Reviews (page 4 of 7)
I'm on the fence. It's a very good industrial metal album. But then again, it's industrial. That's not as bad as saying "This is the best polka album ever made", but it's a knock. The genre doesn't lend itself to making truly classic albums. There's a lot of quality here, and I briefly considered 4 stars, but... it's industrial. (I try to judge albums based on their quality and historical context, not just whether *I* liked it, but I stand by my comment that "industrial" is a knock on the album.) 3 stars.
First two tracks had me thinking I was going to love the whole album
Honestly, a pretty good metal album. 3.5/5
1 great song, a couple ok songs
i hated this less than i though i would.
Too much emo screaming for me.
Ironic that our 777th album is from the devil himself! I did not think we would get any Manson albums (maybe we did?) but this is one of the defining albums. I was never a huge Manson fan, and when you read the wiki on this above, you'll see why towards the bottom. All of those lies that were spread about him I believed and was sort of terrified of the band. That was until I heard "This is the New Shit" on a later album. The irony is that it sounds like Manson actually did some bad things unrelated to Satanism. Either way, Beautiful People was a good one, the rest didn't really register. Marilyn is an acquired taste, and even as I buzz through this album again to see if I just wasn't paying attention, I just don't connect as much to this work as say, Slipknot. When I look at the differences there, I think Manson had a shock factor gimmick, both in appearance and music. The songs are grotesque, auditorily and lyrically. Slipknot had some of that, but not to this degree. I listen to Slipknot to get pumped up, I don't get that feeling from Manson. I guess another way to put it: a Manson music video would be a grainy one of some guy who is analyzing all the tools in his workshop before choosing one and the camera pans and we find out that this is a serial killer toying with his victim. Slipknot would be a grainy video of someone looking at all their tools and then just grabbing a sledge hammer and smashing it into a wall. Similar in design, different in execution. I went to a Slipknot concert some years ago and Manson was the act before and they were very different then too. Manson was walking around on stilts while a cross or a bible was burning for all to see. Very shock and awe. The only thing like that for Slipknot was the drum set getting lifted into the air. Slipknot may have creepy masks, but Manson doesn't need a mask to be creepy.
It's the big freak himself. Marilyn Manson was never my bag, even before he was accused of all the awful stuff. Most of his music always struck me as shock value for shock's sake, like if you were a parent offended by his existence, you just fell for his bait. There's probably a song or two out there I'd remember, but none I recognized on here. A few tracks I liked, not necessarily something I'd seek out though. A pretty long album too, but conceptually it's pretty well tied together, I did like the little robotic AI voices that would appear sometimes in the ether. Decent album, though not really for me. Favorite tracks: The Beautiful People, Wormboy, Man That You Fear (yeah you wish). Album art: Creepy half-face on the right, some mathematical stuff going on everywhere else. It's a weird cover, not in a very memorable way though. Aside from his corpse-ified headshot, it's pretty tame. 3/5
Meno estremo dei testi, sicuramente
Marilyn Manson is an important figure in the music industry. He brought the hardcore, horrorcore metal into the mainstream. This album is a great example of this. At first I thought it would be just generic metal, but then I've heard some more ambitious rhythms. Overall I think the album got great impact on the next artists of horrorcore, not only metal. 3.5/5.
I love a good concept album, and this kills it, in that sense. But it goes a little too hard for me.
remember that rumor that MM got his bottom ribs removed so he could suck his own dick? crazy how every kid in school somehow talked about that
2.5
Considered as a three-disc epic, Antichrist Superstar has a vicious start, boring middle, and an adventurous, ultimately flailing conclusion. Sadly, the bloat is the longest bit. Trying hard often works for industrial music; Doesn't imply minutes of tape, necessarily.
Gave it a go, and musically it's OK. A few decent tracks with some filler. The band's image is bit over-the-top in an attempt to be objectionable and controversial, but each to their own I guess
pretty good
I never really Marilyn Manson, but I found this pretty good. It was a little bit too screamy for me, but good social commentary and "in-your-face-ness" with some really talented musicians.
Sigh. Right then best get this over with. Look I like metal, and I like NIN and Reznor's later production work, but I've always found Manson a bit much, too try-hard. Also he's rapey. And the Beautiful People was just a metal Adam Ant cover. It's decent though still, despite hearing it in clubs hundreds of times in my youth. I have to hand that to them. The 77 minute running time was another reason I was dreading this coming up. At least it's happening on a work day. 4 tracks in and if I'm honest there's not been a bad song, there's something to like in all of them - but I also don't really want to him wail on. I understand it's supposed to be a rock opera and a riff on The Wall (which I thought was mostly a bit poo) and that's all well and good but I'm not really that interested. It's just the posturing I guess, massively off-putting. I tuned in and out of course, I could swear he was screaming "you're a dirty dirty rascal" at one point (it turns out it was rock star, I prefer my version) Overall it was more enjoyable than I expected but I won't be back, so it's a 3.
Soft 3
90's edge has not aged well. There are a few really good songs on here, but most of it is forgetful and edgy for the sake of being edgy.
Alex was right, Marilyn Manson is the worst part of the album, did have some good jams I was vibing to.
The singles are good, MM can write music. But the rest of the album is miserably self indulgent.
Solid
okay, not as good as I remembered it. Weird political ideology.
I liked it more than I thought I would
Album 191 of 1001 Marilyn Manson Rating : 3 / 5 This was certainly better than I was expecting it to be. Still, just not really my thing. Well produced.
Very aggressive. Not sure if it's an album for me.
It's a good experiment that mixes the nu-metal stuff more excitingly than the others from the same period. Still, it's so repetitive (thematically and musically) that it becomes annoying in the half of the album.
Nuuuuuuuu Metalllllll. God damn Manson using the N word in '96? The Beautiful People is a banger. But the rest of this album is fucking tedious. The Reflecting God is okay, from like a doomer perspective.
Unique style.... Standouts: Beautiful People, Tourniquet Rating: 3/5
Certainly succeeds with its dark vibe, angry, moody, and aggressive. Though nothing is as catchy as Beautiful People, there are plenty of songs that have a cathartic anger (e.g. The Reflecting God, Tourniquet) that align well here. I can appreciate the style.
Not a fan, some of these were decent tunes though.
Surprisingly good musically
90's goth, but now from the perspective of 2023. Oh, the 90s. The decade that gave us so much for music also gave us Marilyn Manson. This album may as well be a NIN album, though - Its very clearly a Trent Reznor production, you can hear his footprint all over this. Theres some level of rear view perspective to be applied to the album's criticism of the hypocritical nature of the American religious community, and it turns out that MM was completely correct in their message - The fascist "christian" scumbags of america have done their level best to fuck everyone over in the name of their racist ideology. Anyway, its a decent album. Couple of good tracks, and the theme is solid. 3/5
Wasn't into it at the time but not as bad as I thought back in High School
Fucking yikes, but I guess that’s the point. He did what he wanted- make me think he’s unhinged. I get the anger. And it’s cool to rebel and stuff. But a white man dropping choice words is never kosher. Also fuck this guy. Rapist asshole. The music was fine. 3/5
Reading the background on this album, I'm reminded what a controversial figure Marilyn Manson was back in the 90s. Like seriously, he had religious groups picketing his shows. Everyone had something to say about this band. And although I always felt Manson's shtick was a pastiche of elements he lifted from much better artists and cranked to 11, none of it would have mattered if the music wasn't good. As albums go, both for its genre and the time in which it was made, it turns out this album is pretty solid. The structure, the musicianship, the packaging, it's all really cohesive and well done. Reading how hellish the recording sessions were, it's surprising the band was able to pull it off. That said, it's really not for everyone. This album has some raw, visceral energy that's pretty impressive. The band has a pretty harrowing industrial sound, with a creepy and unsettling vibe. The concept of the album is ambitious, something rare for the 90s. But the concept is not readily apparent if you're listening without any awareness of what the album is supposed to be about. Occasionally the imagery of the lyrics is striking, but maybe more often, the lyrics end up sounding clunky and nonsensical. Edgy for edginess' sake. Manson wastes a lot of energy going for dark and disturbing, but a lot of it ends up being tedious. Fave Songs: The Beautiful People; Cryptorchid, Irresponsible Hate Anthem, Minute of Decay
I didn't hate it, but not gonna set it aside to revisit. Feels like an attempt at going more extreme than specifically NiN, executed by someone much dumber than Trent Reznor. Looking into the Wikipedia **Political reaction** section, I guess its interesting that this is probably the millennial equivalent of like Kiss or something, where most of the appeal was probably very tied up in kids wanting to piss off their parents. In that sense, that Onion "Going Door to Door to Shock People" headline probably did *way* more to knock MM down a peg than any amount of congressional hearings
I’ll attempt to separate the art from the artist on this one, as I usually do for this list. Just because an artist was eventually found out to be a POS, it doesn’t mean their work never had influence. Take that with a grain of salt though, just my take on it. This is an interesting and heavy industrial metal rock opera with some excellent riffs, though I’m not that into screamed vocals generally. Trent Reznor produced some songs here, and I think generally from what I’ve heard by NIN, I’ll enjoy them more. Favourite: The Beautiful People
This is Trent Reznor produced so it’s got a good sound musically but he can’t sing. And he can’t write lyrics that mean anything. So by the time the 4th song came on I was done.
3.5
It's hard to hold two thoughts in one's mind when listening to Manson's music: excellent punk/metal/rage music, but performed by a misogynistic abuser. Hard to keep that out of the listen.
Musically it's ok nothing great but lyrics are pretty dumb for someone who tries that hard. Perfect music for early teens.
Yeah, we all get it. You're super edgy. You're the industrial equivalent to the drive time DJs saying things just to shock people. And your shock value is about as nuanced as the book report from your typical high school listener. That all said, I just don't hate it.
This is the only Manson album I ever owned and always loved it. If the whole album burned like the first two songs, this album would be epic. But it would need to be at least a half hour shorter. The album descends into a typical mid 90's sound for most of it's duration. There are a bunch of good tracks, but I don't think the whole album is really worth listening to.
Fitter, happier More productive Comfortable Not drinking too much Regular exercise at the gym (3 days a week) Getting on better with your associate employee contemporaries What MM wanted to accomplish with his persona was smart, it was edgy, it was perfect for its time. He knew what he was doing and with Trent Reznors help he became a really memorable figure. Everyone with braincells knew it was a character, but over time he became so fucked he became the villian in his own story. I mean when your idea of fun is inviting Andy Dick to your house and showing him your homemade snuff film under the guise of it being real to scare him, I can definitely get behind that. That's funny. But when your idea of fun turns into raping and torturing women, well then that becomes a problem doesn't it. For the MM character to work the man behind it HAD to be a good person. To absolutely drive the point home. But it didn't work out that way. As for the album, yeah it's just Trents magic mixed with the complete douchebag vocals and lyrics of from the king of house harkonnen himself. It's good and it works. I'd maybe possibly even give this a 4/5 but I'm not letting it go into my liked albums list. Definitely an album a lot of people will grow out of. It's the downward spiral but shittier. Score: 70. Art: 20 All your album art sucks bro
I enjoyed some of this but at a distance. I listened to a lot of it on headphones and I kept lowering the volume because it was hurting my ears, but then the lower volume just didn't feel right. It's abrasive music and I didn't enjoy it enough to go back for a repeat listen. But I see the appeal of Marilyn Manson. A lot of songs actually have pretty straightforward pop structures, just dressed up as hardcore punk and metal and industrial. There's a core of solid songwriting in the music. He can also really go full-out hardcore too. This is a huge album and I appreciate that he breaks it up into three segments. Still, I found myself slogging through the end. "Mister Superstar" stood out to me as an interesting one. It's a twisted satire about celebrity and fandom. The lyrics about doing anything for Mister Superstar also felt significant given Marilyn Manson's allegations of sexual abuse and power dynamics.
Actually pretty fun if you don't take it too seriously. Has a few standout tracks. Somewhere between a 3 and 4
Interesting, actually had a couple of alright songs
Some interesting bits, but too long for what it actually is. Knowing the character and his influence on music and culture in particular American, I understand that he is found in this book.
I think it's the kind of album that was really great and innovative when it came out, but that is now unfortunately uninteresting and outdated. A few great songs here and there, but I can't find any fun or emotions listening to that. A fair 3.
The Beautiful People is far and away the best song on here.
Quel personnage...
album is not bad but this guy sucks
Thought this album had a really strong start an whilst there's no songs I dislike, it doesn't maintain the initial highs. The opener is a banger and I proper like 'Tourniquet' and I have massive nostalgia for 'The Beautiful People' from watching WWF Raw back in the day. HolyWood remains my favourite Manson album
Not my sound generally but it was interesting to learn more about this guy and the concepts behind the album and what he is protesting. I think that had the album been shorter, it had potential for a 4. Best lyric “I wasn’t born with enough middle fingers”
Eh, I can see the appeal to some but really just not for me outside of a few glimmers of a fun vibe
Album is fine. Guy is not.
I tried to separate my listening experience from the 90s hype and controversy and the fact that Manson is actually a trash person and not just acting. This album is fine, some good tracks, and Manson isn't a great singer but has a unique style. In my opinion, the same songs are better when interpreted by other artists (ex. Tourniquet by Rasputina).
Weird album to come back too. Marilyn Manson both freaked me out and intrigued me in my teen years. The Beautiful People continues to be a solid driving rhythm with an interesting message. The rest of the album is weird and interesting. Might need to listen to it again to see if I can appreciate it or consider it an album from my youth that I no longer value.
An important album for alternative music but could be about a quarter the length shorter. Makes a statement but it really did NOT need to be an hour and 11 minute statement.
Pretty much exactly as I remember the experience upon buying it on CD, when it hits it hits perfectly, when it misses its booooooooring.
Antichrist Superstar is the second album by American rock band Marilyn Manson and is certified platinum. It is a gothic rock, industrial/alternative metal, political agenda rock opera concept album about a supernatural being who takes power from humanity in order to begin an apocalyptic event. The album was critically and commercially popular, and was credited with ending the domination of grunge music on the charts. Listeners were starved for something different with their rock music and they received it with this hellish, controversial, and otherworldly album. This is the first time I have listened to a Marilyn Manson album and it was as dark as I expected it to be. However, the music and lyrics were surprisingly good. I'm not usually a fan of metal, but I did enjoy this album.
You know, for 90s heavy rock, nu metal, grunge, gritty music, this album ain't half bad. Is it a masterpiece? Nope. Is it sorta dumb and silly? Yep. But, someone that dresses up and scares boomers about transgender people and atheism, because they are uncomfortable with differences in others ain't bad to me. It was fun to listen to. It’s way better than Korn. And, for commercial music, it actually says “fuck you” loudly. MM is more than likely a monster predator, so that’s bad. Yet, here I am agreeing with some of his easy, entry-level, punk lefty ethos. Good on ya metal Manson. Have a good day.
Surprisingly good but not the greatest!
This style is definitely "heavier" than my usual listening fare, but that's my personal preference. No doubt this is a talented band and front person. Interesting work on this album.
Angry dark album. Supposed to mark the end of the fun and all too brief grunge era. Recording marred by excessive drug use and guitar player quoting during session. The distorted vocals add a nice edge to the dark. Great guitar playing and use of feedback as an effect. Super crunchy guitars that are very prominent in the mix. The cover art, dissonance, and horror like mood of this album would have been nightmare fuel for me as a kid.
17-year-old me would have loved this album, which is ironic because despite my Static-X, Slipknot, NIN-loving teenage self, I never got into Marilyn Manson. I think I just thought his music was too much based on a schtick and not actually music. I guess in a way that's kind of right, but also wrong. Let me explain. Antichrist Superstar is an excellent industrial metal album of the mid to late 90s. I kept hearing Trent Reznor's influence throughout, so I wasn't surprised to see that he was a producer on this. But, to me at least, what's holding this album back from greatness is the vocals. I'm not saying this in light of Brian Warner's real-life creeper-ness. The songs are dark and disturbing, and not in a good way...more so it feels like it's for shock than anything else. And it worked. His persona is what made this album wildly successful. But it's also what turns me (and many others) off to this music. If this had been a Nine Inch Nails, Trent Reznor vocalized album, I'd probably be raving about it and giving it 5 stars. As it stands, its a middle-of-the-road albeit highly influential and noteworthy metal album.
Some bright moments but a lot of background music and some terrible lyrics. Suspect Trent has a lot to do with the bright points ...
Glam Goth.
five inch nails
Last a lot longer than I realised. Another of those that you look back at on Spotify thinking the album has finished and started another record.
Mostly non decent lyrics, but that's metal. Love beautiful people.
In high school, I remember thinking a lot of the crazy kids really liked Marilyn Manson. And then in college, I realized I kinda dug some of this music. And now as I'm a little older, I dig it let. But there are still a few songs here I can run to.
Fine
+++
tourniquet and the singles
Abbrassive industrial rock not too dissimilar to nine inch nails. I did enjoy this, but it could of been shorter. Favorites: "The Beautiful People", "Tourniquet", "Angel With The Scabbed Wings"
Just gonna start off by saying that Marilyn Manson scared the crap out of me as a kid, and to be quite honest, still kinda scares me today 😬 There is no doubt however that he is the master of heavy industrial/gothic rock/metal, and Antichrist Superstar is definitely up there. A horror filled concept outing that revolves around a supernatural being who seizes all power from humanity, driven by resentment, and despair, he uses this position to destroy the world. It can also be seen as a social critique, using this storyline as a metaphor for the perceived fascist elements of the conservative political movement and the Christian right in North America. (This is not the first album that I have listened to where themes that were relevant over 25-30 years ago are still very much in the forefront of the American people's minds.) Best: Beautiful People Worst: Tourniquet
🤫❌🚫
First things first... Awful human being. I suspect he'll go the same way as the Glitter Band in the next edition. But this album is actually enjoyable. The glam rock and budget edgelord NIN industrial stuff on it is very enjoyable. The more trad rock stuff is meh, and some of the lyrics are a bit yucky.
Pretty cool
Production on point. Some good industrial tracks in there but his singing style doesn't work for me.
Wasn't ecstatic to see this album, but always liked Beautiful People. There were a couple of other good tracks that I liked as well...but it kept going it seemed a little like an endless slog by last 3 tracks.
A Trent Reznor produced album can't be ignored, but MM goes get old for me on a cover to cover listen
Not sure what everyone is hating on. This record is fantastic. Giving it 3 instead of 4 just cause the stretch from "Little Horn" to "Mister Superstar" kinda sucks, but that's just a symptom of double album syndrome. It's supposed to be a rock opera, but the story isn't told as well as Tommy or American Idiot, so you have little idea what's going on unless you listen to it a million times and think about the lyrics. Other than that, there are so many amazing tracks. Starts off with a banger, "Irresponsible Hate Anthem" reminds me of hardcore Nirvana and Rage Against The Machine. Followed up by arguably his most famous song "The Beautiful People." Two tracks later is "Tourniquet" which is really melodic and dramatic, a favorite of mine, and I really like the accompanying video. His music videos are the best. As said, the next 5 songs are weak enough to reduce its score, but there are some notable ideas, like the dystopian future sounds of "Cryptorchid," like a grimier Blade Runner. Industrial sound very heavy in "Deformography," which brings up a point that this album is a gateway for youngsters to get into heavier industrial or metal music. It can be seen as a stepping stone, and that's a reason why it's not looked upon fondly, but despite all it's a remarkable blend of pop and industrial that no one else has done as well, or as accessible to a mainstream listener. There's no repetition in any of these tracks, they're all very different in style and technique, giving the audience plenty to taste and pick their favorites. Album picks up with "Angel with the Scabbard." From here on, the tracks feel less pop-oriented and more mature. The songwriting is still primitive; you could tell he's just writing whatever comes to his mind, and he's definitely looking for that shock factor. "He is the raper" wow didn't see that coming sigh. But the structure is poetic and fitting to his aggression and heavy wall of sound. If you only half pay attention to the lyrics, it's a much better experience. I love the transitions in these later songs. So smooth into "Kinderfield," which is kinda a filler but necessary breather before (again a smooth ass transition to) the highlight title track. It's the most coherent and well-polished track for sure. "1996" is a decent filler, I like the aggression but doesn't have much going for it. What cements me really enjoying the album are these last 3 tracks. The production and vocals are so perfect, which is a coherent progression to the climax, that an album consisting of tracks just like these 3 would deserve a perfect score. "The Reflecting God" is my other favorite. I'm obsessed with the sporadic buildup that stops spontaneously only to come back out of nowhere, divulging into the bittersweet closer "Man That You Fear." His best record? Probably not, his next two albums might compete for that title. His most iconic? For sure, it popularized industrial, inspiring many artists to take up the genre, and many more to become fans. I might skip the middle tracks (screw double albums), but I'll definitely be playing this album again.
Only listened to like two songs whoops
more like mari-CRINGE monroe, amirite? pretty fun record tho
This album got pretty repetitive, but overall it's ok. Only one song I really liked on it, but it never got grating. I think this would have appealed to me more in my younger, more angsty days.
Good album made by a bad human being.
Sick nasty nasty
Dennoch durchschnittlich 2.5
Better than I thought, similar to rob zombie
Could not be less my thing, but it's a decent example of what it is.
Not for me
Liking this more than I thought I would. Cathartic to hear this kind of demented anger. This is another 90's album that I found scary when I first heard it as a young teen, and now it sounds kind of good and kind of stupid. But this beats Korn.
Though I would never deliberately put this on, I didn't hate this as much as I thought I would. However, I must admit, I did listen to this in a private session so it wouldn't mess with my algorithm. Like many albums of this era, it is far too long, and the dark tone of the album becomes exhausting. Their general sound/message is one I hardly ever find myself in the mood for but I understand the appeal.
Some cool sounds on this album for sure. Lyrics are pretty shock-value but, I'm conflicted on them. Cryptorchild is pretty good actually, was not expecting a Mellotron on this album either. I am not sure their usage of "nigger" and "rape" are proper, they are not glorifying those terms but it's always feels a bit exploitive when a white man uses those terms. I mean, from what I can tell he has some racist/sexist comments... yeah. Regardless, musically I don't mind it really, he was most likely playing the media like a fiddle and completely becoming the persona his haters described him as.
Never really listened to Marilyn Manson before - probably too creeped out. Maybe if I'd got past that as an impressionable teen I would've really bought into the whole package, image & disturbing lyrics and all, but that ship has long sailed. Having said that, strip away the shock and the music's pretty good. Some angsty heavy rock anthems but also a few surprising left-turns and inventive sounds (thanks Trent Reznor, I guess?) 3.5
3.5 stars. Love the concept, and there are some good songs for me. I think it’s too industrial for my taste though
I listened to this years and years ago. It's been a minute since I've spent any time with MM. Let's see how it goes... later... Well, heart rate is up, and I'm suddenly angry with my keyboard. So, MM has not changed much since I used to listen. I'm going to cherry pick the rest of this record for old times and then file it away for a few more years.
Like the music but the lyrics seem forced on some songs. Huge fan of beautiful people. It's like he's trying to find the tool/nin edge but I don't think it's coming from a genuine place.
I like the music, but can't really stand Manson and his religious/political views.
Important album in that period. Though I love hard rock and most metal genres, I never was much into Marilyn Manson. Saw him a couple of time live, but the dancers were more impressive than Marilyn himself.
I know and like some of the songs already so 3 for nostalgia, pretty ok otherwise
I was going into this expecting to absolutely hate it, and while I did, I actually found some songs that were pretty good. Very surprised with my final rating.
Gotta be in the mood for this one.
Pretty neutral on this album. Listening to this was actually a blast from the past though, so that was interesting!
3 1/2 hate the cunt but is was pretty good
Surprised I don't hate it.
Some really good songs. Music to sit at the front of the city hall to.
Not as good as Mechanical Animals
Decent enough but too long for what it is
Worse than I remember
Bättre än vad man tror!
Alice Cooper wannabe
Oh to have heard this when I was 12 years old, when this wasn't overly edgy and Manson himself wasn't known to be a fucking creep.
Had some great moments. But a lot of duds too.
Its Marylin Manson. 'nuff said. I think a lot of the initial shock of who he is has worn off, kind of like how Metallica used to be the end all be all most evil band. There is always someone new to push the envelope and Manson was it. Take away the theatric that come with his act though and its a pretty run of the mill rock album.
Honestly much better than I expected. I had always thought more energy went into his image than his music from songs here and there.
Heard enough in the first 1 minute. I did some research and I came to a conclusion that I don´t want support this person by listening to this album. I like this type of music but I just don´t want to support yk :)))
There were some songs I liked musically but I just can't get over the lyrics
It's not available on Spotify and I do not care enough to seek it out elsewhere - I dislike the songs I know and I'm unlikely to enjoy the rest. This dude is a monster. Bye.
Was never a fan of Manson back in the day. He was a bit too creepy for me, too twisted and I don’t really enjoy much about him. The Beautiful People was the saving grace and only cause of its use in WWE in the late 90s/early 00s
It’s not good but it’s not as bad as I was expecting
I try to make my reviews unbiased, but it becomes hard to separate the art from the artist when the art seems to reflect the artist so much. The vocals were irritating. More gimmicky than creepy. There were some cool instrumentals, but a lot of it also felt shallow. Gross album cover. Manson was kinda ahead of his time for getting into crypto during the 90s though ("Cryptorchid"). The best track was "Deformography".
Not a fan. Not quite industrial enough, poppy.
Too long and Manson is too rapey.
It's really hard to seperate the art from the artist with Marilyn Manson.
no es música que me guste escuchar
I coulda died without hearing this. Pretty sure this album has already failed the test of time and we're not that far in.
I usually separate the art from the artist but this dude is so full of himself I can't stand it.
Before having to listen to this album, my experience with Marilyn Manson was basically as many other people: only listened to "The Beautiful People" and "Sweet Dreams". I also saw him life, but I can't really remember how it sounded. Nowadays, with all the stuff that has being revealed about him, I feel glad I never decided to dig his discography, Not that I was really interested in the first place, with now feeling even less interested. I think is important I mention this because I'm pretty sure the lack of interest has impacted my opinion negatively. Alright, let's talk about the record. I basically think it is a lackluster version of "The Downward Spiral" by Nine Inch Nails, a comparison that it is unavoidable to make due to Trent Reznor being directly involved in the production of this album. Not only the album feels like a imitation of another one, but also I find it to be very lame. Except from some decent riffs and energetic tracks, like "Irresponsible Hate Anthem", "The Beautiful People", "Little Horn" or "1996", most of the material here I think is boring, specially the middle part. There is no energy, no true emotion, no super twisted or super dark industrial aesthetics, no catchy elements... it is bland. The only thing I can say about the album is that it is provocatively disturbing. There are a lot of slurs, hate, macabre and disgusting narrated scenes. All these aspects add to create a shock value element that tries to be a critique but ends up feeling pretentious edginess with no real direction. The cake on the top is this thing being 1 hour and 11 minutes long, getting a bit tedious. So, between its length, the tame composition, the edginess and me not being interested on what this artist does, I can't say I liked this. Not even Trent Reznor's distinct production can save this.
As seems to be the case with a lot of this “type” of music, the musicianship is excellent and the singing is fucking awful!
An excellent example of marketing outpacing actual artistic ability. Beautiful people is a tune and the drummer is great, otherwise fairly stand heavy late nineties music
I have never really enjoyed nor understood. Marilyn Manson as a touchstone in Rock. I went to see nine inch nails in 94 and he was an opener along with Jim Rose circus. I loved both the other acts but I just sort of felt like his brand of music was shocked for the sake of shock? He himself seems quite contemplative. I think for him this sort of expression is a means to a paycheck. I don't think there's anything wrong with that and clearly people enjoy it. It's well made. It's a product. I don't particularly enjoy it. There's stuff like Mr. Bungle Out there in the world. That occupies the same territory, but does it in a way that is truly challenging and creative and sort of mind-boggling. Same statements made. More musical complexity. Probably more edgy if that's what you're trying to buy. Definitely more poetic. If you like this album, go try Mr. Bungle's California as a soft on-ramp to that weird world.
one song…
I thought I would hate this. Instead I only disliked it! Nice.
Never been a Marilyn Manson fan really but know the "hits". I think fight song was the best of these, but it's not here! Coincidentally I went down a bit of a columbine rabbit hole yesterday and Marilyn popped up. Ridiculous that the media tried to say music had a role, think he came off quite well from that..... Although in more recent years his reputation seems to have taken a nose dive. I think his whole schtick is just to try and shock, can't say I've ever found it that shocking. Musically, it's ok, not really my thing. Was quite enjoying it initially, but I started getting bored. Tourniquet was decent enough. Beautiful people never did much for me Somewhere around 2.5
I didn’t hate this but I didn’t really like it. Some great sounds but the Mansonness of the whole thing overshadows all of it. Would be interested in hearing a version of this without the Marilyn Manson voice effects. You can really hear the Trent Reznor influence on a couple tracks too!
Has its moments but far too long
Some this is OK. A lot of filler. Siouxsie and the Banshees cover of Helter Skelter is better.
I remember liking some Marilyn Manson singles when I was 15, but never wanted to listen to an entire album of it, because it would feel exhausting. This is one of the incredibly rare times where current me agrees with 15-year-old me. Listening to an entire album was a sonic pummeling that I could do without. And the highlight is by far the lead off single "The Beautiful People," which is so much better than every other track on here combined. Overall the music doesn't feel very dynamic, but it's still pretty decent industrial rock (presumably the influence of album co-producer Trent Reznor) but the vocals are the weak link. I'm also mostly trying to separate the art from the artist while I'm listening and reviewing these albums, but I'm still docking it a point because Manson himself is an abusive POS.
It's not a phase, Mom! DID YOU REMEMBER THAT THERE WERE SEVERAL RACIAL EPITHETS IN THE FIRST TRACK?? I didn't. Well, the school shooter scapegoat album rears it's ugly head and reminds me the hold that edginess had on the youth of yesteryear. Whilst it's now cool to be aloof and unbothered, there was a time where being the most bothered about everything was rad as hell. I'm talkin' clips of fights set to "Angel with the Scabbed Wings." Just imagine Monday Night Raw opening with "The Beautiful People." The wrestling intro song is really where this album is best, and the rest of the time it's trying far too hard. I mean there was the aforementioned N-word. Still can't believe that one. This isn't a horrific album, but it's so very dated, and unfortunately played no small part in the neural development of the boys who have now grown up to say things like "well BIOLOGICALLY you're a woman so." I actually have just enough middle fingers for my rating here. Take two of these and call me in the morning. 2 HIGHLIGHTS: Could it be that GUNS cause school shootings???? That can't be it. I'm concerned it's the makeup man.
Beautiful people still class. Otherwise mostly missable
5/10 Best songs: Cryptorchild, Mister Superstar Honestly? This album is better than I was expecting. It's cohesive, has some interesting songs, and the screaming is not as overwhelming as I'd expected. That being said, I think a lot of these songs could have been significantly improved if sung in a different way, or with different music. I suppose I'm thinking of this a little strangely - I've been listening to Rasputina's cover of Tourniquet for decades now, and their approach is far more mellow, less metal, and thus (?) much more interesting. By comparison, the Marilyn Manson version has instruments that overwhelm the vocals, and the screaming detracts from the meaning of the song. I feel like this is representative of much of the album - there's something there, but the musical choices let it down. I would also be remiss not to mention that several of the songs contain slurs. While the performative hate (towards others as well as himself) is Manson's whole shtick, I always deduct a star or two for slurs. I suppose it's "less bad" in this context because, well, we expect that kind of thing from Marilyn fuckin' Manson, but I just can't support that kind of thing. (Also, Manson is a trash human, so he doesn't deserve a rating higher than this.)
Screw this guy, hate his music... ok, I guess I've heard worse
No thank you
Njet
Not as relentlessly horrible as expected, just mostly. Some songs are quite listenable, but overall really not for me. 2
# Playlist Track - The Beautiful People # Notes - Never was much of a Marilyn Manson fan, and also don't really enjoy industrial metal, so it shouldn't be a surprise that I didn't really enjoy re-listening to this. On my years it aged really poorly. - From the lame cover to the overly worked sound it all screams "I'M EDGY" to my 40-year old ears.
Bäst är Beutiful people, Antichrist superstar, 1996, Minute of decay och The reflecting God.
Even before the allegations, I think my attitude towards Marilyn Manson was shaped by that Onion 'Marilyn Manson now going door to door trying to shock people' story. If you take away the controversy-baiting stuff, this is kind of repetitive.
Edgeslop. Whatever accurate social commentary Manson has here is lost on how awful he sounds and how crude and immature his lyrics are. The Beautiful People goes kinda hard tho.
I think it would be fair to call this the worst Nine Inch Nails album. There is no reason for this album to be 71 minutes, especially when the first song is about twice as long as it needs to be. It has a sound that's built on solid ground, but it never does anything more than that. Every time I think it might do something, it just leaves the moment alone and either belabors it or moves on to the next thing without any exploration. Manson's voice is so often overwrought to the edge of intelligibility and sometimes seems like he's borrowing from Mr. Korn Jonathan Davis himself (not a compliment). I want this to be better. I think there's something here. But this isn't it. Of course, in the hands of someone more interested in exploring this concept album and less in making as shocking a concept album as possible, it would fundamentally not sound like this. As it is, wasted opportunity that's just some moderately heavy industrial rock that's dressed up in outrage bait.
Just way too long for what it is, this album became a real slog. I started off liking how different it is from others on the list, and if you cut this album in half, it'd be higher. 75 minutes of screaming tends to just blend into itself, and boy did the songs blend together, especially in the second half. Not my usual genre, sure, but I find with long albums there better be a good reason for it and there most certainly was not one for this. Yikes
This album is way too long and the music isn't very good, but for kickstarting the post-grunge late 90's/early 2000's alt metal scene I can understand its influence. That said, I think its significance lies with a select few songs and not the album as a whole, and for that I don't feel it deserves to be included in this list or deserves much respect on the whole.
I'm learning to respect what they do musically, but I just can't get into it
I never really liked Marilyn Manson. I appreciate the influence he had on shock rock, but I never liked him. He is a bit too obnoxious, like I cringe when I see him or when I read the lyrics. I like The Beautiful People though. For that reason only I give this a 2.
I really feel disappointed to anyone who has to listen to this album. This just sucks and takes all the ehhhh elements of metal and puts it with a guy who lowkey makes me uncomfortable.
This album really gives me the creeps. I don't know much about the guy, but I wouldn't want to hang around him. I wouldn't trust people who listen to him either. Other than that, it's bad but not really bad. His voice is terrible, but the rest of it is just fine metal stuff. Still a creep though.
268/1089 weirdo, boo tomato tomato The Beautiful People is iconic of course it’s just difficult to listen to this kind of “evil” concept album when you know that the artist is pretty nasty irl stuck it out through the whole thing, it does have some cool moments sonically but it just blended together for me, i’m not the target audience and it went on for so long 29/100
This is not something I’d be in a hurry to return to
Try hard music.
Uninteresting
I was surprised by this album. I fully expected to hate it, maybe even DNF it. I'm not generally a fan of screamo rock. However, this was a tolerable listen. I think a lot of that lends itself to the production by NIN's Trent Reznor. I am still not a huge fan of Marilyn Manson's vocals, but it's okay when backed by NIN instrumentals.
Man, this sounded a lot better when I was 14 years old and full of bitterness towards the world. Just doesn't hit the same as an optimistic 20-something. God lives rent free in Marilyn Manson and Glenn Benton's heads.
Lemme start by forgetting what a POS this guy is. The sonic style of the album is quite good to my ears. I love Nine Inch Nails and Rage Against the Machine so the industrial funk metal sound is up my alley. The lyrical content is extremely cringe, and the songwriting is a bit shit. Pile on top of this that Marilyn Manson isn’t just putting on “creepy weirdo” as a character, he really is one! This album is not good and I would not recommend, but if I’m being honest I did vibe with it.
Ok
Oh yay another problematic dude to rate. Even if I could separate art from artist, this is unpleasant vocally. Musically ok. Just too much shrieking for me.
My sommelier recommended the wrong Monster pairing for this album and it threw off the whole vibe :( +1 for the single track
I didn't like Marilyn Manson back in the late 90s and ... everything since ... has not helped.
Physically groaned when this popped up this morning. Not an album I know well but one I did listen to at the time, mainly because my mate was a big fan. He even dragged me to a gig in (I think) 97, the day after i'd been to a Korn gig and bruised my ribs being pressed up against the front railings. To be fair, it was entertaining. Anyway, sufficed to say that I wasn't a huge fan at the time and the subsequent years and allegations of him being a fucking terrible human being have not warmed me to him or them any further and I probably haven't listened to this or virtually any MM since the 90s. So to now and to be fair, the first few songs are decent. Beyond that, and to be honest including that, musically-speaking, this is just NIN-lite. Unsurprising given that Reznor produced it, although really it has little of the production craft that I associate with him and much more just the raw aesthetic. He also has 3 writing credits and Twiggy Ramirez has said he would often ask for his input as "the only other string musician" in the studio. Manson's part in this is just to shock. His vocals aren't the worst I've heard but they're all pretty much the same, either doing that low talking thing or the screaming thing. After the first few songs, it has a few moments but overall it becomes a slog and it's way too long!
4/10
I feel like Korn had to be influenced by this. Not bad but pretty dated.
There’s a couple decent tracks and the variety of styles is impressive, but ultimately the majority of this album is edgy teenager fodder with no substance beyond “me angy”
nothing new everything borrowed from other. better. artists
I always think of Evan Rachel Wood when Marilyn Manson comes up. Very unfair that people as evil as Brian Warner can have such successful careers. May he burn in hell. As for the music I made it through 5 songs. Not as insufferable as I thought it would be, but if I wanted to listen to this type of music.. like.. The Downward Spiral is right there.
Needs another listen
The first 2 or 3 tracks had some redeeming qualities but it just got shittier and shittier from there. Repetitive and samey by the end, overly-affected and theatrical, some annoying riffs that go on too long. I liked this when I was 14, and I think that remains about the right fan demographic.
71 minutes? That roughly 70 too many for this drivel.
There is one song that I know, and kind of don't hate actually, but the rest of the songs are a bit too intense, so it's not really my type of daily enjoyment music. Overall, it's manageable, but a bit meh for me.
one good song and the rest pretty much sucks
Heavy, broody rock
There's definitely a mood here, just not one I'm looking for.
This review is just on the album as presented and doesn't take into account that he's a piece of shit The album is fine but pretty one-note. Definitely only 1 properly good song on here.
Manson is a piece of shit and this isn't even one of his better albums. One extra star because Beautiful People is still great
Overall decent metal, but "decent" does not justify a full 72 minute CD. If half and hour was cut off of this, it would be an easy 3 star, but I feel like it just isn't all that great.
Mwuah
Really only one song that was worthy of mention...."Beautiful People."
Not for me
Not my jam
Meh not for me
I bought this album when it came out and I remember thinking to myself that I am buying this to laugh at it later. Clearly I didn't listen to it though because I barely remember any of these songs. I think somewhere in the middle of making this album he forgot he was a kitsch clown making a parody of the most kitsch musical and fully believed he was Marilyn Manson, and never came back. just completely full of himself. Which is too bad, because there is a whole lot of queer coded messages in this album and even more so on his next album. If he wasn't such a shit head this could have easily been rediscovered as camp. but he fucked that up
Too eccentric
Yeah... not my cup of tea.. I couldn't get in the spirit of the album 2/5
I remember in the second year of uni in the UK Manson was suddenly everywhere: in the music press, on TV. I didn't like his shtick, I thought he was just a weirdo edgelord. Then after Columbine he became the bete noire of the Christian right and came across quite eloquently in the Michael Moore film, I thought maybe I had misjudged him and he was actually a champion of free speech. Time has ultimately shown I was right first time, and listening to this album, it's really not good. Torniquet and Man That You Fear were actually ok, but it's most just a pathetic NIN knock off.
This is corny. It should be discarded in a closet in 1996 like a pair of JNCOs just back from Ozzfest that are super wet on the bottom and stink like weed and wet denim.
I’ve never listened to an album by them and I really wanted to like this but it wasn’t that good of a first time listen for me. I think this album may not have stood the test of time very well. It probably sounded somewhat fresh back then but listening to it now it just sounds kind of annoying in its simplicity. I’ve always found most industrial music to be somewhat lacking after Ministry and Nine Inch Nails. It’s as if the parameters of that style of music was very limited and all the great ideas were dealt with in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. If you were a teenager when this came out back then it probably would have meant a lot and probably would have helped get one through some hard times but hopefully you worked your way back to earlier examples of the genre and found the real great albums of this style.
Yeah, this hits worse now that I'm not a wannabe edgy teenager
Pretty intense. Some dope lyrics tho, too evil for my liking lol
Looking back on Manson's pseudo-intellectual posing during his media appearances in the wake of the Columbine massacre and the subsequent backlash against his music, Manson seems to have seen himself as presenting a critique or satire of America's post-Cold War unreflecting belief in its own virtue while it simultaneously celebrated loveless sex and hateful violence. While Manson became the boogeyman of politicians and parents, he was creating his own boogeymen of the NRA and the Christian Right. Of course, he was just as much a part of the cultural nexus as they were, just as much mindlessly enamored of his own virtue even while contributing to a culture of nihilism. Manson wasn't a parody, holding up a mirror, he WAS the mirror--the other side of the same coin, to mix metaphors. He was right about them, but they were also right about him. They belonged together.
Cringe
Not my cup of tea. Frankly kind of offensive. But I appreciate it for what it is. Assumed it would be a 1, but it's a high 2.
I kinda liked it? Beautiful People is a banger. The rest is quintessential 90's sound. I get it. Don't love it. Kinda like it on the background of the gym maybe. Not sure why this is conflicting. Its a 2. Moving on.
by the end of it i was so tired. 2/5
Interesting for sure, not for me. 4.1/10
Eeeeee, Fuck this dude. 1.9
this was not for me, some songs were alright but most of this was just weird
The man himself is trash. The album itself is well produced. The music itself is metal/rock. I dislike metal. I appreciate the production for it's influence at the time. I dislike the man.
A few of the artists I listen to are influenced by Marilyn Manson but I've never been able to get into him
A lot of the lyrics are interesting, and the music is okay, but the vocals become grating on my ears mostly because the album is too long. 2 stars or D+.
If Manson was really Kevin Arnold’s best friend I’d have given this 5!
I expected to hate this album but I didn't. Admittedly, it is too long and vocals and lyrics are often ridicolous, let alone the album's "concept". (Which is appropriate to a ludicrous clown such as MM.) However, the industrial vibes (I guess to be ascribed to Trent Reznor's production) are not that bad...
Harsh and Abrasive, in both music and lyrics. I appreciate the art of it, but I don't find it very fun to listen to. That being said, Manson's vocals were a highlight for me, mostly because he actually sings and doesn't just scream like other metal artists. Standout Tracks: Wormboy, Angle With Scabbed Wings.
"['Antichrist Superstar' is] about me growing up and wanting to become something that people would adore, instead I grew up and became something that people hated." - Marilyn Manson I've said it once, twice and many more times, and I'll keep saying it: I review music, not people. Sure, sure, how you feel about an artist will no doubt impact how you feel about their work, but I try not to turn these reviews into "GRRRR, I HATE THIS PERSON SO MUCH" rants. It's not something I've been perfect about (see my "review" of 'The College Dropout'), but dang it, I try. Marilyn Manson (the man, not the band) would be such an easy guy to do this with. I don't know all of the details, except that he's a creep and an abuser — and, frankly, those alone should be enough to write him off entirely. Y'know, whatever sort of impact he may have had back in the day, is it really worth keeping him around? And I'm not even exactly sure **what** his impact was, besides being blamed for the Columbine massacre. I guess he might've brought shock rock to a new generation, but Alice Cooper he sure ain't! (Musically, anyway; Alice Cooper ain't an abuser, but I haven't heard many other good things about him lately.) All the same, though, Alice Cooper still made "School's Out" and a lot of other great hard rock. There's a reason people keep his work around. And, I mean, that's the thing, right? Bad and awful people have made great art that's worth keeping around. It's an unfortunate fact of life, but a fact nonetheless. It's like, even Kanye West, who's a black shit awful human being, made 'Graduation'. I can see keeping some of his work around, even if the man himself should be left to infamy and obscurity. Marilyn, though? I mean, what's his art? 'Antichrist Superstar'? Is that album worth it? Speaking strictly about the album itself, as best as I can: nah. I don't think it is. The thing about 'Antichrist Superstar' is that I can tell how hard it's trying. It is trying **so hard** to be threatening and creepy and disturbing and scary and, y'know, **cool**. "Lookit me! I'm calling my album '**Antichrist** Superstar'! I'm quoting Nietzsche! I'm being so cynical about humanity! Aren't I just **cool**?" And it's like, no. No. You are not as cool as you think you are. I mean, maybe I would've bought into all of this if I was 15 and this was 1996, but I'm not and it isn't, so quite frankly ... y'know. Part of my frustration here lies in the fact that this is supposed to be a concept album and a rock opera. And I just feel like, when you're telling a story, you need to be clear about what's going on — or at least, you need to leave enough hints that the audience can get it. Lookit something like 'The Wall', or even 'Tommy'. I get what's happening in those, even if there is some stuff, particularly in 'Tommy', that's pretty vague. Here, though? I had to jump to a fan wiki to find out what the plot was supposed to be, and even then I still had to make large leaps to cover up the holes. It just wasn't worth it to me. It's like ... y'know, there's a difference between Green Day's '21st Century Breakdown' and this album. In both cases, they're supposed to be rock operas, but I'ven't the faintest idea what's supposed to be happening in either. Fanmade summaries only do so much to help. But '21st Century Breakdown' at least has the musical chops to make up for any weakness in its "plot." 'Antichrist Superstar' doesn't. (And to say as well: when Billie Joe Armstrong uses the "N"-word on '21st Century Breakdown', I don't like it and I'd've rather he didn't and I am not defending it whatsoever, but I can **sort of** rationalize it based on the surrounding context. On 'Antichrist Superstar', it sounds like edgy white boy shit, plain and simple. And "edgy white boy shit" feels like how I'd describe a lot of the lyrics on this thing.) But the music, though. I figured I should like this well enough. Y'know, industrial has never exactly been my thing, but, hey, as long as it strikes the right chord ... I mean, I have always liked "The Beautiful People", so as long as it holds up to that standard, everything should be fine, right? Nope. Honestly, it makes me wish I'd listened better to 'The Downward Spiral'. Like, the music is obviously the best part about this album, and even that can't save. Sure, it's good to start, yeah. But as I would further and further down this 71 minute album, I began to tune it further and further out. It just wasn't consistently interesting enough to grip me. This clearly is **not** Trent Reznor on his A-game, my goodness. Maybe more his B- or, heck, C-game. And you put it together with the lyrics, and the "cool groaning and moaning" way Marilyn sings it all ... urrrrgghhh. Yeah, in the end, even if I was somehow able to put aside the fact that Marilyn Manson is an abuser, I still wouldn't have enjoyed this album too much. It's too long and it's trying too hard, despite the fact that it can't muster up enough interesting shit to cover its ambitions. I just picture Marilyn smirking in the studio, thinking about how **blown away** everyone is going to be by his **cool concept album** and how **scary and shocking** it is. But, me, I'm just left here stone-faced. And I think the worst thing here is that there **is** something I honestly could've connected with. From what I've read, there's a big theme about facism being apparent in conservative America and the Christian right, and ... I mean, yeah. Yeah. It's 2025, and it's not just apparent; it's a fact. If there's any time this album should be resonating, it's not. And yet, do I really wanna hear it from **THIS FUCKIN' GUY??** I don't think so. Well, you **did** become something people hated, Marilyn. You sure got that right.
This just feels like a poor man's Downward Spiral, and not just because I dig NIИ a whole lot. It's also because it just feels like he's overdoing it on the edge. 2.5 bumped down to 2.
Way too long
I didn’t expect to enjoy this so i was quite surprised i found the first half of the album ok. It’s fairly light enjoyable industrial rock. That said the length of the album and similar music throughout meant my enjoyment waned quite quickly and from there it was a bit of a slog. Would’ve been a far better album if trimmed to half the length
I am not a Marilyn Manson fan but I understand that his music is well crafted. I also understand why it has been linked to many murder cases and school shootings. There is nothing really bad about the album qualitywise but I do feel like you have to be a little messed-up to truly enjoy this
Couple big hits and a shit load of songs that sound exactly the same. The original edgelord. Never been by kind of music and it still isn’t. I feel like the fanbase of ICP and Manson have a big overlap. 4/10
First time ever listening to MM. Not as bad as I thought it was going to be. Only had to fast forward through 3 songs of shrieking, mainly because my own throat was getting sore just listening to it.
Var nú aldrei mikið fyrir Manson. Sjokker að hann sé creep. Beautiful People hefur verið á lista hjá mér fyrir lappadaga en get ekki sagt að önnur lög plötunnar hafi heillað mig mikið. Frekar mikið edgelord kjaftæði.
Should you separate art and artist? Sure, 4 for art and 1 for artist, rounded to 2 because reasons. This project afforded me an excuse for listening to The Beautiful People again, and the album definitely hits for me. But even without the extremely problematic artist this isn't perfect.
I understand why it’s here, but I don’t care for this music.
puuuuuuh medium lust nöd nur weg ihm als person sondern die paar wenige lieder wo ich vo ihm mal ghört han, hani recht lame gfunde NEIIII s erste lieder findi no hard😭😭 besutiful people isch easy I guess? dried up... isch öppe das woni vo ihne kenn, nüt für mich ah hä ich han iwie im chopf gha, dass er definitiv verurteilt worde isch hm cryptorchid hani na funny gfunde? industrial rock isch rifach sooo nöd mis wormboy het öppis im ahsatz öppis woni no cool find aber es isch denn doch relativ wenig mister superstar findi eig no cool, eifach z lang spinn ich oder het antichrist superstar basically kei bass/tüffene? ultra nervig bro langsam gsehnis nümme MINUTE OF DECAY BANGER SORRY au wennsmer weh tuet die bassline und das creepy klavier, sehr cool HALLOOO CHANS MAL UUFHÖRE bin vo paarne lieder eig positiv überrascht gsi. aber es isch würkli nöd mis
Too much of the death metal voice and weird music and lyrics.
The lyrics on Antichrist Superstar aren't really my thing, but the music's got that 90s industrial-on-hard-rock-rails vibe that can be enjoyable if you're in the mood for it. This is my first introduction to an actual Marilyn Manson album and, outside of the lyrical content, my chief complaint is its length. Much too long for anyone other than the fans. Turns what could be tolerable into an intolerable chore. It's interesting how there are music-listening experiences that convert listeners to fans, and then there are other records that really seem for the extant fan only. Unfortunately, there's no way to reliably determine which is which since it's such a subjective matter of taste, though I do appreciate the Recommended If You Like approach, and for this we'll give it a try: early NIN, Ministry's 90s output, Rammenstein, and Front 242 — all of which also do this thing better than Marilyn Manson.
i'd be a lot more ok with this album if it was half as long. I'm trying to cook dinner, I don't need an endurance test
I recognize the importance they have had for the rock scene, but I don't enjoy their music.
Manson could never decide whether he wanted to be Trent Reznor or Rob Zombie. He's a poor pastiche of something but he doesn't come close to either of those. This gained an extra point for some catchy drumming here and there but I can't see this as anything but a novelty act. A housemate once brought a goth girl home, they went into his room and she played Beautiful People on repeat for two hours then went home. It was very amusing. This album leaves me as dissatisfied as he was that night.
Beautiful People is good, otherwise nothing to recommend this. Also insanely long.

Style and volume over substance
...
If you like heavy music with dissonant guitar, you'll probably like this album. But if you're less enraptured by it, or are more picky about it, you'll likely find it to be a slog. This is 70 minutes of industrial chug, and while there are a few atmospheric tracks it mainly just comes at you with a bunch of rock songs. And there's so much happening in those songs. I like dissonant, industrial sounds when the music really focuses on them and you can appreciate their tones. But the amount of layers on these songs makes them sound muddy, and they start to bleed together. Some songs like "Wormboy" have a guitar that's really clear, but those are the exception. I do think the themes on this album are interesting, and maybe even more relevant today, but the lyrics are vague enough that it often just comes off as generally angry without anything too insightful to say.

I liked it more than I thought I would. That said, I thought I would would completely hate it, and I only mostly hated it. 2 stars, but toeing that 1 star line.
I didn’t enjoy Marilyn Manson when he first came out and I don’t enjoy him now. It always seemed like shock for shocks sake and nothing real behind it.
seems like the vibe id like but maybe not
Not great.
Of all the metal albums in the world this one somehow made it to this list (probably because of the controversy surrounding it). While it has good moments, the album is too long and too obviously campy and try-hard to be enjoyable. 1.5/5.0: Bad
i did not expect to like this as much as i did. overall i thought most of the songs well performed and well produced. that said, the songs arent good enough to warrant the runtime. the fact that manson is apparently a terrible person and the repeated use of slurs in the opening track dont help. realistically if you cut a few songs this couldve been a 4 but as it stands its a 3 with a point knocked off for personal antics.
I enjoyed the wikipedia page about this album more than I enjoyed the album. 1.5
2/5
I listened to Beautiful People then stopped.
I was always kind of scared of Marilyn Manson. I wouldn't say this was a pleasant experience, but I also wouldn't say it was insufferable. Sometimes you gotta lean into your antichrist ways.
I didn't hate this but I have no desire to ever hear it again. Once is enough. 2/5.
This is one of those albums where the persona/vibe/genre is so off-putting that I can't rate it high, even if the music itself might otherwise be a 3.
Men bättre än Metallica i alla fall. Svagare 2a går du leta efter.
Loses one star for being a trash person, loses another star for being AN HOUR AND TWELVE MINUTES LONG.
I really don't think this is *that* bad, and there are a handful of good moments on this album. But overall, it really wasn't very fun to listen to.
Aha, the guy playing the creep character who turned out to be a super creep in real life, who would have thought!? Alright, let's do it. Antichrist Superstar is a wild ride in 2025. Right off the first track my thought was "Damn he's trying so hard to be edgy." Did we really fall for this back in the 90s? I guess so. The whole album is a slog to listen to now and the act is washed up and tired. Its a bit of a shame, I generally like the industrial/electronic sound but goddamn Manson is just so unlikeable. I was never a depressed angsty teen, so the lyrics are super cringy to me but I like the sound, minus his creaky croaky voice, which is not good by any means, but put him on the map. Guitars are nice and heavy, a lot of the ambient electronic effects could probably have stood to be edited down or out a bit. Standout tracks were "The Beautiful People" - Stockholm Syndrom from rock radio jamming this down our throats for decades still has me kinda liking it - "Mister Superstar," and "The Reflecting God" - I listened to the whole song and I didn't want to kill myself! Take that, Committee on Government Affairs! My summary: Antichrist Superstar did not age well. It's really goddamn long. Some of the music is cool sounding, but some of it also sucks and along with the over-the-top pissy, angsty, "I am become death!" lyrics makes this a pretty unpleasant listen in this day and age. Can't deny Manson's cultural impact though and he hit the nail on the head with some of his political views. It gets a 2/5 from me and I'm content to leave this album in the past.

Having not listened that much to Mr. Manson, I understand that he is quite a famous, and ostensible succesful, person, who's been around for quite some time. I'm sure this is someones jam completely, but it ain't mine. This overall feels way to distorted and screamy for my taste. 'Beautiful People' has a cool hypnotic rhythm to it, but other than that I had a hard time finding interesting melodies to latch onto on this album, sadly. Not my jam, but probably someone else's.
Teenage angst without any real substance, only shock value. Got tired of the lyrics after about 2 minutes. The music isn’t great but if feels better than Slipknot which is the closest I can compare it too. “The beautiful people” is a bop with it’s catchy drum beat and guitar riff. The rest I don’t have much respect for. I guess it could be worse. It has no business being as long as it is either. Weak 2.
Favorite Track: The Beautiful People
The Beautiful People var litt kul da.
This guy provides a soundtrack, IMO, for the fans of Slasher/Horror movies. Ooh, scary.
Wanted to like this more but it was way too hard metal for me. A blast to the past though!
This was ok. At over an hour long, it certainly lost steam around the half hour mark for me. Some really good parts, coupled with some obvious cringe. I thought I heard some NIN influence in the music and it turns out Reznor was involved in the production, so… Better than I thought it would be.
I never got Marilyn Manson's appeal.
Rating: 2.4 He just doesn’t have it, this type of thing should have died in the womb but his edgy ass fans have drug (no pun intended) it out for THIRTY YEARS.
Gratuitous, on the nose, but overall a very interesting album.
It started OK, then got less good as the album went on.
This was extremely boring, there were only like 2 or 3 good songs, nothing bad though really but it's all the same
Great album to remind me that I respect industrial rock much more than I want to listen to it all the time. Deducted a star because fuck Manson.
hearing the first track and realizing that he was saying the n-word was wild work lmao. in all honesty I hate that I do like the general sound of it but I feel like that is more due to Reznor than anything else. Much like Eminem, Manson relies so heavily on being edgy for attention because there's not much else to him.
Some good riffs sometimes. The vocals are often too monotone for my tastes.
It's long, and it's bad, and it made my head hurt. It barely escapes a 1, honestly. I wasn't alive in that decade, so some of the cultural significance is lost on me, but I'd probably like it less anyway hehe.
I haven't heard this style of music much. It comes across almost as novelty, but at least it's pretty unfamiliar (and therefore interesting). I really hope nobody took Marilyn Manson, as a band, seriously. But then they're tackling some pretty serious topics. Autocracy, violence, the religious right... and they do it in this stupid horror-theme tone that really takes away from the message. Even punk delivers its message better than whatever this oddity is. And, being as recent as 1996, I don't really think this is really a successful attempt to "shock your way into the mainstream" (as another reviewer wrote). Nothing about this is shocking for its time. It comes across as a bit cheesy, or maybe insincere. (That being said, Tourniquet has a stronger delivery and manages to climb out of the cheese rut.) And yet some of the lyrics could actually be really dangerous for impressionable teens. Something about this whole combination doesn't sit right with me. Right up front, Warner's vocal delivery doesn't do it for me. In Irresponsible Hate Anthem, he alternates between a creepy, deliberately "weird" whisper and a sketchy metal scream. I say sketchy because his voice manages to be somewhat raw yet completely lacking in the genuinely anger and energy that the "metal greats" tend to channel. Deformography and Man That You Fear are both equally weak tracks for this reason. The Beautiful People is immediately stronger for a few reasons. The lower-energy vocals are actually fairly catchy, and the guitar part is significantly more interesting. Everything is loud, brash, and... well, spooky. The band's original name (Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids) makes perfect sense. The delivery of the track title in The Beautiful People is just perfect for an zombie-ghost anthem blasted in some decrepit mansion somewhere. The riffs are pretty strong (at least when they aren't drowned out by other elements) such as in Little Horn, Wormboy, Angel With The Scabbed Wings, and The Reflecting God. But those riffs don't exist in a vacuum. 2/5 Key tracks: The Beautiful People, Tourniquet, The Reflecting God
No es para mi
The lady doth protest too much, methinks
Meh
Banger of the album: The Beautiful People An odd album that reminds me of being a kid but doesn't have enough nostalgia to carry it to a higher score.
An edgy sex addict and alleged offender, he writes like he thinks abuse is bad while clearly fetishizing it. The contradiction drags the whole album down. There are a few decent moments, but they’re buried under self-indulgence and hypocrisy. I can’t give this more than 2 stars. 5/10.
Liked mildly only 1 song - the rest was unbearable. Manson wants to be edgy so bad. Don't understand the appeal. Props to you if ya like it. I don't
I have always thought of Marilyn Manson as a publicity stunt - the shock value diverting my attention from the quality of the music. And as a rule, I don't like metal rock operas - they are typically overly serious and dark. But there were a few tracks here that appealed to me - essentially, the album wasn't as bad as I thought it might be.
This isn’t an endorsement but it wasn’t nearly as bad as I expected. The writing was, dare I say, good? Still not really planning on diving back in though
17 songs of over-dramatic screaming negativity.
