oh shit there's a hoarse in the hospital
Been meaning to listen to this one for a while, good thing I did cuz HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLY SHIT
May be the sickest shit I’ve ever heard
Sick beats and unhinged rhymes. Kool Keith was wayyyyy ahead of his time, and you can still feel his influence on modern rap. Great pick for the list.
Kool Keith's collaboration with Qbert and the Automator is brilliant. This album represents some of my favorite work from all of them.
Absolute classic from the greatest MC of all time
WHAT A GLORIOUS WERIDO. I know Earth People from a Andrea Parker DJ Kicks album, and Blue Flowers from... somewhere.. but have never heard all of Dr. Octagonecologyst. Yup, just as bonkers. Effing love this.
This is my jam. Kool Keith is super weird and I love it. Love Dan The Automator too. The skits could be dropped if you ask me.
Very interesting - is this where Frauenarzt got his idea from?
I guess I'm a sucker for juvenile humour then, because despite not being a huge hip jop/rap fan, I loved this album.
Crazy
Easy. One of my faves.
So out there with the beats I loved it
I loved this. Beats were great, lyrics were awesome. Fun to hear an artist that does not just do the same thing. Kool Keith has built a whole world. Seems like he also carries this character into other albums. I may listen to them too.
I was surprised to see this in the Trip Hop Essentials playlist on Apple Music, but after listening I definitely see why. This has such a specific and sort of eerie vibe that I really loved, I was really into the whole sound of the album. Also I only knew Kool Keith from being the sample in Smack My Bitch Up by The Prodigy and from a feature on a Jurassic 5 album, but he's really good. I really liked his voice, and he's got crazy flow. This album is a little bit long, but honestly that's fine by me cause I really just love the sound of it. Favorites: 3000, Blue Flowers, 1977
An all-time classic. Juvenile, sophomoric, profane, absurd - this is a record that embraces the chaos and rides the fine line of good taste. Grimy, left-field-sampling, synth-laden beats by Dan The Automator and tasteful, textural scratching by DJ Qbert compliment Kool Keith's non-sequitor free-association flow style as the inimitable, bizarre Dr. Octagon. THERE'S A HORSE IN THE HOSPITAL!!!!
- Who said it: James Joyce or Kool Keith? .... Take the test! "I got 9/10, but only because I know James Joyce. Really makes me want to listen to Kool Keith. Anyone can tell me where to start?" "Sure bro. Dr. Octagonecologyst. It's a really surreal album with Dan The Automator production. Keith uses an alternate persona, "Dr. Octagon", throughout. This album is extremely influential imo. Highlight tracks to me are Blue Flowers, Bear Witness, and 3000. But honestly, listen to the whole thing. Pretty incredible experience of an album." "Thanks dude! Been meaning to listen to it, love Dan's production on the original Deltron 3000." - 12y ago - Unfortunately, this online test no longer exists ... ah, the modern age .... Kool Keith is a treasure. Is it hard? Yes. Is it raw? Yes. - but - It's art and art is hard, sometimes raw, sometimes ugly. Buck up, youngsters. Don't be such a prude, go for the ride ..... -
Lol one time while in the commercial kitchen making candy I put this album on and everyone asked me to change to something else. Strong quit scaring the hoes vibes when this is played in public. Kool Keith and Dan the Automator, how can you hate it? One of the earliest rap concept albums and, as far as I am aware, the first to revolve around a central fictional character throughout the entire thing. This is a cinematic sci-fi soundscape.
What a bloody masterpiece. Loved every single moment of it. Yes, it did feel like it was getting a bit long towards the end. But I loved the bonkers nature of it. The samples. The irony. The persona. How the music describes and informs the character (heavy synths on some of the tracks). The conversations. I can understand some of the samples and things might be a bit uncomfortable, but I found them very funny and didn't feel the need to take them too seriously. It's a great record. Very much in the MF Doom sort of style as well.
SO GOOD
Oh hell yes
New to me and pretty interesting. While listening I read there's also an instrumental version, I listened to it on YouTube and preferred it. The raps are ok but the beats are where it's at. I would put this in the rotation if I had easier access to the Instrumentalyst version.
Had a “WTF!” reaction to every other song. Really fun and interesting
Classic. Fun for the whole family.
Highlights: 3000, Earth People, Blue Flowers, I’m Destructive
Fan of Dan the Automator, although this isn't my favorite project of his. However, this is still a great hip-hop record. Love it!
Rectum word count is off the charts. Brilliant & sick.
Loved it. It was fire all the way through with that THICK 90s funk
Dude, I honestly thought this was going to be rock or metal but it's hip hop, rap? But I dig it!! super love this actually. This is a 5 star album man.
9/10 haven’t listened to this one again in a very long time I remember hearing Blue Flowers in a tv show and loving it so much I decided to hear the rest of the album while I would say that said song is the highlight of the album, that isn’t to say the rest of the album isn’t absolutely superb
It’s weird because I feel cooler than I did this morning after having listened to this but also like more of a dweeb knowing that I wouldn’t have if not for this.
Cool. It's playing for the second time now. This falls neatly into what seems to be my golden age of hip hop. Interesting beats, flows, jazzy and trippy samples cooked to perfection and not a gangsta in sight. Lyrical themes are 𝘩𝘢𝘳-𝘩𝘢𝘳, instead, but I can choose to not pay attention. Good stuff.
Sophomoric lyrics about poo poo and magnificent beats. What’s not to like?
Extremely immature and sometimes disturbing but still a great hip hop album. Dan The Automator, DJ Qbert and Kool Keith is an awesome combo. The songs are tight in every aspect. I thought about giving this album a 4/5 as I can't help myself and compare this to Deltron 3030 which is another Dan The Automator production. Deltron 3030 is among the best hip hop albums ever created and one of my favorite ones. Dr. Octagonecologyst is not as good but it's hard to beat perfection. Still, this is a great hip hop album and something I listen to from time to time so I'm giving it a 5.
This was an instant classic that didn’t sound like anything else and Kool Keith is a singular MC. It’s like a crazy futuristic comedy funkadelic. Highly influential and basically the start of the whole backpacker scene.
I saw cool Keith on my 25th birthday at the pyramid after scoring tickets off of Twitter. He did not disappoint. This guy is just super creative and with Automator this album is very unique. I regularly quote “fuck it he’s dead!” And “oh shit there is a horse in the hospital!” And nobody ever gets the reference
What a wild about this is. Let's just start with the slightly cringey idea of a rapper pretending to be a gynecologist. You kind of know where this is going, right? Sure, there is a skit about Dr Octagon posing as a women in order to seduce a patient. It's in poor taste but also so ridiculous that it's hard to really be offended by it. There's also a porn sample with a similar theme. To be expected. Those two tracks aside, "Dr. Octagonecologyst" becomes genuinely weird. The lyrics are on the border between juvenile humor and dark, surrealist dreams. The title character travels through space and time, curing/spreading bizarre diseases and murdering (accidentally?) his patients. It's kind of medical horror meets b-movie sci fi, and the result is dizzingly psychedelic. Love it or hate it, there's nothing else really like it and it stood in stark contrast to the hip hop of the day, which moves from the underground and obtain as much wealth as possible. But we really need to talk about producer Dan the Automator who seems to have been so inspired by the surreal lyrics that he sort of reinvented hip hop. Automator pulled on the inspiration of classic hip hop, but in a darker and more bizarre way, to emulate the feelings of space and medical settings (sometimes both). This was the album that established Automator was a force of nature who would one day launch the success of Damon Albarn's Gorillaz, among other amazing projects. Layered on top of that is the supernatural scratching skills of DJ Q-Bert. Together, Q-Bert, Automator and Kool Keith formed an amazing group for this project. Kool Keith himself hated this project, feeling that it took attention away from his other work and brought in only white audiences. Admittedly, this album is going to really turn people off for being too strange, juvenile, and (at times) sexist. But beneath it all is a really incredible hip hop album.
I don't understand why people hate this album here. It has very dark and crude subject matter, which I understand why reviewers might find it disturbing. But "Dr. Octogonecologyst" is better than most of today's rap albums. Who can forget the fantastic beats brought to us by Dan the Automator? The skits are a bit lame, as is the case with almost all rap albums. 5 stars for "Dr. Octogonecologyst".
Kultni hip hop album iz devedesetih. Produkcija je zaradila dan the automatoru gog na prvim gorillazima
Wasnt sure what to expect but this was great
classic
Oh shit there’s a horse in the hospital
Objectively, this is not at all a 5 star album, but in my personal music-taste-journey, this is the album that broke hip-hop wide open for me, so it's getting a 5! In my first year of uni, just emerging from several years of listening to nothing but metal, a new friend - met through the most unhinged campus literary magazine - was convinced I could start liking hip-hop once I grasped the poetry and wordplay of it all. This was the late nineties, a year or two before Eminem appeared on the scene, so the only hip-hop I'd generally encounter would be either indistinguishable from pop music, or full on gangsta rap, and both those genres left me absolutely cold. After a couple of failed attempts using other albums, my new friend tried "Dr. Octagonecologyst" and hit pay dirt! It was so out there! Yes, it's juvenile and scatological - quite edge-lordy - but that worked in its favor. I was too busy exclaiming "what the fuck did he just say!?" to just dismiss it, and by the time "Blue Flowers" landed I was hooked. A freeform mess of science fiction, medical horror, and non-sequiturs was exactly what was needed to disarm my prejudices and catch my interest. And DJ Q-Bert's scratching is siiiiiiiick, too. The porn movie samples are still super cringe, though. Fave tracks - "Blue Flowers", obviously, and "I'm Destructive", and then probably chunks of many of the other tracks...
I guess there’s a bunch of prudes and pearl-clutchers on this album project, huh? Before listening I scrolled the reviews and they gave me a different expectation than what I actually listened to. This album features amazing beats and a really kick-ass, unique rap delivery. The lyrics are up and down, but who cares, really? They’re not basic or stupid, if anything they’re bursting with creativity. I was gonna give this a 4, but as I write this, I think it might be a 5, if nothing else than to even the scales haha. ML #91.
The Dr. Octogan album is on another planet on a different day. The music, DJ Qbert and Dan the Automator, with Kool Keith over top of it. So good. Unique hip-hop, with elements of horror, and psychedelia. The album most certainly deserves it's place on the list. To get a better understanding on where this album sits one needs to listen to DJ Qbert - Wave Twisters, Episode 7 Million: Sonic Wars Within the Protons; as well as Peeping Tom.
There are a lot of albums I love, but there are few albums that I am dead sure I love more than anyone I've ever met. Dr. Octagonecologyst is one of those albums, and to such an extent that I've drafted a 33 1/3 book pitch for it multiple times. Some albums sound of their time, some sound ahead of their time. Dr. Octagonecologyst somehow does both at the same time. If the time it was ahead of ever comes, I'll be shocked and delighted in equal measure, just as I am every time I listen to this album.
Didn't know this existed. Glad I do now
Not the thing i would listen to on a regular basis, stoll so solid, so diverse and so groovy, cannot give this less than 5
Fantastic, subtle, delightful sophisticated. The humour was multifaceted and timeless, like Chaucer's Canterbury Tales.
Great concept album taking psychadelic rap to new hights. Although the beastie boys had done it in their album pauls corner and a tribe called quest after them. The definitive psych rap album has to be black sunday by Cypress Hill. That is the album that keeps on giving and was followed by temple of boom which is also in the top 3 ever. B-Real followed with his side project psycho relam from the soul assasins and killed it there as well. That being said this album is absolutely fabulous and deserves to be a top rated psych rap album. Maybe a bit to close of sound to Cypress but if you gonna do something great, make sure to borrow your influence from the best to ever do it
It's definately a vibe, not my vibe, but a Vibe for sure. I see where people would enjoy it, very "Trip-hop". This came out in 1996 and you can hear it. It would be interesting to see how Kool Keith evolved over the years. We will see if my curiosity get the better of me.
I believe it is safe to say that, if it weren't for the emergence of Dr. Octagonecologyst, underground hip-hop in the late 90s/early 2000s would wound up not having such a stronghold on those that grew jaded with the materialistic braggadocio prevalent within the genre. Having established himself as hip-hop's journeyman, Kool Keith crafted a persona that was as depraved, disturbed and outright dexterous in his lyricism and supposed handling of his patients. With equally out there instrumentation and sampling from fellow collaborator Dan the Automator, Dr. Octogon swirls, sneers, staggers and oozes with sleaze for a little over an hour, an hour that would end up galvanizing like-minded artists to buck the trend and forge their own path.
I first heard this album in a house on a steep hill nestled among the Ponderosa pines of Flagstaff probably around the time it dropped in '96 with a dude named Kurt who was a niche mountain biker (he practiced bike hopping in the boulders near there). The album is revolutionary using completely disassociated words. This is the Pooty Tang of hiphop where only the feelings lend much to the incredible lyrics. Kool Keith, the badass vocalist who has been in so many incredible projects (Princess Superstar anyone) is at the top of his game here. Earth People, Halfsharkalligatorhalfman, and the most mainstream (if you can call it that) Earth People are all personal favorites. Controlled by gamma light. Ugh. The samples, the lyrics, just next level. Probably one of my favorite ever albums, only made better when later combined in a mashup with Wesley Willis for 'Northwest Airlines' (god damn). This album is so unique that it can be disorienting the first time you hear it. Welcome to the fifth dimension, newcomers.
This guy was sent by God Our Lord to redeem us from our sins. I was very aware of “First Come, First Served” - another masterpiece - so huge was my surprise when I found out that they both were the same person. The unexpected sampling, careful arranging, and mad lyricism creates a unique never-boring always-mind-blowing experience. Honestly, wtf. Peace.
Sprinkle of DOOM, sprinkle of Westside Gunn, Sprinkle of Pharcyde, Michelin star meal 🔥🔥🔥
this was fire. will defo relisten
This was a lot of fun and also fucking great music. Literally loved it
Phenomenal and amazing. This record is an absolute staple to anyone’s collection.
Ceaseless and complex Scratched and spun maze of wordplay Odd, head bobbing rap
Unhinged greatness
Such an influential album with so many great tracks. Earth People, 3000, Blue Flowers, and my fav halfsharkalligatorhalfman.
Genuinely odd and spooky hio hop album. Kool Keith has some crazy lines, sometimes seeming like he is reading straight from a chemistry book. And Dan the Automator's production and DJ Qbert's scratches take this to a completely different level.
Nothing like this album. Legendary
Awesome. Definitely on my list of listen again
Knew Dan the Automator from the Booksmart soundtrack but no idea his background was this cooooooll. Jumpscare gynaecology exam halfway through
Discovered this in high school, still remember most of the lyrics. Great beats and delightfully bizarre.
Such a great album. I love Dan the Automator's production and Kool Keith's weird off-kilter lyrics. It gets a bit juvenile at points though I will say. I've always felt like this was a sister album to Deltron 3030.
the porny songs!!! but i like the hip hop
This is one of my all time favorites so it's an easy 5 stars for me.
I loved this album. Great beats, great lines, great entertainment. This goes into regular rotation for sure.
I have always had a soft spot for this album, especially blue flowers
Love this album
This is cool stuff - I had no familiarity with it, but it is clearly a foundation for future alt rap that I started to enjoy in college. I've been super generous with 5s recently, but DGAF
Very inter And complex rap album.
Really good would listen again
this is a fucking crazy album. I’d heard of it before in passing on Reddit or something and probably listened to one or two songs and wrote it off as too weird, but maybe I was just too lazy to give it a real chance. This sounds like nothing else I think. Even today. I feel like we wouldn’t have alternative hip hop like we have it today a la DOOM and Gravediggaz and possibly even the entire horror rap thing that I don’t know much about if this didn’t come out when it did. Dan the Automator went totally original for all of these beats. Can really hear the Sun Ra Parliament Funkadelic influence in how weird it sounds I vaguely remember Blue Flowers being in a videogame. That’s probably my favorite on here. His flow is super different. He almost sounds like Gil Scott Heron with the borderline spoken word thing going on. I’m thankful this one got recommended to me.
Third is something I'm glad to now know. Delightfully weird af and commentary
meh
My favorite kind of hip hop is weird, off-center hip hop that sounds great which is the perfect way to describe this. Kool Keith, Dan the Automator and DJ Qbert really hit my sweet spot. I'm giving it 5 stars notwithstanding the very creepy "A Visit To The Gynecologist"
Interesting end 90s hip-hop
Flow's out of control, writing's weird as fuck but funny and pretty smart at times - did someone say non sequitur? Production is big trip hop/avalanches sound. Compellingly off putting, upsetting and unsettling. Can't stop listening. Have I been possessed? What a disturbingly intriguing experience. Don't mind me I'm diving in for a second listen, if I'm not back in 1hr 5min send a search party
Que carismático, 5 porque no hay 4.5
strangely intriguing. additional points for random alien lore concept album. also: nice ambient background soundtrack snippets. man, it's hip hop but it's weirdly tickling my brain buds.
It's good this. I'm all in for scritchy scratches and wicky wacks
This was an interesting album. Very listenable to. Kool ez beats n rhythms. A concept rap album?
Schon sehr smooth
Definitely not always of the good clean variety, but it’s great fun all the same.
somehow matches the vibe of the cover but without being kitschy
Vaguely spooky but definitely cool. Great production (Dan The Automator), scratch work (DJ Qbert) and Kool Keith/Dr. Octagon is smooth and lyrically talented. I am generally a fan of hip-hop that uses real samples of actual instruments and this doesn't disappoint on that front. It's also refreshing to hear rapping from this era that isn't exclusively about life hustling on the streets. Nothing inherently wrong with that, it was just a huge movement in the charts for probably a decade, sort of like how most punk music in the charts for a similar stretch was actually about teenage angst and relationships. This has some warts -- a little of the juvenilia wears thin on me and I'll say it again: we don't need the sketches. The scenes seemingly improvised over clips from old pornography are especially strange and, leading into 'Girl Let Me Touch You', I don't think the result holds up all that well. Mind you, at the time, representations in pop culture often centred on how a clever man might trick a woman into having consensual sex (not at all a thing, I know), so this isn't some strange, isolated instance. That's just an artifact of its time, if ugly. Overall, it's an enjoyable record. Yesterday's Public Enemy was definitely better but this is way off the mainstream and it's important to listen to those broader influences in genres like this. There's more to rap than the top of the charts. A 4/5 from today's vantage point but definitely also a must-listen.
This was really cool!
de letra eu esbocei um sorriso de beat e flow realmente de altissimo nível
ou pior que eh bão também um climinha mais soturno, umas letra mais besta, sem se levar mto a sério, mas fazendo um trabalho mto pica. beat e flow impecáveis!!
What a weird but strangely entertaining album. Played it twice straight through. Reminded me of The Jurassic 5.
New artist to me. Great sound. 4/5
Sounds like a stone surgery. Don't ask me what that is. 4/5
Les paroles un peu chelou mais le flow est bon
Du bon hip hop et les lyrics sont marrants en plus. On sent vraiment le personnage qui est développé j'ai bien aimé.
Bom para quem gosta de rapper (eu não).
The first song is atrocious but the rest are actually interesting
I never really got into Kool Keith or his alter ego albums back in the ‘90s like one of my friends was, but as I got older I was able to appreciate them more. The major issue with this album is the run time is over an hour. Could have cut out 15 to 20 minutes and it would have been much better. 4.25 / 5
Cool 90s rap. Worth another listen
The doctor diagnosed me with bees in my rectum. It's good, decent beats and great flow. Once you get my head bobbing, it's a good rap album.
so fun but so long... I love hip hop when it's cosplaying evil scientists and shit, such interesting wordplay emerges.
if you’re looking past the mask that’s put on for this album, it’s a very solid piece of the ninetys. first time hearing kool keith or any of the pieces he’s put out but i enjoyed it a lot, added to library.
One of the best rap albums I have ever heard. I loved it it was super out there and his flow is so good. The album just kept pumping out hits the more and more it went. I really liked it
This was awesome. Glad I finally got to listen to it considering it’s always on everyone’s rap topsters and shit. Good beats and good rhymes from an underrated rapper. Love it.
Once you get past the name, the cover and the first track, there's an amazing journey of an album here. Dr. Octagon must've watched a lot of sci-fi and porn and visited lots of doctors growing up, as you can hear these influences throughout, but somehow it's put together in a sound that is totally original, yet also seems familiar. Shoutout to the DJ, as that's some of the best/most creative scratching I've heard. Dr. Octagon reminds me of Mike Reid a little. It's Hip Hop that's just out there. I'll definitely listen again! Liked Songs Added: Earth People Blue Flowers
I like the pacing / production / scratching and the lyrically delivery. Not mad keen on the alien concept but it mostly goes over my head. Nice to have a DJ Shadow mix.
Some classic bars on this one, dunno how I missed this growing up
Suka banget. Sangat terdengar anehnya. Mungkin ini proto playboi carti. Ada nuansa MF Doomnya juga (yang dimana mungkin proto juga). Gak pernah denger nama MC ini sebelumnya. Turns out, sangat menyenangkan.
Pretty good, reminded me of MF Doom
Reminds me of MF DOOM
Trashy but enjoyable
The doctor is in for fresh flows and lord knows what goes.
It took three disjointed listens of this album for it to land with me. Drum loops and bass lines would grab me. Next, Dr. Octagon (Kool Keith) would be reviewing his latest patient in gross out fashion as he seems to specialize in medical issues that are not discussed in polite company. He shifts gears to visit the outer planets in an updated/forerunner version of Afrofuturism. The snippets were amusing and striking, and after bearing down a bit my pleasure rose. The rollicking organ driven “Earth People” licks off a three song streak that sent me bouncing through my empty classroom on a Monday morning. His Tracy Morgan style raps and vocals were endearing in a drunk, crazy Uncle manner. Aside from the anatomy lessons, Kool Keith references a bevy of fellow musicians ranging from the Grateful Dead to Kurt Cobain to repeating the chorus of Christopher Cross’ “Sailing.” Those links are immediately followed with lyrics about enzymes, eggs, LA nights and robots. It reminds me of R.E.M.’s “It’s the End of the World.” Definitely a word salad to enjoy. Unlike a comedy record, I believe Dr. Octagonecolgyst will get better with future listens. I’ll pick up on more of the jokes and musical references. Kool Keith has created an enormous collage that will reward multiple looks.
You can hear Dan the Automator loud and clear. It’s honestly got a sound that was way ahead of its time for hip hop. It was vintage but new. The delivery was off kilter and stilted and that added to its charm and inability to be labeled as a singular sound. Kool Keith really hit it out of the park with this album.
Not big on rap. And the music is crazy filthy. But I love it. Been on rotation all day and I'm still trying to work it out. 4*
4.25 had to get past the intro them it was all gravy.
Det va gøyere enn æ frykta, om enn ikke helt for mæ. Men det va hyggelig selskap i timen det varte!
This is Tracy Jordan, right?
Definitely understand hear what made this influential for underground hip hop like DOOM and Aesop Rock. Overall pretty fun albeit a little long-winded, but definitely hits at most times and was overall a solid experience. 7/10
Honestly i kinda liked this. Could've done without the porno skit to start, but it had the right level of campiness for me to be fun instead of cringe. And the music itself was good.
Wonderfully bonkers. 8/10.
Buddy of mine always hyped this album but I never listen to it until now. Pretty good.
step into the office of dr. octagonecologyst, the solo debut album of kool keith, member of ultramagnetic mcs. some surreal and creative rap music today; this guy has a flow that no other rapper seems to match. a point of interest on this album is sample usage, a good amount of sound clips taken from x-rated films. this album smells. this album smells like caca and wee wizz. but it's very riveting. just close your eyes as a rubber glove enters your butt. this is standard procedure.
Enjoyed this, interesting beats and a cool sci fi-ey vibe. Some retro scratching stuff mixed in with the more abstract hip hop I enjoy most.
very weird and original, I like it
Brilliantly mad and dark
Great mad stuff that only got made in the 90£
I put this one off for a long time because I didn't know when I would be in the mood for it but it was actually quite good. I really enjoyed the production and the premise and lyrics were pretty funny. If the concept really bothers you that much you should consider lightening up.
I wasn't expecting to enjoy this, however I really dug it - great beats, great flows, wacky theme. Only complaint is that it overstayed its welcome a bit - even with a few skits thrown in, 20 tracks was quite fatiguing.
This is a very good album by a highly skilled rapper. It was very enjoyable, with good beats, but what makes it for me is the incredible wordplay and flows, though sometimes the lyrics don't make any sense. It is a little long, but still, a solid rap album. 4/5
Kool
Fun album, I enjoyed many beats a lot, I don't think I would listen to this in my daily life tho, but it sounds cool
first listen hilarious and fantastic production
For me, the most offensive crime any art can commit is to bore me. I'd rather listen to a 3 hour album of carefully constructed railroad noises than some of the generic and uninspired britpop that found its way onto this list. Say what you will about Dr. Octogonecologyst, but this is one of the most unique albums I've come across from the 100 or so I've listened to so far. Sometimes it can be hard to review the albums on this list. If something's bland, there's often not much to say since you forget that you listened to it. On the flipside, everyone knows the impact and talent in Pink Floyd, so what can I say that really adds to the conversation? This album stands out and will likely be among the few discoveries I look back on with appreciation when complete with the list. It's aggressively tasteless and does not apologize for its bizarre themes. When reading the Wikipedia page prior to listening, I first thought this would be akin to the Insane Clown Posse or something. While it can be juvenile in tone, Dr. Octogonecologyst differs from the ICP in that Kool Keith is legitimately talented. There's a great fusion of psychadelic and electronic music into Keith's lyrics, mixed with a flowing set of vocals that leaves you unsure of what'll happen next. Ultimately, this gets a strong 4 stars as I reserve my rare 5 star ratings for truly groundbreaking albums. It'll definitely be one that I revisit. That being said, I completely understand the general reaction to the vile lyrics here. It's abrasive. Highlights: Earth People
A doctor... from the future... that can't spell Octogon? Maybe that's just the future's way of spelling it. Otherwise, fun little concept album featuring east-coast boom bap hip-hop.
i fuck with this heavy. i love old school hip hop. i love a weird nigga with talent who doesn't take shit too seriously but is serious about his craft. the production is great. the lyrics are fire!! and it tells a story. I'm glad i was introduced to this nigga. anyone else who doesn't fuck with this shit either doesn't understand hip hop or is just racist
Zaney and Crass. Gotta admit it's a unique concept. 3.7/5
Made me wonder why anyone would make this. Also made me glad someone did
kool keith weird raps
Quirky
I have never heard of Dr Octagon, but he is my JAM!
great underground hip hop!!
A little slower than I remembered but still an absolute banger record.
Lots of crazy shit going on and you know what I'm here for it Favorites: 3000, Earth People, I'm Destructive, Waiting List
I lost weight listening to this.
Überraschend unterhaltsames HipHop Album.
Wer hätte gedacht, dass Konzeptalben über außerirdische Gynäkologen gut sein können... But here we are Beats fetzen richtig rein "Like my cock"
Groovy.
Strong and mostly consistent. Dan the Automator really gets to flex and that's usually a boon to any project
It's impossible for me not to love Kool Keith and his nonsense.
a great hip hop album! a little too long, i think dan the automator gets the pacing a little bit better on the deltron albums
This was pretty good. A few five star moments, a few awkward moments. This album might be the first time I enjoyed those bits or skits or whatnot between the songs. I will likely come back to this album in future.
Yay!
This was a lot of fun. It made me laugh out loud.
Soooo sexual…/bathroom humor/gore but also like good music…?
Wild concept album. I enjoyed it now as much as I did when I first heard it back in the 90's. Yeah, the lyrics are out there, the clips from porn movies are interesting, and the skits... oh man the skits. This is a big conceptual swing for Kool Keith's debut solo album. It may not all work, but it is never boring.
Rapping varies a lot song to song but the beats and scratching are always dope. fav tracks: "Real Raw", "Bear Witness", "A Visit to the Gynecologist" (The drums in particular on this one are crazy)
One of the things I'm enjoying most about this project is getting to know more hip-hop. I like this, and I think it must have been influential on other stuff I've heard. The constant rectum jokes were a bit much after a while though.
I'm pretty impressed with this. It seems very original, well written music and an almost movie-like soundtrack background. The lyrics are frequently juvenal, but aside from that, this might be the first non-Beastie Boys rap album I'd listen to again.
"Don't know how this is on the list." Did you try fucking googling it? lol Never in my life have I been exposed to a more intellectually uninterested music "fans." If you're reading this and it upsets you AND you're still under the age of 25, its okay. Your prefrontal cortex hasn't developed yet. There's hope for you yet. If you're over the age of 25... enjoy arrested development I guess? Anyway, the flow is great but the samples are where I'm digging this album. Constant references to pop culture and hip hop in general. Very proto MF DOOM.
Fun listen. It's weird and juvenile, but also innovative and refreshing. 4/5
Overall: 8/10 This was such a cool album. A lot of the beats reminded me of the stuff RZA does with Wu-Tang. Keith's flow and lyrical prowess reminded me a lot of Andre 3000. Basically, he's reminiscent of a bunch of stuff I enjoy, and that rocks. This is also such a strange concept for an album and I have to applaud him for being so out there with it. There were times that I kind of lost the plot but then he's bring me right back in with some crazy rhyming scheme. Great stuff. Fav Song: Blue Flowers
New discovery for me, and I'm sort of surprised I'd never come across it before. The bad first: it's absurdly juvenile, and at times very creepy (not in a fun way). The porn skits are...a choice. Would I play this loud on the stereo if my wife were home? Probably not. BUT. The beats are sooo good, and the flow is sooo good, and when he's rapping about weird, abstract, sci-fi stuff instead of doodoo and peepee and "let me touch you there," even the lyrics are pretty cool. I think my fellow MF Doom fans would be into this. Some of the beats are wild. "Blue Flowers" is fantastic.
Surprisingly good
OK some dodgy lyrics but really enjoyed this album, some great music
I like the pacing / production / scratching and the lyrically delivery. Not mad keen on the alien concept but it mostly goes over my head. Nice to have a DJ Shadow mix.
Interesting well executed concept
This guy a lyrical genius! Love the timbre of his voice and the beats are just weird enough.
rap hecho por un theatre kid que tiene una personalidad paralela que cree que es un alien médico y lo produjera el productor de gorillaz
This was not too bad. I don't want a steady diet of it but this kind of music works great dropped into my mixes. Would revisit.
I got into **Dan the Automator** somewhere around 2000 probably, so although I didn't hear this on release, it would have only been a few years after as a went through his back catalogue. Of course, he's the producer (and beatmaker) here on what is the debut solo album by **Kool Keith** of **Ultramagnetic MCs** fame and both parties bring a lot to the table on this quirky concept album; Keith with his cool flow and Dan with his futuristic beats that would lay a blueprint for alternative rap that can be heard in Dan the Automator's later work with **Deltron 3030** and **Handsome Boy Modeling School** and much further into alternative hip=hop, through the likes of **MF DOOM**, **Aesop Rock** all the way through to current artists like **JPEGMAFIA** and **.clipping** It's not my fave album in Dan's catalogue... the concept which at times is brilliantly absurd and surreal, also gets a little juvenile in places and like many hip hop albums of the era... it's too long and could easily have been trimmed. All in all though, this is really quite good and very influential!
I think this is a really cool album. A few years before Dan the Automator worked with Del tha Funky Homosapien to create the futuristic alt-rap concept album Deltron 3030, he hooked up with Kool Keith to create this futuristic alt-rap concept album about a surgeon from outer space who experiments on humans. I get people may be a little weirded out by some of the lyrics here, but Kool Keith has a really interesting flow, and his bizarre, sometimes free associative lyrics were kind of a game changer in 1996, paving the way for guys like Aesop Rock and MF Doom in the 2000s. Dan the Automator's production is really interesting for the time too -- forgoing the popular styles of the time and creating something that sounds otherworldly. Highlights for me are "3000", "Earth People", "Blue Flowers", and the title track, but outside of the skits, I think this is a really strong album throughout. 4.5 stars.
Cool album. Album cover is cool. Everything about this album is cool to be honest… or ‘kool’ because the rapper’s name is Kool Keith. Very wacky, lurid, off-kilter comedy horrorcore vibes and rhymes throughout and seems very ahead of its time in the realm of alternative hip-hop. Beats from Dan The Automator are mint and the wonder show scratching from DJ Q-Bert is maybe even more of a star at this operating table. Skits are also great. A horse is in the hospital? Classic. Moosebumps? Classic. The one about Dr Octagon giving treatment to a gynaecology patient whilst pretending to be a woman? Classic.
I have not heard this album in a long time. I forgot how much I love the beats on this album. The only thing I forgot about and I never really like that much or like the little skits in between. I do appreciate that they’re in between the songs and not attached to the songs, but I’m not a big skit guy. But still a great listen Biggest Hit - Blue Flowers Miss - any of the skits Surprise - Bear Witness
I wonder if I should create some rap music, because I’ve also never done disco.
Praskippinus porno gan geras albumas.
This album was one of the first that really opened my eyes to hip hop and made me see it in a new light. My buddy Brad introduced me to it in the late ’90s during high school. This album was on a whole new level. Up until then, about 99% of the hip hop I was exposed to felt the same, just some dude bragging about himself or grandstanding in the most prideful and arrogant way possible. But with this album, Kool Keith created an entirely new persona and was rapping about some wild science fiction stuff. Two other elements made me really appreciate this album. First, the production was intricate and heavily involved, far beyond just layering some samples and looping them. This was how I discovered Dan The Automator. Second, the scratching was next level, which led me to learn about DJ Qbert. From there, I became intrigued by underground hip hop and all the different elements of the genre, and my interest just continued to grow. Unfortunately, I have to admit that over the last 10 years or so, my interest in hip hop has really faded. But I still like to check in from time to time and see what Kool Keith is up to these days. To me, Kool Keith will always be the mad scientist of hip hop.
This went down better, lyrically, when I found out that this is Kool Keith and one of his alter egos. Sonically I freaking love it! There is some hardcore creativity going on here. Smooth in parts, hard when it needs to be. A dash of dark and mysterious trip hop vibes. Coming in close to having Halloween vibes. This is not just rap for rap sake. Like many albums from the 90’s, an hour plus is too long. I get it, the CD format allowed for more. That doesn’t mean that every album SHOULD be that long.
I like the music a lot. Gives Doom vibes with its zaniness, but it’s more focused on sex humor than random obscurities. Definitely recommend to hip hop fans.
I am a big fan of some of Dan the Automator's other work (Lovage, Gorillaz, Deltron 3030) so I was pretty excited for this one. However, sadly this is my least favorite thing I have heard from him. It is still good, and there are some stand out songs, but there are just too middle of the road songs, too many skits and too many songs that just feel like a bad joke. Overall, I enjoy the production and there are some standout songs, but there is also a lot of filler here. Low 4.
Oh shit there's a horse in the hospital! Having already pushed hip hop boundaries in Ultramagnetic MCs, Kool Keith created something even more futuristic here. His flow is wild, refusing to stay on the beat, spinning ridiculous body horror tales and throwing out words that only barely relate to each other. While this was bettered by later alternative hip hop artists with tighter flows and smarter lyrics (and who weren't just making poo poo jokes half the time), there's still a joy in listening to this untamed craziness. The beats have also not aged a day. Spacy and surreal, they add to the disorienting atmosphere while the excellent scratching gives the album a firm hip hop foundation. Uneven and silly because of the chances it takes, but still a blast.
I'm not convinced this guy's even a real doctor. But his music's pretty good.
Ooh a concept hiphop album? You know how it is... you plough through 300 albums pining for a song about rectums, then you get an album full of rectal references. He should have called himself Dr. Proctagon! I found the theme and lyrics a lot more interesting than the usual gangster-hoe-AK47-muthafucker-I'm-so-repressed posing braindead shite (I have Dr. Dre today - oh joy). But I bet a lot of the gynae humour will have upset the Gen Z-ers. It definitely appealed to my sense of humour though. Best hiphop i've had album so far.
Can’t believe I never heard this before.
Fun
I have mixed feelings about this album. I love the beats and the samples and all of the music. There wasn't a bad song musically on the entire record. There were also some really good and fun and funny songs, and I totally bought into the Sci-fi concept. His rapping is at times so fast and I really enjoyed that too. On the other hand, some of the humor is very sophomoric. It felt like a Beavis and Butthead cartoon at times, and that's not a compliment. If I was a middle school kid I probably would think it's hilarious, but I'm not. Given the album title, I worried it would be very misogynistic, but I didn't think it was. I found it just silly. And it was also just a bit too long for my taste. This is a 3.5 and I'll decide tomorrow morning whether that goes up or down when it's time to rate the album.
Rad album, surprised I hadn't listened to it before. Surprisingly more influential than I expected.
I kinda love everything that Dan The Automator touches, and this is right there with Handsome Boy Modeling School, Lovage, Deltron 3030, and even Pillowfight. I'm not a major hip-hop fan, but this is hip-hop that I can enjoy from end to end.
Really strange album. Kool Keith is a total freak. This album (not under the Kool Keith name) exploded him into "guy who knows music" popularity and gave him the latitude to get a real deal recording deal with Black Elvis/Lost in Space but anything with Kool Keith is a freak object. He is a totally unconstrained artist shirking at anything resembling commercial or culturally acceptable. The beats on this are unshakably cool. The lyrics are goofy, nasty, juvenile. It's a direct rebuke of the street toughness commonplace in 90s hip-hop. "Earth People New York and California, Earth People I was Born on Jupiter." It's spacey - sonically and spiritually. Favorite songs: Earth People, Halfsharkalligatorhalfman, Blue Flowers least: alright i think A Visit to Gynecologist is a bad sketch funniest line "I will explain but you'd become more puzzled at the possibilities Earth ending trilogies, wacky stuff Like gas passing dinosaurs Morlocks drawing circles blindfolded Gave a lady some wrinkle cream out of rat poop" worth reading the notes on these verses, a lot of incredibly obscure 1990s joke pulls on it. A lot of grocery store checkout line jokes, as good of a document on the decade as a Art Bell Coast-to-Coast AM broadcast.
The album cover had me very interested. The intro quickly had me concerned about what I was in for but then the great beats hit on 3000 and I was back in. Earth People was awesome, bringing more great flow and spooky beats and Real Raw put DJ-Q-Bert’s scratching skills on full display. This album has some fantastic stuff here, really entertaining and exciting beats. Fitting that I listened a week out from Halloween so that definitely added to the enjoyment. My gripe with the album would be the inclusion of the aggressive sexual skits, the gynaecologist skit was pretty gross but even that had some impressive scratching worked in. The character itself had me drawing comparisons to MF Doom’s work. Also, I really liked DJ Shadow’s appearance at the end. Frustrating, this could be a 5 but Girl Let Me Touch You felt so out of place the gross moments took me out of it. Just wish they leaned into the horror and remained focused on that even if it was hokey at times. Still super happy to be introduced to this. 4 stars

Digging this a lot
Solid 90s weirdy hiphop. Sounds a bit Prince Paul by way of the Gravediggaz.
I was pleasantly surprised with this album. Good flow, good beats, good songs. Okay, the idea and the concept are a bit out there, but the result is pretty good. Some of the spoken word skit style songs are a bit pointless musically and purists may skip them, but it all adds to the vibe and the story, so it’s not the worst thing in the world. A couple of songs are not quite as good, but this album packs in several bangers. It’s fun, it’s well produced and it’s entertaining. Discovering slightly more obscure music like this is a perfect example of why I wanted to work through this list 👍
Pretty interesting and eclectic sounds put together for a hip hop album.
Unexpected this. It is quite nice to find these hidden gems that the one album a day program reveals. I am a big fan of genres that swing off of techno and big beat, such as trip and hip hop. This is a near perfect blend of rap and hip hop that just grooves so well AND is super funny and just naughty enough to be a little "extra." I get why I had never heard of it, too... off the mainstream. But here it is and here I am to enjoy it! Yeah, this ... Just plain great fun. Mmm those drum beats just ... kick.
This shit is crazy. Hilarious. What a flow.
83% Best: Earth People; Real Raw; Bear Witness; Wild and Crazy Must-Hear? Sure
Pretty chill
keeping the rap alive
Surprisingly good!
4/5
Hip-hop with electronic music vibes. Solid delivery, good hooks and riffs. Seems to be a concept album about the character Dr Octagon - an alien gynecologist? Kind of humorous lyrically. Makes me think of MC Chris and MC Frontalot as well. Definitely some Beastie Boys influence. Also reminds of early Beck. Notable tracks include 3000, Earth Power, Bear Witness, Dr Octagon, Girl Let Me Touch You, Wild And Crazy, Blue Flowers (Revisited).
Now I understand the Neighbourhooh shoutout!
this is fun you should revisit
I dig this a good amount
This was a good album and I love that it was produced by fan the automator! It felt like it was part of the universe where deltron 3030 was and it was such a different type of rap album, but in a good way!
What white bread, silver spoon honkies are giving this 1 or 2 stars? This is pretty solid hip-hop. We have a mini satanic panic going on in the reviews here. "disturbing" "disgusting"... how about you grow up and quit crying about naughty language.
One of my favorite alt-rap albums. Weird, surrealistic and brilliant. Nothing accidental happening here.
Still weird and wild, like it more now than I did back in the day
Un peu trop long, aurait pu être resserré, mais très bon. Un album de rap avec de la personnalité.
It was great! Very old school a bit too much for me but the beats are so exciting and special it is unbelievable
Would there even be a lil Wayne without Kool Keith? Weirdness level 11/10 and I’m here for it.
Never heard before, very good, would seek physical copy ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (but probably a 5 really given more listening)
I know this came first, but this album reminds me a little of MF Doom. The production style is similar. The lyrics have interesting wordplay and are worth reexamining. The only issue I have is the way Kool Keith raps. He raps with no energy at all. I don't know if that's his style, but it took me time to get used to.
Pretty decent 90's hip-hop. 3.5 bumped up to 4.
They had me at "Half shark-alligator, half man".
I'm not a fan of rap, but this was a fun album and not all that objectionable. The nonsensical parts and techno babble were fun. Thematically, it kinda reminded me of a Rob Zombie album. There are, however, way too many instances of "anus", "rectum", and other butt-related references.
I'm not sure I trust his medical degree, but this was a fun, goofy listen. Brutally bad skits prevent any chance of this being five stars.
Pretty far out and funky
At times, the lyrics were dumb and/or vulgar, but the beat went very hard on most of the tracks. Great job by the DJ on this one.
I remember seeing this album in a used record shop back in the late 90s. I almost bought it but decided to buy Mezzanine instead. I should have bought them both. This is one of the most creative albums I've ever listened to.
Very weird, but also very good? I am conflicted on how to feel. The persona created on this album is a doctor that preys on women – blegh. But the rap flow and music production is super enjoyable, and I felt entirely taken with this smooth 90s East Coast hiphop sound. If I treat this as the musical equivalent of a horror movie, designed to transgress our moral sensibilities, I really liked it. I don’t agree with the lyrical themes, but I had a great time with the record.
Some great 90s beats on here. Really wish the premise was different, but enjoyed the production and flows. A weird experimental album that's a refreshing contrast to the recent glut of boring guitar and garage bands.
Rap is not a genre I listen to often, but I am finding more and more that my preferences lie in the East Coast ethos. Couple that with the surreal, Sci-fi, comedic mentalities that Kool Keith presents and it is definitely a winner for me. Will probably look to pick this up along with any other similar works.
It went on a little too long, but it was a lot of fun! More people need to get weird with their rap.
One of the strangest and greatest things to happen to rap. One has to ask if there even would be a deltron 3030 without this? Odd side bar: one night I got a call at my little bar that Kool Keith (also known as Dr. Octagon) needed a holdover place to play a show. I said yes and he played to all of 45 people and rocked the little house and tagged the heck out of my bathroom and handed out old porno mags. Real story.
a very important one here. kind of the genesis of abstract hip hop as a defined movement. at least when it crystallized into something distinct. morbidly funny and wildly creative. Kool Keith going in this direction is really cool and shows how much he matters to hip hop. deserves to be one of the 1001? yes, despite its slipping position among younger hip hop heads
Never heard of it before. I like the flow and the selection of samples. Stands out from the gangster rap of that era. Good to see dr Dre was not the only creative person in hip hop in the 90s. like most hip hop it's too repetitive. This was probably very influential on the mumble rap of the myspace era. Favorite song: 3000
I never wake up and think I must listen to some hiphop / rap but it is a genre I like and once I start listening, with the right artist, I do enjoy it. I didn’t know much about Dr Octagon but I had a good time here, although typically for this genre, the album is a touch long at over an hour.
Thoughts before listening: Underground hiphop from Kool Keith. This is one of those albums that cool kids that were into hip hop raved about but nobody else had ever heard of. I tried to be the cool kid for punk and indie rock, but I never really went too deep into cool hip hop. I'm actually pretty excited about listening to this. Review: This is definitely a hip hop sound that I can get behind, despite some overly sexual lyrics and juvenile themes on this album (rap album skits are almost all embarrassing and this one's tales of a fake gynecologist are especially cringey...but can I really judge when my high school days were spent listening to bands like NOFX). The laid back production with a heavy focus on DJ scratching is a sound that was very prevalent in late 90s/early 00s underground rap, and its one that I both enjoy as well as having strong nostalgic connection to. I didn't actually listen to Dr. Octagon in real time, but this album certainly influenced a lot of the hip hop that I did enjoy. There are some good songs on this album that I'm adding to the playlist. This is 4-stars.
advanced stuff
I was pleasantly surprised by this album. This is some really great mid-90’s hip hop (not obnoxious death metal like the album cover suggested). Dope rhymes, fresh beats… overall, not a bad listen.
Had never heard of this group or album - big fan! I definitely plan on listening to more by them. Great lyrics - fun album overall.
Never heard of this before but really enjoyed it mostly. What is it with 90s hip hop albums having to have all these skits on?? Is this still a thing now, don't feel like it is. It almost always detracts from the album, this is no exception. Lots of stuff about asses here, but if you don't take it too seriously I think it was pretty good 4
Despite my former coworker's high praise, I have never actually listened to Dr. Octagon. Kind of surprising given that his work exists in a similar space to other artists that I've listened to quite a bit (Del the Funky Homosapien, Cage, Busdriver [to an extent]). Reading the wiki for this album, I was surprised to learn that Dr. Oct is a moniker for Kool Keith. With Dan the Automator behind the boards for almost its entirety, this album's production and instrumentals do a lot of the heavy lifting. Varied throughout with very satisfying drum and bass, scratching, and sampling. Based on how much I've enjoyed this and other Automator-produced albums (Gorillaz, Deltron 303) its worthwhile to do a deep dive through his other works alone. While the instrumentals have no misses IMO, the skits and underlying thematic elements are rather absurdist and juvenile. Also there were a few songs where the choruses and delivery are, well, not great. Looking specifically at you Earth People... Despite these flaws, I actually found this to be a very enjoyable listen and was able to loop it back to back several times. A few cringeworthy moments, but there are a few bright spots that specifically stand out. Among these, the brightest in my memory are No Awareness > Real Raw, and Blue Flowers. 4 / 5
More proctological than gynaecological. Drink every time he says "rectum".
Interesting, different rap.
Dope beats, just enough record scratching, crazy porn samples, insanely original lyrics; it’s got it all. I’m in your corner.
Such a dope album, Dr. Octagon is a weird but extraordinarily lyricist and rapper. It's almost surprising that he doesn't come up more often in Hip-Hop legends conversations. I knew Earth People previously, and I would recognize Blue Flowers, but honestly there's not a real hit on this album. It flows together really well and has some good moments, so totally worth the listen. Okay, hold up, turns out Dr. Octagon is Kool Keith, he DOES come up in conversations about greats of hip-hop! I'm going to dig in further.
I was ready to be a hater but this was actually awesome. Love the lo-fi and atmospheric beats especially.
Interludes Werten ein Album halt einfach immer um mindestens ein Punkt auf und die hier habens in sich. Vollklingende hi hats tun gut im Vergleich zu dem ganzen trap Einheitsbrei.
I liked this -- with about 700 albums done in the 1001, one of the surprises for me has been the Wu-Tang content, which I've generally enjoyed. I don't like gangsta rap at all, but I do like old skool styles, and hip-hop. This material features some wacky samples and entertaining rapping, but more importantly, has some real musical content as well.
a kajjaznam. nije moja porcija cevapa al dobro je.
Love the use of samples. Great album
Kool Keith's space gynecologist rap persona
I don't know if one of the best 'rap' albums of the nineties, but the underlying music is up there.
This would be a five but Kool Keith is just too unhinged.
completely ridiculous album that somehow works
Another Rap Album? Another "Classic" I have absolutely no memories of?? Tick, Tick. But... I like it. Very much Old Skool rap, but it grooves away in an enjoyable manner, and the subject matter is wacky. Makes a change from the usual deprivation, drugs, crime, urban decay stuff. I wonder if Dr Octagonecogyst is an associate of Dr Benway? Already on it's second play. Extra kudos for any song with lyrics "carrying a dead walrus"
His methods may be unorthodox, but dammit, the doctor get's the job done!
Dan the Automator......say no more.
I like it
This is totally the style of hip-hop that I'm into. Just relaxed beats with crazy lyrics and I don't how to define that sound but it just sits so nice with me. Not to mention the scratching, my word. This is almost a 5 but it is a bit too cringy but not quite a 3 so I guess it sits in the middle. Faves: 3000, No Awareness (for the Transformers reference), Blue Flowers
Maybe I don't understand shit about the story of this album but this production and those beats... damn. Like, woaw. Like, bravo.
What the fuck is this? These dudes are amazing. And how on earth have I never listened to Kool Keith before? Oh look Marshall, you can write a rap song that doesn't require you to be angry about some random shit. Intro 3000 I Got to Tell You Earth People No Awareness Real Raw General Hospital Blue Flowers- was this the lead single? If there was a radio single? Technical Difficulties A Visit to the Gynecologist Bear Witness Dr. Octagon Girl Let Me Touch You I'm Destructive Wild and Crazy Elective Surgery Halfsharkalligatorhalfman- some of the weirdest shit I have heard, and yet a completely compelling story Blue Flowers (Revisited) Waiting List 1977
This album was one of the first that really opened my eyes to hip hop and made me see it in a new light. My buddy Brad introduced me to it in the late ’90s during high school. Fun album! I liked the overall beats and vocal work. The overall theme was a bit funky in the not-so-fun way, but I still enjoyed it. "Earth People" was my fave.
Oddly satisfying. I had never encountered the genre of horror/scifi rap.
I like the spacey feel and the "b" movie charm of the spoken word parts. Gives the album a campy charm that I really like. But as what often happen with many rap albums I start getting restless after 40 minutes. But that campy humour pulls me back in and I find myself having fun again. Overall one of the best rap albums I've heard. 4 stars
This is such a rhythmically intriguing hip hop odyssey, yet it is some of the most hysterically warped deviant daydreaming on record. Hearing this anywhere in public would raise some red flags for its unhinged depictions of moral decency. But it's such a trip and a guilty pleasure.
Yes, the porny bits are off-putting and the lyrics are juvenile, but it SOUNDS so GOOD!
I didn't use a private Spotify session. I have listened to this a few times in my life. There is a thing called nerd rock, is this nerd hip hop? I can get into this because, unlike a lot of hip hop, doesn't have a prolific use of the Nword or based on gangsta life, but aliens, time traveling and gynecology.
too long
I do love me a concept album!
Albumi #142, 09.02.2025 Dr. Octagon nimen taakse kätkeytyy Ultramagnetic MC's rap-kollektiivin perustanut Kool Keith. Dr. Octagonecologyst on Kool Keithin soolodebyytti vuodelta 1996. Albumi on varsin kelvollinen esitys. Laitetaan tarkempaan kuunteluun.
3,5
Yes! The funniest/dopest stoopid-but-played-with-a-straight-bat gonzo boom-bap nonsense. Strong recommend.
This was something else.
Christ. This is absolutely my newest guilty pleasure. It’s offensive and crass and juvenile and FUNNY. I think that’s what separates this from something like early Eminem. Early Eminem is just in it for shock value and that’s it. This on the other hand is actually funny? And stupid. I like the one skit where he just yells HES DEAD. Like it’s dumb and funny. I’m so sorry
Reveal reaction: Oh HELL yes! I used to listen to the shit out of this album, but it's been a long time. This album was never meant for general consumption, so I'm sure the overall rating is going to be dogshit, but I cannot wait to revisit this and see how it stands the test of time! It's still really good to me. A little corny at times, but still interesting and unique. I think it's a 3.5, but I'm going to give it 4 stars because I'd happily listen to it again and again.
Never heard of him before. Enjoyed this one.
Great
The album cover for Dr. Octagon's Dr. Octagonecologyst is a striking visual that perfectly encapsulates the surreal and bizarre themes of the music within. The artwork features Dr. Octagon in full medical garb, holding a skull and microphone, exuding an eerie, comic book villain vibe reminiscent of 90s Marvel aesthetics. The vibrant colors and intricate details draw the viewer in, while the juxtaposition of medical instruments and a menacing expression hints at the album's dark humor and absurdity. This cover not only captures the essence of Kool Keith's alter ego but also serves as a captivating piece of art that stands out in any collection, earning it a solid four-star rating. Album artworks rated: 7/1001 The music isn't really my thing tho.
I'm on-board with this! I really like the style of beats and rapping. It's quite funky in places, but it also veers off into weird asides, with sci-fi and spooky synths. I like the trip-hop beats and scratching. Some of it is really funny. The album as a whole is definitely quite unique, and one I'll revisit. Favourite tracks: Blue Flowers, I'm destructive.
Chad music for virgins
Kool Keith v kool. Has me looking a little sideways at MF Doom. Especially since KK has another persona named Dr. Dooom?? Full listen is fun but damn he's concocting some piezoelectric bars on these tracks. New flows absolutely wild skits.
This should have been the soundtrack to accompany many a misadventure while wondering the streets in NYC. Part sci-fi, a pinch of microdose, and throw in a halfsharkalligatorhalfman for a good listen.
There will be skits. A flow like no one else. Timeless production. Fun. Funny. Weird. Wrong (at times). Wildly influential yet sounds like nothing else.
really good old school hip hop. dj shadow remix was the cherry on top. 9/10

Some history for you: Kool Keith got his start as a rapper with the Ultramagnetic MC's, known for his oddball lyrics unlike anyone else at the time. Dan the Automator is a producer who got his start making self-released beats. Automator was one of the producers that Kool Keith mailed his solo demo tape to, which is what led to the two teaming up. With a new out-of-this-world alias in mind, Kool Keith would rap as Dr. Octagon. Dr. Octagonecologyst is not your ordinary rap album. Kool Keith's lyricism and delivery can be awkward and occasionally off-putting, but there's no denying he managed to carve out his own path amongst an era of hip-hop that was increasingly divided by East and West, all while the South was beginning to establish itself. In fact, Outkast might owe a bit of their success to the popularity of Kool Keith for making audiences more open to weirdness. Production-wise, Automator is able to provide a wide variety of sounds ranging from turntablism to moody horrorcore to hard-hitting boom bap. Working with Kool Keith likely gave him the permission he needed to experiment with different atmospheres and sounds that you wouldn't normally hear in hip hop beats. This would help launch both Kool Keith and Automator in different ways. Automator would go on to help DJ Shadow with his masterpiece Endtroducing, followed by forming Deltron 3030 with Del the Funky Homosapien, and then working on a few key Gorillaz tracks. As for Kool Keith, his solo career would see success under other aliases, such as Dr. Dooom with the album First Come, First Served, and Black Elvis with the album Black Elvis / Lost in Space. It goes to show that there is a place for weirdos and freaks in the world of music, it just has to be done juuuuust right.
This one was weird. Very apt album to get for Halloween with its horror inspired imagery and samples. I'd describe the album as something between a bad trip and a fever dream. Everything is wacky and slightly insane, and very silly and unserious, but it's delivered as if it wasn't which is an interesting split. Some of the beats had a pretty wild low end on my subwoofer and I enjoyed that Standouts No Awareness Halfsharkalligatorhalfman
People beware! The real good albums are after 1001 is finished. The cuts out are the best. 4
Fun, enjoyable
I really like the production. Dan the Automator who in know from Deltron. 3.6 on this.
Some quirky black humour which is certainly entertaining in the beginning, but it palls by the end. The album's focus point is the quite surreal lyrics but I struggled to hear a lot of them. Dr Octagon uses lots of horror-esque sound effects and displays great imagination with creating pictures in sound. But ultimately the lack of melody/singing meant the album feels incomplete or lacking in some way. A bit like a curry without garlic. I think I'll stick to the other voodoo doctor Dr John

This was way better then expected. A little weird to call yourself a gynaecologist from outer space but still a great record. All hail to the night Q-Bert!
Really cool that Keith is getting recognized on this list. There are other underground rap legends I would have gone for personally, but any presence at all is a shock when I'm sure the makers of the list were itching to put six more Who live cuts on. Production by Dan the Automator kicks some fucking ass, and Keith is fantastic on the mic. I'm not super familiar with his work, though, so I was not prepared for all the porn samples, an apparent staple of his work. A name like "Dr. Octogonecolygyst" probably should have tipped me off, but tracks like Girl Let Me Touch You are relentless. In spite of this, the album never lost me. It's undoubtedly uncomfortable, but it's engaging.
There's so much of this that I really like. The production is just fucking rad. I wish I'd known about this as a teen, it would've given me a much better point of reference for hip-hop and rap than what was on the radio/MTV at the time. The choices of samples and the arrangements are much like what I would want to do today and lyrically, it's avoids to empty materialism or the macho violence and misogyny of most rap before or since while also not being as serious and messaged as the socially conscious rap that was more or less the primary alternative to gangsta rap. That being said, some of the lyrics get pretty silly and juvenile. But it's still cool. I dig this. Great tracks. Great production. Original lyrical content. Excellent.
kind of conflicting, the beats and production are so cool and ahead of their time, but the lyrics definitely leave quite a bit to be desired. they're just kind of lame, without that much interesting to say and one thing i can never stand in hip hop of any era is an over reliance on repetitious lyrics. I'm not all that bothered by the content-- he's playing a character, 90s hip hop had a lot of content like this, whatever-- but the character is the only thing there, he's not saying anything novel or interesting, he's just inhabiting a marginally interesting character. but if i just threw this on and paid no attention to the actual lyrics, then that's some good music
Good, funny, unusual, and unexpected
Whoa, this is a big underground classic. Makes it even more puzzling that Madvillainy isn't included, right? Anyway, this is a persona of rapper Kool Keith, and I can't say I know much Kool Keith outside of Dr. Octagon. But I've heard this one a few times before and really enjoy some other Dr. Octagon stuff as well. It's weighed down a bit by the skits, that's for sure, but I'm saving about half of the songs. "Blue Flowers" is such an earworm track, my favorite for sure. Awesome album. Favorite tracks: Blue Flowers, No Awareness, Technical Difficulties, Dr. Octagon, Wild and Crazy, Blue Flowers Revisited, Waiting List, 1977. Album art: Really love this one, it's a sort of mad scientist doctor examining a skull, but he himself is also a skeleton. The art style is perfect. 4.5/5
Some solid flows. East coast vibes to me?
