Reviews (page 4 of 7)

It was fine? It all sounded to me like one song over and over and unfortunately it wasn't a song I loved

I can't decide on a fair rating on this one, so I give it a 3 until I have thought it through. A little to winy singing so it's a weak 3.

C'était un peu osef en fait

This didn't do much for me, it was fine to listen to but wouldn't rush back to listen again

Muy rockero el disco. Estuvo bueno.

I’m not sure I’ve ever listened to this before. I discovered the band a few years later when Stop! and Been Caught Stealing were being played at almost every club I went to. It’s alright, but I certainly prefer Ritual de lo Hanitual.

I had a friend who loved this when it first came out. Couldn't see it then or now really.

I'd heard of the and but didn't know what to expect - enjoyed it

5 - AVERAGE

A lot of the songs sound very similar to me. Probably not one I'll return to.

why not

Pretty good. I did like a few of the tracks.

I absolutely love the song Jane Says. As for the album? Eh. It’s hit and miss.

Mostly enjoyable, but only occasionally any more than that. A true model for the descriptor, "alright."

This was pretty good and worthy of credit, for me. Great guitar and energy across it but without many standout moments. While I think this is a strong album, I’m left wondering, again, if this interests me all that much. That division made this a tough rating. When in doubt, I guess I’ll choose to be exclusive, highlighting the albums that capture me while listening and leave me wanting more when I’m done. 1 listen Favorite Track: Jane Says

Pretty ok

This was a fun one. Very interesting semi metal album. Mostly similar to Led Zeppelin, but with some more hair metal. I really liked the vocals, and there were some amazing riffs involved. I didn’t really stay that memorably in my recollection, but I enjoyed it while I was listening to it. Jane’s song was particularly good, as was the kick off track.

I appreciate their place in the transition from 80s to more modern rock, but they've never really done it for me. Perry is a bit grating.

I like how strong this album started. However, things started to muddle together as the album progressed. Or maybe it was because I got distracted and wasn’t paying attention to the album. Anyways, not something I would listen to in public with that cover but I might try this album again as I was intrigued in the beginning.

Yeahh🙂‍↕️

The stuff that makes individual songs interesting makes the album as a whole a difficult listen.

How come quite a lot of these grunge era albums always sound so shitty? Especially the drum sounds are really bad. Maybe they were recorded in cheap studio’s before these bands got really big. I was just about to give up on this record but then Idiot’s rule and Jane says returned my interest

I have now listened to this album four times, heatwave is frying my brain and perhaps this is not an easy album to listen to when you have not slept. Having said that I did like it. The energy was good and through the punk/grunge/thrash metal tunes there were distinct melodies and an added bonus of an eastern influence. High 3.

Interesting as a bridging point between the more performative rock of the 80s and what would become grunge in the 90s. However, it really doesn't do anything for me; it doesn't really energize me, or give me much to think about.

Good album with some solid songs. 6.3/10

Once upon a time I would have made a case for this album being groundbreaking, and I guess some have. Dave Navarro is a fine guitarist, but not when he's trying to be. Perry Farrell can be an excellent lyricist, but probably not as consistently good as he thinks he is. The rhythm section is incredible and holds the rest of the bullshit together. When it works it's amazing (Jane Says, Mountain Song). But I don't think it works as much as it doesn't.

Stark trea!

Rätt bra men sången och något över helheten tilltalade mig inte riktigt.

En del balla grejer, men inte superintressant överlag för mig!

Jadå!

Great bass player, some good guitar, andca big hit!

How is this somehow the most 90s thing that's ever existed but it came out in 1988. Just an unbearably exactly fine album and document of the time in which it was born. I was pretty enamored with this album cover as a young child and probably some of the first bare tits I'd ever seen.

Rooock! Que increible suena la guitarra a pesar de ser de 1988

3 out of 5. Not as bad as I was maybe expecting.

Alternative rock, alternative metal, hard rock, art rock.

Not a great fan of the vocals, but the funk rock music is really good

This was a mixed bag. There are some great tracks, some so-so ones, and some I'd like to avoid. In the end, it felt fairly run of the mill. 3/5

The words noones ever uttered after a night out with Len Houmous 3.0 11/11 Pigs In Zen

Decent enough. The thing is I've never really been into Jane's Addiction and never went all the way into an album and this didn't really change my mind. I just really don't like Perry Farrell's vocals. I've tried enough times and I think this confirmed they're just not for me.

Not as good as their second album

This is not all what I expected. Jane says I should give this a 4, but the artwork definitely lowers the score

Dug it. 3.5/5

This was disarmingly decent - a real band performance, and one that ushers in 90s altern rock. Disarming because there is an underlying whine to a hell of a lot of alternative American music of the 90s, which this mainly avoids. After the excellent opening pair it does fall back to more pedestrian funk-based numbers. Navarro's guitar is flashy when it needs to be, but doesn't feel like prog-rock indulgence. It's toned down for a pair of good acoustic tracks 'Jane Says' and 'Summertime Rolls', a couple of dreamy highlights. Overall I thought it very decent whilst not reaching great heights.

90% of the people in my life are women so sometimes when I start to talk about certain subjects I’m immediately made aware that I chose the wrong audience. I was talking about shower habits the other day and quickly realized the way men and women approach showering is in two completely different leagues.

title is pretty accurate, i was not shocked

This was generally fine but unremarkable and lacking in any real standout tracks, except for the wrong reasons. First, even overlooking the objectionable subject-matter, ‘Ted, Just Admit It…’ does little for me and is too long (as was ‘Summertime Rolls’). Second, ‘Jane Says’ might be the most popular song, but it was one of my least favourite as the vocals were especially irritating. Indeed, the vocals were my biggest problem with the whole album. For the positives, there was some nice guitar work/solos throughout, and a fair bit of stylistic variety. JUST good enough for a generous 3 stars.

Pretty good, no strong feeling either way

Just a fine rock album

Nothing amazing. But its orite

Good album better then I thought it would be! Summertime rolls Mountain song Jane's says Pigs in zen All stand out tracks for me

Perry Farrell's voice brings a distinctiveness Jane Says and last song very good. Just wanted to listen to Been Caught stealing rhough

I like this guys voice. + points for the tits on the cover

tribal

Solid listen

As always with these types of albums, the softer, melodic stuff stood out to me from the more "sex is violence" ones.

i didn’t really like it even though it had something in it. got bored yet relaxed. could’ve done more to me.

Heard of but not heard. I like the guitar work but the lyrics - wow, I do not get. Seems like this album belongs on the list for the influence it had. I would need multiple listens to really appreciate it but who has that kind of time. Anyway, back to Harry Styles where the lyrics politely explain themselves.

I really should have liked this more, but it just didn't click. Still good, though.

Have never managed to get into these guys, and this listen hasn’t really changed that. Couple of decent tracks, but I am not addicted!

I've never listened to an entire Jane's Addiction album, and, as a massive 90s alternative rock fan, I was excited to see what the hype on the "90s alternative godfathers" was about. Sadly, it is not a great album. It has some certified bangers (that bassline coming down the mountain, *chef's kiss), but I found it way duller than what I had imagined this album sounded like. I'd rate it as a two-star album, but the bangers make me give it an additional star.

Jane says is dogshit. Enjoy the rest of the album 😉

it's 3.5

It's a creative rock band, with a unique sound. Not something I would put on by myself.

Wasnt sold at first but it grew on me.

Okay, not a big album for me -

Un album che non conoscevo e che spiega molte cose, dai Mars Volts ai Battles.

Pretty neat.

Another Jane's Addiction album from the generator. I suppose this one is much better than the other one and I thought it was just fine, especially for late 80s music.

Kan wel gezelliger

Pretty good, mountain song slaps

Feel like I could probably have copy and pasted yesterday’s review again, maybe a little better but still quite noisy and edgy and the guy can’t really sing 3

Pretty good. Can't say it was totally memorable but I enjoyed it.

average

I have never been a big fan, but this was nice running music yesterday!

Its oke, įdomus pasiklausyti, iki galo nesupratau žanro, nes kaip ir rock'as kaip ir ne.

Album #1,083 Aww, shucks, Been Caught Stealing isn't on this album. I always got a creepy vibe from this band. Maybe it was the creepy album covers, their name, or Dave Navarro's creepy face. As far as the music goes, the guitar and drums sound great. The vocals can get irritating. There's boring stuff like Summertime Rolls that never seems to end. The track I enjoyed most was the jazz number Thank You Boys, but sadly it was only a minute long.

Better than Coldplay

Maybe it’s the comparison to surrounding albums, but I’m rounding up here!

Jane Says is a very fun track and this is ll generally decent. Perry Farrell’s voice gets old fairly quickly. 2.5 rounded up.

hahah ich kenn nur s albumcover de erst song isch insane eifach ah mier verbii, ocean size wrckt eim aber grad hahaha iwiei rüehrets eim huere vill an grind und au wenns vlt amigs beihdruckend isch, was sie eim an grind rüehret, lösts nöd unglaublich vill ih mier uus ted just admit it isch na cool, v.a. de bass ok gaht schochli ab summertime tolls bringt ENDLICH mal chli abwechslig wird jz nöd mis lieblingslied aber het öppis ide atmosphäre wos kreiert DAS FEHLTMER VLT bim rest bis jz, atmosphäre! will villes bis jz YEAHYEAH SHREDSHREDSHRED isch iwie isch sini stimm vill punkiger als de rest ICH CHEGGS IWIE NÖD ich hans gfühl imene andere rahme hett ich die gitarresoli no gfühlt aber daa hanis eifach nur WACK gfunde 2? oder es 3 will ichs iwo durre au respektiere han jz nomal chli ahgfange innelose und ich cheggs immer nanig ganz hahaha wiso isches so wack es chönnt so guet sii

After Ritual De Lo Habitual I wasn't happy seeing a second Jane's Addiction album on the list. However, Nothing's Shocking was okay even if Perry Farrell's voice is fucking ridiculous.

Wow, this sounds like they influenced the entire decade of 90's rock, which is impressive and unfortunate given the music.

I think I said in my review of Ritual De Lo Habitual that it sounded like these were the dumbest guys you know. That’s not always a bad thing, dumb guys can make good music. I think it works better on this album. It’s a little tighter and there’s only one eastern inspired breakdown. Interesting to hear some of the 80s sounds which were gone by the next album.

Not sure I would listen to this one again but I did quite like it as background music. Gets a bit weird at times, but on the whole I enjoyed it. Just didn't stand out enough for me to think I'll come back to it. Fav song: Jane Says Least fav: Pigs in Zen

Fun, but I think I prefer porno for pyros

Mwhaie

Du rock

J’ai eu peur au départ et en fait ça va

I’ve always liked “Jane Says” and was hoping for a great album. But all I can really say about this is that I’m glad I listened to it once through. I wish I had more to say. It’s not bad, I just don’t think it’s particularly great, either. Album 14, March 12, 2026

I liked Jane says

Up the beach, Ocean Size, Mountain Song e Jane Says (!!!!!!!!) são excelentes. 3,5/5.

Pretty cool, I guess. I expected a bit more from the album and I suspect I’d have liked this more had I heard it when it first came out. Given my age that would’ve been impossible but still.

You know, for such a wash of sound, why the fuck would you mix it like it's in a tunnel AND a bass trap? Music impressed me, I wrote off Jane's Addiction years ago. Smashing Pumpkins if they were a rock band. Too bad I don't like the Pumpkins.

Just okay

562/1001

OK music, didn't care for the vocals

Mountain Song and Jane Says are brilliant and rightfully classics. And the band as a whole deserves mention in any history of hard rock and/or alternative rock, particularly how they melded the two in a unique and important way. But the singer is basically annoying and kind of repulsive. So there's that.

I'm not a rock guy but I definitely had a good time listening to this

when my best friend started dating my ex-girlfriend three days after we broke up in september of 2012, he also showed me this album! i think it is very good, but probably not great. "Jane Says" is still a bop and I listen to it regularly. i had forgotten most of the other songs on this album, and it was good to revisit them and think about that time my best friend wanted to play COD Zombies one night after school a week after the breakup and was like "can shawna also get on with us? we'll probably have to revive her a lot but it'll be fine" and i was like "sure man i mean if you don't think it's weird" and he was like "nahhh it'll be fine man!" and then we were all on mic together and it was definitely weird like he said it wouldn't be

I go back and forth on Jane’s Addiction so often that it’s kind of funny, but today I’m more uniquely pro than I’ve ever been before. I do think their lasting importance is dramatically underrated in modern times. I don’t think anyone who isn’t a nerd talks about them in the same way as Pixies or Sonic Youth, for example. The fact that Perry Farrell created and maintains ownership of Lollapalooza should by itself put them on more people’s radar. That doesn’t necessarily make them enjoyable to listen to unless you’re in the right mood, which I guess I am today.

Kelpas kitaristi Peppersiinkiin. Tää ny ei ihmeellinen

3,5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Didn't move me, but it wasn't bad.

Alternative Rock / Grunge aus den 80ern. Wer Lust auf härtere Sounds und Gitarrenriffs hat, kommt hier voll auf seine Kosten. 3/5

Solid rock album 3/5

Man, these guys would be incredible if it wasn't for Perry Farrell.

Some hit some missed, overall s good album though

Was so into this thirty years ago not so sure now

Interesting

A very meh album. Looking at the artists they've influenced, it's a sea of artists I'd rather not listen to. The album is fine, nothing super memorable with a few bits that stick but an overwhelming sense of monotonous shouting and the same chords.

Not for me

buen rock. me guarde algunos temas

Respect more than like. Strong guitar work and I dug Jane’s Song but most of this was a little too punk for my taste

I don’t really care about Jane’s Addiction but David Nevarro was great in the Dunngeon

Enjoyable! But an album where best song is easily the most popular one. Not sure I needed to hear the rest.

its pretty run-of-the mill 90s "hard-er" rock. Outside of the big singles, It kind of gets lost in decade of monumental releases

Semi oké, zou niet opnieuw luisteren

Good, like some songs

A lot heavier than that dog barking track i know

fun punk album, cant see myself rushing to listen again soon but still fun

I guess Dave Navaro sucks as a person but there are some good rock tracks on here?

Alright

Really good

favorite - jane says 6/10

Jeg kunne rigtig godt lide trommerne

Ret fed, stor 3er fordi det er forud for sin tid -- lyder som 90er grunge!

Very Jane's Addiction!

I was already familiar with the band Jane's Addiction. However, I couldn't have named an album or a song. After a rather interesting start to the album, I found it increasingly boring as it went on. I liked some parts of the album because the band incorporated brass instruments into their music. I found that exciting, but overall it wasn't enough to improve my impression. In my later music stream, I heard newer songs by the band that I liked much better. 3/5

A few really great songs, but inconsistent.

There is no mistaking Jane’s Addiction for any other band, especially once Perry Farrell starts to sing. This album has two true standouts, “Mountain Song” and “Jane Says”. Otherwise it’s pretty pedestrian. A shoutout to Dave Navarro’s guitar skills on “Pig’s In Zen”.

Meh. I like “Jane Says” (who doesn’t?), but otherwise I don’t care much about the thrashy screamy stuff. Sounds like Soundgarden at times, and I don’t mean that as a compliment. (Funny how I really love Zeppelin’s metallic material, but not most of the bands that it inspired!)

It was standard 90s punk/grunge fare. Not as good as some of the bigger bands but ok.

i liked this more than i thought i would!

Good album. Pretty hard rocking. Definitely ticks the boxes for me

Jane’s Addiction’s Nothing’s Shocking lands like a brick wrapped in incense: confrontational, messy, and impossible to ignore. Heavier than Ritual and a bit less locked into groove, the album thrives on tension between brute force and woozy psychedelia, with Perry Farrell’s yelps and sermons pushing right up against the band’s muscular attack. “Ocean Size” thrashes and howls with barely contained chaos, while “Mountain Song” flexes a swaggering, almost Zeppelin-esque heft that would become alt-rock canon. The band’s softer instincts shine on “Summertime Rolls,” a hazy comedown that actually feels like heat shimmering off asphalt, and “Jane Says” remains a rare thing for its era: a vulnerable, unguarded anthem that doesn’t rely on volume to make its point. Still, indulgence is part of the package—“Ted, Just Admit It…” sprawls into a confrontational mess that mistakes provocation for momentum. Nothing’s Shocking doesn’t always cohere, but its raw nerve and ambition make the rough edges feel like a feature, not a flaw.

not bad i liked the harder instrumentals but it was a bit samey plus the cover in the context of them all being men is a bit grim…

Good rock album, never heard of them before but I liked it!

Album cover already got me sold

I liked Jane says with Steel Drums.

Jane's Addiction has always been treasured more by critics than I. When NOTHING'S SCHOCKING and later RITUAL DE' HABITUAL came out I was underwhelmed with everything but Stephen Perkins playing and the creation of the LOLLAPALOOZA festival itself. Perry Farrell's voice is annoying and his antics even more so. Competent, but not engaging, and far from enthralling.

This one really picked up near the end, I enjoyed it quite a bit. Can't believe the top review for this is some idiot crying about nipples on an album cover lmao

Hard Rock Einige recht nette Abschnitte Insgesamt nicht meine Musik

It is a great album but the vocals are grating at times.

Whats shocking to me is that this is an 80’s record

I’m trying to think of what to say about it…

Not for me, but better than I was expecting

“Everybody’s so full of shit!” You’re telling me. I liked this more than I expected I would. “Jane Says” is the obvious hit but I could do without the steel drums. Some of this album reaches for something grander and poignant but doesn’t quite grasp it (“Ted, Just Admit It…”). Succeeds in its more classic rock-minded moments. Engineered and mixed beautifully.

Not my top choice but it was alright

I’m very eh with this band 3/5

Overall not great, but the hits are enough to pull it up to a 3

This seemed better than expected as ive discovered a general dislike of American college rock. There was some real edge to it, the tunes came through and some real musicality shone through.

hehehehe boob

While I've heard of Jane's Addiction in passing, before today I've never actually listened to any of their music. After listening through Nothing's Shocking, I'm not sure if I'm better or worse off. I'll get it out of the way, the vocals on most tracks suck. Every now and again Farrell will do a cool scream that will have me thinking "oh maybe the vocals aren't so bad", only to immediately be dropped into a section that doesn't block his voice with a wall of guitars and drums. Outside of this major flaw, the record is honestly pretty good. Summertime Rolls stood out immediately to me, that bass tone is just so nostalgic of this era of Alt-Rock for me. In general, when the band gets in a groove, it's easy to tune out the vocals and just vibe to it. I can see why the target demographic for this band is stoner uncles named Bob. Shout out to the horns on Idiots Rule that caught me so off-guard I choked on my water.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would based on the edgy cover. A lot of ideas explored creatively, variance in sound while still sounding cohesive and recognizable. Nothing really stood out melodically. Lyrics are cookie-cutter rebellious, and at this point in history (2026), that vibe is pretty washed out. Kinda gives "I'm not like the other girls." Strong instrumentation and production, but the high pitched noodly guitars get a bit tiring. A worthwhile listen even if it's not completely my thing. 3.2/5.

Wait, what? This album came out in 1988? I could have sworn it was a 2000's release. Weird. I guess, factoring that in, they may have been ahead of their time. Jane says and Mountain song are... I guess... Classics. The rest of it, is just fine. They'll both get a spot on the playlist.

Great Songs: Good Songs: Ocean Size, Had a Dad, Standing In the Shower... Thinking, Summertime Rolls, Mountain Song, Idiots Rule, Jane Says, Pig's in Zen Mid Songs: Up the Beach, Ted, Just Admit It..., Thank You Boys Bad Songs:

3.4 Woulda been way higher if the cover didn't suck so much.

I thought I would like this album a bit more, I heard it a few times in my childhood but it's decent. I guess I'm more of a greatest hits guy when it comes to this band

Good guitar playing and decent songs, but I can’t stand the vocals. Sounds more “straight ahead rock” than I remember, but that could just be a hindsight is 20/20 thing.

putz I'm not in the mood for this one

Where do I begin? Already a Dave Navarro fan so when keeping an ear open for the guitar I was very satisfied with that. He was amazing and can seriously shred. The downside? I cannot stand Perry Farrell. The vocals could be fine, but hearing the whiny tones, combined with knowing he's a massive douche, just made for a less than desirable listen. If your just here to hear the instruments it's great, just tune out the asshole

Nothing Shocking is an apt title.

Well .... there is nothing shocking about this album. I have never been a fan of Jane's Addiction, but I know people absolutely love them. I had a friend in Junior High and High School, who had this tape and the next album. So I have heard this album, but funny thing is I dont remember much of it, as it obviously did not stick with me over the years. Its a good album, but I am still not a fan.

Always enjoyed 'Jane Says', never heard much else. Enjoyable overall. Not sure I would listen to an entire album, but I wouldn't skip an occasional song that popped up on shuffle.

Had the pleasure of seeing the 25 year anniversary tour for this one where they sucked ass and were terrible. This feels like another album that was probably ground breaking and a huge breath of fresh air for when it came out. It has been done so much better since then. A lot of this is rage against the machine with a much worse vocalist. I am a huge hater of Mr Peripheral but I do think he does some really cool things with his voice/effects. The issue is I hate him on these songs. I do like mountain song and Jane says, honestly I like most of this album minus Perry. Pigs in Zen is half turnstile half rage it’s so strange. The album cover is a load shit too. Feeling a very light three. I assume we’ll get ritual too, which I grew up with and like more but it’s still not great.

I appreciate the album against all the other music out at the time. A very different sound. And it helped to usher in "alternative " music. But thats a lot of perry farrell.

Great band sound, vocals were hit or miss depending on the song.

Better than the other album.

I’d never heard of Jane addiction before, I would definitely give this a high 3 I enjoyed the album

I don't like Perry's voice at all. Some of the riffs are alright but there's nothing great here.

Good album, loses some points for the cover though.

I just don’t like these guys. But, wholly their own sound, so points there, and Mountain Song is a fun stomper. 3/ 5

Obnoxious and in your face. I really don't like Perry's voice, but I don't think anybody else could pull off being the vocalist for Jane's Addiction. Really a mash of sounds from the 80s and into the 90s with some edge.

Sounds like Queen, Black Sabbath and Zeppelin on heroin. Another weird mix on this record….sounds tinny overall, the vocals are quiet/unintelligible and the bass is really loud. Mostly a good grungey rehash of 70s rock, but not altogether that memorable or something i would seek out.

I had heard Jane Says and Mountain Song before, and liked those but overall it leans too heavily into guitar solos and rock star posing for my personal taste.

Not my normal taste, but it was fine.

Cool shit, but sounds like it was written by a prepubescent school bully

Solid rock record 👍

not something i would really like 3/5

felt meta being in the shower and thinking, listening to standing in the shower thinking song: jane says

I didn't gel with this, some cool tracks in there and a good interesting sound, can hear a bit of RATM (last track) and generally a nice heavy sound, but I guess I'm not massively into this anymore.

I think I just don’t really like this band but man “Jane Says” is such a great song

Was okay, but nothing amazing.

Never got into Jane’s Addiction. Don’t love his voice

Not bad but too rowdy for me

Not as shocking as expected. I enjoyed it but it verged too close to bland at times.

Overrated. Is there greatness here? Yes, with Ted, Just Admit It, Mountain Song, & Jane Says, but the rest I just found to be a boring slog.

I don't have much to say about this album, but it was perfectly fine. Good even! Worthy of some praise, but not a stand-out to me.

Not exactly my type of music but would listen again. Very relaxing Rock Instrumentals with light vocals

Some nice jams, but nothing groundbreaking. Terrible whining vocals over riffs that don’t go nearly as hard as they think they do.

Hangs around nicely in the background, not something I would critically listen to it but it’s produced well and has nice composition. The vocals aren’t necessarily my favorite. It’s passable.

I think this is just a good rock album to be honest. There’s great guitar, some interesting variation between songs, softer and heavier riffs. But it doesn’t blow me away as thinking wow this is fantastic. A good, but not great listen overall me thinks

cool album

not bad, didnt realize this album was so old.

Pleasantly surprised by how much I like this one. Not sure if I’ve ever heard a song off of it before. Probably avoided them cuz of the band name and album cover.

3 decent album but nothing except Jane says really sticks out

I think I'm just too old for this shit now days.

I wasn't totally sure what to make of this album for some reason. It wasn't bad at all but I didn't connect with most of it. I did like "Jane Says" and "Pigs in Zen" most. Possibly an album that could grow on me.

Jane’s Addiction was played relentlessly in the dive bars of Greenwich Village when this album came out. It sounded a little different than what everybody else was doing. I remember thinking it was exciting. Unfortunately now I’m not getting that same reaction to it. Which I suppose makes sense, it’s not new anymore, but also it just doesn’t move me much. Didn’t hold up the way I would expect.

I find Perry Farrell's voice insufferable and very hard to listen to for an entire album. Musically, this album kicks. Ted, Just Admit It... and Jane Says are the standouts.

midwest emo always been with us. 3/5

Mountain song is still pretty cool

Christ, those vocals. Definitely an acquired taste, and most definitely not to my taste. It's just such an overpowering part of the songs it took me concentrated effort to try and enjoy the great instrumentals. I feel like I would love this if I listened to it at least once or twice more, but for now its ehhh 6/10. Favs: Up the Beach; Summertime Rolls; Ocean Size

You know Perry Farrell was one of the last people to be with Taylor Hawkins before he passed? And that he's a notorious drug addict with impulse control issues? Yeah, Perry Farrell sucks. "Godfather of alternative" or not, he's done more bad than good.

12 year old me would have loved this. 45 year old me really like most of it

Muito bom!!!!! 3,5!!!

a mix of highs and low, highs being Jane Says and the first two songs and lows being the 7+ minutes of someone screaming sex is violent and the pigs in zen ramble.

Pretty mid, I didn't get much from this. Familiar with Mountain Song and Jane Says, but found them both underwhelming in this context. 2.7/5

4 1/2 stars

First time listen. Had like their later albums, and th8is is good as well. Novel threads and Beats - pretty cool.

Going in a new musical direction will upset fans of 'the old stuff', but not innovating is just as bad. Producing the same songs over and over (looking at you, pop music [in general]) leads to really bland, music-by-committee. This is neither groundbreaking, nor a complete rehash of Ritual de lo Habitual. BUT IT ISN'T FAR OFF. More guitar distortion, and the bass has been cranked to 11. Otherwise, squint and they are the same album. Summertime Rolls was good.

Not bad, but didn’t catch me. First album of f this challenge for me.

Instrumentally good, vocally weak. There is a certain energy to it all though, not bad. 3/5

A solid 3. Nothing amazing, nothing dreadful

Jane's Addiction are just solid mid tier stuff. Not bad, not good. Technically music in all the ways.

Not totally my cup of tea but I respect it. Was cool to hear the little swing tune and the tower of power horns on a song.

Not bad

It was good, just not good enough for me to add anything to a playlist

Heading into this blind, not sure exactly what to expect, reading "Up the Beach" and... what an intense, slow moving mind-fuck to start a project off with. Afterwards I was able to check myself and understand the vibe, of course I've heard Jane's Addiction before. Perry's vocals are carved into the back of my mind. We're gonna be listening to low-key angst. Slightly funky, definitely on the produced-hardcore side. It's a flavor and if you're feeling like sticking it to the man but not really, this would be the soundtrack I'd put on. I was real happy for the intro to Ted, Just Admit It, and then it turned into the mood again. Maybe I'm too into jazz. It's not a bad album, just not something I'd typically feel like putting on. 2.9/5

Good-at least the cover

First listen at age 61. Had been put off by the offensive cover. Liked it. The bond rocks throughout.

First run standout tracks: Ted, Just Admit It..., Summertime Rolls, Jane Says Second run: don't feel like I want to listen to it again anytime soon Fun facts I've learned while listening to the album: pioneers of alternative music, those are nude sculptures created by Farrell and his girlfriend, and the only thing that stood in their way was themselves. I rest under the umbrella of alternative. I grew up watching Nirvana videos on MTV and have heard Jane says on the radio more than I can count. After reading some of these reviews, I, too, wish I could have been there to feel my mind melt upon hearing it for the first time. Although I didn't experience that, I can respect what this album represents. And honestly, "Jane Says" still hits as good now as it did back then.

Sounds like my brother’s room when I walked down the hallway in 1996. Great grunge, with some melodic elements that remind me of Led Zeppelin. Favorite track is “Up the Beach”.

Not really my thing, but lead to some good songs on spotify, "Jane Says" is a song that i've heard before. first time hearing any other of their songs

Good, slightly forgettable

The only thing that stands out about this is Dave Navarro's playing. Perry Farrell's voice is grating. It's good alternative hard rock but not special.

Favorite track: Jane Says Other picks: mountain song, summertime rolls, ocean size

The intro and the random song that spirit shuffled to were my favorites. Hmm. 3.

I was expecting to like this much more. Personal enjoyment: 3/5 Relevance to this list: 4/5

Good alt rock

This sounds exactly like the bridge between 80s glam and 90s alternative. It was pretty nice.

Lemppari: Jane Says Vähiten lemppari: Had a Dad

This was a pretty decent album, Janes Addiction was never one of my favorite bands, I was always more of a hits guy, but this was pretty good!

There is signs of potential with this album but only a couple of songs stand out at all. 3 stars or C-.

Iconic sound and influence from this band. I remember first hearing them when I was young and thought it was such a taboo sound because of how grimy and grungy it was. This record continues that mood, and I'm all for it. Perry Farrell has such a distinct voice that will always resonate. I like this one.

I liked the music a lot more than the annoying vocals. 3 stars on the strength of the music

I knew a lot more of these songs than I expected to. I don't love Jane's Addiction but enjoyed revisiting this album after so many years. Standout tracks: Mountain Song

I’m very nostalgic for this album cause I was a kid when this album was huge. And I think it’s another one of those albums where it’s painfully of its time but that’s not always a negative thing. This is undoubtedly my favorite Jane’s Addiction album but that doesn’t say much cause I’d say as a whole I’m not really a fan of theirs. And I’m not really fond of the lead singers vocals. But despite that I do enjoy this album. The only other negative thing I’ll say is that the only half of the album I like is the second half. But that second half is pretty great.

3.3 I liked it but wasn't listening super closely. Heavier than what I was expecting. I will give it another go at some point,

Preferred the back half of the album

Mountain song & Jane Says are very fun songs, other than that it all kinda blends together.

Major props for this band putting out an album in 1988 that sounded like nothing else, merging metal and alternative. Mountain Song and Jane Says are five stars. That said, Perry Farrell is so annoying.

Pretty interesting songs. This is a rock album that I could tolerate.

Nothing bad, nothing spectacular. 3 stars

Jane's Addiction has always been one of those bands whose legacy sort of outweighs my actual enjoyment of their music. It's kind of easy to forget how much these guys shaped 90s alternative rock. They brought in a lot of the hard rock elements 80s alternative bands like R.E.M. and the Smiths deliberately avoided. They definitely walked so the big alt-rock bands of the 90s could run. That being said, I definitely don't think the songs are as great on this one. "Mountain Song" and "Jane Says" are both classics, but after that it gets a bit thin. There's some other relatively solid tunes, but also a few clunkers, which isn't great for a relatively short album. I think they'd get better on their second album. 3.5 stars.

A bit uneven, but also samey. But some good stuff too.

It was fine. Stand out songs: Summertime Rolls Mountain Song Jane Says

Jane’s addiction was good but this wasn’t the album for here.

Great consistency. My first time listening to them properly. Shouldn't have waited this long. Onto my want list

Good instrumentals, it's a shame that Perry Farrell is the vocalist.

Quite liked it most of it except Perry Farrell's voice which grates on me.

Admit it, the highlight of this was seeing the animated ladies with the big boobies and fiery hair seated on a double rocking chair on Spotify. Anyone who says anything else is a big fat liar. Lots of the kind of shouty American alt-rock I generally have no time for and I particularly disliked the vocals. But….I rather enjoyed a few of the more laid back and experimental tracks (summertime rolls being the best of the bunch) and I’m always partial to a brass section so it was thumbs up for the energetic idiots rule. It’s an intersting enough album, it’s alright of a listen, it’s just not my thing. Glad I’ve heard it, but won’t be exploring further.

You better believe I used to have the television show “Ink Master” on pretty much round the clock. When I see Dave fuckin Navarro (also of random Tim & Eric cameo fame) on this band page, you know that’s all I could think about. Did he play on this album though? He did. Wow. Truly a dedication to living mas. Not a band I’ve heard a lot from, so this is a new world for me. Regarding this review, will I leave a large chasm of unfinished thoughts and horrible typos in this review? The anser is almost assuredly Up the Beach - Intro track. Nothing really happening in a good or bad way. Fine. Ocean Size - These vocals are very distinctive. I did know that about the band. Love how this song kicked in. Kind of lulled from there but there were cool moments here. Had a Dad - Grown men referring their father as “Daddy” has always been odd to me, but hey. Maybe it’s a punk thing. This is a nice alt-rock song. Sweet riff, and lots of variety. Great energy here and we’ll lay the responsibility for the dopey lyrics on the punk influence. Yeah let’s go with that. Ted, Just Admit It - Whoa. Saying the name of the album in a song that isn’t named after the album? These guys mean business. Honestly, this is pretty great. It almost sounds like what thrash bands were trying to do in the mid 90s. But they just sounded like washed up thrash bands. This sounds really fresh and urgent. Standing in the Shower…Thinking - I’m glad he ended that with thinking! I shudder to think that he wasn’t being productive. That should be every person’s worst nightmare. I need to be increasing shareholder value or I might as well just fade away. Dystopian propaganda aside, this song did suck. Summertime Rolls - This song refers to the weight I gain in the summer because I refuse to go outside in the sweltering heat. I wish I could refuse. Especially now that summers will continue to get hotter. This is uplifting! Anyway, the song is boring. Mountain Song - We’re so back. That is, we’ve been jolted back into a semi-alive state after the last song. Decent track. Idiots Rule - Boy howdy, they sure do. Did he say Cheetos have their way? Like the lame, lazy, millennial “insult” levied at the fascist sympathizing talking head to our south? Oh. Cheaters. Yeah idiots really are in charge, and unfortunately for a lot of people, idiots make up most of the voter base. I mean I think an idiot composed much of the weird horn section of this song. Jane Says - This band seems to have an inside track on the world of this “Jane” character. Who is she? Why is she so interested in this band? I’ve definitely heard this song. It’s repetitive and a little grating. Thank You, Boys - Well done lads. Pigs in Zen - Fat animals? We’ve got em. Silly, futuristic (for the time) funk metal riffs? Yup. I like it. Kind of insane, but I suppose the idea of enlightened hogs doesn’t lend itself to reason. This wasn’t half bad. Certainly wasn’t full bad either Pretty cool in spots and never really that unpleasant. After U2, it sounded like hearing music for the first time, but I am a professional unpaid and unread music reviewer, so I didn’t let that effect the listen. And hey, I didn’t even mention Ink Master. Oh well. Dave isn’t the funny one anyway. Get me an Oliver Peck album and we’ll really get some quotables. Lines that fit the GOD DAMN SHAPE. I love trash. 2.5-3 HIGHLIGHTS: Had a Dad, Ted, Just Admit It, Pigs in Zen.

I've never been a huge Jane's Addiction fan, but this album is undeniably good. It has a very big sound to it that places it firmly in the late 80's/early 90's alternative rock sound, and recordings of Perry Farrell barely do the raw power of his voice justice, but it all works together. 3.4/5

A real back and forth between well thought out songs and some real messes. A mix of hair metal and early 90’s alt rock, not a bad album, just a little too much at times. “Idiots Rule” is a good song, especially with the horns added in. 3/5 Might listen again

This was pretty good for the genre that it is.

it's fine. better than i thought itd be

I knew Dave Navarro from his stint with the Chilis and always meant to give Jane’s Addiction a proper listen. Very classic Alt-rock sound with some grunge and punk and funk to it.

Not a whole lot of variation in the sound, but that’s not any new thought I’ve had about Jane’s Addiction. Definitely enjoyable, the songs just blend together in places. Thank You Boys wasn’t a song I was expecting to be on the album, either.

The atrocious album cover confirms that 'nothing's shocking' - its blaring image of sexual violence no longer astonishes or appalls. But the music is, to an extent, shocking, not b/c of its content but b/c it weds heavy metal to a nascent alternative movement. True, other 80s acts like Dinosaur Jr. and the Pixies showcased similar dynamics, but not as forcefully or as plainly as Jane's Addiction: this isn't slacker intelligence or nerdish obscurantists treasuring the odd for odd's sack. This is, simply put, hard-hitting rock 'n' roll. Just listen to Perry Farrell's purpose: 'I want to be more like the ocean / no talking / all action.' The issue is, Farrell tends to talk too much, even if he's plain as muck, and there's only one eternal, superb track: 'Jane Says.'

Not bad, little hard and light rock.

Loved them back in my rock clubbing days but this hasn’t worn so well. Severely lacking in actual tunes and Perry’s voice is annoying

It sounds like some of the best and worst of the 90s rock sound they helped create. No doubt a creative album for its time but it does just sounds a bit... Uninteresting? It rocks but in a restrained way which I think may not have been intentional. I actually think Perry's vocal style fits / helps create their brand of music. I can see why it was such a stir but I can't say I was overly impressed.

A generous 3. Just an awful voice

Listenable.

Gave it a few listens, nothing really sunk in immediately but I didn’t hate it and it was a decent listen. Didn’t hate, didn’t love it. Listening to this much rock in this project compared to usual (which is none) has definitely strengthened my prior opinion of it - I don’t really *hate* it, I enjoy and appreciate the strong guitar and drum presence, but I don’t find myself seeking it out.

"Jane Says" still hits the spot, but it’s doing all the heavy lifting. "Mountain Song" is catchy — if you don’t think too hard about what the hell Perry Farrell’s even saying. "Idiots Rule" feels like someone punched him in the face and he never recovered; who hurt him? Navarro’s guitar keeps things interesting, but "Summertime Rolls" is straight-up trash. A few gems, a lot of filler.

Some good stuff but nothing I found essential. My suspicion is they’d be great to see live. 3/5

Interessante, ma non particolarmente eccezionale.

Nothing shocking.

Nog een cool album. Ken Jane's Addiction niet zo goed, maar dit was wel de moeite om eens te beluisteren. 3.2

This album was good. The solos and guitar tones were really interesting. Overall I think this album was fine, but nothing insanely impressive or ground breaking here for me. However, the bass is a highlight for me. Super interesting bass lines. "Mountain Song" is obviously the highlight Liked Songs: "Had a Dad" , "Standing in the Shower...Thinking" , "Summertime Rolls" , "Mountain Song" , "Idiots Rule" , "Pigs in Zen"

liked songs: Up The Beach, Ocean Size, Idiots Rule I'm not a big fan of Perry Farrell's voice. The music is pretty good. 3.5

A classic case of we have one great song but we have to make a whole album

Somewhat familiar with Jane's Addiction. Perry Farrell's voice is hard to mistake after all (love his work in Porno for Pyros too). This was probably novel for the time, as alternative rock was sort of finding its mold around the mid to late 80's. Though I can only take Jane's Addiction is small doses, if that makes any sense. Good, hard alt rock that can get a little grating.

Hmm, I’m not exactly sure where I come down on this one. I didn’t dislike it, and it’s pretty cool in some ways - it sounds ahead of its time - but also on the verge of being irritating. “Jane Says” was the only song I’d heard from this album, and it’s definitely the standout.

Nice. Solid guitar playing

Nice raw album

Very cool and psychedelic take on Alternative Rock that actually sounds very modern by 1988 standards. I honestly prefer their follow-up, also on this list, so I'm not so sure this is an essential listen for everyone. Key tracks: Ocean Size Jane Says

not as good as Ritual De Lo Habitual a generous 3 stars
