Reviews (page 4 of 6)
Country merged with indie. Innovative sound for the time, almost prescient. The angstier, slowcore tracks are their best.
It's pretty good, Americana-infused alt rock. Both atmospheric and melodic and well executed, but it doesn't really go anywhere or do anything memorable.
Nice enough for a 3, not interesting enough for a four
Note: Had to go to YouTube for this one -- not available on Spotify or Amazon. Not quite sure what differentiates this from a lot of other Americana-ish rock bands. Now they're certainly a *solid* band, and they've got some pretty good tunes, but there's a band like this in almost every major city that swears they could have been the next Gin Blossoms. Middle-aged sounding white guys with a musical ear, some decent songwriting, and a couple of good hooks. But ultimately background music. This is one of the few where I can't say, "I see why you included this, for better or worse." Unexpected bangers: Pale and Skinny Girl, Western Sky
5.5/10
Has americana vibes and it's not my first choice but still was enjoyable. Quite good.
Pretty clean, straightforward soft / gentle rock. They really let loose on the song Bad Liquor, which is easily my favorite. It was overall pleasant but Bad Liquor is probably the only song I'll listen to again.
sad (and sometimes corny) rock I would expect to hear on the radio, but still very much listenable
Not bad/Not amazing Standout songs: Firefly Blue and Grey shirt Bad Liquor
It's just a bit dull (though highly proficient) It didn't turn my head.
solid listening, liked the first half better. A little slow and repetitive, keeping it as a 3 for me. 3.5
Very okay. Maybe even "pleasant" or "reasonable". I've no idea why it's on this list though. It sounds like your mate's band, or perhaps a band that had one hit and an album of filler to go with it, or maybe the band of a character from a late 80s / early 90s film where young GenXers hang out and have relationship drama and floppy hair. You know? Musically I like it. I think the singer sounds very average. It's fine. But nothing that really stands out. A bit boring. 2.5 stars
It is easy for me to see that this album would be influence for later alternative rock bands, even today. It has a melodic moody sound that I enjoyed, but an entire album length was too much to keep my interest.
It was pretty good I suppose. I listened to it yesterday and nothing really stood out to me besides all the jesus stuff, but the music was not bad, didn't hate it.
some pretty nice alt country, alt rock, whatever you want to call it. the singer reminds me a lot of the ex singer of Black Country New Road, so it helped pull me in. i really liked this project, but sadly i don't see myself listening to a lot if it due to the lack of spotify presence.
Pretty good
Tinny recording quality on the first track (maybe others, or I got used to it). Wonder if this was by design in this era. Not as tinny as AM radio…but sounds like something between AM and FM radio. His renditon of Respect had a nice groove. Didn’t realize Aretha recorded it after Otis. Need to see if Aritha’s had the 4-on-the-floor groove as prevalent as in this recording. A Change Is Gonna Come was beautifully soulful and passionate. Down In The Valley was a great track. My Girl recording of the Temptations classic. Rock Me Baby - straight up blues Respect Per wikipedia: Shortly before his death in a plane crash, Redding wrote and recorded his iconic "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" with Steve Cropper. The song became the first posthumous number-one record on both the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B charts.
Suena sorprendentemente morderno. Tuve que recurrir a YouTube porque no está en Apple Music.
Started off thinking I was going to hate this but it grew on me as we went through it, always hard to rate the albums only on YouTube as I don’t get the full experience and not one I’ll comeback to as it’s not on Spotify. But gets the benefit of the doubt and 3 stars
Meh. It's fine.
Loving Eitzel's song 'Johnny Mathis's Feet' I had thought I might enjoy more but his work as American Music Club has never quite got off the ground for me and whilst I am sure he has a loyal and dedicated fan base, there's just not quite enough there to excite the casual listener.
Pretty chill and well rounded music
*Listening note* Available on Youtube if not available on Spotify. This album sounds like much of what was to come in the 90s.
I have never heard of this artist before. Although I wasn't a fan of his voice, the songs were mostly chill, which I appreciate. This was a pleasant listen. 3/5
3.75
A pleasant, inoffensive album
Couldnt find the full album, What I heard sounded folk indie which was an interesting mix 2.5
The uptempo songs sound like a great local bar band. The downtempo songs sound like a more boring Smiths.
- Not on Spotify which is a major L because the vibes on this are pretty good ngl - A lot of chill songs with emotion but Bad Liquor goes hard
perfectly mid
Never heard of this band but liked what I could hear on Spotify!
la fin a sauvé l'album
Eh. Whatever. Super generic late 80s/early 90s soft rock. Nothing memorable or remarkable to it, really.
I feel like I’m supposed to love this. But I don’t. It’s not awful but I can’t see myself listening to this again..
Couldn’t listen, it’s not available on my spotify :(
Intriguing but not sure for me
No time to read up on this one however I did listen. Some good songs. I’m a huge fan of singer songwriters and this gave that vibe.
Ok
Hard to find, not on Spotify. Nice easy listening. To me it’s good but not amazing, middle of the road. Would listen but probably wouldn’t seek it out.
I must say, I don’t think you’re able to get more average. 3/5
This music felt very much like the comfortable indie music played in the mid-mornings on my public radio station. It was nice to listen to, but nothing really stood out (except for "Bad Liquor," in a bad way). It probably deserves another listen, but I wasn't very anxious to do so.
This album was fairly easy to listen to, but didn’t really touch my soul in any way. I think that if this was from a band that a friend was in, then I would be more keen because I would have a connection to it. But, alas, this was not the case.
I did not find this at all remarkable.
Já já, þetta er ágætis plata.
Never heard of this group before. It was just ok for me. I imagine for some this album is pure nostalgia and others are wondering why it's on this list.
I get a sense that if I listened to this 5/6 times I would end up liking it.
Our first from this band I've never heard of, and unfortunately it isn't on Apple Music or Spotify, not sure why. I listened on youtube, and I actually quite enjoyed this album. A nice, laid back alt-rock type of album. Nice melodies, good lyrics. Nothing too spectacular, and it's never a great sign when the only note on Wikipedia is that the album is included on this list. But dang, this one's pretty good. Favorite tracks: Firefly, Jenny. Album art: Black and white shot of maybe a highway support. It looks like it's decaying, or maybe it's just some paint or other markings. As far as photos go, this one's solid. The framing is pretty nice too. Fairly forgettable, but it's easy on the eyes. 3.5/5
HL: “Last Harbor”, “Firefly”, “Somewhere”, “Blue and Grey Shirt” The alt-country selections in this list (almost) all come straight out of left field, but I’ve enjoyed (almost) all of them. California imo veers between “fine” and “very good”, with not too many outliers (the rowdy “Bad Liquor” is probably the biggest surprise) If this was the Canadian Music Club you wouldn’t stop hearing this on 80s/90s radio stations December 30th, 2023
Oikeastaan pidin tästä! Ei-kaliforniainen mutta hyvin amerikkalainen viba, luonnollisesti. Tavanomaista mutta omaäänistä countrylle kumartavaa indietä. Loppua kohti meinasin kyllästyä, mutta vika biisi on kaunis
Musically, wonderful. Vocally? Unbearable.
Raw vocals. Some rootsier, southern rock bleeds through here occasionally, a la Allman Brothers, but overall ends up reminding me of proto-Counting Crows (not a knock, I like CC). I could imagine, with multiple listens, getting more into this record, but the first impression leaves me with just a "fine". Favorite tracks: "Pale and Skinny Girl", "Highway 5"
This is why you gotta use the links to read up on albums and bands. I did not know there was a genre called slowcore, which these guys helped pioneer, that developed about the same time as grunge but as a counter to it. I think the only bands I recognized under that banner are Low and Mazzy Star, both one hit wonders to my knowledge. And I can honestly say I prefer grunge and not her sister slowcore. This album is okay, and I do enjoy sad songs. But something about the minimal musical stylings or the slightly alt-country sound just doesn't take hold of me. I could definitely let it play, probably on repeat. But I'm not sure I'll pay attention to anything in particular. Kudos to AMC for blazing a different trail though.
American Music Club - California (1988) WHAT I ENJOYED: dreamy pedal steel on the opening track, general dark, hazy, dreamy feel on the whole album GRIPES: Not on Spotify, the vocals feel a bit monotonous. Bad Liquor sounds like something that would be blasting out of an angsty neighbor's garage during a Dads' Night Off jam session. RECCOMMENDED IF YOU LIKE: Third Eye Blind (but less edgy,) the National, shoegaze, the Cure (but less jangly) #374 revealed / #499 rated
Poistettu spotifystä...
pleasant enough and chill but not really anything remarkable here for me. just okay. nice acoustic country/americana-inspired background music, but nothing more.
Pretty great background music. I appreciated it, even if I didn't really "like" it that much.
Didn't hate this but it didn't much for me either. A very neutral 3.
this album was pleasant but didn't seem particularly notable or groundbreaking, unless I'm missing something... the music sounded like a more subdued R.E.M., and the vocalist was kind of like a cross between Michael Stipe and Bruce Springsteen. certain songs like bad liquor were just annoying and since the album's not on streaming services, some of the tracks were terrible quality rips from youtube. now you're defeated was particularly bad, with noticeable artifacting on the cymbal hits. favorites: somewhere, pale and skinny girl, jenny
Indie Rock with a touch of country. 1988 The songs that stood out to me: Jenny, Laughingstock, Pale Skinny Girl, Blue and Grey Shirt, Now You're Defeated, Highway 5, Last Harbor It's nice...mellow mostly. My first impression of it is favorable, but it would take time to get to know it better to really judge it properly. For now, it is a 3/5
Just ok stuff honestly.
Only know the albums Everclear and Mercury from AMS. This one is presumably the best AMS album, but I hear little difference with the other two. It is well made, contains a couple of truly great songs, but also quite a few I do not care too much about.
It’s low key and gentle, mostly. Not much accent in his singing, which is pleasant to hear against the usual Americana twang or gruff rock vocal. A few pretty songs (notably Western Sky).
This was actually not what I was initially expecting. They kinda sound like a proto-emo/slowcore type band, but bring a pretty chill 80s indie vibe. It was kinda hard to find this album tho, not on Spotify and I eventually found it through a youtube playlist with varying audio quality from song-to-song.
Never heard of them or this album before, but the music is really interesting. I'd listen to it again.
Certainly nothing special, but inoffensive. Makes me think of what music AI would generate if they wanted background music for a Friends-like show where folks were 20 years older and their favorite style was "adult contemporary". Boring. Don't love the lead singer's voice.
Kind of boring to me. But we’ll made. A mood you have to be looking for.
Vond dit zeer verrassend en aangenaam. Kudos.
Hier had ik nog nooit van gehoord maar beviel me heel aardig. Flinke Lemonheads vibe, zelfs qua stemgeluid. Ga nog eens wat meer van deze band luisteren.
Ik kende dit nog niet en vond het erg aardig.
I listened once and decided I wouldn’t listen again, however, I relented and did give it another go and is was better than I thought, 3*
Once again, took a long time to finish the album via youtube and it not be all together stellar. its ok for me.
Just some dudes in a band singing some songs.
3/5 I liked the range of the different styles.
Pleasant Americana - but not much more than that for me.
It’s OK
Да неплохо. Не потрясает воображение, некоторые песни даже чуть раздражают, но в остальном слушать было приятно. Спокойно.
I'm a little uncertain whether or not I heard the whole album on YouTube, but what I heard was melodic and pretty characteristic of a classic Indie album. Small production, not a lot of frills. Lyric heavy and harmonious.
Music for stepdads trying to appeal to newly acquired teenage kids in the '80s. The singer sounds like Evan Dando and Bruce Springsteen with a little of that guy from Morphine, the band with the saxophone thrown in. This is the stuff that your stepdad throws on after setting up his new hi-fi stereo equipment in the living room late on a Sunday afternoon while the rest of the family ignores him. When Bad Liquor comes on, he turns up the volume just so people know he's there and he's cool. In reality, his mind is wandering and wondering why he decided to marry into this existing family and how it's much more difficult than he thought.. but at least he's got a new stereo system. Tomorrow, he'll go to Peaches store and pickup the new Go-Betweens album and a copy of Juggs.
It's pretty good. There's nothing I can point out not to like about it, but for some reason it didn't connect with me that much. Something about his voice - it just kind of drifts past me without making much of an impact. I could see growing to like this, maybe just need to listen some more, but for now it's 3 stars.
Perfectly serviceable countrified alt-rock with occasional glimmers of psychedelia, yacht, what have you. Not sure it stands out particularly.
# American Music Club - California While not my favorite style, the fact that this came out in 1988 is incredible. I can see this band's influence and paving the way for bands like Nirvana, Wilco, Radiohead and Gin Blossoms. The the country-rock with some blues thrown in for good measure are strong. The vocals are too pitchy and the production are distractions to me, so I rate this lower than I would if it were more polished. Overall Score: 3* Favorite Tracks: - Lonely - Bad Liquor ## 1. "Firefly" 2:49 2*. Vocals are not my favorite, a bit off-key and lacsadaisical. Too much slide guitar. ## 2. "Somewhere" 3:01 2*. Good guitars, but the levels are a little quiet. Vocals are pitchy. ## 3. "Laughingstock" 4:17 2*. Sounds like indie rock, but the vocals are too pitchy for my liking. ## 4. "Lonely" 2:42 3*. Like the driving bassline here. Favorite song on the album so far. ## 5. "Pale Skinny Girl" 3:33 2*. Haunting guitars but vocals and levels are distracting. ## 6. "Blue and Grey Shirt" 3:33 2*. Decent, but just not my style. Too slide-guitary and sappy for my taste. ## 7. "Bad Liquor" 1:57 3*. Bouncy, blues-style jam. ## 8. "Now You're Defeated" 2:28 2*. Pretty rough recording, vocals are pitchy. Bassline and chord progression are okay, but the song isn't moving me. ## 9. "Jenny" 2:38 2*. Interesting. ## 10. "Western Sky" 3:28 2*. ## 11. "Highway 5" 3:49 3*. Sounds like Radiohead. ## 12. "Last Harbor" 4:35 2*. Sounds like Nirvana, Kansas, Radiohead
Ok, wasn't on Canadian Spotify so had to youtibe
There are 1000 bands that sound just like this
I’m to understand this is a master stroke in indie rock but for me it’s simply another piece of the genre. There are some good songs here but nothing truly blew me away. It’s good indie rock just not revolutionary.
Not available on Spotify, so rated on expectation only.
This is not bad and representative of a particular movement. Dimery must have had an off day. It’s not the best Americana but far from the worst. It’s just sort of there. I’d rather listen to Steve Earle or Lyle Lovatt or even Fleet foxes. But in a pinch this is ok. 2.5 rounded up.
C'est assez Atmosphérique. J'ai des vibes the rock alternatif. 3.5
A lovely indie record. Sounds like lots of other things. A little bit country, a little bit folky, a little bit The Smiths, a little bit The National. Really nice. Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: Western Sky Date listened: 21/10/23
pretty! minus one star for being hard to get on spotify so... 3?
Ok but unremarkable alt country rock. Tried many times to get into it but it just slips away like sand in the desert…
Ni una sola de las canciones disponible en Spotify
Meh.
5/10. If this list doesn't have enough Neil Young for you, don't worry, this is basically the same thing with a different singer.
I guess the lyrics on this are supposed to be good? How come the only person with anything to say about this album is an Icelandic dude? 5/10
Tears for fears gone country? For track one at least. Very interesting, not sure how i feel.
Some guy told me to not bother listening to it.
не всё поняла (особенно слушая с ютуба), но вроде норм
Laid back indierock.
Robert nous offre un festival de chialeurs en ce moment, il va très certainement mal mais tant pis pour lui.
Je ne pouvais pas rêver pire pour mon retour de vacances
Pretty good stuff maynard. 3 stars.
I'd never heard of this band before. Amateur-esque roots rock only available on YouTube via user-submitted playlists. I don't mind a bit of roots/Americana style but this album was just kind of meh. I did like "Bad Liquor" which was a clear departure from the rest of the album.
Massa mas nada pra ligar pra mae contar. Tive que ouvir no YT porque provavelmente eles tem birra com Spotify
I really liked the songwriting, but only a couple of the songs really grabbed me. Best track: Firefly
It was okay. With the first few songs I thought it would be another same country album. But it wasn't. It's chill.
Rock indie
A nice enough listen on a Sunday morning after Psychfest but I wasn't that upset it's not on Spotify because I probably won't listen again. Nothing stood out particularly, maybe the grey and blue shirt.
kinda neat
Another 1001 I'd never heard of and probably wouldn't have otherwise.
Never heard of these guys. A pretty okay slice of 80s indie, some nice vocals, pretty sounds. If you'd told me they were a MOR Aussie act from the time, I'd have believed you (excepting the band and album names)
It's not on Spotify so i''m not gonna listen to it. It's probably a 3 tho
This album was hard to find. I was able to stream it on Bandcamp. So, not off to a great start, but hey, streaming this album is technically free, which is nice. To be honest, this album wasn't all that bad. I'm not a huge country music fan, and this is not country at all, but the steel pedal guitar added an extra layer of complexity. Was neat to hear that instrument in a non-country atmosphere. Other than that, the album wasn't all that original and at points I was a little bored, but there are WAY worse albums in this book than this. Lyrics are actually very very good, but the average music, combined with a good, but forgettable voice, leads to an album that is lost to obscurity. Probably forgotten to time if not included in this list. Fun fact, the lead singer was at some point in a band called "Toiling Midgets", so at least he has that going for him. 2.5, but rounding up to 3 because of quality, poetic lyrics.
Modt of the album was extremely nothing, even starting to get annoying and bad near the 75% mark, but the last four songs were all really nice and bleak yet beautiful. Nothing crazy good, but earns a three for its troubles.
A pretty diverse indie offering that was nice to listen to while it was on but was ultimately quite forgettable
The most average album I’ve heard here. The only song I actually disliked was Bad Liquor. The first and last song I’d say are the best. Xtra half star for not being terrible.
average length. average album 2.5
Full thing wasn't on Spotify, managed to find 4-5 songs on YouTube. Sounded pretty good, nice cruisy vibe. Vaguely Mark Lanegan sounding. 3/5 bc I couldn't hear the whole thing.
Tbf I started thinking this was a bit forgettable and one of those where you wonder how the heck this sneeked in. But then it started growing on me. Jenny is quite a beautiful song tbf, Bad Liqour something different. Western Sky is also good. But I don't think I'll ever listen to it again.
It's okay. It has it's moments. But in general I would say it is nothing special.
A chill and unremarkable listen…with the exception of Bad Liquor, because what the hell was that and who thought that would fit here?? Likes: Somewhere; Western Sky
Very much meh to bad. Didn't really enjoy it at all, and actively hated the first track.
Not worth the effort.
Meh.
Did not like it.
Not available on Spotify.
Haven't heard of them. The album was... fine? It wasn't bad so I can't complain about it but also it's definitely not something everybody needs to know. Yet another baffling choice on the list 2/5
Melodic but .
It started off great and got a little weird as it went a long. Add to the fact that they aren't on Spotify and you get a 2
This was not worth tracking down the album since it's not on regular streaming services.
A bit boring, nothing spectacular
If REM had none of what made them interesting. Some of it is fine but a boring affair generally.
Ziemlich langweilig
Was this album worthy the hassle of searching through all my available streaming apps to listen to? Well hardly. These chaps need to decide who they are musically (maybe they have by now but I’m not prepared to find out) Seem to be trying to be all things to all (nearly put men here but that wouldn’t be right would it?) people. Dipping their toes into multi genres but mastering none. 2/5 31/5/26
Geeuw
..
on ok album, indie rock type. Not sure what the hype is on this one. I would not listen to it again, nor purchase it
Listening to the album on YouTube really took away from the experience for some reason. I know I’m just being nitpick-y, but not being able to see song titles just made it all blend together. There were a couple spots I was jamming to, but largely forgettable
This one's a 'No' from me, dawg.
⭐️⭐️1/2 I was vibing with the chill sound and then Bad Liquor came out of nowhere and changed everything - that experience was not unlike my 20s. It was hard for me to rally (I’m talking about the album here, not my 20s) and take the rest of the album as seriously. I felt like the lyrics didn’t necessarily match the level of melancholy / somber the songs were portraying, they almost seemed too shallow. Maybe I need to give this another listen, but I wouldn’t say I’m itching to do so.
Unfathomably dull
The first track made me wonder if this was going to be a great undiscovered find. Sadly but not surprisingly, this feeling left me quickly. The guy can't sing, and also the lyrics were really, really awful at times. Maybe it's because I have been reading up about Lloyd Cole, but I have Bob Dylan on the brain (apparently Cole was somewhat obsessed with Dylan for a time). Some of the lyrics on this record felt like the writers were trying to add random details to their tales of woe, because that's something that good songwriters do. A well-placed highly specific detail can give a song broader appeal than generic sentiments. Effective songwriters use this tactic a lot, and Dylan in his heyday was a master of it. AMC is not. As I found the music uninteresting for the most part, i was forced to focus on the lyrics, and couplets like "She finally gets on the bus and sinks next to a very nice lady Who just got out of the hospital, she had a major operation," are just trying SO HARD to do the thing that only works if you make it look effortless. Also, the singer's voice reminds me a lot of Evan Dando's and eventually that started to disturb me. Dando seems like a lazy sack of crap from everything I've heard but at his best he's pretty good at adding details to his songs too. So that just made it worse. Why am I spending my Friday night listening to Temu Lemonheads??
That was pretty dull.
A decent album sullied by an awful vocalist. And not awful in a way that is actually good. Awful in a way that is uninteresting, which is the worst awful of all.
Unfortunately this album suffers from the not-being-on-streaming-platforms bias. From what I was able to listen to on YouTube this was fine but slightly uninspiring Americana. It’s ok but would I go through the effort of heading to YouTube and dealing with ads to listen to this album track by track? Nah
Not heard if this band. This album not on Spotify, 5k followers... I know people with more than that. The expectations is high then, being this obscure or niche and still in this list. Even if they were not high, this album would not meet them. Not a bad album, but unremarkable in every area. Even taking into account when it was made it is very mediocre. If I get to the end of this list to find this was included and Julian Cope was not I swear I will sue somebody. If I saw this band in a bar in the 90s (maybe I did) I wouldn't leave, but I wouldn't remember them either.
This is... The most forgettable album I've gotten so far on this list. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't bad. But the American Music Club is not only a generic band name, it's a generic as shit album they've put out too.
Starts off with country and then diverts into alt rock. And it was pretty ok for the time it spent there, but about the halfway mark the valium kicks in and it devolves to smiths-like sluggish morosity. It never recovers. Also this band takes the prize for lamest band name.
Totally new to me, and there's plenty for me to hate here, but there are actually some melodic ideas which caught my ear a couple of times. In an alternate universe, grunge went off on some weird country tangent - middle-of-the-road but strangely alternative at the same time. Not quite sure this deserves to be on the list, but I'm kind of glad I heard it at least once... Not sure I'll ever listen again, but it has a certain charm. Not awful.
This album must be pretty obscure, because I had to find it on YouTube to be able to listen to it. I'm not sure what to make of it. It's okay, not really my cup of tea to be honest.
It was okay. I just found a lot of it not particularly memorable and I got kinda bored by the end of it. I didn’t hate it though. I liked the opening track probably the most
I listened to it. I liked it well enough. And then when asked to describe it and what I liked I couldn't. It's kinda americana, kinda rock, but a lot of middling music. There isn't anything wrong with the sound, but it's lacking that something special that would drive to recommend it to a friend.
This sounds like it could be one of the bands that sometimes plays at the good barbecue place in town at lunch on Friday. It's good, it's local, but it isn't unique and you always kind of wish they would play a song that you knew instead of their own material. But there's nothing offensive about it and it is a good background as you eat your burnt ends and cornbread pudding. All that said, it's good music and I would definitely listen again, it seems like it would be great to listen to and unwind after a long day. Favorite track: "Last Harbor"
Boring generic country tinged basic american music
I don’t know. I think I’m favoring the mellower stuff with these guys. Anything sort of up tempo seems forced. Like a cheap version of U2 in a way and that’s not. A good comparison. U2 sucks balls. Well, I’m not even sure I like the mellow stuff all that much. It feels like every song is missing something to make that particular song relistenable . Ya ya I know that’s not a word. Big whoop. I think I’m going to start skipping songs before they are done. Sorry
sad american music to contemplate to
2.5 stars.
Meh
The most sterile 90s wannabe Tom Petty music possible.
I didn’t really like this, and would punch out pretty quickly if I randomly heard it somewhere.
This was a perfectly ok listen even though I had to go hunting for it on YouTube. That said…there are way better bands around the same time having similar feels that were/are doing it much better. Check out The Feelies for a much better listen.
Like a wannabe Pink Floyd at times. Then maybe a few hints at Grateful Dead. Then some sappy shit like…John tesh? I don’t even know if that’s right but his name came in mind. Or maybe some Christian vibes a few times. Replace a few lyrics with “Jesus” and this would definitely work. 2
Not available on my streaming service of choice and had to listen on YouTube. It was annoying so I only heard two songs. But think I got the gist and not my bag, baby. 2.25/5
Why is this here? The US bias is unreal.
Easy YouTube access for this 2/5 max album. A chore at only a little over 35 minutes, which is rather impressive to make me check a few times how much longer is left in that short of time.
A vida é injusta. E eu sou indiferente à este álbum. 2/5
The book makes this album sound like a masterpiece. Alas, it was not. Mostly very slow indie with not much standing out.
American Music Club sounds like a singer-songwriter who brings in a band for certain songs. Based on my brief research, this impression is accurate, but it stems mainly from the fact that the songs don’t really fit together and therefore don’t sound like they come from the same source. As a result, “California” sounds to me like a radio play—something I’m more familiar with from children’s programs. The album isn’t really bad, even if the songs are anything but outstanding. Above all, though, I don’t find the concept for a full-length album convincing. The Wikipedia entry states that Arnar Eggert Thoroddsen of the Icelandic daily newspaper Morgunblaðið describes the album as the band’s “definitive statement”. He may be right, but in this case, I don’t consider this band particularly relevant. This is also underscored by the fact that the album isn’t available on either Spotify or YouTube Music—it just seems like nobody is particularly interested in it.
An album full of the beige, milquetoast palette of the 90s Americana/Folk/Indie scene. I'll leave this one for the older generations.
I mean, it's okay.
Another baffling inclusion. This sounds like a band you might hear in a downtown bar or a battle of the bands. Not quite good enough to attract people to a show all of their own, but fine. I wouldn't leave the bar, but I might take a toilet break at the battle of the bands, confident that I wasn't going to miss the next big thing. "Reviewer Arnar Eggert Thoroddsen, from Iceland's daily newspaper Morgunblaðið, describes the album as the band's "definitive statement." " - For all I know, Thoroddsen is a very well-respected music critic, but if this is the highest-profile opinion of this band available, and it is two words, without judging the quality of the album... you know, it makes me wonder. It's not even damning with faint praise. It's damning with a neutral statement.
Somehow both brilliant and "meh" at the same time. See also: good, but not for me.
Best Song: Bad Liquor. Doesn't even sound like the same band. At least they sound like they have a pulse here. Worst Song: Pale and Skinny Girl. Ahh, a man singing slowly about a woman in infantilizing terms. My favourite. Overall: This is just so plain, I really can't fathom why it is included on this list. I checked the Wikipedia page to see what I must be missing, and the only thing of note was that it was included on this list. That's a sad level of circularity that feels like evidence for why it ought not be included. Also, one of this album's listed genres is "slowcore", which just by name alone is basically the antithesis of the kind of music I enjoy. On a lark I tried playing a song at 1.5x speed and it was just a pure improvement.
Like most clubs, this gets depressing towards closing time. What starts with some bluster, ends with whimpers. Top tracks: "Somewhere," "Bad Liquor"
--Firefly...I like slide guitar so this is working for me. Also I miss seeing fireflies --Somewhere...college radio single #386 --Laughingstock...nice but not much going on. sleepy. sounds more like a closer than a third track --Lonely...not a great song but the singer is letting loose in a way that's infectious --Pale Skinny Girl...see "Laughingstock" --Blue and Grey Shirt...at least there's still slide guitar --Bad Liquor...we get a pure rocker. decent bass groove but meh overall --Now You're Defeated...getting a Silver Jews vibe here --Jenny...another sleepy number but I like this more. it's probably the whisper-close, bedroom-style recording I find appealing. Kind of a Sufjan Stevens thing going on here --Western Sky...see "Laughingstock" --Highway 5...see "Laughingstock". Also, we Californians refer to it as "The 5" now. Maybe that's just a SoCal thing --Last Harbor...joke's on me, they did close with "Laughingstock"
For some reason, this is not available on Spotify. So, I listened to one of this band’s other records…for about 2 tracks until I realized that I wasn’t into it at all, and then went back to listening to Tomahawk. So, I can’t give this record a fair rating, but I’m pretty sure if I could listen to it, I’d give it a high 2 or low 3. 5/10
I guess the slowcore part is Jenny? The rest of the album mostly sounds like someone went to school with Michael Stipe and whoever the guy from Counting Crows is and they got the short end of the stick
Mark Eitzel feels like a Great Value Evan Dando - an actively bad singer (significantly worse than Dando), an unremarkable poet (for an alleged songwriting genius he breaks meter way too often), a stuck-in-neutral composer for the most part. He seems to think all his mid-tempo, out-of-tune bleating is signifying the ragged tortures of his soul, when really it's just signaling that these songs feel a lot like a first draft that could have used a lot more polish. The highlights (like "Jenny" and "Western Sky") only prove that he's capable of doing better if he really wants to. My high school English teacher would have handed this one back with a bunch of redlines and a sticky note on top that just said "REVISE PLZ."
this is what AI was trained on...
I mean, it was fine, but I'm not sure how it distinguished itself to the maker of the 1001 Albums list
Not heard of the group … it was fine but won’t be seeking out any more.
Perfectly average and slightly boring.
I just listened to this and can’t remember a thing.
Whiny and annoying. Some musically interesting moments here and there but mostly I was ready for it to be over.
Another new one for me... never heard of AMC, guess I wasn't depressed enough. This album has a place and time.. I can listen to his voice and the music its very easy to listen to.
Pretty middle of the road and unappealing to me.
Some of the most pedestrian pop I’ve ever heard. Boring, uninventive, and the lyrics seem wildly uninspired.
It's fine - frankly we've had worse albums on a Friday. 2 stars, wouldn't lose my mind if someone threw this one the stereo. But I'm not going out of my way for it.
IDK, in the first 15 seconds of the first song --- I don't think I am gonna like it. This is like alterna- Paul Anka with, misplaced, steel / slide guitar(?). Ok, fine the songs got a little better as the album goes, still not great though. I am not a huge fan of the lead singers voice -- he feels a little too breathy at times for me. This would be a great Sundays album though.....
Not good
This sounds like the kind of band that was popular on the township or county level but never made it big in the province, let alone the country. They are talented enough that when you see them at a county fair when you are 14 you are impressed. However the intensity with which the lead singer emotes is a bit incongruous, and the dedication that the dozen or so dancers exhibit seems a bit forced. Anyway, this album has been removed from my version of the book, and I see why.
Suggested alternate title: “Morrissey as an American.”
A day after listening and it’s difficult to even remember what it sounded like. Good for those who need something uninspiring to fall asleep to, although they’ll never hear the end of the album. I’m a bit jealous of those listeners.
Ok
Rating: 4/10 So damn boring.
The most interesting fact about this band is that they seem to be the pioneers of "Slowcore", a style of music characterized for being, if it wasn't obvious, very slow. This album is in fact very calm, honest and sad, with the inclusion of a handful of more lively cuts, such as the folk and country songs "Firefly", "Somewhere" and "Lonely" with the addition of the rock track "Bad Liquor". All the other songs are fundamentally super slow ballads, with the ones closer to the starts being more folk inspired and the latest ones being only acoustic and voice. The thing is, most of the times, the songs come across as monotonous and lacking of interesting ideas, specially the ones that should add more energy. I think I preferred way more the pure sincerity of the ballad tracks, with my favourite the beautiful "Last Harbor", even though they also suffer from be a bit boring. I'm struggling deciding what score to give, but I think I have to give it a negative one, as I am not impressed about this project, even though I appreciate the sad and honest sound of it.
So earnest and doing too much. Unfinished demo vibes. Not for me. 2/5
I’m was initially really intrigued by this album. The opening track gave me a lot of hope for what was to come. Sadly it may have set the bar too high cause nothing on the album came close to that opening track. It has this really cool instrumentation that here it sorta plays around with country music sounds while being more a pop rock album. The whole rest of the album made no impression on me and was completely forgettable, honestly this is as bad as an album can be without getting a 1, it was just barely redeemable.
A decent album, not really compelled to finish it. I’ll give it a two, not sure if it’s something I would go back to, but it’s not bad. Not sure why it’s on the list.
Definition of mids.
At different moments this reminded me of Bruce Springsteen, Gin Blossoms, and Counting Crows. Ugh. I mean, this sounds like a random band you might find at an open mic night in a medium-sized town in California. I didn't know that was the criteria for this list.
Boring
This is one of those bands I'd heard of, but never actually heard any of their songs. This is also an album I should have liked, based on what I read about them. I didn't dislike it, but there weren't any standout songs or even standout moments. It was a perfectly fine record. The only song I kinda liked was Western Sky, but even that was more of a "oh here's a pretty cool song." I feel that this is an album that doesn't belong on the list, and based on the reviews on the site I am not alone in his belief. It's a 2.5 for me. We'll see which direction it goes when I give my official rating.
This sounds like the band you hear at the local drinking spot on a Saturday night in which you think they sound pretty good because you’re enjoying drinks and chatting with friends, and keep mentioning “these guys are awesome, can’t believe they aren’t bigger”. Then you buy their album burned to a CD-R on the way out to support, and once you wake up the next day and put it on and give them 100% focus, only to come to the realization of how horribly wrong you were.
Beautiful playing on this album and interesting enough compositions. However the vocals are distracting and overall take away from the experience unfortunately.
Had this album been in my life when I was like 19 I would have loved it. But I was into depressing stuff like that back then. I do feel like there is something I'm missing given the critical acclaim, but I'd still take Wilco, Ryan Adams and their ilk over this. Sorry.
I'd like to shake the hand of the guy that thinks this is better than all Weezer albums.... and freaking BREAK IT!!
Not my style unfortunately and just generally didn’t enjoy the album
I've never heard of American Music Club nor this album before, but my initial assumption was that this was a jazz album, like Buena Vista Social Club (apologies to Timex Social Club). However, I see that this is an alternative rock album. While not all early alternative rock strikes a chord with me, even the albums I'm not wowed by have been really interesting. I listened to a ton of FM alt rock throughout the nineties, and my favorite part of listening to rock albums from the late eight eighties, is trying to guess who could have been influenced by a particular album. I have no idea what results that little game is going to yield with this album, but I'm curious to find out. This album wasn’t particularly good in my opinion, but it was interesting because it sounded like something from the mid-nineties, instead of something from the late eighties. Listening to this album, I picked up on hints of Dave Matthews Band, Counting Crows, and even Brand New. While hair metal was dominating the airwaves, American Music Club went the other way, crafting a gentler and more melodic sound to support their deep and sometimes soul-crushingly sad lyrics. While I thought the lyrical songwriting on this album was pretty strong, musically, California didn’t have much to offer me. The album started off with promise; I thought “Firefly” was a really nice song, and I really enjoyed the inclusion of the pedal steel guitar. But from there, the band never really fleshed out a full sound, opting to stay the course with some safe melodic choices, which resulted in this album not really having any identity to it. I appreciate how far ahead of their time these guys were, but I just wish they would have had a better vision when crafting their sound. This album wasn’t unlistenable, but it faded from my ears very quickly once it ended.
Not available
Groupe inconnu. =>2/5
No.
Country-tinged alt rock, eschewing electric guitar riffs for folky chords and jangles - at its best when it gets dark, but is too often unengaging. Favourite tracks: Pale Skinny Girl, Western Sky (Springsteen rip off, probably why it stands out as a decent song!)
Never heard of this band in my life. Didn't impress me.
I remember this lot making an appearance and the music press saying how good they were, someone played it to me years ago and I had the same opinion than as I do now. Nothing special.
Had to listen to it on YouTube. It's alright.
mid to crap
New to me Not for me. Not on Spotify - found on YouTube 0:00 - firefly 2:52 - somewhere 5:56 - laughingstock 10:15 - lonely 13:00 - pale skinny girl 16:34 - blue and grey shirt 20:07 - bad liquor 22:05 - now you're defeated 24:35 - jenny 27:17 - western sky 30:35 - highway 5 34:35 - last harbor
It was fine.
I feel bizarrely ambivalent about this. I mostly hate it but a couple of tracks draw me in and I find them rather beautiful.
Sounds really modern, ahead of its time... but in a bad way somehow?
Slow, acoustic, melancholy indie rock with influences from country and folk. I can see why people would like this because it's emotional and sparse. But it's a bit too slow for me and none of the songs really stuck with me.
The fact that this isn't on streaming is indicative of how forgettable this is.
American Music Club was a new discovery for me. My reaction to their album "California" was ultimately a bit flat. It wasn't offensive to the ear, but it didn't grab my attention either. It was a tad bland and was largely an unmemorable experience, earning two stars. Note - This album isn't on Spotify. It's on YouTube here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUmXZEPwsTE 1 "Firefly" (3/5) 2 "Somewhere" (3/5) 3 "Laughingstock" (2/5) 4 "Lonely" (2/5) 5 "Pale Skinny Girl" (2/5) 6 "Blue and Grey Shirt" (2/5) 7 "Bad Liquor" (3/5) 8 "Now You're Defeated" (2/5) 9 "Jenny" (2/5) 10 "Western Sky" (2/5) 11 "Highway 5" (2/5) 12 "Last Harbor" (2/5) Total - 27.00 Average - 2.25 194/1001 107/194 albums reviewed were new to me.
This isn’t the California I know.
This was okay. Definitely got boring. Vocals were a little too "dark" for me. The end was BAD. Liked Songs: "firefly" , "somewhere" , "laughingstock" , "blue and grey shirt" , "now you're defeated"
This is fine. I can hear creativity, which is nice. But the sound is reminiscent of British Indie pop, where the singer treats us to his self-loathing inner dialogue. Not my thing. A 2. (Though, in fairness, it could probably be a three if I listened again. But I don’t want to). A 2.
Forgettable
I was ok with the first few songs, they were reminding me a little of The Smiths, but then things got a little weird through the middle of the album and ultimately I was a little bored.
Never heard of this band before. Didn’t warm to it. The country style guitar sounds didn’t help convince me that this was an indie record.
Couldn’t find this on Apple Music.
Meh
Lite sömnigt.
Beautifully dull. Got to one song with higher energy, (Bad Liquor?) and just as I was becoming hopeful that things were changing, it ended and boring returned.
Should be an exclusive club only for americans. Like the USA its a copy of British rock music scene from the 80s like the smiths and others. Way too similar so its mehhhh
Respectfully, why is this one of the 1001 albums I need to hear before dying? What was so interesting about it? Who says this album is the soundtrack to their life? Probably at least one Midwestern guy, but still.
There's a few songs on here I like but - and I'll give it to American Music Club, they presaged a lot of the bands I was thinking of - it mostly feels like a worse version of a band I already like, especially REM & Red House Painters. Some Nebraska era Springsteen vibes on here too. Songwriting is good on an individual level but this doesn't really hit together as an album. They seem like a singles band...or a college radio band. Actually definitely the latter. Favorite Songs: Firefly, Laughingstock, Western Sky
Not on Spotify and the Youtube upload wasn't great so didn't listen in depth to the album. It sounded good for parts of the album, but other tracks were not interesting.
Pretty dull. Inoffensive, at least.
i was bored, too quiet and monotone (shoegaze?) blues elements were fun overall 2.5 wouldn’t relisten
It's technically music but definitely just here to make up the numbers.
This is nothing more than list filler. Influence 1. Quality 3. Intangibles 1. Hits 1. It's not objectionable? 3. Round to 2?
Not great
Ok 2/5
A little chunk of Bruce Springsteen, some Byrdsy Beatlesy Beach Boys pop and REM jangle but it’s all mainly homeopathic as this is still mostly bilge. Not welcome in my 1001 club. 2.5 stars.
After the opener, Firefly, with its irritating country styling, things seem to improve. But still this doesn't seem a particularly momentous album. In fact I found it rather bland.
Pretty mediocre to my ears. I don't particularly hate this late '80s soft-rock sound, but a good chunk of this thing just bored me. The vocals and melodies seem to meander too much and come off as almost directionless on some of these songs. And the band does little interesting with all the country and other genre fusions here, the acoustic cuts were the worst offenders. It's not all completely awful, I do think the opening track, 'Firefly' was cute for what it was. And 'Pale Skinny Girl' is just leagues above anything else here, a generally melancholic and evocative little tune with an incredible stuttering instrumental interlude. This song gave me Slint vibes almost. 'Western Sky', I also really enjoyed the sentiment of, despite it falling into the same uninteresting instrumental lane as many of the other songs here fall into. So, yeah, those are my brief thoughts; not my thing, and I think many were doing this sound better at this time. Not god awful or anything, though.
Oh good, more indie rock where the guy's voice sucks. This was Wilco levels of boring for me. It wasn't completely unlistenable, and thank god it was a shorter album. Most guys like this don't know when to stop singing and have these epically long albums. But honestly, it feels like I've heard this before, and not in a good way. This doesn't need to be on the list.
Pedal steel guitar couldn’t save this one. Every song is so slow and the vocalist sounds like he’s doing a bad Morrissey impression.
I don’t really have room in my life for these guys. All the best. xo
It sounds like a mash up of REM and the Smiths, only slower, and not as good as either. Perfect music if you think watching paint dry or grass grow is just a little too exciting.
2.5 rounded down
I owned a Mark Eitzel solo album at one point, not sure why. This was just ok.
2,75
Meh
It got more interesting near the end, but overall just not that exciting to me.
4/10
Always a negative if I can't get your music on Spotify damnit. First time ever hearing these guys and found this album to be pretty generic. Wasn't terrible, but nothing I would seek out. For this listener, Bad Liquor was the best song by a wide margin. Really liked it and wished there were more tunes similar. Other songs I thought were decent include, Somewhere, Lonely and Now You're Defeated. Most of the other tunes were a little slow and boring. 2.5 - Mainly for Bad Liquor
2 in a row not on Spotify :( didn’t give it a fair listen I should come back and relisten
Meh, it's ok, but is average fare.
yup, this sure sounds American, all right
𝘊𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘢 blends folk, Americana, and proto-slowcore moods, but it doesn’t leave much of a lasting impression. Mark Eitzel’s fragile voice and the hushed arrangements create an atmosphere, yet the songs blur together and never really stand out. Not a terrible record, just one that feels more like a footnote than essential listening.
wasn't impressed by this one
Boring. Nothing special. Weird vocals.
I'm really glad this one wasn't available on Spotify, so I don't have to add it to my playlist. Super uninspired and boring
not my thing unfortunately
So boooooring
Ekki eftirminnilegt, þrátt fyrir orð Arnars Eggerts á Wikipedia.
It was fine. Nothing special and no reason for it to be on this list.
This doesn't really do anything for me. There's some nice pedal steel guitar in places, but even that's not enough to really hold my interest through this album. The last song was really good, I'll give it that at least. 2.3/5
Didn't care much for this one. It was fine, but nah 2/5
Tego nigdzie nie ma, jeden upload na yt
I thought I would like this. But it turns out I didn't care for it at all. I'm not entirely sure why; it has components I like (and I'm not averse to "depressing" music). But it didn't grab me.
I listened to this album on youTube, which always gets things off to a bad start - extremely underwhelming. Another album whose place on this list is questionable.
I’ll be honest, I did skip through this one a bit, partly because YouTube is painful, but mostly because this music is painful
Never heard of this band and listening to the album didn't give me the sense that I should have. Maybe mostly mediocre, but deducting a star for 1) taking another better album's spot on this list, and 2) taking up my time.
It starts out promising, and then quickly derails because it's literally too quiet to enjoy, and is too slow to enjoy. You're better off listening to "California" by Phantom Planet instead. Favorite Track: "Bad Liquor".
Boring for me personally, only got through 2 songs. Though American accent doesn't bother me.
I listened to California two days ago and couldn't recall a thing about it now, except that it was not bad. Relistening led to the same conclusion: nice, but utterly unmemorable.
meh
Had to haul ass over to SoulSeek for this one, not exactly a worthwhile venture. It's acceptable enough, I guess? It does sound ahead of its time, which is impressive, but the sound is bland, and if it did come out in the 1990s, it'd fall into obscurity.
There was a time in my life I would have rated a guitar singer-songwriter sad guy album like this 4 or 5 stars. I'm glad that time is not now.
#655. Nope 2/5: don't want
Seems a little less than necessary for 1001. It is a bit more than usual lyrically: I am enjoying paying attention. So, not exceptional but competent and occasionally intriguing.
I didn't really get this one. Maybe I need to give it another listen, but the guy's voice really made it a struggle to give a shit.
This album (that I had to find on YouTube) has moments of brilliance scattered here and there throughout mostly folksy Americana garbage. If this album was considered important enough to be on this list, then why hasn't the band made it available to stream on Apple Music? That alone speaks volumes.
I don’t need more sad cowboys in my life thank you
Alright if you like melancholy 80s alt country a la Giant Sand. A slew of people became huge in the proceeding decades doing the same thing at about the same level.
Really more of a 1.5, but rounding up out of respect for anyone’s dad in a garage band, which is what this sounds like. “Now You’re Defeated” was particularly painful, and the rest blurred together in a haze of vocals that made me beg for auto-tune and samey, same-same arrangements. “Firefly” might’ve stood out more if it hadn’t been followed by an entire album that sounds just like it.
Indie Rock / Americana / Slowcore. I wasn't sure what Slowcore was, but it's also known as Sadcore which I think says it all. Is it Rock or is it Country - I'm not sure. Think of a slower, more sombre, sadder version of the Eagles - quite pleasant, but a bit boring and slightly depressing. Unable to play on Spotify without an upgrade, but found the full album on YouTube.
Felt pretty neutral about this one. I suppose it fits into the generic rock category, but nothing really stood out. Everything sounded fine but the same across the board. It didn’t grab me, just floated by. I didn’t look up the lyrics this time, and nothing made me want to. It’s decent background music (harmless, maybe even comforting), but I don’t think I’d come back to it. Might give it another spin in a different mood or setting just to be sure or place more attention to the lyrics, but for now it’s a 2 that leans a little boring. It's not awful it's just uninteresting.
that Bad Liquor song was pretty good. The rest?....
It's ok, banned in every country tho
Started alright but I pretty quickly got bored with this one.
Album is not on Spotify, but is available on Bandcamp if you want to listen without being interrupted by YouTube ads. Review: Not my cup of tea, but I'll try to be objective. The lyrics are actually pretty good - the kind of definitive American folk poetry that would land this album on this list. The music is well done for what it is, but is only interesting in patches, while meandering into poorly done country at times. The vocals range from not memorable to just talking. I want to give this at least a "mixed rating" for being different, but there are literally no moments I truly enjoyed on this. 2.0/5.0: Bad
