Pretty funky. Kool Keith is pretty "kool"
Generally not into rap, hip hop at all. But this "concept" and humour reminded me of Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, and that helped me to continue to listen with some degree of interest. Trip Hop, hah! "Oh shit, there's a horse in the hospital" 😝 "Cause I never dug disco" ☺️ There's a worrying fascination with rectum on this album. 🙄
this listmaker is a hip hop head for sure. unlike Jungle Brothers, this is 90's underground and def has a had a lasting effect. there is a track called 3000 and the whole vibe reminds me of Deltron 3030 which comes after this. a song like Earth People has this otherworldly style that is reminiscent of MF DOOM which again, comes later than 1996. I know its Kool Keith trying to do material under another name, but the fact remains that a punk, subversive approach to rap was shaping at this time. the term heady rap is the name of the game here. Do you remember Deep Puddle Dynamics? No? the scene blew the fuck up after something like this and this sets a template that was carried over to the next decade. this is mostly context for how long and far rap had gone into commercialization that underground, though following the steps of pioneers, became the less recognized technique, and Keith clearly understands this. this would be 4, but i don't have that direct connection, so i say 3/5. scratching's evolution is visible. I'm all about button pushing when both sides of the aisle can get pissed. to me, Girl Let Me Touch You and I'm Destructive is in the punk style of talking from the perspective involved in the theme of this song, (I'm the villain). Halfsharkalligatorhalfman almost makes it 4 cuz i love sharks. its a winner for me for sure, absolutely something that people with their ear to the underground triumph.
Too much scratching otherwise might be really good.
Listened to this loudly in public and probably shouldn't have. It was pretty good despite the sleazy start. Decent find.
I thought this was gonna be a metal album so you can imagine my surprise! The rhymes were cool but the production is what really made the project for me. It’s something about 90s boom bap beats that just make hip-hop sound good.
Old school underground hip-hop beats, feels similar to early MF DOOM albums. The beats however are not as strong, and the flow isn't as good. The concept is probably tight but it's hard for me to pay attention to that
Good hip hop but a little too long.
Idk some of the songs were great but the overall theme and the skits were horrible. The “a visit to the gynecologist” track is some of the worst shit I’ve ever heard. To add to that I lost some interest in the second half. But the production and rapping on the first half was good enough and interesting enough to keep some points on this thing. Favorite track - blue flowers 6/10
Well yes, I like this one better than the hiphop-albums so far. It's got much more variation. 'I'm destructive' is really okay, even mentioning Dutch death metal band Gorefest! However, it's way too long like so many albums of this era.
This was pretty decent, but not as good as yesterday's Ghostface Killa. The beats were pretty good, I was less excited by the rapping. A middle-to-high three.
Just not appropriate for work but otherwise not bad. Old school rap can sometimes be great but this one just ok for me.
Liked the beats more than the lyrics
Three tracks in and it's already amazingly unique. The flow on Dr. Octagon sounds like Eminem before Eminem. Is Halfsharkalligatorhalfman the first manbearpig? Half man, half bear, half pig?
Whew that intro track was not a great start, but after that I enjoyed the album enough. I didn’t pay close attention to the lyrics, so that could be why I liked it.
Fine. I liked “earth people” and “blue flowers,” but the song that actually made me sit up, my clear favorite, was “bear witness,” which barely has any lyrics. Maybe says something about something, that.
Dr. Octagon is not a recommended by the board of OBGYNs. I do like the astronomical references but the production skills are light years ahead of the lyricist's. Mostly, the juvenile style of Kool Keith does not land with me. Not much rhyming, poor delivery, and lame content. Skits are hit or miss. Now on the sound side, The Automater and DJ QBert kill it on the boards/turntables with a little help from the Kut Masta himself, Mr. Kurt. Revisiting "Blue Flowers" was a good call and the album finishes with KK's strongest work. I would love a remake of this album with a skilled MC like Deca or the late-great Zumbi. Doctagon gets a 2.58 with the production team doing all the heavy lifting.
A lot more interesting than most the hip hop we've had on here and definitely a precursor to stuff I like. The flows must have been really stood out at the time, much more complex than the standard. Whole doctor framing seemed a bit pointless as did the little skits but it wasn't egregious. Not sure there was enough here to bring me back for another listen but decent all that same.
I'm not sure I've listened to psychedelic hip-hop before. Much of this is utter nonsense - all manner of medical procedures are mentioned, colourfully. Drosophila also get a mention (although, said with an extra i). Humorous throughout. Girl Let Me Touch You was probably the most traditional song, which isn't to say it was the worst one. The skits were weak unless they led into a song, when they ended up being quite funny. Certainly a different album.
Interesting DJing, but the flow could use some work. There were times I was absolutely grooving to this and other times I was ready for it to be over. It is a touch long at 65 minutes anyway. Beats were good, but the tempo wasn't really my style. Good for a lowish 3.
That was lyrically one of the strangest albums I have ever listened to. The beats were pretty psychadelic though and really kept me engaged. But some of the singing was really freaking me out. Hard one to rate so ill go with a 3
With what I think is a lisp, Kool Keith lays down strange and sci-fi bars over old-school beats. The narrative follows what I think is a doctor who has very unorthodox and bizarre treatments, and bizarre is the perfect way to describe Kool Keith's way of going about things. The album's shocking charm starts to die down at the halfway mark, the point where I just wanted to get the album over with. This album isn't my cup of tea, but I can definitely get its appeal.
I'm torn...I loved the music, struggled with the dated juvenile and sleazy lyrics.
I was assigned a GZA album yesterday. This is more my thing. Very cool
Much better than expected. Not quite a 4 though.
I had never heard of this before and based on the weird name and weird beginning I thought I was in for a long night that would inevitably end in a 1 or 2, but it hit a groove and was definitely more listenable than I expected.
Liked the weird scientific aspect and thought there were some good lyrics with some enjoyable humour. Did drag a little and some moments were very painful, however, especially some of the skits
Maturity of a 14 year old, raps are tight, beats are aight.
I didn't like it, I didn't dislike it. It's too long.
Rating: 7/10 It's cheesy and some of the choruses are horrendous but the production is really cool and rapping quite good as well.
Never heard of this artist, and I'm usually pretty well-versed in the world of 90's hip-hop. I'm immediately getting heavy Deltron 3030 vibes here, and that's likely due to Dan "The Automator" Nakamura being on production. He would later work with Delton 3030 and produce their self-titled album, which I adore (and will probably submit to this list once I'm finished). Back to the present album, the overall theme plays a role in the aforementioned feeling as well, as this is very much a concept album (and very much abstract and surreal at that). An "extraterrestrial, time-traveling gynecologist and surgeon" is pretty zany to begin with, but I think the production and lyrical chops (from Kool Keith) should be focused on more here. Shining in some moments, while being downright disturbing in others, "Dr. Octagonecologyst" is somewhat...uneven in a sense. Great production and talent like mentioned before, but the concept can be hit or miss for most listeners and goes on a bit too long. An interesting entry to say the least.
NOt bad, quite fun , relaeased that same year Doc Gyneco realeased his first album
Never heard of this band. Some weird songs and lyrics, but overall it was ok.
Weird but cool vibe I guess. Gives me 30 rock Tracy Morgan vibes
I want to love Kool Keith's music more than I actually do. I'm glad he's in my world and hip hop would be a million times better if he wasn't such an outlier but I don't play his records very often if I'm honest.
This collection has some seriously obscure-seeming and oddball albums in it, especially with the rap/hip-hop genre, and this album certainly falls into this weird Bermuda Triangle of musical experiments. I liked it that the music itself is more eclectic and creative than what we've been getting from other hip-hop albums in this collection (very much *not* gangsta style in any way), and there's something to be said for a concept album based on a bizarre time-traveling alien gynecologist character, but I'm not sure the whole is really greater than the product of its strangely-fitting parts (the juvenile parts, though, are generally offset by surprisingly high-brow chatter in songs like "No awareness", "Technical difficulties" or "Dr. Octagon"). Highlights for me were "3000" (made me think of MC 900ft Jesus), "Blue flowers" (both the original (including a pretty trippy video) and the "revisited" version) and "I'm destructive". I really wanted to give this album four stars, simply for what feels like a very unique approach to hip-hop/rap, and to reward Kool Keith for his off-the-wall lyrics, Dan Nakamura for great production, and DJ Q-Bert's amazing scratching, but something--and I'm not sure what--just didn't quite work as well as I wanted it to. Sorry guys!
Interesting but not really my thing
I'm not really sure what to say about this one. It's not unlistenable (in the right frame of mind). It's also not anywhere near one of the top rap albums that I'd recommend someone listen to. It's probably a lower 3 than some of my other 3's.
90'er hiphop, lidt eksperimenterende, skør storyline
Not sure about this one. Varies from being good to just downright too weird for me. Not sure about all the sexual/porn references, but having read up about the concept I can appreciate it more.
6/10
I loved this era of weirdo rap. Highly influential to Odd Future et al
J’ai tenté de voir au-delà du supposé humour, mais c’était vraiment difficile pour moi de saisir en quoi ça se démarquait d’autres œuvres hip hop
Super cool album cover and some real interesting ideas here. The humor is definitely present and the beats are good. Not sure I’d go back to this one too much due to the large presence of skits. The scratching on here is really good too. This just makes me really hope that Deltron 3030 is also on the list. Favorites were No Awareness, Blue Flowers, and I’m Destructive.
Meh. Didn't mind it. Didn't care for it either.
Point off for Misogyny. The flow and rhymes were of course top notch, the production was good for 90's gangster rap but I really could have used some melodic breaks.
Well, this was a hell of an experience. Thematically, this is quite the unusual and strange combination, I mean, just the description alone is insane - homicidal, extraterrestrial, time-traveling gynecologist and surgeon, wtf. The beats are raw, minimal, trip hop, funky, space sci-fi, and at times horror oriented. There are also a lot of quite graphic porn and disease references, some of the skits are also just samples of porn scenes. One of the most impressive things about the album is the vocabulary. You have heard hundreds of albums which rap about women, drugs and violence. But have you heard an album which raps about space travel, surgical procedures and aliens? I don't think so. The flow and the delivery are top notch, they convey the message and fit in perfectly with the beats. Rapping is erratic, asynchronous and kind of progressive sounding, taking the technique to a new level. There are multiple patterns used, so you can never guess what's coming next. The major downside of the album for me are the overly graphical scenes of sex and different kinds of diseases. I get that this is the main theme of the album, and would go on to be the main theme for Kool Keith, but for me it's just too much and I don't think these over the top elements gave the album anything positive. I think most people would appreciate the art and the good parts of the album way more, have the profanities been toned down or removed all together, while still keeping the same themes. The guy can still be a doctor, just not a gynecologist surgeon. One of the things I didn't like as much are the choruses, which felt bland and repetitive. On almost all of the songs they are just 2-3 word phrases, followed by another word, and then repeated over and over 4-5 times, with no special rhythm or purpose. But this does have it's purpose, considering the album can be classified as abstract hip-hop as well, breaking the mold. All in all, I am happy that I listened to this album. Even though it has it's flaws, it's still a technically great album and has a lot going for it. Also, you are quite unlikely to find sci-fi hip-hop lyrics at this level. Would give it 3.5 stars if I could.
Lyrically hit-or-miss but stellar production.
I was a teenager (in Australia) in the 1980s, and loved hip hop. I eagerly consumed the tiny amount of hip hop that was available in Australia. It wasn't much, but I picked up Run DMC (who I saw at the Hordern Pavillion in 1988) and Public Enemy (who I also saw live the following year, I think, supported by Eric B. and Rakim), and Ice-T (at the Enmore Theatre), and the Beastie Boys (Selinas, Coogee Bay, 1992). But then came gangsta rap, which lost me. The sound was cool, but the lyrics were just awful. The glorification of misogyny and homophobia and violence just made me sick. And I tried, but the malign influence of gangsta throughout the 90s really turned me off a lot of mainstream rap. So, while I remember reading about Dr Octagon, I never hunted this down to listen to before now. And this is much more to my taste. It's weird and funny and surreal and alien, with a funky, strange, lo-fi production to match. I could live without the semi-pornographic moments, and I still think that skits are never a good idea on any record (apologies to De La Soul), but I regret having slept on this record for nearly 30 years. 3.5 stars, rounding down for skits and occasionally puerile 'humour'.
This is... something. It's kinda cool, I guess. Also kinda boring. Also kinda rapey. There are actually a handful of decent tracks on here but the album is just way too long. I do actually appreciate the weirdness of it, though, even in terms of flow. There's no reason that "Earth people, New York and California / Earth people, I was born on Jupiter" should work as a chorus. But... somehow, he makes it work? Frankly, I don't think I'll ever listen to this again, but it's transgressive in a way that I have to respect at least a bit, even if there's a lot of cringe here too. Fav tracks: Earth People, No Awareness, I'm Destructive
The production and scratching on this are phenomenal. The lyrics are a total dumpster fire. In principle, I'm not opposed to the whole alien body-horror theme, but the nonsense lyrics don't really carry it.
I hadn't heard of this but I was pretty excited when I heard Dan the Automator was involved. This was alright but it did less than I expected. A bit experimental feeling but also a bit flat. Didn't dislike listening to it but doubt I'd come back.
The vocals don't lock into some of the tracks musically as tight as I like in hip hop, but interesting enough to not repel me. DJ Qbert is putting in the work. The flow is getting close to Wesley Willis at times. Ooo DJ Shadow. This probably had a chance to hook me more if I had found it around the time it came out. The lyrical content isn't catching me right now. Some similar vibes to stuff lkke Jurassic 5 or Black Star at times Makes sense that an instrumental version got released. As an album this was cohesive, cool art, sonically pretty good, a few too many tracks. I appreciate that this is out there and inspired people. I don't see myself coming back, tho I might give the instumental a shot sometime.
3/5. A kind of gross word-vomit rap album, with a weird concept of an sci-fi alien doctor who is not qualified to be a doctor. The beats and samples are excellent, droning bass and low quality drums create an eerie feeling, kind of like abandoned halls of a hospital. The lyrics are expressive but definitely a lot for one whole album. Maybe a song here and there that is extreme would be okay but this is a lot in every song. Not my favorite front to back but the music is respectable, the lyrics though are little rough. Best Song: I'm Destructive, Earth People, Blue Flowers
This was okay.
I was using my ex mother n laws job, pretending to be an old neighbor of mine to get my daughter free day care...though in the dream sh was still 26. Even though I look nothing like this neighbor, I believe his name is Isaac, everyone was treating me like him. His job had to do with a complex board game that, at least in my dreams, I was familiar with. I guess it was a cross between the pc game civilization and a combination of the board games Risk and axis and allies. I went to pick my daughter up and inside this place was fantastic food. I started scheming ways with my daughter to spend more time with my daughter that turned into getting free food from this place. Everything was based on music somehow.
Un bon petit album de hip hop US des années 90, rien de magique mais ça s'écoute bien même si ça parle toujours de la même chose (de cul).
This one is a bit more palatable for me than most of the other hip hop albums that have come through. I suppose that's because this one leans quite a bit into trip hop which I have found I like. Still overall I would listen again but I'm not sure I would seek this one out.
Some questionable themes but unique in its vision. Would not let my child listen to
Not as smart as it thinks it is.
3.45
Saw Kool Keith back in '00 when he opened for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. It was OK, but not amazing. The crowd didn't love it so Flea came on stage to lecture us. Still just OK, sorry Flea.
I'm a proper sucker werid, geeky hip hop. I'm a proper sucker for Dant the Automator production. And Qbert on the scratches helps. I like it. The lyrical content at times is questionable at best, so it loses stars for that. Deltron 3030 is absolutely a better evolution of this sound from Dan the Automator.
Funny.
Just fine background music while cooking dinner
I like all the scritchy scratchies
3.3 I quite like a bit of unserious rap when it's like this - decent beats, decent rhymes, pretty chilled out. The juvenile humour of the album starts to get a bit tiring after a couple listens though, which is a shame as the less "I'm a horny alien gynaecologist" parts of the album are actually pretty strong. Saved a few of them down, will likely not come back to the rest.
I wanted to hate this. I do hate the childishness of some of the lyrics and the intro is obviously one of the worst things ever recorded. But the music, for the most part, won me over and I quite enjoyed it. Obviously 20-30 minutes too long - fuck, this really dragged. But not as bad as I'd thought it might be.
This was fun! Kool Keith is a big weirdo
I can't condone large sections of the lyrical content, but this is weird and creative. Much stranger than I expected. I think it might be quite addictive.
Back to back with A Tribe Called Quest, it just wasn't quite as good. Still solid, still enjoyed it.
Avaruusgyne herranjestas… solid sylkemistä 3/5
Weird and wonderful
Not bad but not really for me.
Like all albums produced by Dan the Automater… I want to like it more. The rapping is good enough and the production is… good? I just don’t know why this stuff doesn’t click with me more.
I didn't pay attention to the lyrics, but the beats are good and it is a groovy album, I quite liked it.
Some pretty good beats. Some ok songs but I think conceptually artists like MF Doom and CzarFace are much more must listen than Dr Oct
Weird how many sci-fi hip-hop albums are out there. Not bad, but overstays its welcome a bit
Just a LONG arse rap album with a few little weird bits 3/5
bra rap emellanåt men det är för långt. tåls att lyssnas på igen.
I love the beats for sure! And the nerdy, sci fi lyrics are cool. Some of it is a little much, but overall, I like it.
Simile al precedente, ma meno interessante.
This is easily the best hip-hop album about gynecology one has ever heard. Fun and somewhat interesting, but ultimately silly and jejeune and pretty harmless (like so many skits from the Baroque era of hip-hop). Pains one to say it, but it's really De La Soul's fault – having game show-skitted out 3 Feet High and Rising, we get the likes of this. Again, not terrible, but skits very much get in the way. One likes some of the sepia-toned touches (e.g., strings on "Blue Flowers"). Flows are fine, samples/beats/beds are fine (likably minimalist) but anyone who can't commit to (or even get) the concept, this reaches dullness and irrelevance pretty quickly. Same problem with Wu Tang's Kung Fu-inflected efforts. "Destructive" and "WIld and Crazy" are among the quality cuts.
Meh. Not for me but good just the same.
5/10 Who let their kid in the recording booth? 10-23-2024
Pretty good album, nice rhythm and rhymes for someone I have never heard of. Certainly sticks to the kinda vulgar theme
Bardzo przyjemny, ale oprócz blue coś tam bez wyróżniających się kawałków. Poprawne 3/5
Not as good as 20 year old me thought. Still fun for nostalgia.
A hip-hopera about a space-age, super-hero gynecologist? Of course. Not sure the concept adds much but the music is likable throughout, though there's about three or four worth of cuts that are absolutely necessary. Sorta fun and cool. Sorta silly and sophomoric.
Bit too west coast
was a weeeird one for sure. Glad I checked it out but ismt gonna be a favourite
Yeah. This is fun
Этот альбом, на мой взгляд, устарел
Some good beats throughout. But for me it was a little lyrically lacking... was this a starter in the experimental/alternative hiphop scene? It's all I can imagine that would get it in this list as it's not a patch on some other hiphop albums I have in my rotation...
Ok, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it was gonna be. There’s some things that were weird in like a bad way, but some of the weird worked. My husband and I have been walking around all day singing “Half shark alligator half man” to each other, so there’s that I guess.
New one on me. Not bad though
I really wanted to like this more than I ended up liking it. There is some good to be had in here, for example, this is definitely a progenitor of the yung lean/lil b ethos - where it doesn’t matter how atonal you are, it only matters that you’re rapping with personality. But yeah, I wish this album stuck its landing a bit more. The shock value samples/lyrics aren’t that zany, the sick & twisted aesthetics are just passable. Feels like the same 3-4 things are being brought up over and over again. Interesting guy, but this just doesn’t do it for me like I hoped it would
Like the proffesor Hexagon or indeed general Pentagon, Dr Octogon was very middleagon for 90s hip hop. Loved the cover though
Listado completo aquí: https://www.whosampled.com/album/Dr.-Octagon/Dr.-Octagonecologyst/ En 1996 se publicaron otros buenos discos: Los superiores Endtroducing.... de DJ Shadow, The Score de The Fugees, Odelay de Beck además de los Coming up de Suede, Being there de Wilco, Murder balladas de Nick Cave, Black love de Afghan Whigs, Emperor tomato ketchup de Stereolab, Harmacy de Sebadoh, Millions now living will never die de Tortoise, If your´re feeling sinister de Belle and Sebastian, Amazing disgrace de The Posies, Take it from the man! de The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Dust de Screaming Trees, 1977 de Ash... incluso New adventures in Hi-Fi de REM, el debut de Placebo, Everything must go de Manic Street Preachers, Pre-millenium tension de Tricky, Now I Got Worry de jon Spencer Blues Explosion, High/Low de Nada Surf, First Band on the Moon de The Cardigans, How I quite smoking de Lambchop, Walking Wounded de EBTG
Very much a 'late night' album. Lo-fi beats, flowing raps and some killer samples laid over a concept around a sleazy doctor. Noice.
Nice, healthy dose of surrealism to kick off the week.
Du vieux rap, c'est tout
Some tracks theme are hella weird. Some of the more conventional ones are a enjoyable listen.
decent sound, but crass at times. Probably won't listen again.
I remember this vaguely from the time due to being released on Mo Wax in UK, had a nice old school feeling to It…
Some nice stuff there! Good flow, good beat. Some stuff like "a visit to the gynecologist" were just so experimental that I don't classify them as songs so I didn't rate the album now,
Did you know that Dr. Octagon can treat moose bumps and gorilla acne!? It is so weird that it almost makes me get over the hip hop crap. But the lyrics... oh wow
It was quite fun and funky, but I do not think I want to be listening to an album about gynecology at work (also that bit kinda felt a bit weird)
90s hip hop sensibilities at its core but with a lot of interesting variations. On the edges. Still not really my thing but I can respect creativity.
I was so worried about listening to this because of the comments - you’d think this album slapped someone’s baby. Methinks yall don’t like rap. That being said, this was just OK
This guy loves butt stuff. Nice beats but the concept feels exploitative.
Geggjað stuff .. .
Another cool 90’s album. Felt pieces of the hip hop in Reanimation and also on Jet Set Radio Future. That latch brothers sound. Very chill and underground.
Kool Keith apparently has at least 58 alter egos. I hope some of them are less obnoxious than Dr. Octagon. He’s described as a “homicidal, extraterrestrial, time-traveling gynecologist and surgeon.” The fixation on immature sexual humor and doo-doo follows. Collaborating with Dan “The Automator” Nakamura and DJ Qbert should have produced a much more enjoyable album. Nakamura went on to better things after this helped launch his career, and gets deserved recognition for his role in Gorillaz. But DJ Qbert is the highlight of “Dr. Octagonecolygist,” and his revolutionary work here and with Rock Steady Crew and Invisibl Skratch Piklz are worthy of more acclaim. Beyond the innovative scratching and spinning of the turntablist and some hints of a unique and developing producer, there’s not much else I want to remember about Dr. Octagon.
I appreciate Dr. Octagon’s unique approach, his alien concept, and all that. For standing out amongst the sea of shoot-em-up gangsta rap, this album deserves five stars. However for my personal listening pleasure, it’s nice to hear, but I won’t be returning anytime soon.
Automatic star for pushead album art. Classic ug sounding 90’s hip hop. Beats outweigh lyrical skills by a lot.
Like a worse MF Doom, but not bad
The lyrics are a bit weird at times but I dig the music/beats/production and the rapping/flow itself. There's some good ideas in there and you can tell that he/they aren't afraid to just try some weird stuff. "Earth People" is like a kid in high school taking his first sample and trying to rap over it- there's seemingly no EQ or compression on the vocals, and it sits so high over the beat that it's kind of weirdly good and catchy? Then you hear "Blue Flowers" which is cool, reserved, intriguing, and laid back like a Big L track. I ended up really liking this. Solid 3.5/5. In the context of 1001 albums though it's cool but not really earth (people) shattering or genre-defining enough to really grab me. It's way deeper than you think though.
the rap style on this was really fun and sketchy to listen to i thought it was interesting, i haven’t heard anything like it before, it was a bit long but it ran well
3.5
Vulgar is probably the best way of describing this album, for better and for worse. Was interesting though. A low 3 stars.
3.2 - It was pleasant to listen to, quite liked it. Not sure what else
Lately everything seems to sound like 3.5 stars to me, this was much the same. I liked the conceptuality and there was some good wordplay - almost reminded me of RAP Ferreira at times - but most tracks felt like they were missing something to take them to the next level. The skits were kinda fun in their lewdness. Fave Track: Dr Octagon 3.4/5
3.5
Decent but dirty. 3.8
Zuerst etwas zu aufgeregt, aber beim zweiten hinhören gefällt der Aufbau des Albums als Story.
6/10
it’s strange
3.5 Taking a look at the comments on this album and it’s interesting to learn how many of y’all are prudes! Horror rap rocks and this is one of the best ones, “Blue Flowers” is one of the best songs ever maybe.
As much as I’ve always wanted to love this album it just doesn’t do it for me. No doubt it’s influential and weird and respect for all that.
- I appreciate Kool Keith's commitment to the bit. Every track, including the skits, follows suit. - Was not expecting so many physics references in "No Awareness." They are just used as jargon, but still. - DJ Qbert's scratching is often the highlight. The backing tracks are never bad, but the beat can get a bit monotonous. - Kool Keith is capable of mixing up the rhythms, but these tracks still blend together. I like the emotionally detached style, but that does not help.
Yllättyin kyllä, että tää on räppiä :D Aika humoristista, mutta hyvät biitit ja flow. Yllättävä levy tällä listalla, aivan tuntematon artisti itselle. Parhaat: Blue Flowers, Dr. Octagon, 3000
Very conceptual and out of left field when it came out. Inspirational for many rappers.
Another 90's rap album. One of the better ones
Overlong and juvenile but also funny and creative, catchy and influential. There is definitely a lot worse on this list
really liked it at the beginning but it felt very long and i lost interest
Interesting!
Certainly quite odd and I can see where MF DOOM got some of the ideas from. The PC brigade of course are out in force on this one but it's pretty average rapping although some of the concepts are certainly innovative.......
3.5
it has its place, but this brand of 90s rap isnt for the regular play
Inspiration for Jurassic 5 deserves some recognition, but the overtly sexual subject matter gets old after a while.
Not being an aficionado of this genre, it's for me to say precisely why this is worthy of inclusion on this list. But it does have a good rhythm and some witty lyrics. Not safe for the children, for sure.
I don’t know, I actually liked it but tbh I didn’t spend any time actually listening to the lyrics, so maybe that’s the best approach?
Clearly, a rap project where self-editing would have strengthened the whole offer. The last leg of this *long* record would have benefited from the erasure of some useless cuts ("Halfsharkalligatorhalfman", "Girl Let Me Touch You", which is in poor taste both musically and lyrically...). The first leg is also a little bumpy, and Kool Keith's rap flow is a little weird at times (plus I can't see what folks see in "Earth People" and its ridiculous vocal hook). Fortunately, the rest of the album is a shining example of the wonders of "alternative hip hop". There are lots of great cuts in the album, too many of them to name them all. "Blue Flower", especially, is a gem. Guess I'm in two minds about this inclusion. Amazing how the reviews in this section see very different things in *Dr. Octagonecologyst*. Some people focus on the music and the artistry. Others are shocked by the "transgressive" lyrics. Here the discrepancy goes beyond usual personal likes or dislikes about hip hop in general. Maybe why Kool Keith sort of dimissed the album. And Dan The Automator went on to release far more impressive projects later on. Under that light, I won't include this record in my own list. But that doesn't mean I can't fully enjoy 75% of it. 3/5 for the purposes of this list of essential albums. 8/10 for more general purposes (5+3) Number of albums left to review: 177 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 358 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 206 Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 261 (including this one)
Pretty good production and beats, but the weird samples of porn dialogue detract from relistening to this on any occasion, and honestly it’s a little long and the vibe is a little monotonous. Again, the porn dialogue interstitials, especially "A Visit to the Gynecologyst", I feel like this doesn't add anything to the album.
I'm not really into rap but this album was definitely an interesting experiance. wacky lyrics
I’m convinced the people here who rate this a 1 are just rap haters. Sure it’s like extra terrestrial horror core porn at times, but the concept and atmosphere this album creates is sick. I was actually pleasantly surprised with how chill it is given the horrible ratings
This is so 90s and so limp bizkit and eminem coded. Why was the world shocked at the profanity if this literally has a time travelling obgyn tryna have sex with his patients its wild its fun and its unique. dated yeah but I love plunderphonics and DJ shadow and this album is filled to the brim with that old school hip hop vibe love this. perfect 3 from me
Pretty enjoyable 90s rap album.
Some great moments, but some things just weird me out. 3/5
This was interesting as a rap based concept album but also cartoonish boucing between clever and sophmoric. Musically interesting use of vintage sounds but probably not going to listen again.
Very different but surprisingly okay.
Very unique album. I'll admit some of the weirder parts went over my head, but I did find some enjoyable tracks. I'm sure with more listens I'd enjoy it more, this is definitely not for everyone. But I definitely found it solid. Top tracks: Real Raw, Bear Witness, Halfsharkalligatorhalfman
Some really great tracks on this, with a bunch of unnecessary interludes.
I liked this better than most classic hiphop but still very annoying at some points.
Not really my thing, but I can appreciate it. I like the dark, trip hop elements. His rhyme scheme is interesting at times. I remember when this came out, but this is my first listen. 3.0
An interesting album. Not my first time listening to Dr Octagon, and I enjoyed listening once in it's entirety. For me, a lot of the music composition is good, but as an overall album, not for me. The pacing for every track is laid back, with no real change of cadence. 3/5.
The beats immediately reminded me of Deltron 3000 and sure enough, I realize that Dan the Automator produced this before he did Deltron and Handsome Boy Modeling School. I loved those albums when in college. I’’ll give this a re-listen now that I know about it. The lyrics were a bit to cartoony for my tastes. Dr. Octagon definitely got his degree at Hollywood Upstairs medical college with Dr. Nick. Medocal
This was pretty cool, but I think it would take a long time to really unpack everything here. It feels unfair to give something like this a rating because of that, but i guess i will just cop out and give it 3 stars.
Weird and old enough to be fun. J5 meets The Phenomenauts? Not true enough to it's conceit to earn a Sun Ra comparison except in lack.
Was "ok"
curti as batidas, mas é um álbum que soa igual do começo ao fim
Production great, rest of it crass
Hip Hop classic, not my style, but worth having listend to it
perempi konsepti albumi kuin the who - tommy ablum. anaaliesque . on mahdollista että kyseinen tohtori on sortunut epäeettisiin hoitomenetelmiin... hullupoika123, hulvatonhullunkurinen absurdisti ikuisesti kestävä tematiikka... vihdoinkin klassista musiikkia listalla. vivaldi, mozart, dr octagon... kuka ei kuulu??? vivaldi.. hän ei puhunut paskasta musiikissaan... blue flowers
FAVO: earth People
A bit of a fun album yeah. Kool Keith is a bizarre artist and this album didn’t disappoint on that front. I just don’t think I’m as crazy about Dan The Automator’s production anymore. Solid 3
Love the trip hop production - great beats and nice spacey atmosphere. Few things have ages as poorly as scratching though, and this album has way too much of it. The flow is smooth and playful, building up the stupid character of Dr Octagon and his porno-bio-political universe. It's definitely more rap for rock critics who prefer a dense lyrical concept album over the actually popular hit-oriented party rap.
Middle of the road rap, not really getting anywhere with its theme.
Love the feel and sound of this but found the peurile ‘sexy’ lyrics and skits offputting.
A homicidal, extraterrestrial, time-traveling gynaecologist. Disclaimer: I don't think the good Doctor is actually a Doctor. Great turntablism, juvenile lyrics. Strangely addictive.
Lyrically this is bonkers in a creepy messed-up super creative way. I can certainly see why some people will hate this. But I liked it
This album set out to be weird and met its goal. I wasn't particularly impressed, but I do like that this album deviates from the typical rap attitude of the 90s (just to add some variety to what is possible in the genre). Halfsharkalligatorhalfman made it on to one of my playlists, it's funny.
Love Kool Keith, but this isn’t his best work. Still good though. Somewhere between 3 and 3.5 stars.
I’m a big fan of MF DOOM, and you can really see this as inspiration for that. The character and production style all read like DOOM predecessors, and reading about the impact of this album makes it clear that this really helped invigorate the underground scene. I don’t love it more than any of DOOM’s work, the writing isn’t on that level, but I still think it is quite listenable bar a few of the cringier, goofier segments.
I was always curious about Kool Keith but never got around to listening to anything by him. It was pretty good. I think Dan The Automator is the real star; his body of work speaks for itself.
Täysin uus räppimaailmasta mulle, oli hyvä
Good beats and production
Really good except the filler. The skits, the nonsense. Another album that could have trimmed the fat of excess chorus and skits and been phenomenal.
A cool creative project! I had no idea this was Kool Keith. Very out there. I prefer his other projects, but this was some quality 80s hip hop 3
Interesting, weird album
Very horny interstitials
Had not ever heard of this and am just vaguely familiar with Kool Keith. This was a great listen on a chill lazy rainy Saturday afternoon. Definitely recommend.
Juvenile lyrics that are dancing a fine line between edgy and schoolboyish. The beats are OK. It's almost as if Dr Octagon is trying to be a bit ICP, but not really knowing where to go with it. I'm not mad at having had to listen to it, but I won't be listening to it again.
I have finished my review. Dr. Octagon is a horn dog with lyrical raps. Nice beats. A lot of doctor fantasies. The skits were wild, and the musical direction is myriad. There’s heavy guitar in I’m Destructive. Sci fi chants in halfsharkalligatorhalfman. This is probably the most well put together mating call of the bunch: https://open.spotify.com/track/2UDEXruzPzqxXjCQTdzh1I?si=CZDApPxWSaKqTTrg-CfxFA
This is definitely some of the crazier shit that's made it on the list. How the author ever heard if Dr Octogon who knows. This gets extra star for being weird, crazy, offensive and just different
It was weird. He has good flow though.
I'd never heard of this guy before. I guess he crawled so B.O.B. and Gorillaz could run. It reminded me of Cypress Hill at times too. This album was ok. A lot of the songs are catchy and I like his rapping style, but some of the lyrics were just too ridiculous/not really my style. I appreciate what he was doing with the concept and the character, but it's just so over the top. It's also super long—it just seemed to keep going and going.
The concept developed by Dr. Octagon in this album (visual concept, interludes, song themes) makes it a remarkable work. A novelty, sorry to say. I will take a long shot by saying it could be included in the same conversation with artists like Madvillian. I enjoyed it, but it still lacks something.
Favorite Tracks: Blue Flowers - Revisited Earth People Waiting List
Stupid childish humour which makes you snort,.simple but effective beats, an unusual underground sound. Feels like a pirates vhs tape of late night early 90s TV. Tastes like Cheeto fingers, sounds like skateboard wheels and smells like grinders and armpits. Not life changing and overlong but a reasonable enough experience
Intro: 7.4 3000: 9.3 I Got To Tell You:8.2 Earth People: 6.4 No Awareness: 6.9 Real Raw: 6.2 General Hospital: 6.5 Blue Flowers: 8.5 Technical Difficulties: 7.6 A Visit To The Gynecologyst: 5.8 Bear Witness: 7.3 Dr. Octagon: 8.9 Girl Let Me Touch You: 8.3 I’m Destructive: 7.8 Wild And Crazy: 7.9 Halfsharkalligatorhalfman: 6.3 Elective Surgery: 6.2 Blue Flowers-Revisited: 9.2 Waiting List - DJ Shadow/Automator Mix: 7.4 1977: 7.3
A cult classic, but on a tier below the best 90's Hip Hop albums
This was a weird album that I kind of enjoyed but never need to listen to again. Feels like a goldmine for DJs to sample.
A remarkably inventive and pretty deranged album that’s very fun at times and at other times is just too much, man. The production is fire, though I do prefer some records it influenced quite a bit more than this one, and the lyrics are just on another level, asking the important questions that other rap albums are afraid to ask like ‘what if your gynaecologist was a homicidal time traveler?’ and ‘what if you were half shark alligator half man?’
amazing production and scratching let down by an inconsistent flow, the skits seemed to last a bit too long too
I stand behind my beliefs that Kool Keith is clinically insane. I'd put this into the same musically interesting category as Wesley Willis' albums. Bizarre, profane, nonsensical, but unrefutably creative and expressive.
Science fiction beats courtesy of Dan the Automator. Lyrics all over the place but the flow is good. Earth People is menacing - I like it.
Not a big fan of the lyrics but the music was good and there was great originality in this one.
Sounds like the kind of rapper that Mike Patton would adore. I appreciate the surrealism, "lyrics as an instrument," and pretty cool beats. The puerile album concept is a big bummer though.
-okay this album title and cover are so fucking funny -never heard of this band before so i really don’t know what to expect -god i LOVE some 90’s rap i really do -i miss when there were interlude/speaking songs that were short between the other songs -very heavily enjoying a lot of these songs -is this rap i would go back and listen to again? probably not -but am i having a good time listening to this? yes! -i really like the theme they have stuck with here -overall its a solid three stars for me
Ok Rap album but not my thing
I liked the backing tracks of this, with a very cool, original, spot-on 90s sound. But I got fairly bored with it by the end, and I have to admit that I don't really like creepy sexual doctor humor much.
Interesting hip hop approach, reminiscent of early mf doom with a nice concept
Un album étrangement pas si mauvais, mais mon avis est certainement biaisé par mon amour inconditionné pour le futurist gyneco hip hop
Good beats, good flow. I'd be lying if I said I really listened to the lyrics, this was background music while I worked. Overall I would consider listening again if I was in the mood for this genre.
There are some absolutely great hip hop songs on here with great mixing and beats. There's also just as many songs that are just plain dumb with juvenile lyrics. I'm going to be generous by giving this a 3 just because it's unique although I have no interest in putting this album on ever again.
I’m not a rap fan, and I wasn’t a fan of the numerous references to rectums and vaginas, but the album has great flow and I appreciate that it sticks to a theme throughout.
Decent album. Probably 3/5. I liked blue flowers.
Blue Flowers is the best cut on here.
I get the origin but mid
Interesting and different. Never heard before.
Some fun moments. The skits are a bit silly, verging on annoying sometimes
This album reminds me of riding around very stoned in the back of my friend's station wagon in high school. there are some cool tracks, but the juvenile humor and stupid hospital interludes always irked me back then, and they still do.
What a weird album. Not a huge fan of his flow, but some songs really came in hard. You know, think I'm deciding it wasn't half bad, despite the poo poo pee pee humor.
Pretty good. Chill
Great DJing, some nice samples and bass lines but I don't know, it lacks some highlight
cool concept album sounds nice, great lyrics shoutout to halfsharkalligatorhalfman
I liked the flow of the lyrics. lt sounded off at first, but coalesced as the song went on. I just wish the content was better. Alien gynecologist from the future? And all we get are pee-pee and poo-poo jokes. Maybe I'm spoiled, listening to Black Thought / Danger Mouse on "Cheat Codes". But it just feels like he could do better. The DJ is freaking SICK, though. The scratchwork, WOW. I just wish the lyrics held up, is all.
Pleasantly surprised; thought this was going to be awful though I had no idea who the artist was or what the music was going in. The beats are awesome and Kool Keith/Dr. Octagon can rap. And yeah, the lyrics are weird or depraved, but all in the spirit of fiction. So I didn't mind it at all (better than rapping for real about slaying b*tches) especially because, again, the beats are awesome...at least half the time. 3000, Earth People, and Real Raw are all killer tracks. I'm Destructive, Halfsharkalligatorhalfman, Blue Flowers (revisited), Waiting List are also solid. But the album goes on a little long; it gets off to such a good start but then the middle is a bit ho-hum. Tightened up and capped around 45min and this could be really, really good.
Very odd lyrics, but i still enjoyed it because of the unique beats which kept me interested through the entire album
DIFFERENT THAN WHAT I HAVE LISTEND TO IN THE PAST. FYI ..... "INTRO" THE FIRST TRACK, NSFW
Like a rap fever dream. No Awareness was decent. Mainly weird.
The doctor is in and out of this world. What finesse this album has when it comes to lyrical structure. This may not be everyone’s favorite album but I was thoroughly impressed with it. The production is great, ahead of its time with the trip hop and weird sound overs. The lyrics are quick witty funny and odd. Everything you want out of an octagonacologyst. This was like madvilliany if it had a father or something like that. 7.1/10
Hard beats, good rhyme. It falls under the genre: Alternative hip hop, psychedelic rap. Never heard of this before. It has it's good points. Standouts: (Nothing is great, but many are good.) Best of the rest: 3000, Earth People, Blue Flowers, Bear Witness, I'm Destructive, "You can call 1-800-PP51 Doo Doo!" 3.5/5
Some real skill, good beats, and far better than more popular albums at the time but the oversexification of some songs and the skits really bring it down a peg
Sicuramente il più pazzo che abbia mai sentito fin ora
It was cool. It was weird. It was an interesting look into the New York underground scene. The beats were great. The doctor is so loquacious. The interlude audio from porn was not my favorite choice.
Dr. Octagonecologyst is the debut solo album by American rapper and Ultramagnetic MCs member Kool Keith, released under his alias Dr. Octagon. This hip hop album introduces listeners to Dr. Octagon, a homicidal, extraterrestrial, time-traveling gynecologist and surgeon, while sonically fusing psychedelic electronic music with trip hop, and hip hop. The amazing production was managed by Dan "The Automator" Nakamura and the cool record scratches came from DJ Qbert. Kool Keith provided the avant-garde, slightly humorous, and science fiction inspired lyrics as raps over the trip hop/hip hop beats. This was an innovative album released during the golden age of hip hop, when most artists wanted to be gangsta rappers. It stands out because Dr. Octagon decided to do things a little differently or otherworldly. Although it never charted, this album performed well commercially. Critics appreciated the raw, spooky, and heavy hip hop which was unlike any of the "run-of-the-mill" hip hop albums being produced at that time. Kool Keith went on to dislike his creation Dr. Octagon because fans wanted that to be his persona instead of just a project for a single album. I loved this unique hip hop album, even though the lyrics can be a bit zany at times. It's music you don't hear regularly and it's nice to enjoy the absurdness of it all. Great album of dope beats and interesting raps.
Way ahead of it’s time but still too long and repetitive to hold me. Feels like an album that gets more credit for being prescient than good.
Hard to rate, blend of cool verses & eerie instrumentals mixed with gross & disturbing lyrics probably won't keep it in my streaming library, but I respect it for its originality HL: "Earth People", "Blue Flowers (Revisited)", "3000", "Dr. Octagon" August 21, 2023
Sheesh. This album is cooked. If you could take the lyricism and themes, and replace them with components that don't make you squirm, this would be a fantastic album. The flows and beats throughout out are great, the tracks are diverse and the album presents as some sort of warped, cartoonish trip. As cooked as this trip is, I guess his ability to create such visceral experience is to be commended? The production samples and instrumentation are so tight throughout. The skits/songs like "a trip to the gynaecologist", are so tasteless that any layer of satire, or commentary, falls completely flat. There is some proper disgusting stuff on this, yuck. Fav track: 3000 2.5/3
What’s with the anal obsession throughout this album? Every skit and almost every verse deals with recta and anii - it’s not always terrible but it’s terribly long and very naff at times.
fine, a good car listen
There are some catchy moments on this album and it was also very unique overall. Unfortunately, it was also a little unrefined and immature for my taste.
Cool
3 punkte
Hip hop alternativo. Ni fu ni fa.
Mostly enjoyable (too long, too many butt jokes) but glad it brought back to my attention Dan the Automater of Handsome Boy Modeling School---man does that guy love Chris Elliott.
Hip hop alternativo. Ni fu ni fa.
Probably a 3.5 but rating lower
Decent enough
This shit is somehow terminally online mentally ill music before the internet was even a thing. I don't really understand the concept. The dude is a gynocologist and then he says peepee poopoo black fart balls cock penis lol sex for an hour. The horror vibes are there and it's actually pretty ahead of it's time. It sounds a lot more like 2000s rap than 90s. It's not great but it is funny and it sucks and it's good at the same time. Wild and crazy sounds a lot like a Del song. I hate skits. It's basically death grips for babies Score: 70 Art: 50
A decent hip-hop/rap album. Listened while working. Nice beats, rhythms, etc. Good groove for sure. Background record when environment warranted.
I don't really have much to say about this album. It's fine. Not bad, but not really remarkable.
Funny classic old timey rap with juvenile lyrics. The only kind of not so serious hiphop I can listen to with constant cringe-facepalm 3.3
pretty cool, spooky and weird, i could never stand those interludes though
Dit vond ik best wel cool eigenlijk!
Volgens mij is dit de rapper die ook op een paar nummers van Prodigy meedoet. Ik herken zijn stem. En dit album is best leuk, op die paar irritante sketches na die er steeds tussendoor komen.
Did not get this sadly. 6/10 Fave: Blue flowers
Filthy filthy filthy hilarious
+1 for turntablism
I've had a lot of hip hop albums recently. This is by far the weirdest and most interesting. Like an odd collage this reminds me of the Avalanches. The lyrics are bizarre and the mish mash of samples and scratching is a lot of fun. It's a shame the time travelling extraterrestrial had to be a homicidal gynecologist, but I guess it had to stay true to the violence and misogyny than so often characterises the genre. Rating: 3/5 Playlist track: Earth People Date listened: 08/04/23
An odd and occasionally perverted alt-hip hop album. Strange beats, non-sequiter rhymes and all to do with Kool Keith's alter-ego of an alien gynacologist. Sometimes great, sometimes terrible - a bit like being a gynacologist I suppose. Best Tracks: Earth People; Blue Flowers; I'm Destructive
Crude, but liked it surprisingly well. One of those albums that I had heard/known of for ages but never gotten around to listening to. 3.5/5
one of the weirder albums I've heard but didn't hate it
I think the amount of pure rapping skill on this album is quite high but I don't think some the hyper sexualized skits have aged particularly well. Overall middle of the road for me
So this is a concept album about a homicidal, extraterrestrial, time-traveling gynecologist. Any questions? Didn't think so. Class dismissed.
Vet album, maar beetje langdradig.
spess rap, men ganske bangin ca. 3,5
This was more interesting then most rap I thought. It was a bit long though.
Tough intro, some good stuff in the middle though
Truth is, I've never been a fan of Dan the Automator's work. I mean, it's probably not is fault that this album gets meandering in the second half, but I always find his productions to be cold, almost detached from any emotions. I know it's considered as a classic, it was probably the sh*t in 1996, but I can't say that this has aged very well.
Forgettable, but still pretty good.
Interessting use of scrach. Good classical sample and funny intro/outro.
A few nice moments and beats overall, but sadly flooded by too much skits in a long-winded album. I don't understand why it's so much praised.
good fun hip hop record made me giggle sanskar liked
I was really surprised by this. Had no clue what to expect. I gotta imagine there was some inspo back and forth between Dr. Octagon and MF DOOM? Maybe not but anyway i’d go 3.4
I read a Rolling Stone magazine interview with Sean Lennon and almost every answer was Dr Octagon. It weirded me out. I avoided the work of the Dr because of this. For starters, the DJ work on the album is off-tap. Q-Bert is a legend, but this is insane. Scatology and rectum references aside, this is some well crafted stuff. I enjoyed the Ultramagnetic MC's back in the day, I enjoyed this today.
90s rap similar to mike Ladd the flows are buttery 3,5
Solid indie nerd rap, but I'd rather have DOOM on here. 3 octagons out of 5 🛑🛑🛑
My tolerance for medical sex jokes was running out by the end but an interesting album nontheless
Review tbc
Inconsistent songs, odd but effective lyrical consistency
Mix this almost sci-fi-ish pornographic atmosphere with his crazy off the wall lyrics and you got yourself a very entertaining listen. Really enjoyed this, it kept me listening, not only the beats and weird flow, but just to hear the next crazy lyric. 3. TBz 1. I’m Destructive 2. Halfsharkalligatorhalfman 3. Bear Witness 4. 3000
Very silly album. Kinda bizarre. But it had me chuckling.
Listened to a couple of songs.
It was okay. Not a rap fan in general and I wasn't drawn in by the flow style. Some great beats though.
didn't listen to the words, i like the sounds
Had a tough time grading this one. On one hand there was a lot of familiar style, on the other it was super weird. Some songs were alright. Weak 3 star
Not even bad old school hip hop. I could listen to it. Call 1800pp51doodoo
Primera vez que sé de la existencia de este disco y este rapero. "3000", "Earth People", "No Awareness" o "halfsharkalligatorhalfman". Excelente rap de los 90 que merece la pena escuchar más de una vez.
Rating: 6/10 Best songs: Blue flowers
What an interesting surprise. Never heard this before, but actually enjoyed listening to it end to end, which definitely isn't true of many albums I've been presented with fresh on this adventure!
Nolan, you haven't been to the octagonecologyst in a while bud, you should really make an appointment soon! Nolan: Yuh
Really hated that first song but the album can thru. Lots of good rap songs. Shout out the doctor
Its not my kind of music, or i don't listen to it much, but i can definitely see the atraction here.
expected to hate this based on what i've read and my overall ignorance in the hip hop genre - but so far i actually enjoy this a bit. probably helps that im not native english speaker and can ignore the bullshit lyrics and just focus on the flow and beats which are both really good. its still too long and the porn bits are just too much sometimes. My favorite track is Halfsharkalligatorhalfman - the idea of a 208 year old uncle as the final boss is hilarious. Also, there's another album about a horny gynecologist - Doc Gyneco made in France in the same year - who was first here? Don't really care but I think the French one is much better. 3/5
Pretty good, never heard it before
Excellent hip-hop and record scratching production in an Unkle/Mo-Wax style. The rapping is tongue-twistingly clever, but mind-twistingly bizarre about an alien gynecologist! Mad as a box of frogs.
Underground old headdddd
90’s hip-hop. A good flow on a lot of the albums…reminded me of Jurassic 5 at times. However, there is also something about albums like these in the 90’s that just feels…I dunno…inauthentic. Kind of like they are the flake plastic cheese version of a real album. I think it has to do with the gimmicky, porny type intro where they are trying to add performances that are not part of the music. It was kind of in vogue to have those kind of intros, or like the short little acts (less than 10-15 seconds long) that they had in between tracks. Definitely a 90’s kind of thing that makes the album feel commercialized and a bit dated.
It was fine, a little tedious to get through. Beats are decent but don’t have much variation as well. Some really funny moments which helped to keep it interesting tho. 5/10
Very interesting. I will probably not listen to this album because I don't really like these lyrics, but it sounds so special. Very dark and scarry.
Have to say I probably need to re-listen properly and give my full attention, struggling to remember much about it looking back. BUT from what I did hear I did like, some interesting beats and samples.
