Medicore.
A great little album for the end of the 20th century. 3.5 stars.
Ok aber zu nichtssagend. ***
I liked it more than I thought it would. This album is like a poppier Deftones or a sober 311. The turntable stuff didn't age well -- not that anyone would think that it could.
Three big nostalgia bombs. Although I didn't realize how much those three singles sound alike. The rest of the album didn't really add much for me.
La voix me fait tellement cringe, je sais même pas pourquoi. C’est plate, l’instru était quand même bon
Pleasant but unremarkable
Heard the odd track off this, but never listened in full. It didn't particularly bowl me over, but the occasional good track, such as Drive 3/5
This was alright. Didn’t grasp me
why did i kind of like this lol
I love this album but I don't think it's necessarily good. 3/5.
It’s not actually that great, but it was important to me when it came out as a 17-year-old
I liked it. Some of it was a bit generic but I enjoyed quite a bit of it. Its listed as "Metal" but I wouldn't describe it as such. It was somewhat grunge maybe. 2.6
perfectly alright, i liked the quiet moments, like the start of stellar.
This is an ok rock and metal album with some hip hop and electronic elements. Nothing too fancy, but enjoyable.
3/5. Uneven album. Their hits are great, but the album slogs at multiple points.
I was never a big fan of Incubus. The vocals don't really appeal. But they rock pretty hard and it's a bit of a time capsule of 90s alternative radio rock that has some appeal
Singles are a nostalgia trip. Also, was not expecting "Battlestar Scralatchtica" lol. Of the era I guess.
Great to return to but whether or not I’d return again… not so sure. Aside from Drive, which is still a beautiful song, the album doesn’t do much for me. Pardon me is a banger.
Kröftug hljómsveit sem ég ætti að hlusta meira á en hef bara látið útvarpshlustun nægja hingað til. Þau verða reyndar smá endurtekningarglöð, þ.e. lögin eru mjög eins en ekkert leiðinlegt þannig. Ég býst ekki við að ég muni setja þetta oft á fóninn þannig að þetta lendir í miðjumoði.
It's not bad, but it's also nothing spectacular
It's alright. I like the bounciness. Vocals have that childhood depression vibe for me (kinda like all the music my mom used to listen to).
idk I guess i like the track sequencing
Incubus were always a softer part of the nu metal subgenre but also a bit more complex. Maybe more alternative rock. The album shows that. While the turntables often feel pointless there is more going on with the rhythm section as you'd expect. Brandon Boyd is ok as a singer but not too interesting for such a long run time. All in all, it's ok but nothing that should've made this list.
Reminds me of the sort of music I was more into as a teenager. I guess my tastes have evolved over time, but still enjoyable and a bit nostalgic
Some experimental melodies.
This is a transitional album from their more energetic bouncy side to the mellower pop rock they made after this record. I liked it a lot when it was new. With today's ears, it's too polished and the singer's voice is a little boring. Favorite song: pardon me.
Never really listened to this band before, and now that I did, most of the time I felt like I was listening to a Faith No More-, Soundgarden- or System of a Down- cover band. This is future me, with the editing option, and I will bump this album up from the 2* I gave it, to a 3* as it isn’t that bad... Not a big fan as I can't get over the feeling that they are trying too hard to be good or different.
boring ass rock. nothing exactly wrong with it but i dont the vocals or songwriting much at all. very low 6/10
Nu metal with such a coarse punk rock influence. Experimentations in rythmn and soundscapes all combine to make a really unique 1990's staple. Incubus never disappoints. I can see the arguement that this is a sellout album, and that nu-metal was not good in the first place so what makes progressive nu-metal any better. All i can say to that Incubus takes their work very seriously. Anything that seems off color or unintentional probably came from production opinions.
I've listened to this one before. I actually prefer Incubus album S.C.I.E.N.C.E. over this one. With "Make Yourself" they departed from the The Faith no more style and made it more commercial.
Really solid, angsty
Better than I remembered it being. 3/5
not nearly as bad as I thought it would be - did like them a bit growing up
Nostalgic for me but not that great. They should have stayed zany.
1999 was a great year for music so not sure how I missed this one. I had only heard Drive before which is a pretty good song.
I LOVED this album when it came out and I’ve even seen Incubus in concert a couple times. But the angsty lyrics now feel a bit… heavy-handed? “Pardon Me” is a great song when you’re young, angsty, and desperate to be taken seriously. But the lyrics (and really the whole vibe of the album) just hit differently at this mid-40’s point in my life. I do still dig the message of “The Warmth,” which is essentially the angry white boy version of the kitten “hang in there!” poster. But even back in ‘99 I hated the lyrics to “Out From Under.” “To resist is to piss in the wind - anyone who does will end up smelling.” Really? Those lyrics were as eye roll inducing in ‘99 as they are now.
These guys make it hard to figure out if it’s heavy metal or alternative they’re making. I guess that’s why it’s on the list. Plus the 3 top 10s. This is a college album for me.
Solid album with a lot of energy (if not remarkable).
First time I’ve ever listened to this whole album even though a college friend loves this band. It was better than I expected.
Love
A lot of hate for this one on here? I’m down the middle, I remember a few people recommending this to me back in the day and I never really saw the appeal. I can now kind of appreciate that it’s covering a few bases and doing it pretty well…but I think the fact remains, it’s just too emo for me.
This kind of comes off as "the thinking man's nu-metal" for better and worse, with cringy, poorly aged moments of record scratching, poor rapping, and lyrics that could only move an angsty teenager to tears, but admittedly it is far better at creating compelling hooks than its contemporaries, and even has some musicianship that is quite commendable, with some really high quality bass-lines, and admittedly that record scratching, while dull within a song, is quite commendable as a nearly four minute solo, to the point where I'd put it above most of the actual songs here. It's a mixed bag of mixed emotions, and it leaves my rating feeling just as mixed. All that can truly be taken away here is that Stellar is the only true song worth salvaging today, but that isn't to say every other song is bad, just poor in modern lenses.
A less macho version of nu-metal. Similar vibe musically to Linkin Park and Fuel. Strong, clean production by Scott Litt. Highlights: "The Warmth" (cool spacey vibe with strong drums and bassline), "Stellar" and "I Miss You" (nice love songs), "Drive" (catchy chorus and jaunty guitar), "Pardon Me" (good example of the heavier songs on the album)
It's okay. I never really got into Incubus but always meant to. Probably a bit too nu metal for me.
g r ooo v y
Could have been worse, but not a groove that grabs me.
I really liked the first few tracks but was less enthralled with the second half of the album. I might've liked this more when it was released had I been paying attention.
Hmmmm… well, I knew the song “Drive” going into this. It’s a’ight. Is this an album I needed to hear before I died? I can think of others of this ilk that probably deserve to be here over this. Not terrible. Lead singer has a nice voice. Some of the songs were decent.
Not the best album in the world, but not nearly as bad as people make it out to be. Recognized “Drive”, and honestly having never heard the rest before it was an enjoyable listen, and something I could actually see myself going back to at some point, a good 3.5 out of 5.
It was OK. Never a big fan like some of my friends. I still am not I guess.
polished sound, average sound for the era. Probably won't go back to.
Some classic jams. Real trip down memory lane
A huge album of the late 90s, Incubus was hard to miss if you were a teen at the time whether you liked them or not. Their sound is a cross between nu metal, funk rock and alt rock with a little surf/skater rock in my opinion. Best: Pardon Me Worst: Battlestar Scralatchtica
Mwoah, wel wisselend maar begon nice 3
Idk much about Incubus besides the fact I always confused them for Interpol It’s 90’s nu-metal but decent for a change HL: "Nowhere Fast", "When it Comes", "Clean"
It has a few interesting starts, but pretty much falls back into '90s alt-nu-metal meh for most songs. "Drive" is a decent song with the only issue being the pointless DJ noodling that gets into a lot of the other music. I think they got better by the time of Light Grenades, this was a good step in that direction.
I did enjoy this album but don't think I'll go back to it. I may go back to some of the songs that I really enjoyed like "Drive", "Pardon Me" and "Stellar". 3.49/5
I’m not ever going to choose to put this on, but I wouldn’t be upset if it was background music.
Me gusta mucho como suena. 3/5.
Cringe
Not my cup of tea, but once in a while I don't mind taking a quick sip from theirs.
Altogether bland album that imo fails to distinguish itself from the late 90s/early 2000s soundscape. The only standout song was “I miss you” due to the raw vocals, which I appreciated.
Honestly I didn’t pay attention
A better listen than I expected, though this type of album needs more appropriate weather than the foggy day I got. I also just prefer other acts from this genre and time (specifically Alien Ant Farm).
Some good moments that I enjoyed. Generally very 90s alternative US, feels a bit cookie cutter at times.
Did I have a poster of Brandon Boyd in my college dorm room? Yes. Was it because I loved Incubus’s music? Not so much. This was fine. I liked the slower/softer songs and was turned off by the screamier songs. 2.5 rounded up to 3.
Best aardig, maar ook niet geweldig. Lijkt of ze net niet helemaal hun sound gevonden hebben. Paar prima nummers.
The two best songs on the album, i never heard before (10, 11). Love this project.
I was a bit disappointed by this album. I know the 3 hits on this album and like each of them. So I expected to enjoy the album. But the album was just ok as a complete mix.
Definitely not metal but I really enjoyed some songs. However it suffers from whiney vocals like a lot of bands from this era
Don’t like it enough to give it a 4*, didn’t hate it enough to give it a 2*. Pretty typical commercial angst rock from the early aughts.
3.5
Incubus, Soundgarden for pop punk heads. This aged a little better than I expected! Drive was a good shot of nostalgia
Did nothing for me, and I forgot I was listening to music a couple of times.
No real standouts aside from the radio releases. It's not bad, overall.
3.5
few good songs, rest nothing special
It was pretty good. Some of the tracks I really liked but some had too much drums and sounded too noisy to me. I give it 3 stars.
decent album
Surprisingly consistent
The most 90s-sounding album I have ever heard. Aside from Nervana. Feeling a light 3/5
That good ole 90's grunge rock. still pondering if I would choose water over wine
I like more than I thought I would. I also knew more songs than I thought I would. Overall good album. Glad I listened to it.
Solid album.
I remember when Pardon Me came out and I really liked it, Drive less so though it has grown in me. I always assumed this was their debut album but obviously that’s not true, I had to look it up but it’s way too sophisticated to be a first album, they are a very tight band. I don’t know. Incubus falls into the category of Why didn’t this grab me when it came out? Like, why Tool and not this? It’s emotional, the lyrics are pretty good (if less opaque), and the musicianship is rock solid. So who knows? They’re good, it’s just not my thing.
Favourite songs: Pardon Me, Drive, Clean, Privilege, Nowhere Fast, When It Comes Least favourite songs: Battlestar Scralatchtica 3/5
Metal-rock alternativo. Ni fu ni fa.
Okay
The album before this kinda sounds like Korn. They changed a lot during this period. I really liked the song “Pardon Me” back then, but the rap-rock style feels really dated these days. That said, these songs show talented musicians honing their style and craft—their success comes as no surprise.
First of all this is NOT metal. Genre designations are so sketchy on this list, as well as the actual content. This record is a microcosm for all rock to come in the early2000s it eas all mid AF
I’m not really sure why this album is on this list, it really doesn’t feel like anything particularly new that I prefer in other bands. I didn’t actively dislike it, but I didn’t particularly like it either. I was familiar with a couple of the songs, in particular Drive. Listens: 2 Fave Track: Make Yourself Rating: A low 3
Not their best album

My boss loves this thing here. He tried to convince me about the quality of Incubus's music, their composition complexities and stuff like that. Sadly for my boss, I do actually prefer Taylor swift. Sorry incubus, sorry massimo, hopefully I won't get fired.
I am going to say what is quite possibly the most controversial thing I have said for this website so far. I don't hate nu-metal. Don't get me wrong, there is some really bad nu-metal out there (I'll get to you eventually, Limp Bizkit), but it also has some decent stuff. This album is almost that. I didn't dislike this album as much as I thought I would. It wasn't that good, but it wasn't horrible. The vocals, could've been better, but definitely aren't the worst vocals I've ever heard. The instrumentals had some weird choices (turntable moment), but weren't really bad. The writing occasionally had some of that vulgarity that comes hand-in-hand with nu-metal, but wasn't too constant or that horrible when it was there. Despite those, I thought the album was kind of okay at times. This album isn't even fully nu-metal. Some songs don't really have those elements, like at all. Overall, an okay album, but not one with a ton of impact or anything to really stand out all that much. 2/5. EDIT: So, nu-metal is something that I've actually grown to appreciate a good deal since this initial listen and I kinda like this album now that I've revisited it. Oh yeah, I re-listened to the album and it's good. Not my favorite nu-metal album ever, but it's got some good stuff to it. "Drive" is pretty great. Decent 3/5.
p842, 1999. 3 stars. Well done but distinctly average 90s metal. Desperately want to be Nirvana but lack the talent.
Never judge a book by its cover. I’d always imagined Incubus to be more at the death end of metal. But it was quite melodic, somewhere between Green Day , Faith no More and Collective Soul. Not awful but - even though I played it twice today - not memorable either.
Never listened to this album before- there are some good songs outside of the radio singles. However, feels like I am missing the trick with why this is supposedly so good. Battleship scratchtacula was a nice surprise, but not loving the whole album.
I always wanted to check Incubus, somehow was never within my visibility. I wish I had discovered it when I was 27 and my inner Kurt Cobain was dying and I was in so much conflict with myself and the world:’)
I thought I've heard every bit of new-metal-post-grunge-music-with-a-DJ way back when it was mainstream. Is this what my possible grandkids will call "old folks stuff"? The funky bass section is great, though! Oh how I love Wikipedia: Boyd reflected on the tension in a 2001 interview with Spin, saying that "when we're making music together, it's like five men making love — in a very platonic sense."
the vibes of my teenagehood, but this album is new for me so it sounded pretty fresh. in contrast to other albums actually sounds distinct and decent. love the energy, would listen again
Not my personal fav, but thr drumming is godlike
Kann man mal hören
This album was alright back in 1999, feels mostly dated and cringe in places. Still has a few good tracks, I still seem to regularly add Drive to my various rock playlists. 2.5
Maybe it's just me but this genre sort of wanes on me a bit so I was really into the album at the beginning and then I got a little less enthusiastic. Overall a nice alternative metal song I'm glad I got to listen to.
I feel like this album was pretty good but I've honestly forgotten what i heard already.
Interesting........
I have a soft spot for this album as I got really into Incubus in high school. Having said that, I didn't enjoy most of this album. It's a good example of an album that has a couple of really stellar songs with a lot of filler. The band is quite proficient and they experiment with various rhythms throughout, but the music that results is largely bland and vaguely alternative rock sounding with a dose of funk metal that doesn't quite hit the spot the way it should.
This album was a turning point for Incubus. This third album officially put them on the map and produced several of their best songs and just generally well known and appreciated rock songs. This album was a turning point for nu metal in general, too. While this is technically nu metal, it is a bit on the softer side than other nu metal acts. This is paramount for Incubus' musical success, because this really allows their funky aspects to show through more. They're like a slightly more metal-leaning Red Hot Chili Peppers. And that is a surprisingly untapped area; it has given Incubus the perfect area to shine in. This band and this album are by no means THE quintessential nu metal act, but they certainly cemented themselves here as a powerhouse act at the forefront of the movement. Songs like "Stellar" and "Pardon Me" are easy 5s in my book, standing as amazing examples of Incubus' best work, and as outstanding examples of alternative rock and nu metal, in general. The rest of the album is good, but just not THAT good. This comes close to a 3.5 for me.
Wel aardige riffs, maar de zangpartijen zijn vrij ongeinspireerd, typisch begin jaren 0. Ook niet echt solo's ofzo. Dus verder vrij saai.
Quite enjoyed listening to this one, not too bad.
I was not at all looking forward to listening to this. No, not at all. But I ended up really quite liking it. Tuneful in its way. A clear voice and a message.
“Drive” is great. The rest is disappointingly average.
It’s alright post grunge. It’s not super inspiring and the songs aren’t great. The vocals are nice and the song “drive” is really good but it doesn’t save this album from being kinda meh.
This album was ok. Battlestar Scralatchtica is definitely my favorite track on the album. I feel like the band is trying to mix hip-hop, grunge, and jazz elements, but they don't quite blend it well resulting in an album that doesn't have clear mood or tone. There are songs that I will be re-listening to, but I don't think this is an album that I would want to take the time to listen through to its entirety
3.5/5 Good, but slightly generic album. Not much stood out except for Drive.
I remember when this album came out and my friends were pretty into it. I was never super taken with it. Coming back to it 20+ years later, it has some good stuff but I mostly feel the same. There's a polish to this that I don't care for, and I find that off-putting. 2.75/5
A recentish discovery for me is learning that Incubus kind of slaps? I was mever into most radio rock, but they have some stuff that’s decently written and has tight performances, so I can definitely see myself stick around for their set at a festival. From what I’ve experienced though, this probably isn’t their best album. Their first is a little more out there and their later stuff tighter, but this has “Drive” and “Pardon Me”, so I get why it’s here. Gonna do a C+
Incubus remind me of Tom so they get a 3* straightaway. None of these tracks were the ones I particularly remember but they have a good sound. I was just too busy and distracted to really appreciate them. 3*
Solid.
Meh, I just don't really like incubus. The album is fine. It's whatever.
Heavy, but far from unbearable. Snuck a DJ/disc-scratching track in
Yeah, well I have heard of Incubus before, but I couldn't name or remember any of their song. And after listening to Make Yourself I know why it might be - all of their tracks are bland and uninteresting. I was slightly hyped through first few songs, because there were nice elements, mixing a bit of electronic music, rock, metal and rap. But that was it, just a mix of those genres, but the sum of all parts was definitely underwhelming. I still can't name or remember any of Incubus songs, so this is not a good sign. It's not bad either, but just painfully average.
Some good hits, other then that, average.
At its best, this is really good alt-rock, but there's way too much nu-metal garbage happening. I've said this elsewhere, but if you make a DJ a permanent part of your band and don't give him any other jobs, he's going to make sure you know he's there. Nobody needs that much scratching. Best track: Drive
Quite enjoyable. A bit Hundred Reasons - and other grungy rock bands of that era. But very listenable to.
Ok album with some really great moments.
Not the best album of the nineties, but certainly one of the most nineties feeling. Enjoyed most, if not all, tracks. However, none of these songs were particularly exciting. 3/5
Put me in an interesting head space during Monday drive time. Will listen to again
да, но нет
Okay
I’ve only ever heard Drive, I liked this album.
3.5/5 This was ok but I found a few of the more rap metal songs to be a bit cheesy. “Pardon me” is a good song.
The voice sounded fine at first, but it got increasingly more annoying over the course of the album. I don’t understand how this album is classified as nu-metal, since it just sounds like alt-rock to me. It was alright.
Boring
Enjoyed
This seemed about as middle of the road, middlebrow hard rock as you could possibly get. I've got no use for it at all, though there's nothing distinct enough in it for me to actually hate it.
I really wanted to give this a 4, but the lesser known songs on this album are below average and even though the hits hit hard overall it’s just pretty good
Not as gruelling, heavy or raucous as I imagined. I think I’ve avoided this lot because their name suggests a more dissonant and uncomfortable experience than it actually was. The differing styles surprised me and Battlestar Scralatchica made me laugh out loud. Good on them for mixing it up. Not really inclined to play them again but they didn’t do my head in.
Not even a week ago, after hearing some of my original band's music from the '90s, Adler's girlfriend Lydia told me I should check out Incubus — apparently we reminded her of them and she thought I'd dig it, so funny to me it showed up this week on our list. I'm on the fence — easily a 3-star, but did it reach a 4? There were elements I really liked: tight musicianship, heavy but not ridiculously so, musical but not trite. Well... lyrically, it did tend to be a bit juvenile and clunky, and I didn't love the vocalist unequivocally. He's solid, for sure, but hung around in the same range throughout and seemed to have a lot of the same ideas song to song. But that could also be a product of this being a first listen. But, considering Lydia kept insisting that "Science" was THE album I had to listen to, and considering that album is not on the list, I'm going with a 3 and going to freelance and check that one out to see if it tickles me in ways this one didn't.
Pleasantly surprised by this, although it loses me a bit when it gets heavier, actually enjoyed the funkier parts. They have a Linkin park x RHCP vibe to them. His voice is strongest when used for more melodic lines! Can defi hear the transition from 90s alt-metal into early 2000 metal rap stuff!
It's ok, bit samey but otherwise good.
та хз
the scratching/dj parts of this album don't hold up as well, but Pardon Me, Stellar, Warmth are all songs that immediately bring you to a place of comfort. Drive as well, but I find that song to be a bit overhyped/overplayed so not as enjoyable.
Rating: 6/10 Best songs: Pardon me
This was peak 90s alternative. You had the spacy guitar distortion, the scratching turntables, the acoustic "power ballad", lyrics that were disenfranchised and (let's be honest) a bit whiny. All-in-all, I love this record for the time that I first heard it because I was all of those things. Now, it still has some nostalgia but I'm not sure if it came out today I'd be that into it.
I didn't mind this at first, a bit cheesy but I could get on with it. By the end I was very bored. It's just one sound carrying the whole thing. I was very bored of that by the end. Don't think it was bad enough for 2 stars, but 3 seems too kind. I'll go for 3 because I'm feeling nice.
Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Yeah, it’s very progressive and just sounds very far ahead of its time, enjoyable from the get go Favourite song: Track 11 - I Miss You
Had only vaguely heard of them before - a 90s time capsule for me. Music is OK, lyrics and vocals a bit lame
A consistent album, I can't pick any song which was a lot worse than others.
decent album. I have a soft spot for this band
No problem with this but I don't love it. I remember the hits when it came out and as then, it's fine but meh.
C’était moins hard que je ne m’y attendais, mais j’ai bien aimé, surtout que c’est très représentatif de la musique de ma jeunesse. Un bon moment de rock
Other than “Drive,” I can do without this album.
Incubus is nooit echt mijn ding geweest, allemaal wat te braafjes naar mijn zin.
Listening to this album I better understand why my metal loving friends wished nu metal bands would go harder.
Not the best late 90s/early 2000s alt rock album available. I always felt like incubus was the lamer options of the alternative bands. Drive is a decent song but it gets old. Pardon me is only okay. Incubus just never really makes you feel excited to say let’s listen to incubus. But overall this is still better than a good portion of albums on this list. 5.7/10
It sounds like Incubus. I remember having the CD in the car and skipping songs all the time. It’s not the worse but you just need to listen to 2-3 songs to get the whole vibe.
Already heard it was fine might listen again
Interesting
The late 90s and early 2000s was such a weird time for music. I mean, Limp Bizkit and Kid Rock were topping the charts so it was really like the Wild West. I think Incubus is one of the better bands from the whole nu-metal scene. Sure some aspects of them didn’t particularly age well, but I enjoy their incorporations of grunge and early emo elements. It’s overall not that good of a record but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy listening.
They have better stuff but this album isn’t too bad either
I know this band is lauded and the lead vocalist is considered great, but for some reason - his style of singing really feels dated and not enjoyable to me. I understand his clarity and style is so defined, but just not my style. It's almost a Broadway rock musical style. They do rock though. There are a couple of decent songs here - Privilege, The Warmth, and of course Drive. This album is okay.
I'm not the biggest Incubus fan, although I probably should be
This rock music is so boring and completely lacks personality. I love the vocalist and feel the band could succeed with him more being a pop punk band.
I remember when the singles from this were pretty popular. I never really cared for Incubus at the time; however, today I found myself glad when those familiar songs came on. Given that I like the singles, perhaps if I exposed myself to this album a few times, it would grow on me. I'm not really interested in doing that, so this album lands as a solid 3.5 for me.
There is metal I have really enjoyed, this isn't really that... but I don't really dislike it 51/112
3.3 - A solid backing band and a good singer that unfortunately made some regrettable stylistic decisions. First, the DJ doesn’t contribute enough beyond a few nanoseconds of scratching here and there. Every time I hear a stray sample or a scratch I wonder why they keep this person on payroll and whether he gets his own bed on the tour bus. Second, while the guitar work is technically proficient, the effects sound repetitive. It’s like hearing someone at a Guitar Center testing out the same few pedals (e.g phaser) again and again. Third, the lyrics remind me of a 17 year old who just returned from his first backpacking trip abroad and is stoked to share all of his newfound wisdom with the world. So many bold proclamations! (“experience the warmth before you grow old!”, “if you really want to live, why not make yourself”…). Fourth, by far their biggest hit off this is “Drive”, which rivals “Fly” by Sugar Ray as the song you’re most likely to hear at a dentist’s office.
First time I’ve listened to them with intention.
Betra en mig minnti.
I was expecting pure metal, but the album is actually quite melodic in places. Nothing that grabs me.
Quite like this album, 3 1/2 stars. The Warmth is a really good song. Might rise to a 4 star. Some parts has aged kinda meh (Battlestar etc)
Liked this, but this is definitely not an ALBUM I HAD TO LISTEN TO BEFORE I DIED.
Coming across this album, I had low expectations. Turns out I was plenty surprised by how consistent the band were throughout. It's not the greatest album in the world but Incubus did good with what they had to offer. Never judge a book by its cover, I guess! Favorites: Privilege, Nowhere Fast, Consequence, The Warmth, Make Yourself, Drive, I Miss You.
Alternative metal, 1999. Just a normal record with simple ideas developed quite well during this project. The album also has one big hit "Drive" which increased the commercial success of the band.
Tool without the complexity

Reminds me of early YouTube tutorials where some kid would write in the Windows XP notepad on how to get infinite gold in Runescape or something, while blasting a song like this in the background. I have to admit that I thought the more popular songs from this album were sort of unbearable. "Drive" especially. What an insanely boring tune - already seemed overplayed and I've never heard it before in my entire life. The more obscure songs with less Spotify streams were my jam though - "When It Comes" and "Battlestar Scralatchtica" especially.
I enjoyed these songs when they were on the radio in the late 90s. Did I think this album was mind-blowing or historically important? Nah. Fun? Sure.
Quite liked this. Is it nu-metal ? Strong vocals. Clean riffs. Bright production. I'd like to see more of the electronica in the mix. The turntablism seems a bit peripheral. No real killer tunes. 3
Ça m'en touche une sans faire bouger l'autre
hoobastank mais des fois y a un peu de djumbé
Metal-rock alternativo. Ni fu ni fa.
2.5/5. Only enjoyable song on this album is Drive, and everything else sounds like generic alt rock noise.
Enjoyed this much more than I thought I would, but i wasn't expecting much at all having not been a fan before. I could see playing it again, if I was in the right mood.
Such a nostalgic album for me. I think it's aged a lot better than many of their nu metal peers. I love how they integrated funk in a really fresh way.
Crisp Failth no More/Placebo esque rock.
It's kind of high-schooley but I liked a couple of tracks: Stellar, Nowhere Fast, and Make Yourself.
Not a bad list
Mostly just generic alternative or grunge rock.
Good tunes here!! Enjoyed!!
WHATEVER TOMORROWWWW BRINGS, I'LL BE THEREEEEE, WITH OPEN ARMS AND OPEN EYES, YEAHHHH. Not sure what else to say, this is a really good new-age-ish rock album. Some solid songs, then "Drive" comes on and it's all over. Cool to hear the album behind the hit! Favorite tracks: Drive, Battlestar Scralatchtica, Make Yourself, The Warmth. Album art: Very cool, very digital, very '90s. Not sure what I'm looking at but I love it. 3.5/5
I looked up it was nu metal but other than that I have no clue here… Privilege is a good enough song I like the guitars quite a bit, the singing on the verses sounds a bit off but it’s still good. I like the start to Nowhere fast and then the crashing guitars that take over I’am not a fan of the verses but the chorus is good. I like consequence the most at the moment but there’s this subtle bit of turntable scratching which is annoying but it makes sense for a nu metal band. I felt consequence flowed well into the warmth ( cause they sound so similar) a good song theres a bit of guitar which was at the end of the intro that doesn’t really get built on instead of on the chorus which I think still needs to explode a bit more to be great. When it comes is good most of the criticism from the warmth applies here but I like the chorus much more. Stellar is a good song it sounds a lot like the other songs but the applications some of the best . Make yourself really sticks out I enjoy this one especially the bridge. Drive is a really good acoustic song but I would’ve placed it earlier on in the album to show this bands range more. Clean has a great intro slowly building itself up only to collapse into the verses this one goes back to that same sound but it’s better just cause of the intro. Battlestar scralatichtica is a rather dull instrumental to be honest it doesn’t really work. I don’t mind I miss you it’s just a slower version of what we had already. I think pardon me and I miss you should be swapped around but it’s a better song than I miss you so it doesn’t matter. Honestly I liked it but the songs kinda formed a mush as they are all too sonically similar especially on the first half, the vocals also feel too autotune but it’s better than pretty much any pop punk group.
When I went into this record I didn't have high hopes. I was expecting another Korn. However, I was pleasantly surprised by what I got. Suffice to say it’s miles better than the afforementioned record. I still don't really get the whole metal/rock-without-solos thing. Why cut out the best bits? Nevertheless the drumming on this album was surprisingly good, which gave the songs a big boost. Nevertheless I agree with other reviewers that this record could do with being about 7 or 8 minutes shorter. Favourite tracks - ,nowhere fast’ for its drumming and ‘battleschratch galactica’ for being a pleasant and jazzy surprise. I don’t really get the hype over tracks like ‘stellar’ and ‘drive’ they seem a little too family-friendly-radio-at-8:15 for me, and I found the solo on the latter track underwhelming. That said, most of the songs here are pretty simple. This, to me, is an example of a very good three star record, but not quite 3.5 stars.
Not great but not bad either. Sounds like a hundred other bands
Incubus is slightly tolerable butt-rock. Definitely a time and a place thing, and that place was early 2000s in high school for me. It's rock that is "there". I suppose musically it's fine but vocally it's pure butt.
Pretty standard stuff for a late 90's alt-rock release. Has some good moments, not much else.
Weird choice. This is a band and album that I'm intimately familiar with, having long since grown out of them. The entry on the list calls this nu-metal's "finest hour," a statement patently absurd in a world where System of a Down and Deftones exist - the latter of whom are conspicuously absent from the list. Maybe don't posture yourselves to be experts on something if you speak from a place of ignorance? Anyway. Incubus are barely nu-metal. They began as more of a watered down Mr. Bungle, sacrificing the majority of its weirdness in favor of accessibility. They quickly began to morph into a 311-ish beach hippie baja hoodie sound. It's hippie music with distortion, but it lacks any real depth. All of its ponderings and naval gazings are just lay-in-the-grass far-outisms. It has a certain amount of charm that mostly comes from its calmer moments that can evoke a sort bittersweet yearning. That capture that emotional vibe very well. But the rest of the album feels utterly unnecessary in the grand scheme of things. Once you've heard Tub Ring's Drake Equation, there's no real need to listen to Incubus - outside of maybe Wish You Were Here, which is the song (not on this album) that distills that yearning vibe that I described above down to its essence and removes all the whiteboy dreadlock frills that fill out the rest of this band. The Warmth plays a similar role on this album, but the cheesy turntables (and boy are the turntables in Incubus cheesy) overall really lower the quality of the song. I'm not 16 anymore. I'm now (painfully) aware of how shallow most of the music I listened to when I was 16 is. The authors of the list should as well. The drummer's pretty good though.
Takes me back to my teenager years. Never listened to incubus before, but younger me would have liked this. Not an must listen album, but it’s okay. Favourite songs: - Drive - Pardon me
Heerlijk edgy album
Could very much have done without the scratching but overall this had a nice nostalgic sound that I enjoyed
Late 90's nu-metallers make clean, crunchy record. Distorted guitars that your mum would find acceptable, scratching, smooth vocals. It's almost Yacht Rawk. Lots of teenagers sitting in their bedrooms feeling hard done by listened to this. Best Tracks: Privilege; When It Comes; Drive
I was apprehensive going into this one...but it was alright
I like the funk that incubus brings in later work and you can see it start to develop on this album. The DJ they added for this is fantastic as well.
Bom post-grunge
Mediocre
Feel like I ran into this album at the wrong age. I would have loved this as a teenager. As it is, fun but would probably only revisit a track or two. Definitely reads to me, for whatever reason, that this album influenced a lot of pop punk sound, like Fall Out Boy. But who's to say for sure? Fave track: Battlestar Scratchlatchtica. Whimsical, creative, and fun.
Incubus are a band beloved by my peers but I've always kept at arm's length. With 'Make Yourself', I can see both why people like them, but also feel fully justified in giving 'em the swerve. Funky, hip-hop influenced, vaguely nu-metal - they certainly have their own niche. I like some of their chewy riffs, and for 1999 - the land that good guitar tones forgot - they get some lovely noises out of their instruments. But for all their slippery rhythms and undoubted skill, they're missing the x factor, the thing that allows them to kick free from terra firma and fly. They play it all a little safe, no? Lack of competence can be forgiven (can be a bonus sometimes); lack of ambition cannot.
5/10. Had some moments that I enjoyed, but this kind of music just has not aged very well
5/10. It was an interesting mix of genres, but didn't really come together into anything too exciting except for Drive.
I could dig a couple songs I guess. 5/10
Not really into incubus, decent album though. Couple of nice songs but also some really meandering ones.
This is fine, but not as fine as I remember
Ok. Not my style of music but nice enough to listen to. Might put it on in the background again 6/10
The bass work is really wild. They have a great sense for song dynamics on Nowhere Fast. The album gets kind of same-y in the middle. Drive gives a breath of free air to this album. Battlestar is way out of place.
Cool?
Dennoch 2.5
Not a fan of incubus, not for me
Top Picks: Clean & Battlestar Scralatchtica Was a fan of Drive already, so I was excited to hear the rest of the album. Not bad, kinda reminds me of Blood Sugar Sex Magic, but not as many catchy tunes and maybe a bit too nu-metal for my taste.
Very ordinary 90s style toothless rock/metal. Generally, I like this kind of music but this felt a lot like trying to cash in on a trend and not much originality.
Not bad, almost reminding me of Faith No More at times, but just a bit over-produced for my liking.
Again not a genre I am very familiar with, but I generally enjoyed this album. It has a nice funky side that drew me in. The rhythm section is strong and pushes the music forward. Songs of note.... The Warmth is a cool song with a warm, subtle beat perhaps my favorite on the album Make Yourself also good Drive is also good and the first that I recognize. This was a hit. Battlestar Scralatchtika..a nice funky instrumental tune. An enjoyable listen with at least 4 songs that were noteworthy 3.5 🌟
Not a bad time. Some solid songs, but it's been 2 days and I'm forgetting most of the experience already.
A few classics on here (Pardon Me the big Stand out) and I like the album as a whole, but some songs are a bit filler-ish/ I don't really like. It's no Morning View, that's for sure, but they are on their way. Incredible Band.
Not a massive fan of the 90s nu metal situation but there's some undeniably fat riffs
Knew some of this album. I enjoyed some songs but not others!
Rather flat and commercial pop-rock
Nostalgic but I don't know that it will age well.
An alright album with some good songs. Not exactly my cup of tea but not bad either. Highlighted songs: Pardon Me, Battlestar Scralatchtica
The sort of music this band makes isn't what I'm usually into, but I was pleasantly surprised. I liked it. It wasn't amazing, but definitely good. 3/5 stars.
Really 3.5 but that isn’t an option. Better than 6/10 but not as good as 8/10. If I consider music in 1999, this is decent rock. Some intergalactic ditties. Some songs are probably only good because they have nostalgic reminders of my high school years.
Accessible hard rock with record scratching. Nothing too abrasive.
I do like a lot of tracks from Incubus. As a whole album it's pretty hit and miss, but still some good moments on this one. Drive is a classic
Drive song
I had this album in college. I never really got into it.
More of a 2.5 than a 3. I don't think at any point I was particularly bored or wanting to not listen to this, but there were also almost no parts that stuck out to me. So it's a perfectly average, fine album to me.
No es mi estilo pero no está mal
Never understood the praise around this album. A couple of good tracks: Drive, The Warmth... and the rest of it it is just plain random generic millennial rock...
Drive and the backhalf really saved this album. Otherwise mostly 2000s nostalgia.
Rock mezcla de alternativa y algo de industrial. Aun siendo un género que me gusta, no me ha llenado especialmente y no estaría entre mis favoritos
Not as bad as I thought it would be
Juste pour m'avoir rappelé l'existence de "Drive", ça a valu la peine ahaha! J'ai beaucoup trop écouté cette chanson jadis naguère!
Mildly ashamed by how much I liked this.
Definitely emblematic of where rock music was in '99, but maybe not what I'd pick from that era in such a tight list. More specifically, why "Make Yourself" and not "Hybrid Theory"? Similar nu-metal and hip-hop influences, but the latter is probably more indicative of music to come and overall more influential.
I may be a little biased here, but an ex of mine loved incubus and needless to say... I’m not a big fan. That being said listening to the album feels like an incubus album and most of the songs felt very similar.
It was okay, again very much representation of the time.
Honestly it’s not nearly as bad as I thought it might be. Still not sure why it’s on here though. Kinda feels like a Soundgarden, sounds like it might even have influenced bands like Linkin Park(?). Pretty groovy bass and drums. Part of me just hears it and feels a little cringey though (Make Yourself has some CRINGE). Am I gonna come back to this ever? Probably not. Pretty mild, middle of the road.
On first listen, this was a 2. But I gave it another spin, and realized that it had some quality tunes, just not in a genre that I usually love. The title track was especially good to these ears.
Honestly had no strong feelings about this. Three track run from “Drive” to “Battlestar” rocks tho.
Not that bad, I was right.
I only knew them from the song Wish You Were Here, which I took the title from such a classic song and didn't exactly replicate it. Thus I was underwhelmed when I saw this pop up from the generator today. What I found was a pleasant album. The lyrics were nice platitudes and the music was inoffensive. Yes, I even found myself tapping my foot along with some of the songs. But I can't say I found it an enjoyable listen. It wasn't bad, but there's nothing truly good about it either. I understand why the band was popular, much the same way I understand Bon Jovi was popular. It's a 2.5 and I'm not sure which way I'll go when it rate it tomorrow morning.
Non male, anche se non pienamente nelle mie corde
Not my thing
Not much to say. It was ok think more a 2 ok.
Standard rock. Not for me.
The looseness and humility of the delivery feels like one of the record’s strengths, but also holds it back from being timeless because it can sound immature if you listen to it with a certain angle. It sounds like “young man’s music” (I say at the ripe age of 34). This record is good and it is for someone, but it’s not for me. Hard to appreciate not coming out of a car’s tape deck. I think you had to be there. Drive still holds up as a pop gem, but it’s not like the rest of the record.
Incubus is one of those bands that annoyed me when they came out in the late 90s. They seemed too derivative of the early 90s stuff in this vein that proceeded them. They were also a lot like other crappy bands like Limp Bizcut that I hated. Basically light metal, or clean grunge, with some hiphop elements but nothing near the quality of Rage or even RCHP with the style they are going for. Listening to this again in 2026 just kind of confirms my earlier impressions. 2/5
This was a three (I wouldn’t ask someone why they were listening to it if I was around while it was on) until the lyric ‘To resist is to piss in the wind/Anyone who does will end up smelling’
Christ, this was terrible.
Album #97/98: Make Yourself - Incubus Genre (W): Alternative metal, nu metal, alternative rock, funk rock Singles: Pardon Me, Stellar, Drive I have not listened to this album before. Thoughts?: I doubt this is really an album I have to hear before I die, but some songs are alright. Overall mediocre album, not horrible but not enjoyable either. Sounds very average. Favorite songs: Privilege, Clean, Battlestar Scralatchtica, I Miss You
I dont know these guys music, but they seem to be not quite fitting into the regular established genres, which is fine - gotta applaud them going their own way I'm hearing a lot of influences, RHCP probably being the dominant one for me Something is just slightly off - I'm not getting the emotional rawness that I generally expect from a guitar band - its just a little but too refined, as if its grunge-lite which has been focussed-grouped for mass appeal, and in the process had it's heart and soul surgically removed Confusing
Dont see any original sounds, but maybe THIS ALBUM was the origin of some vibes in alternative rock
Given that it actually has a fair amount of sonic variety across its thirteen tracks, this is an almost impressively boring album. It washed over me so much that I’m struggling to think of *anything* to say about it at all, except that I really wasn’t a fan of the singer, who had an acute case of ‘whiny 90s American rock voice’. This genre isn’t to my taste at all, but I didn’t find it too offensive, so I guess it just about deserves 2 stars, even if this felt like one of the longest 48 minutes of my life.
Oh dear. Yet another rocky band trying to say something and change the world. Find the backdoor and head for the bin.
The band name "Incubus" doesn't exactly speak to their good taste, but I suppose that's to be expected from a metal band. Aside from the screeching guitars, which I hate, the singer's voice is alright. What I find strange is that the song "Drive" has by far the most views on YouTube. So what do people really like about Incubus: the noisy guitars or a decent song?
Nu metal was a dark time, and this is really not good enough to be considered part of that shitty genre. It’s barely metal, and it’s not even really nu enough either. Everything sounds the same (with the horrid exception of Battlestar Scralatchtica, which is really, really shit), and it’s all boring and tame. This is poo.
Just never got into it.
Some tracks were enjoyable (such as 'Drive' which I knew already) but some were a bit odd. I will say: if we can have Incubus in this list, we should also have Tool. (I can't fathom why they're not in it.)
aggressively late-90s. not in a good way.
I bet someone would like this. Do NOT give them my address.
Just sounds like a worse version of Deftones and rhcp and rhcp is already bad so this is somehow a step down from them. Some of the more metal songs are ok but songs like drive are so annoying to listen to 5/10 Favourite: Nowhere Fast Least Favourite: Drive
Its just...I dont like the voice most of the time.
I want to apologize to my good friend Kelly for this album rating. I can’t get behind Brandon Boyd’s voice, the music isn’t emo or rock enough. I wasn’t in to it then and I’m not going to get in to it now. I do know every word to “Drive,” but I realize maybe not by choice?
Angry music, soft singing, not very good.
Maybe an alternate universe me would’ve liked this? It’s almost decent?
mid
Goddamn music executives, taking a mediocre alt-rock band and turning them into a mediocre alt-pop bad.
The vast majority of this album I’m pretty allergic to. I truly don’t understand how scratching adds anything to this music. It could be a genre thing, but it was a real zeitgeist fad that has aged like organic lettuce. There are a few tracks that I don’t mind. The two singles are alright, and I kinda liked “I miss you”. Overall… tough album to Get through.
this is more up my alley than some of the other albums but not really a fan of anything in here
Meh. Nothing to see here
There is a certain smugness to this where you just know every band member is a insufferable "spiritual" person Has not aged well. 2*
Ok
Not good. Aged badly
I can't say I hated this album, and I can't say I liked it. Incubus has always been nu-metal for the dudes in therapy. The lead singer reminds me of your buddy who'll help you move, but doesn't take gas money. The safe nu-metal. The nu-metal for people who don't like the messiness of nu-metal. While there's space in music for this, it just kind of feels hollow. My Rating: 2/5
I really don't know what to think.
It's not good but it's fairly inoffensive
Decent moments but overall a terrible album.
Not a fan of NuMetal. Not something I would choose to listen to myself. I cant really think of specific bad things, but also I can't think of anything good. My favorite song is the first track I guess just because I had more tolerance for them then. Favorite Track - Privilege Least Favorite Track - Stellar ⭐️⭐️
Music for dorks who think managing a gas station is a “career.”
2,5
Make myself sound like creed?
