I agree with Roy’a sentiment on this being Walmart music, but I feel as if it has been the best album we have been given so far. Musically the most varied and around what I enjoy in terms of 90’s rock.

There's something special about this album. At first, I thought it was just a 2-hit wonder. "Stupid Girl" and "Only Happy When It Rains" seem different to me - or it's just the fact that I've heard it a thousand times. The rest of the album has some kind of boredom in it. Or rather "whatever" in her voice. They perform as if they don't care. That's unusual.
It's surprisingly dark and noisy and that's a compliment. It was supposed to be 4 but the more I listen the more I like it

Grunge-wave pop grown in a lab to appeal to the existing market. It feels just as false now as it did when it was released. Individually, if you strip it to the component elements, it's competent, but the moment you stick this stuff into a blender and get this album, it's messy, unfocused, cynical. Not a fan.
I adored this album at the time and was worried that it wouldn't hold up after all this time and...it kinda does? The lyrics aren't necessarily the deepest, and what at the time sounded futuristic now just sounds very 90s, but I do feel there are decent enough songs underneath it all to keep it together. While the singles (Queer, Stupid Girl, Only happy when it rains) are clearly the most immediate, some of the other tracks are surprisingly good. Downsides - the rhythms, while having multiple layers, are pretty loopy and repetitive, and some lyrics are a little "15 year oldest journal entry". That said, Shirley Manson's whole vibe does elevate it above bands like Republica that were doing similar things. Definitely worth checking out if you're not familiar.

Is this grunge? I can see this music being in a movie or show about an angsty teenage girl from the 90s or early 2000s. I am really not a big fan of this. It has musical merit and I can see why someone might like it, but not me. The instrumentation is boring and dated, and the way the lead singer sings is not enjoyable to me. This is a 2/5
-Didn’t write a BL- AL: pretty solid. Knowing there is personnel overlap with the smashing pumpkins and nirvana makes a lot of sense. While doesn’t compare to those two this was still a good listen and I enjoyed it FT: “only happy when it rains”, “stupid girl”, “milk” 3/5
In some ways, this held up better than I expected, but I think the songs get weaker as the album goes on. I think if they’d winnowed down their songs and made a 35 minute album, this might have hit me harder.

This album exceeded my expectations. I was only familiar with "Only Happy When It Rains" and "Stupid Girl" going in, and while those are two classic 90's rock songs, I expected them to be the high points on an otherwise standard 90's rock album. But no, the quality stays consistent throughout. Shirley Manson is effortlessly cool and sexy, and the music sounds fresh even now, nearly thirty years later. This is an album of well-constructed rock that proves Garbage is far from it, and should maybe even be mentioned among the best bands to come out of the 90's.
A perfect piece of ‘90s alternative rock and among the best that decade has to offer. Shirley Manson is full voiced and fierce and the band behind her more than up to the task of matching her kinetic energy.

This record hits about the same as it did in the 90's, which is just a solid "s'alright". I appreciate a lot of what's going on on this album, but it's not music that really wows me and I don't think I've ever really chosen to listen to a Garbage album.

Okay, Garbage are actually pretty good? I only knew the hits, but there’s some good stuff here, a nice mix between grunge, trip hop and even touches of riot girl. Good on ya, gang. C+, lingering into B territory

Serious 90s nostalgia! Love it!
For a brief moment, Garbage were everything and Shirley Manson ruled all she saw. But, in hindsight, they lacked that magical ingredient which would grant them longevity. Their sound was a slightly contrived, by-the-numbers US-alt-rock which got credibility within the Britpop milieu due to Manson. Always radio friendly, it was fun while it lasted.

I was a fan of Garbage before this as they exude the classic alternative 90’s sound. Three of their big hits are on this one and it really made me reminisce. Very cool

Definitely not a garbage album! Really solid production, and a lot of the sounds are familiar in the sense of the influence that this album had.

I listened to this album a lot in high school. I enjoyed how each song was varied in genre elements, such as hip hop vs rock, etc. Listened to it again today and my opinion on it hasn't changed much, the songs are still good. Granted it is pretty easy to like, but that's besides the point. I do have to say the album artwork leaves something to be desired, since I think they could've made some sick art, based on the overall, "edgy" style of the album. That's just me though. I do think the color pink can be cool for a rock album, I just think they could go a step further with the imagery. Despite my ramblings I went with 4/5 stars because while it is enjoyable and all that it's 90's rock album and it's not perfect.

Some good tunes, not the biggest fan of the sound as it doesn't do much for me emotionally. Sounds dated. But since I gave Bob Marley a 3 and in hindsight absolutely loathed the album this gets 4.

I feel like this album was a lot easier to love back in the 90's, much of the soundscape seems focused on that patented 90's 'tude. By the end of the album I was able to get into the groove a bit, but it seems to just end abruptly on the track "milk"

I'm very familiar with Version 2.0 and liked it a lot when it came out. I've never really listened to this first Garbage album. Overall this was a disappointment. I think Queer and Stupid Girl are the only songs that have a timeless quality and still sound great. This would have been (and was) a great mid 90s pop album, but today it sounds a little bland and forced. Just for reference, I listened to 2.0 again (it's gotta be 20 years) and it also has diminished in my ears. Version 2.0 is still better than this one though.

I enjoyed the vibe of this one and the music was good as well. I liked her voice. I think it fits pretty well for this style of music. Some of the instrumentation was pretty cool too and kept my attention. My favourite songs were Queer, As Heaven Is Wide, and Stupid Girl.

This album has a few iconic hits and I enjoyed listening to it. Took me back to 1995.
One song seems to borrow a little bit from The Beatles' 'No Reply', and the last track is a lovely bunch of layered mellotron. I don't remember much else except a lot of yellin' about heaven.
Didn't know Garbage outside of a few songs, left feeling satisfied Love Manson's vocals in this album And while the production sounds incredibly mid-90s, it's also idiosyncratic and not easily comparable to other acts of this time. I've heard "Stupid Girl" before but only now realized they sampled the drums in The Clash's "Train in Vain" HL: "Not My Idea", "Stupid Girl", "Milk", "Queer"
3/5. A pretty solid album with some unique songs and catchy ones. Will maybe come back to this one at a later time.
Garbage is great. I have long hated "Only Happy When It Rains", and to my family I will continue to pretend like I do. But I am man enough to admit that it is actually a good song and I understand the sentiment a lot more at this point in my life. "Stupid Girl" is easily my favorite Garbage song. It is just a really good album.

I think this album was innovative in the sound and recording style, as it mixed a lot of styles together. Some really good rock songs on this album and I think this is an album that must be heard just for the sound and the fact there are some great songs. Garbage is an underrated band in how many hits they had and the techno-rock/pop sound.
This is an easy 5 stars for me. This album is great from start to finish.

Can’t quite describe them by their namesake but not a memorable album. Has PJ Harvey vibes with some of the electronic influence of the late 90s, and a decent production, but just not a collection of impactful songs. The fadeouts take too long as well making the album 10 minutes longer than necessary.

I never really got why this album was so well regarded. I always wanted to like them because as a pre-teen Shirley Manson certainly caught my eye; but the singles were all "meh" and upon hearing the non-singles I find them to be "meh" as well. No beautiful front woman can salvage that. The next album had some better singles, not sure if the whole ehing is good or not though and probably never will know.
I loved it at the time. Now I love about half of it. The other half is a wee bit overproduced and not as exciting. Queer, Stupid Girl and Milk are amazing. Some of the other stuff does less, bit that's okay.
My first reaction to seeing this album pop up on the 1001 site was to try and lower my expectations. I haven't listened much to Garbage in the past, and most of my friends just plain don't like them. It turns out this is a pretty good album ... three or four songs are definitely made for radio, but some of the others -- Supervixen, Queer, As Heaven is Wide -- are worth replaying.

Garbage do music good, but like so many before and after them there are too many fluff pieces in between the really good tracks. P.S. I also don't consider this one their best album.
One that I surprisingly didn't listen to outside the hits on Saturday morning music shows or outright own since I loved there next two albums, I'll put that down to being a stupid teenager as it has a very 90's understated cool about it that I would have eaten up back then and still enjoy today.

It isn't garbage, but it is a record that is musically quite minimalistic and not really memorable. It sounds a bit like dreampop/alter rock but in fact it is just a pop record. As I said it isn't very bad but not really great either.

Very nice of them to name track 8 after Evelyn. The angst of this album made me want to burn my neighbors structure down. Some hits towards the beginning but trailed off at the end for me.

A bit slick for me and the singles didn’t have the impact I seemed to remember them having. Kinda average, not an album someone must hear.
I was excited to see this album come up, its been a favorite since it was released. I enjoy the overall production on it, taking the distortion of grunge but putting putting some clear edges on it made for a very distinct sound at the time if that makes sense, and there is enough going on with layers of instruments & vocals to really keep my ears interested. Great hooks throughout - like the bassy-synth line on "As Heaven is Wide". I never heard the Shirley Manson / Beth Gibbons comparison before - while they both went in a 'cool' direction, I think Shirley's delivery is much more aggressive and she's definitely a captivating front woman. 4/5.
Yeah... I love this album. I wouldn't say it's the greatest album of the 90's, but I give it a solid 4/5. I hadn't listened to it in a while and I enjoyed getting to revisit it today.
My first time hearing Garbage outside of "Stupid Girl" a few times. A pretty decent listen overall.
"Vig explained that as in his opinion 'the most exciting bands are those who incorporate all those elements of punk, funk, techno, hip hop, etc.' Garbage would attempt to do the same and 'take those influences and make them work in the context of a pop song.'" That is from the wikipedia article on Garbage. You guys know that I'm not a big fan of the "genre" of "grunge." Not, mind you, that I dislike Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, etc. I think the genre is some stupid marketing ploy to convince people that this disparate music that came from a scene is somehow linked by a unique sound which is utterly preposterous bullshit. That being said, Garbage is a record that is "grunge." It's a pop record with bandmates made of a production team that was en vogue and very instrumental to that scene's rise. They got bored, started dicking around making remixes and then said shit, we should be a band. We can take all these different sounds we love and combine them into a pop behemoth. Over the years, there have been many disparaging remarks from many of the type of folks who enjoy this band's music about bands like Coldplay and Muse being corporate entities playing to the lowest denominator. I've always found that to be a particularly weird thing to say of a band. Certainly, there have been corporately produced bands throughout the years, The Monkees and NSYNC immediately come to mind. Not to say that these bands were not talented, hell Neil Young auditioned to be a Monkee and in an alternative reality, he made it and the course of history and music is very different in that timeline. We all know that Justin Timberlake is a very talented musician as well. But to say these modern bands that made it big were somehow created and to use that as a way of demeaning their fans and music was just odd to me. Garbage's record has some undeniable hits. Stupid Girl, Queer, Vow... they're good pop songs. Very of their moment and time. Hell production wise, they might even be a bit cutting edge. The album does take the sonics of the burgeoning Trip Hop scene of the time (Portishead, Massive Attack) and brings it to the alternative scene. It's all very marketable and pretty much manufactured that way. This is a band of producers who found a unique singer who was otherwise failing and gave her a platform of polished sounds of the times. There is nothing inherently wrong with that. If you like it, you like it. It is what it is. There is nothing even bad about this record, you could even point out several things in this write up that show this album deserves to be on this list. It is an album of its time, it kind of sums up the total of the hip pop music scene of the mid 90s and hell, that's important in and of itself. As a long time consumer of critical writing, I know that a lot of people look at the score before they read or decide to read a review and if you've done that, you probably wonder why the score seems so discordant to the words written here. The thing is, it is completely a record of the moment, not just in the sound presented as a snapshot of the totality of music at the time it was released, but in that it is fleeting and ultimately unmemorable. Moments after even Stupid Girl plays, it fleets from the mind. I think the fervent fans must have been so enamored with the lush sound that they played it on repeat by pressing that magic button on their discman until it did become the earworm it so desperately wants to be. None of it makes any mark on me. Just as Spooner and Anglefish ultimately did not make a mark on music other than being previous projects by the two biggest talents involved in this. Manson is a capable singer, who desperately wants to be a Beth Gibbons but beyond her striking looks, doesn't find the sound or content to compete. Vig is a producer of some talent. Love him or hate him, he had his finger in the pulse of the music of this time - maybe so much that he made a record that showed how fleeting that actual pulse is. It's remarkable that he did get to work with bands who did make remarkable records under his watch and he even gave them a little of his own thing to help define a sound, an alternative to the pop rock, glam metal, glossy r n b, etc. He helped make Punk poppy. Which is a double edged sword, good and bad. The music was brought to the masses and changed everything much for the better before the internet came along to emancipate the populace from their corporate music industry shackles. Ultimately, this is the sound of that freedom and maybe that's why it doesn't make the impression that it should. It's an important record that five hundred years from now (assuming man has not destroyed itself) will not be remembered. Utlimately, Garbage, Manson, and Vig will be footnotes to musical history much like Antonio Salieri.
I don't remember 'I'm Only Happy When It Rains' sounding like this, perhaps I remembered a completely different song?! I heard that if you put the CD case down on any surface, even the most perfectly flat surface known to man, it would slide off because the production on this is so slick. (I made that up) 'Not My Idea' is a terrible song. 'Stupid Girl' sounds like I remember. 'As Heaven Is Wide' and 'Stupid Girl' are alright, everything else is fairly forgettable, except 'Not My Idea' which is fucking awful and something I imagine everyone involved with the band says whenever they hear the song again. 2 / 5 stars.
'Doomy' alt rock shifts from hints of grunge to more mainstream rock. Elements of more dance/repetitive sounds mix with sharp guitarwork. Standout is the catchy "Stupid Girl."

Whoever named this album deserves an award!!!! This has to only be on the list bc it’s one of the best named albums compared to whats put on the music set. This music was made for girls who say they’re not like other girls but at the end of the day they are. They all get Starbucks, wear uggs, and then stop talking to you for a month while you’re dating and then eventually break up with you because they’re cheating on you with an accounting major who looks like a thumb. And then to cap it all off they’ll get in a relationship the second it hits midnight on your birthday and have the audacity to text you like 20 minutes later saying “happy birthday”. Or so I’ve heard that’s the stereotype of basic bitches

Initially, it sounds like most other alt rock albums of the 90s. Its very good musically and i enjoy the vocal quality. Maybe this only sounds generic because ive heard so much alt rock from the 90s and early 00’s that were influenced by the early/mid 90s alt scene… perhaps this was some new shit at the time that took people by surprise, but listening now, its not surprising me. It is good though, i enjoy it as it fits into a genre ive been surrounded by my whole life. I think its hard to justify why this is one of the albums on this list, but again i think its because ive been desensitized to alt rock in such a way that i enjoy it almost by default that i cant even recognize when an alt rock band has changed the game or not. A Stroke of Luck is a vibe and a half. Stupid girl is a little long and repetitive. I am boppin to this record ngl. I enjoy this record quite a bit, theres many alt rock bands, many women-led, that i can clearly hear Garbage’s influence on. I still dont believe it is quite suited for this list, though… Is this an album i would buy in vinyl? Yeah probably. Would rate 3.75/5 if possible, but i lean toward 4 more
Really kind of the lounge music of 90’s grunge/punk isn’t it? Overall I believe this album has a solid vibe. While there’s nothing that takes away from the project, there’s also nothing that puts it over the top. A very neutral listening experience from my point of view. I’m not afraid to say that the singles off the record “Only Happy When It Rains” and “Stupid Girl” carry the project. They are easily the two most identifiable tracks on the album, and also the best. Everything else seems like it was written with the same formula and provided Shake and Bake Pork Chop vibes: was fine to listen to once, but I wouldn’t be thrilled to experience it again.
Another one that takes me back to high school. Flashbacks to 107.7 The End cranking from the boom box while I cooked pizzas in Paisano's. Was never one of those bands I sought out but when they're on they're enjoyable.

If I could choose anyone in the world to have the same singing voice as, I would make sure that Shirley Manson is on the list. I've always loved her low, raspy voice that reeked of rebellion. This record is just that too. Rebellious, edgy, dark, and sexy. It's '90s alt rock with more teeth. Also - had no idea that Butch Vig was the drummer of Garbage this whole time. A powerhouse band, no wonder. Standouts are Stupid Girl, Only Happy When It Rains, A Stroke of Luck, Dog New Tricks, and Milk.

Garbage was one of those bands that I never paid much attention to. I was only ever aware of their singles. The only song I recognised by name before listening to the album was ‘Stupid Girl’. So I honestly didn’t know what to expect. The album is an interesting mix of pop, rock and electronic. Overall it’s a decent debut album, but I did find it somewhat repetitive. I’m sure my opinion of the album will change after a few listens. My stand out tracks were ‘Queer’, ‘A Stroke of Luck’ and ‘Milk’. 3.5 stars
Anticipated, well, garbage... Turned out to be a delightful listen. Great rocker from female led group.
Now we're talking. This is one of my favorite albums of all time. A full 51 minutes of nonstop bangers. There's so many different genres thrown into this thing that you'd think the end product would be an unfocused mess, but every single song lands, is distinct from one another and nothing feels out of place or boring. Okay, maybe a part of that is my nostalgia talking, but this album is definitely not garbage (world's most original joke). The best songs are "Supervixen", "Queer", "Only Happy When It Rains", "Stupid Girl", "Milk". Can't narrow it down more than that.
Garbage is one of those inexplicable holes in my music collection; I don't own so much as a single mp3 of theirs, which is just bizarre. I really need to do something about that.

Garbage was probably one of the first female led grunge rock bands I was introduced to growing up, and it's always so refreshing to hear a female singer in a grunge band. Their self-titled debut is a solid mix of pop/punk fundamentals, all pulled apart and put back together, finished off with the grittier vocals of Shirley Manson, show that angst with some direction in the right hands is a winning combination. Good album. I like the vibes, but a lot if the compositions outside of the singles are pretty forgettable.
Well, if the artist doesn't sum this up enough, then the album title does. LOL. This actually wasn't terrible, but it did feel like all the songs were the same.
just kind of boring
So much better than anything Courtney Love or Hole ever did. But the media didn't throw hosannas at Shirley Manson, and saved them all for Courtney for whatever reason. This album is begging to be rediscovered. Maybe the comparison to Love and Hole isn't appropriate. The more apt link is to Chrissie Hynde and The Pretenders.

I hadn’t listened to this album in ages. I like it a lot. It’s not a favourite of mine but there are several standout tracks here. Truly an excellent example of 90s angst rock.

At the time I really liked the record, it outlived its stay very quickly though. Catchy yes ..but something is missing. Lyrics are silly for most of the time - I am only happens when it rains (boeie) - even though they got nice references (e.g. to the Jesus & Mary Chain). But it is not that. I will still give it 4 stars for being so catchy, but it is a bit too calculated. I listened to the 20th Anniversary and liked the extra tracks more. The Vic Chesnutt cover is great. The Nelly Hooper remix of no1 crush is so much better than the original - it somehow gets it right and adds the missing element. Original album: 3.5 (best song: Stupid Girl - probably because it is the Clash) 20th anniversary: 4

A fair, solid, fuzzy 90s album that sounds not quite like anything else, without feeling especially unique. Some of the songs are recognisable, the filler tracks are pleasantly traversable. A fair go.

Today's happy discovery is that of polished rock that tries to be coy about its pop credentials. I'm not sure how much of an ingredient that coyness is in comparison to the trip-hop stylings of the band's opening salvo. The only way to find out is in.

My knowledge of Garbage was from the James Bond song for The World is Not Enough, one of my favourite films as an 8 year old whipper-snapper. The glitchy, industrial production tickled my hustle bones, but I felt like it got less enjoyable on repeated listens

I'm not entirely sure I have spent much time with this album. I remember it being quite well thought of on release. I remember liking the singles, but not sure I ever gave it a full listen... It's definitely a 90s album. It's pretty cool, but I'm probably gonna reach for Portishead when I want the moody atmospheric pop lushness. I'm sure it would benefit greatly from a headphone listen.
I wouldn't have categorized myself as a fan of Garbage, but I remember all of the singles from this album from when they were released. This was my first time listening to the whole album. All of the tracks were good. "Only Happy When It Rains" and "Stupid Girl" were tracks that I have liked from when they were new. "Fix Me Now" is a new favorite and gave me a reason to round up to 4 stars. I could listen to this album again.
I really love the sound of Garbage. I'm sure a lot of that is down to the fact that a lot of the band are music production nerds and have carried it across to the band. The guitars are droney and interesting, and I really love the big sound they generate. Then you have a bit of trip-hop flavour seeping in there, and Shirley's vocals on top. I like the album as a whole, but there's some real stand-out tracks in here. I particularly love both Queer and Milk. Great stuff.

I am completely unimpressed by this album. I must be missing something! To me it just sounds really boring. The recordings and arrangements just sound really… square? There’s some interesting sounds, sonically, but overall I feel like I’m being beat over the head repeatedly. The lyrics I tuned into are all pretty corny. I must be missing context! I dunno… maybe all of the ways this album was groundbreaking or original have now been beaten to death. To me, it sounds boring, slow, and square. I don’t think it should be on this list.

Wow! I really enjoyed this album. I'm slightly familiar with Garbage (When I Grow Up is one of my favorite jams), but this is my first time to listen to a whole album of theirs. Shirley Manson is a great vocalist, and the band did a wonderful job producing this album. The instrumentation is so wild and unique, that it almost transcends what I think of when I'm mentally trying to place an album in a particular decade. I think this album is going to go into my regular rotation of things I listen to.
A classic album. 'Only Happy When it Rains' is what got me into Garbage and girl grunge in the first place, so of course this is going to be a five star listen. The best part is that it isn't just the only good song on the album. Start to finish, this album is full of bangers. 'Queer' is delightfully strange, 'Stupid Girl,' 'Vow,' and 'Not My Idea' rock, and everything else from beginning to end is just as engrossing and bewitching. I don't know what I expected the first time I picked up 'Garbage,' but it wasn't such a pure gem of an album.

I'm aware this is a manufactured band to sell alt rock to the mainstream, but so much music comes from that melding of art and capitalism so just as sex pistols I'm going to judge this purely on how much I enjoyed the music right now... And on that it's simply not bad few stand outs with only happy when it rains, but ethereal slower tunes as well. Overall 3.5

Some great songs on the album but lagged a bit at some points.
Shoegaze and grunge guitar with trip hop beats leaning on the darker synth textures of 80s British alternative (Depeche Mode, new order) . A wonderful synthesis of the nineties. Totally holds up. It pulls on the attributes from contemporary and past music while clearly delineating a path to 2000s alternative, a really great album to hear.
apparently grunge is a big gap in my musical knowledge because i’d never heard of this group, but this was really excellent. lyrics are fine-not-great but i didnt come for the lyrics, and everything else was really grimy and somewhat trippy. i really liked it.

Supervixen, queer, only happy when it rains is one of the best three song opening rushes that I’ve herd in a while. The rest of the album is green though really unique sounding on an instrumental level ( singing is great too but the 90’s was like the decade of amazing singers so Manson fairs quite low in my personal ranking ). Other personal favourites include: as heaven is wide, not my idea, a stroke of luck, vow, stupid girl, dog new tricks,my lovers box,fix me now, milk. Oh that’s all of them well I guess it’s a 5 then!!!

I hadn’t listened to this in years, despite being a fan back in the day. I was delighted by how well is stands up. A marriage of sexy vocals, tightly constrained distortion and quality hooks. The Tricky remix of Milk is well worth seeking out.
Even if Butch Vig’s idea for Garbage was not as original as he thought it was (whatever they made from this record, I hope Curve were getting some of it), it’s still pretty well executed. Part shoegaze wall of noise, part danceable power pop with a few very catchy hooks thrown in for good measure. Like I say, the cut and paste sample approach in noise rock is a direct lift from Curve, and the similarities are frankly too great to overlook here. But the singles are far more chart friendly than anything Dean Garcia and Toni Halliday came up with (that’s not to say these tracks are better), at the expense of some actual innovation. Being a group mostly comprised of producers and industry professionals, the sound is largely forensic and calculated which is to the ultimate detriment of the record. But even while it clocks in at nearly an hour, the songs are strong enough to justify its length. On the whole, a decent record.

I definitely had a Shirley Manson girl crush when this album came out.
This album is a strong mix of alternative rock, pop, and dance music. Despite its almost hourlong length, I found this album to be very enjoyable and it captures my attention throughout. I’m sure the Argumente can be made that this album dilutes the emergent alternative rock genre with commercial pop trappings but I think that is the wrong way to think about it. Commercialism is important for all of the popular genres and this album strikes a very clean balance.
Conflicted about this one, there were some good riffs and the grunge pop mix works sometimes, but every now and then seemed a bit silly. Might listen again

The use of electronics makes this one stand out from others of the time.
Only Happy When It Rains and Supervixen are okay and recognizable, the rest is not that interesting imho. Nothing too bad either though, just not something I would revisit.

Sounds really dated now - used to love it
I seem to remember buying this for my sister, back in the day, as a birthday present, on Amazon. So I have had this album longer than I realized. I should have listened to it before now. Wow, what a good album. I think the star here is definitely Butch Vig. The production really makes every song hit with a punch. I don't think there was a single song that I disliked, maybe the last song was a little obvious (reminded me of STP's Kitchenware & Candybars). But otherwise, really good stuff!
I was not a fan of Garbage when they came out in the 90's. Not rock enough and too dance for me maybe. But all these years later I have a much better appreciation for their sound and I can hear so much of it in bands (who I like or don't mind) that came after them (e.g., Metric, AWOL Nation, even the Killers). It's kind of amazing how long it took for computer-aided rock to really take off. It seems like half the bands considered rock these days are just layering and looping computer and synth rock sounds. I think what I realized listening to the album for the last week is how catchy the real instrument sounds are and how well they're mixed with the "fake" instruments. I prefer the non-singles like Supervixen, Not My Idea, Dog New Tricks, or Fix Me Now (my favorite on the whole album) to the singles. I quite like Only Happy When it Rains now but I didn't in the 90's and I like Vow (a lesser known single) more than the bigger ones (Queer or Stupid Girl). All in all, a pretty solid album even though I tend not to like produced rock and prefer authentic rock and instruments.

79/100: I’m classifying this album as another hidden gem I’d never heard of before. I had no idea who Garbage was before getting this album, but wow do I love this group now. This album is quintessential 90’s grunge, and as a fan of grunge, I don’t know how I’d never heard it before. The song “Only Happy When it Rains” is an absolute banger, as is “Fix Me Now” and “Not My Idea.” In fact, I’d argue there’s not much filler on this album at all, even the songs that I wouldn’t classify as “great” are still very good. I’ll definitely be revisiting this group and album again in the future.
solid 7/10 not amazing, and those lyrics regularly made me roll my eyes but the production is actually pretty good mostly enjoyable with a few awkward quirks
