit more. I think if I saw them live back when that I would have a different opinion.
Listenable.
I really enjoyed this album. It's classic 90's punk with a cool but of ska put in with use of a brass section in some of the tracks. Comparable to a lot of punk classics, just a 90's version of them. The only thing I wish was that there was more variety between tracks. The songs are all of a similar flavor and structure. The catchy lines and unique riffs help break things up, but after a while I was wondering if I was listening to the same song twice. "Burnt Alive" and "Ball Lightening" were my favorite tracks.
Convinced this is secretly Elvis Costello. Vocals are uncanny
I bet they were fun live and On a Rope in particular is a great single, but over the course of an album it gets a bit same-y.
Fun but I don't really mind if I don't ever hear it again
Better than I expected. It kind of reminds me of Jeff Rosenstock but obviously not as good. Scorpion on the album cover is bad ass. Favorite track: Middle
I wanted to like this more, but it sounded a little generic to me. Not terrible by any means, but nothing that I would want to keep listening to.
Some bangers but a bit repetitive
Didn't like this at the start but it kinda grew on me. Not bad
I guessed 2009 and I was a surprising 14 years off, and am I hearing riffs? with distortion? Sure, track 1 sounds like it would be the token "heavy" track on a Tony Hawk game's soundtrack, but when that's the only guitar driven music you've heard in months, it sounds like prime Morbid Angel. As punk goes, this is pretty lame, and hits my ear as butt rock-y X-Games core from 2003. I almost wish I didn't see the genre tag that this got saddled with because it's a half-enjoyable rock album. Kind of off-kilter with a driving rhythm and some quirky song titles. I wouldn't sit down and listen to this again and again, but it creeps past the dread 2.5 for me. Now leave Vlad alone! 3
Rock / Punk. High energy Punk that powers on relentlessly and even throws in some horns. Not awful, not great. Right down the middle. 2.5 out of 5..
This is pretty Okay. The moments where they experimented with surf rock and other genres were the most interesting to me.
Pretty decent sounding punk/ska album from the 90's. That's basically it. The horns don't really kick in til halfway through the album (I picked them up around Ball Lightning) and they do manage to change the feel a bit. Other than that it's kinda unremarkable. Fun enough and got me excited in the beginning but it never really took off.
Slightly punk, slightly grunge, and slightly ska. Moments of interest and moderate enjoyment (like Suit City), but not enough to qualify this as something I had to hear before I died.
Oh look, another obscure punk/rock/ska group from the '90's So Cal. I'm guessing the author of this list didn't realize that this is a niche group that nobody except their fans have heard of or care about. It's a bit of a cultural oddity that a band from San Diego got big (in a relative sense) in the UK and not the US. After it all I was left thinking this group needed to pick a lane: punk or alternative rock. Their songs that move to one side or the other aren't bad, but when they start blending the genres it breaks down. On a Rope was a decent tune.
Akin to the Hives?
Mix between Green Day and the smashing Pumpkins. I didn’t hate but but probably won’t be on my list of must have albums.
Ok
⭐⭐⭐ Standard punkrock. Lätt att tycka om men är det ett album som bör vara med i listan över 1001 album, jag tvekar. Men samtidigt uppskattar jag det och kan inte låta bli att gunga med. Bäst är Born in 69, On a rope, Drop out
High energy, would be good live. One song at a time mixed into a playlist would be great, otherwise its the same thing over and over - hard album to listen to all the way through
People have often wondered if Dracula was in fact Len Houmous. You never see him in daylight and despite his own scent, he hates garlic. 3.4 5/14 Drop Out
This was alright, kind of ska punk. Nothing memorable tho
Odd, but in a way I can get behind.
The Stooges make a party record. There's even horns. It's all tight as a drum and/but ends being a little one dimensional. It's fine. I don't believe that is the adjective they were hoping for. Better in a love setting.
A good album, I liked Young Livers the most.
403/1089 - Energetic but not much substance.
Wow, I did not expect this to be good. Skate to survive!!! See Naren? Rivington type shit. 3.5! .. 3.4
More musical and lyrical than much of the music in this genre.
Surprisingly, I didn't hate this
Better than expected considering the name of the band and the album title and cover!
This is junk punk, especially on the more dumb and aggressively unmusical tracks like 'On a Rope' or 'Suit City,' but it does come into a kind of its own on songs like 'Young Livers' or 'Drop Out,' featuring endearing horns and a lead vocal performance from Speedo that effectively marries Strummer w/ Westerberg. 'Ah, something's wrong with Gertrude / Ah, she don't like the attitude.' Like all proper punks, RFTC tell stories about neighborhood gals and pals, as the Ramones did about Sheena, the Clash about Rudie, & The Replacements about Tommy and his tonsillectomy. But all in all, this is only an average punk record, not a very nineties affair - uniformed by grunge or even The Offspring - and just not nearly as good as what we had gotten 'fore in the late seventies and eighties.
I wish a three didn’t feel so noncommital. This is an album I kind of like (especially the horn section) in a genre I kind of don’t but whether I like it doesn’t feel like the right metric to judge this by? I do think this is interesting. I hear elements of Nine Inch Nails and Sponge in here along with contemporaries like Social Distortion or even The Offspring. It almost sounds like a noisier version of the punk ska bands that were either about to hit big or just had with the horn section going. So it’s weird. Did I like it? kinda but I’m not going to listen to it again. Was it a great list inclusion? I think so, I listened to it actively and got something from it, helped me draw some interesting connections between other bands of its era and its precursors/successors. Call it a three with an asterisk because I did get more from it than just an album I liked well enough to listen to once
jovial punk, mye blås, en del likheter til skandirock, men meh.
Not my jam but not bad
Never heard of these guys, cool name... okay, the intro is pretty good. 61 seconds long. I'm expecting more hardcore punk. But what I get is an album with an identity crisis. Is it hardcore? Is it radio friendly pop punk, or ska, or even glam rock? I don't really know, but these guys can definitely write some hooks. I just wanted it to either lean into the fast, punk riffs that were promised at the very start, or fully embrace the poppy stuff. I do like enough of the songs to give this a passing mark.
I’ve never heard of this before this. I thought it sounded promising from the description but the vocals are a bit harsh, and I really don’t like saxophone/horns in songs. But the last half of the album seemed to be better.
I expected to hate this, but this was genuinely really good. I was tempted to give this a 4 but I need to keep my rankings consistent.
This reminds me so much of Jeff Rosenstock. I'm gonna start calling this "proto-Jeff-Rosenstock"
Truth be told, I went into listening to this album with negative thoughts simply from the titling and branding. I was fully expecting another turd of an album, but I was pleasantly surprised. I don’t gravitate to Punk music, but these guys are musically talented. I heard flashes of Mighty, Mighty, Bosstones in a couple of songs but that may be from the distinct instrument sounds coming though in staccato, the back up singers supporting the melody very well, and the vocals turned to “11”. Overall I was pleased with today’s selection.
90’s Punk Rock ⭐️Come See, Come Saw
Not bad
This one gave me a hit of nostalgia right away. I remember Rocket from the Crypt from the old Vans Off the Wall compilation CDs and from the Tony Hawk Pro Skater soundtrack, so that alone earned some bonus points. That said, nothing on this album really stuck out for me. It’s solid, energetic punk rock, but once it was over, I didn’t feel the urge to go back and replay anything. Still, it was a fun listen overall. Also, side note, we seriously need to start a movement to bring back the Vans Off the Wall albums. Those things were legendary.
Never heard of these guys and based on the name of the band and the album I was expecting to hear some weird Halloween music. Even though I’m not a huge fan of punk, I ended up liking this quite a bit.
I hated the first three songs, but this album took a sharp turn for the better with Young Livers (which sounds like a punk Summertime Blues), and after that had some songs I liked. Best were Young Livers and Drop Out. I need a copy of the actual 1001 book so I can find out why it was important to hear this before I died because it sounds fairly generic to me.. Kickass title, though.
Standard Rock Album, but not particularly catchy or groovy. I'm not sure about the historical importance of this one, but its mid.
This was alright
Very fun, but at a certain point more interesting as a (sorta) transitional missing link between more propulsive or catchy movements of punk. When this thing is 45 minutes long and not particularly varied it sorta lands more in scientifically curious rather than enjoyable. Drop Out is my cut of choice.
Pretty fun, if inessential
Raucous. Not much variety. No idea what it's doing on this list. Quite enjoyed it 😅
A couple of really good and fun punk songs, and a bunch of okay ones
The instrumentation and melodies were really fun and reminded me a lot of Greenday+ska. For that part of the album I would have given it a 4, but the vocals really weren't my taste. It was like Pearl Jam trying to go punk.
Day752 - if i would have heard this in ‘95 i would’ve really liked it. it sounds like it could have been on the empire records soundtrack.
-this was a pretty fun album! got me wanting to move a lil tbh -i am by no means an expert on punk or punk rock, and this is not the best album i’ve heard from this genre. it did blend together a little bit but as i said i had fun and that counts for somethin -Favorites: On A Rope, Drop Out
Good energy throughout, but RTC never quite met the promise that Reis had with Pitchfork to my mind. I am sad I missed them live as you can feel the energy on the album. Over time, though, that does wane. The mixing is pretty key to boosting that energy but is also the biggest achilles heel.
Unremarkable but not unpleasant pop-punk-rock. Like an American 90s Busted.
Surprisingly not bad for bad music, but in a good way
Awesome punk sound, all the instrumentals are head-pounding, jumpy, and loud which just make this punk project sound all the better. Unfortunately I feel like the vocals get drowned out too much by the instruments, they still all make a nice blend of music, it just seems that the dynamics with the vocals don't give enough attention to the lyricism, but man is the music still fun and jumpy.
ได้อยู่ๆ บางทีก็แอบปวดหู55555
Punk, but more melodic/musical than I expected
Another bizarre name/title/sound combination but entertaining regardless.
I liked this better than I thought i would. For the right moment, I would listen again. Rated 3
This is possibly the weirdest one I've gone "why is this on the list" to so far. I mean as an album goes, it's fine. It's about as "yeah this is okay" as is possible to get. It's not bad, or good, or anything other than okay. Which...is why it's so odd that it's included. They're not a no-name britpop indie band who really like church organs or a british 80s new wave band's 5th album on the list. It's literally just the most okay 90s punk rock imaginable. This review is more thought than I had for the entire listening duration.
It goes to 11 from the first second and doesn't let go. Gets a bit tiring after a while.
I got into a lot of the songs on here… I wish they had come up with a better album name but i’m nitpicking. One of the better punk albums so far on the list
On my first listen to this band, my initial thoughts were, we done this in 1977, but as I voyaged further into the album, I quite liked the Rock n roll style, “on a rope” I put up on UT, lead singer reminds me a bit of Joe Strummer…….looking that is😂
Well, another one of these bands of which I was completely unaware, not bad though.
This is very "garage band". I think is nice, even though it's not my kind of music. It feels accurate to the 90s.
Nothing poor, nothing great.
I must admit that I liked this more than I thought I would. I've never heard of them, but there are some artsy twists in this punk stuff that I liked.
Meh
This was fun. Had never heard of them
I didn't think it was bad but I do think there were better choices for mid-90s punk-ish albums for this list.
It’s a fun album. Upbeat, and with a punky energy. I quite like the shifts in tempo that occasionally occur, and the instrumentation is good in general. I always like brass, and this has that ska energy in there. Generally it’s just a pretty solid, fun time.
Haven’t heard this one for decades. I remember dancing s as had dinging along to “On A Rope” around the indie and rock clubs so well. Quite liked listening to this album again after so long, but it’s not one that will work its way back on to my playlists anytime soon… well, apart from “On A Rope” which was already on my 90’s club playlist anyway!
Pretty good, unique punk music. Kinda got a Sleater-Kinney/Elvis Costello thing going if they were a little more hardcore punk. Some horns/ska stuff going on as well. Will I go back to it, probably not, but it was an enjoyable listen.
Great band name. Cool album name and decent cover art. The music though, was fine. Not special. There are other 90s rock albums that should have made the list over this.
This albums kind of rips. The horns were an especially pleasant surprise. Wears out its welcome just a bit toward the end, but it is one I’ll likely revisit.
Kind of mad the main dude was doing Drive Like Jehu around the same time. They are like the polar opposite ends of the 90s punk rock spectrum. This does wear a bit as it goes on.
Solid Punk Rock
I think this album might’ve had the largest discrepancy between skill expressed and my enjoyment of it. It largely sounds the same and it got me moved.
RFTC are better on 'live from camp x Ray' for me which has more ska and rockabilly. But this is still a decent blast of punk rock n roll 90's style.
Some of the tracks are fantastic, while others are verg strange. Overall it balances itself out
This seems extremely okay. Not terrible, but not particularly good either
Wasn't especially enchanted by this one - it's easily outdone by other albums in any genre it could reasonably claim to be, which is kind of wild considering the vocalist & guitarist is John Reis from Drive Like Jehu, a band I absolutely love. We'll call this one a low 6/10, brought out of the 5/10 range by the admittedly still quite cool guitar work in parts.
I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either. Some parts had me rocking out, and then by the end I was just waiting for it to be over. I think it just barely makes the 3 on account of being generally good and high energy, although I don't see myself returning to it. Standout: Drop Out
Honestly I was expecting to question the inclusion on this list, which I still kind of do. It is really well done for the style of music, and the additional touches of orchestration really work well. I didn't find anything that I loved and probably won't revisit. But overall it was a good listen.
ok. I assumed it would be some 50's band but not so much. Fairly straight forward Rock n roll.
Yeah, these guys seem like the type to reunite for the first time in 6 years on Yo Gabba Gabba. You guys remember Yo Gabba Gabba? I only kind of do. I need to stop now before I go on a big tangent à la my Robots (2005) tangent in that Tom Waits review. This album's good. I wouldn't call it great, and I certainly wouldn't call it a must-listen but it's definitely good. I mean, it's not the worst punk album I've heard. Not the best either, but far from the worst. The vocals aren't my favorite, but they work decently enough for the style. I like the horns. They're not too overbearing. It kinda takes punk back to the ska-influenced days of bands like the Clash. I like that. The writing seems kinda vague, but not bad in any sense that I could gather. This album's pretty much a jack of all trades, master of none situation. It does everything well, but nothing is done masterfully. It's a solidly enjoyable, albeit not very innovative, 90s punk record. I like it. High 3/5.
lowk found a song or 2 off this. not bad
That was kinda fun.. Not sure it belongs on the list. But I enjoyed it.
A fun, raucous album that's a cross between punk and garage. Had never heard these guys before so this was a nice introduction. Really liked the use of horns and the melodic sensibility throughout. Still, it went in and out without leaving much of an impression. They would have been fun to see live.
Never heard of these guys before. Lyrically its not very good (want some cheese with your whine) but I liked it fine otherwise. Maybe a bit derivative and unremarkable but I like the energy and you can hear the influences of some great punk bands on here. Then, in typical 90s fashion, they threw in the ska-style horns, always down for some tastefully placed horns. Solid enough stuff
Like this - never listened back in the day. Forward rock.
Direct descendent of Elvis Costello and the clear evolutionary bridge beween him and 2000s pop punk. The ska influence here feels very SoCal. This was definitely a familiar sound given I was born and raised in San Diego. It's got a little spikier, a little grungier texture than what I'd total identify as SD DNA, though. There's definitely some 50s doo-wop and surf rock in here which I like. The vocalist sounds very earnest at times in a way that comes off as a bit trying, a little forced. Did I like it? I would happily listen to some of these songs in a playlist of similar stuff. But I wouldn't seek this album out, really.
Good
Who? Punk Rock which is more Rock than Punk. Nothing special.
Bra fart!
So that's where the on a rope song comes from. They used to play that a lot in clubs. It was a shame they didn't use any of those clever dual vocals to create interesting parts in the other tracks. It wasn't quite rock and it wasn't quite punk. I enjoyed the sound, it reminded me of a couple of Graham Coxon solo albums which I love but the parts weren't as memorable for me. I can't quite fathom how they got that sound from a 4-track recorder, but regardless well done them. Unfortunately as unique as on a rope is, the rest wasn't and it felt as it went on it possibly got slightly less good. Shame.
Some solid rock. I really don’t see why this is on here though. Present-day they hardly have 35K listeners on spotify
Thought I was going to have to repeat my negative feelings about yet another US punk rock album. But I have to eat my words. This one wasn’t bad at all. The day was saved by some really good guitar work and memorable riffs. Good sound production as well. Didn’t fall into the trap, like a lot of punk bands, in keeping it real and producing a tinny sound as if recorded on a cassette tape in the lead singer’s bedroom. Wrote that last sentence before I read the wiki entry which gives over a whole lengthy paragraph about how the splendid audio was produced. So embarking onto the 1001 journey and critically listening to different albums every day really does help in honing your listening skills. 3/5 10/12/15
These guys seem to take themselves pretty seriously, as dudes in this scene seem wont to do. More musicianship and less soul than I was expecting.
Meh
I'd never heard of these guys before I was assigned this album, but it turned out to be some pretty good 90s-style punk. Fun jams that no doubt would be great to listen to and sing along with live. The album's maybe a little meandering; I don't think it really has 14 songs worth of ideas, but even at its worst it's just a little boring rather than outright bad. The highs make up for those moments though. Favourite tracks: On a Rope, Ball Lightning, Fat Lip
Listening to Aerosmith yesterday almost made me lose faith in the list. I hope I won't have to listen to them for the time being. Anyway, this album crushes Aerosmith's discography. I'm instantly in love with "On a Rope", the best song on "Scream, Dracula, Scream". The album isn't anything special, to be honest. 3 stars for "Scream, Dracula, Scream".
I like RFtC and Drive Like Jehu, but this is just okay 90's radio rock.
Everyone should have a person or access to a person who just knows everything about every band. Never heard of Rocket From The Crypt? Just ask your connect and you'll receive a large paragraph breaking down their significance and connections.
What genre is this? It's headache music. Makes me feel like my mum & dad. Just angry and unlistenable. Detected a tune in Come See Come Saw.
not bad, but not good either.
I have never hear of this group, but I loved this album! It's a really fun blend of punk and rock. I'll definitely be checking out more!
Had no idea what to expect from this, but it was pretty good. My favorite songs were "Used," "Ball Lightning," and "Come See, Come Saw," but nothing stood out negatively either. I tend to enjoy most punk music, and this was not exception.
Decent.
Immediately got the 90s punk vibe. Not quite rage music, but heavily annoyed music.
I was so unprepared for this, didn’t see anything worth listening to
Not really for me but this would be a fun album to skate to. Just get out there and THRASH
Great sound and energy, perfect 90’s power pop
tony hawk pro skater core
Favorite Track: On A Rope
Not bad not bad - on a rope is a definite highlight
Particularly enjoyed the one about hanging on a rope
Some of these songs were decent and some were not.
A fun listen, lots of interesting time and key changes. I had super low expectations and was surprised by how much I enjoyed this album
Surprised that I enjoyed this more than I was expecting to.
3.0 43:44 (14 tracks original cut) 4th album 1995 I love punk but this really isn't 'punk' per se. It isn't a bad album just didn't get into it either.
I haven’t listened to this album since 1995. The horn section made me thinking of it as ska, but listening now it feels more like west coast Punk. Nothing on the album is as good as On a Rope.
It’s completely fine, just doesn’t stand out in any way
Raw catchy rock with some horns splashed in here and there. A little too punky for me though
Should have listened to this yesterday, lol
Meh. Pretty neutral. Didn’t mind it but didn’t love it.
