Reviews (page 7 of 7)

I feel like I've already listened to every Nick Drake and Tim Buckley record so when another pops up I'm always surprised. Not a huge fan of the psyche elements on this one, felt a bit carny. Not the first Buckley record I'd reach for.

How is this on here ?

Ok, but boring

Tim Buckley says hello and I say goodbye, not really super into this

This has some very good but also a lot of very annoying parts

While it's moer palettable then 'Greetings from LA' the gist of it is the same. It has some decent sounds but also a lot of whiney annoying parts.

I feel so bad but I really don’t get folk rock and that 60s folksy stuff. It reminds me of Godspell and pretentious people. But Tim has a really good voice especially hitting the high notes it’s like two different people singing. No song stood out to me but it was nice to hear in the background.

Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Yeah it’s decent, nothing mind-blowing but rather soothing and gentle which is always a welcome break Favourite song: Track 3 - Pleasant Street

Very underwhelming.

Bruuf 2

Decent album. Nothing stuck with me but it was pleasant while playing. Tim has a wide back catalog so I'm sure I'll come across him again.

This was a weird ass album. It’s only memorable because of the distinctive effeminate voice and it was occasionally interesting but was mostly irritating

Felt like this album was a bit dull and Buckley voice felt weird. Often times I felt like his voice was sounding feminine. It isn’t anything more than a 60s folk album. None of the songs really grabbed me. Not much worth re listening to. 3.6/10

Nah, sorry Tim. Reminded me of too many open mic nights I've sat through where people play seemingly endless stream of consciousness songs that just waffle on and were obviously inspired by listening to this.

I Never Asked to Be Your Mountain is a standout track. It shows how damn good Buckley's dramaticism can be if done well. Unfortunately, I feel like a lot of this album is held back by sub-par songs that don't play too well to Buckley's strengths. I'm often rolling my eyes are the cheesiness of compositions combined with Buckley's performances. This includes the album's namesake 8-minute song that is not all that good.

Meni taustalla ihan huomaamatta 3-4 kertaa ympäri. Ei voi sen perusteella kyllä kehua.

Ok but won’t listen again. Just a bit non-descript…

still not super impressed, got through half

The worse Buckley

2/10 worse buckley

very ballady some Americana mixed in 2.5

Too folksy for me, I'm sorry. Hell of a voice though, he sounds great in both the quiet parts and the loud parts. Very emotive too. Turns out that he's the dad of one Jeff Buckley, so talent runs in the family it seems! I thought Once I Was & Phantasmagoria in Two were pretty good, though not enough to add them to regular rotation.

Tried to enjoy the "folksy" song writing, but it was often too discordant to enjoy (looking at you Carnival Song). A couple good songs saved this from being 1 star.

You can see where Jeff Buckley picked up some stuff from his dad, but I definitely prefer Buckley the younger. Nothing memorable for me on this.

If I were to say to a musician for a film, give me that generic 60s folk rock sound, this is exactly it. I should like it more than I do , but I kinda don't. I did like Pleasant Street but the rest is just not landing with me.

This was not for me. It sounded like some Renaissance fair King Arthur mumbo-jumbo.

there were parts that i thought were mediocre but then others that just infuriates me… the okay parts weren’t good enough to change my perspective on the album as a whole.

a.k.a. Jeff's dad. is that why this is on the list? If the name were Tim Johnson would this even be remembered? I don't hate it, I just don't really connect with it overall - I will say that "Phantasmagoria In Two" is unique and "Pleasant Street" is a cool-enough song that is (as is everything else) very of-the-era. The rest seems to blend into the "oh this is clearly of the late 60s" sound - this may be unfair as there are a few sorta-unique/odd songs (e.g. "Goodbye and Hello") but at the same time they don't grab me - i.e. I don't know if I'll remember much from it. 4/10 2 stars.

Versatile voice, but I’m indifferent to the folky pop music. Not for me.

It had it's moments. I just generally don't care for this style of music.

I only like one song of Tim Buckley's and it's called Song For A Siren. I like it because it has a lovely melody/imagery and because he played it live during the last minutes of the last episode of the Monkees. His voice just bothers me but I guess Micky must have really liked him. As for this album, it's ok -but for the voice! Just find it a bit annoying!

Strange and I suppose unique, this just wasn't for me. I thought it would be a solid 3, but then I got to 'Knight-Errant' and the sound of the song made me realize how much this album put me off. Wish I could have enjoyed this more.

njae det flyger inte riktigt

60's psychedelic swirly tunes with the elder Buckley intoning oh-so-earnest twaddle in a Kermit + vibrato-everything voice. I'll take the son's tunes over this stuff any day.

I can appreciate his voice, no doubt, but it's actually a little too operatic for my tastes. Musically and lyrically, this album is very much a reflection of the time in which it was created. A lot of music is like that, I know; on a personal preference level, this style of music just doesn't reach me so much.

2/5 well, nope

The songs are competent enough here, but there is something about his style of singing (similar to many of his late 60s/early 70s contemporaries) that puts me off. Despite the strength of some of these songs, I cannot really listen to this for any length of time. 2/5

This sound wasn’t for me.

woooaaah duuude. mellow out maaaan and stop being such a square. weirdly depressing for something that sounds all flower power. must have had a few too many bad trips.

Just a bit shit in the end

Not great. Very 60s

I didn't know Tim Buckley. He is not bad but I prefer others artists.

2nd listen. 2/5.

Goodbye Tim Buckley.

it's not hip hippie happening

A voice like a fraying rubber band across pseudo-psychedelic folk rock. I'm sure it all means something, I'm just not sure what. Best Tracks: Pleasant Street; I Never Asked To Be Your Mountain; Once I Was

The father of Jeff Buckley. I read that he only met his father Tim once. I usually enjoy psychedelic folk, but this album didn't really hit for me. I liked so many of the ideas, lyrical and musical, but I was left wanting more follow through on some of those ideas. I might need to give this one another try, but first listen didn't stick with me.

Meh...

Interesting album, its pretty good. I dont know if he has a female sing on some of his songs but if not his falsetto is amazing. his tone reminds me of Roy Orbison in the lower register.

Hadden we deze niet al geluisterd?

Borning

Interesting sound…. OK

This had potential but felt too all over the place and the music didn’t really do it for me!

Better than I thought, but a bit wierd

wont search it out very folky, bit too much for me but not terrible

60s Folk with some experimental psychedelic sounds. It was okay.

Decent but not for me

Lots of other stuff kind of like this that I like better or am more familiar with.

The Sgt. Peppers influence is all over this album. I'm not a fan of the experimental folksy lovey-dovey folk sound of Tim Buckley so this doesn't ring to well for me.

Like the old-school vibes, don’t like his voice

I'm liking the radio music that Spotify plays after the album more than the album

This is basically the record that is being made fun of when movies like Spinal Tap reference schlocky 60's records with a high pitched singer over folk rock.

Didn't like it as much as Happy Sad. A bit too much 60s folk rock in this list...

Although I do like a few Tim Buckley tracks a full album of his is hard going. Pleasant Street was decent but too much introspective folky stuff on this for my liking.

Can't remember much from Friday

This guy again? Really? Sounds like someone force-fed him Jethro Tull and a lute.

I had to check to see if this guy was Tiny Tim - turns out he isn't. Very high voice though. Sounds a little like Cher. Favorite song on here IS Pleasant street. He did seem to be ahead of his time a little on that one, but it's a voice only a mother could love. I would be embarrassed to listen to this with someone else though, so only 2 stars.

Love the lyrics and the story telling, not a huge fan of the music. But not bad!

Parts of it were interesting. Tried to listen to it twice.

I like Tim but this was not my fave

his voice is incredible but i couldn’t really get into it otherwise, a few nice tracks but otherwise i wouldn’t come back.

Boring folk music. Not a fan.

What exactly is that in his eye on the cover? Is that like one of those jeweler’s magnifiers for looking at diamonds or what the hell’s going on there? Regardless, I enjoyed some of the songs here and merely listened to others. “Once I Was” is the winner for me, but mostly I found myself thinking about how this combination of folk and rock probably made him super popular with a certain type of woman in the 1960s. And look at those teeth! I bet he never left a party alone.

I liked this album, it reminds me a bit of Cat Stevens in lyrics, and a voice a bit like Don McLean, but doesnt do either of those very good.. nothing jumped out at me as being great, but my favorite song was definitely "Pleasant Street" Worst one was "Morning Glory".

not for me

It was fine. I liked the strangeness, but Tim’s vocals were folky.

If only the tunes lived up to the smile and the barnet.

Not really my style. I didn't really enjoy this one.

Really like his voice, just didn't like the album

Maybe I’m just in a bad mood but this record is boring, forgettable, and I feel like this list has generated a bunch of these. Hopefully tomorrow is better, this week has been pretty meh

Not for me at all.

Storytelling, god sangskriver, stemningsfyldt, kærlighed, 60’er, Singer/songwriter

boring and kinda sad.

3 albums that are all the same? Why?

Soft singing, guitar strumming. The word "troubadour" came up in another review, and that's what he reminds me of, some guy hanging around a party singing and serenading everyone else without being asked to. The lyrics (although not the singing) also remind me of Bob Dylan in the way they are exhaustingly and heavy-handedly symbolic, the final two tracks especially, which lost this album a star and were like listening to something medieval, in that it felt like the singer was from a completely different culture where all his references were completely lost on me and it was a tiring struggle to comprehend for little reward.

This sounds so, so, so "of it's time". It almost feels offensive not to be wearing a flower crown and fringed waistcoat while listening to it. When he attempted to hit the high notes in Carnival Song it was almost painful to listen to, but by Pleasant Street it almost sounded like a completely different (and much better) vocalist. That continues throughout the album. "I love her upstairs, I love her downstairs" made me start sniggering. It sounded like a lyric Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer would have written for a skit in the mid-90s. This wasn't really my thing, but there was the odd glimmer of stuff I enjoyed. More a 1.5 really, but it's getting a 1/5

Holy shit this was not good. Can’t get over how bad this dude is. Definitely that dude in college who would play his guitar to get ladies

this album sucks! 1 star

109 albums in and this is, by far, the worst of the lot so far. Painful.

About 700 albums ago, I had to listen to this record's successor, Happy Sad. Well, as I can't go below the 1 star I gave that record...

I'll take bad bookstore music for 1,000 please, Alex. 1.00

He must have had some kind of stage presence to get as far as he did with so little talent.

His sad songs made me angry. And bored.

Folk singer. No real hits per se.

Gee that Fred Neil has a particular style, interesting. Oh no sorry it's Tim Hardin, Red Balloon is a good tune, oh no..sorry it is Tim Buckley! Fuck me, they literally all sound the same, the same and I mean the same. Were they all sitting having coffee in Cafe Au Go Go practising to sound alike? Weird. Still at least it wasn't Coldplay/Sonic Youth/Nick Drake, I should be grateful for small mercies. Jesus Mary and Joseph this was boring, there is nothing, and, I mean it sports fans, nothing going on here. Across the world a claque of middle aged over educated white men are suffering through this, trying to think of a reason to accept why Dimery and his goons put this on the list. It's existential man, there is no reason.

Reminded me of Merlin's Monocle. Not my thing. Also feels and sounds like other 1960s albums on this list.

Not memorable or interesting at all

Not a fan at all, I love Jeff’s voice find Tim’s voice irritating

Did not love

Goodbye

A collection of 10 hippie folk melodramas.

oh brother this guy stinks

Tim Buckley can fuck off

Redundant. One Tim Buckley album on this list is enough. His brand of shrill Folk singing is just not my bag. Hey, look! Another album that features the fine drum work of psychopathic mother-killer, Jim Gordon. I guess that's kind of interesting.

I’m pretty sure this is the guy whose guitar is smashed by Belushi.

This guy sucks...

The Carnival Song was maybe the worst thing I have ever had the displeasure of hearing.

Felt one-note. Too folksy for me.

I’ve tried Tim Buckley before. I want to like it, or at least to feel that I get why so many later artists namecheck him as an influence, but it’s way too fey and fussy for me. The lyrics are very much of their time, or one strain of that time, with fantasy-folk tropes (“Oh whither has my lady wandered?”) that set my teeth on edge. I also don’t love his undeniably big voice: it’s ‘impressive’ rather than enjoyable. The whole thing just sounds quite pompous and pretentious to me, even allowing for the spirit of the age it was released into.

I wouldn't leave my drink unattended around this donny

Clunker

The Good: This album serves as a reminder that there are people out there who suffer from dyslexia! The Bad: Mr Buckley suffers from more than just dyslexia… The Ugly: My dyslexee being awakened by thiss album? At some point I will have to find a library which includes the 1001 book in its collection, so that I can find out which criteria resulted in so many shit albums seem to be important to listen to before one dies, while there are one too many albums missing on this list which, IMHO, should be listened to. 1967, it seems, has one too many psychedelic folksy crap albums one might be forced to listen to if one, like this fool, is attempting at finalizing the 1001 list. Here’s to my fingers being crossed that this is the LAST of this kind of shit albums I have to listen to… 1* out of pure spite, though one could bump it up to 2*… but I already did that with his last album, so fuck it...

31/1001 First listen. What a trip. Like what you hear in movies setting the scene that it’s now the late sixties except it’s nothing cool like All along the watchtower. Hard to embrace this one for the first time in 2025. 2/10

Not for me. 1/5

It was not immediately apparent why this album was included in the list. I consulted Wikipedia and that was no help. It is times like these that I wish I had the book because I am stumped. I did not enjoy that at all.

TS PMO

Boring songs, annoying voice

Absolutely rubbish sadly

There was very little engaging in this. And vocals were annoying. 1/5

Not for me

This album feels forgettable in every way.

Not good all the worst tropes of singer songwriter cali folk sound. Cringe lyrics. Thought there would be a gem or two among considering the esteem but blarg not good boring even.

2/10 - very boring, can't remember one song

Previously rated: Greetings From L.A. (3/5) Happy Sad (2/5) ******************************* The first half is lame hippie folk rock, and I was leaning towards a 2/5, then the second half was just lamer hippie folk with no rock.

Aargh. Very disappointing.

Not for me.

I found this album atrocious. A mediocre opening two tracks, cheesy/stupid lyrics throughout, a reliance on medieval and circus music? Just when there is a nice ethereal musical moment it is immediately dashed away when he opens his mouth. Very unessential listen. 1.4/5 - > 1/5

Too hippy for my taste. Not a fan of his voice overall.

Really hate everything about this, most of all his singing. Knight-errant is one of the worst songs ive ever heard. Somehow this is so much worse than the german construction noise albums on here.

I wanted to like this but I can’t with his voice

Goodbye and hell no.

Had to update this to a 1 after listening to his other album. Would not listen again I did not like this.

Didn't connect with this album at all. Buckley obviously has good vocals, but I was not remotely interested in the flower-power/almost medieval sound of the album.

Well he certainly believes in what he’s singing about. That much comes across at least. Not my thing.

Popstar attempts psychedelia. This is the 1960's equivalent of Taylor Swift making a death metal album. It's not going to turn out well..

How about just Goodbye

Pretty boring shit

I could’ve been just fine without this.

Over -earnest, over-wrought vocal of affected lyrics. Orchestration, similar, though some pieces jam a bit. Overall, annoying.

Listened to this in the car while running errands. Really disliked it. The songs were lame, awful vocals, and what I could catch of the lyrics seemed overly pretentious. Some instrumentation was a bit intriguing but not enough to get this to a 2.

I was thinking “2” the whole time, but honestly, I don’t think I enjoyed more than a minute of this. I was wishing for it to be over by song three. If that’s not a 1, what is.

Just can't do it. This guy is insufferable. His voice is grating. The music is mediocre at best. Just no. No more of him. Make it stop.

I listened to this album 3 times trying to find something I enjoyed and I just couldn't find it. I'm not going to bash the guy as I'm sure he has a lot a fans. Just not this listener. Talented? Yes. Something I enjoyed? No 1

The 2nd Tim Buckley album this month and it is as tedious as the other

Goodbye.

Absolutely awful! Like a shitty medival party with some twat that needs to be shot in the ass with an arrow. ENOUGH

Booooooooooooring

No thank you. This was excruciating

Not really good at all

Gefällt mir einfach nicht! Vermisse eingängige Songs.

Cheer up.

Starting to think the 60s were overrated. This sounds like the soundtrack to Monty Python and the Holy Grail, except painfully sincere.

Not really a fan of this style of music. Felt like I was at a second-rate renaissance festival.

I tried. It’s nfm

Sounds dated... Also, doesn't sound very good

Why did so many folk singers in the 60’s decide that singing as pretentiously as possible was a good thing? The style of music often reminds me of a Ren faire. Not one I ever want to listen to again.

Well, that’s 42 minutes I’ll never get back.

Not for me.

Don’t exactly get why this album made the list.

Not really anything to recommend.

The depths of my hatred for this man and his music.

Tim Buckley here decided to pour every feeling he’s ever had into Goodbye and Hello, except he forgot to edit anything out. Listening to this is like being cornered by someone at a party who insists on sharing their deepest thoughts at full volume. The songs stretch on for days, with Tim’s voice swinging wildly between “I’m sensitive” and “I’m screaming for no reason.” It’s folk-meets-jazz-meets-psychedelic-chaos, and each track feels like he was about three minutes away from either collapsing or pulling out a tambourine. It’s intense, it’s long-winded, and it’s about as coherent as reading Shakespeare in reverse.

Glad I’ve tried but it’s a no from me

I say no bueno.

This was a chore to listen to.

If you like carnival folk, this is for you. I don't.

Dumb shit, sounds like something you’d hear at a Renaissance fair

Not my favorite

goodbye

This...was...horrible. I almost turned it off but thought I would stick it out. There were moments of fantastically horrendous drug-induced hallucinations, but I could have died before listening to it!

This is the second TB album on this list and this is two too many. A real struggle to get to the end. Smug 'sensitive' singer-songerwriter pap. If I could give 0 I would.

Tim Buckley has one of the most annoying singing voices out there - painful to listen to.

Dreadfully boring. I dont remember anything from this album except the boredom that I endured. Maybe it's not 1 star bad but it's getting it anyway.

60s, folk/psychedelic... but so boring.

Horrendous. Sounds like it was recorded in an aluminum trash can.

So bad...this type of folk just doesn't do it for me. Seemed liked Medieval lute cospplay with no talent at times. 1.5/5

man what is this

Sounds a bit too earnest and oversentimental to me. A couple of the vocals made me think of Mickey Dolenz of The Monkees. There's nothing here of interest to me and I couldn't bring myself to sit through the entirety of a single song but I kind of liked one of them. 1.5/5

Goodbye and Hello continues a bit of a meh run we've been on with a couple of decent interruptions; again, why is this on the list? It's a very 60s crooner sound by a guy who warbles rather than sings, and doesn't bring anything fresh or new or unique to the table. I'm pretty sure it's only on the list because he's Jeff Buckley's old man and, well, that can fuck off. 1.5 if I'm generous.

fallen out of time, inaudible.

Now that art (unfortunately for us.) Tim was a poet and a minstrel. A variety of sounds, especially in the background, which would have been better if on Xtasy while listening. (1.5*s)

WTF. why is this here. Never heard of him, will hopefully never again!

Another pile of crap

Yawn…

More Goodbye than Hello for me

Tedious and dreary. Sorry 😞

They should put a picture of this album in the Merriam-Webster dictionary next to the word "pretentious"... I would actually give this a "0" if I could... I loved Jeff Buckley's stuff - as I understand that Tim was his dad, but this was incredibly difficult to even get through... Definitely not in my wheelhouse - nor my cup of tea, but I really struggle to see what those of you who gave it 4's & 5's, are basing that on... C'est la vie...

This is one of the those albums that makes you wonder what the parameters are to make this list. Truly an awful album. 1/5 Definitely won’t listen again

Ficou tocando e passou despercebido.

Didn’t like it at all.

Today’s album makes me antsy! Shut UP Tim Buckley. You are NOT the Velvet Underground and you are NOT Paul Simon and I have had ENOUGH. No. Just no. Bring me the mouthwash.

Some artists have not aged well. This is one of them. Sorry to say, but Tim Buckley's presence is overbearing and his singing style theatrical. I had to stop after five songs.

Just...ugh.

I want to mark this album as a 1 for the album cover alone. Let's see how this goes. Yeah, this sucks significant ass.

Eh. Psychedelia and singer-songwriter? Pass.

I'm not particularly a fan of his voice, and the rest of the music wasn't good enough to make up for it.

Not for me

Ditch it from the list

Terrible. I'm sorry, but no.

Soy face: the album

I FUCKING HATED ITY

MORE Tim Buckley? God damn. Of all the albums ever recorded Tim has 2 (please tell me there aren't more than 2) in the top 1001? Suuuure.

No thanks

More 1960s folk-psychedelic-rock - it all sounds so dated now.

Thank god I wasn’t alive whenever this was cool

Not feeling it

Listened to the first track, then the starred ones... Typical 60's anti-war pop, without a popular track on it. Not my cup.

Not for me

This is clown music

Never grabbed me. 1

While there were flashes of okayness, most of the vocals in this album unsettled me. There aren’t enough drugs on the planet for me to actually enjoy this.

OK Tim, what do you have for us? Social commentary and guitar? That's my guess. Let's see. More energy than I expected but jeez, so pretentious. Oof. No thank you. Worst: Hallucinations. No, worst: Knight-Errant.

Horrible

Your face is just a combination of thousands of years of other people's faces.

Tedious.

Wasn’t a fan of his last album and a fan of this one either

Medieval funk rock, some of the songs (esp. Goodbye & hello itself) pricked my ears up as being very listenable, then the jesters and jousters get involved again and it loses me - switched off twice and went and listened to some zeppelin instead!

Horrid. The typical post 60s folkie drops acid and makes unlistenable experimental stuff with random studio instruments, forgetting how to write songs.

Tim Buckley's second album of folk rock music released in 1967. The songs seemed too slow for me to get into this album, but Tim's singing is good. I don't need to listen to this album again.

"Did you know that Jeff Buckley's dad was a singer-songwriter too?" "No, I did not, I did not know that" "Yeah, his name was Tim" "Never heard of him..." And now we know why... :)

Wow, I tried to listen to this three times, and I can't get through one song of his. I find his voice way too high pitched and whiny. Maybe other stuff will be better. I am going to get the book tonight so I am excited to read the entry.

maybe it was my mood, but I did not like this album.

I only listened to one of the 10 tracks to the end! Didn't like his voice, didn't like his folk style

I don’t like it. It’s folky and dull & ive had enough of getting stuck with these disappointing choices. 1 Star!

Really didn't dig it. Generic 60's Folk/Psychedelic.

Petitioning for no more Buckley albums
