Reviews (page 3 of 7)

I love me some weirdo rap. Surprised to hear something this out there and strange from 1996! The skits made me laugh out loud a few times. The beats are great. They have an old-school New York style. Most tracks also have a little something in them to tip the sound toward the sci-fi premise. The rapping is great too. He isn’t afraid to rap off beat or try unconventional flows. I love the off-kilter hook on “Earth People”: “Earth people, New York and California, Earth people, I was born on Jupiter.” It sounds odd at first but then gets stuck in your head. “Technical Difficulties” has a rambling, write-past-the-margins flow with a free associative lyrical style. He’s rapping too fast to pick up on every line but the verses are packed with surprising phrases and name drops. A lot of this album is absurd but his technical skills are top shelf.

I'm not too sure of the medical credentials of Dr. Octagon, but looking beyond the - at times bizarre - lyrics, there were some pretty funky beats and catchy hooks.

Bizarre sort of like DOOM but production quality was lower

God, i was legitimately not expecting Dr. Octagonecologyst to be this good. The beats were just so cool and flowed super well while also having a cool mysterious feel to them. Keith's flows were also really good and mixed in perfectly with the music. The samples were weird but they no doubt added to the charm of this album. Even if the vocals were a bit bland at first, i eventually got used to them as the album progressed. While not every song was great (Hello, Halfsharkalligatorhalfman) the majority of them absolutely were so that makes this album a really solid listen. Best Song: Earth People Worst Song: Halfsharkalligatorhalfman

Interesting tunes! Wanted to give 3, but I'm giving 4 for the surprise.

"oh shit, there's a horse in the hospital!" wins today's lyricism prize Straight in with a porn track on a Wednesday morning, great (Wednesday because I reunited with Lucas and missed 2 albums in a row oops). honestly, while it's not likely to make a repeat appearance in my spotify, I did enjoy the listen. Very solid sound, and interesting to say the least. Why and how did someone even think of this, but equally, why not? Kind of hypnotisingly weird

I Got to Tell You Earth People, this Wild and Crazy album may have some Technical Difficulties, but it’s Real Raw.

This had some real highs and lows. Kool Keith can flow with the best and the worst of them.

maybe this is juvenile but so am i

I’ve heard this album before but it was a while ago. This album is wild, it borders on outsider music at times. At times it sounds like dr. Octagon is stream of consciousness rapping. This was unlike anything else at the time, even for Kool Keith who is Dr. Octagon. It’s almost as if his alter ego takes over and he becomes Dr. Octagon. The lyrics are wildly inventive and, while seemingly random at times, create the lore of the Doctor. It’s one of the strangest concept albums I’ve come across. And the music on here is amazing. The album may never have been more than an underground hit if not for the production. The themes and lyrics are so bizarre that without stellar production this may have been lost to history save for a handful of hardcore fans. But all the ingredients together has made this album stand the test of time. I will say that it was on the long side, and some of the samples, while on theme, make it so I wouldn’t throw this on in public. Overall, a terrific album that still sounds fresh thanks to its unique style.

It was pretty good for the most part although some of the lyrics were very questionable and not my thing.

Like Slurm, it's surprisingly addictive.

This could have been a much better album without the constant references to rectums. As it is, it has some great beats and flow, if I wasn't an English language speaker, I feel my enjoyment would be increased, as the lyrics are just dumb.

ein Meisterwerk des experimentellen Hip-Hop

Noch nicht so gut wie Deltron und etwas gar unterleibsfixiert, aber für Blue Flowers gibts einen Extrastern

Love the Dr.

Kool Keith/Dr. Octagon/Dr. Doom, you a bad mofo! I remember when this came out, if you didnt know, it was like you really didn't get hip hop (high school kids are judgey!). He's like the Finnegan's Wake of hip hop. Either you love it or don't get it

Mighty gotten a five if not for the absolutely filthy lyrics that got old after awhile. Get off my lawn. Much prefer Jurassic 5 for this kind of sound with a much better message.

Another unheard of oddity. Fun album, slightly nerd-inspored hip hop

Pretty good album! Very nice bits, good flow, funny ant interesting lyrics, just a little bit of everything. I'm quite surprised that I have never heard of this album or artist. I'm going to come back to this album in the future, similarly to Deltron3030, which I thought of while listening to this record. Very interesting position on the list.

This is some solid hip-hop. Love the production, and general horror/creepy vibe. Favourite tracks: 3000, Real Raw, Blue Flowers, Bear Witness, Halfsharkalligatorhalfman.

Mid-90s hip-hop was so much cooler and weirder than I every knew at the time. This album is another one that shows the pervasive influence of comics on hip-hop in this period. The music is tremendous throughout, and is where this album really shines. Dr. Octagon's rhyme style is good and fits the music really well. It's often slow and smooth, but he heats it up occasionally on this album to great effect 4/5

Okay. Conceptually this was incredible. Not exactly my style, but this whole album was on the attack and I gotta say, for a Black dude to be putting this out in all its glorious nerdiness in 1996/7, that’s pretty amazing. Some real hooks, mixed in with the weird sampling from straight up pornography.

"Dr. Octagon, a homicidal, extraterrestrial, time-traveling gynecologist and surgeon." Basically it's a more juvenile Rocky Horror done in rap. There's a lot of talent on display here and I admire using such a wacky concept for an album. However some of the lyrics are pure cringe, even by 90's standards, which keeps it from 5 stars.

A somewhat landmark album for independent hip hop. Kool Keith is a peculiar wordsmith and he may just create a couple of subgenres with this album. As interesting is how this album has aged and/or what would be acceptable as a modern release. As an album, half of the tracks are absolutely great, another third are good, and only a few misses. The production is, however, stellar and borderline timeless across the entire album.

Kinda classic, but lacking that extra 5%

This is a wild ride in rap with rather many references to rectums. I've never heard an album quite like it.

Had never even heard of this but if I’d discovered it in the late 90s or early 00s I would definitely have bought it. Great hip hop album that clearly influenced a lot that came after it. Glad to have found it.

Was gonna say high 3, but fuck it, it's a 4. Just for the skits alone, which are that perfect blend of disturbing, nonsensical, hilarious. That kind of dark absurdist humor I LOVE. And 500x more horny and juvenile than your typical 90's hip hop. Which is saying something! I love a good concept that takes itself exactly as unseriously as the subject demands. We've had some good examples of this in 1001 so far, but this one just really goes to the depths of absurdism. I literally think they must have gone to the public library and feverishly written down words in popular science mags, in some kind of fever dream. It's just so silly and pornographic and just funny and irreverent. You see this theme throughout hip-hop, the surreal, juvenile absurdism, but they just go there that much harder and that much farther. It never lets up! Some of these skits had me genuinely laughing out loud! A low but nonetheless deserved 4/5. It's just on that edge where I love it.

Really cool sound and album, will be checking out more of Dr. Octagon. One song seemed to drag on for quite a while with the same words repeated over and over and over; aside from that, really dug this!

This is great. The whole gynecologist gimmick is definitely cringe, but it’s only a small part of it. Beats and rhymes are fantastic!

Surprise! Great beats, loved it. Added 3-4 songs. 4/5

Verrassend! Beetje avalanches ergens en dj shadow

An underground hip hop gem with great atmospheric production and technically impressive, mind-boggling rhymes.

Great rap album, well themed too

Dr. Octagonecologyst" by Dr. Octagon, the brainchild of Kool Keith, stands as a groundbreaking rap album renowned for its unprecedented oddity and conceptual brilliance. Released in 1996, the album is a collaborative effort with Dan the Automator and DJ QBert, fusing sci-fi and horror elements into a perceptive narrative. Here's an in-depth look at the key aspects: Conceptual Brilliance: The album is hailed as a masterpiece, with a unique and captivating concept. It follows the tale of a perverted alien sent to Earth through a fax machine, showcasing Kool Keith's imaginative prowess[3]. Unconventional Lyrics: The lyrics delve into unexplored territories, reflecting a psychotic yet intriguing narrative. The oddity in the lyrical content contributes to the album's distinctive character[6]. Musical Innovation: The sonic landscape of "Dr. Octagonecologyst" is characterized by an experimental mix of electro elements. The production, helmed by Dan the Automator, showcases a creative use of sounds, with tracks that defy conventional rap norms[1]. Critical Acclaim: The album has received widespread acclaim, with reviewers praising its audacious approach to rap music. Its influence can be seen in subsequent hip-hop artists like Odd Future and Death Grips[5]. Enduring Legacy: Over the years, "Dr. Octagonecologyst" has maintained its relevance, standing as one of Kool Keith's most significant contributions to the hip-hop genre. Its impact extends beyond its release, leaving an indelible mark on the rap landscape.

Dan the Automator and is a genius and DJ Qbert is one of the best DJs. This record is evidence of that. Kool Keith is also incredibly talented. That said, the sexually explicit lyrics made me a little uncomfortable. I would love an instrumental version.

I love weird 90s rap

More and more, this project is teaching me that I have missed so much good hip hop for no reason. I loved this album.

#16. I liked this one quite a bit. Even though rap music is more popular now than its ever been, and is possibly the most popular form of pop music these days, this is just one more piece of evidence that 90s rap was the peak of rap music. This dude's joke/comedy side project rap album is better than 93.141592% of modern rap music. 4/5: fantastic

"Fuck it, he's dead..Oh Shit! There's a horse in the hospital!" Certified classic. This is like the soundtrack to late 90s/early 00s Adult Swim. Basically a completely bonkers concept album with some real bangers. The skits are silly and juvenile and honestly don't do much to add to the album other than perpetuate the medical theme.

Pretty out there, but not terrible

I liked it. I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it but I liked it when it was on

The music is spooky, eerie and atmospheric. The samples are often from science fiction, horror, or porn. This is one of the most scatological, anal-obsessed album I've heard to date. Poo poo, rectum, and the like are oft-used terms. This is strange. I like it?? The music I very much like. The lyrics, man I don't know. It's like a filthy, sexist, (homophobic?) B-movie. Which is sometimes good? I don't know, this is an interesting album unlike anything else I've ever heard.

I've been listening to Earth People and halfshark for years. I love the weirdness of this album but have found it inconsistent and a little too long. I was really surprised to see this here but immediately got excited to read the reviews. Besides discovering new music, my favorite part about this project is reading 1 star reviews.

feelin' it

Alternative hip hop. Un poco oscuro. Está bien

prototype MF DOOM and just not as good still great but a few songs are lacking and had stuff like sex and i mean i dont want sex in my music. I feel like some of these verses would be good features on more modern hip-hop albums

Wax in your inner ear, doodoo in your outer ear Two cows a zebra will jump through your atmosphere Four stars

Silly, catchy tunes, with a wild through-line story. Definitely worth a listen.

This album is really fun & wild, I really liked it.

Kool Keith is pretty good at his thing.

Lyrics sehr stark und Beats auch. Skits teilw sehr weird aber ansonsten hats mir gefallen. Decent 8/10

The star of the show here is for sure Dan The Automator and his fantastic beats, taking influence from trip hop to create tracks that have this fascinatingly hypnotic and threatening aura whilst still managing to keep the tunes funky enough so your head never stops bopping. He really is reason enough to check out this record, which is certainly no small feat when the person rapping over these immaculate beats is underground hip hop legend Kool Keith (performing as the eponymous Dr. Octagon). This is probably his most famous record under his most famous pseudonym, and for good reason. Dr Octo is a bizarre figure and his presence creates a bizarre record, a radio-unfriendly mixture of science-fiction and horrorcore with some truly disgusting and evocative imagery combined with some of the funniest moments I've heard on a Hip Hip album (Oh Shit There's a Horse in the Hospital!). That tone is kinda par for the course when you rap about an incompetent intergalactic gynecologist with a habit for either fucking or accidentally killing his patients. Or both! And not always in the order you might think! Some might find this record juvenile but other than the sex skits (which to be fair, are a step above the average Hip Hop sex skit purely by virtue of how bizarre they are) I found that they created a tone that you can't get from many other albums and reminded me a lot of The Slim Shady LP in all the right ways. Who says great art can't be irreverent or silly when it wants to? It does have some of the common Hip Hop failings (the aforementioned sex skits combined with a bloated runtime can test the listeners patience at times) but as far as 90's rap goes I'd put this in upper echelons. An underground classic for a reason. Highlights: Earth People, No Awareness, Real Raw, Blue Roses, Halfsharkalligatorhalfman

Pretty decent underground

Listening to this, I wonder if this album was the inspiration for not one, bur two of the characters on 30 Rock: Tracy Jordan and Dr Spaceman. Good show. Good album. I’ve been a big fan of MF Doom for a long time, this album seems comparable.

Dr Octopussy.

moar octagon, less cologyst please

Great beats, great scratching. Zany in a way that I don't think anyone else but Kool Keith could do. Sexual to a, frankly, mildly worrying degree. Favorite tracks: "Blue Flowers", "Halfsharkhalfalligatorhalfman", "Real Raw"

What is this? What is he even rapping about? What's with those weird and creepy interval tracks throughout the album? I'm not really sure but it's kind of hilarious, and the Wikipedia biography for Dr. Octagon raised more questions than it answered. It's so ridiculously bizarre, but I have to say I kind of enjoy it for just how bizarre it is. The flow is amazing and the sheer insanity and non sequitur of the lyrics is a skill in itself. The backing beats are usually pretty good, and there's some amazing turntablism in this that gives me an Avalanches vibe. However I think it overstayed its welcome a little bit, in my opinion. There's only so much total chaos that I can tolerate, and the 66 minute run time felt tedious after a while. Thanks Kool Keith, for what ever the hell this is. I might subject myself to the psychological torture of this album again sometime. Favourite: Blue Flower

Very clever, great flow, funny, good beats. 4 stars.

Rhymes are nice

There is something so unabashedly weird about this record that I can't help but love; it's like a character from a 50's sci-fi b-movie jumped off the screen and started rapping (but a lot more filthy). Some of the humor kinda falls flat for me, but otherwise this was a good time.

Great raps and production. Maybe a bit too many skits and weird dated humor. Good though.

Hell yeah. Minus 1 star for some of the creepy women talk. Otherwise genius.

Super fun hip-hop album that feels like a precursor to MF Doom with the conceptual aspect. You probably couldn't get away with a lot of these lyrics nowadays. Or is hip-hop immune from woke mobs? Either way, thoroughly enjoyable listen and I will likely go back to it

Solid early horrorcore rap vIbes, sounds like one of the two strains of rap that would go on to inform artists like G-Mo Skee (the other being the Psychopathic Records crew helped by ICP,) and inherently listenable with numerous flows and a dumb, dark sense of humour. A few tracks drug it down from a 5 to a 4 star album, cuz it got a little long and they were the subpar cuts, bit pretty near a perfect rating. Like a 4.25 or so.

Superb Mo Wax era hip-hop

i liked this a lot more than i thought i would 4 stars!

so this album has shown me that i don't necessarily hate all skits. i hate skits that are about the size of the rappers schlong, how good they are at making love to a beautiful woman, hating on someone else or generally any other aggressive caterwauling. the skits in this are absurd and borderline surreal which is like a magnet to my vic and bob addled brain. overall its good hip hop and his lilt is really listenable.

Dr. Octagon, get out of my vagina, you beast! You horrible little perv, I told you not to touch me there. You sex pest. I'm nine years old. It's all coming flooding back to me now. The horror.

Strong

Really interesting narrative driven hip hop album

Interesting. Some plunderphonics, trippy slow backtracks. Rap is some random words, some silliness (doodoo), sexual stuff.

Skills. Too long though

Mad rhymes, crazy beats, awesome scratching, Kool Keith makes records like nobody else sustaining this mad character for an entire album. The lyrics are funny and caustic and stunningly inventive - Keith can likely rap about any dang thing. Unusually for a rap record, the skits are actually funny (and fit the album concept). The is a fun, mad journey.

If you want an insane, expansive, accessible introduction to a certain kind of underground, look no further. While it's gonzo and not always in good ways, Octagonecologyst has aged surprisingly well. The strings sustain the production, a fact I failed to notice during my first listen. The plot, such as it is, is choppy, but Mr. Octagon is nothing if not consistent with his themes. Hard light.

Production was interesting, perhaps the vocals would have caught me 25 years ago, but it did nothing today. Randomness.

It was pretty good, scratches were cool.

really, really cool Blue flowers may have just become one of my favourite hip hop tracks this album has further reinforced that old school hip hop is best hip hop B] Unexpectedly good, I went into this knowing nothing about the album or the artist. Perhaps in some way that made the listening experience better. Will definitely be revisiting this, it had humour, witty/dark/clever lyrics, good rapping and awesome album art.

Excellent Kool Keith album. Great, spooky beats.

"Dr. Octagonecologyst" is the debut studio album by rapper and Ultramagnetic MCs' Kool Keith, actually Keith Matthew Thornton and alias Dr. Octagon. Other key members were producer Dan "The Automator" Nakamura and turntablist DJ Qbert (additionally produced by KutMasta Kurt). I will say the production and scratching are absolutely fantastic. This had to be one of the weirdest albums I've listened to and, of course, I liked it quite a bit. The album introduces the character Dr. Octagon who is a homicidal, extraterrestrial, time-traveling gynecologist and surgeon. Yeah. The songs pretty much piece together his story with weird and eerie music, lyrics, noises and sampling. The lyrics are very unique being absurd, funny, non-related to each other, something rapped and other sometimes spoken. The music is considered as fusing pyschedelic, trip-hop and electronic. I actually think it's some of the best combination of rap and electronic music I've heard. The album begins with "Intro" with its creepy music and has the doctor talking with a nurse he entually has sex with. Spoken word and we're off to a good start which then transitions into the second single "3000." More of a straight-forward hip-hop rap song and, yeah, we're in the year "3000." Remember the time travel. The fourth overall song and first single is "Earth People" with its heavy organ intronand transitions into a funky beat. One of the best combos of rap and electronic music as the later half of the song sounds like Kraftwerk. Tremendous scratching. And yes, he's from Jupiter Earth People. Songs continue to fill in his story and we get to "Wild and Crazy," maybe my favorite song on the album. Just a great groove. Deeper beats and bass. Great scratching and eerie production. The album ends with "1977" and we're back in the Disco era with more straight-forward rappin', a pyschedelic feel and mentions Grandmaster Flash. This album was quite the ride. I don't know about the overall story but the music and production were great. Recommended for anyone willing to sit enjoy the beats and music and maybe laugh a bit.

I'm not into hip-hop, but this one sounds creative and even cute

Pee pee and doo doo are funny, beats are great, flow is smooth. Don't... *love* the porn samplings but I get it. Happy to have discovered it!

Another unknown to me. Another diamond discovery. I defo wanna revisit this one. Top Hip Hopping!

Heard "Blue Flowers" on a CMJ CD sampler and was captivated at 15. Bought the album on CD and it was a cult hit amongst me and my friends in high school. I put these songs on more than a few mix tapes. It was a perfect blend of elements for me at that time in my life. The absurd and often immature sense of humor had a lot to do with it, but really, the main things that appealed to me were Kool Keith's sheer willingness to embrace his eccentricity, and Dan The Automator's gorgeous genre bending beats. Both of them dared to defy the mainstream sound of the time, both sonically and lyrically. Their bravery in willing to be themselves paid off, and inspired more to follow, not the least of which was MF Doom.

Such a great album. I’ve been an Octo fan for many years. Pro tip: read the lyrics while listening.

Old hip-hop was lit

Raunchy but Dan the Automator makes for a unique and futuristic sound that gives "Blue Flowers" and "Earth People" classic status. Also what a crazy and creative idea for a concept album. A departure from Ultramagnetic MC's but you could draw some lines for Kool Keith between those albums and this one.

Holy Schneikies, this is a FANTASTIC album. I was drawn in and mesmerized the whole way through. Again, love this whole 1001 Albums thing -- must remember to hug my dear friend who introduced it to me (good excuse to finally see him after far too long!) -- because here it goes again, sharing with me an artist and an album I otherwise would almost certainly never had heard. I'm coming back to this album. I lost myself so much in the music I didn't always pay attention to the lyrics, and I'd like to focus on those.

Juvenile lyrics and concept stays a little too long, but otherwise subject matter is a fun and unique divergence from typical gangsta or political topics. Tracks are solid and skits are a lot of fun. Great to have another underground artist doing something new and interesting, and apparently he was influential to the likes of Dr Doom.

Another hip hop gem. Fun, bizarre, ingenious and unique. Is it hip hop? Is it trip hop? Whatever it is, it is eminently listenable. 4 🌟

This album is such a wild ride, as most Kool Keith albums are. The lyrics are absurdist and sometimes just straight-up silly, but the production is killer. 4/5 stars

Before listening to this album I hadn't heard of Dr. Octagon before, but this has made me interested in listening to more of Kool Keith's personas. I enjoyed the overall theme of the album, although I can't pick a stand-out song.

Wonderfully mental with brilliant production and great rapping and bonkers lyrics

Porny, medically obsessed, phat beats, pretty wild stuff. Really enjoyed it.

Had never heard of him, glad I have now.

Absolutely, amazingly bat-shit crazy. Loved it.

Well I have to add myself to the list of white people pissing Kool Keith off by loving this album... I knew the big cuts from this album, but essentially you're getting DOOM before DOOM, which I'm happy with. Earth People, Bear Witness, Blue Flowers are all great. The crazy lyricism is what I miss most from hip hop today...

It was ok. I didn’t listen to it as carefully as it probably deserved.

I love a good dirty story now and again. Would not listen to in the car with kids, but was right for the time

Seeing this pop up gave me moosebumps. A little overlong, I tend to skip a couple of the repetitive songs. But a true classic nonetheless.

lyrics are kinda wack but the beat's tight

4.5/5 Really liked the ‘old school’ rap Just misses a little to make me listen to it again and have favorite songs

Not necessarily my favorite thing but I really respect it and am glad it exists

Kool Keith!

Found it funny

Well, it has its moments, this is one doctor that I am definitely giving an apple a day to. ★★★

this shit is wack, no other way to describe it

Not nearly as shocking as a lot of reviews made out, but well made, deceptively clever, transgressive fun. Influential too, I hear Odd Future and Lil Yachty.

++: 3000, Earth People, No Awareness, General Hospital, Blue Flowers, A Visit to the Gynecologyst, Bear Witness, I'm Destructive, Blue Flowers Revisited, Waiting List +: Intro, Real Raw, Dr. Octagon, Girl Let Me Touch You, Elective Surgery +-: I Got to Tell You, Technical Difficulties (Remix), Wild and Crazy, halfsharkalligatorhalfman, 1977 6,9/10

Tough finding a full version to listen to, I'm enjoying what I have been able to hear so far. I sought out additional songs and they were sadly not as good as the 2 songs from this album available on YouTube. Odd and interesting, but not great.

Asinine lyrics that are being carried like the burden of Atlas via Octagon's flow and well-produced beats. 7/10.

This was interesting.. when it started off I was not looking forward to an album about immature jokes that was so ubiquitous of 90’s rap (for some reason)… disregarding the lyrics, the music was pretty good. I enjoyed the beats and the scratching, something sorely missed from hip hop. "Earth People, New York to California, Earth People, I was born on Jupiter" Was unforgivable though…

Unique and the history behind the artist is very interesting

Completely new to me. I like a bit of underground hip hop so it was interesting to go back to a source.

The beats were pretty solid and the rhymes were clever but bonkers

Gillade det här! Slappt och kul. Stark 3a.

Duger väl.

There were some songs that I quite liked, and the overall sound was good but there was a lot that a bit uncomfortable to listen to. It also went on.

I've listened to some Kool Keith/Dr. O in my time, but I dunno whether I sat down to listen to a whole album. More likely it came on shuffle when listening to some other, better alt-rap (DOOM). It's fine. He's got good flow, the production is solid, and there's some clever rhymes. I dig weird rap, but I'm not hyped about horrorcore. The skits are AWFUL. So, I dunno, meh.

I seriously don't know how to rate this. It's fairly incredible, sounds amazing and is seriously weird. It also opens with a short except from a porno and has some loose plot about an alien gynaecologist, and raises some pretty significant consent red flags with some of the lyrics. I guess I'll give it a three? I have no idea though

Really stupid album really, but I did enjoy how daft it was

While there's definitely a lot of interesting stuff to dive into on this album, I will admit that it does feel a lot more influential than it is actually enjoyable to listen to. Not at all to say that it's bad, but just not really holding up as well as it could by today's standards. The heavy turntablism influence as well as the abstract production make this albun very unique, especially for its time. There really wasn't a whole lot else like it around at the time, so this was definitely a breath of fresh air. But as more and more music came out taking very clear influence from this, the album itself just got a bit left behind. It's still fun to give it a listen, and definitely a big part of hip hop history, but bigger and better things have been achieved in the subgenres now. Each aspect of this album is still great, the rapping, production, etc, but as abstract hip hop expanded so much in the following years, this one just feels like a much more watered down version of some of the best albums we have seen in abstract hip hop since.

jui pas la cible

Once you get over the freaky then it was like aight but the flow was weird the album was j weird

It's fine if overly crass.

This album so hit or miss lmao like one moment they are the goat of hip hop (hyperbole they arent Nas level good) and then the next they are dropping Soundcloud rap.

This is such a strange album, as it has some actually great moments inside of it that seem to get washed away by just strange to plain horrible songs that ruin the whole flow. Also, those songs about gynecologist's; what the actual fuck? Like, what was he thinking writing those lyrics. Strange and weird. Apart from that and what ever the fuck Earth People was, it was a decent album.

beats are good, scratching is very impressive, lyric composition and delivery are great, but the content is rather variable.

Andre 3000's flows over a primitive MF Doom beat. Kinda tuff. Blue flowers is buns and these interludes are vile

Really cool sound, but a little too much NSFW to play on the aux

My score sits in the middle. Because this album likewise balances the groovy and stylish with juvenile and porno-esque. The doctor octagonecologyst character is equal parts hilariously absurd and disturbing.

Somewhat interesting- Eurotrash meets DJ Shadow and Jurassic 5 in a doctors surgery waiting room. 3 stars

Fantastic beats and flow, the lyrics though are mostly poor to outright disgusting and the porn intermissions are of course awfully cringe. A mid score it is.

Really strange album. Why is this man so obsessed with the gynecologist?

First things first, this album is not meant to be taken seriously. For the love of God, it’s called “Dr. Octagonecologyst”, you should know exactly what you’re getting into with a name like that. It instantly plants itself into an oddly specific niche of music listeners who enjoy geek culture, low hanging fruit, and Hip Hop. Unfortunately, this naturally makes it immensely inaccessible to most of the people who would end up listening to it. The second thing I very quickly picked up about “Dr. Octagon”, AKA Kool Keith, is that he sounds a L O T like Deltron Zero. The third thing I noticed, is that the skits on this album are fucking hilarious. It’s not often I enjoy the skits on these rap albums, but conceptually they work just fine here, and actually end up enhancing the album as a whole. The skits on this album follow the exploits of the titular Dr. Octagon. They are as absurd as they are funny, and they are also undeniably 90’s coded, which makes them extra special to me. This album isn’t perfect. It’s way too long for what it is. Keith is a pretty good rapper with a great flow, but he doesn’t always hook me on all these songs. Plus, none of them were good enough to save. I still really liked listening to this album, especially my favorite song on the album, “Bear Witness”, and I would even return to it if I heard it naturally, but it wouldn’t be something I would feel the need to go back to specifically. I’m a sucker for record scratches, and “Bear Witness” had it in bunches. It also did an interesting job of blending Electronica with Hip Hop, as did a lot of the album in general. The best parts really are the skits though. If I was going to save a song just to enjoy laughing at occasionally, it would have to be “General Hospital”. Just the ending alone had me wheezing. The line “Fuck it he’s dead. Oh shit, there’s a horse in the hospital” is going to be stuck in my head for at least a week. For better or for worse, but mostly for better, the skits give this album so much life that, unlike a lot of the Hip Hop albums that I even notably enjoyed, I’m likely to remember this album for a good bit longer than I would without them. This one gets a high 3 nearing a 4 from me. Going to give it a 3.9/5. It made me laugh a few times, it’s got a fun concept, and the rapping is good, but the rapping isn’t tremendously memorable, and the premise starts to run thin over an hour into the album’s 1 hour and 5 minute playtime. Still though, I really liked this one, but I completely understand why it’s rated as low as it is.

It's the classic tale of interplanetary gynaecologist who fucks his patients. Well, I suppose they must all get a bit turned on when they go for their nether exams mustn't they? The sheer length of the album and lack of killer tracks work against it. It rarely gets above a crawl which, in scene setting a sci-fi sex-pest's adventures, works as a menacing backdrop. But it oftens lacks a bit of punch, especially over the second half. First half and selected highlights though is uniquely bonkers, sounding completely out of its time. Much like Alex Harvey I have full admiration for such an album going against the prevailing tide, so a mid-rating seems very unsatisfactory - but as an album that's what it is.

Dan the Automator’s beats are an easy 4 stars. The 2am cable tv energy is not my thing: 2 stars. Guess it’s only fair to meet in the middle.

Typisches 90er-HipHop-Album, auf dem die meiste Zeit gar nichts passiert. Einen Pluspunkt gibt es für die Atmosphäre.

Zu lang, aber gefällt mir.

So he's a doctor that did a whole album about being a doctor. Coolio. This felt very middle of the road. Definitely a couple tracks that had me bobbing my head more than others

This album has so much potential but is held back by obnoxious skits, secually immature lyrics, and some very skippable tracks (looking at you Bear Witness). The album art is sick and when Kool Keith is just rapping normally it's great. The lyrics are creative and some of the beats are otherworldly. It just feels like in trying to stretch the boundaries, it does so in the wrong directions sometimes.

Never heard this before. It's not bad, but nothing I'm likely to revisit.

This rules in the same way that 70s grindhouse flicks rule

Not what I expected. Pretty solid old-school rap album. Nothing was familiar other than the style, but it was pretty good.

This album, while very explicit, was pretty good. The overall, beats were solid and had a good groove. My expectations were low, it did over deliver.

Not from the 60s, isn't jazz, isn't some experimental album that you have to listen to 7 times to get. However its some form of hip hop where nothing rhymes. Song - Earth People The chorus is jarring. "earth people, New York and California" "earth people, I was born on Juipiter" The whole album seems to be "what if I was an alien making music, with the same synth on repeat over and over, made no sense, had random samples, and made hip hop music, but also didn't know how to rhyme, and just threw in random space and science terms" 2/5 its listenable, enjoyable at times, but some of these songs are just rough to listen to

Lyricism was suspect and didn’t like the skits, but the beats and rap flow were sick

I thought the sci-fi concept was cool here. I tend to like records like this. I remember Ryan Adams did a record about a space war or something and I dug that too haha. A friend told me if I like this I should dig in to MF Doom and some Edan and some other stuff.

judging by the name and album art im guessing this is some bullshit. well... didn't expect it to be old school hiphop which isnt really my thing but it doesnt sound bad... not gonna actually listen tho just skipped through

This is the kind of Hip-Hop I actually like! It's fun, creative, self-aware and doesn't take itself too seriously. The Dr. Octagon character is ridiculous and out-there. Yes, it does get a bit crude sometimes, but that's to be expected with Hip-Hop in general, and with this album in particular, as it is about an intergalactic gynecologist. More of this weird sci-fi Hip-Hop and less of the usual, please. Key track: 3000 Earth People Blue Flower

Should be a 4 but it’s about 20 minutes too long and the gyno jokes have aged like milk.

That was a trip

I kissed this when it came out. I really liked this much more than I do 90% of hipster rap. Dan the Automator does great work on this album. The album is too long but so were more hip.hop releases in this era.

This was never living up to the cover but what a unique combination. Not sure if it all worked for me but appreciated the big swing taken.

Inconsistent and juvenile but quite a fee tracks with great flow

Mad, rude, weird, epic and absolutely full of nonsense. From a pure beats and flow aspect this is good. The concept is bat shit crazy and if thats your sort of thing then go for it.

Definitely creative, definitely funky, definitely weird. While it wouldn't be a rap record without juvenile and offensive lyrics, everything from the subject matter to the rhymes to the mellow off-kilter delivery reassures you that in no way does it take any of itself seriously.

I think if I’d heard it back in 1996, there’s a strong chance I would have loved it, but in 2026 I thought it was decent if overlong.

Great to revisit this, but listening to Automator always makes me want to listen to Shadow. top track: Bear Witness

Jeg synes det er fed! Vildt gode beats, dybt underlige vers, idiosynkratisk. Stor 3'er.

I watched Louis Theroux's "Inside the Manosphere" last night. It's difficult to not draw a line between a lot of these 1990s rap albums featuring significantly misogynistic lyrics and these manosphere influencers who are little more than pimps and grifters. Similar thoughts extend to early Eminem and Biggy. On a positive side I really enjoyed the flow of the rapping, the sampling and the beats of this album.

Classic of the genre yet again, the ripple effects of Kool Kieth can be seen in a lot of great rappers (MF Doom, Mad Libs, etc.). While certainly not my favourite album, it's an interesting and fun one to listen to again. Maybe I'll listen to it again, but not for a little while. Highlights are Real Raw, Blue Flowers, and Dr. Octagon.

I like certain tracks which are trip hop vibes but the whole album is mid.

Álbum de hip-hop um pouco datado nas letras, porém muito rico musicalmente. Tangzu Wan'er 2 Bass Editon.

+ Great beats, nice production, keeps the sound consistent for its long runtime - The long runtime, general theme of the album and ... questionable lyrics. Nothing wrong with being a bit edgy on your nicely produced hiphop record, but for such a long album AND including some pretty bad interludes, yeah that deducts some points.

a ton of fun

more crude, less talented version of mf doom. 3.5

I liked this more than I thought it would. I love the samples and the music. Other than the song about the gynecology visit was just kind of silly and juvenile, the rest of the album was a vibe.

Very cool beats and all, but the lyrics are often beyond cringe...

Based on the album artwork I expected this to be a metal album. Overall I liked this quite a bit. There are some odd sample choices going on and the subject matter is a little something, that are going to keep this at 3 stars for me.

This was pretty good for me, I like the Dan the Automator production intt general and, in general, like the Kool Keith presence on top. Maybe I just had a soft-spot for off-beat, made up personas. I could have done with less of the interspersed porno audio -- but in general pretty ok

Fine if pretty bland 90s hip hop. Don't really have a lot to say about it other than that it didn't really strike me as memorable in any sense. It's cool in concept but I'm just not fond.

Although the premise is a bit out there, the tunes aren’t bad. Interesting to read the lyrics which are quite a bit more science-y than most hip hop, and it’s delivered quite competently. It’s not something I’d be in a rush to listen to again, but probably good if you like that sort of thing

Wasn't as bad as I thought. I liked the beats

Musically, this is a surprisingly strong and inventive hip-hop record. Dan the Automator’s production is textured and atmospheric, blending dusty samples, jazz-leaning grooves, and off-kilter rhythms into a sound that still feels distinctive decades later. DJ Qbert’s turntable work adds another layer of creativity, and the beats often carry a depth that rewards close listening. The challenge is the concept itself. Kool Keith’s Dr. Octagon persona—a bizarre, extraterrestrial gynecologist—leans heavily into surreal, grotesque imagery and dark humor. It’s certainly memorable, but the subject matter can also be distracting and occasionally off-putting, pulling attention away from the genuinely interesting music underneath. There’s a lot here to admire from a production and creativity standpoint. At the same time, the album’s strange concept makes it harder to fully settle into. It’s the kind of record you respect more than you necessarily return to. Creative, weird, and undeniably unique—but ultimately more intriguing than essential. A three.

The skits in this album, just like most from this era of hip-hop, are painfully dated at this point (pretending to be a female doctor and basically raping your female patients... WTF). But if one is able to put aside the massive 'ick' factor, it's quite a slick record in terms of Kool Keith's rapping. Very surreal/avant-garde lyrical style, especially for the time period, and great production overall.

Sounded good, but the lyrics made me extremely uncomfortable.

Cool, laid back, funny, very horned up. What's not to like? A very easy record to enjoy. A welcome addition to my, admittedly very small, stable of hip hop knowledge. Listening to music from unfamiliar genre's is like going on a city break and trying to figure out the public transport system, it's more fun that getting the train at home but you won't be doing it every day. There's plenty of nuance I won't understand about why this album is special because I don't know what's easy and what's hard when it comes to making music like this, but it isn't hard to appreciate the sense of humour and lyrical flow of `Dr. Octagon`. From the porn movie dialogue samples (`Intro` / `Visit To The Gynecologist`) to the tracks that read like one long role play chat-up line (said with absolutely nothing but respect - `Girl Let Me Touch You`) I was immediately considering what kind of mix I could drop using something from this record as I was listening to it. I'd never heard of Dr. Octagon before and I don't know how well known they are these days, the Spotify monthly listener sits at a respectable 91k listeners which is really not bad for an underground act that released their first record in 1996. All it'd take is one viral tiktok trend using a sample of theirs and they'd be off to the races again. But I digress, `Dr Octagonecologyst`, there's no dance-floor heaters, heartbreakers or all round crowd pleasers, but it's funny, clever, chilled and and a little sinister. `Bear Witness` is a standout banger which brings to mind `The Avalanches` best work. I'll be putting on again for sure.

Cool production and flow. Really like this.

Kinda creepy why is he so obsessed with this gynecology but its good

The skits get a 1 star because they are gross and cringeworthy. That and the juvenile lyrics about poop rockets and gynecology keep this from being higher rated, because the music/rapping were otherwise excellent.

What a silly sausage. I think I might just sneak this into the threes, on the basis that it's quite good fun, but it's also outrageously puerile and at times outright horrible. A mixed bag.

I would never seek this out but it was a fun listen

The edgelord tendencies haven't aged particularly well, but Keith's flow is exceptional, the scratching is sublime, and the production is a treat across the board. Always good to be reminded what hip hop can do when not tied to trap beats. And while the stream-of-consciousness lyrics combined with the pulp/sci-fi/kitsch backstory would go on to influence some of my favorite rappers of all time, I just wish Keith's consciousness wasn't so juvenile and, well, gross (tongue in cheek though it may be). A keystone of underground rap and a refreshing counterpoint to the gangster rap that was dominating the scene at the time, but others would take this concept to more satisfying places.

Not bad, some good moments here and there. I do appreciate the creativity and abstraction of these raps but in the end nothing really stuck with me. Likely will take many listens to have any of these stories be interesting to me but I dig all the rap styles on here. At least there’s some interesting sounds in the backing tracks although a lot of the beats can be quite bland. The biggest stand out has got to be the amazing scratching of Q-bert! This was a decent listen and makes me wonder how it all fits in Kool Keith’s career but I would say that this is not essential for me but I can see why it may be for some.

Blind album and artist. I love the instrumentation style and beats, but i did not like the lyrics or vocals as much as some other artists and albums.

Hooray for a hip hop album! This list needs more hip hop.

Interestingly a rap album without an excessive amount of profanity, with the complete degradation of women, and without 100 uses of the dreaded asterisk word!! Is it raunchy? At times yes, but for rap not excessively so, and the lyrical flow is smooth and fast and the backing beats awesome. Harkens back to old school east coast rap. Solid.

I have never heard this guy before. It was pretty good.

5/16, 31%

What the hell was this? I was expecting to really hate this album, I mean, it’s a rap album about a gynaecologist from Jupiter, and I’m not much of a rap guy, but for some reason, I kind of enjoyed it. The lyrical subject was quite bizarre, but I'm usually more of a music guy, and this album had many solid beats.

super sexist at times, but super interesting sounds behind the rapping itself. I appreciate the way it committed to the bit like nobody’s buiz.

I really enjoyed this. I like that its both funky and has many great trip hop moments, especially Blue Flowers. I thought the scientific wordplay was really clever. My only complaint is a second half that dragged a little bit. Shave off a couple of songs and this would get a higher rating from me.

i am not the audience for what keith is doing here. however, automator fucking freaked it.

So very of its time, for good and ill. A little long, a little repetitive Song(s) added to my 1001 Bangers playlist: Earth People, Dr Octagon, Halfsharkalligatorhalfman

Um álbum que faz zero sentido sem contextualização. A produção é muito evocativa e bem executada, mas não estou totalmente convencido do flow do doutor.

Good not great, but enjoyable as a snapshot of the time.

Sixty-five minutes was a bit much but I found it to be a decent album.

A pleasant surprise

A little one note but I vibed

#247/1001. Mo' wax! I had an era when it was my go to label, ah the memories...some first dj gigs / spinning vinyl on bars on Friday nights, music changing from style to another style during a pint - to be honst still more or less my style to entertain, hats off to DJ Bunuel. I recognized the trip-hoppy mood and the murky samples, I can place them exactly to summers -97 and -98, spotted some of the songs as well. Initially I remembered it to be more turntablist, so perhaps I mix it with Qbert and others from that era (Qbert featured here, so not totally a wrong memory). Didn't really remember the tongue in cheek humour of the lyrics and the whole character though. But when and where and for whom would I play this Blue Flowers or the whole album nowadays? With these kitchy exploitation samples? A nostalgia trip worth a 3.

I like the commitment to the character, but track after track the shock value starts to wear thin.

KK is a beast. This is not his best imho, but even so it’s better than most. Curious to see what else has made the list

Silly 90s rap. It's pretty clever, but also raunchy.

90s rap, feel like if you are into that you’ll like it. If you’re not you won’t. I can appreciate it for what it is but it’s not an album I’ll be rushing back to.

*Underground hip-hop record, like the different sound to his cadence *The skits are silly and take away from how good the songs are

Ei huono, muttei mitenkään erinomainenkaan. 2,5/5.

I know the song Blue Flowers from a video game (Grindsession?) and have always liked it. There were lots of tracks on here where I really enjoyed the production. The skits I could have done without completely; the one in the doctor's office was pretty gross. Overall, there's a lot on this I would come back to though. 3.4/5

Listened to this for another list. I scored it pretty low for that one, mostly because of the terrible skit. The skit is still terrible, but I did sorta dig the goofy lines + the trip hop instrumentation. 2.5/5

This was weird. I came in fully expecting to hate it but I liked the album. Really great musical production and strong rapping. Lyrics are bizarre but I guess that’s part of the appeal. Can’t say anything about importance so let’s say solid three.

Nothing here that I couldn’t get from Madvillany. Good record but probably won’t come back to it.

Hip hop is not my thing but it was pleasant enough.

good, 3.5

I think I’m drawn to bizarre absurdist narratives (if that isn’t an oxymoron). I could see myself allowing more time for this and admiring the flow and the energy. It’s not quite engaging enough yet but it was a weirdly interesting experience.

I like absurdist, trip-hop, so I was drawn to this. It wasn't well done enough to keep me interested for an entire record, but I can see where Madvillainy came from, so that's cool. Or I guess Kool. DOOM's record is better, though.

My attention kept coming in and out listening to this. All in all, I liked it. (In the early days of this project, the interlude really surprised me in the rap genre. now I expect and enjoy a good interlude!)

First of all any as album with a track called "Halfsharkalligatorhalfman" automatically gets a pass for me. Honestly, when it leans on the alien sci-fi horror aspects, I really enjoyed the album. Some of it was sillier than shit, but it was too fun to deny, plus it gave me a midnight B-movie feel. When it runs down some of the more normal 90s hop hop. It was awaight. But the fun factor bumps this up a half star (7.4) ★★★½

The beats are too repetitive, but not bad. 3.5 stars

bizarramente inesperado. muitobao 3000 é facil a melhor track e totalmente diferente dos iguais. nao querendo desmerecer o resto da bolacha, afinal sao tracks bem fluidas. 8/10

Best concept album about a space gynecologist I’ve ever heard.

Fuck my pussy Doctor!

Favorite Track: Real Raw

Snowiest winter morning yet. What a fun project but my feelings are conflictingggg. Bro had a concept and most definitely executed it. This album feels super experimental (idk if that’s true for the time) yet familiar. THIS feels like the hop in trip hop, I was bumping. The other side of the coin is like … why is your concept being an implied expert on women’s vaginas (eyeroll) type of mf who wouldn’t know his way w a damn map. 4 for instrumentals and influence but 2 for execution so.. 3 stars it is Bear witness - insane instrumentals 3000 - favorite flow No awareness - groovy and reliable Real raw - last 2 mins go crazy

This album kept switching between genuinely funny and super uncomfortable.

Fun production, very 96 lyrics, silly sexist etc

Alright, I want to start this review by acknowledging something that I find very funny. So, Dr. Octagon here is actually one of many aliases for a guy that's most commonly known as Kool Keith. He's had a decently prolific career and is considered to be one of the more... surreal rappers out there. This is some solid context for this debut album of his, Dr. Octagonecologyst. However, it also allows me to acknowledge one of his other albums. That album is called First Come, First Served; released under the name Dr. Dooom. Why do I bring this album up? Simple. It has one of the funniest and most bizarre album covers I've ever seen. Just search it up online. It's worth it. Anyways, I didn't really like this album as much as I hoped I would. It is by far the weirdest hip-hop album I've ever listened to. Of course, this isn't inherently a bad thing. Plenty of great hip-hop albums are weird. I like Death Grips, okay? I'm not against the idea of weird hip-hop, I swear. However, I just don't really vibe that much with this album personally. I will say that I do vibe with the production quite a bit. It's got this almost psychedelic feel to it and it's sonically interesting. I think Dan the Automater deserves praise for his work on this. The writing is where the album kinda loses me. The album is abstract and absurd, but it's also rather juvenile. The album's got these sorta uncomfortable skit-like tracks like "A Visit to the Gynecologist" that I just don't really align with personally. I get the appeal of it, and I could see someone else really vibing with it. It's just that that person isn't me. I'm also not huge on Kool Keith's rapping. Oh, sorry, Dr. Octagon's rapping. Sometimes he sells the vibe, but other parts feel kinda aimless and almost flowless. I don't know. I will say that the concept is also kinda neat. It hasn't really aged the best, but I could see the concept being executed in an early 2000s comedy film "This could never be made today, but god is it funny" type way, you know? Overall, I wish I liked this more. The ideas are interesting, but I don't really enjoy the execution that much. It's not bad, but it's not really for me. Low 3/5.

This didn't jump out at me any more than the other rap on the list.

Incredibly dated and sophomoric, but definitely exists in a more avant-garde place than a lot of rap at the time. Earth People is an absolute ear worm.

Fun, funky and unextected, though not consistently

The reviews here made it seem so much worse than it was. I think it is definitely way more memorable than other hip hop albums that I have listened here, a concept album about alien doctor and his unconventional treatment methods

Long live the weirdos!

This is certainly creative, and there are a lot of intriguing sounds going on, but ultimately it was hard to get invested in the story of a crazy alien doctor.

Overall Rating 2.53/5 (5.06/10). Probably the worst of the hip-hop albums I've gotten so far.

influential, but not one I need to listen to before I die.

WTF do I really need to hear this before I die? Ohh shit. Not what I expected. Kinda dug it.

I really love nerdy, sci fi inspired hip hop records. While this album contains some dated lyrics, it is pretty damn charming. The dark, boom bap beats are awesome and the flows are unorthodox. The topics can border on absurd, but the album isn’t afraid to embrace its absurdity. Also, the album cover is perfect, especially for a hip hop record.

Bra sound.

36/1001 First listen. I can’t believe I’ve never heard of Dr. Octagon before. After tomorrow’s album I’ll be getting right back to this one. Killer Pushead cover too. 6/10

Reminds me of Delton 3030 with horror rap influences. First skit was actually funny, normally I roll my eyes or skip them I like the beats, the flow takes some time getting used to DJ-ing is impressive too

I can’t go TOO high on this one just because if someone walked in the room and I was listening to this I would feel embarrassed. That said, to tell you the truth, I liked this quite a bit. It got me thinking about my extreme distaste for Eminem. In a way, they share a lot. Both kinda shocking, horrorcore type stuff. This comes off so much better to me though, like I get the artistic idea of it at least. Maybe it’s just that Eminem’s artistic perspective is “what if there was the most fucked up guy ever and what if he was me??” and that doesn’t have legs in the same way a nightmare sci fi version of the same thing does. Anyway this was cool.

I appreciated the weirdness

3 or 4 stars. Depends on how fondly I remember my time when submitting the rating.

Why do rappers refuse to release anything that's a solid 40mins? It's unique, interesting, funny at times but runs too long and I wouldn't be revisiting. 2.5/5. Raising to 3.

Pretty funky.

I probably have more patience for this than many since I used to listen to ICP. However, I have to admit that most of these rhymes are pretty stupid. Some creative beats though.

I've never listened to this album, but I knew one or two songs (5). Really great production, not quite sold on the raps yet.

Beats are great, but the lyrics don’t do it for me 3/5

I think I’ve heard this album before, but it’s been quite a while. It was not bad.

makes me want to read the lyrics

Haven't heard of the guy before but the title and cover art made me sceptical... I gained some confidence when I saw that Dan the Automator produced it and yeah, the beats on this are really good. But the guy's rapping and lyrics are not good, hilarious even. The lyrics feel like somebody's rapping an Uncyclopedia article to me (shoutout for mentioning Copernicus randomly). It's comedy rap to me. And yet I can't hate it, "so bad it's good" type of thing. Gotta appreciate the weird theme that's never been done before and hasn't been done since 3/5

Fun listen, and a couple really good tracks on here. My favorite is probably Earth People. It does start to wear thin after a while, but overall decent.

First Hip-Hop album on this list! I know this album, but never listened to it. Really reminds me of "Deltron 3030". Just don't like immature lyrics, but I read that's Kool Keith's character and his sense of humour, apparently. Ah, looks like Dan the Automator produced this, so "Deltron" connection is established. Good hip-hop albums which I just rated 3.5/5.0 on RYM, could go either way here.

Personal enjoyment: 3/5 Relevance to this list: 4/5

this is weird but I actually enjoyed it. I think there's something really smart here but it's buried under layers of like 13 year old boy humor

Weird lyrics, weird topics. Kinda utopic. Nice vibe for a silly car drive.

You know the beats are fire, and honestly carry this album. The lyrics are weird and abrasive, and yet... it kinda works. Just a weird album, but manages to be good at times. I enjoyed more as it went on.

A Visit to the Gynecologist is one of the worst songs I’ve ever heard, rest of the album pretty cool tho.

Strange early hip hop concept album. Beats are pretty good. Lyrics aren't the strongest and drift into some weird themes. Not a bad album, and can see how it influenced other artists. 3/5 Might listen again

I found it generic but I'm sure this angry 90s hiphop sound has a dedicated audience

A good example of smooth 1990s hip hop, Dr. Octagonecologyst, is good but long. Also I wonder where the artist, Dr. Octagon, got his degree and how hard he studied in fucking. According to his excellent wikipedia page, "Dr. Octagon is an extraterrestrial surgeon from Jupiter who uses space technology and primitive tools to perform medical procedures on his patients, some of whom die as he conducts his rounds, while others are murdered by his careless, barbaric acts. Octagon also practices as an orthopaedic gynaecologist and seduces and engages in sexual intercourse with his female patients and nurses." Doesn't sound like a strong doctor to me. This is a good album to play in the background of a chill after-hours party. Top tracks: "I'm Destructive," "Earth People," "Dr. Octagon"

Final thoughts: I believe this album deserves to be on the list because, for me, it opened up a lot of doors to more, uh, "alternative" forms of hip hop. That being said, it's very uneven, too long, not as funny as Keith thinks it is. ******************************************************************************* --Intro...oh my --3000...meh --I Got to Tell You...interlude --Earth People...I like the sound and beat, his flow doesn't always work for me --No Awareness...Kool's flow seems better here, fits more with the nice production. Sir Menelik seems to be having issues getting each syllable out. tbf, there are a lot of syllables --Real Raw...the first 3ish minutes are boring. Then someone starts scratching (Q-Bert?). it elevates it a little --General Hospital...skit --Blue Flowers...the sample is my brand of weird but the way Keith raps on here kind of forces each track to sound too similar --Technical Difficulties...not for me --A Visit to the Gynecologyst...oh my --Bear Witness...instrumental. It's good --Dr Octagon...the cool production continues but there are so many words! There are so many syllables I can't tell if they're on beat. Or if they're even supposed to be on beat. Sir Menelik again! --Girl Let Me Touch You...here we go, I like it when Keith allows himself to breathe --I'm Destructive...something with more of a rock feel --Wild and Crazy...probably my favorite track. the simple, driving bass beat really ties it all together --Elective Surgery...skit --Halfsharkalligatorhalfman....it certainly fits the theme --Blue Flowers Revisited...not sure you need to revisit anything when your album is already over an hour --Waiting List...starting to feel like I'm in a waiting room --1977...I do like this but it doesn't really belong here. And, again, this album is long. cut this one and put it on something else

Actually really enjoyed this. Not a huge rap fan, but it was fun and interesting.

Guys 20 tracks? 20? Maybe there was some fat on this thing with skits that have poo poo and pee pee jokes. I guess this guy has influenced just about every big time rapper. But it's kinda jumbled nonsense. Have you heard how Phil Collins came up with Sususudio? He had a track and was making a melody with pure noise and just kept the noise? Well I have half a mind to think that's what this guy did but didn't admit to it.

Sounded good for a hip hop

Great production and flow. I just don't think it's super distinctive from the other records at the time for me to give it a higher rating.

I like his rap style but it gets a bit tired

Tis too long. Ablation is recommended.

I'm not sure is some of the skits and stuff are meant to be funny, but not really. There's sort of a concept of a character it seems, but it sort of feels like they're saying whatever. The flows and like hyper-scientific medical lyrical miracle type shit is not it really in my opinion, but I'll definitely award them for creativity. Also some of these beats are great with the synth basslines, which makes them quite unique. I Think there's some features that are actually worse than the main guy. There's also some more non-rap influences, like some of the trip hop and rockier songs. Also not too sure about some of the chorus singers, they just don't sound too good and are often too happy and slightly ruin the mysterious beats. Favourite songs: 3000, Earth people, real raw, blue flowers, and probably loads more that I missed as its quite long. Overall around 6/10

Best Song: Bear Witness. The scratching on this track is on another level. Worst Song: A Visit To The Gynecologyst. Strangely, I'm not a huge fan of perverse medical Mickey Mouse. Overall: A really weird grab-bag of ideas. Honestly, I loved lots of the sampling and scratching, and even the floating, free-association rap style was good. Sadly, a lot of the sex humour feels really dated, and you just have to kind of cringe until its over and you can get back to the good parts. Still, I appreciate this level of dedication to silliness, and it is still a listenable album.

It's decent music and a shake-things-up-enough listen, little weird sometimes, but nothing's really giving it the spice to stand out amongst everything else. Just sort of at a level of consistent but not particularly enthusiastic "good"

Good rhythm and style, just not my groove.

Noch amüsant, viel abwechslung

Hip-Hop

Not sure how to feel about this one, it certainly should be considered art. However I find the choruses to be overly repetitive and uninteresting. The rest of the lyrics are very good! With that said the lyrics really are the only interesting thing going on, the beats are incredibly simplistic and I simply do not understand the appeal of record scratches. The album is at it's best when treated as a story first and music second.

“Call 1-800-PP5 1-Doo Doo, I’m in your corner.” Dr. Octagon is a homicidal, extraterrestrial, time-traveling gynecologist and surgeon. My old job! I would have loved this back in 96.

always heard about dr octagon but never knew the music. kind of like hip hop weird al? or ween? or some sort of rick and morty thing? funny enough, as well as some slick dj shadow beats, but not reaching back for it.

This is an interesting record, but I’m not sure it rises to the level of “must hear”. The music is great, love the beats and Keith’s flow, but the lyrics/concept are basically what you’d get if you locked 10 12 year olds in a room and told them to write dirty jokes. I’m not offended by the content, just by the lack of humor or originality. Great beats, great flow, puerile rhymes.

3.1 1x

Sort of like a perverted MF DOOM

Amazing beats, some decent tracks but the lyrics are both out of time, and mostly average at best

-this is like some shit Jesse Pinkman would listen to -the concept seemed kind of entertaining to me. and there are a lot of genuinely good boom bap songs on here, though it kind of overstayed its welcome and had some dull moments. probably wouldn’t relisten but i appreciate it -Favorites are Real Raw and Half Shark Alligator Half Man

This was fucking weird. The guys got flow, for sure. The abstractness/surrealism/non-sequitur character of the lyrics makes it somewhat hard to tell if he's one of the greats, or uses these "features" to obscure the fact he can't maintain the flow and have substantive, meaningful rhymes. Second to none turntablism too. This is hard to rate, but I'm going ⭐⭐⭐

Fat beats and samples. Pretty good rapping. Mediocre bars and weak skits. Cool to hear something that I’ve never even heard about from a genre that I’m pretty into anyway!

Unfortunately this was the first album I fully listened to off this website. Funny album. I seen some of the reviews, people bashing it for being immature and this and that. I probably wouldn’t listen to it again but it’s not even that bad, kind of enjoyable even. The whole time just thinking what sort nonsense is coming next.

Interesting album, the lyrics we're vulgar and sometimes funny, at least it was a more exciting album then the last two days. I like the album cover.

I ended up liking this more than I thought I would, pretty funky, pretty fresh, pretty funny at times.

There’s a horse in the hospital!
