Reviews (page 6 of 7)

I mean I got another Siouxsie album on the 1001 more list and it was alright, but this one was kinda bland and all over the place. Also her voice was grating.

What’s their most popular one? Not on this album. Helter Skelter? I hardly know er. . .

Based on the timing, I guess this was very influential but it's not very interesting to listen to. Not nearly as fun as other early punk like the Sex Pistols and the Ramones.

Siouxsie And The Banshees took a unique approach, with the bass and especially the drums interpreting their traditional roles in a somewhat more expansive way. In contrast, the guitar work is extremely simplified compared to other rock bands. According to Wikipedia, the result can be classified as post-punk, but to me it sounds more like new wave, especially because of Siouxsie's vocals. For 1978, the sound is extremely clear, and I also like the band's somewhat alternative approach. However, the latter led to extremely repetitive arrangements, as the guitar, as the only instrument that was really suited to it, largely refused to contribute to the creative design. This might still work if Siouxsie didn't have an extremely annoying voice, but one that could really carry the songs. For this reason, however, I say: nice, but no.

Zone out a fair amount. Beat was a bit too slow for me at first. Didn't really vibe

Siouxsie’s early singing voice has always been a bit of a miss for me. Lots of drama and passion and whatnot, alongside the darker melodies, kinda par for the course with early punk. This one feels a bit inchoate, a bit stuck on the rudimentary simplicity of early punk and post-punk, lots of volume and drama standing in for the more interesting material to come.

This album was apparently revolutionary, but you really need to be in context. The VCR was revolutionary as well, but neither has aged well. It was OK, but their later stuff was better.

Have never been a big fan of theirs...this one didn't change my mind.

Algunos riffs son disfrutables pero la estética post-punk es mi sonido. 2.7

Nothing to get excited about. 2.5.

I can see why this album was important but this is not a style of music that I enjoy.

I can see the influence but not really my thing

Började helt ok men jag tröttnade

Honestly, this didn't do it for me. But I'm so deeply uninformed about the artist I don't feel qualified to be giving much of another comment

# Album Name: The Scream # Artist: Siouxsie And The Banshees # Rating: 2/5 # Comments: Didnt gel with this album. # Top Tunes: # Would I listen to it again? No

Very dark. A bit limited compositionally, but I liked the energy of Carcass and Hong Kong Garden is a standout.

Listened to this while playing Leviathan Wilds with my partner. We won! I thought I was a fan of Siouxsie because i remember their song on the batman returns soundtrack was my favorite (aside from kiss from a rose.) Boy was i surprised by this album...but not in a good way. I can appreciate what it did for post punk...but post punk is probably one of my least favorite genres. At least we won our game!

I really wish I liked siouxsie and the banshees more than I actually do. Maybe part of it is the sound system (or lack thereof) I listen to them on? Some of their songs are absolutely great and amazing. A lot of them I have a hard time listening to because of the vocals. It’s screeching. Which is just really unpleasant to listen to even though I think the style and performance and genre is iconic. I appreciate them for being so distinct and original and unabashedly themselves. So, I don’t necessarily wish they would change their vocals, but I would listen to them a lot more if it was easier to listen to. It’s hard to engage much more in the music because I’m so distracted most of the time by the discordant, high pitched vocals.

Never got Siouxsie and The Bamshees. Still dont.

Riot grrrl x1000. I don't think I'd heard the Helter Skelter cover before. Good stuff. High 2s.

Not my favorite

everything just kind of sounded the same? i can’t tell you a single lyric or what have you

Mediocre punk music. The best song on the album is the cover of Helter Skelter. Overall, the vocals are grating and music is eh.

Some nice guitar work offset by terrible singing.

Just alright, liked this band a lot in the day but I'd say my tastes have changed.

Annoying

This kind of energy is enjoyable for a couple of songs, then it slowly starts draining your soul lol

I can hear the groundwork for a lot of music I love, but it feels a bit too rigid for my taste

I mentioned accessibility in a previous review I did, and this is another perfect example: to a goth-curious kid in the late 80s / early 90s, this album did not exist. You could not walk into Sam Goody or the music section at Caldor and pull it off the shelf, and the industry was just starting to convert vinyl to new media, with early albums from English punk bands not being a priority. With all the complaints about streaming service and digitalization, the fact that I can listen to this album in my car, just by asking an invisible robot to play it for me, should stand for something. Anyway … it’s ok. Old man complaints aside, Siouxsie Sioux obviously had a revival almost a decade later and with a different sound but the same distinctive voice, which is the uniqueness of the album. It’s worth listening to and they were/are a good band. My continued knock on this list is the metric that puts albums onto this list — why exactly do I have to listen to The Scream versus the entire catalog of Taylor Swift or The Foo Fighters? I’m not complaining— again, this album feels like it never existed and I credit the project for mentioning it — but not even cool stuff from a cool era gets all the stars.

After a couple of listens I just don't connect a ton with this.

Too shouty for me

cute, cool, didn't listen too closely tho

I made it all the way through without ever particularly enjoying any of it.That was largely because the album was relatively short and I fell into a rabbit-hole on wikipedia that started off with me reading about this album. It gets 2 stars, and it can count itself fucking fortunate to get that many!

I find the vocals to be quite annoying. It takes away from the rest of the album

I don't like her voice and the music made me anxious.

Meh. Kind of all blended together.

its something else i guess

Didn’t hate it, but didn’t love it either. And a few of the songs really annoyed me. It’s between two and three stars for me. I’ll settle at two.

The music was fine but her voice got grating after a bit. It’s a 2.5 but I’m rounding down

I quite liked the music, not so the singing. Very shouty vocal style, not my cup of tea

I still have yet to find a Siouxsie record that I like. Favourite Track(s): Switch Least Favourite Track(s): Carcass, Mirage

The drums are cool. Everything else I did not like. Not into post punk 4 / 10

Idk. Not for me. I looked it up and her makeup is absolutely dope though The helter skelter cover was pretty good

They played the chords on Helter Skelter wrong.. 2/5

Didn't vibe with this group, extra so because this is the 2nd opportunity. Vocals just doesn't work for me.

I do not understand why Siouxsie and the Banshees don't appeal to me. I like goth. I like new wave. It should tick all the boxes, but I always am just left cold.

Very much in the influential but I don’t like it category

I was avoiding this album becasue of what I thought this would sound like, and I started listening to it and was relieved that it wasn't that. But as the music wore on, I realized it still wasn't my taste. just a different genre. I don't know. It's a darker smiths? just not what I would sit down and listen to. Probably culturally relevant though?

Eh. It was fine. Not for me really. Hong Kong Garden was the standout track.

Fikk ikke helt taket på vokalen.

I typically like this era of punk/post-punk and have learned recently that generally the rawness of it is a big part of my appreciation. We, evidently this album was a bridge too far because it just felt like noise to me and I found the whole experience pretty off-putting.

I mean it sounds kinda cool but I didn't want to explore it more than that.

This album sounds really raw and unpolished, but not necessarily in a good way. I like Siouxsie Sioux‘s voice, but it feels lost in a fog in some songs and like it’s competing with the instruments in others. I read that this was all intentional production-wise, but I don’t care for it. Admittedly, the only songs I knew from Siouxsie & The Banshees prior to listening to this album were Peek-A-Boo and Kiss Them for Me, both of which are much more melodic than this album’s fare. I didn’t connect with much on this album, so I probably won’t revisit it. I am going to delve further into their discography though because I’m intrigued at how their sound evolved and I’ve got to hear what Robert Smith’s contribution to the band was during his tenure as I’m an avid Cure fan.

I don't care much for the vocal. OK tunes and OK album.

Some of the records on this list are there due to critic-brain. I'm sure I could point to better 1978 records that didn't make it (and I like other Siouxsie records)

Punk/5

Didn't like her voice. Found this like noise.

I can see why its here, not my thing though. Droning voice, I hate the guitar tone and it wasnt interesting enough for me to buy in.

Not for me

I’m not a fan.

I was rushing a little bit, so this whole album was a little bit of an "okay, come on... nothing exciting is happening, pretty meh overall, and I just want it to finish", but I am sure it is listened to, because it was relatively chill.

This just felt put-on to me.

This i do find unique sound , as the other albums of theirs I got felt that way too and I respect It’s not really a genre I like but if I feel pop rocky I will consider going here

Musically almost o.k. but the vocals often on the edge to annoying!

Didn't really stand out and I'm not into punk

painful listen until Hong Kong Garden

Not my favorite by Siouxsie. A bit too raw with glimmers of greatness.

Another one that’s not my thing.

Avoid "Helter Skelter" at all costs. You'll be glad you did. Look, I like some of Siouxie's later works, but this debut album - perhaps save "Hong Kong Garden" is essentially screamy talking to bad music.

I liked this album less than I thought I would, being familiar with a handful of tracks from the band. I enjoyed the energy and the chaotic punk vibe, but not something I'll listen to frequently

It had some moments but i won’t be going back any time soon…I like the energy and the songs that are actual songs, but not the noisy bits…”Mirage” has traces of proto-Nirvana. This feels like one of those albums that’s “important” or influential but people don’t actually enjoy listening to it, and it feels like it influenced people to play out of tune Jazzmasters. The “Helter Skelter” cover was bad. Probably would have liked it more or found it interesting when it came out but now it’s been copied to death, not Siouxsie’s fault.

I usually like them I’m sorry but I was cooking while listening and cracked a rotten egg and my whole place smelled weird and this music was compounding the strangeness and I felt like I was in an ad for a punk horror movie and it was so weird and I’m so sorry Siouxsie

I thought i might like this despite not particularly be drawn in by the stuff i’ve heard by Siouxsie and the Banshee’s in the past. I was wrong, i cant past the vocals and their version of Helter Skelter is an abomination. Hong Kong Garden is the best track but that’s not saying much

Siouxsie is quite the tragadeigh Punk is bad. Water is wet. Cowboys suck.

Pretty brutal listen. Really all I can say about it

A lottttt of screeching

Further evidence that Motley Crue covers Helter Skelter best

5/5 for the banshees. 2/5 for Siouxsie Sioux singing like a banshee.

Early punk style, with Florence and the Machine's vocals. Was not a fan.

Debut album, late 70s. Post-punk. Edgy and rough, noisy at times. Great but not for me.

I know that my dad will be disappointed in me, but this was a hard listen.

I'm still not inspired after my second offering from Siouxsie. It's okay and I can imagine of it's time it was groundbreaking. Probably doesn't help that it's not my go to sound anyway.

Quite and interesting listening, it is a little experimental for my taste 2/5

Not my style

Not a huge fan. Don’t really gel with the style or her voice. Would be good as a live music at a pub I think

# 544 : The Scream by Siouxe And The Banshees The Scream – Post-Punk’s Polite Yawn Better than expected? Sure. Memorable? Not even slightly. The Scream is the kind of album that politely enters the room, makes no eye contact, and quietly leaves before dessert. It’s listenable, in the same way that beige wallpaper is lookable. For a genre known for its jagged edges and emotional intensity, this debut feels oddly tame—like post-punk with its shoes off and a cup of herbal tea. Nothing here offends, but nothing inspires either. It’s the musical equivalent of nodding along to a conversation you’re not really following. If this album taught me anything, it’s that maybe there aren’t 1,001 albums you must hear before you die. Some you can just wave at from a distance and move on with your life. Verdict: Meh with a capital “M.” File under “respectable but skippable.”

Pretty alright. it had a theme troughout the entire album, trademarked with a lot of disharnonious guitar. Sadly none of the songs made it to my favorite playlist, and its not something i would normally listen to personally, even though it might have historic importance. That means i will be a bit harsh with my rating

Music is interesting, vocals are annoying. A lot of reviews are stating how obviously this album influenced other bands, but I have to admit I struggle to hear that.

the name of the album speaks for itself. but I don't like noisy stuff

Not horrible but I can never decide if they're being serious or not. Better in small amounts.

Sioixsie not hitting the spot (yet) on her debut album.

That song about the Chinese buffet was alright. Other than that, I like some of what the banshees did when they played with dissonance. As for Siouxsie, she ruined every song with her singing that sounds like a whale dying.

Sounds flat footed and monotone no real excitement or buzz about it all.

I liked the earlier one better.

okay girl go off…. Somewhere else because this is too chaotic for me. I can see a time and place for this to just rage and listen to this but I guess I wasn’t in that time and place.

Yeah this album was not it for me - too messy (which I kinda get it’s the style) and nothing really flowed… great guitars tho

Whilst I can appreciate the significance of the album through the music that came out of this and the band being women. I’m not a fan of this post punk and it felt like it didn’t go anywhere. Not horrible just not my thing.

Niet helemaal mijn smaar. Andere albums van haar zijn beter

I want to like this way more than I do (bass-led rhythm? bongo percussion? sign me up!) but the vocals really kill it for me

Never felt it got going.

I thought I would give it a higher rating for nostalgia purposes, but some albums didn’t age well.

Not my genre. I liked 2 songs. The rest was not my type of music and I won’t relisten.

Very raw. Very garage rock. Very bad though. Could've lived without listening to it

p422. 1978. 2 stars. 70's Goth/punk template. Influential, but let down by too much filler and dreadful production - it sounds like it was recorded in a mud bath. And no-one needs 6+ minute tracks.

We have Sonic Youth at home ahh

The pronunciation is as obnoxious as the music. Carcass had a promising introduction with the thick power chords, but then I heard her voice. No thanks.

A hall of fame entry in the "influential but not actually good" cannon to me. There wasn't a song in here that I connected with, but I'm glad that so many musicians had this as inspiration. Thanks for your work, will likely skip it if it comes on a mix in the future.

Not my thing

Just really not my thing.

Music historian Simon Goddard described the music on The Scream as a "claustrophobic abyss of angst and angularity". YEAH BUT THATS NOT GOOD IS IT????!!!!! I don’t want a claustrophobic abyss of angst and angularity. I want good music that sounds good and that I enjoy. Like for physical sensations, I want a warm relaxing bath, not to be kicked in the balls repeatedly by a Hells Angel wearing steel toed boots. Are post punk fans musical BDSM people? What are you doing to yourselves? And why are you also doing it to me?

3/10 - she’s just kind of annoying. Banshees is a valid band name bc of the wailing

ok'ish

Instrumentals are ok, but the voice is horrible

Gets quite annoying after a while

Carcass and Mirage keep this from getting one star. If we had decimals it would be a 1.6, so a very generous 2.

post punk, 1978 -> 2

I really don’t get the appeal of a chic yelling random words. I tried to be supportive but this one is obnoxious.

1978. Female vocalist with a heavier rock yelling vibe. Pretty good kind of jam for doing construction/cleaning.

Might have been their breakthrough album but to me it is the least relevant album in their discography. There are only four of their albums I would consider including on a list like this and those are KALEIDISCOPE and JUJU, which are on this list; and PEEPSHOW and SUPERSTITON, which are not on this list. The rest are mostly irrelevant.

its ok. I liked helter skelter

Opzich priem rock

Again with the semi punk sound. Too much discord for my liking.

Liked the first few songs but it was a bit too much after like 3

Tää sivu ei oo väärässä kun tää sanoo, että post punk on mun vähemmäb suosimia genrejä. Soinnut on hirveitä. Laulu on hirveää. Lisäksi sivuhuomiona, se on vissiin kanssa tän genren juttu että kappaleet soitetaan enimmäkseen tomeilla ja virvelillä. Parhaat: The Staircase

I didn’t get this and I don’t like her voice.

I appreciate its influence on later bands but I don’t like her voice or singing style. It ruins the whole album in my opinion.

I honestly just really hated the vocals so so much. Listened through and there were some interesting vocal parts, but nothing spectacular.

Hmm... Don't get punk, so only fitting that I also don't get post-punk...

2.5 - a little too dissonant for me and also had the worst cover of helter skelter I’ve heard

I really liked the JuJu album but I didn't care much for this. The vocals were annoying in places and the tracks were tedious in the build up.

I enjoyed them when they matured a little more, this sounds very garage-demo-ish.

Not my thing

Too much like hard work

Umm, I get that this is "post-punk", but it sounds chaotic. Maybe it's controlled chaos, but it's a lot of noise for me.

Just uninteresting to me.

It was OK but I'd hoped for more.

More punky than I expected to be fair, still not really great though, felt more noisy than musical.

I think punk rock was exciting at the time but it comes across as dated and, well, a bit banal in 2025. But maybe that’s just me , ageing.

I wanted to like this so much, because it felt and sounded so original, but I really couldn't get into the singing style. It's a 2.8 stars for me, but I feel bad about it.

Banshees are known for their wailing so their name is perfect. The music is far form that though

Not terrible

i completely understand why people enjoy this album, but this just isn't my cup of tea.

no es mi estilo

Did not enjoy this one as much as the first album I had from them.

I think it was the singing for me. Liked alot of everything else. Not bad but not great!

Man, Siouxsie sucks doesn't she?

just bland, helter skelter was cool though

All my friends that grew up listening to this band bought combat boots and became goths. Anyhow, I like it alright, but it isn't that great. Never got its hooks in me and today wasn't its day either.

other album was better and the awful Beatles cover did not help

Det här var bra dom första tre låtarna. Men när 10 låtar in så låter alla spår exakt likadant, och hennes sätt att sjunga börjar bli riktigt jobbigt att lyssna på.

Interesting

I feel like enjoyment of this album hinges entirely on whether or not you like Siouxsie Sioux’s vocals. I do not. Score: 2/5

Music was a bit different but the singing was grating low 2.

Wasn’t into this

This is a little too raw for me. I like Siouxsie, but this is closer to punk that what I know of her and her band.

I was listening to this while on a long distance drive. One song blended into another. I can’t even really remember much about it other than it being alright. 2.5/5

early early Souxsie - NOT my cup of tea until Hong Kong Garden when they start to sound recognizable

Huge fan, but not of this album. It has its moments. But it lacks her more ethereal voice and wickedness.

Pretty good debut, takes the harsh punk rock sound of the sex pistols but applies it for dissonant, atmospheric tribal music. Note that it's atmospheric because they can't play fast. C

Not one for me. Music is good, but the vocalisation drives me insane.

Didn’t enjoy it as much as I expected

Post Punk is hard for me..

Ban she’s? In my America? I don’t think so

Thoroughly enjoyed the cover of Helter Skelter, but hee haw else about this album did anything for me! Shame really, I was kind of looking forward to this one.

It sounds like anti-music. Good at first and then overwhelming.

I wasn’t really vibing with it until helter skelter. It’s a banger for sure, and then kinda liked the rest of the album

Well it’s definitely Siouxsie—lots of wailing, icy guitars, and foam-soft drums. I acknowledge the very distinctive soundfont and vibe that this album has, I just don’t really enjoy it. Best song: Carcass

Painful. All I heard was whining and shouting for 45 minutes. This is giving actual banshees a bad rep Metal Postcard was enough to drive me to insanity And the Helter Skelter cover was honestly a hate crime 2 ⭐️

01) Pure - 5,0 02) Jigsaw Feeling - 5,5 03) Overground - 6,0 04) Carcass - 5,5 05) Helter Skelter - 5,5 06) Mirage - 5,5 07) Metal Postcard (Mittageisen) - 5,5 08) Nicotine Stain - 5,5 09) Suburban Relapse - 5,5 10) Switch - 5,0 TOTAL: 5,45 (55/100) Current ranking: 291/332 Not really something I enjoy. Her screaming is not helping.

Did not enjoy this.

Not my cuppa joe

High highs and low lows

Punk met een zangeres. Het stomme is dat ik soms wel wordt gegrepen door een simpel melodielijntje of zelfs door de zangeres als ze even niet expres zo vals zingt. Maar meer dan 2 sterren kan ik er niet van maken.

Super forgettable and kind of a drag to get through

I love and appreciate women in all genres, especially when heavily male-dominated, and I'm thrilled Siouxsie and the Banshees was female fronted. But The Scream just wasn't for me. The abrasive punk sound never interested me much, and it was hard to get over that. For what it's worth, the Banshees did a lot right. The Scream had a whole ass spooky vibe! High school goths should be all over this album. Songs like "Jigsaw Feelings" or "Carcass" were so unnerving, too.

I could hear some motifs that reminded me of other bands, so I don't doubt that this had some influence on future groups, but the music was just mediocre for me.

I like "hong Kong Garden" and a couple of other tracks.. but overall.. didn't like it.. too shouty.

It’s all just kind of odd and discordant. Maybe that’s the point? Either way, not my vibe

The riffs are standoffish, the drums are cool and uniquely tom-heavy, there's grit, and yet I really couldn't get into this. I get it, it's like tough female-led post-punk with attitude, that's great! And normally something I'd be into, but maybe it's because I've heard this sound so many times that I can't help but hear this and hear like hundreds of local band shows that feature acts that sound just like this. Yea, I get that this is maybe one of the pioneering acts of that kind of sound but I don't really like that sound in general I think? To me all of the songs sounded the same until "Metal Postcard (Mittageisen)" (well except for their cover of Helter Skelter), and this is probably my least favorite track on the album. The riffs sound like a beginner guitarist trying to write riffs to play on Halloween, and the vocals are kind of annoying. Just kind of bored with this one. It's like a 1.8/2 for me.

I tried but it’s just not really my style of music, I’m sure it’s very popular with some people

Eh. Not for me. Kind of annoying after a couple songs.

No thank you. on to the next one!

Favourite song - carcass

not really for me

Not quite bad enough to be a 1.

I want to like this more, but just can’t get into it.

For a band called The Scream, they sure do scream a lot

A pretty cool post-punk sound but I honestly couldn't discern a single song from any other

Not unlistenable, but not my vibe

Annoying

Not for me. Felt like unpolished wanna be Go Gos. Then I learned they came first. Still not for me.

Uhh, another album by The Long Name band. I didn't like it before, I don't like it now. Well, I guess it always could have been worse.

An interesting album. I could see where this band was influential to a lot of others, but as is, I didn’t really care for it. Too many times it felt more like noise than music. The only song that really stuck out to me was the last one on the album, and I wish there had been more like it.

Can't see much of a reason to revisit this one.

Not sure why this one is in the list?

While I appreciate the influence this album had on later bands, the overall sound of the music felt hollow

I’m so glad wee weirdos have someone to look up to 🖤

AAAHHHHHHH

I've never been a fan of them --I listened a bit when their song "Spellbound" was big and they just didn't appeal to me and still don't. When I listen to them, I feel like a woman is yelling at me while a bunch of people mess with instruments.

Am I in a bad mood or does this kinda suck?

Not for me, some Beatles covers

Everything about Siouxsie says I should like her/the band, but I just hate the sum of the parts.

nothing really noteworthy

Cheeks

It pains me to give this score. This was very influential for lots of bands I love and styles of music I love. Unfortunately, I really didn't enjoy this while listening. Too goth, awful singing, not melodic, boring instrumentation. Bummer.

I'm sure this was very interesting in the late 70s, but this sounds more like screaming to me than singing.

I can see that this likely had some influence on a lot of post-punk sounds but the way she sings is a bit frustrating. It's like she's trying too hard to not care (bc caring would be uncool); it lacks emotion, fire, and comes off a bit flat. Overall, lackluster album for me. Some sounds and the compelling beat were decent but then some parts sounded like a jam session at my house (see piano interlude on last few minutes of "Staircase"). I liked the weird percussion opening on "Hong Kong Garden" but anytime you say "chicken chow mein" as a lyric you completely lose me.

I'm partly in on this. I like a good dark-punky girl (I think I'm dating one) band and Siouxsie has all the makings for it. It's a little dull though. I wanted some more fire from it. She just wasn't pissed off enough or something. Still peaks my interest on the bands direction...2.4

It's a fine album I guess but it didn't do much for me. There's a couple of OK songs and some decent post-punk sounds worth checking out but overall pretty forgettable once it was finished. I've heard of Siouxsie influence over the years so it must have been a big deal when it released. I imagine Siouxsie is an icon for female punk rockers. I'm glad I finally gave them a listen but don't need to go back to the well on them. I've never really liked Helter Skelter as a Beatles song and the Banshee cover doesn't do anything to help that. 2.11 stars

still not a fan of punk...despite like 50% of the albums on here being punk albums...

Do not enjoy this music. Not something I'd ever want to listen to again. Credit for its influences.

I don't think that I have heard this until today. Not bad but I'm guessing it is some of their earlier work maybe. I think that I prefer some of their older albums. They certainly have a unique style.

Fine. Siouxse and the Banshees have never been my thing, and listening to an entire album of theirs has confirmed this to my satisfaction.

Yeah, quite droll and boring. 2 stars

Ive decided that I don’t care much for punk. I tend to take music at face value, because why the hell would I choose to look past untamed yelling and battling instruments towards the influential aspect of the album. It’s not enough for me sometimes, especially not this time.

Está medio choto, safan algunos temas. Es como un Jefferson Airoplane más dark y lento.

Not the worst thing I've ever heard, but I was glad when it was over.

I read this was an important album in creating the sound of this kind of punk, but it just isn't a genre I've really liked yet. Female led, early punk. Maybe I'll give it another go someday

Good rhythms and a distinctive vocal.

They were a singles band for me. I’d never heard this album before. There were no singles released from this album. The only track I’d heard before was the cover of Helter Skelter, which is good. It’s on some cd of Beatles covers I own. They must have liked the White Album, because I also have their cover of Dear Prudence on a 7” single. They’ve covered Dylan, Velvet Underground & Iggy, all worthy covers. Musically this album is interesting enough, but the compositions are less than thrilling for me.

Ikävä sanoa, mutta odotin tämän loppumista: artistin leikittely harmonisuuden ja harmoniattomuuden rajalla (puhumattakaan pyrkimyksestä kieltää rytmi) johtaa juuri siihen, mitä hän tilaa. Ja sitten, outoa kyllä, levy herää eloon kahden viimeisen biisin aikana, mikä pelastaa jotakin.

Sin más.

Pensé que me gustaría más, la verdad.

Some potential. Not enough potential. I wasn't as into this album as the previous Siouxsie on the list.

Some of the time the music was a 4. Most of the time singing was a 1.

Hong Kong garden represent

Didn’t really enjoy this

Clearly influential. Not for me!

Very raw material. Not much else to say...

Not a big punk fan. This didn't change my mind

A bit one dimensional and moany for me.

Not for me. But it was okay.

I could understand why it is well liked just not by me

I'm not getting in it as I should yk? Not really my vibe

Mhm a bit droning at times but ok I guess

Not my jam

This isn’t bad in any obvious objective way, I just don’t really care for the Atonally Hollering Over Music school of vocals and that makes it harder for me to enjoy the pretty good music going on behind the vocals.

This just didn’t really appeal to me sonically. It sounded messy and unenjoyable. Probably wouldn’t listen to it again.

Interesting from a historical point of view. The stand-out song ‘Mirage’ is excellent. Overground isn’t half bad. A lot of the guitar-playing is exceptional and unique. But the vocals are generally hideous. Shrieking, shouty pseudo-punk without the genuine bile. This is primarily of interest as an illustration of where punk/new wave was in 1978. Good effort. Dreadful singing makes it almost unlistenable.

Post punk thumping toms but ultimately not quite there yet as a band. Hong Kong garden, not on the album but on the re-release, shows they were starting to write songs but the rest is a bit unsatisfactory.

Not… great….

This genre is not for me but I can understand why it was chosen.

Also not

This was just a bit insufferable for me. I understand the post punk influence, and I can certainly hear it. But man, I was begging for this album to be done when the Helter Skelter cover played. Virtually every band who was inspired by this album ended up doing it way better than Siouxie and the Banshees on their first time out.

I’m trying to decide if it’s these so-called “pre-punk” bands I dislike, or just the British ones. It’s listenable, and some of the tracks aren’t bad at all, but I don’t get the leap from this to some of the great punk bands. Found myself getting annoyed the further into the album I got.

The music is great but I really, REALLY do not like the singing and for that reason I have to give it a low rating. I appreciate the influence this band has brought to others though. Listens: 3 Fave Track: The Staircase (Mystery) Rating: 2

Semmed alright

Ben wel een beetje klaar met de 70s rock bandjes Wel oké maar ben er wel ff klaar mee

Opzich wel leuke muziek, maar kwam gewoon op een moment dat ik er geen zin in had. Goed album maar verkeerd moment voor mij

Good nothing inspiring

twas not for me

2.5 Rounding down bc it annoyed me more than it didn’t.

Not really my thing

A bit rubbish

Overground // Carcass // Helter Skelter // Switch // 2-2.5/5

Post punk is not my favourite genre, but some of these songs are quite listenable. Angular, angry and anguished lyrics, ok for a first listen but something i would go back to.

Genres: Post-punk Formed: Run time: 12 songs, 45 min, 19 sec The debut studio album by the British rock band. Siouxsie Sioux has an unmistakable voice and the band has a unique sound. Spotify: Least popular song: >494k Most popular song: >31M plays. 1, “Pure” is an instrumental. I always feel an album should start with the most impactful song, so having an instrumental as track one always surprises me. 2, “Jigsaw Feeling”, describes a mind torn apart by the complexity of conflicting thoughts and emotions. The content of the song is a good choice given the genre. However, I disliked the execution. It’s one of those songs where some of the words are stretched and drawn out to make that line fit with the structure of the song. I’ve always hated that in a song. To me it is lazy song-writing. 3, “Overground” discusses escaping from whatever limbo the protagonist is stuck in. 4, “Carcass” appears to discuss the objectification of women (or presumably any sexual partner). They become nothing more than a piece of dead meat. It also suggests that being in love will turn you into a carcass. Perhaps it’s about a one sided relationship? 5, "Helter Skelter” is a cover of the 1968 Beatles song. It seems to imply that those on the Helter Skelter keep moving, but make no overall progress in life. 6, Mirage” is critical about the media portrayal of beauty and the ill effects that has on those trying to meet those expectations. Those behind the (TV) screen have no appreciation of the effect they have on the ones watching the screen. 7, “Metal Postcard”. It is suggested this song is about society's obsession with material possessions and technology. I wonder if perhaps it’s a dig at the genre of music? “Metal won't rust when oiled and cleaned” - the vanity of heavy (glam) metal “Must go recycle my precious machinery" - Heavy Metal groups just put out the music over-and-over. “Thought I'd drop a line, the weather here is fine” - it’s fine to listen to other stuff. “Next time I'll serve metal” - is Siouxsie wondering if she’d have had more commercial success on the Metal bandwagon? 8, "Nicotine Stain", paints a very realistic and unpleasant picture of the effects of smoking cigarettes. It describes the conflict of knowing the harm but being unable to resist the urge. 9, "Suburban Relapse" describes frustration and “snapping” at some minor annoyance. This results in out-of-character feelings and behaviour - a mental breakdown. The lyrics suggest that this is common for those living a (mundane) suburban life. 10, “Switch”, regardless of who you are, what you look like and where you’re from, we all have problems. Doctors provide pills as a remedy but that comes with side-effects. Religion provides another option, but that stifles progress and blames the devil. 11, “Hong Kong Garden” discusses the conflict and contradictions facing modern Hong Kong. It covers tradition, commercialisation, pollution tourism. The line “An old custom to sell your daughter” and “Would you like number 23” makes selling your daughter sound like buying from a takeaway. All these dark aspects are discussed in a jolly sing-song way to emphasise the contradictions faced. 12, “The Staircase (Mystery). I think the song is a metaphor for different levels of consciousness. It does not make clear whether it is due to dreaming or chemically induced. It’s about seeing things from strange and surreal viewpoints as the protagonist travels between levels of the building. I love the sound of Siouxsie And The Banshees. Some songs are good, “Hong Kong Garden” is great, whilst others are written in such a lazy fashion that I can’t bear listening to them. Listen Again?: No My Rating: **

Not hard enough to be Punk and not tuneful enough to be New Wave.

She cannot sing. Not in a good punk way, just in a bad way. Ruins most songs. Shame as I think with a decent vocalist (or a decent bad vocalist who can pull it off) it would have been a half decent album. 2.5*

Not nearly as good as Juju.

Very indie, not very soundy good

Bit waily

I don't like the overall sound or vibe of these late 70s UK punk, post-punk and new wave albums. They just don't appeal to me on any level. The production is always tinny, the vocals (male or female) warbly and filled with weird whooping noises, songs generally simple affairs devoid of musicality beyond whatever they accidentally stumble upon, lyrics about living in grimy apartments in London where everyone smokes indoors. I get the feeling you need to like the *idea* of it more than enjoy the sound. I do not enjoy the sound OR like the idea. And as a final insult, this rubbish has a (mercifully only marginally) higher rating than yesterday's Slayer album, which obviously took so much more talent and effort. But here we are. 2/5.

It was okay

Foi ok

Not a fan of the vocals, and many of the songs were sounding kind of samey. Also tired of the guitar tone :(

Less is more with Siouxsie_Sioux. After the first wo tracks, I was thinking, "Hey, they're a lot better than I remember". Four songs later and I realized, "No, they aren't."

File under important, but not for me. This has influenced a lot of music I like, and the guitar work is sometimes outstanding, but little hooked me and I felt like I was being sonically hectored.

Man, I really want to love me some Souxsie and the Banshees, but this never grabs me.

Music was fine but not a fan of the vocals. It got especially bad on Metal Postcard.

I really try but overall not a fan.

this was just noise.

Maybe it was an influential album, but I really didn’t care for it.

Jag har svårt för att lyssna på detta.

Kinda liked it until i heard the vocals

not an enjoyable experience

That was painful to hear

Never was a real big fan of this band

It’s alright I probably won’t listen to them again

very standard, nothing new here...
