Reviews (page 4 of 8)
First of all - I don't think this has enough of an offbeat rhythm to count as ska - it's sort of just pop punk with horns. Still makes me want to play some Tony Hawk Pro Skater. These guys aren't geniuses by any means, but the songs are pretty damn fun. Bit of a bar band vibe, like Hold Steady, Titus Andronicus, Japandroids, or Bruce. These guys aren't anywhere at this level, but now is as good of time as ever to make a big plug for PUP, if I haven't already - one of the best pop punk acts I've ever heard - strong compositions, good lyrics, incredible live show (with Chad) and Morbid Stuff is a top album of all time for me. I think these could have been a better album with a little editorial - alot of the songs sound the same, and could have been tightened to a fun 30 minutes.
Never heard of this band or album. It was okay. Nothing particularly great, but wasn't bad either. 2.5/5 Probably won't listen again
Good
yeah it’s alright
It's fine. I just started picturing Squiggy from Happy Days as the lead singer, and just started cracking up laughing. I can't unhear it now, it's Squiggy singing! 2.5 / 5 stars
With the band/album name, I though this would hit harder. It was fine, but nothing stood out to me.
A one-trick pony that doesn’t even nail the trick. 6/10.
I liked more straightforward punky songs, but more alternative songs annoyed me so much. Favourite track is Misbeaten
Utterly ok. Decent but really just alright
Im curious
Le punk, c’est correct parfois. Cet album est pas si pire, l’ajout d’une section de cuivre est intéressante, mais ça ne lève pas assez à mon goût.
strong opening i love the distortion on the guitars and the use of trumpets repetitive lyrics are surprisingly not annoying. rating: 3/10 collect vinyl? maybe
I'm not normally a huge punk fan, but this album wasn't too bad.
5/10
Meh, it was heavy but with no substance whatsoever
It was fine
Hadn’t heard of these guys at all before. With the title, kind of expected a vampire opera like in Losing Sarah Marshall but was pleasantly surprised with the fun pop-ish punk. Didn’t see particularly ground breaking but had a great time, would listen again. 3.4
okay, but not great. Liked the brass in selected tracks.
'On a rope' is wel een geinig nummer.
Punk can be very hit or miss for me, so I wasn't sure what to expect going in. I had never heard of this band or any of the songs before now. I gotta say though, a lot of the songs were catchy and fun. It's not my favorite album by any means, but I enjoyed listening to it all the way through.
Like Rancid and Reel Big Fish had a baby who had Elvis Costello's voice. It's alright. I appreciate the horns. If it has horns, I'd prefer The Urge or Fishbone. I'll give this a 3.
Unmemorable, thus it gets a boring grade
Strange sounding album in a way. Sounds like cleaned up or commercialized punk, some sort of predecessor to skate punk perhaps? While it sounded pretty good, I didn't exactly find any songs to vibe along to. Apart from the album name, it felt like a pretty mediocre experience. Weak 3.
Some fun tunes in here. They seem to be able to rope in ska and pop punk sounds without completely losing their edge, which can be hard to do. Some songs are low effort in the way punk songs can be. Ultimately not a bad listen, but nothing I’ll be coming back to.
Better than expected, some bangers
A decent little punk and ska album but not one of the greats.
Highlight Song/s: Born In '69 and On a Rope Punk with brass instruments is certainly interesting, especially with Bob Dylan as the lead singer. I felt like the album progressively got worse, nothing TOO bad. But it really did get boring and quite samey.
Decent 90's punk rock. But there are much better albums within the genre around, don't know hot this ended up here
What do you get with you cross The Mighty Might Bosstones with Rancid? Why you get Rocket From The Crypt, a band that I had never heard of until today. I'm riding the line between really enjoying this album and hating it because I've never been a huge punk rock fan, and the addition of the horns in this mixture either work really well, or sounds terribly dated. Weirdly enough, this album got better the further in I listened. Some decent guitar riffs seasoned throughout, but this wasn't anything better than average.
Not bad. Consistent feel and vibe throughout and some of the songs were pretty good. Nothing so good it really needed to be in this list though.
Only a few good songs
Disc amb tocs punk "arreglat". Algún tema més clàssic ( la majoria). Algun molt fluix (3) amb tornada fàcil. En general un disc que es pot escoltar per exemple cuinant però que no deixa un gran record. Tot s'assembla a alguna altra cosa.
3/5
Better than Coldplay
Yank crime better
Not bad, gets a bit repetitive though
Is there such a thing as easy-listening punk? There are a lot of hooky songs on here, but nothing really elevates. Drop Out reminded me of Kick Out The Jams. I'd say this music is along the lines of MC5 or X, but with a horn section and pedestrian lead singer.
meh. comme ci, comme ça, to pinch the pun.
Expected different music from the album cover, enjoyed nontheless, feel like you can hear some of the inspiration from later band like sum 41 and similar punk rock bands from the 2000s
3/5
Not my style of music, but catchy by the end.
I mean it wasnt bad but i didnt think it was that good either
Heard this album, or thousands like it, a hundred times before, good for a romp, nothing deeper than the skin. If its what you're into, go for it! honestly 2.5/5 but my internal rounder goes up
Decent
Punk Rock with killer grooves, I dig it
is ok, doesn't make the impression that Drive Like Jehu did, more conventional rock. has a bit of the bouncy feel of 2000s ska when the horns come in and that is not a plus in my books music: hated. (⌐■_■)
There’s nothing I love more than engaging with art for the first time, having already formed a prejudice against it. I had two angles for these guys. I had the vague idea that they were a ska band, and also they’re called Rocket From The Crypt, which makes it sound like they’ve got an element of horror punk or whatever. Anyway I figured this would suck bad, but it didn’t. It was a pretty good and fun album. Rounding down from a 3.5, because I still don’t want to fully let go of my prejudice.
This wasn’t terrible. I’m generally not an enjoyer of punk but there was something about their guitar mix that exhibited a seriousness, a maturity. I wouldn’t actively seek them out, but as a one-off spin it was alright.
Unfortunately not much here is interesting. If you like punk rock I suppose it'd be a good album, but there's nothing that makes this album unique or something that everyone should listen to at least once. The music is still pretty good though.
As a native San Diegan I am pretty partial to all things Swami. This album is full of high energy, but its pretty 1-speed throughout. Fave tracks: "born in '69", "on a rope", "young livers"
Honestly interesting but nothing special
I didn’t remember this group at all. They were ok, but nothing really stood out.
We don’t need so many punk albums
went into this with very low expectations. started ok, was somewhat enjoying music & vocals weren't bad. then got to Ball Lightning & found myself enjoying the lyrics. maybe it's getting a bump up compared to other albums this week (looking at you kid rock). 3.5 stars
Despite all the 1-star (and some 2-star) reviews floating around here, it wasn't that bad at all. Maybe it just seemed better after having to endure a Beastie Boys album.
Its a fun album. I like the mixture of punky/surfy guitar and a crooning singer. Reminds me of lots of ska of the era but it holds up much better. Rocket from the Crypt is a classic. Its an enjoyable listen, but doesn't leap out at me. 1 = hate this 2 = don't like it but not in a mean way 3 = good 4 = i love this 5 = top 5% of best albums ever? So probably only 50 albums in the run will get this score.
Good Rock with a nice first half, and a decent but middling second half
I am not sure why, but I am ok with this one.
Pretty consistent throughout the album which made it boring eventually
Loved 'On a Rope' and 'Young Livers' at the time, but I never got any further than the singles as I was probably listening to Wagner instead. It was great to see this on the list as I had forgotten all about this band. Although the rest of the album doesn't reach the same highs as the singles, its still a riotous romp at high speed. I shall give this another spin soon!
Reminds me of an up tempo Joe Jackson. Not as hard as punk, but with influences. The trumpet adds flavor and separates the music from being more punk.
nice and noisy
Pretty sick as sort of a Bomb the Music Industry! album before they existed, punk with lots of bells and whistles is fun Doesn't quite have the same highs to lift it up, though
you had me at dracula
I’d heard this before but can’t for the life of me remember why!! I don’t think I enjoyed it as much this time either, but it’s pretty solid! A lot of good melodies and vocals, but didn’t keep my attention entirely
pretty fun and uptempo but sorta unremarkable i felt. Atom Willard who plays drums on this record seems like the coolest dude ever
based off the wikipedia blurb, the albun is a lot more fun live.
Quite liked the album but it struggled to hold my attention the whole way through, think it felt a little too repetitive. Fav song: On a Rope Least fav: Middle
I liked it a lot more this morning than I did at the end of the day yesterday- think a certain amount of energy is needed to listen to this album. Good but not amazing and definitely got a bit repetitive after a while. Favourite song: Used Least: Burnt Alive
Not bad for a punk album 3/5
Meh. The songs all started to blend together, maybe "On a Rope" was a bit better. I'm surprised to see this one on the list. It sounds like their on-stage antics were the most interesting things about them. This is kind of a low 3 for me.
Late 90s southern California punk, with some ska notes whose main offense is just not being that interesting.
While familiar with the band name, am not sure I've heard any of their music. To some extent, it was nice to have something a little different (punk with some ska elements) but not sure this is actually good or the best representative of that subgenre. Let's say 2.75.
It sounds like the soundtrack to Tony Hawk 3! (Or another Tony Hawk that I never played). "Scream, Dracula, Scream" was a solid romp with lots of energy. It's a solid mood album with most of the tracks running together. Top Tracks: "Middle," "Young Livers"
Fun album! Near genre mix, and great use of horns. Like the Whale Ad, but a record.
--Middle...fun opening statement --Born in '69...some solid, straightforward rock --On a Rope...see above --Young Livers...not a lot of track variation but it's all pretty fun --Drop Out...meh --Used...changes things up a bit. Not sure the vocals are up to the task --Ball Lightning...another decent rocker but the tracks are starting to meld together --Fat Lip...I like this one. It has all the elements of previous tracks but this feels fresher for some reason --Suit City...these guys are fun and know what they're doing, but is this album doing anything different or special compared to other pop/punk bands from '75-'95? I'm confused as to why I need to hear this before I die --Heater Hands...sure --Misbeaten...this one is interesting. They've injected some surf rock --Come See, Come Saw...Slightly heavier than earlier tracks. This is good --Salt Future...it fits but nothing special --Burnt Alive...this one feels a little darker than the others. I like it
Rocks but leaves something to be desired
Sure, could be worse. Better than evermore by Taylor Swift
It was ok
This was unexpected, a band who's name I've heard more then I've actually heard music by. Loud aggressive garage rock, I'm here for it. Okay I've heard On a Rope and reading about them that looks like a song that had some burn and I can see why. There seems to be a whole pile of music that sounds like this that you really can't distinguish between the different bands doing it, it's fun rock n roll music that is a little disposable but fun nonetheless. I enjoyed this album but it won't get a lot of replay maybe a few tracks might make a playlist or two. I'm not sure it needs to be on this list but it's not like it's the only record I've questioned on this list.
Based on the name of this band and the name of this album, I thought I would hate this. Instead, I found it a surprise delight. A handful of tracks I'd happily return to, and an album (whose cover I hate) that I wouldn't mind playing again, either. It's like if early Green Day and Elvis Costello collaborated on an album or something. I'd give it 3.5, and it honestly feels bad to round this one down.
Cool
Not as timeless as albums it was compared too, but ok for a listen through
Favorites: ball lightning, Misbeaten Like a mix between The Beach Boys and Screaming Trees. I dig it, but nothing too special.
I actually found this quite listenable for a punk band. Was a little surprised to see how low their listens were on Spotify but I guess that's probably pretty normal for most punk bands from the early 90s. Nothing was amazing but again found it listenable for a punk group.
Not for me, but I respect it for what it is.
# 518 : Scream, Dracula, Scream I don't love it, I don't hate it. A couple of things stood out, but it was a bit repetitive and yet there are some genuinely energetic songs on here with cracking riffs and pounding drums. It's good, but not great. Favourite track : Young Livers Listened : 07/07/2025
Fun, 90s punk from SoCal. I wish the songs were catchier, but they were still cool.
I had completely forgotten about Rocket From The Crypt. "Scream, Dracula, Scream!" is a great title for an album, that conjures up images of the music contained within. Therein is its first issue, as for me it doesn't accurately convey the contents! There's lots of loud guitar and catchy choruses. It's well produced. It's well played. A nice 1990s 'pop punk' album. 3 stars. Would I listen to this album again? No, not as an album. The odd track perhaps. Would I buy this album? No. 1 "Middle" - Loud - 3 Stars. 2 "Born in '69" - Thrashy guitars, there's melody here though. Reminds me of the Hives in the chorus. The chorus makes this. Catchy. - 3 Stars. 3 "On a Rope" - I had forgotten about this song and band. Very good. Again the chorus is as catchy as hell, if a bit repetitive. - 4 Stars. 4 "Young Livers" - 3 Stars. 5 "Drop Out" - 3 Stars. 6 "Used" - 4 Stars. 7 "Ball Lightning" - 3 Stars. 8 "Fat Lip" - 4 Stars. 9 "Suit City" - 3 Stars. 10 "Heater Hands" - 3 Stars. 11 "Misbeaten" - 3 Stars. 12 "Come See, Come Saw" - 3 Stars. 13 "Salt Future" - Great guitar riff underpinning the song but the verses don't match it. - 3 Stars. 14 "Burnt Alive" - A little different from what preceded this track. The best rack on the album for me. - 4 Stars. Total - 46 Average - 3.29
Enjoyed it. First listen. Reminded me of Soul Asylum.
Interesting album
Standard pop punk
FINAL REVIEW I've decided to give this album a 3/5 after two listens. It's a solid album, with both the raw edges of hardcore punk and the catchy hooks of pop, but it didn't wow me. I am interested in possibly checking out more by this band, as I did enjoy listening to it. NOTES 6:10pm - at first, i thought this was a bit "not my thing", but not bad, but im liking it more as the album goes on. i like the ska influence on some of the tracks, and the melodies are surprisingly catchy. "used", in particular, has kind of an eighties springsteen thing with beach boys-esque backing vocals that i like. the lyrics are also really good, i like that they call for honesty in that confrontational punk way. 6:40 pm - after my first listen, i would give it a 6.5/10. not mind-blowing, but a solid, fun album that id probably listen to again, but not obsessively. im going to go listen to something else before trying it again. i like that it managed to be both raw and also incredibly catchy in a 1960s retro sort of way, kind of like a rougher version of the ramones (a band i love).
It's not bad, but I can't understand how this was chosen among the avalanche of similar/better albums from the late 90s.
I liked the theory more than the execution.
Loud, but better than expected
Can’t give it a bad review because it was perfectly enjoyable. But I can not understand why this is on here. Like at all. There is nothing about this album in 1995 which makes it particularly noteworthy
The thing with punk is that you need to be careful with it, it's a difficult genre to pull off because you don't want to end up just making the same 2 minute song 12 times and calling it an album, which is deceptively hard not to do. And this album does just about manage that, with most songs being much longer for usual punk standards, and while it can be very repetitive at times, there is still just about enough going on to keep it interesting.
It’s fine. Definitely reaching a point in this project where it’s getting a bit repetitive. I just haven’t had consistently awesome albums in some times. It’s mostly been 2 and 3 star albums. The kind of stuff the maker of this list was just using to fill in numbers. And, like, again, I think to all the amazing albums that AREN’T on this list, and I look at this one and wonder, “Why?” (And then I go to Wikipedia to see that it was popular in the UK, so it’s yet another album that the author of this list liked growing up).
They were fun live when I was 16 but their structure of song writing is lacking and not tight at all.
A third of the songs were good, I got tired of their shtick halfway through
Between the oddball band name and the cryptic (ahem) album cover, I had no idea what to expect from this mid-90s album. I guess I wasn't really expecting a punk-with-horns variant, although thankfully they're not identical to the likes of The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Reel Big Fish, Less Than Jake, etc., all of whom I've enjoyed, but they're kind of interchangeable. It was fun to watch their three videos to their (Europe-only?) singles "Born in '69" (intentionally cheesy 50s B-movie romp with alien vampires), "On a rope" (with completely irrelevant but adorable puppies and young farm animals, plus a strange assortment of lollipops growing on trees), and "Young livers" (the weakest video of the lot, with a sort of greaser-gang motif playing buttball), and the album in general is an impressive collection of tight, quick and pretty rocking tracks. It's a shame that the Interscope execs nixed their concept of filling in the space between tracks with woodwinds and strings. Judging from the Wikipedia entry, it sounds like Rocket From the Crypt's real attraction was in their live performances--carnival games, German variety shows (in Europe), progressively more elaborate stage costumes, etc.--so I'm sorry I never got a chance to see them play. This album may not count as a particularly refined music experience, but they get more than an "A" for effort and energy.
It's ok, fun at times, but wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it again. Highlights: Come See, Come Saw
Enjoyed the guitar and the unexpected ?saxaphine Favourites: come see, come saw
This album was fine, not sure I absolutely HAD to listen to it before I die though, it was pretty generic 90s punk rock. If this is on the list I hope there is also some actually influential 90s punk rock on here, Greenday will obviously make the list, but is it too much to hope for some NOFX or Rancid? (It’s probably too much to hope for) Fav songs: Used, Come See, Come Saw
Totally missed this in 1995, but really, was there anything to miss?
Enjoyed from start to finish but didn't feel I could really fully immerse myself into it. Some songs felt quite generic
Some nice guitar on here - mostly, just 'meh.
Nice!
The whole album sounds like a ska version of Ted lasso theme
I think a lot of these songs could have been great if they were in a different genre, but the chaotic, high energy punk/garage rock covers up some of the better motifs. As is, it's decent, but not something I think I need to hear again.
On a Rope is great Sounded like ska without being ska Enjoyed it a lot. 3
Aight
not my thing - punk
it was fast. it was loud. it was fun. 3
While it’s fairly generic sounding alt/punk rock, I loved the energy throughout the record and the band definitely has a lot of fun playing these tunes.
Catchy, new-wave punk with horns.
Not sure how I hadn’t heard of these guys, but good fun album. Not much variety song to song though.
Another one that is perfectly enjoyable and a solid rock out, but I don't really understand what it's doing here. Bit pop-punky, bit of brass, lot of shouty vocals. It's better in its more melodic moments but there were a handful that caught my ear and made it to the playlist. I'm not sure I feel the need to make return trips after a couple of goes through.
This is the sound I think of when I think "punk". I thought I liked punk. This was just okay.
On a rope was a great song from back in the day. The album is OK. Think they would have been a fun band to see live. Gutted I never got the chance.
Half of the songs had me humming, "On a Rope, on a rope, got me hanging on a rope." A solid 3 star album: It's not bad, it has at least one good track One star: It's offensive to my ears Two: It has no merits Three: It doesn't stand out particularly Four: Yeah, this is good Five: A masterpiece that deserves repeated listening
I remember seeing Rocket From The Crypt on Top of the Pops playing On a Rope and thinking that was a lot fun. That song has made it into most of my playlists throughout the years, but I'd never listened to the album. Is it a great album? Nah, it's all too samey. Did I enjoy listening? You betcha!🤘
They call it punk, but it seems a little too theatrical for my punk tastes. Young Livers I found fun, embraceable pop-punk stylings, the best cut too me. Much of the rest kind of one-note. A lot of fun, but I'm not able to take it too seriously. Like the song Ball Lightning--the whole thing built around want some cheese with your wine (whine)? Fat Lip, on the other hand, explodes. Back and forth.
Pretty decent punk/grunge. Upbeat but not overwhelming, well written and produced. Probably won’t come back to it again, but I didn’t hate it.
Een soort Elvis Costello on steroids, dit. Rare combi ook: wat glamrock, wat powerrock, hier en daar blazers, dan klinkt het zowaar als een jarenzestigbandje. Maar van alles net niks.
14 short , sharp punk bangers that could be from 2 decades earlier. Great stuff....
This is fun as hell. They don't make records like this anymore. Rock is basically dead, but this baby brings back some pleasant memories of a bygone era. Horn shots, four-on-the-floor blast outs, and some literal edge. Nice. This all being said, it comes across as one sonic glob to me. Not a ton of dynamics. Lots of sameness. Rockin' sameness. But still sameness. Due to the ultimate unremarkability of the record as a whole, despite being perfect to crush miller lites and shoot guns to, this album gets a 3.
A fine album, but not special, and definitely not one of the essential albums of the 1990s. I say this as someone who heard this album when it came out and has "On A Rope" in my regular rotation. The rhythm section of Peter Reichert and Adam Willard is tight. Other solid but not great tracks would be "Ball Lightning", "Misbeaten", "Come See, Come Saw", and "Burnt Alive". That being said, It was no ENEMA OF THE STATE, DOOKIE, or SMASH.
Fun time! I was just talking about this band the other day. Isn’t it weird that there was a band called Rocket From the Tombs, and when they split 2 bands formed, and then the same thing (kinda) happened with Rocket From the Crypt? Maybe not. But pretty fun time.
And PUSA isn’t on this list? Really? This was fine. I’d never heard of them and I’m not surprised. Pretty run of the mill. I was between a 2 and 3 on this. I didn’t not like it, so I don’t think it deserves a 2.
This is one of those albums I'd give 3,5 stars if I could. It has great tracks like "On A Rope" and the punkish sound with a use of horns is not as annoying as later music that would turn into Ska-Punk. I do think that the album loses steam here and there.
I didnt hear of this band, it doesnt sound bad, it increases the quality across the album. Its interesting 3/5
I kinda dig this. Kind of an interesting makeup, especially with the horns.
I just wasnt in the mood, but they were ok
Listens: 3 Standout tracks: Burnt Alive This seems like pretty standard affair for a Punk album. I have not much to compare it to. I have never heard of Rocket From The Crypt before and I suppose I won't hear from them again unless they have another album in the 1001 albums list. If I were to speculate, I would say that the music itself pulls in influence from the grunge scene, which was occurring in the 90s, as there are a mix of traditional "Punk-y" songs mixed in with some actual singing. It's not excessively thrasher music.
I wasn’t Born In ‘69, but I’m also not a Drop Out. This one gave me a Fat Lip!
Strange but strangely listenable.
So many times in this challenge, I've thought "Ugh, another punk album" only to be won over a few tracks in. The nature of the genre attracts so many well-meaning bands with the right attitude but nothing particularly new. The standard formula is "Don't worry if you have any talent, just play fast and loud". And it's far too tempting for a lot of bands to do exactly that at the risk of sounding like all of the other dime-a-dozen punk bands out there. Despite this, there are still a ton of great ones out there. Rocket from the Crypt are a great discovery, channeling the energy and style of The Ramones, with more diverse instrumentation, and making it some thing that feels both classic and ahead of its time. The fact that this was released in 1995 feels a bit out of place here. I had guessed, I would have said it was made at least a decade later, pulling on influences from mid to late 90s pop punk, but pulled back slightly into the domain of the 70s punk classics. RFTC aren't the best punk band I've come across, but they're still pretty damn good.
good listen, nothing stood out too much but I enjoyed the whole thing
Giving this a 3 because I couldn't figure out if I liked this or not. I don't even know what to say about this album to be honest. It seemed fine, but nothing really stood out to me as being memorable. Oh well.
This was actually nice
The first half of this album was pretty meh. I even contemplated hitting stop and moving on because I was so disinterested. The 2nd half was definitely better, with some really enjoyable songs. Even with the 2nd half rebound, it should not be on this list when there are better 90’s punk bands out there.
Initial impression sounds like the Hives with a little bit of mid nineties Ska trumpet. Strokes and Foo Fighters intros?
I thought the album cover was really cool. Only a few songs were good. Mostly mid.
I mean it's nice to listen to, but what the hell is this Album doing in this list/book?
This sounds similar to music that I listen(ed) to and have a nostalgic fondness about. Despite that I could not get into this album. Some of the songs were on the verge of being catchy but it never got to that point.
its okay. a little bit underwhelming
I mean, 3 stars just cuz I don't love punk.
For an album from 1995, this sounds like the pop punk albums of the late 2000's. And that's not a good company to be in. meandering lyrics over unfitting music isn't such a great sound for this kind of music.' it's an okay record, not great, not terrible. 3/5
Ihan menevä levy, mutta eipä sen enempää. 3/5
3/5. It's giving a mix of Elvis Costello and King of Leon as well as some Ramones, with Ska. It's a pretty neat collection of songs and it has a pretty fun uplifting vibe. Musicianship is not crazy but they are having fun. The lyrics I think are the downside of this. It doesn't have to be super intelligent or meaningful, but I don't even think they are silly or wild enough. It still was pretty fun though. Best Song: On A Rope, Drop Out, Young Livers
Meni je ovo prosječan garage punk daleko od bilo kakve antologije, ali ajde sjetio sam se da je bend postojalo 😃
OK
It's not trash, but it's a bit tedious. Apple Music has it listed as "pop" but I would categorize it more as post-punk, or 90s pop-punk. It's really not terrible, and I can see why people would love it, but I don't hugely love any of the genres this would potentially fit in, so the best I can give it is a hearty "meh."
Not bad - good energy level but it kinda does the same thing for the whole album so it eventually gets lost. I still like their sound tho.
another band I'd not heard of - decent American punk
cool stuff, considering it's first time i am hearing of this band.
I didn't expect to like this based on the title, the band name or the cover. And the first few notes almost killed it - but I persisted and mostly enjoyed the high paced, crashing and bashing with dark lyrics and surprising musicianship.
Just taken as punk edged party rock with horns it’s a pretty fun record. But nothing that drove change or influenced the direction of rock/pop
Albums like this force me to take a step back and think "1001 albums, that's a lot. They aren't all going to be incredible." After forcing myself to think about that, I then try to look at the album in question as a time capsule. The problem for me with this albums is primarily that there are better punk records before 1995, during 1995, and after 1995. The inclusion of this album here is surely a product of there being a lot more, better, punk rock albums making up the 1001. I better see at least two Bad Religion albums in here, or the placement of Scream, Dracula, Scream makes even less sense. As a standalone album, this one is fine. 2.5/5 really, nothing super special, but nothing objectively wrong with it. Some punchy drums, some great bass lines, a few catchy riffs, lyrics are okay, vocals are fine. It's 1995 punk rock, a few tracks for Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, and a few tracks to play over a movie to show that the characters being portrayed are angsty teens. Doesn't do too much outside of what I've written above. Final score for me is a soft 3/5.
I didn't really get this album. It seemed fun at first, but then it just kept going, and I was left wondering why it needed to be on this list 3/5
Das Album beginnt so gut, der ganze Rest danach ist leider sehr sehr durchschnittlich
Pretty good
On a Rope is a catchy song. The first half of the album is good and I enjoyed it. On a Rope, Young Livers, Drop Out and Used are good tracks. My biggest issue with this album is the songs just aren't that good as a whole. I like the inclusion of sax and strings on many of the songs, as that separates them from other punk bands without steering too far into ska territory. It's about the songs though. I felt like half of the album or so failed to engage me with the music and they just simply aren't that strong, no matter how different the sound may be at times. The overall sound was different but the songs did run together for me towards the end. This is a typical "3" album for me. Good but not good enough for me to listen to it again.
I rather liked Scream, Dracula, Scream! With its release squarely in the mid nineties, this album isn't the rough-around-the-edges punk from the seventies. Make no mistake, this album is punk but there's also alternative and pop. For Rocket from the Crypt's first release on a major label, the lyrics were creative and unusual, definitely worthy of attention. Also, I absolutely love the band name and the album title.
This was better than I thought it was going to be. Definitely late stage punk, but being a mid-90s album, it had that 90s alternative flair. At times, I heard a bit of Smashing Pumpkins-esque stylings here. Not sure if this needed to be on here, but considering the 90s alt element, I was pretty much here for it on a base level.
the inclusion of horns here is pretty interesting and unique for a punk-ish (non-ska) band but really most of this album i could take or leave. there are some really interesting callbacks to 60s rock here, like in 'used' and 'misbeaten,' but really i find this album is trying to do too much in too many directions for me to really appreciate any of it. one minute it's a bashy punk song, the next minute it's a 60s sunshine pop song. don't know what the vision was here. feels too incoherent. still, it's a fine enough album, but i wasn't into it too much.
It was enjoyable. Some good ole American Punk rock!
- Band name and album title hint at goth metal. Bit surprised to hear heavy pop-punk with ska influences. - "Used" is the best track. "On A Rope" and "Young Livers" are strong, too. - Would have definitely not minded if this came on the radio in high school, but I doubt I would have ever sought it out. A bit too standard fare for that. - Speedo on lead vocals sounds like the progenitor of Jacoby Shaddix from Papa Roach.
3.3 Pretty ok 90s punk. Didn't hate any of the tracks but didn't love any of them. I'm not entirely sure it's inclusion on the list, maybe something I need to read up on. Can think of many similar genre albums not on here that definitely should be over this.
Like most people I know on a rope but that's about it. Album is ok, very samey but I think with repeated listens it would grow
Starts with regular punk slop, but further into the album they get much better. Especially with the last song, it is really good. I dig these whiny vocals
While it's not horrible in my eyes like a lot of the punk records that I've gotten on here, it's not one that I'd revisit. It seems like these guys actually care about playing cohesively with each other and tried their best. This album doesn't feel sloppy, and they should get credit for that. I didn't have a moment where I felt like I was listening to this just to get to the end. Good job boys.
Not too bad
Enjoyed. Good guitar work. Better than The Offspring for sure.
Enjoyable
A few really strong songs keep this record from ultimately collapsing under its own weight - “On A Rope” being the prime example. Rocket From The Crypt don’t know whether they should stick to their hardcore roots or fully embrace the commercialization. The result is a weird middle road - one that I don’t hate, but it’s weird nonetheless. I read a bit about their live performances; I wasn’t around to see that, but I rate them higher than this.
Better than I thought it would be. Sounds better than a lot of bands like this.
I was dreading this based on the name of the band and the album, but it turned out to be pretty fun
It sounds like the music I listened to when I was 14. I do not know if that's a good or a bad thing.
Kinda enjoyed this, for what it was.
I wasn’t expecting the horns to be used as much as they were. Nice touch.
You can't appreciate somewhat bad music until you hear REALLY crappy music like Birthday Party. There were a few headbangers on this one.
I have never heard this before, it's not bad at all. Reminds me of a band that would open for another bigger band in the 90's. Really good, just never caught on. I'm sure if I heard this when it came out I would have liked it and probably bought the album.
This kind of music was done better in 1977.
All the hallmarks of 90s pop punk. Not my thing, but it's well done, I guess.
great did not finish yet
Pleasantly surprised. It’s pretty bland but still consistently good.
The kind of garage scuzz riffola that you can conceivably imagine a bunch of neighbourhood guys rockin' out to in their garage rehearsal space - which is a compliment. I can imagine Europeans liking this - which is not a compliment.
Powerful, reckless ride with no brakes
Worthy of a good listen, the tracks are varied enough to keep one's interest although still have difficulty in making out the vocals. Songwriting, playing and production are good and the general feel of post-punk with musicality works well enough although still too much of the punk in places. Like the variety of the songs and arrangements, would listen again.
Oscillates between cool and lame. On a rope a standout obviously. Ska-ish, punk-ish. 3.5
This had a nostalgic feel to me as ‘On A Rope’ featured on a compilation CD my Dad played on repeat when I was growing up. The rest of this album had much the same vibe as that track, and whilst it’s not my favourite genre, I still enjoyed giving the full thing a listen based on having a soft spot for On A Rope. Actually surprised my girlfriend isn’t into them cause it sounds like her sort of band!
Pretty generic 90s west coast punk, didn't hate it tho
This was better than I thought it would be. I wouldn't listen to it again, though.
It's ok I guess. Feels a little generic to me. There's a lot of bands that sound like this. Will I listen to again: 5%
I had completely forgotten RFTC, used to own this and their debut Circa, now (may still do somewhere). It is what it is, was not expecting this to come up on this list. When it hits, on a rope etc. yeah it’s good garage rock/post punk with decent hooks, but again surprised it’s an essential must hear(maybe that’s my bias and I don’t give the same weight to things from my youth as “before” my time), nice to revisit all the same.
Solid rock and roll
On a Rope was pretty catchy. Rest of it was above average punk.
This was some really original sounding punk with the horns that were in it, was like Ska-Punk. Singer was also definitely different than most punk singers. There were some fun songs in here that got me bopping. Again really liked the addition of the horns it added a nice wrinkle. This is on the high side of a 3
Solid puck album with no major hits, but good overall.
Favourite songs: Drop Out, On a Rope, Born in '69, Fat Lip, Young Livers, Ball Lightning, Middle Least favourite songs: Used 3/5
Rockabilly 90s US punk. Probably great live.
Usually, when I ask myself "why is this on the list?", it's because the album is really bad. This is not bad at all. But the question remains: what is so important about a mid-90s punk rock album that it made the list? I have no answer...
Too poppy for my taste, couple decent songs on it though.
Upon reveal but before listening: oh yeah, I remember this band -- but I don't remember what they sound like. After listening, yeah I dig it.
It's 1995. What's popular? Ska is having a resurgence. Smash mouth is getting ready to be a one-hit wonder with All Star. Green Day has just broken through with Dookie. This is an album of the 1995 zeitgeist. It reflects the rock sensibilities of the time through an amalgamation of a the styles present in the day, without performing any single piece of those styles particularly well. It's competent, and little else.
6/10. It sounds like a generic punk album to me. :)
Really great punky shut. Nothing spectacular but will get more play by me than some technically more impressive music
Album 563 of 1001 Rocket From The Crypt - Scream, Dracula, Scream (1995) Rating : 3.5 / 5 Pleasantly surprised. Wasn't expecting too much from this but I really enjoyed it. Some nice punk with just enough rock flair...maybe a little pop here and there. This was a good listen.
Very good. Although not quite a 4 it wasn't far off.
3.5
It's okay.
I kind of like this one, maybe it's because I'm listening to it in October so it just felt thematically right, but it's had a solid sound and we'll developed themes.
Interesting record. Not earth-shattering, but col nevertheless.
I was honestly surprised by who Rocket From the Crypt is. I was figuring death metal or thrasher and it turns out they are grung rock. Not only that but a couple of their songs are ones I always liked but never had a name behind. So yeah, I was pleasantly surprised by this pick. Made even more strong was that I really was not in the right mood for death metal yesterday. And I was good with the grung thing. Yeah, obscure maybe but sure, not hard to listen to.
Would maybe try again
It wasn’t half bad so half it gets
Reminds me of Graham Parker & The Rumour, but not quite as good (and less saxaphone, obvs!). Sort of all right - but no thanks.
Favourite tracks: on a rope; young livers; dropout
Punk rock that gives Rancid vibes with a hint of Springsteen. Good energy, punchy album. Not sure what put it on the list but was a fun listen.
Loved it. A lot of fun and had to loop back to On A Rope. Great start to my day.
A couple good songs. "Metal"? Rate 3.
A lot of fun, music I like, just nothing super memorable for me
Groupe inconnu. Punk dynamique avec une originalité : la présence de cuivres sur certains morceaux. Par contre l'album me parait un peu long avec ses 14 morceaux. =>3/5
Eh. Soft 3
Decently enjoyable
3.5
Some really good songs but most were meh.
Was okay, not really for me but I did like one song
It was pretty good
The first four songs are impossibly good, where has this album been all my life? The next ten, while good, explain why I've been without it so far. 3.5 really, but for being a bit one-paced and having two songs too many rounded down.
Solid punk album from ‘95. Not really the same as the punk I listen to, but had some bangers regardless. ‘On a Rope’ SLAPS
That's not my taste in musik. But ok.
Here's a band whose name I've heard plenty of times but I don't think I've ever listened to them. They definitely got my attention in the first few tracks and I wonder how I missed this way back when. It started to feel a bit monotonous but, overall, a decent album. Spotify immediately followed this album with a track from The Murder City Devils, which I thought was a good fit (and even more fun to listen to).
Yea, not bad
Misbeaten was cute.
Good solid album, on a rope obviously the most recognisable tune - but the rest of the album does stand up
i've always preferred John Reis as just a guitarist like in bands such as Drive Like Jehu & Hot Snakes rather than a vocalist, either way a decent album although im a bit surprised this is on the 1001 albums you have to hear
its not exactly bad but there isnt anything that great here that hasnt been done better elsewhere. i never see myself returning to this. 5/10
3.75
'This looks horrible', was my first thought. This has so few streams that it's possible only people from this site listen to it. Expectations were low. However, it did not disappoint.
Listenable
Was hoping that I'd like this, but I don't. I'm not sure why. I find it boring even though I feel like I shouldn't. I think it's something about the vocals or the structure. 2.5/5
Decent 90s punk. Not sure if this is totally essential, but I can see this fit in a skater’s CD collection alongside Randid and The Offspring. C+
Interesting addition of brass instruments to what is meant to be a punk music.
Kind of a generic, meet me in the middle of punk and garage rock. Vocals lack. And almost ruin the album for me, but I tried to focus on other aspects of the music which made it an ok listen.
straight up, no nonsense rock album. just a nice shot gun blast of an album.
Never heard of this, didn't know what to expect. Sounds like a fun band to see live, good energy in the album. Would fit in the tony hawk pro skater soundtrack. It all sounded very similar, 3*
3.5, woulda gone for 4 but it's too long. Will listen again
Maybe a little too clean for me, but that's probably because i know this is the guy from Drive Like Jehu and Hot Snakes, two wild rock bands that go hard as fuck. This does not go hard as fuck unfortunately, but it definitely rocks. The horns add a nice touch, though it starts to blend together as you get towards the end. Still solid.
Born in '69, On a Rope... a mid-90s, post-pink gem...with horns
3.1/5 listened 2x
At times ska, at times punk rock, and then strangely at times it Springsteen. I feel like it’s always just one good hook or chorus away from being mind blowing, but it always manages to be intriguing. Not a constant listen, but I find some enjoyment in it.
I saved this for a spooky occasion and it wasn’t very spooky. Oh well the music was solid
Wilder Rock, teilweise Richtung Krach. Aber mal ganz lustig zu hören. 3/5
I thought it was a solid album. I didn’t love it -but did enjoy it.
I remember my old boss at the record store I worked at loved this band. pretty good, i dig it.
Fine - I'd listen to another crypt rocket album if I came across one. As I understand it though, the live performances were really where the entertainment was. I find myself wondering, what prizes do you think they raffled off?
Rock n roll baby
Musically great, rough singing a bit too much over time
This was a pleasant discovery for me. I missed this band's existence back in the 90s. Op Ivy-like bands were more likely to catch my attention back then. Not too far off, but I missed this band. The first song had a ska vibe, or so I thought. As it continued, it was just solid punk. I'm not likely to seek them out again, as no one song grabbed me. But good stuff.
Ehkä snadisti liikaa torvia, mutta muuten hyvä. Paljon soittimia (ts. enemmän kuin basso, kitara ja rummut) muttei liikaa äänimassaa. Koko ajan mennään lujaa! Mielenkiinto pysyi musiikissa - sanoja en ekalla kuuntelukerralla jäänyt seuraamaan.
This was kinda fun. 3.
not so bad alternative
Ah yes, On A Rope. I'd definitely have been dancing about to this at a summer festival in the 90s. Whole album doesn't really stand the test of time though.
2.5
Fast and furious from the start, Scream, Dracula, Scream roars and screams it's way throughout the album. With that aside, the album doesn't elevate to another level, nor does it differentiate itself from other mid-90's bands that do the same thing better. I prefer Superchunk or even Jawbreaker who have a lot more character and write better songs than Rocket From The Crypt on a good day. Not sure what makes this essential? It's good, I like it, but not something that me or anyone else must hear.
Pretty cool
On a rope - fine tune!!
Blind album and artist. Kinda of generic punk album i guess? Nothing special nothing bad.
Actually quite enjoyed it. A bit more up my street, catchy fast paced punk straying into hardcore every so often. Was tempted to give it 4 but in reality it doesn’t stack up to the other 4s I’ve given.
A fun romp through a classic 90s punk sound.
Powerful rock. I can dig that well enough.
Pretty good! Better than I expected given the album art
Strong start, however, many of the songs blend together and fall into "good background music that I won't skip nor feel energized to utilize brainpower to pay attention".
A lot better than I was expecting. It mixed a lot of punk elements that I liked with some great sounding rock elements. Some of the guitar riffs were interesting too, like on Ball Lightning. Suit City and On a Rope were some other favorites
Probably not something I would go back to, but fun to listen to. Very much of the 90’s. Favorite songs were On A Rope, Young Livers, Ball Lightning, and Suit City.
Apparently these guys put on wild live performances, but it doesn’t quite translate to the studio. Decent.
A very nice time with this one. A good record. Don't know if I'll go back to it soon, but at some point it's possible
It was a fun album. I really like the transition from the first song to the second one. Other than that though, nothing really pops out.
Really messy and also repetetive
Overall, I enjoyed it. I’ve said before I tend to like music that sounds thrown together with enthusiasm. This is definitely that. It’s a bit cluttered in the mix, with the horn section feeling a bit squashed. And it’s not exactly groundbreaking … but it’s noisy, and fun. And that’s ok by me.
Good boisterous fun
After the first track I was thinking this would be all too much. After the seventh track I was thinking this was all too easy. Monotony settles in after a while and the known is all too familiar. Take from that what you will.
It's kind of like what you'd get if you asked AI to generate a mid-90s alternative rock compilation Some bits good, mostly pretty generic
I thought this was alright. I don’t know the band at all and really don’t know what was going on in the ‘90s in regards to punk, but it sounded fine? Just not super notable.
Standard issue boring punk garage rock
I gave this album a 3, but it's a really solid 3. This is a band of punk journeymen who make totally competent, energetic, fun rock and roll. They even experiment with horns and a little accordion. It's a good listen in the moment, but leaves no impression on me. I think the problem is that this kind of music is oversaturated. There are a ton of bands that sound like this and are able to write more compelling songs. Also, the lead singer is a weak link here. He has one mode of singing and boy does it sound rough sometimes. Even if he didn't improve his voice technically, just being able to convey a larger variety of emotions would help out a lot.
WHAT I ENJOYED: little hits of ska horns & absolutely HAM drums in many songs. This is an album where, because I was (sort of- I was a kid!) there for this era of music -- I start to have some empathy for why editors have chosen albums with limited staying power but a v strong impression of a specific time and place in music. It definitely sounds like the blueprint for the SoCal Ska-infused punk/pop punk/rockabilly era. GRIPES: I have a hard time listening to bands where the vocals feel so throughtless (like they really just picked a random guy to sing vs. considerting getting/becoming a real singer?); I'm not saying you need to GIVE VOCALS to perform satisfying music, especially not punk, but like...this guy doesn't really even sound angry or anything in some of these songs. Some of the songs seem like they'd be much more fun if they perked up a little -- you could convince me Drop Out was a low-energy interpretation of a Stooges song, for example. RECCOMMENDED IF YOU LIKE: early No Doubt, Hot Snakes, Fugazi (but calmer) #497 revealed / #512 rated
Чел из Drive Like Jehu навалил киша, уважаемо 6/10
Some pretty solid rock, upbeat, a splash of punk here and there
Ok not great.
It’s ok standard 90s punk type music
Could grow on me. High energy
Very cool. Never heard of these guys. and honestly by the name of their band, thought this was some 60's rockabilly/blues band. This is very punk. I've heard On A Rope track. I believe it was in a video game. It's cool/. Very San Diego-punk.
Gotta say, was more fun than I was expecting. It’s kind of grating at times in the way pop punk can be, but I’d definitely return to the highlights.
