The Red Hot chili peppers best concert I’ve ever seen. Lotta stuff on this album. I like some of it not so much.
Brilliant album 8.6/10

Albumi #97, 02.11.2024 RHCP:n seitsemäs studioalbumi.
Loved this when it came out.
Again, dumb lyrics. But frusciante makes it so good.
Good
There was a RHCP album that came out in 2006, when I was in high school. I remember one of their hits coming on the radio, and as I was singing along, my dad turned to me and said, "How do you know this band? I listened to them in the '80s!" I think Californication from 1999 is RHCO's peak, but they've been making good music for decades. There aren't many things my baby boomer father and I, as a millennial, have in common. But they bridge the generations!
Ah yes, this album was the rootcause of my first existential crisis. SO many good albums and i wont be able to listen to all of them in lifetime
this is as good as it gets for the red hot chili peppers
Very good
“Have you ever paid money to hear music performed by California funk-rock band the Red Hot Chili Peppers?” “Yo, the Chilis? I saw them in concert like 50 times. I once got arrested trying to steal Flea’s bass guitar.” Hate all you want, but these dudes know how to make a hit. First half of the album is much stronger than the latter half. It definitely goes on longer than it should and the lyrics are occasionally (if not often) painfully braindead, but its tent pole tracks salvage it. 4/5 Highlights: Around the World Parallel Universe Scar Tissue Otherside
Starts off with some amazing songs (otherside in particular) but the second half is a bit hit and miss. Overall though, I think they have quite a recognisable and addictive sound on this album. And of course, top notch bass playing by flea.
Of course incredible album, majority of their best songs. Agree that quality towards the end goes somewhat downhill, maybe the drugs catching up…
Great album that hit me at the right moment. End of the album gets a little muddied but pretty stellar
Essential RHCP, not there best but probably the most popular. A Cali rock banger for sure
I love "Scar Tissue" and "Otherside" (yeah, basic, but they’re great!). The vibe of the band is exactly my kind of music, but as an album, it feels a bit repetitive (like the songs blend together). Everything sounds sort of familiar. The second half definitely picks up, but I wish there was more variety and maybe a clearer storyline overall. Nonetheless, 4 stars because it's still great
Listened to this on CD, as I thought I should have at least one Chili album in my collection, although I wasn't a big fan of their work. Wanted to give it another try, and wasn't disappointed. Brilliant listen.
No joke, this album generated the day I'm flying out to California for the first time. 1001 Albums knows too much... Anyway, what better way to prepare for a trip to Cali with LA's own Red Hot Chili Peppers! This is probably RHCP at their collective best. A bit front-loaded and nonsensical at times, massive hits such as "Scar Tissue", "Otherside", and the title track are instantly recognizable by many and helped shoot them back into the rock mainstream after a bit of a lull leading up at the time. But like I said, those hits are found within the first six tracks of the album. the second half is a bit hit or miss with some slower, more melodic tracks. Still one of the group's stronger works, though, and helped establish their more modern sound.
The RHCP album for people who don't like RHCP. One digs the mellow vibes and restrained playing throughout. They made a very wise decision not going any farther into rap-rock than they did.
Good one however overplayed.
Californication is a nineties combination of funk, rock, singles, and excess of compression. Cool track list, but at some point repetitive if you’re not into types of distortions, slapping, and an average singer. It was quite influential, though. I was one of those kids that bought the CD and listened the first half + road trippin non- stop
This is an album I've listened to a lot when I was in high school. I still enjoy it a lot. It's instant nostalgia and the lyrics are still very familiar. Best track for me isn't specifically the hit Californication but roadtripping
after blood sugar sex magick, i thought i wasn’t a fan of RHCP. turns out i just didn’t gel with that album, really loved this
3.75
Good album. Well produced. Great order. A couple of clunkers in the middle, Porcelain and Emit Remmus. I struggle with knowing if the RHCP suck, belong in their own corner of the sand box, or are really very good. My opinion changes daily. Today this album gets 4 stars. If it was a Dave Navarro album it would get zero. IMO... this is their last good album And it's not the best with the Fruschante/Smith addition.
I already liked a couple songs but ended up adding a bunch more to my likes. Couple of okay ones, the only song I really didn't like was the dirt one
RHCP at their best, perfect combination of skills, songwriting, and production value
Some great songs. Not the best songs from RHCP, but the overall quality is really good. No particular bad songs.
Dancin' around in their underwear. That is so degrading.
Porcelain is such a boring uninspired song and really detracts from the album. Fat dance is one of my favorites and cuntzilla always makes me laugh
ding dang dong dong ding dang dong dong ding dang One of my more embarrassing opinions is that I kinda dig this album. Bite me.
4.9
Used to listen to this so much growing up
Love RHCP and this album has a lot to offer! You can’t put this one on without immediately moving to the groove. Great record.
Great album. Some real bangers on it, and some more understated tracks.
RHCP has always been one of those bands that I have liked and appreciated, but not so much that I ever felt the need to extend a lot of effort to hear outside of their normal exposure ( which was a lot). Listening to this all the way through didn’t really do anything to change that. They have the landmark hits here which gives it the round up. 3.5/5
I had peeled away from listening to the RHCP after Mother’s Milk and Blood, Sugar, Sex Magik, but this album overall holds up upon return listen. I was a bigger fan of their earlier stuff including Uplift Mofo Party Plan, and while this effort expanded their sound into the more commercial rock feel, rating down solely on over saturation and length. There’s def 4-5 songs on here that are filler material and if it had been presented as a solid 10-11 tracks probably would’ve upped my rating. 3.75/4.
Not my fave band, but hard to argue that this album isn’t pretty stacked. This album got lots of play when it came out, and a handful of songs have lived on well past that. Where are these guys from again?
Makes me want to put a tube sock on my weiner and dance around. A most solid return of John Frusciante.
RHCP are one of those bands I typically skip when their songs come on. Not because they’re bad…probably more overexposure than anything. And this album is def one that got played over and over and over again (Californication…looking at you). That said, the quality of the musicians in this band is undeniable. The opening track rocks with all musicians on full display. Yes, the lyrics are pretty med, but the funk is real. Cut 3-4 songs from the album and we could be pushing for a 5*. 4/5
It's been a few years since I last listened to this one all the way through and I had forgotten how much I like its sound. Even though I'm not a huge Chili's fan, I can't really think of anything I don't like about this album. That said, it just doesn’t resonate with me enough to be a 10/10. The Vibe: Two friends are taking a road trip up the California coast.
Otherside, Easily, Road Trippin'
Maybe my parents were onto something with this one
What the fuck are these lyrics?! Favourite Songs: Scar Tissue, Otherside, Californication. Least Favourite Songs: Get On Top, I Like Dirt.
Great album, red hot chilli poppers
decent sound, very similar sound to prior albums, funk/rock.
A classic
This is a special album, not my go to usually but damn it holds a lot of classics
Very solid album. 3.5-4 stars for me :)
ooooooooookay maybe it's great
The album starts with a string of hits and then it just kind of loses steam. If the album had ended after 'Californication' or just a few tracks later this would have been a very strong album, but as it stands it instead just fades and I ended up losing interest a bit. The funk-rock mix works for me in general though Standouts Scar Tissue Otherside Get on Top Californication 4/5
Not a huge fan of RHCP but this was enjoyable
The first album I’ve heard from this band, still holds
Really liked this album! Have listened to it through before and was glad to revisit it again a few years later!
solid summer brahhh
Very good rock record! 4/5
Hadn’t listened to this in years, and it brings me back to good times
Great!
Too many danglers, close to 5* though
Transported back to the 90s - warm sunny times with great tunes
RHCP are such an interesting listen to me and this album is a microcosm of that experience. The hits are anthemic, timeless, and undeniable, and within an hour I’m really tired of hearing the band. My non-hit-song highlight from here would be “Road Trippin” as it’s a good break from the slappy funk-rock that starts to otherwise blend together as the album lengthens out
Not their best, but it's alright. Most songs are good, except when he tries to rap. Lyrics are very adolescent for a bunch of almost 40 year olds. He said fornication, huh huh. Favorite song: Parallel Universe. Not as good as Blood Sugar Sex Magic, which was ****. Not bad enough for ***.
Loved Red Hot Chilli Peppers and this album when I was a teenager. That love has diminished somewhat in recent years but you can’t deny that this is one of their best albums. Loved a whole bunch of songs here, pretty much everything from the first half, and didn’t care for others. It’s still pretty great however and more soulful than I remember.
La prima metà spacca davvero
l'unico motivo per cui non sono cinque stelle piene è la ripetitività di alcune canzoni che trovo molto simili l'una con l'altra, ma comunque spacca.
Otherside, Californication are my favorites from the album. A really nice introduction to RHCP and none of the tracks are annoying or boring.
the number of times they say I really might dream of californication. But lots of great tracks on here though. Road trippin was a good find.
Pretty good, some songs were very eh.
I enjoyed this one from the Chilis. The guitars sounded great. I liked the bass being so prominent.
I'm not the biggest Chili Peppers fan. I think BloodSugarSexMagic was amazing, but after that I think they're just fine. This album, though, has to be considered a classic. Although I've never listened to this album all the way through, it's one of those that you kind of *feel* like you've listened to the whole thing because there were so many major hits released. I'll give it 4 stars, well deserved.
pretty solid actually
This is a classic. I almost feels light hearted in its simplicity.
Lots of great songs
There are some tracks I really don't like, but the highs are enough to bring the average up
师弟推荐过,不戳
Pretty good album with a handful of classic songs.
Unbelievable first half of the album strong second half
Four too many songs. 11 would’ve been perfect. But I mean, RHCP a whole vibe, as the kids say.
4 stars
Definitely deserves to be on this list. I've got a couple of other RHCP albums and listen to them regularly.
Never listened to this all the way through before, very good
This was great. First time listening to a full RHCP album and I really enjoyed it.
This is an excellent album wow. Just hit after hit
Californication, around the world, and get on top are definite highlights. It’s a fun but pretty chaotic soundscape that often feels like it lacks direction. But for all that, it’s pretty good stuff
This is probably one of the best RHCP albums to listen to front to back. Typically there's a huge swing in quality from track to track on a RHCP release but there's less of that here. The album is still very front loaded, with some of their most iconic songs appearing one after the other, but there's still a lot of good material in the back half. "This Velvet Glove" and "Road Trippin'" were surprisingly good in particular. Overall, very good album. It's a classic for a reason (though I think By The Way is a little better).
the Red Hots are somehow both underrated and overrated.
If I can name 3 of the 4 members of a band it’s a good chance I like ‘em. And I can and I do. Album has a cool vibe to it and despite’s the obvious innuendos the lyrics work.
Banger! All de hits!
I got into t this album more than expected. Will definitely revisit some of these songs
Some brilliant tunes but album spoilt by being too much filler
Really enjoyed this. Liked it before but seemed to enjoy it even more now.
Nothing can adequately explain what makes music so personal. Often it gets tied symbolically to something- a time, a film, a live concert, an event- and that’s what explains it. Mostly it just connects. In this case for me it was the soundtrack for one of the worst drives in the country, the most expensive highway in the continental US and a near 6 hours of absolutely nothing to see. No beautiful views. No impressive feats of human engineering. Just road and average roadside. For hour after hour. The Pennsylvania Turnpike really is a long haul. To this day Californication immediately brings me back to that day in 1999 where a 5 1/2 hour drive took me almost 10. If you asked me what the PA Turnpike Sounds like - it sounds like this record. Mostly medium tempo. Flashes of excitement mixed mostly with daydreaming and nearly nodding off. Thematically similar to my life at the time I was growing up fast. More mature than what came before with this tinge of excitement for what would be the next stage of my life while nostalgically wishing not to lose the past. And by the way this album flows a lot like the drive- starting off energetic and ending with a whimper. I learned some very important lessons that trip. You sometimes have no control. Plans don’t always work out. Know yourself and ask for what you want. Take what you can get. One of those lessons happened on the way across state. A huge tractor trailer overturned West of Harrisburg- on a stretch with no exits for tens of miles. We were stuck. Like put it in park and get out if the car stuck. People were initially fuming and then this strange camaraderie took hold. I was sitting in the hood of my car playing guitar (trying to figure out Scar Tissue). Families with kids were picnicking. These two bikers, an “old” couple (probably my age now) were walking up and down the aisles of cars ‘dancing’ for all the little kids and laughing. We were there for quite literally hours with nowhere to go. Some dude ended up walking down the median with a wheel behind cooler handing out bottled water and drinks. The couple in the pickup next to me (I still remember her name was Candy, don’t remember his, and she did NOT like like a Candy- more like a Martha) joked about unpacking their grill and cooking dinner for our “block”. Eventually things started to happen and I never saw the Bikers or Candy ever again. And yet whenever Parallel Universe comes on or I hear Scar Tissue I vividly remember looking up at the clouds playing guitar like I was all alone. Peaceful, unafraid. Unencumbered. Sometimes when you realize you’re stuck and you just accept it things just seem to work out. I absolutely loved this album in 1999. The same year I almost saw them at Woodstock ‘99 (my friend Ron and I woke Sunday morning in Rome NY and decided that we were about to be inside some semblance of a riot so we split) Hearing it now it takes me back. And the feeling I get is this terrible boredom of driving, a sense of unease. And memories of my impromptu friendships that afternoon. “With the birds I share this lonely view”. It’s a really good record that for a very very long time I would occasionally put on and listen to. Porcelain is one of my favorites. But… the Peppers have always been outside of my wheelhouse. They’re just one tiny bit from great in my opinion- but the closest they’ve ever come for me was in 1999 when I drove to Pittsburgh from Philly to see the woman I loved. This one gets a 4 for actual musical impact and a 5 for nostalgia so since we can’t go halvsies…..
Really good album. I think my biggest negatives are that it can sound fairly similar at times, is probably a little longer than it needs to be, and it front loads the best songs at the start. Ultimately those aren't that bad, just the things that kept this album from a 5. With that said, it's an easy to listen to album that throws the listener right in with Around the World. The first 6 songs are the best part of the album and the back end starts to listen more like filler but is still good music. Definitely one that will get play going forward, atleast songs from it will.
It's always funny when the frontman is by far the worst part of the band. Flea and frusciante really push every song with their skill and Smith really locks in with flea to hold down the rythym. Keidis' lyrics are pretty nonsensical a lot of the time, but to his credit, when it works it works. When it doesn't it comes off as rather cringey. He also is not a great singer. However, this album features plentiful hits and highlights their ability as a band to write a great album, and demonstrate how the sum can be greater than it's parts.
These guys sure know how to make music huh? 4/5
Classic Chillies.
I'd call myself a RHCP fan, but I've never actually listened to a whole album. This was awesome. I never realized how varied their music was - rock, hip hop, ballads. It was a whole experience and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I listened to the album twice.
Wasn’t sure where I was going to end up on this album. I’ve never owned it or actively played it, but I know every song from extreme overotation on the radio of the singles at the time. More so because it was one of 2-3 albums on constant repeat (the Fuggees/Lauren Hill might have been another 🙄) in a coffe shop in Sydney I was working in around the time it came out. So basically I was very fed up of it. However, a break is clearly a good thing in this case. I expected to still dislike it, but actually it’s hard to deny that it’s super catchy, not a bad song on there and just a really strong album. And yeah, I was singing along a bit. Bit of an unexpected turn up.
Much to my shock, really enjoyed this. Kind of written them of years ago but very strong start, more than just slappy base and cocks in socks. Parallel Universe is a awesome song. Tails of a little towards the end but still a pleasant surprise.
While I don’t love the album. I can certainly see the appeal. It’s rock, with a twist. It is very funky. There are also some great, catchy songs. I could see them live and I’m sure it would be a great concert.
Chill rock. Fan of the energy.
Probably my favourite of the RHCP catalog. I'm not sure how well some of the goofier songs hold up. But some of the more brooding, emotional songs, still rip. Also great musicianship from most of the band. The best RHCP will get.
Flea. That is all. Liked songs added: - Around the World - Scar Tissue - Otherside
Liked it more than I thought I would. Love Road Trippin’
One of my all time favorites
Great album, fills my heart with nostalgia. Had a few 'meh' moments keeping it from 5 stars
Very good, I like this.
the highs are really high and the rest are good to maybe mid songs! the album could be a bit shorter but overall an great red hot album. 4.5/5.0
Love this album and group.
This is not the Uplift Mofo Party Peppers or even Sir Psycho Sexy Peppers, this is a darker and more stadium anthem Chili Peppers. I personally was introduced to the Chili Peppers via Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Over the last 40+ years (!!), the Chili Peppers have been new to each generation and I'm sure for many this was their RHCP entry point being it was their most commercially successful album. I know the hits from this one prior to this listening (Scar Tissue, Otherside, Californication). I did enjoy the other tracks that I'm not familiar with such as Around the World and Parallel Universe. This album is a bit front loaded but did end with Road Trippin' which I really liked.
Classic, Always good. Still pedo singer
The first part of this album is really good. Amazing actually. They do a great job of building within their songs and there is a nice tension. The last part just didn't have the same impact to me. It felt flat.
Some good stuff. Can't deny the hits.
I agree that this album should be on the list. I remember singing Under the Bridge with my high school buddies. This is a case where I dislike Anthony Kiedis, so 1/5. +1 for Chad Smith and +2 for Flea.
I listened to this quite a bit back in the day. It was good - had some of the frenetic funk RHCP were known for mixed in with a few radio hits and a new melodic approach. "Scar Tissue" was everywhere for a while. It's a good album, definitely one of the band's greatest, but probably not a 'must hear'. Takes me back though. 4.0
It’s such a solid album on the front end but could have been cut down to a 10-12 song album
Jazzy 4 at least. a very listenable bop.
I was ready to dislike this but it's quite good. The Chili Peppers meant the most to me in the late 80s and early 90s and I know they hit a dull patch in the early 90s. But on Californication they got Frusciante back and they got their groove back. This feels like the Chili Peppers at their peak, writing dirty but emotional songs about California.
Adole vibes
great album. forgot how many hits it had. RHCB are not my favorite band, but this is definitely their best album.
i have such mixed feelings on RHCP. they put out a lot of real stinkers but a few diamonds in the rough, and this album stays true to form. unfortunately the diamonds all pretty much hit back-to-back out of the gate (except get on top, more like get outta here, am I right???). of course, that means the remaining two-thirds of the album is the musical equivalent of wading waist-deep through lukewarm porridge. there's just nothing going on of any interest or value between tracks 7 and 14. it at least ends on a decent track with road trippin' but that song kind of reiterates just how stupid the lyrics and themes have been the whole time. this is like a 3.5 but the bangers are iconic, especially the title track, so I'll be generous this time. don't make me regret my show of good faith, RHCP. favorites: around the world, parallel universe, scar tissue, otherside, californication, road trippin
I think I’ll never be a rhcp guy but this seems like as good as they could get
Great album, a bit long winded but the last track is great. 4
4.0 about 5 songs too long
it’s all about california for some reason xdd
I love this album but ooh ohh the mixing.
Around The World Parallel Universe Scar Tissue Otherside Californication Porcelain Right On Time Road Trippin'
Funky.
7 / 10 un clásico de los 90 con alguna canción de 10.
awesome album. kicking off with Around the World, to just absolutely punch you in the teeth before we get into some heavy rocking with parallel universe and some really beautiful melodies on Scar Tissue and Otherside. The album then really sticks into its powerful rock sound, which was a pretty stark departure from One Hot Minute (previous album with DAve Navarro). i think this rock sound is what really really solidified them as such a force in the mid 2000's. that said, i will always prefer the RHCP's funkier stuff. my favorite songs on this album are going to be Around the World, Right on Time, Purple Stain, and I Like Dirt. those are the most fun, in my opinion, and really give Frusciante/Flea/Chad their chances to shine. great album, but as far as the Peppers go, I don't think this is in the top 3 for me... sorry to ruin the streak of all 5's in this group, but this is going to be a four for me. give me the funk.
A bit different than I expected, but it grew on me.. I'll probably listen again.
Some great songs, less rapping than in Blood Sugar (thank god). I think the hooks were really nice
8.5/10
Great
The first song reminds me of the OG Mario Brothers TV Show. The second reminds me of Evil by Interpol at times. Do you guys think these guys like California? Certain parts of Purple Stain remind me of Stayin' Alive.
Great album with some truly integral and game changing rock songs. However, there are definitely some clear duds on the track list so it can’t get a 5 from me
The quintessential post grunge alt rock album. Flea is one of the best of all time
I ended up singing along with alot more than I thought thus it's getting a 4, however I like dirt and purple stain are a real blemish on that album
5 songs off this album are on the RHCP greatest hits collection. 4 of them are within the first 6 songs. Talk about a strong start and a very front loaded album. I like to think that they recorded these songs in order. By the time they got to "Californication" they were on top of the world thinking they could do no wrong. Just keep writing songs because it's hit after hit. Then they started to quickly run out of steam and wrote songs about liking dirt. If they cut out five songs from the back half of this album (Emit Remmus, I Like Dirt, Savior, Purple Stain, and Right On Time), it would be perfect for me! The lackluster finish brings this down to a 4 though.
the gator rocks in less than 60 seconds
Really love the singles/first half but the back-end is less interesting
Hard to review this like the other albums as I'm already so familiar with it, mostly through hearing other people play it. I can feel the teenage angst of not wanting to like this as I wanted to be out there finding interesting music that not everyone liked, but there is some great pop music on here. Then you listen a bit closer, its like they're trying to say something but the message is lost in also desperately wanting to make commercially successful music. It has all this energy saying "This is Californication, commercialism is rampant and has a knock on effect that has a huge cost to society" but also "catchy choruses are great, be sure to come back for the deluxe edition". And then, like a shifting tide, it becomes like an album full of b sides.
Maybe the most 90s record ever.
This album is solid. First half is really good and although the second half is weaker, it still has some great tracks. Would recommend and would probably listen to again.
they really seemed to lean into the rock over funk aspects of their songs on this one but some of their best tracks are on here. This band has tended to be a "Greatest Hits" band for me usually. They're sound is undeniably iconic and their best songs, on this album especially (scar tissue, californication, parallel universe and otherside) all have great staying power. However, at times the riffing/funkiness/vocals can be grating. That being said, the deeper cuts (around the world, i like dirt, porcelain) were cooler than I expected. Emit Remmus, Get on Top and Road Trippin are tracks that I didn't think work very well for me. Definitely worth a listen regardless and maybe my favorite full album experience from them.
The album is really fun, cohesive, while also being hugely varied and efficient. The only reason I haven't put 5 stars, is because it was my bestie's favorite band, and she's such a bitch...
Surprisingly good. The singles I was already familiar with, but there were some nice album tracks in there as well. The album tracks did fall off in the second half though.
Very good album. Starts very strong but overstays it's welcome just a bit
16 year old me would've given this a 5
To cool for school
Gaar.
The last good Chilis album!
Maybe because I have been listening to it on repeat it’s grown on me slowly
Really solid album overall. Lots of recognizable hits and I enjoyed listening to most of the songs. Some of the songs towards the end were a miss, but the album was a good listen nonetheless.
They do a good job of having a full sound with only a few instruments. Also they do have an original sound, even if it gets bland quickly.
This album is literally what introduced back to the Chili Peppers back in 2022 and it such a great introduction. The energy and passion from everyone shows and it shows how much love they have for making songs and it also made me inspired to pick up guitar because these songs gave me that energy that they had as well to write songs. Although since listening to more of their work I personally like Blood Sugar Sex Magik more, this is still a great album that people should still hear.
The hot streak continues with Californication. Initially i didn't think too much of it but as i kept listening, it really began to grow on me. The guitar work was great for what it was, as was the singing and the other instruments. The songs also held a good pace so i didn't really get bored listening to them. It is one great album that i can see why many people do love it. Best Song: Parallel Universe Worst Song: I Like Dirt (Side note: I also love the video for Californication, it had that really cool video game aesthetic)
back to form with Frusciante after One Hot Minute was disappointing. This album has a little bit of everything from their usual punk/funk to pop songs.
Love it or hate it, this is a pure distilation of Red Hot Chili Peppers...pure capsaicin.
A more mature album than usual from the Peppers. Some bangers and more reflective tunes
Absolutely love this album - such a unique band and some banging tunes. Whenever I’ve tried to sing like Anthony Kiedis, I sound more like Vic Reeves, club singer!!
Listened to the album on Friday and it announced the weekend with ooompf
Has some really good moments, but also kinda dies towards the end. Everything between “Emit Remus” and “Road Trippin” feels superfluous. But the rest of the album is great.
Easily eats
Classic peppers goed album
I have always considered this album to by favourite 🌶 album. Im not a huge fan of them though. To me, Anthony Keidis is a huge part of what RHCP is. Especially with how they sound, considering how his voice is so recognizable and strictly RHCP. That being said, I think he is the worst part about RHCP. Often times, his additions to the songs are the most annoying parts. His lyrics are very hit and miss. I enjoy the funk elements but I think if they could strip it down a bit, they'd write better songs. I'm happy that they're still writing music. Even if their new stuff is sub par. Anyways, this record is pretty damn good. Some nuances from Keidis leaves me thinking it's only a 4/5. I honestly don't think I can give them a perfect 5. Even though they have many 5/5 songs. But each album, including this one, there is a garbage song that should've just be scrapped.
this was a fun one
Really good, the camper rock sound it's really fresh. The summer atmosphere given to some songs really match the concept and aesthetic of the project as a whole, specially the title track Favorite song: Parallel Universe But I also like: Around The World Scar Tissue Otherside Californication Easily Emit Remmus This Velvet Glove Road Trippin'
good
The first half of the album is unreal and second half wasn’t bad but doesn’t maintain the level of the first half. I liked this one more than Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Rating: 4.5
Pierwsza połowa pełna singli. O dziwo nie wszystkie z nich to Californication. Druga część już mniej charakterystyczna. Bardzo poprawne, jednak bezpieczne. 4/5
Sometimes not so heavy
I don't dislike the Chillis. The title track on this album is my favourite mainly, I think, because its a traditional rock track. but they put funk into rock music and, as a hybrid, are a suceess.
It starts off so well then it just drags in the latter half so hard.
Revisiting Californication was a great way to dig up some 90s nostalgia. It was one of the first really musically complex albums I listened to and it mostly holds up to what I remember. It does tend to lag in the back half starting to sound a lot samey but ends on a nice note.
I've yet to sample the entire RHCP ouvere, but for the time being, hot damn, this is my favorite album of theirs. Even when I do get around to sampling the rest of them, I doubt any of them will have just that right mix for me of their typical funk jams, alt rock doodlings and Kledis's weird-ass lyrics about sex, California or both. And they **are** weird lyrics, believe you me—let's not even touch those lines at the front of "Purple Stain". Big ol' bonus for me, too, that I can't hear any of the loudness war stuff I hear people talk about, so I don't got any points for that. I'm still docking for it's **length** of course, and that's the closest reason I can articulate why this is a 4 instead of a 5 (and even then that's not really an issue for me here), but at least I've never heard what clipping sounds like. Oh, and those lines at the top of "Purple Stain". Those dock points, too.
Despite its' issues with the loudness clipping and it having the Long CD Album problem of the 90s, this is still peak RHCP.
I mean, they really blew their load in the first 7 tracks here, huh? This is a fantastic album that goes on just a little too long for its own good; those first 7 tracks could stand up with any 7-track stretch on any album like this, and I'll stand by that. The energy and the luster of the sound really started to fade away by Tracks 9 and 10, and it felt especially bad by Tracks 13 and 14 where it just felt like they were rehashing stuff from earlier in the album. Road Trippin’ is a great closer, but I think that stretch of Tracks 9-14 where the energy starts to fade and the album simply loses its steam is gonna drop this down to a 4 for me. It’s a 4.5 that I just can’t bring myself to round up all the way; it could hit a 5 if one or two of those tracks in the back half of the album click for me better, but it’s a really strong album that’s worth listening to regardless. Think of it this way; it’s a 9/10 for me.
First 6 tracks are bona fide classics, and I love the deluxe track Quixoticelixer. Rest is just alright, but when you have Scar Tissue and Otherside back to back (the latter being one of my all time favorite songs), you can't go below 4 stars.
Really great rock album. Closer to 4 than 5 and closer to 4 than 3.
60/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
The best album the club has turned up thus far.
Love the first half of this album, then I feel it runs out of steam. Still a lot to like.
I was excited to get this album because I have such fond memories of listening to these songs back when it released (many of which I still hear quite frequently). For the first half of the album, I was not disappointed. So many huge hits on here- "Scar Tissue", "Otherside", and "Californication" are obvious highlights. Easy 5/5. But then the second half just kind of drags, you start to notice the poor mix quality (I'm listening to it now on with a much better sound setup than when I was jamming out to it in college), and there's no memorable songs to be had. Drags the whole experience down, but I still have to give it a 4/5 for the bangers on the front end along with the nostalgia kick.
Eigenlijk 9/10 maar naar beneden afgerond dan maar :/
An interesting stylistic turn for the band and this album is the best of this augmented sound.
One of the Albums I identify with good Alternative Rock.
Ah, I knew there had to be a 90’s band that was good. Finally, this one RHCP for the win!
Really wish they mixed this better, sounds like rocks on a decent set up. Classic songs though great rock. 3.5
I don‘t like their Music as much as I liked to like it. But here most of the songs go different ways than just being this juvenile crossover funk rock. My personal/biografical bias brings some extra point to the table.
The album is an absolute classic. It's got some truly great songs on there.
I'm not a huge RHCP fan, but this is my favourite of their albums. Like most albums since the advent of CDs, it is too long. The quality clearly drops off over the last few tracks, but there are enough good ones in the first half to make this a great album.
Is funky, it was a very fresh sound when it was first released (yup I’m old). That said, within itself the songs start to feel a bit repetitive. So not quite a 5 but a good listen!
4-
Great album and one of my favourites of that time.
A little long. Good singles. Used to be my favorite if theirs.
- many hits.. idc what people say i enjoy some rhcp
Amazing album. Great change in style by the band. While it contains great hits and a strong start, it tends to fizzle out by the end.
Not as good as Stadium Arcadium but probably their second best album.
Until now, I have not listened to a full RHCP album. I am surprised at how good it was.
Not much to say, Californication is just good.
I originally got into RHCP at around 15 years old, I think around the time 'Freaky Styley' was out and stopped following them as closely after 'Mother's Milk'. I sort of outgrew them at that. Actually listening to this album, I found it endearing - maybe from a feeling of nostalgia. The band is really talented and despite some hamfisted bits of being funky and Anthony Keidis' lack of vocal and lyrical virtuosity, I enjoyed listening to this album and have a new appreciation for their later works.
🌶️
Cara A 5 estrellas
Enjoyed it overall, even if none of the deep dives added to what I liked about them. I could listen again.
Better than I remember
3-6-2024 I've always had a reluctance to listen to the Chili Peppers--probably because of the sock thing. Throughout the years, I have been presented with evidence that they're a talented group of musicians (especially Flea), heard bands I like compared with them, and found myself enjoying some before I knew who was performing. The amount of these tracks that I'm familiar with without deliberately seeking this content it has to say something about it's quality, doesn't it?
Lastig, wel topper maar sommigen in de 2e helft zijn wat minder. Sterke 4,5
I have always liked The Red Hot Chili Peppers and am kind of proud of them for still being around and putting out good stuff. I was, in fact, surprised when this album came out and it was to such a high level, as many of the bands from back in the day kinda settle on "Ok" or stop producing at all. Definititely should be on a "listen to this" list for most people interested in any genre really, as it has elements of lots of different stuff and never gets out of control.
The very definition of RHCP. This is what I think of when I imagine RHCP. Lots of classics in there. Great album.
This band has some creepy creepy guys in it but this album was good, I can see why it’s so famous
So the first time through I thought "I remembered this album being better than that." Not sure how I missed it because on listen #2 I didn't get to a single so-so song until song 8 - Porcelain. The first half of the album is full of 4 massive singles - Around the World (my favorite, such energy), Scar Tissue (cool lyrics and beat), Otherside (lots of depth and dexterity to this song), and Californication (did I mention depth? they tone down the tempo and up the edginess especially lyrically) - and 3 other very good lesser knowns. Parallel Universe and Get on Top bring such bumping guitar and bass work, even if the lyrics slide back a bit to more juvenile versions of the Chilis, and Easily is less spastic but still a great beat. All I can say is these guys are way better with John Frusciante - he is such a great guitarist and songwriter. But let's think about the second half of the album. Emit Remmus is ok but I Like Dirt, and later Purple Stain, bring the tempo back, thanks to Flea's bass (and not Anthony Kiedis' lyrics). Right on Time is also up-temp but not as good. The rest of the songs get a little broodier, with Frusciante going into some different places. I'm not sure I love it all but I do love Road Trippin, which was their last single. It's a very good album, but not perfect. A great comeback for the Chilis and Frusciante but I can't give it a 5. A very solid 4 though.
I went through a period where I dismissed the Chili Peppers. It seemed after Mother's Milk and Blood Sugar Sex Magik that they just seemed to be making the same albums. I've come to accept that even if they aren't going to really take risks with their sound they do have the ability to write entertaining and engaging albums. Californication is one of those albums. It packs a punch right from the start and keeps the listener's attention throughout the whole album. The first four tracks and the title track are my favorites but even the slower, odder tracks like "Porcelain" are good. I am motivated to go check out some of their music after this release if I ever get a break from this countdown.
I realized that I've never listened to the full album. There are several songs I really love and some that are a tad lackluster. All in all it's a solid album.
Probably a good album but I'm really sick of them so hard to listen.
This is not my favorite RHCP album, but I really did love it when it was released. I haven't spent much time with it in a while so I was curious how a revisit would be. I noticed a lot of criticism for Anthony's shit lyrics, but that's not really what he's about. Anthony Kiedis is another instrument in the band, a mouth harp perhaps. 😉 The first four songs are still classic and I loved every moment. Get On Top is a poor attempt to bring the old funk back. But the next two... Californication and Easily are awesome. The second half of the album is not so stellar. There's a bunch of interesting moments, but the songs feel incomplete, until we get to the end... Right On Time is reminiscent of the old days and Road Trippin is a great reflection of the Chili Peppers' soft side.
7/10. Some familiarity / nostalgia with songs on the album (toward the beginning) may cause biases in this rating. Had highs and lows. Enjoyed the instrumental (guitar) throughout, lyrically and other pieces were hit and miss for me but I’d say more hit than miss.
Gü Side A and B are faultless Side C and D slightly bring it down on the whole 4/5
A really well put together album which is something chilli peppers generally struggle to do. A certain ginger man has it tattooed on his arm so that certifies it’s CLASSIC status. 4/5
A classic indie-rock/rock album that brings its listeners to the sunny coast of California with the album's unique sounds. Listeners transports one to a universe solely to the late '90s and early 2000s.
Great songs, crude lyrics at times were a bit of a turn off. Super talented musicians.
Great Album. Hard and soft. A tad too hectic at times
Forever a defining record of my youth. Really top heavy with the hits which remain the stars of the album, the latter half feels a bit more eccentric. Love this album and the summery feelings it evokes. Associations with hitchhiking in Maui and SUP rider playing this on the ride to the beach.
Honestly not think RHCP had a good album in them. The hits are hits for a reason but some of the deep cuts could have easily been singles. Anthony K. is back in my good graces.
This album would've benefited from being 8-10 tracks. There are a few songs that just don't carry any weight. I hadn't listened to this through in a long while, and my middle school self is a little disappointed with my current view of the album. Probably should be a 3, but 4 for nostalgia.
The album’s pretty toploaded, but the later material isn’t bad at all. The Chili Peppers were always hot shit. Kiedis’ rapping takes a back seat for most of the album, and his lyrics have taken a big step up from BSSM, focusing on more self reflective themes, as well as engaging in a certain amount of politics with the excellent title track. The streamlining also helps, the album comes in at less than an hour, which is a good manageable time, and there isn’t nearly as much filler
probably the only RHCP album I've listened to all the way through on my own and without skipping a track
I enjoyed this album more than I expected. Just clean, simple fun.
Very good, also very long. Fatigued around 45 minutes, but Very Good.
I recall when this came out, despite some great singles, I was a bit disappointed with it compared to BSSM. However, on listening to them both again now this is the more complete album AND the best tracks surpass the best tracks of BSSM.
Bangers and filler
I’ve never sat down and listened to this one, but turns out I’ve heard a lot of it anyway. You know…it was pretty good. The band played well together and did some cool arrangements. I think all the hits are 4 star songs. The rest was good, but not at that level. Although, not enough to drag it down.
I have strong nostalgia for this album so that definitely helps, but listening to it year later it still feels like one of the stronger ones in their discography. Favorite track: Scar tissue
memories... listened to it very often. didn't age perfectly well, but well enough
Don't get the hate. A great vibe, caliFOURnication 😁
I always think of Out R Inn when I hear this album. And how I wrote something like, 2000 BIATCH on the bathroom wall and it stayed there for like 20 years
LOL, first track came on and I was like "this is 25 years old?! Fuck I'm old." I feel like the RHCP get a lot of hate but they're fucking good. Like really talented musicians making unique and interesting music for over 3 decades. I don't get the hate. Funny thing is, I never listen to them except when they come on the radio. Which, speaking of, this album is chalk full of radio hits.
Damn, what an album. So many great songs and enjoyable from start to finish. My only complaint is that the album is a bit front loaded with hits. The second half of the album starts to blend together a bit. 8.25/10 (4.125/5)
Memes aside, an incredible album
I listened to this album a lot when I was in my first year of Uni in 2001. I remember on a Saturday night most people in my halls went out, but I didn't fancy it so stayed in and was playing my bass along really loudly to this album because I thought everyone was out and I wouldn't be disturbing anyone. I was on the first floor of our halls building and most of the female students were upstairs, directly above us. A really beautiful fellow student from upstairs came down and knocked on my door whilst I was playing, I opened the door and saw this beautiful female student from upstairs and instantly thought "wow she is going to tell me how much she was impressed with my bass playing and that I am really cool!" (I was very delusional at this point of my life) but of course she told me to shut the fuck up because she was trying to take a nap. Anyway, it was good to reminisce about that time in my life, this album has some great songs on it. Only had to skip a few, but probably skipped them in 2001 too if they weren't bass riff heavy.
The Chili Peppers at the absolute apex of their sound. Interested to see how they deal with Californication being in the first third of the album. To me, every Chili Peppers album after Blood Sugar Sex Magik sounds played out, but they still have great singles.
I would say this is a great album with really great songs. A lot for everyone and the best songs are amazing. I just don't think there is any flow between songs
Listened to a few years ago, good album.
Took me back to my early 20s, a fantastic album, maybe a couple of tracks too long but some amazing tracks, not listened to it for a while but really enjoyed it
Not a huge Chili Peppers fan but the first four songs are great. I give this album 3.5 stars and Flea is a pretty awesome bass player soo....
A lot of classics here, and RHCP’s fun and funky vibe is pretty infectious. Solid grooves all around. And fun fact I didn’t realize until now: this album that’s largely about California was also released right after my first trip to California with slashing lumpkins!
This album introduced me to RHCP
listened to again still don't love the band, but this album is pretty good tho
un classique porcelain emit remmus I like dirt
Really this is a perfect album but their style and sound just makes me feel a little on edge.
Paras RHCP-levy!
Classic album, so many great songs and the ones that aren't great are still pretty good. 9/10
One of my top 90s album, great vibes Top tracks: Scar Tissue, Otherside, Californication, Road Trippin’
A really good album, they showed off a maturity here (by RHCP standards) in their playing and writing. I could listen to this over and over.
Hell fucking yeah, enfin quelque chose que j'aime pour vrai. Excellent album, pleins de tounes connues, c'était cool. B-side un peu faible par contre.
This is the very first album I listened to when first when dipping my feet into music. Obviously I’m going to be a little bias however saying this. This album is still incredible. Chad flea and John Frusciante always play amazingly together. Anthony’s voice can be very hit or miss depending on the songs tone but overall I say he did a good enough job to not weigh the album down heavily. The music is funk rock. I just love how the instruments sound. Favourite songs are probably Scar tissue other side or Californication. As the lyrics have a lot of meaning when you listen to them. For the music I’d give it an 8.5/10
I have always found with this album that it is so top heavy with 5 of their great songs within the first 6. Otherside is one of my top songs of all time. Then it unfortunately drops off big time in my opinion with really I unforgettable songs for me. I like Dirt is always funny but not necessarily a great song. Even though I have listened to this album a few times, I remembered why it's not on my repeating RHCP albums.
Frusciante returns to save the RHCPs.
gutes album, komische leute
3.5/5
Half super catchy, the other half acceptable. Some real gems in here.
Very nice returning to this. I used to be a big fan of their early stuff, but I drifted away after Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magic.
Better than I remember. John f could burn a place down with that guitar
Some annoying songs drag down an otherwise brilliant album
The first half was really good. Second half I began to drift off and lost my focus on it.
I think these guys are from California.
Listen I get it - these guys do white boy rap funk soul rock better than anyone. At their best they're visionary genre blenders with incredible hooks and driving bass lines that get you moving whether you like it or not. But the goofy ding dong ding dang nonsense really pulls me out if the vibe. The album has some absolute bangers but it's too long, with a few songs feeling like derivative reductions of their other hits. That said you can't deny their groovy, goofy genius and this album is their apex.
The album has a good unique sound to it, and the bass is super funky
It is OK
While the previous RCHP project did not please me and did not lead me to understand the hype behind this band, this album opened my eyes. Apart from the tracks we all know, the bottom line in this long play is at a really notable height. My perception of the peppers has improved. Expected Marc rating: 3
A millennial favorite
Never realized how many singles were from this album. Pretty great!
Haven't listened to this one in years. And, since my musical acumen is based purely on emotional reactions, I love it. RHCP bring such a chill energy, yet can still get me hyped up. Definitely need to get them back in my regular circulation.
most of these songs are the reason i got into alt rock. some incredibly catchy tunes, and might be rhcp's best.
This album was influential for me growing up. I can sing along with most songs. I’m now realizing i have no idea what he is saying sometimes, but it’s so easy to sing a long.
Loved it. Couple down songs but mostly music I enjoyed
The distillation of the '90s in the USA.
I have repeated instances in my memories of early childhood of thinking the exact thought: "The Red Hot Chili Peppers are uncool but I like their music." I don't know where I was hearing that they were uncool, and I don't know which songs of theirs I was hearing- I just had those two strong emotions toward them. Now that I've heard a full album of theirs, the sentiment hasn't changed. I like every song on this album, although it really is just as loud as everyone said. Favorites: Around the World, Parallel Universe, Californication, Porcelain, I Like Dirt
Cool dudes
I never quite got into the Chili Peppers but I feel like if I'd listened to this album when it came out, I'd have liked it a lot. It is definitely really, really good. I don't think it's going into my regular rotation, though.
Funky
Really a great Album :-)
Good Album, hits are the hits. Anthony’s raps are a little strange for me but his hooks are always elite. Song where he sings are great.
Very silly lyrics but pretty catchy.
Such a recognizable sound this group is. I’ve heard a lot of these songs so many times and I’ve never really been a fan. Doesn’t mean I don’t like it, it just isn’t my type of music. I did like the album a lot. I just feel these songs are overplayed. 8/10
It's a 4.5 for me
always difficult to be objective about older albums that you know really well. Sounds great though
Meines Erachtens ein Klassiker.
Never once in my life I have I opened any kind of music streaming app/ record collection / car CD holder and played the RHCP. It's not that I don't like them, or that I think there music is bad. I enjoy every atetisy that makes up this band. In fact, some of them (flee for the Mars Volta) have helped create some of my favorite albums by other bands. Frusciante proves himself time and time again and Chad delivers just as often. And still, I don't love it. I love every aspect about every one of the band members, and that includes Anthony but when he lays dkwn his... Signature.. "funky"... Lyrical delivery I just can't seem to follow. My heart says that this album is both a 4/5 star rating (it falls off towards the final tracks) and a 2 beacuse I would never think to recommend it to anyone and I'm not sure that fair. I'll give it 4 for the good times( the music specifically on tracks like parallel universe and get on top. but deep down I guess they just don't do anything for me.
Some of the best melodic guitar in the business, but it's diluted by their hip-hop 2000s vibe stuff
I'm willing to be the basic bitch who likes the Red Hot Chili Peppers (even though that means I'm risking going to hell according to "The Good Place"). This album definitely has some filler, and I'm sure it benefits from the fact that I was immature when it came out, but I still like a bunch of the songs on here.
4.4 - love rhcp. I think people can be a bit pretentious about them and also some people don’t like them which is also fine.
4.1/5 Lots of big hitters on this one. A little bit bloated but I actually really enjoyed the back end of the album. Could be a 5 for me simply by subtracting a few tracks.
RHCP best album. Plays al.ost like a greatest hits album for me. It's not too funky but funky enough. 4
