It's literally impossible for me (as well as probably thousands of other millennials) to rate this album with an objective lens, as we were subjected to listening to it literally countless times on car rides listening to FM radio - and there is a part of my brain that correlates these songs to the slow death of FM radio, and how it's JUST the same 10-15 songs which are played on the airwaves. But setting that aside... this is a monster of a classic rock album - and a debut album at that! Despite being played to death, I still found my adrenaline starting to pump while doing a full album listen - especially during the opening/buildup up "Foreplay". Yeah it's all a bunch of mid-70s rock cheese.. but who doesn't love cheese now and then?

Weird to listen to this as an album since most of them are played on classic rock radio

Boston's self-titled debut album was the most successful pop debut until Whitney Houston's debut ten years later. Largely the work of Tom Scholz, guitarist and songwriter that built a 12-track recording system in his basement. He assembled a band, and they crafted well-produced, guitar driven arena rock songs. The album includes hits "More than a Feeling," "Peace of Mind," and "Long Time," which drove the success of the album and established the band as a fixture on classic rock playlists.

When I started listening to this album, I already had "More than a feeling" stuck in my head. It's one of those songs that when you start hearing the melody, you know it has that attracting flare that makes rock music so good. And after having a chance to listen to this album, I can confirm that "More than a feeling" is not their only good song. Before I listened to this album, I kind of thought that Boston was a one hit wonder. So, I planned on listening to the first song on the album and then listening to the same classic rock beat. However, I can confirm to you that musically, their is a lot more than classic rock in this album. Boston uniquely dives in to country and pre-progressive rock while keeping the same sound elements of a classic rock band. One song that stood out to me well was "Foreplay/Long Time". The beginning sounds like a intro to a Dream Theater concert, with the piano riff and the sudden jerks of the low distorsion guitar. The constant modulations in the first two minutes also makes it seem a lot more progressive than it is. Seriously, I would think that this it was a dream theater song. That is until you realize that dream theater wasn't formed until 20 years later. Another song that really stood out to me was "smokin'" which has a country vibe that keeps their own style. There are other songs/things that I would go into depth, like "Let Me Take You Home Tonight" which is a very soothing song that I really love, but I won't write any more. My only complaint is the distortion sound. It's not bad but they use it on every goddamn song and it becomes very painful after two or three. A lot of songs would do much better with a clean, softer guitar sound. Musically, however, this album is great and I really appreciated it. 4/5 stars.

Cheesy and delicious!

"More Than a Feeling" is one of my childhood favorites. I was disappointed to not enjoy other songs on this record as much. As my girlfriend said, it's a great "start of road-trip" album. Fav songs : More than a Feeling & Foreplay/Long Time

Several things that I liked and overall very good, but not brilliant.

Dive bar karaoke music. It's hard to appreciate the music with all the overplayed-ness over the years. The silly (I mean "wicked") album cover makes me chuckle though. AI couldn't have done any better!

Fantastic mix of guitars, percussion, singing, and organ. A true classic. And their first album!

I’m realizing now that the DJs that ran the classic rock station when I was growing up were huge Boston fans. I never knew who was playing and to credit, but now I know how much ass Boston really kicks!

There is no denying the pop sensibility of this album. It’s full-on rock’n’roll with catchy riffs and hit after hit. I just gave in to the FM circa 1976 juggernaut and enjoyed most of these songs for what they are. Is it too big? Is it too cheesy? Have you heard the hits a million times? All yes, and they are still fun. I can, however, love it and leave it, and therefore it’s a 3.

Boston's self titled first album is a wall of layered guitars, supported by powerful vocal harmonies and irresistibly catchy hooks. The band's founder, Tom Scholz, was known for his perfectionism and innovation in the studio, created devices that allowed him to define a new sound that seemed fuller and more dynamic, described as being violin-like without the use of synthesizers. Few pairings in rock history rival the electrifying synergy of Brad Delp's extraordinary vocals intertwined with Scholz's guitar riffs. Growing up, this was the sound coming out of the cool kids' car windows as they drove around town. Also, who hasn't played air guitar to these tracks? This is just a fun classic rock album.

Very good album. I like it a lot. My top three are Hitch a Ride, More Than a Feeling and Peace of Mind in that order. The rest are good, but sometimes not very memorable. The whole album has hints of Queen at times, with the rock-opera vocals and guitar harmonies. 7/10 album.

I didn’t know I knew every song on this album. What a debut album, it’s a veritable greatest hits. This was a band that knew exactly what they wanted to do and executed it perfectly.

Solid music. Very recognizable sound.

As much as I try not to admit, the debut album from Boston was one of those life-changing records when I was growing up. It was an album I played continuously in high school, it was instantly accessible and it's sound had that epic "classic" rock sound built right into it, especially side one. I grew sick of hearing "More Than A Feeling" so often, it became annoying and to top that off, a group of my classmates performed that song in the school gym for the "talent" show and I can't unhear their version. The rest of the album is solid, it had a sonic powered energy, with catchy melodies and Tom Scholz's signature guitar sound that blew my mind away. I loved this record and it's a shame the second album couldn't live up to the expectations of the debut, which doomed the band and my interest. Hearing this again, brings back those nostalgic feelings good and bad, and though it's not a great record, it still has an impact on why and what music I listen to now.

4.5 stars. Such a fun album, opening three tracks are just peak soundtrack to good times. Tails off a bit after those three but still not bad. Master's from MIT to international rock star is quite a career for Tom Scholz. Given the summer night nostalgia associated with it, "Foreplay/Long Time" an all-time favorite of mine.

Essential 70s classic rock album with harmonies and melodies akin of pop.

Classic album start to finish. Holds up every time. There's a reason its still on the radio all the time all these years later.

More driving music, I already hate and love it. Nothing sounds less like the city of Boston than this record. Also nothing sounds like it. It’s an amazing production.

More than a feeling is a class track and the album was a pleasant surprise, not generally my thing but touches of the who always welcome, would listen again.

Man, does this album bring back memories. I remember liking it when it was released, but was surprised so many people thought it was the best album ever. Listening to it now, it does have a clean, crisp, and slightly breezy rock n roll feel to it. Which was different than most albums of the time, that’s probably why people lost their minds over it. It is good rock n roll.

No private session used for Spotify. I had this on cassette when I was much younger, I purchased it for 3 dollars at the neighborhood comic book/music store called "Dr. Rocks". Completely useless and off topic information. This album, like the Cars' first album, could just be their greatest hits. It rocks, screaming thunderous guitar. Scholz's guitar work is intense and Delp's vocal work is perfect.

Yacht rock so good you can feel the shag carpet

Hell yeah! This is the sound of a dad starting his midlife crisis in the best way possible - buying a muscle car and blasting it down the highway with the windows down. Every song is a perfect mix of soaring vocals, big-ass guitar solos, and synths that sound like they were beamed down from a spaceship. Pure, untouchable, over-the-top rock and roll. It's basically flawless (I mean, Tom was a perfectionist). Every song is just there in your brain, even if you don’t know how.. So OK, there is a tinge of repetitiveness in it, but it takes nothing away from the sum of its parts. He found a recipe and stuck to it. I like that this was recorded in a home studio, but that’s about it. Not for me!!!

I am simply amazed by how well it holds up. The craftsmanship is fantastic and its influence on rock undeniable. Unfortunately, so many albums, groups, and whole years of rock and roll attempted to replicate the joy & passion of this album but lacked the musicality, authenticity, and talent of the original. The studio work (arrangement, mixing) is impeccable. The harmonies soar; the guitar hooks groove hard, but remain unforced. A favorite & part of the desert island collection.

Mid-70s debut. Opener More than a Feeling is incredible. The album has been referred to as a landmark in '70s rock and has been included on many lists of essential albums. Hardrock, very melodic. Very good rock. Evocative, epic rock.

Boston - Boston Now this is the definition of Rock 'n' Roll, feels really nostalgic and very groovy with its riffs and melodies, and it's really catchy to listen. Good thing about this album is its consistency, and how they are able to bring new ideas to the table while still maintaining their sound. More than a feeling is notable mostly for familiarity. On the whole the album is just full of wanky 70s rock which is arguably one of my my worst genres. Its close to being unbearable. 2.5 stars but not worthy to be upgraded to 3

Nostalgic

14 year old me would have loved this album. Slightly older me did enjoy this slice of classic soft rock. A fair few bangers and not many fillers. Leaning towards a 4 which is more than I expected.

Boston More Than a Feeling is an absolute banger but I have never felt the urge to check out a full Boston album. I wish I had as this is a lot of fun, with just the right amount of pleasurable cheesiness - I love its Ron Burgundy rock'n'roll soft rock power pop vibe, like The Cars crossed with Foreigner, Todd Rundgren and a bit of Tom Petty. You can see why it sold by the bucket load Aside from the meticulous layers of guitar with that sweet sweet 70s tone, there is some great bass playing and some excellent harmonies and backing vocals on here. He’s quite famous for his studio jiggery pokery and making his own studio gizmos and it really does sound excellent, crisp, warm and smooth. Like a heated up Granny Smith. The more I listened, the better it got and the more I can see why it sold by the tonne. Peace of Mind, Rock & Roll Band, Smokin, Something About You, Hitch a Ride and Let Me Take You Home Tonight are classic 70s rock banhers, with great arrangements and catchy melodies. The only thing I’m not keen on is the Foreplay section of Foreplay / Long Time, it goes way too prog and way too close to Yes for comfort and kind of distorts the flow. However the Long Time section is a great groove and an excellent track. After 3 listens I thought this was a solid 4, but listening again today and reading back what I wrote above I think this is a 5; it's enormous fun, the songs are great, it sounds superb, the guitar is tasty, it nails exactly what it sets out to do and it’s all done and dusted in 37 minutes. In summary, it's a great romp through some soft/ prog rock riffs and good melodies. I find a couple a little weak, maybe clichéd, but the pace and superb musicianship keep it all afloat. On top of that one of the best songs ever written.

The entire album was actually solid start to finish, really great pace and sound.

It's pretty solid, easy to listen to, accessible, fun. Can't say it stole my heart, but I feel like denying it's solidness would be unfair.

I've always had a certain amount of contempt for Boston (the band and the album). You have a band that produced music that really feels like an attempt by a pretty clean cut rock band to make a "cool" rock album, one that feels like it wants to be edgy at times but has a sound far too clean to feel that way, and lyrics way too sterile to even pretend they're anything but dull-edged. Combine that with the fact that, much like Peter Frampton, Bad Company, and others, this album feels like it has everything that SHOULD make it an all-timer, five star album for me. It's from the 70's, it's a rock band, it's an incredibly popular album, and it's full of guitar solos. But see that's the thing - it's too perfectly tailored. It's too perfect, and it's far too clean. There's no roughness around these edges. The whole isn't greater than the sum of its parts here. There are amazing bright spots, two songs I love in particular in "More Than a Feeling" and "Foreplay/Long Time." But beyond that it mostly feels forgettable to me, everything a little too milquetoast for me to get excited about. It's corny, 70's dad rock and I only have so much capacity for that after a certain point. This isn't bad, but it's far from great in my opinion. I'd love to see what Boston could've done if they'd ever found some edge. Maybe they did, but the world didn't care about them after this album. What a shame. Three stars. Honestly, this album is perfection. The singing, the playing, the production, the songs.....And the crazy part is how it was largely written, and recorded by Tom Scholz in his basement.

Really enjoyed this! Yes it sounds a bit cheesy now but it's so much fun at the same time. I'd heard More Than A Feeling before of course but the whole first half of the album is excellent. Really short and full of energy with tons of guitar solos and soaring vocals, but also some great organ and clavinet sections.

A fine classic. Amazing how many of these tracks are still in constant rotation. Crazy that this album was recorded in a basement studio.

Over produced and decadent

Man how did this sneak in I know at least 1001 albums better than this. I listened to it in the car, which I guess is the best place for it. It's of a class.of Aerosmith, Cheap Trick and Kiss, and yet nowhere near as good with very little melody(go on, hum a Boston album track) and none of the driving rhythm that the above have. You can't sing along to it, and you certainly can't dance to it. Belongs in the brgai bins for people now in their late 60s to reminisce.to

not bad, nice sound, a lot of classics

This album goes so hard. The first 4 songs are all jams, the first 3 of which are also masterpieces. For an album of 8 songs, to have 3 all be too charting hits is crazy. The album is 36 minutes and 34 of those are Foreplay/Long Time. You could teach a class on how to perfectly execute a guitar riff as a bridge with almost any song in this album. It’s a band that really knows its strengths and plays to them.

this album straight up rocks. More Than a Feeling kicks it off, Peace of Mind starts rocking hard, and then Foreplay/Long Time, Rock and Roll Band and Smokin' are absolute face melters. I think the last three songs don't stack up as heavy as the front half of the album, but it doesn't feel fair to drop the score by comparing them. this album rocks, plain and simple

What a freakin one-two punch with more than a feeling and peace of mind! I have a special place in my heart for Boston. I will always treasure my dad and I jamming out to Bostons greatest hits in his Honda accord (of which he still drives). U can definitely hear the “classical music” influences the main composer had on the beginning of Foreplay/long time. Just an unreal blend of classical and power rock sounds. Was hoping to give it a five but it kinda dropped off a little by the end.

I listened to this one twice over the weekend and I’m still really struggling with the rating. The first three songs might be one of the strongest openings to an album that we’ve had on this list, but I think with how short the run time is and how front loaded the album is, I found myself losing interest towards the end in both listens. I think it’s a great album, but when rating it as a whole, I’m gonna have to go with a four. Hopefully I won’t regret this later on.

Is it impressive or sad that the bands greatest song is the first one off of their first album? Is it more impressive or sad that the bands second greatest song is the second one off their first album? Is it even more impressive or sad that the bands third greatest song is the third one off their first album? Talk about peaking early. This album, especially the first half, is awesome! The last few songs maintain that Boston sound, but don't hit nearly as high. This is the definition of a 4.5/5 album for me. Shout out to that time we were stoned at the Mission Valley movie theater and this album was playing before the movie over the speakers. Matt quizzed Turk on who the band is three times in a row after each consecutive song and he got it wrong every time.

I've been getting a bit tired of all the classic rock I end up listening to on this list but this one was actually great, really enjoyed it. Interesting and lively and the hits mixed in were great throwbacks.

This album came out in '76 when I was 14. It was EVERYWHERE all through my highschool years. Familiarity definitely breeded contempt. I grew to hate this album, band and the cultureal phenomenon that it spawned. So I can't really judge it fairly. Sure it's a good hard rock album with hooks up the wazoo. But I do not like the vocal stylings that is so much apart of it. The music is pretty good if a little cliched but the vocals is what made me come to hate it. 3 stars

It's still hard to believe this is a debut album. Rock perfection by a super group is more like it. Timeless, classic, melodic and cool.

Eh, after 'More Than a Feeling' very little stands out to me. It is by no means a bad album but it fails to leave a lasting impact upon me. I see the track listing to be a major issue here, with the bigger hits coming at the front of the album ,having less for the listener to look forward to. An album is more likely to get relistened to if the back end is as strong as its start. The 'feeling' I get from this album is that the blueprint began with MTAF and then the rest of the album is filling all of that out. In situations such as this I'd employ the phantom menace strategy of ending so well that it leaves you thinking the album is great when in reality there is little happening for most of the runtime. In my opinion 'Peace of Mind' should have been the second to last track as opposed to the second which follows into ' Let Me Take You Home Tonight'. An album such as 'Nevermind' is similar in its incredibly strong opening 3 tracks but it's able to pad the album out better than Boston with more diverse songs such as 'Polly' and ending on the incredible 'Something in the Way'. 6/10 Not got enough of an edge. This has to be Boston's best album - just one banger right after the other, starting off strong with More Than a Feeling. Every song is enjoyable, and there is variety across the songs.

Wat heb ik in de jaren '90 dit soort muziek (om het maar even in een grote stoofpot te gooien met allerlei andere bands) toch ontzettend vaak en lang gehoord zonder het ooit zelf aan te zetten. Het doet me daardoor sterk denken aan Radiooo Tieeeeen Gooold, de Philips personeelswinkel in het PSV stadion, jezelf kapotvervelen achter in de Opel Kadett (lelijk jaren 90 model, niet zo'n hele oude), met het hele gezin een dag lang kleding kopen in de C&A met die roltrappen waarlangs iemand ooit naar beneden is gedoken, van die blauwe Stimorol kauwgom die bruin wordt als je er op kauwt en daadwerkelijk anders smaakt dan alle andere kauwgom. Misschien klinkt het anno 2025 een tikkeltje fout allemaal, maar so be it. Op het album is geen enkel vervelend nummer te vinden en er straalt ook een soort onbevangen plezier van uit. Tempovertragingen, uitgebreide gitaarsolo's, bridges waarin daadwerkelijk wat anders gebeurt en zo op het einde nog even moduleren (dat woord kun je niet typen zonder aan Jiskefet te denken). Allemaal van die elementen die je tegenwoordig niet meer zo gauw tegenkomt. De openingstrack is legendarisch. Ik heb die meteen na het luisteren van het album nog een keer opnieuw aangezet en toen die voorbij was heb ik Spotify nogmaals het hele album uit laten rollen. Dan mag je een 5 geven.

Excessive, soulless drivel.

To me, this is a "very high 4." My only issue with putting it above 4 is that the entire album is not as memorable or great as the singles and a few others. The entire album, in itself, is not as good as it could be, and much of Boston's discography is that way, unfortunately. Boston made some of the greatest rock and roll songs, and the rest of their output is mediocre and doesn't reach the heights of a Big Star or have as many singles to offer as a Journey.

Incredible opening track but otherwise loud and boring. Would be a killer 45 of More Than A Feeling/Rock & Roll band.

Solid record, enjoyed this one. Overall a good hard rock album, excellent vocals done with just raw energy, which fit the music and the record well. I however can't say this was the most special piece in terms of lyrics. Overall fun listen nothing to deep, just good. Favorite track: More than a feeling. Overall score: 7.2/10

One of the greatest classic rock albums of all time

When this album came out, you could not get away from the exposure of the tracks. Boston was being played 24/7 everywhere. So I didn't have to buy the album. I really wasn't ready to listen to this time either. Having said that, it's a solid rocker of a 70's album with that solid "wall of Boston" sound--track after track after track.

This was great. Many of the songs I recognized from classic rock stations growing up, but wasn't familiar with the band. Boston is fantastic

Fun, a little cheesy. Reminds me of playing Guitar Hero back in college and drunken sing-a-longs. Unfortunately I've heard some of these songs too many times and they're hard to take seriously. This is the kind of music someone would put on the jukebox to prove they have no personality.

It was exactly what I expected, and I've no complaints. A solid 70s rock album with a hit or two on it. I did find though that the first half was way stronger than the 2nd, but given this was in the time of vinyl, it definitely makes sense to stack the front half.

Honestly, if this was a biased review, I'd probably give this 4 stars simply because I love the first 3 songs on the album where I've repeatedly listened to this album just so I can hear those songs. As an unbiased review, I think it really only deserves 3 stars because the back half of the album is simply not that great. It's listenable, but pretty meh

Jarenzeventigrock om door een ringetje te halen, de heren gaan lekker los, de gitaren gillen, prettige samenzang, een hitje erop, geen wanklanken, wat wil je nog meer. Dikke prima dit.

Onvervalste of wellicht wat ouderwetse rockplaat. Ik kan er maar weinig over zeggen. Heel stereotype, maar heel sterk uitgevoerd. 4,5 ster.

Toch knap, als het openingsnummer van je debuutplaat een absolute evergreen wordt. Verder is het een prima potje dadrock, alsof je arrow classic rock aan hebt staan. Meerstemmige zang, gillende (dubbele) gitaren, lekker uptempo. Ik vind dit stiekem heel erg leuk haha. Omdat die ene hit zo enorm groot is, hoor je verder nooit iets anders van Boston. Althans, ik ken dus die andere nummers niet, ik hoor ze voor het eerst. Ik heb het album daarom de volgende ochtend nog eens opgezet, voor ik dit een definitief cijfer ga geven. Ik hoor Peace of Mind nu voor de tweede keer, nondeju, lekker nummer man. Als ik Spotify zou hebben, dan zou ik dit zeker in een afspeellijstje kunnen zetten. Ik kan er niet omheen, dat ik dit gewoon geweldig vind, ondanks dat het misschien een beetje corny is. Het schuurt ergens tegen de glamrock aan, maar dat is helemaal niet erg. Het is simpelweg heerlijk. Ik ga lekker een 5 uitdelen

Not bad

It all sounds the same in the best way possible.

Sometime ms you’re just in the mood for some generic rock that doesn’t need you to think and puts a bit of a smile on your face. This was one of those days and this fitted perfectly. Never going to be the greatest record ever made but enjoyable for what it is.

I had a pretty low bar of expectation for this one. However, it was proggier than I imagined and had some fun OTT keyboard and guitar noodlings which saved it from being a standard MOR plod rocker. So, prog tendencies rescue the day, a sentence I never thought I’d hear myself utter.

This was pretty nice. Nothing spectacular, but certainly an enjoyable half an hour. Simpsons: Niche, but the illustration of this album cover can be seen in a scene of the episode "Homerpalooza."

Awesome album. Fun is definitely the word to describe it. More Than a Feeling is a great song, but the rest of the album is also epic. Will definitely listen again.

I don't know if i have any words to say just how amazing Boston is. This album gave me a lot of the same vibes as Rush (It could mostly be due to the fact that this album and 2112 came out the same year and are obviously of the same genre) did and since i loved 2112, it should come as a no brainer that i love this one as well. The songs had such a fun, upbeat and fast paced rhythm to them yet also had such good melodies inside them all as well. I would honestly say that my biggest issue with this album is i just want more of it which should just go to show just how amazing it really is. I listened to this album with my dad while logging my hours for driver's training. I'll always love it. I never get sick of More Than a Feeling no matter how many times I've heard it. Hitch a Ride and Foreplay / Long Time are my other favorites but every song is good.

Despite having never listening to this album, I know all of the songs incredibly well. Generally not my genre, never cared for all the travel bands of that era (Boston, Asia, Journey, Chicago…), but it’s hard to deny that these are some fantastic songs. The soaring vocals, melodies, power chords are all there. It’s so 70s you can hear the bell bottoms.

As soon as I see something labled as "AOR", I can't help but hesitate just a little bit. It's often the more polite way of calling something hair metal, which is a genre I can't stand. But this album represents the good side of AOR. Filled to the brim with catchy riffs and fantastic vocals, the powerhouse of an album keeps my attention for its entire runtime. It's just theatrical enough to feel epic, but still remains very down to earth and accessible. Definitely one I will be keeping in consistent rotation for the foreseeable future.

If you only listen to one Boston album make it this one because it may or may not be the only one! It has all the songs on it. Classic 70s Dad-Rock. Wicked rockin

Cheesy but still kind of fun. Felt like the blueprint for a lot of 80s rock.

Honestly could be a 5. A lot of bangers on here, both vocally and musically like foreplay. Reminds me of steely dan or Fleetwood mac.

Az albumon belül is túl hasonlóak voltak a számok kicsit, meg szerintem rengeteg más együttes is gyakorlatilag ugyanezt csinálja. Hiányzott nekem belőle valami egyedi csavar, őszintén. It wasn't bad, but there was nothing memorable about it for me. Even within the album, the songs were a bit too similar, and I think a lot of other bands are doing the same thing basically. It lacked a unique twist for me, honestly.

Boring.

I didn't get much out of this. All of the songs and instrumentation sound fine but none of it really stays with me. Maybe it suffers from being too classic, but this sounds like the rock played by a movie rock band. I was somewhat let down. It is super polished and high quality for a debut so I give them credit there.

It's music for old nerds, made by old nerds. It's great. Sure it’s overplayed, but I am fond of nearly every song on here. It’s a bit too “perfect” in the instrumentation as even the guitar solos are double tracked in places and are perfectly in time but that’s their sound. Last three tracks aren’t as good as the beginning but not everything can be a huge hit.

Solid classic rock. Simple vocals, catchy tunes, not overindulgent in the solos.

So hard to rate an album that I knew most of the words and am so familiar with 7 out of the 8 songs because they’ve been on rotation on radio since I’ve been alive. That fact alone means it’s an incredible album, but so familiar that I’ll probably never put it on again.

Some of the songs on here should easily make this a 5 but then there are a few that would make it a 3 so I’ve split the difference! Opening track is such a tune anything that comes after is going to disappoint to be honest

Excellent riffs. That really is my biggest takeaway from this album. They were truly unique. Everything else was good, not outstanding or anything, but definitely good. Vocals, instrumentation, and production all complemented each other well. Songwriting was noticeably thoughtful. I enjoyed it. Very good debut. 4/5

I just realized the UFOs in this album art are guitars. I like that Boston’s iconography is all UFOs and not like. John Hancock or something. Fenway Park. This is one of those albums that suffers from the radio. Like, Jesus what a fucked up first 3 songs, they’re so crisp and good. But also I’ve heard them 1000 times. So separating myself from that, what a good album! Wikipedia mentions the power pop influence and I think that’s why it’s so good. Fuck you that bass on Foreplay is so fucking good

Classic band, I actually did listen to them on and off growing up because of my parents. Its a fun album.

This is classic rock, nothing else. Do I need more of it? More, More, More ... my gut feeling tells me, definitely not. "More Than a Feeling" is on the rock radio over and over again. That doesn't make it any better for me, but it's actually a great song. The rest of the album doesn't mean much to me. A good debut, in any case. Do I own the album? No. Will I buy it? No. Stars? Yes. 2-3, I think.

Power rock at it's finest. Boston is not really my style, but I respect them. Three stars feels a little generous, but their spaceship looks cool.

Reminds me listening to am radio when I first got my license and didn’t have a tape deck in my dodge shadow. Warm sound and great harmonies. Won’t revisit but can appreciate. It has to be a 3, if only for the mere fact that Kurt Cobain writes Smells Like Teen Spirit when playing around with More Than a Feeling.

When you listen to classic rock radio, you hear Boston frequently…all off this album. Tom Schulz and Barry Goudreau’s guitar work on “More than a Feeling” and “Hitching a Ride” are incendiary in both their arrangements and performance. Their tone offers a perfect complement to Brad Delp’s incredible range, as noted on “Hitchin’ a Ride”. But my (everyone’s) favorite comes on the almost 8-minute epic “Foreplay / Longtime” where the entire band gets a chance to not just shine, but blaze! Fred Sheehan’s bass work paired with Sin Hashian’s drumming lay a foundation that Barry and Tom build on, and Brad crowns a capstone at unprecedented heights. My only complaint is that this song should have been 1st or last because it’s so good it kind of leaves you spent. Unfortunately, like all bands mentioned that found perfection first, Boston put out a 2nd mediocre album two years later, and several more every 8years after. But, man, what an album…

Boston is such a weird anomaly. If I recall correctly, MIT dudes who cracked the rock n roll code and made an absolute masterpiece and tons of money. They have only released 5 albums in 50 years. This first album is so so good. The songs just wash over you and you can jam/rock/roll to all of them. I saw these guys in concert in the 90s and it was super fun. I need more Boston in my life. This is my reminder to put this one into the regular rotation.

Pretty fun classic rock album. I liked it more than I expected to.

I pretty much wrote off Boston in my youth, but listening to it today I wound up enjoying this album more than I expected to. Musically this mostly rules. It's fun to listen to, and I kept being impressed by the solos and instrumentation. I'm not as excited by the lyrics and vocals, but they complement the music well enough. It's pretty strong overall, though I felt like the final track ended things on a weaker note. I also didn't realize until now that literally every song of theirs I've ever heard before today is on this album, and, with the exception noted before, the songs I hadn't were as good or better. Bonus points for the way the band handled the recording process for this album. I don't know that I need a Boston album in my life, but if I did then I'd only need this one. So I'm fine with it being on this list.

“More than a Feeling” is an absolute banger, but the rest just feels like your basic classic rock radio fodder.

Maybe the first album I ever listened to in full. My dad was a fan, and would often crank the volume to the max whenever we drove anywhere. Later on, I liked to put this on when shooting pool. If not for nostalgia alone, 5 out of 5, and glory to Boston.

Not usually a huge fan of generic arena rock, but this is different. Banger after banger. And Hitch a Ride was a much needed break from the sameness of the radio hits preceding it. And best song on the album

king of dad albums and what a debut!! You can tell where they got their influences from and that doesn't bother me. You can also tell how they influenced bands after them. If you like classical music, you'll recognize compositions layered in here rock and roll infused. It's a fun fun album. I lived in Boston for 6 years and this still get played at bars all the time.

Only heard one song from this album previously and really liked it so I was very excited to listen to the whole thing and can safely say it is amazing. I cant believe that this is the band's first full body of work, yet they sound like they are in their prime already.

King of the dad records.

I've been looking forward to reviewing this album for a long time. It's an album that I know well, and album whose songs I've loved since childhood. I remember hearing "More Than A Feeling" on the radio when I was probably ten or so, and being mesmerized by its beautiful guitar melodies and insanely fun chorus. I was fortunate enough to see Boston in 2003, and they put on an excellent show, and if memory serves, they played for three hours straight without an intermission. But enough of my backstory, let's fire up the turntable and jam out to one of the best classic rock albums of all time! Well, I’m actually feeling pretty on this album, and my declaration of it being one of the best classic rock albums of all time, while fairly accurate, might also be a bit hyperbolic in a way. Boston is no Rumors or Wish You Were Here, but just because it lacks the emotional depth of some of my favorite albums from the seventies doesn’t detract from the fact that it’s an incredibly well made and fun album full of solid guitar rock. “More Than A Feeling” and “Foreplay/Longtime” are fantastic songs which stand head and shoulders above the rest of the album. Both of these songs are perfect examples of Tom Scholz’s understanding and love of classical music, and contain beautiful and complex melodies fleshed out with fantastic guitar playing. Brad Delp’s vocals are outstanding, and I’m always jealous of how well he hits the notes on “More Than A Feeling.” The rest of the album is great too, and even though “Peace of Mind” is the only other single from the album, the five songs on the second side could have easily been singles as well. While I think this album is ambitious, bold, melodic, and perfectly arranged, it’s just not what I want to listen to a lot these days (I’ll always be in the mood for “More Than A Feeling” though), and I think that’s what’s weighing on me when considering what to rate this album. However, from an execution standpoint, I can’t really find many faults, and I think this is worthy of a five-star rating. Even if it’s just ‘Dad Rock,’ its impact and influence is massive, and it certainly deserves a place on this list.

This is the first album I bought myself. Paid a quarter for it at a garage sale when I was about 10 or 11. Had no idea what it was, just thought it looked cool. This album is perfect, no skips. 10!

I really like this album. Peace of Mind is one of my favorite choruses of any song for some reason. This album makes me feel like I’m in a bar and I love it. They have such good little harmonic moments. This album might actually make it into my rotation.

Considerando que todo el LP nace como una "grabación casera", manteniendo un poco de ese espíritu incluso en su versión final, lo hace aún más impresionante. "More than a feeling" es un excelente single, sin embargo, el resto del disco no deja de ser entretenido, definiendo un sonido específico e influenciando en el Rock-Pop americano. Escúchelo, es sumamente recomendable.

I've been trying to play 'more than a feeling' for decades and am nearly there (in my head, anyway). Never heard the rest of the album before. It's all feelgood rock, couple of standouts - 'Smokin' (b side of the single) 'Longtime' and 'Hitch a ride', but it's all good. Solid 4 stars.

The epitome of 70s rock. Nearly every song on this album has been played to death on classic rock radio. It’s well performed and produced but after 40+ years of hearing this, I can’t get excited for it. Not bad, I’m just tired of it.

Great drumming. Clever musicianship but deadly dull.

The sound is FANTASTIC. The guitars, the drums – there is so much to love about how these songs have been played and produced. It's excessive but that's the point. For me though the thing that holds this album back from being 5 stars is the songs themselves. If most of these songs were played by an acoustic singer-songwriter in a pub, I'm not sure I'd stick around. There just isn't a huge amount to them.

This album is one banger hit after another. I had this tape as a kid but forgot how loaded with hits it is. Such a solid band and a fun nostalgia listen.

I really loved this album! I didn't realize how many tracks I already knew. It was fabulous from front to back. The thing that got me the most was this album has one of the best starting tracks on any album. It's up there with Nirvana smells like teen Spirit as an opening track. 20 years ago. I would have thought this album was a cheesy and derivative classic rock album. Now I realize this album is where the mold probably came from. 2nd 5 star album thus far for me!

I would give this one 6 stars if I could. I feel like it was great and can also see how it influenced others. Also nice to see a debut album from a band land on this list.

Boston is a band that I was raised on, so they will always have a special place in my heart. This album is one of my go-tos when I need to be lifted into a better mood. It has a lot going for it in terms of instrumentation. Tom Scholz used a lot of custom-built equipment and was really ahead of the curve with his studio production techniques, making this album groundbreaking for its time. Even better, the album is very consistent all the way through, with good songs and a smooth, cohesive flow.

Was only familiar with More Than a Feeling, which I’ve never loved but it’s a good song for sure. I was more into this album than I thought I would be, Smokin’ and the intro to Foreplay are actually pretty great. I don’t see myself returning to this, it’s prog but hair metal prog which is kinda fun but I don’t need it in my life as a constant. 3 stars

This was good fun! More Than A Feeling is a strong opening track, really sets the mood and you roll on through from there. This sort of rock is far more my speed than The Strokes, for example.

I've definitely listened to this album before. Boston's never been my fave dad-rock band, but they are definitely one of the better ones. This is a very cohesive album, the band has a distinct sound but the songs do all sound the same after awhile.

Was a nice album to start the morning to. Knew some of the songs before but didn’t know the band or anything so it was a nice surprise haha. Also made me wanna jump into a car and go on a nice summer road trip. Gave me nice vibes.

Meh not the biggest fan except for that one song

Love this album although I've heard it many times it never gets old. Great guitar work, excellent lyrics and vocals, it really clicks for me. Also brings back memories of this guy I used to know Dallas who worked at a sheet metal shop with me, he was super cool and loved Boston. Whenever I mentioned any other band to him he would inevitably compare them to Boston.

This is a band who is almost a guilty pleasure. I’ve never been the biggest fan of 1970s rock. However Boston does this style really well and there wall of sound is endearing 4/5

More than a feeling and some other songs I don't recall.

Very cleanly produced and performed, but all the songs sound way too similar. The last song is the only one that ramps up the tempo past the unexciting mid tempo used on the rest of the album.

This might be the most over played album of all time. Every single track was on heavy rotation on the classic rock station. That being said, it's pretty crazy for one guy to make an album that's entirely hits. Yeah it's like kinda lame but really only because it's like permeated culture.

It solid and not too long. Could be a three but I'll give it a 4.

You don’t really need to listen to this album. If you’ve listened to any classic rock radio station you’ve heard all these songs before.

This is the album you hear when you go to your friends house and you hear their dad pounding beers and reliving the glory days…peak dad rock.

The first number is a banger after that it does not hit the same

A really good rock album. There is a really high level of polish that both helps and hurts the album. While it sounds spectacular, it looses a little bit of the real/rawness of rock and roll. Masterfully put together and recorded, fun to listen to, but just lacking a little in soul.

Encountering Boston's eponymous debut album is to encounter one of the many peaks of album-oriented radio rock that feels ubiquitous yet alien at the same time. For what was familiar to the ear may soon give way to something else that is surprising to the uninitiated, even if these sounds also become interwoven with the blaring tape decks out of car speakers. Overall, Boston (the band) found a niche on their first outing and that is not a small feat in and of itself. Favorites: More Than a Feeling, Piece of Mind, Foreplay/Long Time, Hitch a Ride, Let Me Take You Home Tonight.

What makes this album an album that I need to listen to before I die is beyond me. It is neither good nor bad. It was just popular at its time I guess.
