Bolan at his best, theatric, bold, brash and bluesy. This is the sound and styling that he got famous for. It is why he is a mighty giant in the rock and roll lineage and an posthumous icon that inspires generations. Can't help at dig this sound, it always felt to me as electrific and supercharged rock music meant for the ages.

It's rock n roll baby. Doesn't get much better than this.

100 years from now, when the AI historians are boiling down what rock n' roll was so they can explain it in one sentence for efficiency, they need look no further than this album. Mark Bolan IS rock and roll, and The Slider is one of the go-to defining albums of the genre.

The Glamfather returns to defend his claim to the glitter throne against an army of satined usurpers, laying down twelve tracks of pure cosmic boogie that shimmer with electric swagger (ROCK!).

Man - T. Rex is so good.

Obra prima

Great rock album, love the vocals, I want a vinyl of this!

Fun alt rock album with some groovy songs

This album triggered a revelation within me. I have realized that I am, in fact, a Glam Rock girl. I loved every single second of this album. It was so dynamic and was great during both its peaks and valleys. There were so many layers here, and they were all done so well. So yeah... I think this is a perfect album. It's definitely my favorite Glam Rock album ever. It was both a display of serious skill AND a super fun, exciting listen. There was not a single bad song. In fact, every song was exceptional. Musical excellence in every way!

Really enjoyed this. Glam rock at its very best.

This record was so fun. At times it was borderline cheesy but never quite got there. I love the raw garage sound mixed with the more theatrical vocals and lyrics and then the fuzzy guitar solos every now and then. Some of this reminded me of My Chemical Romance and some reminded me of KG. Overall it was super solid and I'll for sure be listening to this some more along with other T. Rex records.

This is so rad. I love fabulous hazy stoner rock proto punk shoegazy glam of this record. Its kind of got everything you want. It has great glam songs that almost feel like Queen and then other moody psych songs that could be MJ Lenderman. I say this a lot, but some of my records are the ones that you can live in and hang out with. It just kind of creates a perpetual space to vibe out. I also just love how weird some of the songs get. He takes them in weird direction with vocals and guitar riffs. I will revisit this one again and often. I absolutely loved this one today.

If I get nothing else out of this list, it will be worth it for having finally listened to T. Rex. I’m sold!

LOVE T Rex

## 🎸 In-Depth Review: T. Rex's *The Slider* (1972) ### 🎭 **Context & Background** Released on July 21, 1972, *The Slider* arrived at the peak of "T. Rextasy" – the UK’s frenzied response to Marc Bolan’s glam-rock revolution. As the follow-up to the seminal *Electric Warrior* (1971), the album faced immense pressure. Recorded in Paris’s Château d’Hérouville (on Elton John’s recommendation) and Copenhagen, sessions were marked by Bolan’s anxiety, heavy drinking, and cocaine use, yet yielded 17 tracks in just four days . Produced by Tony Visconti, the album peaked at #4 in the UK and #17 in the US, bolstered by two UK #1 singles: "Telegram Sam" and "Metal Guru" . --- ### ✍️ **Lyrics: Nonsense Poetry & Hidden Vulnerability** Bolan’s lyrics oscillate between playful absurdity and startling introspection: - **Glam Wordplay**: Tracks like "Metal Guru" and "Telegram Sam" feature infectious, nonsensical refrains ("Metal Guru, is it you?") designed for sing-alongs. Bolan defended this approach: *"Repetition comes into my songs... my lyrics are so obscure they need to be hammered home"* . - **Autobiographical Glimpses**: "Spaceball Ricochet" reveals Bolan’s self-awareness (*"With my Les Paul, I know I’m small"*), while "Main Man" closes the album with melancholy: *"As a child I laughed a lot... Now it seems I cry a lot"* . - **Thematic Ambiguity**: The title track’s line *"When I’m sad, I slide"* has been interpreted as escapism through drugs, movement, or emotional detachment . #### 🎨 *Verdict*: A mix of ear candy and poetic fragments – less narrative, more mood. --- ### 🎶 **Music & Sound: Glam’s Pinnacle** *The Slider* refines T. Rex’s signature "boogie" with tighter songwriting and genre-blending: - **Glam Anthems**: "Metal Guru" merges doo-wop with proto-punk swagger, while "Telegram Sam" is a fist-pumping tribute to manager Tony Visconti . - **Blues & Hard Rock**: "Buick Mackane" (later covered by Guns N’ Roses) and "Chariot Choogle" showcase Bolan’s self-proclaimed "Zep Rex" style – heavy riffs stripped of blues clichés . - **Ballads & Diversity**: "Ballrooms of Mars" blends piano and strings for cosmic grandeur, contrasting with the vaudeville bounce of "Baby Boomerang" . - **Bolan’s Guitar**: Minimalist but impactful; treble-heavy licks ("The Slider") and raw solos ("Rabbit Fighter") prioritize groove over virtuosity . --- ### 🎛️ **Production: Visconti’s Sonic Alchemy** Visconti’s techniques elevated Bolan’s vision: - **Layered Textures**: Strings (a Bolan superstition after hits like "Get It On") and Flo & Eddie’s androgynous backing vocals create a lush, otherworldly sheen . - **Studio Innovation**: Phasing, reverb, and backwards guitars ("Rock On") heighten the album’s alien vibe. Visconti’s 2012 remaster notably enhanced spatial depth . - **Controversy**: The iconic cover photo – Bolan in a top hat – was credited to Ringo Starr but actually shot by Visconti during *Born to Boogie* filming . --- ### 🌌 **Themes: Fame, Alienation & Escapism** - **The Price of Stardom**: "Spaceball Ricochet" and "Main Man" reflect Bolan’s exhaustion amid T. Rextasy. Visconti noted: *"Marc felt this imposition of having to come up with another hit album"* . - **Otherness**: Bolan’s persona (corkscrew hair, elf-like features) felt authentically extraterrestrial compared to Bowie’s staged Ziggy Stardust . - **Escapism**: The album invites listeners into a world of "mystic ladies" and "metal gurus" – a glitter-dusted refuge from reality . --- ### 🚀 **Influence: The Glam Blueprint** *The Slider*’s legacy is monumental: - **Glam & Beyond**: Directly inspired 1970s peers (Slade, Sweet) and 1980s icons (Duran Duran, Adam Ant). Def Leppard’s 2022 album *Diamond Star Halos* nods to T. Rex’s lexicon . - **Hard Rock**: Guns N’ Roses covered "Buick Mackane" (1993), while KISS’s Paul Stanley borrowed Bolan’s stage moves . - **Enduring Relevance**: Artists from Jane’s Addiction to The Melvins have reinterpreted its tracks, affirming its cross-generational appeal . --- ### ✔️ **Pros vs. Cons** | **Pros** | **Cons** | |-----------------------------------|-----------------------------------| | **🎵 Iconic Singles**: "Metal Guru," "Telegram Sam" are glam masterpieces. | **📉 Inconsistent Lyrics**: Some tracks ("Rabbit Fighter") lean on filler wordplay . | | **🎛️ Production Genius**: Visconti’s blend of grit and glam remains influential. | **🎭 Ballad Fatigue**: Folkier tracks ("Mystic Lady") feel undercooked next to rockers . | | **🤹 Genre Fluidity**: Doo-wop, blues, and hard rock coalesce seamlessly. | **🔄 Repetition**: Boogie formulas risk saminess; *NME* called it "dangerously close to collapse" . | | **💫 Emotional Range**: From hedonism to haunting vulnerability. | **🇺🇸 US Impact**: Limited chart success despite critical praise . | --- ### 🏁 **Conclusion: The Last Great Bolan Statement** *The Slider* captures T. Rex at their zenith – a bridge between *Electric Warrior*’s breakthrough and the declining returns of later albums. Its genius lies in balancing commercial sheen with artistic risk, cementing Bolan as glam rock’s most electrifying poet. While occasionally uneven, its highs ("Buick Mackane," "Ballrooms of Mars") remain timeless, and its influence echoes through decades of rock theatrics. As Bolan himself declared: *"Bolan likes to rock now"* – and here, he truly did .

Gritty nightlife with glitter fun rock.

oh yeah

Masterpiece

Full of great riffs, swagger, and fantastic guitar tone.

Holy crap this album rocked! I didn’t know what to expect going in, I’d heard of T. Rex and knew I’d definitely heard a song from them before (It was Get It One) so I dove in. Wow, this album was just a jam from start to finish. Bit Bowie like but I honestly it’s better!

Brilliant. Thanks for reminding me about this forgotten album, which had been a major soundtrack to my teenage years. I love almost every track - and the Ballrooms of Mars is a masterpeice. The whole album's lyrics should be published and put on the GCSE syllabus. 'The cosmic sea is like a bumblebee' - yes, of course it is Marc. This album might be better than Electric Warrior and even if it isn't, it's pretty damn close. Five stars. 'One, two, and a bubbly bubbly boo boo boo...'

Just amazing. It doesn't get better than this. I'm not sure how The Velvet Underground gets criticized for being snooty or too artsy when this is basically the same.

T. Rex in the glam rock era! If this project has taught me anything about my own music taste, it's that glam rock is absolutely my jam. I enjoyed the hell out of this.

this album just oozes cool. the guitar, the swagger. it just chugs along and pretty much every song on here rips. top tier stuff

Need on vinyl

When I tell you that I am shocked by this album!!! Holy shit I was expecting something totally different, I braced myself for a metal album and was completely shocked in the best way possible. This album is so good and it will have staying power for me. Definitely need to spin this one back, incredible!

Oooooo, yeah. This one hit me just right. Cool riffs, cool guitar tones. But more mellow than the other one? It hit this nice groove of glam/heavy rock but didn’t go too over the top for me I think this might have made me a T-Rex fan.

Children of the revolution!

First listen

cracking glam-rock album from another star taken too soon

Ahead of his time. Sounds like an alternative band from the 2000s. Amazing sound.

I think electric warrior is a very good album and I don’t want to diminish that but this album is stronger Particular favourites would be… Metal guru Spaceball ricochet Telegram sam Ballrooms of mars

The kinda jam all the cool kids are listening to. Varied, clever, soulful, intricate, and downright rockin’.

Superb

Amazing album I've never listened to it before, I was only familiar with like one or two songs honestly. Very strong Hunky Dorey vibes but a little bit different too. Ballrooms of Mars could be a prime Ray Davies song. 5* I had a great time.

"The Slider" by T. Rex is a dazzling testament to the electric energy and irreverent spirit of glam rock, brimming with life and creativity. This album pulsates with infectious rhythms and vibrant melodies that capture the listener’s imagination from the very first track. Marc Bolan's charismatic vocals and flamboyant guitar work intertwine expertly with lush instrumentation, creating a soundscape that feels both exhilarating and playful. Each song is a celebration of individuality and exuberance, making "The Slider" not just an album, but an experience that radiates joy and unrestrained creativity in every note.

Amazing

Unexpectedly fantastic. I already loved the Marc Bolan that I knew from old TOTP clips, and the singles, but had never really thought about whether I'd enjoy a whole album and be able to engage properly with the songs. I loved the mix of pure rock n roll with humour, eccentricity and catchy tunes: it's frivolous, but with an underlying impact that I didn't expect. And, of course, swagger! I felt like it got better and better; so many cracking songs. The list of "influencees" on Wiki is long - I'd add Jack White to the list, as I can definitely hear T Rex in his output.

Not a bad track here. Long live Bolan, long live T. Rex

This album makes me want to put on a shit-ton of glitter, platform boots and feather boas before starting the most intense bar fight this town has ever seen.

I like this album more every time I listen to it. This time I got stuck on it and other T Rex all day. I think this is among the best glam albums I've ever heard, up there with Ziggy Stardust, Transformer, and Kimono My House. I can't get enough.

This album rules. Favorite tracks are Metal Guru, Rock On and Ballrooms Of Mars. Ballrooms Of Mars is doing David Bowie levels of awesomeness and is one of my all time favorite songs. Glad to see it on the list along with Electric Warrior

First time I've listened to a T. Rex album. Bolan brings the rock and roll swagger. Thoroughly enjoyable. I listened to some of their other music and I'll be expecting it to pop up soon also. This is the type of stuff I was hoping to get turned on to when I started this project. Solid album and highly influential.

Impossible to listen to this without tapping your foot and nodding your head. I only knew the singles previously but this is very consistent with no really bad tracks. Bolan really had it all as a front man, great riffs, singing voice and exuding pure cool. The lyrics are never boring either, mixing groovy rock and roll dance style with.. frog men and wizards? It works for me

Ballrooms of mars is an all time favorite.

Klasse!

4.5 - I really liked this. It's such a unique style and I found even though it was similar, each song was it's own thing. Really looking forward to more albums from him

Marc Bolan’s the greatest champion for the campiness of rock-n-roll. T. Rex is always a treat to my ears.

A real shame I haven't listened much of T.Rex until now. Fun as it is weird. Strangely accessible.

I wonder what Andrew Wood used to listen to...

Marc Bolan was a pop music genius and this shows why

Underrated and under appreciated 70's glam rock masterpiece. Every single song on this album is a good time. T.Rex does not get talked about enough in the canon of formative 70's rock. The oddball/talented combo is off the charts here with an eclectic mix of styles and flavours coming together to give the listener something truly unique. There's a distinct sonic thumbprint that T.Rex has that makes their songs instantly recognizable in the special way that all iconic acts have. All killer, no filler, this album rules.

This is such a fun album from one of my favourite bands The Slider sums up Marc Bolan's as an artist. its a great sound, not too serious and stunning music. glam rock at its best with some top guitar riffs ready to be borrowed. Favourite song: baby boomerang Least favourite: Album artwork: great cover

I have never listened to the entire album, so this was a real treat!

Another favorite of mine. I heard the song Slider on a Coca-Cola commercial and looked up the song. The Shins did a cover of Baby Boomerang.

Wow! Que descubrimiento. Me recuerda a Mika y a Queen en algunas canciones. En cualquier caso me encanta.

Great glam rock!

ridiculous and deeply moving, macho and completely fey, all at the same time

This T. Rex album brings me utter joy. It’s like if Bowie didn’t take himself quite so seriously.

Whenever people say "The Beatles or The Rolling Stones?" the correct answer is always "T Rex'

Great album! Will be listening to again.

I’ve really been sleeping on T. Rex, apparently. Another fantastic album from them. Didn’t vibe with this one quite as much as Electric Warrior, but it’s still really good and has some stellar songs. My favorite songs are “Metal Guru,” “Ballrooms of Mars,” and “Main Man.” Definitely going to listen to a lot more T. Rex going forward.

T.Rex is incredible.

That was unexpectedly good. I heard a couple of songs that I've heard covers of. All said I've enjoyed it enough that I am going to download the entire discography and add it to my collection

Old favourite

Love T Rex. Never heard of them before this list. It’s like finding new classics rock.

I have been effin’ my ear holes with this record for the past 30 years! My dad turned me on to this in my teens and it only gets better with age. Glam jams from a true rock god!

Great listen

Great stuff!!

Man what a fun, fun album. I wasn't very familiar with this band (I only knew Bang a Gong) but I really enjoyed this album. The songs were fun, catchy and meshed well together. I expect I'll be listening to this one a lot in the near future

Nice finding!

T.Rex is a great artist and this album stood out.

Hell yeah

I liked this.

Very good

These guys were ahead of their time! I can hear their influence in a lot of today’s rock music.

10/10 absolutely incredible bursting with talent not one second wasted

Reasonably distinct from the Anglo nonsense tradition is Anglo unhingement. Any T. Rex promises on that front are answered and then some on The Slider. Pick it up in suspiciously wet left ear sounds on the title track. Carry on with glances at track titles as appropriate. Mind-expanding in a dimension of its own. Another first-rate entry in guitar music not to think on overlong.

T. Rex is my #1 ‘three drinks and two hits’ band. When I’m the perfect level of buzzed, no other band sounds as good. This album is top to bottom great, always a blast to put on. “Metal Guru” is a gold standard start-with-a-bang opener, “Main Man” is a *chef’s kiss* mid-tempo closer and in between are 11 more riff-centric sexy as hell glam rock songs. I have a special place in my heart for “Spaceball Ricochet,” which I’ve listened to on repeat in the past. There’s something very romantic about that song to me.

FUN! That's the word that comes to mind for me when I think about this album. Such a glam rock gem. It may take precedence over "Electric Warrior" for me at this point, insofar as which album I would put on on a random Thursday. A flawlessly-produced collection of three-minute gold nuggets of pop.

Hard to believe it was made in 1972, loved it.

Wow vilken grej!

More than *Cosmic Warrior*, this is the definitive T.Rex album. Or maybe they had two of them. You have a lot of talented tunesmiths in this list, but it takes someone named Marc to... hit the mark twice. Number of albums left to review: 626 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 183 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 85 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 112

немного квирный, напомнил тома - друга этьенна

Love it! I don’t know why it reminds me to Chris Bell’s I am The Cosmos

т рех ето секс

Own this on vinyl and never get tired of it. The variety, honesty and creativity of the songs, and general grooviness make it timeless for me. Buick Mackane is a straight-up banger

A great album from a great band, T. Rex is glammy and loud as hell, but it isn't afraid to be experimental and take a lot of risks occasionally. This album, with its mix of folk, glam rock, early heavy metal and space music, is a great proof of the band's creativity.

Very good I liked how this sounds

Kanye west

El antecedente de bowie 💚

Brilliance

A band that doesn’t get enough credit for influencing so many great bands. Mark Boland had it ALL!

Classic

Very enjoyable rock n roll

Since all I've listened to before was Cosmic Dancer, I can call The Slider my first T.Rex experience. Well, the album is extremely easy to dive into. The songs are catchy, but not primitive. Actually, it feels like something I've been listening to for years. Great album!

Very cool!

Yep, that's a good one

In my mind The Slider was always a little bit weaker than Electric Warrior, but after listening to both albums I think they are equally good. Perhaps you need to know the Tyrannosaurus Rex albums or the first T.Rex album (which is also great) in order to realize this: but they are both *universally* good (not just within their own genre).

Yeah, great jams all the way through.

Love me some Marc Bolan

Five stars

Love this album

Buen álbum

sem t rex nao teria bowie nao teria nada

Hits the spot

good!! not as intense as i was expecting

I don’t think I appreciated until today quite how much Tony Visconti was involved in shaping the glam sound of the early 70s. As well as his well known collaborations with Bowie, he produced all of T. Rex’s albums including string arrangements and backing vocals as required. This album has a notably heavier rock sound - even if Metal Guru couldn’t quite be classified as heavy metal, Chariot Choogle is most definitely heading that way. The quieter tracks are probably a better showcase for Bolan’s unique and slightly fey vocals, and there are definite similarities with Bowie’s sound on the album closer Main Man. We can only wonder what sort of directions Bolan’s career might have taken if not for his tragic death in a car crash in 1978. As it is we are left with a fine collection of a songs and a haunting picture on the album cover (probably snapped by Tony Visconti rather than Ringo as the album credit has it).

Yesssss!!! Cool album.

I respect T.Rex as a foundational influence for a lot of my favorite bands, but I don't have the connection to it they did. I liked every song, but it just doesn't have the same impact on me. It's one of those “your favorite band's favorite bands” situations. That said, I enjoyed it.

Does what T.Rex does, love them

T. Rex is one of those bands that slipped through my sphere of musical awareness. Bang a Gong and 20th Century Boy might have been the only songs of theirs I'd heard. I enjoyed this muchly, though. It sounds friggin' great for a '70s record. One thing that glam rock has going for it: Big drums!

Solid. Good transmission from the 70s.

I love glam rock, and just based on the handful of songs that I know and love (Bang a Gong, of course, also Jeepster and 20th Century Boy) think T. Rex was among the best. Enjoyed this too although nothing jumped out at me the way those favorites did. I should work my way through Bolan's whole catalog.

Wasn't expecting this but I enjoyed this album immensely like it was bop after bop. Catchy riffs and tunes through and through. It sounds suprisingly fresh given its release date. Favorites: Metal Guru, Cadillac, Chariot Choogle, Thunderwing, Telegram Sam

I really have nothing to say about this album. It is good (not great) and has a cool vibe. All I was really thinking about while listening was Long Legs. This is in between a 3 and 4 for me, but I'll round up, since the album cover is cool. Low 4.

This one was a fun listen - there was a lot of great energy with the music. Sometimes I felt like things dipped into being a little weird, but it all still sounded quite fun!

i was listening to cosmic dancer last night and thought i should get more into t rex and now i got this generated. sign from the universe yay

Tight album musically. Really enjoyed these vibes

Love the sound of this album.

While The Slider may be more well known for its' album artwork, you should be aware that this album rips just as much as Electric Warrior even though it is a lot less known. Electric Warrior has Bang A Gong, The Slider has Metal Guru and plenty of other hidden bangers. I had no idea what to expect with this project as I haven't heard anyone really talk about it, and boy am I glad I came in with no expectations. I should have known it would continue the Glam Rock sound defined on Electric Warrior, but I had no idea how much tighter of a project this would be. Each song gets better and better and it never falls short of impressing me. I thought it wasted the best song upfront with Metal Guru, but there is Telegram Sam, Ballrooms Of Mars, Mystic Lady and so many other great tracks here. It really goes to show how impressive of a writer Marc Bolan is as he cranked out a whole other album of straight bangers. Out of the 3 T. Rex albums I have heard I would easily recommend them all but definitely The Slider the most. Once again I am telling y'all, don't sleep on T. Rex they are so goated!!!

Pretty cool glam act. Can hang with Bowie.

What a cool album. The singer sounds a good twenty years ahead of their time. My wife thought it was a 90s album at first listen thanks to that. The songs are really unique stuff, especially considering the year it was released. The mixing continues the unique theme. Raw acoustics, wall-to-wall reverb for the singer, dirty and distorted electric guitar riffs. It all works really well despite seeming to clash in theory. I liked the rougher, faster paced songs most, but even the slower more introspective pieces were excellent. Definitely worth checking out.

REALLY COOL ALBUM. I remember seeing this on cd in a record store and instantly thought " who names themselves T.Rex?? " but now I know that the goat does. I knew them from teenage dream - a song from Scott Pilgrim that I really enjoyed. Ever since I made that connection this album has been straight banger. Really good and will listen when it shuffles in my playlist, not sure if I would ever be feeling like just the album though. So this deserves a 4

Really nice listen. I love the guitar and the soundscape. The first few songs are really hitting.

4 out of 5. This was a good time! Hope more of their albums come up during this challenge.

Interesting that this album had none of the songs that I knew yet I enjoyed it all the same. Energy comes through in every song, and if you didn't like a song, it was over in under 3 minutes. It sent me on a pleasant afternoon of T. Rex listening.

Glam rock is my weakness. Great album nonetheless.

Pretty awesome and will re-visit Review: 8.1/10 Fave song: Mystic Lady

i absolutely loved this!! i felt so inspired to write music the second the album ended.

Little *Warrior* (8.5) ★★★★

I think this is a very good album, but for whatever reason it seems to lack some of the magic of *Electric Warrior* for me. Still, there's some pretty great stuff here. My favorites are "Telegram Sam", "Buick Mackane", and my personal favorite "Ballrooms of Mars". 4 stars.

Hell yeah. So fun.

My mom has been telling me for years that T Rex rips. I know and like their hits, but another one I’ve fully made time for. And guess what? They rip. I wanted a pure classic rock vibe in the gym this morning, and that’s what I got. A goodie. Will look for them in the record stores.

Dino-mite!

I really liked this. Can easily see how the influence of T. Rex has worked its way into alt rock over the decades and has me eager to dig a little deeper into their discography.

Second T Rex album I’m encountering on this list. Enjoyed the first. A great sound here. That early 70s glam rock. An easy listen. Mystic Lady is one song I really like early on album. It’s kind of a perfect mix of ballads and harder fun rockers. Love both sounds. This is great. Spaceball Ricochet is awesome for the slower sound on the album. Love that there’s a harder guitar on some of this, almost a heavy metal sound. Buick McClane stands out for that heavier sound. This album is just great. Great song after great song. I’m leaning a 4. It’s possible that this could be a 5, but seems to be missing that extra stand out. It’s just as good as Electric Warrior, except maybe doesn’t have a single song I like as much as Cosmic Dancer. Love it though.

Fun album. Metal Guru is a great opener and was very refreshing after listening to Steely Dan.

came in with no expectations and was honestly thrilled. some modern, interesting sounds in here, sprinkled on a sundae of solid rock n roll. there's a couple of skips but it's mostly consistent jams. favorite song is Metal Guru or Rabbit Fighter. soft 4

that was really fun! i liked that more than the other album. However it does start to get repetitive after the first half of the album a bit. Fav tracks: Metal Guru; Mystic Lady

chill rock 👍

A reecouter

metal guru, Spaceball Ricochet, ballroom of mars, main man

I’m more of a singles girl when it comes to them but this is fun and there is more variety than I expected. Grew on me on second listen. Started to get a wee bit bored towards the end and his voice starts to grate but overall a winner. 3.5

Not as good as Electric Warrior, but still a solid album.

De ä så gott

King of glam-rock, reminiscent of David Bowie. After a couple of listens, the melodies are growing on me. Some songs remind of White Stripes, though not quite as stripped down (e.g. Buick Mackane, Baby Strange).

Maybe only a high 3, but I appreciate this albums general David Bowie meets Jack White vibe. Not as good as either if those artists, but surpringly listenable.

Dig it. Not as great as Electric Warrior but definitely continues the sound.

My kind of 70s white guy rock. Who thought that making rock music fun would make it enjoyable? And 29? What a loss. Sad, sad, sad.

Loved this record! Very much in the similar art rock / edging to glam rock spheres that Bowie was living in at that time. Bangers, and even the non-singles were wonderful. Consistency is key, and this is a good example of it.

This was a really fun one. T Rex is w musician that I didn't know their name, but once we started i knew way more than I expected. I really enjoyed listening to this album.

8/10… glitter rock / pre punk / *1972

I really enjoyed this album it did everything pretty perfectly. It’s a solid rock album. Maybe wasn’t a fan of one or two songs, but they were still good.

Solid album. I liked listening to pretty much all of it. It's not 100% my kinda thing but its close enough. Just some classic/glam rock. Nothing blew me away but it was good enough to get a 4.

These are so good at White Castle.

Solid album that doesn’t have the obvious hits like the other one, but I liked it.

The Slider is the seventh album from British glam-rock band T. Rex. They began their career as "Tyrannosaurus Rex," but abbreviated their name after their first few albums. Their fifth and sixth album included a few hit singles; this album was released as the band was at the height of their popularity. The Slider is regarded as one of the classic albums of glam-rock. The band makes simple, brash, glam-rock into catchy pop songs. Great examples are both "Metal Guru" and "Telegram Sam," the two most successful singles from the album.

Never listened much to T. Rex. I know his popular songs but not more. Therefore quite impressed by this album. Like it.

Really great record by Bolan & co.

Great band from ye olde times. Bang a Gong was a hit twice!

Man that was fun. I didn’t really know these guys before the generator project

Pleasantly surprised

Their enunciation may be terrible (it took me way too long to realize they were saying "Metal Guru" and not "medagaroo") and we have have the return of the ever mysterious verb "choogle", but boy can these guys rock.

Some nice classic rock music here. Not his best album, but most of his albums are simiarily good anyways. I do like the music here, but it can feel a bit chaotic at times. Electric Warrior had more focus and some better songwriting I feel, this can sort of drown in the chaos at times. I guess that’s part of the charm of Glam as well.

I feel like Marc Bolan had a similar effect on glam, punk/post, and new wave that Buddy Holly had on rock and roll. No one would argue about the talent each artist possessed and both enjoyed periods of commercial success. Both were seen as effortlessly cool to the younger music fans of the world. Sadly, both also died in tragic accidents before they could reach the height of their powers, but left an impact on the music world that has influenced countless bands and artists. For Buddy Holly, it was horn-rimmed glasses and his hiccuping singing style. For Marc Bolan it was platform boots, glitter on his face, and some killer riffs. Either way, rock and roll ain't what it is without these two

Album #123 T. Rex: The Slider Electric Warrior 2: Electric Boogaloo. I remember listening to an interview with Marc Bolan around the time that Electric Warrior was released, where he said that the album was his attempt to appeal to the American market. It’s safe to say that he succeeded in that, creating one of the most pivotal albums of the 70s, which would define glam rock and music production; to this day, it is one of the silkiest listens you can find. The Slider was certainly an attempt to build on that success, and yet again, Bolan accomplished what he set out for. Only two tracks on this album dare to go over four minutes; this is a collection of short but sweet rock songs, each one taking enough time to establish its identity and sound, and leaving before they get dull. I feel like I could listen to T. Rex for hours without it ever feeling imposing. I will say that there are a few tracks on here that aren’t quite up to the insanely high standard that Bolan set with Electric Warrior, but that might just be because I am not as partial to the rock-and-roll-influenced tracks. Either way, this is still a wonderful follow-up to one of my favourite albums, and certainly deserves a spot on this list on its own merit. Best Tracks: Ballroom Of Mars, Metal Guru, Rabbit Fighter Worst Track: Baby Strange Score out of 10: 8.5

Really good 70s rock stuff here, most songs are really well done, vocals are good, instrumentation fits together pretty well, just very well-made stuff

Solid album overall but drags.

Solidly above average classic rock.

Dang I apparently really like T. Rex! Then again I should, given that my chosen name comes from Telegram Sam, albeit via Bauhuas. A super-fun and whimsical record. A little bit more nuanced compared to Electric Warrior, and solid all the way through.

Another great album including two popular singles. Probably would have been a bit one dimensional if all the tracks were like that, but no along comes Buick Mackane to show depth of songwriting.

There is something undeniably cool about T-Rex. That Boogie blues swagger and laid back vocals are uniquely entertaining. And there are more top songs than the singles on here; a couple of heavier ones were pleasantly unexpected. That being said, there’s something about his vocals which I struggle with for a whole album. Seeing as it’s the first proper nice day of the year, let’s be generous with a 4*.

I’m partial to a bit of glam and I liked this a lot.

niceeee good new songs, 2-3 best

Nostalgic for me from our lifelong record collection. Side A mostly, must not have flipped it often. All are pretty good minus 1 or 2.

I had never heard of T. Rex before today, but I had a feeling that I had a timeless album on my hands when I hit the play button and immediately had a hard time pinning down which era it came out in. My first thought was the indie rock revival of the 2000s (think bands like the Black Keys, the White Stripes, maybe even Arctic Monkeys), so you can probably imagine my surprise when I checked the release date and saw "1972." Needless to say, The Slider has aged quite gracefully. The songs are super fun, the mixes sound great and the songwriting still feels relevant – it's just good old rock and roll. I didn't get the sense that I was listening to the band that made "Bang a Gong (Get It On)" (a song I didn't know the lyrics of before today) until I was eight tracks in. Admittedly, I didn't feel like the music was my "thing" at first, but then I just kept enjoying it – all but five of the album's thirteen tracks ended up being highlights for me. I'd say The Slider is going to be a guilty pleasure for me in the future, but I wouldn't really have anything to feel guilty about. The music isn't just catchy rock and roll in a vacuum – T. Rex was apparently a huge influence on some of the genre's greats. Highlights: Metal Guru, Rock On, The Slider, Baby Boomerang, Buick Mackane, Telegram Sam, Ballrooms of Mars, Chariot Choogle

pretty awesome to listen to

The songs may or may not mean anything, but the change in sound throughout made this a pleasure to listen to.

These songs all basically sound like Mambo Sun, but I dig them all. Cool and laid-back, without the excess I associate with glam rock.

Fun! I can see how The Arctic Monkeys were maybe influenced by them.

#68/1001 🇬🇧🦖🎩 I had a real deep dive into TRex a few years, specifically the earlier unabreviated version which i prefer to the glam rock phase. This album didnt ever hit my radar but i did find it really enjoyable. I love Bolans vocals and Tony Visconti's production elevates the sound with strings - there is some lovely dark Cello in there i think. Best Tracks: Metal Guru, Buick Mackane, The Slider, Ballrooms of Mars.

banger

It doesn’t quite replace Electric Warrior as my favourite T Rex album but it comes very close. Every song is a delight, it’s formulaic but it never outstays its welcome and remains weird enough to be a very interesting and enjoyable listen.

I liked it. It started kind of boring, but by the 5th track, it truly caught my attention. I would give it a 3.9

Solid 70's rock! no more no less! This was a pretty good listen. I'm pretty unfamiliar with T.Rex so discovering something new was pretty cool, when the list works, it works! It feels a little samey in the back end but still fun. 4.5 if I could!

I prefer Electric Warrior to this but this is still a good one.

Did enjoy, very nice riffs and a great production. Probably would come back to it so giving a 4

Fab fab fab

I had no idea what to expect from this. I've probably seen the album cover, but I don't think I've ever listened to it or even looked too much into it, expecting it to be a hair metal record I wouldn't be too interested in. It's not that! At all! It's glam rock way more reminiscent of David Bowie or Queen which I enjoyed quite a lot! Good singing, great guitars, just a fun record.

No. 126 Amazing glam rock. Start to finish, amazing songs

Chaotic but I had a great time

Top 3 Spaceball ricochet Ballrooms of mars Main man

I love the warm atmosphere of this entire album. It was interesting to find songs that seemed to be the originals for tracks by bands I used to listen to a lot.

Love this. So many great tracks on it. Metal Guru is such a brilliant song.

I like this

This is the 50th album I’ve listened to from this website, it’s gone by quickly. I’m still not even 5% of the way through this journey, but 50 still feels significant. Going into this listen, the only T-Rex song I already know is Get It On, and it’s a good song so I’m eager to learn more of their stuff. • I feel like I have a pretty good idea of what this album’s going to be like based on Metal Guru. It’s a very classic rock sound and I like it. • Mystic Lady is really good. I love what the bass is doing • The title track has a great groove. I love the backing vocals during the chorus • Baby Boomerang is another very good song. The backing vocals in the chorus reminded me of another song, but I can’t place which • Spaceball Ricochet is a nice break from the harder rocking tracks. It’s always refreshing to hear an acoustic guitar on albums like this • The melody of Buick Mackane is so similar to Evie by Stevie Wright, it definitely can’t be a coincidence. • I like Telegram Sam a lot too, it actually reminds me of Get It On quite a bit • I love the strings in Rabbit Fighter. • Chariot Choogle turns into a very cool song in its back half. I also love its name Favourite song: Rabbit Fighter

rules 4 stars

7.5/10

Glam will never be my favorite genre, but there are no weak tracks here and it's fun and fresh throughout. Bolan's vocals are great. There's something almost relaxed feeling about this album. Like the band were so at the peak of their powers that it came effortlessness.

This is why I’m doing this project. I really enjoyed this album, so interesting to see this band was a pioneer of glam.

The only song of T. Rex I knew before today was Bang a Gong. I've never thought much of it other than it's fine, but it's not a song I really care for. I was intrigued upon listening to this today, though, hoping to discover something new and hopefully interesting. I didn't think I would, but you never know. I also decided, at about 28% completion of this project, that I'm only going to read reviews after I'm done listening to the album. I think it was helpful for a while, but I find myself disagreeing with the norm fairly frequently so I just need to focus on my own thoughts and no one else's. With that all being said, I enjoyed this record far more than expected. The lyrics were mostly silly, but some of the turns of phrase made me chuckle along with some of the name drops. Bolan definitely had a thing for the car/girl imagery which is just fine by me. I also liked some of the clear mimicking of music from the day, be it Bowie, Led Zeppelin, or even their own big hit which was basically remade into Telegram Sam. Songs that stood out for me were Rock On, Buick McCane (this really rocked), Rabbit Fighter, and Main Man. There was not a song I didn't like. I don't know if I loved this enough to be five stars, but four doesn't quite seem enough...

Not really a fan of glam rock, but I’ll make an exception for this.

First T. Rex album I've listened to (idk why it took me so long to get into them considering that I like glam rock), very enjoyable. 8/10 Favourite track: Ballroom Of Mars

Wow this was stunning, I only really knew Electric Warrior but I think I prefer this it is relentlessly catch and groovy, with those incredible riffs and harmonies.

Not bad, prefer Electric Warrior

So close to a 5 but... no, I just can't do it. It's a strong 4.

Just an all around very enjoyable album. There were some songs that sounded like some Flight B-741 Giz, and others sounded like Cage the Elephant. Really solid 4

I only really know T.Rex from PTM's All Your Light jam where they have a song in it, so no real clue what to expect. I started off thinking this was definitely a 3 and I ended up jamming. Definitely unique. I'm gonna go 4 here but it's not a high one.

Grew on me over the listen

The second T. Rex album now. This caused me to do a little more of a deep dive. Familiar with a couple songs prior, I thought this album was better than electric warrior. It flowed better, and I think the influence that this band had on so many artist later on shines more on this album. I had no idea the singer died at 29. So that makes him around 24 here? The talent is insane. Very sad. For glam rock, I can see so much lasting impact that he had on the genre, with his fingerprints all over the 80's. Ahead of his time.

Awesome sauce! This is what I was hoping would happen with this journey - I’d find an album/artist I didn’t know and end up being a new fan. And that is exactly what happened with T. Rex’s The Slider and T. Rex the band. I’m sure there are many influences for them and I won’t try to list them but I loved it all and will definitely add to my rotation! Hard to pick a fave and of course the song The Slider was excellent. But I’ll go with: Standout: Chariot Choogle 01-17-2026

Lätt lyssning. Aldrig hört talas om men det satt fint det här. Kommer absolut lyssna på mer T. Rex

8/10 Along with Electric Warrior, this is such an influential album, not just in terms of it's sound, but in its attitude. It is FUN and doesn't take its self too seriously - a central pillar of great British rock.

Every single song on this is some type of vibe. You have fun vibes, like Metal Guru (I could not stop hearing "metal guru easy chew" lol), Rock On, and Baby Strange. You have chill vibes, like Mystic Lady, Spaceball Ricochet, and Ballrooms Of Mars. You have smooth vibes like The Slicer and Baby Boomerang. Every song, all vibes. Best song: Metal Guru

Loved!! Figuring out I might like glam rock?

I really liked this album. Felt like real rock. The mix was great.

high quality early era glam. fun album.

Didn’t expect a dude names T-Rex to make a genuinely fantastic album

Pretty cool album. I really like their raw sound. I think I need to listen to more of these guys.

An infectiously fun party album with nary a mis-step. Not art of the highest order, and there is a sameness to the rhythmic and melodic approach (is Telegram Sam just a reworking of Bang a Gong?), but when a record is this much fun a lot can be forgiven.

This is #day511 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… here's to my first record of the new year and to closing out another artist, as this is my second and final T. Rex album on the list. This one was just as enjoyable as its predecessor: sleek early '70s glam rock with a strong power-pop backbone. I found myself tapping my foot more than once. This is a 4 out of 5. Looking forward to #day512.

Wasn’t familiar with this album before but it’s pretty likable. T. Rex is always a safe bet. A solid album.

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘭𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘳 is glam rock distilled into its most stylish and addictive form. Marc Bolan leans fully into swagger and melody here, shaping songs that feel effortless but unmistakably crafted. The riffs sparkle, the grooves are tight, and Bolan’s voice carries that mix of charm and sly extravagance that defines the album’s mood. It’s playful without being shallow, dreamy without losing momentum, and consistently tuneful from one track to the next. Not every moment is monumental, but the overall shine and confidence make it one of T. Rex’s most satisfying records.

Insgesamt wirkt The Slider geschlossen und zielgerichtet. Es ist kein experimentelles Album, überzeugt aber durch Konsequenz, Songwriting und eine klare ästhetische Haltung. Knappe Bewertung: Ein stilprägendes Glam-Rock-Album, das durch Reduktion und Songs überzeugt.

Great even without Jeepster

Very good 70s rock overall. Just very samey and lacks that little bit more to be perfect imo. 4/5

I gave Electric Warrior a well-deserved 5/5 so it feels unfortunate to give a lower rating to this follow up, when I enjoy the music so much and it’s so similar. I think the problem is that it IS too similar, yet it lacks some of the magic. Electric Warrior is just on a higher plane. It also feels unfortunate to be so critical of a 4/5 album. Each song sounds great and better than the many softer and/or countrified offerings from the early 70s. Enjoy!

David Bowie might have opened the door for glam rock, but T. Rex moved in and established permanent residency. It is self-indulgence at its best. Whether the songs were fully fleshed out or weave in and out of coherence there is an underlying commitment to the sound and sensationalism that brings it all home. In terms of endurance over time, maybe this wasn’t the best direction for the band, but in terms of defining, shaping, and owning the genre, the band delivers a drop the mic moment for glam!

One of my all time faves. Ballrooms of Mars? There are quite literally no better vocal cues than the shouted "ROCK!" of that song, although a few songs on this record try. I wish T. Rex and Bolan were around longer. But stars as bright as his seem destined to flame out sooner than later. I mean this album came out less than a year after Mambo Sun. His music gets me daydreaming more than any other artist I can think of.

theatrical, melancholy, richly layered... everything you might want from glam rock

4 I was raised on this and motown. . didn't affect me at all.

2 1/2 stars.

This was fine, I listened to this way more than I needed to.

it was fun

Hard to argue with the classic status of this album. Feels like a bit transitional with some older elements from Electric Warrior but also looking forward to the soul influences on Tanx and Zinc Alloy. Marc in full pomp! 4.5 *

Hard not to like this one. Amazing to hear all the other bands that copied this style. 4/5

T Rex just knows how to make music that's easy to enjoy and listen to. It's such a vibe anytime I put them on. This isn't my favourite album of theirs but I enjoyed it.

I had high hopes for this going in I did two listens in the car and it wasn't hitting. Headphones was the way to go. Great sound. T-Rex is a group I hope to circle back on after this whole thing.

Frankly, I should know more about this band... This album didn't blow me away but also it was pretty damn good.

Solid album and skews higher bc I like this era

Me lembrou no geral the Black Keys. Claro que nao podemos citar a introdução de Get it on "roubada" por Noel Gallagher em cigarettes and alcohol mas essa é uma história de outros discos kkkk. Excelente!!!

Solid Glam Rock, and songs like "Telegram Sam" and "Metal Guru" are the high points of this album, but it mostly sounds like bluesy chords with hot licks over the top, and I dig that...

Great album. None of the songs truuly stood out but there also wasn't a bad song. Good tunes. Not sure I'd really revisit this but also would enjoy it if someone put it on

Very 70s and upbeat but cool. 7/10

Enjoyed this album thoroughly. Listened to loads of one-off T-rex songs but never to an entire album. Loved this. Bolan is superb.

Solid album. Great psychedelic and glam rock.

Such an amazing record ! I had no idea that glam rock existed in early 70s! Sounds fresh, full of musical ideas, great vocal melodies, chords progressions, production etc Way ahead of its time and so underrated in my opinion. Mark Bolan RIP.

(84/100)

Liked this a lot more than I thought I would - doesn’t sound as dated as I thought it might - I enjoyed it and could get into it easily - adding to my iPod

Solid 4, fairly ahead of it's time and nice variety

I’ve listened to this one before, not as great as Electric Warrior but it’s got some timeless bangers on it. A little more hook oriented and faster paced than Electric Warrior. Almost a 5 star, but I’ll go 4 Aoty Score 82/100 My score 85/100

This absolutely KICKED ASS. 4.5 stars, but rounding down. Hope to return to it often. Great rock album.

There used to be these ads for GMC trucks that said, "Do one thing. Do it well." Bolan does one thing really, really well here - finding great grooves and just living in them, for three and a half minutes that feels like it could go on forever. This is a Coke Album in the best way.

Can’t believe this was 50 years old - sounds like it could have come out yesterday. And definitely see where the Black Keys got their sound from. None of the songs individually grabbed me but this is a great sound and I expect the songs will grow on me. Excited that there’s another T. Rex album on the list to discover also.

This was pretty good.

Wonderful album. Very simple melodies, but it was so catchy and easy to sing along to. I can't believe I haven't heard of T Rex before, but I will be listening to more of their music.

Итс гуд. Лучшая песня - Ballroom of Mars.

Day 63 Loved this, will definitely be replayed a lot 9/10 Highlights Mystic Lady Spaceball Ricochet Ballrooms of Mars

A very cool glam rock record.

This is a marginal 4 star for me. It starts with a bang and then it's hit/miss the rest of the way: Can't miss tracks: Metal Guru, Baby Boomerang, Buick McKane. Not so much: Rock On, Spaceball Ricochet, Rabbit Fighter, Chariot Choogle, Main Man. The rest.... All told: Good almost great: 3.51 stars > 4 stars

Fav: Spaceball Ricochet Least Fav: Telegram Sam At its worst it’s really catchy, loved it

I forgot that I liked T.Rex

"Metal Guru" was a really great song. This is a really fun album. It's a bouncy poppy record and I wasn't bored at any point. The song names are all short and kind of funny, which I like. It did blend together a little and I didn't track the individual songs, but I was enjoying them all. I really liked "Telegram Sam". 8/10

This is one of the best T-Rex albums, Marc Bolin’s writing and singing and great, but his guitar playing is even better

Glam rock at its glamiest

Franchement c’était vraiment cool ! Pas tout mais certain était bien cool

Lark Cafe

Super fun album and a very easy listen. Just feels like one of the great examples of rock from this era, and there were quite a few songs I would go back to. Best Track: The Slider

When I was in secondary school there was this house party. My mate Mike (he went by Myk at that time - same pronunciation, edgier spelling) was with Rachel, and her bestie Lucy was having a party for her birthday so we were all invited. Like any typical 17 year-old lad I was wankered in no time at all. The night was, rightfully, a hazy blur. Some things I do remember: I loudly announced my recent ex-girlfriend at the time had cheated on me. I told the birthday girl to "shut up and fuck off". But most importantly, there was Cat. Nobody knew his real name (or maybe I just prefer the mystery) but we all knew Cat. He had glam metal hair, smokey eyes and he played the guitar like it was an extension of his own body. His favourite band was T-Rex. I don't know how it happened, and he's well out of my league, but I snogged Kat for a grand four seconds before pulling away confused and ashamed. I'm sure I remember him saying "woah" after I broke the connection but I was too busy finding something, anything else to distract myself and forget what we'd done. Well, I still remember even today. I'm decidedly not gay and am happily married to my wife of six years. But those soft lips have me wondering "what if". Er. Albums good.

Nothing too original, but this is just a really good early 70's glam rock album. Bolan tightened his sound and added more sonic punch since "Electric Warrior" and the result, though not all that much different, is a fun, engaging listen. Sure, "Telegram Sam" has the same riff as "Get It On (Bang a Gong)," but it doesn't matter when the vibes and groove are this strong. Bolan was no Bowie, he was never that kind of shape shifter, but he knew who he was and he did it very well.

Excellent. A band at the peak of their powers.

Rock and great tunes. Good

Great, lots of fun. Early glam rock with psychedelic tendencies. Almost every track shines in its own odd way.

Classic

I love T. Rex but I've only ever listened to Electric Warrior so I was excited to check this one out. While it doesn't have as many heavy-hitters as Electric Warrior its still a lot of fun! I especially enjoyed those first 3 tracks. Favorite track: Rock On

I really liked this album, can't think too tired. 4/5

I really enjoyed this - much like Electric Warrior. The sound was unique, as were the vocals. There is lots of energy and the tracks are engaging. I listened twice through and there were some standouts - "Rock On", "Ballrooms of Mars". 4.5 but on the 4 side. Will listen again.

This is my second t Rex record and I like this one quite a bit more than the last. It doesnt have a smash hit like bang a gong but damn is it consistently great the whole way through. I like all these songs and saved quite a few. Just good stuff front to back. Not too much more to say hut listen to it its great

A certefied Banger

Glam at its best. Groovy, bluesy riffing abounds

TRex is great, although this isn't as great as EW.

Love trex

Stor glam!! Virkelig fed lyd. Kan ikke engang finde ud af om det er David Bowie coded, eller om David Bowie bare er T Rex coded

great listen, fun, enthusiastic songs with some great guitar work and just really good glam rock, i gotta get into these guys more. favourite tracks: Telegram Sam and Thunderwing

A really fun record that I should have much better than I do. Great songs and excellent guitar tones. To me it is great garage rock. No pretense - bare - fun. The coolest part is that it comes across as a bit reckless and slapped together but in reality I think it’s very honed.

Nice, Bowie-esque fun album--I was between 3 and 4 stars. I had a real T. Rex phase for a bit and this is their second best album (behind 'Electric Warrior'). The album is easy to listen to so it gets the nod up. Top tracks: "Metal Guru," "Rock On," "The Slider"

Reminds me of my childhood in the UK in the 80’s

Spaceball Ricochet a historical underrated track.
