Dit album bracht ik exact wat ik ervan verwachte. Grunge, gemengd met wat punk en pop. De Cobain-invloed is inderdaad soms niet ver te zoeken. Goed album!
Loved this! As much as Courtney Love is a polarizing character you can’t deny their first few albums slapped. Very important contribution to grunge. Fave tracks: “Doll Parts” “Asking For It” “Jennifer’s Body”
I prefer my vocalists to be able to sing in tune. The pitiful vocals ruin these songs for me.

Composat en ple vincle matrimonial amb Cobain (hi ha qui diu que ell és gran protagonista de les lletres i melodies del disc), publicat entre la mort de Cobain i la de la baixista de la banda, amb un tema fantasma, ‘Rock Star’, enretirat en últim moment (no dels crèdits, però) per la seva fatídica predicció a les lletres… tenia tots els números per convertir-se en històric. I ho és. Pel seu misticisme i pel seu punch postgrunge, del millor que va donar el génere i que va fer de Courtney Love una rock star a tenir en compte. Perfil que confirmaria pocs anys després amb el també excel.lent ‘Celebrity Skin’

About time I listened to this. Courtney Love, infamous wife of Kurt Cobain (that some believe killed him(!)). I don't know about any of that jazz, but I do know that I enjoyed this album. It struck me immediately as a female-led Nirvana. Not in a bad way, as I don't think it's purely imitative, but it's got the same vibe. I understand why people speculate that Cobain ghostwrote some of this. I love the punk energy here, and it's very enjoyable with a female vocalist for a change. A good number of killer tracks on here (pardon the potential pun, I'm not a conspiracy theorist, I swear). I also love that there's a track called Jennifer's Body, which no doubt is where the movie got the title, because this music sounds EXACTLY like that movie and what the characters would listen to. I enjoyed it overall. It's on the edge between a 7 and 8 for me, but I'm feeling generous today so we'll round up. Favorite tracks: I Think That I Would Die, Jennifer's Body, Violet, Asking for It. Album art: Definitely iconic. I've seen this plenty of times, it really captures an essence so immediately. I think Courtney Love sued (or maybe just complained about) Olivia Rodrigo ripping this aesthetic for something she did this year. Wouldn't surprise me, given how brazenly Rodrigo wears her inspirations, but c'mon, you can't be shocked when you make something that looks and sounds so memorable. 4/5

A revered contribution to grunge and punk rock, Hole excels at capturing listeners' attention with 'Live Through This'. Courtney Love's rugged vocals is the key ingredient amongst crunch guitars and tasteful drum patterns in producing a generous serving of the punk rock spirit. This record is critically acclaimed for good reason - like the CHBs it manages to effortlessly present, in a complete package of both energetic and downtempo tracks.
I was actually pretty surprised I knew so many Hole songs. Very consistent sound, didn't feel much variation between tunes but it fits right in with the 90s grunge movement. Separating the music from the artist, overall it's a good album. Well put together, songs have good hooks, Courtney can belt. A bit angry which I can't get into at this stage in my life but I would have enjoyed before. She definitely cribbed some songwriting notes from Kurt, not that that's a bad thing.
Love the raw anger coursing through this. Makes me think of so many good nights out spent dancing to Doll Parts
Some good girl angst! Very of it's time but I enjoyed most of it, in difference to some other punk/grunge which I find too repetitive. My top pick is 'Doll Parts' but I also liked 'Jennifer's Body'.

I enjoyed the angry grunge for a bit, but it's all a bit facile and superficially teen angst, and made me wonder how much of being in a band like this is having the rock star image.
Didn't expect this as a must-listen. It took me back! 3 for the album, extra 1 for 90s nostalgia.

It felt like Grunge by numbers. Predominantly filler with the occassional lift. Treading well worn ground, but with a female viewpoint. I can see how it could inspire. By the end I'd warmed to it a touch otherwise it may have been a 2 star.
An album I never really listened to because I thought grunge was boring. I still think it's boring. I'd probably have appreciated this more if I was listening to it (a) played live (b) with an ear to the lyrics. But I wasn't, so I didn't.
Hole is 2/2. What a great rock band and what a fantastic voice! The raw power gets you going and you can right away see what the live experience would be like. I had a lot of fun with this one.

Might be a little harsh but as far as grunge albums go this one is pretty far down the list for me.
I’m a little ashamed that younger me had some sort of block in my head that convinced me that this band was lesser than the other similar bands I liked at the time and wasn’t worth checking out, because I love this now and I’m sure I would’ve then too.
I remember clearly how fashionable it was to hate on Courtney Love when she was in the spotlight in the 90s. I hate it when that happens; always seems to bring out the nastiness in society. That being said, I didn't listen to Hole back then because my interest in "grunge" was somewhat fleeting. There was some music in that broad category that I enjoyed, but after a few years I lost interest. I did my best, as I generally try to do with this interesting album-generator experiment, to clear my mind of the heavy biases and prejudices I knew I'd bring to my listening. It's pretty much impossible to fully erase expectations, at least for this flawed listener, so I admit I still expected on some level to dislike it. It's better than I thought it would be. I found the songs to be more melodic and layered than I expected (reading the Wikipedia article on it, that seems to have been quite intentional), the composition and performances are good, and my only main criticisms are (1) I don't always like Courtney Love's voice as the main vocalist. I'm not sure why because she can sing quite well. Just how I hear it, I guess, but I always have to allow for the possibility that my brain cannot separate the voice from the image of the person. (2) Many of the tracks sound too similar to each other. The album is not so compelling that I intend listening to it regularly, but for the most part it was enjoyable.

At the time, I thought this was over praised in the wake of Kurt Cobain's death. And somehow in 2020, this album went from being previously ranked 467 to 106 on Rolling Stone's Top 500 Greatest Albums List. I always wondered how this would have been received had it been released during Cobain's life instead. I like a lot of Hole's songs, including many on their follow up album. I'm not in the camp that suggests Cobain wrote most of these songs. Rather, I'm sure Kurt likely influenced and inspired Courtney Love. What ultimately matters is this is a great album. Unfortunately, listening to it reminds me that it was released one week after Cobain's death. It also brings back memories of rumors about Cobain and Hole bassist Kristen Pfaff carrying on an affair, and Pfaff dying two months after this album's release. And then I end up going down rabbit holes suggesting Love's involvement in her husband's demise. That's one slippery slope. I'll just focus on the fact that Courtney Love had a pretty good run while she was interested in the music more than the fame.
Wasn't expecting to like this too much but it was surprisingly entertaining. Was a little repetitive at points, but overall a good album. Very 90s. Very grunge.

Although I had heard a lot about Courtney Love through the years, I didn't realise she had her own band. Heavy grunge reminiscent of the 90s with a strong female empowerment/feminist overtone lyrically, that as a whole was often criticised and mocked for being whiny and overdramatic due to the 'Riot grrrl' movement, would resonate with audiences today. Best: Miss World; Jennifer's Body; Doll Parts; Gutless Worst: N/A

Superb female-fronted grunge/garage rock. Though the compositions tend to be repetitive, Love's take-no-prisoners energy makes each track its own inherent testament that needs to be heard until the end.

1st September 2021 Listened on my phone while working in the flat. Went to the theatre in the evening to watch constellations with Anna maxwell Martin and Chris o'dowd. Enjoyed the grungier, 90s aspects to this less so the punk rage but Courtney love undoubtedly a star.
This was one of my favourite albums as an angsty teenage girl. So there's a big slice of nostalgia going on for me. It's great though- angry, visceral, the themes and lyrics are sharp and raw and dark, melancholic. I loved listening to female hard rock growing up, mostly riot grrl and later 90s/00s punk, and I guess Hole were part of a pioneering movement of women bands, part of 3rd wave feminism that normalised rage and writing about female experiences. Thanks for that Hole. And of course lots of really catchy loud-quite-loud grunge Nirvana-formula songs, melodic but raw. Courtney's voice sounds a lot like Brody Dahl (or rather, the other way around). Favourites: She walks on me - verses especially are driving, noisy, punk Rock Star/Olympia - I WENT TO SCHOOOOOL Violet
Like the White Stripes, I definitely did not give this album its due respect when it came out. I had bias against Courtney Love pretty much my entire adolescence as she always seemed like bad news. Even when she broke through as an actress, I just had a bad sense of her. This album actually is as solid of an alternative rock record as anything else that arrived in the 90s including Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, or Green Day. There's a tragic personal depth to the album beyond the enjoyable riffs and rhythms. I can see how these relatable themes could be very valuable to coming of age audiences, especially young women.

After first having listened to Celebrity Skin, Live Through This sounds fairly similar, and is about as good. The main difference is that Live Through This sound more spiteful and angry, which does not always result in an enjoyable listening experience. In my opinion, Courtney is not a particularly compelling vocalist and Hole's best songs are the ones that stray the furthest from grunge and more towards formulaic catchy pop/rock-tunes. I honestly find very little to enjoy here, as I think Celebrity Skin is a superior record in almost every way. 2/5.
This is a hard one because knowing of the background of the band and all of the rumors about authorship it will probably bring it down a star more than it would be normally.

Aantal echt geweldige nummers, maar veel middelmaat. Blijft een beetje vreemd dat dit altijd als zo'n briljant stukje muziek wordt gezien. Komt toch vooral door haar partnerkeuze als je 't mij vraagt.
Openingsnummer heeft altijd diepe indruk gemaakt. Een bepaalde emotieve rauwheid. Ook Doll Parts vind ik sterk. Maar dat geldt voor mij helaas niet voor alle nummers. Daarom slechts 3 ipv 4 sterren
100% jeugdsentiment, en een van de platen die mijn muziekale smaak voor een heel aardig deel beïnvloed heeft. En nog altijd vind ik het erg tof om te horen.

Znači, očito sam postao neki njihov fan. Prvo sam poslušao Celebrity Skin koji mi je jako dobar, pa potom ovaj, i taman se eto našao i ovdje u 1001. album. Ovo mi je malo slabiji od Celebrity Skin, ali isto tako ima stvarno dobrih stvari, baš mi je drago da sam ih poslušao.

I'd never heard of Hole before this album - I started listening to it, and thought it sounding like Nirvana with a female vocalist. Then saw they were fronted by Courtney Love! Figures. Decent album
I've never listened to Hole. Courtney Love is a complicated and polarizing figure and for that reason I've never really had an interest in her music. I should've just listened. This is a monster of an album and grabbed me immediately with its punk and hardcore inspired grunge. It has memorable lyrics, great musicianship, all topped off with Courtney Love's incredible vocal delivery. Hole is supremely talented and after hearing this, much preferred to other grunge acts of the time. I'm glad I gave it a listen.
Sounds like a band you would hear playing a local bar. Overall very average, not sure why they got famous other bring pretty of the grunge wave.
Samma känslor som gjorde att jag gav Nirvanas "Nevermind" en 3:a. Grungen blir ibland lite högljudd och skrikig. Håller dock "Nevermind" något högre än det här. Fortfarande bra, och COOLT! Låttexterna och de teman som låtarna behandlar är väldigt mörka och drabbande. Bästa låt: I Think That I Would Die. Extra drabbande då den handlar om hur Courtney och Kurt tappade vårdnaden om sin dotter. Mellanspelet, "Rose white, rose red", är mer melodiskt och vackert, med nedtonat gitarrspelande, och en höjdpunkt på albumet. Doll Parts också bra.
Courtney love gets a bad rap. she was as damaged as Kurt by the time he died and in the wisdom of my years now unfairly blamed. this album is cool. very punk

I've only done 2 weeks into this 1001 album list and I've had 2 Hole albums. That's definitely 1 more Hole album than should be on a 'Best albums ever' type list and make me lose some respect for the author... Thankfully, this is their one really good album, mixing bitter emotions and lyric with some great songwriting and production that manages to walk the line between raw energy and polish.
At the time I was really impressed, but nowadays the weak vocals tend to annoy me a bit.
Oh shit this is Courtney Love yikes 😬 Nah not my thing, apparently this album was a bit more significant cus it was a prominent band with a woman as the lead which was rare at the time? Think it’s more of an American thing too. You can see how they’re similar to Nirvana. Not my kinda stuff.
I really hated this back when it came out, but it's always good to give something a fresh try with hopefully more mature ears :) .... ...but less than a minute into "Miss World" and I want to take some of those kill-me pills C Love is screaming about. Vocals rarely "make" an album/song for me but they do often destroy it and this is a great example of the latter. If you like this style of punk vocals or it simply doesn't bother you, you might really like this album - some of the music is aggressive in a quintessential early 90s fashion and there is some room for quality melodies. Obvious similarities to ~Smashing Pumpkins, Juliana Hatfield. I almost feel like there's little middle-ground here, and for me mostly because of vocals I can guarantee I'll wait at least 20 years to voluntarily listen to this again. 2/10
Another album I thought was pretty good, I listened t it on the side, nothing stood out for any reason
I feel super confused about this one, genuinely lost about how to rate it. One song I love and the next I don't. For the first time listening to these albums, I actually went back and re-listened to a few songs because at first listen I honestly could've rated this 2, 3 or 4. I still feel unsure, but I genuinely think I will come back to this one - there's something about it that makes me want to carry on listening.

This seems to be a very angry woman shouting over what is otherwise very standard and very mediocre garage rock for almost 40 minutes. I skipped the seconds halves of most songs, and stopped altogether after half the album. So luckily I didn't need to listen to it for 40 minutes.
Ich wollte es gerne mögen. Aber irgendwie, ist mir das zu krawallig - 1-2 Stücke in die Fre*** gern mal, aber am Stück nicht meins.
Krass, hätte nicht gedacht, dass mir die Musik von Courtney Love so gut gefällt. Und jetzt ist mir aufgefallen, dass Gwen Stefani den Stil voll von ihr geklaut hat. Oder war es doch anders herum?

All the songs sound the same.
I remember not liking Hole back in '94 but I was a delicate late bloomer, afraid of music that sounded angry and dangerous, and perhaps shouldered with some level of misogeny that teaches 90s boys that rock is for men. Most of this still remains true about me. But this isn't about me it's about Courtney Love. I will not mention her deceased husband. She's killing it on this album. Her voice sounds perfect. Catchy melodies over distorted guitar. Angry and dangerous. Sounding very authentic. Very fed up. Even on a peaceful breezy day some room has opened in my barricaded heart to let in the darkness. But not that much room. B-
Courtney love has quite the growl. The white trash-angst really comes through. Sonically this album is solid, good recording, not too dated, sine nice thrashing guitar. However, no melodies really stood out to me. I think Courtney love carries all the weight of this album on her shoulders with her voice and lyrics. Good. But could be better.
Pretty fun, Courtney's got great pipes. Not good enough to keep Kurt alive.

Enjoyed today’s album. Never really liked Hole, mainly because of Courtney Love, but when one of their big tunes come on I’m into it. Plus some decent Nirvana sounding album tracks on there too. Might just copy and paste that as my review tbh
Violet and Doll Parts are classic tracks, but I'm not sure I've ever listened to this album in full before. Not the biggest fan of Courtney Love but I enjoyed the album. Really powerful voice, catchy songs, loads of energy. Well-produced. Easy to compare to Nevermind in many ways. In fact, it is interesting that Kurt might have written some of the songs and that he features as backing vocalist on two tracks. I enjoyed this and I'd certainly revisit the big songs, but less sure about the album as a whole. 7/10

Alles drin, was (female) teenage angst beinhaltet und was den Rahmen fasst um die popkulturelle Auseinandersetzung von weiblichen Minderjährigen mit Selbstbild, Fremdwahrnehmung, Sexualität, Ansprüchen, Verfügbarkeitsmythen - musikalisch eingekleidet im alten "Gish" Fummel der frühen Pumpkins und doch stellenweise schon den großen "Malibu" Pop/Rock vorwegnehmend, der da noch kommen soll. Bei allem Hang zur rotzigen Punkrock Attitüde bleibt das alles vor allem eine Auseinandersetzung amerikanischer Prägung. Wenn in "Girl Interrupted" so absolute Hotties wie Winona Ryder und Angelina Jolie die "Durchgeknallten" mimen, so darf in der US Variante gesellschaftskritischer, Körperfetisch aufs Korn nehmenden Feminist Rocker nicht drunter gehen; Love, Auf der Maur und Co. könnten rein visuell der angeprangerten materialistischen Gefälligkeit kaum mehr entsprechen, und sprechen dann doch zu den pummeligen Outsidern. Femen-Rock quasi - der schöne Schwan predigt tönend dem Gefolge hässlicher Entlein. Und da ist echt nichts verwerflich, wenn schöne Menschen sich diesen Themen zuwenden - es bleibt jedoch ein Geschmäckle, wenn Barbie geköpft wird von einer kajalverschmierten Barbie mit Messer. Dennoch bin ich vollends überzeugt, denn in der Gänze sind Text zur Musik vor allem in der ersten Albumhälfte pures Gold. "Was she asking for it? Was she asking nice? Did she ask you for it? Did she ask you twice?" 4 Fragen, 1 Bild, stark, eindeutig, genial. "I'm miss world, somebody kill me Kill me pills" the pain of being what the world expects of you. "I'm eating you I'm overfed Your milk's in my mouth It makes me sick" The thin line between lust and disgust. Schon in der Schule (in Olympia, Washington) hat man´s gelernt: "Everyone's the same We look the same We talk the same yeah We even fuck the same" Hat alles für mich noch Gültigkeit - leider nach knapp 30 Jahren das Frauenbild und der sich daraus ergebene Konflikt - und auch musikalisch nicht so angestaubt wie manch männliche Kollegen dieser Zeit. stunned 4.2
Ist es ungerecht, wenn man bei Hole erstmal denkt "ach so ja, die Band von der Frau von Kurt Cobain". Man sagt bei Nirvana ja auch nicht "ach so, die Band von dem Ex von der von Bikini Kill". Naja, aber trotzdem ist Hole natürlich im Fahrwasser von Nirvana nach oben gespielt worden. Dem Sound (ich hatte ja neulich schon erwähnt, dass mir Dreck-Grunge immer lieber war als die poliertere Hardrockvariante) hört man ja auch deutlich die Verwandtheit an, z.B. wäre ich sehr leicht davon zu überzeugen dass Courtney und Kurt den selben Gesangslehrer hatten. Gefällt mir jedenfalls nicht schlecht, und auch ansonsten: solide Grunge-Platte, mit - wie soll man sagen - Glamour-Effekten. Aber einen weltweiten Teenage Riot hätten Hole damit vermutlich nicht ausgelöst, dafür waren sie 1994 bisschen spät dran. Und diese Routine im Sound und der Ästhetik hört man dem Album schon auch an. Trotzdem: solide 3 redlich verdient.

“Live Through This” by Hole (1994) Let me say at the outset that I don’t believe the rumor that Kurt Cobain ghostwrote tracks on this album. My reasons for this skepticism are probably not what you think. But there are striking similarities between Cobain’s compositional style and Cortney Love’s. How to account for this? She copied him, dude. Courtney Love is good, but she’s not in Cobain’s league. Now there’s nothing wrong with copying compositional style. Good grief, the history of recorded music demonstrates this over and over. But if the copying is accompanied by an insufficient level of innovation, the overall effect is unduly derivative, and thus is of less artistic merit. And Love’s compositions on this album are unduly derivative: Cobainesque screaming over Cobainesque barre chord progressions and intervals with Cobainesque dynamic explosions and Cobainesque blending of acoustic and electric rhythm grooves. I could go on. Love’s artistry is explicitly feminine. Cobain’s artistry transcends gender segmentation. I am aware of how some feminists would perhaps challenge this assessment, but I’m 66 years old, and I really don’t care. I don’t do affirmative action art. Now Love’s lyrics have some flashes of poetic microbrilliance (“violet/violence”; “death rattle/spittle on his bib”; “My bitter half has bitten me”; “I fake it so real, I am beyond fake”; “fetal stress/legless caress”). And in general, Love’s lyrics far surpass the average rock and roll fare. Her songs here are both introspective and relatable, plaintive and evocative, repulsive and attractive. The album has a thematic coherence, and production & performance qualities that are far better than average. It is just plain good. 3/5

It's very nice to listen to some clean and real raw rock album. It's not one of the best albums for me, but it's very honest.

Better than most other punk I've listened to. I think Courtney Love's vocals are quite good and the album is short enough not to overstay its welcome, but it definitely didn't stick in the same way other albums on this list have. 7

This album is definitely 1994. The music is fine but the vocals are borderline unlistenable in some songs. This album gets a solid \"meh\". A little bit good, some pretty bad, mostly very mediocre.

Proof that the last punk album that I rated wasn’t negative because it was a female vocalist. I think her style sounds way better than Cobain. All in all quite a good album for what it is. Not my genre, but still worth listening to.
slightly disappointed. majority of the songs just lacked substance and something special. I would have preferred if most songs had the same style as “She Walks On Me” which was strong. not bad not good?

I liked this better than I thought I would. Generally find grunge very hit or miss but this hits more often than not. Lyrics are pretty adolescent angsty fare though, while still ominously prefiguring the impending adjacent tragedy.

I don't really miss God, but I sure do miss Santa Claus. Similar to the first Hole record, this one was another banger. A little harder than the first record we listened to? I think I officially like Hole.

Like so many other albums I've listened to, the opener to this album, 'Violet', is arguably the best song on the album. Courtney Love's raw, savage energy and vocal performance is inspiring, her shouts of "Go on, take everything" chill-inducing. Fortunately, while 'Violet' is my favourite track on the album, it's far from the only good one. The album oscillates between higher intensity, punk-rock driven tracks ('She Walks on Me' being one of the heaviest) to more mellow, introspective tracks like 'Doll Parts'.

dope ass punk album
Imogen: A female-driven grunge and alternative rock album. Lyrically focuses on themes of feminism, motherhood and body image, but mocks, rather than conforms to, the 'riot grrl' scene of the 90s. I enjoyed the album, my favourite songs on it being 'Asking For It', 'Jennifer's Body', 'Rock Star' and 'Doll Parts.' And I've sort of struggled with what to rate it because I'd probably give it a 3.5. I admire what it does with giving the female response to the grunge scene, and lyrically is able to highlight women's issues in a way that feels still relevant without it feeling forced. That said, in its inability to cement it being a 4 star for me, I'm going to have to give Live Through This a 3.

I know the drama with Courtney, but not info to have a real opinion on that so putting aside personal stuff, I have to say I liked this album. Some of the songs blended together for me, but I'd listen again, so I have to give it a solid 4.
