Reviews (page 6 of 8)
Tenía grandes esperanzas en este álbum porque siempre han puesto por las nubes a Solange y yo nunca había escuchado nada suyo. Tras este primer acercamiento me he quedado algo tibio.
a clear album drivne forward by the BLM movement. Its decent R&B and i think the value added would be the personal stories told inbetween the songs but i dont think it makes it a great album from a musical standpoint
When I think of Solange, I can only think of that time I fisted Beyonce in the ass for half an hour. She exploded.
HOT TAKE: Solange's album is better than the Beyoncé album on this list. As Vincent Vega would say, that's a bold statement, one I don't actually believe as Solange doesn't quite work the hooks like Beyoncé can. Serious shades of the late Minnie Riperton here, which makes for a rather enjoyable listen. Maybe if Solange stuck to the songs and wasn't so preachy she might completely get away from her sister's shadow.
Love her voice. Quite a bit here that I really enjoyed on this rather downbeat offering, but a little too much filler to nudge it into 'repeat' territory. And those interludes - man, why spell things out like that? Show, don't tell!
It's incredibly hard for me to like an album that has a song that says "if you don't like this album, it's not for you." Seems like a participation trophy attitude.
Plenty clever and well produced but a bit slick for me
Great Afro music
Starts off promising, but I kind of lost interest after 2 or 3 songs. Not a bad R&B album by any means, but it never really grabbed me.
Interesting concept and some nice tunes, but really just floated past me.
I liked the album when it came out, and I like it now. Downtempo, extremely chill, still nicely modern-sounding. I could have done without the skits. They offer structure to the record which it probably needs but clash with the rest of the content.
Pretty good pop/R&B. Not a genre I get into personally, but I can see it being a 4*+ if you're into R&B. I've heard "Cranes in the Sky", but the rest are new. Just not my style, but it's quite good. I like the little instrumental flourishes, well produced.
Not my usual genre of music but I can appreciate it for what it is. A very good album
Non-pop RnB with highly inventive rhythm and melodic structures. Causing echoes of psych pop. Less strident and more indie voice than her sister.
A well-produced but somewhat lifeless R&B album. For all of the interludes talking about struggle and putting it into music, the actual music on this album never had the strength or emotional power to make it "real" to me.
Mjög næs chill fílingur, falleg rödd
This was pretty good! Great vocals and had a flow that worked well as music while working.
I never knew Solange til now.
Good
3/5 - Talented, but repetitive album
I enjoyed this. Sounded pretty similar to her older sis but still interesting
nothing special
I'm definitely not the target audience for this but there were some good tracks on here, if anything the second half of the album was more musically engaging than the first. If I could relate to it more lyrically I would rate it higher.
Not the kind of album I'd usually listen to but quite good
An ok listen, not too much a fan of the genre, but can see a bit of Alicia Keyes in the album. Some of the interludes made the album flow nicely, and kind of put me into a dreamlike state, and raised some still valid socio-political points (2021) However I struggled to take Solange seriously as she will always be Camille from "Bring it On: All or Nothing" to me. Best: Cranes in the Sky Worst: Mad (Feat. Lil Wayne)
Quite Enjoyed it. Bit too preachy for my taste, but enjoyed it just the same,
ooh
Pleasant enough listen. Again, not a bad album but not one I'll be reaching for any time soon.
Chill album! Flott kompanjong til koding og generell jobbing. Hyggelig med litt visdomsord mellom slagene. Likevel ikke noe jeg vil hørt på så mye ellers. Beste sanger: Don't Touch My Hair, Where Do We Go.
Bonita voz,letras crudas
Cool produziert, schönes Album
I heard her 2019 album but don't remember much about it. Somehow, I never realised she's Beyonce's sister! Anyhow, this record was surprisingly good. Lovely soft but powerful vocals. Smooth and cool contemporary R&B / neo-soul sound. Unfortunately, there are a number of things letting this down. First, shitty rap features. I love hip-hop, but hate the trend of getting rappers to chuck random verses into a pop/R&B record. And in this case... Lil Wayne? Really? Someone felt Lil Wayne is what this album was missing?? (Sadly, I think her 2019 record suffered even more from "guest spot syndrome".) Second problem is that the spoken interludes about African-American experience are really interesting, but make the album feel fragmented and bloated. Overall, the great moments on this made me long for her to make a more focused album that properly showcases her voice and aesthetic. 3.5/5
Interesting. Thought-provoking in that it made me think about how many different genres there are and how artists can be successful in genres without me ever hearing of them or hearing their songs.
Better than I remembered. I think if it was on its own, it's 4*. But as one of the best albums of all time, 🤔. Slow, jazzy, meandering. Better in headphones.
Mooie plaat, heel sereen met een fijne flow. Relaxt om te luisteren op een lome werkdag op vrijdag
Hoewel ik toe was aan iets moderns, doet dit me niet zoveel.
A very good album to listen through. Not so much actual ear worms, but just good listening.
Bit boring
I didn't know anything from Solange after Destiny Child and this is a very good album. Remembers me Alicia Keys and this is great!
Soulful and understated. Not up my alley, but could easily listen again. 3.5
Interesting album I would have never otherwise listened to. I dug the political tones of it; felt genuine. Not my favorite genre, but a good listen. I'll probably never listen to it again, but I get why it's highly regarded in the genre.
Nice voice, good production, important message, but kinda one note. If it wasn't for all the spoken interludes it would be hard to tell where one track ended and another began. Not something I'll revisit. 2.5* Rounded to 2*
A nice voice but this album is just ordinary, boring, and not very good
I was hyped to see a hip hop & soul album with female vocals in this list, but disappointment kicked in soon afterwards... The songs aren't bad, and I always love the idea of an album where songs get connected and introduced as a whole. The interludes made it a nice, more personal appraoch, but the songs themselves just didn't spark at all. Too much repetition and lack of novelty - and in the end, less than mediocre.
The coolest things about this: the interesting intro track and the interludes that often use snippets from interviews and connect most tracks seamlessly which I think is really cool. Also, great voice. Unfortunately most of the actual songs are pretty boring to my ears with barely anything happening beat-wise or intrumentation-wise. 2/5 - below average
I like the minimal arrangements and Solange can sing, but I'm not into this music.
Monotonous. Wouldn't bother with again.
This probably deserves better than simply being dismissed as "just pop music," but that's all I could really hear. I'm giving it a second listen but I'm not sure it's going to change my mind. This came and went for me without incident.
It was ok
Appreciate it, but not my speed. Didn't speak to me.
This was a long 52 minutes. And, this may be an unfair hot take, but in an album supposedly in part about female empowerment, were there a lot of male voices explaining the world?
Without making the obvious comparisons, she has a nice voice but this album just drags on and on.
zzzzzzzzzz
Oh, September 2016. Two months before “Revenge of the White Supremacy” came out and has been playing in theaters ever since. I think the cheesiness and corporatization of black empowerment in the Obama era played some part in creating the world we live in today. The little internet Nazis that have been running amok since 2016 turned into that because liberalism stopped seeming cool and young people want to be cool. This album isn’t cool. Interludes of dumb people saying dumb things isn’t cool. Boring generic bland hip hop easy listening isn’t cool. I’m not saying Solange is solely responsible for the rise of Trumpism, but she certainly didn’t help matters.
I really liked the production value on some of these tracks but honestly, this album was just exhausting to get through. So repetitive, incredibly preachy with all the interludes. Maybe it’s just how mainstream everything like this was for a decade but I really struggled to get through this one.
It’s ok. Not sure what about it stands out.
Chill
The creative force of this, a neo-soul adventure into psychedelia, and the positive, empowering messages it conveys have to be acknowledged. But it's just not a style of music for me, I'm afraid.
No private session used, but I should have. I don't like R&B.
so bland and pretentious
Some of the song themes are weighty, but some fairly trite, and musically it lacks edge. Solange’s vocals sometimes brought Sade to mind.
A couple of tunes and I was ready to stop.
Good voice, boring music, the attempts at social commentary just don’t land when juxtaposed with such dull music. A double album has to contain phenomenal music to be worth hanging around for, like Songs in the Key of Life or Blonde on Blonde, this just isn’t. Too long, too dreary. 2/5 because if I was out somewhere and this was on in the background I wouldn’t be offended by it, but I’ll never choose to listen to this again.
Solange, and thanks for all the fish! Spotify says she’s an “expectation-defying artist” which is rich since this was a real one note album. I don’t inherently have a problem with one-note, but I got really dig that note.
I liked this more than most of the soul/r&b on this list but as she said in the album, this isn’t for me
This album has had staying power for a lot of people, but I was soft on it then and softer on it now. Her voice is thin to the point of emptiness and becomes grating the more she layers it to cover for that, the production is slick but lacks the impact and spirit of its influences such as Jai Paul, Erykah Badu, D’Angelo etc. This is propped up at least in part by a parasocial cult or Knowles celebrity, I feel.
Not bad. Always hard to rate songs where I'm sure it's just that the genre isn't my thing. I'm sure if I was looking for something in this genre this would fit the bill but overall it is just okay.
I think I'll stick with Beyonce
This album is super pretentious. There’s lots of weird interludes, the beats are super boring. The artist has a really amazing voice, but she uses it sparingly, none of the songs are catchy. I really don’t think this is my kind of music.
How can you make good vocalist sound this dull. Absolutely nothing going for it.
Ok album with good execution of having a story in it. The music it self didn't really work for me and I felt it tad bit boring but it definitely wasn't bad. 2,5/5 but I'll round to 2 as I feel it wasn't quite worthy of 3.
2.3 2x youtube -- not great
Not my thing. Good voice though
It was an ok album, I felt parts got a little long but didn’t hate it.
I think this is quite well regarded. To me this production never really works, feels like a collage of layers more than a track often. Probably I am missing some musical context.
What she talks about is really important and good to hear, but overall I didn’t like the album that much. There are some great moments, but also some parts I really didn’t enjoy. 2.5/5
I swear I heard the Bulls championship song in here. Lots of interesting coming up stories. Some OK harmonies. Respect for a release looking at the list of Divas from 2016.
Music was meh but I gave her an extra star for beating up JayZ
I understand the appeal but it's really not for me.
Boring. After five tracks, the album started to get on my nerves. 2/5

This is the most recent album I've had so far. This better be good. During: ======= Six songs in now. So far all 3's or 2's. It's OK as background music. In that spirit, let's get some other stuff done whilst I listen to the rest of the album. How's about we check my personal top 10 albums of 2016 against the 1001 list. Pretty damn bad and thinks it’s special
You aren't allowed a seat, Blancmange Knowles. Fisher price 'my first r&b' ass beats
So boring and repetitiiiiiiiiiive boriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing But yes, I understand she has a good voice, but man, this was so boring, can't remember a thing and... I could easily die without this experience! 2/5 because of the voice, and that's it
This is good…is something that people who like this would say, but unfortunately this isn’t really my thing. In fairness, it had its plus points in production etc but I lost interest after the first few tracks.
4/10 Best songs: F.U.B.U., Scales As the album very clearly states: "this shit is for us." I, unfortunately, am not part of "us," which makes me conflicted about whether or not I should even be reviewing this album. Anyways! I don't really like the album (it's too downbeat, repetitive, and some parts just bash you over the head because they are oh-so meaningful, which makes me irrationally annoyed), but I do think the production is great and I wouldn't be surprised at all if people find it important and meaningful. I just find it a bit dull and obvious, too lowkey and unemotional, with pointless interludes. Not my favorite.
Nice message packed into "Fitting Room Music". Boring beyond boring. Nothing about this is remotely rememberable.
This is a strange one for me. Solange has a nice voice, even if it is relatively unremarkable. She probably is good enough to get a record deal without her famous sister, though she undoubtedly gets elevated company support via that relationship. That’s not her fault, of course, take advantage of it when you can get it. That said, this is far from a great album, certainly not worthy of inclusion on this or any other best album list. This is evidenced by this having exactly a 3 star rating across all users as of the time of this review. I can’t help but think that its inclusion is because people want to seem like they are cool by listing it. When you listen to it, really listen to it, there is nothing here that is different or special vs. what countless others could produce. I could name 100 female singers who are better than her off the top of my head. I think my problem is what she sings about and the lack of real character or pain her voice just doesn’t jive. Add in the interludes which are just dumb. If she was doing them, fine. But other people making the atatements they are, when she is getting as favorable treatment as she possibly could? It just doesn’t track at all. It all adds up to someone trying way too hard to be anything other than ordinary, which is all that she is. Not that this album is horrific. Again, she is a decent singer. I like piano based tracks but all of the playing sounds pretty homogenous and a bit sleepy. Don’t You Wait was probably my favorite on this. 2 stars.
Slow, low key R&B isn't really my thing. There are some more interesting sounding tracks on the album, but all together I wasn't really into it. The lyrics and messaging are good and will resonate with some. I'm not the target audience here. It's nice pleasant listening overall, but not anything I'd seek out. I generally hate spoken word interludes on albums as they tend to throw off the flow, and that kinda irked me here, but it actually wasn't too bad; the segues between songs were pretty well done. Hate to bring it up but it's the elephant in the room: I wonder if this album would exist without the Knowles name attached. That's all I got, 2/5.
10/02/2026 *1. rise - her singing is absolutely lovely, love the drums and bass together. piano is nice as well. 2. weary - bass is nice again. as nice as it is, it sounds like something that would play in the back of a primark... 3. interlude: the glory is in you - spoken word interludes.... ok.... *4. cranes in the sky - drums are nice in this one with the strings.... really liking this one. love her voice in the chorus. 5. interlude: dad was mad - more political now... 6. mad - liking this one but not mad about the rapping sections... her voice is so lovely <3 all of the songs are starting to get a bit samey, which isn't great this early on.... beat and piano is very 24 hour lofi study music 7. don't you wait - liking it, but would maybe like it more if it had louder moments.... her singing is very soft, would maybe stop it being so monotonous? 8. interlude: tina taught me - wonder where these clips are from... will look it up after listening. 9. don't touch my hair - like the horns in this one... not as big a fan of the sound of this one. a bit too inoffensive and mellow and a bit repetitive towards the end. *10. interlude: this moment - love the power of the horns at the start... 11. where do we go - love the piano immediately. very samesy still... 12. interlude: for us by us - 13. f.u.b.u - like the horns again. feels like the one explicit song on the album... lyrics stand out more than some of the other songs though. *14. borderline (an ode to self care) - piano and bass are reaally nice together. beat is nice. bit repetetive again... 15. interlude: i got so much magic, you can have it - 16. junie - like how all the tracks are fading into one another. still a bit boring. 17. interlude: no limits - 18. don't wish me well - low organs(?) at the start are nice. like the kindof ominous vibe. verse just started, ominous vibe has already evaporated. 19. interlude: pedestals - 20. scales - nice, but over this album at this point... 21. closing: the chosen ones - horns are nice again. as much as listening to this was nice, it felt a bit bloated and definitely fizzed out massively towards the end. the constant gentleness in her voice was lovely, but the album then lacked a lot of power, which made it feel a bit monotonous. really liked the interludes and the first and fourth tracks though!
Nicely written and recorded. Not facile pop. Borrows a load from some outstanding contemporaries without being as essential
Any sleepier and I might have passed out behind the wheel.
Not for me.
Not bad, interludes between pretty much every song create an interesting flow. Seems frontloaded maybe? Almost funny how similar her voice is to Beyonce's Deserves another listen but I know deep down that I won't
Every ear locates the line where smooth becomes boring at a slightly different place, but any album that is consistent in its pacing and spare in its production is going to open itself up to this criticism. The final determination depends on which way we turn the gem in the light to see what reflects and refracts for us, since it's often the other facets of the record that inform our decision. I appreciate this record's reserve and subtle choices, but I am not floored by it. Listening to this album 10 years after its release, I think there's a version of it that's close to what we have here but that comes in at a tight 42 mins and is sequenced to move us more. This circles back to the line of thinking between smooth/boring — when your songs are this similar, where the differences are small, the sequencing is even more critical. I think this record ultimately lets us down and jeopardizes its longevity by not being leaner and more intentional with its macro editorial decisions.
Notable for its ability to be inoffensive and yet completely unengaging in almost every regard. I get the intent and the narrative but I actually have to be interested in the music to follow along with it, and frankly I'm not.
lowkey langweilig, die themen sind aber wichtig
I can appreciate Solange has a great voice and the production on A Seat at the Table is pretty crisp. This album is not for me, I am not a fan of R&B and I don’t believe this is bad but I don’t like listening to this. There is the odd beat that draws interest but as a whole I’m bored by what’s happening, it’s not interesting and I don’t care for it. 2 stars
An understated neo-soul album with a relaxed, chill, almost dreamy vibe; while lyrics and themes are heavily grounded in reality, difficult truths, and empowerment. The vocals are the selling point, with a pretty, wispy tone and backup vocals that add really rich harmonic and melodic textures. The songs are spacious, but my problem was I didn’t consistently feel that groove deeply - the songs didn’t draw me into the pocket. That really made a lot of the songs uninteresting to me, starting to blend together as the album went on. I could see what people enjoy, and didn’t dislike it, but am unlikely to think of it much again.
I liked the interludes and thought they were more interesting than the rest of the album, which admittedly isn't saying much. "Where Do We Go" was okay and the driving beat was nice. The rest of this was bland and uninspiring. It was more exciting lyrically than musically, but I feel like she could have pushed more with the lyrics also. Her voice is pretty, but nothing spectacular.
Nice voice, ok songs, nothing stood out. Kind of dated. Kind of tired.
She has a nice voice, but there is nothing here that suggests it should be anywhere near a list like this.
Yeah but nah no really
nepotism at its finest
This sounds like Christina Aguilera on benzodiazepines. This is the most boring and restrained shit I have heard in my life.
Not bad, just not good. A bit of a yawn fest
It's fine, but it seems like the critical claim was mostly for the lyrics. Nothing on this album is as good as 'Losing You', which is a genuinely great song.
Listened to half one day and the rest another and really just never got into it. There were a couple of things I liked, mainly with the delayed guitars. Wouldn't relisten, I kept finding myself waiting for it to be over:/
This is fine, I suppose. It's tasteful, but nothing sticks. It bores me.
Great voice but I could care…not much.
If she wasn't Beyonce's sister would this album have ever been made? I'll give it to her that she wrote all the lyrics herself. That said, there were a couple of songs I enjoyed on this album, but overall for me this was a flop.
Did not enjoy this but better than some of the others I have listened to hence the 2 star rating defo would not recommend
The spoken-word passages are powerful and moving. The songs are horribly dull.
I'm not a massive fan of pop music, and less so of R 'n' B, that said, I have a formula for assessing whether an album of this style has any merit and that is to imagine what would be left to listen to if the vocals are removed... In this case, there's very little substance to the music, in fact it's barely more than a backing bedtrack; a few pops and beats. She can sing, that's not in question, but as an artistic package, this album is weak. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ Unremarkable ★★☆☆☆ (3/10) Total reviewed : 206 Already owned : 46 Purchased : 8 To buy list : 6 Nope : 146
Women on this list are so rare, so I’m really trying my hardest to like them when an album pops up, but I just can’t. There’s no way. It’s just too boring for me, too samey in places. I’m still trying to understand how this guy picks the albums. I’m not saying this woman isn’t talented just because it’s not my style. Maybe other people dig this. I’m just saying there are so many incredible women who didn’t make the list, and I just don’t get why. Like, no offense to Solange, but I’ve never heard of her (I’m not American). This is the first time I’m finding out she’s Beyoncé’s sister, who, mind you, only has one album on here (one with Destiny’s Child too, I think), while some guys have five to seven albums. Lady Gaga has none. Shakira has none. Whitney Houston has none. Cher has none. Shania Twain has none. RIHANNA HAS NONE, AND SHE IS ARTIST NUMBER SIX IN THE WHOLE FUCKING WORLD ON SPOTIFY. The list can go on for days. You don’t have to like the work of these women to recognize that they are more influential than, no kidding, 40% of this list (maybe even more, but I’m not trying to exaggerate too much). As a woman, I’m just so disappointed in this guy and his list. Barely any representation for women, for other countries, other ethnicities. It’s just British and American crap over and over and over again. I’m so fucking tired. Even the genres aren’t that diverse. The same three seem to be more prevalent on here, and I HATE IT.
Nice voice and production, but boring to me. Kinda bland R&B. 2*
Honestly cant remember a single song after listening to it
BeYAWNce
Not my thing
South London soul type music, good at what it does but not me.
Just not a fan of this vibe. I can't tell if it is "good" but I don't like it, or if it was a not good, or I just don't get it.
Not my style but a lot of talent here. 1/5 didn’t finish the album 2/5 didn’t keep the album 3/5 kept it and will listen when songs randomly show up on shuffle 4/5 kept it and will listen to it again front to back on my phone 5/5 buying the vinyl
I can appreciate this but just not for me.
Not nearly as bad as I was expecting after I visibly winced when this generated, but I would never willingly listen to this again. Quite generic.
Went into this with a more negative frame of mind since I really don't care about Beyonce or pop music, but was pleasantly surprised by it. This is probably better than anything I've heard by Beyonce, but it's still not my style of music at all.
I guess according to this list I hate soul music? Which couldn't be further from the truth really. I have heard of her before but only now learned she is Beyonce's sister, if that matters. Music is alright, production is slick as most pop records these days really so I can't increase rating based just on that. Probably 2 stars for this one, dont even care to finish listening to it.
She has a pleasant enough voice, I liked it more than the last soulless hard sell album on here by her sister. There is nothing here that makes me dislike it, but nothing of interest either, the music is so pedestrian I have no interest in listen if she has anything to say. It’s not my thing and leave it at that. 2 Star
Even without considering that I don’t usually listen to R&B, this album didn’t really appeal to me, and I didn’t find any tracks that left a lasting impression. Sorry!
Boring
Not for me.
She has a good voice, but nothing about this music drew me in. Just seemed like standard R&B singing over random noises.
Every song sounded like a chorus and a rap song, like filler. Also, how many interludes does one album need?
I obviously know who she is, but had never listened to anything by Solange. Somewhat unsurprisingly she has a lovely voice, so it hung on the instrumentation and songwriting for me. Well mostly, given I'm on record as finding interludes incredibly annoying. I still find interludes incredibly annoying. This is alright but not particularly interesting. I listened to it on a long train journey, and coupled with the gentle rocking of the train (something that always makes me a bit tired), this record really made me want a snooze. I only really perked up at one point. I am too white to type out the actual lyric, but at one point I thought she was singing "All my knickers around the world" and I had to check. Nice voice, just not for me. 2/5
mid
I’ve enjoyed some work in the past but stylistically this was just okay to me.
Laid back smooth RnB. Easy listening, but without any edges. Boring to some extend
Not seeing this as anything special in the least
Fine. A little non descript
Smooth grooving, but it felt like one song repeated with tweaked lyrics
Eh.
Very powerful message throughout but I just couldn’t get into it at all. It’s lowkey really boring
the best parts were the snippets of Minnie Ripperton stylings, and the casual harmonies that sounded like a warmup. pleasant, but not memorable
There were some nice bits in this, but it felt more like a sketchbook of demos than an album. I'm sure it was intentional, but none of the songs seemed to fit a normal structure and as such just felt like a bunch of jams on a part or 2. Interspersed with some guys saying stuff. It wasn't awful, but it didn't capture me.
OK. 2/5
She has a nice voice. Must suck for her to be compared to her sister all the time. She has a much smoother voice than Beyonce, and this album is pretty slick. Perhaps no stand-out tracks, could have done with something bombastic like Beyonce. Think she suffers from a lack of good production too, unlike Beyonce. Not great, she's no Beyonce.
I'm not the right demographic for this, but I did like the message. Nor is it my type of music stylistically, bit too soulful and RnB ish for my taste. She has a good voice though. Oh it's Beyonce's sister!.... Doesn't change anything for me 2
Mostly inoffensive.
27/1001 First listen. Before: Okay, I’ve read the wiki and reviews. Beyonce has a sister in the biz. I’ve not heard of this at all. This is jazz, soul and r&b. Historically not a good thing for me but I have an open mind. Oh and it’s a double album. Fuck me. After: Not near as bad as I was expecting. Length was not a problem either. The interludes were alright. Better than skits. This quote from The Guardian sums it up for me. "there's little punch or pop charm to the album, which boasts a surfeit of luscious textures and feisty attitudes, but a shortfall of killer melodies." 4/10
Very lyrically focused. Strong message and theme. Not my favorite
music for girls to put on makeup to
I’m pretty sure I’m not the target audience but I did not really like this album. The music seemed generic, the talking interludes were weird. Not a fan.
ok, she has a voice a bit like beyonce. Musically it was fine. played well in the background while i did work. would I rush to listen to it again? probably not.
Not my thing.
I wonder if this would still be on a list created in 2025. Parts are interesting, but overall kinda meh. I like the EP that came out before this (True) more. Blood Orange produced, if I remember correctly.
17 credited producers in addition to the artist is too many producers. Maybe that explains why, despite a compelling lyrical story to tell, the music is pleasant but goes NOWHERE.
I can picture this album being played by a lounge singer at bar of an airport hotel. It’s perfect and enjoyable background music.
I think I just don’t like R&B
Not a big fan of an album that lectures me about what I do or don't understand. But I am sure there are some out there who are.
Liked this more than expected, more than Beyonce's albums. R&B with a bit of pop sensibility. It was okay.
A bit generic, nothing special imo
Fav: F.U.B.U (Feat. The-Dream and BJ The Chicago Kid) Least Fav: Mad (Feat. Lil Wayne) Not sure what part of this sounds remotely important for listening
Was better than I expected, but an interlude nearly every other tracks is kinda dumb. Junie was a highlight, but the rest felt a little underdeveloped.
Nice but boring
11/10/2025 Nah not a fan, not great at all. Spotify listeners: 2.3 million
Heard a lot about the album but it's my first time listening to it. It's fine but way too chill for me. No songs really stood out 2/5
Not my cup of tea.
This was brutal to get through. Basically the same song for 51 minutes cut up by spoken word interludes. Being Beyoncé's sister probably had nothing to do with her getting an album, right?
Enjoyed one or two but fairly mid. Not my thing I guess
I guess you really need to be American to enjoy this sort of thing.
Musically never gonna be my thing, but some powerful messaging on there.
I can admire the thought behind it, yet still find it kinda boring.
Super generic '90's r&b into pop r&b. Influence 1. Quality 3. Hits 1. So mid 2.
Never heard of her and off the back of this I won’t be rushing to check out more of her stuff. It wasn’t bad or anything, in fact she does have quite a good voice. I just found it dull for the most part.
Soulful vocals, R&B/Hip-Hop electronic beats, piano melodies. Pleasant, but not for me.
This just falls into the I didn't really connect with this music category. Not sure I am anywhere close to the target audience.
Well, like they said on the album, this ones not for me. And that's okay! Different strokes for different folks and whatnot.
And here we are again: some totally average album gets canonized on the “1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die” list, as if my ears haven’t suffered enough. It’s perfectly fine. I’ve heard it before, liked it in the same way I like plain toast, and then never thought about it again. Just listened to the whole thing, and I probably won’t hear it again until 2034—by accident.
Her voice is pleasant but not all that great. The songs that hit like Cranes in the Sky are quite good but most of the rest I just get bored with it & want it to end The music itself is a nice music collage. Songs start to blend together. I get it, there's strong themes here & its fine. Is that the reason this is on the list? Or is it because of who her sister is? I'm not a huge Beyonce fan, the hits on the radio are fine if that's the type of music you like. I'm gonna guess that Beyonce's albums on this list are better than this. At least, One would hope. 2 By the way, that's Master P on the interludes. It was driving me nuts as to who this guy is & why we should listen to him.
p945. 2016. 2 stars. Bland Gen Z US soul. Well done of its kind, but eminently forgettable. Once heard, never remembered.
Not offensive but some of the most boring music I can think of.
There was plenty to appreciate about this album: the production quality was great; her voice is pure, the story telling in the interludes was good, and it was different from her family’s normal modus operadi. That said, I’m not sure there was anything here not offered in the 1990s by Mariah, Lauryn and the other late-century R&B artists. It’s very D’Angelo, which is great for D’Angelo fans. I struggled to maintain attention honestly. The two songs that stood out for me were Borderline feat. Q-Tip and FUBU. If this was playing I would note it, but it wouldn’t be the focus of my attention.
Solange: A Seat at the Table: Eh really not for me. Nothing really stuck out, though it wasn't awful. A lot of interludes that really don't add anything imo. Just kinda an album I guess. I don't plan on listening to anything from it again, but it wasn't awful. 5/10
There's a type of female pop singer that I just can't care about. It's that airy, insubstantial singing that has no weight. It feels inherently ephemeral. It sounds like idle thoughts whispered. This is that. It's not bad, but it's definitely not for me. I can't hum a single bar or sing a single lyric, and I started writing this seconds after the album ended. I was going to say I'd never actually heard a Solange song before, but after this, that may not be true. I may have heard her thousands of times, but I wouldn't remember it.
4/10 It came, it went. I couldn't tell you a song, but at least they are kindly separated by some interludes, as otherwise I'd struggle to know where one ends and the next comes along. It's just a meandering dullness I tolerated - how someone can be excited by it is a mystery to me, but hey, it's cool, I ain't going to like everything
Technically excellent but it never changes gear at all
1.66
Well produced neo soul/R'n'B album by Beyonce's sister who can sing nicely (her voice is similar to her sister's), though no songs stand out/nothing is really memorable on it. It's one of those albums I wonder why they are on the list.
Waaaaay too long
I don’t think I needed to listen to this
Really really love the production of this album. Listened through while working and it holds an awesome narrative thread. Otherwise just liked it! Fav Track: Cranes in the Sky
Pretty shit but not quite as shit as I expected
It’s ok I guess
Not as bad as I thought it would be. Still not good and have no plans to listen again
Not for me.
Can't overcome the boredom
Didnt really hate it but I don't think it was good by any means.
Попса да и попса. Что тут оригинального?
Nice but not for me.
Good voice, interesting sounds and production, but it didn't really pull me in.
It’s very difficult to be objective about solange. It just felt like boring R&B to me.
Too long. Not good. 2 stars is generous.
Same thing for me here as the Mariah album, she’s got a great voice but I didn’t love the songs as much. Exceptional album cover though.
This really didn't do much for me. Admittedly, it's not my cup of tea, but nothing really jumped out at me as "oh, I see why some people love this album." It was too mellow and just didn't have many hooks that I noticed.
I do enjoy this a bit more than most of what Solange's more famous sister does. But it doesn't quite connect with me musically, although I appreciate the audacity present in the lyrics (both sung and delivered as spoken word).
I wont downplay her messaging on personal, political, or racial struggles because they're all valuable and important. However, listening to these musical ingredients the way she puts them together is like eating a nutritionally complete meal in bar form. Dry, rectangular, tastes like cardboard, and just ain't the same as real food. Sure, you get everything you need from it and technically it's all you'd ever NEED to eat, but it's not satisfying or something you're looking forward to. I don't think this album deserves the two star rating I'm going to give it because it is indeed nutritionally complete, but I don't want to eat it ever again. Because it's something I'd never look forward to, like other albums I didn't like for different reasons, it gets that rating from me. I do think this artist is capable of getting a 5 star rating from me on an album because it's clear she's very talented. It just wasn't this one ⭐⭐
not bad, just kind of boring imo :,)
Rnb not my taste
I really enjoy her voice, but the tracks for me just weren't that memorable or standout.
Totally get it. Solange's got pipes for days, no doubt about that. But yeah, if you're craving that genuine, old-school R&B groove, the last 20 years on the radio can feel like a yawn. The 70s and early 80s R&B? Now that's where the soul was. Forget the cookie-cutter stuff – you want the real deal, and those decades delivered it in spades. You're talking about the masters of the groove, the legends of the vocal, the real architects of the sound.
Couple of really good tracks, I like the jazz influence hip hop used to have. Kind of monotone rapping of the lyrics, not much energy. Good album, not great.
One of those albums where I hate to rate them low because the artist is competent and clearly put in the effort... But the end result just doesn't speak to me. If I go through the album feeling bored and just wanting it to be over already, well, it clearly isn't for me.
The album has a nice mellow voice and she has a very pleasant voice. There is a bit of a 70s throw back vibe going on. Overall, it’s an ok album.
There are several genres on here that I don't enjoy and no really interesting sounds.
Meh
Evidently having a very successful big sis gets you…(insert album title) This wasn't horrible but just a little too one note for me. 2.5/5
Another twenty tenner. I would normally complain about the quality of the selections from this decade, but I'm feeling empathetic today. The 2010s really feel like a culturally stagnant decade, which in my eyes extends to the music industry. I can think of numerous albums from the 90s and noughties that are worthy of consideration for this list, yet I can think of very few tenners that I'd throw into the mix. "I See Seaweed" by The Drones was pretty cool. I'm surprised that album isn't on the list. "Purple Mountains" was also good. That's it. That's the list, buddy. One would usually chalk my inability to see the merit in anything up to miserablebitchitis, though I think there's a more sinister hand at play, that being hip-hop usurping rock music as the dominant form of musical expression. The hip-hop revolution and it's consequences have been a disaster for the rockist race. Anyways, the album. This is purely conjecture, though I feel like these "personal exploration" R&B/hip-hop concept albums were dime a dozen throughout the 2010s. "Sometimes I Might Be Introvert" is another album I have listened to which scratches this same itch. Granted, that's a 2021 album, though my point still stands. I think Kendrick was responsible for popularising this subgenre of music, particularly with "Good Kid, m.A.A.d City". It's difficult for me to say whether these albums fail to resonate due to lacking substance or because they belong to a genre of music that I don't like, though I'm inclined to believe the former. I don't understand why these albums have infinity interludes on them. They don't bookend any parts of the album or coincide with any themes, which just leads to them feeling like inconsequential wank. My experience of listening to this album was very dull overall, though fortunately the inoffensive kind of dull.
Count me among those that found this album to be musically boring. Solange is a talented vocalist with an important message, but the tempo changes very little if at all throughout the album, the songs bleed into each other for the most part, and the whole thing is just too long. I would probably feel differently if I were not an old white dude, but I just wasn’t drawn in enough by the music for me to hear most of the lyrics. The boredom factor makes this a two star album for me.
Generisk R&B som i bedste tilfælde er kedeligt.. Hun må være på denne liste pga sin søster.
Det var godt nok kedeligt og fyldt med interludes
Not a bad album but nothing for me
No
2.5 - Meh
INTERLUUUUUUUDESSSS
Gotta give it a 2 because though I didn't hate it, I didn't really like it. Quite uninteresting in terms of instrumentation (whether that's the fault of the genre or artist I'm not sure as this isn't a style that I really like). Also pretty repetitive overall Don't Touch My Hair was my favorite track (pretty good arrangement, repetitive but they used the to build and so it worked okay) and it had a nice lead in to the interlude after it. F.U.B.U had some interesting instrumentation (about the 3 min mark with some horns and off beats. Honestly, the Interludes were to me the most interesting points of the album. Some good arrangements and solid messages.
I reacted to this better than I would react to her sister, but altogether it’s just not my jam
There's some important messaging here, the production is good, and Solange has a decent voice. None of the songs really grabbed me though, and after a while it all blurs together. I was initially excited to see Q-Tip credited, but he doesn't even rap which is bizarre to me. He's only there for backing vocals, and if you weren't paying attention you wouldn't know it's him. Overall it's fine, but nothing I'd keep in rotation.
Pretty dull.
Simply not for me :)
R&B isn't my genre
Nothing memorable.
Dogshit
I don't know. I wasn't too into it but it wasn't BAD.
Not my style
Chill but oh so forgettable
She would be absolutely a nobody without her sister, and I don’t think “queen B” is all that great, either.
Nothing stood out to me that would make this a great album. Quickly became elevator music.
I’m going to tell my kids that this Beyonce’s sister…. wait she is Beyonce’s sister?! Feels a bit nepo babyish, are you a nepo baby if you use a siblings fame? Sipo baby? Sibo baby? Anyway, the messages in the album are great messages that have been repeated a thousand times by the time this album came out actually making it less impactful as it feels like a cash grab of cultural reference. The actual songs aren’t doing it any favors either. She has a fine voice but she also only has one type of singing throughout the 21 tracks. You could pick two random songs skip half way through each then combine them and you would probably think its the same song. Very very ok overall. 4/10
Truthfully this was one of the first albums. I really paid attention to the lyrics and I understand why this is on this list because if it’s influence, however, I wasn’t absolutely obsessed with the actual music part and that is completely preferential.
No one would give a shit if she wasn't Beyonce's sister
Waaaaay too many interludes.. I get the message.. I don't care much for this kind of vocals.
I'm sure there are those who enjoy this. I am not among you. Just not my vibe. I liked the bassline in the second song, but the rest of the composition took away from that one quality. Then the rest of the album was more difficult to sit through.
Musically uninspiring and thematically it's been done better by others.
Rhythm may be a dancer but not on this tiresome offering. It so slow and samey. The seat is ideal for this, clap to the left, clap to the right, so suited to a morning tv show exercise routine. It is well produced.
I know that there’s a human in there somewhere—what with drum machines and auto tune. I would be curious to know how she would do with a trio or quartet—old school-her and a microphone. The interlude with Tina Turner was “spot on” though.
I’m not sure I’m in the right mood for this. There are elements I like. But nothing is grabbing me. I don’t know if it’s me, and just my state of mind, but this really feels repetitive. A lot like the album yesterday. Maybe I’ve reached the age where new music all sounds the same to me?😂
sigh... i really tried with this one. listened to it twice all the way through but it just did not work for me. it's just so slow and uneventful. none of the songs are terribly interesting or gripping, it's just soft pop and r&b made to be played in the background of really hip hair salons. it's a shame because i liked the message of the album, but the delivery was a real nothingburger. favorites: cranes in the sky, mad
2 Stars (5/15)
Reluctantly giving this album a '2' for it's important social critiques. I imagine this is a powerful and important album for some but does nothing for me musically.
This was really really not my thing tbh
Elevated R&B, interesting but not my jam
Very very bland. The uncooked tofu of music.
Okbfor background at a dinner party
Low key minimalist modern R&B. I didn’t hate it.
I have listened to some samey sounding albums in this list so far but holy shit there were genuinely tracks in this that I thought were one in the same until I checked my phone and saw the progress bar of whatever I was listening to. The repetitiveness is really what kills this for me. it's completely competent otherwise with some well produced instrumentals in the back, which probably provided any variety this album had going for it
Scientists discover long hidden genetic ancestor of modern specimen “music for insufferable white women”
Unfortunately Solange's best performance, a live set in an elevator on 12 May 2014 featuring her brother-in-law Jay Z, was not what I had to review today. Competent vocals, competent production, competent instrumentals, etc. etc. This is a paint-by-numbers album that only exists because of nepotism. The album is repetitive, the interludes are whatever. Some of the instrumental parts here caught my ear but only for a fleeting moment. It's not a bad album, it's just boring. 1001 albums you must listen to cure your insomnia
Not my usual cup of tea but it was alright.
Actually better than I expected for 'Beyoncé's' sister, but not something I'd dig out again.
Interesting. Lovely layers and textures, nice arrangements and instruments but nothing stands out as super catchy or brilliant. nice but not sure why it's considered 'essential listening'.
I was vibing with this for a little bit... but it's just so one note and my opinion on it dropped dramatically as it went further on. I was begging for it to be over by the end. A real shame.
The songs don't stick out from one another, so they lack personality to differentiate from one another. The only thing that made itself known was how annoying the interludes were. They came off as self important pretension. Please, you grew up with money. Your Dad was a very successful Xerox sales executive. You went to private school. Yes, life is an exhausting challenge for people of all ethnicities and backgrounds, not just yours. No one is saying don't have pride in yourself. What I think people are trying to say is that it is childish to need everyone to publicly celebrate you, in order for you to feel okay about yourself. Your problem is an internal one that only you can fix, not an external one that was imposed upon you in the 21st Century. Let go of the past. Back to the music. When a lovely instrumental arrangement and performance is a bit more interesting, as in the case of "Don't You Wait", the song is let down by a vocal performance that never feels like it is ever fully unleashed, or unlocked. The songs should be driven by the vocal melody, but they never feel like they are. Perhaps some of that could have been ameliorated by just giving the vocals a bit more heat in the mix. Also perhaps it would have helped if a vocal melody began a track and the instrumental joined, rather than in reverse, which seems to be the case most of the time on A SEAT AT THE TABLE. I also think the album would have been helped by a bit more differentiation in the tempo from track to track. Everything tends come off as a bit of a ballad or fugue. It gets 2 stars for competent instrumental production and engineering.
Lyrically interesting but musically a bit wandered in places. Not sure I like this sparse style too much
My last album was Beyoncé which I thought was boring but saved by Beyoncé's talent. This one is just as boring but without the talent. (Note: I didn't realize this was her sister until after I wrote the above)
Bloated, most songs are pretty similar . Good voice. Annoying interludes. This is an opposite compliment sandwich. A compliment shit-sandwich if you will
Makes me feel like a strong black man! ✊✊
Just not my thing
Started off OK but devolved into an album that left a bad taste in my mouth because of the racial themes. Never been a fan of this artist and this really didn’t change much. First few songs had good vibes though.
Not impressed. Boring.
Not the style of music I usually listen to.
So the end result feels very flat musical, it’s is lush in production and ripe with interesting content. I just find it to be remarkably flat and cannot identify one song I would want to listen to
Easy listening. Was enjoyable to work to.
Not for me
Who even cares about this album. I couldn't even finish it. Beyonce doesn't even like this album. Hey - I really hope that there are some Tito Jackson, Lance Bass, and Jamie Lynn Spears albums on this list too! Barf.
there's very few albums that are so modern, not sure why this one is here
Just a bit boring? The melodies were nice but there was nothing here that felt like it deserved to be on the list
I didn't much care for this.
..
meh
She has a nice voice. It was an enjoyable lesson but it did kind of have a feel of one long song. If it wasn't for the voice intros, I might not have noticed we moved on.
Good message, but such a booooring delivery. Couldn't finish the album
Let's just say... Not really a fan. I was listening to this album and reading about it at the same time. The song Paper Cranes was mentioned. I thought I should listen to it but it had already played. I played it again but I didn't recognise the song even though I heard only minutes before. This album is like that. Two stars.
This was so uniterresting that halfway through I decided that I would prefer the audio from a train cab view video I was watching. And I did.
I just found this a bit boring after a while. I enjoyed some of the production. But at times it all felt too serious.
I’m trying to think of something good and to be positive, but I just can’t.
Other than the two songs I already knew I liked... It's not for me. Too many interludes, too minimal on the beat
Laid back and easy, not very interesting though. 5/10
Na
Extremely boring. It all kind of blurs together, I'm not even sure I could identify when one song ended and another began.
I remember everyone raving about this album... But I found it boring
I really wasn't a fan of this one.
I couldn't get into this album. I read about "Don't Touch My Hair" and thought it might be a good song based on it's message, but, no. Borderline (An Ode to Self Care) and Cranes in the Sky piqued my interest some. Overall I thought the songs lacked energy or hook or something. I thought she had a great voice at the beginning, but towards the end I found the high pitch fatiguing. Oh well, different tastes for different people.
