Reviews (page 7 of 7)
Bro is NOT music. I hated his style, his weird squeaky voice and most of the beats. Child Playz was straight up goofy. The only thing that could have saved this from a one star rating is the occasional catchy beat, but that is canceled out by the awful album cover.
This was mid. And it turns out the guy is a loser who beats women. So ...
Did not like.
Didn't do anything for me, have no desire to listen to any song from this album again.
The album title itself is a classic example of overpromise and underdeliver. Calling yourself the "Soul Machine" and then delivering this? It’s disappointing, to say the least.
Not my bottle of milk
Proper pants
I can't listen to this shit
What an annoying voice.
Hell nah
Lets hope he won't do that again.
While the cover art did not make me expect good things, I do like Goodie Mob and Gnarls Barkley, so I expected to have at least a little fun here. Unfortunately, I just did not like this, and I think there is a reason this isn't brought up a ton any more (at least in spaces that I'm around). Like I said, I feel like I should at least be having a little fun here, and a lot of these songs aren't terrible, but there's almost *always* something bugging me about this thing, just getting in between me and enjoying this almost constantly. Firstly, the overall sound of this is *very* dated, this is not my era of music, and it isn't quite old enough or good enough that it sounds truly classic to me. This probably wouldn't be a problem if one of these songs came on in public or in a car or something, but when listening to this as a whole, it really becomes apparent how stiff and sort of awkward even some of the better beats sound. Now let's discuss CeeLo Green himself, I do not like his presence on here. It feels like his approach should be interesting, he is kind of getting into a pocket with a very sing-song-y cadence and a lot of push and pull. However, to sell some kind of soul adjacent persona, he gets like really growly in a way that's sort of hard to explain, but as a consequence his annunciation on here is awful, especially when he hits faster flows, and it all just turns to mush. Additionally, he is usually mixed *bad*, like way to low, it feels like he is competing for space in the mix with the beat most of the time, which compounds with the cadence to make his presence *super* grating. Additionally, his singing voice itself is really not that good, sometimes it sounds fine, but on a song like All Day Love Affair, he doesn't sound confident and, sometimes, especially on the first verse of evening news, I'm not even sure if he's in key. It's also worth noting that his lyrics don't do much for me, he isn't saying much that's especially interesting, and especially when he's in double time flow he even gets into a "spiritual lyrical miracle" pocket every once in a while (on I Am Selling Soul he kicks off with "I am the actual and factual supernatural sight and surrounds..."). Also, it feels kind of weird and awkward whenever he tries to get kind of sensual on here because of his allegations, it just rubs me the wrong way. Now, usually, only one of these things is bugging me at a time, but there are a couple of songs here that are, at times like *bad*. Some minor offenders include the off singing on Evening News, and the extremely obnoxious, blown out chorus on Scrap Metal. However, the worst song on here is *easily* Childz Play. I understand this is going for a particular tone, but it just isn't pulled off well, and I think it sounds *awful*. The like, toy store xylophone beat is grating and unnecessarily busy, and the effect is like jaw dropping, it's like circus music, I'm baffled. Then CeeLo comes in with mushy double-times for like the whole song, and he even hits what sounds like a Carol of the Bells interpolation in the chorus. Even more annoying, the Ludacris verse buried on this song is one of the very best verses on the entire album. He is charismatic and fun, and there's like a beautiful 30 seconds during his verse where the worst tendencies of the beat drop out and its like the only part of the album that I can just enjoy. Speaking of Ludacris, the other features on here are *all* better than CeeLo Green, with the notable exception of Timbaland, who starts his verse with "Here comes Timbaland, I'm also from the South" which is one of the most clunky, inelegant ways anyone could ever start a verse. This album's final crime is the 75 minute runtime, which is not warranted, especially after you realize that there are really only like two main types of songs here. Like I said, most of these songs aren't independently terrible, but as a whole, there is almost nothing here that I can just sit back and enjoy. While I am calibrating the lower end of my scale, I found this a *lot* less enjoyable than the 2s I've been giving, I think this may really get a 1 from me.
Garbage music by a garbage human being
Not a very good album. CLG has talent, but he does not exhibit much skill here. Give me F-You and Bright Lights, Bigger City on loop over this entire album.
I'm not really sure that you could call this soul music. I know what you could call it, but it ain't soul. The sort of thing that makes you cringe.
Soul machine my arse. Didn't really like or enjoy this at all. When it wasn't just annoying background noise and actively popped into my consciousness it was somehow even more annoying.
No love for rapists
I don’t mind some rap or hip-hop, some I have on my regular rotations - but this album isn’t and never will be. Just didn’t hit for me.
I'm not buying that this, in 2004, was influential.
Fuck you cee Lo
HipHop and Soul don't fuse well. Plain beats, vocals getting annoying very quickly especially when he tries sprechgesang.
Wasn't this guy a one hit wonder in 2010? Why is this here? This sounds like a record someone makes to make fun of Atlanta rap. I can't believe that's really his voice and not a humorous caricature he's adopting for some purpose. It seems I should accept it--and the GarageBand-tier loops--as genuine. All Day Love Affair is good, but only because it's a funk track. The rest of it is fucking annoying.
No
Does not happen often, but I literally despise this record. I cannot even explain how much I cannot stand this album. It is legitimately not a good record, and the praise it has received is a sin against music. The rhymes are silly, lazy, uninteresting, and worthless. The beats are repetitive, with hardly anything to maintain interest. Cee-Lo Green... is the Annoyance Machine. Not since Linkin Park, who is from the same era, has someone been this annoying. Everything about this record is built upon the backs of others, and it completely fails to deliver. It might be the most American thing ever.
Not for me.
The Machine broke down after about three tracks. Returning for a full refund.
# Album Name: Cee-Lo Green... Is The Soul Machine # Artist: Cee-Lo Green # Rating: 1/5 # Comments: Wow, that was awful. # Top Tunes: None. # Would I listen to it again? Hell no.
outrageous to say this guy is any kind of soul machine, but THE soul machine? get real. music: hated. (⌐■_■)
Not my vibe but I’m sure others enjoy it
Annoying. Distracting. Boring.
not a fan -
Maybe I just had a bad morning but I just couldn't with the voice...
I listened to this for maybe 15 minutes, which is maybe 15 minutes longer than it deserves. I don't know much about CLG, or how he 'became a musician' - but this record stinks of some dude that has loads of money, loads of connections and no material talent. I imagine plenty of other people realised that too, which is why he started recording under the Knarles Barkley name instead? Oh also he enjoys abusing women.
i don’t care i’m not listening to any more of this shit
its trashy, sounds like trash, and is just not good at all, noone needed to hear this in the year of our lord 2025. NNN
Kinda not my thing
No.
I struggled with this - it seems really kitsch and dated. My Kind of People is awful. I hate the sampling for Childz Play, but it has by far the best lyrics on the album. I Am Selling Soul makes him sound like a door-to-door salesman, the delivery is weird. His voice is too high for rapping, he sounds daft. The soul/funk elements are pretty crummy. I appreciate Gnarls Barkley, and his The Lady Killer album is a really decent effort, plenty of bangers, so he is a better singer than rapper. A disjointed review, like the album. Nope.
1+ Stars (3/15)
CeeLo Green is painfully NOT the soul machine. Never heard anybody call him that. CeeLo Green sounds like a cartoon character. I can't go into the content too much because it was either irrelevant or ridiculous and after the first 5 tracks I just skipped through the album. Musically, it's somewhere between rap and soul, but incredibly uninspired in both forms. There's nothing here that hasn't already been done way better. Be it beats, vocals, composition, ... The only special thing is CeeLo's voice, and I don't think it fits either rap or soul very well. Singing pop songs is where it's at.
Artiste inconnu. =>1/5
Never liked it
Got an album full of songs, and none are good… I’m like fuck youuu
Horrible album.
NOPE
Baaaaad
Wow, just waiting for each of these songs to be done.
Reminds me of Don bigg's 40 album. The voice was annoying and music sounds sooo dated didn't enjoy it at all
p898. 2004. 1.5 stars. Egotistical, misogynistic, foul mouthed crap. 20 years on and this already sounds dated. Bonus star for the classy horn section.
This stunk the place up. I have no idea why this is on the list, besides maybe it's the first one where I've heard an artist try to sound like half a dozen other people who have distinct styles are are more successful. Childz Play sounded like such an Eminem copy, even down to the skit feel. This was not good.
Big fan of the dirty south sound. Not so much a fan of Cee-Lo's voice or the man. Was nice hearing Timbaland and not the best Ludacris but nice to hear him too. His vocals are killing me. I'm trying but this is a struggle. Sorry, this isn't doing anything that makes it necessary to be here.
Nah im not a CeeLo fan apparently
This is a must listen to album? Can someone explain to me why?
Oh ... more Hip-Hop. 1/5
Saw the advisory sticker on the front cover so didn’t bother listening. (Well I did a bit to be true to the list but not pleasant) 1/5 8/9/24 250 up tomorrow, a quarter of the way through so hope the list comes up trumps 🤞
Asioita, joita ei ollut tarpeen kuulla. Asioita, joita en halua enää koskaan kuulla. Pettymys. EP?
Too many of the post-2000 album choices on this list are trash
I'd rather listen to the Goodie Mob while covering my drink than listen to this shit!
Boring and predictable trash 1
Krieg ich Durchfall davon.
Oh great, hip hop my favorite music genre (not) performed by a garbage human. Fantastic. Why is this on this (or any) list?
Cee how low you can go!!! I don't feel bad saying that after this terrible piece of work. Even the Timbaland song is bad. Go ahead invite your buddies to be on an album that's bad and make it worse. These songs were not written well. Cee Lo you had your fifteen mins of fame and it's gone ah roonie. And if those motel boxes are still a quarter that's a bargain!💯🤑
Starts badly when you have children talking on a recored. And, look, its not my genre and it doesn't have crazy on it so what more than 1 starwould you expect?
I am so mad that I'm getting dealt this annoying little's turd's album for my 1000th. Honestly, fuck this guy!! Homophobic, rapist piece of shit. Not giving him a dime of royalty today nor a minute of my time. I believe my 1-star rating is substantiated by the fact the Cee Lo has absolutely no talent whatsoever.
Potrebbe fare il doppiatore dei puffi..
I would give it 0 stars if that was an option.
No thanks.
This is shit. There’s no hook on any of these tracks, no soul, no innovation, nothing unique or special in any way. The lyrics sound like voicemails. 1/5
yeah i won't be listening to this
How generic hip hop should be. Boring. 1 stars
Nope
man is a creepy weirdo no thank you
Niet een vibe, maar sommigen waren oke
This is pretty good but CeeLo Green is a terrible person.
Ok
This is dross
His voice is the least soulful thing I can imagine. Like a Muppet
HipHop is not my genre
This felt like 80% noise, 20% music. Not sure how this could possibly qualify as top anything tbh.
I could quite happily never listen to this album again. Cee-all if you’re reading this it’s nothing personal bro. Just prefer your up tempo tunes
Dreadful
Not for me
That's gonna be a no from me.
Mag ich nicht.
Not my kind of style
This man’s voice is my personal hell. I do not want to hear him. Why would he choose a career in making sounds with his mouth??
I did not enjoy this album. Cee-Lo Green's vocals and most of the tracks could not grab my attention. For a soul album, there was barely any soul music. Even his rendition of "Let's Stay Together" with Pharell Williams was lacking. Overall this was pretty forgettable and I would not place it on my list of 1001 albums. Favorite Song(s): N/A
Bara skit. Hört bättre musik komma ut från min frus stjärt.
Terrible hated it
his voice sounds like a childs, which is probably on purpose because he gives off huge nonce vibes.
Shit
👎🏿
Not soul, just bad hiphop with a whiny voice. Terrible. Couldn't finish.
4 or so if the worst songs I’ve heard in a long time. Cee Lo’s voice is terrible. Not even timberland can give this a boost. Cee lo green is the Wilco of… something idgaf this stinks. It’s for idiots.
Hate his voice
That didn't age well.
Why?
Never knew the Gnarls Barkley singer had a solo career on the side. Wish I never knew, though. His high-pitched voice is grating, at least in this particular LP, his flow is annoying as hell, and the music is lackluster and devoid of anything remotely endearing (Timbaland and Neptunes/Pharell Williams contributions notwithsatnding). It's MOR neo-soul, which aged pretty horribly, to boot. Plus, the man himself seems to be kind of an ass. See the "controversies" part of his wikipedia page. Next please Number of albums left to review: 467 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 252. Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 124 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 158 (including this one)
Would have been an endurance test but thankfully it just faded into the background almost immediately once I stopped laughing at his voice. Generic. In the end I had to go out and life's too short so this is the first one of a few hundred I just binned off after about 5 shit tracks.
I would not listen to this again
Wait. Cee-Lo Green is a man, and Gnarls Barkley is a duo comprising Cee-Lo Green and another human man called Danger Mouse. I had no idea. I thought Cee-Lo and Gnarls were two similar, but separate, singers. There you go. You learn something new every day. As for this album, it contains neither of Cee-Lo/Gnarls' hit songs and is horribly generic. Just really, really bad hip hop and soul. Whilst Cee-Lo's voice is interesting for the odd song, it's crazy how annoying it gets after a whole album, rendering it almost unlistenable. 'Forget' you, Cee-Lo. Rating: 1/5 Playlist track: The Art of Noise Date listened: 29/05/23
It says "soul", but felt more like rap
Fuck this guy
Why Cee lo why did you do this 1/5
Hard pass
Why does it take 17 people to write each of these quite ordinary pop songs? Are they onto some song publishing scam? I'm surprised my name wasn't there, that I'd contributed a word to a song and jagged a song writing credit, maybe I did...maybe I didn't...there that's a C Lo lyric. The songs are ok, his voice the very definition of "limited" and its a hard listen over a whole album. This Bruno Mars universe, interesting. They've worked out a sound and a formula and they've plundered it to very good effect, hats off to them. Again, is this really something that needs to be listened to before I slip off this mortal coil? Oh, oh, oh, oh..shit... C Lo lyric (took 48 people to write that too). Where's Lemonade, when do we get to talk about that?
2004 mainstream rap. Tuhoon tuomita. Riisto suorittaa. Siunaus saada, hedelmä mätä. Objektia toteutuu.
Parental Lyrics advisory = 0 points Not wasting my time
Leuk, maar niet legendarisch leuk
I do not have it in me to waste a single second on this. On second thought...nope. Still not happening.
Some of the instrumentals and backing vocals were good! Nevertheless, I called it quits about halfway through the album. Wtf was Childz Play?? I'm confident that I didn't miss anything.
I was about to give this guy a 2 until I heard his "I don't fuck around" outro. Yeah, it's better to just know him for his Crazy single with Danger Mouse.
This really sucks. How is this on this list?
Total shit 1/5
Not my taste. Not a fan of the voice. Just not good
Nah I'm good. Dude's a creep.
Ekki minn tebolli. Frekar leiðigjarnt til lengdar.
This is the first and last time I hear this album.
Bleh. What a yomp that was. Another one of those 2000s albums that goes on forever and a day. That would be semi-okay if the material was decent, but it's not. In fact, this might be one of the most generic album I've heard yet. A couple of songs feature some quirky sounds, sometimes the rapping caught my attention for a nanosecond, and one track sounds like a slowed-down Steely Dan number. Aside from that, any impression Soul Machine left evaporated almost the moment it touched my cerebral cortex. Over an hour of fuck-all, sung in a voice that is grating as it is unwavering.
Nope. Can't make it through this one today. I made it to track number 5 and there are still 13 to go. I don't mind his singing voice, but I don't know how anyone could be drawn to his rapping voice. Oof.
You're fucking kidding. It's like a cross between annoying 00s rap and a sarcastic joke. 1/5.
Yawn.
I found this very boring...sorry Cee-Lo... you were boring.
Worst album so far, terrible.
Nope
Mehhhhh
For ever reason this album has just never worked for me. I remember being so surprised that it was as lauded as it was back on release. I enjoy Cee-los voice and his rapping, but the sounds just are interesting enough to me. 1.5/5
Most of the albums I’ve heard from this list I’ve understood why they were on it. However this one I just don’t get, it seems like a generic R&B/rap.
Na
yea... no....
Really poor and forgettable
Ar Soul
Took about 2 minutes before I turned this off
Had to stop in the middle... really not my style
I have respect for Cee Lo as a creator and producer, but I found this album too monotonal for my taste.
The best bit about this album is that Timbaland is on it and it reminded me of when I passed my driving test.
This was not good. It seemed pretty soulless. Also Mr Green appear to be not a good person.
Really doesn’t do it for me. Find his voice annoying, also don’t think it was very soul
Nope!! 1.1
Gross.
dontt like it
Tries to be cute, and has some boppy moments. But the singing is boring, the mix is mediocre, and the clean version on Tidal is annoying. Neptunes production that ends up being bad makes me sad, but it is what it is.
Yo cee-lo slaps I’m going to listen to all old cee-lo
