Reviews (page 5 of 8)
Good punk record but nothing that special IMO
The name of this band and album completely threw me off, this is super fun energetic punk rock. The horns add a bouncy buoyancy to the songs, they hop along like a pogo stick. Some great songs, especially the first 5-6. Young Livers and Used were highlights for me. Interesting that this seemed to garner more success in the UK and Europe than the US, I personally had never heard if them. I think if I grew up with this I would probably be more inclined to rate it at a 4, but I don’t have the familiarity with it to get me there, it’s a very enjoyable album though and a great find I’ll definitely be coming back to.
Quite a cool punk rock album. Probably more up my alley than for most given all the Green Day and other pop punk I grew up listening to.
Nothing about this was ringing any bells until On A Rope came on, and even that was only vaguely familiar, so it doesn’t seem like these guys made a lasting impact on the musical landscape. I like it though. Fun, rocket-fueled punk that sometimes feels like ska or glam or operatic rock when those horns come in.
3.5/5
Not awful
Rock that seems super fun to play. An interesting use of saxophone and trumpet on several songs, and a fee standouts. Feels like a melted gold brooch.
Maybe I'm just jaded from being on a run of 3 star albums but this annoyed me. I was aware of their hit in the 90s and there are some decent pop tunes in here and their playing is undoubtedly good, but I ended up annoyed It just seemed so commercialised and annodyne. What happened post post-punk to go a full 360 and turn it into frat rock? It's still a 3 but for once I'm surprised with my reaction.
heard on a rope before but no others. was a fairly decent album, but nothing mind blowing.
Fame is a great song but not enough to make this interesting
This is very middle of the road for me. This is based in hardcore punk but is flirting with pop influences well which were already making their way into punk. This band doesn’t seem to want to commit fully to being a pop punk outfit and are most comfortable as a hardcore band. This indecisiveness permeates the album.
Ive never listened to a rocket from the crypt album but I know on a rope, apparently not from THPS2 though. I'd made my peace that this list was diverse and I wasn't going to hear all my favourite bands but that they chose this to represent ska/punk is a bit galling. It's okay, the singer sounds like the guy from less than jake, songs were nice enough. Felt the brass kind of took the edge of the punk side of things, but it wasn't ska enough to be fun, kind of got lost in the middle. Was never hooked by on a rope back in the day to seek out the rest of their songs, and having heard it I won't be coming back. Think it's probably the sort of thing you need nostalgia for.
I'm surprised at how much cool pop punk is on these lists. This sounds so far like a more accesible drive like jehu record. There are some ska influences on born in 69. Some INXS vibes in the immediacy/production. I can even hear some vibes like the Hives in this. The first three tracks are great. Sometimes it gets a little much but otherwise a 3.5 from me overall.
Not my style
Pretty good, but quite unmemorable and underwhelming.
I thought I wouldn’t like this, but it wasn’t too bad
It’s too rock-y alternative for me. I like the punk elements. Decent listen, but probably won’t revisit.
Pretty decent garage-punk with Costello influences.
Mostly enjoyed but it got a bit shouty
Quite enjoyed a few of these even though I had the sense it’s really uncool
Nice and live surely great fun.
Punk, rock, ska, cans, mid/fast, male, high energy, dancing shoes, good combination, positive and cheesy, voice not my favorite, not catchy enough for me, but good
This sounds like Fugazi if they did the soundtrack for a Disney Channel show. Is that a bad thing? I dunno. It's pretty fun, but not something I would ever come back to personally. I hear that these guys were (are?) much better live. I expected more "Drive Like Jehu" and less "Halo 2 montage music".
Can't see why it's listed here, but enjoyable and catchy alternative garage/punk backed with surprisingly non-annoying brass.
Best Songs: On a Rope Listen Again: Probably not
3.5
Love the drums. Good head banging album.
Horny punk revival that is very hit or miss.
Has its moments.
Average… just average
Cool for back in the day but doesn't do anything for me today.
Loud and with an edge, I was entertained at times but a little bored elsewhere.
I bought this album back in the nineties but the only track I could remember was On a rope and that was the track that stood out this time too. Standard American hardcore punk in too many tracks.
Wild!
I was impressed by how modern the production sounded and I liked the song On A Rope, but at the end of the day just not really my thing
This was an interesting one. It’s repetitive and boring… but not boring. That’s sounds strange, I know, but the energy of it throughout keeps you entertained all through out to at least some degree. While that aspect alone is amazing, it doesn’t carry the entire album. The first half had the better songs. It was ok. However, that energy alone gives this an extra star.
This is doing what is critical in punk in the way it brings the energy. I can picture this being a fun band to see live. Wait is this ska? Horns are showing up a lot. Is this a straight edge band? Is this a band that plays at college campuses? Is this... doo wop or like... a Beach Boys type band? On A Rope was fun. Not sure what this thing is but I didn't dislike it.
There are some decent tracks here. On a Rope is alright. Used caught my attention. Ball Lightning is a little corny but works. After that things started to feel like it was going too long Come See Come Saw brings the energy back up a little Burnt Alive is a strong finish. I'd say over all this album suffers from having a little too much of the same energy across the board. It put me in a trance.
Started off strong - energetic and fun - but it started to lose me as it went on. Felt that some of the middle tracks were weaker.
Generic 90s rock. Not bad, not special
Fun punk album.
Being that Drive Like Jehu is a favourite band of mine, I was excited to listen to Rocket From The Crypt as the next thing John Reis was a part of. First time I heard it I was underwhelmed. Now I appreciate it more, it’s a fun album!
Not really to my taste, but a solid effort that feels like a blend of Punk and Rock that makes for a fairly unique sound that feels a bit like if the Ramones decided to branch out a bit musically.
Pretty ok
This is better than the reviews would lead to believe. There are some interesting arrangements here and thier style isn't while contrived. I love reading about their stage antics, reminds me of my favorite band Phish
Some dudes playing some rock music. Not particularly bad, nor particularly good. Just some dudes playing some rock music.
Parts of the album I really liked, other parts not so much. Probably won't listen to them again.
Cool
Kinda mid. Screamo/rock ish
Bit weird but didn't hate it might go back and listen again at some point
Surprisingly I quite like it. It’s just the right amount of punk for me. On a rope was cool and the rest mixed it up enough to keep me interested.
So, for those like me who constantly get them mixed up, this is not Rocket From the Tombs, the important protopunk band that split into Dead Boys and Pere Ubu, this is instead the 90s punk band that took their name from them. There are some decent hooks on this album, but the poppy production and vocalist who sounds like a sloppy drunk Elvis Costello detract from the overall experience.
starts good but gets kinda repetitive
This was fairly decent, but a bit odd. There's a clear switch a few songs into the album from the grimier garage punk style to something more sanitized and clean that I didn't really enjoy as much. It almost felt like they shifted focus towards more standard rock tracks for some reason.
Pleasantly surprised. First album I actually didn’t know anything about but it was pretty sick!!!
I love the 90’s for deciding it was time to bring hornlines back, and I curse the 2000’s for letting that go.
I'd never heard of this band but the Apple Music write-up makes it sound like it was an important album from that era. I have to say I didn't really care for the singer's voice at all, but the songs were energetic and lively. The horns gave it a ska vibe. I wouldn't listen again and I didn't especially enjoy it, but it was fine.
Middle - 3/5 Born in '69 - 3/5 On a Rope - 5/5 Young Livers - 3/5 Drop Out - 3/5 Used - 3/5 Ball Lightening - 3/5 Fat Lip - 3/5 Suit City - 3/5 Heater Hands - 2/5 Misbeaten - 3/5 Come See - 3/5 Salt Future - 3/5 Burnt Alive - 3/5
Sometimes, I get Captain Beefheart vibes... However, this can actually be called music and does have nice elements here and there
Quite fun album, although I'm not really a fan of the singer. The use of brass is nice and the songs have a great energy, but after listening to this album, I think the band is a one-trick pony.
Ok album, pleasantly surprised
Pretty nice
The packaging was terrible enough to make the contents seem fairly decent!
Meat and potatoes rock, but the horns and Elvis Costello vibes are fun, I might come back to it.
Nice rockin' album. Recognized the single from probably a Tony Hawk's game. Short and sweet, had enough variety to keep me engaged for the 40 mins. Good find.
Scream being the operative word, it was very loud. Entertaining for the most part but had to keep lowering the volume. Reminds me of certain alternative rock bands from the late 00s - The Hives come to mind, they must have been inspired by this.
Surprisingly solid rock album.
if this album was any more Scott Kelly it'd be balls deep in a monkey while a thai bride is fighting off a coked up manny pacquiao for the insurance policy. in other news, my money is on Spackman being Dave.
Full Scott Kelly
OK, prefer the Cramps who do a lot more with a similar genre
Not terrible but not the greatest thing I’ve ever heard. Mid 90s punk was great but this wasn’t the best
I was a bit "meh" about this one.
This one took me back to my teenage years. Wonder how many times I've danced to On a Rope? Enjoyed the doubled guitars and it was better than I expected. Plenty of energy. Only thing I didn't really like is the singers voice - bit too California Man for me... He also sounds a lot like the guy from Less Than Jake but I'm sure they're from Florida 🤔
Good
First three songs went crazy, everything else was the same
This album makes me think back to the days of playing Tony Hawks Pro Skater on PlayStation. I think it would fit in well with that collection of songs. Maybe not the strongest showing of punk rock but not terrible either. Since their are other (better) albums with this genre of music I can not rate it higher than a 3 out of 5.
Bit of a mixed bag. Very close to liking it more than I did but might listen again.
Not bad. I was familiar with RFTC, but hadn't really paid much attention. This is about what I expected. Impressive musicianship, particularly for punk, but a little one-note throughout. On A Rope is probably the only track I genuinely liked, but most weren't bad at all. Just not really my thing.
Quite fun
The amount of horns in this album confused me, 3 stars.
OK, so not EVERYTHING about the 90s was awesome. Very aware of "On a Rope" because it was absolutely everywhere, and yes, it absolutely rattles along - a great track. The rest though.......... vaguely decent 90s punk-rock. C Fine, but can't believe there aren't other more worthy albums of inclusion.
"Muum can I buy this Rancid album" "You have a Rancid album at home"
Pretty damn fun. Dunno if it'll become part of my regular rotation tho
Me recuerdan a Los Imposibles, y a los The Rolling
It's 90s punk done right. It's louder and more aggressive, but not really hardcore, although the first tracks share some characteristics. Considering this is the same lead guitarist as Drive Like Jehu, it's insane how this is exactly the opposite in terms of accessibility. Where those songs were complex and abrasive, these tunes are much more melodic, borrowing from contemporary alt rock, retaining that distorted guitar. With the exception of the horns, there's not much innovation. There are some quirks, like the 60s sunshiney harmonic sound of "Misbeaten." But the amount of filler songs do bring it down. Half the songs do blend for me. In general, you have the energy and riffs, and I'm sure they'd make a killer live performance. It's consistent, has its hits, is not too long, and has a good choice in opening and closing tracks. If it were cut in half to an EP, I'd replay it much more.
It's good fun, but I feel like ska punk beat them to the innovation of having a brass section. On A Rope is a banger.
Pretty standard 90s punk, was still fun to listen to
6/10. I liked the bits with horns
I could see this being popular in the MTV and Tony Hawk video game era. It’s just not for me. 5/10
On a rope, on a rope, got me hanging on a rope, On a rope, on a rope, got me hanging on a rope, On a rope, on a rope, got me hanging on a rope. 🚀💀
Heard this album a few times now. Nothing really stands out, but it's pretty good for 1990s punk. The songs are longer than your typical punk songs and some have some catchy riffs. The best song, Used, is probably the least punk-sounding song on the album. Standouts: Used, Born in '69, On a Rope. Rating: 3/5
BEST SONGS: -Middle -Used
3/5. I can see where they get the Nirvana comparisons. Fun, little album. Nothing special in my opinion, but kept the energy high.
A fun, upbeat punk rock album. Nice horn section that isn't gimmicky, but not super influential.
This is really good fun. There's still a bit of grunge in here, but it's much closer to the reworking of punk that comes in the early 2000s really, so ahead of its time. The singer's voice is a bit grating over the course of a whole album, but it's fine for a few songs at a time. On A Rope is mega catchy, like that, there's some decent variety in styles throughout. 3/5, not miles off a 4.
Just a great punk record from a band at the height of their powers. So much fun.
Genres: Punk rock, hardcore punk Formed: San Diego, California in 1990 Run time: 14 songs, 43 min, 41 sec The fourth album by the American punk rock band. Spotify: Least popular song: 72.5k Most popular song: >4.5M plays. From the word go you know you’re listening to a punk band. The lyrics are fairly simple and musically it is punchy and maintains a good pace. I’m pleased to say they don’t scream the lyrics at the listener, which is sometimes the case. Many of the songs are sub 3 minutes and the longest is only 4:39, another typical characteristic of punk. The general theme of the album is life and the struggles it throws in the way. It’s about not always fitting in with the norms expected by society. It’s about defiance and persevering when the odds are against you. The album is a great nod to the original punk sound. It is a good listen, but has no standout songs for me. Listen Again?: No My Rating: ***
It's basically one 43 minutes song, but I like the song 3/5
Lots of energy, some catchy bits, decent overall
Okay punk rock music from a band I’ve never heard of.
Frenetic. Drum driven and drum heavy
I know this is tied to Drive Like Jehu, which I love. Reminds me of Rancid, and maybe Trent Reznor (vocally, anyway). Seems to be very early rock-n-roll influenced, with a lot of Elvis Costello thrown in. It's fine. Has some sticky hooks and great tunes early, but doesn't really crest over that. Favorite tracks: "On A Rope", "Born In '69"
This album started off really good with some killer sounds that felt fresh but as it went on, it fell into that generic rock territory. I can't complain too much because the good songs were great like like Middle and On a Rope. Also there are certain words and objects that are immediately logged as "bad ass" in my head and there are so many on this album cover. "Crypt", "Dracula" and a damn scorpion. Very cool
Good solid post grunge rock and roll. I saw them a few times when they toured that album and remember there being what felt like hundreds of RFTC bowling shirts worn around town in their wake. Great memories but I admit that it has been a couple of decades since I gave them a listen. Good fun album and it was definitely a breath of fresh air at the time but nothing really groundbreaking. I will have it on repeat for the rest of the day but that is just me
This is a very unfocused project from these guys. It pulls a lot from Elvis Costello vocally and a number of mediocre garage rock band instrumentally, which, in this context, feels indecisive and not well done. There are some solid, fun songs on here, but it’s difficult to get past the cheesy lyrics, repetitiveness, and unoriginal style. 3/5
There's some really good stuff on here worth another crack
It was okay.
There are so few good US punk band, these are not one of them
Not the worst 3
If the album was 3-5 songs shorter it might be a 4-5. Really enjoyed the music, the base guitar was a little relative and not interesting, the horns were but they were used a little too relatively as well. It’s kind of my issue with punk is how repetitive a single song can be
High energy rock with punk edge, not much stands out besides the energy
If I can describe this record in one word, it’s 90s. Scream, Dracula, Scream is the epitome of 90s punk rock. No, I mean it. From ska punk, to cow punk, to Midwest emo, to skate punk, to traditional punk, to even grunge and alt rock. Like this is the epitome of 90s punk. There is some hardcore influences but it seems only for specific parts of specific songs. Kind of a shame but what can you do. Now, I love punk rock and I think that it is good a lot of the time. However, this album is kind of boring. The wide range of influences may seem nice, but none are truly done in a way that standout (maybe the ska punk influences but there are some horn performances I can be more fond of honestly). As it stands, it is just a lot of punk. And I’ll admit, I am pretty tired so that doesn’t help, but it can certainly be more interesting. I enjoyed this record, I’ll admit, but it wasn’t the most interesting. It peaked in the literal first minute and just mellowed out. Eh, while it is boring, I did kind of enjoy it on the notion that it is punk rock. For that and that alone, I’m willing to give this album a 6/10.
solidly punk, fairly accessible.
Not so good fr
In between the wailing sounds of Drive Like Jehu, guitarist John Reis played and sang for Rocket from the Crypt. Rocket is a much more straightforward rock band, while maintaining a lot of the energy and loudness from Drive Like Jehu. This energy is backed by a horn section, borrowing slightly from ska's third wave resurgence. It's pretty good! Not nearly as forward-thinking as Drive Like Jehu, but it's got a lot of classic songwriting combined with a passion for noisy guitar and drums. It works for Rocket.
Guess which album number this is? Yep. #4. Alternative punk? Some of the metaphors are wayyyyy over my head. "Young Livers" rule tonight? The sound is decent, though.
There are some really strong moments on this. On a Rope, Young Livers and Drop Out stand high for me. This was close to a 4 for me, but a bit too much of it blurs together and isn't very memorable. Still enjoyed quite a bit of it.
Best Song: Used. I might just be a sucker for gang vocals, but I liked the blend of punkishness and doo-wop on this track. Worst Song: Heater Hands. Proof that you can over-repeat an outro. Overall: This album is the most 3/5 an album can be. Was it full of fun, bouncy little rock ditties? Yep. Did I enjoy listening to it? Check. Will I remember an ounce of it in even one week's time? Absolutely not. The embodiment of "we're here for a good time, not a long time".
Less chilly rock... But I guess it's not something you can't listen to if you're into this kind of rock/punk.
I really liked this at the start but this tracklist is so front loaded then gets quite samey at the end, the first couple of songs are bangers though 3/5.
Starts off like a punch in the face. On a Rope has big Faith No More vibes. I really liked Ball Lightning for the mentions of cheese and wine. I was so warmed up to this band by the end that Burnt Alive is also a fave.
I liked the album, and I will say the singer does a very good Elvis Costello impression. But the songs are all very... consistent. They're high energy, but there's nothing to vary them at all. After hearing the whole album, you're exhausted. One song up on shuffle is great, but all 12 of them? I doubt the tempo for any of these songs varied... at all. It just all felt like it blurred together. The horns came in for a song, then they were gone, and came back again. I needed something slower to mix it up a little, you know? Just for a minute or two. Nothing to really write home about, high 2, rounding up to a 3. Next.
Ah, 90's punk. I wonder why no one ever coined the term brass punk for bands like RFTC or Less Than Jake, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Fishbone, etc. who prominently featured horns and sax in their ensemble. I gotta admit that this isn't my scene - but it's not terrible. The brass brings a soothing effect to the otherwise pounding sound. Sort of like adding cucumber to gin to cut the bitterness. I felt like the opening couple of tracks, including their apparent big single Born in 69, were lacking that melody. But I started to change my tune (as they changed theirs) at On a Rope and Young Livers. Definitely a lot more vocal harmony and more well-blended brass and strings through the middle of the album. The sequence of Ball Lightning, Fat Lip, and Suit City was a great listening experience. My interest started to wane from there, with the exception of Come See, Come Saw - bass and brass nicely partnered in the opening of this track and deft pairing of brass and guitar as it progressed. Burnt Alive was a decent closer to the album I guess. I feel like if there was a list of 1,001 musical acts you need to see live before you die, these guys would be high on the list. As for the album, it feels like a solid 3.5 but no more. Too bad there isn't a button for that.
This wasn’t a bad album, but it really didn’t do anything for me. I enjoyed “Fat Lip”, mainly for the creative guitar riff. ”Misbeaten” was interesting too. Most of the music sounded like punk with horns. Not much more to say here.
Nothing terrible, nothing that blew me away
Not as bad as the I thought it would be based on the name but still not at all for me. Just scrapes by with a 3.
Surprisingly, good and energetic. Never heard of these guys before.
Fav songs: - On A Rope - Used - Burnt Alive
The first couple of tracks were fantastic, but it starts sagging after that. There’s some good moments in the later half, but most of the time it’s just generic punk.
On a rope on a rope got me hanging on a rope.. still a great punk rock song and their biggest single. Probably Group Sounds is a bit better (4 stars, at least in my memory) but SDS is quite good as well of course. Quite a surprise to see its inclusion in the list.
Energetic rock, but nothing special.
Very decent punk rock, don't like the vocals very much.
Littered with bangers. Nothing fancy or earth shattering, and doesn't sound like an album up for consideration as one of the greatest on time. But no skips, just good all around.
While I liked the sound of this record and I would put a couple on playlists I don’t think it belongs on this list. Definitely worth a listen though.
straightahead rock with various punk, ska, surf vibes. good background road trip music for when the Offpring feelstoo high energy
I'm not sure if the lyrics are washed out by the music because that's just how they like it or because the lyrics aren't terribly good. Either way, it's kind of annoying. Still, the instrumentation's decent and the brass gives them a nice, full sound. Giving them a generous 3 stars.
The poor man's QOTSA. One dimensional AF, but you cant deny it rocks through its whole play length
The most average thing I’ve ever heard.
Unoriginal wannabe-ska 90s alternative
Nothing but punk rock from start to finish. With a larger budget than their previous releases, they definitely utilised it to it's fullest potential. With string sections, brass sections and of course the mainstay distorted guitars and heavy percussion made the listen quite rich. However, I found the last few songs on the album a little lacking. Best: On a Rope Worst: Salt Future
90s punk rock n roll, but with the bonus of horns. Ok, probably as good if not better than over-rated Green Day.
It’s interesting - the music is pretty good, nothing really bothered me. But at the same time, it doesn’t jump out with anything special. I can see why they were signed but I can also see why they weren’t huge
T3B 1. On A Rope 2. Born In ‘69 3. Dropout Really good punk album. Just not an A or S tier. Solid 3.
Boa sequencia de punk-rock
not bad, fun music
This grew on me as it went on, the guitarist is really good, doesn’t particularly stand out among punk music but another solid album worth the listen
Forgettable
Reminds me of a thousand generic support acts I saw at gigs in the 90s. Nothing particularly special but not bad either.
Great band, but not really my thing.
Reminds me of guitar hero mixed with a punk rock scene
Brings me back 20 years. Hard guitars and fast pace.
Good energy. Started sounding like a standard punk album, but had a few interesting songs
Not bad, 90s punk/ska/rockabilly prototypes. Adam Willard is the drummer ..
Didn't enjoy as much as I thought I would, being an alt-rock album from the 90s. The ska and high energy vibes get a bit obnoxious after 20 min, let alone 40. OK in small doses, but pretty unmemorable for a whole album.
Some creative genre blending, reminds me of Sublime in places.
Very intense. Too intense, calm down. I like the songs where there are hooks that differentiate from the barrage.
The definition of fine. I did not hate it but would be happy to never hear this again. I really did not like the singer’s voice which was hard to get past. It was a little too much like the whiny 90s ska of a tony hawk video game soundtrack for my taste. I don’t think the horns really added much thoug I usually love horns. I did think Used sounded like Bruce so that’s a plus.
Okay, I was really prepared not to like this, and the first few songs did nothing for me. But once you get get past those, this is a pretty solid album. It's catchy, has great energy, and it's distinct from a lot of what was going on musically in the mid-90s. These guys are pretty good. Fave Songs: Used, Drop Out, Fat Lip, On a Rope, Suit City
Some good tracks. Not something I'd listen to again.
Generic mid-90s, precursor to the ska revival
Sounds a lot like other albums, entertaining though
This album sounds a bit as if Elvis Costello felt like starting a punk-rock band in the 90's with a brass section. And there's nothing wrong with that. It rocks away really well. The brass section gives it a little more schwung. But it's not really either catchy or punk enough to really hold interest long.
Bueno
Definitely one of the weirdest band+album name combinations I have received off of this list so far. I had no idea what to expect going into 'Scream, Dracula, Scream!' based on the artwork and my lack of knowledge on this band; however, after giving it a listen, I would say that this was a fairly interesting project but not one that is 100% deserving of a spot on this list. Don't get me wrong: I was enjoying myself throughout this one and noticing myself tapping my foot a lot more than I usually do when going through a new album. It clearly has some strong punk influences but reels these back to create some solid alternative rock tracks with high energy. It was particularly cool to see them incorporate strings and horns as it really boosted their overall sound and made them just a bit more unique. While all of this is great, I wasn't a huge fan of the growly voice the lead singer put on throughout, and a lot of the songs ended up blurring together by the end of the somewhat long listen. These were not enough to ruin it completely for me, but they do make me bump this one down a bit on the rating. 3/5. NOTE: I found out later that the leader of this band was also one of the founders of Drive Like Jehu, a band that made one of my lowest rated albums so far. I can 100% say I enjoyed this project way more than that one. Much more my speed.
🎶on a rope, on a rope, got me hanging on a rope🎶 Did not know that I knew this band! It was good, but I won’t seek out more of their music
Decent riffs. I do enjoy the brass instruments on what is essentially a pop punk song. I guess that hints at a ska/rock steady influence. I'm not enamored with this album though.
A decent fun album - a bit too sneery for my liking but can’t fault it much otherwise
Bien. Rock ochentero.
I'd never heard of this band before, pretty fun listen.
I like Rocket from the Crypt, but am surprised that this is considered a must-listen album.
I didn't mind this album at all but I don't think it was that good. Kind of sounded like a lot of things I like but just not good enough, a bit like the Offspring, Sum41, Green Day etc but kind of missing something which I can't put my finger on. But I did enjoy it.
I liked this. Proper balls out rock from the 90s alt years, surprised I hadn't heard it before
This is a slightly more palatable Smashmouth. I waffled between a 2 and a 3 and eventually went higher on the strength of their best song. Best track: Young Livers
Based on the cover of the album and the name of the band, I thought I was going to hear something along the lines of Slayer or Suicidal Tendencies. I liked this album more than I thought I would, but it still landed at "okay" after rounding up. "Misbeaten" and "Used" were the peak of my interest, but overall I was just waiting for the album to get over. I did not dislike the album, but I'm not sure if I liked the album either.
I dont think Ill listen to this ever again but glad I got to once.
A fun album. Somewhat unremarkable. One of those "I don't hate it, maybe I even like it, but why is it one of the essential 1,001 albums of ALL TIME???" albums.
I guess it’s not bad as far as punk music that was released 20 years after punk started. But it’s still punk released 20 years after punk started. Sex Pistols 1) couldn’t really play but 2) they were relevant. These guys meet just one of the two. I feel charitable giving a 3 but it sounds like they did some fun stuff in concert.
Better than I expected from a "punk" album that's 43 minutes long with only 14 songs, but still not very good. The songs are too long, too slow, and both too melodic and not catchy enough. 2.5/5
it's fine, but I probably could have died without needing to hear it
I dig it
I had no idea what to expect from this - fun! Fav new track: Born in '69
Decent. Would make a good fictional band in a movie. It’s what I kept thinking as I listened. “This music is good, I thought to myself, but not enough to be well known.”
It was ok just not memorable and no need to listen to again.
Not bad, but the songs sound kind of borring and generic. This thing did come out in 1995 though, so I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt that this album probably wasnt generic at the time.
I liked the vibe of this album more than I liked any particular song. It’s a decent rock album with good production and is very of its time but nothing really stands out in particular.
Didn't mind this. There were no standouts but nothing really bad either. Probably would have been a cool band to see in concert, but the songs didn't have any staying power for me.
Pretty rockin', pretty '90s, pretty great.
Some real high-energy stuff. I was unfamiliar with the band and their music. Reminds me a little bit of Mighty Mighty Bosstones and similar bands -- hard-charging fast-paced rock with a horn section. Some of the tracks were fun.
Decent 90s punk album that's a bit too long and lacking a big hit
Ameno.
pretty peculiar, it has elements of 80s hardcore, but also Cramps-style and maybe even paving the way for pop punk bands that came in the late 90s?
Sounds a bit like Scooby Doo chase music from the mid 90's, and that's more than fine.
- first good punk album I've listened to - surprising orchestration - some standouts but not enough to make punk a thing for me.
Too ska for me.
This album didn't really grab me. It wasn't bad, just a bit meh.
Is this Ska or Pop Punk? I bet this band is a fun concert but I find it is kind of generic. There are a thousand bands that sound like this.
Fun with lots of influences that are apparent
On a Rope Ball Lightning Third wave ska meets pop and street punk
Some fun jams and riffs in there but probably not anything that will stick with me. Never really been interested in ska and this hasn't really changed that
some fun songs.
Starts strong but peeters out. If it was an album of the first five songs it would be incredible.
Sounds interesting
Fang average
3.5/5 nice punk/rock album, i'll have to relisten.
OK.
Tällaiset levyt ainakin allekirjoittanut ostaa turhankin helposti.
Pretty damn good. High energy, good beats. 100% reminds me of the early punk days.
Danko Jones vaikutteet heti alusta alkaen.
On tämmöistä tehty paremminkin.
A band that Ishould be more into than I actually am, but just never quite got into them. "On A Rope" is an absolute classic and I remember seeing them at Glasto 98 but I've never listened to this album in full. It was a good vibe but I'd def cherry pick the best songs (by which I mean "On A Rope"). 6/10
I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Slap bang in the middle 2.5.
“Scream, Dracula, Scream!” by Rocket from the Crypt (1995) Well, this is new (to me). And it’s good, although I don’t recall that Dracula ever needed Van Helsing’s encouragement. I always thought the scream was a reasonable and expected, if spontaneous response. The scorpion in the cover art is a nice touch. Nonsensical lyrics are okay when the verbalizations are carefully chosen to reflect the meter and mood of the music. That is definitely not the case here. “You put a bullet through your nose” (on “Used”) is one of the few meaningful lines on the record. Hmmmnn, redemptive. And the title of the track “Come See, Come Saw” is clever, but a greatly missed lyrical opportunity. But the album is characterized by high quality, hard driving rock (and even pop and ska) progressions and riffs, well supported by a strong rhythm section. Very competent, but not genius. Plenty of engineering and mixing variations, with tasteful and powerful distortion. Some creative end-of-track fades. “Young Livers” (another clever title) is well arranged, with colorful backing vocals and horn section. Indeed, the backing vocals and horns throughout this album are what favorably sets it apart from so much else. This album is a nice execution of what they’re trying to do, if a serious listener is in the mood to treat his/her angst by being submerged into someone else’s. Kind of a sonic self-medication. Just don’t get addicted. 3/5
Fun album though
Man what
Noisy. 5/10
The very beginning stuff was a bit too hard and electric for my taste, but it got a little more to my taste later in the album. Not too bad, but I don’t know that I’d be looking them up.
It was okay, I'm a fan of the brass under otherwise pretty heavy rock but didnt grab me
Hot Snakes with a horn section. While the arrangements are somewhat simple and SJR's voice can't carry all of the tracks, there's a solid core of great balls-to-the-wall rock songs here.
Ihan asiallista rokkijytkettä jota kuunteli oikein mielellään. Bändi oli itselleni täysin vieras. Vahvat Danko Jones-vibat tuli ihan postiivisessa mielessä. En kyllä ymmärrä mitä tämä levy tekee listalla, kun esim Hanoi Rocks teki ~saman paljon paremmin jo vuosikymmenen aiemmin.
Pretty okay album. Decent songs, not too memorable though. Nothing too bad. Middle of the pack
alright, not too good not too bad
Not bad. Like the voice that sounds like LTJ, but the rhythm not that much
Not too bad, there are some strong poppy punk songs, although the latter half of the album blurred together and felt rather filler-ish.
did not like it as much as Jesse, but it was better than I expected
Not bad. I felt the songs were missing hooks.
Not a big fan of the album. 2.5/5 stars. Living End & Billy Talent are better in my opinion.
spotify. eh
Punk
This was like Iggy Pop gone Ska. I don't know how I feel about it.
A couple of good songs.
This was a fun album, enjoyed it!

okay
En litt sterk 2’er. Liksom energisk rock uten fantasi og trøkk
Really samey, which is this particular genre I guess, but it doesn't really move the needle for me.
It's all right. Didn't love it, didn't completely hate it.
2.95 Guy sounds like costello
I almost decided to skip this album, but I'm glad that I stuck with it. I genuinely enjoyed the energy that some of these songs brought. The highlights of the album for me were the horn section and the background vocals. The lead vocalist, the vocal arrangements, and the musical style reminded me of Smash Mouth at some points, but smash mouth is a bit more memorable. Again, I'm confident to give this a two, but I don't think it deserves a three
Listened to the first 3 songs last night, and thought a 1, for sure; I'm a bit over half-way through now (the next morning), though, and it's not *quite* so obvious, since the songs have (setting the bar low) gotten a bit more tuneful, anyway. So, between a 1 and a 2. "Misbeaten" (track 11) even has a catchy riff or two. Rating this gets back to the question of what do the ratings mean: if it's compared to the other albums on here (and especially if you imagine a roughly even distribution of 1s, 2s, 3s, 4s, and 5s), this one's a 1. But, since I think it's more of a universal rating of how good is this music, on a scale from 1 (worst) to 5 (best), I think this one might just barely be a very low 2. Maybe I'm just relieved that it wasn't too painful to listen to (setting the bar even lower, lol). Think that's what I'll do: the lowest of low 2s. That guy should not be a singer, though.
Nothing special Fave track: On a Rope
Cool artist name, cool album artwork. But the music leaves a bit to be desired. 2.5/5
Gave up after a while. Too American.
No thanks.
One hit wonder blandness
On a rope is fun. But one song is enough. Feels too fake and over produced and polished. No scuzz or roughness to it.
Scream Dracula Scream I remember On a Rope from back in the day, and it is still a great, fun song, but its really the only time they hit upon a bit of gold on here. It’s not a terrible album, and there are some little touches like the Beach Boys-esque twinkles at the end of Used, or the organ and backing vocals on Misbeaten, and the horns give them a slight point of difference. But unfortunately those horns oscillate between adding nice instrumental colour as on Young Livers and adding way too much ska, and the latter wins out far too frequently. He also really doesn’t have a great voice, and his thin, raspy unintelligibleness makes all the songs sound very similar. Apart from On a Rope there’s nothing compelling that would bring me back, so I’ll go for a 2. 🧛🧛 Playlist submission: On A Rope
Middling
Very mid. Very repetitive. Not sure why it's on this list. Very repetitive. There are far better examples from the 90's for this genre. Very repetitive.
Das Album wurde in 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die aufgenommen — nicht ohne Grund.
I mean, good punk album, not my type
You can just listen to On A Rope and you will get the same experience and effect as listening to the whole album. But if you listen to the entire album, you will feel as if you have wasted time.
This kinda punk is a little too hard, too close to heavy metal, for my tastes. Some songs on their own are OK, but this banal album mostly elicits a disinterested shrug. Oh, and I don’t care for the dude’s voice, either.
Mostly disappointed — nothing grabbed me except Born in ’69, the one moment that actually hit that gritty Nirvana‑punk vibe the rest of the album never found.
Kind of a chore
Didn't enjoy this, it's a half formed thought
I listened, and I'll say this.. it was an uphill struggle. Dracula didn't offend me, but he didn't quite capture my attention either. It's like watching a movie where nothing particularly terrible happens. There were moments that felt promising, but they never quite coalesced into something truly engaging. 90s punk, as a genre, generally elicits an "ugh" from me. I've never really been into punk, but I did hang out with some punks pretty regularly during this era. I don't remember them ever mentioning RftC, and I certainly don't remember seeing any of Rocket patches on the leather jackets they wore. And I can kinda see why. I'm 7 songs in. While this definitely fits 1995 with its sound, it's yet to do anything for me musically. Eh… And that reaction really isn't any better than the "ugh". And while I like the high energy, the arrangements don't interest me. C'mon. I had a mediocre ELO yesterday. I'm kinda missing that now.
Always feel I should like Rocket from the Crypt, from a surface listen it seems like it’s in my wheelhouse. But it never clicks, high energy but a little paint by numbers.
eh
посмеялась над come see come saw, но в целом не моё)
This just music. It’s not terrible. It’s just music though. It’s like rock ‘n’ roll or something. It’s got good energy though. Didn’t mind it.
wiso hend mir 90er punk i dere liste? aso die erste paar songs sind etz no easy. sie sind irgendwie afoch au rock n roll. sehr 90er glichzitig. wiener singt vorallem. ich gseh nöd so ganz was ich us dem album söll useneh. s isch guet gspielt mengmol no catchy und dases blöser het isch huere cool aber ich bhalt sehr wenig. 2.

need more raw energy on 'punk' project 4/10 Will I add this album to my library? no
Some band's have the same, Uniform, tone throughout an album. Sometimes is good to have such albums to pair with a particular mood. 2.75 / 5
meh
I remember having the CD years ago I never really got into them. It’s not bad but just didn’t stick. 2.5 star
Music was ok but I really didn’t like the vocals. There were a couple of tracks that sounded a bit early Costello but not enough to make me want to listen again.
Pretty boring. Just kind of became background music for me
Meh. I generally like punk (some, not all) this seemed uninspired.
Why this. So many more deserving recordings.
ehhhhhhhhhhhh atrocious vocals im ngl highlights (ish): on a rope, fat lip 1.5/5
This really is NOT the sound of my 1995 and for a punk band they sound insufficiently shambolic, well arranged and entirely melodic and harmonic. I get the sense that the band were better known for their idiosyncratic live performance which got the interest of the music press and TOTP ultimately. Well I've heard it before I die so that's something!
Not liked it so much
High energy garage rock, but ultimately a little generic. I feel it falls just short of three stars, which is a shame, as I hate giving it only two.
