Reviews (page 7 of 7)
Couple of decent tracks. Overall a bit forgettable though.
This is sort of what I was talking about in my Elastica review. I liked that album but this album is pretty much the same vibe and I didn't like it. I guess nostalgic 90s post-punk is my thing but proto-post-punk isn't? Idk
It is with mild concern that I embark on this listen… I’ve heard some Siouxsie and the Banshees now and again but they have never made a real connection. It’s an interesting album that I really did not enjoy. It felt like work to listen to and isn’t something I see myself seeking out in the future.
listened on my drive home…feel like i could get into it
Not particularly fun to listen to. The vocals were a bit grating.
It was meh. If I were more into the genre of post rock/punk I think it’d be a good listen, but it just didn’t do too much for me. 4/10
Couldn’t stand the vocalist but wasn’t the worst thing I heard
The title obviously refers to the vocals. Really unpleasant for too much of the album. Even a song like Mirage, which is quite musical, suffers because she only sings two notes. It's a pity the vocals are so poor because I like the backing.
Much like the Banshees and their screams, there was something that drew you out to the moors and beyond the craggled rocks but despite their cries, it always ended in doom. That's how I felt listening to this, at first excited and intrigued for a possible new sound but then disappointed at more of the same
Not much to say. I know we've had another from this band, and I don't think much stood out to me then either. Kind of generic, punk-ish rock. There's lots and lots of albums like this on the list, and this would be on my chopping block to cull the herd, especially since they've got more than one on here. Favorite tracks: Switch, The Staircase. Album art: How many people are underwater in this shot? Hard to tell. Decent cover, but the framing is odd. 2.5/5
Apparently being influential does not necessarily translate to good.
2.5/5
This was an okay album. I feel as they were before their time. A decent alternative sound. I felt the singer was the biggest drawback. She had a Florence style but not as catchy. The instrumentals are good and the album wasn’t too boring. Overall I don’t think I’d replay it again. 5.1/10
I had a lot of hope for this, since I really like the album of theirs with "Spellbound" on it, but this one is just not hitting the same.
Early proto punk. Harsh
Mensch!
Sharp, stark and sinister, but lacking variety generally and dramatic high points specifically. This band would grow obviously, but this goth-y gloom fails to move much, without being outright bad or obnoxious.
the first two songs were alright but the voice got so annoying after awhile and i couldn’t deal with it anymore !
Couldnt tell one song from the next. Bored.
Didn't enjoy
Dreadful. Prerequisite for ANY recording vocalist should surely be the ability to find a note that fits the chord. Never again, Siouxsie.
I enjoyed this for about twenty minutes before it all got a bit samey… it is obviously an influential album though so I’m glad I listened to it.
old school punk "rough instrumental punk" not "fuck the machine" 2.5
Not a huge fan of this album. Started to feel a bit repetitive and boring less than halfway through. 4/10.
Siouxsie was on her bullshit for this one. Best track: Jigsaw Feeling
Siouxsue....Susie.....very clever.
Apparently this was *the* first album of the whole gloomy, post-punk genre, so kudos (and an extra half a star) for that. Would've preferred if they leant into that weirdness even more though - half of it sounds like plain ol' regular punk. I liked: the hypnotic 5/4 groove of Overground. I disliked: the Helter Skelter cover. Doesn't work imo. 2.5
OhMyGod I don’t like post punk. Enough already.
2/5 nope, it didn't stick
Thought i would like this more as i like some later albums. Nothing was particularly noteworthy on the album, as i didn't find anything catchy... if anything, it just felt long and didn't hold my attention.
Thoroughly irritating throughout m, the vocals are everything I hate. Probably only saved from a 1 because we get this album straight after the hangman’s daughter it’s comparably fucking brilliant
Horrible vocals detract from an electrifying album.
Some decent music ruined by a dreadful singer - I don’t have much more to add as it passed me all by
Punk isn't my scene, least of all Siouxsie at this stage in their career. Siouxsie's voice is - for me - too screeching and the music sounds all the same. Some Ramones, The Clash or Sex Pistols works for me, but not Siouxsie.
He escuchado solo 1 cancion y no era mi mood...podria reconsiderar
Vocals are not my cup of tea. Instrumentals are intriguing but not enough to make me like it that much. Highlighted songs: Overground, Hong Kong Garden, The Staircase
Music = Energetic, gritty, distorted, crunchy power chords. love it. Vocals = Obviously punk of this era was groundbreaking but personally I'm not a big fan... worth a listen to tick it off the list... moving on...
boring album. cool beatles cover.
Punk.
I didn't hate it but it was wildly unmemorable. I listened to a couple of the songs more than once and still got absolutely nothing out of it. Shame, I think my dad saw them live when they were touring in the seventies lol
Nota: 2.5
Nah
Rhythmic and aggressive (that's how I like my post-punk pioneers). Not keen on the singing, but the music is fine. The Helter Skelter cover is a bit of an abomination.
Ugggh. So boring. 3.
could be better
yaaaawwwwnnnn
eh nothing special
Never a fan.
Bit samey and dreary
false
Spiky
same old same old. Post punk. Not a fan.
Me no like
Really wasn't a fan of the singing, though "Helter Skelter" and "Hong Kong Garden" were pretty good. 1.5
Jagged post-punk built from abrasive guitars, tribal drumming, skeletal bass lines, and icy vocals feels like wandering through a crumbling industrial labyrinth illuminated by flickering fluorescent lights, Feeling mostly hostile. The album rejects conventional rock comfort in favor of tension, atmosphere, and raw psychological unease. Its harshness feels simply alienating.
I'm not drunk, stoned, or stupid enough to enjoy this. It's the audio equivalent of drowning in a pit toilet.
Awesome album for the deaf community
I guess it influenced a lot of other bands. I couldn’t take the “screaming “!

a lot of noise not for me
Don’t get this one
Joj grozan album, baš loše. 1/5, 1/10
I guess anyone can make an album.
The opposite side of the 1 star can be better than 2 star albums. I really disliked listening to this, but it at least was trying to do more than yesterday's Trafalgar.
Suzy, for inflicting such aural torment on me this morning I hereby Banshee you to the very depths of my ratings. And stop spelling your name in such a silly way.
Good lyrics (except Hong Kong garden obviously) but neither the music nor Siouxsie Sioux’s voice were enjoyable to listen to.
It was so longgggg. I'm sorry but i did not like it... 1.5/5
boring
Has a certain “yelling in a garage” vibe that I don’t really like.
What a goddamn earsore. I started out with an open mind but I was ready for this meandering, repetitive, nothing of an album to be over from by a few tracks in. I'm happy for folks who like Siouxsie And The Banshees, but it's not for me. 1/5
No, don’t float my boat.
She might also be a banshee.
I couldn't get through it. 1/5
I didn't like them then and I don't like them now
No
Just more Birtish proto punk with a bassist given way too much leeway to strum his songs into oblivion before they even start. Next.
This sucked
It was bad.
Not even the cover of Helter Skelter can save this travesty. 1001 album worthy: no - 108/204
annoying and unoriginal
Should have been called banshee and the banshee because this banshee is SCREECHING
No me gusta
shit poop
Really not something I enjoy
70s ladies punk. Can't stand it honestly. Her voice is grating, the pace is grating. 0 stars
No Standouts - Really can't stand her voice
Hard for me to move beyond those horrible vocals and that horrible remake of Helter Skelter…
Every song starts off like it’s gonna be so good and then the vocals come in with some of the weirdest writing ive heard in a minute with very weird timing and cadence. I really try to like this one.
Not really good music at all honestly
Frauengeschrei
Not for me. 1/5
I’d not like the flow of the beats.
Wow. What a load of shit. And the worst Beatles cover you'll ever hear. My poor ears
There is nothing quite so annoying as a screechy, atonal female angrily screaming into the mike. Put it to some mediocre punk arrangements, and what? Edgy? Maybe if you’re a fucking poser. This is crap, always will be.
I can appreciate the influence this band had on artists I really dig (The Cure, Florence and the Machine, etc) but this is completely not for me.
Liked another album by the band but not this one unfortunately
Exhausting
Nice instrument work, screaming voice which I find excessive and completely uninteresting. Next!
I am not a fan of post-punk. I do not like this album or its sound. It’s just not good. 1
Couldn’t get past the first few songs. Decent guitar work but her voice is so annoying. Lyrics were weak.
Did the author of this book have a deal with punk bands?
What the hell….
cool album cover, terrible album.
'Ik? Nee, ik maak alleen lelijke muziek. Dat zal ze leren. Daarmee wreek ik mij op de maatschappij. En dan zul je zien dat die arrogante zelfbenoemde muziekpausen zo dom zijn om mijn flutplaat in een boek met pakweg de beste 1001 albums aller tijden te zetten. Ha! En als je het niet erg vindt, ga ik nu even een cavia villen.'
I don’t get it. doesn’t sound good to me.
Trash. That Helter Skelter might be the single worst Beatles cover I have ever heard
not my vibe
Oh, this one was painful. I possess enough self love that I only allowed myself to be tortured by her horrible voice for a few songs before I turned it off. What is it doing on this list 😩
Just more terrible British Rock
Really disliked this
This was so bad.
No, this band will never become a favourite of mine. This is the second album I had and I disliked it even more than the first one
I did not enjoy that at all
70’s
Not for me… just noise.
Did I NEED to hear one SATB album? Probably not. Did I need to hear a second SATB album? DEFINITELY not.
Tubeless shouting over angular guitars. One song after another, after another after a Beatles cover in the style of tuneless shouting over angular guitars. Gets very tiresome very quickly for me.
Not for me.
The title says it all…
Vocals are not my jam, just too much drone on the same note.
Was gonna be unbiased for this album, but they ruined "Helter Skelter," so I gotta give them 1 star out of principle. Album Score: 4/10
Real crap
Not good.
Off-key yelling over only occasionally decent guitar. I was going to say the band woud be better without the singer, but as I listen to it more, not even that could save it. Not redeeming song yet. It just kind of blends together into a shouting, droning mess.
10:15 on a saturday night
Post punk. Never was a punk fan. Post punk isn’t any better. Can’t do it.
Well lemme tell ya what, if you don’t love punk, you’re really not going to live post-punk! The only thing catching my interest are the covers.
Im embarrassed to learn this is from the 70s, my time as a teen. This is trash. If I could rate a zero, I’d do it.
decrease my brain power
Staccato guitar solos and screaming vocals, fits well within the 70s punk-rock genre. Nothing distinctive or notable compared to the numerous other bands with a similar sound from that era.
Didn’t really inspire me although it’s probably a great band at that time
👎👎👎👎👎
The music would be good, until the singer starts on all these tracks. I get why it's an important album. I'm literally never listening to it again.
I wanted to like it but it is repetitive, simplistic and irritating.
I just wanted this lady to stop yelling at me
Boring Banshees more like
Really didn't like this
Hard to listen to. Not a great debut from Siouxsie.
I’m not a fan of female vocals, especially the terrible cover of Helter Skelter
I ALREADY RATED THIS YOU IDIOTS
not for me i guess
I can see why this album was important for the genre of punk. It is just not my cup of tea. Too simple in its structure.
Couldn't get into it.
It's not my kind of music.
This was a tough listen.
Couldn’t get into it
Couldn’t get through this one. Just nothing appealing to me, at all.
I hate everything that this album spawned. So much of this I wish noone took inspiration from, most of it is horrible to listen to. But this one is not that bad and I do understand the feeling people get from it. I just usually gag instead, when some guy starts yelling and screaming about their perceived inequality and calls it punk. Ok it gets a point for the cover. But loses it for that cause then it's on my summary :)) 1
Was not interested
Nah, not for me.
Verschrikkelijk. Na 5 nummers was het exit.
It's clear why the group is called SIOUXIE and the banshees. Siouxie really takes centre stage and that's far from a good thing. Loved the arty intro track and simple yet interesting second track (which rocked). Great start to the album and I was really excited. However, by the end of Helter Skelter I was ready to turn it off. Her voice just starts to grate. It just feels like it lacks authenticity. It's all a bit of an act and an annoying one at that. It makes most of the songs unlistenable.
Noise
