Reviews (page 6 of 8)
Love the soothing feel of JMJ. Have not listened to this one for years and years. Brings back great memories. I prefer the group "tangerine dream" which has a similar sound.
3.5
Kind of trippy electronica that I liked but probably don't need to hear too often. Nice to discover though!
Nice, this is like the French answer to Mike Oldfield.
Better than I would’ve thought
Not the kind of music I usually listen to but I liked it. Interesting and captivating sounds. 3.5/5
Pretty awesome soundscapes. Definitely someone I imagine Daft Punk would be inspired by. Interesting to think about how he did this with the limited technology of the time. Each part flowed into the next smoothly!
Pretty smooth and relaxing. Really enjoyed!
its good but not great, it sounds ahead of its time but dated nowadays
I listened to less than 10 min of this at home and it wasn't doing much for me but I had to drive to Ajax tonight so I tried again in the car. I used the YouTube link which I later learned was a remastered extended version. Something about the car stereo and being in an enclosed space made it quite enjoyable. This music is made for headphones. The only parallels I can draw are that some of the extended mix sounded like laser fire on that ancient video game called Galaxia and the last half of Pt 5 sounds like the music played on 1970s porn. What's not to like?
Enjoyed it
Interesting, I would not have paid for it.
I imagine this electronics being influential and big at the time, but it was fine background music
Not my kind of thing, but can hear its influence in loads of stuff. Instrumentals with only electronic sounds get very repetitive very fast.
Boy, this album keeps going, doesn't it. I'm ordinarily a fan of early MOOG synthesizer stuff like this, but this album is so slow, it's hard to do anything with it but put in on in the background and ignore it. It works fine for that purpose, but it contrasts pretty sharply with, for instance, Plantasia by Mort Garson, which was released the same year and felt like it had much more of a concept to it. I can see why this album is highly regarded in the history of electronic music, but I don't think it holds up without its historical context 3/5
This is not the type of album I usually like, but it kept me well entertained the whole time. I like the overall vibe
futuristic for its time but a bit too ambient and somewhat lacking drive
Wiiiiwooooooowaaaaa
Ethereal synthesizer for over an hour
Sadly didn’t get to hear it all. It was new and different at the time and good to hear again. ***
Part BBC Radiophonic Workshop/Doctor Who/sci-fi soundtrack, part Kraftwerk, part prog, part Pink Floyd’s ‘Shine On You Crazy Diamond’ and part Patrick Cowley/disco. Sure, parts of ‘Oxygene’ are a bit derivative, but equally, other parts are startlingly iconic and original. It sounds simultaneously dated and futuristic, but that’s part of its overall charm.
Cool for an electronic album made in the '70s, just not really my thing.
Well as in "they walked so the predecesors could fly" I understand the inclusion of this album on the list. the best in electronic music was yet to come in 77.
It's very vibey. I think the album is a lot like laying in the middle of the ocean; it's peaceful and serene, but there's a sense of uncertainty and anxiety underneath. As for listening through it, it was alright, but the longer songs tend to drag on a bit. Favorite track: Part 4
It was cool, but I don't really care for it. It's not something I'm going to come back to, but it's pretty cool to hear early electronic music. Highlights: 2, and 4.
Whilst admirable for its innovation, it feels a little like a museum piece now. A bit dusty.
Perfectly fine ambient music. Added to my study playlist
An intriguing journey into historical electronica. Chill grooves
I feel like I’d enjoy whatever non-existent sci-fi movie this album would soundtrack more than the actual album, but it’s pretty aight.
Evocative synth instrumentals in the vein of Vangelis. I enjoyed.
It's not something that I'd ever listen to again but I still kind of enjoyed it as an imaginary sci-fi soundtrack. Best track: Oxygène (Part V)
Really enjoyed and hard to believe it’s almost 50 years old. Would def revisit
I typically don't love electronic music, but I think that's more on the EDM side - this reminded me a lot of Brian Eno, which I liked a good bit. Cool sci-fi vibes and good studying/working music
Interesting
I enjoyed this. Decent piece of music.
De origine van elektronische muziek. Niet zo verkeerd. Goed om geluisterd te hebben
Entrancing. I wonder how much this type of music is created for direct listening or background listening
Without this album there probably wouldn't have been the stone-cold-classic "Bing Bong" by SFA
Basically 40 mins of the Hartbeat gallery music, which isn't an entirely bad thing. Oxygene Pt. 4 is the 'magician on TV doing something mystical or a spy being spooky' music. Exactly what I imagined a JMJ album would be.
3.3 - Probably a good example of early instrumental ambient scifi synth. Some solid and timeless sounds - probably impressive for 1976 but nothing special in 2021.
Great synth/ambient/space tunes. Fimilar with him but not this album.
Very atmospheric, predictably. A pleasant listen. Super influential, from what I've read.
cosmic sound
This was fascinating and I can see how it lead to modern day electronic music.
I feel like I might derive more from this with repeated listening a and closer attention but as it went it stayed pretty well background, pleasant enough but making faint impression.
It's not the most remarkable album until you consider that it's early electronic music from the 70s when it was hard to do a bunch of that stuff. Latter tracks in the album were better. Interesting how many modern electronic musicians still come back to those great early synth sounds.
Reminds me very much of Vangelis' music. Had to listen to "Fields of Coral" by Vangelis in the middle of this. I think since its release, there have been better version of synth instrumental albums that I've discovered before this so it's going to be an unremarkable album in my opinion.
Blim. Blim blam.
Cool sounding album. The sound effects were probably before its time. I feel like movies have used these songs in there sound track.
Different, meh
It's electronica with a melody, which is a minor miracle. I almost gave it a higher score because it exceeded my expectations by not completely sucking. You can tell it's from the 70s because of the lasers and other space noises. Best track: Oxygène IV
It reminds me of a soundtrack to a space video game. Soothing to listen to and the sounds were very rich. Not really the type of music I like listening to but I enjoyed the experience.
not my kind of electronic music
buena música de ambiente, pero no más que eso. son todas iguales ademas loco basta 3/10
One of the very first CDs I bought but now a bit ho hum
This is intense for the ambient genre while sober. Imagine showing this to the Beatles
I've never heard of Jean-Michel Jarre or this album, so this is all new to me. It's described as electronic music, which it definitely is, but it's not the dance electronic music that you think of. I had the Brian Eno album a few days ago that basically created the genre of ambient music. This is a step up from ambient music as far as pace goes, but very similar. This particular album has a very outer space kind of vibe to it. Like other albums in this genre, I just don't know it well enough to say whether it's good or not. For me personally, fine as background music but nothing I would listen to regularly.
Music was relaxing but boring
Kinda Stranger Things vibes at certain points. It would’ve been better if he stayed with the spooky electronica throughout the entire album.
Mostly inoffensive as background noise, but it never grabbed me. Fairly boring, to be honest. 2.2
Alien abduction crap. My personal favourite was oxygene number 3, or was it number 4. At least it was short
It reminded me of donkey Kong a little
#963. 39 minutes of various noises. 2/5: meh
Lounge techno
Classic aber auf albumlänge ohne Pandas Anlage Lampe
Not an everyday kind of album. Sounds like Bladerunner and apocalypse now.
Evokes the 1980s educational laserdiscs that we watched in public school in the 90s. Felt cheesy then, still feels cheesy now!
Let’s stick to actual music
Я не знаю що написати про цей альбом. Напевне, в свій час це був дуже впливовий альбом в своїй ніші футуристичного прогресивного ембіенту. Але зараз, мені особисто, це слухати просто нудно. Оцінка: середня-висока 4
Thoughts before listening: I don't know. Maybe some sort of new agey techno thing or something. Or maybe new agey jazzy thing. Or maybe a new agey techno jazzy thing. Review: Replace jazzy with ambient and I nailed this. This sounds like a sci fi movie score or maybe some sort of RPG video game background music. Its synthy and ominous and dramatic, and not really my thing. I especially don't like the ambient parts, but whenever they pick up the pace a bit with more a of a driving beat my ear perk up a little bit. I typically get bored quick as nothing happens, but its at least something. I can't totally hate on something like this just cause its not in my wheelhouse (I get annoyed at all the 1-star reviews dismissing country and punk albums on principle alone), but the best I can give it is 2-stars.
This is not for me.
This should have been some sort of movie soundtrack. Nothing too exciting here, I preferred Kraftwerk.
Blind album and artist. I really dont think i was in the mood for this but I tried to listen to it with an open mind. 2.
Interesting and atmospheric, but not something I would probably listen to again.
This was likely pioneering at the time but it sounds dated and I can’t help but categorize it as ‘keyboard sounds’. Some pretty good sounds near the back half. I would have thought it was sampled frequently in hip hop but nothing I recognized.
I kept waiting for the song to begin. Then I realized it's just background music. It's not something you actively listen to. You do other shit while it's on and it just fills the room with what I imagine a computer getting high sounds like.
Day 264 IV is excellent and the last one is ok but the others all felt like intros to songs that never got started. Highlight Oxygene IV
Hmm…ok. Maybe not quite in the mood for this one. Great as a sci-fi soundtrack while reading a pulpy comic book or sci-fi novel. Or just chilling and spacing out. Pioneering, especially now knowing this was made in the 70’s. Will revisit in the right moment.
No es mi estilo
Meh.
I just don't get it.
not my thing but i respect where this was coming from in 1976 and it's importance in electronic music history
Vor 50 Jahre innovativ. Heute bewegt es nicht mehr die Welt.
Not interested in electronic noise, thank you.
Feels like I’m in a movie or a video game. Don’t love it, but I don’t hate it as much as I thought I would. Makes me confused sometimes
I really only cared about 1 song. Giggled at them using a theremin on the first song though
not for me :(
Mais non, merci
Honestly gave me a bit of a headache.
Bon.
This must have been impressive at the time and still is now. Still a 2/5 only because I don’t listen to music without vocals.
Pretty basic electronic music. I can only assume this got popular because it's old and was probably ahead of its time.
Decent album but slightly annoying at times. 2.5/5
I'm sure this guy is very talented, however I did expect something more. The album just felt like a whole load of nothing - like a huge buildup for something that never comes.
I’m not a fan of this style of music. It’s well made and laid the groundwork for other musicians to come. Just not my thing.
Kjedelig
This has 80s future technology TV show theme music vibes all over it! ... and then _Oxygène (Part IV)_ came one and I recognised that it had indeed been used on some 80s future technology TV show. Not _Tomorrow's World_ as I initially assumed, but one called _Where There’s Life_, which I don't remember anything of.... except the theme tune! I'm not a big fan of ambient music, it's generally not what I listen to music for so whilst this will happily sit in the background whilst I work, it's just not something I'm interested in or going to get excited about
Kind of interesting, probably very ahead of its time. Just not for me.
So my first impression of this album was that it was a mildly underwhelming electronic album that leans alittle to the ambient/vibe side of electronica. But then I noticed what year this album came out (1976!) and that totally blew me away. Like how is this album able to be SO far ahead of its time?! It’s really really impressive to say the least. Most, if not all, current electronic musical artists would be genuinely ecstatic if their work came out sounding like this. But unfortunately I can’t just review this album on whether or not it was ahead of its time (cause if I was this would legitimately get a 5/5) I also have to review the music for my own personal taste, and this was crazy dry. It had its moments, I saved a song (pt.4) and enjoyed myself. But I’d never come back to this album outside of owning it for solid background noise. But for a list of music you HAVE to hear before you die, I’d say this albums inclusion is debatable/controversial to say the least.
Boring electronic
Pleasant background music. I thought it sounded like it could be a video game soundtrack and the artist made multiple soundtracks before this album. It is somewhat repetitive and kinda boring, but I am sure it was revolutionary at the time.
I like synth and I think Jean Mikchel Jarre is a talented guy, but after the 1st song I was bored. This is not my taste. It's background music.
Ambient ahh
I did not listen all the way through on this. Maybe if I was stoned at a planetarium show this would have hit - but alas I wasn’t.
Kind of eye rolled after track one. Halfway through part 2 I started to get in the zone of it. Then it got old quick. It's cool music in the right environment. 2/5
Fine enough background music, but not sure why it makes this list.
For this most part, this faded into the background when I worked. But when I did notice it, it was annoying.
I don’t really get the addition of ambient music on this list, but this was somewhat enjoyable. Sonically it’s very beautiful but there aren’t really any situations in which I can see myself saying “Throw on that one Jean-Michael Jarre album. The ambient music one.” The only scenario I could see myself listening to this is when i’m reading and need background music. With other forms of ambient music, I can at least say I can see this for a yoga class or for mediation. Not with this one though.
Decent for an all synth album, but there’s a very low ceiling for this type of album.
I won't insult this. It's very... of its era. And, for the mid-70s, this must've sounded incredible. But. Not a huge hit for me. I see how it probably influenced the hell out of Daft Punk. I appreciate it for being a stepping stone, but I can't see returning to this one. 4/10
helt ålreit. må høre nøyere gjennom en annen gang.
Oxygene pt3 should be on 1001 singles to listen to, but the album can be missed. The second half of Oxygene pt5 is a banger though. Should have been split into 2 tracks
I only thought the 2nd half of track 5 was any good.
The obsession with instrumental albums KILLS ME
some french guy had a vision and good for him for seeing it through but I just don't see where he's going with this
Not really my bag - it builds and builds but never goes anywhere
Another album that is probably more important than enjoyable for me. Passed me by without much thought (other than remembering that joke about Zsa Zsa Gabor and Jean Michel Jarre marrying)
Cool for its time. Not really worth mine.
Today was an uncharacteristically foggy day in my city, so listening to this while driving to work felt like transcending dimensions. Apart from that experience, which wasn’t bad, I feel like this album is only meant to be listened to in very specific situations, and for normal life it’s kind of boring and WAY too boom shoom wao wao fiu fiu.
How did this sell so much?
Good background music
Ambient, instrumental. Feels like I'm in space. Seems to come to life midway through track 2. Track 5 is fairly upbeat - Why does one of the melodies remind me of Donna Summer's 'I Feel Love'? Each track blends into one - kinda good to work to though once I've had a coffee
2 enjoyable tunes ..4 n 6. the rest nothing special.
alien sounds, innovative aber nicht for me, hat zu lange gedauert, bis es vorbei war
Not really interesting
I'd like to give Oxygène its flowers for its importance in the lineage of ambient music. Jean-Michel Jarre is a pioneer, etc, and influenced artists I blah blah blah. But this album did nothing for me.
Heard about it somewhere before. Idk not really my style
30/1089 2.3882* Never heard of this dude or the music but he's a pretty big deal in Europe, circa 1970s. This music is something from a post apocalyptic/dystopian film from the 70s. Maybe a perfect atmospheric soundtrack for Charlton Heston's finest performance as The Omega Man. Good representation of the synth rock to follow in the 80s and mellow but I didn't catch many hooks or very interesting melodies. Hits...Oxygene
Equal parts very annoying, quite stupid and very pointless. The famous one rescues it a little, and it's almost relaxing at times. But mostly it's pretty poor fare. I guess I just don't see its relevance in here.
Positives: I used to like driving around in GTA IV listening to the station that had Oxygène 4 and Philip Glass on it. Negatives: It becomes repetitive very quickly and lacks the variety and sense of place that other early pioneers such as Kraftwerk provided.
I can see the influence this might have had on subsequent electronic music and for that I need to give it something, but it is a little bit shit, like a programme portraying the future that has aged poorly. It was likely very futuristic for its time but with hindsight, doesn’t have a great deal of the charm of some of its peers. I’m not averse to the synths per se but the percussion on it is washed out and isn’t as driving as something like kraftwerk. I’m glad to have listened to it, but not sure I’d want to revisit it.
Yay. More electronic music. That’s what I want for Christmas - no electronic music.
I understand the cultural/historic significance But unless I’m trying to have Lofi electronic music to work to or make a pretty boring sci-fi movie. I don’t understand why you would re-listen to this.
Couldn't get through the first song...
There's elements of this I really like but needed far more variation. I really don't like this era of electronic music being all the same song but in different parts.
castlevania soundtrack music
2.5, I think I wish all of it was a little bit More
Not sure about this album.
Sounds great for 1976, but I'm in 2025
French electronica. Boof. Listen. I don't like this. This is not for me. But I feel I must give credit where credit is due. Could I make something like this? Not even just technically, but musically? No. In fact, I wouldn't even know where to start. And that's in today's world, with today's resources -- not in fucking 1976. So while I am tempted to flip the ole' bird to mister Jean-Michel Jarre, unfortunately it's just not that simple. Also, parts 4 and 5 did kind of bang. Still 2 stars.
Wasn't my vibe today
1.5 stars There’s no reason I should be listening to this outside of watch a B-movie about aliens, being high out of my mind, or both. I’m sure it’s revolutionary but I’ll never listen to this front to back again.
2.5
Kind of weird.
2.5
Made me want to fall asleep sitting up at my computer trying to work, every hard to get through such a short album. It was like elevated hold music, faded into the background easily. Would be great music for a video game, not for my personal enjoyment.
experimental type music, instrumental, pre industrial, pre electronica
How boring can an album get
40 minutes of ambient sleep noises. Why?
Kraftwerk meets classical but pseudo!!
Probably great when it came out, sounds very dated now. And overplayed as tv backing music.
Eigentlich ein Stern, aber ich kann die elektronische Pionierarbeit wertschätzen.
I appreciate that this is a pivotal piece of early electronic music that helped revolutionize the use of synthesizers in popular music and I can appreciate the ambient atmosphere of this album, but if I'm being honest, it just feels a bit dated and boring. It's not bad, it's just not something I can see myself returning to in the future.
Kind of boring, not my favourite
Very believable that this guy worked on soundtracks before this. This just sounds like the background ambience to some low-poly 3D Indie video game.
Not my type of music but I'm sure it's pretty good in its own style
В принципе понято. Есть знакомые нотки. На этом остановимся.
Spacey music that sounds like it is a soundtrack to some B sci-fi movie. It sounds very dated.
This largely passed me by. It's not that the synths weren't nice, but they weren't especially ear catching or memorable... With the exception of oxygene part 4 which I knew from being the tomorrow's world theme and in my head I had attributed to kraftwerk. Part 4 aside it was largely forgettable, but I guess it wasn't unpleasant either.
It ok
Asi spis na doma na podkres
cool soundscapes, brah
I can understand the significance of this record - but it's something I would never listen to again - and had a hard time getting through the first time.
I’m not all that impressed. It’s fine but nothing outstanding, although for some reason I’ve heard pt. 4 so many times before. It must have been on a Synthesizer Greatest compilation
Must have been mildly mindblowing at the time, if you were in awe of what synthesizers could do. In hindsight, it just sounds like 40 minutes of incidental music created for an educational programme about mathematics.
I suppose I can see how this might have blown people's minds in the 70's, very futuristic and Sci-Fi. Didn't blow me away though. 2 Stars.
All sounded the same to me
Parts 4 and 6 were ok, but overall not very good.
The top review on this site states that “everyone over 35 knows” who this artist is and knows at least one song off this album: “pt. 4, obviously.” What circles do you guys run in? Never heard of this before, never need to hear it again.
Early electronic ambient. I’m a fan of this genre but didn’t love the high pitch bubbling. The rest is nice, but not something I could tolerate in regular rotation.
Heard this was a banger on the way to Saturn.
i'm aboard an alien spaceship and i don't know how to feel. all i know is that i wasn't a huge fan of this album.
Great for space movies, not so much for casual listening.
Jean has a real flare for song titles, even Kraftwork (previous record and massive influence on this one) had more creativity than this! Like been held on virgins customer service line......
electronica....can't believe this is actually a subset of music....
I honestly thought it was all one song.
Я розумію впливовість і все таке, але оці ретро-синти в мене викликають якусь неприємну ностальгію, тому на жаль ні, я не люблю Жана-Мішеля Жарра.
meh
Ambient music is not my jam. Imaginative and creative use of samples
Alright.
Ganz nett.
ambient electronica pick: oxygene pt 4
Interesting and soothing. Electronics is not my jam, though.
Vähän liian vähän tarttumapintaa tässä. Osittain ihan kivan kuulosta.
The journey begins with an astronaut cruising through an intricately woven nebula. They blast their ship out of the cosmos and hone in on a distant planet in the view port. The ship drifts down through the planet's thick, billowing atmosphere of dense clouds. It touches down on a sparsely vegetated beach along an ever expanding dark ocean. The astronaut tests the air and sees that it is suitable for breathing though with higher levels of methane and CO2. Equipped with a small boat pod, the astronaut ventures out into the ocean, speeding along shoreline with the sound of seagulls echoing around. They end up at a cove with a small private beach. They park the boat and swim to shore but as they approach the sand, something seems off. There is something not right about this cove. They notice dead fish and birds strewn about the shore. Their skin starts to burn and a red rash is forming. They quickly swim back to the boat and leave the cove. Jetting along the shoreline they look for a spot to rest as night is approaching. They ride for hours, beginning to feel very sleepy and just when they are about to doze off...a loud crash is heard. They spring awake and drive towards the crashing noise. They come to a large metal barrier with the rising sea level crashing against it...trying to break in. The astronaut climbs out of the boat and up a rocky outcrop next to the barrier. As they near the top, the sun begins to rise. When they break the peak, the sun is fully out and reveals a landscape covered with oil refineries and heavy industry pumping smog and smoke into the air. Fires burning coal and tires, metal smelters showering sparks and toxic fumes. The astronaut drops to their knees and realizes that they have landed back on Earth many years later. The planet is now in a runaway greenhouse affect. With tears in their eyes, our astronaut pans over to an oiled covered seagull standing on an Exxon-Mobil sign...keowing sadly. I like this for the early electronica paving. It's slow but well done. Needs more beats though. 2.12 stars for the electro-Frenchy adventure.
Yeah this is just a dude messing around on a keyboard. The keyboard salesperson probably put this on to demo and make a sale.
This album sounds like standing in line for space mountain. Like if you mixed that with old school original Metroid. 2/5
Детка ты любишь рваные джинсы
I mean it was fine. Spacey and outer-worldly? I like ambient music but there was nothing crazy special. Maybe it was first of its time! Idk.
Pretentious
Personally, it didn’t leave much of an impression beyond Part IV, which was okay. I remember someone in the family owning the single. The rest of the album felt ambient to the point of forgettable. What stuck with me more was the cover art that hinted at a drama the music never quite delivered.
I felt like I was at a massage parlor with the Stranger Things soundtrack playing in the background.
Better than some other ambient European electronic albums we have had…but that’s a low bar for me
That was pretty calming annnnnd I can’t think of a single other thing to say about it.
Cool concept but not for me. 4.1/10
Very chill. Wish there was a little more going on.
Halloween/video game space music. Songs were not very distinguishable from each other, overall kinda of blah.
Wasn’t too into it, but the pew pew noises in Pt. 2 were cool
Ondanks de beroemde hit, geen blijver voor mij. Het synthesizert beetje door van oor tot zonder spanning. Toen vernieuwend, nu gedateerd.
This did not do it for me at all, which is surprising because I like a lot of the stuff that he has most likely influenced. It bored me, there was nothing to grab on to. I can see why he used to have dramatic effects while performing
Good soundtrack for an alien invasion or smthn
Música para el espacio
2 - 35 minutes of cool songs but not a whole lot else going on
I tried. It’s not terrible. Just don’t care for it.
At times, a worse Blade Runner score. At others, a worse Mega Man score. That my comparisons all came out a decade after, speaks to its innovation. But innovation only counts for so much.
qu se yo, ambiental. me dio paja
It's fine but the albums ended and my streaming switched to "autoplay similar stuff" mode and I completely didn't notice for three songs. 2.5 for generic pretty beep boop music
2+ Stars (6/15)
I think he might have been the first person to own a synth
And the award for most unexpected "oh wait I actually know this song, it's a bop" goes to...
This album sounded like music that would be in Logan's Run 10+ years after Logan's Run. Just sounded way after it's time, which was weird. Plus, it's an instrumental, a techno instrumental but an instrumental none the less. I wanted to give this album a 1 but it's at least more unique than that.
Quite repetitive and boring.
too experimental
Some decent composition and I’m sure this was ahead of it’s time, but I just can’t get out of my head how this sounds like the outdated synths from A Clockwork Orange.
2,5
Not my thing
Not for me.
Was this even good in 1976? Snooze.
I was fairly bored. Not much here for me
Very ambient. Interesting soundscapes that all flow like one long track. Pt 6 sounds like being in a boat during a storm. Not sure I would go back to this one but I’m glad I listened. Favorite part was part 2.
I'm not high, nor am I playing with an electronic organ at a mall music store wearing polyester pants and a leisure shirt, and therefore, this album is not where I am at.
outer space music (not complimentary)
I would get down to this in an elevator. Or if I wanted to fall asleep while driving perhaps. Almost got me with pt. 6 though.
Instrumentaalimusisointi voi olla mainiota, mutta harvoin sitä tulee kuunneltua. Tätäkään en tule toiste mitä todennäköisimmin kuuntelemaan.
It's definitely sound
Fun to hear some vintage synth work, but ambient is not really my thing.
Really nothing special. Not a 1, cause that is just for the vile crap, but nothing beyond. 1.5/5
Liked it more than I thought I would. Just about.
So far in this listening experience, there's been a surprising number of albums I was subjected to by my parents. So they were apparently more culturally aware than I ever realised. I knew J-M J turning up was only a matter of time. 6 tracks and 39 minutes long! Unacceptable. The first track's primary reason to exist is to have a new age lady play it during relaxation sessions. I actually recognised track 2, so my childhood attempts to make this fade into the background clearly failed. The space lazer "pew-pew" noises were clearly enough to be memorable. Track 4 is what pops into my head automatically when anyone mentions J-M J, which happens rarely these days. Just not a genre, and therefore an album, I enjoy listening to much, although I can understand why others might. 2/5
1,2,3,4,5,6 blah blah blah. I know I could learn to understand or appreciate this genre of music more but I can't and I won't. I don't get it, and I was easily bored. I don't despise this- I can see why people would like it, but it is not something I will ever listen to again.
Kraftwerk på den kedelige måde. Alt for lange synthflader uden meget bas eller andet til at skabe rytme.
More video game music!
2--
Not quite as bad as some of the other electronic albums on this list, but still isn’t my thing. Borderline too boring. 2/5 won’t listen again
Varför?
Booooooriiiiinggggggg. More lofi beats to chill/study to.
Sounds like the mediocre soundtrack to an equally mediocre indie metroidvania
Music to listen to while floating in a sensory-deprivation tank. Otherwise, I can’t find anything essential about this album. Synthesizer technology was not developed enough in 1976 to do anything really amazing yet.
Oxygène (Part IV)
That was a waste of time.
My first thought listening to this was “This is so simple, I bet I could make this” which might sound cocky, but there isn’t anything too complex or profound in the album. That said, Jarre making this in the 70s makes it much more impressive - we now live in a world where electronic music is more accessible than ever for both music makers and consumers, so while it may be pretty simple compared to modern techno/house music, it’s pretty awesome for something so early in the genre. Still, if I rate this purely based on how it sounds… it really is a bunch of random laser sounds put over some soothing chords and keyboard melodies.
Except the well known "Oxygene Part IV" it's just pretty good background-music for me. 2,5
I don't enjoy ambient music, but this one at least had some structure to grasp onto and sounded nice enough, even if I was still kind of bored
If there is a romance movie out there somewhere between two robots, this could be the soundtrack. And I’m skipping that movie.
This kind of album isn't really for me. I find them boring. It's fine, but at best this is background music.
This is the music that would play in every sci-fi movie from the 50s when an alien named Gleep-Glorp shows up.
Ok, but a bit boring
Ah, neat. I guess....all the blips, bleeps and bloops are fancy. A great album for when I'm visiting a planetarium which is somewhere between rare and never. I would love to see Police Academy's Michael Winslow perform this live!
Nah ✌
Space and ocean sounds?
Sounds like a movie soundtrack. 2.5
If i was high this would probably go crazy.
Come on man... just a waste of time. Heard one electronica album from the 70s you heard them all. 3/10.
Electronic music
2/5
Listened years ago and enjoyed then (3.5 then) but hasn’t held up to the test of time.
I wish I was the type of person who could enjoy ambient, but I’m just not.
Electronic noise / forgettable music
ganz nett aber i kann persönlich nit viel damit anfangen
Not as bad as you would think
I don't really understand why most background stuff like this makes it on here, and I don't know how to rate it. Felt like I was in an 80s fantasy video game
2.5 stars. Early electronic music. Decent background music but mostly boring except for "Oxygene, Pt. 4".
You know I’m gonna be unhinged with this one :( This man has the world record for largest crowd at a concert ever for these lowkey goofy beats. Bro played synth and put alien laser beam notes over it like Ross in that episode of friends. Like this guy had the first synth ever that had those sound effects built in and went stupid with it. Part 6 got an animal crossing ahh beat. I’m just so unsure how to feel about this one. This is similar to MJ Cole like I’m sure it was groundbreaking but just idk.
synth bore
This album was pretty good as a background play list. Smooth and melodic.
Didn’t do it for me.
Why would he do this? Who wanted this? What was the purpose? Where was it supposed to get good? When am I supposed to listen to this? How did it have six songs over forty minutes, yet all felt like it was one five minute song? Is that a good quality? Do I want this to be better or do I want it to have never been made at all? Which would be better? Production was great, though. 2/5
As a student and DJ back then, there was an affinity for the new and divergent. It's not holding up as well for me as I would have anticipated. Have I been spoiled by what this has inspired? Think so. I keep expecting it to take off, by which I mean find a groove and exploit it. Still has some moments, though. Best when percussive like in Pt. 5.
I would like this music if I was at a spa, but I am not at a spa
Not my kind of music at all, pretty scarce and repetitive but that's the point. I am surprised by it's age though and I can imagine this being incredibly influential. I think it's at a 2.5 for me where I didn't dislike it but I also wouldn't really listen to it again. Makes me wish I gave that kings of leon album a one though because these two records should not be in the same category.
A strange journey into the mind.
Moody and spacey and atmospheric. But am I going to listen to an entire album of this? No
I assume this is what the future sounded like in 1976
Okay background music but not very interesting. It was probably great for the time but now that electronic music has progressed so much it seems boring. 3/10
My favourite French electronica album of all time
This album is just a single song of classic ambient sounds (i.e. space lasers). I get why some people might like it, but I don’t particularly.
I mean I guess it’s technically good for just electronic synth noises? This kinda music makes me think of that Friends episode where Ross thinks he’s this amazing artist at playing the electric keyboard.
It kinda reminded me of the PlayStation introduction song. Kewl and fun to be on the list, but I don’t feel as if it’s particularly groundbreaking. Something fun to have in the background when you’re exploring space.
Part one reminded me of the Stranger Things theme song a little bit. It was chill, probably gonna play it in my classroom during independent work. Who knows what teenagers will think. Dope album art.
I want to wait until sundown, smoke a fat J, get into my buddies old Lexus SUV, turn off all of the interior lights, and "spaceship" across the country while listening to this album.
Might be a good meditation album, except for the lasers.
I can appreciate that the soundscape is incredible. However there is nothing else to this so it rather becomes background music Part 4 remembers to bring a melody and is consequently the only memorable bit
I mean... Sure? Part 4 was recognisable to me and the rest was broadly nice ambience but I didn't feel like it's what I'd ever go for in a record. Judging by the age, this was a gamechanger, but it didn't connect to me today! Not offensive in the slightest though
You're watching Adventure Call! My name is Falconhoof, and I will be your guide on your quest!
Cool album cover
Whenever I get albums like this, stuff I deem "ambience music", I think about in what context would listening to this make sense. Because while it's not unpleasant, I don't think I'd ever just play this to listen to casually. It reminds me the soundtrack to an indie game I played called Cult of the Lamb. In which, the music was very fitting. I think in a similar vein, a movie/show/game soundtrack context is appropriate. I can also see the argument for this as study music although it's not quite rhythmic enough to tick that box for me. Overall it was interesting but I probably won't ever listen to it again.
Boring, cheesy, ambient synth music. The first track had a bit that sounded suspiciously like Steve Miller's Fly Like an Eagle, which came out a few months earlier. This album may have been ahead of its time in 1976, I don't know. Maybe it influenced some people (John Carpenter?), but it doesn't do much for me in 2024.
I'm sure this is influential and I'm glad I know about it, but definitely not for me.
Meh. I didn't hate it and made it through.
Listening to this is like being stuck on Space Mountain, in the dark, right before the ride is about to actually start. The music (effectively) sets a tone, and gets you ready for *something*, anything, to happen, but it never does.
God help me they're all called the same thing and first track is 8 minutes long. What is this list trying to accomplish exactly? Shouldn't this be a list of 1001 undeniable albums, all of them at least rated a 4 overall? Like, you guys - Kid Rock is on this list. Kid. Rock. We knew after that it wasn't going to get better. I mean, major props to the cover art, here. But this will be a miracle if I like this album. I'm just saying, if this album gets a pass but John Carpenter's Lost Themes isn't on this list, then what's going on?
Was probably revolutionary for the time but it's dull to me. Reminds me of The Wall in a weird way.
steikta shit
Sure this may have been an inspiration for future electronic artists, and an excellent blueprint for scores. But it also may be Obsolète
What the hell was this album!? Felt like I was being abducted.
Not horrible but not at all liking this
