Reviews (page 5 of 7)
Never knew Siouxsie was English, thought the band was from the southwest. Always liked their sound. Best song is Hong Kong Garden due to the unique xylophone arrangement. Album is a worthy freshman effort (3.1*s)
Not my all-time favorite Siouxsie & The Banshees songs selections, but a salad out nonetheless.
Back in the day, I was a fan of Adam And The Ants. As they often toured with Siouxsie And The Banshees, I knew of them, too. The band is aptly named and their music was one of a kind then. But there's a reason I was fan of Adam Ant and not Siouxsie. Still, I liked them on occasion.
Not as enjoyable as anything else I’ll be listening to today. Didn’t like her droning voice or any of the melodramatic material. It is for some, but not me. 3/5
I actually kinda dig this. Opening track is really weird and cool. I like a lot of what they were going for.
I've seen countless photos of Siouxsie with other icons if the era. She was really groundbreaking and influential. I'm glad to have this album in the 1001, although not my favourite it deserves it's place in the top shelf.
I was pleasantly surprised by how tuneful and enjoyable this was.
+- tambem
You can tell why this was so influential. Though none of the songs really grabbed me, and the vocal was intentionally discordant, this whole record is like a blue print for punk. It is a little monotonous as all the instruments are played with the exact same gain, levels, and style throughout. Which does sort of hurt it some.
Great to hear Siouxsie Sioux in full flow - lots of great moments.
didn’t think i was gonna like it at all after the first song but it grew on me
Man I just can't get into this band! I like their later, more polished albums like Tinderbox a bit better. That's actually all I've heard of the band, that and this. I should like this more. I like Carcass and really like the Helter Skelter cover. There are other moments I really don't like, like Hong Kong Garden. Feels like an important album but there are others from this era and scene I would turn to first.
I made the scream face with the Beatles cover out of nowhere. In general I was entertained but didn’t love anything (2.5/5)
Ooo I enjoyed it! I love the overall sound and that Helter Skelter cover is amazing!!! But I must admit and say this isn't something I would revist...
A wail of a good time. From the opening instrumental. To the Beatles cover there’s so much to like here. Siouxsie Sioux is full voiced going off! A great intro to what lies around the corner in the decade to come!
I will probably be repeating myself form the last album by 'Siouxsie And The Bansheest's rocking, and she has a uniquely muscular voice. Plenty of thundering drums and grinding guitar. Great music to get ready for something. Warlike, determined, and gets the blood going doesn't it? Some great songs, not brilliant or as fun as the first S and the B album I heard. (I read they are more a single band than an album band- makes sense)
I love Siouxsie in the Banshees but this album is kinda boring for me. some good slappers on there tho.
I really loved the first Siouxsie And The Banshees album I got on the project, but this one doesn't hold up to the same level. It's good, but not as revolutionary. 3/5
I get how pivotal this album was, but it's not easy to listen to.
Not bad but largely forgotten by next morning
I want to like it more than I actually do like it because I respect it and Siouxsie so much. But it's pretty rough.
Not bad)
This was better than some of the other uk post punk ones on this list. I get a little tired of the exaggerated UK accent on these albums. Everything other than that was pretty good. Will I listen to again: 50%
Raw but good.
‘‘Twas alright.
First listen to post punk album that influenced many alternative rock bands I grew up with. “Jigsaw Feeling”, “Carcass”, “Helter Skelter” and “Hong Kong Garden” all stood out.
I like this.
I guess this is mostly included because it was influential. It has some catchy parts, but mostly doesn't really stand out to me.
C+ Pure 2 Jigsaw Feeling 3 Overground 3 Carcass 3 Helter Skelter 3 Mirage 3 Metal Postcard (Mittageissen) 3 Nicotine Stain 3 Suburban Relapse 3 Switch 3 I don't understand how some of these are in here.
Indeed sounds very new. Not my cup of tea though
Fine. Not grabbing me as much as I thought it would and the Helter Skelter cover sucks
Didn’t listen to it all. Kinda just seemed like a rock album :( it was fine I guess. I didn’t dislike any songs but I didn’t like any.
6/10 Initially might have called it boring, but it grew on me as it went on Consistent in style & vibe Music ok, vocals excellent Best: Hong Kong Garden
Probably great but not for me
Siouxsie does have some great songs. I don't think this was it
Siouxsie being Siouxsie! Not my fave but it’s tolerable pretty progressive surprisingly popular pop for 78! Hong Kong garden is the saving grace of this album for me.
Debut from S&B. Lots of scratchy guitar and surprising mature. Good production too. Her voice is a bit Marmite and the sings are not that memorable.
While I recognize the influence and respect it, this one doesn't really hit for me. Overlong crooning mostly, and while some of the music is interesting, it's pretty basic and repetitive. Not awful, but not great in any standout way to me. Fav tracks: Hong Kong Garden, Mirage
Strange. 3.5
Like all great jazz, Mingus puts us inside a Time Capsule that’s inside a Time Machine. We’re right there listening to art created in the spot and we’re also confronted by music that no genre or era has caught up with. It’s not for everyone but it’s meant for everybody, and it rewards repeated listens like the most timeless music always does.
A pivotal album which influenced the post punk scene, it has some innovative use of effects and guitar. There are some bright spots in the album, but I generally found it lackluster and uninteresting compared to later efforts in the genre
Didn't get enough time to give this my full attention, though I did listen to it. I'm not versed in enough punk music to understand what they did which was avant-garde or influential, though many of the sounds seemed familiar to me via more contemporary punky bands.
Liked this way more than JuJu, love how upbeat it is and I like her vocals on this. Can absolutely see how it was hugely influential to post punk. Would put this on of my own volition for sure
Decent album I enjoyed it
1.23.24
Not my favourite album in the world. Totally understand it's meant to sound like this, but some of the tracks are just hard to listen to, sore ears and that. Appreciate the artist and the post punk sound but just not for me.
Proper post-punk
Never was a huge fan even though I loved the genre but this first album actually appeals to me. Way more punk than her later music. Lots of seeds of the British post punk movement in there as well. Heard some early Cure sounds. 3.0
Kraftmikið og rífur aðeins í sálina.
The start of something magic
Pretty cool post punk feeling female fronted band. I remember hearing them for the first time in this cool bar called the cuevita in highland park with a cool bartender who was playing them who was super nice. Very joy division.
real pure \"post punk/wave\" album - no way you listen too this for the first time and realize it is 1978, such an influential album. I enjoyed. Classic Beatles cover!!!!
3,5/5
siusiu u babci
I really loved their other album but this one didn't quite do it for me in the same way. I found it a bit more repetitive and indistinct
Pretty good but nothing amazing. I do like Siouxsie and the Banshees but they aren't a band that I choose to listen to that often, just the odd song that comes up.
Decent album. Always liked a lot of SATB stuff, but never really a full album.
Entertainment.
Looking forward to this one!! You can hear the influence they had on some of my favourite bands like Radiohead, the cure and joy division. Cutting edge stuff for the late 70s.
This album was really cool - very cool to think what a big impact this sound had on heaps of other bands I love! Fave track: Hong kong garden
3.5/5
British rock that has a punk flavor to it. Noise rock would probably be the best way to describe it. I didn't mind it, but I'm not risking it to buy it.
I never really listed to Siouxsie and the Banshees. Interesting to realize there are echoes of Siouxsie in many bands that came after her: the Cure, Joy Division, Sonic Youth, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Interpol… not something I’ll Listen to again but I’m glad I listened today!
I didn't like the singer very much.
Infectious POP, Good LP, But not Great, though the Energy is off the Charts
fine. no big winners. 3 stars
Standouts: Helter Skelter Others: Mirage, Mental Postcards (Mittegeisen), Jigsaw Feeling, Switch, Overground, Carcass, Suburban Relapse.
I can hear their influence in a lot of later punk bands, but not a lot of songs on this album that will stick with me.
A good post punk album had some cool song on the album that i saved.
A bit slow but well performed, this is probably dope live. woah 'Switch' is soooooooo good, its the same formula as their other tracks but something about it just comes together so right. PLUS THE SAX??
Post-punk. Ni fu ni fa.
Enjoyed this, very punk, very goth. A bit repetitive perhaps and no stand-out "wow" moments for me.
Been over a year since the first Siouxsie and the Banshees album. I was reading on Wikipedia that this album influenced Massive Attack - which I get, I found myself humming some Teardrop during one of this album's songs. Still, just a bit OK for me, wouldn't necessarily choose to listen again, like with Juju. It is better though, but not an additional star better. 2.7 for Juju, 3.4 for The Scream.
I didn't think this was as good as Juju, which feels like a lifetime ago. It was alright but I wouldn't go back for another listen. Highlights: Carcass Metal Postcard Hong Kong Garden
I enjoyed the last Siouxie and the banshees album we had, seems like a long time ago! I don't think I enjoyed this one quite as much, but still liked the sound. The cover of helter-skelter was arguably better than the original. Highlights Carcass Hong Kong garden 3.5 as I gave the other one a 4
typical Siouxsie
Boy you hear the seeds of Sleater Kinney on this record! I was immediately excited by what I was hearing, but it started to wear on me as it went on. I’ll love this one in spurts!
wtf is a souxsie
Another reasonable but not amazing album in the collection. Enjoyable but unlikely to revisit.
Unfortunately the vocals keep this otherwise quite attractive album from a higher score.
Schreeuwerige rockmuziek. ***
I understand its significance to the zeitgeist, but I didn’t enjoy the listen. It has a laid back punk sound/vibe that I couldn’t connect with.
I prefer the other Siouxsie and the Banshees album that was on this list to this one. This is a nice debut album and has significance in terms of the sound it helped to create. Overall though, I think they have stronger albums.
Very good, will need to listen again
Great guitars and drums but the vocals were a bit too shouty for me.
Bit waily. Liked the Helter Skelter cover
it's fine, another one of those post-punk gothic albums that don't do anything for me. it's at least more listenable than most of them though.
skoda ze nejde davat neco mezi 3 a 4
3.5
Ok
thought this would be just my cup of tea and i did like some of it but it wasn't quite my cup of tea
Good but not very good. When it's on form it's punky, edgy, angry and with hammering guitars and drums, but it strays a bit away from it at times and that doesn't impress me. 3, solid enough.
This is better than I expected - does get a bit screechy in places (although with a backing band called the Banshees, should really expect that), but in the most part it's punk with a bit more musical depth and tunefulness to it. Didn't like the Helter Skelter cover really, took a load of the energy out of it (which is unusual given how full of energy the rest of this album is). Solid album, not quite a 4 but pretty close.
One of those bands I had missed due to age and never looked at. Really enjoyed this album. It's funny how every generation thinks they invent new music when it's just a rehash of the old. Indie and grunge can thank these guys.
A really good one but not their best
banqué bastante al final. 7.5/10
Not the sort of vocalist I'd point to as a favourite, really, but she shines in this sort of aggressive, sharp soundscape offered by The Scream. This is still the sort of album I tend to appreciate more from a distance than face to face. It can be a little ugly, a little harsh, but damn, if it ain't influential.
I see that this week's theme is "Weaker albums by my favorite artists". Very influential record, but "Juju" and "Tinderbox" exist and blow it out of the water. Why is the foot on the cover so big.
It was an ok album, The Scream was definitely not a misnomer, along with the Banshees portion of the band's name. Full of noise rock and roll, there are elements of letting each instrument operate in their own space but together at the same time, yet also sounding as though they are all one instrument, which at times can be a slightly overwhelming. Best: Suburban Relapse Worst: Jigsaw Feeling 2.5 stars
The album was interesting. I was not familiar with the band or really any song besides the cover of Helter Skelter. I don't think I would revisit the album but I can definitely hear how this influenced other bands. I will round up.
Not bad. Not great. Enjoyed it but probably won’t listen again.
Not the easiest to listen to, but that's how it often is with post-x music. I'm not running back to this album, but it was very interesting to listen to this and consider how it influenced those after it in a similar genre like Joy Division and the Sonic Youth
First half was ok, the helter skelter cover wasn't great. Second half is meh, very forgettable.
This kind of music isn't my cup of tea, but it's ok.
3/5
I needed a 2nd proper listen to really hear the post punk Joy Division-inspiring sound. It really has punk energy with progressive rock sound from the cymbal-less tribal drums and screechy (in a good way) guitars. I gather it was genuinely a first of its kind among the straight forward punk records of ‘76-‘78, however I prefer the early ‘80s sound of JuJu with the other rhythm section.
57 of 1001 Siouxsie and the Banshees - The Scream Favorite Track : The Staircase Rating : 3 / 5 This is some punk I will come back and listen to again.
Distinct voice, early innovator.
Highlights: "Mirage," "Overground," "Jigsaw Feeling" As influential as this band was, they needed time to work out the sound. Specifically, they need McGeoch's guitarwork to bring some melodic interest, because Siouxsie tends to cling to a single note in her money range like her life depended on it. There are radical choices here, but minimal development or variation over the course of a song. It's almost all dreary drawn-out syncopated droning, with the unfortunate exception of the glitter of shockingly racist kitsch on "Hong Kong Garden". At least, this is a clear step from Patti Smith's gonzo secular ceremonies towards more bearable developments in genres that barely exist like New Wave and Post Punk.
Post-punk. Ni fu ni fa.
It was fine, didn't blow me away.
I could see this group being an influence of 80's women fronted punk/pop-punk groups. Music was pretty good.
It's fine. Siouxsie sounds like she's screaming her heart out to an empty bar.
Everything tastes like eyeliner.
I enjoyed it. Early goth, a fun Beatles cover, some amusing studio weirdness. Won't ever be a 'go to' for me, but I respect it.
Every song has at least one good idea, but none of the songs are good from start to finish. I think I understand what the appeal of this music is. The singing is very annoying, but the good parts are really good. I hear echoes of this album in the obvious Joy Division and Gang of Four etc., but also early U2 and later Dead Kennedys. Favorite song: overground, because it's the most consistent.
Yep, an important album by and important band but her voice has always grated on me. Should be my cup of tea but isn’t.
Helt okej.
See the beauty in it reflecting the angst in those days and like Siouxies Nico like way of singing. But just not for me.
I bought this when I was in HS and loved it. Doesn’t hit the same.
Quite entertaining
Not bad, but a bit repetitive
I want to like it, I really do. It's mostly upbeat, except for the silly avant-garde guitar work - but I just don't like her voice. Sorry.
Siouxsie and the Pekineesjes.
There's a good sound here but I'm a little indifferent to it.
Pretty good listen. Great punk vocals. T3B 1. The Staircase (Mystery) 2. Mirage 3. Helter Skelter
Interesting album. The cover of Helter Skelter was the highlight. Lots of punk influences. It wasn't bad
I should have paid closer attention while listening to this, so I'll have to revisit it. For now, it gets a 3.
Too influential to be just a 2, perhaps, but not good enough for a 4.
loved it! great mix of grungy and dark, guitars and bass are driving, performance is excellent. only downside is that the whole is not the most cohesive. can take some time to get into its rhythm but once its there its great. best tracks: carcass, suburban relapse, metal postcard
Charmig debut.
I can’t say that I was particularly excited for this album. I listened to Ju Ju by Siouxsie and the Banshees a month or so ago and wasn’t a fan. However, today is a new day with a different album so let’s listen! Songs I already knew: Honk Kong Garden Favourites: Honk Kong Garden, Jigsaw Feeling I did find this album more enjoyable to my previous experience. I can’t quite put my finger of why, but I just find the vocal style quite annoying. I didn’t realise until listening to this today that I was already vaguely familiar with Honk Kong Garden, but I did enjoy that song when it came on. Overall, this album is validating my thoughts that post punk doesn’t really do much for me in general. There are occasional songs that click with me, and a lot of songs that don’t.
Post punk, alternative, noise rock, great distortion in the intrumentation, pioneer in blending angular (larger interval jump) tones form the guitar with a bass in the background and drums resambling machines.
The drums and guitar are great. Always struggled with the vocals.
Nice debut album. Enjoy their sound.
Good stuff but I’m guessing this isn’t their best album? Sound is a bit unrefined at times. 3.5 stars
I avoided this band for a long long time, but now the time has come to check it out. This record, is a weird one folks, I'm sure there's a lot of people that can appreciate it, and maybe it takes a lot of time to discover it's beauty, but for me, it's quite a chore. After a first listen this record had a few moments that I liked, I can imagine this band might grow on me after more listens. Helter skelter, Mirage, Metal Postcard, Switch and Hong Kong Garden stood out the most. 6.5 out of 10
Feel about conflicted about the rating, another one of those where I wish for a 2.5, but since I did get some enjoyment out of it, I’ll bump it up to a 3
First 3 songs sucks, but the album gets way better after that. Good early punk that you can tell had influence on other bands. The Spotify biography was pretty interesting. Band members included sid vicious and Robert Smith of the cure.
Decent, seems overrated
I echo all the reviews that pitch this between a 2 and a 3. So rounding up or down is the dilemma. On balance I’m not revisiting this album unless you were in a discussion about Nile Rodgers. I will give a 2 ignoring his other contributions to music. Eg Bowie
I see the virtue but I just can’t stand those kinds of whiny loud out of tune vocals in rock settings.
Is alright.
Super clean electric guitar. Rough on the vocals. Could have been much more
It was an appropriate album for the season, good moody, gothic punk. Nothing jumped out and grabbed me like I wanted it to so 3 stars. Listen to La Luz instead and fuck you
It's Siouxsie so no suprises. Strong dominant drums with squeaks and squeals as vocal highlights. Either you like it or it is annoying, there is little space to be neutral here. I like it in limited doses - listening to a whole album in one go it gets annoying.
You can see where Souixie was getting ready to launch into the stratosphere with this album. While not as polished as later offerings, this is a good introduction.
3.8
Nice but not as good as I was expecting from this band.
Pretty good and obviously really influential. I feel I may have enjoyed this more if this was my first Siouxsie album but, having heard some of their later work, this one doesn't quite reach those heights
I've always enjoyed Siouxsie and the Banshees as a "song on a mixtape" kind of deal. Although I knew "Hong Kong Garden" in that capacity, I didn't know the rest of this debut album. There were definitely elements I liked here but maybe also some songs I'd skip. A whole album's worth can be a bit much to take, I think, but I’m definitely intrigued to hear more.
I thought I was familiar with this album somehow, but it all sounded new to me on this listen and not all that welcoming. So I may have simply forgotten whatever I did know because I didn’t really care all that much for it.
Never quite been my thing. I'm glad to have listened but am not completely won over.
Some good sound and decent songs at times.
2.5 rounded up because I was into it at points.
This had cool guitar, and I liked her vocal style, but her singing is a bit too repetitive and makes all the songs sound the same--but it was still pretty cool.
This was pretty good. I’d try to see them live
Coolish
For 1978, this is really amazing production putting it more in the sound of the 1990s than the late 1970s. It really is fantastic production. Especially the cool guitar sound. However, the songs really go nowhere. The vocals are irritating and make no song memorable and the music seems to be the same in each song making a decent run time seem like forever.
Generally I liked women in rock and while this wasnt bad, it was just a bit too messy and all over the place
I like this. Not my all-time favorite, but enjoyable for its time.
Not sure if I would have liked them when they came out. Not sure if I like them now.
-Just not a very interesting post-punk album. I feel like it sounds exactly like another band as well. Nothing really stood out through the album. Maybe a strong 3, which is pretty rough cuz most albums in this genre would easily get a 4
(3.5) Dope.
I had never heard a full album from this band prior, just singles. I had liked what I heard which makes sense as it fits a lot of my tastes and has been suggested listening for ages. I was somewhat disappointed to finally hear a whole album. It was pretty good, but bot compelling. I enjoyed it enough but wasn't super thrilled with much of it. I can still see the influence it had and I'm thinking maybe follow up albums were better. That Beatles cover was, to put it as dumb as I can: omgwtflol
An influential album for anyone that appreciates The Go Go’s, Smashing Pumpkins. Not polished greatness. Not ceiling breaking. An album made of solid enough stuff to stick around after it added its own layers to the post-punk world.
Good, but tiresome.
Fair
Seminal punk, and you can feel the energy, but the vocals are a bit monotonous despite their power.
Classic.
Probably pretty original / edgy when released. I liked it.
better than expected. good female vocals and makes me understand some potential redeeming qualities in noise rock. clearly influential.
A touchstone of new-wave, "The Scream" is very striking for a 1978 release. It could have easily been released ten years later as part of the noise-rock explosion, and would have still sounded fresh and relevant. In 2022, it's easy to see the influence this continues to wield: distorted angular guitars, unconventional progressions, thunderous drums, edgy semi-chanted vocals. On paper, it's everything I love... but not all of it played out as perfectly as I'd hoped. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of great stuff here. "Helter Skelter" is an absolutely inspired Beatles cover which unleashes the song's demonic potential. "Nicotine Stain" and "Mirage" are deceptively upbeat tracks, wearing the inner turmoil on their sleeves. But "Carcass" is the winner for me, telling the disquieting and original tale of a butcher (or serial killer?) falling in love with a slab of meat. Its final minute, all cacophony and freak-out with added handclaps, is a perfect frenzy. All of those tracks are great, but there are some that never really kick off as well. I ended up wishing they'd laid more into all-out aggression than some of the gloomier atmospherics. "Pure" is a bit of a nothing-opener, and "Overground" and "Metal Postcard" are just too dirge-like for me to get much out of. "Suburban Relapse" would have been a better closer than "Switch", which runs out of steam a bit towards the end. Some more catchy, lighter songs like the excellent single "Hong Kong Garden" (left off the original release) wouldn't have gone amiss, though I respect it may not have fit the band's vision for the album. Still, what works really works, and the band's overall style eclipses a lot of the weaker songs. Sioux is the perfect punk singer, hollering and yelping her way through each of the tracks with wild abandon. The drums are given a hypnotic, tribal feel: all toms and very few hi-hats or cymbals. Fascinating to find producer Steve Lillywhite honed this approach with Siouxsie and the Banshees a full two years before taking it to Peter Gabriel. Ultimately it's one I admired more than enjoyed: if I don't listen to it again for a while, I hope I'll come back with even more to get out of it.
The album is not the worst. I actually enjoyed the music but the screeching voice gets old really fast. Yes, I know it's called "The Scream" but punk is really not for me.
An album that was evidently revelatory to a lot of listeners in 1978, and whose influence on a lot of other musicians is something I obviously accept, but to be honest it doesn't do that much for me. Bigger and better things lay ahead for them.
Theres a lot going on here but im not sure id add it to my rotation
Samey, noisy, good but not great. Really surprised to hear the cover of Helter-skelter, and obviously knew Hong Kong Garden, but nothing else really grabbed me.
Lo-fi punk rock that's just interesting enough to be listenable while still serving as decent background music while I worked today. Will say the energy starts off strong on this one, but the arrangements and vocals became a bit repetitive about midway through - there are still some surprises on the back half, but nothing that blew me away.
Astonishing debut that set the style for Goth. Siouxsie and the Banshees were still finding their feet musically so the sound flits from punk to noise to something new entirely. It doesn't sound pretty in places and regardless of whether or not that was intentional, it does start to grate. Overall it is a good album and worthy of its praise just not one I would revisit regularly. Minus points for Helter Skelter, a terrible cover of a terrible song.
3.2
I've had a hard time connecting with this one. I fully appreciate how people could like (and conversely, could hate) this - it's so radically different and in 1978?? Man - almost unheard of. The part that I'm having most difficulty with is how can I like a lot of Gang of Four and Wire which I hear similarities but not this as much. Is it Siouxsie's voice? I appreciate and enjoy a lot of the non traditional aspects of this...the horror movie intro of "Pure"...the 5/4 time of "Overground" the almost but not quite straightforward "Carcass" - unique use of drums especially in that one, in that almost everything is on toms rather than the standard snare/kick. But then the album almost falls off a cliff... a song like "Metal Postcard" seems droning and doesn't hit the same promise as the songs in the first half of the record. "Nicotine Stain" and "Suburban Relapse" are just not good - bad atonal punk and the vocals are brutal. But then they come back with the excellent "Switch" and...? I have no idea how to rate this...my second time through I confess to starting to "get" this, at least the first half. I'll leave at this: this is not for everyone to be sure. I'll give big marks for being super unique and the best/mysterious songs are really worth a look, but overall it's not an easy listen. 6/10 3 stars for unique highs, but the lows are pretty low.
I feel basically the same way on this album as I did on the last Siouxsie and the Banshees album that came up on this list. I do appreciate the instrumentals, but the vocals are really grating to me and it's just not an enjoyable listen, it's uncomfortable to listen to but not in a good way. I can appreciate that this came out in the 70s so it is veery ahead of its time. Aside from that just not for me.
not bad
Decent punk sound but not something I'll add to my rotation
Good
Pretty good album, no real standouts but very enjoyable.
Liked "Overground", builds nicely and a little more melodic. Most lyrics are very dark, but seem to be congruent with the pulsing beats and thrashing guitars. Interesting to finally see them in the video for the last song.
I only know Siouxsie & The Banshees from a few songs ("Happy House"). This is definitely NOT that. I get the experimentation and where this influenced so many other punk bands, but like "Suicide" I can't imagine me listening to this very often. I had to totally pause when "Helter Skelter" came on because I just wasn't sure what that was. It's never good when a song is totally unrecognizable.
Yawn. It felt like the Velvet Underground (and imitators) all over again. Stripped down but trying to do something artsy and unique. Siouxsie had a long career and some decent songs, and they're part of the punk revolution and all, but I don't think they had the stuff to put together an entire album worth of songs worth listening to. Jigsaw Feeling and Switch were alright (each had neat style changes), Mirage was ok, and Carcass and Nicotine Stain had some life to them. The rest were forgettable. Even Hong Kong Garden, their big hit from this album, I don't see what the appeal is.
Not bad, not my style
I didn't understand the lyrics much, but it kind of works. I like the sound, but all of the songs were pretty much the same.
So much rock. So indistinguishable. I thought I had listened to it all.
Hadn’t been familiar with this group. Feels like an influential album for later punk music but perhaps a bit repetitive
So funny how much this sounds like sleater kinney at times. Love the sound but I found the album to feel long as a whole.
I have a Siouxsie and the Banshees "Greatest Hits" album. This album sounded like the band, but almost all of the tracks on this album were unfamiliar to me. I like the band, and some of their songs are tracks that I would replay. "Jigsaw Feeling" is the track that felt like a probable track to revisit. The album as a whole comes in at "okay".
7/10
I liked it, but it's too long for this type of punk/post-punk thing. The Beatles cover is interesting, but kind of the worst thing in the album.
Alright I suppose. Worst Beatles cover version I've ever heard.
Fun Fact: Jar Jar Binks was in the original line up.
It's a pretty decent early punk album but doesn't really grab me like her later post punk/goff incarnation.
A bit like The Pixies? Same vibe
I can appreciate this in theory, but I wasn't really in the right mood to enjoy it. The album reminds me of being a teen, when I had goth friends who would listen to Siouxie on scratched old LPs. That's a pleasant nostalgic feeling, but it's 2021 and I want to be sooooothed. Go on with your eyeliner.
Really tributes the name banshee, weird tunes
punk band with its own sound, great songs
A really good insight into the genre. A little dark in parts...
Enjoyed it. Bit grungy, loved the helter skelter cover. Carcass was a great track
Tempting to call it proto-Benatar, but not really fair, as Benatar debuted just a year later. Jefferson Airplane, but 70s. Proto-Florence + the Machine, then. Hard rock, almost punk, but more elaborate phrasing and chording vs. power chords and manic strumming. I didn’t like it yesterday when I had a migraine, but I quite like it today. I’m glad I gave it another shot.
Neither good nor bad, I wouldn’t mind hearing more of it but it’s not something I’m gonna go out of my way to listen to
An enjoyable album, admittedly background music more than much else for me.
Decent.
Hmm. I did enjoy the album, but I don't suspect it's one I'll be reaching for often.
Interesting but probably wouldn’t listen again
A bit raw for my ears, although I do love the post-punk movement, and this is very much the beginning of this.
Not terrible.
Not into it
Halfway through, and it's okay. Sort of alternative sound; nothing has really grabbed me yet. Probably 3/5. We'll see how songs 8-12 sound... nothing that special, or that bad
Pre-post-punk. Best Tracks: Jigsaw Feeling, Carcass, Suburban Relapse
"Overground--I'll be worse than me Overground--it's clear to me I'll be worse than me" (Overground) "Tell me, tell me, tell me, come on tell me the answer You may be a lover but you ain't no dancer" (Helter Skelter) No puedo decir absolutamente nada malo de unas personas que tienen esa pinta.
The album gets off to an epic start with the atmospheric intro and then the guitar lead-in to the second song. Overall the sound reminds me a bit of Joy Division - dark and muddy, like the production is an afterthought. The standout track for me is the last one, "Staircase", with its abundance of catchy guitar riffs, but based on Spotify listens, I'm the only one who thinks so. It wasn't even on the original vinyl release. 'Hong Kong' is clearly an attempt to get radio play, and I would have liked to been listening to UK radio in the era when it became a top ten hit.
A meritorious post punk record which would be much exceeded with subsequents efforts.
I thought I might kinda like this at first but then it just dragged on and on. Lands somewhere around a 5
This album is hard for me to enjoy. But I will give it a knowing nod for its groundbreaking post punk sound that influenced many bands that followed in the 80s. I used to think HK Garden was catchy and cute but it’s faux Asian melodies are now cringe worthy. It’s funny how mores change so much over time. Just like my musical tastes.
It was good. A little slow but I'm into this type of music so I could see myself listening again. I wouldn't be upset if I never heard it again though. It's the perfect example of middle of the road to me.
Another fun album from the Banshees. I don't think I liked it as much as the last one, but it's close. Metal Postcard is a favorite.
British post-punk.
meh dramatic is this who cranberries listened to first?
Talented and has some good tracks, but nothing outstanding. I think the vocals are mixed to be a little bit too quiet.
Meh. Neither here nor there.
Bad ass bitch music
I'd expected this to be good, and it was better. Really heavy in places. The Staircase is sick.
This feels like it was very influential on later post-punk, but I felt it didn't click as a whole for me, even though songs like "Hong Kong Garden" (which apparently wasn't on the original album) still hold up.
Maybe a bit too aggressive, but all right
I think it's been pretty well established that punk isn't my genre but I liked this better than anything else in that vein so far. Siouxsie Sioux pulls off the vocals in a style that usually grates for me.
Mirage- OOF! SWITCH! Major sleater kinney vibes off of this they must have inspired them. Go back to this when you want something messy and releasing I think
Souixsie Souixe has a very strong set of vocals. The album contains Hong Kong Garden which is has unique guitar riffs.
it was alrightttt
I like it, so far this list has done little other than solidifying my love for punk. This project doesn't sound super different than other punk albums, but it did come before many so it gets a pass. Favorite song helter skelter, 6/8.
3.5 hong kong and overground standouts.
Solid. Nothing stood out, but I didn't feel like turning it off. 2 and 1/2 if I could give it that.
Not bad. A bit more avant garde than I expected, considering what I've heard from them.
decent post punk album
Generally good, not a big fan of vocals.
After a week of apalling or uninteresting records to listen, the randomizer gives me an opportunity to delve further into the discography of Siouxsie which is something I had wanted to do in a while. This is a solid debut record and has some of their greatest hits. I do still find it inferior to Juju and Kaleidoscope but it is a good moment in their discography. 7/10 [SWAP]
Although it is a good band with a reputation and beautiful songs, this album did not make an impression.
Interesting but not at the top of my list of Siouxsie albums.
I know that post-punk isn’t for me, and this isn’t winning me over either. There’s barely any variance between the songs here, and it all feels kind of disjointed and one-note. I kind of want to give it a higher score because Siouxsie Sioux is so iconic, but I just think it’s really boring and shit. I’m not enjoying this at all.
New wave punk
I gave this a lot of time and was hopeful but I just find the album a bit depressing.
When I was 13, this was my best friend Michael's favorite album. Until now, I've refused listening to it simply to spite him. Good thing, because Michael moved to Seattle, overdosed on heroin and die, so this is probably dangerous gateway music
Worst version of Helter Skelter that I’ve ever heard.
This was an album I wanted to like more than I did. I’ve never been much of a fan of theirs, even though I “should” be given my musical taste. Her voice has always grated on me and that’s where the problem lies with today’s listen as well. Musically I like them very much. But her vocals are just too much. There were a couple of songs I enjoyed regardless, and they were Overground and Hong Kong Garden.
A little more abrasive with more wailing than I need.
Not their best album.
This was actually fairly horrible to be honest. I had really high hopes that this would at the very least be challenging but interesting, but not really. There are decent moments in it, and to be fair they weren't to know that 50 years on I'd be marking them down for taking liberties with a cover of Helter Skelter. But overall, I think I'll file them as a good thing to exist, but not one I'll be listening to. To paraphrase Hansel from Zoolander reviewing Sting: The music that they make - I don't listen to it. But the fact that they're making it - I respect that.
Not my cup of tea
I really despise this style of vocals. The shouty sort of half singing that always feels out of key. The instrumentals are extremely basic and don’t stand out in any way. At least there’s a Beatles cover in there.
The album got better as it went on I thought. Didn't like the first few songs, felt they were a bit whiny. After helter skelter it got better
After listening to this album you are definitely going to feel sad. And maybe even a little mad. It’s the dark side of New Wave.
This may have been the birth of metal or just a song about a metal postcard?
2.5
Musically not bad. Good guitar work and driving bass and drum. Vocally not very appealing. Highlights: Hong Kong Garden 2.2
kinda flat but i see the vision
Little weird. Not really my thing
There are a number of albums on this list that are great instrumentally and are completely ruined by the singing. This is one of those albums.
It was rough, but not overly awful. Jigsaw Feeling, Switch, and Mirage were actually decent songs. Her voice was kind of annoying and some of those riffs were so bad that they actively pissed me off! Overall, I’d give this album a 2.2/5! 💪😡👊!
The 2nd half was better than the first
Thought I would like it, but did not enjoy
Fine
I like Siouxsie & The Banshees and really got into some of their more mainstream stuff in the 80's. This is rougher and darker by comparison and her voice isn't quite as enjoyable. If "Jigsaw Feeling" is one the most listened to song on the album (2.65M) my work here may be done. It's a long way from catchy with no hook. "Carcass" is a glimmer into what they will become a few years later but it's still unpolished. "Helter Skelter" is an angry (and sloppy) take on a classic. "Nicotine Stain" could have been a cool song, it's just so messy. "Hong Kong Garden" is on their greatest hits and has 47M listens, it's the best track on the album but that's not a genuine compliment. This doesn't deserve a spot on the Top 1001. Sloppy is the word that comes to mind, this is raw like a punky garage band in a club. Later in their career they really got tight and focused on the music, I find it hard to get into these songs. They didn't break any new ground, there's no hits, perhaps influential, but not worthy of the T1001. 2 stars, but that's generous.
Post-Punk remains the worst punk. There are a few half decent ones on here so it's not a 1.
Meh. Some songs are ok-ish.
It just didn't click for me, i didn't like the attitude of the voice that much but the band knows how to make music overall. Fav. track: The staircase (mystery)
Was digging it at 1st, but started to feel more like banshees wailing as it went on.
Uh, I mean, don’t know. Listening to this I can easily hear how so much of the music I love was influenced by this - Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo, The Cure. Thing is this is too much art not enough rock. The ideas and approaches are interesting but the songs are just not all that great. I’m thinking two stars tedious listen.
This 1000% deserves to be heard. That doesn’t mean I liked it.
It was fine, not really in the mood for it today
No thanks
The last track, Switch, was a pleasant change after mostly dull songs. Don’t love her voice.
