This was fun. Got my feet tapping and I could see myself adding a couple of the songs to various playlists.
Good but not my favorite album of theirs. 4/5

I don't really get the hate from the other reviews. This album is great! Pardon Me, Drive or Stellar ar examples of great hits. I think Morning View is better than this but this is still an amazing record.
I'm honestly shocked that the author went with this album over Morning View (which in my opinion is far better than this one). Oh well, I still like this one. It comes out of the gates with 2 bangers, Privilege and Nowhere Fast, the latter being impressive with the guitar and bass work especially. Brandon Boyd definitely has a lot of emotion in his voice and songs, and this album features it on a lot of songs. Good Incubus album, but I highly recommend you listen to Morning View before you die, it's 1000x better than this one.
Really like the vibes and the energetic music 4/5
4 - Good, but just good
This was my third 90s rock album in a row, but this one was definitely my favorite of the three. I already was familiar with Incubus and knew (and liked) a number of songs on the album. I had not heard the vast majority, however. While the style was very clearly late-90s rock/metal, it still had some uniqueness and freshness more than two decades after release. It also had varied themes, and felt a bit abstract in how it presented different topics. The vocals were good and kept you engaged. I also like the instrumentality and how it added some different elements than you might normally hear on a rock album. It ranged from the loudness you'd look for to some more quiet, nuanced moments. I think the weakest song was its most popular, "Drive". Not that it was bad, but it just didn't grab me like the rest did. Maybe it felt a little out of place, even though I did like that it changed up the pace a bit from the rest of the album. It could be one of those songs that is strong on its own, but is hard to place on an album. I could see myself coming back to this one and enjoying it every time. I'd say it was at the high end of good. Overall: 3.9/5
Great album. Stellar, Drive, and Pardon Me should make any rock play list.
This gives me some good nostalgia. Felt like I was watching the old trippy graphics on windows media player. Good times. I think the album still holds up, but I may be biased because of the impact on my personal life
I enjoyed this album more than I expected to. I kind had this band lobbed into the dud man bro era of late 90’s rock, but the rhythm section really brings a lot to the table. Lead singer has a lovely voice but it’s kind of that era and gets on my nerves a little
Навіть з минулим альбомом Incubus - S.C.I.E.N.C.E. Чи робить це S.C.I.E.N.C.E.
By far their most twee album, but still great
I really enjoyed this. But, I'm a bit confused about the metal label. This belongs on mixtapes with Goo Goo Dolls, Third Eye Blind and Matchbox 20, not Deftones, Korn, Limp Bizkit.
I really like this album, always have
Very late 90s sounding, but good
Ok, a couple albums ago I gave a newer album a 1. I didn't like it and stand by that. But I'm gonna do the hypocritical thing and give this album a 4. Does it deserve that? No, there's some cringey stuff that maybe doesn't hold up but it's a nostalgic banger that came out during my formative years. I'm not a critic, these ratings are how much I enjoyed it. It's not a classic by any stretch of the imagination and I don't know why I'm typing so much to justify this to no one in particular. Whatevs
I don't know why I never got more into Incubus as a teenager. I bought "A Crow Left of the Murder..." on CD because I loved "Megalomaniac," and I listened to that album a bunch. It's been years since I've heard it but I remember liking it front to back. Somehow, I just never ended up listening to more of them. Happy to correct that today. The band's style is a stew of different genres. They blend alt-rock and hardcore, with a touch of grunge, a dash of dub, and plenty of record scratches. It makes for a nice, diverse listen. I love Brandon Boyd's singing. He brings the emotional hooks to these songs. I love those big, soaring vocals.
Better than I expected or remember from back in the day. Overplayed singles made me forget how cool some of their deep cuts were at the time.
4.5/5
OK LOOOOVE, album saved and will be in rotation from now on 💅 4.5! Favs: Privilege Consequence Nowhere fast Make yourself Drive Clean I miss you- crying rn idk Pardon me
I have some major nostalgia for this album, notably because Drive was one of my moody, depressive teenager anthems, which held a sacred spot on my iPod and was often set on repeat. Brandon Boyd has one of the best rock voices of the late-90s, early-aughts period of alt rock. With Make Yourself, they’ve tamped down some of their RHCP funk rock worship and focus on hard rock driven riffs, aided by the occasional turntable and funky bass line. Aside from Drive, Pardon Me and Stellar were both mega hits in their own right. The non-single tracks are pretty mid, which is why this album doesn’t make it into the fours, but it’s a solid listen, especially if you lived through it. 3.8/5
Make Yourself is Incubus' third album, and was their breakthrough work. They combined metal, rap, and timing and transitions from alt-rock, with extensive turntable work from DJ Kilmore. The album's success was driven by a few of the band's early singles, like "Drive" and "Pardon Me," great examples of the interesting mixture that band produces.
I miss this 2000s era
Generic 90’s rock which I unfortunately am a fan of
I enjoyed this, recognised a few tunes from it as well. I was expecting it to be heavier, but it was just about right.
2/5/25. Admittedly it's the first time I've listened to the entire album, but still very nostalgic and a standout in its time. Very consistent!
My jr high crush loved this band.
I haven't listened to this since high school and surprisingly it holds up better than I thought it would, with Privilege and Consequence being my favorite tracks. Not sure why this is on here when Morning View and S.C.I.E.N.C.E. are definitely better, and almost polar opposites of each other when it comes to Incubus' sound. It was fun to revisit this album
heard Drive and Pardon me on the radio my whole life and this is them in context. nice.
This sounds like the opening to an early 2000’s action movie. You know the exact scene I’m talking about too. With that being said, this album is a banger, the hits HIT and it’s just some feel good crooning on silly beats.
I didn't want to listen to this on holiday, because I forgot who Incubus were and thought it was going to be a lot of nu-metal shouting. It's actually very, very good. Made me try and fail to lift some heavy weights. Obviously it's not really good, like a lovely quiet female singer-songwriter or a fey Scottish indie band or something, but in the context of American late 90s rock, it's about as good as it gets
I was a big fan of this band! I know most of their stuff. I would say that this is probably their essential record to listen to for a beginner, but it is not my favourite outting by them. Listening to this, I have flashbulb memories of jamming it on my old CD Walkman as I worked weekends at my old high school job. This is good listening for a directionless, apathetic teenager. I like the guitar parts in Drive. I think Brandon Boyd has an underrated voice for this genre. Mike Einziger is a talented musician and producer.
Not my favourite Incubus album but still very nice
Pretty good album I remember well from my teenage years. Innovative sound, heavy in lots of places. Solid vocals. DJ scratching is additive in some areas, not all.
I’ve always loved this album and Morning view
Good album if looking for some 90s/00s rock. Has some hits. Doesn't beat daughtry tho
surprisingly, white guys with whiny voices make great albums way more than you would expect
This album was pretty good. The best songs on here are Drive and Pardon Me. The worst was Battlestar Scralatchtica.
It was nice to hear some of these songs. I hadn't ever heard the whole album before, just whatever they played on the radio. And boy did it take me back to that time in my life. It was a tough spot. I was still trying to figure out myself while at the same time dealing with the most manipulative person I've ever met. It was rough. But I digress. As far as the album goes, it's getting a 4 from me.
I'll pre-face this by saying I love this band, and wanted to give this 5* but I think 4 is fair. Make Yourself is such a breath of fresh air. In the late 90s/early 00s there was a lot of boring rock music doing the rounds. Incubus are nothing if not innovative. This record is eclectic, anchoring itself with that grungey guitar tone, but pinging off in every direction in order to keep things fresh. Songs like Stellar, Make Yourself and Pardon Me are the perfect rock songs, in my opinion. Battlestar Scralatchtica is an awesome interlude, and Drive is the perfect lead single for an album like this. I do however think that there are better Incubus Albums - if you liked this then definitely try Morning View. That's an easy-peasy 5* album. As a nu-metalhead I would also give S.C.I.E.N.C.E 5* but I know that's a more controversial opinion. At any rate I'm glad this album is on this list, and thoroughly enjoyed revisiting it!
This one took me back to some great times. Every song rocks. They never reached this level of success again.
Quite enjoyable.
I hav always liked the instrumentation of Incubus: instead of keyboards, they use a turntable. My favorite song of theirs i snot on this album: "Nice To Know You" I know that "Drive" was played a LOT on the radio and MTV (remember MTV, kids?). But it works real well as a contrast from the title track; that primal scream to something a bit more chill. The drummer has great chops as well. I always like listening to what he plays, he isn't just doing boom boom pap. I don't think there was really any song I disliked or did not care for on this. Definitely some deeper tracks I will have to come back to... Top tracks: "Privilege," "The Warmth," "Make Yourself," "Batlestar Scralatchtica", "Drive"
I was not a fan of Incubus in the 2000's and I didn't know about them prior to this album. I did not associate them with the nu metal scene as I thought they were softer / poppier than that. But unlike their big selling follow-up to this album (Morningview) this album has more ties to their previous album and sound (SCIENCE). I'm not sure which is more original - their previous album and its clearly nu metal / turntable vibe (in a time when that was still not mainstream) or this album and its nuanced combination of nu metal and funk and alternative. I think the former has some more kickass, in your face beats (both guitar and turntable). But this album is better than I remember them for. It really grew on me on multiple listens. Some songs with cool guitar & bass grooves and DJ stylings are Privilege (great opening licks), Nowhere Fast (trippy opening), When It Comes (really mix instruments and turntable), Stellar (a single that I did always like), the title track (lays it on a little thick challenging the man, but I liked the attitude), Clean (funky intro), Pardon Me (another single that I always kind of liked), and Out from Under (I've heard better closers but it has its high amp moments). Still not the biggest fan of Drive, the most popular song from this album - a little too poppy. I Miss You was also a poppy softie, but I kind of liked it. And the lyrics and better than you might think across the entire album. More like a 3.5 but giving them a bump for the pleasant surprise.
Now, this is an excellent example of a band at the top of their game! Brilliant album full of excellent tunes! Privilege, The Warmth, Drive, Pardon Me and Make Yourself are all songs that would grace any album in this genre!
Better than I thought it would be and the singles, while dated, were entertaining.
A little heavy (like Muse)
Quite interesting record. I guess, had I listened in my teens, I'd be an Incubus fan. Cool.
Very good
Always been a very hit or miss band for me, personally… This album didn’t totally have me rockin’ out - but the talent is undeniable!
I’ve known quite a few people who really liked Incubus. I mean, REALLY liked them. I’ve always thought their big hits off this album were pretty alright, but never so great I felt the need to listen to the whole album. I think I still feel that way. That said, the full on scratch track was pretty cool. I don't get to hear a lot of turntablism these days.
Still a bop, tbh
Not my favorite band or genre of music, but I appreciate the lyrical talent, voice, and musicality of the members. Quite a few objectively good songs.
Pleasant surprise. good rock songs Never heard this album before , nor Incubus generally, but I like it. Very much a product of its late 90s nu metal times, but this is head and shoulders above some of the other players in that genre.
Aldrig hört innan, positivt överraskad!
Carino dai. Minchia "Stellar" e pure "Drive".
This era of rock has a special, albiet extremely laced in nostalgia, spot in my heart. Sounds like the radio station I would drive to in my first car. Some songs in here are staples of that time, like Stellar, Drive, and Pardon Me. The rest is mostly new to me, but it still feels comfy. It's not an amazing album, but one that I thoroughly enjoyed.
a softer linkin park. I like it.
big ol nostalgia bomb
Classic Incubus. Weird listening back to a whole album after such a long time - some of it seems a bit a bit twee almost! Like the rock/rap combo - feel like they were a precursor to Linkin Park. Battlestar Scralatchia is proper funky! Not heard it for a long time. Think Morning View is probably the better album, but this sums them up nicely.
i love the nu metal scratches wish there were more of that on here. still great though enjoyed this way more than i was initially expecting to
I think I hated some parts of this, but, almost despite myself, enjoyed the majority. It's difficult to be objective about anything related to alt-metal, but I feel this actually deserves 4 stars. It's a blend of other bands, not always the most subtle, or even musical, but it generally works. I can hear just enough System of a Down. Primus, Pearl Jam, etc. for it to feel grounded, without it being a straight copy of one particular band.
I never gave Incubus much respect in their hayday, but this was a really good one. Besides the hits, it had a lot of hidden gems. 4/5
This is a classic case of letting your opinion being swayed before listening to the first note. The name ‘Incubus’ doesn’t bring in cozy warm thoughts m, I thought for sure I’d hate this but surprised to find it wasn’t half bad.
What an album, loved it the first time, love it still. Strong 4, maybe even a 5
Sounds like Incubus, I don't love the genre, but I'll give this a listen every once in a while, but not heavy rotation.
first listen this was pretty rad
This is a solid 4/5 for me and I had no idea what to expect from this band. The vocals and guitar are really pretty good and I think it's tastefully heavy with just a nice hint of Jamiroquai for me. I can definitely see the appeal and will be revisiting this for sure. I think I've heard Drive before but it was just so-so for me, but Pardon Me was a great song. Lots of things for me to come back to on this album for sure.
feels a bit like Massive Attack/Portishead/Jamiroquai with heavier guitars at the ready. I really like was the drummer was doing throughout. Best of the 90s albums this site has thrown at me so far. 4-star experience.
Know the artist and the hits, but blind album. It was decent and might go and listen to it again. Right up my alley for style and such. Glad I listened to it.
Wildly ignorant to Incubus aside from Drive, but this album slapped. The drum sound was so clean and fun to tap along with and added the right amount of heaviness to the riffs
The first half of this album really all blurs together. I was going to give it a 3, but the back half really picks it up! Everything starting with Make Yourself bangs.
Somewhat surprised to see some Incubus representation on this list. Not that I'm disappointed, in fact I quite like Incubus. It's just that with how much this messy era of nu metal/alt metal/rap rock seems to get pooped on, I guess I wasn't expecting there to be any representation. Regardless, the album has a lot of jams, albeit a bit backloaded. "Drive" is obviously Incubus's biggest hit to many, but "Stellar" and "Pardon Me" both surpass it for me personally. Heck, even "I Miss You" was an unexpected surprise given it's one of the few slower tempo songs on the album. This is definitely a softer, more radio friendly take on nu/alt metal, or whatever you want to call it. That is totally fine by me though, as a majority of that genre is too much for me at times. However, I personally think the follow up to this, "Morning View", is the better Incubus album. The group moved away from this sorta nu metal sound and carved out a more creative project there. But on its own, "Make Yourself" is solidly enjoyable (outside of "Battlestar Scralatchtica") and a fun product of its time. 3.7/5
Good rock and roll!
I just love this band and have for a long time. They have a really unique sound that melds alt rock and nu metal and are just as competent with anger as they are with sentimentality.
I think I missed the Incubus train when they were popular. Which is too bad because I did enjoy this album. This album is stacked with singles too. They have almost a Deftones feel to them? Chino is definitely a unique singer... But I can see Deftones fans loving Incubus. Again, I wasn't a fan of Deftones... So I think that path was already blocked. Some cool riffs. Brandon Boyd has some very cool and unique vocal phrasing. The DJ scratches are outdated for sure, but in some songs they're used almost as a soundscape quality... One song they go all. Out with the scratches. Almost like a metal breakdown but scratches. Which was... Probably for the time, awesome. But for me, it was just meh. There is an instrumental song with a lot of DJ scratches that has a cool name: Battlestar Scralatchtica. The closer to this album is by far the best song and heaviest song on the album. Boyd even does a sweet ass scream. Need more of that. Less DJ scratching.
Call it a guilty pleasure. I'm not proud to give this 4 stars, lol.
Right in the nostalgia glands. Incubus was a sort of bridge between the rap rock bands and the old grunge bands at the time; not quite stupid enough to be nu metal but not quite soft enough to be indie. In a way they kinda dragged rock in to the 2000's on the radio at least. They still have a fairly unique sound. The guitarist sure loves his sitar emulation and delay, the drums are clean and the drummer has a good ear for dynamics in his snare hits. The bassist is probably too good for this kind of music and when he goes off you can tell. The singing is perfect for the sound, a bit overwrought some times but whatshisface has a large vocal range and doesn't strain himself to reach anything that would sound bad. More bands should emulate that. The lyrics are fairly terrible but that's ignorable. The DJ, well, he's there Because 1999. This is still a good album but there are some stinkers on here, as there always was. "Consequences" has such a weird chord progression in the verse that I always ended up skipping it because it wasn't "heavy" enough. It's actually a clever sequence but I still don't really like it. It's not even that bad of a song, I just want it to do something it doesn't. I've grown out of "I Miss You", a song that is so blatantly written for ex girlfriends, and kinda sounds off compared to the rest of the album. It seems like it should be a totally different album. "Drive" suffers from being overplayed and not being that good in the first place. The rest of the songs are awesome. I miss this level of distortion and feeling in rock music. It's just complicated enough with varying time signatures and progressions (Stellar, The Warmth, Pardon Me) to be interesting without making me feel like I have to put everything down and pay attention. The mixing and mastering is that clean sound without too much experimentation that I really like. All the various parts shine in their own way. A good album that captured the sound of the 90's and went just far away from it to be a standout in its own way.
I own a copy of this, and I've seen them live. They're good, but they always went into a group of bands where I enjoy a setlist or their best of but the albums don't quite hit the spot on the whole. Dirk Lance shines a lot on this. 3.75 rounded up to 4.
Not my favourite Incubus album, but it's a good listen.
right in the nostalgia
A bit shocked to see this on the list. Of all the random artists from my past that could potentially pop up, this never would have crossed my mind, especially when the more impressive artists that INFLUENCED Incubus have been left off the board. This started rough and I was thinking even though I am not the world's biggest Incubus fan, that it hadn't held up. But it sets up a mood, and gets a groove right. By the end it was an entertaining ride and throwback.
I was excited for Make Yourself, it had been probably 20 years since I listened to it. It did age great. Incubus is a mix of Finger Eleven (a mediocre Canadian band, no on here has heard of) and 311. Not a huge compliment. They are better than both those bands however. Drive and Pardon Me get all the glory for me the opener, Privilege is the best song. Nostalgia wins here, I’ll give it the lowest of 4s 8.0/10
There was a window of time between escaping an abusive relationship and meeting my now-spouse where I was, for the first time, on my own without roommates, with a steady job, and freedom to move, to date, to explore who I am without consequence. During that span, this was one of the albums that was released. It's a good album. Lyrics are basically stoned profundity, but the harmonies are fun and there's plenty of interesting hooks and such. When I was listening to this album and it came to an end, the player started cueing up other songs from that era -- the soundtrack of alternative rock from the late 90's/early aughts that was my constant companion as I zoomed around the highways and byways while putting myself back together. Interesting to look back on it now. Anyway, this is a good listen. Unexpected bangers: The Warmth, I Miss You, Clean.
Hard rock? Metal? Alternative? What is this? Never got into Incubus but this guy can sing for sure.
Solid
Alt rock classic.
An album of grunge influenced college rock, in a world that was about to become 98.7% nu-metal! Other than sounding out of time, this is a solid album, with a couple of late 90s staples, but it falls just short of full marks for not having an absolute classic, and for being a bit patchy. A solid four 🌟 album
Up and down a little as an album, but better than I'd expected.
Reasonable standard rock
Some strong '90s power music here. I thought it sounded a little generic except for "Drive," which has been a favorite since the day, and "Battlestar Scralatchtica" which stands out here and was quite enjoyable. All in all, getting to listen a second time was the charm and I liked it.
This album was the pinnacle of 90's grunge-alt in all the best ways. The timing was right for me, it felt like a defining era and I will always love Incubus. I don't get why people hate on them. There's so many good songs on here, I don't care what people say. "Stellar" is just that, meet me in outer-space baby. Hearing this album again made me realize how much "I Miss You" Incubus.
I didn't start liking Incubus until a few years after this album came out when I got full exposure in college. Although my fave song by them is not on this album, it's still stacked. Drive is highlight with Pardon Me right behind. Always loved I Miss You even as a slow one. Def place on the list for its influence on 90s kids and alternative rock but also enjoyable by any generation.
Big fan of this album. A couple of huge standout hits that hold up nowadays and even the deep cuts have a great sound. I've always liked the vocal style and melding of rock and nu-metal sounds. This album has great vibes for me. In general the more I hear Incubus the more I like them. I've seen them live and they always put on a great show. I've talked for years of delving into their discography which I still plan to do. Excited to to hear the remainder of their albums. 3.75 stars
Listened to this while playing Scholars of the South Tigris. I lost. My partner played this album for me a few months ago oddly enough. It definitely isn't music I'd listen to on my own...but I still really enjoyed both the musicianship and the musicality of the album.
Loved it
Décent album
Catchy and powerful guitar, some punchy bass parts, singable for sure. Nothing incredible, but very competent and consistent through the record, makes for a good listen.
The Warmth Drive I Miss You Pardon Me
This holds up so damn well. Great drums throughout and the bass on "Stellar" is just so damn juicy. "Drive" is still a fucking banger, all time classic song with such a good hook lyrically and musically. Not sure it quite elevates itself to a 5 for me, but it is certainly a very high 4 star. Great album!
Sometimes I wish you’d know they were the good old days when you were actually in them. 4.4
Had the Privilege to listen to this and really felt The Warmth of it. Pardon Me but this is Stellar like Battlestar Scralatchtica.
I remember some of these songs from the time of release. ‘Drive’ and ‘Pardon Me’ are the biggest songs on the album. I liked the funkiness of ‘Battlestar Scralatchtica’. This album is a pretty good summary of my music tastes at the end of the 90s
This album is simply STELLAR! Pun intended. Brandon Boyd and his boys write elegantly while incorporating pseudo-nu metal production into an overall alternative rock shell. What we get is hot after hit banger after banger. An unquestionably gorgeous album overall full of great records.
What the helll is Battlestar Scralatchtica? Sounds like they're taking something from the in sound from way out. Otherwise, a pretty massive album.
Though i've never been an incubus fan... i don't love the lead singer's voice, the jazzy, scratchy blending isn't what i'm looking for in my alternative rock... there is definitely something unique an interesting about the band. they have a pretty unique sound and they can hit it out of the park with songs like drive (stellar and pardon me are also good, though i think The Warmth is my runner up for the album).
j'ai bien aimé globalement ça me rappelle ce qu'écoute mon pere
While it's not Morning View, this is still a solid album.
Well, I already know I love this album
This album embodies the alternative rock I grew up on. Even though Drive and Pardon Me were the only songs I recognized the whole album felt so familiar. It's a fairly simple and played out recipe of lead + bass guitar, drums, and vocals but they do it well. There's some really interesting baselines, catchy choruses, and just a nice grunge feel.
I've never heard of Incubus before. The album came out during a period where I thought all new music was shit. That's the great thing about this website is that I'm discovering a lot of good music I would have never played. Anyway, I thought this was going to be non-stop grunge where each song sounded like the last. But I was surprised to hear the depth and variety of the songs. All of them were real songs and not just yelling to a beat. I'm not always up for the kind of energy most of the songs put out, but I did like it. It gets an unexpected 4. Scale: 5 - My absolute favorites. 4 - Albums I like. 3 - It was ok to listen to but I wouldn't seek it out. 2 - Didn't like. 1 - Absolute shit.
It Rocks! I have always loved the song "Drive"! I've heard it a few times... sometimes I'm not in the mood for loud stuff...today, I was ready. Standouts: Drive, Steller, Pardon Me, Privilege, Battlestar Scralatchtica, I Miss You Very good. 3.5
I never got into incubus and I think there’s a reason for that. I really don’t like the DJ stuff. I liked the harder moments. His voice can get annoying.
Deftones if it was epic
I'm already a big Incubus fan, so of course hearing this album again was no sweat. One of the best records to come out of post grunge 8/10
This takes me back. It's not an album (or genre) I revisit much these days, but there was a time when I'd throw this on and listen to the entire album without skipping a track. Sure, "Battlestar Scralatchtica" is a bit of a throwaway track, but it's not terrible, and the rest of the album's pretty solid.
Decent album with their top three hits on here. I'd admit that I have to be in a certain mood for this. 3.5 stars
I'm pretty torn on Incubus. They have some songs I absolutely love and find them to be unique, original and very well written. And I'm a huge fan of Brandon Boyd's voice. But, they also have some songs that don't sound very dissimilar and Boyd has one note that he sounds really good on and he repeats it often.
pretty good on first listen
I Miss You was my favorite. Awesome instrumentals, vocals and lyrics throughout. All the songs had my attention. Great album.
You really need to like Incubus’ vibes to appreciate this record and I know they have a lot of haters. I’m not one and this album is going on my list, since I don’t have a single one from this band.
Wow the other ratings are just chock full of vitriol. It’s a decent album with some stellar hits. It’s not amazing but it sank its teeth into a generation and has held on for almost three decades so I’d say it has its place among others.
I almost gave it a 5 but too many of the songs sound similar
Maravilla. Así de entrada: "Nowhere Fast", "When It Comes", "Drive", "I Miss You" y "Pardon Me" que tenía ya apuntadas, pero nada más volverlo a escuchar añado sobre la marcha: "Privilege", "Consequence","The Warmth", "Stellar", "Make Yourself" ,"Clean", "Battlestar Scralatchtica" (Instrumental) y "Out from Under".
Of what I have heard from Incubus so far, I think I prefer S.C.I.E.N.C.E. slightly more than this. Something about the pure and unbridled, almost juvenile, chaos that album is filled with appeals to my soul. But make no mistake, this record is still heavy. This does feel like the band tried to focus more on the alternative metal side of things instead of funk metal. And I also find that Brandon chose to focus more on delivering powerful vocal performances that really push his abilities for this record, instead of just more raw energy for the band like their previous album. One small thing I like is the various sample flips and DJ scratches sprinkled throughout this album. They aren't as prominent here as they were on S.C.I.E.N.C.E., but when they do come in, they add a nice touch to the overall sound. The three big singles from this album are all solid. But easily the most interesting one is Drive. Not only is it the most popular song the band has ever made, it is the only song on the album that is entirely acoustic. And it gives an interesting glimpse into the kind of sound the band would go for moving forward. Rating: 7/10
This album has such a distinct late-90s / early-2000s rock sound. I think if I'm going to honestly assess this album, I would say that it's not from the best genre of music out there, and no one should confuse the lyrics here for Dylan. But there's something about this that is just hits a super nostalgic part of my brain that makes me like it more than I probably should. This particular album is just slightly before my time, but the sound is similar to a lot of bands from the era, and "Drive" was big enough still when I was younger that it made an impression. So many of the songs have this deep trailing off guitar at the end that I think was popular at the time. I don't know, my brain is telling me this album is just ok, but my heart is saying it's good. "Drive" is definitely a banger though, no denying that. To say something nice beyond "nostalgia," I do like their incorporation of a DJ/turntablist on quite a few of the songs here. It's actually pretty a pretty nice addition, so I like that. I've talked myself into a 4; this is supposed to be fun and I had fun listening to this. Favorite song: Drive Other: Nowhere Fast, Consequence, Stellar, Clean, Battlestar Scralatchitica, I Miss You, Pardon Me
Lovely sound, some very good songs
This album is like 311 meets limp bizkit/korn with some Sugar Ray pop sensibility thrown in. Actually it's pretty successful at mixing that cocktail overall. Really the only place this record falls down is the numetal/record-scratching/etc There are some really great tracks on here and some were pretty decent hits. Drive, Pardon Me, I Miss You, Clean - I think I've heard all of those on the radio.
ah, more music i missed out in my youth! in all fairness, i wouldn't have appreciated incubus' depth in my younger years. make yourself is a metal and rock mix, but there are bits of alternative, funk, and hip hop. i was reminded of beastie boys at times, which makes sense since incubus lists them as an influence. "battlestar scralatchtica" is an instrumental that the beastie boys could have created; in fact, if i didn't know i was listening to incubus, i might have thought it was the beastie boys! and those weird electronic noises at the end of "privilege", too. "out from under" sounds like incubus' contemporary system of a down, especially but not solely because of the resist theme. based on other albums i've heard as part of this project, i hear some inspiration from alice in chains and rage against the machine. despite similarities, i do feel like incubus has their own sound here. "nowhere fast" or "drive" are too slow of songs that beastie boys or system could ever create! incubus is definitely able to mix between the harder, metal songs and their milder, alternative rock songs--and do it well. i suppose it's no accident their tame songs off this album were their singles, but gosh their harder songs absolutely slap and shouldn't be overlooked. to the reviewers who didn't give this album a chance, i will direct them to the chorus of "the warmth" that shows incubus is tender-hearted, yet still metal: "so don't let the world bring you down/not everyone here is that fucked up and cold/remember why you came, and while you're alive/experience the warmth before you grow old."
Listened with trepidation as my angsty teen self loved this album when it came out and I didn't want to hate it. I didn't, it's held up pretty well. A solid 4
Track 10 sounds like Frontier Psychiatry I wonder if one sampled the other
3.5/4
This is so 90s alt angst-cheesy but so good for what it is BT - Privilege - The Warmth - Stellar - Drive - Pardon Me
I had mixed feelings about this album when it came out. On the one hand, it sounds great and the song writing is pretty great. Also, lots of great guitar and bass sounds, which Incubus has always been great at. On the other hand, the thing I kind of loved about Incubus' two previous albums is that they sounded like a band still madly searching for their sound. Are they funk-rock, nu-metal, jazz-fusion, Faith No More born again? The answer was "all of it". I loved that, and Make Yourself seems like a zero-ing in on a more polished sound that incorporates lots of their old tricks but turned down on some of the experimentation and mania. Listening now having not listened to any Incubus in a decade or so, I was able to enjoy this album quite a bit. However, I immediately listened to S.C.I.E.N.C.E. after and still much prefer the pre-Make Yourself Incubus.
brandon boyd and the boys bring it with this one. i forgot how damn good this album is. crunchy guitars, driving bass lines, soaring vocals, and even a bit of record scratching every now and then (not normally my thing, but somehow it works). killer album, top to bottom. highlights: “privilege”, “stellar”, “make yourself”, “pardon me”.
Middle to late 90s alternative, hard rock, metal, nu metal, whatever this is, has the gift of a weird nostalgia where it is all familiar, but with a touch of regret. However, as with a lot of things that are given to nostalgia, there is little to no shame to treat as a guilty pleasure when listening by yourself. Unlike their contemporaries in the alternative/nu metal scene, this album would include a DJ and is probably why this album even made it onto the list for that little bit of eclectic-ness. Add to that Incubus taking some meaningful detours in a song like "Drive" that demonstrate that the band is little bit more than guitars and drums at a time where that was the formula for alternative/nu metal/whatever this is. This is just a good, perhaps even great album that stands out from what a lot of people felt at the time was a selling out to mediocrity. All that to say, that perhaps this album earned its place on 1001 because of how it stood out even from among its Family Values Tour contemporaries in that most people probably will not remember Incubus being a part of that, and for good reasons.
The turntable is the cowbell of the late 90's. Except I want less cowbell errr ..turntable
Metal
Not as bad as I thought it was going to be. RHCP without the hubris.
I'd say like a 3-4/5 so far, not too bad but definitely not super duper memorable. I do like some of these songs though so I'm
like a middle ground between system of a down and linkin park
Toch 3,5 ster
Underrated band due to not quite fitting into a single mold. Great vocals and guitars. Some extremely catchy songs. The record scratching is usually tasteful, but goes off the rails a little on one track.
I knew pardon me and Drive, but the rest of this album is filled with mostly great stuff too. Encapsulates the era and genre well. 4.5
Perfect late 90s/early 00s vibe before they got lame in later years. People love to shit on this album, but they're wrong.
I liked it more than I thought I would!
3.5 stars, a truly solid album, elevated to 4 stars by the turntable showcase "Battlestar Scralatchtica" with legends DJ Nu-Mark and Cut Chemist joining Kilmore.
I was WAY into this band back in the early 2000s. Both this album and Science we so damn good. Unfortunately after they parted ways with their bass player their writing style changed to be pretty tame so I stopped listening.
This album is full of highs and lows, as Incubus not only achieved their biggest radio hit single, but also had several middling tracks. This album though does show the musicianship and ability that this group can offer, even when the output is inconsistent.
Entertaining mix of funk, alternative and rock. Literally enough of everything to make it interesting and diverse but not too much to make it not as accesible
It's an interesting album because even if it is an alt rock album, it combines some artificial and electronic sound to make a kinda rap part in the album. The only problem is the duration, it can get boring at some point because even if it's rock it has some peace in the sound.
When I hear late '90s rock I sometimes wonder of there was just one drummer doing all these tracks. There is little originality except for The Warmth which piqued my curiosity. It has some great sounds and some interesting rhythmical variations. Drive isn't representative of their sound but that's no bad thing because it is a great piece of laidback pop with great harmonies on the chorus. Clean is great! That build up in the intro and the dirty bass in the verses are worth the price of admission. I wonder if they've released a remix with no scratching. I've yet to hear anything by anybody that is improved by scratching. Just grab a percussion instrument, any one, and it'll do better. Brandon Boyd has a great voice, bringing more musicality and a level of sweetness to these songs.
Good solid fun rock.
Good. Knew a couple of these songs already.
alto rockanrol
took me back to the 90's. good times.
Second to only RHCP in the genre, Incubus blends funk rock with the rising nu-metal scene, noted for its unique vocalist and use of turntables. I've listened to a few albums, and I find this to be their most original and notable release. It's coherent, distinctive, and full of bangers, including 2 of the most recognizable rock tracks of the period. Lyrics poetic with nice flow, vibing well with the funk instrumental. Also a fan of the heavy and fast grungy guitars. Few duds, good length, maybe a little too reliant on the formula. A fantastic breakthrough into the mainstream and one that I revisit every now and again. Favorites: Nowhere Fast, The Warmth, When It Comes, Drive, Pardon Me
Incubus is a guilty pleasure. I prefer Morning View, but like this album quite a bit. To me it was a new, unique sound. Whether they were nu metal or whatever isn’t important, and sometimes categorization can be a silly exercise. At least at the time it was something different and interesting. Also… Battlestar Scralatchtica 😄
Pretty good! I was a fan 💕
I can imagine getitng really into this when I was younger. It certainly ticks a lot of boxes for me and kind of feels like a commercial version of my ideal band. Keeping an open mind, I can't say I hate it, Drive and Pardon Me are good songs.
Pretty fun and funky. Hard to characterize, like the band, but solidly entertaining. Plus Battlestar Scralatchtica is absurdly good entertainment.
Surprised to really like this. The first impression was that it's just the usual metal thrashings, but it turns out to be s distinctive cut above. Good stuff.
Fantastic Album! Most of my favorite incubus songs are on this one including Drive, I Miss You, and Pardon Me but every single song felt unique in it's own right. While I didn't love every song, I could listen to this album start to finish with no complaints. I can't believe we even got this album on this list so just that gives me hope for future albums!
Great mix of heavier rock, light acoustic and even a groovy jam. Loved incorporating the turntables scratching. Favorite songs - Battlestar Scralactchtica, Drive, Pardon Me
Incubus gets a bad rep but they’re kinda sick with it. PARDON ME WHILE I BUUUUUUUURST INTOOOOOOOOOOOOO FLAMES. Come on thats just fun
One of my go-to's in high school. Re-listening now, I remember there are a handful of songs I don't like as much, but overall it still holds up for me. "Make Yourself" really hit me pretty hard this time around.
Kova. Drive usein ollu ennestään soitossa yksittäisenä biisinä, mut sehän oliki peräisin hienolta kokonaisuudelta
I'm glad Incubus is on this list. While I'm not a huge fan of the rock-band-with-a-DJ genre, I always thought Incubus got unfairly shoved in the shadows a bit. Compared to their counterparts (Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, CrazyTown, etc.) - they are, objectively - more talented and just better. They have a better vocalist with a more distinct sound, better musicians, and the lyrics are more thoughtful and poetic than, say "break somebody's face tonight" (Bizkit, L.).
This is actually pretty good. Couple pretty popular songs on there but overall a really good listen. 8/10.
Incubus is the culmination of all the 90s scenes and sounds. These musos sure knew their sound and how to make them all. The attack distortion guitar mellowed by the beefy octaved bass, the flawless mic position on the little splash symbols, the way the nasal and palate driven voice never sounds strained or as loud as it could be. Music by numbers really.
I am not familiar with the INCUBUS, but aware of the band’s existence. What little I have heard from them does not impress me, but I am familiar with some nu-metal bands so it could be an interesting listening. After listening to MAKE YOURSELF, my first impression is my usual first reaction … I was not impressed and that was to be expected. Musically and vocally, the band sounds typical to me. This type of music, Nu-metal, does not have staying power and is not catchy or different enough for me to enjoy. Usually, I give an album about three more listens to see if musically or vocally something might grow on me. I decided to give the album another listen and concentrate on the lyrics. While the lyrics are not deep, but when the vocals and lyrics are clear and in sync the songs work well and elevate my initial impression of the songs. In 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, MAKE YOURSELF is their one and only entry. Rate Artist: INCUBUS (4.0) Rate Album (Year): MAKE YOURSELF (1999 Original) (4.0)
I'd only heard a couple of songs previously, but it turns out that this album is like a direct pipeline to the turn of the millennium. When the combination of rock with turntablism was thrillingly new and Incubus thoughtfully enough delivered it via a lead singer who didn't seem fussed about keeping his shirt on. Make Yourself holds up as a good album, except for that freeform groove number which can get in the sea.
I've long loved this album! And was infatuated with the brown eyed dream boat that is Brandon Boyd for a minute! Always loved that red tattoo on his arm. Sometime near this album's release I won Incubus concert tickets from the radio. A friend & I drove a couple hrs to the show in my dad's hooptie grand marquis getting high af. They were nose bleed seats but it was fucking awesome. A MAJOR AWARD after all. GOOD TIMES INCUBUS!
Songs: Stellar, Drive, Pardon Me
by turns punky and funky
Never really listened to this band before, but this was super cool
I love this album and have a huge soft spot for this band and genuinely think they’re underrated among 90s/00s popular hard rock bands. That being said, I can’t justify giving it 5 stars, but it’s a strong 4 from me. I put two songs from this album in a lyric diary project in 12th grade 😂
Real score closer to 3.75
mildly angsty 90s rock with extra record scratches to garnish. a nice moody simmer compared to The Offspring's rambunctiousness.
This is cheesy as anything, but I have a certain amount of nostalgia for it from my late teens. I can imagine I'd be pretty nonplussed if I was hearing this for the first time... Fave track - "Drive", let's say...
I usually hate nu-metal, but this is really good and interesting album! I am surprised. The Best Songs are Drive and Warmth
4; Takes me back. Great album but not enough to make it a 5 on this list.
-Generally cool nu-metal-punk-esque stuff -I like "Make Yourself" -Cool bass in "Out from Under"
Some bangers.
I started out thinking I wasn’t going to enjoy this, but it really caught my attention. By the end I was really invested in the sound and power brought to the vocals and backing. A dope experience for sure.
Drive makes this a 3.8!
What an interesting mix of genres. Metal, punk/grunge, I think, hip-hop... Surprising amount of hip-hop.
Hadn't heard of them before which I was surprised about because they seem really popular. Enjoyed it and thought there was some nice variation across the album so I didn't get bored listening.
Solid metal with a guy that actually sings.
A combination of metal and punk-rock music with strong and loud vocals. The track «Drive» is better than the whole album (only for this reason +1 star).
Saved Prior: Drive Off Rip: Privilege, Nowhere Fast, Consequence Cutting Edge: The Warmth, Make Yourself, I Miss You Overall Notes: Actually liked this a lot. Nu-metal, or whatever this is, is a LOT more enjoyable than straight metal. I liked the tinges of hip-hop that were mixed throughout. Lost me towards the end where they got a lot more yell-y, but the first half of the album was really good.
.
Alt rock is a gamble because you can end up getting lame mainstream butt-rock more times than not; This unironically rocks. There are some cheesy production choices that are very late 90's/early 2000's (turntables in a rock album?), but I ended up enjoying the overall product. Good riffs make a good album, who knew? WHATEVER TOMORROW BRINGS, I'LL, BE, THEEERRREEEE
I never got the love for this band until listening to this album
Very smooth, but not mild.
Highlights: Stellar, Make Yourself, Drive, Pardon Me I get the impression that when Beck said "Two turntables and a Microphone" it confirmed Incubus' decision to bring on Chris Kilmore to work the gimmick into their nu metal schtick, and boom, 3 albums later it's one of the best metal albums of all time. Next up: Linkin Park.
Mon hit: Drive
The perfect mixture of late 90's alt-rock & nü-metal. I should've paid more attention to this one when it came out, but I'll surely get back more to it now that I've rediscovered it!
This album is really good! I didn't realize I liked Incubus.
Brought me back to my high school days 😊
A fantastic mix of rock(hard rock and even some metal elements), electronic and funk. This I a great album and I enjoy their music alot. From the harder "privilafe" and "Nowhere fast" (kicking off the album) to the softer "consequence" and "drive" this album rocks. I love the 'scratching' mixed in with the rock and the amazing bass lines. The singing also provides a unique feel to all the songs.
This album is kind of a guilty pleasure... I'm sure it doesn't rank amongst the most critically acclaimed, but it gave me comfort through some really rough times. I didn't find it for a couple years after it came out and I was trying to finish out my thesis while limping forward a failing marriage - despite that I can still listen to this album and it feels like a warm blanket.
Good rock album. Would listen to again
Inferior to S.C.I.E.N.C.E. and Morning View, but still holds up.
Tolerable, downright enjoyable at times. Captures the sound of the time. Pardon me and Drive are good songs, the rest are okay
DJ is superfluous, but apart from that it's a great album.
I was kinda surprised that this album was on the list, since Incubus doesn't get talked about much anymore and the late 90s/early 00s genre of rock that they belonged to isn't well regarded 20 years on. However, this is a really solid album. Incubus has a really interesting sound, and the lead singer's voice is incredible 4/5
Pivotal moment in alt rock into the 00’s. Drive is a classic
Really brings me back, great album
I've owned this album forever and only listened to bits and pieces of it. I came in with a mild bias, thanks to the jerks at Clear Channel, who only played singles from this record. It was nice to hear the likes of "Stellar", "Drive", and "Pardon Me" on my terms, but I can't say I really missed them. Weird sentence, but I can definitely get a heavier Chili Peppers vibe from this record. Lots of funk influences, mixed with some metal, and some "rapping", though I'll say Brandon Boyd has a better singing voice than Anthony Keidis (maybe). Favorite tracks: "Privilege", "Nowhere Fast", "Battlestar Scratchlactica"
I've heard this many times before, and it doesn't really get old. In fact, I get to notice little details. That being said, I was a little surprised this was on the list! Not that it's undeserving necessarily. Early Incubus is still great.
not bad
Like a bag of Doritos. Not good for me, but a decent snack
A product of its time. Some decent to good stuff on here but a lot of questionable genre blends and cringy lines and line delivery.
I just realized that I know less about this band than I thought I did. This was pretty decent in my opinion but maybe that's just because I'm used to this type of funk rock and nu-metal. "Drive" always reminds me of the movie Surf's Up, which has an absolutely killer soundtrack. Favorite track: When It Comes 3.5/5
Gets a bit too butt-rocky at times for my taste, but not the worst out there. I like the bass guitar work, helped out a lot by nice production/mixing. 7/10.
It's like Linking Park but slightly better 3/5
Probably the 90s nostalgia but was a surprisingly pleasant listen
Pretty good. Kind of a weird mix of sounds here. Favourite Track(s): Make Yourself, Drive Least Favourite Track(s): Out From Under
After some old metal I get some "nu" metal! Follows the quiet-loud formula of alt rock and has those late-90s hip hop drum beats and guitar work. "Make Yourself" doesn't really sound as heavy as I thought, almost kinda "sanitized" and commercialized (2.5-3).
It’s bad but and I’m ashamed to say I enjoyed it. It reminded me of a simpler time
So I like Incubus but I don't think I like a whole album of incubus. They are unique, distinct and different. But it kinda drags, but not because the music is dragging, just too much of the same. Individually I enjoyed the songs, but its kind of like a seven course meal if everything is the same flavors. Everything tastes good, but by course 5 you are just not as excited anymore. I love the song Drive but by the time I got there I was just kind of meh with it. It no longer felt special, it was just another one of the courses. Pardon me is pretty beautiful though...
They don’t really do much for me. Pardon Me is a pretty good song and I liked that they really pushed the energy on the last track. Overall, it feels like they want to be hard core and edgy while still being radio friendly and it comes across a little disingenuous as a result.
I get such nostalgia from this. I am surprised how well it holds up, apart from the lyrics really which are pretty angsty.
I was surprised to see Incubus show up on here. But I suppose Drive was a massive song on release. Never listened to the rest of this. Privilege is quite a bit heavier than I remember Incubus being. And the album continues being relatively heavy. But you do then get the slightly softer side in the biggest hit Drive. I dunno, they're a band that were around when I was working out my musical tastes and that should fit my tastes pretty well, but they never quite resonated with me. This album is ok, but honestly I feel like their sound is pretty dated. I will admit though, Drive is still a pretty good tune. Also Battlestar Scalatchtica is kinda weird but fun!
Some of Incubus's later material might rise to a 4, but this definitely does not. The definition of mediocre rock.
I enjoy it, but not as much to rate it 5 stars.
I remember my dad bought a DVD for a live performance of this album. We never put it in the DVD player. I don’t think he even unwrapped the plastic. The album is fine. Pretty unremarkable and very much a product of its time. Whatever.
It was fine
I would like it more if i was younger.
Very much of its time and I'm not sure how essential it is. Musically it pretty much lives between Grunge and Nu Metal, but also tries to be pop succeeding mainly on the singles, "Drive" has even become some radio classic while being the odd one out in this album. Lyrics aren't completely dumb like Limp Bizkit and other contemporaries, but also a bit shallow like your teenage diaries. It's okay, but I have no great desire to revisit.
Nostalgic
My heart wants to give this album a 5 purely for Battlestar Scralatchtica. My head wants to give this album a 3 as it is otherwise pretty boring, it's very sedate nu-metal. This is a reluctant 3, but know that if I were making a list like this, I would put this record on it just so people listen to Battlestar Scralatchtica.
3.8
Sick video for drive
This isn't the type of music for me, but it's so of it's era.
i would probably have loved this album at 14 but i am unfortunately an adult. privilege and when it comes did stand out to me, the rest was typical nu metal which i thought was fine, but nothing particularly incredible
Listening to Make Yourself completely transports me back to the late 90s, triggering a massive wave of nostalgia. It sits in a strange, polarizing sweet spot of the era, not quite as aggressively angry as Korn or Limp Bizkit, but distinctively polished with its alternative rock melodies and prominent turntable scratching. While some tracks definitely feel like dated, formulaic fillers that lean a bit too heavily on angsty, millennial cliches, the vibes underneath is undeniably tight, offering a spacey and melodic atmosphere that grounds the record. Sometimes you just want a safer version of nu metal with its growling guitars, and "Drive" is the absolute highlight for me. It is a brilliant, timeless track that completely anchors the album alongside other standout singles like "Pardon Me" and "Stellar". Even though the album stumbles through a few dull stretches and some questionable hip hop experiments, it remains a comforting, quasi-easy listening relic of its time that balances aggressive distortion with genuine pop sensibilities.
He says words so satisfyingly. It's kinda slop but I like it??
3.5
Cool, this band. I've never listened to Incubus, though it's a pretty sweet name for a band and I've heard their name being spoken in proximity to artists that I enjoy. I have very little of an idea as to what this album could be. I'm pretty sure these guys are American, so I'll rule out my initial prediction of a British indie rock album with a hushed vocal style and production. I guess that leaves a grunge-adjacent alternative rock album. Here's hoping I'm correct. Nu metal. I mean, come on. Surely I was close enough with my "grunge-adjacent alternative rock" prediction, no? I'll take my loss. I hope I'm nearing the end of the nu metal albums on this list as I've been inundated with them lately and am beginning to grow tired of this genre. Anyways, this was a respectable listen. The music has a commendable level of depth to it with some interesting influences. I particularly liked that one instrumental track which had a bit of a funk sound going on. Speaking more broadly on the album itself, the better songs of this album typically incorporate a more ambient sound and place an emphasis on the bass, though the grungy guitars carry these songs along competently as well. I can't say I cared much for the vocals, however. They're standard nu metal fare, but man if they aren't smoothed-out and impersonal. The only other things which inhibit my enjoyment of this album are that nu metal isn't exactly my speed and the sound/style of this music is quite restrictive. Other than that, I had a respectable enough time listening to this album. Book time. Nu metal's "finest hour". "Make Yourself manages to bridge the tastes of a mass market without selling out to appease a single genre." The band worked with R.E.M's producer to create an album with a more mature sound. The entry closes out by calling it a timeless album which has a more enduring appeal than its contemporaries. Wikipedia says this album had three successful singles, was well-received by critics and has received enduring acclaim. The album had modest success in the handful of Western and European countries where it charted, peaking at around ~30 - 40. It was a bit of a steady seller, however, being the 107th best-selling album of 2000 and the 90th best-selling album of 2001 in the US. Yeah, I think this is a respectable pick. It definitely transcends the image which is traditionally associated with nu metal. I cosign this inclusion.
Never been into this type of alt rock, don’t know how to put it, “not quite grunge alt rock?” Idk. Credit where its due though, the lyrics are meant to inspire and they do just that and the instrumentals are solid. Standouts are nowhere fast, the warmth, when it comes, stellar, drive and i miss you.
Pretty samey in the first half but felt it picked up after drive (which slaps)
Truly an average album from the 90's that has a few hits but is overall repetitious, dated and bland. You can't deny the greatness of "Drive" (900M listens on Spotify), and the inclusion of "Pardon Me" (305M) & slightly above average "Stellar", but then you have filler tracks like "Battlestar Scralatchitica", "Nowhere Fast", "Consequence", "When It Comes", "Clean", "Out From Under", etc. The weak outweighs the good on this one. The best surprise was "Privilege", that's a pretty solid tune. Would I ever want to hear it again, nope. I'll just crank "Drive" if I need an Incubus fix. 2.5 stars
I've always found Incubus to be a mixture of instrumentation and music that I really like, with a singer who I generally don't enjoy. There are exceptions, of course. Megalomaniac is an example of a song of theirs where it all just works. On this album, the vocals were a little grating for me overall. Not enough to ruin it, but enough for me not to want to come back to this album any time soon. Solid enough and I'm sure a lot of people will dig it, but it's just alright for me.
I guess I've listened to this kind of music too much over the course of my life. I don't think the album is bad. Actually, I think it is quite good, but I don't find it particularly interesting. It's in the 3-star range. Some songs I enjoyed: "Consequence", "Stellar", "Drive", "Clean" (probably my favourite) or "I Miss You" (just a simple song but pretty nice).
Middle of the road, non-offensive modern rock.
I was expecting it to be a bit harder. Not overly memorable
It's okay
I think they're a unique band sound. Some alt rock mixed with funk. It just doesn't do anything for me. Even the songs I already knew from the radio don't hit me well
I like this better than I thought I would. I only know this band from their radio songs, and Drive is one that I feel is overrated. But as an album, this exceeded my expectations.
Not my favourite band but it was an alright listen
I bought this album when I was 13 or 14 off the strength of the first single ("Pardon Me"). I’ve listened through it many times, but it's been a solid 25+ years. There are some great anthemic hooks on this record, and I'm sure Incubus is still a great live show (I probably wouldn't pay for a ticket though). Listening today really brought back some memories. Like I often say... in context, this made total sense and wasn't as cringy as it is now. It was a little more aggressive than 311, but funkier than a lot of the nu metal stuff happening in 1999. Listening to this was like coming up for air after being deep in a nu metal dive. Of course things like "Battlestar Scralatchtica" were a little bit out there back then and hold up even less now. Overall, I'll say this record has its moments, but I don't think I need to revisit it again as a whole. There are a lot of very negative reviews about this record, so I'll note that this record would have still loomed fairly large in the rearview mirror when this album list was compiled for the original 2005 book. I'm not totally surprised that it squeaked into the top 1001 for that edition. Why it continues to be included on the list may be a more interesting discussion, but it's probably a situation where incumbents carry more weight than new additions. "Drive" was a standout track for me before it was ever a single. As a passively suicidal kid, the lyrics found me at the right time and pushed me through some rough spots. If I was old enough at the time, I almost certainly would have gotten a tattoo inspired by this song. "The Warmth" gets an honorable mention here as well for the same reasons, but also because of how infectious that guitar riff is.
My main memory of this band is that their greatest hits CD would randomly get advertised on Nickelodeon in the middle of the day. Not sure what 9 year olds were gonna buy Incubus greatest hits but anyway. This was fine, kinda like a heavier Third Eye Blind.
Just ok
Better and less screamy than I had expected, but still not great.
mid
Make yourself remember a simple time where post grunge Incubus ruled the TRL airwaves. Some bangers and some clunkers.
First time ever listening to this. First song seemed like stock 90s sound. I recognize a couple songs, but what I really enjoyed were some of the non single tracks. Nowhere Fast, Consequence and When it Comes are a great run of tunes. Definitely liked this better than I thought I would after the first song.
Not my thing but I think I enjoyed one song!
Whenever the hit from this album, Drive, comes on the radio- I change it. He just feels really whiney. Pardon Me is a solid song. I still listen to this one when it comes on the radio and it now qualifies as Classic Rock.
Pretty nice trip down memory lane. Nice nostalgic turn of the century nu-metal with lashings of funk and hip/hop. Way more enjoyable than it probably has a right to be.
battlestar scralatchtica is possibly the most late 90's song title ever conceived
Not a bad album.
Incubus didn’t sound how I expected them to sound and I ended up mostly liking this
Many moons ago I had a flatmate that would play this album on fairly high rotation. I haven't heard it in nearly 30 years and am still indifferent to it.
I liked this but didn’t love it. Strong neutral.
🙂↕️🤘
Not nearly as bad as its contemporaries. Some hits that are forever ingrained in my millennial brain.
Incubus was a band I knew best as the band my alt rock radio station always had tickets for. But I also never remember them getting any actual airtime. Incubus kinda sounds like a distillation of nu metal and the rest of the alt landscape. I really should hate this. But I also kinda like it? It’s like a shitty pizza. It’s still pizza.
Like it 3/5
Not really as memorable as I remember them being, but a mostly harmless way to pass three-quarters of an hour, I suppose.
That was fine. I remember the radio hits. Not really my thing, but fine.
I reallyy wanted to give this a 4 because of ‘Drive’ but it lost me towards the end. Enjoyed the vibe, ‘Drive’ remains a solid hit but nothing else gave me a similar feeling.
My review for this album will certainly be clouded by nostalgia, but here it is anyway. I was a sophomore in high school when this one came out and I had it in regular rotation. There's a lot of gems on this album even if it didn't necessarily age all that great (very dated sounding overall), but the songwriting for the most part is pretty solid. Basically the pretty boys of the nu-metal scene, but barely metal in any way other than some monstrous guitars on a number of tracks, and barely "nu" other than the fact that they have a DJ in the band, but I feel like this album was intended to be a watered down version of their contemporaries so they could appeal to the more pop minded fans. I do enjoy this record, but I don't believe it belongs on this list. If Incubus was an absolutely mandatory inclusion, I might have gone with a different album. Maybe "A Crow Left of the Murder.."?
One really good song and the rest is just average. 3 stars or C+.
I like the general sound of this album. I do wish it was more dynamic. The songs that really hit for me had more range and made a change from the other tracks. Every song contains the same elements, which unifies the album, but also allowed a lot of the songs to blend together. Stellar Drive Pardon Me
Propper metal and.alternative fusion.
Roots in nu-metal I guess, I've heard of this band but never listened. This is pretty good, got some good grooves and more subtlety than a lot of their contemporaries, elements of funk and hip hop. not too onerous a listen
I think 13/14 year old me would have loved this album. It definitely had a nostalgic feel to it that just took me right back to Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2. Present-day me thinks this album was pretty mid, I didn't hate it, but it's fairly bland nu metal. Also extremely disappointed with "Battlestar Scralatchtica" as a big Battlestar Galactica fan... Low 3.
typical nu metal, not really a fan. I think what highlighted how generic this is was when my music app shuffled onto similar songs and I realised after 3 random artists I was no longer listening to the album. I wasn't bored tho so low 3
Drive the most popular single feels like an outlier on this album. The rest of the album was good but I did not enjoy any of the songs as much as drive.
Good, but not memorable
Incredibly 90s! It has some solid tracks, but honestly I'd rather listen to Deftones or Hum to scratch the itch for heavy alt 90s music. 6/10
Not my usual thing but I leaned into the vibe today.
The album cover looks like the opening credits to every super hero movie of the early 2000s.
Somehow sounded quite generic but also varied
This was a good album. It isn't my absolute favorite and I am not sure if this is "metal" but I enjoyed it. There are some classic songs here. Sometimes the "rap" and "hip hop" sections confuse me a little like the album doesn't know what it is trying to be. Liked Songs: "Privilege" , "Consequence" , "When It Comes" , "Make Yourself" , "Drive" , "Clean" , "I Miss You"
