Man this chemical bros album. They looked at prodigy and was like… hold my beer

What. An. Album!!! Absolutely breathtaking big beat rock hip hop dance mash up! It’s absolutely tremendous! Genuinely not a bad track on this album, it’s fucking HUGE!!!

6 out of 5

Outstanding start. My guess is a 4 at the moment. Really nice, definitely a 4. Perhaps a 5.

Stadium worthy electronica that rocks hard in a severely funky place. Block Rockin Beats is a sheerest of slam dunk openers and Setting Sun which features Noel Gallagher is like an Oasis cover of Tomorrow Knows done right. Both superbly siren tastic and both British number ones. Electrobank and Stephen Hawking guesting It Doesn’t Matter futhermore are two delirious and extremely gallant extended dance workouts, It Doesn’t Matter itself only the start of a miniature grinding sandpaper dance suite. On top of that it saves its two greatest tracks till the very end. Where Do I Begin with Beth Orton is just beautiful and with such an immense build-up and breakdown and The Private Psychedelic Reel is as epic as the most epic thing. Overall this is big beat that just can’t be beat. Easy 5.

Feels so nostalgic, an album that feels like it completely sums up the 90's

that might be a top album ive listened to, reallu really cool tracks

I understand this is not for everyone and certainly not for every situation, but I really love the '90s techno/house/x vibe of these albums. Give me more!

My first electronic band and this is arguably their best album. GOATed.

A tru classic.

The electronic genre can be quite tricky to write about, so all I really can say about this album is that it's simply a banger. 4.5 bumped up to 5.

Big beats, big drum fills, big noise - I think this will continue to grow on me too, 4.5, will grow to a 5

"Dig Your Own Hole" is the second studio album by English electronic duo the Chemical Brothers. Big Beat, electronica, breakbeat and pyschedelic rock are the Wiki-listed genres. I'll go with that. The album was self-produced by Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons. It received critical acclaim and hit #1 in the UK and #14 in the US. The album comes out jamming with "Block Rockin' Beats." Laser sounds, the drum sample of Bernard Purdie's "Changes" and most importantly the bass sample from the Crusaders' "The Well's Gone Dry" and the vocal sample of "Back with another of those block rockin' beats" by Schoolly D. Great sampling throughout and as with most of these songs, a chaotic finish. In "Elektrobank," they speed up the drum sample of "Hit or Miss" by Odetta. Distorted vocals and more vocal sampling. Interesting explosion sounds at the end. "Setting Sun" begins with a grinding and electronic drum beat. Wild synth sounds and then Noel Gallagher appears with echoing and pyschedelic vocals. This is a weird song and the first single. The band uses another guest appearance in "Where Do I Begin" with Beth Orton. The melody is a sped up and phased sample of Mazzy Star's "Give You My Love." Wow, they almost make it sound better than it actually is. Even Beth Orton is hypnotized repeating "Where do I start? Where do I begin?" Creative is a good word to describe this album. Creative beats: drums, electronic drums, dance, hypnotic and just electronic. Creative sampling: speed changes, song selections and vocal selections. Creative synth noises and sounds. The songs get progressively chaotic. Some songs even have a pyschedelic edge. I remember this album sounding ahead of its time on 1997 and it still sounds futuristic. One of the better electronic, dance and EDM I've heard. A high recommendation to go back and listen.

Strong album

a classic.

Great overall listen

Absolutely grimy, relentless beats that will get your head bopping, your ears ringing and the rest of your body violently sweating. And once all that is done, you get to nod away to the much more mellow psychedelic treat that is the second half.

Just fantastic early electronic album.

Grand album

wait . . . . . 🤔 let me listening again 😍

https://youtu.be/D2jVUyPq4mI

Under rated, tbh. This is still going hard more than 25 years later. The Chemical Brothers are pretty handily one of the best artists of the big beat scene, a lot of it sounds pretty dated now. This does too, but it's also still cool sounding.

I gave Exit Planet Dust a five star review with only the text "Bangers", and I could really just do the same here, TBH. But I want to add that Setting Sun is amazing, captures the vibe of Tomorrow Never Knows and amps it up.

I like the way it makes my brain feel

Stellar, showing everyone how it’s done. Sound is full but so well balanced, everything fits 4.7

This is intense. I'm amazed at how many songs I know on Dig Your Own Hole. Great beats and samples. Liked Songs Added: Block Rockin' Beats Setting Sun Lost In The K Hole The Private Psychedelic Reel

Genius

Loves me some block rockin’ beats

What an antidote to that fat boy arse nonsence. Thisis an example of quality 90s eleconic music. An awesome album fron an awesome band at an awesome time. I remeber glasto 98 stuck in mud up to me knees dancing to this. Ooh they were the days me lad, when you could leave your back door open, everyone knew and despised their local bobby and drum and bass was still called jungle.

There's a time and a place for this repetitive beats nonsense, and Christmas day is as good as any. Perfect foil to all that carols bollocks.

While not perfect, it is great, I was close to giving it a 4, but Setting Sun tipped me up to a 5.

Oh man, what a record. Always nostalgic to hear the Chemical Brothers, especially the tracks on this record, but the album itself - funky, banging, diverse, fun, interesting, psychadelic, dance-y and does not sound dated at all. It rises, falls, punches and kicks, entertains and surprises.

Superb. Really enjoyed this. Also listened to other albums I hadn’t heard yet.

The Amazing Chemical Brothers! watch as they strap on their rocket skates and do battle with the wicked California Surf Nazis invading the ravefields of New Manchester in 11 thrilling episodes! witness as they do battle with evil normcore monsters created to destroy the K-Citizens wandering the fields, vanquishing each foe with their samurai swords and titanium-reinforced Stratocasters! be astounded by the death defying sonic stunts in each episode -- flying bass kicks in "It Doesn't Matter", flaming song structures in "Elektrobank", and their world renowned... "Block Rockin' Beats"! you might even get to see their elusive and astounding "Private Psychedelic Reel"! don't wait! don't miss out! tune in each Thursday for another, jaw-dropping episode! only on Big Beat Network: "We've Got The Beat."

This has been in my collection for many years. I'm sure this is one of those genres that you either love or hate. I am definitely a Chemical Brothers fan. This album or the first one are probably tied for my favorite. The first record has more variety with some slower, ambienty songs thrown in. This one is pretty relentless with hard beats and multiple layers of chaos until the end, but it's pretty great. The songs with vocals (guests Noel Gallagher and Beth Orton) break up the record a little bit. And the Spike Jonze music video for Electrobank is a f*ckin masterpiece.

Classic

Excellent breakbear album, could not top nodding my head to it.

An absolute balls to the wall classic. Not only a good album of its time, but a building block for the electronic music that followed it. Pace, power, energy, form, skill and production combine something that everyone should be aware of. Its criminal that its so badly rated here.

When i listened this album i felt like im inside a mortal combat game or matrix movie.

The perfect textbook "big beat" / late-nineties british electro album that made the whole 'rock vs. techno' debate moot. You could also select Prodigy's *The Fat Of The Land*, out the same year. Out of the 11 tracks of *Dig Your Own Hole*, six explain why the latter is worthy of such a list. It doesn't look like much, but those six tracks alone are the equivalent of a 40-ish-minute album. There us the iconic "Block Rockin' Beats", with its no less iconic slapped bassline either ripping off Pink Floyd's "Let There Be More Light" or 23 Skidoo's "Coup". There are also the title-track, aptly named given that it digs the same groove than the opener ; "Elektrobank" and its climactic conclusion, like a jet exploding mid-air in slow motion, the hectic yet also melodic "Setting Sun", featuring Noel Gallagher, the moody and more relaxed "Where Do I Begin", and"The Private Psychedelic Reel", a flasy epic 10-minute closer. The rest, mostly drawn from the "electronic battle weapons" series of singles asking DJs to test them on dancefloors, might be a little samey and secondary. And follow-up LP *Surrender* might be more varied, and overall a better album, than *Dig Your Own Hole* (or at least one more accessible). Yet there is still something that screams "essential" in that record. You had to be there at the time to fully understand the thing now. But you *had to* be there, whether in a club or at a friend's party. 4.5/5 for the purposes of this list of essential albums, rounded up to 5. 9.5 for more general purposes (5 + 4.5) Number of albums left to review: less than 70, I've temporarily lost count here. Number of albums I'll keep in my own list: half, approximately (including this one) Number of albums I *might* keep: a small quarter, approximately. Number of albums I won't keep: a large quarter.

Love these guys.

Iba para 4, pero de pronto aparece Where Do I Begin y ...

This is a exceptional album, it was one of the first of it's kind and paved the way for this style of music. I don't think there is one weak track on it. I've listened to it before, and will listen to it again.

Yes!!

Excelente!!!

Truly, I’m just a girl who loves to dance. I’m especially a sucker for this era of electronic music, with those 303 buzzes and chaotic breakbeats. This style of music just scratches a spot in my brain. It’s the type of shit that would make me lose my shit in the club, but it’s also cerebral, and I have no problem listening to it sober during my 9-to-5. To me, Dig Your Own Hole is a perfectly balanced electronic album – it’s equal parts club and home-producer; equal parts rolling and trip-sitting. Sometimes I think it blends together so much that it feels less like an album and more like a DJ mix, which is fair, but feels less tight as a result. And I will say, The Chemical Brothers build songs in a much slower, less efficient way than their contemporaries, so you can sometimes get lost where you ✨are ✨ in the song. But I think these are minor critiques. When they want to get a room moving, they get that room moving; when they want to make that same room think, they really make everyone sit down and meditate on their lives. I’m not saying it’s better than Homework or even Remedy, but Dig Your Own Hole comes close, and is only a half-step down on the tier list of great 90s electronic albums. Huge fan, will be playing it loud forever now.

Still sounds amazing

Block rockin beats - ooo I like this. One of my favorite opening riffs. Dig your own hole - this belongs on the Kim possible soundtrack (my beloved) Setting sun - this one was interesting. The repetitiveness of some of these beats wasn’t my favorite, but I respect the album a lot for doing something interesting and different.

Block Rockin' Beats, Dig Your Own Hole, Setting Sun и The Private Psychedelic Reel очень хороши.

A nailed-on 5 and without any competition the best dance/electronica album ever made.

the only mild problem is that is this album is a tad long. but i guess in the context of jumping out of one's head in a club sort of negates that. this album is fucking vibey. i really like it, it's like being locked into a groove for an hour. turning off almost gives the sensation of stepping off a treadmill, the world lurching around you as you find your balance. love it. 5/5

Very different, yet fresh.

I realized I've been a "real instruments only" snob for a long time. I wanted to hate this. I loved it.

When it comes to electronic music, it doesn't get much better than this.

Love this album!

Block party starter Driving beats that move your feet Dance until you’re dead

Found a hidden (from me) gem! Cool music!

Dig Your Own Hole My fave chemical bros album, containing my fave chemicals tune (lost in the k hole - complete with backwards bass and vocals that is as close to being lost in a k hole without the titular chemical!) I’d argue that this album would be better without Noel Gallagher’s ‘setting sun’ which feels like a bit of a play for mainstream airplay and sales (how many oasis completists bought this album just for that song?) but the gamble paid off and paved the way for continued growth. For me, the tunes without ‘guest’ vocals shine brightest (electrobank) and the second half of the album is sublime from ‘it doesn’t matter’ through ‘don’t stop the rock’ and ‘get up in it like this’ which combine techno sounding synths with breakbeat samples and drum loops to create some fierce sounding electro - recommended 🤘🏽

One of the best if not the best big beat album.

Chemical Brothers...

I've listened to this a lot of the years. Good beats and interesting samples.

This is my favorite electronica album, and I listened to this a lot in HS and college. I don't listen to much of this type of music, but when I do, this is the one album I tend to put on.

Used to love this fucker back in the day. Now he’s a big time racist, elitist piece of shit. Had stopped listening by the time this one came out. There’s nothing necessary about this one. There’s no reason this should be on a list like this.

Love it, multiple replays. 5/5

Classic and a favorite!

Amazing

Lekker album is een vibe

Iba para 4, pero de pronto aparece Where Do I Begin y ...

I was only familiar with the first track on this album, but I've been a long time fan of The Chemical Brothers in general. This was a cool look into their older material. I really liked the use of the "slap bass" element throughout as a melodic instrument in tandem with the more traditional bass. Seems to be a bit of a signature on this album and it was a solid choice. I'm not a big fan of electronic music that becomes too repetitive and doesn't seem to go anywhere. This was the furthest from that. There were a lot of section breaks and return back to earlier sections that helped keep the music fresh and seem more exciting. These guys are pros. The songs moved seamlessly into one another, so much so that I sometimes lost track of where one started and one ended. The entire album felt akin to an orchestral suite, where there are separate movements but they all feel attached to a bigger whole. A solid album. Stand out tracks: Block Rockin' Beats, Setting Sun, Lost in the K-Hole, Where Do I Begin

F*cking SLAP machine

A Fantastic debut album with some surprise artists. I need to listen to this album more.

Great to listen to this again, it's been years. I think Surrender is my favourite Chemical Brothers album, but this is brilliant and the cover takes me back. Love Setting Sun, Get Up On It Like This, and Lost In The K-Hole.

Love it.

Great electro beat and danceable beats

Fantastic album. My buddy Dave was working at tower records outlet when this came out, and this hot french girl came in and was looking for this album. He had to tell her that they didnt sell it at his part of the store and sent her to the other building. He was so bummed that he didnt get to sell her this album - I was intrigued enough to buy it myself. I mean, if this album gets hot french girls to tower records, dont you want to have it on repeat? 5/5

I love The Chemical Brothers so today was easy listening (especially compared to yesterday's Tori Amos). “It Doesn’t Matter” was the standout track for me. Gonna keep this one on my phone.

All day everyday

This good album, i wanna listen this many times

Always preferred both the all uk before and after this. On listening back it’s just as bloody good.

This is a better album than I remember. each listen provides a different experience and feeling.

Really solid piece of 90s Electronic music I hadn't really heard before. Consistently great throughout, solid variety ranging from exciting and danceable to atmospheric and dream-like. Fucking amazing closing track. Despite its longer run time, I ended the album wanting to hear more, and if that doesn't warrant this being the first 5/5 of this whole run so far, I don't know what does. Definitely joining my regular rotation, needs to be the soundtrack to my next acid trip

The c the h the e the m the i the c the a the l the brotherrrrs! 5/5

Though it may not be their most sophisticated album, it's the ultimate expression of their early Big Beat phase. Block Rockin Beats, Setting Son are both immense, and Where Do I Begin an early sign that they might have more conventional song structures under all the dj action. Five stars, and six if possible for Psychedelic Reel which which has one of the best drops in recorded music.

Love this album, and always been a big fan of The Chemical Brothers. It was hard to choose favourite tracks as I've listened to this album many times over the years. But for the purposes of this review I'm going to say my faves at Where Do I Begin (also a big Beth Orton fan), and The Private Physchedlic Reel just puts me in such a good mood.

Absolutely bangin'. An A-1, tip top clubbing jam fair. It was a sandwich of fun on ecstasy bread, wrapped up in a big bag like disco fudge. It doesn't get much better than that. Fave tracks - "Setting Sun" is great, even with Gallagher involvement. Really, though, it's the one-two glide of "Where Do I Begin" followed by "The Private Psychedelic Reel" 😍

Great tunes, still sounds great

cool but not my thing

Where do I start, where do I begin? I always liked this album, but now - with the perspective of time - I can confidently say this is not only the best album to come out of The Chemical Brothers, this is also my vote for best ever of its genre. Powerful and relentless, exactly what the genre calls for. What genre, exactly? Electronica? Dance? [How do you refer to music where no instrument is actually played by the musician?] I prefer to look at it as electronic rock.

I guess I’m a Chemical Brothers person now.

I would like to do chemicals with these brothers

90s drugged up Britain strikes again, and I eat this up every time. It balances the psychedelic sounds with big beats really well, and despite being over an hour long, it doesn't drag due to the nature of the album as more of a dancefloor piece, a place where time dissolves. Love both the vocal tracks, great in different ways. This is to me is a club album, but with different stages of the night out. For some reason, I get a basement club atmosphere for this. The last two tracks feel like the quiet walk back, and the planning for the next night out respectively. 14/11/22

What an amazing start to an album! I really loved the first four tracks and then felt like the album gets a little repetitive and hit a bit of a lull. Then, I feel like it picks right back up. 'Where Do I Begin' is such an unexpected, beautiful change of pace that still totally fits in to the album and works great as a penultimate track. This is a super solid album, will definitely add to my library and continue listening. Standout Tracks: Block Rockin' Beats, Dig Your Own Hole, Elektrobank, Piku, Get Up On It Like This, Where Do I Begin, The Private Psychedelic Reel

This album is the heart of the party. It came out when I was 24, travelling Europe. It along with Daft Punk's Homework soundtracked my adventures. Even after 25 years the music on hear still gives me e-like chills and tingles. One highlight etch in my brain was having this album on an inflight channel for my flight home. The Private Psychedelic Reel coming on as my plane circled Sydney on approach to landing. The plane tilted and banked giving me rarely experienced view of my hometown

Some great classic electronic beats

Una obra maestra

Love that stuff. It's definitely not something I can hear all the time, but when I'm in the mood it slaps.

Did not know they went this hard

Loved it

90s dance techno at its best. Every song drew me in, and few times I stopped what I was doing to dance. Some of these tracks had some super funky beats, which is next level techno mastery. I'm adding this album to my favorites. 5 outta 5.

This record was my first introduction to The Chemical Brothers and it blew me away at the time. Innovative, stylish, and focused (even though it kicks off with the all-out frenzy of "Block Rockin' Beats"). It doesn't restrict itself to a specific genre of electronic music, spanning big beat, drum n' bass, breakbeat, and even some psychedelic rock. Amazing record all around.

Fucking awesome

Dig Your Own Hole is the most complete recorded album I've listened to this journey so far. The entire album is covered in 90s grime. If you looked up the inspiration to this ad, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veTl59Klc5Q , you would see that it was the Chemical Brothers. They somehow make noise sound good. Best Songs: Setting Sun, Lost In The K-Hole, Elektrobank Worst Songs: NA

I was all about this album back in the day! The Private Psychedelic Reel is one of the best tracks on the album.

Actually goated. I need to rave to this

Amazing album. High energy music that is infectious and more catchy than it has any right to be. The experimental production, rap samples, and hooks elevate this above being an ordinary electronica album.

i don't know why i've never realised it before but the chemical brothers are fucking brilliant. no idea why listening to this album sat at home on my own is the thing that has sparked my epiphany and not the times i've seen them live and countless times i've listened to albums and loved it. This album is 25 years old. madness. i'd be surprised if anything released this year will sound as good in 25 years.

A very big one from my yoof this. A life defining album for me. The first dance album I remember falling absolutely head over heals in love with. It has aged really well too which a hell of a lot of 1990s electronic albums haven't. Private Psychedelic Reel in particular still sounds absolutely humongous played as loud as your speakers can take it. It was a long slippery slope for me, from listening to this as a 13 year old to many, many a lost night spent gurning my chops off in dark, sweaty rooms in my later years. What a fucking slope that was though.

I don't think this is as strong an album as either Exit Planet Dust or Surrender, but the brothers Chemical sure are good enough to get one of their weaker albums into this list. Saying that - "it doesn't matter" is one of TCB's finest tracks. Bonkers, bassy, interesting enough to keep the ear and visceral enough to carry you off somewhere else. It's going to be five stars, obviously.

Just really interesting influential avant-garde electro!

"Block Rockin' Beats" is probably what most people remember from this and that's not without reason, it's the epitome of big beat electronic music. If "Dig Your Own Hole" was just more of that it would still be one of the best of its genre but it is definitely not just more of that. Instead we get a solid dose of Beatlesque psychedelia featuring Noel Gallagher at the height of Oasis-mania on "Setting Sun" and the gorgeous journey that turns into a really bad trip (and one of the best songs of the 90s) "Where Do I Begin" with a stunning vocal by Beth Orton (where has she gone?)

Awesome

love this album. i remember it at the time and was a fan of the chemical brothers. they made list of good stuff and this was right up there with the best.

I love this album. It’s got so much going on. Really expressive drum patterns, fabulous melodies, perfect vocalists. And a damn fine groove all the way through.

Wow, this is next level electronic music! I enjoyed every second of it, despite the ridiculous loudness (loudness war?) of it. I love the beats and the hooks (is that "Tomorrow Never Knows"? they even nailed the guitar wails in it) and how the album as a whole doesn't sound like a mobile game that involves polygons. I never knew electronica could be this good. What an experience. Another highlight in this 1000+ day project.

Still my favourite electronic album of all time. Kinda wish I got another TCB album to check out because I'm so familiar with this one, but I can take that into my own hands. Incredible production, can't help bopping to this. And Where Do I Begin still gives me chills.

Excelente disco

Glad to hear more of the chemical brothers!

Bam!

Fantastic but the intensity is so high its hard to power through the whole album

Awesome.

Enjoying it as good background work music.

Excellent

I’ve been on a really good run for the last week, having three 5 stars and four 4 stars, but when I saw this generated I was ready for it to come to a crashing halt given my general dislike of Electronica. Surprisingly though this was great, there was no point where it started to drag or I got bored of it. It’s not something I’m going to rush to listen to regularly but I could definitely see myself going back to this at some point. Top Track - Setting Sun

Where do I begin is the best song

This was one of the better sample production records of the 1990s. So many ideas pursued that had not really been done, quite in this way, by the time it came out. "Block Rockin' Beats" was one of those tracks that transcended its form and was embraced by people from many genres. "Setting Sun" is quite probably the best track that Noel Gallagher was ever a part of. Admittedly there are spots where the experiments hang around for too long. Worthy for the 2 songs and the genre smashing production ideas that were fairly new at the time.

So close to a five. Feels very influenced by the big beat era (ala the prodigy) but still has more of those trancey, psychedelic, and even beautiful moments to it. My fave chemical brothers record will likely not be on here at this point.

Great album but my cat hated it

Great energy on this one, starting off hot with Block Rockin’ Beats. Electrobank and Piku play nicely back to back. Good album to work to or workout to. I know they get compared to Prodigy but the Chemical Brothers music goes down so much smoother than anything those skids have done. Great album art on this one as well. 4 stars

Amazing how elitist people get over electronic music when they'll get hard for every mediocre Beatles rip off on this list

“Widely regarded to have nicked our sound” - Super Hans

Favorite Track: Block Rocking Beats

A lot to like in the EDM arena. Sounds a plenty, mixed around a funky beat. Stand up and shake it!

The sound of the 1990s in one fell swoop.

This made me want to rave

so sick

This album is carrying me through an early morning at work after a late night at work. Like that Hunter S. Thompson quote about music putting extra gas in your car or whatever he said.

I'm having an insane run of albums lately. Dig Your Own Hole is a downright masterful piece of electronica, particularly the '90s Big Beat scene. It encapsulates everything great about the sound. The beats are incredibly dynamic, powerful, versatile and layered. The odd appearances of vocals and the various different soundbites sprinkled throughout are perfectly placed. Every track has a wonderful flow to it and every single progression feels very natural. The album's centerpiece is a brilliant homage to The Beatles featuring Noel Gallagher. The rest of the tracks are just as great, though. It's hard to pick a favourite, each one offers something different and serves the album tremendously, aside from a couple of slightly weaker moments, which is to be expected with a runtime slightly exceeding an hour. The only flaw of Dig Your Own Hole is that it's not Surrender, an album that somehow manages to sound even more vibrant, creative and diverse. Sadly, it's not on the list, but I encourage everyone who enjoyed this album to give it a listen. Favourite track: currently, The Private Psychedelic Reel

This album challenges and soothes my ND brain. The beat is predictable then shifts with complications afford in. Mini explosions within each song provide hits of excitement. Brings me back to the 90’s when I was young and athletic and all the other 20-something’s were at raves loaded up on X, not me though.

Got in the zone and cleaned the whole dang house to this

great EDM album with enough variety to sidestep the usual monotony pitfalls of electronic music 4/5

I dig it. Even features Beth Orton on a track.

Not my favourite genre, but this is probably as good as it gets

This is what pumps me up!

This was some Block Rockin’ Beats.

Liked it a lot. Middle of the album kind of lost some steam, but it started strong, and ended well.

Yeah sure!

4/5 https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/the-chemical-brothers/dig-your-own-hole/ Not every song is a hit, but so many are. Starts and finishes with two absolute club bangers, has great vocal tracks with Noel Gallagher and Beth Orton, and all other songs are also good fun.

An album to nod along to for an hour or so - it’s good! Favourite track: Setting Sun

I sort of conflate these guys with Fatboy Slim — they’re from the same era of electronic music, their styles are similar and they both broke big commercially in a genre that always clung to its faceless, underground profile. Chemical Brothers bring a lot of aggressive rock textures and funk samples to the mix, making them often seem often like electronic music aimed at people who don’t like electronic music. I’m squarely on the other side of that fence, and I like this best when they emphasize house and techno flourishes and not just the noisier elements, as on “It Doesn’t Matter,” with its throbbing, hypnotic bass. But I admire and enjoy the mission nonetheless.

Hadnt ever listened to a chem bros album from start to finish before. Enjoyed this!

One of my favorite chemical bros album this is such a cool frickin album some classic songs!

I have to be in the mood for this kind of sound but as far as electronic music goes it seems pretty good to me.

Second review of this cause of the group, but I feel the same: I’m a simple man. If it makes me want to dance, I’m in

Absolute smoke.

So far, it's all nice. <3 "It Doesn't Matter" in "Don't Stop the Rock" sta bla fakin intense. Ampak, se ne ustavljamo, takoj te fukne v "Get Up on It Like This", še zmer se komadi prelivajo en v drugega. Na "Where Do I Begin" poje Beth Orton! Fajn komad. Ful mi je všeč kako se do zdaj razvija zadnji komad, "The Private Psychedelic Reel". In ja, glih so bobni pršli zraven - amazing.

C'était excellent jusqu'à Where Do I Begin.

Not so long ago I’d have probably given this the bare minimum of stars. But I’m into it now.

Don’t think I’ve ever listened to a full chemical brothers album until this. Very enjoyable

Only really know the best ofs/singles and a couple of the recent albums but some banging album tracks on here. Great closer.

Great album, really enjoyed Where Do I Begin

This made me want to do drugs

Awesome. I know this style isn’t en vogue anymore, but this was a banger back in the day. Really nice trip down memory lane, and I honestly think it holds up nicely.

Expressive and innovative, denying no one a chance to move.

It’s relentless! Up until Beth Orton sings it never stops, I love it. It’s not an album to sit down and listen to you need to be on the move, I was walking the dogs.

As important as Daft Punk, can understate this albums importance to electronic music.

I liked it well enough to listen again

Reminded me of the beastie boys. Solid album. Words are repeated far too much.

Very cohesive. Feels like one continuous rave. But hard to remember individual tracks

I loved Exit Planet Dust when it came out when Chemical Brothers were less well known. They became massive on the back of this album so naturally I stopped liking them as I was a snob and a bit of a knob. I long grew out of this and really like the later Chemical Brothers albums which are more mellow/poppy but have never really listened to Dig Your Own Hole much. There are some really strong tunes on this album - I particularly like Where Do I Begin and Setting Sun - but some of the other tracks do sound a bit dated and It doesn't have the nostalgia hit of Exit PLanet Dust for me - so its a solid 4.

I wasn't as familiar with this album as I am with their debut (which I had on repeat growing up). "Dance music for people who like guitars" as someone at my uni said to me. Some really strong tracks on here. But I expect this to be polarising...

I remember getting this record and whether you like this genre or not, these guys nailed it - coming up on 30yrs old and it still cranks. Love the sampling and the collaborations (Qtip in here, amore!), they - and Prodigy - set the tone.

Remember when you'd open up the Sunday paper in the morning over breakfast and coffee, mesmerized by the images, titles, and captions throughout? Occasionally, you'd be wearing all white - pants and top, all crisp and clean. Then that feeling would start: the rhythm of topics and the meditation of the reading, coupled with a small anxiety in the pit of your chest, knowing that you'd have ink all over you soon. Your fingers were already holding onto a little bit of ink as you moved through the sections. Both mentally and physically, the words were sticking. You are keenly aware that you can't touch anything now. That's the small anxiety this album gives me.

It's the human factor that I connect with on this album. Noel Gallagher (at peak oasis), Beth Orton (before she became Beth Orton), Schooly D (timelessly where it feels like he's in the room) and Mark Marinoff (bringing the heat on clarinet). This is closer to a rock album for trogladites like me. It feels physical. Sweaty. Irreverent. I'm good with that. Private Psychedelic Reel still gets me going like few other songs. Best of the era 4.5.

Block Rockin' Beats Setting Sun The Private Psychedelic Reel

Another high quality electronica album that helped the genre cross over into the mainstream a bit. Block Rockin' Beats was a tour de force when it released and definitely made a splash within the music world. Setting Sun was another hit that has always been a personal favorite, though I somehow never knew that Noel Gallagher was involved. It's hard to call the remainder of the album lackluster, as it is still very solid but doesn't have the same oomph as the two flagship singles that really did rock the world. I might have had too high of expectations as I did enjoy the album but didn't blow me away as I thought it might have after years of rave reviews from the older brother. Still really glad to see more representation from Chemical Brothers and electronic music genre(s) overall. 3.51 stars

Punk/hip hop 90's feel.

Probably a 3.5 stars for me. The hits are good and the other tracks are fine.

I was thoroughly impressed by this, did not expect a record to be as loud and brash here. Very much ahead of its time, diverse and rich, I liked most of it. I do think it's not my niche or home, and some of it fell a bit flat, but I respect the hell out of it.

2000's arcade racing game vibes

Grand album - I mean for the time it must have been incredible.

for some reason this was a big album in my household summer of ‘97. i specifically remember it at the beach, even more specifically my baby brother singing his own version of “block rockin beats” over and over. good times. still rips!

Still don't love electronic music, but the Chemical Brothers make it interesting.

I actually kinda enjoyed this! Electronic music is not at all my thing (in fact it is by far the lowest rated genre on this site) but there was a fun energy to this project that I couldn't deny. Still got a bit repetitive at times but overall I could see myself listing to this one again. 7/10

some tracks are a bit mid but the ones that aren't are certified Bangers. Good shit

Love the ideas and rhythms explored in the album. Not really know if they really pioneered or created something new in the scene. But really liked the grooves and could enjoy the whole album without noticing the pass of time.

If you close your eyes it's like being in a massive warehouse with lasers and shit. Where Do I Begin is a nice tonal shift towards the end and I think it's needed and then The Private Psychedelic Reel is a good finisher. The title track is probably the best though, but would add many to my DJ sets if I wanted things to pop off

Minnen, minnen, minnen.... Setting Sun Block rockin Beats, Dig your own hole....

This is quite good but some of the songs are way to long. Otherwise it would be perfect.

Good electronica. Nice soundscapes you can shake your rump to.

Heard Before? Yes but not since it came out. Notes: - I'm a sucker for big beat, and this is the perfect expression of that historical moment. - formulaic as hell, but it's a formula I can dance to. - every song too long, and there are too many of them. but that's part of the point, I think. plus this is the height of CD era excess. - a great example of how (for me at least) music is about curation more than virtuosity. so many good choices here. - dynamic and thrilling mixing here, mashing together different fidelities, and exaggerating different components across songs. Verdict: I was never a raver, but this makes for a terrific kitchen dance party. Listen Again? Probably not. The Brothers are represented best by the "Brotherhood" compilation, but this did increase my desire to revisit their other albums.

Anecdote time: My one and only time seeing The Chemical Brothers live, was at the first ever Leeds Festival in 1999, so very much this era of their music. They infuriated the crowd by mixing tiny bits of Setting Sun into the music, but never actually playing it properly. It was a fun time. I still love Setting Sun. I really like all the singles from this album to be fair. I just am not sure I like anything quite enough to entirely justify the length of the album. It's extremely catchy and danceable though, and certainly fun if you're a teenager stood in a field in park with your mates and some smuggled in vodka. It's a bit odd listening to it as a middle aged lady while washing up the dishes. I like this better than the previous Chemical Brothers album the generator threw at me, and that got a 3. So, length niggles aside, this is getting: 4/5

Me and Harry's freshman Jazz teacher used to always say, "If it sounds good, it is good." I really enjoyed listening to this. A lot of it reminded me of those "No Pirating" messages on DVDs from the early 2000s.

Strong album that I know well. But, at times, feels a little too robotic and with not enough soul.

It was fine

Maybe my favorite Big Beat album I've heard so far, a really engaging and energetic listen that rarely overstays its welcome. A powerhouse, but at the same time it also comes across very much like a product of 1997. Not that that's a bad thing.

Purpose-built and finely machined by the better Prodigy.

I don't care if it's big dumb dance music -- I loved listening to this. It reminds me of my older brother, who (I'm pretty sure) had this on minidisc back in the 90s.

Better than I expected. I recalled that this album was big when it came out but I didn’t pay much attention because it’s not really my style of music. I was listening to this while working and I think that made it more pleasant for me. If I was trying to just focus on this instead of multitasking then I would rank it lower. As is, I’ll give it a 4/5 as being a better example of this style of music on this list.

Beepety boop, I liked this. 4/5

Last time I heard the CB was in the mid to late 90's. Great dance music\electronica. This album is a bit less repetitive than some I have heard some producer did us a favor by reining them back a bit, the exception is It Doesn't Matter which is is by intent. Great bass effects on this one and great for listening to with good headphones as they play with where the music is rather than just a flat split. Elektrobank plays around in the back of my head, bouncing between left and right channel in a way that made my smile shine. The hidden track, The Private Psychedelic Reel (hidden track) is absolutely outstanding and may be worth another star in my grading.

So cool. Not giving 5 cause I prefer their later, more complex stuff, but this album is super enjoyable

I bought this CD in ...1997 I think. Haven't listened to it in a long time, but I'm looking forward to a revisit

I hadn't heard this in some time. While Exit Planet Dust was a great listen at home or on the dance floor this one yearns for the clubs. The tracks are all excellent from a mixing perspective but are dynamic enough to not be boring when listening in the traditional sense. Electrobank and Piku are standouts in my opinion.

A few big ones on here (besides the obvious “Block Rockin Beats”). "It Doesn't Matter" has always been my personal favorite. Insane low-end that almost rolls like a warehouse techno kick + bass. Jilted bloops and bleeps float on top with the type-to-talk phrase on repeat, it all goes over so well. Minutes of buildup, tension, and release. This is a certified fantastic rave song. Really, the first three songs have you thinking The Chem Bros heard what The Prodigy were doing and wanted in on a more gnarling, visceral sound. They do it pretty well! "Setting Sun" sounds like a miami car chase movie soundtrack, one of the most loving things I can saw about a turn-of-the-century electronic song. Tracks 8 & 9 don't really do the job they seem to set out to do. Instead of providing some quieter, more varied sonic elements, they just seem dingy and half-baked. "Where Do I Begin" comes along and shows us how to actually achieve those things. Quite the ambitious closer which insists on mentally sending the listener to a spiritual rave of sorts. Something I've always thought the good Chem Bros songs do is tension build & release, as mentioned earlier. In this charged-up effort, I think there's a whole crop of moments that create these swells of energy or tension, just to crescendo or release at the right time. Additionally, Dig Your Own Hole has some nice sonic aesthetics. There's a bit of rocknroll 'crunch' to this thing, not too dissimilar to Justice's Cross. An easy 4/5 for me. At best, this album wields a pristine energy - I felt things similar to how I felt listening to Skrillex early on. I’d still implore the listener to go hear Fat Of The Land first, but this is still super solid.

Excellent!

Probably the best electronic music album I’ve heard so far on this list. Helps that it opens really strong with ‘Block Rockin’ Beats.’ Noel Gallagher and Beth Orton feature on two separate tracks, and it was really nice that they mixed in some good vocals and traditional music elements in with the noise and bass; excellent production. Some of the songs drag on too long (lots of 8-9 minute tracks), and about a third of the songs made me feel like I was in a Matrix rave, but the album was overall enjoyable. I would love to give this a 3.5, but under the current system I will bump this up to a low 4/5. Highly doubtful that another electronica album will do better than this for me.

This is an awesome album! Enjoyed this way more than I expected. Made me want to dance and move when I was sitting at my desk working. Put it on later to hype myself up. People hate on electronic/dance music and act like it’s just noise, but you can hear how well crafted every song and beat is on here. Loved it! Top Songs: Elektrobank, Piku, Dig Your Own Hold

the initial electrifying pressing and raw flashyness of the record loses itself halfway through the album giving way to a more pulsating and flowy experience. for me, that's something i enjoy listening to in a club setting but not as an album. still, it's a refreshing listen that i've enjoyed more and more with every playthrough

This is so The Matrix coded

Dancing to this

A very cool blend of electronic and rock music.

This is different from my usual music but really enjoying it ✨

This album literally made me throw my arms up in the air and also had me waive them around like a silly person. This is so much better than the Black Album.

I’m a simple man. If it makes me want to dance, I’m in

Fun electronica!

Really liked this

Esenciales. Otro disco esencial.

Grimy. In your face. Great

Superb

Noise, but fun noise 4/5 I can see tho why others might give it more stars, I can see why others might give it less

Pure adrenaline start to finish. High 4

Singles are awesome and overall sounds great

The Chemical Brothers have fully arrived with a much greater sense of journey on this record. They build on and refine their sound, keeping the best elements of LP1 then pushing them further, not necessarily harder. There are more psychedelic moments where they are reaching out of the speakers and meddling with the production in unexpected ways. Similar to LP1 the bangers are on the first half, but the biggest improvement is in the (relatively) more relaxed second half where a lot of the best songs sit. The final three tracks is a particularly impressive offering from a duo showing that they don’t just do high octane hits.

When this came out in 1997 I would never have bought it or listened to it as dance music was something I didn’t do! But because of working with a great mix of people from 2007 onwards I have been introduced to various music types that weren’t on my radar and dance is one of them and as an example of that genre this is brilliant. Throughly enjoyed it

Has a driving pulse throughout, commits to house and explores some great places. Meanders on two tracks

It’s been about 25 years since I last heard this album. While it definitely feels like a product of its time, it was cutting edge and forward thinking when it first came out. The Chemical Brothers always had a strong Neo-psychedelia edge and some rock crossover appeal, but they kept a solid club vibe as their foundation. One thing that always stands out to me about them is their use of analog equipment, especially their embrace of those classic MC303 acid sounds.

Excellent album. Block rockin beats still kills!!!

Opening with Block Rockin' Beats was a bit of an own goal, in that the album never manages to reach the dizzying intensity of its opener. Dig Your Own Hole is nevertheless a triumph of techno and big beat. It blends electro with pop sensibilities effortlessly, and towards the new millennium that was a recipe for stardom. The opener may be its high point, but other standouts include the deep techno masterclass It Doesn't Matter and the devastatingly disorienting closer The Private Psychedelic Reel. It could, however, have done without Noel Gallagher, whose crooning on Setting Sun detracts from the brilliantly utilised vocals throughout the rest of the album. While I very much enjoy this album, I still think Music for the Jilted Generation did it better and more persuasively three years earlier.

Some fantastic tracks on this album. However, some are a bit too long and there is a bit too much filler for this to be 5 stars for me.

A thrilling, fully engaging techno classic.

I love when electronic music goes hard like this, it's like metal except with computers instead of guitars.

I’m not that into this kind of music, but tge quality is clearly recognizable.

Loved it, it had great percussion and made me feel like i was in a early 2000s dvd piracy ad. Loved the LEGENDARY features and the album was very cohesive. There were parts that fell flat due to redundancy, however sonically this album blew my socks off.

Electrifying, energizing, galvanizing.

My previous album was by Leonard Cohen, and this album was the perfect antidote to that one. I didn't even listen to the album. I just looked up this band's music videos on YouTube, and I totally get the vibe. I don't think I'd listen to this stuff in my normal music listening, but I will definitely be revisiting this band in the future. Favorite so far: the video of The Salmon Dance. 4/5

REALLY liked it actually

yeah this is pretty good

A couple of bangers - Block Rockin' Beats and Setting Sun among them, but the rest is decent background mood listening

“DON’T WAKE TABEY! It’s the exciting new board game where raver kids sneak around a house and listen to techno as loud as they can without waking up Michael Tabor!” Pretty good album overall. It’s wild thinking back to how fresh and new this sounded when these guys seemed to be everywhere for a brief time when this was released. Now it sounds kind of dated. But I still had a good time. It was probably life changing to hear this played mega loud in a crowded room in the late ‘90s.

Muy buen album!

Really cool interesting album. A bit too long for me but cool ideas and songs

Cock slapping beats fuck yeah pew pew pew dig the butt hole

bangers. such cool noises

I’ve always liked The Chemical Brothers, though their greatest hits have usually been enough for me, and I’ve never fully explored their albums. Today’s challenge gave me the chance to dive into Dig Your Own Hole. The positives: the album kicks off in style with Block Rockin’ Beats and the title track, both huge club anthems. Setting Sun is another standout, with Noel Gallagher’s vocals giving it real punch. In fact, the tracks with vocals generally bring much more to the table. The negatives: after Setting Sun, the album starts to feel repetitive, drifting into long stretches of synth-heavy noise. Tracks like Don’t Stop the Rock and It Doesn’t Matter don’t add much, and songs such as Piku and It Doesn’t Matter drag on far too long. In summary, this confirms my view that The Chemical Brothers shine brightest on their singles. For me, their greatest hits compilation is more than enough. Favourite track: Block Rockin’ Beats is an undeniable tune, and Setting Sun features some of Noel Gallagher’s finest vocals — both are 90s club classics. Least favourite track: Not bad as such, but Piku and It Doesn’t Matter felt overlong and added little. Album artwork: A cool and striking cover.

Back when EDM felt like an artform and melded genres.

at least a four. we'll see how it magnetizes me over time.

Diminishing returns, particularly after Exit Planet Dust, but still enjoyed it.

78/100. Some lovely electronic music, glitchy, loud, big beats and bass. The sounds bring nostalgia but keep it sounding modern and up to date at the same time.

I thought this was gonna be a 1 star at first but then I got into the groove. Nice

The cover is deceptive! I was expecting grunge. I've heard the first song on the Bridge. I like the beats.

This album is great example of the electronic dance music movement that really spread wide during the period. They were arguably one of the best known to participate in the style for reasons that are obvious in this album. Catchy hooks, good beats and interesting choices.

1997 One I own. Played this a lot back in the day, particularly in the car. It also benefits from not hearing in a while, because it's decent, though very much of the age. Also, I'm reminded me of the non-metal period I sustained for a while during the nineties. I'm back now though 🤘 Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ✅️ probably, but not for a while Strong★★★★☆ (7/10)

What it is isn't necessarily great, but it's effectively perfect at what it's doing. More laser beam sounds than I expected. I like Prodigy more but it's the same vein.

Composition is king here. I was on the highway for the listen, a good place for this listen. Sometimes it made me drive faster than I wanted to. Goodbye.

I haven't listened to this record since it came out when I was 13. Still rips.

Still sounds interesting and exciting.

I will, in fact, be digging my own hole.

Really enjoyed this album. Was doing advanced natural product synthesis (shout-out all my organic chemists in undergrad) while listening through this album for the first time and it was awesome. This album really makes you feel like your moving somewhere quick with its slap base riffs and heated drum lines. Favorite album cut off the album was Dig Your Own Hole.

Loved it! 4/5

Get Up On It Like This. Your Own Hole, Electrobank, Piku, Setting Sun, Get Up On It Like This, Lost In The K-Hole, The Private Psychedelic Reel Menos favorita: Don’t Stop the Rock #DAY 33: 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die Things just got trippy—the first electronic album I’m covering, and it’s a beast. Apparently released around the same time as Homework by Daft Punk, this is a classic of Big Beat, a genre that carried huge weight in the UK’s live music scene in the late ’90s. The Chemical Brothers pull you into a complete LP trance, full of energetic breakbeats and basslines that take over your soul. In fact, I started listening to the album half-asleep, but the relentless, festival-ready rhythms ended up waking me up—though I’m not even sure what reality I’m in anymore. The record kicks off with Block Rockin’ Beats, which is literally exactly what the name suggests—an explosion of rhythms and bursts of intensity shot out in strange electronic noises. It doesn’t go as far as Aphex Twin, who makes you feel like you’re traveling at the speed of light while future robots grind your brain, but it does make your body move against your will, transporting you to a night of intense dancing. For me, the drum sound and grooves are the crown jewels of the LP. There isn’t a single track without an amazing beat—from the hyperactive, “Amen Break”-style drumming in Elektrobank (apparently courtesy of Simon Phillips himself), to the cathedral-like percussion of Sitting Sun, to the unstoppable groove of Get Up On It Like This. The album’s atmosphere is also mind-blowing—you’re thrown straight into a dancefloor where you’re basically transcending. The entire tracklist charges forward with unstoppable momentum; the synths and stabbing noises feel like the music is trying to violently enter your body. A dark intensity dominates; at times it sounds like horror movie effects, like in Setting Sun or the distorted ending of Elektrobank. However, Lost in the K-Hole feels like drifting into a much more dreamlike space, almost like an inverted climax—or basically finally crashing into bed after a wild night. Where Do I Begin then feels like a hangover, with Beth Orton sounding lost in the calm of dawn, unsure where she even is. After that, the album closes epically with The Private Psychedelic Reel, a long piece of electronic music blended with exotic elements and a daring beat—it feels like the end credits of a film. That said, I do have a few criticisms, mainly that the vocal samples aren’t particularly interesting. They definitely match the overall energy, but I think they could have been used more creatively, or chosen with more striking refrains (though in Lost in the K-Hole, I do think they complement the drowsy vibe of the track well). Compared to similar projects from the era, like .....Endtroducing, Donuts, or Homework, I think it falls a bit short in that regard. But honestly, it’s brilliant in every way. At the end of the day, what I love most about this type of music is when the beats get stuck in my head—and this record nails that perfectly. I danced a lot to Hey Boy Hey Girl on Just Dance 3 as a kid, so it’s no surprise I love this album so much. :) Favorites: Block Rockin’ Beats, Dig Your Own Hole, Elektrobank, Piku, Setting Sun, Get Up On It Like This, Lost in the K-Hole, The Private Psychedelic Reel Least favorite: Don’t Stop the Rock

Kickass hiphop beats. Basically all beats and samples; no verses, some choruses. 90s-2000s vibes all over. Sounds like The Matrix soundtrack, inspite of having 0 songs on the OST.

Second album by them that I was surprised how much I really enjoyed this album. I have *Exit Planet Dust* just slightly ahead of this one, i think mainly because it's a lot fuzzier and dirtier. But this one definitely has its merits and in some cases even better than their debut. This album starts off really strong first couple of songs are just fantastic, it does sag a little in the middle for me but it ends quite frankly on two of my favorite songs of the whole project. "Where Do I Begin" with Beth Orton, is my favorite track on the whole album and quite frankly Beth's best bit outside of "Best Bits". And the closer OMG! "The Private Psychedelic Reel" it's such a tour de force of what The Chemical Brothers do best. Still slightly favor "Where Do I Begin", but this track is right up there with it. (8.77) ★★★★

I like big beat quite a lot, not my favourite of these types of album, but solid. 4 stars

The first half deserves 5 stars but the second 3, so here, have 4

Probably more of a 3 if I’m honest … but I’m giving it 4 for the nostalgia value 😊

Though not a fan of techno music, I heard this album when it was first released, and loved the beats. I just cannot explain why. Maybe the voice snippets, maybe it being more "pop" techno than other bands, but I could listen to this often.

More varied then the reviews seem to make out here, some very familiar songs here but overall a decent album 4*

Hooked me, lost me, hooked me, lost me. Overall, very nostalgic for me from my college days. Block Rockin Beats was one of my faves and it still hits! 4⭐️

Solid EDM

How did I miss this album in the late 90s? Perhaps I was meant to miss it in order to discover it during my late 40s to channel my perimenopausal rage. I’m here for it! Deep bass seems to be connected to the deepest part of my soul and gives me life. I think the first half of the album is the best. The beats and production blew me away. It kinda hit a lull after track five. Overall, it’s still pretty interesting though.

It’s been about 25 years since I last heard this album. While it definitely feels like a product of its time, it was cutting-edge and forward-thinking when it first came out. The Chemical Brothers always had a strong Neo-psychedelia edge and some rock crossover appeal, but they kept a solid club vibe as their foundation. One thing that always stands out to me about them is their use of analog equipment, especially their embrace of those classic MC303 acid sounds.

"Dig Your Own Hole" de "The Chemical Brothers".

Sounds like i am in a 2000s montage trying to hack the mainframe

nice to listen to some early Chems

Proper dance music

This shit is insane

Apparently The Chemical Brothers make electronica that I enjoy. I might even like this more than ‘Exit Planet Dust’. A pleasant surprise. Bangs start to finish. Repetitive enough to enjoy the hooks but dynamic enough to keep from getting boring or annoying.

Well, that was a fun party!

Pretty good grooves, reminds me of the The Prodigy

Zeer goed album. Groot fan
