not on spotify but i wont hold that against it. i found it pretty easily on youtube-though i wish that i hadnt. if you make the same mistake of listening to it, be sure to turn on incognito mode so youtube doesn't recommend you more of this lifeless drivel.

Great album to fall asleep to! 4/10

Pleasant until it becomes dull.

bad liquor was -- ondanks titel-- goed... rest was nogal slaapverwekkend

Was excited to finally get something I’ve never heard of, turns out there’s a good reason for that. Bang average dime a dozen boring middle of the road rock that should nowhere near any best albums list. There’s not a memorable or interesting song on it.

Ehh?? California was easy enough to listen to, but it muddled together too well. It contained indie rock but also dream pop and country, all which made for a smooth listen. The only remarkable thing about this album is that it belongs more in the mid-aughts, so kudos to American Music Club for being so ahead of the curve in 1988. Also, what a boring and generic band name.

Wikipedia describes this album as "indie Americana", and I think that's a perfect genre label. That said, what comes with such territory is a label of "kind of bland". Like so many albums that tread this space, it was inoffensive, but ultimately pretty unremarkable. Coming out in 1988, it does feel ahead of its time, but that just isn't quite enough to win me over. 2.5-ish, not enough to want to round up.

very hard to access as an album, not on streaming, sounded good, enjoyed a couple tracks, not bad but i won’t be listening to it again

Started off interesting then it kinda became generic, probably won’t revisit anytime soon

This is like, your uncle's band playing at your other cousin's wedding as a favor to some other relative that in hindsight was a huge mistake. Personal enjoyment: 2/5 Relevance to this list: 1/5

Hard to believe this is from 1988. Sounds like bland music from the mid-70s, not very well executed. Not great vocals, inane lyrics, derivative music. There are many different reasons for me to disagree that an album should be on this list. It’s the not good ones that are also not innovative that annoy me the most.

Damn, what a borefest

Has moments but the country tinged elements bring the whole thing down for me. I wish it would've rocked out more.

Obscure indie band, almost empty Wikipedia page, very few Youtube views. Could be interesting, could be boring as heck which would explain its obscurity. Keen on at least giving it a chance, but admittedly feeling a bit skeptical. Going into this with somewhat diminished expectations. Hoping to be surprised. Firefly Very average. The steel guitar gives it a distinguished sound at least. Lyrically it's pretty cliché, lacking anything that really sticks out. Has a repetitive guitar riff that gets a bit tiring after a while, luckily the song is short. Flat drums. Average. 2.5/5 Somewhere Muddled, abrasive vocals. Kinda like the electric guitar on this track, though the acoustic guitar kinda overwhelms it. Average chorus. The writing on this song isn't terrible. Average. 2.5/5 Laughing Stock It's alright I suppose. Has some cute moments, specifically in the buildup to the chorus. The acoustic guitar is pretty pleasant, and some of the lyrics are decently memorable. I did enjoy the instrumental outro, though the full stop ahead of it wasn't executed too well making it feel a bit awkward. Fine. 3/5 Lonely I don't know how to phrase this so I'll just be blunt about it: That was a bit shit. Whiny and annoying vocals. Standard issue misanthrope anthem with a bland instrumental and boring writing. Awful. 1/5 Pale Skinny Girl Hoplessly forgettable. Builds up into nothing. Has a few moments where something is almost going on, but they sort of just peter out into thin air. Is fairly inoffensive if a tad boring. Dislike. 2/5 Blue And Grey Shirt Sounds sincere. The lyrics held my attention, and the vocals did a decent job making them feel alive. Pleasant, the steel guitar helps. A bit too bare bones to be anything special. Fine. 3/5 Bad Liquor An unexpected but welcome change of energy. An alright piece of garage rock with a spirited vocal performance and some cool blaring harmonica. I like the impact the drums make. A bit on the short side. Bonus points for switching it up. Fine. 3/5 Now You're Defeated Has a lot of character. The vocalist is reall belting out those lyrics which do sound quite sincere and untarnished. The cpuntry adjacent instrumental adds to a kind of drunken atmosphere, which while sounding a bit amateurish creates a bit of a visual for the song. Not too exciting, yet not terrible. Fine. 3/5 Jenny Cringe lyrics. Uncomfortable vocals. By the numbers instrumental. Feels breathy and undercooked. Awful. 1/5 Western Sky An alright piece of songwriting. Quite like the picture painted by the lyrics, feels visually striking. Performed in perhaps the most boring way possible. While it's not completely uninteresting it fails at being anything worth revisiting. Average. 2.5/5 Highway 5 Has some decent buildup. Quite enjoyed the noisy background guitar with its squeals and heavy effects. The vocalist tries to be dynamic with his voice, but it just ends up sounding odd. Wish they put some more emphasis on the drums in the buildup. Fine. 3/5 Last Harbor The vocalist has neither the charisma or vocal ability to alone carry such a sparse song leading to quite a boring and unsatisfying listen. I'll give some credit to the lyrics, as they're again pretty distinctly written. However no lyrics can save this absolute snoozefest of a track. Dislike. 2/5 Nothing. This album made me feel absolutely nothing. It's hard to say anything interesting about something so uninteresting. The one thing I'll give it is that it sounds quite real. As in there's not a single moment of insincerity on this, which is quite refreshing coming from the ultra processed musical landscape of today. This really comes across in the lyrics, that while wonky at times do have a unique and singular quality to them. While listening to this one can clearly tell the writer really poured their soul into some of these lines. You can tell the band is doing their best to fulfill a vision of sorts. The result... Something quite boring, which also fails at being meaningful or clever. While they try their hand on a few different styles none of them seem to stick the landing, leading to a bit of a messy and undercooked result. I'm also struggling a bit with the lead singer's voice as it at times sort of just meshes with the background noise and at other times it's just bad. I wish there was a bit more to this thing, but as it stands it's just completely forgettable. 2.5/5 Rounded down to a 2/5

Their third album. Somewhere is a decent track, a bit cheesy. The kind of tune that'd be in an 80s high school movie during a montage sequence. Hhhmm... a pretty bland album. There's nothing awful about it, however it doesn't grab my attention anywhere along the way either. I like my toast with butter and or jam. This is plain brown dry toast.

This was...just ok...? I don't really remember anything about it, honestly. It's really spaced out and sparse in parts. It has some really genuine moments, some moments that seem authentic and inspired. But I'm sorry - "You're so pretty baby/you're the prettiest thing I've known" is such a bad, corny ass line that it really set a bad tone for me and this album. There may be some cool moments but at its core, this is basic, boring overly-safe soft rock that somehow found its way onto this list. That doesn't mean it's bad for what it is, it's just boring. Two stars. Standout Tracks: Bad Liquor

What is this, Aldi brand Bruce Springsteen? (Bryce Sprangstien).

Dear Robert Dimery or whoever wrote this book, please stop wasting my time. This definitely isn't a bad album. But, (I've said this on another review and I'll say it again), if you're gonna make a list like this so USA+UK focused, you might as well pick the best of the best, not mediocre third tier artists like this. So much of amazing music from all around the world is being overlooked in favour of...this. Would I revisit: no.

i really like the healthy dose of folk in american music club and ive listened to everclear and the golden age before both of which i enjoyed. those albums would probably get a weakish to middling 4 from me, but this is such a weird album to pick out of their discography. it almost feels like it was picked solely because it got banned or something? it didnt review terribly well compared to their other releases and seems pretty unknown. i dunno, it just seemed a bit more milquetoast than other records by the band, and you know i HATE not listening to a band's best release...

I listened to this album 3 times and can't remember a single second of it. I'm sorry. It's embarrassing, how am I meant to review an album i literally can't remember. Every time it finished Will Smith came into whatever room I was in and memory wiped me. It's fucked. I'm trying so hard. I pulled the album up again and put it on while writing this review. I paused it and forgot what I was listening to. How cunt. Obviously, im taking the piss. Mid and forgettable, and in many cases that's worse than being bad. Or maybe it isnt. Cause atleast with this I don't look at the title and cringe at the thought of having to listen to it again like other albums i rated similarly (ZZ Top im looking at you) 4/10

Það var maus að ná að hlusta á þessa plötu. Lögin voru samt fín áhlustunar en ekkert sem stóð upp úr samt sem áður. Dreg hana niður fyrir að gera mér erfitt að hlusta á hana höfundaréttarlega séð

This has been the hardest album to track down on the list so far—and I’ve gone through over 500 of them. So naturally, my expectations were high. I’d never heard of American Music Club or their album California before, even though I’m a huge indie fan. It’s always exciting to discover hidden corners of American indie, so I was curious to see what this one had to offer. In some respects, California feels ahead of its time for a late ’80s release. There are some genuinely strong moments—tracks like "Somewhere" and "Lonely" stand out with their haunting melodies and thoughtful lyrics. That said, the album as a whole leans heavily into a slow, somber tone. At times, it feels like it drags—not in a meditative or emotionally deep way, but in a way that risks losing the listener’s attention. Perhaps the pace is intentional, aiming to evoke a certain mood, but for me, it didn't always land. There’s a definite hint of Morrissey in the vocals—an interesting touch—but it’s not enough to carry the album through its more lackluster stretches. Favorite Tracks: Somewhere, Lonely, I also enjoyed Bad liquor. It was heavier and different than anything else on the album Least Favorite: Pale Skinny Girls is one of the duller moments, though it’s not alone. A few tracks share that same uninspired feel. Album Artwork: I really like the cover. It has a quiet, evocative quality that suits the album’s tone. In summary, while California has some standout moments and a certain nostalgic charm, I think there are stronger indie records waiting in the ’90s.

The one song that was semi interesting got cut off on the YouTube video of the album. Its not on spotify and frankly, no big loss.

It's interesting that this was released earlier than folks like Sufjan Stevens or other 90s alt or 2000s indie rock. Interesting doesn't equal good, though. 2/5

if it's not even on YouTube music, let alone spotify, it can't be that good

Not terrible but very dull

Soft, guitar focused, typically wailed or quiet male vocals, “rubber band” in nature - soft to loud to soft. Firefly was my fave. Gave a beach relax almost high school nostalgia guitar feel.

Blant, boring, unremarkable.

Gosh, it was just a lot of meh.

Nah- this could be removed.

Sicket sömnpiller.

dollar store jimmy buffet

Sounds like the counting crows guy joined XTC. A couple decent songs. -1 for not being on Spotify (everyone knows the rules)

Another one of those obscure bands I never heard of. This is a mix of country and rock songs, which apparently were a hit in the UK. However they were not a big hit with me. Totally forgettable.

Pretty torn on this album. There were two songs I liked a lot, Now You’re Defeated and Jenny, but the rest of the album didn’t do much for me.

Not bad but terribly average. Absolutely nothing memorable at all here

Exceptionally pedestrian. Was this whole list a scheme to get people to listen to this one album?

Boring, but not awful.

2- Stars (4/15)

Male grungy Americana - pretty conventional

From 1988 but it could sound like an indie band from 2009. Weird haha

Only album I haven't listened to as it wasn't available on Spotify

As much as I wanted to like this album, there just wasn't enough there to hold my attention.

Gets a little bit better as it goes, but that was too little, too late for me.

What am I supposed to do with this?

That one was especially boring and generic and I cannot see people caring about this album in 2025.

Pretty good, but in a way that I don't want to return to this. I enjoyed it for what it was though.

its aight but quite uneventful

A mixed bag. The songwriting is really good, the performance lush but precise, nice arrangements and all. But the singer really destroys it. I mean he sounds like me, just meh. As if they werde demoing for a singer audition . There is enough rootsy stuff in it to make it a somewhat digestible experience, but somewhat is not what I am expecting from this list.

not horrible but pretty unremarkable and just sort of irks me for some reason i can't quite put my finger on

The American Music Club is yet another band that I’d never come across before. The band name is a little uninspired, which I did find to be a fair reflection of the music itself. It wasn’t horribly bad by any means, but it just felt somewhat boring. It was ok to have on while studying, but I know that if I was focusing in on the music as the main point of concentration, then this would have been a difficult album to get through. It’s like a soft country folk rock, but without anything interesting really happening.

It was good but not one I will go back to I think

I'm about to be a little harsh on this album, honestly I think it's perfectly fine, there were multiple songs on here that I have positive opinions on, the opener Firefly, Somewhere, Bad Liquor, Now You're Defeated and Highway 5 thanks to the guitar work. But that simply meant I thought the songs were 6's rather than the rest which were 4's. Competently made, perfectly listenable, inoffensive, but not interesting. 2 stars.

Wasn't on Spotify, so had to hunt it down on YouTube (not even YouTube Music), and kinda wish I hadn't, its pretty mid despite its inherent jangly-ness.

I barely noticed this album as it passed by (I temporarily came out of my stupor as the song "Bad Liquor" came on, which was fairly decent).

From the jump, I was not inclined to like this album. I mean, I see that someone on Wikipedia has labelled this album as "slowcore," and already I'm expecting the worst. With a name like "slowcore," you may as well just come out and tell me "this album is boring." The only genre label I've seen lately that outmatches it for "Oh, this is gonna be no fun at all, isn't it?" is gosh-darn "**sad**core." But, hey, hey now, that's just a genre name. I had no idea what it could even sound like. So, take a breath, procrastinate a day on playing it, and actually give it a chance. You never know; I might actually really dig it. And for the first couple of minutes, yeah, I was. It's not anything I'd go nutso over, and I'm not 100% with this guy's voice — there's **way too many times** it nearly verged into "I'M SO IMPORTANT SUCH A GOOD WRITER; PLEASE TAKE ME SERIOUSLY" but just narrowly stayed in "Like... Sure, fine? Whatever?"... But the backing instrumentals and melodies were all nice. Some pretty country-ish stuff; I'm down for this. I could maybe take a whole album of stuff like this, even if there's some quirks I hafta deal with... But then "Bad Liquor", the album's "big rocker," hit. Until this point, I was tryna fight off the easy thought of "Maybe this album sucks, actually?" Like, I'm giving it an honest chance; let's leave my knee jerk "I don't like the name 'slowcore'" reaction to the side for a moment and see if it's actually justified or not, eh? But with "Bad Liquor", the question mark in that thought turned into a flat period, and nothing else that happened the rest of the album could change my mind. Seriously, past "Bad Liquor", the album got interminable. The kind of experience where I'm desperate to see how much time is left, 'coz the album's such a slog that I feel like I'm trapped. Besides "Bad Liquor", it just never gets terribly interesting. Even the few songs I saw people in my group highlight as good ones didn't do much for me. It's just the same "who cares"/"whatever" over and over and over again. After I was done listening to this album, I hadda put on blink-182's CALIFORNIA so I could remember what an album I **like** with that state's name sounded like. (What kind of a name for a group is "American Music Club," by the way? Is this some LOVE LIVE! 'Japanese Idol Club' thing? Honestly, it gathers nearly enough irrational bother in me as The United States Of America did, but not enough to go on about it beyond this aside.) So... Aw, heck, I'm at a 2. There's not enough in here that I dislike that I'd give it a 1, but goodness me, I'm never gonna listen to it again. California, as a state, has and deserves better than this — and in fact, maybe "slowcore" does, too.

Reveal reaction: Never heard of this band. But it's never a good thing when the album of the day isn't on Apple Music of Spotify. I found it on Bandcamp. So, I should append "unfortunately" to the last sentence. The album starts with some very severe slide guitar. I had to stop it and check wikipedia to make sure I wasn't going to accidentally listen to some country music because fuck that. Either way, the first song is country adjacent trash. The second song is better. Very indie alt-rock, sort of like The Lemonheads. What follows is a very mixed bag. There are some songs that are sparse, elegant and beautiful, like Jenny, but more often, the songs are boring, cookie-cutter facsimiles of better artists' music. I found myself swinging wildly between a 2 star and 3 star review here because there are several songs that are actually pretty damned good - the aforementioned Jenny being the pick of the bunch. but there are songs that are infuriatingly boring slogs. 2.5 would be the right play here, if we had half stars.

Like a more-boring American Crowded House complete with 1988 production. This definitely includes some songs that could have been legitimately nice without that dated reverb everywhere, but docking 1 full star due to "Bad Liquor" being unequivocally one of the worst songs I've heard in some time. 5/10 2 stars

If I invested sufficient time into this band, and the lyrics in particular, I expect I'd appreciate them more (judging by the YouTube comments those that like them *really* like them). However, from my two listens today I clocked three or four nice songs, and nothing that stood out as revolutionary or 'must-hear'. 2.5

Too dreary an album to bring in the new year. They invoke bands like The Smiths and The Go-Betweens. I thought the opener "Firefly" was alright, but after a few more tracks it really started to drag. It's listenable, but not to my liking at this time, I need to be in a certain mood to get into this.

couldn't listen to it

I could only listen to this on my phone's speakers, so let's say that's the reason the album sounded so bland, limited and tuneless.

Kind of a not so good Wilco/Dawes sound. Few decent songs but otherwise, spent the album wondering why it's on the list.

Truly the most bland derivative shite ever put to tape. Ironic how someone with no musical taste wrote a book about albums to hear before death.

Three weeks passed between listening and writing this review. I remember absolutely nothing about this album. Was about to listen again until I recognized the top review, which reminded me that I have actually already listened to it and found it boring.

Meh I did enjoy more than dislike Rating: 2.5

Not remembering this one, I predict, it’s not doing it for me. It’s fine-fine but not enough. ‘Blue and Grey Shirt’ has got something, at least, and, okay, ‘Bad Liquor’ came as a surprise. All the good songs on the backend. It’s the ‘Western Sky’ that I like, and ‘Last Harbor,' too. But not much, honest.

Spotify doesn’t bother with it. Tried a few on YouTube. It’s like picking out an American Fatima Manaions. But FM are much better

Note: This album is not on Spotify, but it is on YouTube. I don't know what qualifies this album to be on this list, it's largely forgettable with songs that are bland and anti-climactic. The only commentary on it from wiki is one reviewer said the album is the band's "definitive statement", and if that's truly the case, are they really worth listening to if this is their most defining album? Absolutely undeserving of being on a list of this nature

This California does not know how to party.

Of all the albums on this project that are only findable in YouTube, this is the most tolerable one I've heard so far. That said, it's nice, but nothing new.

This wasn't as bad as my first impression of it, but it's another puzzling inclusion. Never heard of them and going by the Wikipedia blurb alone, it doesn't seem like a lot of people have, other than Arnar. 11 five star reviews in over 11000 votes is pretty bad, given how tame and inoffensive this is. This has to be middest album of all. There are some alright atmospheres and songs here in the vein of Pale and Skinny Girl but the whole album is as if you have a drawer full of spices - Springsteen, Talk Talk, REM and some others in the back, probably expired - and after two years of cooking you clean it for the first time. That stale residue in the drawer's corners is this music. So I'm at loss as to why it's here. Taking a spot that should belong to Low, if we're talking about 𝘚𝘭𝘰𝘸𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘦. Or to Talk Talk's \"Sprit of Eden\". Or to... so. many. others. I'm mad now.

I only listened to a couple of songs because the YouTube ads annoyed me way too much. But what I’ve heard was not mine. But since I only listened to a couple of songs: 2

No thanks. Just not for me.

I can see potential, but somehow it misses the mark.

Couldn’t find this album but I did listen to a greatest hits (essentials) album by them. Meh. Nothing special.

I didn't have the day or headspace to give this a deep listen. It sounded fine but quickly felt like background music. If I found out this is actually great and I need to revisit, I wouldn't be the most surprised. One of my worst listen days so far

It not being on Apple Music is a pain. They sound okay but so do a lot of other bands not on this list. Another one of those bands that I question why they are on here.

not available on iTunes, or Spotify. finally found 1 track on YouTube & it was pretty meh, so gave up trying to find the rest.

was psyched to find something completely new to me (never heard of it!) but it just reminded me of better things (country feedback, evan dando's gram parsons obsession).

Ei tarjonnut ihmeellistä kyytiä. Laimea ja tylsähkö.

Ei jääny mieleen. Taisi olla aika perushuttua

Not on Spotify can’t be too important, sorry nerds

1,001 albums that will make you want to die, entry #512.

Not on streaming, spotify atleast, so it required finding it elsewhere. I liked a few songs, the music is good, but I don't know if i'll revisit this one.

Generic lyrics Forgettable eighties rock Mostly broad dullness

Did not enjoy.

Underwhelming Americana.

Went inside a building to check in and it kept playing in the truck. I didn't mind that I missed any of it. Generous 2 stars

Hadn't heard this before and it's decent, not available on Spotify at time of writing this and not easy to find for a decent price in uk, so I doubt I will be listening to it anytime soon.

Listening to one of the most average sounding albums and then suddenly Pale and Skinny Girl happens. The last two songs were also fine

I skipped over this album 50 reviews ago because I couldnt listen to it during my commute (due to region locked content) but now that I have finally remembered and gotten around to listening to it I can confidently say that I didnt miss out on anything

I don't know if it was because of the youtube upload I listened to, but this sounded like there really wasn't all too much happening throughout. 2/5

A bit of a snoozer but it's something to listen to. Like many albums on this list, I can absolutely see how this was important at the time, but the staying power just isn't there.

We have Bruce Springsteen at home.

First listen. Meh.

I haven't heard of this band and frankly struggle to see why it's included on the list. The Wikipedia page quotes an Icelandic newspaper's review. No offence to Iceland here, but it does feel a bit like they could have found a more well known publication for a review of a band that's within this list. Having said that, I can definitely imagine this album being an early influence on Sigur Ros, albeit within the same level of innovation. The music isn't bad, just not the level I'd expect for this generator. I like 'Blue and Grey Shirt' and 'Highway 5', but much of this was a bit forgettable unfortunately. It's nice enough as calming background music though.

Impossible to find, and thoroughly uninspiring when you get there.

Basic, reductive, predictable. I don't feel your pain, dude.

I started off optimistic but that soured by the end of track 3. For some reason I couldn't shake the thought that this album sounds like Uncle Tupelo if they weren't particularly good. Maybe it's just the cold medicine talking.

Not bad. Easy listening.

I don't remember much about this album after listening to it. There's nothing particularly bad about it, but nothing overly good or interesting either. Very eh. I'd give it a 2.5 if I had the option to.

Had to use YouTube to listen to this album. It was….ok, I guess? 2/5

A style of music that's hyper-American, both in name and in substance. The genre is a laid-back country blues, which can have its merits in the music world, but American Music Club doesn't really cut it here. The playing is (for the most part) low-energy, often to the point of sounding lazy. The vocal enunciation is similar, and I'm not a big fan of the singing. Probably the main highlight is the sparkling acoustic guitar lines in tracks like Lonely, Firefly, and Jenny. The ballads in this album are also worth a shoutout, not necessarily for standing out sonically, but for having some great lyrics. Pale and Skinny Girl, while very forgettable in terms of sound, has some pretty haunting poetry in there. The closing song, Last Harbor, is actually a surprisingly solid and mature finale to an album that didn't deserve such a thing. A lot of reviewers are bringing up the fact that this isn't on Spotify. While that isn't usually a fair "criticism" of music, it is in this case – because even on YouTube, the songs don't have many views. And for good reason. 2/5 Key tracks: Firefly, Lonely, Last Harbor

Shit was pretty boring. Will not revisit. Best track was Jenny, and that just sounded like a Elliot smith b-side from disc two of a deluxe package reissue

This shit corny as hell

Fuck you for making me go to YouTube to listen to this garbage. Fuck you

Forgotten for a reason.

American Music Club’s album California presents a fascinating blend of melancholic rock and introspective lyrics. It took me a few tracks to fully appreciate the band's sound, but songs like “Laughing Stock,” “Pale Skin Girl,” “Blue and Grey Shirt,” “Jenny,” “Western Sky,” and “Highway 5” stood out as particularly engaging. The album shines in its slower tracks, where the guitar work adds a compelling depth that enhances the mood. There's a noticeable resemblance to the early styles of Counting Crows and Bruce Springsteen, though I personally find both of those influences more appealing. Despite these strengths, the album falls short for me due to my mixed feelings about Mark Eitzel’s vocals. While there are moments where his voice complements the music, overall, it often felt out of sync with the instrumental backdrop. Although California is not an album I’d place on my top lists, it certainly has its moments of merit and would appeal to fans of introspective rock.

When you hear a band name like Soundgarden or Smashing Pumpkins, you're intrigued to find out what they sound like. The creative name lends one to assume the music is equally creative. Enter American Music Club, which sounds more like a Sears catalog of music, or a group you can join to get your first 12 CDs for only a penny. And helping to prove my earlier point, the music is as basic and sterile as the band name itself. Upon first hearing the name, I wondered which version of America I'll be getting: Willie Nelson America, Wilco's alt-country from the big city of Chicago America, Lee Greenwood America, Simon and Garfunkle black turtleneck America . . . The America I got was more like the white sweater on the back of a polo shirt, with the sleeves draped forwards over the shoulders of an ivy league frat brother making sure not to forget to bring his tennis racquet onto the sailboat this weekend. Not really what I'd call California. The closest association my mind can make between what I'm hearing and what I assume they're shooting for is perhaps lazily driving past rows and rows of grapes of numerous vineyards on a golden-tinged afternoon through Napa Valley. At best, the album is sublime, working a bit beneath what is presented up front, most notably on "Lonely" and "Jenny." The raucous "Bad Liqour" breaks up the sleep album, thank God. Not that it's incredible, but it finally shows variety. More of this, please! Contributing to the laziness is the instrumentation. Just chords--basic ones at that--with no real contribution to melody. I just need to say "the opening guitar lick to Nirvana's 'All Apologies'" and you know exactly the melody I'm speaking of. You hear it, and you know immediatly the song that is playing. California is missing such notable instrumentation. But this is 1988; perhaps they were going for a U2 "With Or Without You" vibe. But even then, U2 created so much atmosphere in the sound where it wasn't just chords but tension and release and drone and feedback. It's minimal, and it's done right. Maybe this list 1001 should have been 501; there seems to be many examples of filler for the sake of hitting their numerical goal. Meanwhile, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is not on the list at all. :(

This was just ok. I didn't really see too much that was special about it to where it would need to be on this list. I'd never heard of them before listening to this album. On some songs the singer has a bit of a Morrissey quality to his voice. The band name is a bit generic too.

The only song that was interesting at all was Bad Liquor. This is the type of Indie music that made me hesitant to listen to Indie music of the aughts.

Listened to everclear instead

okay, didn't blow me away. Probably won't listen again. Probably 2.5

Indie rock, americana. Rollo. Un 2.

Not particularly interesting

After some digging around I found the full album. It wasn’t worth it

No. Besides Jazz, this is the kind of music I dislike the most. Indie with a country twang and whiny vocals. None of the songs grab my attention. They just exist. And shouldn’t be on any list.

Boring inessential soft rock.

California is bang average, listenable without doing anything especially skilled or memorable, the sort of stuff you could hear on generic radio or in random TV shows that accompanies a much more interesting story or journey. 2.

Another pretty nothing album. Country pop rock, nothing notable about it - maybe you could claim that it was ahead of its time, as it sounds a bit like some stuff that comes to the fore in the 2000s, but really it's more like early 70s country/folk rock. And it's less good than most of that (and we've had a lot). 2/5.

nit auf spotify

A good album, nice for background music.

What a disappointment. Maybe. It's hard to do this thing justice - listening to a youtube video playlist with random minute-long silence and different audio quality on each track doesn't reflect well on any work. What I did get really lacked any kind of substance. Clumsy metaphors, lacklustre singing, boring musical choices - it's an amateur effort at indie music. And I will judge it harshly for this. You can't just throw a random pub rock indie band on the list and call it a day. There was literally an entire scene of indie music in Dunedin at this time that was inventing the grunge genre and this list completely ignores them. Another annoying entry in a generally pretty terrible list.

I didn’t really like it. It was kinda weird. Meh

Wow, this is such mediocre country influenced pop/rock. I wouldn't be so critical, but it is on the 1001 list. I'd really like to know why. I've heard acts in my home town that are much better than this. Mediocre.

This list makes me feel like I'm taking crazy pills. There's nothing particularly BAD about this, but it is wholly unremarkable. There is nothing interesting about it at all. It's just vanilla Americana performed by regular people. Why is this an album I "must hear before I die?" There are thousands of albums that are essentially identical to this, and not one of them will leave a mark on anyone except the moms and friends of the bands themselves. How can anyone hear this and think "wow, this is unique and special and notable!"?

pretty unremarkable, can't see why it's on this list. third california-centric rock album we have gotten in a row. this isn't even factoring in the pain it was to find these songs using youtube since it wasn't on spotify.

Couldn’t get this one on my streaming platform so I listened to a different one they did. Never heard of this and after listening, I know why. Just drab.

Quite chill, but then a bit boring

Ahead of its time for sure but definitely not timeless. Won’t listen to this one again. Also Spotify link didn’t work so had to go through YouTube. There goes my under 4 hour goal of phone time

Interesting album

01) Firefly - 6,0 02) Somewhere - 5,5 03) Laughingstock - 60 04) Lonely - 6,0 05) Pale Skinny Girl - 6,0 06) Blue And Grey Shirt - 5,5 07) Bad Liquor - 5,0 08) Now You're Defeated - 5,0 09) Jenny - 5,0 10) Western Sky - 6,0 11) Highway 5 - 6,0 12) Last Harbor - 6,0 TOTAL: 5,67 (57/100) Current ranking: 156/177 An album that is so important by a band that no one has ever heard of. The album did not appear on any charts, nor did the singles from it. The album is so important that you can only hear it on YouTube. The album is still not totally unlistenable, so it generously gets a two stars from me.

Maybe I don’t get it, but this feels like country music for indie rock snobs. And very little of it is all that interesting. It not only doesn’t sell me on country music, but it also gets under my skin and reminds me why I hated indie rock snobs for most of my life. If there were more songs like "Bad Liquor," I'd hate it more, but most of it is just bland and forgettable.

This album goes downhill fast! After the song Lonely, the singers voice changes, and the songs get shittier. Gone are the country folk sensibilities, and they are replaced by terrible indie rock horseshit. Everyone claims Mark is a fantastic song writer, but I couldn't tell ya because I couldn't get past how awful his voice got. Favourite songs: Firefly, Somewhere, Lonely Least favourite songs: Pale and Skinny Girl, Jenny, Highway 5 2/5

Joel, this album really isn't very good, is it?

Hell no

This sounds like it represents an inflection in the transition from indie rock to Americana. It's interesting, but it's not great. I admit that I always wanted to be a rock singer, and I can also admit that I'm bad as a lead singer. Not "good-bad", just bad. This guy's friends really needed to have a sit-down with him and tell him some hard truths. If this were the "obscure albums you must listen to before you die" I would understand its inclusion, but there are better acts out there that represent this transition point. Not bad, not great. I like the music – the skill of the musicians. The incongruent vocals are distracting to a greater degree than I would expect.

Ah another melancholy and frankly boring 80s indie rock band. Nothing to distinguish them from their contemporaries.

Generic music from a generic band name on a generic album name. 4/10

I was initially quite hopeful for this album because it starts rather strong, but then tails off significantly for me. I will say that it deserves credit for incorporating several different song styles and a mixing of some genres as well. It's not the same thing over and over again which is a plus, but it is rather boring in the middle and towards the end. Favorite tracks: Firefly, Somewhere, Lonely, Bad Liquor.

I know people who absolutely love this band - people who's opinions I rate. But it just does nothing for me. I don't like the vocal style at all, for example. Not for me.

Average in every metric. Yawn.

Boring!

This wasn’t boring, but it was listenable in a more interesting way rather than in an enjoyable way? I think it just wasn’t for me is all.

Tyvärr var inte detta album möjligt att komma åt så albumet får 2/5 stjärnor som något form av mellan-punkt.

Was it the smiths? Was it a precursor to nirvana? Was it a Bruce Springsteen tribute band? This album seemed to hold all of that. There were moments of greatness and Bad Liquor is an absolute smash.

I tried to listen to this full ablyn but It was so slow I only got to track 3 kr 4 before switching it on my walk to work. Might be better in a more relaxing setting

Not bad. Nothing special.

When this came up, I remarked to myself that I was surprised I've never heard it. I mean, I was a senior in high school when this came out. But having heard it, now I see why. On paper, this is the sort of thing I might like well enough, but there's just not a lot of there, there. The vocals in particular are pretty amateurish, making an otherwise pleasant album kind of a chore to listen to. "Bad Liquor" is just kind of confounding, like a bad attempt at throwing in a Replacements-style rowdy rocker, but they don 't pull it off. There is some talent in this band, which makes me want to rate it more harshly. Like you're not technically bad, but you just couldn't be bothered to make a better album. Fave songs: Western Sky, Firefly, Highway 5

Nothing special

This was mostly a waste of time. Not terrible but I could have gone without listening. Everything about it was generic and boring.

Crushingly boring, why oh why?

Not BAD but very forgettable.

a bit too depressing for me

It had an interesting composition but mostly didn't stick

A little too country for how I like my indie. I'm more a fan of the stuff that came out the next decade. It's pleasant enough but feels like 100 other indie rock albums I've heard.

I'm imagining a pub band who nobody really likes. Maybe they realise the people in the bar they play in want to talk and aren't hear to listen to their rather drab music. They got together as something to do after work, but none of them are particularly talented. One of them has a friend who can get them time in a studio, so they record an album. They don't want to record covers, so they record their own material, but they all know it's no good; there's something missing. They release it anyway, knowing that they still have their day jobs to rely on. Extremely boring and "bad liquor" was really just plain bad. This is the definition of "instantly forgettable". I couldn't even remember the name of the band when I got to the end of the album.

Never heard of them. Apparently they were pioneers for slowcore, a genre I also had never heard of. Now I know why.

Not sure about this, it completely passed me by the first run, and then I put it on again, but now I can't remember a thing. That can't be a good sign. I think it was pretty decent, but also left no impression whatsoever except maybe being a bit pretentious sometimes. Think this will have to a 2 star.

Feels like generic coffee house music. I would guess it was recorded a lot later than it was so that is something I guess. I found the mixing was uneven maybe due to having to rely on youtube for the songs. Anyway it was ok but nothing special. Something that I would've loved in my early twenties maybe. Now it just passed me by, there are a plethora of bands with similar sounds which I think are better.

Chill 80s alt rock with jangly, spacious reverb-heavy guitars and Springsteen-style Americana vocals. Feels a bit like budget Replacements. They're all fine songs, low key enough to be enjoyed in the background for good vibes. But it's nothing special, and I sorta wish I was listening to this live in a barren saloon sitting alone and sipping on rye. Got more forgettable in the second half, and with tracks like "Bad Liquor" which cuts the flow but at least is a cool idea. Favorites: Firefly, Laughingstock, Highway 5

never heard of the band, but had a good vibe. the older albums were better than the newer.

Clearly, the curators here got desperate as they were trying to make it to 1001.

It was ok country music, some good songs

Certainly not bad but pretty unexciting. It all just kind of chugs at one of two speeds (mid-tempo or slow) without much melody or variety. The random injections of "YEAH! GUITAR TIME" are more strange than anything. Didn't do much for me. Best song: Firefly?

Indie rock, americana. Rollo. Un 2.

Fine in a relaxing way but not particularly memorable

Bit dreary and samey

Pas un album foncièrement mauvais, mais ce n'est pas tellement intéressant non plus et c'est vraiment à se demander pourquoi eest-il inclu dans les 1001. C'est un peu un snoozefest pour être honnête. 4/10

Finally, something from the pioneers of Slowcore! A reviewer said they became more commercial after this, but I think they were well on their at this point. I was snoozing along to the country-indie-pop vibe, then WTF!!! "Bad Liquor". That one sounded like a cross between The Cramps and early Kings of Leon. They should have saved it for another album.

I'm a sucker for Indie music so I tried, Lord knows that I really made an effort to listen carefully to this, but alas You-tube isn't the best streamer for music so it was plagued with ads and interruptions so it didn't go well. The other issue that I have to mention is that American Music Club must be the least imaginative band name I've ever heard, but perhaps that's fitting because the music was enormously uninspiring also.

Such a bland and unengaging LP for one of America's most storied and vivid states. The songwriting and instrumentation never rose above what felt like a hollow murmur, and the vocals left a lot to be desired.

Wasn't sure what to make of this, never heard of this band before. But going in to the first few songs it became obvious they were one of those indie rock / country-esque bands. The vocalist was not very distinctive, very easy to tune out which is not good. The lyrics weren't remarkable to me either. I just didn't feel like it moved me much. But it's funny because the next thing that queued up was Neil Young. I could tell he was someone they were trying to channel. Just not well. Next.

Not bad but very unremarkable.

They sound like a Counting Crows cover band but they don’t play the hits, because “The hits are too mainstream man”. Get off your high horse and play Mr. Jones already. That being said “Bad Liquor” and “Pale Skinny Girl” have their moments.

Well, this was rather disappointing: rather flat, only a few reasonable songs.

Aburridón, pero lo toleré.

Sure it's safe, but at least it's boring

They're like a more annoying version of REM. Did not enjoy.

I don't want to join this club.

Not a huge fan of REM and this is worse.

Struggled to find the album but what I heard was underwhelming.

Fairly middle of the road Americana. Didn't finish the album

No me aportaron nada...

The album (maybe its the band?) is a little all over the place. Bad liquor is punky but transitions to Now You're Defeated which is in the ballpark of bad country. Occasionally he sings in a very 80s moan-y way but generally I can't place this as 80s which is maybe the nicest thing I can say about this album. I found Lonely to be particularly annoying. But I guess that makes sense, no one likes being lonely.

Surprisingly offensive for something so inoffensive sounding. Couldn’t wait to skip tracks, except Jenny and Bad Liquor.

This was just really boring.

This indie folk album was rather bland. I wasn't able to detect anything terribly groundbreaking about it and also wasn't able to find anything terribly offensive either. It just washed over me and left me with no strong feelings either way. The whole thing just feels a bit safe.

A middling album that the blog author describes as "the sound of early onset impotence". Um. Okay. How does an album like this get a spot yet Gordon Lightfoot does not.

Sad-core, indeed. :(((

I very strongly did not like this album. Weak wishy washy overall a massive MEH. It left no last impression other than disappointment

I guess it was fiiiiine but nothing more, just american man guitar music.

Saved from obscurity by this list it seems. No, Do Not adjust your set. The whining... this is not Danny Elfmans "Mars Attacks!" defence sequence, (where country music like "Indian Love Call", performed by Slim Whitman makes the Martians heads expode.) A hard album to stream. Its not on YT Music or Spotify, except as bootleg playlist. Coincept album stuff. mixing Pink Floyd late 80's atmospherics, with early Springsteen fireside intimacy, and some Counting Crows pleading and crooning. Feels like its posing too much while hoping its delighting... there's potential here, but its not greatness due to the wierd production and pacing. Maybe one for listing alone in the garage while rebulding a classic car with your favourite doobie? Its just overdone for me....

I had never heard this band before. Maybe I should have given it more than one listen here. It’s like there’s a stack of potential here but it’s unrealised. Maybe they were a really good band but I’m not quite hearing it. I really liked Lonely & Western Sky but I thought a lot of it was ragged. Sometimes amateurish. Sometimes boring.

This is like a pale carbon copy of the alternative music of the 80s; a bit alt-country, a bit Smiths, a bit RM, but not a patch on any of it. I found this bland and unmemorable. A SputnikMusic review states: "AMC slowly faded into relative obscurity and are now looked back at as a cult act, well-regarded also-rans. Clearly there was a limit to how much navel-gazing the public at large could take but it should still be remembered that AMC played their part in winning the war against ‘80s douche-bag decadence." Let's give a minute's silence for this fallen soldier in the battle against mainstream rock. They didn't achieve anything heroic, but they were there.

Mostly dull

All new to me -- band, album, their music -- so as always I'm grateful for this project and the way it's constantly serving up music I'd almost certainly never encounter otherwise. This album is fine, nothing in it that I dislike, but through no fault of its own it's hampered a bit by the abundance of music that sounds a lot like it. That being said, the compositions and performances are quite good, and I like the style and sound of this album.

A boring album that I had to sit through on YouTube. Very slow and everything sounded the same. Nothing else to really say.

Boring, nothing special or memorable.

One of the most forgettable albums I've listened to on this entire list. But I didn't actively hate it, so a 2 it is

Not worth the effort to listen on YouTube. Blah.

This singer must be really nice. He sounds really nice. I expect he doesn't forget birthdays and he's the kind of guy who pops around when you've been ill or if you're low. I don't know why else he would be on this list as the album doesn't stand out at all.

Fairly middle of the road white guy dad rock. So yeah, it was okay, I suppose, maybe.

Not bad, but far from necessary. This was pretty sleepy all the way through and never particularly exciting. I feel that this is a high 2 for me.

Some folky/country music to start us off which I can totally get behind. Is the last 2 minutes of Laughingstock just silence? Lonely wasn't great songwriting. I feel like I am constantly changing the volume on the songs so I can hear. I am listening on YouTube though so maybe that has something to do with it. Blue and grey shirt was pleasant, but very much a white bread song. Bad Liquor is sporadic and loud all of the sudden? Doesn't really fit in. Overall not terrible music, but it really just seemed so lackluster and felt like they just wanted to appeal to 80% of white Americans. I don't think I would enjoy having a beer with these guys. I want to give this a 1 star so badly, but it is objectively better than the 1-stars I have given out. Soft 1.5

This is an interesting album I don't quite know what to think of it. It's like indie/country/folk mix. Not really a big fan of the singer. Bad Liquor does not fit on this album at all I thought it was put in the Youtube playlist on accident. This album didn't do anything for me I was happy when it ended.

Not really into slowcore

Not on Spotify, but found it on YouTube. Thought it was going to be a folk album then it changed into more of a post rock shoegazy dreary rock album. Shite tbh

Arnar Eggert sagði í Mogganum að þetta væri "[the bands'] "definitive statement". Og svo var vitnað í hann í þessari bók sem við fylgjum. Gott og vel, en ég þarf ekki að hlusta aftur. Lítið spennandi rödd, og ekkert lag sem grípur við fyrstu hlustun.

Mediocre

A bland review for a bland album

I'm on a streak of average albums on this list. This is another one, rather anonymous country rock band, that brings essentially nothing to the table. Its hard to point in any direction with praise, it's mostly just generic music probably created by Chat GPT, after feeding in the name of the band. Waste of time.

Don’t know who they’re pulling one over by not having their music available. Listening to this was not that great. It’s like having that weird uncle be in a band from the 80s. The folky songs were rather sad and depressing. It wasn’t upbeat enough to be classic rock. It was in limbo of both and wasn’t that great. 4.8/10

It was difficult enough to find a full album to listen to for this album, and believe me, I tried. Found a physical copy after a long search, and let me tell you. It was not worth it. Don't waste your time.

Moody and melancholic at times. It wasn't 'bad' but I didn't love it either. 2.5

So very dull and terrible lyrics... Only gets an extra star as it's nice enough as background music

Completely unnoteworthy

Album available on YouTube

Mostly boring

Variety in albums can be good, but the variety in this album doesn't sit right with me. The genres they try to tackle, they aren't very exceptional in.

Not underrated

~ INCOMPLETE ~ streaming not avail at time, will circle back later

No link to music - couldn't review

Im giving it a star to say how much I don’t like it

From the moment I heard the pedal steel I knew I was in for a rough ride. Absolutely terrible. It's Indie meets Americana, and somehow is performed and produced in the most lifeless way imaginable.

Wanted to to listen..but not on Deezer :/

This started out sounding like Bruce Springsteen with all the soul and interesting bits removed but it quickly evolved into heart on your sleeve horseshit. This what a pretentious singer/songwriter imagines a 14 year old girl imagines her overly sensitive crush writes in his diary? 🤮 The only thing counting in its favor was that it was mercifully short.

Not on Spotify

Couldn’t find it on Spotify.. but listened to their other album

I could only listen to this on YouTube on my phone and it would stop anytime I used a different app. My friends - it is not good enough to deal with that bullshit. These dudes sound like a sober Hold Steady and it’s a snooze fest.

Couldn’t find on Spotify

I want to punch this band in the face.

How tf is this on the list. Had the thought “it must be over now” and it was 20 minutes in. RYM: N Saved a song: N

"my mate who works in IT plays in a really cool band at the social club every Wednesday"

This is music. Not sure why it is on the list. Maybe I am not meant for this music club.

gibt's nicht

Truly terrible at being truly mediocre

American slop. Y encima ni siquiera fácil de encontrar.

DNF - I strongly believe this isn’t one of the 1001 albums I needed to listen to before I die next June thanks anyway

What if The Smiths were really fucking boring and generic and I could only listen to them on YouTube for some reason

?/10 I couldn’t grade it because it wasn’t available on Spotify 🥀

springsteen garbage

i didnt feel like i should vote on this...

its unavailable

Not on apple music so I had a look on you tube and wish I hadn't bothered.

Yeah. Not for me at all. Couldn't make it through this one. 1 star

i cant hear it on spotify idk whyy

I couldn't listen to this album 💔😞

Lame. Who is putting these shitty albums on this list? This band has 1750 monthly listeners on Spotify and this album isn’t even available. Seriously, go fuck yourself. This makes me irrationally angry. The Black Album is laughing at you.

This isn’t it. Depressing, unpleasant musically - I’m not sure why this album is on such an esteemed list.

Not going out of my way to track this down

This felt like a lot of nothing, didn't have much substance. It wasn't trout mask jarring but still wasn't enjoyable

are you kidding me? this was so fucking boring!

Wow this is just straight up not good, dawg. Was waiting for the album to really start, then saw I was halfway through already. And then it got bad.

both college rockish and indie rockish in a detestable way. did not enjoy my time here.

Cantfind

This is definitely divorced dad trying to reclaim his glory.

Didn’t listen

Nao tem no spotify, sorry mate

Boring.

20th album with group. Very basic and forgettable. I’ve probably heard 40 other albums on this list just like it. Good Songs - Firefly and Bad Liquor. Bad Songs - Somewhere, Laughingstock, Lonely, Pale and Skinny Girl, Blue and Grey Shirt, Now You're Defeated, Jenny, Western Sky, Highway 5, and Last Harbor.

1.4/5 Honestly, I wouldn't put this in the top 10,000 albums of all time, let alone the top 1,000. I'm not sure what people hear in this. If someone put this on and didn't mention it was on this list I would have said it was a college band's first and only album from the early 90's and it had less than 1,000 listens on Spotify. The only half decent song is the first track "Firefly". I could barely make it through the rest of the songs.

No están disponibles las canciones en Spotify

Not available on Spotify so I don't know

I couldn’t find the album anywhere:(

Top track: Firefly

this is terrible.

Favorite tracks: Pale Skinny Girl (but I would just listen to Slint instead)

The music was good but I hate his voice. Like a mix of Springsteen and Jeff Richmond in the worst way
